Sugar House 2015 in Review District Seven Residents, As another year comes to a close, let’s take a moment to consider some of the accomplishments in District Seven during 2015.

With thanks to the Sugar House Community Council for its recommendations, the City Transportation Division has added or will be adding key crosswalks at the following locations: • crossing McClelland Street at the intersection with Sugarmont Drive • crossing McClelland Street at the intersection with Elm Avenue • crossing both streets at the 900 East and Elm Avenue intersection In addition to these, installation of a new HAWK pedestrian crossing signal at the intersection of McClelland Street and 2100 South is scheduled for next summer.

Thanks to Amy Barry, Sugar House Community Council chair, who spearheaded a Capital Improvement Project request that resulted in the city council funding an improved and redesigned pond in Fairmont Park. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring and be completed during the summer.

The council voted to provide matching funds for the Sego Lily in Sugar House Park just east of 1300 East, on The Draw. The Sego Lily will be the first flood control system in the world designed as a work of art. It will function as both a dam and spillway for intermittent flood waters that occur in Sugar House Park, and help prevent damage to homes and businesses in the area.

Designed by world-renowned artist Patricia Johanson, the Sego Lily will work together with the recently completed “Canyon” pedestrian walkway/bicycle path under 1300 East to help divert potential flood waters.

Police bike patrols are returning to Sugar House. In the coming months as officers are hired and trained, you will notice an increased police bike patrol presence in the Sugar House Business District and parks on the east side of Salt Lake City.

The first draft of a Small Neighborhood Plan for 21st and 21st is complete and ready to be presented to the city council. Work continues on the Parley’s Way Corridor Master Plan. This plan will provide a vision and direction for the corridor as future development opportunities arise.

This is an exciting time for District Seven. I will continue to work with my council colleagues and the city administration to help make our neighborhoods great places to live, work, dine, shop and play.

Sugar House Community Council Update 2015 was a year where Sugar House finally saw some of the construction come to an end. The fence around monument plaza came down as the city finished construction of our very first pedestrian plaza. People started using our public space, and businesses have started to fill in the heart of the business district.

We continue to see great events come to our area with Monday night food truck rally, Friday night Sugar House Farmers Market, free concerts in Hidden Hollow and an amazing Sugar House Art Walk that continue to make our community so lively.

On a different note, residents also began and will end the year struggling with some major development projects/proposals at 21st & 21st and the old Granite Furniture warehouse. We continue to struggle with how to grow and reduce the negative impacts of this growth.

Sugar House needs to continue to push the dialogue with the city regarding the demolition ordinance that allows for blight to continue in our neighborhood. We need to push the discussion about how we want our neighborhoods to grow and be invested in the process.

Sugar House needs committed efforts to get more affordable housing to meet the needs of those that work in our community, but can’t afford to live here. We are losing out on people who make a difference to our lives in teachers, police, fire personnel, etc. who should be welcomed into our community.

Sugar House will continue to have real problems with traffic impacts due to the growth. We need a transit master plan that makes sense, and we need to pay attention to pedestrian circulation safety issues in the business district.

We finally saw an end to the construction, but it was only temporary in the heart of the community. Not only are we looking at 105’ building on McClelland and Sugarmont, but we are likely to see much of the same thing on the east side of that block. We are just waiting for Craig Mecham to file his plans with the city. Residents need to stay involved in all these developments, since we are the ones that experience the impacts with traffic, parking, etc. We certainly are not done with the construction. The small area plan for 21st & 21st should be completed early in 2016, and we will see something different coming up there, and it is our voices that can help make those projects more compatible with our neighborhoods.

Ultimately we still have such great amenities in our community that is rarely seen elsewhere in this city.

Culpepper Earns a Spot on RMAC All-Academic Volleyball Team

uring her senior year at Murray High School, Amara Culpepper got into an accident going through a glass window. Her injury could have ended her athletic career. Instead, she sat out the rest of the season as a senior, and then earned a scholarship to Westminster College to play volleyball. On Oct. 22, Culpepper earned a spot on The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.

“In eighth grade, I played softball. One day, one of my friends invited me to an open court to play volleyball. My mom told me I should go, and once I started playing the game I loved it and decided to stick with it,” Culpepper said about how she got started in the sport she loves.

Culpepper’s passion for the game is evident more than just on the court. She excels in the classroom as well. She knows that earning a spot on the RWAC All-Academic Team required hard work.

“Along with my stats for hits and blocks, I also have to have pretty good grades. My stats in volleyball are getting better, and I’ve got a 3.7 grade average right now,” she said.

Culpepper’s plans for the future include becoming an elementary education major and teaching third grade, as well as keeping sports as part of her life. While she has participated with other teams in the past, volleyball is likely to remain her focus.

“Softball was so long ago, I kind of just grew out of that. If I were ever to try any other sport, I’d probably try track. I’m actually a pretty decent runner and I’m pretty fast. I think I’ll stick with volleyball, though,” she said.

Part of Culpepper’s success comes from being part of a supportive team. She admires the talent she sees around her.

“I have to give it up to our setters Jacey Saunders and Taylor Gustafson; without them I wouldn’t have any kills. People love to look at those statistics, and I just think I wouldn’t have any of it without them setting me up,” Culpepper said. “What has been fun is that my hits over the last three home games have gone up each time. They went from 18 and 19 to 21, then 24. I guess that’s been my favorite, seeing my skills sharpening and getting better.” l

Hogle Zoo Rendezvous Brings in Over $45,000 for Animal Care and Zoo Improvements

he Wildest Party in Town lived up to its name for the 18th year in a row. On the evening of Sept. 10, roughly 1,700 people gathered at the Hogle Zoo for the 18th annual Zoo Rendezvous. This event is the zoo’s biggest, most elaborate fundraising celebration of the entire year, and the people in attendance were treated to an exotic adventure involving live music, fine dining catered by local restaurants and special close-up encounters with some of the zoo’s most impressive animals.

Every year, this fundraising event brings in money that is essential for animal care, zoo maintenance and exhibit expansion or improvements. And, according to Hogle Zoo’s community relations director, Erica Hansen, “100 percent of the proceeds stay in the zoo.”

This year, the silent auction brought in over $45,000, an impressive total that tops last year’s by $13,000. This increase, due in large part to a new mobile bidding system, holds great promise for the next year of new projects and upkeep at the Hogle Zoo. Several of the zoo’s most beloved animals made special appearances for the partygoers.

Rizzo the polar bear swam and dived for treats, the elephants had a special performance and renowned falconer Steve Chindgren wowed the crowd with his eagle flight show.

Many local artists and businesses added special Sugar House flair to the evening as well. There were live music performances from The Steel Belts and The STR!KE, as well as aerial feats performed

by Voodoo Productions and a dancing and drumming routine by the Africa Heartwood Project.

The cuisine for the evening was provided by over 30 of the area’s most popular restaurants, including The Egg & I, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, Ruth’s Chris and Corner Bakery. Guests also had the opportunity to stop by for psychic readings with Marja Shelley Mystics or to take a ride on the zoo’s Conservation Carousel.

Conservation was a key theme of this year’s Rendezvous. Hogle Zoo has long been a “green” organization, but this year they went above and beyond to try to reduce the amount of waste from the event. For the first time, they deployed a team dubbed the “Green Brigade” during the event to make sure that all of the waste from the evening was thrown away or recycled properly. The Green Brigade was made up entirely of zoo staff and volunteers, all of whom believe in the zoo’s mission to reduce waste, recycle and protect the environment, and the inaugural team was a great success.

While representatives from Hogle Zoo could not provide details about specific projects or exhibits for which the Rendezvous money was earmarked, this year promises to be especially exciting. Animal lovers can always stop by to enjoy the zoo’s daily events, including animal training and feedings, as well as special programs, such as Wolf Awareness Day, coming up on Oct. 10.

Also, Sugar House locals who want to show their support for Hogle Zoo and its mission of conservation can keep an eye out for details about next year’s Zoo Rendezvous—it’s sure to be just as wild! l

Ann Romney’s Book Signing

n Friday, Oct. 2, the Sugar House Barnes and Noble held a book signing for Ann Romney’s new book, “In This Together.”

The book was released Sept. 29 and is a reflection on her early life, marriage and diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1998.

As with any book, the story centers around both positive and negative experiences of the disease and what could be done for her situation.

Multiple sclerosis, according to WebMD, is a long-lasting disease that can affect the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves in the eyes. The disease can cause problems with vision, balance, muscle control and other functions of the body.

The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation estimates about 400,000 people in the United States, and 2.5 million people worldwide, have multiple sclerosis, with higher rates of the disease occurring farther from the equator.

Despite having such overwhelming support from her husband, even being said to have told her he’d be “right there to push [the wheelchair],” it didn’t make things any easier for Romney. Being without a cure and only able to have treatment, Romney described the realization as “devastating.”

Since maintaining the disease, Romney experienced a glimmer of hope and was able to attain more energy to continue succeeding in life.

“There’s hope,” Romney said in a Facebook video post. “Together we can fight.”

What has helped her the most through her disease, according to Romney, was focusing on little goals to keep her body going. To really get a sense of how to control both mind and body, she focused on mind, body and faith through trial and error with multiple sclerosis.

Later in her video, she describes the difficulties of writing her book, because of both the intimate nature of her story and how “fragile” she felt.

“It was really quite a journey for me to write this book,” Romney said. “It took a lot of courage for me to be so honest and to share sort of my most vulnerable moments.”

While “In This Together” is meant to shed light on her experience throughout her disease, the book isn’t just about the vulnerable moments. Romney writes of her childhood, family, LDS faith, her kids and the storybook romance between herself and Mitt. “[Multiple sclerosis] opened my heart to be more loving and generous,” Romney said.

“It gave me a kinder heart.”

Last year, according to the National MS Society, the Romneys opened the Ann Romney Center for Neurological Diseases, a research facility focusing on multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease and brain tumors, in Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

According to Romney, the purpose for the research facility is to push more awareness and research into multiple sclerosis, and the same could be said about her book. “In This Together” focuses on what research has been done on

MS, as well as hope through experience.

“Multiple sclerosis was my cruelest teacher,” Romney said. “I’m grateful for the lessons that it taught me. They were unwelcome, but I am now grateful for them.” l

Sugar House and Westminster A Shared History

F

or 104 years, Westminster and Sugar House have been neighbors, business partners, fellow arts and athletics enthusiasts, and, most importantly, lifelong friends.

Although Westminster was founded in 1875, it was not until 1911 that the school found a permanent home in its current Sugar House location.

Colonel William and Jeannette Ferry donated the land (which originally included much of the surrounding neighborhoods) upon which the college stands today. The first building to be completed was the iconic Converse Hall, which celebrated its centennial in 2006.

Throughout its history, Westminster has always followed local and national ups and downs right alongside the rest of Sugar House. For example, as a result of military drafts from 1942-1945, Westminster regularly enrolled fewer than 50 college students each year. During this extremely lean time, the students, faculty and staff took over most of the campus maintenance, and from 7:30-8:20 each morning, they would fire furnaces, mow lawns, and do any chores necessary to keep the buildings and grounds in good shape. However, thanks in large part to the strong relationship between local supporters in Sugar House, Westminster pulled through, emerging as an even stronger and more vibrant part of the community.

Today, the Westminster experience continues to be greatly colored by the ambiance of Sugar House. Alumni cherish fond memories of spending time with friends at the Sugar Bowl or Tap Room, or lunch at the Soup Kitchen, and our current students love to hang out at places like

Fiddler’s Elbow and Sugar House Coffee. Memories of our favorite Sugar House haunts are as much a part of our collective Westminster lifestyle as our classes.

Many of our professors still live in Sugar House. In fact, as part of our master plan process, we learned that over 30 percent of all Westminster constituents (faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students) live within the Sugar House area. Sugar House quite literally remains home to Westminster, and through the work done in the project titled “Sugar House Stories,” the college has collected hours of oral and video histories of residents of Sugar House, who reflect on childhood walks past the former penitentiary grounds (now the site of Sugar House park) and hours playing in Emigration Creek on Westminster’s campus. Neighbors then and now have enjoyed athletic events, concerts and lectures – often free of charge – on our campus. l

Local Legends: Café Owner Bruce Holt Brings Sugar House Coffee, Community and the Best of Rock ‘N’ Roll

S

ince opening his 50s-themed coffee shop 14 years ago, Bruce Holt has become a beloved icon in the Sugar House community.

He has spent the majority of his life in and around the Sugar House area. He graduated from Highland High School and studied advertising and marketing in college before starting a 20-year career with Harman Music Group in Sandy.

Then, one day, he knew it was time for a change. He was tired of daily traffic and commuting to work, and he wanted to spend more time near his home and the Sugar House area he loved. For years, he had dreamed about opening up a coffee shop, and in 2001 that dream came true. He found a perfect location right on 700 East, painted it bright red, and named it Jitterbug Coffee Hop—a name inspired by a café chain in Las Vegas called “Jitters,” and not, surprisingly, by any particular fondness for 1950s culture and memorabilia.

The rockabilly theme, however, fits right in with Holt’s lifelong love of rock music. He got his first guitar as a Christmas present when he was 14 years old. It was a “piece of crap acoustic guitar from LaBelle’s on State Street,” he said, but quality or not, he was hooked.

He taught himself to play chords, hoping his parents would be impressed enough to buy him an electric guitar, but his father wanted no part of his son’s “loud rock and roll music.” Undeterred, 14-year-old Holt took a job at a bakery, scrubbing oven racks and greasing bread pans. “It was mind-numbing work,” Holt said, but he soon saved up enough to buy his first electric guitar and amp.

Music has been part of his life ever since.

His first taste of rock stardom came in junior high, when he and his band dressed up as KISS and played in front of a cheering, lighter-waving crowd at a school assembly. Since then, he has played in many different bands and occasionally plays gigs at local restaurants.

In the café, he fills any lulls by playing one of the several guitars that always sit out on display. His regular customers are used to hearing him play, and occasionally the more musically gifted patrons will join in, playing and singing along to the classics until business

picks up again.

When it comes to dedication and determination, no one out-works Holt. Since 2001, he has run his coffee shop almost single-handedly, taking only four days off every year for the 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

His longest vacation in recent memory was in 2013, when he spent two days working at a California NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) tradeshow, followed by

two more days in Disneyland. On his rare days off, Holt heads to the mountains. He likes to hike near Brighton and has especially fond memories of trips to Yellowstone.

When Holt works behind the counter at his coffee shop, he multitasks with ease—chatting with the customers whose names and stories he always remembers while making his signature coffee drinks, smoothies and sandwiches.

For many Sugar House locals, Holt and his business provide a place of community—a

place with great coffee, good conversations and a lot of heart. Many of his customers have been coming to Jitterbug for years, but Holt gives even strangers who walk in a chance to feel like friends and family.

As a lifelong member of the Sugar House community, as a father figure and friend to so many people who visit his café, and as a talented musician who is always eager to talk shop about the music industry and strum old favorite songs, Holt is truly a Sugar House local legend. l

The Second Commemoration Since the Death of Joe Hill

he commemoration of the execution of Joe Hill, whom many believe to have been wrongly convicted, was marked on Sept. 5.

“Joe Hill has been known as a labor songwriter. He was known before he died,” Dr. Lori Taylor, wrangler and co-chair of the Joe Hill Organizing Committee, said. “He would have already been well-known even if he hadn’t died.”

In an effort to destabilize the Wobblies, growing public opinion believes, Joe Hill was suspected and convicted of murder. While the evidence may be strong that Joe Hill was innocent, there is not yet sufficient evidence to say whether he was or was not guilty.

According to the AFL-CIO, Joe Hill was well known as an Industrial Worker of the World (IWW) or part of the “Wobblies,” as well as a folksinger of popular labor songs. His songs were played in hobo jungles, workers’ rallies and on picket lines.

Months before his arrival in Salt Lake City, a rally broke out in Utah. Hill’s songs were played in what became known as a riot started by the Wobblies.

“He’d been heading to Chicago and stopped in Utah,” Taylor said. “He went into a situation already volatile.”

What happened to the Wobblies was printed in the paper as the riot, according to Taylor. Hill arrived in a city that was already

anti-Wobblie.

Soon after visiting Utah, according to KSLA, Hill was caught in a dispute with his best friend, which made him the lead suspect in a double murder. The best friend had shot Hill after he hoped to date the friend’s exfiancé. The murder happened the same night Hill was treated for his gunshot wound, which made him a prime suspect.

“The friend was a hot head,” Taylor said.

“He shot Joe and immediately was sorry.”

Taylor explained that Murray was the centerfold of Swedish immigrants. Hill never presented his alibi at trial, but those in the Swedish community, according to Taylor, “knew it was true.”

“One important thing to look at is two innocent people were murdered,” Taylor said.

“I don’t believe Joe Hill did it.”

Hill was killed by a firing squad at the old state prison where Sugar House Park presently stands. Due to the nature of the history, Taylor and committee wanted the commemoration to be held at Sugar House Park.

“He was executed at the old state prison,” Taylor said. “We did it in the neighborhood because that’s where he died.”

The Joe Hill celebration marked the second commemoration since his execution nearly a hundred years ago. Hill, unlike other martyrs, was remembered not only for the

unjust, but for his songs.

“Joe Hill has been known as a labor songwriter,” Taylor said. “It’s the songs that set him apart.”

The real anniversary of Joe Hill’s death is in November. The anniversary in November is celebrated once a year as a vigil to remark on his death and remember him.

“It was Labor Day weekend,” Taylor said.

“And this weekend was more of a celebration.

The vigil will be somber.”

“There’s a long and beautiful tradition of resisting corporate power in America,” Desilets said. “Joe Hill (along with the activism that sprung up before and after his death) is an important part of that tradition. It is important to remember and celebrate our heroes.”

The event went from noon to 10 p.m., with the last performance by Judy Collins ending at 9 p.m.

“I wished I could have stayed longer,” Desilets said. “But really the important thing, for me, was being there.”

While it rained on the event earlier in the day, many still attended and continued to enjoy the music. As the day wore on, rain dissipated and sun covered the grounds.

Most of those who attended remained seated and quiet, as they listened to music played by Mark Ross, David Rovics, Judy Collins and many others. Each performer was given 45 minutes without any planned lengthy stop.

Taylor Hoffman, Sugar House resident, attended the event near the end. Hoffman had no idea she missed the Mischief Brew, a favorite of hers.

Judy Collins, however, brightened the mood.

“I didn’t know anything prior,” Hoffman said. “I did know who it was about, but had no clue it was the anniversary or that there was an event.”

Lack of advertising wasn’t what made her unaware, Hoffman explained.

“It was my fault,” Hoffman said.

“Someone was bound to say something at Black Cat Comics [her work]. I just go into my own insulated place.”

In response to what she missed, Hoffman purchased items from the Joe Hill store just outside the park. The store sold Joe Hill memorabilia and books, as well as CDs and records of performing bands.

Near the store, Chloe Stewart, a sophomore and Sugar House resident, stood beside her history project. She, along with Yasmin Projansky and Haley Segura, partnered together to create a project on one of the leaders in history.

“Why do any of the normal history leaders?” Stewart, the only one in attendance, asked. “We heard of his story and got really interested.”

The project on Joe Hill won the National History Day prize, and later the group visited Washington, D.C. for the project.

“This was my first,” Stewart said. “My partners have done science projects.”

The two descendants of Joe Hill and John Morrison, whom Hill was convicted of killing, attended the event. Both Rolf Hägglund and Marilyn Morrison-Ryan greeted each other warmly. According to Taylor, the friendly mix between the two descendants “really set the tone” for the event.

“It doesn’t have to be a point of contention,” Taylor said. “We can live in the present. Whether he’s guilty or not, the time of that question has passed.” l

City Plans a Rezone to Pave the Way for New Fire Station #3

A

portion of the parking lot at the Forest Dale Golf Course at 2425 South 900 East in Sugar House may become the new home of Salt Lake City Fire Department Station #3 if current city plans continue on to completion. Some residents think the city has not considered all other alternatives well enough, and urge a vote against continuing the process to move the station to the site south of Interstate 80 on 900 East.

Based on a study of ten possible locations to host the station that serves the growing west and central areas of Sugar House, the small paved part of the golf course property is the preferred location. First, though, the Salt Lake City Council must rezone the property from Open Space to Public Use so that it can accommodate the proposed use. The paved portion of the 61-acre Forest Dale Golf Course property is currently used for wintertime salt storage, and is not essential to golf course functions.

The planning commission submitted its report on the proposed action to the Salt Lake City Council in August. Sugar House residents provided public input at the Oct. 20 council meeting.

“It doesn’t make sense,” Sugar House resident George Chapman told the city council. Paraphrasing the mayor, Chapman noted that the location on 900 East, south of the freeway overpass, “would leave the north part of Sugar House without fire service if there is an earthquake.” Some experts predict that the overpasses on access roads like 900 East could fall if a major seismic event were to shake the valley.

Other Sugar House residents chided the council for considering an option that will take away open space in the area. Jeff Salt noted that “aesthetic values and property values” in the Forest Dale Golf Course area will be significantly impacted by a choice to convert the lot, which had once been tennis courts, to a fire station. He urged the council to retain Fire Station #3 in the central Sugar House area.

The next step comes on Nov. 10, when the city council is scheduled to vote on whether to remove the property from Open Space inventory to allow the fire station plans to proceed at the Forest Dale location. If the vote is affirmative, the rezone will take place in six months, following the law that requires a waiting period before the change is official.

When responding to calls after hours, noise protocols advise careful use of audible devices.

In residential areas, lights and sirens are used on dispatch only for advanced life saving and fire calls. Of the 2,104 calls that Station #3 served last year, 444 were fire calls and 1,660 for medical response.

The site selection process involved four key criteria. First, access to the site is crucial for large fire and rescue equipment and rapid response times. Second, long-term viability is important, as the investment in the station is substantial. Third, the property satisfies the demands of a maximum four-minute response time to any place in its service area that is required of a fire station location. Fourth, the parking lot property on 900 East is of adequate size to accommodate a ladder truck, with more room for growth.

The current Fire Station #3 houses one truck and four firefighters. Without the ability to grow, the existing station is unable to keep up with increasing population and business demands in the area. Salt Lake City Fire Department Station #3 serves the city from 500 East to 1700 East and from 1700 South to the border of the city near 3000 South. l

Expanding Efforts to Build a Safe, Healthy Community in the Salt Lake Valley

T

his year, Salt Lake County government led the way on economic growth and jobs, low taxes, public safety and responsiveness to residents. As Utah continues to rebound from the Great Recession, we have an opportunity to take charge of our future and work together to show how we can make a bright future.

We’ve launched the Global Cities Initiative, which helps business and civic leaders in the metro region grow their business through exports and international connections. Evidence shows that it was the metro areas who led this country out of the recession, and that when businesses receive support in learning how reaching new customers and global markets, their employees benefit, earning 17 percent more in salaries.

We opened new treatment options for individuals who end up in jail due to crimes related to mental illness or substance abuse.

With funding help from the Utah legislature, we opened a new community facility for adult women leaving incarceration. The 16-bed residential home allows these women to transition away from jail, get treatment, reunite with children and families and start establishing a more stable and productive path for their lives.

Salt Lake County brought more than 31

homeless service providers together around an exciting plan to minimize homelessness. For the first time, everyone is on the same page about what we want to accomplish, beginning with recognizing and meeting the distinct needs of at-risk and homeless populations. As a coalition, we’re asking the Utah legislature to support our plan by providing money to build several new, smaller shelters that serve the needs of families with children, homeless individuals who are working and other specific groups. A one-size-fits-all approach to this problem hasn’t worked in the past, and we need to channel all the care, compassion, effort and money in a new direction.

With a sizeable grant from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, we’ve launched a community partnership in Kearns to improve child well-being throughout the township. Our framework—Evidence2Success—was developed by the foundation to collect data on the needs and the strengths of local youth. Granite School District will receive additional support to boost their educational programs, and it will all be guided by the parents and community leaders who know their schools and neighborhoods best.

Salt Lake County works every day to

serve the entire community, through programs such as Meals on Wheels for senior citizens in need, education for coaches and parents on how to recognize and prevent head injuries, expanding senior centers, such as the one in Midvale, to support healthy lifestyles for “baby-boomers” and building three new regional parks, so that every family has a place to get outdoors and enjoy recreational activities together.

In 2016, we’ll rededicate our efforts to reform the criminal justice system and by achieving that, improve public safety. My 2016 budget, adopted by a bipartisan county council vote, provides funding to meet the immediate needs of the sheriff, the jail, the district attorney and the Behavioral Health Division in the short term, as well as money for innovative projects to prevent crime in the long term.

I’m proud of the bipartisan collaboration that is uniting county leaders, state leaders, our Human Services Department and the Criminal Justice Advisory Council – with the single goal of spending criminal justice and social justice dollars more effectively.

How will we measure success? We’ll know we’ve succeeded when 1) we’ve put the criminals behind bars, 2) the homeless in hous-

When we’ve done that, we’ll have made a measurable and lasting difference in peoples’ lives. l

I am Grateful for the Poor Man’s Casserole

I

t slapped me in the face, like an old Three Stooges movie. Last month my husband came home from work holding a large envelope. Handing it over, he simply stated, “Read this.” My heart sank. You see, every year in December, his company does their annual, “Merry Christmas layoff,” and I was certain it was his turn. I began to hyperventilate, sweat trickled down my forehead as my trembling hands opened the letter. How could they, after 26 years of company loyalty? They can’t!

We are only four years from retirement! As I read and re-read the words on the letter, my mind began to compute: not a layoff letter, but a retirement letter. In two weeks, TWO weeks, my husband would be retired! Could we do it a full four years before we had planned?

Yikes!

Now, I have a confession to make. We have not always enjoyed a frugal lifestyle; in fact, in the early years of our marriage it was quite the opposite. We lived to the point of an extravagance that almost sent us bust.

We lived right at the edge of our means, throwing caution to the wind, buying now

used along the way. #1 – Ditch the luxuries. Cutting cable TV, gym memberships, and eating out top my list of quick ways to save some serious cash.

Brown bag it for lunch, discover Hulu for TV entertainment and take a walk instead of utilizing an expensive gym treadmill. #2 – Sell your stuff. Cleaning out the clutter not only can bring in some extra cash, but it clears the mind of clutter and helps you get organized. Utilize your local consignment store (check Yelp.com for a list of several), make use of online classifieds or give Ebay a try. #3 – Find alternative ways to travel. If you have two cars, sell one. Try taking TRAX or carpooling to work. #4 – Cut your grocery costs. Groceries can be a huge part of the family expenses. Instead of planning your shopping for the meals you want, plan your meals to what’s on sale.

One only needs to Google “Getting out of debt” to find a plethora of advice from financial savvy experts: refinance the house, make budgeting lists and spreadsheets to track payoffs, start by paying off the highest interest loan rate, etc. All good practices, but what if you don’t qualify for said refinance, or your budget doesn’t cover your bills, let alone allow you to make extra payments? How will making a list help when what you really need is money today?

The fact is, finding immediate money in a set budget takes sacrifice, creativity, work and commitment. Here are some practical tips for increasing your finances that I’ve learned and

Poor Man’s Casserole:

rown 2/3 lb. of ground beef or turkey with ½ an onion.

Salt and pepper to taste and place in the bottom of a three qt. round casserole dish. Drain two cans of green beans and layer on top of the beef. Layer one can cream of mushroom soup on top of beans and top with about three cups of smashed potatoes (about five potatoes boiled in salty water and smashed with a little milk and butter).

Microwave on high until hot (about 10 to 15 minutes).

Making a Clean Sweep

A

s long as everything stays the same, I’m super cool with change. So when January rolls around with all its high-pressure resolutions and soul-destroying goals, I choose to decline. After years of making unobtainable promises, I know I won’t learn a new language, acquire the ability to run marathons or stop eating candy by the pound.

But this year I decided it was time to get rid of the clutter that had infiltrated my home when I wasn’t looking. On January 1, my house seemed as organized as the shelves at Dollar Tree the day after Christmas, so I thought maybe it was time to clean things up.

(FYI: Because Americans have so much junk, there’s a store that sells only containers to store our stuff. There are even boxes to store our boxes. Crazy, I know.)

I’ve heard when you’re organized, you can be lazy. That was incentive enough to get

to the bedroom to sort through my clothes.

Cleaning the closet is difficult, because I’m pretty sure I wear all my clothes every day.

But I found the dress I wore to my mom’s second wedding, ballet shoes from dance class 35 years ago, the sequined skirt I swore I’d wear once I lost 25 pounds and a ketchup-stained T-shirt from my first major league ballgame.

Gone.

Then I attacked the bathroom. I thought it might be easier to throw a grenade into the bathtub, shut the door and walk away action-hero style, in slow motion.

I’m truly not a hoarder. I just figure at some point I will use the dozens of hotel shampoos and travel-sized body washes I’ve saved for emergencies.

I dug into my drawers (so to speak) and purged almost-empty hair spray bottles, driedup face masks, greasy lotions and anti-aging

started. Once my mess was stashed away in designer bins, I’d have more time for napping, Pinteresting or sitting on the porch with a cold drink. (Well, not in January, but at some point this year.)

My kitchen was the first place I tackled.

I thought it would go quickly until I started throwing out cans of soup that had expired in 2009, quinoa I bought during my whole-grain phase and bags of organic kelp that were never opened. That’s when I realized this project could take longer than I anticipated.

The freezer was next. I tossed out Ziplocs filled with frozen flesh from indeterminate sources (could be salmon, could be sausage) and Fudgesicles coated with ice crystals.

Healthy Habit Tofu Extravaganza meals I couldn’t choke down were sent to the trash bin.

After taking a breather to eat a bag of Almond Roca (Christmas clearance!), I headed

creams that did not work. I tossed cold tablets from the 1980s, stretched-out hair elastics and a tube of … something unidentifiable.

Then I turned to my desk where office products go to die. I found a roll of two-cent stamps, dried up pens that were too far from the garbage can to throw out, tons of cable connectors (although I’m not sure what they connect), enough Post-it notes to write a novel and several used gift cards with a total balance of $1.57.

I finally collapsed on the couch, reveling in the afterglow of a job well done. My house felt lighter, like it had gone on a green juice cleanse, and I was pleased with my Zen-like non-attachment to material possessions.

That’s when I realized I had room for new stuff! And there were New Year’s sales! Maybe next year I’ll add, “Don’t buy more junk” to my list of soul-crushing resolutions. l
