ince March, Utah obituaries have all contained a similar thread: “With COVID-19 gathering restrictions in place, a limited viewing and graveside services of less than 10 will be held.” In many cases, this is a cultural shift from what mourning family and friends are used to.

“There’s been a big impact on services,” said Nick Larkin, a sixth-generation funeral director who works at Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy. “We’re trying to follow regulations on handshakes and hugs. I have a hard time with that – I want to greet people, it’s part of who I am.”

“We still have viewings, but it’s just one family group of less than 10 at a time. They have their moment, then they leave and the next family group comes in,” Larkin said of the revised viewing procedures.

“All of our services are still available. We want people to be able to say goodbye and honor their loved ones in a meaningful way,” Larkin said.

Larkin said that mortuaries were cleared as an essential business in January after years of requests. They feel prepared to help families while protecting their staff and planning for a major influx of business.

Elementary students who earned ‘degrees’ may not walk at their commencement exercises this year

f in-session school is out for the year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s just not high school and college seniors who won’t be walking at their graduations.

A bunch of elementary students in four different schools also will be disappointed that they won’t be wearing caps and gowns to receive their certificates.

The elementary students are part of the University of Learning, a program where students can investigate topics to earn university credit toward degrees – technical, associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate – just like the real world.

Topics are student-generated, but students need to meet a set criteria. While each of the four schools – Brookwood, Butler,

Oakdale and Quail Hollow — may have varying syllabus, most have students learning about a topic for three hours and reading two books from the Utah Beehive list to earn a technical degree to completing 30 hours and have to read 10 books to achieve the doctorate degree.

“The University of Learning program makes learning fun and gives students an extra challenge,” Quail Hollow fourth-grade teacher Katie Clifford said. “The kids are becoming self-motivated to learn. They’re getting to share what they love if it’s their ancestry or skateboarding.”

Plus, Clifford said she’s learning more about her fourth-grade students, which allows her to connect to them in other ways.

“I’m learning how amazingly talented my students are in so many ways, whether it’s dance, ice skating, cooking or if they’re learning something new such as how to crochet, how to make a stop-motion video or who was Philo T. Farnsworth,” she said. “One student is making and selling doll clothes and donating the money she makes to charity.”

Brookwood fourth-grade teacher Kathy Smith said a service project is part of the doctorate program; at her school, a student held a car wash in the bus lane at her school to raise money for the American Red Cross. The doctorate, and the master’s degree, are more difficult as they are in real life.

With the master’s degree, students have a 15-hour thesis, which usually is a two-page paper or a PowerPoint presentation — although Smith remembers a student writing, illustrating and publishing a book about animals that was shared with other students at the school.

Both degrees require applications, outlining what the student proposes to do and how it will be completed, which the teachers

then meet to discuss.

“Learning is a process. The students are finding what they’re interested in and pursuing it. The first few degrees tend to be about sports and animals and their interests, then, they learn how they can incorporate more of what they want to learn and do into the advanced degrees,” she said.

For example, fourth-grader Amelia Black said she worked on her associate degree which featured sharing about Mathnasium.

“I was already going there twice each week, so I explained what I learn, how I earn stars and showed my binder,” she said before schools went into soft closure. “I like learning what others are sharing so I’m getting more ideas on what I can do.”

Smith said some students look forward to this and are empowered to want to learn and achieve the top degrees.

“They’re making a real-world connection and understanding that they’re facilitating their own learning. Parents love it as it’s

an extension of what we’re doing in school and it’s something they can do together,” she said.

Fourth-grader Bridget Smit and her family traveled to England where she researched swimming pools and translated that into learning about the longest, deepest and fanciest pools in the world.

“In England, the Jesus Green swimming pool in Cambridge is the longest at 100 yards, but it’s only 15 yards wide,” she said. “This is a good opportunity to learn about things I usually wouldn’t do, and it gives us more of a challenge.”

She added that she spent time reading and playing games with seniors as part of the program.

Bridget said it also has inspired her to visit local parks and playgrounds to rate them and create a booklet so kids can go to the best ones after school.

“I like that we’re doing something extra and going beyond what is expected of us,” she said.

That is something that Oakdale fourthgrade teacher Shannon Prado applauds.

“I’ve seen kids who love this – whether if it’s the student who struggles, but he or she excels outside the classroom or if it’s some who are pursuing a new interest – it boosts their confidence,” she said. “Sometimes, their peers learn about their talents and see them in a different light.”

Prado has had students share about roofing and show how they’ve helped roof their home to telling others about Bosnia, where the student’s family originated.

“Learning happens everywhere and from anyone; this is a positive experience for them,” she said of the 72 students who are slated to graduate at the school this year.

Educators find creative ways to connect with students during school closure

fter schools initially were put on soft closure in response to COVID-19, Park Lane Elementary teacher Susan Homer said she tried and tried to figure out the technology to teach her third graders.

“It was very stressful for me,” said the 30year teaching veteran. “Teaching online just freaked out an old schoolteacher like me. I left in tears one day.”

That day, Homer knew how to fix her meltdown – reconnecting with her students.

“I emailed the parents and went to the kids. I left them packets on their porch and wrote to them how much they meant to me.

Then, I stood back on the sidewalk and saw them. I really, really miss the kids,” Homer said. “I saw their cute faces and I remembered why I do what I do. I saw how much what I did meant to them and that gave me the courage to push forward and go online with new material.”

Connecting with students is a common thread amongst educators as many say they didn’t go into education to teach online. So many of them should get extra credit for finding ways to connect with students.

Altara Elementary Principal Nicole Svee Magann has gone live on the school’s Facebook page with “Magann’s Moments.” The episodes range from reading books to showing students secret places of the school, all the while telling the students that she mises them and all their noise in the halls and that without them in the school, it’s “kind of like ice cream cones without the ice cream.”

“We’re trying to find ways to connect with our students who are isolated and can feel frightened or overwhelmed and just need to see familiar faces and have laughter in their lives at a time like this,” she said. “Our teachers are holding morning meetings and using Flip Grid, where they ask students for responses to fun

questions such as what they’re thankful for or what is their go-to song, before they begin their learning. They’re making connections even if they are not physically connecting.”

Jordan Ridge Principal Melissa Beck also said her teachers were using Flip Grid to communicate with students.

“It’s been good to get feedback in video form that is more engaging instead of a typed response,” she said. “Our teachers are using digital tools to connect with students and parents in more creative ways.”

Butler Elementary Principal Jeff Nalwalker has livestreamed from different locations, challenging his students to figure out where he is – Wheeler Farm, Cowabunga Bay Water Park, or at a cookie store.

“It’s important for students at home to have that human connection to their school,” he said. “For kids, not being able to play with other kids or go to school, is unusual. So, if we’re able to connect with a friendly relationship, telling jokes, reading stories or having fun, it’s a good kind of engagement.”

Nalwalker also challenged for his school to Flip the Switch (a 15-second challenge that originated on social-networking app, TikTok, that typically involves two people instantly switching outfits). With the help of his wife and daughter, he was able to create his video, changing different suits while running.

Not only have numerous Butler Elementary students and teachers participated, it has spread to other school administrators, such as Park Lane Principal Justin Jeffery, who mastered to Flip the Switch, changing his costumes while at his desk.

“I’ve never done social media, but I don’t think people do well in isolation and if this gives me another way to connect with students, then I’m learning,” Jeffery said. “My daughter, who is in kindergarten, saw her teacher on

Zoom and she loved seeing her and her classmates. It was heartwarming.”

Now Jeffery provides online announcements and birthday shout-outs from different classrooms in the building and he’s handed out grab-and-go school lunches in costume.

But that’s not all teachers, administrators and PTAs are doing. Signs in appreciation of teachers, such as from Altara Elementary and Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind, have been posted in teachers’ yards; they’ve also been posted in the lawns of students in encouragement by teachers, including those at Columbia Elementary, Intermountain Christian School and Murray High, amongst others, recognizing their seniors. Signs of encouragement were posted at Murray High to give support to the school community.

And leaders have given support, such as Canyons School District Superintendent Jim Briscoe providing a YouTube video about distance learning and resources and Jordan School District Superintendent Anthony Godfrey posting podcasts for families.

Several Salt Lake Valley elementary and middle or junior high school staff and faculty, with the help of local law enforcement, have paraded in cars through neighborhoods, giving shout-outs to students and seeing signs of appreciation in return.

Butler Middle School Principal Paula Logan took the lead in her school’s parade.

“We just want to say hi to the kiddos,” she said. “We miss them. It’s been a long time.

When they see their teachers and school staff, they can feel special, forge some positive energy and hopefully, we will add some cheer.”

Canyons Board of Education Vice President Amber Schill was there to wish them on their way.

“The parade shows that teachers still care about them during this time of a lot of uncer-

tainty,” she said, adding that her son received a postcard from one of his teachers at the school – one of 1,000 teachers already had mailed to students. “They’re amazing to show how they miss students when they’re busy figuring out how to deliver the curriculum online.”

Indian Hills science teacher Rachel Afualo said that she was lucky to be familiar with the online platform Canvas, although she is still learning “the depths of it.”

But more than delivering her coursework online, her seventh-grade team held an online spirit week for their students to check in wearing a crazy hat or socks, or even a character costume, when Afualo, herself, became a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.

“We want to give our kids a sense of community and normalcy in a world that’s not normal,” she said. “We want to show we still care and are still here for them. I miss the kids. I miss what they do – try to get me to talk off topic or talk over me. What I miss most is not watching them learn with those ‘aha’ moments.”

Many schools across the state took part in a statewide spirit week, spurred on by Salt Lake School District. There’s been messages of hope and encouragement in chalk at schools and contests, scavenger hunts and videos posted by high school student body officers, many who will graduate without traditional commencement exercises.

At Hillcrest High, students used their talents to chalk a portrait of their principal, Greg Leavitt, who had earlier posted a video of himself riding a tricycle down the hall while singing his usual song, “Friday, Friday, Friday is my favorite day.”

“We’re all trying to connect with students in what’s not easy for any of us,” Leavitt said.

“There are many reasons, but the bottom line is we miss them.” l

Continued from front page “We’re a very close family and closely connected to the neighborhood. We took it seriously. We were not hugging. It made it really hard. I think we were the test model for what Larkin started doing with viewings.

It was strange. The whole service lasted about 15 minutes, then we closed the casket and wheeled it out to the graveside,” Romney Jr. said.

Other family members sat in their cars in the parking lot and listened to the live stream of the service. “We’re sad about it, and he deserved better. He was certainly worthy of more. It’s just tough. I’ve learned that the face to face, especially for my mom, is really important. I think it’s hard on the healing process,” Romney Jr. said.

“We’re looking for silver linings,” he continued. “We’re not bitter. We weren’t worried about musical numbers or talks. My sister and I spoke at the grave and my brothers gave prayers. And that was it. Hopefully there will be the opportunity and the energy to meet at a later date with everyone who wants to celebrate his life.”

The family of Sandy resident Erma Yengich acknowledged that after her passing on April 10, it was difficult to have a smaller service, but felt it was their duty to help stop the spread of the virus.

“She was part of the Greatest Generation, and they believed that sometimes you have to sacrifice for the greater good and benefit of society. I think my mother would have been fully satisfied that we did the right thing by streaming the funeral mass and sticking with the guidelines. That is the wisdom of that generation,” Rob Yengich said.

Yengich’s mother was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Sandy.

The family was able to access the church, and Father Samuel Dinsdale held the funeral mass. They kept it to exactly 10 people.

“Father Sam and the other staff set up everything. They showed genuine concern for our mother and family. They were so willing to help and also stay within the guidelines, but do it in a wonderful pastoral way,” Yengich said of the service.

“After the restrictions are lifted, we’ll have a life celebration. It’s not as though it’s a one shot deal. The idea that we step back a little bit and are wise while we get a handle on this [virus], no one should object to that.”

“If Pope Francis can conduct Easter Mass in an empty St. Peter’s Basilica, then we can do this,” Yengich said.

Funeral directors like Chad Anderson, president of Goff/Anderson Mortuary in Midvale and Draper, are thankful when families understand the current restrictions.

“We’re trying to keep numbers at services low. It’s hard to tell a family member, you can come but you can’t come. I find that families are doing a good job of policing it themselves,” Anderson said.

“We offer live streaming services through Facebook and also audio recording services, which we’ve always offered. It’s

not the same, but we do what we can do at this given time,” Anderson said.

Pre-planned services can still be used and Anderson said that Goff is trying to be flexible. “If someone has a pre-planned arrangement, we’re giving them a credit for the part of that arrangement we’re not using. It can go towards something else or be refunded,” Anderson said.

Anderson said that families may not feel the full weight of the grieving process until after the service. “A lot of times the process of grief happens after we have worked with the family. They put on a tough face to get through it. I feel that the viewing is closure, so we’re doing the best we can to accommodate that need.”

Larkin Mortuary offers an online service for anyone who needs help processing grief. “I feel that the grief process has been intensified. We offer a grief resource that is free and accessible through our website.

“With social distancing, the old rules are out and the new rules leave families to figure it out themselves,” Phillips said. “There are many opinions and strong feelings to be considered. There is more quiet time for reflection and processing grief.”

“Yes, we will miss sitting around with family at our church eating funeral potatoes and sharing funny stories,” Phillips said, “but we will do that later.” l

through any hardship is a positive support system. That’s why traditional funerals can work well; we’re surrounded by that support system. Finding a way to still gain the support in a nontraditional way is going to be important,” Macey said.

Macey suggests video calling to connect with people. “You’ll have to take more initiative to rally your support system than usual.

Ask someone to call you every day to check in. Tell people what you need or that you’re having a bad day,” Macey said.

“If you have friends who are grieving, validate their feelings of sadness. If they feel shafted that they didn’t get to hold a traditional funeral, validate that. Let people know you’re willing to listen to the same stories over and over. Call them without trying to force them to talk about the death. And remember that even if they have a good day or week, grief can come back,” Macey said.

Macey also recommends one-on-one therapy, which is still happening with visits on Skype or other services. “With this isolation and the increased anxiety of the pandemic, grief can be compounded. Don’t wait if you need help. [The counseling community] is here, we’re thinking about you and we want to help,” Macey said.

There is no time limit on grief. “The goal isn’t to move on and not be sad. We never want to get to a point where we think about our loved one and not miss them.

There is no timeline, and a gathering can still be uplifting and healing months after they’ve passed.”

“People do deserve that type of farewell, and so does the family. They deserve to see all the lives a person influenced. I would remind people that it doesn’t make that person’s life less valuable regardless of how we celebrate the end of his life,” Macey said.

The Jeppson family is keeping that in mind as they honor their father, Trent Jeppson, a resident of Sandy and former mayor of Midvale. Jeppson passed away April 16, three months after his wife Mildred.

“For my mom, we had the comfort of many friends and relatives close by to lift us up. We were in our normal circles where people would ask how my parents were doing, so when they did pass, it was natural to

How these locals entered the world of roller derby

T

he Diesel sees the path ahead is blocked. A huge jam is directly in his way. But he knows he must get through.

People are counting on him. With determination, Diesel accelerates. He looks for an opening in the jam. Seeing none, he makes his own, crashing through until he breaks free. Now his coast is clear and he can accelerate faster.

Rush hour traffic on I-15? No. Just another Friday evening at the roller derby track.

Diesel, in this case, isn’t an 18-wheeler. He is Robert Holliday, a Sandy youth and sophomore at Alta High School. And for him, roller derby has become a passion as well as a second family. He goes

by Diesel because everyone at Wasatch Roller Derby goes by a derby name on the track.

“I used to skate at the Classic Fun Center,” Diesel said. “I had a couple of girls ask me if I would be interested in derby, so I came to check it out.”

From that chance encounter, Diesel knew this was a sport for him. For his mother, Kelly Holliday, the idea seemed preposterous at first.

“My first thoughts were that this was for girls. It is not a boys’ sport,” Kelly said. “I just assumed it was a girls’ sport

because of what we watched on TV when we were young. I never saw boys or men playing it, so I didn’t know any different.

But he was very determined to come and try it out, so I said we would go see what it was all about.”

“I feel like it has helped me keep my mind focused,” Diesel added. “It helps with school as well, because it helps me keep my stress levels low.”

The roller derby of today is much different than what we watched on television.

There is no high banked oval. Instead, the skaters compete on a flat oval track, with no railings to flip the opponent over. In fact, most of the physical part we remember of roller derby is not there. That’s not to say it isn’t physical, but in a more controlled way, like any other contact sport.

“It can get pretty rough, but we wear a lot of pads as well as helmets to help protect us,” Diesel said.

Play still consists of blockers and jammers. And points are still earned by the jammer passing opponents.

“The blockers try to keep the opponents jammer from getting through, while also trying to open up space for their own jammer,” Diesel said. “The jammer earns a point for every opponent they can pass.”

“After our first session, Diesel wasn’t

hooked yet, but I was hooked,” Kelly said.

“So now we had the ‘derby mom’ that is very into it talking her son into continuing. What we have found along the way is that is has made a huge impact for Diesel, not just to his self-esteem, but to his life outside derby. It really brings a lot of confidence in the person he is now and has shaped him as an individual. It really is an amazing sport for all kids and people of all ages, male or female.”

There are only a handful of roller derby clubs in Utah, ranging from Moab to Provo and Ogden. The Salt Lake club, Wasatch Roller Derby, began in 2008 as a club for women. It has since grown to include men’s, coed and several youth teams, ranging from beginners to traveling teams.

The youth traveling team also includes Lady J, who goes by Keira MacGilvery when attending seventh grade at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School in Sandy. Lady J found roller derby after getting a picture taken with some skaters at a winter event.

Although she hadn’t skated much before, she wanted to try it, and told her dad, Kevin MacGilvery. He wasn’t sure at first, for the same reasons other parents cited, remembering original roller derby.

“I sat here at the arena for a year and

watched every single thing they did because I was worried,” Kevin said. “I wanted to know what was going on and who was teaching my daughter. These guys looked different than me.”

Lady J hadn’t done any physical sports prior to roller derby. She had been involved in ballet and tumbling, mostly individual events and certainly no hitting and blocking.

She was also very passive as a child, so naturally this new venture was a bit of a concern.

But before the year was over, Kevin was just as hooked as Lady J. “What I found out was that this is an amazing culture for kids,” Kevin said. “I have never seen a full contact sport where kids are trying to hurt each other and play hard between whistles, but after the whistle they are hugging each other. It is an amazing thing.

And they keep it as safe as possible for the kids. They have very strict rules about moving them up to more physical teams, knowing when they are safe and when they aren’t safe.

Pretty much her first nine months she spent learning how to fall safely.”

Even local adults are enjoying the sport.

Ciara Jackson found the sport because a friend wanted to try it. Now the 32-year-old mom is known as Big C. “I went to it as my friend’s emotional support and didn’t even try it at first,” Big C said. “I didn’t even put on skates the first time. Then I began to use it as a way to exercise and somewhere along the way I realized I am very competitive.” l

How will the coronavirus impact Sandy City’s budget?

xamples of the coronavirus’ impact in Sandy are plentiful and apparent, from empty parking lots to even emptier toilet paper aisles at the grocery store. Many Sandy residents have had to adjust their household budgets as they deal with lost jobs and closed businesses. The same is true for Sandy City.

By state law, city governments must finalize the budget for the next fiscal year by June. Putting together that budget is a process that takes several months and countless hours of work. And that’s if you don’t throw a global pandemic-shaped wrench into the mix halfway through. Needless to say, that makes the process even more complicated.

Wanting to know how the budget is coming along for the city, the Sandy Journal reached out to the city with a list of questions, which Finance Director Brian Kelley was kind enough to take time out of his schedule to answer. (Answers are edited for brevity.)

Q: How does a situation like this impact the budget planning process?

A: We had our revenue projections complete and were in the final stages of evaluating expenditures for the mayor’s proposed budget at the time this event became really serious to our country and state. This caused us to perform new research and analysis on economic impacts and trends across the world and in the US. which resulted in several more scenarios and iterations of our projected revenues.

Q: Has the city already seen an impact

to revenue from decreased sales tax collection?

A: There is a two-month lag from when it is collected to when cities receive it from the State Tax Commission. We have not received our first month of impacted sales tax.

We expect this by the end of May, for the sales tax collected in March.

Q: How much does the city project revenue from sales tax to decrease?

A: We have been keeping abreast with the latest news and expert reports to enable us to make some educated projections, including actual trends from China and Italy related to hotel occupancy rates. I am projecting that the most damage will occur in the current fiscal year – March through June and then transition slowly back to the norm over a period of six to 12 months (perhaps longer) after that.

Q: How is this situation similar and/ or different to the Great Recession, as far as how the city’s budget might be impacted?

A: This has been a much more abrupt and deeper impact initially – hitting the immediate four to six-month period in a sharper way.

However, we anticipate the rebound to be swifter as well once restrictions are lifted and solutions to the virus are found. During the Great Recession, the city experienced a loss of over $4 million in sales tax revenue over a three-year period. It is unclear at this point how soon our economy will recover – depending on how well businesses survive and are able to rehire em-

ployees once conditions open up. Fortunately, the type of businesses in Sandy are fairly well diversified, which has helped soften the impact.

Q: Is the city in a better financial position now than in 2008?

A: We are in a similarly well-positioned financial condition now as compared to 2008.

We have the same percentage of reserve balance in our General Fund and our bond credit rating is actually slightly higher at a AAA now, compared to a AA+ back then. There are only a handful of cities in the state that have this rating.

A rescue pup comes to the online learning rescue

he students in Hailey Beutler’s first-grade class at Edgemont Elementary School in Sandy received a special treat when they logged onto their Canvas online learning site on April 13. Beutler, known affectionately to her students as Miss B, shared her new puppy named Coconut in their morning meeting.

The students’ responses were immediate.

“There’s been a lot of, ‘He’s so cute!’ and ‘I love him!’” Beutler said.

Beutler adopted Coconut from the Humane Society of Utah where she volunteers on a weekly and as needed basis and said, “I have always loved animals, especially dogs.

I’ve been looking for a while but hadn’t found one that I thought would be a good match until Coconut came along.”

The school closures because of COVID-19 was also a factor in the adoption.

“Being able to stay home and train him while still working was a huge plus as far as timing went. My ultimate goal with the dog I adopted was to hopefully become a therapy dog team and visit classrooms, hospitals and nursing homes.”

Beutler, a Draper resident, was excited to share Coconut with her students even if it was in a different way than she would have if they were all in the classroom. She sees the importance of maintaining connections and relationships throughout social distancing and school closures.

“I’ve learned quickly in order to teach, you first need to build a relationship. A great way to do this is through sharing things that are happening in your life with your students because it makes them more comfortable and encourages them to share about their

lives too,” she said. Knowing more about her students and what is going on with them, especially during these times, helps to guide Beutler’s interactions with each student and allows her to better understand their needs.

Coconut has also helped Beutler with the stress she’s been feeling in the transition from classroom to online teaching. “It’s really hard not being able to see my kids,” she said. “It’s also been stressful putting together an online course and making sure they have everything they need to succeed.”

She said watching Coconut lightens the mood with all that is happening. “He’s been a huge stress relief for me because he loves to snuggle and is such a goofball,” she said.

Coconut even had his own Easter egg hunt, but he was more interested in “chasing and chewing the plastic eggs than the treats inside them,” Beutler said.

Coconut and his siblings were in a foster home until they were old enough to be adopted. Beutler says that the Humane Society of Utah tries to keep animals in their current situation if it’s a good fit by, “providing any help they can to the current owners that will help prevent them from having to surrender the pet.” For more information on adoptable animals, resources and ways to help visit utahhumane.org.

Beutler said that so far 9-week-old Coconut seems like he will be a good fit for therapy work. In the meantime, he certainly is helping her first-grade Eagles feel connected and bringing them joy. Such was seen with one student’s response to the prompt: What was the best thing about your spring break?

MARILYN MORGAN Sandy Beautification Committee member, and longtime Sandy resident.

Marilyn has lived in Sandy City for the last 46 years. Over the years, Marilyn has been heavily involved in the gardening community.

She started out as a member of Sandy Garden Club, where she served as the president for 8 years. She spent her time touring many nurseries, viewing many plant and tree selections, and keeping up with the newest techniques in the gardening community.

While she was still involved in the Sandy Garden Club, a Sandy citizen approached Marilyn and invited her to be on the Sandy Beautification Committee. This appealed to Marilyn because she was concerned about neighbors not taking pride in their yards, and she felt many didn’t understand the importance of curb appeal.

Gardening has always played a huge part in Marilyn’s life. Because of her involvement, she has educated many neighbors and others in the community about the importance of yard care and conserving water. Being a member of the Beautification Committee has taught her the importance of “slowing the flow,” as well as many different xeriscaping techniques. She has also taken tours at Jordan Valley’s Garden Park to learn to conserve water and reduce the growth of grass. Marilyn encourages everyone to get involved in the Sandy Garden Club and assist your community to help make it beautiful.

Police Services There are multiple divisions and units within the Police Department to provide specialized services to the community: • Patrol: Patrol handles calls for service that come in through dispatch, such as traffic accidents, thefts, or assaults.

• Crime Suppression: This is a proactive unit that targets crimes in progress, narcotics, and warrants. This unit will also handle quality of life issues.

• Park Police: This unit actively patrols the park areas in Sandy City. They ensure safety in the parks and educate the public.

• Motors: This unit handles traffic enforcement and provides safe roadways for the motoring public. They will also handle traffic accident reconstruction.

• K9: This unit will respond to calls where it is necessary to utilize a dog’s skills in either narcotics detection, bomb detection, tracking missing people, or the apprehension of criminals.

• Investigations: Detectives are responsible for following up on investigations for all active cases generated by Patrol. They can also initiate proactive investigations. The Investigations Unit is divided into four separate units. o Persons: This unit handles the investigations that directly relate to people such as assaults and homicides. o Property: This unit handles the investigations that directly relate to personal property such as frauds or stolen property. o Narcotics: This unit handles all investigations that are drug related. o Family Crimes: This unit consists of a detective, four victim advocates, and one therapist. This unit specializes with victims of crime such as domestic violence and assaults.

They offer resources and help victims through the legal process.

• School Resource Officers: The School Resource Officers (SRO) are assigned specifically to the schools within Sandy City. They handle the calls for service generated within the schools, teach safety, and provide a positive influence for the children.

• Forensics: This unit has two evidence scene technicians and is overseen by a Sergeant.

They have specialized training in documenting and processing crime scenes ranging from burglaries to homicides. They are responsible for maintaining the integrity of evidence and the chain of custody for all items submitted by officers and detectives.

• Records: Records provides services to the Police Department and the public. Records is responsible for gathering, processing, and maintaining all police-related reports. They are also responsible for the distribution, storage, and expungement of records.

• If you need a police officer, you can contact dispatch one of two ways: • For an emergency, you can call 911 directly. Calling 911 is used to stop a crime, report a fire, or save a life.

• For a non-emergency, you can call (801) 799-3000. This would be if you require an officer to respond, but you are not in imminent danger nor it is not a fire or medical emergency. This line is used to report crimes that are not an immediate life or safety threat.

Hey your kids are out of school! We’ve all been forced into an early summer (minus the glorious sunshine), so let’s go over some summer safety tips to keep your kids stay safe while they’re out and about. This is all assuming, of course, that at some point we will be allowed to leave the house!

• If children are home alone and answer the phone, they should never tell the caller they are home alone.

• If an unknown person knocks on the door when children are home alone, they should not answer the door but let them know someone is inside. Again, children should never let them know they are home alone.

• Keep doors and windows closed and locked. Close your garage door. Most bad guys look for crimes of opportunity so limit that potential.

Community Development Did You Know?

Sandy City’s Property Maintenance Code is intended to build on existing community strengths by providing appropriate guidelines and measures to help neighborhoods remain strong and vibrant. A large part of this is maintaining property landscaping. How you maintain your landscaping affects the appearance of the community as a whole.

Landscaping (including, but not limited to: grass, sod, ground cover, trees, or shrubs) must be kept in healthy, neat, and orderly appearance. It must also be kept watered, healthy, and free of weeds. Xeriscaping and other waterwise landscaping is encouraged and many great ideas can be found on our Public Utilities Department website at sandy.utah.gov/waterconservation.

Additionally, weeds and grass should not reach a height taller than six (6) inches at any time. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Code Enforcement Division at enforcement@sandy.utah.gov.

• Be sure that your children know how to call 911 and when it is appropriate to do so.

• Establish a schedule for children home alone to check in with parents.

• Establish house rules for computer and internet usage. Make sure your child understands the dangers of the internet, knows to not give out personal information, or talk to strangers online.

• Make sure your children wear helmets while riding bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc.

• There is safety in numbers. Children are safer in a group of friends when going places.

• Parents should know the routes their children take to any given location. Children need to understand the importance of not deviating from those routes.

• Make sure your children know to never talk to strangers.

RECYCLING WORKS

MATERIALS RECYCLED IN SANDY CITY BECOME RAW MATERIALS USED BY DOMESTIC MANUFACTURERS When you put an aluminum can, a plastic milk jug, or a flattened cardboard box in your recycling cart, it’s the first step of a process that conserves valuable natural resources. Your simple environmentally conscious act ultimately concludes with viable recyclables becoming raw materials used by domestic manufacturers to make new products such as beverage cans, fabrics, and paper towels.

Waste Management (WM) trucks pick up curbside recycling throughout the community and take the materials collected to the WM Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in West Jordan to be sorted, baled, and sold by the ton.

• Sandy City residents put about 830,000 pounds of materials into recycling carts every month.

• Just over 10% of the recyclables processed by WM in Utah are sold to and used

by Utah-based manufacturers.

• More than 50% of the steel recycled at WM’s MRF in Utah remains in the state to be reused.

• An aluminum beverage can put into recycling is typically back on the shelf as a new can within 60 days.

Each type of recycled material goes through a specific renewal process: • Paper is slurried and cleaned of contaminants before being used to produce new paper products.

• Cardboard is put through a similar process and reused to make paperboard for food boxes, paper towels, writing paper, and more.

• Plastics are separated by resin type, shredded, and melted into pellets. Water bottle pellets can turn into polyester thread and be woven into a new T-shirt. Plastic milk jug pellets may be used to produce detergent bottles or toys.

• Steel cans are melted down to make new cans, rebar, or even car parts.

• Aluminum beverage cans are shredded, washed, melted, and rolled into sheet metal used to make more cans.

When you recycle, it makes a big difference. So, remember to put your clean and dry plastic bottles, metal cans, paper, and cardboard in the recycling bin. Learn more about how to recycle correctly at wm.com/recycleright.

How yearbooks will look as schools rush to complete them

illcrest High co-editor Maya Everett said the yearbook’s due date to the printer was April 6, weeks after March 13 when the soft closure of schools was announced.

“Yearbook looks a lot different with all of us at home,” she said. “We’re struggling to include spring sports since many of those didn’t have home competitions. We also are incorporating COVID-19 in a positive way, showing how we’re staying connected to teachers and the school.”

Hillcrest, like most schools, has to complete pages by a series of deadlines throughout the year. There were still some clubs that had yet to take a group photo.

“Robotics had their regional qualifier, so we have lots of photos from that we can use. With theatre, we have a write-up from the main character in ‘Richard II,’ which was ready to take the stage when the school closed. With sports, it’s been harder. Soccer had photos from an away tournament. Track had one home meet, but our photographer was going to go to the meet the week after school got canceled. The theme of our school year and our yearbook is ‘moments,’ so we’re asking some seniors and team captains for their favorite moments and asking them to drive by and we’ll fill in the gaps with those,” said Everett, who shares the editor position with Emily Smiliach.

“We wrote about it, explaining what it was, and then tried to include some funny stories, how students are keeping from going stir-crazy and tried to keep it lighthearted,” she said.

However, both girls don’t know what is to happen to spring yearbook sales, distribution and even, students signing one another’s yearbook.

That was something Alta High yearbook adviser Denise Ferguson was planning to address, but in the meantime, was tracking the school’s yearbook as it traveled from California – where the printer closed since it was deemed a “non-essential business” to another printing facility in Tennessee.

“We’ll get it from Tennessee when all of this subsides,” she said. “We’ll have to figure out how to get it to our students.”

Alta’s book was in the final stages when the soft closure was announced and, like the other yearbooks, had a challenge with spring sports.

“When Murray (School District) closed on the 12th, I said, ‘Let’s just get photos today, just in case,’” she said. “We got tennis, but they weren’t in uniform. Boys soccer dressed in their uniforms for the practice for us. We have what we got from lacrosse and girls golf, and a parent gave us some baseball action photos. With baseball, we also got permission to use the Lifetouch portraits and

converted those to black-and-white to create a grid, like baseball cards. It looks fabulous, like we planned it.”

Memory books in middle school also had deadlines to meet after the soft closure.

At Elk Ridge Middle, adviser Steve Pollock said that this was a special edition since it was the 25th anniversary of the school opening and for the first time, the 75-page memory book will be hard cover.

“We missed so many things we would have liked to include like the last concerts of fine arts – orchestra, band, dance – and the student talent show, which we had a whole page devoted to,” he said about the last 40 pages they were turning in. “We had to scramble to figure out how to fill some of those.”

Elk Ridge, like the high schools, reached out to students to learn how they were spending time at home with their families during the soft closure to include in the memory book. The staff also included more candid shots of students.

Already included in the book is a spread of the anniversary of the school, including highlighting four teachers who are still teaching there, and photos, which included the first principal and assistant principal.

As the students were home, Pollock and a parent volunteer, who worked with staff on writing and layouts throughout the year, ensured that the last pages were completed.

“What was funny about photos missing with this yearbook was that we had ordered yearbook shirts and were waiting for them to come in,” Pollock said. “So, we didn’t even have our yearbook staff photo to include.” l

Jordan Valley School forced to cancel ‘The Lion King’ production

en classes of students at Jordan Valley had planned to take the stage in April to perform an adaption of “The Lion King,” written by school music therapist Sarah Mortensen. Jordan Valley students have severe multiple disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, seizure disorders, communication impairments, genetic disorders and syndromes, deaf–blindness and students who are extremely medically fragile.

The goal at Jordan Valley School is to improve the quality of life for students ages 5 to 22 and their families. “My biggest goal is to give these kids experiences like the general education kids have.

We have a school dance, a Christmas program, we participate in the (Canyons School) District sports day; and these kids know other schools have musicals. This gives them a chance to be like their peers,” Mortensen had said before schools were closed for the coronavirus pandemic. She said the show helps with some of their individual learning plans such as communication or motor skills. They had begun learning songs in mid-February and in early March, the six leads were rehearsing their lines. However, after initial soft closure of schools, the governor and state superintendent closed all in-person learning for the remainder of the school year so the musical

‘We hope we never have to use it’ – backup hospital stands ready in Sandy

n April 6, the Utah Division of Emergency Management announced that the Mountain America Expo Center at 9400 S. State St. was set up as a backup hospital site. The site has the capacity for 1,100 patients, including pediatric beds and an on-site pharmacy. The venue’s size, air handling system and backup generators made it ideal for the use.

Several weeks in, Public Information Officer Joe Dougherty said the site is ready if needed. “We hope we never have to use this site. If hospitals get overwhelmed with intensive care patients suffering from COVID-19, it’s important to have a plan for those who need less-than-acute care. The primary vision is to use it as an overflow should the need arise.”

Dougherty reiterated that it’s not meant to be used for COVID-19 patients, but could be converted for that use. “Utah does not currently need to send any patients to an alternate care site because Utah is working hard to flatten the curve.

As people continue to use social distancing measures, they decrease the likelihood of a runaway pandemic, which would land too many people in the hospital at once. Because Utahns are keeping apart, it’s working and hospitals are

New Canyons superintendent ready to face post-coronavirus education challenges

W

ith the unanimous vote, the Canyons Board of Education appointed Rick L. Robins to lead Canyons School District’s 34,000 students when current superintendent Jim Briscoe retires June 30.

Canyons Board President Nancy Tingey said the appointment comes at an “unprecedented time” as the world copes with the COVID-19 pandemic. That was evident in Robins’ approval as some board members cast their ballots from remote locations in light of the COVID-19 social distancing guidelines.

It not only was an unprecedented time in the school board naming its fourth-ever superintendent, but also as earlier that day, April 14, Gov. Gary Herbert announced that K-12 public schools would remain online for the rest of the school year.

Robins met challenging questions about the extended school closure after the announcement, by a scattering of media, who were in attendance and could sit in chairs spaced apart from one another.

“None of us, any of us, could predict this, or see it really coming, so, yes, it’s a real challenge, one for the ages,” Robins said about the pandemic. “It’s overwhelming for everybody right now, for sure. As I mentioned, we’re in it together.

It’s really unprecedented. We’ve never really experienced something like this. So, I think really the key is to take care of our kids and our family and make sure they’re OK.” As a self-proclaimed optimist, Robins is “holding out hope” that schools will be back in session next fall.

“Our families and especially our students are really looking forward to the day they’re back in the schools. Moving into next year, I think really the discussion points will be around the bridge and coming from this situation we’re in right now to the fall and trying to address those gaps,” he said, adding that there likely will be baseline assessments in the fall to do “what’s best for each individual student.”

Robins applauded school faculty and staff statewide in

helping families during this crisis whether it’s academics, nutrition, support or whatever is needed.

“I have full confidence in the teachers and staff of Canyons School District, just like the rest of our teachers and staff around the state. They’ve been amazing in this transition. I see this as a ‘we’ proposition. It’s not educators and parents separately. That’s one of the beauties of Utah; we work together well, and in times of crises, like this, we come together,” he said.

Robins earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern Utah University where he was inducted to the university’s hall of fame in 2013 after being a four-year starter at quarterback for the football team. He received his master’s degree from Grand Canyon University and a doctorate in educational leadership from University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

His 25 years in education began as a history teacher at Copper Hills High School in Jordan School District and he worked as an assistant principal and principal in the Alpine, Nebo and Juab school districts. He also has coached both boys’ and girls’ sports. As Juab High School principal, Robins was named Utah’s high school principal of the year in 2012 by his peers.

Under Robins’ leadership as superintendent, Juab School District was inducted into the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools in 2015 and the district was honored by the National School Boards Convention by the Center for Digital Education as a top 10 winner in 2018.

While the Board welcomed Robins, they also praised Briscoe’s leadership.

“This district just got a whole lot better” with Robins’ appointment, Briscoe said, adding that the two bonded as they were both appointed superintendents of schools the same year.

Joining Robins at the meeting was his wife, Heidi, who is a school psychologist. The couple have four children, ranging from age 8 to college—including one who is spending her senior year at their Nephi home.

Robins credited seniors for the tough year to end their public education years.

“I’m so proud of the seniors in every school district,” he said. “You see all the videos that student government officers are putting out for their classmates to support their classmates and you know, just a lot of love and support. These (spring sports and year-end) activities for the kids mean everything. It’s the heartbeat of our schools. To me, whether it’s football or the play, arts or the choir or whatever our kids’ passions are, they’ve all been put on hold and that’s a really tough place to be, especially our seniors this year. he healing power of music reached fans online during the Quarantine Concert Series while raising money for charity. Local and national musicians joined forces to raise funds for MusiCares in April.

“The concert was an absolute blast,” said Burke Laidler aka Ofi (pronounced oh-fee). “The energy was so different this time, obviously because there were a limited number of people allowed in the venue. But knowing fans were at home watching and expecting an ‘Ofi-level performance’ made us ignore the empty room and focus on why we were performing that type of concert in the first place.”

Laidler said that music heals, and people need “a dose of happiness right now more than ever. We really felt everybody in there with us.”

Performers usually draw off the power of the crowd, so the musicians had to find the strength within themselves. Laidler said he and his band knew they needed to sustain high energy for the entire performance as if they were in a room of 3,000 people.

“We played our hearts out and danced our butts off. Our 40-minute set felt like five minutes. We had an insane amount of fun at the Q-Concert Series broadcast,” he said.

Other factors that made the concerts shine were the caliber of musicians and the interviews sprinkled throughout the shows. Other performers included: Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon, James Otto, Troubadour 77, Ofi, Suit Up, Soldier, Tom Yankton of

Rascal Flatts, Charley Jenkins, Nathan Osmond, Travis Van Hoff, and Rally.

“We are very grateful to Gary Robison for having the insight to put on a show of this caliber for people bored at home that were looking to have some semblance of normalcy back in their life,” Laidler said. “We do have the best fans. My livelihood, as well as many other full-time performers, was greatly affected by COVID-19, so I was extremely humbled and in awe of how many people sent so much love and donated to MusiCares.”

The isolation and boredom of quarantine lead Gary Robison, the executive producer, to realize he needed a change.

Reading Facebook posts and watching the news made him depressed. “After watching endless Amazon movies, I need something else. Something that only music can provide,” he said.

Robison partnered with the MusiCares Charity, which is part of the Grammy’s mission to provide a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need. MusiCares’ services and resources cover a range of financial, medical and personal emergencies.

The two-day music celebration was broadcast from the Experience Event Center as well as from some musicians’ homes. Josh Hermann, Marketing Director Experience Event Center, noted that even though the concerts didn’t have an in-person audience, they still provided a live feel.

“Knowing it’s live presents that feeling that we’re all in it, we’re simul-

taneously enjoying in real-time together,” Hermann said. “It has its own spirit of enjoyment, even if we’re missing a component of true togetherness and that tickle to all of our senses at a live event.

While the community can sometimes feel like we are sharing in a community fear simultaneously in so many ways, it’s nice to interject some community passion for music and togetherness to overcome it! Just grateful to have been part of the event for that reason.”

Indian Hills teachers expand classroom learning to all parts of the world

W

hat had planned to be an extraordinary spring break for Indian Hills students Ava Weber and Grace Thompson and other students was postponed for a year because of COVID-19.

They had planned to learn about the world by traveling with other students to Costa Rica during the April week to learn about the local economy and culture and how the two correlate to each other. Through Education First Tours, the group planned to tour the country, from the volcano region to the coast where they will hike in the jungle, learn about the coffee and cacao industry, snorkel and go river rafting.

Grace had decided to go to Costa Rica to learn more about the culture, animals and food while Ava wanted to learn about the environment there as well as the culture. Both girls also were excited about getting to go zip lining and for months, have been contributing toward the trip by babysitting.

The group leader is Indian Hills science teacher Rachel Afualo, who, along with her colleague, Michelle Lacross, leads educational travel programs outside of school time.

“We want them to feel, see, and have hands-on learning opportunities to understand more about the world, its people and culture,” Afualo said. “We love making the world our campus.”

Trips are still scheduled this summer although they could be adjusted by EF, including a June trip which Lacross has been planning to take eight students to Normandy, Paris and London.

One student, Kenzie, who wished to withhold her surname, is in an advanced French class, has always wanted to travel to Europe to see “the amazing science and history behind the beautiful landmarks.” She already has researched places she’ll visit in preparation for the trip.

“We want students to understand how small the world is and to understand not only the differences, but our similarities,” Lacross said.

Afualo led students last June to the Dominican Republic, where the trip had a service component – to work with FUNDEMAR, the Dominican Republic foundation of marine studies, a non-governmental organization dedicated to research and conservation of marine life. There, the students helped with coral reef restoration.

“We learned in a class about what is killing the coral, and, in a lab, what is being done to help save coral life,” she said. “We had hands-on opportunities to learn about coral

life, something we don’t get to experience in the classroom.”

One method to help save marine life is to create concrete coral cookies or balls in the lab and transfer those to the ocean, where over time, fish, turtles, dolphins and other life accept it as part of the coral life, she said.

Afualo and students not only had the opportunity to make those cookies, but to also get in the water to count the specimens in the ocean. They also collected trash on the beach to provide input on what is needed to reduce that pollution — and what they could immediately do.

“I learned that not all sunscreen is coral reef-friendly,” she said, adding that any sunscreen needs to be applied more than 30 minutes before swimming in the ocean otherwise it washes right into marine life habitat.

Her daughter, Lily, a Draper Park eighth-grader, wanted to go on the trip to learn more about marine biology, specifically coral life, and how to take care of it.

The trip made an impact on her possible future career.

“I think (it would) be really cool to learn more and someday be able to do what I did in the Dominican Republic for a living,” Lily said, adding that she’s learned how to be “ocean safe for the next time I decide to go to the beach.”

dents from Davis, California also went snorkeling, cave swimming and zip lining.

Although there are local guides who assist the groups, Afualo said that both the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica trips allow students to practice Spanish, which helps their language skills.

Both Afualo and Lacross will head upcoming opportunities, which are open not only to Indian Hills students, but to others.

Afualo is registering students who are interested on a seven-day trip to Belize in 2021.

The trip itinerary includes seeing Mayan ruins dating back to 1,500 B.C., a guided jungle hike, zip lining through the rainforest, cave tubing, snorkeling in the Caribbean and other sightseeing. l

The Show Must Go On . . . . . !

There is a phrase in show business that says regardless of what happens, whatever show has been planned still has to be staged for the waiting patrons. The COVID-19 pandemic, earthquakes, job losses and economic downturns have stopped many shows from going on these days. But in this Sandy neighborhood, the birthday show celebration went on for Earl M. Jacklin who turned 100 on April 12, 2020.

Months ago, family had prepared a big open house celebration to honor their father, grandfather, great grandfather, great neighbor and great friend only to be disappointed with the stay at home, social distancing directive to keep people safe. So what do you do to “keep the show on” and “keep people safe”, you go to plan B (organized by some caring neighbors) - a drive-by wave and honk celebration for a very special person – Earl M. Jacklin. On Saturday, April 11, 2020, almost 100 cars drove by the Jacklin home to “wave and honk” in recognition of a wonderful friend and neighbor. One hundred cars for 100 years of a wonderful life. Local television media were on hand to greet Utah’s newest centenarian.

Last November, Earl was one of eleven veterans honored during the 22nd annual Veterans Day Commemoration at the University of Utah. During World War II, Master Sergeant Jacklin served as a radar technician in North Africa, Italy and Germany protecting Allied airfields and infantry units. Jacklin received the Bronze Star for his service on the Anzio Beachhead.

After the war, Jacklin earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering and worked in the aerospace industry before retiring.

alling all future scientists and kids who love to experiment! There’s a new place to play in Sandy. Little Beakers, located at 9441 S. 700 E., is a lab for kids designed by a NASA chemist. The first Utah location opens this spring and welcomes kids for open lab days, field trips and birthday parties.

Owner Vickie Hulderson’s vision of a lab for kids started when she and her husband went above and beyond at their child’s science-themed birthday party.

“We invited 34 kids and set up a lab in our house. We had stations with chemical reactions, magnets, fire and liquid nitrogen. We made a huge mess, but the kids had a blast!

And honestly, I think we had more fun than they did. ” Hulderson said.

Soon parents asked Hulderson, who has an education degree, to start a summer camp.

With that on her mind, she visited her sister in Texas. “She said there was a Little Beakers lab for kids opening up, and did we want to go give it a try? Of course we did! And when I walked in, the angels sang. I knew I wanted to bring this to Sandy,” Hulderson said.

The Little Beakers lab gives kids access to real scientific equipment like microscopes.

Experiments are spelled out like recipes in a binder and use proper scientific terms.

“One of our programs is a curriculum for ages three and up that’s geared toward homeschooling families. We host field trips for preschools and elementary schools, and kids who come are led through an hour of hands on experiments. We do the talking, and they get to do the science,” Hulderson said.

Birthday parties, Parent Date Nights, and team building events for adults (“Think the Great British Baking Show’s technical challenge!”) are all available. Summer camps cover physics, chemistry and biology. There

“My favorite bit of feedback came the other day when I went to pick up my kids from school. A little boy I didn’t know walked up to me and said, ‘Hey lady, when are you going to open up that lab already?!’”

Hulderson said.

“I’m excited to bring Little Beakers to Sandy. It’s all about exploring the environment, asking the questions and lighting that spark.”

Give me the green light: Sandy works on syncing traffic lights

f you’ve noticed that you’re spending a little less time at red lights this spring, you can thank Sandy City.

This fall the city contracted with Avenue Consultants, as well as the state and county, to conduct a study of the city’s traffic lights and subsequently resynched them in an attempt to get Sandy residents and visitors moving a little more smoothly through the city.

The study focused on nine “signal corridors,” streets that handle the most traffic throughout the city, such as State Street, 10600 South, 9000 South, 700 East and 1300 East. The goal of the project is to make sure that all the signals along those streets are in sync with one another.

Britney Ward, the city’s transportation engineer, explained the strategy behind signal corridors during a report to the city council on April 14.

“Typically in a signal corridor we would set all the cycle lengths to be the same, and then we would offset the times by a few seconds or depending on how close together those signals are spaced so they are coordinated,” Ward said.

If done correctly, the strategy results in more coordinated and continuous flows of traffic throughout the city.

Councilwoman Marci Houseman summarized it like this. “Though there may be a

longer delay when encountering a red light, it seems that overall we are going to have residents encountering green more often. That was the goal, to have a continuous flow,” she said.

The Social Media Scandal - What I Learned During Quarantine Hopefully by the time this reaches your mail we are beginning to dip our big toe back into life again. Like many others, being thrust into solitary confinement, left me with some spare time to spend on social media, and thanks to my friends I learned so much about how to handle this disaster. With the vast array of opinions, I found putting it all together difficult though, but I gave it shot anyway. It’s all as clear as mud now, here’s what I learned.

Working from Home: If you are able to work from home you are lucky, unless you are required to work from home, then it’s horrible and you wished you could go to work, because working from home is too much work.

Keeping a Healthy Diet: In effort not to get sick we should eat well, but we should not go out to get healthy fresh food when we run out and eat whatever pre-packaged food we have on hand instead. However, we should order out at our local restaurants to help keep them in business. Then it’s okay to go out to pick up the food. Your food might be prepared by someone sick that doesn’t know they are sick, but it’s okay if you pay by credit card and take the food out of the container. However, you should avoid going to the grocery store at all costs because you might get sick.

Getting Sick: Wearing a mask is not helpful, but if you get sick you should wear a mask. But, don’t go to the hospital if you’re sick, because you might get sick if you do.

The Press: Every article starts with a panic headline designed to shock us. But when we read the article, we find it’s not so shocking after all and perhaps even a little boring, except when our friends post these articles to social media. Then we never read the article, we just start divisive arguments based on the shocking headline instead.

Politics: We are all be untied as American’s; we are proud, and this is the time we shine. But, if there’s a government action that we don’t approve of, then we are not united if we disagree with our friend. We might even be called names, because name calling on social media is okay. Huh???

Love: We love our partners so much we could not live without them, they are our everything, unless we have to live with them non-stop. Then we feel we’d rather live without them.

Home Schooling: Teachers are the saints and I can no longer remember why I even had kids.

Grandparents: You can’t see your grandkids, but if you’re a grandparent and work in a grocery store or pharmacy, then you can see someone else’s grandkids. You can avoid getting the virus and still see your grandkids virtually by using a computer program called Zoom but, watch out, your computer might get a virus instead.

Earthquakes: In the event of an earthquake get outside, but otherwise don’t go outside it’s not safe. Also, keep in mind that on the annual practice day called ShakeOut, there might really be an earthquake, then it’s no longer a practice day and you can go outside.

As soon as COVID-19 hovered in the air we breathe, I went into full-on “Gone With the Wind” Scarlett O’Hara mode, ripping up bed sheets to make toilet paper and stockpiling moonshine for antiseptic. Of course, Scarlett was useless in an emergency. For the majority of the Civil War, she whined and married rich men.

I’m also pretty useless in emergencies.

When I knew the shelter-in-place edict was coming, I didn’t stockpile food, I scurried to the library to check out all the books.

After hoarding four months of library books, I told everyone in the house (my husband, my daughter and her two children, ages 3 and 8) to check their 72-hour kits.

They responded, “What 72-hour kits?”

Not a good start.

In the shed, I located an emergency essentials bag that looked like it had housed a family of weasels. Along with 10 years of dust, it contained an expired can of roasted almonds, a box of matches, a pair of underwear and a spatula.

We were doomed.

Tossing my hair like Scarlett, I tied on my shopping bonnet and sang out “fiddledee-dee” as I headed to the grocery store for provisions. By the time I got there, options were limited, unless I was keen on making a casserole with canned asparagus, creamed squid and buckwheat flour. I figured we’d just be creative with dinner. (Lesson learned: 3-year-old granddaughters don’t like creative dinners.)

This has been the worst staycation ever. I do not recommend.

As warmer weather approaches, I miss shopping for new spring clothes. Looking back on how Scarlett made dresses out of her velvet draperies, I tried channeling her creative spirit again. It was tough to made clothes out of our window coverings since we only have wooden blinds. But I did my best.

We’re still in lock-down mode. I replenish our milk and produce once a week. We walk the dog a dozen times a day. We work and eat and read and play games and get on each other’s nerves and fight and make up and write hopeful messages on the sidewalk in colorful chalk.

Like Scarlett, there are lots of things I’ll worry about tomorrow. But if we have books to read, food to eat and our family is safe, I’m very content in my little corner of the world.l
