ALTA HIGH’S LONGEST-SERVING TEACHER RETIRES

T

he next time Alta High has a fire drill, something will be missing—a beloved social studies teacher wearing a taco hat to help his students locate him.

Rique Ochoa retired this past summer.

“I’m not the typical, model teacher, but I’ve taught 45 years and I really still like what I do,” he said as he packed up thousands of books that edged his classroom. “I just turned 73 and I want to do other things. I want to finish reading some books. I want to learn how to play the guitar. Honestly, I’m going to miss the kids.”

Ochoa was the last teacher left from when the school opened in 1978. He was hired to coach and build the debate program, but Ochoa also taught English, drama and social studies.

“Students are students. The biggest thing is letting the kids know that you care. I tell my kids to believe in what they want to do. It really comes back to you never know who you affect. I learned that my very first year,” he said.

Ochoa remembers a student who was disruptive and had a hard time learning. Ochoa planned to suggest at parent-teacher conference that he should find another class when the student’s father said to Ochoa, “‘Before we sit down, I want to shake your hand. The only reason my son comes to school is because of your class.’ That’s when I realized I didn’t know how much and who I was able to reach.”

A harvest of hope for Thanksgiving

W

hile Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate with friends and family, for many people in Utah, it’s another reminder of inflation and food poverty. The Utah Food Bank reports that one in nine children in the state don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

Last year, in an effort to help children during the holidays, Susan Westland, associate pastor at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Sandy (8575 S. 700 East), set out to provide Thanksgiving meals to students at Sandy Elementary (8725 S. 280 East).

The church has taken this school under its wings, providing school supplies and other resources, but Westland wanted to do more. She reached out to the school to determine which families might need extra help.

Church volunteers donated money, shopped for groceries and put together Thanksgiving meals for 75 families that included all the fixings plus a $25 gift card.

“The Monday before Thanksgiving, we distributed [the food boxes],” said Carla Johnson, a church volunteer. “Once people found out what we were doing there were a lot more [who asked for help]. We did have some extra bags and then we bought 30 additional gift cards that we gave out to people just so they can have something.”

Although Westland has moved to a new calling in Arizona, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church plans to provide meals for Sandy Elementary students again this year. They estimate 100 families at the school will need food for Thanksgiving, at a cost of $45 per meal. The estimated cost will be $4,500 and Johnson said the church will accept monetary donations from the community to ensure each child has a happy Thanksgiving.

“We’re not asking that the donation has to be $45,” she said. “If there’s any financial donation that they would like to give, they

In addition to the Thanksgiving food packages, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church has partnered with the Utah Food Bank to provide food at the church two Saturdays each month to help struggling families. Last year, a donor also provided the church with dozens

of new coats for men, women and children, so they could be warm during the winter.

“There was just a look on these little kids’ faces when they came up and picked out a coat and we saw how appreciative they were,” Johnson said. “We’re a very community-minded church. We host the Amer-

Several area teams excel at state championship as Utah’s high school unified soccer program grows

In any sport, it’s a difficult accomplishment. In the growing sport of unified soccer, it’s remarkable. This year, 54 unified soccer teams competed, up from 30 last year.

Yet Murray High succeeded in that achievement to defend their state championship title.

Murray High junior Mia Cox scored a goal in that title game and was receiving congratulatory hugs and high-fives afterward from her teammates, friends and family, her principal and superintendent.

“It was exciting,” she said. “I like kicking the ball with my friends on the team because it’s fun.”

Unified soccer is a program of Special Olympics Utah in partnership with the Utah High School Activities Association, that joins high school-age students with and without intellectual disabilities playing side-by-side on the same team. Five coed players take to a smaller-sized field in 10-minute halves playing in competitive or player development divisions.

“We had teams from Richfield High School to up in Logan in eight divisions,” said Boston Iacobazzi, Unified Champion School’s college-growth coordinator. “Several schools had two teams and a couple had three.”

Teams first played in local tournaments before they competed in the regional round robin competitions until the top two finishers from each division were determined. The state championships in those divisions played Oct. 10 at the Real Salt Lake stadium.

“It was close competition for a lot of the teams at both the playoffs as well as at the championships. A lot of games went into overtime and ended in PKs, which was exciting,” he said.

At the local tournament in Midvale, Hillcrest High senior Haylee Wardle was all about winning.

“Let’s go!” she encouraged her teammates. “We want to get that gold.”

Wardle, her teammates and coach Rebecca Remy watched as Hillcrest freshman Johnny Bisby brought the torch into the school’s stadium. ASL club members signed the national anthem as well as the athlete’s oath.

“We have a lot of Husky pride and we want everyone to feel that at our school,” said Remy, who has been an assistant during her 20 years teaching, but stepped in as head coach this year.

“I love seeing the students in other areas besides academics, witnessing their

sportsmanship and inclusion and the unity with their peers, and using their skills on the field. It’s great our drill, band, cheer and a bunch of different clubs and teams are supporting all the unified teams competing.”

In front of hundreds of fans at the RSL stadium, Hunter High junior Whitney Rasmussen took the athlete’s oath and sang the national anthem before joining her team to take a silver medal in their game.

For many student-athletes, it’s an opportunity to not only compete, but also to develop their skills, meet people, see old friends and belong to a team.

“It gives them a place to belong and to represent their school, just like their peers,” Iacobozzi said.

Longtime friends Mia Jackman of Riverton High and Jaymi Bonner of Herriman High gave each other hugs when they saw each other at a tournament, which was supported by Jordan School District’s superintendent.

Mia’s dad, Jared, is thankful for unified sports.

“It gives them the chance to do things that they’re seeing typical kids do and a chance to interact with some of their peers,” he said. “It makes them feel part of the school.”

Jaymi’s mom, Jeana, likes unified sports “enriches everyone’s lives and gives us perspective. It’s about, teamwork and sportsmanship. It’s not only about winning and being the best.

That’s a valuable lesson that our kids are teaching us.”

Herriman High received silver medals at state.

Jordan High junior Kaitlyn Unzaga decided to play because “it’s really fun and it gets my energy out.”

“I always play no matter what if I win or not win. I really love playing for my school with my friends,” she said.

“At school, we eat lunch together and practiced our kicking and defense, and how to move left and right. Then, we hang out.”

Her coach, Jenna Fox, said the school’s program has grown from five students to 22.

“The kids keep telling the incoming freshmen about it, so our numbers are getting bigger,” she said. “We have a developmental team and a more competitive one so we’re getting all abilities playing time and we’ve got some awesome peer tutors who are playing with them. What’s fun is the kids are all friends and they respect each other. So, we play together, we go to class together, we celebrate together.”

Several Jordan High students, teachers and administrators were watching the games along with Canyons School District’s superintendent and other district administrators and school board members.

“Jordan SBOs (student body officers) gave us a send-off. They lined up creating tunnels for us to go through and we got cheered and waved off for state. That was super special for our team,” Fox said. “Having the championships at RSL, it makes them feel like royalty.”

Continued from front page “His students know they’re loved, they’re valued, and they’re appreciated,” Wrigley said. “These kids 20, 40 years later, are still calling him their best teacher.”

Ochoa’s debate program grew to 200 students. To prepare for tournaments, he gave students stacks of evidence, 400 pages deep.

He also started the Silver & Black Tournament, a national qualifier for the Tournament of Champions.

“Back in 1990, the school district limited us to one overnight travel per activity which meant my debate team would only get that caliber of competition once. I wanted my kids to get more, so I thought, ‘why don’t I invite those teams and have my kids compete against them here?’” Ochoa said.

Alta students qualified every year for nationals and secured four second-place state team trophies during his 17 years coaching.

Speech and debate team members Kim Washburn and Dollie Murphrey McFarlin, who graduated in 1985, placed in in the top 10 at state; they credit Ochoa for their teaching and law careers.

“He was a skilled debate coach and took us to Berkeley for the big debate tournament,” McFarlin said. “He made sure we had tough competition, but afterwards, he’d stand on a desk and get us all laughing. Debate was our place to go; he guided us to make good choices.”

Washburn agreed: “He has a knack for being able to teach something eight different ways. He knew when to have fun and when to give us support.”

Ochoa’s drive was more than winning; he wanted to be there for his students.

When he was a debater in a small Catholic high school in East Los Angeles, Ochoa’s forensics coach had a significant impact on him. However, when his coach left, the school didn’t hire someone new, so Ochoa finished his high school debate career as a team captain, but without any guidance.

“I knew what it was like having someone influential, so I wanted to be there for my students,” said Ochoa, who also debated at Brigham Young University.

Ochoa wasn’t the backbone of just the debate team. He coached the academic decathlon, the “We the People” competition, and assisted coaching the boys soccer team, helping them win five state championships.

His love of sports—and academics—was apparent when he announced the football and boys’ and girls’ basketball games as the “Voice of the Hawks” during home games. He called football games for 40 years, boys’ basketball for 41 years and girls’ basketball for 15 years.

“When Alta was first built, I guarded the back fence to make sure that people didn’t jump over the fence to sneak in. Mostly people would back up their pickup trucks to the field to have a good time. But when Don Ward, who was a legend, decided he didn’t want to announce anymore, I decided to do that instead of watching the fence,” he said. “I had a lot of fun announcing. I’d get vocabulary words

from the English department and incorporated them into the flow of the game, saying, ‘It was a flamboyant play’ or ‘the tackle was made by a veritable plethora of Hawks.’ One I enjoyed was, ‘The Hawks were faced with a conundrum.’ They had just scored a long field goal, but a penalty gave them a first down. Afterwards, I’d say, ‘That’s another word brought to you by the Alta High English Department.’

In the 1990s, Ochoa resigned from debate to team teach Advanced Placement U.S. History with Ward in a room with a moveable wall so “we could open it for our 300 kids to be in one giant room,” but closed it when Ochoa taught AP government.

Ochoa was recognized as Alta High’s outstanding educator as well as Utah’s outstanding history teacher.

“For my birthday growing up, I was given a World War II book from the supermarket with a picture of the Battle of Midway on the cover. I just ate that thing up; I still have it,” he said. “I like American history because of my personal ties. My grandmother escaped the Mexican Revolution crossing into the United States. My uncle who was a Marine got bayoneted in battle. My wife’s dad lied about his age, so at 15, he was fighting the Japanese in New Guinea. I learned during the Depression my family ate tongue and beef brains as lowcost substitutes. I teach the Zoot Suit Riots because that happened in my neighborhood when I was growing up. I talk about the ‘68 campaign, and I tell students how Bobby Kennedy came in a motorcade down Whittier Boulevard and was extending his hand.

I reached—it was a swing and a miss—but I was that close. That was the day before he won the primary in California and the day before he was shot. We talk about the implications if he had survived to win the presidency, how there would have been a bigger push for civil rights, and I think the war in Vietnam would have ended sooner—and how those choices were taken from us.”

2021 graduate Jack Dutton, who is now majoring in political science and history, said Ochoa inspired him.

“He uses his insight and experiences into American history to make it personable and relatable; when we were talking about the Cold War, he’d tell us how in school, he’d have nuclear bomb drills,” Dutton said. “He wants his students to understand why these things matter and how they connect to us. He knows how to teach history. It’s not just dates.

It’s this overarching narrative with people who matter.”

Dutton’s mother, Mimi, said her two sons would “tell stories about funny things they’d learned in his class at our dinner table. That’s the sign of an excellent teacher, when the kids are that excited, they want to share it with their parents.”

Jack Dutton recalls his teacher had a tradition surrounding the AP U.S. History test.

“The night before the test, he called every student on their landlines, and said, ‘Hey, I’m

cheering you on. I know you, you’ll do well.’

Ochoa brought in other ways to enrich students’ experiences. Under his direction, Alta hosted colloquiums with nationally known speakers and Pulitzer Prize winners.

With an invitation to Ochoa from Rutgers University, Alta was the first high school in the nation to pilot the university’s women’s leadership program.

He led student groups to see the presidential inaugurations of Bush, Obama and Trump, and tour historic sights.

Sandy City Police volunteers aim to help make community safe

L

ast year, 308 homeowners asked Sandy’s Volunteers in Police Service to check on their houses while on vacation. That number has increased to 396 by early-October, with the holiday season approaching.

“Vacation watches are a huge thing we do,” said Amy Bryant, Sandy City crime prevention coordinator who oversees the VIPS program. “When somebody goes out of town and fills out a request form on our web page, our VIPS get out of their marked vehicle and walk the property. They’ll know if a car is parked in the driveway and who may be coming in to water the plants. We have a blueprint of what to expect when we arrive at the place and then based on that, we check the doors, the windows, go into the backyard if they’ve given us access to that just to make sure the house is the way it should be while they’re out of town.”

While the number of vacation checks fluctuates month to month, Bryant knows requests can increase during the holidays.

“On that vacation watch form, we have the information to contact the owner,” she said. “If the VIPS get there and they find that there’s packages that are piling up on the porch, then they can call the owner and say, ‘Hey, you may want to have a neighbor or a family member come pick these up.’ If we find something amiss, then the VIPS back out, get to safety and call the patrol officers.

The VIPS’ role is to observe and report, not get involved in a conflict.”

This is one of several duties of VIPS, a program that was launched in Sandy in 2007 with five volunteers. Sandy is just one of a handful programs across Utah.

“We started the VIPS program after the 9-11 attacks when President Bush called for people to be more involved in volunteering around the country. It’s one of the programs that his administration put together. He really pushed that program and there was federal funding for the training for it while he was in office,” she said. “We saw a big benefit to the program so, we took on the expense to fund the program, did our own training and continued to bring volunteers on.”

Currently, 18 volunteers have been taking on the VIPS duties, with four more expected to join the staff late year.

Sandy residents or business owners can volunteer when they’re 21 years old. There is no upper age limit as she has a 89-yearold VIPS member who has been on the team since its initiation. Volunteers need to be in good physical and emotional condition, have good driving records and undergo background checks and drug tests.

While about one-quarter of her team may have police or security backgrounds, most are wanting to “give their own time to a great cause. They’re working for the benefit of not only our police department, but also for the community in which they live in mak-

ing sure that it’s safe. They’re out there making a difference,” she said.

Before volunteers work in pairs for a four-hour shift, they are trained on equipment use from radio, laptop and traffic trailers to knowing how to look for and report suspicious activity. VIPS also are First Aid and CPR certified.

“The VIPS training is very extensive.

We have 30 hours of in-class or hands-on training before they put a VIPS uniform on and go out. We also put them through our police Citizen’s Academy, which is another 30 hours of training,” she said, adding that ongoing training is every month for an additional 90 minutes. “It’s a huge time commitment.”

In addition to vacation checks, the unarmed VIPS observe and report suspicious activities and patrol city neighborhoods, parks, trails, schools, churches, businesses, shopping malls, UTA TRAX parking lots, construction sites and other areas. They also are available to help the Community Action Response Team in tasks, such as helping locate missing children.

“They’re making sure everything is safe and being alert to their surroundings. We also do extra patrols when somebody calls in and says, ‘There’s been a suspicious vehicle round in our neighborhood for the last couple of days’ or ‘We got egged last night and toilet papered; we can use the extra patrol in the area.’ When we know a particular area has been hard hit with vehicle burglaries, our VIPS do extra patrols,” she said.

Former Canyons Board of Education member Steve Wrigley has been part of the VIPS program for five years. His background includes correctional counseling, firefighting and has served on the governor’s emergency response team.

“I’ve always had an interest in criminology, and this is a way to give back to the community,” he said. “People often complain that

there’s crime in their community and there’s nothing they could do. This is a small way to get back on crime and make my community better.”

For him, it’s often an educational approach from reminding dog owners about leash laws in Dimple Dell to firework codes on the Fourth of July; more often, it’s on burglary and crime prevention.

“We have about eight gyms in the city, so we’ll go patrol them because there’s a lot of stuff being stolen out of cars outside of the gym. We’ll sit in the parking lot and radio anything in. We’ve followed Amazon and other delivery trucks, looking to see if there’s porch pirates. We’ve let people know they have a package on their porch that they may want to move inside so it’s not taken.

Last night, we stopped at 15 homes with open garage doors. A lot of people go to the gym and take their keys, but they forget about the valuables in their cars. The same with garages. Sometimes, they leave valuable things or even their keys in the garage so if they forget to put the garage door down, someone has access to your car, everything in your car and possibly your house. So, we’ll try to tell people to take their valuables with them and close garage doors. We’re just trying to help cut down on crime,” he said. “Most people thank us; they are grateful to have someone on patrol in their neighborhood.”

Another task, especially spring through fall, is when the VIPS place and move the city’s two traffic trailers to detour speeders.

“That saves our officers hours every week from doing that which allows our officers more time to be on the road,” Bryant said. “We’ve parked a marked patrol car in areas that had traffic or speeding problems in hopes that the decoy vehicle serves as a reminder to people to slow down. We have three cars we move to different locations, so it saves our officers’ time and manpower

for us to be able to do those kinds of things.

We’re not trying to take jobs away from the officers. We’re trying to enhance the officers’ ability to stay on the road and responding to 911 calls or doing proactive police work.”

Bryant said in 2022, VIPS accumulated 1,958 volunteer hours, saving the police department more than $51,000 if volunteers were paid per hour at a rate of $26.20. This year, with eight new volunteers, the total number of hours this far has increased to 2,411, for a savings of more than $63,000.

Another way VIPS help is as “a visual deterrent at schools; we’ll park our vehicle and turn on the amber light bars just to remind people, ‘Hey, you got to slow down in these school crossings,’” she said of the 73 school crossing shifts they’ve already performed this year.

Some of the activities VIPS perform are educational for the community and school children.

“If somebody wants a booth at a community event, like the Sego Lily Gardens fair or the library or a school event, we can hand out informational items. We’re talking with people, letting them see that this is something we do,” Bryant said.

Recently, at a Willow Canyon Elementary event, students were taking turns riding in a powered kid-sized police car around their blacktop from volunteer Lisbeth Monterroso, who joined VIPS to ensure that Sandy stays as a community with “peaceful neighborhoods” as she remembers it as a teenager.

“I want our future generation to have the opportunities I’ve had here,” she said. “I want them to live in a nice neighborhood, enjoy the view and feel safe.”

Having a background in criminal law, she downloaded the Neighborhood Watch app and learned of the program, but what she has experienced was beyond her expectations.

“The people immediately made me want to be part of VIPS; they treated me as a family,” she said. “I love interacting with people we meet at an event, knowing they’re comfortable to reach out and tell us what’s happening in their neighborhood or their concerns.”

Volunteer Gunner Hansen was by the Polaris Ranger they use to patrol Bell Canyon, Dimple Dell and Porter Rockwell trails, giving students coloring books and badge stickers.

Hansen, who served as a security officer in the Air Force, became a VIP last year.

“We’re extra eyes and ears for the police,” he said. “There’s a community of us who volunteer and we’re there to make sure the police feel appreciated. There’s a brotherhood, sisterhood, this camaraderie and these officers, they have your back; they just love what they do for the community and we’re there to help.” l

Lights, camera, success: A Canyons School District filmmaker’s advice

In Canyons School District’s 13th film festival, a record was set with 242 entries from 610 students and teachers. It’s a sequel that’s only missed one year—2021— since the District began 15 years ago. Even during COVID, the show went on with a virtual awards ceremony.

This 2023-24 film festival categories will remain the same: short film, documentary, animation, PSA, newscast and teacher film in addition to the festival poster contest.

From the entries, the winners of the foreign language and digital citizenship will be announced.

This year’s film festival deadline is April 9, 2024. The red-carpet ceremony is April 25, 2024.

While last year’s top video entries are posted on the District’s website, honorees also will be recognized on Utah Education Network-TV at a yet to-be-announced date, said film festival director Justin Andersen, who said he appreciates the learning that leads up to the film festival.

“I like how the film festival helps students be creative and at the same time, it provides them an end goal,” he said. “Anyone can enter, they can borrow a device to film from school, come up with a storyline, a schedule and be their critique of their own work. They feel successful when they meet their goal to submit a video. I like seeing how they’re feeling proud of their work. That’s a powerful thing.”

While Andersen is fairly new to coordinating the film festival, he has been involved for eight years.

“I’ve seen kids submit videos every year; it’s been fun to see them grow and try harder things they’ve learned. They get better and better every year,” he said. “Some of the kids have submitted for years and maybe they’ve never won, but they come back, excited to try different categories.”

Hillcrest High 2023 graduate Abigail Slama-Catron first heard about the film festival as a second grader.

In a backstage interview after winning the PSA contest about supporting Girl Scouts by buying cookies that year, the youngster said she wanted to continue entering films in the festival. She kept her word, submitting entries as a student every year the film festival was held.

“I enjoy the process of filmmaking,” Slama-Catron said. “It’s fun picking ideas. I liked my pet adoption PSA in fourth grade.

I was obsessed with animals, and it was so cute when I started out with all these Snoopys around me, but my words were serious. I started with a PSA because it was only a minute and did films about topics I knew something about, so it was easier.”

She also appreciated being able to be creative, especially with her short film,

“I love that film. It’s a fun story. I was 11 and it was about my dog, thinking he can do all these fun things like race and fly. I portrayed him as a child who believes he could do everything. I had never done a feature film before, so it was fun to branch out. It was a simple story, but it turned out to be a favorite,” Slama-Catron said.

She entered several documentaries.

“I learned how to research, and I especially liked doing some first-person documentaries, which makes me feel immersed in the story. In elementary school, I interviewed people about Hilltop House, and I got to learn what they do and how they help families. I also interviewed people to learn the history of Mt. Jordan (Middle School) and see it being torn down firsthand for another film,” Slama-Catron said. “In middle school, I included an interview with Jesse Owens’ daughter for a documentary about the Berlin Olympics.”

Some of her entries were group entries that she did as class assignments or with friends.

“I learned how to create as a team and how much work is involved,” she said.

“I learned what worked and what didn’t.

Throughout my filmmaking, I learned other skills, starting with (former film festival director) Katie Blunt teaching me how to use a tripod and the rule of thirds. I learned how to

place your action or the person you’re interviewing in the best camera angles. I learned the importance of storyboarding and how it’s helpful to have an outline of your script before you fully write it. I learned a lot about lighting, sound and editing. From watching other people’s films, I’ve gotten ideas and I’ve learned how to tell an engaging story, especially from one teacher who enters every year. I always look forward to watching his entry.”

As a result of learning skills through her Canyons Film Festival entries, Slama-Catron, as Hillcrest’s audiovisual student body officer, created more than 35 films for her school. She also entered several contests, including being the youth runner-up at the Colorado Environmental Film Festival.

“Canyons Film Fest has made me into a comfortable filmmaker, editor and director. I wouldn’t have any idea of what to do in filmmaking if I didn’t do that nor would I have found this passion,” she said, adding now in her first semester of college, she is taking her first filmmaking class. “Going to the awards night is like being at the Oscars. Watching the films there is incredible. You get to watch an elementary newscast, then you see a hard-hitting documentary from a high school student.

It’s engaging and you’re proud even if you don’t win. It’s important to try something new because you get that chance to learn. I don’t think when I was 7 doing these films

that I would be taking a college film class. I just did it to have fun.”

The 2022-23 award winners in the PSA category include Lucca Welch, Oliver Lundell, Liam Eliason and Kasey Horrocks, Sunrise Elementary; Jake Despain, Eastmont Middle; and Narayani Shankar, Hillcrest High.

The animation winners include Santiago Gonzelez, East Sandy Elementary; Joshua Lindsay, Albion Middle; and Jaeden Aguirre, Alta High.

Newscast winners are from Sprucewood Elementary and Jordan High School.

Documentary winners are Ethan Moore, Brookwood Elementary; Tawny McEntire, Eastmont Middle; and Kasch Hart, Corner Canyon High.

Short film winner are Ian Gibbs, Oak Hollow Elementary; Owen Turcsanski, Liam Turcsanski and Logan Hart, Albion Middle; and Jackson Hughes and Carter Kenworthy, Corner Canyon High.

The world language category winner is Anay Mertz, Hillcrest High and the digital citizenship award went to Slama-Catron. The poster contest winner is Nash Anderson, Hillcrest High.

A legacy of dedication: SLCC names lab after longest-serving instructor

A

s a student at Utah Technical College at Salt Lake, now Salt Lake Community College, Steve Mitchell learned how to solder rather than weld a pinhole closed in sheet metal, a technique he learned from his automotive instructor, Neal Grover.

“I’d show technicians and they’d say, ‘nobody does that,’” he said. “That’s one of the many things I learned from Mr. Grover.

It’s the most efficient and best way to do it.

I’ve never seen anybody else do it that way in 35-plus years. Now there’s a whole bunch of people who are using his knowledge in shops.”

Grover, at 84, is an adjunct professor at SLCC. He has been a student, instructor and administrator with the college for 65 years, just one decade shy of the school’s existence.

This fall, the auto collision repair and refinishing training lab was named after him.

“Having Mr. Grover’s name on this lab shows the value of respect that he has earned,” Mitchell said. “I was there four years ago and went down to the school. Neal grabbed a torch and in minutes, he was welding. At 80 years old, he could do techniques that 30-year-olds couldn’t match his skill level.”

Grover’s relationship with the school began when he returned from active duty in the infantry.

“I didn’t have a car, didn’t have any money, didn’t have any education so I enrolled at Salt Lake Area Vocational School at 431 South 600 East,” he said. “It’s reputation was, ‘If you want to see the bad asses, go to the vocational school.’ But I wanted to learn how to build and customize a car. I was awarded a scholarship my second year. It was $86 for a full ride.”

In 1960, Grover (originally from Holladay) earned his certificate of accomplishment from the school then known as Salt Lake Trade Technical Institute. He served on its automotive advisory committee and became an instructor for a salary of $575 per month.

“That included us cleaning the bathroom and the shop,” he remembered.

Grover taught classes for the Manpower Development and Training Act of 1962, a program “that Kennedy put together to train the guys coming back from the service in the trades and the hardcore unemployable. There were some rough guys in that class,” he said.

Technology and equipment were rudimentary.

“We put the car on jigs and held it in position while it was welded,” he said. “We had little technology to work with and the tools we used were handmade and primitive.”

He also ran his own shop, Grover’s Body and Fender Repair.

“We’d paint the whole car for 80 bucks.

That’s when gasoline was 28 cents per gallon,” he said.

By Julie Slama | j.slama@mycityjournals.com tomize his own cars, including a 1962 metallic midnight blue Corvette, which he sold for $1,800 and gave his dad the money. Even today, Grover has his shop set up in his garage in Holladay.

Mitchell remembered, “His command of the tools he has is unmatched. When you see somebody like Mr. Grover know what he’s doing, it doesn’t look the same as others who are just getting by.”

Grover taught the Vocational Improvement Program at the downtown campus. In 1967, the school, then known as Utah Tech, moved most programs to its current Redwood Campus. Grover followed one year later when the automotive trades center building was completed.

“I saw that building go up in 1968, and I saw it go down,” Grover said, in reference to the automotive building being torn down in 2010 after the program moved to the Larry H. Miller Campus in Sandy in 2001.

After the completion of Redwood automotive building, the school added an associate degree in applied science in auto collision repair and refinishing. Grover was the first to receive that distinction.

In the 1970s, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree in trade and industrial education from Utah State University.

Grover continued to teach collision repair, sharing his students with the paint instructor, Chuck Spainhower.

“I enjoyed working with Neal and Chuck,” said Larry Barlage, who was hired

by Grover in 1983 and worked beside him for decades. “Many times, you’d see Neal bring his students into the paint shop to see something special before and after it was painted.

Chuck would do the same thing with the paint students showing them something in Neal’s class. They worked together as a team.”

The bond of the instructors wasn’t lost on their students.

“I think of them as the dynamic duo.

They did everything very well together,” Mitchell said.

Pete Hoffman admired his instructors.

“Neal has been my mentor and friend since early ’80s and Chuck was equally an amazing person,” he said. “They were like Tom and Jerry. There was a connection between them; they melded together.”

The two instructors educated about 150 Japanese students every summer in the 1990s.

“They came here wanting to learn automotive skills, so we’d find host homes around the college for them to stay and I taught welding and Chuck taught them paint,” Grover said about his late colleague and friend.

Mitchell said the program was amazing.

“It seems unbelievable that this school in Japan sent their students to a specific university, a two-year college in Utah for training and then, Mr. Grover and Mr. Spainhower

trained the students through an interpreter. It was remarkable,” he said.

Grover taught ICAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair) for decades. Amongst his numerous career awards, he received the ICAR Founders Award for the region and was inducted into its hall of fame.

“Back in 1979, we had the Detroit Iron.

Our cars were selling, but there was no technology going into. The Europeans and Japanese had their cars, and they had a repair manual to follow. We had nothing. So, we got together and came up with ICAR. The idea was to train people on the curriculum that was necessary to repair a car. Now, it’s specific to the car,” he said, adding that there are more than 100 online ICAR classes. “Back then, we’d have all the parts, there would be a blueprint for it, and everything could be very specific to the way the car was designed.”

Hoffman also instructed ICAR. “Neal was an ICAR instructor at the concept of it and he got me into teaching. It’s been amazing to see ICAR evolve. Early on, he’d set up a slide carousel that would ding when it was time to advance the slides. One of his famous sayings before ICAR classes, was, ‘It’s time for The Gong Show.’ He has a wry sense of humor. He comes up with things off the cuff; his timing is impeccable.”

Barlage learned from Grover that humor is necessary in teaching.

“Neal can make a bad situation better and laugh along the way. I changed my teaching to model that after him. When I get a laugh or two in the beginning of the class, everything goes smoother,” he said.

Mitchell said Grover interjected humor in class, but he also could take a joke.

“My first year, I went to his house with Oreo cookies and put them all over his car.

When he came into class, I joked about him being late. He was eating an Oreo cookie, saying he went out to breakfast. For his 80th birthday, we went to his house and did the same thing. He still laughed at it,” he said, adding Grover always wore his white shop coat at school. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he wears his coat around his house.”

While instructing full time, Grover guided students to their potential, helping many become state and national Skills USA/VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) winners.

“It was more hands-on than it is now.

They don’t do stuff today like we did back then. You had to be a metal artist,” Grover said.

Hoffman, who placed second at state, joined Grover when SLCC student Joey Hatch won VICA nationals.

“That was one of the biggest experiences I’ve ever experienced. Joey was such a good learner and Neal put so much effort into teaching him to do things properly,” he said.

Grover said that was his goal.

“My biggest challenge is helping kids fulfill their potential, to give them everything they needed to be successful. I taught every kid like the kid was mine,” he said.

Barlage said Grover often worked individually with students.

“Neal would take one or two students if they were having trouble doing something and he’d work on the problem to get the students up to industry standards, just polishing the rough spots. He got everybody to do their best. If students would say, ‘Hey, we messed up; What are we going to do?’ He’d go through a repair procedure with them and use it as a teaching experience so the whole class learned,” he said.

Hoffman remembers asking Grover for help.

“Neal always pushed you a little when you asked for help. He wouldn’t step in and take over the repair. He explained it and let you work it. If things started to go wrong, he’d say, ‘Get back to the basics.’ I used that through my whole career,” he said.

Grover said the students are his favorite part of teaching.

“I was with a bunch of kids, six hours every day for nine months. There’s an association there. If one kid is missing, that part of the recipe is gone. Everybody brought a piece of personality into class,” he said.

Mitchell came to the school from Chicago.

“Before I went back after my first year, the body and paint classes got together for a huge barbecue. I learned Mr. Grover could be strict on teaching and discipline, but there’s room to enjoy the day. He taught us to balance those two things. If it wasn’t him, I’m not sure that after the first year, I would have gone back. I made that connection with is imperative to being engaged. To this day, it’s 1,400 miles from Chicago at Salt Lake, but he’s still like a father,” he said.

It’s something Hoffman learned as well.

“Neal taught me the reward of being able to do what you like and being happy while making a good living and to enjoy it with others,” he said.

Grover said teaching “has been a great trip.”

“I taught all kinds of people and made all kinds of friends. I dearly love all those guys. We’re family,” he said. “I wanted to be a body man; teaching wasn’t my goal. But, it sure worked out for me.” l

Managing Grief in the Holidays

olidays in grief can be particularly challenging with familiar and sentimental sights, sounds, and smells reminding us our loved one is not here. Because this period of the year is built around relationships, a death in the family can make these weeks very difficult. But rather than attempt to just “grope our way” through these special days, there are ways to grow personally through the holidays as grief becomes transformative for us.

Saying goodbye to a loved one is anything but easy, especially if well-meaning friends and family members expect you to just “get on with your life.” Allow time and space for grieving and crying this holiday season. Keeping a journal can provide a vital opportunity for reflection during the holidays. These weeks will not be the same as before because of the “empty chair” at the table so the pain is inevitable.

A list of favorite holiday activities might be quite lengthy but make that list anyway.

The list might include many holiday traditions such when the house is decorated, when and where worship takes place, and in whose home the family meals are shared. Though it is impossible to do everything “just like when Mom was here,” you can evaluate what you do for the holidays and determine, with your family’s help, which of those traditions you want to preserve.

In evaluating holiday traditions, consider creating something new.

Lighting a special candle, purchasing a unique holiday decoration, providing gifts to a needy family, or hosting an international student can become meaningful holiday traditions.

Well-meaning friends or family may want you to attend parties and gatherings, hoping to “cheer you up” but take control of your schedule and do only as much celebrating as you feel ready to do. Choosing which events to participate in acknowledges that grief is a tiring experience. Even under the best of circumstances, holidays can be taxing so attempting to attend every event, party, or celebration may bring about total exhaustion. Instead, say “no” to some well-intentioned invitations.

Simply remind friends, “My energy level hasn’t returned to where it was before he died; thank you for understanding my need to decline.”

Pay close attention to physical well-being, too. Adequate rest, good nutrition, and moderate exercise is essential for the grief process. Lean meats with fresh fruits and vegetables are better choices than sugar- and fat-laden treats. If your health care provider approves, a brisk walk or other moderate exercise can help you feel better physically and emotionally. And eating a healthy diet coupled with moderate exercise is a remedy for insomnia for many mourners.

Be sure to consider the spiritual aspects of life, too. Because holidays have spiritual roots make sure to include time for worship and reflection during this period.

Volunteering to help others or making a memorial contribution is a meaningful way to put feet to faith during the holiday season.

While it is inevitable to face pain at the holidays, following these suggestions can help bereaved individuals and families find transformative growth during this special season of the year.

ix Canyons School District schools recently got a helping hand from United Way volunteers.

As part of United Way of Salt Lake’s Day of Caring, 33 projects in Salt Lake and Davis counties were beneficiaries over several weeks, said Roni Scheidler, United Way of Salt Lake volunteer engagement director.

“Post-COVID, we learned it’s better, especially for our schools, to give them flexibility on the date as we work to help with what’s needed,” she said.

East Midvale and Copperview elementaries were on board early in the school year.

In late August, M.A. Mortenson Construction and Engineering volunteers joined forces with the Utah STEM Action Center at East Midvale to work with preschoolers and kindergartners learning math games.

At Copperview, CHG Healthcare volunteers reassembled the Cougar Exchange Clothing Closet by helping with the closet’s shelving and sorting clothes for students in need.

In September, Midvalley students listened to O.C. Tanner volunteers read “There’s Only One You” by Kathryn Heling before helping students create a school rock garden. Each class was given a copy of the

rhyming picture book.

In early October, a portion of Midvale Elementary’s blacktop was transformed by Jacobsen Construction into pits to play GaGa ball, a variation of dodge ball. The volunteers also refurbished the school’s Little Free Library and restocked student emergency kits.

Next door at Midvale Middle, Dominion Energy volunteers worked alongside students on the upkeep of the campus grounds, updating kits and writing thank-you notes to area emergency personnel.

o summarize the year for the Alta girls soccer team, one might say it was a perfectly “even” season.

The Hawks were 9-9 overall and 6-6 in Region 6, good enough for fifth place in the seven-team league. In the Class 5A state tournament, the Hawks were 1-1, winning in the first round at home before losing in round two.

There was a lot to like about the season for Hawk players, coaches and fans—as well as thing that didn’t go so well.

Ultimately, Alta’s season came to an end at the hands of a challenging opponent: second-seeded Clearfield. Playing on the road in the second round on Oct. 10, Alta lost 6-1.

The game started off fine for the Hawks, as they trailed just 2-1 at the break. Lizzy Cowdell scored a goal off an assist from Lilly Brimley, leaving the team within striking distance of upsetting the Falcons.

But the second half was one Alta would like to forget. Clearfield erupted for four goals after halftime to win going away.

The second-round loss was an almost exact reverse replica of the team’s first-round victory. In that contest, played at home on Oct. 5, Alta routed Region 4’s West Jordan 6-0. The Hawks were up 2-0 at halftime; however, just as Clearfield would do to them

five days later, the Hawks had four goals in the second half. The offensive explosion involved multiple players, with seniors Kate Heaton and Erica Harkness each scoring twice. Heaton and Cowdell had goals as well, and five different players registered assists, including Harkness.

This was the fifth year in a row that Alta lost in the second round of the playoffs.

In the regular season, Alta had close games and was also on both ends of blowouts.

The Hawks lost to Olympus 5-1 on Sept. 14 and fell to Skyline 6-1 on Aug. 28 and 5-0 on Sept. 21. But Alta also crushed Highland 7-0 on Aug. 14 and West 7-1 on Sept. 6. The Hawks posted five shutouts this season, with goalie Biz Vietti getting the credit. Alta outscored its opponents 44-41 on the year and 30-27 in region play.

Several players got into the act offensively this season. Cowdell paced the Hawks with 11 goals. She also had three assists. Natalie Abba had nine goals and an assist, while Heaton had seven goals and two assists.

Andie Anderson, just a sophomore, had five goals. Leading the team in assists was senior Emily Dachenhausen.

Alta loses seven seniors, but some talented players will come back in 2024. l

Hello Sandy Friends, What wakes you up every morning? Is it the sun? Your cell phone alarm? The morning news? An energetic child?

There’s nothing that affects the tone of the day like those first few moments… which, if we’re lucky, aren’t on the wrong side of the bed. My day begins with a walk to the barn. The horses are at the fence waiting for their morning feeding and greet me with ears perched forward and an anxious nicker as their warm breath puffs through the crisp morning air.

This is usually my first conversation of the day. Within just a few steps, I see the magnificent Wasatch mountains to the east, smell the clean air, and greet the animals. It’s a daily reminder of how fortunate I am to live in Sandy.

Our Public Utilities department was ready. We had strategically secured sandbags and temporary “muscle walls” to divert water. We worked directly with at-risk neighborhoods to place these resources. We cleaned debris from creek beds and monitored key sites daily – even hourly if needed. While we did have some individualized incidents which we immediately addressed, we avoided a city-wide catastrophe because our team, working with our residents, was prepared.

Roads, Bridges, and Trails

That record snowpack impacted us all. Some snowstorms were relentless. Our plow drivers were out 24/7 clearing streets. Our Parks Department was also clearing snow in parks and on sidewalks. When the snow was gone, the potholes were patched. When “hot patch” materials were unavailable, we used temporary patches, then went back to these sites to fill or repaved the damaged streets.

As soon as the plows came off, the trucks were back in our neighborhoods removing bulk waste, something our city uniquely provides to residents.

Public Safety

As we contemplate the things that enrich our lives each November, I thank you, our Sandy City residents for making this place so special. I also appreciate a fabulous team that works passionately to provide quality services each day. Here’s just a snapshot of the groups who deliver the valuable city services we rely on these valuable resources.

Water and Utilities

Last winter, we received more than 900 inches of snowpack – a record – and spring brought a threat of severe I S S U E # 109

Over the last year, we beefed up our emergency response capability. By moving from a 2-person to a 3-person crew on each fire call, we can help victims faster.

Immediately, lives were saved. Now, with community support, we plan to move our headquarters to a new Fire Station 31 which will accommodate a larger staff and improve response time even further. Station 31 will be in the heart of downtown Sandy, the center for entertainment, sporting events, conventions, and highoccupancy housing. (Find more information about the G.O. Bond in this newsletter.)

Speaking of public safety, Sandy City saw a decrease in serious crime over the last year. Our award-winning police officers are determined to keep our neighborhoods safe.

Economic Development

Our city is working closely with business owners in Sandy to promote a growth in sales and strengthen the local tax base. This year we launched our Business Connect program, sharing the amazing services and products you’ll find right here in our community. We encourage people to buy close to home. Financial Health

Our city has earned and maintained a AAA bond rating.

This makes us eligible for the lowest interest rates on city projects due to a healthy economy, a well-managed budget, and strong management.

Community Events

If you’ve attended any of the great city events recently, you’ll know that they’re bigger and better than ever. People are coming in droves to events like our Balloon Glow and drone show, our Heritage Festival and Horse Parade, and the huge 4th of July Festival and fireworks display. It was fantastic to come together. Make sure you plan to join us soon for Light Up the Cairns and the arrival of Santa Claus!

I’m reminded of a quote by American writer William Arthur Ward which is very appropriate for the season.

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” I consider living in this community, surrounded by beauty, wonderful people, excellent services, and a great team as one of the best gifts ever and I, for one, am VERY grateful. Happy Thanksgiving Sandy.

Firefighters’ living quarters are not up to code and have chronic problems with plumbing. The building is not ADA compliant for firefighters or the public and it is too small for a growing city to support residents’ calls for service. It would be a better investment for the City to build a new fire station that addresses modern-day emergency needs and anticipated future growth of the fire department rather than try and repair or remodel the existing deteriorating building where space is limited.

Better Response Time: Sandy City’s overall emergency response will improve with a new facility that accommodates additional personnel and properly houses emergency equipment.

Relocating the station away from a railroad crossing and light rail lines and into the City’s downtown will significantly improve response times.

Accounts for Growth: Fire Station 31 is Sandy City Fire’s busiest station, with the most call volume demand of all City fire stations. As the Fire Department Headquarters, that volume is expected to increase capacity demands.

The new Fire Station 31 will be built to account for current and future growth thereby minimizing the City’s need to remodel the Department’s headquarters in the coming years and adding additional debt to residents. The new fire station will accommodate additional emergency response resources such as a second fire truck and additional personnel which will be necessary in the future.

The existing Fire Station 31 is unable to accommodate the larger fire engines that are needed in the Cairns District (downtown Sandy). The new station will be designed to accommodate longer, taller, and more agile ladder trucks.

Centralized Location: City owned property is designated for construction of the new fire station in the City’s downtown Cairns District, the heart of new business, mixed residential and commercial uses, and large-scale sporting events and entertainment venues.

Top Priority: The mayor, city council, and City department heads have identified Fire Station 31 as the City’s top building need.

Sandy City Planning Division Who we are and what we do.

The Planning Division is where the vision of the City’s future is crafted and carried forward. It is where the big ideas start to become a reality though development. The City puts a lot of effort into working with residents and stakeholders to create a longlasting vision for the future. This includes maintaining a General Plan for the City that includes goals and policies, as well as several Area Master Plans that work in supporting these goals and policies in more concentrated geographical locations. We work with the development community who will build out what the city has envisioned through those future planning efforts. Those ideas start to become reality with the assistance of our staff. We spend a considerable amount of time and effort in assisting in all aspects of development including large commercial projects, residential additions or accessory buildings and uses, and signage.

Sandy City Code Enforcement Corner The Sandy City Code Enforcement Team would like to remind residents of two codes related to the removal of trash and waste (Title 19 of the City Code). Code Enforcement responds to numerous calls throughout the year related to this type of complaint.

Sec. 19-4-2 Removal of Waste Required No person owning or occupying any building, lot or premises in Sandy City shall suffer, allow or permit to collect and remain upon said lot or premises any garbage and/or rubbish, for a period of more than one week.

Sec. 19-5-1 Storage of Refuse Prohibited (a) No person, firm or corporation shall deposit, store, maintain, collect, or permit the storage, deposit, maintenance or collection of any junk, junk vehicles, or rubbish, on his own property or any property he or they own or use under his or their control, or in any other place within the City, City street and alley or right-of-way or otherwise, unless expressly provided by law. (b) Any person, firm or corporation violating the provisions of this section shall, after notification of said violation by the City, remove, or cause to be removed, any junk, junk vehicles, and rubbish or have the same placed in an adequate enclosure or building, and in the event of failure he or they shall be deemed guilty of violating the provisions of this section. (c) The fact that such premises are rented or leased by the owner to another party shall not relieve said owner from the responsibilities herein created.

Quick Tips: Seasonal Theft As we head into the colder months of autumn and the quickly approaching holiday season, we would like to remind the residents of Sandy City of some quick tips. During the colder months and through the winter, our officers tend to see a slight increase in vehicle thefts. The reason for this increase is directly related to unattended vehicles warming up. People tend to believe that letting their vehicle idle for 15 minutes is the best way to warm their vehicle, including the cabin of the vehicle. However, it is proven (go ask your mechanic) the fastest way to warm your vehicle is by driving it.

During the months of November and December we all increase our amount of shopping, both online, and in person. We want to remind our residents during this time that thieves tend to, for a lack of better terms, “up their game”. When you are out shopping don’t leave shopping bags in your vehicle in plain sight. This is an invite to thieves to break into your vehicle. While shopping online, be mindful of your deliveries to your home.

A good idea in to track your purchase and be able to anticipate your delivery. So called “porch pirates” are out roaming the neighborhoods simply looking for packages on your doorstep. Mail theft, which also includes packages delivered to your doorstep, is a felony. If you happen to notice any suspicious activity you believe to be mail or package thefts, please contact Sandy Police.

Quick Tips from Sandy City Fleet Management: Pre-winter Vehicle Preparation As we transition to winter, Sandy City Fleet Management recommends several things you can do right now to ensure your car operates successfully throughout the winter months.

Check your tire pressure and tread depth. Good tires are the key to staying on the road and keeping safe when the weather is questionable, and snow and ice are falling from the sky. You can do your part to ensure your tires are in good shape with just a few simple steps.

First, check your tire pressure with a simple gauge sold at any auto supply store. You should also make sure your tires have appropriate amounts of tread on them.

The simple test is the “Lincoln test” – just insert a penny into your tire’s tread with the top of Lincoln’s head pointing inward toward the tire. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, you need to replace the tire before winter weather begins. You may also want to consider installing winter tires before the season begins, as they will make all the difference when it comes to getting around.

Check your engine antifreeze levels. Antifreeze keeps your engine from freezing during those extremely cold days. You can also directly check your antifreeze levels by following the instructions in your car’s manual. Adding more antifreeze is very simple, if you need to do it.

Use winter windshield wiper fluid. Not all windshield wiper fluid is the same. Ordinary fluid that I S S U E # 109

you use in the spring, summer and fall often becomes worse than useless in the winter, as it freezes quickly upon contact with your windshield.

Check your engine oil level and your battery. Low oil levels will damage your engine and season changes will drain weak batteries and leave you stranded in your car. If you have an old battery, have it tested at a local auto parts supply store.

Put a “winter supply” box in your car. Having a box full of winter supplies in your trunk can make all the difference when something goes wrong while traveling on a cold winter day. Here is a quick list of items you should include in that box: flashlight, first-aid kit, blankets, gloves, a bag of sand (for traction), ice scraper, some high-energy snacks (like nuts or jerky), water, and a shovel for digging out of deep snow.

All these items are useful for operating a motor vehicle in the winter months. During winter weather driving, remember to slow down and increase your following distance.

RECYCLE RIGHT EVERY DAY – What You Put in the Bin Matters America Recycles Day is a nationally recognized day devoted to encouraging Americans to both recycle and buy recycled products. Celebrated annually on November 15, this year’s nationwide theme is “creative innovation”.

When it comes to recycling, WM reminds us to never get creative about what you put into recycling. The best way to support the success of Sandy City’s recycling program is for each of us to be proponents for clean recycling. Stick to the rules of what is accepted in our curbside recycling program. Here in town that means recycle only clean cardboard, paper, metal food and beverage cans and plastic bottles and containers. Also remember to place recyclables loosely and directly into carts, never bag up materials. If you want to get creative, find proactive ways to reduce and reuse in addition to recycling.

As for the recycling skeptics out there, let it be known that recycling truly does make a difference. Last year Utahans recycled approximately 51,000 tons of material with WM of Utah. Whether you recycle to divert materials from landfills or to help save natural resources, keep up the important work by recycling every single day.

Did you know: • Every aluminum can you recycle saves enough electricity to run a television for two hours.

• Every ton of paper recycled saves more than 7,000 gallons of water.

• Recycling a steel can saves just under 75% of the energy used to produce it from virgin materials. Recycling ten plastic bottles is enough to make a tee-shirt.

Fundamentally, recycling recovers materials so they can be reused, rather than using new raw materials to make product. For example, aluminum, steel and glass are endlessly recyclable. If you recycle an aluminum beverage can, it is typically back on the shelf as a new can within 45 days.

On average, Americans reportedly produce 4.4 pounds of trash per day. For a two-person household that equates to 1.5 tons of trash annually. That’s a lot of waste. It doesn’t all have to go to the landfill. At least 30 percent of all the trash we produce is recyclable: metal cans, plastic bottles and containers, paper and cardboard. We can make a big difference when we all choose to use our recycling bin.

y the slimmest of ways, the Jordan girls soccer team bowed out of the Class 4A state tournament.

The Beetdiggers, seeded 16th, faced 17th-seeded Provo at home Oct. 5 but came up just short of moving on to the second round, falling in a shootout. Neither team managed a goal in regulation, so the contest extended into two overtime sessions. But the defenses stood tough in those periods too, requiring penalty kicks to decide the winner.

Provo prevailed but making four kicks to Jordan’s three.

Losing in such a fashion is never easy, but the Beetdiggers have plenty to be proud of. Jordan went 7-10 this season and 4-8 in Region 10. It was a big improvement over last year’s 3-13 record when Jordan was a member of Class 5A’s Region 8. In 2021, Jordan lost all 17 of games. This year’s seven

victories was the most for the program since it went 8-6 in 2019.

Jordan scored 31 goals this season, with senior forward Samantha Mayo-Gonzalez leading the way with nine. She had three games of two goals, achieving the feat Aug. 10 against Hunter, Aug. 23 at Tooele and Sept. 18 at home against Tooele. Fellow senior forward Kenzie Colunga had eight goals and four assists, while junior forward Abigail Johansen added five goals and three assists. Senior midfielder Tess Joseph and senior forward Julia Willham each had two goals and four assists this season. Goalie June Joseph, just a freshman, had a solid first year for the Beetdiggers. She was credited with five shutouts. She and her backline teammates also had two other games in which the opponent scored only twice.

Though Jordan still had some

rough patches this season, the improvement was evident. The team also had lopsided, dominant wins, including a 5-0 shutout of Tooele and a 4-1 win at Tooele, as well wins of 6-0 and 4-0 over Hunter and Jordan, respectively, in non-league play. Even against some of the better teams in Region 10, the Beetdiggers were more competitive.

Jordan enjoyed a four-game winning streak early in the season from Aug. 3– Aug. 14, something the program hasn’t seen in four years.

Though Jordan will lose several key members of this year’s squad, there is youth in the program, not to mention a renewal of confidence. A total of nine juniors, 10 sophomore and six freshmen were on this year’s roster, so plenty of players could be back in 2024. l

Salt Lake County won’t be shutting down

W

e’ve all heard the threat of a possible federal government shutdown if Congress can’t get their act together.

A stopgap bill was passed to push the Oct. 1 deadline to Nov. 15. But what will happen on Nov. 15? No one really knows. Here in Salt Lake County, you don’t have to worry about programs not getting funded, budgets not being balanced or debts escalating. Our Salt Lake County Council takes very seriously our charge to ensure a balanced budget will keep the county operating.

October begins the county budget process with the mayor presenting her 2024 budget to the council, setting the stage for a meticulous six-week evaluation by the council. Inaugural middle school unified soccer state tournament met by enthusiastic players, partners, fans

I

t was the first year of Utah’s middle school unified soccer and Jen Morphy was on the sidelines.

She wasn’t one of athlete’s mothers, but rather a mom of a ninth-grade peer tutor, who was assisting the athletes with the ball so they could have the same opportunities to play.

“It’s a really great program, and I love that,” she said. “Through unified sports these kids are getting to do so many things.”

Unified soccer, a program of Special Olympics Utah in partnership with the Utah High School Activities Association, allows student-athletes with and without disabilities to play on the same team.

While the teams are coed and play competitively five versus five on a smaller sized soccer field for two eight-minute halves, the focus is on development of skills, friendship, cooperation and sportsmanship as often players on either team will cheer for one another.

Fourteen teams played in the inaugural state tournament, split in four divisions based upon ability, said Boston Iacobazzi, Unified Champion School’s college-growth coordinator. There were about 150 student-athletes from area middle schools: Mountain Creek, South Jordan, Oquirrh Hills, Joel P. Jensen, West Jordan and Mt. Jordan—as well as from nearby Alpine and Davis school districts.

“They had a great time and loved it,” he said. “It was really cool as some of them had never played soccer before. Some were super pumped to get to wear uniforms with their school’s name on it.”

Mountain Creek teacher Karlee English said that was true of her players, who were coached by volunteer Hannah Swett.

“We have worked hard for weeks in preparation for the tournament,” she said.

“Most of the kids had never even played soccer before this. By the time the tournament came most of the students understood the game and really enjoyed playing soccer.

Most of all, there was a real camaraderie between the athletes and the peers they were playing with. I actually had to do a drawing for peer tutors because so many students wanted to do it.”

Morphy’s son, Dane, has been a middle school partner athlete in unified basketball, which was introduced last winter, and with unified golf, which was new in spring 2022.

“My older daughter was a peer tutor for two years; she would say, ‘they need friends too.’ Dane knew all these kids through his sister, so he became a peer tutor and absolutely loves it. My younger daughter wants to be a peer tutor next year,” Morphy said.

As well as being a parent and a fan, Morphy also is Mountain Creek Middle School’s PTA president.

“We want opportunities to include all our students, like this. We have one kid in

their class who has seizures; half of his body doesn’t work how it’s supposed to. Last year, he was so good at basketball. It was fun to see him be able to do these things in a setting that allows him to excel. With soccer, our peer tutors would shag a ball and it goes right to one of the kids in the class to dribble back up the field. Our school had two teams and what’s fun about that is you have an entire sideline cheering you on. It’s not just parents, but you have all your peers there, so it feels even bigger,” she said.

When teams scored, Morphy said, “The kids would get so excited and then the peers were happy for them and everybody on the field comes in with high-fives and hugs. The sidelines were jumping up and down. They’re so happy and love being a part of all of it.”

English said the score at the end wasn’t what was important.

“Honestly, the highlight for me was watching a young man and his peer on the opposing team (South Jordan) who were very enthusiastic in working the ball down the field and the athlete ended up getting the goal. It was so much fun to watch both teams cheer this young athlete on. It wasn’t about who won the game; it was celebrating as one in this victory for this young man as he scored. The beauty in this moment wasn’t directed by any adult to cheer for this young athlete; it just happened spontaneously,” she said.

At the same time as the middle school tournament, Iacobazzi also was overseeing 54 unified high school teams in the state playoffs.

“I’d love to get more middle schools involved and have high school soccer players help with their training. Ideally, we’d like each district to run its own middle school league then we hold one state event with teams from all the districts across the state,” he said.

Morphy said the tournament was a huge event.

“The whole community was there together—so many parents, families and so many games going on. It was fun because at Mountain Creek, it’s a tight group. Some of our students could see their friends who had gone on to high school and give them hugs and they’d cheer each other as they played,” she said.

Iacobazzi was planning surprise visits to present the medals to teams at their schools in early November.

Consumer resilience suggests solid holiday shopping season

T

he hustle and bustle of the holiday season generates a flurry of economic activity, from hiring to retail spending to demand for travel and services. Holiday sales are also a barometer of how the economy is doing locally and nationally.

As we head into the winter holidays, here are several factors impacting the holiday shopping outlook: Utahns are feeling merrier about the economy compared to a year ago. Consumer sentiment rose to 76.3 in September, as measured by the University of Utah’s Kem C. Gardner Institute’s Survey of Utah Consumers. That’s up from 63.9 in September 2022. Consumer confidence has also improved nationally in the comparable University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index. Higher confidence often leads to increased spending.

Inflation is slowing but still too high. Despite the gradual slowdown in price growth over the past year, a third of shoppers expect inflation to influence the way they shop during the 2023 holidays, according to Bankrate’s 2023 Holiday Shopping Survey. Annual inflation slowed to 3.7% in September, still above the Federal Reserve’s target rate of 2% inflation.

Wage growth has boosted purchasing power. Wage growth has been outpacing inflation since May. While this will help ease some families’ holiday budgets, household

income has yet to fully recover the purchasing power lost to inflation in recent years. Utah’s total personal income, the sum of income earned by all Utahns in the state, grew by 4.5% in the second quarter of 2023, compared to 4.3% nationally, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Retail spending may soften. After stronger-than-expected consumer spending over the summer, a recent Federal Reserve report suggests retail spending might be slowing, particularly on non-essential items. “Consumers may have exhausted their savings and are now relying on borrowing to support spending,” according to the Federal Reserve’s latest Beige Book report. However, that doesn’t mean consumers will stop spending. Bain & Company has projected 3% growth in U.S. retail sales during the win-

ter holiday season. Meanwhile, Deloitte’s annual holiday retail forecast predicts sales will increase by as much as 4.6% this holiday season. Most of that growth will come from online sales.

Household budgets are still tight. Nearly 40% of shoppers nationally planned to start this year’s holiday shopping earlier than normal, according to a National Retail Federation survey. This is not necessarily to get their shopping done early, but rather to distribute the financial cost across the entire season. Just over a quarter (27%) of U.S. holiday shoppers have money set aside for this holiday shopping season, according to Bankrate.

Employment is strong. U.S. employers added 336,000 jobs in September, far surpassing expectations, while the unemployment rate remained at a low 3.8%. Utah’s job market continues to show strength, gaining 35,200 jobs in September, with unemployment at a very low 2.6%.

Because a higher employment rate correlates with higher spending, the strong job market is good news for local retailers who get a boost from holiday sales.

Lags in economic data and outside factors influencing consumer behavior make retail sales hard to predict.

Uncertainty from global conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine could impact the holiday retail outlook. But current signs of a resilient consumer point to a solid holiday shopping season. l

Hark! the Herald Angels Scream

I

t was the Peri Kinder Cabbage Patch Kid Life and Laughter frenzy of '83 and parents had lost their dang minds. I was a young mother and didn’t think my 6-month-old daughter needed the trendy toy of the year, but watching crowds of people attack each other over a doll was inconceivable.

TV news showed Black Friday sales where hundreds of loving parents trampled their friends and neighbors to get one of the elusive Cabbage Patch dolls. I understand wanting to find the perfect present, but having mom arrested the day after Thanksgiving because she shot a store employee with a crossbow doesn’t exactly ring in the holidays.

Each year brought a new toy so necessary and valuable that people went shopping armed with baseball bats and pepper spray to ensure they got the Furby, Beanie Babies, Tickle Me Elmo or Teddy Ruxpin for their child who already had too many toys.

Shoppers expected riots, looting, broken bones and black eyes for every Black Friday sale. News reporters showed videos of chaos, pandemonium and anarchy. If you didn’t get a concussion while saving on bath towels, was it even Black Friday?

I didn’t often participate in Black Friday, although I once waited outside Toys R Us at 5 a.m., in freezing temperatures,

to save $50 on a Barbie Dreamhouse. My early-morning shopping adventures ended when a full-grown adult stole my 8-year-old daughter’s promotional football at Mervyn’s.

If I wanted to experience holiday anxiety, panic and frustration, I didn’t need to shop the Black Friday sales. I could feel all that stress in the comfort of my own home. But now, if there was a Black Friday sale on gas, gluten-free cake mixes or bags of dog food I’d definitely get up at 4 a.m.

Today, Black Friday just isn’t the same. Instead of waiting in line for hours while your toes freeze, people just turn on their phones and cybershop until their fingers bleed. There’s no frenzy, bedlam, fracas, turmoil or mayhem. Not even a hullabaloo. Just scrolling and clicking. Like every other day.

Americans are a wacky bunch. We spend Thanksgiving Day offering appreciation for our abundance and then eat until our livers explode. By midnight, gratitude is over and it’s time to spend until our credit cards warp. Within hours of Thanksgiving dinner, we’re in combat-mode, ready for holiday shopping.

It’s so on-brand for Americans.

Buddhists teach about a realm of hungry ghosts who have large stomachs but tiny mouths. They are tormented by unrelenting cravings that can never be satisfied. A student once asked Buddhist teacher and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh, “What is it like in the realm of hungry ghosts?” he answered, “America.”

Ouch. But accurate.

Because it’s not just Black Friday anymore. It’s Small Business Saturday, Shell Out Sunday, Cyber Monday, TakeAll-My-Money Tuesday and What-Did-I-Even-Buy Wednesday. Social media platforms taunt us with shiny items that

might ease the relentless craving for more. But only for a moment.

Back in 1983, I never imagined how the world would change in 40 years. I thought we’d go on beating each other up for toys until the end of time. I never dreamed we’d be buying holiday gifts online, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on our phones or hanging Christmas lights that could be controlled through an app.

I probably wondered if we’d ever learn that violence isn’t the best way to start the holiday season. Especially a holiday with the catchphrase, “Peace on Earth, goodwill toward men.”

Let’s face it, holiday shopping will always be a jungle.
