n Sept. 20, the Sandy City Council voted to allocate a total of $11 million to take the next steps for three public buildings in Sandy.

The resolution passed with a margin of 6 to 1. Prior to voting, an amendment was added to declare the city’s intention to pledge future funds toward replacing Fire Station 31 as well as rebuilding or remodeling Alta Canyon Sports Center.

Four million dollars were set aside for the design process of those buildings—$1 million for the fire station and $3 million for the ACSC. Seven million will go toward phase 2 construction of a new public works building.

During the public hearing nine residents spoke passionately about the need to prioritize public safety over recreation.

“I would hope we communicated this, but clearly based on comments tonight we did not communicate that adequately,” said Councilmember Marci Houseman. “The resolution tonight does not prioritize one project. It prioritizes three. The resolution tonight sets aside money for completing public works phase II, which is an urgent need and we all agree on that. It also sets aside money to more deeply explore the needs of Fire Station 31 so that we can fully understand the costs, the location and the design of Fire Station

31, which we can all agree is a huge priority.”

She went on to say that the resolution will give the council a year to explore the costs and how to pay for them.

“I disagree with the premise that we are not protecting our residents,” Houseman said. “We do protect our residents. I feel like there’s been some misunderstandings that this resolution is funding Alta Canyon and not doing anything about the

Make-A-Wish Utah and BD grants a young girl’s wish

M

illy is a 9 year old who loves science, bugs, dinosaurs, volcanoes and exploring the world. As a second-grader, she was diagnosed with a nervous system disorder but it hasn’t slowed her down.

This fall, Make-A-Wish Utah and BD Sandy threw a tropical-themed proclamation party to surprise Milly with the granting of a wish — a family trip to Hawaii. The party at the BD Sandy office (9450 State St.) was organized by the BD women’s initiative network and featured games, treats and volcano experiments for Milly’s friends and family members.

BD is one of the largest global medical technology companies in the world, with 65,000 employees worldwide. The company has partnered with Utah’s Make-A-Wish for three years.

“We pride ourselves on contributing and making meaningful relationships with the community in which we work and serve,” said Jamie Kinzer, BD vice president of integrated supply chain for vascular access devices. “We have contributed more than $70,000 in the last two years for local charity events.

We’re really proud of that and just want to give back because this is where we live, too.”

Milly, a Sandy resident and student at American Prep Academy, submitted her dream to Make-A-Wish three years ago. She asked for the chance to sing with Pink but COVID canceled those plans. Make-A-Wish volunteers helped her select a second option, which was the trip to Hawaii.

“The ‘Jurassic Park’ movies were made [in Hawaii] and I want to see all the volcanoes,” Milly said, after learning her wish had been granted. “I’m so excited.”

For more than 40 years, Make-A-Wish has been granting wishes to children with critical illnesses or life threatening conditions.

velopment officer responsible for public partnerships, loves the proclamation ceremonies where the children learn which wish they’ll receive. In the last year, Make-A-Wish Utah granted 213 wishes to children in the state and 227 kids are still waiting for their wish to come true.

“Whenever a child wishes for a travel wish, we send the child and both parents and every sibling under the age of 18. We recognize that the impact of a critical illness diagnosis affects the entire family,” Ehrmann said.

“The entire family is affected by the child’s recovery journey and treatment journey, not just our kids.”

It costs an average of $6,000 to grant one child’s wish and 80% of wishes made are for travel destinations. About 70% of travel wishes include going to a Disney Park. Since its inception in 1985, Make-A-Wish Utah has granted 4,200 wishes. Nationally, more than 500,000 children have been granted a wish through the organization.

retention and it can increase customer retention. Everybody likes to be connected to a brand that’s doing well and doing great things in the world,” Ehrmann said. “We’re entirely funded by private and corporate donations.

BD Medical has pulled together an employee giving campaign and all of the employees are helping raise money to grant one wish.”

Once the family arrives in Hawaii, the local Make-A-Wish chapter will take over the wish to make sure the family gets the best experience possible. With donations, in-kind

Park upgrades include resurfaced pickleball courts and water-wise landscaping

O

n a sunny evening in September, the Sandy City Council took a tour of recreation facilities and parks. They saw what upgrades are being done to help residents stay active while conserving resources.

According to its website, the Sandy Parks Department is implementing conservation practices like smart controllers, zone checks and regular water audits to reduce overall water consumption by 10%. Smart irrigation controllers adjust watering schedules in relation to weather, evaporation, and plant water use — instead of a timer. This means you’re less likely to see sprinklers operating in the rain.

With just one water-wise project, Sandy City saved 400,000 gallons of water last year. Thirsty grass was replaced with trees and shrubs in the median between the north and southbound lanes on 1300 East between 9400 South and 11000 South. Perennial plants like Russian sage still require water — just less of it. They’re also good for honeybees and other pollinators.

Crescent Park, located at 11150 Vista Way near Crescent View Middle School, also got an upgrade. One section of grass was removed and replaced with a rockscape. Where once there was turf, now there are small rocks and shrubs with some larger boulders that are perfect to lean on.

Just east of the rockscape are newly-resurfaced pickleball and tennis courts.

“No one played on these tennis courts two years ago,” said Dan Medina, the director of parks and recreation for Sandy City.

They were being used that evening. Also packed were the baseball diamonds, where an adult softball league was playing under newly-installed lights. The lights are activated by a button and turn off automatically after a set amount of time, which will use less electricity.

“The LED lights will typically save a minimum of 50% for energy and maintenance cost of the HID lights that we are replacing,” Medina said. “The lights have a warranty and the court won’t need resurfacing again for 1520 years.”

Pickleball is a popular sport that combines elements from tennis, badminton and pingpong. It’s played at a slower pace than tennis, so people of more ages and abilities feel comfortable playing it. Sandy has 17 pickleball courts distributed across Crescent, Dewey Bluth, Alta Canyon and Flat Iron Mesa parks.

Aside from the courts, Sandy’s parks offer a variety of opportunities for sports, including soccer, baseball, basketball and volleyball; as well as other types of recreation, like splash pads and a skate park.

be one park for every 2,000 residents. Seventy-two percent of Sandy residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park, according to The Trust for Public Land, a national parks and land conservation organization. In neighboring Midvale, only 36% of residents live that close to a park.

A network of walking/biking trails is another way for Sandy residents to build recre-

ation into their lives.

In September, Sandy City held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the completed Porter Rockwell Trail. The trail now extends from Pioneer Avenue in Historic Sandy to the Kimballs Lane TRAX Station in Draper. l

That’s what a recent area high school graduate advises secondary students.

Emily Erickson graduated in 2021, but in the last month of her senior year of high school, she wrote the book, “The Art of the A: A Guide to Earning Straight A’s in Middle and High School Without Sacrificing Your Social Life, Sleep Schedule, or Sanity.” She self-published the 300-page book that is available on Amazon.

As a 4.0 grade-point student who took 14 advanced placement classes, earned her associate’s degree while in high school, was named Utah’s business and marketing Sterling Scholar, finished first in her class of 563 students and was involved in seven clubs, Erickson said she was able to do so with eight hours of sleep per night and being able to do activities with friends.

“I found that a lot of the information on the internet isn’t good advice. The people who write it, they haven’t actually gotten straight A’s themselves, or they haven’t actually done it recently, or really understand what it’s like to be a student now,” she said.

“I also feel there’s a lot of books on the market of study tips for college students, but not really for middle and high school students— and not one written by a high schooler for high schoolers and middle schoolers.”

In her book, she addresses the mistaken impression that a student needs to be brilliant to succeed in school.

“There are a lot of misconceptions about what it takes to get straight A’s. A lot of people think that you have to be a genius to get straight A’s and while there’s some level of intelligence that you need, I don’t think you have to be prodigious in any way.

If you’re strategic and you’re organized, and you have an idea for what you’re doing and know how to work effectively, it’s very possible for any student to aim to get A’s,” she said. “The idea that students have to work all day long, be completely obsessed with their studies, have no life outside of school, not have a sleep schedule and be under tremendous amounts of stress is a stereotype which is incorrect and harmful.”

She used her knowledge of being a student today along with her strategies she used to write the book to help others succeed.

“The perspective I wrote the book from is if you’re a student who’s struggling in school, and you ask how you can do better.

The advice people typically give you is study harder, engage more in class or take good notes. Those are OK tips, but they’re kind of poor advice because they don’t ask the central question: what does it really take to earn straight A’s? The answer is really simple. It’s earning a high enough percentage on your assignments, your exams, your essays,

your projects, everything you do in a class, so that at the end of this semester, you have enough points or percentage of points that your grade falls above a certain point cut off for getting an A,” she said.

Erickson said she ensured what she was doing would affect her grade, not just complete busy work.

“I asked myself, ‘How can I put in my time, effort and strategies in a direction that moves me toward that A instead of just saying, ‘take better notes.’ I questioned, ‘Why do we need to take better notes? What is the function of notes, how are they earning points?’ A lot of people will come home, and study and they’ll make their notes pretty,

which doesn’t help get A’s because it’s the assignments that you turn in and are graded on that earns you points. Identifying that is a huge thing,” she said.

With her assignments and tests, she tried to be efficient and effective.

“In the book, I talked about different strategies for different types of assignments.

I go into detail in the book on each type of assignment so like essays, how you plan and write and do those effectively and how you do daily assignments, math homework or just short things,” she said adding that she also shares specific strategies for long-term projects.

“you can succeed and handle things that are coming in when you get into the middle of the school year.”

Even if you read her book at this point in the school year, Erickson has advice.

“Start with making sure you put out any fires,” she said. “Make a list of what needs to be done, and then do what’s worth the highest number of points and due the soonest and then attack it as much as you can. Then refine your systems. Learn organization.”

One section Erickson is especially proud of is a chapter titled, “Creating time out of nowhere.”

“When I was a sophomore, I took five AP classes at the same time. My counselor was like, ‘You’re insane; nobody’s done that.

You’re going to be stressed out of your mind and go crazy’ —and I kind of did at first,” she said, remembering she took even more AP classes her junior year. “Then, I realized there are periods of time throughout the day like when my dad dropped me off for school or was picking me up. I had a 30- to 45-minute window there. I had 30 minutes during lunch, and then we had advisory, which was a 30-minute study hall, and I realized if I used those times, instead of just talking with friends or wandering around having lunch and texting, like everybody does, then I could get two hours of homework time during the day that I never realized existed.

When a student who feels overwhelmed by homework realizes this, it can really help. I made the choice to do homework at those times because I was at school anyway and I found that by finishing what I needed to do at school, I was left with the evenings free.”

Erickson also addresses stress and burnout of high school students.

“If you’re doing school right, stress can be a positive thing; it means you’re doing something that matters. I’d reframe that stress as if I was playing a game to get good grades and trying to learn to move forward in the world to make it fun. It’s a challenge to build mastery. I talk a lot about mindset and dealing with the game and doing it proactively in the book,” she said.

That mindset extended to assignments, and she would see if she could concentrate on them and turn them in the same day.

“I found that the times I was working most intense, were when something was due in 30 minutes. So, there’s the game there; I’d make the strategic game to not procrastinate and get it back to the teachers as if it was due sooner. I remember my English teacher would give out projects and assignments. I had this joke with her that she would finish her lunch and I would hand her my homework before the next period,” she said.

Part of the trick, Erickson said, was to stay organized. She kept her papers and assignments in files at home so she could quickly review assignments or refer to them.

“It’s really helpful to keep track of assignments. I’ve also had times where teachers have missed entering a grade, so I was able to go to my filing cabinet and pull it out

and that really did end up saving my butt a couple of times,” she said.

Especially for high school seniors, she said make sure organization and strategies are in place for assignments “as you may be trying to fill out these college applications or traveling for scholarship interviews. Having the ability to have things on autopilot and just having the systems in place to keep you on track when you have other priorities going on. That’s huge as a senior.”

“The Art of the A” is Erickson’s second book. The current University of Utah student wrote a book about education reform titled “Unlearned: A Student’s Perspective on Bridging the Divide Between Schooling and Educatedness” during the COVID-19 Alta High School closure in 2020.

“The best part of writing this book was just thinking about what I did. It forced me to go back and reflect on everything that I’ve learned all throughout my K through 12 education, about studying and homework and all the strategies and the experiences I had with teachers,” Erickson said. “I realized everything I’ve learned over the years would be lost unless I could share it with someone, maybe a little sixth-grade girl who was like me and really wants to succeed academically in school. Maybe she’s going to find my book and will develop a solid strategy and find inspiration. Just knowing that my experiences may have that positive impact is really cool. It brings things full circle for me.” l

Glacier Hills third-graders learn stewardship lesson by repurposing plastic bottles

I

n Glacier Hills third-grader Lillian Larkin’s backyard, it’s all a flutter.

“It’s all colorful; we have birds that are blue, black, orange, even some with red,” she said.

Classmate Lily Robbins also said “there are lots of birds eating birdseed” in her backyard.

This fall, some house finches, chickadees and woodpeckers may be a little happier, thanks to some Glacier Hills third-graders who repurposed empty plastic bottles to create birdfeeders.

It wasn’t simply coloring a plastic bottle with a marker, adding a bamboo stick for a perch and hanging it in the backyard as a school craft. The birdfeeders tied into a cross-curricular lesson from science and English-language arts curriculum, said thirdgrade teacher Lisa Moon.

“We study the impact humans have on the earth and learn resources available to us and what we can do to have less of an impact on the earth through recycling, reusing and repurposing things,” she said. “We wanted to make that connection. We also read an argu-

mentative text about national parks, should they be closed to outside use or stay the same.

We looked at how we access the parks and the impact we have on it and the importance of wildlife. It reflected back to that standard in science about how humans have an impact on the environment.”

Initially, Moon said the students were all for protecting the wildlife habitat over everything else.

“They’re all about animals at this age, but the more we got into the text and discussion, the more they realized the complexity of the issue,” she said. “They’re learning there are different sides of the story or issue. They were all for the animals, but then I asked them to think about camping, riding an ATV and hiking in the national parks because if it’s all animals, then this could affect your family’s ability to go do things in a park. It did give them a moment to pause and consider the fact that this was not just a question of animals or not the animals, but the fact that these were activities that families also enjoy, so they did see the other side of the coin.”

Moon also said they talked about for

some people, it may be their livelihood.

“We talked about some people wanting access to Sequoia for lumber; it’s their jobs.

We also talked about adding fees for people who want to do certain activities, but then, there was an issue of accessibility and affordability for everyone and that’s what the parks are billed as, the people’s parks. We discussed how it’s more than just a yes or no answer sometimes and you have to see a lot of different sides; it’s not as cut and dried and easy as an answer as they might have thought,” she said.

Even after the discussion, third-grader Scoty Pununu was all for “wanting to keep the parks for the animals. I want to help the birds get food with the bird feeders and make the world a better place. We read about the Sequoias in California and they’re as big as school buses, so I don’t want those to come home and lose all the animals’ homes. I know we can use the wood, but we can get it somewhere other than a national park.”

The school lesson also extended to learning how to organize and write an opinion paper and drawing from the articles they read.

“We discussed then that one of the pur-

poses of the parks is to protect and support different species of animals and so with these bird feeders in our own neighborhoods, we’re helping the wild animals and we’re making these bird feeders out of something that often times are thrown away or recycled,” she said. “It’s a fun way that we can support the purposes of the parks and help with wildlife habitat while giving a second use to the plastic bottles.”

Third-grader Penelope Lochhead was hoping her Gatorade bottle birdfeeder will attract a lot of feathered friends.

“I’m drawing leaves on it so the birds will come to it and not to just a plastic bottle,” she said. “I like animals and want to be a veterinarian when I grow up. I like doing this and learned we need to do what we can to protect our wildlife.”

Moon said it was important that the students were making a connection between what they were learning in class to the real world.

“Any time we can make connections to what they’re seeing and hearing about in their homes and in society, it’s important,” she said. “It gives them relevance to their learning that you can’t get any other way.” l

High school students learn school district’s energy efficiency saves dollars

any of Canyons School District’s schools and campuses are as energy and water efficient as possible, that’s what a group of Hillcrest High students recently learned.

During a recent Earth Club meeting, student members learned about the school district’s water and energy management program, subtitled, “The Business of Saving Taxpayer’s Dollars and Leaving an Impressive Legacy for Future Generations.” Then, they had a hands-on opportunity to discover if there were ways it could be better.

“What I would like is for you to measure how we can retain heat or more efficiently reduce our need for heat in this (STEM) building and then, identify the cheapest upgrades and start finding grants that we can start modifying this building to meet some improved level of efficiency,” Hillcrest Earth Club adviser Jake Flanigan challenged students.

Hillcrest High senior Sofia Moeinvaziri was one of those students.

“It’s been really eye-opening and beneficial to learn not only what we’re doing to become more efficient in our water and energy use, but the why’s and how’s behind it and how we can become more proactive,” she said.

During the presentation, students learned that Canyons’ water efficiency program began in 2016, when District Energy Specialist Chris Eppler introduced the Cal Poly’s auditing water and analyzing precipitation rates program. He predicted, with the help of his staff and student interns, the school district could save about 25 million gallons of water.

“We ended up saving a documented 20 million gallons,” he said. “Our meter was out at a school so we couldn’t document all the water we saved, but I’m very confident we ended up saving more than what we projected.”

The program is designed to water the area to meet plants’ needs, but not waste water through runoff or overspray.

“It’s very straightforward, and it’s actually very simple,” Eppler said. “What we do is go out and document how many sprinkler heads we have, what type of heads they are and what is the precipitation rate and the zone precipitation rate. Then, we’re able to calculate how to operate as efficiently as we possibly can. I would venture to say we may be the only school district doing this and one of the few in the state of Utah. We can predict, based on the summer, how much water we need and show how much we actually use.”

The program began with a grant from a water conservancy district, he said.

“Now the thing is, people say, ‘How much do you save now?’ The savings aren’t as great anymore because we’re watering

the way we’re supposed to, so it’s more of a maintenance level and the savings is just put right back into the program,” he said, adding that there have been circumstances such as rebuilds of schools and an increase of water fees by Sandy City that have factored into the equation.

Even with that, his handful of summer student interns projected water usage in 2020-21 would total more than 113 million gallons for the middle schools alone; however, they were still able to consume less, at 88.5 million. During that same time period, elementary schools used 4 million gallons less than projected as well.

While the high school playing fields are preferred to be green, Eppler said they have reduced water consumption to 65% in other areas, such as the non-playing areas.

“The grounds for children stay in a healthy condition, but we’re sacrificing in other areas to stay within the governor’s parameters,” he said. “We know those big fields consume huge amounts of water and there’s no way of getting around that. But what we try to do is put the correct amount of water in the ground and do that during the less hot times. The amount of watering stays the same, but maybe it’s the frequency and the time of year that change.”

Canyons has been recognized as a Utah Energy Pioneer in 2015 for its leadership and commitment to energy conservation by the Utah Association of Energy Engineers and again in 2017, by Gov. Gary Herbert’s Office of Energy Development as a Utah Energy Pioneer.

Eppler, who is a certified irrigation designer, contractor and auditor as well as an energy engineer, said that his team, including Brandon Wolf, Daniel Bray and Robynn Lefler, have helped Canyons save money in its gas and electricity usage as well.

At a recorded high in 2013-14, Canyons paid $1.29 per square foot for natural gas, electricity, sewer and water. During the 2019-20 (mostly pre-pandemic) year, that same cost was down to 93 cents.

“This doesn’t take into consideration that we’ve increased the size of our buildings by 600,000 square feet (excluding the recent rebuilds of Brighton and Hillcrest high schools, which weren’t completed at that time) or 12% or that Rocky Mountain Power has increased their rates by about 10%,” Eppler said.

He added overall there also has been more usage with climate change resulting in warmer temperatures and less rain and snow.

“We actually did really well through 2019, then with COVID, we had to run our fans all the time and that changed our efficiency,” Eppler said, although the rates still are only a few cents up from pre-pandemic periods.

He said that with newer, upgraded

equipment, the schools are more efficient.

With the recent rebuild of Hillcrest, students learned that 10 new condensing boilers, which are only heated up to 120 degrees, replaced two larger steam boilers that heated water to 160 degrees.

“What this means is that now all the water goes into a main line and the temperature of the return water that comes back dictates whether we need to bring on another boiler,” he said. “By using one boiler to heat instead of two, it has saved Canyons HVAC dollars and energy. When we inherited the schools back from Jordan School District, it was terrible. Our usage looked like it was a runaway freight train.”

Sometimes, when a building is modified, Eppler said, it can throw the systems off.

“What ruins it is when they start subdividing the rooms, knocking down walls, adding walls. Technically, then they need a rebalance in rooms so that the air matches what is required. But instead, people start getting creative. At Bell View (Elementary) last year, where the principal’s office was once much larger, it was subdivided, but they didn’t move the ducts; so the principal was getting blown to death and was getting twice as much air and freezing, while everyone else was hot,” he said.

In some cases, adjustments can be made to help with the usage. Eppler illustrated the improvements at Park Lane, an elementary that has not been rebuilt.

“There has been a 70% improvement at Park Lane,” he said. “When I came here, we recommissioned the programming of the HVAC system. In a nutshell, buildings were probably running 24/7 and we basically started running it when people are there and

set a temperature range and that allowed for it not to be constantly cooling and heating.

Now, with the new schools, we can control the temperature in rooms, and in some schools, we have zones we can cool or heat.

As those old systems are being replaced, we’ve become smarter and more efficient about the way we are heating and cooling the buildings.”

Eppler has seen marked improvement with newer buildings, such as Butler Elementary improving 44%, Alta View Elementary at 43%, and Midvale Middle at 71% and Mt. Jordan Middle at 70% from their former buildings.

In addition, he said Canyons has saved energy and money by putting intelligent HVAC programming into the buildings’ automated systems, installing LED lighting and educating staff to become more conscientious.

“We’ve reduced cost substantially. It helps the environment because these buildings pollute less. It helps because we’re using less water,” Eppler said. “Our job, we’re in the background, trying to keep our water usage and our energy use down for essentially 50 buildings throughout the district.

These all influence a child’s ability to learn and a teacher’s ability to teach. The reason I left the private sector was because I wanted to change the world and make this difference in the school system.” l

Councilmember Ryan Mecham made a motion to amend Resolution 22-43C to include the following language: “Be it further resolved that Sandy City intends to fully fund the replacement of Fire Station 31.”

Fire Station 31 was built in 1984 and serves as a station and administrative offices.

The building sustained foundation damage during the March 2020 earthquake, according to a video walkthrough led by Sandy Fire Department Chief Bruce Cline in June.

The roof has leaks and all runoffz from rain and snowmelt drains into the fire engine bay, which can make the floor slippery. Perhaps ironically, the bedrooms that have been added onto the station do not meet any kind of fire code, according to Cline.

On Oct. 11, Cline reported to the council that the Sandy City Fire Department administration has identified eight potential locations for the relocation and rebuild of Fire Station 31.

The Alta Canyon Sports Center was also built in 1984 and since then the demand has greatly outgrown the space. For example, a bay of lockers was removed from the men’s locker room and the space was turned into a classroom, according to Lois Stillion, the ACSC manager. She notes that the men’s locker room is now the same size of the

women’s, which was smaller in the original design. Some offices are housed in mechanical rooms and a racquetball court has been converted into a room for cardio machines.

The adjacent tennis courts are unplayable and the outdoor swimming pool is crumbling.

The 45-year-old public works fleet facility was in need of an update or repair even before a fire in 2017 destroyed the administration offices and some shop space. Deploying snowplows takes two hours longer than it should because of the tight maneuvering required to move them out of the storage bays and other vehicles have a shorter useful life than they would have if not stored outdoors, according to Mike Gladbach, the Public Works Department head.

Cyndi Sharkey was the only councilmember to vote no on the resolution.

“It’s our intention to find a way to fund all these things,” Sharkey said. “So in terms of priorities, for anyone who has become confused along the way, the first project is public works. So that’s the only reason why I would be voting against this amendment is that the purpose of the resolution is to define how we’re going to fund these projects, not what we’re going to fund. That could be a much, much longer list.” l

New Trader Joe’s store confirmed for Sandy/Draper area

A

fter months of rumors (and whispered updates from the Cottonwood Heights location employees), it’s official: there will be a Trader Joe’s store built at 11479 S. State St. The confirmation was posted on the company’s website Oct. 14.

People have been discussing the store online and asking employees about it for months. On Aug. 31, a resident started a thread on the Sandy area Nextdoor app saying the new store opening was postponed.

This was six weeks before the company even confirmed there would be a store.

“To all those who were excited—and we still are—about having a more convenient Trader Joe’s location: I found out this morning while at Trader Joe’s that they will not be opening now until February (2023).

Sounds like there were several reasons for the postponement,” writes C.C. of Sandy.

Dozens of people commented, most of them excited about a location in the Draper/ Sandy area. “Can’t wait for a closer TJ’s,” posted A.M. “They usually have amazing staff that seem to like their jobs,” wrote B.F. Others were curious as to why people seem so loyal to this California-based chain.

R.P. asked on Nextdoor, “I honestly want to know (because) I am unfamiliar with (it), what is so special about this store? Is it a natural foods store like Whole Foods or Sprouts?”

Many people responded that they like the Trader Joe’s branded items, though it does sell a few things that are found in other stores. Because they carry only one or two brands of each item, the overall store is smaller. There’s also a selection of readymade meals.

“It’s not very big, but it’s got a lot of items. You won’t see traditional brands that

are in familiar grocery stores.

“They have their own products, they do their own thing. Some of the things they carry (you) can’t get anywhere but at a Trader Joe’s,” answered C.C., who had started the original thread.

On their website, Trader Joe’s describes themselves as “your neighborhood grocery store. You’ll find unconventional and interesting products…as well as everyday basics.” Milk, eggs, produce, cheese selection and fresh flowers are also mentioned.

An ad called the Fearless Flyer is sent to homes close to the store. It advertises seasonal items and features old-fashioned looking drawings of people enjoying Trader Joe’s products and making witty comments.

A few people were less enthused about having a chain store that purported to be a neighborhood store, worried about how it might affect the established grocery store offerings.

“I want a real neighborhood grocery, not a niche store that I might visit once every three years. The (Sandy) Smith’s is absolutely horrible, and without any competition they will continue to be so. Trader Joe’s is not the kind of competition they need,” wrote M.W. Smith’s operates two stores in Sandy and several others close by. It is owned by The Kroger Co., which is headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The location gets a lot of traffic—it’s right off State Street and 11400 South where there is a freeway entrance/exit. Many businesses seem to be flourishing there, though others have had a hard time.

The store’s location used to be a Whole Foods, but it closed in 2017. Months ago, a Taco Time in the same shopping area closed.

Curious neighbors have driven by and watched for signs on development. “I peeked in the windows a couple of days ago and could tell by the state of the interior that there was zero chance they’d be open by October or November.

“It looks like they’ve only barely started demolition of the old Whole Foods,” wrote R.J. on Sept. 1.

When it opens in 2023, the location will be the fourth in Utah. The Salt Lake City location opened on 400 South in 2012, the

Cottonwood Heights location in the Fort Union area opened in 2015 and the Orem store opened in 2018.

Managing Grief in the Holidays

By William G. Hoy Holidays in grief can be particularly challenging with familiar and sentimental sights, sounds, and smells reminding us our loved one is not here. Because this period of the year is built around relationships, a death in the family can make these weeks very difficult. But rather than attempt to just “grope our way” through these special days, there are ways to grow personally through the holidays as grief becomes transformative for us.

Saying goodbye to a loved one is anything but easy, especially if well-meaning friends and family members expect you to just “get on with your life.” Allow time and space for grieving and crying this holiday season. Keeping a journal can provide a vital opportunity for reflection during the holidays. These weeks will not be the same as before because of the “empty chair” at the table so the pain is inevitable.

A list of favorite holiday activities might be quite lengthy but make that list anyway. The list might include many holiday traditions such when the house is decorated, when and where worship takes place, and in whose home the family meals are shared. Though it is impossible to do everything “just like when Mom was here,” you can evaluate what you do for the holidays and determine, with your family’s help, which of those traditions you want to preserve.

In evaluating holiday traditions, consider creating something new. Lighting a special candle, purchasing a unique holiday decoration, providing gifts to a needy family, or hosting an international student can become meaningful holiday traditions.

Well-meaning friends or family may want you to attend parties and gatherings, hoping to “cheer you up” but take control of your schedule and do only as much celebrating as you feel ready to do. Choosing which events to participate in acknowledges that grief is a tiring experience. Even under the best of circumstances, holidays can be taxing so attempting to attend every event, party, or celebration may bring about total exhaustion. Instead, say “no” to some well-intentioned invitations.

Simply remind friends, “My energy level hasn’t returned to where it was before he died; thank you for understanding my need to decline.”

Pay close attention to physical well-being, too. Adequate rest, good nutrition, and moderate exercise is essential for the grief process. Lean meats with fresh fruits and vegetables are better choices than sugar- and fat-laden treats. If your health care provider approves, a brisk walk or other moderate exercise can help you feel better physically and emotionally. And eating a healthy diet coupled with moderate exercise is a remedy for insomnia for many mourners.

Be sure to consider the spiritual aspects of life, too. Because holidays have spiritual roots make sure to include time for worship and reflection during this period.

Volunteering to help others or making a memorial contribution is a meaningful way to put feet to faith during the holiday season.

While it is inevitable to face pain at the holidays, following these suggestions can help bereaved individuals and families find transformative growth during this special season of the year.

Union Middle students ‘Stop the World’ with ‘Newsies, Jr.’ performances

“N

ewsies Stop the World,” is front page news when a reporter writes how newsboys bring light to the poor working conditions of not only themselves, but of all children in labor.

The clever headline also plays off the fact the newsies are striking in turn-of-the-century New York City to rally together in opposition to unfair work conditions by powerful New York World newspaper publisher, Joseph Pulitzer.

More than 130 students are making headlines at Union Middle School as they are a part of the newly released “Disney’s Newsies, Jr.,” a 70-minute version of the 2012 Broadway musical and movie.

The student-actors will perform the show at 7 p.m., Nov. 30-Dec. 3, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday on the school’s stage, 615 E. 8000 South. Tickets are $3 and are available at the door or at umspa.yapsody.com.

“We like that it is a really large cast, and we can include as many kids as possible,” said drama teacher Brooke Grant, who is codirecting the show with music teacher David Christensen and dance teacher Roxanne Paulsen.

“There are more lead newsies in the junior version; they’ve added some parts so there are more dedicated female roles.”

were prepped and ready and moved into the lead roles this year.”

She said the same thing is true this year, so Grant expects next year’s production to have strong leaders as well.

Paulsen added that “double-casting allows us to do that, to train our students.”

Grant said the “Newsies, Jr.” cast is one of the largest casts ever in the school history, and the last time students will perform a musical on the current stage as a new school building is being constructed and upon completion, the school built in 1968 will be demolished.

The new auditorium will seat about 650 patrons, about half the size of the current theater’s 1,200 seats, Grant said, so with the musical being “heavy” on dance, the larger stage works well.

“The students are being pushed out of their comfort zones as far as movement goes.

It’s iconic choreography, so it’s fun to draw kids into seeing it and recreating it our own way,” Paulsen said. “We’ll do it at the students’ level, but there are iconic moments and motifs we put in.”

Some students have tap experience from previous shows or from studio lessons while others are learning it for the first time for “The King of New York” number.

“We’ll highlight those with experience and the others will join them in performing tap steps,” she said.

Joining them in instruction is social studies teacher Taylor Brooks, who has acting, music and dance experience, and can help teach the thespians.

In addition to those on stage, there are two student stage managers and a 25-student stage crew helping with props and signs in addition to sound and lights. Grant said that the Art 3 class is painting backdrops for shows and parents volunteer with costumes and props.

“It’s fun for our community to be a part of this. We don’t have sports teams other than intramurals here, so this is the big thing, the draw that pulls all our students together,” Grant said.

“When students are in the cast and crew, even if they’re in the ensemble, they’re connecting and being part of the community and tradition of being in a Union musical.”

“It takes all our community to pull it off,” Paulsen said.

Grant said there will be a surprise—even to the student-actors—appearance in the show.

There also may be an opportunity to involve Union alumni, although Grant isn’t ready to reveal those plans.

She said it has been a gratifying experience for both the students and herself.

“It’s a fun musical for students to be playing kids the same age and there’s not a ton of shows like that. They are filling the roles very naturally, and they’re very much connect to their roles, to the David and Goliath aspect of the show. It’s very empowering and uplifting.

It’s important that they feel the story they’re telling is helping them grow as people,” Grant said. “I’ve enjoyed seeing them succeed. It’s a hard show and it’s known for its dancing, and they have to be singing and acting at the same time. It’s been fun seeing them overcome the challenges to succeed.” l

Gov. Cox opens up to Alta High students, answers their questions candidly

obody can say Alta High student body officers don’t do their homework.

Given the recent chance to escort Utah Gov. Spencer Cox around their campus and pose questions to him, the Alta Hawk student leaders researched his different policies and stands on issues such as the mental health crisis, gas prices and refineries and the shrinking Great Salt Lake.

But one question caught the governor off guard.

“I asked if he had ever aspired to be an actor,” Alta student body audio visual officer Cali Jeppson said. “I was researching him and learned he was an extra, a hippie guitarist, in ‘Saturday’s Warrior’ and I’ve seen that movie; my uncle was in that movie. He turned all red and was really embarrassed, but then said that his friend had asked him if he wanted to be in the movie, so he went along.”

Cox, who was greeted by Alta’s drumline and cheerleaders holding a banner, toured the school as part of an opportunity to go to multiple high schools across the state, getting the chance to speak and listen with students, learning what was on their minds, said Principal Ken Rowley.

“When they called, they just said, ‘We’d like to come and have him visit with a small group and then a large group. He can answer their questions and talk with them about things that he’s concerned about. He really wanted to touch base with kids. He wanted to get a feel of what kids are going through today and what some of their issues are that they’re facing right now, that they’re concerned about,” Rowley said.

While touring the new Commons and field house, Alta student body financial chair Paige Haddock said she asked him about mental health.

“I was asking him if he was aware of how big of a deal mental health is with teenagers right now and what he’s doing to give them the services that they need to help out with that,” she said.

Her classmate and student body attorney general JJ Sullivan said Cox addressed it openly.

“He told us what he’s trying to work on right now and wanted to make sure we knew about the SafeUT app,” said the senior who attends the school that piloted the app that allows students 24/7 access to counseling services. “He talked to us about social media and those influences. He just encouraged us to put our phones down, which we hear a lot, and be present with each other, to show empathy and to disconnect to reconnect.”

Rowley said Cox shared with them his own experience.

“He opened up a little bit and showed a little bit of vulnerability to our kids when he shared his own story when he was in the eighth-grade and he was considering self-

harm after being bullied and how a coach helped him overcome it,” Rowley said, adding that the governor told students that they are all important and to find time to talk to their peers.

Student body secretary Taylor Hadfield said he brought it up as “he doesn’t want anyone to go through what he went through.

He wants us to be somebody kind and to encourage kindness.”

Canyons Board of Education Vice President Steve Wrigley listened in on the discussion.

“The governor was really down-to-earth and concerned about suicide and he talked about that. He was really heartfelt,” he said.

“He was really open and personal in answering their questions. Sometimes with governmental officials, they’re an arm’s length away and on a time schedule, but he wasn’t like that. He was there for the students and stopped to talk to people. It was a real big thing for our students to have the governor to come to their school and recognize the excellence in education and meet them, as our future leaders.”

In addition to Cox interacting with the SBOs, he also fielded questions from some of the 350 students who had social studies during that class period in the school’s new Performing Arts Center.

“Seven kids came up on stage and were able to ask him their questions that made him think. He was just open and answered the best he could and was honest from his

perspective. He was being authentic with his answers. For these students to be able to have their questions answered by our governor, that was impressive,” Rowley said.

Those questions not only dealt with public issues, but also those at school such as attendance, how COVID-19 has impacted education, and how social media affects youth today, said Rowley, who along with other administrators, teachers and district officials, stayed in the background during the 59-minute 40-second visit.

“I wanted the kids to run the entire thing. I saw them organize it, lead the discussion and everything. These kids are amazing. They just stepped up and did it,” he said, adding that the school’s newspaper and yearbook staff also were invited to photograph the interactions. “Bottom line, if they remember anything about this, it may be that he was very personal with them. He was very concerned about things that they’re worried about, and he wanted to help them understand how our government and our state is trying to do to help them.”

Student body chief of activities Josh Anderson recalls the story when Gov. Cox, back in the day, ran for student body president.

“He lost by three votes,” he said.

When student body president Zach Scheffner recalled one of those last deciding votes against Cox was cast by his wife, Abby, the student leaders laughed.

On the more serious side, they also talk-

ed about his plans and options for the Great Salt Lake and changing water rights, said student body historian Kimmy Ha. “It’s a big problem,” Ha said. “I know the West is in a drought and everyone is trying to conserve water.”

None of the SBOs had met the governor before. Chill, approachable, easygoing and funny were terms they used to describe him.

“We really got to know him because he talked about his entire life and his mental health stuff. Obviously it could be a little intimidating because he’s the governor and that’s a pretty big deal, but then we learned he was just like us and relatable. It was a cool experience,” student body public relations officer Ian Smith said.

So much so, they shared some Alta swag, including Hawk flip flops with the governor, and now they’re planning to invite him and his wife to this year’s prom, which will be held at the capitol.

Before the spring dance, the SBOs are planning to hold community service projects and winter tournaments to help fundraise to sponsor a Make-A-Wish child in addition to hosting a spirit bowl.

“Our theme this year is ‘better together,’ said student body vice president Jake Motzkus. “We’re working on building better involvement after COVID at our school for all of our students, and especially for our 600 freshmen. We want everyone to feel included because when kids are involved in high school, they enjoy it a lot more.” l

November is the time of year we take a moment to reflect on all of the things we are grateful for in our lives.

There is much to be thankful for in Sandy. We are lucky to live in a beautiful, safe, and strong community. We are thankful to have neighbors who look out for one another.

We are grateful to enjoy a quality of life not found in very many other cities, with our close access to the canyons, parks, and trails. I am grateful to serve as your Mayor and I thank all of you for trusting me with this honor. Most importantly I am thankful for each one of you.

The Light up the Cairns event will be bigger and better this year! Every year we celebrate turning on the holiday lights at City Hall. We have a countdown to turn on the lights, holiday music and hot chocolate! This year we will also be adding a drone show to the event, weather

permitting! It is a great way to kick off the holiday season and enjoy some beautiful lights throughout City Hall! Join us on November 28th at 6 pm at City Hall!

The Porter Rockwell trail is finally complete in Sandy. This is a project that has been in the making since 1997. Thanks to the efforts of the Sandy City Parks Department, the UTA and the WFRC, the beautiful 4.8 mile trail connects Dimple Dell park, Railroad park, Scott Cowdell park, Dewey Bluth park and the Sandy dog park. The completion of this scenic trail moves Sandy towards its goal of an active transportation corridor that runs north to south and also connects to surrounding cities Midvale, the 10 mile portion in Draper and through to Lehi, which is very exciting. Whether you are on foot, bike, scooter or stroller, the views of the city and mountains can’t be beat. The Porter Rockwell Trail will bring opportunities for families to enjoy the outdoors right in the heart of the city for generations to come.

Code Enforcement Division – Who we are and what we do

Fall Quick Tips from Sandy Police Department

Mark Wooten – Team Leader and Officer over the southeast quadrant of the city.

I grew up in Sandy City and graduated from Alta High School. While in high school I participated in the Sandy City Police Explorer program. In 2010, after twenty-one years, I retired from the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office/ Unified Police Department. I worked various assignments during my law enforcement career including Patrol, Gangs, Detectives and Community Policing. That same year I was hired by Sandy City as a Code Enforcement Officer. The experience and lessons learned during my Police career made the transition to Code Enforcement very easy. Sandy City and the Community Development Department have been a great place to work. It’s been my family away from home. Outside of work, I like to go camping and spend time with my kids and grandkids.

Brad Hunter – Officer over the northeast quadrant of the city.

I have been a code enforcement officer at Sandy City for over nine years. I was born and raised in Draper, Utah and attended high school at Alta High. My first job was at the Kmart in Sandy and while there, decided I wanted to be a police officer and attended the academy while employed there. I was hired by Midvale Police Department after graduation. After two years, I decided I wanted to work for a larger department and was hired as a Deputy Sheriff by the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office. After 22 years plus, I retired as an Officer with the Unified Police Department.

I’m an avid fisherman and have been fortunate enough to have done two deep sea fishing trips, one for King Salmon and one for Bluefin Tuna. I will almost never turn down a bass fishing trip or a Lake Powell fishing trip.

I enjoy serving the citizens of Sandy City in my current position and am thankful for the support and great working environment I have with our administration and leadership in Community Development.

Todd Nielson – Officer over the southwest quadrant of the city.

I have been working with Sandy City the past eight and a half years in Code Enforcement. Prior to working at Sandy, I worked for the Unified Police department and the Sheriff’s Office for 20 years. My assignments there included Patrol, Property Crimes Detective, School Resource Detective, and Motor Officer traffic enforcement. I served in the United States Airforce as a fireman.

I enjoy hanging out with my family, especially my grandkids, gardening, and anything football related.

I like working at Sandy because of the awesome people. The leadership here has been great, and the work / life balance has been everything I wanted from an employer.

James Chiampi – Officer over the northwest quadrant of the city.

I grew up in Newport Beach, California and attended the University of California, Irvine. After school I worked for Orange County for 15 years in Animal Control and Probation. I was also a part time instructor at the Park Ranger Academy. In 2015 I relocated to Utah with my family and was hired by Sandy City as a Code Enforcement Officer. I never imagined I would enjoy my job as much as I do. Each day I’m out in the field responding to calls for service and engaging with Sandy City residents. Outside of work I enjoy travelling, camping, and dirt biking with my family.

Jason Watkins – Assists with bulk waste and helps cover the Historic Sandy area.

I started working at Sandy City in the code enforcement division in September 2022. Everybody working here at Sandy City has been very helpful and welcoming. I enjoy working out in the community. I am a retired police officer and worked for the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office/Unified Police Department for 22 ½ years. I had various assignments including patrol, narcotics, street crimes, community-oriented policing and property crimes. I also worked as a court security officer at the Federal Courthouse for about three years. Prior to my law enforcement career, I worked in construction. I have been married for 27 years and have three children. I like to spend my free time hanging out with my family, hiking in the mountains of Wyoming with my dogs, and fishing.

Sianiu Tei-Misa - Code Enforcement Technician My family and I relocated to Utah from the Bay Area CA in September 2018. I worked for the Presidio Trust in San Francisco for 19 years as a Permitting Administrator. The Presidio Trust is a federal government corporation created by Congress in 1996 to manage the Presidio of San Francisco, a former military base, and a National Historic Landmark district in partnership with the National Park Service and with support from the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. It was a beautiful place to work. I miss it and I miss the Bay area weather. I am grateful for the opportunity to be working at Sandy City. I have been with Sandy for about a year now and I love it. I really enjoy working with the staff here and the camaraderie that it brings. To feel valued as an employee here at Sandy City is second to none and it’s what makes working here so enjoyable. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family.

As we head into the colder months of autumn and the quickly approaching holiday season, our officers tend to see a slight increase in vehicle thefts. The increase is directly related to residents warming up unattended vehicles. It is assumed that idling for 15 minutes is the best way to warm a vehicle. However, the fastest way to warm your vehicle is by driving it. If you choose to warm up your car, be sure to stay inside the vehicle to help avoid becoming a victim of vehicle theft.

Vehicle break-ins and package theft is another concern during the holiday season. Don’t leave your shopping bags in your vehicle in plain sight. This is an open invite for thieves to break into your car.

We all love to shop online; be sure to track your packages and anticipate at home deliveries. There are lots of “porch pirates” roaming the neighborhoods looking for packages on your doorstep. Mail theft, which also includes packages delivered to your doorstep, is a felony.

The Community Arts Department is thrilled to recognize Sandy Hiskey as the first annual recipient of the Linda Snyder Outstanding Service Award. Sandy has been a volunteer with the Sandy Arts Guild and Sandy Amphitheater for the last 4 years.

She has served over 160 hours so far this year and is always quick to jump into help anywhere she is needed. But most of all, she serves with enthusiasm and spreads love to everyone she encounters; she leaves everyone she sees better than she found them.

Her joy is contagious. When she isn't rocking out to her favorite band 311 at the amphitheater, you may find her serving on the board of Ink Against Cancer or spending time with her son, JT, who is her pride and joy. Thank you, Sandy, for lifting us up!

Remembering Linda Snyder The Sandy Arts Guild family fondly remembers the peerless Linda Snyder. Linda's tireless service has been the backbone of the Arts Guild for many years - her dedication and level of service were truly unique in the Guild and inspiring to all who knew her.

Linda unexpectedly passed away this March - a heartbreaking loss for the Sandy Arts Guild and entire Sandy community. She also volunteered in other areas of the city - if you live in Sandy, you have likely benefited from Linda’s service.

She received many Sandy City awards, including Volunteer of the Year. A member of our Executive Board, she spent countless hours painting sets, training volunteers, helping backstage, judging art shows, and ushering at The Theater at Mt. Jordan and the Sandy Amphitheater. Her final project with the Arts Guild was painting the set for James and the Giant Peach, Jr. - she was painting with us just a week before her passing. Linda always said that, "Volunteering keeps me out of trouble." Her sudden passing was heartbreaking for all who have been blessed to know her. Linda will be deeply missed and always loved for her selfless service and caring heart. To honor her legacy, we have created the annual Linda Snyder Outstanding Service Award.

Alta View named the top small hospital in the country by outside study

W

orking in health care has been harder than ever since the pandemic hit.

But Alta View Hospital administrator Scott Roberson is feeling blessed and riding high since Alta View was ranked as the No. 1 Small Hospital in the Nation earlier this year.

“This recognition comes from Fortune, like the Fortune 500. They partner with a company called Merative and release a list of the top 100 hospitals in the U.S. every year,” Roberson said.

Of the 100 they recognized in 2022, 20 were big teaching hospitals, 40 medium sized hospitals and 40 smaller community hospitals like Alta View.

“We have been named to the list for the last eight years, but this is the first time we’ve ranked as No. 1. This award is a very big deal,” Roberson said.

The Fortune website outlines the methodology for the rankings. It states their researchers evaluated 2,650 short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals. Research was based on objective and publicly available data, such as from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Hospitals do not apply for awards, and winners do not pay to market this honor. (www.100tophospitals.com) “(The circumstances of the last two

years) make this year’s 100 Top Hospitals list, based on data from 2020, unlike any other in the annual study’s 28-year history,” wrote Erika Fry on Fortune’s website.

“Strikingly, many of the hospitals that rose to the top of this year’s list were standout performers the previous year (2019), suggesting that the high-performing hospitals were better equipped to manage the precarious tests of the pandemic,” Fry said.

Roberson said the honor is based on several factors.

“To be considered, you have to do things really well. You have to provide safe care, low complication rates and have good outcomes. It’s also based on patient surveys, so patients have to have a good experience when they come to the hospital.

“If you add all that together, it means patients who come to receive care get the best care they can and have a great experience here,” Roberson said.

To him the “great experience” element is crucial, and he feels “blessed” to work with the employees at Alta View.

“One of the things that I am most proud to say about this award is that we earned it through the world’s worst pandemic in over 100 years.

cially health care workers. The team has felt that. This demonstrates the commitment of the people who work here. Most of them are from here in the community. They are incredible and I feel fortunate to work with them,” Roberson said.

The ranking also evaluates the hospital’s financial health and whether they provide care at an affordable cost. “We want those who struggle to still have our services available to them,” Roberson said.

Roberson said hospitals are given the chance during the consideration process to tell researchers how they integrate with and serve their community.

“We’re near Title I schools and have partnered with them. We have school supply drives and clothing drives. We donate to their food pantries. We’ve done a lot to help them,” Roberson said.

Roberson said recognition as a small hospital underscores they’re doing things well at the community level. So while there’s no plan to grow bigger, they are going to broaden their services.

“We have plans in the works, especially addressing the mental health crisis. We’re building a behavioral health access center for people on our campus, dedicating 38 inpatient adult beds to mental health.

“We’re dedicating 24 beds to medical detox. Those are voluntary beds where you can come in to detox if you’ve overdosed.

We’re in the design phase right now, and it should be completed in about three years,” Roberson said.

In addition to Alta View being No. 1, other Utah hospitals who made the list include Cedar City Hospital, Riverton Hospital, Lakeview Hospital, Logan Regional, University of Utah Health, LDS Hospital and Lone Peak Hospital.

“We have a very good niche. We don’t need to be all things to all people. If you need a higher level of care, we can get you stabilized and sent to a specialty center that’s equipped to help you. We meet our community’s needs, and we’ll continue to do that,” Roberson said. l

‘The Nutcracker’ coming to Eastmont Middle

n Pointe School of Ballet is a dream come true for Rachael Ellis, artistic director/owner of En Pointe. Ellis always wanted an elegant, traditional studio. She has worked hard to make her dream come true, and she’s had her hand in every detail of the making of En Pointe. Marc Ellis, scenery director and her husband, has helped in the building of the studio and scenery for performances. Ellis says, “My husband is my No. 1 cheerleader, he has been my great support since before En Pointe began in 2010 at his encouragement.”

The school has decor of Victorian elegance that is inviting and relaxing. En Pointe’s philosophy is to preserve the long-standing traditions and technique of an art form that originated in 15th to 17th century Europe. En Pointe is non-competitive, performance and technique based. Their vision is to create dancers with solid ballet technique and self-esteem.

En Pointe teaches classical ballet. They focus on fulllength theatrical story ballet performances. They have strong core values teaching discipline, love and artistry of ballet.

Classes are taught for ages 3 and up, with beginning ballet offered for children through adults. They have strong boys’ and men’s classes and four levels of partnering classes.

“I love children, and I love watching their self-esteem soar as they learn to dance. I enjoy bringing out the ability to dance, which I believe everyone has within. Classical ballet provides the necessary foundation that is needed to be successful in every other form of dance. Ballet imparts certain gifts to a child which nothing else can. Poise, confidence, discipline, flexibility, grace, and a quick and focused mind are some of the things you can expect for your child to gain.

Proper safe technique and French terminology are introduced to children at a very young age, and the joy of dancing is always emphasized,” Ellis said.

Ellis’ family is involved in the business as well. All of her children help backstage. Mariah Shaw, a daughter, is the office manager. She loves being involved with the arts and enjoys being a part of the cultural experience at En Pointe.

She loves the studio and is happy to be part of the family business and reduce some of her mother’s stress. Michael A. Ellis, her son, is scenery and prop designer/fabricator. He designed the En Pointe website. He teaches weight training for the boy’s and men’s classes. Natasha, another daughter, works on music, editing, teaching and she is the assistant director of performances, and she is a dancer in some En

Pointe productions.

“Our studio is home to incredible and talented instructors, office and boutique managers, staff, directors and volunteers who share our vision, and put their hearts, time and talents into nurturing dancers and students to achieve their goals and feel at home at En Pointe Ballet,” Ellis said.

It is important to Ellis that the atmosphere at her studio be supportive, respectful and helpful to all. She wanted to have a classical studio like the European style, because that is where ballet’s roots originated. Her studio has achieved an elegance in every part of its being. There are pictures of her dancers in classical Victorian-style frames. The windows are long and draped with Victorian draping.

En Pointe has a boutique with everything from dance clothes to shoes for adults and in children’s sizes. Students can order anything they need for other styles of dance, such as shoes for jazz, character, tap and ballroom.

En Pointe Ballet will be performing their take on the story of the “The Nutcracker” in December. “It’s important to me that every member of the audience has the most enjoyable experience possible. I like to educate our students and our audiences regarding beloved ballet traditions,” Ellis said.

Jordan High’s homecoming farmers market helps support student activities

est anyone can recall, it started in 1975.

Who started it and why, nobody quite remembers.

“I think the best thing about it is that it gets them involved,” Jordan High Alumni Association President Kathy Birch Damjanovich, class of ’63, said. “This gives the kids a chance to get involved. It likely was a very wise principal who approved this because it’s a way for the community to support and see the school.”

This is Jordan High’s annual farmers market, an event that has taken on different looks through the years, but a welcome homecoming tradition, said many who attended this year’s Jordan High festivities.

Unlike the typical farmers market where they try to sell their crops of carrots, potatoes and other vegetables—or beets in the case of the Beetdiggers—many student, alumni and PTA organizations sell prepared dinners, homemade crafts or school team gear as a way to help fund their activities and travel for the year.

Damjanovich said she has sold noisemakers, centennial videos and other items that benefited the alumni scholarship fund that gives typically $1,000 to selected students annually.

This year’s Jordan High Latinos-in-Ac-

tion club was hoping to sell up to 300 tacos to help fund attending an upcoming student conference and other activities, said sophomore Isabel Nava.

Junior Camily Gonzalez said the booth was a popular stop for students and alumni alike.

“It’s been good because we can spread awareness, get students to join, and tell people what we do at the same time,” she said.

Choir council member and junior Parker Bettinson said he and other choir members were selling pretzels, music notethemed cookies and beaded bracelets to help earn funds for the choir to participate in the Worldstrides Festival of Gold in Nashville in the spring.

“We won the choral sweepstakes last year at the Heritage Festival in San Diego, so we were invited to this festival and we’re hoping to earn money to participate in it,” he said, adding students can participate in the school’s four different choirs.

The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America student organization was serving pork salad, said sophomore Ellie Dulong. Sophomore Boston Brecke said it took members about one week to prepare the food to sell.

FCCLA to make friends, said that the funds made during the farmers market will go toward field trips and state competition.

Senior Jazmyn Gonzalez said that between the farmers market and return of club activities, it’s been good to see school return to “normal” after COVID-19 put a halt to them.

It’s a tradition that freshman Aubrielle Smith appreciates.

“It’s so cool to see how the community loves this (farmers market) and the school,” she said. “I’m selling old jerseys for the girls’ basketball team, and I’ve talked to a lot of people who played and love to support the team; it’s helpful since it’s helping us purchase our spirit packs. There’s a lot of bonding between us players, but also, with the community.”

In the past few decades, the farmers market had been held at lunchtime, but in 2021, it was expanded to include a tailgate activity.

Tina Hickman Ottley, class of ’94, who participated in debate and the academic decathlon, remembers the farmers market during school. She was with former cheerleader and drill member Sarah Johnson Schaugaard, class of ’95, at the alumni table that sold blankets at the tailgate event.

Teacher Matt Bell, class of ’00, said the tailgate time was added to give the community a chance to support the tradition as well as encourage students to support the football team.

“Last year was the first time some of our students went to their first football game, and this year, there likely will be others having their first experience,” he said. “It’s a way we can connect our students to the school. This has been a great tradition for a lot of clubs to sell items from food to apparel. It’s really expanded through the years and especially now, as a tailgate. There used to be cotton candy, popcorn and caramel apples, but now, there are more meals.”

Bell said that snow cones have been a steady seller through the past few decades.

“We’ve been selling snow cones since 1994-95 when a former wrestler sold us his snow cone maker after he got a new one.

There’s always a demand for them so it’s become a tradition in itself,” he said.

Teacher Shauna Young has been a part of the farmers market for 25 years.

“The farmers market has had a lot of different looks—in front of the school, in back, inside in the commons, now as a tailgate—but it’s a good tradition for students to learn and understand the history of what makes them a Beetdigger,” she said. “For a while, we made and sold baby sugar beets, like Beanie Babies, and that was fun; we may have to bring that back. The farmers market gives club members a chance to get involved and get some leadership experience and for others, to support students by grabbing some food and swag to show pride in their high school.”l

Canyons’ high school students take part in mock drill

illcrest High senior Aiden Reid was slumped in front of a door in a hospital, hearing rounds of bullets echoing from being fired. Semiconscious, he remembered lots of yelling and radio communication.

“I heard people yelling, ‘Get down, get down,” he recalled before he was assisted outside by a SWAT team and medics.

Luckily for Reid, it was a mock shooting drill.

Each year, Intermountain Health Care participates in safety drills to ensure that its caregivers are prepared to respond to a variety of scenarios to ensure the safety of its staff and patients, said Jess Gomez, Intermountain’s media relations director.

“For many of these drills, we work closely with local law enforcement and first responders so that they also have an opportunity to learn and test their preparedness, as well,” he said. “When the opportunity arises, we also include students from area schools to participate in these drills, so they have an opportunity to learn more about safety and what’s involved in keeping our facilities and patients as safe as possible. They have

been fantastic to work with and help us add a realistic approach to these drills.”

While this drill was done at Intermountain TOSH or The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital in Murray, Gomez said Intermountain conducts safety preparedness drills at all of its hospitals and tries to involve the community, when appropriate.

Reid said he was surprised at the realism of the scenario.

“They were firing blanks and noisemaking ammunition and that was really loud. Even with earplugs, it was pretty loud,” he said.

Reid, along with four other Canyons School District high school students, were briefed beforehand and provided an index card, which gave them individual instructions.

He said the injuries varied from his 4-inch gash above his right eyebrow to an eye injury to a neck wound to another, who was fully unconscious. Some victims had bottles of “blood” to spray around them to look like splatter from bullets.

The high school students, most who are enrolled in medical classes and drama, spent about 20 minutes getting their injury and wound make-up done.

“It was really good make-up and being a victim was a cool experience, but it also freaked me out a little with how loud the ammunition was,” he said.

“They provided us with mental health services in case something did trigger or something in the activity did harm us. I was very grateful for that.”

Reid volunteered to be part of the scenario.

“I’m glad I got to do this and I’m glad the hospital gets to do it as well.

Not only does it train the SWAT on how to handle real-life situations, but it also helps the hospital workers to know what to do as well,” he said.

Once helped outside, Reid was told to put pressure on his wound.

“There was not a lot of after medical care, the focus was more inside and of the evacuation,” he said.

The scenario also gave him a different kind of look into his possible medical future as Reid, who is enrolled in the medical pathways program, hopes to work in pharmacology at a hospital.

While Reid gave his mother a fright, sending her a photo of his injury without

explanation—“I feel bad about that”—the service is one he will remember—“I thought this would just be a good opportunity to do some community service because not everyone is up and willing to go volunteer for something like this”— along with a bullet shell casing he picked up as a souvenir. l

Salt Lake County Mayor and Council pass resolution opposing the gondola

A

fter the Utah Department of Transportation identified Gondola Alternative B as the best option to improve transportation in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson and the county council passed a joint resolution asking UDOT to remove the gondola from consideration.

The resolution suggested that UDOT adopt the Common-Sense Solutions Approach, stating it would be more fiscally responsible and help protect and preserve the canyon.

“Instead of constructing 23 skyscraper-sized gondola towers that will devastate the majestic views of the canyon, UDOT should pursue common-sense solutions that invest in more practical, adaptable, and less invasive transportation strategies,” Wilson said. “These solutions on their own have the potential to solve the traffic problem without destroying our canyon. This common-sense approach will demonstrate that the costly and unsightly gondola is not right for our canyons.”

Common-sense solutions include creating a toll for the canyon, providing electric buses with mobility hubs, adopting parking management strategies that would include parking reservations and a smartphone app, and adding incentives for carpooling and rideshare programs.

Environmental organizations and many city leaders in the county have come forward to oppose construction of the gondola, which has a $550-million price tag, just for initial construction costs. Concerns were raised that the gondola only stops at two private ski resorts, only removes about 30% of canyon traffic and involves constructing nearly two dozen gondola towers up Little Cottonwood Canyon, plus a

base-camp location at the mouth of the canyon.

“We are moving into a difficult time in our economy,” said Salt Lake County Council Chair Laurie Stringham. “As UDOT looks at building a gondola in Little Cottonwood Canyon, I would urge the State of Utah to look at all facets of this issue: water protection, fire safety, two ways in and out of the canyon in case of fire or avalanche, and other options available that solve more than just a narrow scope. It is easy for an entity with a narrow scope to come to a conclusion, but as public officials, we have a range of problems to solve and we need to look at solutions that solve those problems, not just a narrow scope.”

UDOT’s decision comes after a four-year Environmental Impact Study that started in the spring of 2018. The intent was to create transportation solutions to improve mobility and safety for visitors to Little Cottonwood Canyon and along Wasatch Boulevard. “Taxpayers shouldn’t foot the bill for a permanent and risky project like this, especially when we could invest in common-sense solutions like electric buses that can also be used to benefit transportation issues across Salt Lake Valley,” said Salt Lake County Council Member Jim Bradley.

After heated public comment and a debate between council members, the resolution narrowly passed with a 5-4 vote. Council members Dave Alvord, Aimee Winder Newton, Steve Debry and Dea Theodore voted against the resolution.

Inaugural Jordan River celebration highlights the work being done to preserve the waterway

lowing through the center of the Salt Lake Valley, the 50-mile long Jordan River has experienced a revival over the last 10 years. As one of the major tributaries to the Great Salt Lake, the Jordan River has become the focus of conservation and preservation efforts.

The Jordan River Commission will celebrate and recognize people and organizations who have spurred the resurgence of the river at an event on Thursday, Nov. 10 from 4-8 p.m. at the new Zions Bancorporation Technology Center (7860 S. Bingham Junction Blvd.) in Midvale.

“It’s going to be a multifaceted event with tours of the parkway, with art, with music, with dinner and recognition of these special contributors to the work we’re doing to improve the parkway and make it more accessible,” said Soren Simonsen, Jordan River Commission executive director.

“We want to open up opportunities for education and arts and expression.”

The inaugural event will feature a tour of the Zions campus and Jordan River Parkway, including a bike ride to the Big Bend Nature Reserve. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes, although some bikes will be available on site. The tour is free and open to the public from 4-5:30 p.m.

Following the tour, a celebration dinner will recognize Jordan River champions who are dedicated to improving, preserving and restoring the river and the parkway. Tickets are $30 and seating is limited. Ticketing information is available on the Jordan River Commission’s social media pages

“We’re hoping this will be a magical evening that focuses on the river in a location that’s really beautiful and overlooks the river,” Simonsen said. “It's a brand new facility and is connected to the Jordan River Parkway.”

The new Zions Bancorporation Technology Center promotes biodiversity and provides additional habitat for the river. Zions has incorporated a bike share program so employees can use the parkway to bike to work. Artwork in the building focuses on the beauty of the area.

During the event, the Center for Documentary Expression and Arts will present photo documentary work created along the Jordan River.

The Jordan River flows through three counties and 16 cities, with each section adding different attractions. Boat launches, nature walks, stormwater treatment and bird sanctuaries have brought attention to the river which connects Utah Lake to the Great Salt Lake. Keeping the river healthy is one of the ways to help the Great Salt Lake.

“It’s hard to talk about the Great Salt Lake without talking about its tributaries. Obviously, when you see the really low water levels of the Great Salt Lake and you see the low water levels of some parts of the Jordan River, it’s easy to make the connection,” he said. “We’ve used the focus on the Great Salt Lake to remind people that the Jordan River is part of the solution to what’s ailing the lake. This is a good opportunity to raise awareness about that.”

race Lutheran School students learned about the U.S. Constitution during a weeklong celebration in September.

With the help of the Salt Lake Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, students rotated through stations to write with quill pens, learn about the framers and creation of the Constitution and participate in other activities.

Park Lane students cheer for each other during fun run, ‘wild’ about assembly

ark Lane Principal Justin Jeffery is “wild” about animals—well, except for snakes.

“I could feel him tighten up around me,” Jeffery said about a boa constrictor that was placed around his neck in front of the student body. “I was more nervous about this than jumping out of a plane.”

Both were incentives for students to participate in the school’s PTA one-mile fun run fundraiser that funds activities such as Red Ribbon Week, field trips, accelerated reading, field day, Junior Achievement, Reflections, STEM and art nights and others. Last year, he skydived in tandem with Skydive Utah when students reached their goal.

This year, with students surpassing the $12,000 goal by $5,000, he upheld his promise to kiss a crocodile and hold the 10-foot-long snake.

“I lived in Texas so I’m used to crocodiles, but I didn’t think I would be kissing him on the face,” said the principal who closed his eyes when he smooched the reptile. “I was happiest when I couldn’t see his face.”

Even with the “Wild for Learning” theme, Jeffery said there’s more to the Sept. 16 fun run than just the incentives that brought in the Scales and Tails assembly and a visit from Jack the Goat from Sandy Animal Services.

ery kid gets to participate in a super cute Park Lane Panthers shirt, but it brings together and involves our community,” he said. “Jordan’s cross country team comes and they do warmups and stretches with the kids and they and some football team members run alongside them, then we have a lot of parents who come run or help, we have neighbors come out and cheer them on and the police department is here on motorcycles ensuring everyone finishes.”

He said it’s a positive, inclusive activity for everyone.

Fourth-grader Lucas Mjrck, who has cerebral palsy, said the best parts were “running with my two best Beetdigger football friends” who came to assist him in the fun run so he could “go farther than last year; next year, I’m going to beat what I did this year.”

His teacher, Gioconda Velez, said it was exciting for her students to see their families and neighbors hold signs, encouraging them.

“They were so happy and excited to run,” she said. “Lucas even made a trailer for the fundraiser telling his family and friends about the run. It’s more than a fun run and Otter Pops and music afterward to these students; it brings us together as a school and community.”

Third-grader Elsa Dent made a goal to use her walker instead of her wheelchair during the fun run.

“I was excited to do this with my classmates,” she said. “It would have been bumpy in my chair. I had CP camp (physical therapy for cerebral palsy) after my surgery on my legs and fixing my flat feet, so now I’m able to do this. I wanted to do this.”

Although her course was shorter than most of the students, Elsa, who is a dancer, was joined by her younger brother walking to the finish to the cheers and clapping of family, friends, classmates and neighbors.

“The police stopped the traffic and were even cheering for me,” she said. “I love the fun run; I feel like a champion.” l

Barking up the wrong tree

M

y dog Jedi started barking at cars. All the time. I don’t know why but my best guess is she a) hates cars, b) loves cars, c) wants to scare cars or d) she needs a ride to Petsmart to pick up some jerky treats and tennis balls.

I stop her from dragging us both into traffic by creating a distraction, usually with yummy treats. I tell her to look at me, hoping to snag her attention away from the tempting Hondas and Toyotas with their tantalizing and rumbly engines.

Sometimes she continues flinging herself toward cars but once she realizes a treat is coming, in the form of mozzarella or pepperoni, she usually stops barking and waits to be rewarded. Not really rocket surgery, but it works.

Someone suggested Jedi’s barking could be a reaction to stress which is probably true because we’re all as stressed as a Yellowstone bison being approached by human-shaped idiots.

Jedi also feels the urge to run outside at 3 a.m. to bark at neighbor dogs, tree shadows and (probably) aliens. Her woofing seems to be important. It’s like breaking news in the canine world.

I can’t yell at her to be quiet because then we’d both be barking at three in the morning. Plus, she’d translate my yapping as, “You are doing such a good job at howling, Jedi. Please, continue louder. Some neighbors might still be asleep.”

Once the noise levels drop, I check social media where barking has been elevated to an Olympic sport. Viral TikToks catch people in the act of snarling at each other. Twitter feeds show a slow regression back to our caveman roots where everyone spoke in grunts and howls.

Parents bark at teachers and librarians. Drivers bark at each other. Customers bark at grocery store cashiers, and let me tell you, cashiers don’t get paid enough to put up with

that baloney. Restaurant guests bark at the waitstaff, which usually ends with a footprint on your waffle. Y’all bark so much, I think some of you might have rabies.

Dogs bark because they’re excited, hungry, bored, scared, tired, playful and frustrated. The trick is to distract them and teach them a different way to communicate. Humans also need a different way to communicate, because barking isn’t working.

It doesn’t matter if you’re barking in fear or anger or fatigue, your message gets lost in the noise. Every time. Have you ever screamed at someone and thought, “Boy, I really think I got my point across. I feel so heard”? Yeah, me neither.

On the opposite end of the rainbow, my daughter had a teacher who only spoke in a whisper. The kids had to be quiet to hear what she was saying. It was kind of creepy talking to her because she’d forget she was talking to an adult and keep whispering.

Maybe there’s a happy medium between barking and mumbling. I know, let’s call it “civil discourse” where our conversations actually promote understanding and connection. Revolutionary!

Instead of talking to prove your point, can you kindly explain why you hate avocados, without melting into a puddle of sweat? Can you avoid the gnashing and spittle that comes with barking and just talk like a human being?

It might take practice but maybe if we calm down, our families will settle, our communities will rebuild and our civil discourse will improve.

Less barking, more listening. And lots of treats. l
