A

s a little boy, Rodney Shaw was always at his aunt’s house living on her grandfather’s farm, but those visits were even more frequent at Christmastime.

“My aunt was very arts oriented and meticulously decorated for everything, but Christmas was her forte, and everything was exceptionally beautiful,” he said about his aunt, Sandra Lloyd.

That’s the same Sandra N. Lloyd, Riverton’s first female mayor whose name graces the city’s community and cultural center after she supported purchasing the former Riverton Elementary School for its current use. She also hoped the former Crane Home that was donated would operate as a museum and art gallery it is today. She served as president of the Salt Lake Valley Conference of Mayors, was a member on the Utah Economic Development Corporation’s executive board as well as on the Utah League of Cities and Towns, and volunteered 40 years preparing about 1,500 young women for the Miss Riverton and Miss Utah pageants.

But as a boy, the Bingham High principal only knew he loved sitting in front of his aunt’s Christmas village.

“Aunt Sandra’s house was a showcase at Christmas and decorated to the Nth degree,” he said. “She gave it her heart and soul. I fell in love, watched as she decorated and wanted to help. I loved how it made me feel. I pretended my house was one of the ones in her Christmas village.”

Now, Shaw’s own house has turned into one that may have rivaled his aunt’s.

“My Christmas village is bigger than hers, and I’ve always decorated full bore,” he said.

Brand-new Daybreak school builds ‘CommUNITY’ from the outset

ack-to-school anxiety is where children — and parents or guardians — struggle to cope with change that a new school year brings.

But what do you call the anxiety when there is not a school to be going “back” to?

Administrators at the newest of new Utah Schools — the 1,000-plus student Mountain Creek Middle School in South Jordan’s Daybreak Planned Community — proactively turned anxiety on its head.

Rebranding the new year as “community building,” school officials set off, from the starting blocks, uniting the school and the school within the community.

The school’s theme for the first month of school? CommUNITY.

IN THE SHADE, THEN THE BLARING SUN OF THE MOUNTAIN— SWIMMING UPSTREAM IN THE CREEK

In June the new school did not yet have a name, school colors or a mascot.

In August and September, the Jordan School District was squaring off against Daybreak regarding the school’s right to fence off the school — a five-letter “F” word, according to JSD’s interpretation of Daybreak’s 180page design manual.

At the fenceless school, Teachers and staff were “living out of boxes,” with “no time for prep,” and “having schedules change three times,” said school counselor Becky Hunsaker.

One day would be freezing, the next day burning up—thanks to an unstable temperature control system.

“I love my school,” Hunsaker said. “I love working here. That trickles down to students. We’re in it together.”

is coming from scratch,” the school wanted to stake the claim, from the start, that the school was all about 360-degree success — for every student.

In addition to language arts, math and other Utah Board of Education-mandated subjects, Mountain Creek Middle School students would be developing a culture of community building — with no child left emotionally behind.

CALENDARING CULTURE

“There are some students who struggle to introduce themselves,” Hunsaker said. “We wanted to teach students how to do that and to have them teach other students how to do that.”

The best way to do that was through literal fun and games, all starting Oct. 7 and coming to a crescendo Oct. 11.

Monday was the unthinkable — but, staff found, very speak-able — “No-Phones Lunch” where kids packed away what has become akin to their new limbs — their electronic devices — and just plain interacted in real-time with each other.

Tuesday was “Meet Someone New Lunch.” Students were given Tootsie Pops and guided to sit at tables with others they did not know—united only by the fact that they attend Mountain Creek and that they were in possession of purple, orange, red or other colors of suckers.

Wednesday was “Get To Know You Bingo.” To win a $10 gift card, students had to interact with each other and find bingo matches or students who have traveled out of the country, spent part of the summer going boating or the more commonplace “squares” to fill on the Bingo card—“My favorite food is pizza” and “I like video games.”

their name, then adding it to a song, repeating each of those preceding them. “Bodacious Becky” Hunsaker and “Darling David Parker,” both school counselors, said it was a huge hit.

And Friday? Finale Friday lived up to its name. Within a 15-minute start-to-finish window, a total of 1,035 students flooded onto the fenceless lawn, as a team visually depicting the culture of love they are all working to build by forming a humans heart.

“We were originally going to fill it in — like a coloring book,” said Darling David Parker, who teamed with Hunsaker to plan and execute not just the Friday finale but the whole week’s cultural kickoff. “I liked it better, how it turned out.”

CULTURE-BUILDING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

Mountain Creek Middle School is a subscriber of the Utah nonprofit “Choose Kind” anti-bullying program. This last year, the Anti-Bullying Coalition trained more than 280,000 kindergarten through 12th grade students in Utah as well as 8,000 parents in the art of daily heart-making through community building.

Crediting the school’s innovative concept with the mass heart, Choose Kind board member Robert Behunin, with R&R Partners Marketing and Advertising, said, “These types of visual projects are highly motivating and get kids centered, galvanized into a single, common cause.”

“We are more alike than we are different,” Hunsaker said. Hunsaker noted that the school serves a diverse community with “more cultures and many different languages” and comprises about 40% minority populations.

So far, the school has had monthly activities, including the kickoff CommUNITY in October and is coming up on the Thanksgiving-appropriate “Gratitude.” Other themes to be implemented with programming throughout the year include “Forgiveness,” “SelfCare,” “Digital Citizenship” and “More Alike Than You’re Different.”

Thirty-six “Choose Kind Ambassadors” who had to submit resumes and get two teachers’ signatures to participate help imbue cultural concepts to the seventh, eighth and ninth graders at the school.

It’s more than a holiday concert, it’s Eastlake Elementary’s Jingle Bell Jukebox Christmas

Hey kids, what brings you to the soda shop today?”

“Hi Ruby, we’re here for some Christmas cheer.”

Ruby, dressed in her poodle skirt, then reveals the Jingle Bell Jukebox and the kids break out in song, “F-R-O-ST-Y” in an upbeat version of “Frosty the Snowman,” and they perform the hand jive.

This is one of 10 songs, Eastlake Elementary’s 75-member choir will perform in its 45-minute “Jingle Bell Jukebox” holiday concert at 2 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 19 at the school, 4389 West Isla Daybreak Road.

“It’s a fun ’50s throwback, with lots of speaking parts and a big (cardboard) jukebox the kids will put their coins in for the music,” said fifth grade teacher Joanne Frost, who is directing the choir with colleague Kerry Simi. “It’s set in a soda shop, with lots of fun melodies, some harmony in songs with a lot of Christmas spirit.”

The fourth, fifth and sixth grade students will sing familiar songs, such as “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “Sleigh Ride” and “Jingle Bell Rock” as well as some new ones such as “Jingle Bell Jukebox” and “Comin’ Up Christmas Time.” There’s even a “Santa’s On His Way” medley made up of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” “Up on the House Top” and “Jolly Old St. Nicholas.”

Fifth grader Grant Best said even the familiar songs aren’t set to the same familiar tune.

“They’re more jazzy, more of a dance beat,” he said. “I like it because

they’re fast and fun, and I have a lot of energy.”

His classmate, Fiona Boxell, who has been in the choir since it began last year, said she sings a duet with a new introduction to “Let it Snow.”

“It’s not the same as what you hear all the time; it’s a new part,” she said.

Bring back the poodle skirts and blue suede shoes, Eastlake Elementary’s 1950s jukebox holiday concert will bring more cheer to your hearts than marshmallows in your hot chocolate.

“The songs are familiar but unique. We’re singing harmony on ‘the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.’ It’s really fun to sing with other students.”

Fifth grader Eliza Cannon joined choir at the urging of her friend Grace Castleberry, who performed last year’s pirate-themed Christmas show. Santa and the elves were on an island relaxing before Christmas and encountered pirates, who they then persuaded that it was better to give than to take before having a 1980s theme spring concert, with hits such as

“Footloose,” “Eye of the Tiger,” and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” In this year’s holiday concert, Eliza is singing a solo in “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” —“The three best words that best describe you are as follows, and I quote”: and then will be joined by the choir, half dressed in red, singing “Stink,” and half in green, singing “Stank,” before they all sing together, “Stunk.”

Eliza said during the two months of before-school weekly rehearsals, the choir learned the songs first by singing along to the words on a PowerPoint before singing them without them. Frost also posted the music on a Google classroom where choir members could access it and practice it at home.

That’s what Grace did.

“It’s all super fun, and everyone is getting into it,” she said. “It’s something we like doing.”

Her classmate Miles Nash is excited to perform it for parents and the community.

“I have a speaking part,” he said, adding that he likes it since he likes to perform in theater. “I did last year, too. It’s a lot of fun and makes my parents proud.”

Frost is a supporter of more arts education.

“I love it, and there’s not enough music and arts in the school,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for our students to sing and create memories.”

Ruby, in the show, agrees: “Thanks to you, kids, I’ve got more cheer in my heart than marshmallows in my famous hot chocolate,” she said. l

Guatemalan humanitarian trip teaches Paradigm students about culture, leadership and themselves

roducer and director Steven Sawalich once said: “Help the life of one person and you can help the community.”

By helping Guatemalan families build garden boxes and teach them planting techniques, a delegation from Paradigm High learned this first hand.

“We helped them build planter boxes and showed them how to plant herbs and seeds,” senior Sophie Nicholls said. “It was more than just helping; we saw what this meant to the families. They were so excited for this; it’s a change in the way they will live and that of their village.”

Nicholls was part of a 10-member group from Paradigm that connected with other volunteers from across the state to bring humanitarian efforts to the people of Panajachel, Guatemala. Her friend, Brianna Naylor, a recent Paradigm graduate, said that was the part that convinced her to volunteer to travel 2,800 miles.

“My favorite part was helping families and improve their quality of life,” she said.

“It changed their perspective, and it changed mine. I’ve never experienced any type of poverty; they didn’t show resentment for being poor. They were truly happy and shared whatever they had. They were humble and loving and showed us that there is more to life than just our daily lives.”

Through Cultiva International’s Youth Humanitarian Leadership Week, Paradigm students and other Utahns learned that the local Mayan people they were helping already had a 10-hour nutrition and garden box training where they learned the importance of growing vegetables and clearing a flat area near their homes that are in a mountainous area.

“It was part of the seed to plate education of Cultiva, where these people had to

show they wanted to make an improvement to the chronic condition of living in poverty,” said Paradigm teacher Jennifer Shaw, who led the group to Guatemala in July. “There is malnutrition, and it’s resulting in defects.

People aren’t growing because they don’t have enough vitamins and nutrients. Volunteers can hand out food baskets, but until the local people learn to go about growing vegetables for themselves, there will always be a problem.”

The volunteers broke up in smaller work teams and were accompanied by local villagers who would help translate. After riding in vans an hour or two into the countryside, they would unload chicken wire and supplies and walk uphill from house to house a couple miles to help the locals.

“We didn’t need to speak Spanish; we just needed to speak human,” Shaw said.

“We worked together, heart to heart. These were very poor people who were so grateful for the help.”

Working side by side, they built planter boxes for the Mayans’ gardens, placed compost in the box and put lattice on top, she said.

Naylor said she met a family of an elderly man who was overjoyed to have a helping hand.

“We went and helped with his daughter’s plot, where we planted radishes, carrots, onions, cabbage, lettuce and other leafy greens,” she said. “He was so happy and thankful to have a garden box next to the corn field.”

Nicholls said she helped a family of a grandmother, mother and little boy who was to have a birthday the next month. He was about 5 years old.

“They showed so much love when we came to help,” she said. “We showed them how to use a hand drill and how to plant so

that their plants would produce well.”

Shaw said Cultiva follows up with these new farmers and have learned that 98% of those who have planter boxes are still using them, some four years later. Already, Mayan families have built more than 2,000 boxes, with hundreds still wanting to be part of the program.

The Utahns also had a chance to learn about family life for these people living in cinderblock homes with tin roofs in the Mayan villages. Many of them collected rainwater to supplement their wells or tiny streams and had only one room as a sleeping area, Shaw said.

Naylor said their kitchens are outside and consist of a big sink separated into sections.

“They’d put water in different sections to wash and rinse clothes and their dishes,” she said.

During the volunteers’ stay, they slept in housing at Cultiva and ate anything from oatmeal and fried bananas for breakfast, to sandwiches while building planter boxes, to dinners of freshly made corn tortillas, tacos and tostadas.

Part of the week was dedicated to learning the culture of the area. The town is situated in the southwestern highlands, near Lake Atitlan, which is a body of water in a volcanic crater. Panajachel, sitting on the north shore, is known for vendors selling traditional handicrafts.

“The streets are cobblestone, and there are lots of venders and stores selling fruit and vegetables, almost like a farmer’s market, as well as handmade items,” Nicholls said.

Shaw said that “within Parajanchel, people walk or take tuk tuks around town and past all the shops crowded on Calle Santander. The whole country is mountainous and colorful. Even old school buses are glittery and painted with bright colors.”

Parajanchel also serves as a base to other Mayan villages where textiles are made.

The Paradigm group took a boat across the lake — they only way to reach some other towns — to see first hand how locals pulled off cotton from the plants and processed it.

“They’d spin it by hand onto a spindle, then they dyed it with natural colors from plants to weave intricate designs and create the softest cotton I’ve ever felt,” Shaw said.

Nicholls said through dying the cotton, they produced “some amazing bright and vibrant colors—ones we don’t have.”

They visited a local shop where they were introduced to a regional style of painting artisans used, featuring many of the Mayan villages and homes in the mountainous region. They also saw a demonstration of how locals would bring in their hides from cattle farms and create leather goods — purs-

es, wallets, jewelry and shoes.

Another stop was where they were shown the process of toasting and grinding up cacao beans into many percentages of chocolate and sold from candy to hot chocolate. And, of course, there were samples.

“The 100% chocolate was really dark and really good,” Nicholls said.

The group spent the afternoon at Lake Atitlan, many choosing to jump off a platform into the clear, blue lake, while others climbed down a cliff to the water’s edge.

“It was absolutely terrifying to jump straight down 30 feet into the lake, and it took all the courage I had to jump,” Naylor said.

“And then, I learned I had to do it again because they didn’t get a photo of me jumping.”

Another day, they hiked 7 miles up the steep mountains to nearly 7,000 feet for a view of Panajachel and Lake Atitlan before they ziplined that afternoon in the Atitlan Nature Reserve.

“I definitely was scared,” Nicholls said.

“We ziplined through a jungle, with monkeys watching, and had eight different platforms.

I don’t like heights, but it was an adrenaline rush and such an incredible experience.”

The week also focused on leadership.

They rose early for meditation, exercise and journal writing, which included a word prompt such as perspective, connection, acceptance, and also had three goals for the day and three things to make the day great. At night, Shaw said they reflected on how they could make the day better and how they accomplished their goals.

“We’d have an inner circle and share our highlights of the day and goals,” she said.

“We shared our hearts, our minds and souls.”

She added that many of the delegation still are journaling and setting goals months after their trip.

From the starting day, they had teamwork sessions to connect with one another and learned lessons in poverty — internal, or sadness and depression, versus external, or malnutrition and lack of money.

“We learned to understand that poverty is really a state of mind, and while external may show wealth, it was learning to help and be there for others, when we realized we could truly become happy internally,” she said. “It impacted my life; I’ve learned to simplify.”

Nicholls said that through sharing their dreams and fears and those who they admire or something they wanted to improve about themselves, they grew comfortable as a team.

“We were all nervous when we came, but we learned something super personal about each other and held each other up,” she said. “That changed the atmosphere, and we were a lot more open to ourselves, each other and helping people there.” l

Draper Tree Lighting Ceremony: Monday, Dec. 2 from 6-8 p.m. at the Draper City Park. This celebration will consist of lighting over 65,000 lights, including those on the large willow tree in the center of the park.

You can also visit with Santa, listen to live music, and stroll through the park. Each night after Dec. 2, the lights come on at 5:15 p.m. and turn off at 10:30 p.m.

Candy Cane Hunt: Monday, Dec. 9 from 4-5 p.m. at the Draper Historic Park, 12625 S. 900 East. Children ages 6 and younger will enjoy this free event that starts at 4 p.m. sharp. Not only will there be thousands of candy canes hidden throughout the park, some of those candy canes can be redeemed for a new holiday toy. Shaw has a 1950s retro shiny tree, dedicated to his grandparents, full of bright ornaments and tinsel. There are trees with themes of gingerbread, ski lodge, circus, hunting lodge and even one representing fairies and swamp creatures.

His decorations don’t look the same every year. Shaw said he rotates tree themes every year and even continues to add to them.

This year, in an upstairs room, Shaw plans to add a red, green and silver theme and also has plans to decorate a planter window with ornaments he bought while visiting Austria this past summer. In his kitchen, he will put up nine small accented trees.

The last thing he sets up is his 80-house Snow Village, which takes up an entire room.

He remembers his aunt giving him a house to start his village in 1993, about a dozen years before her death. Since then, Shaw purchased his houses for the village at the former department store, ZCMI, for $25. Now, he said, they range upward to $200.

Looking closely, the village comes alive with children having a snowball fight on the church grounds while others are sledding on a nearby hill. A family is putting up lights and a fireman is rescuing a cat in a tree.

Once the village is in place, his decorating is completed, usually by Thanksgiving weekend in time to share it with family and friends. However, Shaw doesn’t decorate alone. Through the years, he has enlisted the help of his three children. Although this year, he said it will mostly fall on his son to help with the 30 or more hours of decorating.

“I’m kind of a perfectionist,” Shaw said. “He will put them on the tree and feel he is contributing, but then I’ll move them to where I want them. I think after 15 years, he’s onto me so he deliberately puts them in the wrong place, so I have to find them first.”

While Shaw has no time in the near future to stop decorating his home, he knows that his motive — “to make my children feel the magic as I did in my aunt’s home” — was reached and will live on.

“They all are interested in parts of the decorations and have called ‘dibs’ on some,” Shaw said.

This year, Shaw admits he’s behind in decking the halls, as he just became Bingham’s principal in mid-September and has been spending more hours at school.

However, in early November, Shaw said he would have his home ready before his office staff would come to visit for the holidays.

Next year, he plans to open his winter wonderland to the school’s staff and faculty.

“I enjoy the way the house feels,” Shaw said. “I love the happy spirit of the season.” l

variety of products and offers online games and sweepstakes. According to the company, the online games have more than 10 million unique monthly visitors. Nearly $400 million in prizes have been awarded.

Utah residents have scored big with Publishers Clearing House before, including a Sandy woman who was gifted $25,000 last December, and a Salt Lake City man who won $10,000 in January.

That means there’s a lot more entries, and the people that are entering every day probably have a better chance of winning.”

“You can play the lottery and pay a dollar for each ticket,” he said. “I didn’t pay any dollars or anything. They sent me an email every day, and I opened it and said, OK go.

South Jordan honors those who have served

n Nov. 9, South Jordan officials organized a breakfast in honor of veterans at the South Jordan Community Center.

At the end of WWI, United States President Woodrow Wilson declared Nov. 11, Armistice Day. After WWII, this became Veterans Day. Since this time, we set aside this day to honor and express our gratitude to our service men and women. Memorial Day in May is a day to remember our service people who did not return or have passed on, but Veteran’s day is to remember all of those who served, living and dead, both in peacetime and in war.

All branches of the military services were represented at the function, and vets from many conflicts from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Middle Eastern conflicts as well as other policing conflict attended. Attendees ate a hearty breakfast of pancakes, eggs. bacon and a large selection of fruits and muffins. They shared experiences of their heroism and their gratefulness to have survived. Some mentioned other veterans who did not survive. These people put their lives on hold to defend the freedom of America, and their love of this land was apparent. They expressed their stories with pride and with humility at a job well done.

Many veterans exchanged stories of valor and dedication. During WWII, Patrick Harris was a navigator on B17 flying fortress dropping bombs on Germany. After 18 bombing missions, Germany surrendered.

He was supposed to fly 25 missions, and he expressed worry that if he had flown 25 missions, he may not have survived.

A microphone was passed around and the veterans told of their service of flying supply missions in Vietnam, intelligence gathering in Iraq, and combat and support missions in the air on the ground and the ocean. l Residents serve veterans breakfast on Nov.9 at the South Jordan Community Center.

South Jordan officials encourage residents to be idle free

he Salt Lake Valley is one of the areas in the U.S. with the poorest air quality.

Often, in winter months, during long-term inversions, Salt Lake Valley ranks No. 1 in the worst air quality in the entire country.

Salt Lake Valley’s mountain ranges trap stagnant air. As the stagnant air remains trapped, it fills with more and more pollution from the populated areas of the valley. This is not a new phenomenon; the native populations of Utah were well aware of this issue. The population is now growing, and the pollution is worsening with the growth.

On Oct. 15, the South Jordan City Council discussed a Resolution Item presented by City Attorney Ryan Loose. This resolution would ask people to be mindful of idling their automobiles for more than one minute.

South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey put forward a resolution to the city council. Ramsey said, regarding the resolution proposal, that it was “an effort to see what we in South Jordan can do to move ever so slightly toward cleaner air.”

South Jordan leaders are trying to make a small difference in air quality and decided to put forward a resolution instead of an ordinance. The reason being an ordinance has to be enforced as a law. Being an idle-free community is almost impossible to enforce. SoJo officials would have to fine everyone who is idling longer than a minute and give them a ticket.

not idle their vehicle for more than one minute. The goal is just to help residents to be more mindful of the pollution their cars are producing. SoJo leaders even suggested putting up signs to help remind people to idle as little as possible. The resolution was passed with a unanimous vote.

Utah officials monitor air quality yearround. There are laws to help minimize the air quality, such as wood burning only on days with no or little pollution in the air. Other efforts include yearly emission standards and testing for automobiles. UTA TRAX and buses can help to cut the emissions.

Some help may be on the way in the future, as automakers are designing gasoline-powered cars that will stop the engine each time the car is stopped; when the accelerator is activated, the car will start the motor again. Electric cars are also helpful, but the electricity for Salt Lake Valley is produced in the valley. So, while that pollution is lessened by the cars, producing electricity for the cars at the power plants still causes some pollution.

This problem will likely never be totally solved, but each person doing what he or she can when the air quality is poor could limit the pollution that becomes a significant health hazard to all of us. Instead of idling at take-out windows, perhaps going inside and waiting might be an option. Carpooling or combining errands to lessen time on the road might also help. l

the woods. Planning for the event began in July, Stephanie Devine said.

“We co-host the event with Daybreak’s Santa’s Arrival, so Santa and Mrs. Claus come, and kids sit with them and get a picture and get a little gift,” she said. “It brings a lot of families.”

Devine has played a pivotal role in bringing farmers markets to Daybreak after moving to the community a little over two years ago.

“It’s such a perfect community for a farmers market,” Devine said. “We said, ‘Hey, we’d like to do this.’”

In addition to a visit from St. Nick, another appeal of the market is to support local businesses and be active in the community.

“We have quite a few vendors that are Daybreak residents, so that makes a difference,” Devine said. “They love supporting their neighbors.”

Devine said about 60 vendors are expected at this year’s market, in addition to four musical groups who will be performing live.

One returning vendor will be Misbehavin Clothing Co., a local brand focused on women’s clothing with an online shop and a store in Pleasant Grove.

Misbehavin Clothing Co. owner Starla Olson said her positive experience at the market last year made her want to return this year.

“Everybody that came last year, you could just tell that it was such a good community,” Olson said. “They really do appreciate what everyone’s bringing. They really do support small business. To me, that’s so important. It’s about gathering and supporting each other versus feeling like a competition.

It had such a positive vibe.”

Olson said because many local markets focus on handmade-only items, they can be hard to break into. Before opening the brickand-mortar store in April, Misbehavin Clothing Co. was online only, so attending the Daybreak Winter Market as a vendor was a great opportunity to get out into the community, Olson said.

“I knew that doing online was hard and that I wanted to connect with different communities,” she said. “When you do markets, you understand what communities want. It’s a great way to connect with people.”

Olson said at this year’s market, Misbehavin Clothing Co. will have winter apparel such as sweaters, jeans and coats, as well as a gift section.

“Any kind of last-minute Christmas gifts you’ll need, we’ll have a place for that as well,” she said.

Last year’s market, on Dec. 9, was the community’s biggest event of the year.

“We try to make it as festive as we can,” Devine said, with many vendors decorating their booths. Devine said she and her son also get into the holiday spirit and dress up as elves.

She said she hopes the attendees of this year’s winter market will be able to “feel what an amazing community we have.”

“It’s just such a great feeling to be surrounded by people who support small business and like to be part of a community,” Devine said. “Being a part of a community or group that’s bigger than yourself is so important, and that’s what this is becoming.”

To drink or not to drink – South Jordan water quality

iving in an American city usually has the advantage of having safe drinking water piped directly into your home. You can walk to the faucet and with a twist of the wrist fresh clean water fills your glass. Many people take this for granted and may seldom think of this

perk until for some reason the status quo is interrupted.

In early October, a South Jordan resident contacted SoJo officials and voiced a concern over water quality in the Daybreak community. SoJo leaders immediately reviewed the

information. After testing 30 different elements at 20 sites over two days, city leaders declared the water in South Jordan was safe to use and to drink. A statement from Public Relations Officer Rachael Van Cleave was issued on Oct. 23. She said, “Our residents can feel comfortable with the quality of water that we have in our city.” More investigations are ongoing with state and county organizations to determine what were the real causes of the resident’s concerns. City officials reported that with all the expedited fees and the extra water testing that the cost ended up at more than $11,000.

SoJo leaders take water quality seriously. There has never previously been anything of this magnitude or attention in the past in the city. The concern was addressed immediately, and appropriate testing was done to eliminate any concerns. SoJo officials, however, do continually test the water quality to ensure the safety of residents. Every month, 80 water samples are collected from designated locations throughout the city. Results of this extended list of testing items is reported to residents in a detailed water quality report. This is mailed out to residents once each year.

South Jordan leaders used the media to release information to residents regarding

this current water quality issue. However, what would happen if in the future a significant threat to resident’s health and safety were identified? How would SoJo officials notify the residents of a water safety issue or any other type of emergency? Some phone numbers — mostly landlines — are on file at South Jordan. Officials and they would contact Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center in West Valley City to send out a message to the numbers that they have on file. South Jordan residents can register their cell phone numbers with the city by texting SJCINFO to 85775.

Another method of notification in an emergency is Reverse 911, which notifies you on your phone if there is an emergency or any other public safety issue in your area.

STEM Fest: One great big education party for South Jordan Elementary sixth-graders

outh Jordan Elementary sixth grader Lincoln Mills said he loved the pressure experiment he tried as he learned about how scientists drill oil, then looked at a space exhibit with his classmates Owen Jefferies, Drew McClement and Copper Hale.

“I like how people live in space,” Owen said. “It’s really cool to dream about maybe working for NASA.” Nearby, a second South Jordan Elementary group was checking out virtual reality, a

remote-controlled car, solar panels, how air conditioning works and the STEM Action Center bus at the annual STEM Fest.

“When the water holds energy, it bubbles and separates the hydrogen and oxygen; I’ve always been interested in energy,” said the want-to-be surgeon Analynn Solano, who was with her sixth grade classmates Aryn Weaver, Ellyse Staley, Brandi Vehikite, Mary Skarda and Morgan Walbeck, who added, “It’s fun getting to learn new things we haven’t seen before.”

STEM Fest is an event which attracts up to 20,000 sixth through 10th grade students, who become engaged in the 500 activities, exhibits and demonstrations focused on science, technology, engineering and math. While the event may lure students into potential future jobs in one of the 50 corporations from across Utah who staff booths, organizers say it’s also meant to be a fun way for students to gain hands-on experiences that will spark their imaginations and make connections with educators and innovators and see how every day learning is applied to real life.

Sixth grade teacher Bonnie Crockett helped lead the 120 South Jordan students to the event.

“We like that kids get a lot of experienc-

es from these sessions and try things that we don’t have the means to facilitate,” she said.

“They’re creatively thinking and learning all different sciences, some that aren’t in our core curriculum.”

Some of those different fields may be learning about drug testing, something student Jordyn Farr found “it may be what I want to do as a career.” Classmate William Minnick learned what Rocky Mountain Power does when the power goes out, while Amelia Le Jeune took an interest in UV light. Sixth grader Olivia Dekle took part in an infectious diseases experiment using alkaline, vinegar, water and Sprite, while her peer Brooke Bott added, “I just like to test stuff, and I’m getting to do it here.”

Sixth grade teacher Darren Stirland said the STEM exhibits aimed at kids made it like a “great big education party.”

“There’s a huge interest in those fields and a lot of excitement among our students for their future in tech fields,” he said. “The kids really get ramped up on STEM. We implement a lot of hands-on activities in our classrooms, but this may open more possibilities to us.”

Some of the STEM activities planned for the year include making cars created with index cards, four mints, a straw and masking

tape. The object: “To think creatively with limited materials in making a mint mobile.”

Stirland also hopes to lead students in an egg drop — not just the normal one where students may cover the egg in bubble-wrap or package it in with Styrofoam peanuts and drop off a ladder or the school roof.

“We are hoping to drop the eggs from a drone, hundreds of feet up, so students will need to rethink their engineering approaches,” he said, adding that an application for a drone was placed with Jordan Education Association.

Stirland also hoped to bring in a retired drone pilot from the Air Force to talk about his career as well as extend the opportunity to others in the field he hoped to connect with at STEM Fest — as well as discover more ways to implement STEM into his teaching this year.

The heart of smartness: Prepared Merit Medical employees save colleague’s life, honored by SoJo City Council

Suddenly, his eyes closed. He fell backward.

He would later describe the experience as “someone switching me off.”

The sound of his head smacking a counter “was a sound I have never heard,” recalls co-worker Teresa Salazar.

Salazar said she perceived the unique, sickening sound above the whirr and grind of the machinery and even above the Ozzy Osbourne she intentionally had blasting into one ear, to drown out the workplace noise and to keep her motivated on her work.

With the heavy-metal still wailing in her ear as she turned to look, she saw Rake convulsing on the ground.

Thanks to the quick thinking and procedures used on his behalf by his fateful “dream team” of rescuer-colleagues, Rake is lucky to be alive.

“The beauty of it?” said Cindy Landrum, supervisor of Rake and his colleagues and director of manufacturing for Merit. “These three took action.”

“My heart is very, very full,” said a humble Rake, now speaking literally and figuratively. “I’m so thankful that this company and this management team had the foresight to do CPR and external defibrillator training.”

Rake himself indicates having been trained in both procedures, ready to help others in the future.

The lifesaving colleagues have gone through their own processes, dealing with the traumatic experience that ended so well.

“Honestly, it has taken me awhile to accept that I helped save Jack’s life,” says Salazar. “It’s taken me a while to be proud of what I did.”

“We’re his family,” said Pressley.

outh Jordan officials hosted a town hall meeting at the Public Safety Building in SoJo on Nov. 9. The representatives organizing the Town Hall were: Lincoln Filmore, Utah State Senator District 10; Susan Pulsifer, Utah State House of Representatives District 50, South Jordan; Kim Coleman, Utah State House of Representatives District 42, West Jordan; and Candice Pierucci, Utah State House of Representatives District 52, Herriman (replacing John Knotwell).

At the beginning of the meeting, each representative gave a review of what he or she was working on.

Pulsifer is sponsoring a bill that addresses some of the issues of vaping, specifically targeting vaping by minors. The vaping apparatus can be taken from students using them in public schools and not returned to them.

If there are suspicions of uses that included controlled substances by the student, it would be turned over to proper authorities for evidence. But otherwise, the e-cigarettes could be destroyed. The second part is to increase the information given to students regarding the risks and health concerns of vaping. The third part of the bill is determining why students choose vaping as well as working to change this growing trend.

Pierucci is new, and she was appointed by Gov. Gary Herbert to replace John Knotwell.

She is a long-time resident of Herriman. She is working on a bill that has to do with busing students in Herriman.

For Coleman, it’s about protecting her community. “There are people outside of our communities that have designs on what we should do in our communities on the west side,” she said. “I hate that, and I am always trying to fight against that.”

She is fighting back against outside interests in the state that are trying to control how the west-side communities are growing. She feels it is up to the communities themselves to decide how to grow and how much. She is reticent to accept outside interests trying to control the west side. She said these parties think they are smarter or they do not want things to happen in their community, so they are pushing to send these things to the west side.

Filmore is working on lots of smaller bills.

• The age of delivery drivers in Utah is

19; he is trying to lower it to 18.

• Working to change a regulation that schools require a background check for employees, but if you are below 19 no one can look at the background check.

• The federal government has eliminated the definition of a dependent so Utahns saw a tax increase. He’s working to restore that.

• He’s working to change a tax on businesses that locate in Utah, manufacture in Utah but sell everything outside of Utah.

• He’s working to try to protect individual land rights against government land grabbing where the land is held in limbo for years at a time.

• He wants to change the law so people can have little free library boxes on their property if they choose.

• Landscapers are classified as builders in Utah, and they are required to pursue the same continuing education as builders; the education is not related to them. He’s working to change that.

• He’s working to change solar panels from personal property classification to real property classification for business interests.

• Mosquito abatement must notify where and when they are going to spray in your area so you can take appropriate action.

• He’s working so expired prescription drugs can be refilled for short term if there are issues where physicians cannot be reached immediately to prevent health issues and deaths.

The meeting was opened to questions and remarks from the attendees to give feedback to the representatives. One of the main areas of discussion was traffic.

The last portion of the meeting was devoted to the new Utah Tax restructure. This is a tax cut for most Utahns and it will give an exemption to residents on social security, as Utah is one of only two states in the country that still taxes Social Security benefits.

The disadvantages of the bill are that the tax on food will be reinstated. There will also be a higher gasoline tax. Also, some services will also be taxes such as landscaping services and others.

These representatives want your feedback on the tax bill so they know how to vote.

All of these issues affect South Jordan residents. Representatives are asking the people of South Jordan and other South Valley cities to let them know how they can help. They want to know the best way to represent the people who elected them.

Hawthorn’s Grand Event personalizes history, unites generations

wo grandmothers stood outside a Hawthorn Academy classroom door, eagerly awaiting to be united with their granddaughters to participate in the Grand Event.

“Scarlett was really excited that she could invite me to do a grandparent activity and have me see the book fair,” Cherie Dahl said. “I love to be included.”

Hawthorn Academy’s Grand Event is an opportunity for family members to interact with their students in the classroom and see their work as well as visit the book fair, said Principal Jeremy Craig.

“We encourage those who can have an active role to come, participate and support their student,” he said. “We recognize it takes a village, not just the parents, to help students.

It’s important that anytime students can get academic support, they have it.”

Collette Osburn connected with her second-grade granddaughter, Kylee. Together, they filled out a form of activities that Kylee likes to do as well as ones that Osburn liked when she was in second grade.

“She likes to read like I did,” Osburn said.

“She likes ‘Be Brave Little Panda,’ while I read ‘The Boxcar Children.’”

Dahl not only united with Scarlett but with her friend Rhyatt, who called Dahl, “Great Aunt Cherie” as her adoptive great aunt.

Second grade teacher Jennifer Darcy said it was a fun, engaging activity where family members could bond over similar interests.

“One of our teachers came up with it,” Dara said. “It’s fun and a chance for them to learn about each other’s lives at different times.”

In addition to books they like, the activity included where and when they were born, their pets, who is someone they looked up to, siblings, what they did for fun and what was their favorite thing about school.

Connie Hinerman and her fourth grade granddaughter, Sophie, filled out a similar but more extensive questionnaire, one that includ-

ed such things as their favorite songs, movie stars and the price of gasoline.

“I think it’s a cool idea and a great way to connect to family and strengthen family ties,” Hinerman said. “She showed me around her classroom, and we’re so proud of her work.

I remember reading books from the bookmobile.”

Sophie said she learned a few things about her grandmother and time period she grew up.

“I learned that things were very cheap then, like soda can cost 25 cents,” she said.

“She showed me the laptop she works on

and how they Google to find information; and she learned how school was different when I was in school and we had to write down everything,” he said. “Now, we’re going to look at the book she’s eyeing. It’s a win-win to get a book she’ll enjoy and read.”

Third grade teacher DeAwna Egege said she’s appreciative of the many grandparents who not only purchased books for their grandchildren but also for some kids who didn’t have family come or for her classroom.

“Some grandparents came from one hour away, and last year, I had one who came from out-of-state as a surprise; it was sweet,” she said. “With our questionnaires, we’re taking Polaroid photos so they can take both of them home as a memory.”

Egege, who grew up away from her grandparents, appreciates the efforts the students’ grandparents are making.

“I love when a grandparent is interested in volunteering, even if it’s just while they’re in town for a visit,” she said. “I had grandparents share what it was like, and students learned the difference in technology and electronics from dial telephones to cell phone development and even the difference in filming to today’s video cameras. It’s a different approach to educating students about our history but one which strengthens family connections and personalizes learning.” l

he arena full of Utah Jazz and Portland Trailblazer fans grew quiet as two spotlights focused on 90 students dressed in solid red, white and blue shirts.

Amongst the students was sixth-grader and two year choir member, Eme Jones.

“I wasn’t that nervous,” she said. “We have sung for the (Salt Lake City NBA G league) Stars before.”

Even when the announcer said the national anthem would be sung by South Jordan Elementary’s choir, Eme’s classmate and fellow choir member, Ava Hall, said it wasn’t nerve-wracking to be standing in front of all those people, but it actually was exciting.

“I really enjoy singing and performing is

really fun,” she said.

The school’s fourth- through sixth-grade choir opened the preseason NBA game with the national anthem, under the direction of thirdgrade teacher Scott Knight.

“It was so awesome,” he said. “When the announcer said the national anthem would be sung by our school, the whole crowd went wild.”

About 250 to 300 of those in attendance were family and friends of the choir members, some who had taken them to school before the bell rang on Wednesday mornings to practice or picked them up afterschool on Fridays to get in a second rehearsal.

“We have been given the opportunity to

sing the national anthem at three assemblies before performing it at the Vivint Smart Home Arena, but this was the best they’ve done,” Knight said. “It was so cool to feel the positive energy. I was so proud of them.”

The choir’s evening began earlier than the 7 p.m. tip-off, with a 4 p.m. sound check. The choir didn’t perform on the Jazz court since they had so many choir members, Knight said.

“Everyone auditioned for the choir this year because we knew we’d be singing for the Jazz,” Ava said about the 100-member choir, 10 of which weren’t able to sing that night. “It’s exciting to be singing in such a large group.”

Knight said typically the choir has about 75 members who audition. He also said that everyone makes it into the choir and he just holds auditions so students can gain the experience.

With the Jazz performance, sixth-grade teacher Bonnie Crockett stepped up to help co-direct the number of students in the choir.

After the sound check, students were invited to watch the Jazz warm up in the first few rows.

“Some of the choir members got signatures,” Ava said, adding that others had players say hi to them.

“It’s a great opportunity to be that close up and watch the players,” Eme said.

Knight said the choir also ate dinner as the parents coordinated a dinner for 90 members that night.

Even at showtime, the choir members kept their cool, focusing their attention on their singing.

“My parents saw me on the Jumbotron, but I was focused on Mr. Knight,” Ava said.

Their excitement didn’t die down after the national anthem, or even while cheering on the Jazz, who got edged out by the Blazers for the win. Instead, the choir members focused on their three performances of their Halloween-themed “Zombie Reunion” black light concert.

Even now, many of the choir members are focused on their Christmas concert and their performances at the capitol rotunda. They usually perform either at Festival of Trees or the Dickens Festival as well. Renee Jackson will be the assistant director to Knight.

Knight also said many of the student choir members also will be involved in their musical rehearsals. South Jordan Elementary will put on “Mary Poppins” April 16-18 and again, April 20, 2020.

“We’ll be performing in the spring at the Stars game March 27 (against Stockton Kings),” he said, adding that the choir also will hold its showtune concert at the end of the school year.

“I’ve received so many emails from parents, thanking me for this once in a lifetime experience of singing at the Jazz game. The kids, the parents - they’re so grateful. For me, nothing is better than helping kids discover their talents and helping them develop them.” l

Thrills and chills for Eastlake’s ‘Thriller’

There were thrills and there were chills for the Eastlake Elementary witches, werewolves, ghosts, ghouls and goblins as they saw 25 former sixth grade students in David Berry’s class turn into zombies this Haunted Halloween season.

After two months of practice, these zombies learned the steps and danced to “Thriller” at two school assemblies with their Beverley Taylor Sorensen arts specialist Jackie Webster, who appeared as Michael Jackson from his jacket to his red pants. Webster said

she grew up loving Jackson’s music, but her cousin was actually friends with him. “She would take her kids over to his house where they’d play and hang out. She said he was just kind of like a kid who wanted to have fun,” Webster said. The tradition of dancing to “Thriller” started more than one decade ago when Webster, her sister and friend performed it at Foothills Elementary. Since then, Webster instructed students at Foothills before coming to Eastlake to continue teaching the steps. Sixth-grader Reese

Eastlake recently hosted New York Times best-selling author Jason Wright, who, with the help of Eastlake student leaders, re-enacted the story about how he was treated on the bus as a sixth grade student. Every day, he took the bus to school, and every day, there was not one student who would let him sit beside him or her on the school bus. So, one day, he told Eastlake students, instead of getting on the bus, he hid behind a tree. What he didn’t count on was that a boy on the bus saw him and from that day forward, his parents made sure he did not miss the bus again. That one boy, who was an eighth grader, was named Roy. The

next day and the next and the next, Roy not only invited him to sit with him, but he was kind and talked with him. Wright, who wrote “Christmas Jars,” said that act of kindness changed his whole outlook on life because someone took the time to be nice to him. Then, Wright asked the students to make their own pledge based on his story. “He challenged every student to be a Roy and find ways to be kind to other people,” said Eastlake Principal Suzie Williams, adding that she will be reminding students to be kind like Roy during the school announcements.

Jordan Ridge students take on leadership roles in school action teams

ourth grader Samantha Hansen teaches her peers, give examples and answer their questions instead of just hoping they learn while she does her own project.

As Jordan Ridge Elementary’s coding team president, she knows that by doing first things first, it will create a win-win for everyone.

“I think learning is more powerful than showing,” she said. “They might not remember something if I just do it. This way, it’s fun for them and fun for me. In the long run, they will learn and catch up to those with more advanced skills so we can do something together at the end of the year.”

Samantha is just one of several students learning leadership skills and responsibilities.

The school recently unveiled action teams, ones designed for students to lead and be of service to each other, their school and community, said third grade teacher Kim Sanders.

“We asked ourselves ‘how can we build more leadership?’ and realized that there are leadership opportunities all around us, so we developed action teams,” Sanders said. “Kids are naturally good and want to help teach others and serve others. We’re seeing students stepping up, learning to be leaders and good team members, and that is unifying our school.”

The teams range from garden team, where they composted the school garden and planted daffodil and tulip bulbs, and a kindness action team, which created paper owls and had notes of encouragement and gratitude added as feathers to the birds, to the 25-member student leadership team, which leads school assemblies, to a recycling team, where students take turns to lead, she said.

“We have leadership within our choir, a lunch bunch that helps clean cafeteria tables, a lost and found team that folds items found and displays them to all kinds of teams that pro-

vide learning, fun and service,” Sanders said.

One popular team has been the bathroom action team, where students monitor the restrooms for cleanliness. If it’s kept tidy, they can update it with vinyl stickers as part of their efforts to upgrade or “remodel” them. They’ve talked about themes such as Marvel, “Star Wars,” tropical islands or even basketball, with painting the garbage as a standard and hoop, she said.

“We’ve told them it’s all in your cart, and they can vote on what they want to do,” Sanders said. “They’re learning ownership of shared space, and it’s exciting to see them realize they have control over what is happening in their bathrooms. This is an opportunity for the kids to take charge of their own learning and take care of their own spaces. They’re being leaders in so many ways, and it’s important that they are learning to demonstrate these skills.”

On a bulletin board near the cafeteria is a listing of the action teams, where anyone can be a part once an application is filed. Many of the teams are suggested by students and faculty and staff act as advisers.

Sixth grade teacher Frankie Walton said the action teams already have been beneficial.

“This gives a lot of kids the opportunity to show they can make a difference and take part of their school,” she said. “They’re learning it’s their school and they can be leaders in it.”

There also are leader boards being designed and updated in the front foyer of the school.

“We are learners who lead,” Principal Melissa Beck said. “We are encouraging students to become leaders and want to help them succeed and celebrate their learning.”

The action team members may arrive to school in the wee hours to put up the school flag or lead safety patrol, remain behind after lunch recess to ensure the playground equipment is put away or stay after school for interests such as drama, robotics and coding.

Sanders said Samantha is learning how to be in front of people and explain procedures.

She’s also learning to plan their activities, manage the group and be responsible.

“She’s so gifted and is sharing her passion with others so they can learn and excel at it as well,” Sanders said. “It’s a student-driven club.”

Samantha said it began when her father, Chris, came and taught her class about coding last year. Since then, he takes on teaching the students with coding and programming experience, while Samantha introduces concepts such as variables and animating to beginners.

“It’s important that we know enough programming for our future jobs,” Samantha said.

“I like doing it, and it’s fun to have a club with peers who have similar interests.” l

Tight-knit Miners look to keep things rolling in girls basketball

A

fter spending the past two seasons in Region 4, the Bingham girls basketball team moves back to its former home: Region 3. The Miners are looking for the same results from the former league.

Winning a title.

Bingham went 7-1 in league play and 18-7 overall a year ago. It was the third straight region title for the Miners, who will now contend with Copper Hills, Herriman, Jordan, Riverton and West in the standings.

Before jumping into region action, the Miners will play a full slate of non-league games, beginning with a road game at East, two days before Thanksgiving on Nov. 26.

“We are very excited for this season,” head coach Charron Mason said. “The girls have been working very hard to be successful this year. We want to compete in every game and do our best. We want to continue playing as a team and working together both on and off the court.”

Mason has a trio of senior to rely on for leadership and production. Point guard Ameleya Angilau averaged nearly eight points a game last season. She’ll run the offense this season, something Mason said she is comfortable doing. “[Angilau] is an amazing point guard and a great leader in work ethic and intelligence,” Mason said. “She knows basketball

and gets the different strategies to win. Her teammates love playing with her because she is so competitive.”

Center/forward Jaycee Lichtie is an imposing force in the middle. Mason also likes her attitude and commitment to the team.

She was the second-leading scorer on the team last season by averaging more than 10 points a contest. “[Lichtie] is a vocal, cheerful leader,” Mason said. “She works hard and is very powerful. The girls love playing with her because she is hilarious.”

Mason said guard Sammy Holman is a great shooter and an “awesome team player.” She helps calm and focus the team when things start to slip away. She is also confident with the ball in her hands.

One of the advantages Mason has with this group is that the players are familiar with one another. The Miners have a lot of experience, as team members have been together through the highs and lows of previous seasons. Mason is also pleased that this isn’t an ego-driven squad. Instead, everyone is concerned about the team, not individual accolades.

“The girls know each other really well and have been playing together for a long time,” she said. “They love playing for each other, and they love competing. It is a fun team to be a part of because everyone wants the team to succeed above anything else.”

Lichtie couldn’t agree more. She enjoys the positive feelings the team exudes.

“I love the girls on the team,” she said.

“We are all competitive, and we want to do

our best.”

As the season gets underway, Mason has orchestrated a highly intense environment at practice. She knows it’s important to maintain this mindset as the Miners get into the season. She has also emphasized dedication to the team’s goals and capitalizing on each other’s strengths.

The Utah High School Activities Association has instituted a new Ratings Percentage Index to seed teams for the state tournament. Region standings no longer dictate postseason positions. Instead a formula, based on teams’ records and their opponents’ records, determine placement. Every team will qualify for the Class 6A state tournament.

Mason believes the team’s early season schedule should prepare the players for region and state tournament action.

“We face tough competitors throughout the state,” she said. “Our preseason should provide us some tough competition, and we hope that will prepare us to play in a good region. We are excited for these challenges.”

Bingham’s players appear ready and primed for another successful season.

“I will hold everyone to high standards and makes sure we are all working hard,” Lichtie said. l

I

n a sport like swimming, numbers make a big difference.

Swim teams accumulate points by totaling performances in each individual event. If the team doesn’t have swimmers to compete in different event, it’s difficult to keep up with teams that have multiple swimmers in each race.

At Bingham, head coach Rachael Kankamp understands how important it is to build a deep program. Not only is it important to have a large team with capable swimmers, but the athletes must be willing to put in the work.

“The end goal is to have as many kids qualify for the state meet as possible,” Kankamp said. “We always want to have a big team with each kid having multiple swims. In order to meet this goal, the kids are going to have to commit to the team. They need to show up for practice and put in 100% effort each day.”

Fortunately for Kankamp, her swimmers appear to have the right mindset to compete.

As the team prepares for the season, she has been impressed with everyone’s dedication.

“The team’s biggest strength is their work ethic,” she said. “When they are at practice, they are putting in the effort. They have positive attitudes and come to practice ready to work.”

Junior Nate Rock will lead the boys team. He specializes in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Not only does Kankamp like his talent, but she appreciates the way he supports everyone else on the team. He’s also a teachable swimmer.

“He is always cheering for his teammates and always has a positive attitude,” Kankamp said. “Nate is always very attentive and implements any corrections.”

Seniors Heidi Andersen and Jessica Gilchrist are two of the top swimmers on the girls team. Andersen swims the 50 and 100 freestyle, while Gilchrist races in the 100 free and 100 backstroke. “[Andersen] is easy to talk to and never complains,” Kankamp said. “She is a friend to everyone on the team. She works hard every single day. [Gilchrist] is the one that makes people laugh. She is always cracking jokes and keeps the team’s morale high.”

The Miners hope to climb up the standings at the state meet this year. Last season, the girls placed 10th, and the boys were 16th.

One of the biggest barriers to improvement may be staying healthy. Kankamp said last season, a lot of swimmers combatted illnesses in January and February.

“They need to be taking care of themselves in by eating healthy, staying hydrated and getting plenty of sleep,” she said.

Kankamp loves this time of year when she can watch her athletes progress and develop.

“I’m most looking forward to seeing the kids achieve their individual goals,” she said.

“There is nothing like seeing them swim faster than they thought they ever could.”

The Miners hit the pool for their first meet of the season on Nov. 15, 16 when they take part in the Bingham Invitational at the Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center. l

I

t’s rare for the Bingham football team finish its season so early.

For the past 15 seasons, Bingham has arguably been the most dominant, consistent program in the state. Heading into this season, since 2005, the team had amassed seven state titles, 13 region championships, 13 seasons with double-digit victories and five undefeated seasons.

The 2019 campaign was much more challenging for the Miners.

After a dominant 36-14 victory over Fremont in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs on Nov. 1, the Miners fell at home to East, 20-16, on Nov. 8. It was the first time since 2011 that Bingham lost a quarterfinals game. The Miners had reached the semifinals every year since.

The loss was especially frustrating because Bingham had defeated East at home earlier in the season on Sept. 27. That win was the first of five in a row for the Miners heading into the quarterfinals. In this playoff matchup—a rematch of the 2017 6A championship that Bingham won 27-14—East took a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Miners struck back on a 6-yard touchdown run from Troy Mehn to tie things up at 14-apiece at halftime.

The second half was a defensive battle.

East scored a TD midway through the third quarter but missed the extra points. The Miners couldn’t get their offense moving but managed to hold the Leopards back the rest of the way. However, Bingham’s only points in the second half came on a safety with under a minute to play.

Bingham wrapped up its season with an 8-3 record, leaving the Miners with their fewest victories since going 4-7 in 2003.

There was plenty to celebrate in 2019, though. The Miners extended their streak of region titles to eight. Bingham went 4-1 in a competitive Region 3, sharing the championship with East and Herriman. Bingham’s 130 points in region games were the most in the league.

Don’t be surprised to see the Miners bounce back and make a deeper state tournament run in 2020. Bingham returns its starting quarterback, Mehn, who threw 12 touchdowns and ran for three more. Junior running backs Cael Wightman and Carter Shulsen got valuable reps in varsity action this season, while leading receiver Isaiah Glasker will come back for his senior season. Junior defensive lineman Vilianmi Pouha racked up 51 tackles and four sacks. Junior Samuel Sinoti had 39 tackles. l

What to know about HIV risk factors, prevention and latest treatment

ecember is an important time on the national awareness calendar. It is officially recognized as AIDS Awareness Month. Dec. 1 is recognized worldwide as AIDS Awareness Day. Now is time to learn more about human immunodeficiency virus or HIV. HIV is a virus that develops into AIDS without the proper care and antiretroviral drugs. There are exciting new prevention measures for HIV, and there is a national need for more awareness. HIV wasn’t just a passing Hollywood scare of the 1980s. There are still newly diagnosed patients each year in Utah.

Kevin DeMass is a registered pharmacist with the state of Utah and a guru on HIV support. He is a trustee for the Utah AIDS Foundation and owner of The Apothecary Shoppe (www.apothecaryshoppeut.com), an independent community pharmacy and part of the Good Neighbor Pharmacy network in Salt Lake City (82 S. 1100 East, Suite 104).

His goal is to help patients already diagnosed and educate everyone about prevention measures. DeMass believes knowledge is a key factor to someday eradicating HIV in Utah’s population and beyond.

DeMass can show anyone the statistical data. HIV is being diagnosed now most often at the ages of 13-34. It’s not just an STD (sexually transmitted disease) prevalent among the “promiscuous.” It can be more comfortable to think it’s not a problem in monogamous life. Actually, HIV is spread in ways one might not realize. “A low-risk life is not a zero-risk life,” DeMass said.

Who is at risk for possible exposure?

DeMass explained who should be paying attention.

“You’re working in the ER, you’re a first responder, you’re a member of the SLC police department, you’re a dental assistant, you come upon an accident, you are a teacher and a child cuts their hand during cut-andpaste in the afternoon.” People of any age can be carriers. And people in many professions can be exposed.

HIV can also be spread by sharing needles, even one sample of heroin at a party.

Or exposure can happen at a medical clinic where an employee gets poked when handling or cleaning surgical instruments. Do employers have a plan to protect medical and dental workers? Do staff members know what to do if they get cut, punctured or splashed in the eye? HIV is a crucial staff meeting subject.

If you have an exposure to an HIV positive person, there’s now an approved protocol for immediate treatment.

Actually, there are two new treatment methods for the prevention of HIV transmission. The two methods are called PrEP and PEP. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) is for people who do not have HIV but are at risk of getting HIV. Treatment is a simple daily pill.

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (or PEP) is the use of antiretroviral drugs after a single high-risk event, like a needle puncture or unprotected sex. PEP must be started as soon as possible to be effective. One should not wait more than 72 hours after a possible exposure.

There are different medication brands with both PrEP and PEP, with different side effects to each so talk to your health care provider if you may be a candidate.

DeMass offers important reminders that some jobs have daily exposure to bodily fluid contaminants. Also, that relationships come easier and more frequent through dating websites like Tinder and Bumble. Many people, including teens, are sharing stuff, navigating social and sexual freedoms. These are reasons to continue to take HIV and transmittable diseases very seriously.

Get tested, DeMass said. “If you’re a high-risk person, the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends you get an HIV test every year. If you have been a high-risk person only in the past, you should still get a new test each year, because you may be asymptomatic.” DeMass promotes getting a test at least once, even if you’re a low-risk person. Knowing your HIV status is an important part in prevention.

The Utah AIDS Foundation offers free confidential HIV/STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) testing and counseling (UtahAids. org).

Many might think that if one is living a conservative lifestyle, getting an HIV screening is not necessary. DeMass disagreed. “All of us, globally, should get one test in our lifetime. Even if you’re monogamous, never had surgeries, haven’t been to the dentist or never bleed. It’s just one test.” DeMass encourages

people to check out the Ryan White story at ryanwhite.com. Ryan was a 13-year-old boy who contracted HIV through a blood transfusion in the 1980s.

There are modern screenings in place to prevent HIV from being transmitted through blood transfusions today. However, DeMass pointed out, “We live on this planet with a lot of people. There are 38 million people infected with HIV today, and we share space every single day.”

DeMass said one can be exposed even if they haven’t had surgery. One screening in a lifetime is suggested for everyone. He encourages all to ask for a test at least once.

It can be done easily when getting regular blood work taken. Ask your doctor. Anybody can visit AIDSVu.org to find out where to get a free HIV test.

The UNAIDS organization has set an ambitious 90-90-90 treatment target to help end the AIDS epidemic. This goal is to have 90% of the world population know their HIV status. Then, to have 90% of infected individuals receiving sustained antiretroviral therapy. Finally, the goal is to have 90% of people receiving antiretroviral therapy, in viral suppression. More about the 90-90-90 program can be found at UNAIDS.org When it comes to HIV prevention, there’s one more simple thing all people can do: communicate. Talk with loved ones about prevention. Talk about the dangers of needle sharing. Get up to date with safety protocol in the workplace. And maintain strict protective sexual health habits. l

Hikers, bicyclists, equestrians weigh in on the future of Salt Lake County’s trails

T

he Visit Salt Lake website boasts of Salt Lake City’s significant “trailheads in town”—but the only trails referenced are downtown-accessible and reference access to the Wasatch Mountains.

For those of us who live here, trails matter, too—and not just trails accessible from downtown, but trails in our parts of the valley for varied recreation as well as interconnected trails for daily transportation to-and-from work and other interactions.

The city of South Jordan routinely publicizes year-after-year survey results that the No. 1 amenity cited by residents is the city’s robust trails network. City administrators and elected officials repeatedly remind residents of this fact, when matters of development come up—such as paving previously unpaved areas to earn funding to interconnect the trails with other systems throughout the valley, etc.

The Jordan River Parkway is a continuous, non-motorized, paved trail, which follows the Jordan River—what Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson calls “the heart of the county”—for 45-plus miles, weaving in and out of urban areas, parks and marshy areas.

In August, the City Journals published an article about the preponderance of hiking trails in the area.

Trail advocates and environmentalist alike, throughout the valley, now have the opportunity to influence progress on not just existing, well-publicized trail systems, but fledgling, under-developed, unconnected and even undeveloped ones.

DEFINING TRAILS

Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation Planning Director Martin Jensen told the City Journals that Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation Planning Department is working to “get municipalities and interested parties to come together” to help define and divine the area’s future for trails.

In the quest to best understand trails, he said he spent nearly a month studying—by personal enjoyment on a family vacation—

trail systems in Japan, some of which date back to the eighth century.

Trails, he says, do not represent “one source of truth.”

They also, he has found, do not even consistently mean the same thing to different people or stakeholder groups.

Helping define trails syntax, along with developing the future of trails for hikers, bicyclists and equestrians, and other constituents is core to the work his team at the planning department are undertaking now.

AUGUST INPUT

During August, the planning department hosted four open houses to solicit early resident and stakeholder input on updating the regional trails plan.

Constituents from Magna to Midvale, from Holladay to Herriman were courted to provide input on a proposed trails corridor that would enhance a current patchwork network that provides rare and incomplete EastWest connectivity, to a richer, broader, more connected trails network that would reach the edges of the Wasatch foothills to the East and the Oquirrh foothills to the West, and significantly amp trails access for Western constituents.

A big issue of consideration was the matter of to pave or not to pave select trails.

Constituent groups made a strong showing.

THOSE DEEP IN HORSE COUNTRY SPEAK OUT LOUDLY AND PROUDLY

Draper is still a horse community, although ordinances over the past few decades have reined in the larger-scale stables that once helped define the agricultural area now succumbing to development.

The Draper Open House, held at the Dimple Dell Recreation Center, was notable in three ways.

First, the session kicked off all four open houses.

Second, it was well-attended, dwarfing participation at other open houses.

Third, those attending the meeting and

sharing their insights were decidedly horserights oriented and were of the “anti-pave” nature.

The nation’s oldest continuously operating horse organization, the Green Mountain Horse Association, indicates that horses are “the vehicle that thinks” and that “horses are the only means of transport into the wilderness that has a mind of its own.”

As a result, horse owners approach the concept of trail sharing as one requiring thoughtfulness and consideration from both rider and non-rider points of view.

A group of approximately 30 residents—most, if not all of whom represented the area’s horse community and loudly defended the importance of preserving river ecologies (riparian corridors)—attended and vigorously contributed in both written and verbal comments to the plan.

THE CYCLING COMMUNITY – REPRESENTING THOSE WHO RIDE RECREATIONALLY AND FULL TIME

“I’d like to see more unpaved, soft trails,” said Dylan Timmer of Rose Park, who attended the second of four open houses.

Timmer, a cycling aficionado who tends to ride his bike just about everywhere—either in tandem with transit or just solo—notes that it is “a different experience” riding on paved trails versus unpaved trails.

Young families, he observes, benefit in the effort to get children started on mountain biking by having a predominance of softer, unpaved trails, which are easier on newbies likely to experience some falls.

That said, Timmer also indicates that he is a big fan of the storied W&OD Trail—or “Wad” trail, which is short for Northern Virginia’s Washington and Old Dominion Trail.

That trail is an asphalt-surfaced rail trail that runs through densely populated urban and suburban communities as well as through rural areas.

Wad, then, seems akin to Salt Lake County’s Jordan River Parkway.

“There’s a place for both,” he said and

added, “I ride my bike wherever I go.”

Another hardcore cyclist is Kevin Dwyer.

Dwyer, on the board of both the Salt Lake Valley Trails Society and the Salt Lake Bicycle Collective, underscored what he sees as the critical importance of Salt Lake County’s trail visioning update.

“This plan is important—it’s a pathways plan,” he said, observing that the county’s plans for more extensive soft-surface trails, which are also connected with other existing or new trails, would significantly add to the quality of life and limit the need for automobiles in the overall transportation equation.

While horse and hiking enthusiasts are interested in the recreation side, bicycle riders such as Timmer and Dwyer are interested in leveraging the two-wheeled recreation experience they love to the fullest extent possible—and doing so in a safe environment.

Although the Salt Lake Valley Trails Society’s webpage features a mid-air cyclist in a 160-degree position, Dwyer indicates trails can offer—and need to offer—cyclists safe, connected transportation routes throughout the Salt Lake Valley.

Dwyer says he has been hit by automobiles three times while riding his bike. As a result, he says he no longer elects to ride on roads without dedicated pathways.

“Without a plan like this, I am terrified,” he told the City Journals. l

inter is coming. With it comes trapped pollution.

Air pollution in the Salt Lake valley is a problem: an obvious statement. The good news is, it’s become less of a problem than it was in 2010.

In a presentation to the American Planners Association, Thom Carter, UCAIR (Utah Clean Air Partnership) executive director, stated that, “From 2002 to 2017, total emissions have dropped 38% despite the population increasing 34% during that same time period.”

Why is the air better? Because we discovered the primary culprits for pollution.

Us. Fifty-two percent of Utah residents are now aware their own vehicles are the biggest contributor, whereas six years ago 56% thought mines, refineries and other industries were at fault.

Because residents see themselves as responsible, many are making efforts to change their habits.

Taking public transit instead of driving alone is one of the biggest changes people are making.

“With 50% of pollution coming from our tailpipes, not idling, reducing cold starts, taking transit, carpooling are most beneficial to reducing our impact on air quality,” Carter said.

Another major contributor to pollution is old appliances.

“Changing out a traditional water heater

to an ultra-low NOx water heater can make a big difference. Experts at the Department of Environmental Quality tell us that nitrous oxide or NOx is a precursor of PM2.5 (Particulate Matter 2.5 micrometers)…. When a homeowner switches to an ultra-low NOx water heater, it reduces NOx emissions by 75%,” Carter said.

The little things, like turning down the thermosat and replacing old appliances, can help lessen pollution.

There’s even a way to save yourself cash and reduce pollution; turn your furnace down by two degrees.

“Regarding thermostats, we know that people are turning down their thermostats to save money and help air quality…. This 2 degree difference can save 1 ton in CO2. The average family emits 25 tons of CO2 emissions per year,” Carter said.

However, if any of these small efforts stopped, pollution would again skyrocket. l

Hyped over lights

or some reason unbeknownst to me, us Utahans get way too hyped over holiday lights. Perhaps, we really like them because of the creative designs. Or maybe it’s because it’s a cheap or completely priceless way to spend a magical night with friends and family. It might even be a way for many of us to fight the seasonal depression that comes along with the winter darkness. Whatever the reason may be, we love some holiday lights.

If you haven’t checked out these locations yet, I recommend them for a usually-completely-free experience (unless you’re buying some hot chocolate).

My favorite light events over the past few years have been the Trees of Life. While originally named the Tree of Light, many residents have nicknamed the trees “Trees of Life,” for various reasons. One of the most stunning trees grows in Draper City Park (1300 E. 12500 South). Every year, over 65,000 lights are carefully strung throughout the tree. When lit (which occurs the first Monday evening after Thanksgiving) all of the branches of the tree are illuminated; making it seem like a tree from a magical world.

Throughout the valley, many more Trees of Life are being decorated. The closest one to me personally resides in a cemetery. That’s where I would check to see if there’s a Tree of Life near you.

Temple Square arguably has the most famous lights within the valley. Located in

downtown Salt Lake City, Temple Square decorates their 10-acre complex with many different colors and styles of lights. This year, the lights will be on from Nov. 29 until Dec. 31. Check them out from 5 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.

The Grand America Hotel in SLC (555 S. Main St.) is a building to sight-see all year round. When it’s lit up with Christmas lights though, it’s hard not to miss.

City Creek (50 S. Main Street in Salt Lake City) will turn on their lights for the season on Nov. 21. Their event titled “Santa’s Magical Arrival” will kick off at 6 p.m., when the Candy Windows at Macy’s on Main Street are revealed. The Westminster College Dance Program will be performing “Eve” and will be followed by a fire fountain show.

Light the Heights in Cottonwood Heights will occur on Dec. 2, beginning at 5 p.m. A holiday market will be open as City Hall, located at 2277 E. Bengal Blvd., turns on their lights for the first time this season.

Other public spaces that are worth walking through to see the lights are This is the Place Heritage Park (2537 E. Sunnyside Ave., Salt Lake City), Gardner Village (1100 W. 7800 South, West Jordan), and Thanksgiving Points (3003 N. Thanksgiving Way, Lehi).

Beginning on Dec. 6, Hogle Zoo (2600 E. Sunnyside Ave.) will host Zoo Lights! intermittently throughout the season until Jan. 5. This event does require an entrance fee of

$9.95. On Sundays through Thursdays, they will be open from 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, they will be open until 10 p.m.

One other event with an entrance fee that’s worth mentioning is Christmas in Color in South Jordan, at 1161 S. 2200 West.

You’ll need your car for this one as you drive through lighted tunnels and landscapes for at least 30 minutes. Tickets are $27 per vehicle.

Now back to the free-of-charge neighborhood lights.

In Sugar House, Glen Arbor Drive (also unofficially known as “Christmas Street”) is a popular destination for holiday drivers.

While driving, please be courteous of the street’s residents.

In Taylorsville, (another unofficial) Christmas Street has been causing quite a stir. It’s a festive neighborhood where the residents really take to the holiday. Located around 3310 W. Royal Wood Drive, this street is one to cruise down.

The Lights on Sherwood Drive in Kaysville is also a neighborhood gaining popularity. According to their Facebook page, their Christmas light shows are fully controlled and synchronized to a light show. Shows start at 5:30 p.m. and run until 10 p.m. every day of the week.

Son of a Nutcracker

I

t’s the time of year people pretend “The Nutcracker” ballet is a fun holiday activity. If you’re one of the lucky few who never sat through this weird production involving multi-headed vermin, living toys and one unsettling old man, here’s a recap.

Picture a festive house in the late 1800s with dozens of dancing guests, skipping children and happy servants, basically it’s the “12 Days of Christmas” come to life. Young Clara and her obnoxious brother, Fritz, are the ballet version of little kids crazy-excited for Christmas. Dr. Drosselmeyer, Clara’s super-creepy godfather, appears at the party dressed like Count Chocula and presents her with a wooden nutcracker. Clara is over-the-top ecstatic, for reasons I’ll never understand. I guess children had a different relationship with nutcrackers in the 19th century.

Clara’s brother is SO jealous of the gift (right??) that he flings the nutcracker across the room, because really, what else can you do with a nutcracker? Clara’s despondent. She wraps his broken wooden body in a sling (like ya do) and falls asleep on the couch, snuggled to her nutcracker.

During the night, the Rat King and his minions sneak into Clara’s home, because why not? She wakes up and freaks out. The

nutcracker turns into a handsome soldier and wields his sword to defeat the rodent army.

“Nutcracker! You’re my hero!” screams Clara, if people in a ballet could talk.

“That’s Prince Nutcracker to you, peasant,” he sniffs in pantomime, before taking her to the magical Land of the Sweets ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy who has an unclear but definite sexual relationship with Prince Nutcracker.

While in the Land of Sweets, Clara watches dancers from Russia, Spain, China and Arabia (?) as they perform in a culturally stereotypical fashion. Prince Nutcracker sits next to Clara cracking walnuts with his jaw like some football jock.

Mother Ginger shows up in drag with a skirt full of tumbling children, then there’s a flower waltz and dancing pipes and tons more pirouetting before the Sugar Plum Fairy takes the stage to make everyone else look clumsy and insipid. It’s all performed to Tchaikovsky’s musical score that stays in your head through January.

In the end, it turns out it was all a dream, as most stories involving young girls and adventure turn out to be.

I told you that story to tell you this story.

When I was a gangly 11 year old, still full of hope, I auditioned for Ballet West’s “The Nutcracker.” As the audition drew nearer, I practiced every spin and arabesque I’d ever learned. I played the music all day until my

dad walked into my room, removed the album from the turn table and smashed it into pieces with his bare hands.

I showed up at the audition with my hair pulled into a bun so tight it closed my eyes. An elegant dancer performed several steps that we practiced for a few minutes, then we performed for the judges. It was over so quickly.

As dancers were given roles as soldiers, party goers and mice, I held my breath.

But my number wasn’t called. I was heartbroken.

Maybe decades later I’m insulted that the ballet judges couldn’t see my awkward talent. Or maybe I’ve endured enough versions of this tale to see it’s craziness. And if “The Nutcracker” is your family’s favorite holiday tradition, ignore my opinion. It’s all a dream anyway.
