Regions around the world sent their elite robotics teams to compete in the FIRST robotics world championships in Houston. Two Sandy schools, Alta High and Waterford School, were amongst those top 450 teams.

“It’s world class, the best teams from around the world,” said Waterford coach James Harris, who has had six teams in the past 12 years qualify for worlds. “There were tens of thousands of people there. We played with pairings that helped them as much as helped ourselves.”

Nine-year Alta High coach Ron Strohm said it was the school’s first trip to worlds.

“The atmosphere is just overwhelming at first,” he said. “But you just go in and compete, match after match, doing the best you can. It’s a different atmosphere for sure, but it’s the same competition.”

The competition challenges high school students to build industrial-size robots to play a field game in alliance with other teams, while also fundraising to meet their goals, designing a team “brand,” and advancing respect and appreciation for STEM within the local community.

Many teams have an opportunity to learn from professional engineering consultants, learn and use robotic software and hardware as well as compete in area tournaments and have a chance to qualify for college scholarships.

Education did make a difference last year, Cline said, who highlighted they had less than an acre of fires in Sandy last year.

“It was really good for a drought and dealing with fireworks during that time of the season,” he said.

DeKorver added firework calls went up in 2021, but the amount of fires dropped with it being the first year not having a park fire.

“This year we pushed a lot more education,” he said, which includes the #SkipAYear. “We feel very comfort-

able with the map we have currently.”

Councilwoman Marci Houseman said she wouldn’t push beyond what the fire officials would recommend.

She also said she believes in the city’s residents and their ability to “focus on critical matters.”

“I believe in people who are informed and who want to protect one another and property,” she said, later adding, “I don’t believe that bans beyond what we are legally allowed to do are necessary. I think there are reasons we have these boundaries.” l

Prohibited Areas for Fireworks, Fires

year after drought conditions saw officials around the state enact different measures of control over fireworks, the Sandy City Council unanimously adopted its firework restrictions map in early May. The map restricts fireworks above 1300 East and west of 300 West along with various high risk areas throughout the city such as parks, the TRAX line and canal trails.

Legal fireworks can only be discharged in allowed areas on specific dates. Fireworks are allowed between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. on July 2, July 3, July 5, July 22, July 23 and July 25. Fireworks are allowed between 11 a.m. and midnight on July 4 and July 24.

Fire Marshal Robert DeKorver told the council in May he believes the restrictions map “works both ways” preventing firework risk in dangerous areas while still allowing residents to light fireworks in other areas of the city.

While there is concern among residents that fireworks are still allowed, with some even wishing for a full citywide ban as drought conditions persist, Sandy’s fire officials feel the now-passed map represents the length of their legal capabilities.

“What you’re seeing meets the law and that’s what we’re going to be able to abide by,” DeKorver told the council.

In an April council meeting when the map was first discussed, he noted they give the council a recommendation based on their “comfort zone” of how they, along with the city attorney, interpret the law.

Fire officials did say that if conditions worsen, they can come back to the council for additional changes.

Fire Chief Bruce Cline explained no new fireworks-related bills were passed in the legislature this year meaning the law remains the same as last year, where only the state legislature has the ability to ban fireworks.

It was an issue that frustrated councilmembers last year and still remains raw for some.

Councilman Zach Robinson said they will hear from constituents all throughout July “wanting an all-out ban.”

“It’s just mind-blowing that the cities don’t have the authority to do more,” he said.

That authority, according to a city survey of residents, should belong to the city with 88% preferring the ability

“It’s tough compared to what we have in Utah. A lot of people say you go to Utah (to compete in regionals), you better bring your big boy pants; it’s hard to win here in Utah.

But when we got over to worlds, the competition was so hard. People have been doing these teams for years and they’ve got high annual budgets, $250,000 annual budgets, to build robots.”

While neither team were top contenders, they took away an “incredible experience,” Strohm said.

Alta won the Chairman’s Award in the Idaho regional April 2, the week before Utah hosted its regional. The Hawks received an automatic bid for worlds as well as a banner they could display at their robotics booth in competition and now, in their classroom.

They also added the Idaho regional robotics trophy that sits in the school’s trophy case.

In Houston, the Hawks competed both for the worlds title of the Chairman’s Award as well as in the robotics game.

“The Chairman’s Award is the highest award you can get in robotics, even higher than winning first at worlds. Everyone wants it,” Strohm said, adding that Alta’s team competed against other regional Chairman winners at worlds, finishing 48 out of 72 teams.

Since there was less than one month from the time they won in Idaho to when they needed to compete in Houston April 20-23, there wasn’t a flight with seats available for the entire team of 28 students, combining both the rookie and veteran team. So, with the support of sponsors, the team took a bus all night to arrive in time to go straight to the competition site.

Once there, they had a little bit of time to tweak their robot before competition began.

“Our robot was not 100% until we got there, but we fixed it right away and they were actually able to compete and climb and do really well,” Strohm said, as the students improved the shooting mechanism. “They fixed the climber as well, so they were able to do that probably 95% of the time.”

In Idaho, Alta helped another team with their shooter, practicing the “co-opertition,” or cooperative competition, value known in FIRST. Alta’s team also has helped others get involved and improve robotic skills, including local Girl Scouts, Scouts, and at the Ronald McDonald House as well as other area schools’ teams. They have hosted summer camps for youth wanting to get involved in robotics.

Those experiences were some of what helped in their presentation for the Chairman’s Award in Idaho, Strohm said.

“Every time we have been close to winning it (Chairman’s Award) in the past, we either made a mistake in paperwork or on the presentation. This time it was flawless,” he said. “I actually watched it in the very back

and when they finished, the judge just went, ‘Wow.’ Her comments were along the lines of, she’s done 100 of these, and they all sound the same, but ours was just different. It was real, not played out or memorized.”

Strohm also is proud of his robotics students; some veterans will receive a robotics and engineering letter at the end-of-the-year ceremony.

“Our students put in so many hours,” he said. “It’s hard for our team to actually be a No. 1 team when they are the ones building the robot. I don’t get involved too much.

I don’t want to be like the Pinewood Derby dad that builds the car his kid races. These students decide what kind of robot they’re going to build, then I’m there to help them or teach them how to build that type of robot. If it’s a crappy robot, then it’s a crappy one, but one that they came up with the idea, learned how to do and figured out there may be a better way to do it. I’m not going to tell them a better way. I would rather them make mistakes, fix their mistakes and learn from those mistakes. They really get a lot from that and they’re proud of their robot—no matter how good or how bad it is. When the part of the robot that they built works in a competition, they’re proud of that.”

Once Alta left the competition, they had an overnight bus ride back to Utah where the team began planning for next year’s competition.

“It was a great experience to see what all the other teams are doing and how they are doing it. On the way back, they were trying to figure out how they can build a robot in three weeks, not eight or 10 weeks. That’s a big key right there that they found out; they got to build faster and work around problems rather than rebuilding,” he said.

Alta sophomore Ella Hansen also competed in the Dean’s List Award, after winning it in Idaho.

Named after the founder of FIRST robotic competitions, Dean Kamen, Hansen “presented her thoughts what FIRST has meant to her and what she’s done with FIRST robotics” and was supported by Strohm.

Hillcrest High junior Nicholas Jacobs, who won the Utah regional Dean’s List Award, also competed at worlds.

His coach, Clief Castleton, received the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award at the Utah regional competition. Shortly before the COVID-19 shutdown in FIRST robotics in 2020, Castleton had paid tribute to the recently deceased Flowers, who inspired and supported many students in his 30-plus years of collaborating on the development of FIRST robotics.

In 2020, Waterford had qualified to compete in worlds, but it was canceled during the pandemic. In 2021, the FRC world championship again was not held, so having Waterford’s rookie team be invited as a wild card from the 40-team Utah regional was gratifying, Harris said, as all 16 members on both his rookie and veteran team, some who had qualified in 2020, were able to go to Houston.

“We go for inspiration. One of the things that both our teams pride themselves in is that we have a student designed, student fabricated, student robot. Our kids can do amazing things,” he said. “It’s very much a student engineering challenge.”

It begins with a lot of sketching and building.

“We start with sketches, then go to cardboard before making a laser cut out of wood.

We build prototypes and only when we’re sure what we’re doing do we go to metal,” Harris said, adding that the team has a sponsor that helps with sheet metal. “We’re always making upgrades or repairing or replacing parts that get damaged. It’s part of preparing students for understanding how engineering projects are integral to the modern world, how they can participate both at the design, fabrication, testing, verification and project management.”

The process begins in January when they learn the year’s robotic challenge and then, they design, test and rebuild the robot to compete in regional competitions in March and April.

Waterford also competed in Arizona where its veteran team was on the runner-up alliance. That same team lost in the quarterfi-

nals in Utah.

“Our students have done well; it’s been a good year,” he said.

While the rookie team wasn’t selected for an alliance in the Utah regional, the students stepped in when another team’s robot broke and helped that alliance to the “rubber match” or deciding game of the finals before falling to the top alliance. Their contribution prompted the team’s invitation to worlds.

At Utah regionals, one of the teams they formed an alliance with was from Taiwan.

“It was neat because one of our students is Taiwanese and he interpreted for us. We have played with teams from Turkey and from Brazil. It’s good to share a common interest and find commonalities there,” Harris said. “The best part for these kids is having that passion and having that opportunity after a couple years away.”

At the Utah regional, the Academy of Math, Engineering and Science received the Judge’s Award and finished 21st overall.

Other area high school teams that placed in the Utah regional competition include Bingham, ninth; Corner Canyon, 12th; Olympus, 17th; Hunter, 24th; Cottonwood, 25th; Jordan, 27th; and Hillcrest, 40th. l

Newcomers learn about movie history, filmmaking through Canyons Film Festival submissions

or the past 10 years, Jordan Valley teacher Glenda Folkersen thought it would be fun to make a short film with her students, but the idea was always put on pause.

This year, while teaching her students about the 2021 opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, Folkersen decided to hit record as her students brought the history of filmmaking to life.

Fast forward to April 28 as one of her students, Nathan Curtis, representing himself and his 10 classmates, was able to roll down the red carpet to claim the golden film canister as winners at the Canyons Film Festival. It was the first film Jordan Valley has entered in the 12-year contest.

“Every year when the film festival rolls around, I’m always saying, ‘Why doesn’t Jordan Valley participate in this?’

I’ve always thought it would be fun to make a short film with my students and enter it,” Folkersen said, who bounced around making a film with her student teacher Cora Bentley, who also liked the idea. “Without even stopping, I went to my back closet and pulled out a bin of hats and decided to let the kids choose which hat they liked and then we created the storyline.”

Folkersen followed where her students’ eyes looked as a way of selecting their hats.

“With their disabilities, some of them have their own form of communication.

They will gaze if they want something or if I’m holding up a squid hat versus a sombrero, they’ll gaze to say yes at the one they want,” she said about students at the school who have severe multiple disabilities and can be extremely medically fragile.

Part of the goal at Jordan Valley School is to improve the quality of life for students, age five to 22, and their families and Folkersen saw this as an opportunity her students could participate in, similarly to mainstream students.

As the project unfolded, Jordan Valley achievement coach Brett Taylor stepped up to help with the filming and even arranged for Canyons School District to paint his office wall green as a form of a green screen for the students in the film.

“We would dress our kids up, take them into the green room and if they had a speaking part, we would record it onto a switch device, so the kids could activate the switch to say their lines,” Folkersen said, adding that when one student was studying from home, Folkersen even went to her house to record her to ensure she was part of the film.

The opening scene has Miles Askvig dressed as a construction worker as he fits in with other workers to build the museum. Then, the movie history tour begins with Stephanie Moreno-Cervantes as a silent movie star. Abby Wilburn emerged in the first color movie as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz,” followed by Curtis as Mr. (Fred) Rogers in “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” Next, students explore documentary films as Ahmed Hmeida and Sam Willardsen, wearing squid hats, discover the underwater world. From there, the students’ movie moves into animation films starring Jade Stephens dressed as Jessie and Caleb Kirk appearing as Andy in “Toy Story,” and Emily Jensen wearing Elsa’s hairstyle in “Frozen.”

All the students were part of the “Ghostbusters” scene before Willardsen, joined by Monique Lopez and Connor Bruce, wearing sombreros highlighted the movie, “Coco.” The Jordan Valley studios’ film ends with fireworks.

During the process, Folkersen said it created happy memories for her students.

“We had so many smiles and fun while doing this. Nathan loves Mr. Rogers and one of my favorite experiences with this whole production was getting him in a sweater and tie to play the part of Mr. Rogers. When I turned him around in front of a full-length mirror, he laughed so hard.

It was the most joyous memory because he was so proud of himself and happy to play the part of Mr. Rogers in our production,” she said.

It ended up being more than just a movie as a class project.

“We thought this would be a great short movie for families to get out and watch with popcorn and just really enjoy, but we had so much more. We had so much attention and clapping from the audience.

Yes, we have students with disabilities, and it was our first time we’ve participated, but so many people came up and said how meaningful the movie was for them and how their own kids can’t watch it without smiling,” she said. “That’s what these kids do, they just make you happy.”

There were other first-time entries, like Hillcrest High’s Jayashabari Shankar, who won the high school public service announcement category with “Buy Local, Think Global.”

“I went out shopping and saw signs to buy locally produced items and that really sparked my interest so I did some research on that and thought it would be a really

cool idea to do that for a film,” she said.

“I’ve always been interested in writing and artistically spreading a message. I decided this would be a new challenge, especially after the last two years when so many things were virtual or canceled so I wanted to give it a try. I’ve never done a video in this format before, so I’ve learned about filmmaking. I liked the fast-paced tone of the PSA; it’s catchy and I could add music so people would remember it. It’s really been a good learning experience.”

They marked just some of the winners of the 600 students and faculty who submitted films this year. It was the largest in the film festival’s history, which marked the return of the event after a one-year absence because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020, the ceremony was held virtually.

Waterford students find passion in science, take third in state Science Olympiad

I

t was the fourth competition of the year, but on the bus ride that early Saturday morning in April there were some students with a little bit of nerves as they rode to the state competition in Cedar City.

Waterford School senior Allison Cao was determined to learn bird calls and kept repeating listening to two of them, trying to distinguish the difference before the Science Olympiad ornithology contest. She and her partner junior Luke Martindale had placed in the top two in the last two tournaments with their knowledge about North American birds.

“Of course, when they got to the test, there were no bird sounds on it,” Waterford Science Olympiad adviser Daniel Osipovitch said with a laugh. “It’s amazing to see the effort that students put in to become experts in their events. There’s a story behind each event and our students as to the effort they put into it and where they’re at in their schooling. It’s just amazing to see those students take that extra step. That’s one thing I love about Science Olympiad is that their interest can really blossom, and they can really focus on areas that really excited them.”

Even though they prepared for it, state wasn’t without mishaps, including in the bridge building competition, which they had won in the two previous competitions.

The competition has teams design and build a boomilever, a structure meant to hang on a wall while supporting a heavy load underneath, to achieve the highest structural efficiency.

“Our big snafu was our bridge broke, which it had never done before. It got bumped into while they were trying it, which caused it to break. And in our ping pong parachute contest, the parachute broke a little while testing.

We actually had a great test run and then in the actual event, we ran into some issues,” he said.

But it was without worry. Waterford won the bridge and ornithology contests and took second in ping pong parachute.

Osipovitch said Waterford prides itself on a ninth-grade bird project.

“We always say if there’s one thing we’re going to win, it needs to be ornithology,” he said.

Overall, Waterford took third place, edging out nearby Hillcrest High.

While only the 15-member Waterford varsity team competed at state, they took their 15-member JV squad to other competitions.

The first contest of the year was a national invitational supported by Cal Tech that was virtual—and like many online events, had a few hiccups with technology. At that online January contest, Waterford placed 108th out of 236 high school and college teams.

In early February, Waterford competed in 20 events at Centennial Junior High in Davis County, placing in 10 of them.

Before state, they finished second overall at the competition held at Snow College.

But Science Olympiad is more than just competition.

Osipovitch said students are learning to work together, learn outside of the classroom, take ownership of their learning and projects and learn leadership.

“Science Olympiad gives students a chance to dabble in some engineering stuff without being fully committed to our robotics program, like it gave them a huge opportunity to build the bridge. Our kids really took on their projects, the building ones and the tests.

They researched and prepared for events. It was pretty awesome to see students take that on themselves; they took ownership for their own work,” he said, adding that some students may find new passions by exploring other fields of science outside of the classroom.

Osipovitch also said that by working together, they learned from one another.

“I had a 10th grader in chem lab who knows more of the practical lab side of chemistry, but not as much of the theoretical,” he said, then paired sophomore Gus Gibbon with senior and team captain Devon Tonneson, who has taken AP chemistry. “The 12th grader really knew the mathematical side and the problem solving of chemistry. They worked together with each of them having a set of skills and they both learned from each other. We also have experts in our science department faculty who all know about the topics which is awesome, so our students can go to them and really ask deep questions.”

Under Tonneson’s leadership, along with the help of three other seniors on the team, they built an entire Canvas course for the team and checked in with students.

“It was mostly independent preparation.

Students would come in and ask for help if they needed it. These students find the test taking can be fun and they enjoy the challenge. They enjoy the process of taking what they know and expanding on it. It’s funny because they would never say that about a test in school,” he said.

Junior Rohit Singh chose several contests this year because he wanted to learn more about those topics—ones that have helped him decide to pursue a career in neuroscience.

“I’ve always been super passionate about medicine, so I thought this would be a good opportunity for me to explore my interests,” he said. “Science is one of my favorite subjects and the subjects at school are set, so there really isn’t any flexibility with what they teach and what I can learn. So, Science Olympiad is a way for me to channel my creativity and passion to learn about other topics outside of class. It’s just a really interesting and fun way to experience a variety of different fields of science.”

While the team started about five years ago with just five members, the program is growing despite the fluctuation of online and in-person, Osipovitch said.

“We have students who have done it before so they can help the newer students and pass the torch down; it’s really important for a program like this,” he said. “Next year we’re

Singh, who competed at several competitions this year including state, plans to be Waterford’s Science Olympiad captain next year.

“A lot of our middle schoolers and high schoolers have a passion toward science, so I want to be able to help coach them to see what their interests are and what events they want to try. Our coach, Dr. O, he’s truly passionate about the students and expanding the team. Singh hopes to continue offering his team resources on their Canvas page, hold meetings more often so they bond as a team, and have other faculty share their knowledge beyond classroom subjects with team members.

“I like our team; we’re like a community,” he said. “We’re all super passionate about science and are willing to help each other.”

Osipovitch is pumped about the outlook of his Science Olympiad team.

“We’re super excited about this whole program,” he said. “It’s been a really great way to involve students in science more.” l

Brookwood Elementary parent Evan Jamison said that as his six-year-olds were creating a marble run in the school’s multipurpose room during STEM night.

“This night is full of building block activities which will help build their interest in science and be a foundation they can use in their later life,” he said. “We do experiments at home—grow crystals, geode hunting and talk about minerals and make plenty of slime—but these are expanding their knowledge and interest.”

“And it’s fun,” said Charley, who along with her first-grade twin sister, Nora, had already driven a Brighton High robot, commanding it to place rubber ducks to the opposite side of the arena.

That was the purpose of both Brookwood’s and Park Lane’s STEM nights, to welcome back families into schools after not being allowed in schools during the COVID-19 pandemic and to engage them in educational oppor-

tunities.

“This gives families an opportunity to see what their kids are learning,” said Julie Clark, Brookwood PTA STEM night organizer and retired teacher. “I love math, and this gives us a community night to show the kids how exciting and fun the sciences are.”

At Brookwood, Clark worked with other teachers to host an activity for each area of STEM. There were science experiments, math races, coding, robotics and marble roller coasters.

Volunteer Kenzi Jones was helping students with a surface tension experiment.

“This is a great program that makes kids excited about learning,” she said. “It’s been a rush all night. We’ve had a great turnout.”

Ashley Theodore brought three kids who were trying out the experiment. They had just finished coding a Disney “Moana” activity as well as making a furball move spaces.

Getting to do “special stuff” also was the case at Park Lane, where more than 100 students and their families could float a ping pong ball with a straw and cup or a beach ball with a leaf blower. They also could blast off Alka-Seltzer robots and try cup stacking together with bungee cords.

Those and other activities, including a take-home fish in a bowl optical illusion activity, were coordinated by parent Jessica Smith.

Of all the opportunities, Principal Justin Jeffery said he had a favorite. He appreciated learning about static charge using Mylar tinsel and a PVC pipe.

“We just took three strands, cut them in half and tied them together,” he said, then placed a PVC pipe underneath. “They get an electrical charge front the PVC pipe, so it looks like they’re floating in air, like magic. In fact, we had a kid pretending he was Harry Potter making magic with the charm wingardium leviosa; it was cool.

I had never seen it and it’s really simple.

There were some other cool ones too.”

At both events, Code Ninjas hosted activities for students as well.

Through the years, Park Lane has offered several different STEM activities from programming a robotic arm to balloon rockets. A popular station has been the Angry Birds slingshot where students try to tumble over the entire stack of cardboard boxes.

“We do this so our kids get excited about any kind of technology and science and see what’s possible,” Jeffery said.

“They’re discovering how science is essential in every part of their lives.” l

Girls on the Run offers winning combination of fitness, making healthy decisions

L

ast year, Albion Middle School’s Girls on the Run program celebrated the conclusion of its spring season by running a 5K around the school campus, with teachers and families cheering them on. The year before, the program was essentially a few lessons virtually, but without a memorable closing run.

This year marks the return of the 5K run at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City, which is considered by many to be a highlight of the program.

It’s one that seventh-grader Brooklyn Van Sweden doesn’t want to miss.

“Last year was really fun and it was great we had so many teachers here to encourage and celebrate it with us, but I’m looking forward to running it at Sugar House and to be there to celebrate with all the friends I’ve made,” she said, adding that her dad will join her in the June 4 run that will bring Girls on the Run participants, including at Canyon View Elementary, from all over Utah to celebrate.

Girls on the Run is a nonprofit program that has involved more than one million girls across the United States and Canada to become independent thinkers, enhance their problem-solving skills and make healthy decisions while training for a 5K race. Teams, coordinated by volunteers at schools, usually meet after school for a couple hours each week.

The program started in 1996 in North Carolina with 13 girls at one school and now reaches girls in all 50 states. Utah jumped on board in 2007 with 30 girls at two schools. Now in its 15th year in Utah, Girls on the Run helps girls in 10 counties build confidence and make intentional decisions while fostering care and compassion for themselves and others.

The middle school program, Heart & Sole, helps girls discover confidence and understand the importance of physical and emotional health in a team setting. Albion has three trained volunteer coaches lead the girls through interactive lessons and running activities.

Brooklyn said that as a new student last year, it gave her an avenue to make new friends.

“We talked about being kind to people at school and to include the new kid and I was that new kid,” she said. “Through Girls on the Run, I was able to make some really good friends and have some trusted adults in my life.”

This year, she set her goal to become more active. She runs with her Girls on the Run teammates twice each week for eight weeks this spring.

Her teammate Bri Bernal is the only eighth grader on Albion’s squad.

“I really don’t like running, but I chose to do it and hang with my friends,” she said. “I’ve learned that the activities help me check in with my feelings.”

She also said the lessons she has learned is preparing her for high school next year.

“I know to ask for help, to get advice, or use what I’ve learned in different situations,” she said.

Seventh-grader Abby Mettler said the emotional health issue lessons has been beneficial.

“I’ve gone through some rough patches, and I’ve learned that I’m not alone with my problems and that they aren’t silly,” she said. “There has been a lot going on and I’m not the only one struggling. This has really helped; I’ve made some really good friends and the adults really care. It has given me someone else I know I can reach out to as well as my family.”

Abby, who said that running as well as the support and understanding of her team were the best parts of Girl on the Run, was looking forward to the 5K. Albion coach Lauren Nielsen plans to run the 5K with the other 14 girls and their running buddies as well as co-coaches Kristin Swain and Calliandra Hopkins.

“For some of our girls, this is a real celebration where they have taken huge strides to be able to run, build up their strength and conditioning and push themselves,” she said.

“They can run, jog, walk, skip and just celebrate finishing.

These girls are having fun together, just spending time with each other. They always have a laugh, a smile and love being silly.”

Equally, she said, they have a serious side when they focus on lessons that emphasis the whole girl, their identity tied to their body, brain, spirit, heart and soul.

“They’re finding their inner strengths of who they are and are making those connections,” Nielsen said. “This is a place where girls belong and while it may not look like a sports team, it’s a team where they can let loose and be there; there are no judgments, but rather support and friendship. As a coach, it’s rewarding to see the girls find joy. The past few years have been hard on them, so as they learn about themselves and make friends, it’s gratifying to see them become a team and take pride in that.”

At Canyon View, 35 third- through fifth-grade girls are planning to run the 5K. “I normally cap our program at 22, but I didn’t want to say no after not having a full season in 2020 and not having it at all last year,” said Canyon View coach Karla Antivilo, who coaches the team along with two parents. “It’s a great program that teaches girls some positivity, how to develop some leadership skills, how to work with others, how to cheer each other on.”

At the beginning of their program, Canyon View girls discussed “connection” and identified everything around that word. Since then, they’ve talked about empathy, positive self-

talk, choosing friends, exploring emotions, inner strength and communication.

Some of the lessons are even incorporated into their workouts.

“On Wednesday, we talked about encouragement and then each girl got a little paper that had a word of encouragement. The goal was every time they would pass somebody running, they would pass it on to encourage on one another. It reinforced our connection as a team,” she said.

Shortly before the 5K, the team planned to perform a service project. In years past, they held a drive for a women’s shelter.

“We let the girls brainstorm some ideas about ways they can serve our community; it teaches them a lot and puts a lot of our lessons into play,” Antivilo said. “The girls are starting at this young age to feel their value in society. The program also allows me as a teacher to see some of these girls outside my class with other girls. They may be quiet or shy in class, but when they’re around a group of girls who are cheering for them, they become more outgoing, and their personalities shine through. It allows them to see some of their strengths that maybe they weren’t able to see in other situations.”

Canyon View also traditionally holds a special team celebration before the 5K where they may have girls walk a red carpet and be given a card or a fun, special award for each of the girls from the coaches.

While running drew Antivilo into coaching the program, it’s the lessons that has kept her involved.

“I like seeing the girls in a positive and fun atmosphere. I wish there was a program like this when I was younger,” she said. “Most girls end up loving this program and they can’t wait to sign up for the next year.” l

Silver Mesa transforms into Hogwarts as reading comes alive

or one night only, Silver Mesa Elementary teachers were OK to let students make objects fly.

The charm, wingardium leviosa, was one of many spells students could try with wands they created that night at the school’s Harry Potter-themed literacy night.

The hallways and classrooms were jammed as families came to try their hand learning about potions, magical creatures, defense against the dark arts, transfiguration, divination, wizards’ duel and many others, all, of course, focusing around the works of J.K. Rowling.

“It’s just so fun to be back in person and to see so many happy people here and taking part in it,” Principal Julie Fielding said. “We didn’t have any parent volunteers helping last year and with new families, some of our parents haven’t even seen the inside of our building.”

In the kiva, families learned about taking care of magical creatures such as the red-footed tortoise or snapping turtle or knowing when the hairs stand up on the spiders, “it’s a bad day for all of us,” according to the Scales and Tails presenter.

Second-grader Aria Nelson opted to paint her wand with her favorite colors of dark pink, gold, teal and green after that

time.

“I think it looks nice, but I want to use it to make the snapping turtle disappear,” she said. “Then, I can use it to scare my sisters with it.”

Fourth-grader Blake Butler loved the magical creature presentation, said his mother, Ashleigh.

“The kids loved it and they loved this night with all the activities,” she said.

“They’ve really done a lot of extra reading this week because they’re sorted into houses and when they turn in the minutes, the house with the most minutes gets a prize.”

Parents Libby and Nate Grigg brought their kids, Charlie, Thomas and Dottie to take part in the activities, including visiting Honeydukes (a wizarding sweet shop) and sampling butter beer.

“All our kids are huge readers, and they know Harry Potter, so this has been so much fun,” Libby Grigg said. “We’re learning Parseltongue (snake language) now, but it’s been amazing to see the school transform.

Literally, it’s a huge undertaking for the decorations alone.”

She also said it was a great opportunity to see her kids’ classrooms since they were new to the school last year.

The Harry Potter theme, first intro-

duced by parent volunteer Mary Ann Curtis in 2017, has been built upon at each literacy night as now families and presenters often wear robes, hats and scarves of house colors and wanted posters of faculty and staff are posted in the hallways. There were even opportunities to learn the magic of green screen newscasts, learn about photography and get a picture with Dumbledore or try a writing activity with invisible ink.

She volunteered for the love and passion of reading.

“I feel like books can guide our students,” she said. “Books are the great equalizer for any person of any ability for them to relate to or escape into the world they read. Reading gives students an opportunity to gain an understanding and appreciation for personal life experiences and can help

enlighten and give us perspective. This is a way for students to immerse into that world of reading.” l

Salt Lake County to xeriscape 132 of the worst park strips and parking lot islands

I

n light of the ongoing drought, cities are looking for ways to save water without impacting the quality of life for residents. Salt Lake County has proposed to xeriscape 132 of the largest park strips and parking lot islands that are currently grass. The proposal is expected to save 5.2 million gallons of water each year.

“The drought has increased our sense of urgency for water conservation, but that need already existed with Salt Lake County’s growing population,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. “Last year, we made a commitment to reduce our water use, and we did. This is one of many long-lasting conservation solutions that will help protect our residents’ quality of life, our watershed, and the future of the Great Salt Lake.”

Park strips and parking lot islands to be targeted were selected based on size. The xeriscaping project will span nearly 40 county facilities and totals the size of three football fields. The large water footprint will make a significant impact on water reduction in the county.

According to Utah Water Savers, the average park strip consumes 5,000 to 8,000 gallons of water each year. Sprinkling systems at the Salt Lake County Government Center will also be made more efficient by targeting priorities, like trees. American Res-

cue Plan Act funds will cover the $2 million it will take to xeriscape the 132 park strips and islands.

“This proposal represents a proactive investment in water conservation measures by the county,” said Michael Shea, Salt Lake County’s Environmental Sustainability director.

In 2021, Wilson said the county reduced its water use by 13% after she challenged operations to cut use by at least 5%. These new water-saving measures build on the county’s long-term water-wise strategies, furthering the county’s water reduction.

County residents are asked to participate in the Flip Your Strip rebate program to help with water savings. The program will pay residents up to $1.25 per square foot when they replace their park strip lawn with water-efficient xeriscaping. The program is expected to save thousands of gallons of water each year. For more information, visit UtahWaterSavers.com.

The Shops At South Town set the tone for the SLCC Fashion Show

A

fter a COVID hiatus, the Salt Lake Community College Fashion Institute Fashion Show has returned. The show was put on by students graduating from the only college-level fashion program in Utah. Many SLCC fashion graduates have gone on to prestigious design schools, eventually landing jobs with companies like Ralph Lauren and Guess Kids.

“Our program is extremely rigorous and students have a long journey in order to get to where they want to be,” said Mojdeh Sakaki, SLCC Fashion Institute program manager.

“We're a huge family. It takes a village for the students to be where they are right now.”

The fashion show was held May 2, in partnership with Utah Arts Alliance which provided The Shops at South Town as a venue. The mall will display fashion designs from the show’s designers in its store windows.

Students in the fashion show production class collaborated with the fashion students to organize the event, set up the room, choose the music and do all the work behind the scenes. Professional models presented original designs created by students in their final year in the fashion program.

Collections included costumes, streetwear, office attire, cosplay and ready-to-wear items.

Designers in the school’s collection class created their own concepts, developed ideas, illustrated design boards, gathered fabrics, made patterns and sewed the items.

Taylorsville native Aurelia Jones presented her fanciful collection based on nature and fairies, complete with iridescent wings and floral colors. Jones will graduate from the fashion program this spring and hopes to work as a seamstress for local theater companies.

“I’m the youngest of six kids and all of them did theater,” Jones said. “My mom would help make all the costumes. I went everywhere with her and I loved it.”

Jones said creating her collection was time-consuming.

She went through the process of creating mood boards to find inspiration.

“I’ve always loved the mountains, and I wanted to do something related to nature. But I didn’t want to do regular fashion. I thought it would be so much fun to make fairies come to life.”

Other designers showcasing their collections were Hope Ainsworth, Jade Joyo, Shreya Parihar, Debra (Niky) Phipps and Alicia Scott. During the event, visual displays were set up around the event space to highlight different fashion specialties including evening gowns, tailoring and bridals.

“Right now, we have this opportunity to really step back and consider how we want to re-approach style and design,” says Sakaki, noting that more than 90% of the retail industry shut down during the pandemic.

The SLCC Fashion Institute offers three degrees: fashion design, visual merchandising and technical apparel designs. The courses were created to help students interested in fashion-related careers. Many of the school’s graduates take jobs as seamstresses, pattern makers, merchandisers and illustrators.

“There have been a lot of changes. Suits are gone. Comfort and leisure are booming. And new 3D printing technology is introducing new types of fabrics and patterns,” Sakaki said. “It is an exciting time to be in fashion.”l

Area high school students honored with Aspirations in Computing awards

urray High School senior Mary Seeley knows a thing or two about science and technology.

She has been part of a five-time first-place underwater robotics team; learned about making computer chips, coding, circuits, wiring, ethics, personal privacy and other aspects of cybersecurity at Brigham Young University camps; competed with VEX robotics and Science Olympiad on her high school team; been involved with Murray High’s tech club; was named Murray High’s Sterling Scholar in computer technology; served as a SheTech statewide student board member; started a SheTech club at her school; and has interned with both SheTech and Murray School District’s CyberCorp.

The 4.0 soon-to-be Spartan graduate recently was honored as a state award winner of National Center for Women & Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing. She was one of 60 area high school students honored at the April 30 ceremony held at the University of Utah.

“This award highlights all of my activities that I’ve done in tech, in STEM and computing,” said Seeley, who plans to attend BYU in the fall to study for a possible career in software development. “It showcases all the hard work I’ve put into it. It means a lot as I really enjoy the opportunities tech has given me and those opportunities have opened up a lot more. This year, and last year, there were some amazing women who spoke (at the ceremony) and really inspired me.”

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors ninth- through 12th-grade students for their com-

puting-related achievements and interests, and encourages them to pursue their passions. Award recipients are selected based on their aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing, as demonstrated by their computing experience, computing-related activities, leadership experience, tenacity in the face of barriers to access, and plans for post-secondary education.

Alta View Hospital’s new surgery robot marks age of progress

lta View Hospital is excited about the recent arrival of their new surgery robot, which they’ve named Vince.

Dr. Mark Mawhinney, general surgeon at Alta View says that Vince has helped him perform laparoscopic surgery with even more precision and 360-degree visualization.

“I am thrilled we have finally obtained our own robotic surgery platform.

We do a lot of minimally invasive surgery here, and I’ve been training for the last couple of years to be able to use this,” Mawhinney said.

Though the robot and its accompanying dock station for the surgeon are mobile, Alta View has a dedicated operating suite for robotic surgery.

Mawhinney wants to clarify that this doesn’t mean a robot is doing surgery on

patients.

“The robot is the tool; the surgeon is the one doing all the work. They do it from a dock where they can visualize everything, and they use hand and foot controls to guide the robot’s movements,” Mawhinney said.

Laparoscopic surgery is minimally invasive and has changed the way many surgeries are done. In traditional surgery, an incision was made wide enough for physicians to visualize the surgical site, such as for an appendectomy.

With laparoscopy, much smaller surgical incisions are made and laparoscopic cameras are inserted. The physician visualizes the surgical site through the cameras. The surgery is less invasive, the scars smaller and recovery time is much shorter.

“Laparoscopic surgery has been the norm for many years in procedures for urology, hernia repairs and gynecological procedures. The robot is the next step.

“I am amazed at the technology. I like to tell myself, ‘This is early days.

This is the least advanced it will ever be,’” Mawhinney said.

Alta View held an open house April 15 where the public could come see Vince and try out a replica “demo robot.” Vince is a da Vinci XI robot made by Intuitive.

Most high-level hospitals and academic institutions have a robot, so Mawhinney is happy to see that kind of technology at Alta View, which is considered a smaller hospital.

“In the past decade or so robotic surgery has really taken off nationwide. My partner and I wanted to pursue the training, and we know it’s been a big financial undertaking for the hospital. But it’s becoming so widely adopted that it may in the future be the standard,” Mawhinney said.

Mawhinney said his patients are curious, and most of those he’s suggested it to have been excited to give it a try. He performed his first three procedures on March 28: two hernia repairs and a gallbladder surgery.

“I’m not at the bedside with the patient during robotic surgery—I’m sitting at a console in the corner. I put my head into a viewer—it kind of looks like a virtual reality viewer.

“It lets me see in 3D what I’m doing.

I have better depth perception, I can move the robot in all directions to explore or suture at any angle. Unlike humans, the robot has no limits as far as spatial relations and fine motor skills,” Mawhinney said.

In the viewer Mawhinney sees the surgical image projected on a monitor, which is what he was already seeing

during conventional laparoscopic surgery.

In addition to greater precision for patients, Mawhinney sees a lot of advantages for surgeons.

“Traditional bedside surgery is terrible for the OR staff’s joints because you’re standing for hours a day. This is much more ergonomic and accommodating for a surgeon.

“It’s good business for the hospital, too. The minute we announced we had Vince, surgeons were asking for admitting privileges here. This is something people are excited to be a part of,” Mawhinney said.l

On May 3rd, I presented the Mayor’s city budget to the people of Sandy. This is the result of a months-long process where I, along with my finance team and department heads, have scrutinized expenses, prioritized services and identified savings in order to deliver a lean and balanced city budget to the taxpayers of Sandy who are the center of everything we do.

Since then, our weekly City Council meetings are dedicated to reviewing my proposed budget, one department at a time, before the council votes to adopt the final FY22-23 city budget. Far from boring, this is the most fascinating work we do all year because our budget demonstrates our community goals and values.

As mayor, my job is to ensure every tax dollar is managed carefully to improve quality of life in Sandy. Do we want a safe community that’s prepared in emergencies? Police and Fire Departments need the biggest chunk of our city’s budget for public safety and emergency services. Do we want roads maintained and swept, snow plowed, garbage services, recycling and curbside bulk waste continuing? Every citizen survey ranks parks, trails and recreation at the top of what people love about Sandy. From the big projects down to the little details - how we spend our budget is a direct reflection of your priorities and expectation for high level services. Sandy City is on strong fiscal footing with our AAA bond rating and savings to start funding one-time capital projects that were deferred over the last two years due to COVID. For years, the city has grappled with how to fund our much-needed long term capital projects like renovating our busiest fire station (Station 31 on 9000 South), rebuilding the city’s mechanic’s garage and vehicle storage at Public Works headquarters, upgrading the historic I S S U E # 93

building that is home to Parks & Recreation, as well as the renovation or rebuild of Alta Canyon Sports Center.

Like every business, however, our operating budget is feeling the pressure of the same realities you must be facing in your household budget. With today’s economy, we are struggling to keep up with record inflation, higher wages in a tightening job market, skyrocketing fuel prices and maintenance costs that are gobbling department budgets with each mile our police cars, fire trucks and ambulances, and bulk waste dump trucks travel down the road.

The good news is there’s no property tax increase this year. With expenses on the rise, we have been fortunate to receive increased sales tax revenue to help us meet our needs.

However, a shortfall remains and that is why I proposed a fee increase for household garbage services to cover the cost of increased fuel and vehicle replacement and ensure our popular and convenient curbside bulk waste service is properly funded. Even with the fee increase, our monthly garbage bill is still lower than surrounding cities that do not offer bulk waste pickup.

Although my proposed budget does not include a property tax increase, this is a good time to talk about where your property taxes go.

You might be surprised to learn that only 10% of your property taxes go to Sandy City. The lion’s share goes to school districts and to the county. For an average home value of $475,000 residents pay just $307 for all of the city services provided.

Sandy actually has one of the lowest property taxes in the valley. Compare Sandy property taxes to Salt Lake City where the same household pays $894 per year or West Valley at $783. We are proud of the efficient use of tax dollars that fund police, fire, road repair, parks and trails, the list goes on and on. You might also be surprised to know that property tax does not increase when home values rise. The city receives a set amount of property taxes yearly regardless of home prices rising and falling. Property taxes

can only increase through the truth in taxation process which requires a public meeting and a vote by the city council. To learn more about your property taxes you can visit sandy. utah.gov/propertytax.

Over the coming weeks, the city council will be examining the budget, one line-item at a time. You are welcome to attend and weigh in at the 5:15 citizen comment. Please attend the upcoming council meetings on June 7th and June 21st to be part of the process that molds my proposed budget into a final product. Sandy City Council and Council Staff CITY COUNCIL’S ROLE IN THE CITY

Sandy City has a Council-Mayor form of government, meaning our government is entrusted to two separate, independent and equal branches. Our executive branch consists of a mayor and administrative departments, while the City Council forms the legislative branch. Our City Council consists of seven members: four representing individual districts, and three at-large members. Our current City Council Members are: District 1, Ryan Mecham District 2, Alison Stroud District 3, Zach Robinson District 4, Scott Earl At-Large, Marci Houseman At-Large, Cyndi Sharkey At-Large, Brooke D’Sousa The Sandy City Council plays an integral role in the development of Sandy City’s vision for the future. By carrying out the responsibilities of Sandy’s Legislative branch, the City Council creates laws and policies that move Sandy forward.

As a municipal council, the Sandy City Council’s primary responsibilities include: • Responding to the needs of residents • Establishing City laws and policies • Adopting an annual City budget • Approving City general plans • Determining which services the City should provide • Providing oversight of city administration, • Determining tax and fee rates • Providing advice and consent for appointments to key city positions • Making appointments to special citizen advisory committees • Making decisions related to land use and economic development

CITY COUNCIL AND THE BUDGET One of the most important of the council’s primary responsibilities is the review and adoption of Sandy City’s annual budget. Each year, the Council identifies key priorities for the budget. For fiscal year 2022-23, the Council has identified the following priorities: • Maintain a Highly Qualified Employee Workforce - Fund an employee compensation plan that is both market competitive and focused on strategic growth • Develop and Maintain Community Facilities - Improve the Alta Canyon Sports Center - Update key City facilities • Maintain and Improve Basic Core Municipal Services - Fund enforcement for the bulk waste program to ensure its success - Foster community connectedness and cultural enrichment through new community events and workshops

- Improve workplace safety for City employees • Develop and Improve the City's Recreational Trails and Increase Recreational Opportunities - Begin the process of funding and building a centrally located, all-abilities playground • Preserve and Expand Existing Businesses/ Seek New Clean Commercial Businesses - Emphasize economic development and bring new businesses to Sandy City, keeping taxes low for residents

WHO ARE THE CITY COUNCIL STAFF?

Currently, the City Council Office consists of three full time employees. Dustin Fratto, our Executive Director, manages the office and assists the City Council on all aspects of local, legislative, government. Liz Theriault, our Policy and Communications Analyst, assists in crafting policy and runs the City Council’s communications, including social media. Our Office Manager Chris Edwards serves as our official Clerk who keeps and maintains records and minutes of City Council Meetings, assists in council outreach, and organizes council events.

WHAT COUNCIL STAFF DOES FOR THE COUNCIL AND THE COMMUNITY

The Council Staff are the behind-the-scenes task force of the City Council. On a weekly basis we: • Compile the items and information for each City Council Meeting’s agenda, • Work with Council Members, City Staff and Administration on policy development and implementation, and other programs or initiatives that shape Sandy City, and • Assist the Council in fulfilling each primary responsibility of the legislative branch The Council staff exists to assist the City Council in responding to the needs of Sandy residents, to serve as the Councils subject matter experts on municipal issues, and to

help the council tackle the primary responsibilities of the legislative branch of government.

Our favorite function is to serve as liaisons of communication with Sandy residents. Our staff work to answer all constituents’ calls, emails, questions, and concerns on any and all Sandy topics. While we work to connect our residents with their District and At-Large representatives, our staff is also highly knowledgeable on city issues and workings, and often assists residents in finding the answers to their questions or the right contact information on how they can learn more.

The City Council staff also works to connect the Council with residents through wide-spread community outreach. This includes inviting Scout Troops to Council meetings, connecting with local schools on field trip opportunities, running the Youth Council program, and providing special recognitions to prominent Sandy residents and businesses.

We are always looking for new and more efficient ways to connect with our residents, and in the past two years, have developed multiple platforms that foster citizen engagement and feedback. Public Works Quick Tips: 1. For the safety of pedestrians and motorists, if the trees or vegetation at your house has branches that hang over the sidewalk or street, they need to be trimmed to a height of 14 ft. above the curb and 8 ft. above the sidewalk.

2. If you have a large project at your home and you need to dispose of materials, reserve a dumpster on the Public Works webpage and you can have it delivered to your home for up to 72 hours.

3. If you see a problem on the roadway such as a pothole or road debris, please contact Public Works at (801) 568-2999 or use the CityServe App so we can quickly resolve the issue.

4. If either your waste or recycling container is damaged, it can be repaired or replaced free of charge. Contact Public Works at (801) 568-2999 to report the problem.

5. The change to every-other-week recycling collection began July 1, 2021 for all Sandy City residential WM customers. If you find your bin isn’t sufficient, you may swap your WM 64-gal recycling bin for larger 96-gal bin for no additional fee. Please contact Public Works at (801) 568-2993.

6. Approximately 25% of the items placed in curbside recycling containers are non-recyclable.

SANDY CITY STREET LIGHT INNOVATION Great news! Last month the Public Utilities Street Light Department was pleased to announce that their multi-year LED light bulb replacement project is now complete. Originally expected to extend into 2023, this team worked at an accelerated pace for over two years to complete the project eight months ahead of schedule. The early completion of this project is great news for Sandy residents because these bulbs reduce the city’s energy footprint and help to save the city money. In fact, by replacing all 8,385 of the city’s street lights with high-efficiency LED light bulbs, the city will save an estimated $180,000 per year. These savings, combined with incentives and rebates from Rocky Mountain Power, mean that the entire project will pay for itself within less than a year. Once the project costs are recouped, the outcome of this project is significant monetary and environmental savings for the Sandy City, as well as another important step forward in the Sandy Sustainability 360° initiative. Overall, these new LED bulbs are expected to save over 3.8 million kilowatt hours and will reduce Sandy's greenhouse gas carbon footprint by over 2,600 tons per year. Additionally, the new LED lights require less maintenance, last longer, and come with a five-year warranty. Well done, street light team!

Honorees selected at the inaugural Comcast RISE Black Excellence Event

ardware Creative Collective and Comcast partnered to host the inaugural Comcast RISE Black Excellence Event in Salt Lake City on Apr. 20. The celebration honored Utah Black Creatives in a range of industries from the arts, business, education and film to mental health, armed forces, tech and venture capital.

Honorees were selected based on their ability to showcase their creativity through inspiration, intersection and innovation.

“It was truly amazing to see something that started as a vision and brainstorming with folks around a kitchen table turn into an extraordinary celebration of Utah’s Black creatives,” said Deneiva Knight, External Affairs Director, Comcast Mountain West Region. “For me, Hardware Collective is a platform for Black creatives to acknowledge and celebrate themselves and their peers versus waiting and hoping to receive accolades from outsiders. The love and appreciation in the room that night were unmatchable.”

Alta High softball had all for one, one for all attitude

F

or this year’s Alta High softball team numbers didn’t really matter.

Though the team did not get the same amount of girls trying out for the team as they expected from years past, the team surpassed expectations and achieved a lot this season.

“The girls have learned that it does not matter if we have 50 or 12 players on the team,” said coach Kristin Evans. “They play for each other as one team.”

Sadie Gardner’s batting average for the season was .650, Abby Southern finished at an average of .516, and Adilee Dake was at .500. These three girls have smashed the team record for the year and have put in the hard work to join the 500 and up club.

“Our accomplishments will be that they are better on and off the field then when they started the year,” Evans said.

Other notable accomplishments this season include Sadie Gardner’s whopping 25 stolen bases, Cozzette Harrison’s 14, and Jessica Harrison’s 12. These girls have spent the year striving for greatness.

“One motto for our team is to do 1% better every day,” Evans said. “It means working on yourself or taking time to be a better teammate.”

In addition to their commitment to the

Alta Hawks softball team, there are two players on the team that have their sights set on a slightly bigger goal.

Gardner and Southern plan to play next level softball. However, both are undecided on which college they will attend and other playing opportunities they will pursue.

Ending the school year playing in the state tournament, Alta beat Hillcrest 17-5 in the first game before falling to Box Elder 103. l

Another professional sports team comes to Utah

Z

ions Bank Stadium continues to become a sports destination in the state as yet another professional sports organization, the Salt Lake Shred, made its debut there last month. The Shred compete in the American Ultimate Disc League, a fast-growing league that has expanded with three additional teams this year.

It’s actually not the first professional ultimate frisbee team to exist in the state of Utah. The Salt Lake Lions were formed in 2014, but lasted only one year. Since that time, local ultimate organizations around the state have worked diligently to build the sports’ popularity at a grassroots level.

“The youth are getting better and better and our college teams are getting increasingly more attention on the national stage. We wanted to provide an opportunity to compete at the very highest levels to give kids something to shoot for,” said Joel Dehlin, one of the founders of the new team.

A press release by the Shred cites national success by local teams - both at the high school and collegiate level - as one reason for optimism. Lone Peak High School for example, had both a boys and girls team place in the top three in a national tournament.

Celebrities compete in American Cornhole League event in Sandy

T

he American Cornhole League was founded in 2015 by Stacey Moore. The American Cornhole League’s mission is to promote awareness for the sport on every level and, as the saying goes, “anyone can play, anyone can win.”

The American Cornhole League has created apps and software that allow Cornhole lovers all over the nation to check local leagues, tournaments, and any other Cornhole event going on in the area.

“Cornhole is a more strategic game than I originally thought,” Moore said.

Cornhole has become such a popular sport that The American Cornhole League has been contracted with ESPN for a three-year deal.

“We have five ESPN events each year that we put on, one of which was the event in Salt Lake City,” Moore said. That event was held in May in Sandy’s Mountain American Expo Center.

At this year’s Superhole event four celebrities competed for an invitation to compete at the World Championships that will be held in August. They also competed for $100k for the charity of their choice.

Local celebrity Lisa Barlow from “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” participated in the event. So did Los Angeles Charger’s Kyle Van Noy and retired San Francisco 49ers Vernon Davis.

But it was actor Joseph Baena and his partner, ACL Pro Jimmy Youmans who took home the championship and will be joined by seven other celebrities and ACL Pros in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

“We also have nine events the we partner with CBS on,” Moore said, “as well as 30 national events that you can sign up for with a local ACL director.”

Salt Lake County receives EPA funds to clean up contaminated sites for development

B

rownfield areas in Salt Lake County can hinder development because, without proper cleanup, redevelopment or reuse they could spread contamination to surrounding areas. Most brownfields are properties with old gas stations, auto repair shops and dry cleaners, or near smelters, railroad lines and mines.

But the Environmental Protection Agency has awarded Salt Lake County nearly $4 million in an effort to clean up these sites and create vibrant communities and business centers.

“We’re grateful for the EPA’s substantial investment in Salt Lake County,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. “It expands our ability to effectively leverage the revolving loan fund and make a difference.”

The EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund allows the county and its coalition partners (Salt Lake City and Ogden) to issue loans to public or private property owners who meet EPA qualifications for assistance with brownfields.

Funds are expected to help clean at least 10 properties in the next few years, many of which are in former industrial areas that need significant cleanup to be safely redeveloped.

Loans are available to qualified governmental entities, site owners, or developers with lowto zero-interest rates.

“With our community’s history of industrial and mining work, there’s no shortage of properties that could use this EPA money for cleanup efforts,” said Kersten Swinyard, program manager for the Wasatch Brownfields Coalition and Salt Lake County senior economic development manager. “We’ll use this money to accelerate redevelopment on those contaminated properties and make our cities safer and cleaner for everyone.”

In 2021, Centro Civico Mexicano received funds to work with the county to remove asbestos, mercury, hydrocarbons, and other contaminants in the soil. The remediated property now features a community center and 61 apartments for low-income seniors. The cleanup led to more than $25.2 million in leveraged redevelopment funding on the project.

The Wasatch Brownfields Coalition works closely with the EPA and the Utah Department of Environmental Quality throughout the cleanup processes. The EPA has awarded $5,850,000 in total to Salt Lake County throughout its program history.

All Canyons District’s schools to dismiss early on Fridays to allow for teacher collaboration

By Julie Slama | j.slama@mycityjournals.com ith a 5-1 vote, Canyons Board of Education approved to have all Canyons School District’s elementary and secondary schools dismiss early on Fridays starting in fall 2022, allowing teachers to have time to collaborate.

It was not without many discussions and considerations, said Canyons Superintendent Rick Robins.

“We’re excited that this will give our teachers the opportunity to collaborate, not just amongst their peers in the building, but also with other colleagues who are teaching the same grade or subject as well as vertically with grade school or high school teachers working with the middle school teachers,” he said. “The ultimate goal is to improve student academic outcomes.”

The proposed times for early outs on Fridays in elementary schools are similar to existing pick-up times this school year with dismissals around 1:10 to 1:55 p.m.

Middle school students will no longer have a late start on Fridays beginning in August. The early out dismissal times on Fridays are estimated to be around 1 to 1:30 p.m.

High school students will be dismissed at about 12:55 p.m. on Fridays beginning in the fall. Alta High will discontinue its late start.

Robins said the district will finalize the times and share those with patrons.

Much discussion focused on determining the day and time of the collaboration during the third presentation to the board.

Student safety, busing availability, staffing at external day cares or availability of older siblings taking care of younger brothers and sisters, ability to have after-school activities or jobs, family time, research on late starts benefitting other students, school schedules, before-school and after-school programs, patron input, and other topics were discussed.

“I appreciate the board seeing the value of allowing our teachers to have collaboration time and making that a priority.

We looked at every consideration to see what has the least impact on students and families in providing our teachers this valuable time,” he said. “This is really a commitment to provide our educators embedded time for better student outcomes. Hillcrest forensics team members to compete at nationals in June

illcrest High junior Priyanka Mathews will spend time editing and rewriting her original oratory before she competes in nationals this month.

She and junior Michael Chen will compete in person at the National Speech and Debate Association tournament June 12-17 in Louisville, Kentucky. Teammates Sofia and Sara Moeinvaziri will compete virtually.

“I’m wanting to improve the writing of the speech itself and practice a ton in front of a bunch of people to get their feedback,” said Mathews, who competed virtually at nationals last year. “My speech is about obedience and its role in society.

First, I talk about the Stanley Milgram campaign conducted in the 1960s and his shocking tests on obedience and conformity as well as a couple other experiments. Then, I shift into this culture of political conformity where we feel like we need to be in line with our party and not rebel within the party.”

Mathews finished second at state.

Chen will compete in Lincoln Douglas debate. The Moeinvaziri sisters qualified in public forum, but since they are virtual, they will compete in pro/con online contest.

First-year coach Emily Kunz said after having turnover of coaches the past few years, mixed with the COVID-19 pandemic, it has resulted in a small Hillcrest team of about 12 consistent members.

“It’s been a rebuilding year,” she said. “These students have really had a lot of determination and tenacity to keep going. They’ve really done things on their own; they’re go-getters.”

Kunz said that while many schools have an academic class that supports the team, Hillcrest does not. So, labs have been

optional and experienced students have stepped up to coach younger classmates.

“Our students are dedicated to find the time to research their own material, write their speeches and practice. We’ve had students step up in leadership roles to mentor these younger students so they’re not only exception in their events, but exceptional and generous in their time and willingness to help others,” she said.

She pointed out that Sofia has taken on the leadership role of coaching newcomers, especially in public forum.

At state, newcomers Nayantara Nair and Marla Tumenjargel were quarterfinalists after placing fourth at region.

“I’m excited about next year and the direction the team is heading. We have a lot of promise and it’s just fun being around these students,” she said.

That new direction includes the introduction of not one, but two speech and debate classes as more than 50 students have expressed interest.

“I’d love to win regionals with a bigger team,” Kunz said.

This year, she had some top region finishes including Mathews, first in oratory; Moeinvaziri sisters, second in public forum; Dheeraj Vislawath, third in Lincoln Douglas; Thomas Lu, fifth in Lincoln Douglas; Saisha Vankayalapati, fifth in Informative; and Sona Kannan, sixth in student congress.

The Moeinvaziris qualified at the March 5 Sundance national qualifying tournament, one of three tournaments they had in four weeks, sandwiched between other club state competitions and advanced placement and International Baccalaureate classes.

“Debate is always a high stakes competition,” Sofia said.

“It was definitely a relief to get first and qualify.”

Now Kunz plans to review judge feedback with the national contenders and be working to do mock competitions.

“I’ve lined up people who have judged at nationals come in and give them feedback, which is always valuable,” she said.

Kunz, who took part in policy debate in high school, is a new teacher at Hillcrest who also practiced law for nine years in New York City.

“As an English teacher, we’re always talking about communicating effectively and supporting it with evidence. I know how to craft an argument and support it with evidence and can help students with that. What they’re doing is so important. I’ve seen the practice side and importance of making an effective argument,” she said. “We have some incredible students at Hillcrest. It has just been a joy to work with these amazing kids and mentor them.”l

A one-horse race

W

hen I was in eighth grade, I was elected to the class senate. In ninth grade, I was elected as a cheerleader. Did I deserve these titles?

Probably not. But I’d bribed fellow students with copious amounts of candy because that’s the American way.

After a series of decidedly terrible life choices, my scholastic career drove off the rails and I never ran for election again. When I turned 18, I registered to vote and I’ve cast a vote in every election since. I also respond to Twitter polls, fill out Amazon reviews and take surveys at the bottom of yard-long Kohl’s receipts.

Now that I’m a semi-functioning adult, it’s up to me to choose the right people to lead us into the future. Since the future is nuclear bomb-shaped, we won’t need leaders much longer, but elections are important, at least until that mushroom cloud rises over the mountains.

Here’s why voting is funny. You’ll get a kick out of this. When I vote for new leadership or more progressive ideas, the person/issue I’m voting for rarely wins. Why? Because I live in conservative Utah.

People tell me to just move to a different state. I don’t want to. At least not until I can afford a lighthouse on the East Coast where I can replace the light bulb with a bat signal.

So, for now, I’m here in Utah, voting for things that matter to me and to many other people, without a Popsicle’s chance in hell of it working out.

In fact, we started an election night drinking game. For every winner who isn’t a conservative white male, we take a shot of tequila. We’ve been sober for decades. Because here’s the truth: My vote rarely counts in Utah.

Oh, our esteemed leaders say my vote counts, but they know it’s a lie.

With their abstract-painting, gerrymandered districts they’ve effectively shut down my voice. I feel all I can do is

en’s rights, access to health care, gun control and education. That’s a difference I see between male and female roles: men want power, women want to lead.

After being mansplained to since birth, I understand my female brain can’t comprehend the problems involved with running the state. Like, how can our leaders make money if we don’t let them relocate a prison across the valley so they can develop prime property? How can the state generate revenue on alcohol without ridiculous licensing fees and policies? How can we possibly treat educators, minorities, or uteruses with respect, without creating laws to rein them in?

And then they have the gall to say, vote in the leaders you want. How? Tell me how and I’ll do it! Phew. I must be off my anti-hysterical meds.

If I learned anything from running for office in junior high, it’s that voters will follow the candy. But as a female voter in Utah, I’m tired of the sugary-sweet, syrupy condescension.
