Local Legend: Café Owner Bruce Holt Brings Sugar House Coffee, Community and the Best of Rock ‘N’ Roll

S

ince opening his 50s-themed coffee shop 14 years ago, Bruce Holt has become a beloved icon in the Sugar House community.

He has spent the majority of his life in and around the Sugar House area. He graduated from Highland High School and studied advertising and marketing in college before starting a 20-year career with Harman Music Group in Sandy.

Then, one day, he knew it was time for a change. He was tired of daily traffic and commuting to work, and he wanted to spend more time near his home and the Sugar House area he loved. For years, he had dreamed about opening up a coffee shop, and in 2001 that dream came true. He found a perfect location right on 700 East, painted it bright red, and named it Jitterbug Coffee Hop—a name inspired by a café chain in Las Vegas called “Jitters,” and not, surprisingly, by any particular fondness for 1950s culture and memorabilia.

right in with Holt’s lifelong love of rock music. He got his first guitar as a Christmas present when he was 14 years old. It was a “piece of crap acoustic guitar from LaBelle’s on State Street,” he said, but quality or not, he was hooked.

He taught himself to play chords, hoping his parents would be impressed enough to buy him an electric guitar, but his father wanted no part of his son’s “loud rock and roll music.” Undeterred, 14-yearold Holt took a job at a bakery, scrubbing oven racks and greasing bread pans. “It was mind-numbing work,” Holt said, but he soon saved up enough to buy his first electric guitar and amp.

Music has been part of his life ever since. His first taste of rock stardom came in junior high, when he and his band dressed up as KISS and played in front of a cheering, lighter-waving crowd at a school assembly.

Since then, he has played in many different bands and occasionally plays gigs at local restaurants.

In the café, he fills any lulls by playing one of the several guitars that always sit out on display. His regular customers are used to hearing him play, and occasionally the more musically gifted patrons will join in, playing and singing along to the classics until business picks up again.

When it comes to dedication and determination, no one out-works Holt. Since 2001, he has run his coffee shop almost single-handedly, taking only four days off every year for the 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

His longest vacation in recent memory was in 2013, when he spent two days working at a California NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) tradeshow, followed by two more days in Disneyland.

On his rare days off, Holt heads to the mountains. He likes to hike near Brighton and has especially fond memories of trips to Yellowstone.

When Holt works behind the counter at his coffee shop, he multitasks with ease— chatting with the customers whose names and stories he always remembers while making his signature coffee drinks, smoothies and sandwiches.

For many Sugar House locals, Holt and his business provide a place of community—a place with great coffee, good conversations and a lot of heart. Many of his customers have been coming to Jitterbug for years, but Holt gives even strangers who walk in a chance to feel like friends and family.

As a lifelong member of the Sugar House community, as a father figure and friend to so many people who visit his café, and as a talented musician who is always eager to talk shop about the music industry and strum old favorite songs, Holt is truly a Sugar House local legend. l

Meet-and-Greet Held as Police Program Changes Under New Chief

P

olice in the Community Intelligence Unit made outreach to Sugar House residents two months after the program shifted significantly from the administrations of Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank to Interim Chief Mike Brown.

depended upon the schedule for an officer’s promotion. The assignment depended upon a pecking order, Detective Greg Wilking said.

“You kind of had to burn through all of the people being promoted in order to get through that program very quickly,” Wilking said. “Chief Burbank liked the CIU program as a management training program.”

The job was little more than a stepping stone, being assigned. Now, with a focus on the position requires an application, is supposed to be critical to an officer’s career and, thus, lasts at least two years, Wilking said. Lowe’s circumstance is a “misnomer” because he was in the program as a sergeant-in-training, which came before Brown took over and changed the program, he added.

“I’m really close to the top of the list to be promoted, so there has been some turnover pretty quickly in the past,” Lowe said. “That’s hard for the community and the citizens to get to know, work with and trust an officer, and then you get promoted and you’re gone,” Lowe said.

Wilkins said that someone like him might apply for the CIU position including

Sugar House since he is familiar with the area. The CIU’s seven detectives, each representing a Salt Lake City political district, attend monthly community council meetings.

“If you have a problem in your neighborhood, from graffiti to loud parties, drug dealers to gangs, your CIU officer is ready to connect you with the law enforcement and community resources necessary to address the issue,” according to the department website.

Calling the program “different,” Lowe said it is more positive than the job children imagine when they dream of being police.

“It’s a lot more community involvement and meeting people and getting called to the scene of something,” Lowe said. “I get invited to come to neighborhood parties.

They are excited to have you get involved and people actually like the police.”

Community councils told the Salt Lake City council that they liked the CIU idea, while Chris Burbank was the Salt Lake City police chief. Interim Chief Mike Brown has been impressive in guiding the changes, councilwoman Lisa Adams said. l

More than Just a Review of “Electra”

W

estminster presented “Electra,” a Greek play originally created by Sophocles, and now directed by Larry West on Sept. 4-5 and 11-12.

The production toured throughout Utah from Sept. 4-27. Locations included the Amphitheater in West Valley, BYU’s de Jong Concert Hall, Weber State University at the Wildcat Theater and the Red Butte Garden Amphitheater.

“It’s so wonderful to work with students of such a broad interest,” West said.

“They’re talented in all areas with a passion for theater.”

Sophocles’ play centers around Electra and her pursuit for justice over her father’s death. Electra is set on stage over 90 percent of the time, making the personality of the actress playing the character highly important.

Played by Melanie Nelson, her acting created the atmosphere of the play. Electra is a passionate heroine for her father and his death. To her, he had been killed unjustly by a mother who believed she had done no wrong. The father, according to the mother, had sacrificed her daughter, and this was enough to kill him.

“I’ve always liked Melanie Nelson’s work,” Sterling Price, a Utah resident, said.

By Elizabeth Suggs “She’s always on TV.” The current “Electra,” West explained, was his seventh attempt at directing for the Classic Greek Festival, his first being 30 years ago. West has both written and directed shows, but those he has written were very different from those he has directed.

“I never direct what I write,” West said. “Directing is really conceptual. It’s not really hands-on when I write.”

West has only directed Greek plays.

All non-Greek plays he has been involved with were written by him, but he was not the director.

West held true to most of the original Greek plot but added modern devices, such as cell phones and attire. Most of the attire in the play was traditional garb, aside from two side characters who wore a skirt and a dress.

When both characters appeared, dressed in conflicting fashions, it took one out of the play and into confusion, with a murmur breaking out in the audience. The actors played the characters so well and relaxed that, when played on stage, it seemed to be a mistake.

The modern tone to an ancient story isn’t unlike Westminster. Many of Westminster’s plays incorporate modern devices.

However, for West, using modern devices is uncommon. According to West, the devices used in the play are dependent on the situation.

“I’m a storyteller,” West said. “Anything tells a story.”

To better ensure understanding of the story, a dramaturage by Jim Svendsen was

played 30 minutes prior to every show. A dramaturage is a way for the audience to better understand the play. Svendsen was the literary editor for those involved in the company, as well as the one who edited the texts.

“For a play like this, [a dramaturge] is a good idea,” Price said. “Greek dramas can be difficult to understand.” l

Page 6 | October 2015 Proposition 1 will be on the November ballot to allow voters an opportunity to accept or reject a proposed 0.25 percent sales tax increase. The funding raised for transportation, should the proposition pass, would be split with 40 percent going to local cities, 40 percent to UTA and 20 percent to the county.

oliticians will have their hands out again as residents return to the polls this November. Proposition 1 on this year’s ballot asks a simple question: Are you willing to pay more taxes? However the facts about this question seem to be less simple.

On face value the proposed tax increase associated with Proposition 1 would raise funds to be used for transportation expenses. Residents in most cities have sincere concerns about the condition of their roads and the costs associated with building, repairing and maintaining them.

To those concerned motorists, this tax increase may look acceptable. After scratching the surface and looking past the face value, voters will see that only 40 percent of the funds will be allocated to the local city, 40 percent of the funds will be given to UTA, and 20 percent of the funds will be given to the specific county where the proposition passes.

Voters will not have the option to accept the local portion of the proposed tax, without accepting the UTA portion of the tax as well as the county portion of the tax. This means for every 10 million dollars the city receives to spend on roads, the residents of the city have to pay $25 million in additional sales tax.

“I think it’s much more appropriate for each entity to make a case separately for why they need a tax increase and what they are going to do with the money,” West Jordan Councilman Ben Southworth said.

Voters may be in favor of fixing local roads, but not in providing funds to UTA or the county – or vice versa – according to Southworth, who also believes that each entity and lobbyists recognized it’s easier to make a case to pass a tax increase when everything is lumped together.

“The entities may have very legitimate needs, but don’t hold one hostage to another,” Southworth said. “I don’t support the initiative at all and will be voting against it. That’s not an indictment on any of the entities; it’s an indictment on the process.”

Over a dozen counties have decided to put the proposition on the ballot, and nearly all the city officials in Salt Lake County have shown support for the proposition in one way or another. However, Proposition 1 on the November ballot will give voters the opportunity to choose to support or not support the sales tax increase geared towards providing more funding for transportation, including UTA. The proposed 0.25 percent tax increase

Higher Taxes on Ballot - How Will You Vote?

By Rachel Hall was approved to be placed on the ballot after the state legislature passed HB362 that allowed for the proposition to be voted on – this same bill also approved a 5 cent per gallon gas tax to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2016.

If the average family uses 20 gallons of gas per week, the increased cost of fuel next year will take an additional $52 per year out of their budget. Consumers should also prepare for this tax to increase other products; it would make sense that if Smith’s trucks are paying more at the pump, then consumers will be paying more for their groceries. This increase to the gas tax is already approved and will take

counties to take care of local roads. Forty percent is going to UTA, but those [funds] are also going to specifically be going to the bus service in our communities,” Cullimore said.

However, there is nothing in the bill that would require the UTA to spend the funds in the local city or county.

“We’ve been falling behind for years.

Once you fall behind, you can almost never catch up,” Sandy City Mayor Dolan said.

“The growth is going to happen. Without this revenue stream, it will become more difficult [to complete projects]. The federal funds have dried up. We can’t expect to see much coming

effect no matter the outcome of Proposition 1.

Proposition 1 affects the county as a whole, so we reached out to some politicians throughout the county. When the Journals asked Cottonwood Heights Mayor Cullimore about the impact the proposition would have on residents in his city, he said, “We are thrilled that we are getting 40 percent. It was a negotiated split.

This is how politics is done – it’s compromise.

What matters is we came to a compromise that everyone agreed upon.”

The split funding would result in families having to pay $2.50 for every $1 of city revenue received.

“I think there are some people concerned about UTA getting some of the funds. Sixty percent of the funds are going to cities and

out of Washington.”

Press conferences have been held around the valley to inform voters of the specifics of Proposition 1, but elected officials are only allowed to give a personal opinion on the measure as an individual and not acting as a representative of the public. UTA is also required to offer education to the public and not push for approving or denying the tax increase.

“It’s really not our job to advocate for or against the tax increase. What we do, and what we have been doing, is listening to local elected leaders and civic leaders as they ask questions about how money can be spent to improve transit services in their communities,” UTA Spokesman Remi Barron said. “It’s up to them to tell us what they’re looking for. We try to

provide the service after they tell us the kinds of service that they need.”

“We get funding from different sources.

We currently do get money through the sales tax. This [proposition] is just an increase. We also get federal funding though federal grants and then some state funding through programs the state has. We also get fare box revenue,” Barron said. “The yearly budget varies from year to year based off of the amount of sales tax collected.”

The needs of each community are unique, and that is why not every mayor has personally spoken up in favor of the tax increase.

South Jordan Mayor Alvord will personally be voting against the measure because of the “UTA component” and the “one-sizefits all nature.”

“This is a pedal to the medal spending approach for transportation. In other words, every city has to spend more on their transportation spending regardless of their history of spending,” Alvord told the City Journals. “The problem with that is that if there are cities in the county that have had adequate transportation spending; they cannot reduce their spending with this new revenue. They have to find creative places to put the money.”

South Jordan has implemented priority based budgeting, which requires all of the initiatives and all of the programs of the city to be ranked according to priority. City staff and the city council both rank projects to set the priority.

“That’s the way we would anticipate funding roads in the future. If we need to place a higher priority on maintenance, for example, we could simply give that a higher score and fund maintenance,” Alvord said. “We would have to live within a budget more carefully [if Proposition 1 does not pass].”

“Until the streets are paved in gold, we could always spend more. I don’t say that to sound flippant; literally, in Washington, D.C. for example, they had granite on their curbing,” Alvord said. “I’m trying to illustrate the point without this money, South Jordan would have to look at our priorities and decide if we wanted to allocate more money to our roads.”

Holladay Mayor Dahle, on the other hand, will individually vote in favor of the tax increase.

He feels appropriately funding the needs of the community is the responsible thing to do, and

will save money down the road.

“It comes down to being a responsible steward of your assets. It’s irresponsible to let them continue to go downhill when you can maintain them for pennies on the dollar,” Dahle said. “This is a really, really important issue. The citizens can decide if it’s something they think is worth funding.”

Advocacy groups, such as the Utah Taxpayers Association, spoke up suggesting that the potential tax increase should have been placed on next year’s ballot when more voters are likely to offer their opinion during the presidential election.

“I think taxpayers have a lot to think about. As a family, can you afford the increase?” Utah Taxpayers Association Vice-President Hesterman said. “We have to understand there is a need – this is one way to fill the need.”

Americans for Prosperity State Director Evelyn Everton released a statement expressing regret that the potential

sales tax has landed on the November ballot.

“We are disappointed to hear that county commissions would even consider allowing a sales tax hike to move forward.

As responsible legislators, county officials should be working to protect their constituents from harmful legislation like the ‘local sales tax option.’ If approved, the new tax would increase the price of nearly everything that families need,” Everton wrote.

The sales tax rate would increase to 7.1 percent if approved, compared to the current 6.85 percent in most Salt Lake County areas – equivalent to one cent more for every $4 spent.

“Even worse? Almost half the funding would go to the wasteful Utah Transit Authority — where it’s common practice to use taxpayer dollars to award massive executive bonuses. Utahns are already adjusting their budgets for the new gas and property tax hikes. Allowing a vote on

a bill to hike the sales tax, just wouldn’t be fair,” Everton wrote.

Everton’s remarks obviously illustrate the alleged mismanagement of the UTA in the past. Where administration has been blamed for high spending, low rider base, and gross amount of money being spent on executive bonuses.

The proposition is about more than what it would cost voters now if passed, but what it could cost voters in the future if it does not pass.

“If we don’t receive the additional revenue – projects will have to wait,” Eyre said. “It costs about one dollar to repair a road and it costs about ten dollars to replace it.”

“There’s a baseline of what you have to spend to maintain transportation,” Dahle said. “It does stop the bleeding from what we have to pull [from the general fund] to maintain the roads [if Proposition 1 passes].

Some politicians have argued that citizens should accept this tax because it is a good compromise; it raises the money that is needed for the roads. It will allow the cities to maintain the roads at a lower cost than replacing them in the future.

When the City Journals reached out to residents, many thought that it sounded like politicians were handcuffing the maintenance of roads to the executive bonuses of the UTA. Many city residents were disgusted to find out that they were not given the option to raise funds for the roads without being forced to raise money for UTA. Many residents showed faith in their local politicians and city staff, but doubted the financial feasibility and management of the UTA. l

How To Meet Over Meetup

F

iddler’s Elbow played host to a Meetup group for like-minded skeptics on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Meetup is the world’s largest network of groups, with over 212,000 groups in 180 different countries. The groups differ on the individual’s needs, with many groups similar to another.

The skeptics group asks what it means to be skeptic and how skeptical can they be when concerned with conversation?

“We define skepticism as an evidence-based approach to claims. Responsible skeptics accept or reject claims on the basis of evidence, and remain open to reconsideration should new evidence emerge,” according to Skeptics page on the Meetup website.

“We’re here every second Tuesday of the month,” President Michael Shermer said. “But we’re usually out on the patio.”

Skylar Walker, Sugar House resident, was asked to attend a skeptic group Meetup at a friend’s request. Prior to the invitation, Walker wasn’t aware of the Meetup site.

“To have to sit around and talk about being skeptic is self-congratulatory,” Walker said. “I have no interest in that. The painting group looked more fun.”

He thought it highly unlikely he’d join another Skeptics Meetup, but would consider a different group in a different situation.

“What are they gonna tell me?” Walker said. “Are they going to talk about what’s wrong with religion? With government?

Skeptics have a wide net.”

For skeptics, Walker thought it best to be part of online chat groups, or different Tedtalks. The pressure being in a situation based around conversation, according to

Walker, made the conversation “artificial.”

“Board games and yoga makes sense.

That’s an activity,” Walker said. “Whatever conversation happens is organic. Not the focus.”

However, Walker admitted those part of the skeptics group were likable.

“The group was nice,” Walker said. “I don’t think I would object to knowing any of them.”

Meetup activities include dancing, yoga, board games and much more. Every weekend board game Meetups happen somewhere in Salt Lake. While some have distinct locations, others change depending on the ease and access of the group members. Some game examples include Settlers of Catan, Seven Wonders and Small World.

“I’ve met quite a few friends through Meetup,” Kevin Michaelis, a previous Utah resident, said. “It gives people a comfortable way to get to know each other, doing something they enjoy.”

Before moving from Utah, Michaelis

hosted a larger board game Meetup group.

When played at his house, multiple tables and games were used. Those who participated often had their own sets of games, despite the readily available ones already offered.

“I use it because board gamers organize events through it,” Kory West, avid board gamer, said. “The board gamers are a pretty niche group. More mainstream groups are now using Meetup as an event planning tool.”

Like many other groups online, Meetup offers multiple board gaming groups.

“After being in Meetup for seven years,” West said, “I can tell you that I have made many close friends.”

Like West, Thomas Morello, another Meetup member, met many of his like-minded friends through Meetup’s website.

“The Meetups are fun,” Morello said.

“When I moved to Salt Lake I knew I could find people with similar interests if I went to a Meetup group.” l

The Second Commemoration Since the Death of Joe Hill

T

he commemoration of the execution of Joe Hill, whom many believe to be wrongly convicted, was marked on Sept. 5.

“Joe Hill has been known as a labor songwriter. He was known before he died,” Dr. Lori Taylor, wrangler and co-chair of the Joe Hill Organizing Committee, said. “He would have already been well-known even if he hadn’t died.”

In an effort to destabilize the Wobblies, growing public opinion believes, Joe Hill was suspected and convicted of murder.

While the evidence may be strong that Joe Hill was innocent, there is not yet sufficient evidence to say whether he was or was not guilty.

According to the AFL-CIO, Joe Hill was well known as an Industrial Worker of the World (IWW) or part of the “Wobblies,” as well as a folksinger of popular labor songs. His songs were played in hobo jungles, workers’ rallies and on picket lines.

Months before his arrival in Salt Lake City, a rally broke out in Utah. Hill’s songs were played in what became known as a riot started by the Wobblies.

“He’d been heading to Chicago and stopped in Utah,” Taylor said. “He went into a situation already volatile.”

What happened to the Wobblies was printed in the paper as the riot, according to Taylor. Hill arrived in a city that was already anti-Wobblie.

By Elizabeth Suggs in a double murder. The best friend had shot Hill after he hoped to date the friend’s ex-fiancé. The murder happened the same night Hill was treated for his gunshot wound, which made him a prime suspect.

“The friend was a hot head,” Taylor said. “He shot Joe and immediately was sorry.”

Taylor explained that Murray was the centerfold of Swedish immigrants. Hill never presented his alibi at trial, but those in the Swedish community, according to Taylor, “knew it was true.”

“One important thing to look at is two innocent people were murdered,” Taylor said. “I don’t believe Joe Hill did it.”

Hill was killed by a firing squad at the old state prison where Sugar House Park presently stands. Due to the nature of the history, Taylor and committee wanted the commemoration to be held at Sugar House Park.

“He was executed at the old state prison,” Taylor said. “We did it in the neighborhood because that’s where he died.”

The Joe Hill celebration marked the second commemoration since his execution nearly a 100 years ago. Hill, unlike other martyrs, was remembered not only for the unjust, but for his songs.

“Joe Hill has been known as a labor songwriter,” Taylor said. “It’s the songs that set him apart.”

“It was Labor Day weekend,” Taylor said. “And this weekend was more of a celebration. The vigil will be somber.”

Sean Desilets, professor at Westminster, was one of the many that attended the Labor Day event.

“There’s a long and beautiful tradition of resisting corporate power in America,” Desilets said. “Joe Hill (along with the activism that sprung up before and after his death) is an important part of that tradition.

It is important to remember and celebrate our heroes.”

The event went from noon to 10 p.m., with the last performance by Judy Collins ending at 9 p.m.

“I wished I could have stayed longer,” Desilets said. “But really the important thing, for me, was being there.”

While it rained on the event earlier in the day, many still attended and continued to enjoy the music. As the day wore on, rain dissipated and sun covered the grounds.

Most of those who attended remained seated and quiet, as they listened to music played by Mark Ross, David Rovics, Judy Collins and many others. Each performer was given 45 minutes without any planned lengthy stop.

Taylor Hoffman, Sugar House resident, attended the event near the end. Hoffman had no idea she missed the Mischief Brew, a favorite of hers.

Judy Collins, however, brightened the mood.

“I didn’t know anything prior,” Hoffman said. “I did know who it was about, but had no clue it was the anniversary or that

there was an event.”

Lack of advertising wasn’t what made her unaware, Hoffman explained.

“It was my fault,” Hoffman said.

“Someone was bound to say something at Black Cat Comics[her work]. I just go into my own insulated place.”

In response to what she missed, Hoffman purchased items from the Joe Hill store just outside the park. The store sold Joe Hill memorabilia and books, as well as CDs and records of performing bands.

Near the store, Chloe Stewart, a sophomore and Sugar House resident, stood beside her history project. She, along with Yasmin Projansky and Haley Segura, partnered together to create a project on one of the leaders in history.

“Why do any of the normal history leaders?” Stewart, the only one in attendance, asked. “We heard of his story and got really interested.”

The project on Joe Hill won the National History Day prize, and later the group visited Washington, D.C. for the project.

“This was my first,” Stewart said. “My partners have done science projects.”

The two descendants of Joe Hill and John Morrison, whom Hill was convicted of killing, attended the event. Both Rolf Hägglund and Marilyn Morrison-Ryan greeted each other warmly. According to Taylor, the friendly mix between the two descendants “really set the tone” for the event.

“It doesn’t have to be a point of contention,” Taylor said. “We can live in the present. Whether he’s guilty or not, the time of that question has passed.” l

Envoy Air Partners with Westminster College’s Flight School

olleges and universities throughout the country have affiliated with Envoy Air under American Airlines, and Westminster College’s flight school announced a partnership with Envoy Air through the Envoy Pipeline Program.

“It is a fantastic arrangement,” John Schaefer, chair of the Aviation Studies Division, said. “Flight training is expensive, and this program provides financial incentives as well as medical and dental benefits to our students who participate.”

The pipeline program will give qualified Westminster College aviation students the opportunity for conditional employment with American Airlines. Students will interview for a job while they are in the program, and after the completion of the program and graduation from school, the students will start working for Envoy Air with American Airlines. Students will also be able to use American Airlines and its affiliates for travel benefits and full-time benefits, including medical, dental and 401K benefits while in the program.

For students to qualify for the pipeline program, they must have sophomore standing and retain a 2.5 cumulative GPA, a 3.0 cumulative GPA in the aviation program, and have their private pilot’s license and instrument rating.

“As an added incentive, Envoy is offering a $10,000 scholarship upon joining our airline as a first officer,” Envoy Air’s website said. In order for the students to qualify for the scholarship, they must “complete a bachelor’s degree in an aviation major with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA in aviation courses” and “complete flight certificates at Pipeline School: instrument, commercial and multi-engine.”

“This arrangement is mutually beneficial. They get the supply of pilots they need.

Our graduates get guaranteed employment,” Schaefer said.

Envoy Air was previously known as American Eagle and is a regional airline that flies to North American countries, based out of Irving, Texas. l

Westminster College Poetry Series

estminster College will host a fourpart poetry series throughout the upcoming school year starting on Thursday, Sept. 17.

The series is called the Anne Newman Sutton Weeks Poetry Series. Each reading will begin at 7 p.m. and will be located on Westminster College’s campus. Following the reading, there will be a book signing and reception with food; everyone is invited to join and talk to that evening’s poets.

The Weeks Poetry Series is sponsored by the Zoo, Arts, and Parks program of Salt Lake County, which helps to keep the readings free.

The series also hosts two other events:

the Utah Humanities Book Festival located at the Salt Lake City Library on Saturday, Oct. 17, and a free poetry workshop for students and community members, led by Brandon Som. The series is directed by Natasha Sajé.

Sajé is an English professor at Westminster College and is the adviser for Ellipsis, the college’s literary magazine. This year’s issue of Ellipsis will debut at the final poetry reading of the 2015/16 poetry series.

As a fellow poet, Sajé understands the importance of creating the perfect pair “When I pair poets at each event, I look for some resonance and some consonance between the poets,” Sajé said.

The series’ first reading started with award-winning poets Ruth Ellen Kocher and Ashley Seitz Kramer. Kramer lives in Salt Lake City and is an assistant dean at Westminster College and a doctoral student in education, culture and society at the University of Utah. Kocher is a professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo.

Westminster College Holds Annual Title IX Symposium

estminster College hosted its second annual Title IX Symposium – Not Alone – on Sept. 17 - 18. Title IX is a federal law that prohibits any act of discrimination based off of sex. The symposium focused on rape, sexual assault and dating violence discrimination on college campuses.

The symposium is designed for students, college faculty and staff members and the community. Participants came from Westminster College as well as from other schools in the state. The Symposium is designed to appeal to two different audiences: college staff and faculty and students.

By McCall Mash A total of six colleges, including Westminster College participated, and nine organizations helped to sponsor the event. Staff and faculty members learned how to conduct a good investigation and how to ask the right questions without reinforcing trauma.

Students learned about how they are protected by their school and the law, what to expect after reporting an incident and what they can demand from their school.

“We try to have a pronounced and vocal outline of rights,” Melissa Flores, the director of the symposium, said. “We don’t want anyone to be confused.”

The symposium consisted of three main features. The first feature was two keynote speakers: Michael Munson who spoke on the topic of “Complex Communities, Simple Solutions: Making a Difference for Transgender Sexual Violence Survivors” and Liz Seccuro who spoke on “What Everyone Needs to Know: How the Internet & ‘Bro’ Culture Have Impacted Campus Violence & Sexual Assault.”

The second feature was multiple breakout sessions on a variety of topics that addressed Title IX issues. Symposium attendees had as many as four options per breakout session. The last feature of the symposium was the screening of the 'Hunting Ground' on Friday night; a documentary that investigated how many college students “who have been raped on campus face retaliation and harassment as they fight for justice.” The film was open for all members of the community to attend, not just those who were participating in the symposium.

“We take [Title IX] very seriously.

We want to make sure that everyone stays safe. The Symposium is one way that we are trying to shed light on this issue and make

sure everyone knows their rights,” Jason Schwartz-Johnson, the Title IX coordinator at Westminster College, said.

The idea of a symposium was created months after the Clery Act was amended on Oct. 20, 2014. The amendment gave more rights to the survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking in collegiate situations.

In the past two years since the Clery Act was amended, colleges across the country have seen major changes in how Title IX has been addressed. Along with the symposium, Westminster College requires all students to undergo a Title IX comprehension course and professors are expected to actively talk to students about the law which is outlined in very course syllabus.

“It’s happening all over the country; all campuses under law are required to do this,” Schwartz-Johnson said.

The symposium, along with the amendments to the Clery Act, are trying to change how Title IX violations are dealt with on college campuses and to hopefully bring down the occurrences of Title IX violations. l

Salt Lake City Council News Briefs Set Up a Neighborhood Watch Program on Your Block Neighborhood Watch is one of the most effective and least expensive ways to prevent crime and reduce fear. It fights the isolation that crime both creates and feeds upon. It forges bonds among area residents; helps reduce burglaries, robberies and car prowls; and improves relations between law enforcement and the community.

Any community resident can join and learn how to make their homes more secure, watch out for each other and the neighborhood, and report activities that raise their suspicions. You may form a Neighborhood Watch group around any geographical unit: a block, apartment complex or business area.

S-Line service has been extended to offer the same daily hours of service as TRAX. For the first two and half years of operation, S-Line service has started later and ended earlier than TRAX service due to a limited budget.

Vote by Mail Primary Voting The City’s first vote by mail balloting improved turnout for the primary when compared to recent elections. The City Recorder reports that more than 40 percent of registered voters either sent in, dropped off, or voted in person for the Aug. 11 primary in Salt Lake City. That’s double the turnout from the Mayoral primary in 2011. Ballots for the General Election will be mailed 28 days prior to the Tuesday, November 3 election date.

Governor, Utah Legislature Approve SLC Site for New Prison The Governor and the Utah legislature have approved a recommendation that a new, 4000-bed prison be built west of the Salt Lake Airport off of 7200 West. Both the City Council and the Mayor objected to the recommendation and will continue to explore options to fight the move from Draper.

The Salt Lake City Council delivered a letter to the Governor before the legislative vote on Aug. 19 opposing the recommendation.

Hogle Zoo Rendezvous Brings in Over $45,000 for Animal Care and Zoo Improvements

By Jessica Bowen “The Wildest Party in Town” lived up to its name for the 18th year in a row. On the evening of Sept. 10, roughly 1,700 people gathered at the Hogle Zoo for the 18th annual Zoo Rendezvous. This event is the Zoo’s biggest, most elaborate fundraising celebration of the entire year, and the people in attendance were treated to an exotic adventure involving live music, fine dining catered by local restaurants and special closeup encounters with some of the Zoo’s most impressive animals.

Every year, this fundraising event

brings in money that is essential for animal care, zoo maintenance and exhibit expansion or improvements. And, according to Hogle Zoo’s community relations director, Erica Hansen, “100 percent of the proceeds stay in the zoo.”

This year, the silent auction brought in over $45,000, an impressive total that tops last year’s by $13,000. This increase, due in large part to a new mobile bidding system, holds great promise for the next year of new projects and upkeep at the Hogle Zoo. Several of the Zoo’s most beloved

animals made special appearances for the partygoers. Rizzo the polar bear swam and dived for treats, the elephants had a special performance and renowned falconer Steve Chindgren wowed the crowd with his eagle flight show.

Many local artists and businesses added special Sugar House flair to the evening as well. There were live music performances from The Steel Belts and The STR!KE, as well as aerial feats performed by Voodoo Productions and a dancing and drumming routine by the Africa Heartwood Project.

The cuisine for the evening was provided by over 30 of the area’s most popular restaurants, including The Egg & I, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, Ruth’s Chris and Corner Bakery. Guests also had the opportunity to stop by for psychic readings with Marja Shelley Mystics or to take a ride on the Zoo’s Conservation Carousel.

Conservation was a key theme of this year’s Rendezvous. Hogle Zoo has long been a “green” organization, but this year they went above and beyond to try to reduce

the amount of waste from the event. For the first time, they deployed a team dubbed the “Green Brigade” during the event to make sure that all of the waste from the evening was thrown away or recycled properly. The Green Brigade was made up entirely of zoo staff and volunteers, all of whom believe in the Zoo’s mission to reduce waste, recycle and protect the environment, and the inaugural team was a great success.

While representatives from the Hogle Zoo could not provide details about specific projects or exhibits for which the Rendezvous money was earmarked, this year promises to be especially exciting. Animal lovers can always stop by to enjoy the Zoo’s daily events, including animal training and feedings, as well as special programs, such as Wolf Awareness Day, coming up on Oct. 10.

Also, Sugar House locals who want to show their support for Hogle Zoo and its mission of conservation can keep an eye out for details about next year’s Zoo Rendezl vous—it’s sure to be just as wild!

“CDBG and other federal grant programs provide support for a wide variety of projects, from public services, to housing rehabilitation, bike lanes, and new parks,” Community Development Programs Administrator Tammy Hunsaker said. “This valuable source of funding is a way for communities to collaborate on projects that promote widespread community revitalization.”

Interested parties are invited to submit applications for activities that support local and national program requirements. The city also invited folks to visit the HAND website for more information, including an application resource guide.

tried the other Vietnamese favorite, pho, you really should, if for no other reason than to say you have.

The menu at Pho Thin is extensive. I had a difficult time deciding what to try my first time there. I asked for the three most popular items on the menu, and I was not

disappointed at the selections that arrived at my table.

First up was the Hanoi, crispy pork spring rolls ($8). They are cut a little larger than bite size and are served with a sweet and sour chili sauce that is very thin. I have been craving those crispy rolls ever since.

Next up: pho. Pho, is a rice noodle soup served with beef. The broth is light, and theirs is an old family recipe. The rice noodles are soft and then they add whatever your choice of beef is. You can choose from rare round eye, beef brisket, beef meatball or filet mignon.

I had pho with beef brisket ($8) and added a small squeeze of sriracha. It is served with a side plate of fresh bean sprouts and basil leaves, which I passed on, but I did add some bean sprouts for crunch.

Last but not least, the chicken and hoisin sauce banh mi sandwich ($9). I absolutely love hoisin sauce on just about anything, so this was a no-brainer for me. It was excellent. The chicken was tender, the carrot sticks and cucumber slices were fresh and crisp and the bread had the perfect amount of firmness and crustiness. The sandwich is

served with sweet potato fritters, which are basically battered sweet potato fries with a housemade fry sauce.

The restaurant has bright colors with subtle lighting, making it very comfortable.

There are tables and booths, but also a nice bar area for people eating alone. I would suggest going early: I hear they pack them in at the lunch hour.

Is Frugal the New Sexy?

By Joani Taylor Several money-saving blogs I’m familiar with are pushing frugal as the “new sexy,” going so far as to admit that finding a bargain is a high and deals must be purchased now, without thought, or will never be available again.

While I’m personally excited to see more people striving to achieve a secure financial future, my hope is that, like all extremes, these deal-finding bloggers aren’t missing the mark and actually creating unnecessary, and even impulsive, spending habits. Living and saving money takes practice, time and most of all com-

mitment, and can’t be achieved in a day. It takes work, is time consuming and often requires long-term sacrifice.

With that being said, putting a few simple techniques into play could save you hundreds and even thousands of dollars yearly. Here are a couple of un-extreme ideas to help get you started on your frugal journey.

Cut back on eating out: An article on Fox News reports that Americans are actually spending more on eating out than they are at the grocery store. What’s even more interesting, the article sites that younger generations are more apt to habitually eat out than their baby boomer parents, stating that they use eating out as a time to socialize and connect.

This left me scratching my head, as it’s rare I see this generation eating out without looking at their phones for at least half of the meal. #socialconnecting Hashtags and sarcasm aside, considering

that the average price of a single meal at a “nothing exciting” restaurant comes in at around $12, and the price of dinner for two at a midrange restaurant is as much as $45, forgoing eating out a couple of times could easily cover an entire weeks’ worth of groceries for a family of two or three, or even four if you are a frugal shopper.

Throw in packing a lunch to work in lieu of your burger and fries and you’ll save another $3-$5 a day. That could add up to $1,700 a year, not to mention the additional health benefits.

Wait to buy: Wait at least 48 hours before deciding to buy anything over a certain price point: mine is $50. During that time, ask yourself some questions: Do I need this right now? The keyword is now. If the answer is no, start watching for a better price, and challenge yourself to find one.

Chances are, when you do, you’ll wonder why you wanted the item in the first place.

How will you pay for it? Are you going to give up something to have it? Do you have space for it? Is the item going to create debt? If you’re going into debt for an item, you could end up paying double or more for it. Is it worth that?

Once the 48-hour waiting period is over, you may find that the object desired really isn’t worth the price, or you may have forgotten

about it altogether.

As I write this, I had two free advanced screening passes for the new Johnny Depp movie, “Black Mass,” secured in less than 5 minutes. You’ll also want to check out the Utah Film Center (utahfilmcenter.org). They show free weekly independent film screenings and even have their Tumbleweeds program that’s geared for kids.

Junk in the Trunk

runks are super useful. If you’re an elephant, they’re a necessity. If you want to change a tire, hide Christmas gifts or transport a body, trunks are invaluable. But I don’t understand the connection between trunks and Halloween. Why is trunk-or-treating a thing?

In the U.S., trick-or-treating started after WWII when children went door to door begging for food on Thanksgiving (not joking). Then they continued begging through Christmas, New Years, Valentine’s Day, Easter, and so on, so I guess someone decided to create a national begging celebration on Halloween.

This mass candy solicitation certainly worked for me for many years. Part of the thrill of trick-or-treating was leaving the familiar neighborhoods, searching for the families handing out full-size Butterfingers. We’d come home with pillowcases full of candy, after walking miles and miles through Murray.

Now, in our heavily-sanitized society, parents want to make sure their kids won’t be handed anything with sugar or gluten, or have to interact with neighbors they’ve never met—so trunk-or-treating was introduced.

I know some churches feel trunk-ortreating (Halloween tailgating) is a way to

watch over kids while keeping demonic costumes to a minimum. In fact, kids are often encouraged to dress as Bible characters.

(Side note: If I was forced to dress as a woman from the Bible, I’d be Jael and I’d carry Sisera’s head with a nail shoved through his temple. But that’s just me. The Book of Revelations also has some pretty messed-up oddities. My daughters could easily have passed for the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse on any given day.)

Anyway. Part of growing up is being terrified all the time. Kids have so little control over their lives and, unfortunately, they learn early on that life can be scary and un-

predictable.

As kids on Halloween, we got super scared, but we also knew that, deep down, we truly were safe. Visiting haunted houses made us feel brave. In our minds, going from house to house, asking strangers for candy, was akin to walking down a dark alley in New York City.

There was always one house on the block you were afraid to visit because it had strobe lights, shrieking screams, ghoulish laughter when you rang the bell and an unidentifiable zombie handing out treats with his bloody hands.

neighborhood witch resided. Lights turned off. No jack o’ lantern. You knew she was sitting in the dark, staring out her window, ready to cast spells on children who came to her door.

Additionally, my mom had me paranoid about eating any unwrapped candy, convinced my friend’s mom had dipped the open jawbreaker in bleach several times before handing it to me.

But really? How many people did you know that found a razor blade in their apple or received temporary tattoos laced with acid?

On Nov. 1, when we woke up with piles of candy, stomachaches and Halloween makeup smeared on our pillows, we also felt we had survived something frightening— and imagined ourselves a little bit braver as we faced our lives.

But trunk-or-treating is not remotely scary, unless your trunk is part of a 1950s Cadillac hearse, complete with creaky coffin and a driver named Lurch. Maybe instead of meeting in church parking lots, we can stay in our homes and hand out candy as kids go door-to-door. I think that idea might just catch on. l
