ARE ELECTRIC BUSES A VIABLE SOLUTION FOR LITTLE COTTONWOOD TRAFFIC PROBLEMS?

A

group of local elected officials, community activists and college students boarded a bus last month for a ride up Little Cottonwood Canyon. Their goal? To show that electric buses can be a viable solution for the canyon’s traffic problems.

The Utah Department of Transportation is currently in the middle of the process of narrowing down its list of proposals. From an original list of five possibilities, the department narrowed its consideration down to two: an enhanced bus system (along with widening the roads in the canyon) and the construction of a gondola.

Throughout its Environmental Impact Statement report, UDOT’s analysis of the enhanced bus system presupposes that those buses would run on diesel fuel.

An assumption that Cottonwood Heights City councilwoman Ellen Birrell says is based on a myth that electric buses don’t have what it takes to make it up the steep slopes of the canyon.

“We’re going to urge UDOT to revisit their assessment,” Birrell told the City Journals.

High school students learn engineering offers variety, creativity, advancements

H

illcrest High junior Amber Parker wanted to get a glimpse into potential future careers in engineering, specifically aerospace engineering, so she was excited to attend high school engineering career day.

“I learned how engineers got into their positions and specifically what local companies are doing in the engineering field,” she said. “It’s pretty interesting.”

Parker attended sessions presented by Boeing, VPI Engineering and the University of Utah. Other presenters came from Ottobock, Rocky Mountain Power, Horrocks Engineering, Hunt, Reaveley Engineering, Comfort Systems USA and Salt Lake Community College, which hosted the half-day conference for mostly high school juniors and seniors from the Salt Lake and Tooele valleys.

Canyons School District Career and Technical Education District Coordinator Patti Larkin said that the focus of the fair was to provide about 250 students with possible career opportunities within the engineering field.

“They’re getting to meet all different types of engineers, make those connections, and understand their specific pathways,” she said. “We hope students can see what is needed, so they have the opportunity to get an internship or a job shadow and set their path of study toward their career.”

Taylorsville sophomore Danna De Leon said she learned a range of engineering.

In Ottobock, she learned about the different prosthetics made with 3D printers ranging from snowboarders’ knees to swimmers’ ankles.

“They test different varieties, adding weights, forces or whatever is needed to make improvements,” she said. “In the Boeing session, I learned some of the ways they designed commercial airplanes.”

Granger High and Granite Technical Institute senior Hayden Young, who wants to become a biomedical engineer, also attended the Ottobock session.

“I’ve learned composites are a very big part of it,” he said. “With engineering, designs may start on paper then move to CAD (computer-aided drafting). Designs can be improved for better comfort, better manufacturing time, better about anything, to help solve or improve what is needed.”

Murray High Work-Based Learning Coordinator Brady Smith said the 15 students who came from his school appreciated being able to interact with industry professionals.

“Our goal is to connect the students we work with to the career paths they can continue down once their time is completed here at Murray High School and this is a great opportunity for that to happen,” he said, adding that some students appreciated learning about the Luke Skywalker Arm that is being worked on at the U of U to the engineering careers at Rocky Mountain Power.

Brighton High senior Amelia Ackler said that she appreciated the robotics session she attended.

“They could make it walk, dance, and do all sorts of cool things through coding,” she said.

She was with freshman Audrey Fleckenstein who said that through Reaveley Engineering, she learned how engineers perform a series of tests on structures.

“They were designing buildings and tested them and reviewed to ensure their designs would withstand earthquakes,” she said. “It isn’t just a one-time test, but over and over again.”

“I hadn’t heard of it before; it was actually really interesting,” she said.

Olympus senior Ben Walston said he’s considering a career in mechanical engineer and through the conference, he learned more about what was available through his sessions with VPI and Ottobock.

“It’s amazing and just fun to see how they can make something that is needed through their eyes and creativity,” he said.

to use an electric bus that her office borrowed from California for a few days to demonstrate its versatility and viability to local legislators and elected officials.

So how did the bus fare with the challenge of climbing Little Cottonwood Canyon?

“We zipped up!” Birrell said. “And it was so quiet we could use our inside voices. It was delightful.”

“I would describe it as clean, fast, quiet and comfortable,” said Sandy Mayor Monica Zoltanski.

“I was skeptical, to tell you the truth, whether it could handle the climb up Little Cottonwood Canyon, but this bus had no problem.”

Not only was the bus able to keep up with other traffic as it made its way up the mountain, but it was able to recharge its battery on the way down through a process called regenerative braking. Because of this, the bus was able to make it up and down the canyon using only 3% of its battery.

Alta Mayor Roger Bourke, who hopped on board the bus for the final few minutes of the ride, was impressed with the experience and touted the vehicle’s benefits for the environment.

these greenhouse gasses,” he said. “And this is the way to get a handle on it. This can be charged with renewable energy, which we’re getting more and more of.

That’s the future.”

Birrell noted that the solution to traffic problems in the canyon doesn’t necessarily have to be contained to one big project that costs hundreds of mil-

lion dollars, like the gondola or road expansion. Instead, she suggested that a better strategy would be to adopt multiple smaller changes. One change she said has already started working is the ski resort’s implementation of reserved parking spots.

Utah man believes he set world record for youngest to snowboard Himalayan peak

A

t 23 years old, Fin Keleher may be the youngest person to snowboard from a mountain peak higher than 8,000 meters.

Keleher, who grew up in Sandy and attended Hillcrest High School and Westminster College, made the trip to Nepal in September 2021 after a year of planning with a friend.

“On the 29th of September, [my friend] and I had the opportunity to summit Manaslu (8,163 m/26,781 ft.) and descend via skis and snowboard. A beautiful trip, and one of my proudest achievements. Thank you to all who supported me at home and while I was in Nepal!” Keleher posted on Instagram in October.

Keleher has been building up to a trip like this his whole life. When he’s not at work with U of U Health, he’s either on an outdoor adventure or planning one. He spends a lot of time in the Wasatch back.

When Utah gets too warm to snowboard, he heads to the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.

Still, with all of his experience, Keleher’s trip was no casual undertaking.

Manaslu is the eighth-highest mountain in the world. Part of the Nepalese Himalayan range, its neighbors include Mount Everest and K2.

“I went with a friend and she had been planning the trip for about three years. There is a lot of preparation, and you need to apply

for permits from the Nepalese government.

Her original partner wasn’t able to go, so in August 2020 she invited me,” Keleher said.

Keleher was fortunate that his plan in Nepal was mountaineering. “Tourism there is about 95% trekking. To limit tourism during the pandemic they stopped giving out trekking permits, but they allowed the 200 or so mountaineering permits. And we’re lucky it was 2021—if it had been 2020, we

The Sherpa carried some of their food and their oxygen bottles and went ahead of them to set up camp.

“We were trying to go pretty minimal on support, but I don’t think I would have been able to do it fully self-supported,” Keleher said.

Keleher takes stunning photos and video of his adventures and posts them on Instagram. “Photography was my hobby before mountaineering. I got interested in it when I was 15, and it’s evolved into what I do today,” Keleher said.

wouldn’t have been able to go.”

Training in Utah’s higher altitude gave Keleher a bit of an advantage as far as acclimation went, though it didn’t last all the way to the top.

“Getting to 17,000 feet (5,200 meters) was no problem for me. But at 20,000 feet, I was having a hard time [breathing]. I had to acclimate there for about three weeks. At 24,500 feet (7,400 meters) I started using oxygen,” Keleher said.

For support, Keleher and his friend split the hire of a Sherpa. “That was the first time I’ve ever hired a support person. It helps their economy and there’s someone there if

question he’d get incredible shots. While snowboarding Manaslu, he used a GoPro MAX, a 360-degree camera set up (“It looked like a unicorn horn!”) that lets the viewer feel like they are descending the peak with Keleher. His edited video is on his Instagram @fin_keleher.

Keleher had a satellite phone and base camp had Wi-Fi, so he was able to call his anxious family back in Sandy to tell them about his success. The strange time difference of 11 hours 45 minutes made it hard to find a good time to call, but his mom Mary Jane Keleher was just grateful to hear he’d made it safely.

“They’re always asking where I’m going. I don’t think they’ve stopped worrying about me. They used to worry a lot more, so

I quit telling them what I was doing,” Keleher said with a laugh.

With his successful ski trips and interesting photos, Keleher is a bit of an overachiever. He graduated from Westminster College in 2019 with a bachelor’s in neuroscience and looks forward to grad school. In high school he said he was always “the quiet one in the back with my head in a book.”

pany g3gear, which gave him some funding and let him share his trip photos on their Instagram page. More sponsorships would be welcome, as that would help him do more of what he loves and share it with a bigger audience.

Though Keleher doesn’t necessarily see himself as an inspiration, he hopes that people who hear about his trip will feel excited to pursue their own ambitions and dreams.

“I’m already looking forward to the next trip, and I’d like to do Mont Blanc and some peaks in Europe.”

If Keleher finds out that he has set a world record, it would be his second. On his 11th birthday, he set a Guinness World Record for “Most Snails on Face,” with 43.

“I just read the record in a book when I was younger and thought, ‘I could totally beat that.’” l

Sandy couple celebrates 75 sweet years of Valentines

hink what you want to about Valentine’s Day—the sappy cards and obligatory chocolates. But whether you love it or hate it, the story of Tony and Vina Borrero is a sweet one.

They met in 1944 at the height of World War II. Tony was stationed at Fort Douglas and serving in the U.S. Air Force. They married in 1946, and have been together ever since. At ages 102 and 98, Tony and Vina celebrated their 75th Valentine’s Day together in February.

Their lives have been filled with hard work, children and grandchildren, travels around the world, ballroom dancing and nights out at their favorite restaurants. The Borreros moved to Cedarwood at Sandy Senior Living a few years ago. As the years pass, their love and willingness to care for one another grows stronger.

“I’m glad to help her because I love her so much. She’s just such a wonderful person. She made me the person I am today, and she’s the best wife I could ever have,” Tony said. He cares for Vina, who has gone blind, by taking her for walks, going to activities with her and helping her with daily tasks.

Vina appreciates having Tony at her side each day. “He is everything you could want in a lifelong partner. He has such a kind

heart, and each day I grow more thankful to have him by my side,” Vina said.

Tony has some advice to share: “The key to a long and happy marriage is to respect and love each other, and to never speak harshly to one another. You can’t lose with a formula like that.” l

Donations, volunteers and grants help Sandy church provide free camp for kids in foster care

hildren in foster care can miss out on fun life experiences. For the past 20 years, volunteers with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Sandy have worked to make sure that summer camp isn’t one of them.

“GSLC is a host church for the nonprofit Utah Royal Kids. We get donations and volunteers from around the valley to provide a week-long summer camp free of charge for kids who most need the experience, often because of abuse and neglect,” said Utah Royal Kids board member Heather Colling.

The camp hosts 40 to 50 kids, ages 7 to 11. A Saturday morning mentor club runs throughout the year and is open to a bigger age range. Both are run with donations, grants and lots of volunteer hours.

Colling credits social worker Shelley Horel and her husband John with starting the 501(c)(3) nonprofit that grew into Utah Royal Kids. Horel insists it was a group effort.

“I became a foster parent at age 25, which I know is pretty strange. My husband and I were raising foster kids and became adoptive parents. So we’ve known about these kids who really struggle. Being foster parents is one of those things we’ve found that we could do to help,” Horel said.

She said the idea came from a friend of hers who fielded a call at work as an adoption specialist for the State of Utah.

A woman at another church in Sandy had the idea to do a summer camp for kids in foster care. They worked together and brought the program to Utah.

“Our first year of camp, we had 19 kids attend. There are some things you learn pretty fast. Now we’ve figured out our training and our program, and it’s very good,” Horel said.

The location of the camp is confidential, but Colling describes it as “a beautiful camp with lodges and showers—the Ritz-Carlton of camping.”

“Everything is done as a labor of love.

We have no paid staff except for a grant writer. Volunteers undergo extensive training and background checks, and there are two adults to a child at all times,” Colling said.

GSLC is the host for the camps, but they welcome volunteers from all different churches and spiritual backgrounds.

“We are up front about the religious element of the camp. We want the kids to know God loves them, and has given them gifts and talents. We feel it adds an element of hope and self-worth,” Colling said.

Campers feel welcome from the moment they arrive. “As they pull up, the

Sandy Police recognized for ‘Walk and Talk’ initiative

H

ave you seen more Sandy Police officers out of their cars, walking around your neighborhood in the past year? If so, that’s not by accident. A new initiative from the city’s police department called “Officer Walk and Talk” was implemented last year, and is already garnering attention.

In January, the department was recognized with an honorable mention by LAW Publications in its inaugural Community Engagement Awards. In a press release announcing the awards, the organization pointed to the new program.

“Utah’s Sandy Police Department utilizes numerous events and initiatives to engage and activate their community. Programs like their ‘Officer Walk and Talk’ and participation in local community events allows them to positively connect with the general public.”

So what is the program exactly?

“The main purpose is community engagement. The idea behind it is to park your car, leave that mobile office and then walk the streets of Sandy. Hitting neighborhoods, hitting business areas and just engaging with people,” explained Sgt. Greg Moffitt.

Over the course of 2021, the department recorded 2,766 Walk and Talks, with over 500 of them coming in just one of the summer months.

“It’s a perfect opportunity because more people are out doing yard work or walking their dogs. It gives the officers a chance to interact with the citizens of Sandy in a very non-threatening manner. It’s a very casual and comfortable setting,” Moffitt said.

Even if it’s just 15-20 minutes per day, Moffitt said the program has benefits not only for public safety but also for

the physical and mental well-being of the city’s officers. But the biggest benefit comes in the form of police-community relationships.

“When you see an officer in their car driving around versus actually getting a moment to talk to them, you start to see the human factor. A lot of people just see the uniform and the car. They don’t see the actual person. And this gives people an opportunity to do that,” Moffitt said.

Many residents have taken advantage of these chance meetings to ask questions that they previously had kept to themselves, either because they weren’t sure how to get in contact with the department or didn’t want to waste someone’s time. But from a policing perspective, it’s much more time-effective to have those conversations before a crime happens.

“It’s better for us to spend 15 minutes talking to someone about things they can do for crime prevention, then to spend one to two hours with them filing reports when there’s been a burglary,” Moffitt said.

Other interactions have been as simple as an officer who was able to take a selfie with some folks who were doing a photo-scavenger hunt.

Creating opportunities for the community to have positive interactions with its officers is even more important for the department during an era when policing has been under the national spotlight.

“Having these officers get out can help break that perception within themselves. The last couple of years have been difficult. Here in Utah, and specifically in Sandy, we have really good interactions with and support from our

community,” Moffitt said.

With the program continuing in its second year, Moffitt wants Sandy residents to know that they want people to come up and talk to them.

“Don’t be alarmed if you see some officers out on a foot patrol in your neighborhood,” he said. “And feel free to go up and talk to them. Ask them questions. Let them know about your concerns.” l

Union Middle School students received standing ovations to their production of “Spamalot” this past January. It was their first show since the previous two were canceled. The show was under the direction of music teacher David Christensen, dance teacher Roxanne Paulsen and theater teacher Brooke Grant.

In 2020, students rehearsed for months in anticipation of performing “Once on This Island” before their school was shut down for the remainder of the school year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2021 performance was skipped. A yet-to-be-named show is planned for December 2022, the 10th and last show to put on at the current middle school, as construction is underway for a new Union Middle. “We plan to make it a big deal to celebrate that milestone and as a last hurrah on this stage,” Christensen said.

New dance teacher encourages Jordan Valley, Altara students to learn through movement

W

hen Beverley Taylor Sorenson Dance Specialist Eric Shiring was hired last fall to teach at both Altara Elementary and Jordan Valley School, he was excited when he walked into the classroom. For the most part, Jordan Valley students were not.

“Some of them I couldn’t get eye contact, some weren’t moving, some may not have understood,” he said.

Rather than get discouraged, Shiring readied himself for the challenge for the students who have severe multiple disabilities.

“I try to help them figure it out—do they see the visual?

Are they making eye contact, because that in itself is a big feat for some kids on some days. Some days they feel differently, so it’s a challenge every day,” he said. “I don’t get frustrated; I just want to make sure that I’m doing a good job and make sure I’m doing justice to these kids. What I’m doing may be effective for one student this day, but it’s subjective by every single student.”

Shiring’s teaching at Jordan Valley differs than at Altara Elementary, as he is tailoring it for 22 different classes of differing abilities, and allows students to explore creative movement or what he calls, “a dance mixture with art therapy.”

“It’s an opportunity to get them to move and stretch their bodies in ways that they don’t get to. So many of them are really bound and tight, that it turns into a creative artistic way of playing. We have music and sometimes, we get movement and sometimes, I don’t. I never really know what’s going to happen every day; I’m always on my toes,” he said. “It has gone from coming to Jordan Valley and them not wanting anything to do with me to having some kids who are visually impaired and non-vocal to understanding instructions, such as making circular shapes or clap on the beat. It’s been so cool to see some kids moving and smiling and enjoying the process through dance in my class.”

Shiring has a loose structure built around a subject, following the state core curriculum, but also allowing play time.

“There’s so much to be learned through play and just to experience. I can come in with an idea to do one thing and some kids are just not up for it, so I have to be able to switch and come up with movements and ideas on the spot,” he said saying that his 16 years of teaching dance and choreography experience has helped him adjust. “I just follow their energy and try to help them to be fully engaged.”

In a recent lesson, Shiring asked students who are in chairs to move their arms and hands in making shapes. He demonstrated a triangle, saying the shape, and asked students to repeat the word and mirror the movements. Shiring said that through trying to move, students can release their tension.

“Making it a full embodied experience is super important,” he said. “There’s not a lot of research with this demographic on dance. There are a few things with cerebral palsy or kids with injury, but not so many with kids who have multiple medical disabilities or issues that I need to address differently. I’ve had to really figure out things on my own. I find ways to make this work because I am always eager for more stuff to help make learning fun for these guys. It’s really cool to see little victories like if I get a student smiling and laughing or just doing it. It just lights me up. It is the best feeling.”

Similarly, Shiring feels validation when Altara students tell him they love his class.

“I’m seeing progress with what I’ve been trying to teach.

There’s just so much to learn through movement. It’s important to know how to use it and appreciate the fact that you can move in any way, in any form you can,” he said.

Shiring’s lessons often cover more than just dance curriculum.

Without talking, Altara Elementary students one afternoon were passing around balloons, keeping them afloat, using different body parts. They were creating movement, learning about space and working as a team while exercising—and they were having fun.

“They’re learning through something so simple, that they can laugh, have fun, move and challenge themselves and are working together,” said Shiring, who replicated the lesson he learned while earning his master’s degree.

Dance is new at both schools, where Shiring alternates teaching weekly. He began teaching students in August after being hired by Altara Principal Nicole Svee Magann.

“Eric has incredible, infectious energy and brings joy and enthusiasm to his class,” she said. “His students are able to capture and incorporate emotions and school academics while exploring and moving. It’s embracing full learning.”

At Altara, Shiring learns what curriculum students are studying, then incorporates those school lessons into his dance sessions.

“I did a lesson on shapes last week and was able to ask, ‘Where else is this applicable?’ They were able to answer through geometry and math and then, they even tried to create more shapes or things they see, like stop signs, with their bodies,” he said. “We’re moving and creating shapes and dances and the support they have for each other has been so cool to see.”

He also tries to incorporate social skills into his classes.

“I’m able to relate to some kids who may be troubled in the classrooms because I was that kid as well,” he said, in reference to be bullied when he was a child. “But these kids, they just thrive in dance. They’re eager to move. Movement is a kinesthetic way of learning, but it’s also visual so we’re hitting dif-

ferent ways for kids to learn about things and it’s a fun way to access knowledge and information.”

Shiring took up dance after being told at school dances he had rhythm and it was something he enjoyed. He would dance in his room with his Walkman on and eventually found his way to a studio and paid for his own hip-hop classes.

“My home life was not supportive, so dance became kind of my escapism,” he said.

That support Shiring received from his high school dance teacher helped him to develop talent that landed him a dance scholarship to Southern Utah University where he earned his bachelor’s in dance performance.

“It’s the people who really cultivated me and honored the fact that I loved doing it—that’s where my journey has been so cool. I worked really hard at it and I’ve gotten to travel the world through dance,” he said.

Shiring has danced in multiple dance companies, performing from Los Angeles to New York to London. While in London, while recovering from injury, he studied at the University of Roehampton to earn his master’s degree in choreography.

“I was getting my mobility back when I was accepted into the program. It was just amazing to be dancing constantly because I was told I would never be able to do it again. It ended up being more fun and in a sense, my therapy because it was more sacred,” he said.

Now, he wants to be that teacher who impacts students.

“I hope I’m teaching an appreciation of self. I want to be the teacher for them like the one who altered my path. It’s important that I teach them to follow their journey, whatever is in their heart,” he said. “It’s cool to know that what I’m doing is important: teaching them about life.”l

Hands-on means minds-on for learning science at Alta View

S

cience isn’t textbook.

At Alta View Elementary, students roll up their sleeves to fully embrace what they were learning.

On a particular day in January, older students were being rewarded for their hard work in presenting their science fair projects where they questioned and examined subject matters that stimulate their interest.

Questioning and seeking answers extends to all grades.

Fourth-graders students were learning firsthand with a visit from the Living Planet Aquarium.

In third grade, Thanksgiving Point education staff members taught students that learning science isn’t just under a microscope; it is science all around them as they first learned about the life cycle of a beetle, then were given an item and asked to determine what it was through dissection.

“They’re learning science is fun and they can be scientists every day,” Thanksgiving Point Education Explorer Chelle Marble said.

The Thanksgiving Point team typically takes supplies to about one-third of the state’s elementary schools’ third-graders annually to introduce them to similar investigations.

Alta View third-grade teacher Jacinda Meranda appreciates these hands-on lessons.

“They’re learning about scientific methods and learning how to work independently and with partners,” she said. “It’s piquing their interest; they’re curious and are investigating for answers.”

Meranda said that third-grade students are learning through experiments every other week from learning animal adaptations to motion and force. They also will learn about circuits, magnets, electricity, weather and the environment.

Science education is extending students’ literacy through vocabulary, reading and writing.

“They’re having so much fun that they don’t realize they’re learning,” she said. “It’s inquiry-based, not just reading a textbook and memorizing facts.”

Third-grader Oscar Torina was writing notes and making sketches in a journal during the Thanksgiving Point presentation.

Then, with a plastic knife, he cut into the object that was given to him to look closer at it.

“I think it’s some kind of flower or plant.

It has roots, a tunic, scales, a basal stem and in the center, a flower bud,” he said. “I think it’s a tulip.”

Beehive Science & Technology Academy to move, renovate Shopko store for expansion

B

eehive Science & Technology Academy sophomore Rishi Patel is planning to take programming next semester and next year in the school’s new building, he’d like to learn JavaScript to help him toward his dream job of becoming a video game designer.

“This is a much larger building with a really good location so we can include kindergarten and elementary kids at our school,” he said looking at the former Sandy Shopko store which will become Beehive’s new campus. “Our teachers are great and really take the time to help me and I’ve met so many of my friends here.”

Beehive acquired the 116,000-squarefoot former retail store site with plans to expand the school to include the elementary students. For the past 17 years, the STEM charter school has served middle and high school students at its current campus in the Sandy Mall.

The current enrollment of about 315 students could reach to about 750 this fall, with plans to have about 1,000 students in the years to come, Beehive Academy Principal Hanifi Oguz said.

“I am very excited and thrilled about the growth of the school and how we are now finally able to offer the same quality of education to even more students,” he said.

Working with architects at SilverPeak Engineering and One West Construction, plans are to renovate the main level’s 94,000-square-feet at 2165 E. 9400 South to open to students by fall 2022. The second level of 22,500-square-feet will be expanded for small group collaboration and expanded library space at a later date.

Half of the building will operate as an elementary school under the direction of Lisa Ronnenkamp, who worked in the public school system for 27 years, 12 as an English language arts coordinator who mentored new teachers in Davis School District and seven in administration.

Oguz, who has been Beehive’s director, will continue to oversee the secondary school.

All students will have access to STEM labs and programs as well as the school media center, which will be located in the center of the building.

“Primarily, the library is going to be utilized for elementary and junior (high students) because that’s what they mostly use.

The others usually use digital tools like digital libraries,” Oguz said. “We will have several engineering, STEM and computer labs, like technology centers, for both secondary and elementary students. They learn lots of programming, with a lot of software and different kinds of applications.”

Beehive’s courses range from computer science and information technology pathways to digital art and other career technical

education courses. For high school students, there are Advanced Placement and concurrent enrollment classes as well. All students have their own iPads.

The school’s cafeteria and gymnasium will be designed for all students. Also, on the 9.2-acre campus, a fenced playground will be constructed on the east side of the building. Parking will remain in front of the building and both the elementary and secondary will have secure entrances.

Beehive also offers several extracurricular programs, including video game club, CyberPatriot club, music jam, hiking, and robotics teams, which consistently perform well at both state and world competitions.

“We had outgrown our current location and have been on the search for quite some time; staying in Sandy is something we felt was important to us,” Oguz said.

Beehive Academy purchased and is paying for building improvements with support from the Utah State Charter School’s finance authority.

“We have been able to issue the bonds and we secured our bonds,” Oguz said about the building purchase at $12.4 million with another $13.4 million being earmarked for renovations and fees.

The school held its groundbreaking ceremony at its new campus in mid-January, with students helping to unveil a banner hanging from the building.

Beehive, which began as a vision of doctorate students to promote STEM education in underrepresented groups, has served thousands of students and was rated as the best high school in 2021 by the U.S. News and World Report.

Beehive Academy School Board President Calvin Zulich said that Beehive helps “close the STEM workforce shortage of our state and nation” through its rigorous curriculum, and the school has been recognized for it.

Last year, the school was honored as the best middle school in Utah by Niche; Beehive has received Best in State awards for the past five years. It also has been recognized as the platinum Level STEM school by the Utah State School Board and Utah STEM Action Center and as an Apple Distinguished School. Beehive also recently received an award from the AP College Board with the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award.

Lone Peak students aim to define community through glass art mural

L

one Peak fourth-grade student Tess Holmstead layered light pieces of green glass together while her friend Summer Jolley tried for a balance of the light and dark shades of green. Another fourth-grader Coleman Hurst put green glass together in a circular shape while his classmate, Jax Garrett, layered the glass from light green to darker shades.

It really didn’t matter how the glass was pieced, said fourth-grader Tatum Kirskey.

“It’s just fun doing it,” he said.

The students were creating trees out of small pieces of glass as part of the school’s fused glass art project. Those will be included in a community mural that will be unveiled this spring and hung as a permanent piece in the school’s art collection.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity that every student in the school can work together to create an awesome piece of artwork than will last longer than the years they’ll be here at the school,” Lone Peak Elementary artist-in-residence Allison Klinger said. “They can come back, see this art mural and be reminded of the time they had creating this and being here at school.”

The mural is designed from drawings students created last fall to portray what the Lone Peak community means to them.

Several students drew the school building, a school bus, children together on the playground, eagles (the school mascot), hearts, rainbows, trees, mountains and deer. Klinger merged those drawings into one design that now the students are creating right down to the number of bricks in the school building.

“The idea is that when you come to our school, you can look at the mural and get a sense of what we believe our community is,” said Cassie Walker, Lone Peak’s 2019 teacher of the year and Beverley Taylor Sorenson art teacher who came up with the concept and is coordinating the effort. “A lot of the drawings showed togetherness, like kids holding hands and playing at recess. We pulled those repeating themes of supporting and working together out of their drawings, so there will be a representation of that as well as our physical community.”

The more detailed and difficult elements, such as the eagles and eggs in the nest and the school bus, Klinger created and shared with 700 students in January, when each grade had the opportunity to create pieces of the mural, such as the mountains or trees. Kindergartners will add “sprinkles” or last finishing touches, to the mural to “add a little bit of whimsy to it,” Walker said.

After creating their part for the mural, students also had the opportunity to create a 2-inch by 2-inch ornament of small glass chips that will be fused and they can have as a keepsake, a reminder of learning about fused glass artwork and creating the community mural.

“It’s really important students have a personal project they’ll be able to take home to remember and enjoy,” Klinger said. “They understand the concept and the mural will hang here at the school, but having the glass fuse together in the hot kiln is magical and with that keepsake, they’ll have a piece of this experience to enjoy at home.”

Lone Peak fifth-grade teacher Bill Pritchard said his students embraced the project.

“This is so cool,” he said. “One kid said he doesn’t get to touch broken glass at home, so this broadens their perspective to have this experience. Many of them are excited to create the school mural and equally wanting to be creative in their own abstract.”

Walker agrees: “It’s really unique and rare kids create with glass. It’s so novel that it’s hard for them to contain their excitement.

It’s really cool.”

Students rotated in the art classroom every half-hour on two days in January to add pieces to the mural. Afterward, Klinger took them to her art studio, Western Art Glass, to fire them in her kiln. The pieces then will be mounted into a single frame, which will be hung between the gymnasium and cafeteria toward the front of the school. Accompanying it will be a QR code that visitors can scan and learn the back story of the piece.

“Because the students create the pieces and Allison puts them together, it will be more authentic since students are the ones designing it. At the end of the day, we really want kids to look at it and know they actually created it, and that their ideas are used and a professional artist helping to facilitate that,” Walker said.

The year-long activity was to include a kick-off assembly to walk students through the process, but as COVID-19 cases in the Lone Peak community reached higher numbers, assemblies and volunteers were curtailed.

posed to happen at the assembly at Klinger’s studio. This film will continue to document the entire process of the fused glass mural to share what students learn about working with glass as an art form, as well as the process of putting their ideas and drawings in the community mural.

“We want the community and our parents to understand the power in this process—not necessarily we’ve got this piece hanging in our hallway, but also what we have learned along the way and how we strengthened our community through this process,” Walker said. “It will document students’ designs, what they value, and steps along the way. It will connect our parents to the story behind the art—that they see and hear the kids’ thought process behind the experience and getting to work with a professional artist and come together to create something really big for the school.”

The mural and film are expected to be on display at the school’s annual art night, scheduled for March 28.

Walker also shared a shorter film, so students had a behind-the-scenes tour of the studio and learned more about Klinger as an artist from how she got into the field to her recent restoration of the glass windows in Salt Lake City’s Union Station that were damaged by the 2020 earthquake.

The idea to work with glass is something Walker has questioned while working with Lone Peak students. She had learned how to work with glass as an art form from Klinger, so she reached out to her, and learned Klinger previously had worked with students at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in Salt Lake City. However, the cost

was out of her elementary school art budget, so she shelved the idea.

Then last year, a parent wanted a special memento for fifth-graders since a traditional promotion wasn’t held because of the pandemic and asked Walker for suggestions.

With private funds, the 125 fifth-grade students created capstone glass art projects.

With success from that experience, and the support of the school community council and Principal Tracy Stacy, the decision was made at the beginning of the school year to use $13,000 in land trust funds to create this permanent installation.

“Cassie came to me with the idea and just hearing it, I was on board,” Stacy said.

“It’s a wonderful collaboration between students, a professional artist, our art teacher, classroom teachers. We’re bringing art in with our science, literacy, math and social studies and it engages students. It will bring color and light to our building. It’s just going to be stellar.”

It isn’t the first time a permanent piece of art has been created by students. In Walker’s first year of teaching, six years ago, students created a tile artwork that is hung in the office.

“I love pieces the kids create and sharing their vision,” Walker said. “There has been a lot of division right now and it trickles down to the kids when it’s talked about at the dinner table. Kids come here and it’s repeated. So, we really focused on what can we do to strengthen our Lone Peak community and bring everyone together and I think this is something that has really brought us together. The kids are excited about it, and it will be a lasting reminder.” l

Union Middle book club allows ‘safe space to share’ for students

U

nion Middle seventh-grader Bella Moody has a goal to read more—not just textbooks for assignments, but mysteries, graphic novels, fiction and other books for enjoyment.

She participates in the school’s monthly book club that meets during lunchtimes, discussing the same book that all club members read. This month they were sharing insights based on “Ground Zero” by Alan Gratz.

“It’s pretty awesome that real life events are put into the book,” Bella said.

The No. 1 New York Times best seller has two stories—one about a nine-year-old boy who went with his dad to work to the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, and discovered themselves trapped when the airplanes hit the towers; and the second, an 11-year-old girl from Afghanistan helping an injured American soldier, putting her family in more danger.

Union’s teacher-librarian Elaine Zhang guides the student discussion, asking thought-provoking questions about the book: What does he go through being trapped, covered in ash? Why did the author include an image? What emotions and thoughts would he likely have being stuck in the tower?

The conversation shifts from 2001 to 2019 and how Afghanistan has changed in the past 20 years and how females don’t get an education, but they are expected to be home as wives and mothers. The book club also talks about perspective and how likely many people weren’t even aware of the events on 9-11 in the United States or its impact since they live in a war-torn country.

Zhang said that discussions are free form.

“It’s a safe place to share what they read and relate their own experiences with the characters,” she said. “We get to understand more about the books through each other.”

Sometimes after discussions, students go back and reread the books that they are allowed to keep. Zhang uses funds from the school’s Scholastic book sales and library fines to purchase the books for their home libraries.

“We want students to have books in their own hands to learn from, to enjoy, to be exposed to different literature they may not always read on their own,” she said.

The middle school students have read a range of books from the 2017 Newberry Medal winner, “The Girl who Drank the Moon,” a book about a girl who figures out her magical powers, to the young readers edition of “I Am Malala,” the account of a girl who was shot by the Taliban for going to school.

“The students are learning about different genres from a fun fantasy story to a true story where they learn about acceptance and have empathy,” Zhang said. “I’ve learned students are more likely to pick up books that they normally wouldn’t have if they’re reading more genres and liking them. This helps to broaden their reading.”

Recently, book club members and others in the school listened to author Brandon Mull share about his writing and last year, author Jennifer Nielsen talked with students virtually.

Z News Dear Sandy Resident, I am happy to report the Curbside Bulk Waste Program will continue in Sandy, but with some environmental modifications. Last month, the Sandy City Council approved a new ordinance to improve and retain the program. This was the result of a long collaborative effort between administration, city council, and staff to address environmental issues but still provide this popular and valuable service to residents. As mayor, keeping the program going while meeting our environmental responsibilities is a top priority and I am pleased to deliver on this promise.

There will be a few changes and we will need to work together to keep our stormwater drains clear from debris, but it’s a great outcome for the city. Watch for more information about new

standards for the placement of pickup piles, education and enforcement on the city website, and bulk waste mailer.

Sandy City has always been a business-friendly city and to that goal, I have launched an economic development stakeholder group to ascertain the needs and vision of Sandy’s local business leaders. We are conducting robust conversations on neighborhood economic revitalization, workforce development and civic engagement. The future of this initiative is to bring businesses and residents together to create a collaborative plan to preserve the nature of our neighborhoods but identify where services and re-development are needed. I look forward to bringing these groups together to create successful outcomes for the city.

Stormwater 101 What is stormwater?

Stormwater runoff occurs when water from rain, snow melt, or sprinklers flows over the ground from areas of higher elevation to lower elevation.

Hard surfaces such as driveways, streets, and sidewalks prevent the stormwater from soaking into the ground or running off into a natural drainage.

Where does it go?

City curbs and gutters help funnel storm water into storm drains. These drains are connected to vast networks of underground pipes that direct storm water to a canal, creek, or river. If a drain is clogged from debris, localized flooding can occur.

Is it treated?

Stormwater is not treated. Any water, trash, pollutants, or debris that goes into the gutter will eventually end up in the Jordan River and flow to the Great Salt Lake. This causes many environmental issues, from algae blooms to accumulation of toxic sediments. Many plants and animals depend on clean urban runoff for water, shelter, and food.

How can you help?

The most important thing you can do is keep your curbs, gutters, and storm drains clean!

Follow these simple steps to be a good steward of stormwater and urban runoff.

• Use fertilizers sparingly and sweep up driveways, sidewalks, and gutters • Never dump anything down storm drains or in streams • Compost your yard waste • Clean trash and debris out of the curb area • Use organic or least toxic pesticides and herbicides and follow labels, or manage problems culturally.

Who We Are Sandy City Animal Services Department currently consists of eight full time employees.

• Between 1,200 to 1,400 animals come under our care and control each year.

• We are proud to be an open admission municipal shelter that has maintained a no-kill status since 2015 and boasts one of the highest save rates in the state. That success has come through partnerships and assistance in shared goals with many private rescue organizations and agencies like the Humane Society of Utah.

• We offer a broader array of services to our residents than most shelters in Utah, including nuisance wildlife abatement.

• In addition to the calls that we respond to, our daily routine consists of feeding and caring for animals in the shelter, training, park patrol, watershed enforcement, and public education.

What We Do at the Shelter & In the Field • We operate a no-kill shelter • We have a 24/7, 365 days-per-year field operation • Offer pet adoptions • Provide pet licensing • Enforce animal-related city ordinances and state laws • Provide shelter for all types of lost and abandoned pets within Sandy City municipal boundaries • Investigate complaints of animal cruelty, abuse, and neglect • Respond to emergencies involving injured or aggressive animals • Offer humane education programs for schools and community groups • Provide humane euthanasia at the request of Sandy City pet owners (fee for service) • We host or participate in community outreach events like Pet Clinics in the Parks and the Dimple Dell Earth Day Clean Up Pet Adoptions Adopting an animal is gaining a family member for the life of that pet. This can be a commitment of up to 20 years for a puppy or young kitten.

Our shelter is a stray facility, which means the animals we shelter have been lost or have been abandoned. These animals have been rescued by Animal Services Officers and citizens who have been unable to locate an owner.

Based on Utah state law, we must hold every animal for five business days to give the owner an opportunity to redeem their lost pet. If the pet is not claimed during that time, and the animal is healthy and friendly, it will become available for adoption.

We currently offer animals adoption by appointment.

Many animal control agencies refer their residents to expensive critter control companies, but we recognize that Sandy City is where urban meets mountain. Our community uniquely interfaces with wildland areas. We have Dimple Dell Park, which provides access and habitat for all manner of wildlife.

Our community has wonderful opportunities to observe nature and its creatures. On occasion some of these critters move into our yards and

cause property damage or otherwise create a nuisance. Our officers can work with you to remove skunks, raccoons, squirrels, snakes and more.

Community Cat Program In 2015 city council directed the establishment of a TNR and community cat program.

“Community cat” is the catch-all term the animal welfare community uses for feral and stray cats living and thriving outdoors in the community.

These cats are generally considered unowned or to have a loose connection with one or more people who care for them.

Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) is a humane and nonlethal approach to long term community and feral cat population control. TNR is considered by many to be the most effective method of reducing the number of community cats in a specific area over the long-term. It stops the problem because it stops the breeding.

Community cat caregivers provide day-to-day care & monitoring of the colony so that any newcomers can be quickly trapped and sterilized.

The negative impact of the cats is greatly reduced simply by spaying/neutering and is further reduced as the number of cats decrease. Neutered cats make less noise and fight less. i.e. No late-night howling, fighting, smelly male urine, or unwanted kittens.

Public Education Sandy Animal Services offer educational presentation that incorporate materials for all ages: youth through adults. What causes a pothole?

Potholes are created when the top layer of pavement and the material beneath, called the base or sub-base, cannot support the weight of the traffic. Two factors are always present in such a failure: TRAFFIC and WATER. The development of a pothole includes: 1. Snow-melt or rain seeps through cracks in the pavement and into the sub-base; if the moisture cannot adequately drain away from the sub-base and soil underneath, it becomes saturated and soft.

2. Trapped moisture is subjected to repeated freeze/thaw cycles and with each occurrence, the expanding ice lifts and cracks the pavement more. The passing traffic weakens the pavement, cracking it further.

3. As temperatures rise and the ice melts, a void is left under the pavement. This void collects more water, and during the next freeze, the void will enlarge.

4. Vehicles driving over the weakened pavement pound it until the surface breaks and collapses into the void below, thus creating a pothole.

Local church provides cereal, sponsors food delivery for Sandy Elementary students

or three years, Grace Lutheran Church has ensured Sandy Elementary students will start their day with something to eat during the winter break.

This school year, the church donated more than 400 boxes of cereal, so each student had one during the weeks when the Title I school wasn’t held.

Other Title I schools in the district— Copperview, Midvalley, Midvale and East Midvale elementaries and Midvale Middle— also received donations from other schools, churches or businesses, said Sandy Community Schools Facilitator Isa Connelly.

Grace Lutheran Church Senior Pastor Anthony Masinelli said they partnered with the Malt-o-Meal plant in Tremonton to collect the 20 cases of Post cereal which was distributed at Sandy Elementary.

The partnership between Grace Lutheran Church and Sandy Elementary is long-standing.

“They called us up about seven years ago and asked how they could help,” Connelly said, grateful for the service the church provides. “They pay for our (Utah) Food Bank truck as well.”

The cost of the truck delivering food each month to students in need is about $5,000 per year for the operating fees, she said, adding that each of the Title I elementary schools has a sponsor to help with those fees.

At Sandy Elementary, between 72 to 94 bags of food are distributed monthly to school children. l

was eight when I ran away from home. It was the summer of ’76 and my mother did the unspeakable. She banned a book in our home.

In the stack of books I’d checked out at the library, there was a paperback copy of “Jaws” I instinctually hid from Mom because she could be irrational. The book cover, with its looming shark and nearly-nude swimmer, might make her think the novel wasn’t “proper” for an 8-year-old.

With a plateful of homemade oatmeal cookies, I sat on my bed engrossed in shark attacks. My bedroom door opened and Mom (without knocking!) entered my room to put clothes away. Her mouth dropped open when she saw what I was reading. She grabbed it out of my hands and banned the book from the house.

How dare she!

I fumed and realized there was only one answer to such blatant oppression. I got my red suitcase and packed a nightgown, a change of clothes, my toothbrush and a Nancy Drew book. I stomped down the stairs, ignoring Mom as she stood in the kitchen doorway with her arms crossed.

Before I walked out of the house forever, I told her I couldn’t live with her cruelty any longer. I walked two blocks to my Aunt Judy’s house and announced I was moving in because Mom was an unreasonable tyrant.

I stayed the night, knowing Mom must regret her terrible behavior. I figured by the next day, she would be frantic with worry.

Served her right. (I later learned she’d called my aunt to let her know I was heading her way.)

When I returned home, I asked her if I could read “Jaws.” She said no. You can bet your sweet bookends I found a copy of “Jaws” and secretly read it cover to cover.

My effort to read banned books didn’t stop there. As I got older, I tore through Judy Blume's books, inhaled the “Flowers in the Attic” series, and absorbed “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Twice. My cousin and I would sit on the bookstore floor, reading salacious parts of popular bodice-ripper novels written by the queen of romance, Kathleen Woodiwiss.

I make it a point to read banned books, buy banned books, promote banned books and encourage my daughters to do the same.

I figure if a book is so powerful it has to be banned or burned, that’s a book I need to read.

Anything that gets people’s knickers twisted and touches a literary nerve goes on my toread list.

Parents and lawmakers are increasingly trying to create laws that shelve books that don’t fit in with their (mostly conservative) ideals. When that happens, society loses. Didn’t you read the (ironically) banned “Fahrenheit 451?”

I agree that 8-year-olds don’t make the best choices, but if we control the curriculum, frame the narrative, and put a conservative slant on history, we’re not doing those 8-yearolds any favors.

In January, when a school board in Tennessee banned the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel, “Maus,” parents pushed back.

The Salt Lake County Library System has dozens of copies of the Holocaust story where the Jews are depicted as mice, Germans as cats, and Americans as dogs.

I was happy to see it has hundreds of hold requests.

Looks like I’m not the only one making sure I read things that make me uncomfortable.
