andy residents will likely be voting slightly differently in this year’s municipal elections after the city council advanced a resolution to adopt a ranked-choice voting system during its April 12 meeting.

In a ranked-choice voting system, voters have the option to rank multiple candidates according to their preference, rather than being limited to voting for a single candidate.

It’s an increasingly popular voting system that has been adopted in large cities like San Francisco and Minneapolis and even for statewide elections in Maine.

So what’s so significant about ranking multiple candidates rather than voting for just one?

“It’s just better for voters, because they get to freely vote for whoever they most support, even if that candidate isn’t favored to win,” explained Stan Lockhart of Utah Ranked Choice Voting, an organization dedicated to promoting the system throughout the state.

This can be more easily seen in the context of partisan elections. A voter may favor a third party candidate, but worry that a vote for that candidate is a wasted vote, since third party candidates almost never win elections.

Alta theater students learn to hang onto the wild ride this year

I

t’s been a roller coaster year for Alta theatre students and their director Linze Struiksma, but as the season has had its ups and downs, they’ve learned to hang on for the ride.

From the get-go, Alta students were uncertain about requirements to perform this year, but excited to be on stage in their new performing arts center, which was completed during last spring’s mandatory soft closure of schools during the initial impact of COVID-19.

They moved their musical, “The Little Mermaid,” from fall to winter and instead performed a showcase about love and connections that the students could perform in small groups to reduce the chance of exposure during the pandemic.

“We were looking at our season with several pushbacks, quarantines, shutdowns—and we knew this would be a really different year,” Struiksma said.

With their musical’s performance, came the positive welcome back from the Alta community.

“These kids were willing to do it and work really hard to do it. We were so stoked to just do a full show with a live audience again. They did really, really well and heard positive feedback from our community,” she said. “It was great to work with nice equipment and a beautiful setting.”

With that experience came a rush of emotions, Struiksma said.

“Some were really excited, others were stressed. Some feared it would be canceled so they needed motivation.

There certainly has been different feelings we’re working through, not just stage fright or butterflies,” she said.

hearsing again—perfecting their region pieces which were selected to move on to state. Regional competition held oneacts in-person and individual events were videotaped and submitted.

Even with individual events being virtual, the students won Sweepstakes, placing first overall. They also grabbed third place for their student-written oneact with Dylan Thomas being named best actor and Caleb Christensen earning the best supporting actor award. Twelve students also medaled, placing in the top three.

The April 17 state competition was slated to be in-person.

“We have a shot to do well,” Struiksma said. “All our seniors are moving on and we’re working on our pieces today, talking about our goals and making sure we get on it. We want to make sure we’re our best and hit it.”

In between region and state, 15 students performed two shows of an hourlong murder mystery and then, the theatre season of ups and downs will finish in May with Theatre 4 students directing a younger cast in one-act plays, giving

“We welcome students who have an interest and often have some trying theatre for the first time and it’s a wonderful leadership role for our seniors who have some experience,” Struiksma said.

“We’ve had a lot to juggle this year and it’s taken more energy to rehearse in masks and give 110%. I’ll be a ready for a nap after this year.” l

Continued from front page voter can rank their preferred candidate as their top choice, followed by their second choice. If their third party candidate gets eliminated, the vote count would then incorporate their second choice.

Because the ranked choice voting system can accommodate a large field of candidates, it also eliminates the need for a primary election. That means a shorter and less expensive campaign season.

“People start campaigning around Labor Day, rather than throughout the whole summer,” Lockhart said.

It can also lead to more civil campaign discourse among candidates. Whereas a traditional general election pits two candidates against one another in a way that incentivizes attacks against one another, the ranked-choice voting system encourages candidates to build broad coalitions of support.

“Instead of focusing on your base, you go outside your base and go to every voter.

It’s a different style of campaigning where you need to make your case to all voters,” Lockhart said. “Instead of attacking your opponents, there’s an incentive to be civil with your opponent and focus on issues.

Being articulate on the issues is what wins ranked-choice voting elections.”

Other Utah cities have already implemented the system and found it to be beneficial. Payson and Vineyard were the first

to try it under a pilot program authorized by the state legislature in 2018. A survey of voters in those cities found that 82% of respondents wanted to continue using ranked-choice voting in future elections.

Following their success, the legislature passed another bill to open up the possibility for any city in the state to pursue.

Councilmember Zach Robinson spoke positively about the idea of bringing ranked-choice voting to Sandy.

“I think this is a good idea. I think we should do this in 2021…I think it’s a way for additional candidates to run and get involved in the election process. I see this as taking away some of the power of the incumbent, and I like that. I see this as the way of the future.”

“I’m hoping it has a side benefit of giving voters a greater sense of gratification that the candidate they voted for won—it may not have been their top choice, but maybe it was their second choice,” said Councilmember Cindy Sharkey.

Some concerns raised by other council members included how this change would affect the schedule of financial disclosure statements as well as whether or not it was too late in the 2021 election cycle to make such a change.

By a 6-1 margin, the council voted to move a resolution forward to their next meeting for a final discussion and vote. l

Canyons Online to launch in fall, program met with caution by some online learners’ parents

T

he Canyons Board of Education unanimously approved the launch of Canyons Online, a technology-driven educational initiative for grades three through 12 that will begin this fall. It will replace the existing Canyons Virtual High School.

“This past year has taught us how important in-person instruction is because of relationships and connections students make with teachers and their schools,” Canyons School District Superintendent Rick Robins said on March 31. “What it also has taught us is how we can deliver education virtually.

Some of our students have flourished online, while others have missed those relationships in our schools. We realize we can offer our students the flexibility of online learning while blending it with those connections.”

That ability to make and maintain connections with their neighborhood schools is what makes Canyons Online unique among other online-learning programs, he said.

Canyons Online elementary-age students will be able to participate in beforeand after-school music programs, science fair and debate. Middle-schoolers enrolled in Canyons Online can take electives at the local school, plus compete in science fairs and debate. Canyons Online high school students will be allowed to dual enroll so they can have full access to high school programs.

“We’re re-establishing relationships with kids who have stayed online with their neighborhood schools to build that instruction and connection into Canyons Online,” Robins said. “The blended online format will have the academic component, whether it’s support and remediation or acceleration, plus the connection to their neighborhood school. This is really at the heart of what personalized learning can be.”

Those changes sound better to a Canyons School District parent of an online elementary school learner, who asked not to be identified since the student has severe anxiety.

“I haven't looked at it in-depth yet, but that sounds like a good step,” the parent said.

While the parent has been told this year that there were no extra activities allowed at school, choir was offered. The online learner was denied the opportunity to come into the school, even after school, for spring photos.

“We were told that the school was not allowing ‘outside people’ in for picture day,” the parent said, who was shocked to think the school officials considered the student “an outside person.”

In the fall, the elementary student was taught with other online students across the district at that grade level and was assigned a teacher, whom the parent said was “always prepared, great at classroom management” and loved by the child.

That bond was broken this spring when more online students returned to in-person learning so the teacher was reassigned to in-person instruction, frustrating the online child.

“They have been asked to be flexible, and they have done it. Kids are resilient, but even a rubber band can only stretch so far,” the parent said. “I have been a teacher, so I understand the needs of the school are important. But I don't think it was clearly explained to anyone—parents, kids, or teachers—that a teacher could be reassigned during the year.”

That has impacted students’ emotional learning, the parent said.

“They aren't little adults; they're kids, and they need trusted adults in their lives consistently. This past year has been scary in a lot of ways. They can't have that fun recess and work time with their peers if they're online, but their teacher's face is a familiar sight,” the parent explained.

The last day with the beloved teacher was planned to be fun, but the parent said the student, who initially was excited about the activity, was crying so much about it being the last day with the teacher that the online learner didn't even want to join the Zoom meeting.

hired to instruct classes in core subjects, said district Instructional Supports Director Amber Roderick-Landward to the school board. Canyons Online high school students can take the online classes for credit, both original and recovery. This move of hiring dedicated teachers to online learning would eliminate shifting existing teachers to meet the demand.

“We are moving away from a COVID-19 response and moving toward a service model,” Robins said, adding that this expansion will build upon CVHS, which has served “its time and purpose. This is thinking much differently about how we provide flexible, online learning for students.”

Funding for the startup and operation of Canyons Online would use federal stimulus money as well as $680,000 from the CVHS budget. This would include the salaries of the newly appointed administrator Michelle Shimmin, 13 full-time instructors, 10 adjunct teachers, one full-time counselor and 10 education support professionals.

Some current online teachers, who asked not to be identified, are concerned since the district initially stated it would limit enrollment with the program in third through eighth grades. That would reduce teaching of several grades to one teacher and they are uncertain as to the expected workload as well as the support they would have now without working with a team.

The Canyons parent said there should be consideration first for students who have individualized educational programs. That wasn’t discussed at the board meeting, only it was stated that students would be selected by a random lottery.

Stephanie Pursglove has a high school daughter learning at home because of health reasons since soft closure last spring. She questioned why students were asked to commit to online learning before the new program was revealed.

“I see their plans, and I think their plans sound better (than this current year online), but I think I’d have to see what it actually ends up looking like,” she said. “It sounds better on paper, but that’s where they initially said these are all the AP (advanced placement) classes we’re going to have; these are all of the honors classes that we’re going to have online.

(Later they said,) ‘We’re not going to have any.’ So, they said we needed to commit (to learning online) in February and now they’re totally changing the program.”

Part of the challenges for her daughter, Morgan, have been the limitation of online courses. Instead of having a full schedule with AP and honors classes, there was just one honors class offered for her. Morgan said she hasn’t learned as much because of that this school year.

“It’s been easy; I haven’t learned a ton—

just the basics of each subject,” Morgan said, adding that the online curriculum would improve with advanced courses and electives.

“People who have already taken the super basic level one classes have nothing really to do.”

Her mother worries that Canyons Online’s description fails to mention electives, accelerated courses or dual immersion, all of which Morgan has needed this past year.

This year’s online instruction, Pursglove said, wasn’t what it was described.

“It was not as advertised. It wasn’t like a normal class where you were in with the teacher every day for class. It was self-taught.

The first semester, Morgan was the only student that was actually tuning into class every day,” she said. “She had a teacher who would just start the class. She’d say hi to Morgan for five minutes, then she’d play this video that she found online. So, the whole class time was just watching a video of someone else teaching. There was no plan for online.”

Morgan’s current English class took more than a semester to study “To Kill A Mockingbird,” a book she read with last year’s honor class in one month. Her math teacher is sprawled out instructing from a couch and others “still have no idea what they’re doing,” her mother said.

Pursglove was told not to worry about Morgan’s educational progress because these courses still would prepare her for college entrance tests, but she doesn’t know how when “the classes are pathetically easy.”

After Morgan finishes her classes by 3 p.m. each Thursday, she devotes extra time to complete course packets to get some other high school class requirements fulfilled. She also is taking an ACT college entrance prep class and the Pursgloves hired a tutor to ensure she will be prepared for college.

“We were able to supplement a lot where I’m not sure that everyone did that and I’m not sure everyone’s able to do that. She’ll come out OK,” Pursglove said.

Morgan also lacked communication informing her of student activities. She’s learned of some opportunities when friends have reached out to give her a link to vote for student body elections or telling her about concerto night auditions.

“The only thing we got was the weekly email,” Pursglove said, adding that some emails to the school have gone unanswered.

Morgan said she has gained the valuable lesson from this experience: to empower herself to learn.

“I am much better at time management.

I am more self-motivated. The first quarter, I totally did absolutely nothing and had to do everything like the last week of the quarter. I would just watch YouTube all day. That was kind of rough,” she said, adding that now she has a schedule for her day. “I can get every-

Jordan High thespians find success in pandemic year

he Beetdiggers have managed to do something few others have done this year, performed live theatre without a major delay, postponement or shutdown of their shows.

“We’re having a strangely good year and a successful year,” Jordan High director Suzie DuVal said shortly after their theatre competition team nabbed both the regional second place Sweepstakes title and had several students qualify for state.

Their competition one-act play, “These Shining Lives,” is based on the true story of women who in the late 1920s and early 1930s, were diagnosed with radium poisoning after working for an Illinois watch factory and how they fought the dangers they faced in the workplace.

“They learned about these women who talked about the lack of health protection, got fired from their jobs when they couldn’t work because of the cancer, and how it turned into a story of workplace rights and made changes that impact us today,” DuVal said.

Their roles earned junior Kayla Siebeneck outstanding dramatic actress with Megan DuVal named outstanding supporting actress.

In the Canyons Online model, Roderick-Landward said that the students will be able to learn at their own pace and their educational activities will test their competency.

At the board meeting, member Mont Millerberg said he was excited about Canyons Online as it has taken the “high points” and has “eliminated the pitfalls” of online learning this past year.

“I am excited about this,” he said. “For a little over a year now, we’ve been using the phrase that we need to reinvent education. I look at this model and I see on the high school level, they have full access to what goes on at the school: If I want to do core classes online, I want to do elections at school, I want to play athletics, I want to do any of those things I can at part of the high school. But I also have my flexibility to do things on my own and I can actually accelerate the pace. I can probably do more than sitting in a classroom. I look at middle school, and even the elementary, and what’s available to where they can still access the bricks and mortar and all the positive that comes out of that, but choose to do some of it, but not all of it. I love the model.”l

This is the second year in a row Jordan has placed second in region; last year, because the pandemic canceled the state competition, they didn’t have a chance to perform. This year, state is slated for late April.

“In the past, it was hard to get a trophy if

we didn’t have enough points or a full team.

This year, the students sat and figured it out and plugged in all the holes, learning scenes in two days so we had 35 students compete in 24 entries and qualify with our team. It was huge and showed their desire,” she said, adding that since she’s been directing at Jordan, students have received state medals, but not a trophy.

“We’ve decided to perform in masks and at region, we were the only team who made

that choice to wear them in our one-act,” she said. “It’s a challenge to work through; it was a great year to work on our diction. We learned to be more expressive with our eyes and body and not hold back.”

That also has translated when they’ve taken the stage at Jordan High. Their final performances will be an evening of one-acts at 7 p.m., May 6-8. Students have written nine plays and each play will be performed on two of the three nights. The night is free, but tickets are required; they are available at beetdiggertheatre.weebly.com/.

hey had an inside and outside game, hitting threes after the defense collapsed on their layups. They could pick a pocket and make plays to win the Salt Lake area regional tournament.

Earning the first-place medal wasn’t the goal for Jordan High’s unified basketball team, said coach Dave Mecham in his second-year of coaching this team.

“It was fun,” he said. “With unified sports, we want them to try the whole time and have a good understanding of the skills.

A lot of these kids are into sports, but don’t have the chance to make the school team so this is a chance for them to play, make friends and shine.”

Already, these players have traded in their basketball shoes for cleats as they plan to compete in the unified soccer tournament slated for May 1 at Murray High.

The team, composed of both athletes and partners, play on the field together, with equal participation as they form friendships, get to play together and have fun, Mecham said.

Unified soccer is a coed sport, playing five-on-five on a field about one-fourth the size of a regulation field. Jordan has participated in unified soccer since 2016.

This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, regional tournaments were held in basketball as well as soccer instead of a state contest to reduce potential spread of the disease through fewer competitors and fans at a site, said Courtnie Worthen, Unified Champion Schools manager who oversees the unified program.

“We’re operating at the same way as oth-

er sports teams, with testing for COVID prior to playing,” she said, adding that teams also wore masks on the sidelines as well as sanitized their hands and basketballs.

This year, 13 teams competed around the state in unified basketball, down from 22 last year. Last year’s season came to an abrupt end before the state tournament when the COVID-19 cases began spreading in Utah.

Soccer team numbers were up, to about 20 teams this year.

“Playing in unified sports is very important for persons with disabilities as it gives them a chance to interact; it may be one of their only opportunities to socialize,” Worthen said.

It also leads to more active lifestyles since many students with disabilities tend to live more sedentary lifestyles, and it gives them a chance to learn or practice their skills in sports, she said.

For their peer mentors, such as Jordan High’s DECA members, it teaches them empathy and a chance to include and interact with their peers who have disabilities, Worthen added.

“It’s a mutually beneficial program,” she said. “The best things are the inclusion, the friendships they create, how the athletes are celebrated and are included in school activities.”

Unified basketball is in its second year while soccer was established seven years ago about the same time as unified track.

“Most of the schools prefer team sports so we haven’t put as much emphasis on track,” she said, adding that both soccer and

track are sanctioned UHSAA sports.

Mecham said that if Jordan High expands to include unified track, he’d be interested in coaching. But for now, of the approximate 150 Jordan students with disabilities, Mecham said he has the same base team in both sports, along with many of the same partners.

He also hopes some boys soccer team members will help mentor the athletes in passing drills.

“It gives them a chance to know and play sports with new friends and have fun,” he said. “With basketball, we had two or three practices where we went over simple defense—put your hands up—and a simple offensive play where we directed the players to move here and look for the ball. We told them if you’re open, shoot. They already had a good understanding of it. But soccer is our sport. They know if you see someone open, hook them a pass, or if you’re close, shoot.”

The fun comes in watching the team come together, form friendships, bond with their opponent and celebrate afterward.

“We always have a celebratory pizza party afterward,” he said, adding that he’s uncertain what it will look like this year during the pandemic. “These students create a connection and remain friends.” l

‘The Hive’ advanced to statewide robotics tech challenge

verything was going smoothly for The Hive.

The Beehive Science & Technology Academy robotics team did well in the April 10 state tournament qualification rounds and heading into the playoffs, they were seated fourth—a key position as the top four teams select two alliance teams’ robots that complement their own robot to accumulate the most points in the FIRST Tech Challenge’s Ultimate Goal.

After selecting their alliance, the Hive and their partners’ robots faced their opponents for the best two out of three matches; the winner was to advance to the finals. The two teams on each side had their robots ready in the 12-foot by 12-foot playing surface; the four robots were ready to battle to see which alliance could get the most points.

The robots began with 30-second autonomous period where teams had preprogrammed or used sensors to have their robots move a wobbly goal to a certain place on the playing field or launch rings into goals stacked at different heights to earn points. They also could gain points for each power shot that was knocked down from the launching zone.

Then, the teams’ two drivers picked up their controls for a two-minute period where, again, they battled for points by getting rings in the goals. At the end, they could also put rings on the wobbly goals and move those goals over the edge of the field for points.

After splitting the first two matches, The Hive’s alliance won the tiebreaker and advanced to face the three-team Park City alliance in the finals.

Then, momentum shifted. The other alliance made about every goal and point they could accumulate, especially in the final match, amassing 425 points, the highest score worldwide this year for the Ultimate Goal game, it was announced.

The Hive and its alliance finished second.

They have been there before, said senior Austin Grant, who is in his fourth year in the FIRST program.

“The last two years we’ve been in the finals in both Wyoming and Utah,” he said at Freedom Prep in Provo, the tournament The

Building their robot to accomplish so many tasks for the challenge wasn’t easy. For the past eight months, two hours every day after school, the team spent building, programming, coding and often times, rebuilding it and its components. Approaching competitions, teammates would stay late into the night to fine-tune the robot.

After the team’s first contest at West High, Grant said they rebuilt the ring gathers and its belts.

“Those two changes alone were massive,” he said between rounds in Provo. “It’s doing well here; we’re proud so far.”

Grant also has competed with FIRST Robotics Competition, which has robots, generally up to about 120 pounds, and a larger playing field. FRC teams can have an unlimited number of high school students while FTC teams are limited to 15 students, seventh through 12th grade, and the robot must fit in an 18-inch cube.

“I didn’t like being on a huge team where I only did a subset of what was going on with the robot,” he said. “I like working together on a small team where everyone has a big part of it.”

Senior Brinkley Curry also appreciates working alongside her peers.

“I like the teamwork in doing this challenge; being on FTC is a different experience than other teams,” she said. “We work as a team to plan, fundraise, create a business plan—more than just design and program the robot. We also do outreach and service. Being on a team like this helps me to think outside the box and solve problems. I might come up with an idea and then, bounce it off the team to see what they think. We’re working together and each of us brings a different mindset.”

Grant said that the principles he’s learning, he hopes to apply to a future career, perhaps as a programmer, computer scientist or possibly, cybersecurity.

“I like hands-on learning and teaching myself; it’s a good way to really understand and get a grasp of what’s going on,” he said.

The team is joined by senior Josh Rodriguez, sophomore Kiwano Gutheea and freshman Tanner Kener.

While this year’s world championships has been canceled, Curry has been thankful Utah has held its qualifiers and state matches.

“It’s fun to meet other people, see what designs they came up with for their robots and work together in a common goal,” she said. l

Sandy residents who sang in choir remember their friend Jerold Ottley

abernacle Choir alumni in Sandy have fond memories of their friend and former conductor, Jerold Ottley. Ottley conducted the choir for 25 years, from 1974-99.

His wife JoAnn helped with auditions and was the choir’s vocal coach. Ottley passed away Feb. 19.

Sue Christensen, first soprano, joined 1981 My parents both sang in the choir, and I got to sing with my mother for three years, which was very special. Jerry and JoAnn are amazing people, and you don’t talk about one without the other.

Rehearsals were fun. We worked hard and we studied. I think Jerry did so much for the choir by educating us on music theory. We became better musicians because of him. He was also very funny and told a lot of jokes.

I always thought Jerry was such a beautiful, iconic figure up on the podium with his white hair. He just had this presence about him. He’s still that recognizable icon.

Todd Morris, first tenor, joined in 1985 I auditioned with Jerry and we had some great experiences. Once on our Israel tour we got a chance to stop for a while at the Dead Sea. I had decided that I wanted to swim in the Dead Sea, so that morning I put

on a swimming suit under my clothes.

Our buses stopped at the Dead Sea, and there isn’t much there. Everyone was just

looking around, and I went around a little hill and peeled down to my swimming suit.

I got in and went swimming and everyone was envious.

As I came out of the water, Jerry and JoAnn were there. They came up and serenaded me—in harmony—with the old song, “Once I Went a Swimmin’ Where There Were No Women.” They had the greatest sense of humor, and I think I’m the only one to have the distinction of being serenaded by them. The two of them were connected at the hip.

Glenna Roundy, first soprano, joined 1990 and 1999 We had such a tight-knit feeling in the choir of friendship and family. When Jerry passed, we all reached out to each other because we felt that void and missed him. He was so loved, and it’s been hard to lose him.

What I loved about singing with him was that he not only loved the music he directed, he loved the people he directed. He cared about our testimonies, he cared about our welfare, and we knew it. And he had such a great sense of humor!

I left the choir in 1998, but I cried every day and I knew I needed to go back. I had to audition again and I was so nervous. I was sitting in the office waiting for my turn. Then I heard Jerry say, “Is that a Roundy voice I

hear?” He knew me by my voice! And he cared about me.

Karla Burkhart, second alto, joined 1981 Bruce Burkhart, bass, joined 1976 Jerry had a wonderful sense of humor.

He was very humble and fun to be around.

He wasn’t one of those people who thought he was better than anyone else. He also liked my (Karla) poetry and tried to get someone to set it to music. So I dedicated a book to him.

We watched Jerry’s funeral service and it was very nice. His daughter Allison’s tribute to her dad was wonderful. We’ve known her since she was a little kid, and their son retired to care for his parents.

JoAnn and Jerry were a package deal.

She watched out for him and he watched out for her, and they did everything together. In rehearsals we worked very hard, but Jerry always made it enjoyable.

JoAnn was a wonderful voice coach.

She taught me (Karla) how to do it without straining. She was wonderful that way.

It was because of her that I’ve been able to sing as long as I have. For me singing is like going into another world. Singing is part of breathing, and working under Jerry taught me that. l

Sandy father and son team create outdoor skills videos channel on YouTube

ic Rowberry of Sandy said he could tell his 40-year professional career in the Boy Scouts was ending when The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints decided to discontinue their involvement in the program.

“I loved my career in Scouting. But I was close to retirement and I saw [the downsizing] coming. They started to consolidate all the Councils and I hung on for as long as I could, but I knew I needed to find something else,” Vic said.

Rowberry’s love of scouting started when he did the program with his three brothers.

Then as a teen he got the opportunity to work in the aquatics program at Camp Steiner.

“Everything in aquatics appealed to me: canoeing, rowing, scuba diving and swimming. I worked my way through BYU as a swimming and canoe instructor. I got a degree in Youth Agency Administration, paired it with a business degree and started working with the Boy Scouts,” Vic said.

Thankfully, he married a woman who loves the outdoors as much as he does. “My wife Carol does a lot of camping. She’s been a church young women’s camp leader where they built igloos and slept in them. She hiked across the Grand Canyon. She loves it.”

The Rowberrys settled in Sandy and raised four outdoor-loving sons. Vic did a lot of work at Boy Scout properties used by the

Church, young women camps and Boy Scout Jamborees.

Then Vic’s son Tim did two things that set the wheels in motion for a second career for Vic: he invested in crypto currency and decided to become a filmmaker.

“About 10 years ago Tim told me he’d sell the crypto currency to me if I gave him some cash so he could buy film equipment, so I did. I never would have invested in crypto on my own, but it ended up paying off big time,” Vic said.

And just like that, three seemingly unrelated things came together. “Tim became a

filmmaker, I was getting out of scouting and we had capital from the crypto currency.

“I noticed that people online wanted tips on outdoor skills. So Tim and I tried out an idea: we made a video of me showing outdoor skills and posted in online. We got a great response and decided to make more,” Vic said.

With Tim as videographer and editor, and Vic’s vast skill base, they started posting videos once a week. The YouTube channel Outdoor Skills Made Easy, or OSME, was born.

“Things really took off when COVID hit last year. We found there were a lot of people who wanted to know the basics of outdoor

skills. So for example, this past April was canoeing month —we posted short videos on launching, different kinds of strokes and rescues,” Vic said.

All the Rowberrys’ videos and posts can be found on their website, www.osme.tv. Their videos have had hits and comments from people all over the world. “About 40% of our audience is in the UK, then the rest is mostly in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand,” Vic said.

The Rowberrys have produced about 35 videos to date, and have over 1,400 followers.

Tinfoil dinners and Dutch oven cooking videos have been favorites, along with winter camping hacks and 72-hour kits.

So for anyone who thought scouting skills were a thing of the past, or that a “seasoned” scoutmaster can’t be taught new tricks, the Rowberrys proved there is a way to marry technology with the outdoors.

“The technology has given us an avenue to reach more people and teach survival skills.

I get to work with my son every week which is really cool—we work very well together. I’ve been invited speak and demonstrate for youth groups,” Vic says of his new career.

“Maybe in the future we’ll take people out and do some on-site training—that would be fun. But right now our emphasis is sharing what we know with a lot of people out there who want to learn outdoor skills,” Vic said. l

South Valley Chamber wants COVID business recovery to be more inclusive

he South Valley Chamber and United Way of Salt Lake held a roundtable meeting March 26. The focus was recovering and rebuilding business in Salt Lake County in a deliberately inclusive way.

“We all know that 2020 was a rough year. But in the circles that I operate in, I know that 2020 wasn’t the start of some of our biggest challenges as far as equitable opportunities. United Way has focused for a long time on community problems, and these problems were magnified in 2020,” said Bill Crim, CEO of United Way of Salt Lake.

The South Valley Chamber supports business growth in Sandy, Draper and Riverton. They came together with United Way and Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson for the presentation “Opportunity for All: Building Equitable Communities.”

“We know that things like income, education and health coverage vary widely among different groups in society. It’s the happenstance of where we’re born and the parents we’re born to that determines our access,” Crim said.

Crim’s statistics showed that Utah follows the same patterns as the rest of the country, where minorities are at a disadvantage.

“But there is good news about living in Utah. Utah is the No. 1 state in the coun-

try for volunteering and charitable giving.

We’re a compassionate group of humans,” Crim said.

Crim turned the time over to Wilson, who said she feels like the pandemic response is giving the community a generational opportunity. “It’s such a transformative time,” Wilson said.

Wilson described her CODA team: the Council on Diversity Affairs. After the initial emergency pandemic response in Salt Lake in spring 2020, the CODA team was consulted to ensure the response had a connection to the community.

“There was so much going on. I felt vulnerable during the dark, early days when COVID started. I’d walk into our emergency command center where we always had CNN on, and I’d see the red bubbles of ‘infection’ spreading on the map,” Wilson said.

As Wilson looks to the future, CODA’s broad approach will make sure that diverse needs are considered in initiatives ranging from aging services to infrastructure. “And everything we’ve done has been through partnerships with groups like United Way of Salt Lake,” Wilson said.

Wilson also recognized the mistake of not getting someone “at the table” sooner to consider how COVID might discriminate. “[No one was] looking at how people

of color were not being tested at the same rate, or how they were impacted or dying at a higher rate. As a mayor I was trying to take a stand against discrimination, but I didn’t think to get someone there at the beginning.

I got someone there early [to look at those issues] once I realized,” Wilson said.

Wilson tried to create partnerships between her office and businesses and schools.

“We utilized low-cost loans for businesses. We’re seeing how we can help women-owned businesses. We pulled in students who weren’t able to travel for internships and gave them internships here.

“We also figured out that kids have been left behind and haven’t had access to technology or their teachers. The schools are overwhelmed. So we’re using our partnership with United Way to reach those people,” Wilson said.

Notable attendees of the meeting included former Rep. Rebecca Chavez-Houck; Laura Stireman of Workers’ Compensation Fund; Sarah Wright, executive director of Utah Clean Energy; Rep. Jefferson Burton, Army Major General, retired; Olivia Scott of United Way; Scott Sperry, COO of O.C. Tanner Company; former Rep. Eric Hutchings; and Deputy Mayor of Salt Lake County Kerri Nakamura.

es of finance and social inclusion when he asked how our local governments will utilize government stimulus money to improve infrastructure in neighborhoods that have been historically left behind.

“Our amount for Salt Lake County is $200 million. We’re waiting for clarification from the federal government on how the money can be spent. Digital access is something they approved, so that will be a priority,” Wilson said.

Wilson said that there was a multimillion-dollar budget loss last year and a hiring freeze, so that’s part of their consideration for the funds. But there isn’t as much of a rush on how to use the funds.

“The last stimulus fund (in 2020) we had to use within a year. We’re not as rushed with this stimulus because we have until 2024. So we’re looking long-term and shortterm,” Wilson said.

Now that the dialogue is open among all the different groups in Salt Lake County, Crim hopes there will be action.

“Meetings are a path to action. If you want to fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,” Crim said. “It’s unknown what the effects of the pandemic crisis will be on youth, education, equity and helping refugees. But working with Salt Lake County on this has been inspiring.” l

BRAD BUR N BRIEF Dear Sandy Resident, We have received many questions about the future of Little Cottonwood Canyon and plans to improve traffic. I wanted to give you an update on what the process looks like and where the Sandy City administration stands on this issue.

When addressing transportation solutions for Little Cottonwood Canyon, Sandy City has four main priorities: • Protect the watershed in the Little Cottonwood Canyon, which is an important source of Sandy’s water system • Remove the number of cars on the road to increase safety and reduce travel times • Ensure that traffic leading to the canyon is mitigated • Elevate the experience of visitors who are utilizing the ski and outdoor recreation opportunities and improve the quality of life of residents who live around Little Cottonwood Canyon UDOT is currently conducting an EIS on transportation solutions in Little Cottonwood Canyon. This study focuses on three modes of transportation: expanded bus service which could include a dedicated bus lane, a gondola system, and a COG rail system. You can learn more about the UDOT EIS study and fill out a form to provide UDOT with your opinion on what should be done to address the traffic in the canyon at littlecottonwoodeis.udot.utah.gov. No major decisions will be made until this study is completed either late in 2021 or early 2022.

The solutions being studied by UDOT would help to protect the watershed and reduce the number of cars on the roads. However, it would not address the traffic concerns leading up to the mouth of the canyon nor what kind of experience visitors and residents will have.

Sandy City administration and staff have made a formal request for UDOT to provide an additional traffic study to understand how to move people through the city to the canyon without affecting the quality of life for Sandy residents. Furthermore, a canyon-use study will be critical to provide data on whether the canyon trails, resources, and ski resorts can handle an increase of people that a mass transit system would provide.

Please stay involved with this discussion. The best decisions will be made with input from residents and anyone who enjoys and values our beautiful canyons.

Sandy City’s Property Maintenance Code is intended to build on existing community strengths by providing appropriate guidelines and measures to help neighborhoods remain strong and vibrant. A large part is maintaining property landscaping. How you maintain your landscaping affects the appearance of the community as a whole. In an average year, Code Enforcement officers are called out to over 200 cases that relate just to weed maintenance.

Landscaping (including, but not limited to grass, sod, ground cover, trees, or shrubs) must be kept in healthy, neat, and orderly appearance. It must also be kept watered, healthy, and free of weeds. Xeriscaping and other waterwise landscaping is encouraged and many great ideas can be found on our Public Utilities Department website bit.ly/SandyConservation.

Additionally, weeds and grass should not reach a height taller than six (6) inches at any time. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Code Enforcement Division at enforcement@sandy.utah.gov.

Spring Watering Tips At this point in the year, you are probably eager to start watering your lawn on the first sunny day.

But, in fact, you might be better off waiting until later in the spring season. The snowmelt here in Utah should keep your soil well-hydrated for the first couple weeks of spring. During this period when grasses are just coming out of dormancy, overwatering can do more harm than good. Typically, a good deep watering once a week will be sufficient for your lawn. However, it may be necessary to water more frequently as the temperatures rise and the rain slows, leaving your soil dry. If you begin watering too frequently early in the year, your roots remain shallow which makes your lawn dependent on frequent watering. By waiting to water, you can encourage the root systems of your lawn to grow and reach further into the soil for moisture (strengthening their hold in the ground).

Typically, you should wait until the days become consistently hot and dry to start watering. Most lawns need 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week—either from rain or watering—to soak the soil that deeply.

That amount of water can either be applied during a single watering or divided into two watering sessions during the week.

Watering in the morning (before 10 a.m.) is the best time for your lawn; at this time, it is cooler and winds tend to be calmer so water can soak into the soil and be absorbed by the grass roots before it can evaporate. If you must water in the evening, try to give the grass blades enough time to dry before nightfall.

The later you water, the greater chance of disease

Schedule a Free Water Check A Water Check analyzes the efficiency of your automated sprinkler irrigation system. Trained evaluators will perform the Water Check at your home, business, or institution and will provide you with a customized irrigation schedule. Soil type, grass root depth, sprinkler distribution uniformity, and water pressure will also be evaluated. The entire process will take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.

Water is usually applied too often and left on too long. Turf studies show that most lawns only need to be watered once every three or four days to stay healthy and green. A good practice is to water infrequently and deeply. It is important not to water by the calendar. Watering should be done by the needs of the lawn. Following these simple rules can save millions of gallons of water. The Weekly Lawn Watering Guide: The Utah Division of Water Resources has created a map to show irrigation recommendations based on weather patterns and evapotranspiration rates. The guide takes extensive data and simplifies it into how many days per week to water based on conditions in your county. Smart watering systems: There are many different types of smart watering systems, and most systems integrate with in-ground sprinkler systems. Smart controllers can help save water by automatically adjusting watering schedules based on local weather and landscape needs. Rebates for smart controllers are available throughout the state. It is dangerous to dispose of these items in your garbage can or down sewers, and it is illegal to abandon them or pour them in gutters, storm drains, or waterways. Storing or disposing of these items improperly poisons our land, air, and water and may result in both civil and criminal penalties.

New Every-Other-Week Recycling Begins July 1, 2021 For all Sandy City residents with Waste Management services, your recycling will change to every other week beginning in July and details about your new recycling schedule will be delivered to you in June. Sandy City and Waste Management agreed to this updated program so this valuable service could remain in place without significant cost increases to residents. Plus, the positive environmental impact every-other-week recycling will have for the community was a consideration. This change will reduce truck traffic in neighborhoods and conserve fuel consumption, steps that support the Sustainable Sandy 360° initiative. Former Sandy Racer Pierce Brown’s road to Supercross

M

any have dreamed of being a motorcycle racer and for one lucky Pierce Brown, he is living that dream. Brown, whose hometown is listed as Sandy, returns to Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium for Monster Energy AMA Supercross.

“It was unreal last year and a dream come true! I went to the events when they were here (at Rice-Eccles stadium) when I was younger,” Brown said. “My dad got me into riding bikes when I was 3 years old...”

and it gave me fire to keep moving forward and I’ve always pushed through the injuries,” Brown said. “When I got back on a bike after my injuries everything came back naturally and it was so much fun to me. All the second thoughts and doubts went away, and I was happy being back doing what I loved.”

Brown is heading into the 2021 season with a new team as he joined forces with Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/GasGas Factory Racing team.

“The team is awesome!” Brown exclaimed. “It is the same team, but new bikes and new teammates who have been with me 100% of the way. I have spent a lot of time with my teammates who are high caliber riders and take their knowledge and use it for my future.”

His new teammates include 450SX front runner, Justin Barcia, and 250SX teammate Michael Mosiman.

“I try to pick out what I can learn from them whether I’m out struggling at the test track or a race. They can relate to what I’m going through and to learn their mindset on race day and seeing them stress-free is eye opening to me to be better.”

Brown has had made great accomplishments early in his career at the age of 18 as he had three top-5 finishes in rookie 250SX Supercross season, finished second in 2017 Monster Energy Super 250 Allstars and

placed 12th in 2019 250MX Florida National.

“They have been great, and I haven’t had that great breakout race yet,” Brown said. “I feel like I am an underdog and it fuels a fire for me every race. My riding has got so much better, and it has given me extra confidence and with experience brings confidence.”

As Covid-19 has impacted so many events in the sports world, which included Super Cross, Brown’s rookie year was unlike any other rookie season. Being a rookie was not the only hardship he and his team had to deal with in 2020. Having no fans cheering was no fun.

“I enjoy having fans. It brings a vibe you can’t match without them. Hearing the crowd going crazy. It has been cool to have some fans at the track again where it brings the energy up and makes everything a bit better compared to no one in the stands,” Brown said.

Brown has accomplished a lot in his young career so far, but he has a lot of goals and is setting his sights on winning in Salt Lake City.

“I want to win races; I want to be a champion in my career and once I accomplishment them I will always be watching more,” Brown said. “Winning in Salt Lake would be a dream come true. It would be the biggest way to go out with a big and unreal win.” l

Commencements look different, yet familiar during pandemic as schools determine ceremonies

A

ll the pomp and circumstance will be outside for the graduating seniors of Waterford School, Jordan High School, and Paradigm High to reduce the chance of COVID-19 transmission.

“We will be having our graduation ceremony outside on our Sandy campus this year, similar to how we did it last year, but we will likely be able to welcome more guests,” said Amanda Apple, Waterford’s director of marketing and communications. “We have not finalized all the details yet because we continue to experience a changing landscape of guidelines, but we plan to follow all Utah State Health Department and CDC guidelines to maintain all the testing, distancing, and masking protocols mandated.”

The Waterford ceremony for 73 seniors is planned for 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 4.

Senior orchestra members will perform as well as the vocal ensemble, Troubadours, and select third- through fifth-grade students will perform the song, “Irish Blessing.”

A senior speaker has yet to be named.

As of mid-April, Jordan High planned to host two graduation ceremonies, one on Wednesday, May 26 and the other, on Thurs-

day, May 27, weather-permitting. Times to be determined.

“Our ceremony will be on the football field, as we have done some years ago,” Principal Wendy Dau said, adding that families will sign up for which night they prefer to attend.

“This will allow families to have four tickets.

If for some reason, the capacity of the stadium can go higher to say 50% , we will push the graduation to a single night on Wednesday. It will be as close to a traditional graduation ceremony as we can create.”

In case of inclement weather, commencement will move to the school auditorium with dates and times to be determined.

The theme is “Dig the Moment.”

Graduation speakers include Valedictorian Kira Brooks; Salutatorian Megan DuVal; Senior Class President Davion Washington; Student body President Brooklyn Wagner; Graduate of Promise for Latinos in Action Vanessa Gonzalez Pliego; and Graduate of Promise for AVID – Neema Delphine; and seniors Michelle Dominguez and Taylor Tilby.

The commencement also will be livestreamed.

About 70 Paradigm High students are scheduled to graduate at the outdoor amphitheater in Thanksgiving Point’s Ashton Gardens at 6:30 p.m., Friday, May 28.

Tickets are required; each graduating senior will receive four complimentary tickets and families have the option to purchase up to six more at $12 each.

The ceremony also will be livestreamed on Paradigm’s YouTube channel. Graduation speakers will be selected in May. American Heritage of South Jordan will celebrate nine seniors at its graduation at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 26 at The Azalea in Daybreak in South Jordan. Tickets are not required.

To the east, Juan Diego Catholic High plans to hold its traditional ceremony on Saturday, May 29. Attendance is by ticket only.

In Midvale, Hillcrest High will hold its commencement at 9 a.m., Wednesday, May 26. Other details haven’t been announced.

come to celebrate the four 2021 and eight 2020 graduates at its commencement exercises on 10 a.m., Friday, May 21 in Midvale Middle School’s auditorium.

Nearby at Cottonwood High, 338 graduating seniors voted to hold a traditional commencement together, which will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, June 3 in the school auditorium. Seniors will be able to invite up to five guests and tickets will be distributed when students pick up their caps and gowns.

The program will include two senior speakers, selected following the May 13 auditions, as well as the valedictorian, salutatorian, senior class president and the student body president. Live music will be provided by the Madrigals and the combined orchestra and band.

The evening of graduation, Cottonwood’s PTSA graduation night committee will hold “Grad Night at All Star Bowling” in West Valley City. Graduates will be bussed at 10 p.m. and the bus will return at 3 a.m., Friday, June 4.

As of press deadline, several other area high school administrators were still determining commencement plans. l

Credit union wants to help students learn FUNDamental financial skills

he Utah Board of Education requires high school students to take a financial literacy class to “gain the information and skills to implement a life-long plan for financial success.” To help with that requirement, America First Credit Union has developed a free curriculum for teachers.

“FUNDamentals is a new program that we’re really excited about. We’re trying to get the word out to school districts and get the content into teachers’ hands,” said Nicole Vipers.

Vipers works at AFCU’s corporate office in Ogden and travels to the Salt Lake Valley to work with school districts as needed. She said the program is a winwin-win for students, teachers and the credit union.

“As an organization, we benefit from individuals who are financially literate.

We believe that process starts very young.

We’ve created a curriculum that’s aligned with the state’s requirements, but it’s also very flexible,” Vipers said.

FUNDamentals curriculum has two full lesson plans for grades K-five and eight full lesson plans for grades six-12.

There are 48 additional content packs or mini lessons.

AFCU reports that as of March, 54 educators were using the program. The lessons are designed to be flexible. The modules don’t have to be done in a certain order and can be adapted as needed for grade level and time.

Financial literacy itself is a bridge between math and ELA, so Vipers said the program was designed to be used “cross-curriculum” by teachers in those core classes.

“We’ve tailored it to the state financial literacy requirements, but also aligned it with the common core requirements for math and ELA. We hope it’s used by teachers for multiple subjects,” Vipers said.

Vipers hopes to get the word out to educators all over the state. “It’s a great resource and it’s designed to fit teachers’ needs. There’s so much content. There are videos, handouts, presentations and certificates teachers can print when students pass off a certain skill.”

Teachers can also use the sign in page to request a virtual or in-person visit from an AFCU employee to speak to students.

“We can send a loan officer, branch manager or credit counselor. Topics are based on teachers’ needs, whether that’s budgeting, loans or building savings. And it’s all free,” Vipers said.

Nominations for one of the $500 classroom grants are available on the America First Credit Union website.

The content is available to public, private and charter schools. Vipers said they also want to make the program available to parents who homeschool.

“These are critical life skills,” Vipers said. “With this program we’re expanding our commitment to elevating financial literacy and making it easily accessible to educators and students.” l

Better than perfect Moms are good for all kinds of things; homemade cookies, clean underwear, and guilt, just to name a few. Although each mom is different, we often feel we’re doing everything wrong when it comes to raising children. Do we back off, step in, offer advice, stay silent, help them succeed, let them fail?

We’re never sure and we’re usually winging it, just doing the best we can.

It reminds me of when my brother knocked the wind out of himself by being stupid. Mom thought he was choking and performed the Heimlich. He couldn’t breathe for two hours. She did the best she could with the information she had.

I love mom but she wasn’t perfect.

Thank heavens.

She cheated at Skip-Bo, had no patience with stupidity, and hated animals with a passion. When she got remarried and moved to a ranch in North Carolina, we found it a unique and hilarious karma. Her emails to me often started with, “Well, I kicked the rooster again today.”

Mom might have loathed poultry, but when the wind snapped her beautiful globe willow tree in half, she mourned it like a family member. Every spring, mom’s garden would bloom with color. She loved ladybugs and butterflies. She’d also hand my daughters a saltshaker and tell them to feed the snails.

Convinced that video games would usher in the apocalypse, mom refused to buy an Atari system, but she sewed puppets to teach us stories from classic literature like Hamlet and Beowulf. (I threw the Ophelia hand puppet into the river, watching her skirts float up around her as she sank to her death.

My childhood was a bit melodramatic.)

Mom could be stubborn to the point of madness, but she was also whip smart and ready to jump into a theological debate at the drop of a Bible.

She’d experienced a lot of loss and trauma in her life and wasn’t a mom who showered us with hugs and kisses, but we never

doubted she loved us. She wasn’t just a mama bear; she was a mama velociraptor when it came to defending her kids.

Mom once told me her children were her inspiration. An inspiration to move across the country.

As a final joke, mom requested each of her children to speak at her funeral. I considered digging up the Beowulf puppets and delivering her eulogy via Grendel, the monstrous creature doomed to wander the earth.

She would have loved it.

Mom worked as a teacher’s aide at an elementary school before she died. (I don’t think the two are connected, but it was an elementary school.) At the funeral, her coworkers told me what a great woman she was. I already knew that.

We often put the dead on a pedestal (which is dangerous because they can roll off and fall on people). But mom wouldn’t want to be remembered as being a perfect person who never messed up, got angry, felt alone, burned dinner, swore, failed, tried again, and again, and again.

If you’re a mom on Mother’s Day this year, that’s the message for you. You were never meant to get everything right. You don’t need to achieve perfection. It isn’t even possible. Just embrace your wonderful messiness.

My mom was better than perfect. She was human.

andy residents will likely be voting slightly differently in this year’s municipal elections after the city council advanced a resolution to adopt a ranked-choice voting system during its April 12 meeting.

In a ranked-choice voting system, voters have the option to rank multiple candidates according to their preference, rather than being limited to voting for a single candidate.

It’s an increasingly popular voting system that has been adopted in large cities like San Francisco and Minneapolis and even for statewide elections in Maine.

So what’s so significant about ranking multiple candidates rather than voting for just one?

“It’s just better for voters, because they get to freely vote for whoever they most support, even if that candidate isn’t favored to win,” explained Stan Lockhart of Utah Ranked Choice Voting, an organization dedicated to promoting the system throughout the state.

This can be more easily seen in the context of partisan elections. A voter may favor a third party candidate, but worry that a vote for that candidate is a wasted vote, since third party candidates almost never win elections.
