at Kimsey of Sandy has always loved hiking. But once she was in her 60s, she was afraid she might have to skip one of the hikes on her bucket list: Mount Kilimanjaro.

“I’ve always wanted to hike Kilimanjaro. I’m 66 now, and at Thanksgiving in 2020 I mentioned to my son Marcus that I thought I had missed my chance,” Kimsey said.

But Marcus didn’t agree.

“I’ll go with you. Let’s do it,” Marcus said.

Kimsey and Marcus planned to go in February 2021, but had problems getting out of the country.

“Marcus is an attorney and Lt. Colonel in the Air Force. He lives in Florida and because of Covid his travel request was denied,” Kimsey said.

While waiting for restrictions to ease, Kimsey prepared physically.

“In warmer weather, I’d hike in the Albion Basin. Other days, I went to the gym and did the Stairmaster, or walked on the treadmill at a 15% grade, sometimes with my pack on,” Kimsey said.

A year later, Marcus was cleared to travel to Africa. They made plans for the dry season, February 2022. Kimsey was excited to cross Kilimanjaro off her list, but also to do it with her son.

City survey shows majority don’t want ranked choice voting again

A

fter a unique election cycle in 2021 where Sandy City participated in a pilot project for ranked choice voting, city officials conducted surveys to determine how residents felt about the voting process.

The survey report, presented to the city council in April, showed answers to questions such as if the process was easy or hard, whether they liked or disliked it, and if the city should use RCV in the future, among others.

“This is an important exercise to connect with our residents,” Mayor Monica Zoltanski said prior to the presentation, noting the value of having surveys like this to gauge the “sentiment of our community.”

Just over 2,500 residents participated in the survey either through the city’s Citizen Connect Panel or an anonymous link distributed through postcards, social media, the website, email and text. Over 1,800 participated through the anonymous link.

Zoltanski said it was the second-highest response rate they’ve had (first was about the canyon transportation).

Of the responses to whether they found the process was easy or hard, 63% said it was very or somewhat easy through the anonymous link and 74% said the same thing through the connect panel.

For whether they liked or disliked using RCV, 54% responded disliking it a great deal with 28% liking it a great deal on the anonymous link. While on the connect panel, 30% disliked it a great deal while 33% liked it a great deal.

As for whether it should be used in the future, the anonymous link showed a wider disparity with 64% saying no. The connect panel however, was almost split at 51-49 in favor.

Other questions were follow-ups to how someone may have answered a question. Responses for why residents found the voting difficult included confusion, too many candidates, or uncomfortable with how many votes they were essentially casting. Some residents responded they only voted for one candidate because they didn’t want to use RCV in the first place, were told to only cast one vote or felt their other choices could dilute their first choice’s chance.

Regardless of votes, most every respondent felt there were too many candidates for RCV (there were eight candidates for mayor last year).

The survey was done through Qualtrics, with the two initial questions asking if they are a Sandy resident and for their address to ensure only locals participated.

Councilwoman Cyndi Sharkey was concerned about the amount who responded saying they didn’t like RCV because it removed party affiliation. She noted the recorders office fielded that question multiple times in the runup to the election.

“That was very worrisome to me,” she said.

Councilman Ryan Mecham said he appreciated the methodology noting the surveys are a “valuable tool” they have. But he did note those who respond tend to have strong opinions on the matter, so they don’t always capture how those in the middle of the spectrum feel.

“There is a segment we’re missing throughout this,” he said.

Zoltanski agreed that is a challenge, and pointed out they should welcome any chance for feedback. “I want to reach people where they consume their communications…I want to hear it all.”

The report was simply informational for the council, without set discussion on its future in the city. Councilwoman Marci Houseman explained the council’s vote last year was only to participate in the pilot program and would require another vote to administer RCV again.

“That vote did not perpetually implement ranked choice voting,” she said.

Zoltanski, who remains opposed to RCV, said she was surprised by the results of the survey expecting “stronger opposition.”

“I would not proceed with it in another election if I had to vote again,” she said.

Zoltanski voted against using it last year, not wanting to use an experimental method during an important mayoral election.

She did admit the survey was “enlightening” that she maybe didn’t give enough weight to those who approve of the method.

One resident, Patricia Jones, spoke during the meeting vehemently opposed to RCV, citing both the lack of a by-hand recount possibility and the majority of residents being opposed.

“We beg this council to not follow that route,” she said. l

Sandy resident raises alarm about invasive beetles

C

hris Seibert is a self-described “tree hugger” who lives in Sandy near Flat Iron Mesa Park. Last September, he was alarmed by what he saw in his neighbor’s blue spruce tree—a distressed area in the top canopy.

“I had been out of town for a while, and when I saw the tree again it looked like maybe lightning had struck it while I’d been gone. I called a tree specialist I’d used in the past to come check it out,” Seibert said.

Seibert’s tree specialist was Scott Taylor, owner of Wasatch Ecocare. Taylor, a certified arborist, knew immediately what he was seeing.

“I diagnosed the cause of the damage as an Ips beetle. It’s an invasive insect that attacks conifers. That includes blue spruce, cedars and other fir trees. It’s the same insect that’s killing a lot of fir trees in the Uinta Mountains. They cause a lot of damage,” Taylor said.

The pest, also known as an engraving beetle, is so small that it’s hard to spot. Taylor treats 400 to 500 trees per year with the problem, and has only seen the beetle once: when he was on the University of Utah campus and they saved a beetle in a jar.

“This is a black and white issue and as simple as this: if you have any of these types of trees, get them treated,” Taylor said.

Some signs to look for are localized dead branches in the upper part of the canopy, branches with a brownish or purplish look to them, and a look similar to drought stress.

Seibert’s neighbor allowed him to treat her tree, and they both hoped it would be enough to save it. Unfortunately, the damage progressed over the last six months. Taylor believes it’s past saving and should come down.

“Homeowners often don’t see the insect, just its effects. It lays its larva inside the tree.

While the larva grows, they feed on and chew the tissue in the tree,” Taylor said.

The larva attacks the vascular system of the tree. The delivery of water and nutrients is cut off, and the health of the tree compromised. That’s why Seibert saw dead areas at the top of the tree.

Once the beetle gets in and starts to chew, there’s a window of 12 to 18 months where treatments will help.

“If you have any fir trees on your property, you should get them treated. Preventative measures are your best course of action.

“If you start to notice dead areas, damage has already been done. If there’s more than 20% damage, it’s too late. The tree usually can’t be saved,” Taylor said.

Looking back, Seibert realizes he saw warning signs but didn’t know they were there.

“A friend of mine asked me about some pines nearby that looked sick. I hadn’t seen them yet, so I didn’t think about it. And in the spring and early summer I saw all these little black beetles I’d never seen before. I didn’t think they were doing any harm, so I didn’t do anything.

“If I would have asked Scott to come out and look at them, he could have told me right off the bat what they were, and maybe

we could have stopped them from spreading,” Seibert said.

Now Seibert is thinking not just about his trees, but the city at large. He hopes the warning can spread faster than the beetles do.

“The thought of losing this large tree is so sad for us. We want to stop the damage from spreading. But the beetles do migrate.

I’m near Highland Drive and Newcastle and then it’s just a short trip up to the Albion Basin,” Seibert said.

Now that the beetle is on his mind, Seibert is noticing damaged trees in other areas. In addition to looking bad, they’re a fire hazard.

They’re also more likely to blow down during a storm and damage property.

If you’re concerned about the trees on your property, you can call the Cottonwood Heights branch of the U.S. Forest Service at 801-733-2660 for advice. You can also hire Taylor’s company Wasatch Ecocare at 801870-0164 or another private company to treat your trees.

“The trees in my neighborhood, in Flat Iron Mesa Park, in all of Sandy are just as important to me as those in my yard,” Seibert said. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes— make up a flyer and go door to door, go to a Sandy City Council meeting. I just want people to know so we can save our trees.” l

SheTech encourages females to enter STEM field, bring diversity, fill jobs

tah Gov. Spencer Cox isn’t shying away from the numbers nor his goals when it comes to closing the gender gap in women working in the STEM field.

“We want to close the gap when it comes to STEM careers,” Cox said. “We would love to get to 50% and we’re working hard. There is a huge gap in not every part of STEM, but in most parts of STEM.” Cox has been a long-time supporter of the annual SheTech Explorer Day, now in its eighth year. The STEM career exploration day brought in about 2,000 high school girls from 150 high schools and attracts 1,000 mentors and volunteers from 250 tech companies to teach hands-on workshops in programming, engineering, aerospace, robotics, product invention and entrepreneurship, biomedicine, digital marketing, ecommerce, gaming, esports, virtual reality and more fields.

“The world is changing right now, every single career, every single industry in the world is being influenced by technology,” he told participants. “The connection to tech is so important and there’s a huge gap in STEM more than anywhere else. We desperately need more women in STEM for lots of reasons. We have the best economy in the nation. There are only four states in the country that have more jobs now than they did before the Coronavirus pandemic started two years ago. In the state of Utah, our unemployment right now is 1.9%. That’s the lowest in our state’s history…but with that, it also means right now we have thousands of jobs available that are going unfilled; there are really good jobs and most of those are in STEM-related fields.”

Cox said the need to fill those is real for “people who see the world differently in these jobs. We don’t need a whole bunch of guys in these jobs; we need creativity. I hope you bring that creativity to whatever it is you want to do.”

Cydni Tetro, president and one of the founders of Women Tech Council, said that the SheTech Explorer Day was created to help target young women to enter the STEM pipeline.

“We need the diversity,” Tetro said. “We have 4,000 open tech jobs. We need (women in) them in every field—computer science project managers, UX designers, data scientists, all of them.”

The goal of SheTech to show girls technology in a fun atmosphere while meeting STEM role models to learn about opportunities in the fields. The high schoolers have access to internships, college pathway information and other opportunities.

and worldwide software companies.

“I was really interested in how math probability works,” she said after learning more about it at an exhibit.

Her friend, sophomore Samantha Erickson, felt weightlessness while trying out a bicycle gyroscope.

“The force of it was moving me in that direction, which was really cool to experience,” she said. “I’ve checked out every science—biology, aerospace, physics. Marine biology interests me.”

Hillcrest sophomore Elena Parker was investigating future job opportunities, including working at a museum.

“I love being surrounded by history and making exhibits would be really cool,” said Parker, who would like to work at a museum through college before creating her own cartoon series. “My dream is to inspire people to find their passion.”

When they got to Africa, they found out that “dry season” was a misnomer.

“It’s actually just the ‘less rainy’ season; it rained nearly every day,” Kimsey said. Staying dry became a challenge.

Kilimanjaro is made up of three ancient volcanoes, and hikers walk through fields of lava rock. The ascent is dramatic and much of the climb is single file.

“One ledge was very narrow – just 14 inches. Marcus followed me to make sure I was OK.” Kimsey learned that slow and steady really does win the race.

“We did a nine day climb. You can do faster routes, but we chose the longer one so that we could get used to the altitude.

“The challenge with Kilimanjaro is not snow and ice crevasses like in the Himalayas.

It’s the altitude. Coming from Utah helps a little but not much,” Kimsey said.

Kimsey did enjoy the “street cred” she got for being from Utah and spending her life hiking. “The guides were following me, watching out for ‘the old lady’, but they quickly figured out that I knew how to climb a mountain.”

Early on in the planning, Kimsey and her son decided their goal was to get to the top. Not to be the first ones, or the toughest ones, just to be successful.

“We went with a guide and they told our group that the people who are the least successful at reaching the top are healthy young men.

“They think they are invincible. They try to reach the top quickly, and they won’t get help or use oxygen. They end up coming down off the mountain with medical assistance and having to the future architect designer.

Jordan High juniors Kat Marshall and Alicia Appleton learned about technology in video game development and 3D modeling. Both may pursue a career in forensic science.

Alta High freshman Nariska Clement, who wants to be a mechanical engineer, was looking at some robotics and CAD opportunities while her friend Mariam Ilaha Mujadidi was learning more about coding as she may want to enter the IT field as a software engineer.

American Preparatory Academy students Camille Liebsch and Natalia Gutrierrez were coding Ozobots.

“This is a real opportunity to learn a lot of cool things in tech and to make the world better,” Liebsch said.

“It gives women a chance to step it up.”

Gutrierrez said that the atmosphere was inviting.

“It’s a safe space where everyone is supporting the learning that is going on here,” she said.

Business leaders also prospered from the interaction with the girls.

be treated for altitude sickness.” Kimsey said.

Kimsey and Marcus planned to use oxygen as needed. “We thought of it as insurance to help us achieve our goal. It worked. We didn’t get headaches or nausea.”

Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, is in Tanzania. The elevation is 19,341 feet.

By comparison, the mountains in Little Cottonwood Canyon range from 5,000-11,000 feet.

Summiting the peak with Marcus is a singular experience that Kimsey will never forget.

“The last day was long, about 14 hours. We made camp at 15,000 feet. Then we started out at 11 p.m. and hiked through the night.

Caroline Lamph, director of product management at Entrata property management software, said that it’s important to get girls in the predominantly male-oriented tech industry.

“We need the diversity of women in technology,” she said. “It makes us holistic. We want more opportunities for women so we’re actively looking to find more women leaders.”

Maple Mountain senior Victoria Parrotti is one of about 30 girls who make up the SheTech student board which helped plan the event.

“I like seeing other women who have similar interests as I do,” she said. “This is an important day. We’re making female connections and are finding opportunities through SheTech.”

At the end of the day, the high school students participated with adult visionaries and mentors in a 45-minute Tech Challenge where they ideate, solve and pitch solutions.l

“We reached the summit on Feb. 5 and watched the sunrise. It was beautiful and clear.

We could see Kenya and the Serengeti,” Kimsey said.

Kimsey and Marcus had their pictures taken at the elevation marker. Kimsey took notes on her experience and wrote them out into a journal entry when she got home.

“It was a real high. There was a great feeling of accomplishment, even more than I thought it would be. As I’ve reflected on it, I realized this was a big deal,” Kimsey said.

Going down was a much faster trip. Kimsey’s husband flew in to meet her and they took

a well-deserved safari on the Serengeti. She posted some brag-worthy photos on Facebook.

“That was mostly for me – I just wanted to remember it while it was still fresh,” Kimsey said.

Kimsey came back to Sandy and Marcus went back to Florida, but they have this shared experience.

“We shared a tent and talked about lots of things. We talked about camping, about our family and what it was like when he was growing up,” Kimsey said. “It was so nice to spend that time together.” l

raper’s Ashlyn Montague was that “little girl that loved horses” so what began as riding lessons on a pony named Charlie when she was four years old is taking the Corner Canyon High senior to the University of Minnesota-Crookston to compete collegiately.

“I’m really excited to ride in college,” she said. “It wasn’t until this last year that we realized this was an option so I was a little late in the game, but I found a place with a great riding team and with a great equine science program as well.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Ashlyn to the Golden Eagle Equestrian program,” said UMN Crookston head coach Kayla Hanson.

“Ashlyn brings a wealth of experience showing within the American Paint Horse Association competing in the all-around events.

Her versatility in riding and strong ability to adapt will be a significant asset to our team and suit the collegiate format perfectly.”

Mandi Montague, Ashlyn’s mother, said that her daughter’s “ability to get on any horse and get a good ride out of them” caught the eye of Hanson to add to her UMN-Crookston program. “In collegiate riding, you draw an unknown horse at your competition and have four minutes to warm them up and then go out and complete a pattern on them that you are judged on,” said Mandi Montague. “This is a strength that Ashlyn has developed over the years from riding a lot of different horses in a lot of different disciplines, riding difficult horses, and training a young horse.”

Ashlyn’s parents, Ken and Mandi Montague, went “all in” for Mandi’s and Ashlyn’s shared passion for horses in buying horse property in Draper along with two horses in 2009, when Ashlyn was five. Two

By Catherine Garrett | c.garrett@mycityjournals.com years later, she won a blue ribbon in the 4-H Mini Riders Program in showmanship and then she transitioned from English-style riding and jumping to the western side of things with rail, showmanship, barrel racing, pole bending, and speed events.

When she was 10, she claimed the Grand Champion in Showmanship with her American quarter horse, (AQHA) Jasmine, while also qualifying for her first 4-H state event.

At the age of 14, she presented Cosette, her American paint horse (APHA), in western and English disciplines and the Montagues then went on to purchase an APHA yearling named Mae for Ashlyn to train “on her own from the ground up,” according to her mom, over the next couple of years.

Ashlyn has continued to win numerous awards, regardless of which horse she was riding, most recently being named the 2021 Overall Grand Champion for the state 4-H Show as well as the Salt Lake County High A young Ashlyn Montague, of Draper, rides her horse Jasmine a few years into her riding career. “Riding horses is hard physically. You don't horse is not like a football that will just go now,” Mandi Montague said. “Even if the ride isn't what she wanted, she will focus just sit there while the horse does all the where you tell it to go.”

First state unified coed basketball tournament provides inclusion, belonging in high schools

I

n its first unified basketball season, Brighton High Bengals brought home the gold.

But it meant more than that.

It was an opportunity for inclusion, partnership and belonging, said First Lady Abby Cox, who supports unified sports through her Show Up initiative.

“Every student has a chance to be included and every student gets the chance to compete,” she said at the opening ceremony of the state unified basketball tournament where 32 teams played against—and sometimes, played together—for a chance to represent their team and school for a ribbon or medal.

“We clapped when the other team makes a basket—absolutely—but there is some competition because that’s part of life,” Brighton unified basketball coach Jared Denslow said.

“What Special Olympics is trying to teach us is we’re helping kids with special needs to get equal opportunities. We want to treat people equally and to make it an even playing field.”

The tournament included coed athletes from 25 high schools running through a gauntlet of Utah Jazz and Weber State cheer squads and professional teams’ mascots, all there to support unified sports.

It is the first high school state tournament, said Unified Champion Schools manager Courtnie Worthen, since during pre-COVID-19 years, the tournament was held for community teams vying for the state title. The 2020 tournament, which was planned to be a statewide event, was canceled because of the pandemic, and last year, regional competitions were held to reduce the numbers and possible spread of the pandemic.

Worthen said after the statewide soccer tournament last fall, which was held at Rio Tinto stadium and had the support of Real Salt Lake, interest in unified sports grew.

“A lot of it was thanks to the First Lady’s initiative, Show Up,” she said. “More schools started to see what unified sports could be and wanted to be a part of it, so we saw a lot of growth. This was an incredible event.”

That included eight of the nine high schools in Davis School District competing as well as Jordan Education Foundation pledging to support 10 new teams. Wasatch High’s team will even represent Utah at the national Special Olympics games.

Since Worthen began overseeing unified sports four years ago, the competition has more than doubled from 22 to 50 teams involved in soccer, basketball and track.

“A coach told me that this whole week they have seen inclusion, that their students have made friends with unified partners and even students who weren’t participating. They talk to each other and the students on the unified team feel like they’re a part of the school for the first time,” she said.

It’s not just high schools. Worthen said that by the end of the school year, unified sports activities will have quadrupled in the past year, bringing participation up to 160 elementary and secondary schools. In May, unified golf will be introduced at the middle school level.

Unified sports also gained the community’s support.

The basketball tournament, which was supported by the Utah Jazz, had four sections: two developmental and two competitive divisions. The winners of each division were invited to be recognized at the Utah Jazz game April 6, where a highlight reel of the tournament was shown.

However, the focus at the tournament was on basketball.

the sidelines. Several schools had banners and families and friends cheering.

One of Brighton’s teams won its competitive division at both region and state, the developmental team placed third at region and sixth at state. They had a total of 12 players and 12 partners on the teams.

“I got a call from one of my students’ parents who said, ‘Hey, would you be willing to do this?’ It just gives the kids an opportunity to go out there and have some fun,” Denslow said, adding that quickly the school community came to support the team from taking their photos to show on the school’s televisions to providing team members’ free physicals so they could play. “It has really helped to unify the school.”

He said that it helped teach some partners “to put aside their ego and realize, this isn’t about me,” and “see the smiles on the kids’ faces who were proud to represent their school and community; that was what it was about.”

Brighton’s practices began in February, working on basic dribbling to learning how to move and communicate on the court. Players saw one another and learned they could do hard things, so “not only does it help them with physical attributes, but it also helps them in many mental ways,” he said. “We also learned how to win with dignity and how to lose with dignity, just to be good sports and to be kind and to help other people.”

Denslow said that it also allowed them a different social skill activity and they made friends with their peers. The school now plans to host a special needs prom at the school.

Canyons School District, thanks to a Hillcrest High student who received a $1,000 Youth Innovation grant, will also hold a unified dance this spring.

Hillcrest, which finished third at region and fifth at state in their competitive division, was excited for the chance to

play ball.

Huskies senior player Raymond Bryant was ready for his opportunity.

“I play like 24-7,” he said. “I’ve learned how to take better shots, have better ball handling, and pass the ball when my teammates are open. I like how my team works together.

It’s been so much fun learning more about basketball, but also making friends with my team.”

His teammate sophomore player Dax Bowen said that it has been fun.

“We’ve learned how to throw the ball, how to move to an open spot on the court, how to block by having our hands up,” he said after playing in front of his extended family. “It’s just getting a chance to play, play with my friends at school and have fun when we’re playing basketball together.”

That’s how Jordan High freshman Tegan Mast felt.

“I like that we’re getting challenged to play basketball,” Mast said. “We’re really learning new things and getting to meet friends and getting to play; it wasn’t canceled this year because of the pandemic.”

Mast’s teammate, freshman Kaitlyn Unzaga agreed.

“It’s been so much fun and we’re getting to play basketball and learning a lot with our friends,” she said.

The Beetdiggers placed fourth in region and sixth at state.

Denslow said the best thing was a compliment he received when another coach said this team was “the kindest; they showed the best sportsmanship and for me as a teacher and as a father, that meant the most to me. That meant that as a team, people thought we were kind and accepting and that was the best compliment, better than the gold.” l

Middle school basketball tournament gives student-athletes chance to develop skills

T

wo Albion Middle School teams took first in the middle school 3-on-3 intramural basketball district championships.

Albion’s eighth-grade girls’ team and its seventh-grade boys’ team, coached by Nate Foster, took home championship trophies. Midvale Middle won the eighthgrade boys’ trophy and Draper Park Middle won the seventh-grade girls’ top place.

Indian Hills sixth-grade girls team won as did Mt. Jordan sixth-grade boys.

At Midvale, coach Mitch Edmonds held practices Mondays and Wednesdays after school, but he often would find “some of the boys would get up and go to the gym to practice as early as 5:30 a.m. or as late as 10 p.m.”

He said the eighth-grade boys’ leadership with the younger teams and communication on the floor helped them in their overtime win against Albion, beat Mt. Jordan and then knock off Draper Park in the semifinals. Their win against Union in the finals sealed their victory.

Draper Park’s winning seventh-grade girls’ team also were champions as sixth-graders so they “repeated as champions this year,” Draper Park coach Rhodes

Baker said.

Draper Park’s teams practiced three days every week leading up to the tournament. Baker said there was so much interest at the school, they held their own tournament to determine which teams would represent Draper Park in the district tournament.

“Most of the kiddos have played basketball for a few years and know how to play, but I tried to teach them the basics so they could do well at the district tournament,” he said. “On offense we worked on the ‘pick ‘n roll’ and ‘give ‘n go.’ On defense, we worked on boxing out and going to the boards to get the rebound. Overall, I thought the kids played great.” l

Midvalley, school district says goodbye to beloved custodian, others who will retire

F

or nearly 40 years, third head custodian Jim Sheely carried around 136 keys for Midvalley Elementary. Since the new building opened in 2020, he had only 10 keys, which he turned over April 15 upon his retirement.

During his 41.5 years as a custodian, he remembers watering saplings in front of the former school building’s entrance with five-gallon bucket since there were no sprinklers, then watched them grow into mature trees to being pulled out with the construction of the current building.

He constantly fought rusted galvanized pipes, refinished floors removing more than 20 years of built-up wax until carpeting went in, replaced tiles and fixed leaks, and nursed the “Great Dragon,” a nickname given to the old school’s boiler, until it finally quit in 2015. He climbed the metal rod ladder to the roof to throw down countless balls, cleaned up from thousands of school lunches and knew “every brick in the old building,” ac-

cording to a former colleague.

Sheely, who had mounted a framed Intermountain Contractor magazine cover featuring the old school building as well as a 1958 dedication ceremony program to then the “Home of the Chipmunks,” now Junior Huskies, in both his old and current office, was on hand for the school’s 60th anniversary, the forming of the new school district and the ribbon-cutting of the current Midvalley Elementary.

On his final day, he managed to keep his eyes dry despite the numerous hugs and high-fives he received from students during his clap-out.

“I did it for the kids,” he said. “They’re all good kids.”

Now, Sheely and others school district teachers, staff and administrators who are retiring can hang up there “gone fishing” signs after being honored at a Canyons School District dinner on May 12. l

Investments of $30 million-plus tackle affordable housing, jobs and water conservation

I

n a response to the state’s housing crisis, the Salt Lake County Council recently approved $20 million in funds to build and preserve nearly 1,200 affordable housing units. The housing will be near childcare resources and jobs, with access to broadband, transportation and schools.

“More affordable housing is desperately needed,” Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said. “There are way too many hard-working households that are left behind because of skyrocketing home prices, rising rents, and fewer options to choose from. Salt Lake County is listening to residents and responding with significant funding to build and preserve housing.”

Funding for the project comes from the American Rescue Plan Act with an additional $12.1 million earmarked for water conservation and workforce development.

With the steady increase of rental and home ownership costs, and stagnant wages, the council approved the ARPA funds in the form of grants to community housing organizations, nonprofit housing providers, municipalities, and private developers.

In 2021, rental costs increased by 12% and homeownership costs increased by

28% or more in the county. In March 2022, the median price for a Salt Lake County single-family home sold for $580,000.

“Housing is one of the things that keep us up at night,” said Dina Blaes, director of Salt Lake County’s Office of Regional Development. “But, fortunately, the county has a lot of expertise in affordable housing. Boys volleyball approved for sanctioning in 2023-24

epresentatives of the Utah Boys Volleyball Association had sat in meetings with the Utah High School Activities Association before—over the past four years in a formal fashion. So, when the UHSAA board again put the sanctioning of boys volleyball to a vote, the UBVA members braced themselves. They had been here before, and had walked out disappointed every time. Yet, on this day, March 24, 2022, it would finally be the outcome they had wanted when their organization was formed in 2015.

After decades of boys playing the sport in Utah, boys volleyball is official, and with a 10-4 vote, will now be a UHSAA-sanctioned sport beginning in the 2023-24 school year, joining the ranks with 25 other states nationwide.

“We had a lot more hope and momentum this time, but it was so surreal to sit there and hear it announced. We were just in shock,” said UBVA co-founder Jill Davis.

This latest attempt at sanctioning laid 10,000 signatures in front of the UHSAA board along with written support from local politicians, including Norm Thurston of the Utah House of Representatives, who was in attendance at the meeting, to BYU athletic director, Tom Holmoe, BYU men’s volleyball coach Shawn Olmstead and USA national men’s volleyball coach John Speraw.

UHSAA assistant director Jan Whittaker said, “The UHSAA is excited to be sanctioning boys’ volleyball for the 2023-24 schools year. This will allow many boys who have not been competing in a sport for their school the opportunity to be part of the high school sports experience.

They will be able to benefit from the positive impact that high school athletics has on students.”

Davis said, “It’s a wonderful sense of accomplishment and it was an honor to be in the seat. A lot of people told us it wouldn’t happen, but our grassroots efforts and the community support made this happen. This is a victory for everybody, especially the boys and their families.”

Davis has helped spearhead the UBVA’s effort the past few years to get the sport sanctioned. Her sons, Parker and Price, were part of a Bingham High boys volleyball program who three-peated in state titles from 2017 to 2019.

She, UBVA co-founder Warren Van Schalkwyk and Duke Mossman, who coaches at Wasatch High, formed a collaborative effort of continually gathering statistics and surveying coaches statewide to keep up with the growing interest and participation in the sport.

What they found was: • Boys volleyball is one of the fastest growing sport in high schools across the nation.

• Boys volleyball is one of the largest club sports in Utah. In 2015, the state had 24 club teams; last fall, that number was up to 56.

• In 2019, 81 high school teams represented 56 schools in Utah. This year, 122 high school teams are playing from 64 schools with more than 1,500 boys competing.

• More than half of those 64 high school teams had such a demand in numbers that coaches had to cut players at tryouts due to popularity of the sport and lack of facilities.

• Most of the 5A and 6A schools have full teams with the 3A and 4A classifications having a more mixed representation and the more rural schools in 1A and 2A coming in with the lowest participation rates.

• 53% of the boys volleyball programs pay for gym rentals from their schools in order to play and practice.

• 90% of participants statewide just play boys volleyball and are not multi-sport athletes.

Corner Canyon High boys volleyball director Dan Penrod said. “Over this long process, there have always been a few parents that wanted to get the sanctioning ball rolling, but when their boys were finished playing, the momentum died down. Jill staying on after her boys graduated was everything in making sure this happened.”

Whittaker noted how the Emerging Sports Program that the UHSAA formed three years ago played a key role in the sanctioning of boys volleyball. “That program was created to grow meaningful participation opportunities for student-athletes, particularly for female student-athletes, in sports and activities,” she said. “A sport can be considered for sanctioning after it meets a certain threshold of participating of our students in member schools. Boys participating in volleyball has steadily grown over the past few years.”

Whittaker said once boys volleyball had met initial criteria for sanctioning consideration the UHSAA Board of Trustees looked at several factors in the ultimate decision-making process including: • The impact on Title IX compliance • The percentage of member schools that facilitate interscholastic competition in the emerging sport • Participation in community-sponsored leagues for the sport • Whether other state high school athletic associations sponsor or sanction competition in the sport • University, college and junior college opportunities for participation after high school • Whether the sport is a lifetime sport or activity, easily accessed in later life, that contributes to public health or fitness • Whether the NFHS or other recognized governing body publishes rules for interscholastic competition in the sport • Assistance available for growing the sport from national governing bodies, in-state coaches association and/or in-state officials associations • Significant obstacles to growing the sport, such as lack of facilities, expensive equipment, risk of injury, lack of experienced coaches and officials • The opportunity for student-athletes to participate equally from all socio-economic backgrounds • Whether sanctioning the sport will divert participants from and weaken an existing sanctioned or emerging sport • Whether there is significant competition for student-athletes to participate in this sport outside of school • The length of time the sport has been an emerging sport • The burden on member schools, districts and on the UHSAA of sanctioning the emerging sport • Utah Division of Risk Management concerns and input “This is not a check off list, but are items that were discussed prior to making the decision to sanction boys volleyball,” Whittaker said, adding that each school and district will “make the determination whether they will sponsor a sport that UHSAA sanctions.”

Davis said that the sanctioning of boys volleyball is a “win-win.” “This legitimizes it for the boys and creates stability and consistency across the board under a fabulous umbrella. Scholarships are secondary,” she said. “Plus, county rec leagues can still function for those who were cut from their high school teams as well as those who just want to play.”

teams, has been gearing up to step away from UBVA since 2020 when her son graduated but “needed to stay in the game” to see the sanctioning process through. “Personally, to be able to serve these boys has been a thrill, and it’s an even bigger thrill to betting Utah on the map with boys volleyball,” she said. “I’ll forever be a part of the sport, but this ‘cherry on the top’ is so exciting for these kids and a great way to go out for me.”

“Jill is an absolute angel for doing all of that. She did an amazing job, and it means so much to the boys,” said Olympus High boys volleyball club director Brett Peterson.

Peterson, who has been directing the Olympus boys volleyball program for several years—with Ben Chamberlain coaching the varsity squad—said he’s thrilled to have the boys experience sanctioned volleyball. Peterson’s own experience was competing for two years in sanctioned play in California, and then helping build a club team at Olympus High, where he was a player/coach over his final two seasons, while his mom, Chris, ran the program.

The UBVA will continue to host the state boys volleyball tournament for the next two seasons as budgets, schedules and regional alignments are put in place for the 2024 spring season when UHSAA will take the reins.

of the pandemic which has impacted every aspect of social life and stressed every sector of our local economy in ways we could have never imagined. But today we stand united, as strong as ever! It is a thrill to see people emerge from our “Covid Cocoons” and reunite with friends, family and neighbors. Our city’s early events like REAL soccer games, Hale Center Theater performances, Mountain America Expo shows and even our food truck nights have blown past attendance expectations because so many of us are eager to get back to normalcy and connect in person.

The state of the city also addressed the challenges the city is facing due to the unprecedented growth Utah is experiencing. Strong leadership and collaboration with residents and stakeholders are needed to find solutions to affordable housing, water conservation and infrastructure needs. I am committed, as your Mayor, to bring all of the parties together to be a part of the solution. Beautification Day is coming up on May 14th. I recently gathered a group of business leaders together to encourage more participation in these efforts. We received a very enthusiastic response and a willingness to support the cause.

During the recent legislative session, H.B. 440 Homeless Services Amendments was passed. This bill requires cities in Salt Lake County to help address the winter overflow issue for our homeless population. We have all witnessed the heart-breaking pictures of fellow human beings sleeping

on the streets in the depths of freezing winter temperatures. Over the next few months, I will be meeting with the Salt Lake County Mayors to identify sites where temporary shelters make sense for the community and the individuals who are served.

As a reminder, Bulk Waste Pickup is still underway.

Please take a minute to review the new requirements. Bulk waste piles must be no larger than 6 feet wide by 20 feet long by 4 feet high. They also must be placed 2 feet from the curb and 3 feet from storm drains. To read a list of the full requirements please visit sandy.utah.gov. We all want the bulk waste program to continue so please ensure materials stay out of storm drains- we can all work together to keep our waterways clean and safe!

Expungements

When a person is arrested or has a court case in the State of Utah, that record is a public record open for anyone to access. Expunging an arrest or court record removes the information about the arrest or case from the public record and seals it, and the individual involved can legally tell people it did not happen.

To expunge a case a person must receive certification from Utah’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), petition the court, pay a fee and receive a court order before the case is sealed to public access.

In 2019, the Utah Legislature passed a law, Utah’s Clean Slate Law, to automatically expunge certain low level offense cases after a certain amount of time from the public record without the individual involved having to receive certification from BCI, petition the court, pay a fee or wait for a court order. This program officially launched on February 10, 2022, and cases have already started to be expunged. Full implementation of the law will take time, so a case that qualifies may still be on the public record for several years as the State goes through the thousands of cases that currently qualify. Those who have cases that were expunged through the law will also not be notified.

To see if your case has already been expunged go to www.utcourts.gov/mycase/ to set up a free account with the Utah State Courts to see all the cases you have on the public record including in the local Justice Courts. If you know which courts you have a case in you can also visit or call the court to see if the record has been expunged. To call the Sandy Justice Court call 801-568-7160.

In the 2022 Legislative Session, the State Legislature passed a bill to waive the court filing fee for those who file to expunge any case that either doesn’t qualify under the Utah Clean Slate Law or has yet to be expunged under the law. Currently, the fee is $150 to file in the State’s District Courts and $135 in local Justice Courts. Starting May 4th, 2022 and only until June 30th, 2023 the court’s filing fee will be waived to expunge a criminal record. Individuals will still need to pay a fee with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation to receive certification.

The HHW program sorts and processes these materials in a safe manner to eliminate exposure to the environment.

Water Conservation Rate Structure

Over the past few months Public Utilities has proposed changes to the water rate structure that will help incentivize water conservation as we head into another drought year. These changes were presented in a public town hall meeting and in several public utilities advisory board meetings. After hearing feedback from the public and the advisory board, a final presentation was made to the city council in their March 29th meeting. Springtime Tips for a Safer Place Around this time of year, we begin to see an uptick in the number of residential burglaries in the city. Why and how does this happen? It is quite simple to explain really. As we are doing our yardwork, we often leave the garage door open as we work in the front yard. Once we finish working in the front of the house, we make our way around to the backyard or run inside the house to grab a drink. As we do this, we forget one very important thing…the garage door was left open. Thieves are very opportunistic people, and an open garage door is the invite they are waiting for. In the short amount of time, it takes to grab a drink of water from the kitchen, a thief can enter your garage, take a bike (or any other item) and be on their way.

The obvious way to avoid this is remembering to close the garage door. However, other tips would be to try and keep items in the back of the garage rather than close to the overhead door, especially more expensive items. Thieves don’t want to spend much time looking around, so they generally won’t go to the back of the garage. Try to keep tools and other smaller items concealed in boxes, baskets, rubber bins or garage cabinets. There are also several inexpensive technology items that you can purchase and install to alert you when you left your garage door open.

As always, if you see something…say something. Never hesitate to contact the police if you see something or someone that is suspicious.

Kendall is a Volunteer in Police Service (VIPS). He joined the VIPS program in 2012.

VIPS volunteers assist in the services that the Sandy City Police Department provides to the community. VIPS are highly trained individuals who act as an extra set of eyes and ears for the Police Department performing Mobile Patrol shifts. They report any suspicious activity they see to police patrol personnel on duty. They also help with other community oriented policing functions such as setting up traffic trailers, golf course patrols, ranger patrols of Dimple Dell Park and community events (to name a few).

Volunteers are required to be on shift 8 or more hours every month.

Kendall has always been involved in helping the Sandy community. Before VIPS he played an active role in the Neighborhood Watch program serving as a Quadrant Coordinator and Neighborhood Watch Area Leader. He was also a Mobile Watch Coordinator Volunteer in the late 90’s. When the Police Department started looking into a more intensive Mobile Watch Program which ultimately became the VIPS program, Kendall played an important role in helping through his experience in Mobile Watch.

Kendall has always been interested and supportive of Law Enforcement. He attended the Police Citizens Academy in 2001 which gave him the knowledge to understand the Police Department and Officers and be able to relate to how and why Police do things the way they do.

In 2014 the Police Department awarded Kendall with an Outstand Performance certificate for his role in the VIPS program. Kendall has embraced the VIPS program and has become trained in all aspects of it. He has become a trainer in the VIPS program helping other VIPS members learn the many intricacies VIPS entails.

During his time with VIPS, on top of what is required, he has served as secretary, mobile watch coordinator, vehicle maintenance coordinator and traffic trailer coordinator. Kendall has volunteered 819 hours for the Police Department.

Kendall is the volunteer that every agency wants! The Sandy Police Department is blessed to have his service.

He is dedicated, loyal, helpful, intelligent, and self-motivated. The Police Department thanks him!

The best thing about Kendall is his love for his family and church. If he’s not volunteering for the Police Department, you will find him spending his time and energy bettering his family and church.

$540k donation from Intermountain Healthcare will provide help for domestic and sexual violence survivors

O

ne in three women will experience domestic violence in the state of Utah.

Statistics also demonstrate that one in six women and one in 25 men experience rape or attempted rape, and one in three women will experience some form of sexual violence.

With such concerning numbers, Intermountain Healthcare is donating $540,000 and partnering with the nonprofit Utah Domestic Violence Coalition to assist Utahns who need help in recovering from the impacts of abuse.

“Access to resources is an essential part of the healing process,” said Mikelle Moore, senior vice president and chief community health officer at Intermountain. “The members of the UDVC work together to support domestic violence survivors in a way that makes access easier and the use of funds more efficient. Intermountain is proud to support their efforts ensuring services are available where and when survivors need it.”

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, sexual and domestic violence cases have risen 8.1% in Utah. The UDVC provides advocacy and education to member programs and community partners. Its membership includes nonprofit domestic violence shelters and sexual assault advocacy organizations.

help cover the operations costs of UDVC members. These community organizations provide resources to address healing from trauma such as the reduction of psychological suffering.

Waterford’s summer camps offer students chance to explore interests

I

n one week this summer, middle school students can write, act and produce their own musical. In a different part of campus, elementary students can participate in a chess camp or middle schoolers can get some hands-on experience in programming robots. In yet another camp, students will play a different sport every morning and afternoon for five days, from lacrosse and volleyball to rock climbing and rowing.

These, as well as traditional day camps with eight weeks of different outdoor themes, and many more camps stretching from architecture to sewing, are open to any youth for registration at Waterford School. Each camp is overseen by a teacher who has help from high school students or graduates who act as counselors. Costs typically range from $225 to $415, without extra fees, and details and registration information can be found at waterfordsummer.org.

Waterford Director of Auxiliary Programs Kent Hercules is coordinating the annual summer camps.

“The idea is experiential learning,” he said. “For example, with our traditional full-day day camps, we may focus on soil or water and talk about erosion. We won’t spend a lot of time talking about it, but we

will have a stream trailer outside where we’ll see the water flow through the sediment, and we’ll see how erosion happens and it will be hands on. A lot of it depends on the level of the kids as the older ones will dive deeper into it, but it’s meant to be fun, not like being in classes.”

This year, there is a vast array of options, from intro to Latin culture and language for elementary students to printmaking for middle and high school students. The past two summer camps have been limited because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Another appealing option is for elementary students who want to immerse themselves in the world of Harry Potter and can try cooking some magical recipes.

Or for middle schoolers, to extract sections of the Harry Potter series and learn how it has made an impact into society.

“They’ll learn about how Harry Potter has infused itself into our society, like ‘how does this work of literature enter into every facet of our society?’ It’s in the movies and theme parks, and gear, and even sayings in our common vocabulary as people everywhere talk about muggles or joke about ‘he who must not be named,’” Hercules said. “It’s going to be fun and ex-

ploring the fantasy of Harry Potter, but because we’re Waterford, were going to put in an academic twist into it.”

He expects the songwriting camp to be a hit with high school students.

“We are going to talk about crafting words and lyrics and how those fit together with melodies,” he said.

One of the highlights for Hercules is the end of each camp day.

“We have a closing circle, and the kids will share what they learned, and I’ll get my guitar out and we’ll sing some silly song,” he said. “Summertime is the greatest time to dabble in something and just try it for the first time. It’s not a big commitment. You can spend a week learning about something and enjoying it with some new friends.”l

Salt Lake County uses federal ARPA dollars for affordable housing, water conservation and workforce development

believe one of the most important roles for an elected official is acting as a steward of your taxpayer dollars. Residents entrust us to judiciously use funds to perform essential functions for the community, and as such residents expect that every dollar spent by the government will be carefully scrutinized. I used these principles to cast my vote for the allocation of federal ARPA dollars, which included funding for affordable housing, water conservation, and workforce development. Included are some details about each of these projects.

These funds do not come from property or sales taxes. They are funds given to counties from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocated by the federal government.

These funds are meant to support COVID-19 response efforts, replace lost public sector revenue, support immediate economic stabilization, and address systemic public health and economic challenges. They cannot be used to pay down debt, lower taxes or give refunds back to taxpayers.

We know affordable housing is a huge issue. In 2021 rental costs increased by 12 percent and homeownership costs increased by 28 percent. Low to moderate household incomes have experienced significant supply and cost barriers to access safe and affordable housing.

We know there is a far greater cost to society if

youth end up homeless because their families can’t afford a place to live. Homelessness disrupts educational opportunities and puts them at higher risk of ending up in jail or utilizing government welfare services. This would end up costing taxpayers more than an upfront investment. Stability is key to helping young people succeed.

The Salt Lake County Council allocated $20 million dollars to the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. This trust fund will leverage state and local government funding to preserve, construct, and assist 1,200 units of safe, affordable housing in Salt Lake County.

Utah is experiencing its worst drought in 50 years and water conservation is a top concern. The Salt Lake County Council allocated $2.1 million ARPA dollars to Integrated Water Conservation & Land Use Municipal Partner-

ships. Salt Lake County will partner with cities to implement approved water conservation plans.

The Salt Lake County Council invested $10 million dollars to implement the Workforce Inclusion and Successful Employment (WISE) program. This program is designed to identify effective solutions that empower lower income communities to get education, skills and training needed to engage in the workforce.

It is the goal of the program that by 2026, a net tax impact will be shown by comparing WISE

program expenses with tax savings achieved through (1) increased revenue due to higher salaries and (2) reduced expenses due to less need for government assistance.

Every vote I cast as a county council member comes after thoughtful consideration of how it will impact the county overall, as well the constituents whom I represent in this role. I believe these ARPA funds are a once in a generation opportunity to invest in projects that will provide better opportunities and outcomes for residents now and in the future.

Former NBA coach hosting camp

tah native Barry Hecker, who coached in the NBA for more than two decades, continues to teach the game of basketball to young players. At the beginning of summer, he will host a camp June 7-10 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Sandy (location still to be determined) for boys and girls in third through ninth grades.

“These camps are all about the basic fundamentals of basketball,” Hecker said.

“We focus on quality fundamental instruction, we work hard with a lot of discipline and structure and we have a lot of fun. When these kids walk out of there, they know they’ve been taught and improved.”

The cost of the camp is $85. Being able to share those principles of hard work, teamwork, unselfishness and persistence, along with the physical skills of the game itself,

“I don’t care who I coach or when I coach,” Hecker, who has worked with current Jazz players Mike Conley and Rudy Gay, said. “I simply enjoy teaching the game. It’s great to see a smile on someone’s face as they experience success. If you help somebody, you’ll be somebody.”

Hecker has conducted clinics all over the world for more than 40 years, including many since his retirement from coaching in the NBA. He said he particularly enjoys working with the youth.

“If you teach skills, that leads to confidence and that confidence can allow anyone to do anything they want,” he said. “I have more fun with young kids than with the pros. In the NBA, you have guys who are making millions and they don’t listen. These kids are making nothing and they’ll listen to you.” l

Athletic trainers have an important place at the school

H

igh schools have several coaches and administrators that keep programs running smoothly. A position that is often overlooked but very important is the athletic trainer.

“I overall have liked being a trainer,” former Copper Hills and West Jordan High School trainer Chaz Beckstead said. “Depending on the size of the school it can be overwhelming. Copper Hills is one of the largest schools in the state so that means a lot of athletes.”

Trainers are contracted to high schools to provide health options for the student-athlete. They work for an outside agency and are located at the school to provide the service.

Their duties include pre-practice events like taping ankles or providing physical therapy for injuries with the athletes. During games, they provide coverage in case of injuries.

“It can be fast paced. Sometimes we had four or five events going on at the same time.

It is very time-consuming,” Beckstead said.

Sports trainers need to meet qualifications including board certification exams and state licensing requirements. They provide more than triage or emergency care.

The student-athlete can be diagnosed, treat-

ed, and receive rehabilitation.

“We can make referrals and many will go to their own doctor for treatment. We can save the athlete from going to additional doctors. It is also convenient because they can get treatment right at the school,” Beckstead said.

The student-athlete usually understands the trainer's role, but many parents do not.

“I have had instances when going to an athlete that was injured and the parents have questioned what I was doing. It is understandable that most people do not know what we do,” Beckstead said.

Hailey Pabst is the current trainer at Copper Hills High School. She is employed with University of Utah Health. They are contracted to the school to provide trainer coverage. She worked at West Jordan High School and started at a school in Las Vegas.

“I love working at the high school,” Pabst said. “The kids are hilarious. They can say the strangest things. I get to hear all about prom and the stuff that is going on. High school kids can say some strange things, but it is more about the relationships we can build. Some of these kids are going through a traumatic injury. In the time we work together we can talk about a lot of things and get to know each other.”

The trainers see different types of injuries depending on the sports season. Ankle sprains and strains top the list of the most popular injuries. They also treat swollen muscles, knee injuries and lacerations.

During football season they see concussions

and broken bones.

“It is super rewarding. I get to see the kids grow. They grow from a little freshman to big seniors, not only in stature but in maturity. Plus, I can provide help to them at times when they really need it,” Pabst said.

“Most people do not understand what we do,” Beckstead said. “We do provide a necessary service.” l

Sandy families donate bake sale funds to Ukraine

A

fter hearing about the invasion of Ukraine in February, the Smith and England families in Sandy wanted to find a way to help. But with young kids, what could they do? A lot, it turns out.

Asialene Smith, mother of four, talked to her kids about what was happening. “I showed them an article and videos about refugees. I asked, ‘Do you want to help them?’ And they said yes,” Smith said.

“I didn’t want to lose momentum, so we decided to do something right away. We had done family projects to help refugees before, so my kids have a lot of passion for that cause,” Smith said.

Smith’s kids—two older girls and two young boys—like to bake. She suggested they have a bake sale and donate the earnings to a charity helping refugees from Ukraine.

Smith called her friend Ashley England and invited them to join the fundraiser. Then she called her daughter Savanna who is a freshman at BYU. She came home for the weekend to help and brought some friends.

“Students know what’s going on and want to help. I texted a few of my friends and told them what my family was doing. A lot of them were willing to either make a donation or drop what they were doing to come help with the bake sale.

“It was so inspiring and humbling to see teenagers sacrifice their Friday and Saturday to do something for someone else,” Savanna said.

The Smiths and Englands put their older kids to work grocery shopping and getting ingredients ready. Then the families spent most of March 11 and 12 baking.

That Saturday afternoon the families posted a quick message about the bake sale on social media. Then they set up a table in a high traffic area on Creek Road.

Sandy City Council member Cyndi Sharkey saw the post and stopped by. “Cyndi’s my neighbor. She came to support us and took a photo,” Smith said.

To attract attention, they had balloons and signs in blue and yellow—the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

“So many people saw us and pulled over to buy something or donate. We took cash and also had a QR code and Venmo set up. I think it meant so much to our local community that there was something they could do to help,” Savanna said.

The night before the bake sale, the Smiths researched charities that were helping Ukraine so they could find the right place to donate their money.

“I told the kids we needed to make sure that every cent would go where it would do

some good. We found the Driven to Assist program from the Larry H. Miller Foundation.

It felt like a trustworthy place to put all the money. It’s right here in Sandy, and they were matching donations,” Smith said.

The Driven to Assist program ran from March 4-12. On March 19, they announced their charity drive had collected 250 bins—or 13 semitruck loads—of needed goods from the Utah community to donate to people fleeing Ukraine.

As of that press release, Driven to Assist had collected $3,000,000 in monetary donations.

The Smiths and Englands can feel good knowing they helped collect a portion of those funds.

“Our final total was $1,425.52. Someone came up to our bake sale with a bunch of change. They can know that 52 cents is from them,” Smith said with a laugh.

Savanna and the other young people in-

volved in the bake sale learned a lot from their efforts about how good it feels to help others.

They feel connected to the refugees, even if they are half a world away.

“I feel like we were inspired to do this.

One of my friends has two siblings who were adopted from Ukraine. I follow her mom on Instagram (Kecia Cox, Love Makes Miracles) and she has posted about people they are in touch with in Ukraine.

“My heart aches for these families who are having to leave their homes and also say goodbye to their fathers and brothers who have to stay to fight,” Savanna said.

Savanna is grateful that her parents have taught her to get involved. “I learned from my parents that nothing is ever about me.

“They taught me to put myself in others’ shoes and think about their needs. I need to be selfless and think about the whole picture,” Savanna said. “And the feeling is kind of addicting.” l

CTEC students test cyber skills in national challenge

T

his spring, CTEC cybersecurity students are engaged in a capture the flag competition.

Not the traditional outdoor game where the object is to capture the other team’s flag to bring it back to home base, but more of a series of challenges or questions where students will use their skills and knowledge in cybersecurity to gain points during a set time. The harder the challenge, the more points.

“What it entails is basically a set of challenges or even simple questions, like, what is this called?”

Canyons Technical Education Center cybersecurity instructor Ben Crenshaw said. “Or you’ll have to perform some sort of operation on the computer or on a network. Or maybe you’ll have to decode something.”

During this National Cyber League challenge, CTEC’s five-member team is competing against other high schools and colleges.

“It’s great because it’s watched by the government and by industry.

Once you’ve participated and completed the CEF, you get a report of your skills. This is something you can give to an employer or put on your college transcripts. It’s a fantastic way people can see what they’ve learned and actual skills that they’ve used or mastered. They are linked to the exact skills that industry is looking for right now,” he said, adding they have competed in some similar challenges.

Crenshaw’s goal is to “create a pipeline between education and industry so that we can really get those positions filled. There are about 3 million open positions in cybersecurity in the United Sates right now.

So, we’re really hurting.”

He places an emphasis on students getting these skills because of “what’s going on right now, the effect that cyberattacks are having in the world, on individuals, on our nation. It’s crippling a lot of our industry and our economy; we just need more defenders out there.”

Crenshaw looks at current events.

“I feel what I’m doing is creating the cyber soldiers that can help take over and defend us, especially with what’s going on currently with Russia. Russia is poised for cyberattacks; they’re actually doing it now.

They’re going after data; they’re going to either steal it or disrupt it.

Things like that, all the way up to infrastructure. I mean, literally, they can turn the lights out; the colonial pipelines, they can shut the gas off and those kinds of attacks. That is the reason we really need more people in cybersecurity,” he said.

He incorporates real-world experiences into lessons into his classroom every day.

“We’ve been focusing on the Russian invasion, so every day, we’ll have a cyber briefing or look at a cyberattack from Russia. We look at the news articles, videos and then, we have a series of essay questions.

We’ll spend 15 to 20 minutes on that, then we’ll discuss it as a class for 15 minutes,” he said. “Then, we’ll go into our lesson on a certain skills or topic, such as the principal of CIA— confidentiality, integrity and availability, which is basically the cornerstone of cyber security. I teach those concepts, give examples and have discussions around it. Sometimes, we’ll have hands-on activities, simple things like create ethernet cables for networks.”

CTEC replaced its computer repair program three years ago by offering the two-credit cybersecurity and networking program to 11 enrolled students. Now three years later, the class, which is offered 2.5 hours every weekday morning for one school year, has 20 students and enrollment is growing.

During the first term, students build their own computers, so they learn how “everything fits together.”

The next term, they learn about networks, including the equipment that goes into creating and maintaining networks. In the third term, students are introduced to ethical hacking and use tools to “break into the networks and the computers that we created previously.” The last term, students learn about digital forensics, the methods law enforcement officials use to catch cyber criminals.

Crenshaw, who wrote the curriculum, also has his students focus on getting industry certifications.

“By the time the students walk out of my class after the year is over, they’re ready to really enter the industry itself and they’ll have the industry certifications in security and networking, computer systems.

They’re a lot more prepared. It took me 15 years to get to where I am today, but I can get these students to the same place in three to five, just because I know how the industry

works,” he said.

The program is rounded out with cybersecurity-related field trips, speakers and projects.

Those projects may include the Department of Homeland Defense cyber range, which Crenshaw got a yearlong sponsorship for, that allows students to practice hacking skills in a virtual range environment.

Students also created an enigma machine, similar to the enciphering machines used by the Germans in WWII. “We built one of those out of a Pringles can with all the rotors there.

We used it to teach encryption and decryption,” he said.

With all these hacking skills, Crenshaw also puts an emphasis on ethics.

“Every single day in our cybersecurity briefing, we discuss what happened, how it happened and how we could fix that. What they would do in those briefings is what instills the ethics. It also instills the urgency,” he said.

Crenshaw feels so strongly about teaching students these skills, he also is training teachers.

“Even if you don’t go into cybersecurity as a career, this stuff we’re learning is still important just for you to know because we live in a digital world now. I think learning cybersecurity is just as important as learning to drive. We won’t let our kids go out on the roads without a driver’s license or driver’s education, yet we let them go on the internet, which is far more dangerous,” he said.

“I think we should put this in junior highs. Three years ago, it was taught in colleges. Now it’s in high schools, but it needs to be brought down to junior high level. Right now, I’m one of the few, if not the only, cyber education teacher in Utah and the only cybersecurity class that just teaches cyber,” he said.

Crenshaw, who in February was awarded Teacher of the Year 2020-21 by the Information Technology division of Utah Association for Career & Technical Education (a delayed honor because of the COVID-19 pandemic), came into teaching when he questioned a conference speaker who was introducing wireless medical devices.

“Everyone thought this is a great invention and I think it’s great too, but I raised my hand and asked, ‘What about the security? What would happen if someone hacked into that device?’” he recalled.

As he walked out of the semi-

nar, Canyons School District CTE Director Janet Goble approached him and two months later, “I found myself in front of high school students.”

Now with his teaching license, a master’s degree in cybersecurity from WGU and more than 20 industry service certifications, as well as his full-time position as a vulnerability analyst at Oracle and as head of cyber education at Work Ed, where he provides cybersecurity internships for high school students, he still finds the time to train teachers in the summer how to teach cybersecurity.

“It’s important to get more teachers involved in this, to get more schools offering this, to understand the curriculum and create that pathway for students,” he said. “I am training those cyber warriors who can learn how to defend and attack when needed to preserve information, that data or infrastructure.”l

Utah’s talent in national song contest represented by Sandy native

L

et’s start with the outfit, because Sandy native Savannah Keyes loved performing in it.

The stylists at NBC came up with a pink tailored jacket. It had a flattering V-neck and jeweled lapels that caught the stage lights.

Her matching pink mini skirt had a ruffled, translucent chiffon skirt attached to it that went from around the back of her waist down to the floor. The shoes? Silver cowboy boots. They were a perfect match for the live performance of her country song “Sad Girl.”

“The stylists did an incredible job.

When you’re creative, you have a way you want to present yourself, and this was perfect,” Keyes said.

For Keyes (rhymes with “eyes” and “rise”), the presentation matched both the depth of her dream—being a singer and songwriter, and the scale of the opportunity—performing live on television on April 11.

“Being a singer and songwriter is all I’ve ever wanted to do. There is no plan B. The ‘American Song Contest’ was another step on my road to living that dream,” Keyes said.

To pursue that dream, Keyes moved from Sandy to Nashville. As a 21 year old she was on the reality competition show, “Real Country.” This year she was chosen to represent Utah in the “American Song Contest.”

The live show features 56 songwriter/ singers from U.S. states and territories. Each sings an original song and hopes fan votes will advance them to the next round of competition.

grandma both went to L.A. to watch her perform. “My family is still in Sandy and I’m back here a lot. We’re a very tight-knit family. They are my biggest support,” Keyes said.

Her song “Sad Girl” is available for download, and the video of her performance is online. She wrote the song in January with a couple other people over Zoom.

“It only took two hours. It started with a title in my head. The idea is that you can be an extrovert, the fun girl, the life of the party.

I’m the armchair therapist for all my friends and family. But sometimes it’s just my turn to feel sad,” Keyes said.

Keyes didn’t think it would be her song for the contest, but once she was chosen things happened fast.

“I’ve always wanted to be the kind of artist who writes her own songs. I’m truthful to myself. Sometimes I’ll be sleeping or on an airplane and a melody strikes, and I just have to get it down as soon as I can.”

Keyes gets a gut feeling when a song is right. “The melody, the concept, and the lyrics—it all comes together, and it’s such a good feeling,” Keyes said.

When Keyes found out on April 18 that she hadn’t advanced to the semifinals (she’s in good company—neither did Jewel or Macy Gray), she also learned there was a chance for a comeback as a fan favorite.

“This competition has given my song a life it wouldn’t have had. It’s out there available for download. I know I can rest easy regardless of the outcome because so many of my friends and family have already shown their support,” Keyes said.

of hearing herself on a radio station she listened to while she was growing up.

On April 12, Keyes posted a response to Utah radio station 97.1 ZHT on her social media.

“Hey @971zht My uncle just heard you guys do a shout out on the radio about me on #AmericanSongContest. I am dying! I listened to this station all the time growing up in Utah. This is a dream.”

Keyes knows that whatever the future holds, for her it will be filled with her music.

That knowledge gives her a sense of peace when she performs and the ability to keep

chasing her dream.

“When I performed live on the show, I wasn’t nervous. Whatever’s meant to be is going to happen. What I can control is what I do on stage, how I feel and what I take away from it,” Keyes said. “Through this experience, I’ve met incredible people, I got to record and release a song and I wore the coolest outfit ever. I look at it as though I’ve already won.” l

Union students step into adult shoes for reality check

nion Middle School students recently had the chance to step into their parents’ and guardians’ shoes for a morning as they participated in Reality Town, an opportunity that can stretch from writing a resume to balancing a family budget. Students practiced “real life” in terms of earning a salary to get housing and transportation, take caring of children, paying bills, making donations, and planning for entertainment or vacations. “Their job is determined by their grades, so there is an ‘ah-ha’ moment when they realize, the better

in school they do, the better chance of getting a better job someday,” work-based learning facilitator Cher Burbank said. “They also realize they can’t put everything on a credit card, but instead they need to plan and spend wisely. If they learn now to pay now and play later, they’re learning a good life skill.”

The experience was made possible with help from numerous volunteers, including more than 20 Hillcrest High international baccalaureate, National Honors Society and careers club students. l

Gems, jewels and creativity unearthed at Sandy gem faire

he Gem Faire is a national traveling show that comes to Sandy’s Mountain America Expo Center a few times a year—the most recent was April 15-17. The exhibition brings in all things rock related: jewelers, rock hounds and stone spiritualists. Several booths were run by locals.

“I’ve always loved stones and collecting them,” said Laurie Anderson, artist and owner of Rock Solid Art in Sandy (www.rocksolidart. com).

“I love learning about the properties of stones and getting an idea of the energies they have. Eight years ago I started a business.

My favorite thing is talking to customers and navigating them towards what works best for them,” Anderson said.

One of Anderson’s products is a “slice:” large geodes cut in a slice like a piece of bread, then matted and framed. On the back is information about the rock.

Wire wrapping artist Dean Bennett is also from Utah. He’s been collecting rocks, creating jewelry and teaching classes for 50 years near his home in Syracuse.

“Wire wrapping is a traditional form of setting jewelry. There’s no soldering needed because the wire holds its shape. I use square wire for the setting and the half round wire for the binding,” Bennett said.

Bennett is in high demand for classes, and the Gem Faire gives him a chance to teach without having to travel.

“I’ve taught classes at Hill Air Force Base, and I used to travel to teach and collect rocks, but I’m too old for that now,” Bennett said. For information on classes, call Bennett at 801-589-7945.

Bennett also likes the Sandy Gem Faire because he meets other collectors and gets to trade with them. Some of his favorites come from Utah and Idaho. “Idaho is a good place to find Bruneau jasper. I also like collecting Tiffany Stone and beryllium from the Delta area,” Bennett said.

Vern Rosenstiel of Rockhounders Outreach for Knowledge collects in Delta, Milford and Topaz Mountain. He’s a Sandy resident and the president of the educational nonprofit R.O.C.K. They meet monthly at the Viridian Center in West Jordan.

“Every month I bring my showcase to the meeting and trade with others there. We talk about geology and how to pick out, cut and polish rocks,” Rosenstiel said.

Christine Thompson of Sandy was helping Rosenstiel at the R.O.C.K. booth, and using her saw to cut shapes from rocks in her downtime.

“I’ve been doing this for a few years, and I’ve learned a lot,” Thompson said. Thompson became so interested in rocks she started a jewelry business, Sunrise Meadow Jewelry.

“The Gem Faire happens here three times a year, and it’s nice to have it so close to home.

It’s the best place to meet other people interested in rocks and get supplies,” Thompson said.

R.O.C.K. travels to schools and does educational presentations. At their booth they promoted their junior rock hounding and geology club. For more information, contact them at 801-808-8421.

Another Sandy resident at the show was Mountain Massel, owner of Original Way Crystals (Instagram @originalwaycrystals).

Massel, who was raised in California and moved to Sandy in 2019, felt drawn to the spiritual side of rocks and crystals as a teenager.

“Millions of years of energy, heat and pressure created these crystals, and that energy is still in the rock,” Massel said.

Massel directly imports from places around the world like Brazil. One of his current favorite specimens was a green aragonite from Afghanistan. Not only was the rock an uncommon color of green; it was also unique because the surface had a rounded appearance like bubbles.

“This is something you’re not going to see anywhere else,” Massel said.

Massel comes from a family of entrepreneurs, so it was a natural fit when he joined that background with his love of crystals and started Original Way. He’ll likely be at the next Gem Faire in Sandy July 1-3, and many more after that.

“I started my career with the Gem Faire, traveling to different locations. During COVID, I transitioned to mostly online sales,

but I missed the shows and the face-to-face interaction.

“I find crystals helpful in grounding and calming myself,” Massel said. “People come to me when they are looking for something different, something they won’t see anywhere else. The Gem Faire gives me a chance to share that with them.” l

Jordan baseball players strive for all-around greatness

J

ordan High School’s boys baseball team has a strong emphasis on teamwork. They pride themselves on working together to achieve a common goal.

“My players’ drive this year has been about controlling the controllable and realizing their success comes from a solid team effort,” said coach Chad Fife. “Our goal this year is to bring home another state championship.”

After playing successfully in a tournament in St. George this past March, the Jordan High Beetdiggers are steadily moving forward. “Our philosophy is one game at a time, regardless of who we play,” said Fife.

The team strives for greatness on and off the field, in school and out of school as well. “My players spend hours contributing to multiple service projects in and out of school,” Fife said. “We have spent the last three years being a part of Thanksgiving Hero’s and preparing and serving meals at St. Vincent de Paul’s. My players have learned to recognize when others around them are in need.”

Several seniors on the team have college offers and are taking this year just one game at a time before deciding which college field to dirty their cleats on.

Keeping it light, the team enjoys their tradition of starting out the year with a clean cut hairstyle that will gradually throughout the season become more wild. “We have bleached, mohawked, buzzed, dyed maroon, we have done it all,” Fife said.

Fife uses an acronym for his essential lesson.

“I hope my players learn more than anything to W.I.N., they need to learn ‘what’s important now,’” Fife said. “I expect my players to perform well in the classroom and at home.

I have an amazing group of players this year that are hard workers, respectful, and do many things to help lift others.” l The Jordan Beetdiggers baseball team focuses on a team effort to achieve its common goal of a state championship.

Alta soccer shoots for goals on and off the field

T

his spring season the Alta High School boys soccer team has gone above and beyond to bring their school pride.

“Our seniors are amazing! They are focused on being a family,” said Alta boys soccer coach Mackenzie Hyer. “The team’s success is everyone’s success.”

Entering the home stretch of the season the Alta boys soccer team sits 8-1 in the region and ranked third in the RPI. “Of course we are striving for a region and state championship,” Hyer said.

Two standout players on the Alta Hawk’s soccer team are the team captains Faris Kurdi and Carter Bell.

“Faris is stellar in the middle of the field,” Hyer said. “Invaluable on both offense and defense.”

“Carter leads the team in goals and assists,” Hyer continued.

Alta soccer started in 1983 and has many traditions that are still a vital part of the team mission and drive today. “Some we hold close to our hearts,” Hyer said, “but things like strong character, excelling in the classroom, and being a family are hopefully visible to anyone that sees us play or knows the team.” l Alta boys soccer team. ach year on May 7, Children's Mental Health Awareness Day brings recognition to the value of a child’s mental health.

But The Children's Center of Utah will highlight the importance of children’s mental health all month long.

“Our organization is inviting the whole community to become involved,” said Rebecca Dutson, The Children's Center of Utah president and CEO. “On our website, people can find a whole lot of ideas they can be engaged in or their business can be engaged with. The more we talk about it, the less there will be a stigma.”

The Center is asking businesses to give a portion of proceeds to The Children's Center of Utah during May and invites everyone to promote its mission on social media platforms.

Yard signs are available to put outside a home or business, promoting awareness for children’s mental health. Anyone interested can contact Joni Clark at jclark@tccutah.org to reserve a sign. Or visit childrenscenterutah.org/awareness for more ideas on how to become an ambassador for mental health and raise money for the cause.

“The best thing we can all do is start talking more openly about not just our own mental health but mental health in the family,” Dutson said. “There is so much support.

One of the promises we make to our community is that we do not turn anyone away for inability to pay.”

Supporters are also invited to attend The Children's Center of Utah’s SHINE Gala on Friday, June 3, at the Gallivan Center Plaza.

The gala will be in-person, the first time in two years, and there is lots of interest from long-term supporters.

The SHINE Gala, which started more than 20 years ago, features a social hour, silent and live auctions, entertainment and a buffet dinner. In the past, the event has raised more than $500,000 to help pay for children’s mental health services. Registration is available on The Children's Center of Utah website.

“We’re shining a light on the importance of early childhood mental health and comprehensive mental health care for children,” Dutson said. “Every child and every child’s needs are unique. We encourage families who have concerns about their child to reach out and start a conversation.”

COVID shone a light on mental health issues. Children were heavily impacted by their parents’ stress, the change of schedules and isolation from friends and family during the pandemic. “[The pandemic] allowed for more conversations about mental health. We just want to continue to build on that,” Dutson said.

“The relationships that children have with their caregivers and parents are so important. It’s usually those adults that realize there might be a concern. When we talk about mental health it can change the trajectory of a child’s life.”

The Children's Center of Utah works with children from infants through 6 years of age. Its mission is to bring a heightened awareness to the issue of children’s mental health. Q&A Business Spotlight Desert Star has another rip-roaring musical mash-up ready to make you laugh your abs off with the show “Hunk-cules: I’m Too Sexy For My Toga.” The laughs will keep going with this musical melodrama for the whole family.

Written by Beth Bruner and directed by Todd Michael Thompson, the story opens with our hero Hercules battling a fiendish lion which wins him the hand of the princess Meg. But the King wants someone else to marry his daughter, so they give Hercules three supposedly impossible tasks. Much to their chagrin, Hercules begins to breeze through them so they send Prince Diaredes to foil Hercules and steal the girl. Jump in your chariot and ride on down to Desert Star to find out if love prevails.

“Hunk-cules: I’m Too Sexy For My Toga” runs April 21 through June 4. The evening also includes one of Desert Star’s comical musical olios, following the show.

The “Mountain Music Olio” features the backwoods, mountain music to bring out the granola inside, mixed with Desert Star’s signature comedy.

X marks the spot

H

e might not have a parrot or an eye patch, but my dad has found more buried treasure than any pirate. Inside his mild-mannered dad costume lurks the heart of Captain Jack Sparrow, ready to tackle any adventure with dashing flair and comic grace.

On a blustery day in April, he took a pickaxe and hammer to help his great-grandkids find fossilized shells and pieces of quartz on the side of a mountain near his home in central Utah. He was excited about every discovery, and everywhere he looked, he saw treasure.

He pointed to the west and said, “That mountain is full of blue agate.” He pointed down and leaned in to whisper, “We’re standing on the biggest gold mine in the state.” He pointed east to where dinosaur bones hide in the hills and pointed south to Native American sites where he’s examined petroglyphs and rock paintings.

I’ve explored with Dad many times, usually only finding spiders, cacti and the occasional rattlesnake. He can stick his hand in a hole in a rock and pull out gemstones, old coins and a jackalope skull.

Dad’s always had a sense of adventure. If he could make a living exploring

ghost towns and spelunking in caves for lost treasure, à la Indiana Jones, he’d be the happiest man on earth.

With his keen, scientific mind, he built model airplanes and assembled rockets that exploded in midair, not always on purpose. He’d ignite a mini cannon on the Fourth of July that freaked out the neighbors, cracked a basement window and set off car alarms. We’d run inside and hide like the Feds were after us. They probably were.

For him, life has been one big treasure hunt. He often takes his metal detector to parks and always shows up when a road is being dug or a house demolished.

Never one to pass up a good conspiracy theory, Dad talks about his close encounters with UFOs, ghosts, the Illuminati and home teachers. He also plays the accordion, although how can you tell if someone does that well?

He’s a master woodworker, making toys, banjos, ukuleles and violins that he donates to teens. He cuts and polishes the stones he finds to make necklaces, and he’s been known to set a trap or two for Santa Claus. He’d frighten us with scary stories before bedtime, stories he insisted were true, which made it worse.
