ometimes life takes us places we didn’t plan. What we think we want isn’t exactly the right fit for us. And sometimes, others see our lot in life long before we recognize it.

Such is the journey for Jordan’s new track coach, Alyssa Dalton. Once convinced she would eventually turn her back on the sport she has loved as a child, Dalton is now trying to inspire young athletes to dream as big as she dared to dream.

“I didn’t want to be a teacher and there was little money in just being a coach,” Dalton said of her formative years.

“People always told me I should be a coach but I always said no way. But I had five different coaches from high school through college, and I learned so much from them that I wanted to pass it along to others.”

There was just one hurdle Dalton had to clear before she landed the job at Jordan: time. Dalton interviewed at Jordan knowing full well she couldn’t take the position at the time Jordan needed a new coach. She still had one more year to go at BYU. But Dalton was used to clearing 10 hurdles in her races, so one more wasn’t going to stop her.

“Early in the interview the principal asked me if I would even be able to take the job when they wanted me. I told her no, but that I planned on spending the rest of the interview convincing her that she should offer me the position the next year.”

Her convincing worked. he Sego Lily Gardens covers two-and-ahalf acres in the neighborhood east of the Sandy Library. Events like the Spring Garden Fair held on May 11 get the word out about this secret garden, which was designed to provide “inspiration and practical ideas” to create water-wise landscapes.

Dawn Barbee works for Sandy City Public Utilities and supervises the staff at Sego Lily Gardens. “We have to be conscientious about how much water we use inside and outside of our homes, but that doesn’t mean settling for unexciting landscaping without color,” said Barbee.

The Gardens opened for the 2019 season in April and will remain open until Sept. 28.

They are accessed at 1472 E. Sego Lily Drive (10200 South). “The gardens are free to visitors, and they are a resource for education in the community. We also offer opportunities for service groups to come and take care of the plants,” Barbee said.

Hannah Watts has worked as a gardener at Sego Lily for three seasons. “I do a lot of weeding and digging, everything I can to make it look beautiful. It’s a very peaceful, beautiful place and I love the biodiversity and the variety,” Watts said.

Watts explained their water-wise practices. “We have drip irrigation and landscape fabric under everything. The plants we have are mostly native and water wise. We demonstrate how to use mulch and rocks so that people know they can have more than just grass,” said Watts.

Watts said the garden is a bit of a secret.

“We have regular visitors, but there are a lot of people who don’t know about it. It’s not

very busy and that’s one of the reasons I love it, but we want people to come see it,” said Watts.

Watts said she loves the garden so much that she commutes there from Salt Lake to spend time in it. “I have to have a day here every week to feel connected. We’d love to have more volunteers. Volunteering helps give people a sense of ownership,” Watts said.

In addition to wandering the garden in your free time, there are also several organized events.

For local artists, the 2019 Plein Air Quick Draw Competition is June 8. Registration is required.

Continued from front page candidates, but it didn’t look like any would work. Then we interviewed Dalton. She didn’t have much experience but when we interviewed her we knew she was our coach. I told the principal she was the one I wanted to coach our track team. We just had to wait a year so she could finish school.”

So Watts teamed up with softball coach John Lundstrom to coach the 2018 track team in order to be able to give the job to Dalton when she finished at BYU. The type of attitude Jordan was looking for in a track coach was on display at the end of Dalton’s collegiate career. Dalton had earned a spot in the NCAA nationals, but at a huge cost. She tore her ACL in her right knee during qualifying, an injury that would knock out most runners let alone one jumping over hurdles. But she was determined to finish her career with a run at nationals. One motivating factor was that nationals was to be held at her former college, the University of Oregon.

“I was going to do whatever it took to at least start the race at nationals,” Dalton said.

“I wasn’t even sure if I could get over a hurdle but five days later I tried to jump a hurdle and was successful. I then focused on getting ready to clear all 10 hurdles.”

Using a brace to stabilize the knee, Dalton ran at nationals with the fully ruptured ACL and completed the race. It wasn’t the fastest finish ever, but it was an important,

groundbreaking finish.

“I just wanted to finish what I had started,” she said. “I had earned that. I had worked so hard and it had been a long journey for me through other injuries. I wanted to show people you can do hard things. It was kind of a miracle that I could clear 10 hurdles just 11 days after the tear.”

As Dalton grew older she realized speed was her friend. She grew to love the sprints more than the jogathons. Then, in ninth grade, her high school coach made a decision that completely changed Dalton’s life.

“He convinced me to switch from just running to competing in the heptathlon,” Dalton said. “The decision helped pave the

Dalton’s track career began at just 9 years old, when she lived in Fresno, California. Organized sports were part of the curriculum in elementary schools in California, beginning at the fourth grade level. Dalton was in third grade when a field trip kept the fourth graders from competing in a track meet.

“The third graders were asked to fill in and that’s when I found out how much I liked running,” Dalton said. “From early on I knew I was a runner. My sister and I would win all the jogathons.”

The heptathlon is a series of seven events over two days, combining field events with sprints, distance and hurdles races.

Dalton was soon tearing up the track in California. In 2011 she finished fifth in heptathlon scoring at a national high school meet in Eugene, Oregon.

Numerous scholarship offers came her way. Dalton chose to compete for the University of Oregon, but her collegiate career would have several bumps along the way.

A series of injuries extended a normal

collegiate career from four years to seven for Dalton. She eventually transferred to BYU from Oregon, and changed from a heptathlete to a hurdler, her best event.

Along the way Dalton was told many times she would make a great track coach.

“I was told all the time I would be a good coach,” Dalton said. “Most athletes can be like robots and just say yes or complain because they don’t want to do the hard stuff.

But I wanted to know why we did the things we did. I would ask so many questions, especially in high school, that my coach kept telling me I would coach someday.”

Dalton was exposed to the coaching aspect while at BYU. She was one of the athletes used as a coach during the summer track camps. That’s when the light went on for her and she knew she wanted to be a coach.

“Once I started coaching I knew I wanted to be around the kids more, and that’s when I realized I wanted to teach,” Dalton said. “Over the years I had changed my view completely about being a teacher.”

Dalton was asked about coaching at the collegiate level, but she knew that wasn’t for her.

“I like the high school age,” Dalton said. “It is the development age where my coach was able to prime for me a path to get to college. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be where I am at now. I hope to be that change and make a difference in others’ lives.” l

For the love of wild horses: a photographer’s story

reig Huggins doesn’t mind seeing dust.

When he journeys along the Pony Express Trail, out to Utah’s remote west desert, he scans the windswept, sepia-colored landscape for dust clouds. These reveal where the wild horses of the Onaqui herd are, kicking up the dry earth as they move and graze.

“It feels like I’m home,” Huggins said when he spots the herd. “There’s nothing I’d rather do than be there.” Out on the range, an estimated 450 horses of the Onaqui (pronounced O-nah-kee) herd roam the 321-square miles of public lands called the Herd Management Area (HMA), a two-hour drive southwest of Salt Lake City. They generally group in bands of 20 to 50.

For nine years now, the longtime Sandy resident has photographed the herd, giving him an upfront look at equine family life and drama.

“The photographs I like to take show the personality of the herd,” he said. “A more intimate photograph rather than just a still picture of a horse.”

Huggins’ in-depth portraits, ranging from fighting stallions to frolicking foals, are the result of intense dedication, studied predictability and love. He’s out with the herd several days each month, always in the afternoon to capture the best lighting, always wearing the same outfit, always driving the

same car and carrying the same equipment — one camera around his neck, the other camera with its 400mm lens on a tripod.

Being within earshot, he gently talks to the horses, just like they are family members, because to him, they are.

“For me, this is about the individual horses, seeing what happens in their lives,” he said.

Take for instance the life of Buck, a stallion Huggins has photographed for nine years. Buck always had four gray mares in his harem, but last spring Huggins witnessed Buck’s downfall in “one big, bloody, dusty fight” between Buck and other stallions. Two weeks later, Huggins returned to find the mares taken by other stallions. “I went back into my older photographs (to find out who the winning stallions were) and one of them was Buck’s grown son,” he said. “He’d taken over two of his dad’s mares.”

Now, without any females, Buck hangs out on the herd’s periphery with the Old Man, a stallion estimated to be 30 years old.

Every time he journeys west, Huggins looks for his favorite stallion, appropriately named the Ghost. This “magnificent, prancing, testosterone-fueled” creature visits the herd every few years taunting other stallions in front of the mares. Then he disappears into the desert. The Ghost has distinctive markings (noted by a DNA researcher) passed

down from the Spanish conquistadors’ horses — zebra-like stripes on the back of the legs and a dark stripe down the backbone.

Huggins’ favorite mare reminds him of Debbi, his wife of 48 years.

“Debbi is really a redhead, but she happens to be blonde now, so she’s a blonde redhead. My favorite mare is a blonde redhead.

Her mane is blonde, but her coat is red,” he said. “I guess I have a sweet spot for blondehaired redheads.”

Wildlife photography has been a longtime interest for Huggins, who started after he left the army in 1974, and has made his career in the medical imaging industry.

He’s explored many photography mediums from large format to black and white and now digital. Much of his work was shot in Yellowstone National Park before he sought opportunities closer to home. He estimated he’s taken more than 100,000 images of the Onaqui herd.

“I think I only went to Yellowstone once this winter,” he said. “Every free moment I have I go out in the west desert photographing this herd that I’ve fallen in love with.”

The Onaqui herd is the most photographed herd in the country, yet Huggins is surprised how many Utahns — photographers or not — don’t know about them. He hopes people see his portraits at www.utahwildhorses.com and take an interest in the

horses, because he says change is coming.

“I want the herd to have a voice,” he said. “I want people to know and care about these unique and remarkable horses so they have a seat at the table when the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) decides what to do with them.”

This year, the BLM plans to round up the herd, bringing numbers down to between 120 and 210 horses, according to their website. Huggins knows population control is necessary but he believes a safer solution can be reached, one that doesn’t injure horses, break up families and relegate them to living their lives confined to corrals. He’s hopeful that the wild horse conservation groups, Salt River Wild Horse Management Group and the American Wild Horse Campaign can work with the BLM to co-manage the herd with funding and trained volunteers locating and darting mares with PZP, a long-lasting contraceptive.

“In my mind wild horse herds are a national treasure. They symbolize our pioneer spirit, they symbolize all that is great about our country,” he said. “Wild horses represent the freedoms that the United States are known for, and it would be a national tragedy if we fail to maintain them for future generations.” l

Sandy’s legacy of historic houses

S

andy has grown a lot since its beginnings as a farming and mining town in the 1860s. The original neighborhood, Historic Sandy, occupies roughly the stretch of land from State Street to 700 East and 8500 South to 9000 South. Of the nearly 60 structures in Sandy listed on the National Register of Historic Places, most of them are in that area.

Sandy’s growth meant the loss of some of its historic structures (shed a tear for the old Jordan High School). “Sandy’s rules are not as strict as Salt Lake’s, which oversees the Avenues and Harvard Yale area. Buildings of historic value do get demolished,” said Mike Wilcox, Sandy’s zoning administrator.

Wilcox works with the Sandy Historic Preservation Committee, which gets a say in demolitions, rebuilds and add-ons. The committee includes City Councilmember Brooke Christensen.

“There is a delay provision in our code that if someone files for a demolition permit on a historic building, we work with them to see if we can preserve it. If we can’t, we at least try to document or relocate it,” said Wilcox.

In the 1990s, many Sandy structures were placed on the national and state registers of historic places. In 2007, the entire historic district of Sandy was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

“To be considered historic, a building must be over 50 years old and have some kind of unique architectural character worth preserving,” Wilcox said. “Once listed, there are grants and federal and state tax credits for structures on the register. These incentives are meant to offset the costs of maintaining an older home.”

Despite the number of buildings on the register, preservationists like architect David Amott of Preservation Utah haven’t had much experience working on Sandy homes.

“There isn’t as much of an investment in that neighborhood as, say, the Avenues or Capitol Hill,” said Amott.

The neighborhood will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who call it home, like Scott Cowdell. “My grandfather built a family home in 1922 near Main Street Park. My daughter lives in it now. My father and uncle were contractors on the Sandy Elementary project, and when they tore down the old one, they used a lot of the materials for the garage,” Cowdell said.

“It’s a nice neighborhood. The streets are still quiet. People still know each other.

They walk down the street, they say hi to each other,” Cowdell said.

Keith Callister grew up in Historic Sandy and said he sees value in a home that tells a story. “I lived for six years in a house on Main Street, just down from Sandy Elementary. It was a Victorian with a dirt cellar, wrap-around porch, front porch swing. I

loved that house,” Callister said.

Callister, a real estate broker, has clients who are interested in historic homes. But he said money is a big consideration. “You know when you buy it there are going to be major costs. You’ll probably have to replace knob and tube wiring and poor insulation, and most people aren’t up for that,” said Callister.

Not every house in Historic Sandy is a gem, but a walk along roads like Main Street, Pioneer Street, Center Street and 8800 South gives one a glimpse into its heyday.

For Amott, the stories behind the older structures are what he said keeps him coming back for more. “The great thing about old buildings is their features. You start, for example, with a mysterious metal object on a Victorian door (see photo spread). Before you know it, you are researching the use of calling cards in rural 19th-century Utah.

Giving fathers a head start West Valley City resident Frank Bedolla said he has coached more than 600 low-income Utah dads on how to be the best fathers possible, by un-learning behaviors and attitudes.

Through his nonprofit Fathers and Families Coalition of Utah, Bedolla offers the Nurturing Fathers Program, a 13-week, evidence-based training course designed to teach men parenting and nurturing skills.

Fathers and Families Coalition starts the work of growing great future dads for young men, as well. Bedolla’s “Wise Guys” course, currently being taught at Murray High School and downtown’s Horizonte School, “teaches young boys how to be men, how to treat women.”

Bedolla said that previous generations of parents misunderstood “quality time,” to the detriment of their children and families.

“They thought quality time was being present, but it is also being interactive.”

His advice to Utah fathers, for Father’s Day 2019? “The best thing you can do is invest in your child. Be the best father you can be. Be there.”

(Workers Compensation Fund) has reached out to Utah’s growing Hispanic and Spanish-speaking audience. As can be imagined, many of those folks are dads. WCF wants to remind dads to be careful on the job, and do it through the gentle and most powerful tug of all—through the heartstrings of their children.

The Padre d’el Año—Father of the Year—competition gives Utah children a way to nominate their fathers to earn the special honor and to be gifted with prizes WCF touts as being $500 in value. Children in three age groups—ages 7-11, 12-15, and 1517 nominate their papas for the prizes.

Three fathers each season are honored,

receiving cash and one-of-a-kind gifts. This year’s Padre d’el Año and two runners-up will be honored at the June 29 Real Salt Lake game later this month.

Safety first at family skate night

onday, May 13, was the first family night at Lone Peak Skate Park. During the summer, the skate park is closed to the public one Monday evening a month and opened up to families.

“We wanted to provide the littler kids time to skate with their families,” said Dustin Jackson, recreation program coordinator for Sandy City. “This event has been going for about 15 years now.”

During this first family night event, Sandy Parks and Recreation partnered with Healthy Sandy for a helmet giveaway to the first 25 people in line. In addition, helmets were also provided at a lower cost so everyone could have access to one.

“We’re all about safety in the department,” Jackson continued. “We want to give people an opportunity to buy a good quality helmet for cheap. Each month, a different Sandy City department comes to the event to interact with the children and teach them about their department. At the May 13 event, the fire department rolled up in their shiny red truck, opening the doors so the kids could see.

“These are fun nights — it’s a really relaxed environment that we get to have fun and hang out with the kids,” said Lenore Corey, a fire and life safety specialist at Sandy Fire Department. “Helmets are just such a simple thing, it doesn’t take very long to put it on, it doesn’t take very long to fit it — that’s another reason at this first event they always provide the helmets. We want them to be protected at the event. We use opportunities like this when they’re actually doing the event to try to explain it to them.”

Bikes, scooters, rollerblades and skateboards zoomed across the park as laughter and squeals of delight filled the air.

Fantasy fiction novel by local teen hits the big bookshelves

K

en Mears of Midvale was not born a natural writer. He struggled to want to write anything as a pre-teen. But he worked hard at something he didn’t originally like. Ken practiced, and kept going. His ideas grew and eventually turned into some interesting characters and a substantial storyline. At 15 years old, Ken went so far as getting his book published. “Stones of the Middle Lands: The Castaway Hero” is now available in paperback or e-book through Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.

Ken will be turning 16 around the time this news circulates to mailboxes. Many might agree that’s a big accomplishment to make even before getting a driver’s licence.

His book is planned as a series. “The Castaway Hero” is book one. A continuation of the fantasy tale is in the works.

Deanna Mears, his mother, describes Ken when he was younger (around 9 years old). “He hated writing. I would ask him to write a two or three sentence paragraph, and there were tears, crying and arguing,” she recalled. Deanna saw that situation as a call to action with her son. “I came across a curriculum called ‘Brave Writer,’ which is a very gentle approach to writing. Part of that was a project where he had to create his own continent or island chain; and that’s where the Middle Lands was born.”

Ken held a book launch gathering at the Chocolate dessert shop in West Jordan (9120 South Redwood Road) on April 26. Visitors came to eat delectable treats and hear the young author read a chapter. Bookworms of all ages came to pick up a copy and enjoy a sample of what’s beyond the cover.

The novel has a simple yet dramatic cover, showing a boy collapsed over the bow of a washed-up wooden boat, where rocky land finally meets sea. The illustrations done

by Ryan Kessler and Stephen Kenny could easily draw a reader in to find out who the weary ocean voyager might be.

An additional book signing was held at the Printed Garden bookstore (9445 South Union Square) in Sandy on May 2. Ken put in some serious focus and dedicated stick-toit-ness to see his story get to print.

Ken explained how his method was put to action. “When I wrote the original draft it was a long and laborious process, because I was flying by the seat of my pants. I didn’t completely love writing as much as I do now.” His mom would sit down with him and they’d talk about what was going on in the story, and brainstorm over what things could or needed to happen. “I ended up doing two chapters a week over the course of half the school year,” he said.

His parents, Spencer and Deanna Mears, encouraged him and guided him through the frustration when writing seemed like an impossible chore. They supported Ken’s efforts by using that creative module, and eventually found a publisher.

Kenny B. Smith is owner-operator of Teapots Away Media. She does all the acquisitions editing for Teapots Away Press, a nonprofit based in Utah, which essentially works with authors who would not necessarily get picked up by a traditional publisher. She helps authors publish their books and learn how to self-publish.

Mears’s story. “Ken’s book is a middle grade novel. It’s (meant for) right around the ages of 9–14. But we’re finding that a lot of adults like the simplicity of his action and straightforward style. It’s an excellent read to do with your kids at night because the chapters aren’t super long. If you do a 10-minute read with your kids, it’s the perfect length,” Smith said. “It’s an engaging story, and a lot of fun.”

ing-of-age birthday or planning a sweet 16 bucket list, “publish a book” could actually be an item to check off. Before Facebook invites, pizza, tunes, some totally yum cake and, well, whatever else teenagers do nowadays, a novel hitting the bookstore shelves could actually happen too. The point is, teens can accomplish some pretty incredible things. l

Canyons board announces proposed teacher salary increase

A

s the Canyons School District Teacher of the Year celebration drew to a close, Canyons Board of Education President Nancy Tingey read a statement that brought the auditorium of educators to their feet erupting in applause.

Tingey’s statement on April 23 addressed a tentative agreement with the Canyons Education Association proposing that all Canyons teachers would receive a $7,665 per year salary increase.

“This would put the starting teacher annual pay at $50,000 — elevating the teaching profession by bringing salaries in line with those of other professionals in Utah, and making it possible for teachers to pursue their passion and do what they’re good at while also earning a living wage,” she said.

The $50,000 starting teacher salary would be the highest school district pay in the state.

However, she also said this would be made possible with a property tax increase, which will be presented for approval at a required Truth-in-Taxation hearing in August.

“All of the funds from the proposed property tax increase would go exclusively to teacher salaries. We see this investment as a positive step toward inspiring college students to regard teaching as a viable career and reinforce the belief that teaching is a destination profession,” she said.

Utah’s Truth-in-Taxation law shifts the base for taxation from a fixed rate to a fixed revenue amount, with a sliding scale for population growth or to reflect property value.

It also requires local government entities to notify the public and hold hearings with intended raising of taxes to allow transparency to decision-making about taxes.

While she said more information will be available forthwith, Tingey and other board members were decisively quiet following the announcement.

“I believe we’ll just let the statement stand,” she said.

However, teachers were elated following the announcement.

East Sandy Elementary teacher and former Teacher of the Year runner-up Stephanie Cobabe supported the statement.

“Just prior to the awards/recognitions, all of the teachers in the room were asked to stand and declare, ‘I am a teacher,’” she said.

“We were thanked for the work we do to help inspire, guide, and change the future for children. With this announcement, I’m certain many of us feel supported and encouraged to continue to make a difference the way we do.

However, he did acknowledge that it could be hard on some community members, such as seniors who live on a fixed income.

“They can file an appeal — a circuit breaker — with the Utah State Tax Commission so their taxes don’t go up,” he said.

There also are exemptions such as veterans with disabilities, legally blind property owners, active or reserved duty armed forces and others. (For more information, see https://tax.utah.gov/forms/pubs/pub-36.pdf) Briscoe said there will be opportunities for community discussion about the proposal. On June 18, there will be a budget hearing and in July, discussion on the tax bill. There will be a date in August announced on the

roads, but our teachers aren’t paid as well.

It’s exciting that our board is wanting to give teachers more money,” he said.

Draper Park Middle School eighth grade teacher Jared Collette said this will step up the quality of teachers in Canyons District.

“With the big demand for teachers, we’ll be offering teachers a salary they deserve and filling those with great professionals who will deliver students a high-quality education,” he said.

Eastmont Middle School seventh- grade teacher Cody West supported the board’s proposal.

“When I choose to work for this district, I asked family and friends about Canyons,”

If teachers aren’t taken care of, how can students prosper? This is a step in the right direction.”

Draper Principal Christy Waddell was pumped up about the possible increase.

“I’m so excited about it,” she said. “It’s so needed. It’s impressive how Canyons District is at the forefront of it.” l

n a Feb. 1 Facebook Live video, Mayor Kurt Bradburn accused the former city council and administration of being beholden to developers. Now current and former Sandy City Council members are asking for an apology.

Bradburn’s comment came in response to a question about whether or not his position about a proposed development was influenced by a $10,000 campaign contribution he received last year from the developer in question, John Thackeray, owner of the Thackeray company.

“The previous administration would have (felt beholden to developers). And the city council,” said Bradburn. “That’s what happened. You made a contribution to the previous administration and then the developer got whatever they wanted… The planning commission and city council would rubber-stamp it.”

Chris McCandless, a city councilor since 2005, sent a letter to the mayor asking him to recant his Facebook video comments.

“Mayor Bradburn denied that request,” said McCandless during the May 14 city council meeting.

McCandless went on to defend his record as he listed a number of projects mentioned by Bradburn in his Facebook video, declaring that he did not receive any campaign contributions from any of the companies associated with their development.

“I have never rubber-stamped any application and personally take great offense at the inference that I could be bought with a campaign contribution,” he said.

Steve Smith, a former city council member, shared similar feelings during citizen comments.

“As one who was part of the prior council, I take great offense at the insinuation that I was bought and paid for. Nothing could be further from the truth,” said Smith.

Both McCandless and Smith accused Bradburn of doing the very thing he accused the former city council of doing.

“I have never rubber-stamped any application and personally take great offense at the inference that I could be bought with a campaign contribution” – Chris McCandless Smith said the mayor has taken campaign contributions from the very same people. “Own up to the fact that by taking those contributions, you are also a rubber stamp,” he said.

In his 2018 campaign contribution filing, Bradburn reported receiving $49,100. Eighty percent of that amount came from companies or individuals involved in real estate development or construction.

“The mayor accused the past city council in a statement of false facts and doing something he just did. He met with a developer, accepted a huge contribution, and then endorsed the developer’s project. It’s a little disingenuous,” said McCandless.

The “endorsement” refers to the same Facebook Live video in which Bradburn speaks positively about the Thackeray Company’s proposal to build a housing development on the site of the old Ream’s grocery store at 10600 South 700 East.

“This barely qualifies as a high-density development. This is 10.3 units per acre. I think this is a workable development here,” said Bradburn in the video.

Bradburn did note that he wasn’t making an official recommendation to the rest of the city government.

“We are not giving a favorable recommendation for this project to the planning commission. We’re simply presenting the facts and letting the planning commission and city council vote how they feel best,” he said.

When asked in a Facebook comment about Thackeray’s $10,000 donation to his re-election campaign by a Sandy resident, Bradburn said the question was disingenuous and said the person asking the question was not a “supporter” of his campaign.

“He worked very hard to make sure I didn’t get elected,” said Bradburn.

After McCandless’ call for a retraction or apology during the May 14 city council meeting, the council chair Kris Nicholl asked Bradburn if he would like to comment and he declined.

Dear Sandy Resident, June is here and that means that budget season is upon us! In April, I presented the Mayor’s proposed budget to City Council.

The City Council must approve the budget by June 30th and hold public hearings to solicit public feedback during council meetings prior to that date.

The $117-million proposed budget projects about $3.2 million of new revenues in our General Fund. You will find in the FY 2019-2020 proposed budget that we have allocated those tax dollars towards increasing our level of service to the residents, maintaining the quality of life we have become accustomed to, and ensuring that taxpayers are protected in the event of a downturn. There is a never-ending list of needs that the city has, but we have worked hard to prioritize your tax dollars towards things that have a direct impact on your daily lives.

The 2019-2020 proposed budget contains many appropriations toward improving our residents’ quality of life. Parks, trails, community events, air quality, and public safety all contribute in some way to enjoying our community and being proud of the city in which we live. The FY 20192020 proposed budget also contains several appropriations to make doing business with the city faster and easier and ensure we employ the most qualified individuals to carry out those duties.

In government, the products we provide are services so we must constantly be striving to improve our level of service to residents like you.

The city budget should reflect the priorities of its citizens. If you would like to advocate for the inclusion of other priorities, please attend council meetings on Tuesday night and let us know where you think the budget should be improved. Public Works – A Dozen Quick Tips: TREE TRIMMING: For the safety of pedestrians and motorists, if the trees or vegetation at your house have branches that hang over the sidewalk or street, they need to be trimmed to a height of 14 ft. above the curb and 8 ft. above the sidewalk.

DUMPSTERS: If you have a large project at your home and you need to dispose of materials, reserve a dumpster on the Public Works webpage and you can have it delivered to your home for up to 72 hours.

POTHOLES: If you see a problem on the roadway such as a pothole or road debris, please contact Public Works at 801-568-2999 or use your CityServe app so we can quickly resolve the issue.

REPLACEMENT CANS: If either your waste or recycling container is damaged or has a broken wheel, it can be repaired or replaced free of charge. Contact Public Works at 801-568-2999 to report the problem.

I Am Sandy – Mike Veenendaal Mike Veenendaal and his wife, Marilyn, moved to Historic Sandy in 1970 and have been Sandy residents ever since. They raised their three daughters and one son here in Sandy, who all graduated from Jordan High School. When they first moved to Sandy, it was only one square mile, so the Veenendaal family has seen a lot of change and growth since.

While living in Historic Sandy, Mike would hear the siren go off notifying the volunteer firefighters to report to the first fire station located at 8744 S Center Street (150 E), which is now the current Sandy Museum location. Although he had a good job for Zions Bank in Computer Operations, he was intrigued by the opportunity to volunteer for the Fire Department. He started volunteering in 1974, became a full-time firefighter in 1976 and moved up the ladder through the ranks as an Engineer, Captain, and Battalion Chief of Operations over a 33-year period until he retired in 2006.

Special Events Permitting Sandy City is committed to supporting quality events. In order to ensure a safe and quality event for the applicant and participants, as well as citizens who may live and/or work in the surrounding areas, a Special Event Permit is required for any function: • Whether it be on public or private property • Where it may require additional parking • When it creates unusual noise • If it is on the city streets or right-of-way (this includes but is not limited to: block parties, concerts, 5K’s, cycling, filming, weddings etc.)

Whether the event will have 30 participants or 3000, the event permitting process is necessary to ensure the safety and enjoyment for everyone.

Mike helped create many of the initial Fire Department programs and concepts, some of which are still used today. He helped with the transport engine program, which was utilized in Sandy for over 20 years. With the help of Alta View Hospital, they created the Hug-a-Bear Program, which provided children with a stuffed bear when Sandy Fire responded to an incident where a child was involved and the program continues today. He was part of the ambulance program, that helped them purchase the first ambulance in Sandy. Also, Mike helped establish the Critical Incident Debriefing Team, which is also still in effect today to assist first responders debrief after a critical incident. Mike’s motto was that an idea or concept may not be effective today, but it may be effective tomorrow. He was a forward thinker and enjoyed a challenge of trying something new. After retiring from Sandy Fire, Mike worked for Valley Emergency Communications Center (VECC) for 8 years.

Through the years, Mike has been involved in numerous community and volunteer programs. Not only has he been involved in his church, especially with the scouting program for over 45 years, he has also been a member of organizations, such as The Exchange Club and Sandy Pride for over a decade. Most recently, his passion has been animal rescue. For several years, he has volunteered at the Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, as well as the Community Animal Welfare Society (CAWS), which is a foster-based rescue organization for cats and dogs.

With the little free-time that he has, he is also the President of his HOA, as well as a lifetime member of the Utah State Firefighters Association.

Mike continues to make a difference in people’s lives and the Sandy community. He says with all that he has been involved within the community and with Sandy City Fire Department, it has always been a team effort and that he could not have done it alone, but there is no doubt that he has made a difference.

Literacy night magical for Silver Mesa witches, wizards

U

sing the Marauder’s Map, young witches and wizards successfully learned about muggle studies, ancient runes, care of magical creatures, divination, defense against the dark arts, potions and other subjects as they made their way to Ollivanders, where they created their magical wands at Silver Mesa School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

As nearly 1,000 people — students and their families, many in their robes — came to the third annual Harry Potter-themed literacy night, they were able to create magical opportunities through activities tied to literacy, said PTA organizer Mary Ann Curtis.

“It gets bigger and bigger every year,” she said. “There are month long activities that cumulates with this night.”

For the month of March, students “kept engaged, and were excited, when they were reading their minutes and doing literacy activities to earn hundreds of points for their houses,” Curtis said, adding that students were separated into four houses, similar to the Harry Potter book series.

Fifth-grade teacher Amy Sandgren agreed that literacy month motivated students to read.

“Students double to quadruple the amount of time they read each night,” she said.

several activities, such as writing a note and sending it with a stuffed owl to the principal to writing their own play.

“We love to inspire and build the excitement for our students to read,” Curtis said.

“It’s a time of the year when we want kids to reengage and read more and hope it will

extend into the summer.”

Tying into the theme, the school held its annual Quidditch tournament — this year, extending the contest for two weeks.

More than 75 volunteers, including teens who had attended the event previously or heard about it and wanted to pitch in, helped at the March 19 literacy night. Several other organizations and people contributed to making the event successful, including Salt Lake Community College’s Community Writing Center, which held workshops on writing fiction, poetry and scripts; Nelson Labs, running the potions workshop; local artist Vaughn Emett, who taught participants about magical spells and created bookmarks with them; Scales and Tales, who brought with them magical creatures for the students to learn about; and a student band from Hillcrest High, teaching students about musical literacy.

“We had a lot of people from neighborhoods who came here and don’t have children who attend the school, because it is a community event and a chance for them to explore the magic that comes from reading,” Curtis said.

The Thackeray family came, where 6-year-old Ruby made a potion necklace and a wand.

“It’s even more amazing than previous years,” her mother, Ali, said. “It’s a great opportunity to see friends, listen to music, discover some creative ways to engage kids in reading. I really like this year’s moving pictures.”

The moving pictures were a new addition to the night’s activities. With the use of an iPad, loaded with an app that ed tech specialist Katie Schmoldt discovered, students could aim the device at photos of teachers holding their favorite books and listen to them talk about why they like to read and

Students also could try out the new green room, a chance to tell their own tales or reenact one of Harry Potter’s in front of a camera, which was coordinated by accommodated core teacher Lisa Hayes, Curtis said.

“People really liked the addition of technology and bringing in more literacy activities — that still tied to the Harry Potter theme,” she said.

However, some witches and wizards still dashed to make their wands first.

Fifth grader Cate Lee was one of them.

“Last year, they ran out of wands so I went there early,” Cate said. “I can duel with the wand and cast spells with it. I also went to a fortune teller and learned that I have a personality that doesn’t take risks, but I do listen to directions.”

Classmate Aida Simon was with her.

“I love this event. It’s a tradition here and there is a lot of fun activities tied to the Harry Potter series,” she said.

Aida’s sister, third grader Leah, said her favorite station was potions.

“I wrote a secret message in snake language and rolled it up in a bottle and put in my necklace,” she said.

Throughout the night, students also could get their photos with some of the Harry Potter characters such as Dumbledore or Hagrid, try a butterbeer at Honeyduke’s or go on a scavenger hunt, which is what third grader Claire Fauver did.

“On the scavenger hunt, I learned some cool spells and saw sparkles go up,” she said.

Principal Julie Fielding said the entire month and event are motivating.

“The students get super excited and want to do more reading and more activities related to literacy,” she said. “Each year, it continues to grow. This is a well-loved tradition.” l

10 takeaways from the Sandy Stadium Village Master Plan draft

I

n the 10 years since Rio Tinto Stadium first opened, the area surrounding the home of Real Salt Lake hasn’t changed much. But that’s about to change as the Stadium Village section of the city’s Cairns Master Plan takes shape.

Last year, Sandy City contracted Gateway Planning, an urban development consulting firm, to come up with a master plan for the Stadium Village area, the bulk of which is contained between 9000 South to 9400 South and from I-15 to State Street. On Tuesday, May 7, the plan was presented to both the Sandy City Council and the general public. Here are 10 takeaways from the proposal.

1. A master plan is just a plan A master plan is just a template for what the city would like to see happen in a given area. So just because the master plan includes a hotel in the spot where a certain building currently sits, it doesn’t mean that building is doomed.

“We’re not suggesting that anyone has to give up their property or business. If you own property somewhere and see something else on top, we’re not saying that has to happen,” said Scott Polikov, a member of the Gateway Planning team, during a town hall meeting last year.

“My perspective of this project is to provide the big picture that can guide decisions,” added Jake Warner, a project manager for the city’s community development department.

“The fine grain of what actually gets built is going to depend largely on the market and the timing of the property owner.”

High school students learn about careers in the digital world

erriman High student Patrick Brown may opt for a career in information technology.

The high school senior attended the recent DigiForge information technology career fair where he attended three sessions: database, game design and cybersecurity.

“It was really fun to learn about cryptology and script,” he said, adding that he already knows C#, C++ and JavaScript. “It can all help to have a good understanding as a base for a career.”

The fair was sponsored by the Wasatch Front South Region Consortium, where about 250 students selected from 14 industry presenters who spoke on topics from data science to game development. They also could tour Salt Lake Community College’s Center for Arts and Media as the presentations were held at the college’s South City campus.

“Our conference goals are to inspire and excite students about technology careers, show possible career paths, and offer creative learning opportunities,” said Patti Larkin, Canyons School District careers and technical education coordinator.

Students from Jordan, Canyons, Murray, Tooele, Salt Lake and Granite school districts came to learn about their technology career options.

Corner Canyon High School junior Jack Eckersley is interested in pursuing a career in animation and game design, but he also attended the session “Databases: The Most Delicious Secret in Information Technology,” where he learned from Control4’s Andrea Allred about how some companies, such as

Target, customize letters to their customers based on what coupons they use.

Allred said data also has been used to identify where malaria is reported in Zimbabwe, and then teams are sent to try to eliminate any standing water to combat the disease.

“Data is used in so many different places and ways, but databases are needed to be kept secure, with a strong password, firewalls and encrypted information,” she said. “With more and more data being collected, we need more database analysts and administrators.

There’s a lot of opportunities to get involved and available resources.”

In another session, Murray High sophomore Lincoln Pham learned about 3D graffiti from SpyHop’s Chris Manfre.

Manfre demonstrated how to use layers, saturation, clipping, levels and blending in Adobe Photoshop to achieve their own artwork.

He also said he changed from a career as an audio engineer for death metal bands to studying graphic design so he could make album covers for bands.

“Find out what you like to do and go for it,” he said.

Pham said he already has an idea of the career he’d like to pursue — cybersecurity.

“It’s basically hacking, but with permission,” he said, adding that he also attended sessions in cybersecurity and computer myths. “I’d be deciphering codes, which aren’t hard, but fun to do. I’m planning to take computer science classes, but this gave me a head start.”

Pat Wright, who chairs the event, said part of the reason to interest high school students in technology information careers is to fill positions.

“There’s not enough people in the jobs now and by 2020, we expect it to grow to 2 million people,” he said, adding that there are about 300,000 people in the field now.

“There’s a lot of technology out there that is growing and not enough Utahns to fill the demand.”

He recommended students as young as elementary age start learning more about computer programming as more careers will incorporate it in the future. He said by middle school, students should learn computer

science, and in high school, programming should be required.

While he applauded districts where students learn code.org in elementary, he also recommended students learn more coding, such as at the free Utah Code Camp on June 8, which teaches students from age 5 to 15 skills from Arduino and Scratch to Unity and HTML (www.utahgeekevents.com/events/ kids-code-camp-2019).

“It’s becoming a digital world from artists to virtual reality to gaming to understanding data,” Wright said. “We need our kids to be prepared and get excited about their future.” l

Meals will be served 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. for breakfast and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for lunch from Tuesday, June 11 through Friday, Aug. 2 at Sandy Elementary as well as at the four Midvale elementary schools — Copperview, East Midvale, Midvale and Midvalley.

Meals also will be served at Jordan High Tuesday, June 11 through Friday, Aug. 2, with breakfast being served from 7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m. and lunch being served from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Beginning Tuesday, June 25 and ending Wednesday, July 31, Hillcrest High will serve breakfast from 7:30 to 8 a.m. and lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m.

Adults may purchase meals at these sites for the price of $2 for breakfast and $3.50 for lunch.

Motorists take note: lane filtering law comes to Utah

ext time you sit in traffic on State Street and watch a motorcyclist travel down the middle of two lanes of stopped vehicles, don’t fly into road rage. This practice, known as lane filtering, is now legal. The goal is to prevent rear-end collisions between motorcyclists and approaching cars.

Utah Highway Patrol has done a thorough job of explaining House Bill 149, a new motorcycle lane filtering law (legal since May 14, 2019), effective throughout the state. A link on the UHP Facebook page explains the law in detail and shows an example of doing it the lawful way.

Sergeant Jason Nielsen of the Sandy Police Department encouraged drivers to have motorcycle awareness. “There’s going to be a learning curve. This is something brand new to the state of Utah. Other states have similar things, but this is new to us, so hopefully that learning curve won’t cause any injuries,” Nielsen said.

All commuters should be aware of the law and have an extra eye out for motorcyclists. That way, traffic will be a safer group effort. How exactly should it be done?

Whether people agree with it or not, it’s the law. They’re (motorcyclists) allowed to do it,” Nielsen said.

He gave examples of roads where lane filtering would/wouldn’t be permitted. “If it’s on Bangerter Highway, then no.” The speed limit is over 45 there. “But State Street is OK.” The higher speed freeways are illegal places. “The majority of roadways in Salt Lake Valley though, this law falls under,” he said.

If one is motivated to take a motorcycle licensing class, Utah is ready to educate at driver’s ed training facilities for that, too.

“There are correct ways to get introduced to the sport, mainly the Utah Rider Education

Seeing motorcycles pass everyone else can feel unfair. That’s not the intent. When done correctly, the lane filtering law has a purpose and a function, meant to protect.

Two-sport Jordan athlete receives appointment to Naval Academy

By Ron Bevan | r.bevan@mycityjournals.com Once a candidate is cleared physically, their school work and community work are checked. Teachers are interviewed and grades are checked constantly to make sure they remain high.

“The two big things to get in is your leadership, or what you have done in your life in that way, and grades,” Johnson said. “Then you have to get a congressional application.

I was nominated by both Sen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. John Curtis. Even with all that only about 6% that get congressional nominations make it to Annapolis.”

Johnson became interested in joining the Naval Academy because of his love for flying.

“I love airplanes. I have my entire life,” Johnson said. “When I was young the second I saw an airplane I knew that’s what I wanted to do. When looking into how to get into flying, the Navy seemed the right way. They fly the F-18 Advanced Super Hornet, which is my favorite jet. That is the jet flown by the Blue Angels. I have always been fascinated with the Blue Angels and what they do.”

It was Johnson’s sophomore year that he learned about getting into the academy and not just the Navy. To him, striving to get into the academy seemed like the best path possible.

“He has been an important part of everything at Jordan,” Watts said. “To see him get this opportunity to go to the Naval Academy I think ranks right up there with others that have been recognized at the national level.”

“It is quite difficult to get in the academy,” Johnson said. “You start your junior year with a preliminary application, which has to include your grade point average and school activities. They can say yes or no right then and if it is no then you are out.”

Once Johnson was past that the actual application began. A physical test must be passed and a screening by a doctor is given.

“They need to know your body can handle everything that is thrown at you,” Johnson said. “They need to know that you are the right size and height.”

lifelong obsession with planes has led a two-sport Jordan athlete to a prestigious appointment to the United States Naval Academy.

Tommy Johnson, the son of Randy and Shauna Johnson of Sandy, will join the latest class at that Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland this summer.

“I report to the academy in Annapolis on June 27 at 7 a.m.,” Johnson said. “This is something I have been wanting for a long time. I get to serve my country, learn how to fly and get an education all at the same time.”

Johnson, a senior at Jordan, wore the school colors competing as both a football player and on the track team. In fact, it was while competing that he found out he was going to the academy.

“I found out I was going when I was at a track meet,” Johnson said. “I had a brief break from competition. I looked at my phone and saw the email.”

The first person Johnson thought of when he heard was his father. He had to pass on the great news. Trouble was, his phone was almost out of battery.

“I had to borrow a phone to call my dad,” Johnson said. “It was important to me that he knew as soon as I did. So we celebrated through a phone call.”

Johnson ran the distance races for Jordan’s track team. He also played on the offensive and defensive lines for the football team. At 6’3” and 215 pounds, Johnson was a natural to be a lineman on a high school football team. But his build almost goes against all that is pictured in a distance runner.

“You look at him and wonder why he wants to run distance because he is so big physically,” Jordan track coach Alyssa Dalton said. “I looked at him and said, ‘You are going to sprint for me, right?’ He is built like a sprinter, but he runs the distances so effortlessly.”

“The thing I love about Tommy is he is exactly what we want in a student athlete in a high school,” Jordan athletic director Brandon Watts said. “He is not the star, but he is dedicated, works hard and has a good time.

He doesn’t get hung up on the individual attention some other players do. Tommy just wants to be a part of it and do his very best.”

Johnson didn’t get much time this year to run track, however. He was too busy doing many other extra-curricular activities. And carried a rather large class load.

“I do a lot of things at the school,” Johnson said. “I’m an active person. I like to stay busy and help others out.”

To that end Johnson didn’t just compete in athletics, but sang in two choirs, served on the student council and worked in a group that helps freshmen assimilate to the high school life.

All of this helped in getting Johnson into the Naval Academy, as they look for leader-

Canyons teachers celebrate two surprises: Teacher of the Year, proposed salary hike

T

here was not one, but two standing ovations April 23 when Canyons School District officials named the Teacher of the Year and a possible teacher pay increase.

After 47 teachers from Canyons District schools and programs were recognized, Midvale Elementary’s Jessica Beus was announced the district Teacher of the Year.

The other two finalists were Anna Alger from Eastmont Middle and theater teacher Josh Long from Hillcrest High. Each of these three teachers received $500, with Beus as the top teacher, receiving an additional $500.

Every school teacher received a crystal award plus a Real Salt Lake jersey with their name silkscreened on it that they can wear to the Canyons School District-RSL night May 24, where they will be recognized on the field.

But afterward, teachers got another treat.

Canyons Board of Education President Nancy Tingey read a statement addressing a tentative agreement with the Canyons Education Association proposing that this fall all Canyons teachers would receive a $7,665 per year salary increase.

“This would put the starting teacher annual pay at $50,000 — elevating the teaching profession by bringing salaries in line with those of other professionals in Utah, and making it possible for teachers to pursue their passion and do what they’re good at while also earning a living wage,” Tingey said.

This would be made possible with a property tax increase, which will be presented for approval at a required Truth-in-Taxation hearing in August, she added. (See Canyons Board announces proposed teacher salary increase.)

For Beus, it was an unbelievable evening.

“I had let my mom know that I was in the final eight, but when they announced my name, she was emotional for both of us,” Beus said. “She was just bawling. I was more shocked, surprised — and very honored.

It was fun to see the support of my school there.”

The support was a crowd of teachers and her principal all holding up cut-outs of Beus’ face and cheering her on.

“Nobody deserves this more than Jessica,” said Midvale Elementary Principal Chip Watts, who acknowledged that Beus can reach even the toughest students at the Title I school. “She’s incredibly hardworking and is a teacher willing to do whatever it takes for her students. She always puts them first and is a critical part of our incredible turnaround progress we’re making here at Midvale.”

However, Beus quickly shares the credit.

where we’re going with Midvale, but it comes from the support we have of each other. We are a team, we all dive in and do what is best for our students,” she said.

Her role at Midvale is to team-teach third grade, focusing on math and science.

“I have a natural curiosity about the world and am bursting with observations in science. I encourage them to become more independent thinkers,” she said.

Beus began her focus on becoming an elementary teacher after taking a year off to teach English in China. She graduated with a bachelor’s in elementary education and a minor in English language development from Brigham Young University, then began her teaching career in Alpine School District.

She now has taught five years, her third year with Canyons District.

Beus also had inspiring role models,

starting with her mom, Anne Beus, who taught music and Spanish in Granite School District and currently is teaching orchestra at Park Lane Elementary.

“My mom inspired me with her dedication to kids. She believed and helped them succeed,” the Canyons School District Teacher of the Year said.

Beus also credits her former third-grade Silver Mesa teacher, Kay Cook, who made “learning so fun and totally put everything into it.” She also interned for Westmore Elementary (Orem) teacher Aleesha Ottley, from whom she learned patience in working with students.

“She is able to connect with students in tough situations and has a demeanor where ‘everything is going to be fine.’ I’ve tried to emulate that and take the best from her, my mom and Mr. Cook as I teach,” she said.

However, she has her own talent, as was shared at the ceremony, when she also was referred to as the “child whisperer.”

“That started with the principal saying that. He said I’m able to reach students, connect with them and help them make progress,” Beus said. “I speak to them as adults, on the same level, with love and respect, and empower them. I want them to realize, they are the boss of themselves and they are capable of success.”

At the ceremony, middle school runner-up, Alger, was commended for her classroom that is known for its positive climate and culture, for her use of a variety of methods to check student understanding and how she masterfully provides specific feedback to her students.

The high school runner-up, Long, was highlighted for his ability to bring the team of choir, band, orchestra, stage crew and theater students together to realize an award-winning program.

“Josh welcomes everyone who wants to participate in theater, drawing diverse teachers together and overseeing casts of hundreds of students. He chooses plays and musicals that connect to a wide variety of students and their experiences, and no matter how many awards his students win — and they win a lot — he is always working with them to become even better,” his statement read.

Tingey showed her appreciation for every teacher who has a positive impact on students.

“The positive influence and knowledge you and your fellow educators impart to young people strengthens our community and individual lives in immeasurable ways,” she said. “Words cannot adequately express the gratitude we have for the wonderful work you are doing. So please, accept this simple and heartfelt thank-you.” l

A behind the scenes look at a Salt Lake Bees game

hen fans walk into the Smith’s Ballpark and hear the words “Play ball!” they expect a night full of exciting baseball, tasty food and entertainment. What fans don’t see is the work that goes on behind the scenes that starts weeks, days and hours before the first pitch of each game.

It’s the preparation and planning of the groundskeeping department, food and beverage division, and the marketing and communications departments that work together to make a memorable evening for fans coming to the ballpark at 77 W. 1300 South.

Nikki Sim is the game operations and marketing manager for the Salt Lake Bees.

She is responsible for planning all the onfield and video board promotions, the promotional team and staff, theme nights and giveaways. For Sim, her work begins before the fans enter the gates. She is constantly meeting with the video production team, DJs, the PA announcer and promotion team to go over everything to make sure everyone knows their job.

“If everyone is on the same page for videos, promotions, and their responsibilities, things tend to run smoothly. Marketing is very important to a sports team because for the Bees, we want more than the baseball fan to come to a game. We want people who are eager to do something on a warm evening to come to a Bees game and experience more than just baseball,” Sim said.

When you are Matthew Greene, the director of operations for Pro Sports Catering and in charge of all food and beverage at Smith’s Ballpark, your work starts anywhere from two days before a big game or the morning of regular games. Just last year, concessions sold over 25,000 pounds of hot dogs. They also hosted the largest picnic in minor league baseball for a group of 6,000 people.

Greene has over 200 employees who work for him in the food and beverage department. “For many employees, this is their first job and it’s great to see them grow up over

the summers and then we get their younger siblings. You get to know the families and it is rewarding when the older ones come back from college and make it a point to come say hi,” Greene said.

In his duties of director of field operations, Brian Soukup and his crew of two fulltime assistants and two seasonal assistants, make sure the playing field and outside landscaping is in top notch for every home game.

For an evening game, Soukup and his team start working at 9 a.m. to make sure the entire field is mowed, then they pack the bullpens, work the mound and plate, clean and drag the track and spend several hours working the infield dirt. According to Soukup, it is not uncommon for his crew to work 14-15 hour days because after games they stay and repair and prepare the field for the next day. Other jobs they do are water the grass, paint grass lines and set up the field for batting practice.

“We mow the field every day when the team is in town and every other day when they are out of town. That means we mow our lawn about 200 times a year,” Soukup said.

In order to get community members aware of the Salt Lake Bees, Kraig Williams, the communications manager for the Salt Lake Bees, helps with public relations, media relations, community relations and digital media.

“For me and my team it’s informing people of what is happening at the ballpark that they will enjoy, whether that be through social media to promote an upcoming theme night, setting up media interviews with players that fans would like to know or getting the team and our staff out in the community to help,” Williams said.

To these Salt Lake Bees employees, getting fans to games is more than just about baseball. It is trying to make the best experience possible. “We provide more than just baseball,” Sim said. “Children can meet our beloved mascot, Bumble, ride a train, play on a playground, and make memories with their

families.”

Remember these safety tips during fireworks season

I

ndependence Day is a day (and night) to celebrate the birth of our nation. There’s watching parades, enjoying backyard barbecues and, of course, igniting fireworks.

Fireworks. There’s lots of them here, especially with July 24, Pioneer Day, also being a holiday where fireworks play a major entertainment role. In makes for month full of blasts, bangs, whizzes, and sparkly colors lighting up the dark.

But the joys of fireworks come with risks. To avoid accidents (or even death), here’s a few tips to remember as you and neighbors prepare to celebrate your state and country.

• Recent legislation passed in Utah limits the days of the year allowed to light fireworks. Only light fireworks during those days in accordance with the newly passed law.

• Dress appropriately. Loose clothing that can catch fire easily should be left in the drawer, while snugly fitted long sleeves and pants can protect from potential burns.

• Check with your city to determine what areas allow fireworks. Cities such as Sandy and Herriman have decreased the areas that permit fireworks.

• Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.

• Know your fireworks. Read cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.

• Don’t get fancy. While it may be tempting to be creative and construct your own fireworks, the results may not be worth it.

• Responsible adults should not only be present, but should supervise closely.

Never give fireworks to small children.

• Alcohol and fireworks does not make a good cocktail. Save your alcohol for after the show.

• Light one firework at a time and don’t linger. Fireworks look just as pretty from 30 feet away as they do from five.

• This one may seem obvious, but fireworks should be shot outside, not inside.

• Never shoot fireworks into metal or glass containers. The ricochet hurts just as much.

• Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials.

• Report illegal explosives. They ruin it for the rest of us.

• Don’t forget about your pets. Make sure they are securely indoors and have identification tags in case they do escape during a fireworks display.

• Keep fireworks out of reach where curious children can’t get to them. High heat or damp air can damage the fireworks. The best place to put them is in a cardboard box in a high location such as a cabinet or shelf.

• Last, but not least, make sure everyone using fireworks has safety glasses or goggles.

o you know what the first day of summer (June 21) means for a music lover like myself? Summer concerts! Utah, surprisingly (or maybe unsurprisingly?), has an amazing music scene. From rock shows, to country extravaganzas, to electronic music festivals, to rap concerts, to musicals, to recitals; we’ve got it going on.

When purchasing tickets, concertgoers have a few different options. You can purchase tickets through one of the most popular local ticket vendors: Smithstix. Alternatively, you might seek out tickets from TicketMaster, VividSeats, Songkick, Stubhub, or other similar websites. Or, you might buy tickets directly from the venue. For example, if a show is at The Complex or Eccles Theater, you can visit their website and purchase tickets there. The final option is to buy tickets at the door (or maybe even from scalpers).

After spending years refining the craft of buying tickets for the best price possible, the best advice I can give is: it depends. I know, I know, that’s not the answer you were hoping

for. Here’s why: it depends on how much the tickets are, how excited you are to see the artist, and when/where/and how long the show is.

When considering buying concert tickets, I recommend answering the following question: how much do you care about seeing the performance? Usually, that answer has some follow-up questions. Have you been waiting to see this artist/band/show? If so, how long have you been waiting? Do you know song lyrics (if there are lyrics)? Would your life benefit from seeing the artist/band/ show live? Or will it be better to only know them from their videos, televised concerts, etc.?

After gauging your desire to attend the show, figure out how much you would be willing to pay for a ticket. If it’s someone like Lady Gaga or Paul McCartney, are you willing to pay in the triple digits? If it’s someone local, or niche, are you willing to pay $20?

Maybe $40? Once you have an acceptable number in your head, go ahead and search for those tickets, but not before.

At this point, if you find the desired ticket is about $10 below your acceptable price range, go ahead and snag that ticket. Allow for that $10-$20 flexibility, because online vendors will charge various service fees.

Smithstix has at least three different service fees, generally totaling around $15.

Or, if you find the ticket is a little over your price range, but your desire to attend far outweighs the cost, make sure to buy early.

You don’t want to get stuck in a situation where you want to go to a show, but it sold out quickly, so now all the tickets are over $200, when they were originally around $40.

No one wants that.

If the ticket is not in your desired price range, and you’re not sure if you really want to go, you have some options. Buying at the door isn’t a bad one. The awesome thing about buying tickets at the door is the absence of service fees. If a show is going to be $20 at the door, I can bring a $20 bill and be just fine. Not like when a website says it’s going to be $20, then all of a sudden, it’s $35 because of fees.

However, if you wait to buy your ticket at the door, there’s the possibility that the show could sell out. And then you’re back to the question, how much do you care about seeing the performance? Is it worth potentially missing it?

There are places on many websites where you can sign up for pre-sales. Additionally, some ticket vendors, Live Nation for example, will occasionally have $20 ticket weeks, where they list a handful of shows for $20 a ticket. Those are an absolute steal!

ne of my favorite writers, Anne Lamott, said, “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.” I think of this when I’m feeling glitchy, when my processor runs slow, my memory won’t upload and I can’t download complete, coherent sentences.

When my energy drains like a cell phone battery, that’s the sign I’ve neglected my mental health for too long. I get snappy with my husband to the point he tells me to get out of the house and come back when I can act like a grown-up. After flipping him the bird, I pout to my car.

Self-care isn’t just bath bombs and margaritas. Bath bombs dissolve too quickly and margaritas only get me into trouble. Selfcare is tapping into activities that recharge your energy levels. This might mean asking for help (I know, a woman’s ultimate sign of weakness) or finding more time for yourself.

Ordering pizza Monday nights is just fine. Jogging through the park is just fine.

Hiding under your bed eating Hershey kisses is just fine. Telling your family you’re going to get ice-cream, then taking a monthlong drive through the Andes is on the border of just fine.

The point is, find your own self-care routine. This should involve spending time alone. I’m sure in the 1600s, women who practiced self-care were burned at the stake.
