ans of the series “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” know Colin Mochrie as one of the best improv comedians out there. In 2017, Mochrie and his friend Brad Sherwood did an improv show at the Sandy Amphitheater. So when Sandy’s Community Arts Director Merle Marsh heard Mochrie was bringing another show on the road, he lobbied hard to get Mochrie back here.

“The show in 2017 was fun-ny! Comedy can be a tough sell as a show, but all the feedback we got was that people loved it. So when we heard they were taking their new show out on the road, we knew we wanted it to come here to Sandy,” Marsh said.

Marsh got his wish, and the Hyprov show is coming to Sandy Amphitheater July 13. Mochrie called in from Toronto for an interview with the City Journals and said he’s looking forward to the show and the outdoor venue.

“For me I keep coming back to improv because I enjoy it.

It’s the thing I feel most comfortable doing. I’m with people I trust, so I know it’s going to work out. And there’s a lazy factor. I don’t have to memorize things. I get to show up, make up stuff and leave,” Mochrie said.

Mochrie got his start in improv at Second City, an improv and sketch comedy club in Toronto. “My first exposure to improv was a show I saw called theater sports. Then I took an improv workshop and found it was really easy for me. I did Second City and really enjoyed it,” said Mochrie.

Mochrie’s time at Second City came with a bonus: that’s where he met his wife, writer and comedian Debra McGrath.

years and we still like each other! We do shows together,” Mochrie said.

Mochrie said his career and fame in the improv world wasn’t anything he expected. “I never thought that I could make a career out of doing improv. No one did that. But then ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’ came along. It gave us that op-

portunity,” Mochrie said.

The television show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” started in the UK and was originally hosted by Clive Anderson. Mochrie was in the original UK cast. In 1998 it was developed for American television with host Drew Carey and players Colin Mochrie, Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady and a guest. The show Continued Page 11

Sandy City Council adopts tentative budget with 34% property tax increase

andy City will be going through the state-mandated Truth in Taxation process this summer after the city council voted to adopt a tentative budget that includes a 34% property tax increase.

The tentative budget was passed by a 4-3 margin during the council’s June 11 meeting.

The move to increase the city’s property tax revenue triggers what is known as the Truth in Taxation process. Utah law requires that a public hearing be held whenever a taxing entity, in this case a municipal government, proposes to raise revenue through property taxes. Those hearings are often filled with unhappy residents demanding to know why their tax bill is going up.

Context

For a long time Sandy has had one of the lowest tax rates in Salt Lake County. Currently, a $300,000 home in Sandy would pay $208 annually in property taxes, according to a 2017 chart on the Sandy City website. A similar property owner would owe property taxes north of $600 in cities like Riverton, West Valley and Herriman.

Being near the bottom of the list when it comes to taxes is great for residents, but the city’s frugality may have caught up with itself. The city administration laid out what it sees as a need for increased revenue in its tentative budget.

“The costs of maintaining our service levels throughout the community have continued to grow each year from inflation and population growth. A major issue facing the city is that two of our three major financing sources for our general fund, property and franchise taxes, are declining or remaining stagnant and unable to keep up with rising costs. This means our revenues have less buying power, which makes it increasingly more difficult to maintain our service levels.”

“I may be the first Republican to go on record as supporting a tax increase, but I don’t have any money left to operate your city so we could desperately use it,” said Mayor Kurt Bradburn during a city council meeting earlier this year.

A lack of available funds is visible throughout the city, from city buildings in desperate need of repair and renovation, to the police and fire departments being understaffed, to city infrastructure in need of updating. Just this year, residents witnessed firsthand the effects of the latter when fluoride and lead was mistakenly leaked into the drinking water of hundreds of residents.

While everyone within the city acknowledges these urgent needs, not everyone was on the same page as to how they should be funded.

“I’m struggling with the fact that I think there are still a lot of areas of fat in our budget that we need to cut before we do a massive property tax increase,” said Councilwoman Maren Barker, who voted against the

“I don’t think it’s necessary,” said Councilman Chris McCandless, who also voted against it. “I think the mayor’s budget that he presented was a good budget without a tax increase.”

Councilwoman Brooke Christensen, who voted for the tentative budget, said that’s a reasonable amount.

“I think this is necessary,” she said, addressing other council members prior to the vote. “I hope you’ll consider what a minimal impact this is, especially since I know that District 1 has the most low-income housing of any district in our city.”

However, in previous meetings McCandless noted that Sandy would not be the only entity digging a little deeper into taxpayers’ pockets this year.

For example, Canyons School District’s recent teacher pay raise will cost the average homeowner an extra $144 per year, according to the Deseret News. Or there’s the Salt Lake County sales tax increase that started last fall (with a little help from this same Sandy City Council).

On the other hand, the increased revenue from a tax increase will have big impacts for city employees, particularly those charged with keeping Sandy residents safe.

The proposed tax increase would raise nearly $3 million additional revenue for the city each year. The tentative budget calls for the new revenue to go toward a number of things, but one of the most notable is the hiring of five additional police officers and seven additional firefighters.

Councilman Zach Robinson, who has led the campaign for a property tax increase, used to be a Sandy city firefighter.

“As an employee of the city’s fire department, I was told time and time again that we were going to get help. What I’m proposing is that help for our employees,” he said.

Chief Bruce Cline of the fire department said he was excited about the adoption of the tentative budget. “I know nobody likes tax increases,” he said, “but this will definitely improve the service that we are able to provide to our residents.”

Cline also said that as a resident of Sandy himself, he took a look at what the tax increase would cost him, and decided he was willing to pay more in order to keep the city safer.

The tentative budget also includes over $100,000 for new uniforms and equipment for the police and fire departments.

“We’ve been down for so many years as far as personnel and equipment; for the last couple years we’ve been making great strides

“I think the biggest misunderstanding about property taxes is how little of it the city actually gets. We only get 10% of their total, and we do a lot with that 10%,” said Everton.

Meet former Latvian resident Edgar Pavars: he dyes hair and discusses Tolstoy

ith a vocabulary as big as his tattooed forearms, Edgar Pavars is a man of surprises. Numerous American idioms spill out unexpectedly in a Latvian accent, which is as charming as he is. Though he reveals little in his face, you start to know the man as he expertly snips at split ends.

Pavars, a Sandy resident, attributes his good English to asking Americans what a word or phrase meant; he rarely used the dictionary.

Born in a suburb of Moscow, Pavars moved to Rega, Latvia (the capitol of Latvia) with his family when he was just four months old. He lived under Soviet rule for 25 years.

“It’s rather difficult because not everything was bad,” he said. “When you were a child with average parents, you didn’t particularly feel anything was wrong. Young parents usually had difficulty with housing, so in the beginning of your life you live in kind of communal life conditions. My dad, my mom, and me, we lived in one room in dorms for married people. So, on one hand it was very cramped, on the other hand as soon as you got out in the hallway, you had a bunch of friends to play with.”

As his parents aged, their living conditions improved.

“I always remember my parents were short on money. Pay was very low for most people — just barely enough to get through from paycheck to paycheck,” he said.

Pavars, who graduated in mechanical engineering from Rega Polytechnical Institute, has fond memories of his education.

“Opportunities for libraries, theaters, sports were unlimited if you wanted it. You could get as educated as you wanted to be. There were no restrictions whatsoever, with the exception of certain censorship of the intellectual and philosophical thought, which was the foundation of the western cultures. For example, if you wanted to read Plutarch, it was not allowed. You could access it only if you were a history or philosophy major with permission from your professor. However, classics, many other American, English and French writers were not restricted,” he said.

He later studied business and economics at the University of Latvia.

Friends helped Pavars get a visa to come to the United States. “As you leave the Soviet Union, you have to surrender your Soviet Union citizenship, and you literally become a man or a woman without a country,” he said.

With the help of the Tolstoy Foundation, established by the descendants of the great Russian writer, Pavars was able to obtain help as a refugee. The Tolstoy Foundation had several hubs in the United States, one of which was in Salt Lake; when he was offered the destination, he gladly took it.

The biggest cultural shock to Pavars was the ability for people to speak their mind regarding political matters without any fear of

“The Soviet Union was a very big country, and different regions were drastically different from one another. Ethnic republics had a certain influence of their historic pasts, and some of those ethnic republics were not willing joiners into the greater Soviet Union.

There are a variety of different opinions, both positive and negative,” he said.

“My Russian side of the family, my great-grandmother whom I met, she was one of the ex-indentured servants to the descendants of Peter the Great, and they embraced the Soviet system with all their hearts because it gave them freedom and opportunities. Where my Latvian side of the family was occupied or annexed when they were growing up and fully formed people, so they had a definite resistance and more negative approach to the Soviet system,” Pavars said.

Pavars believes that on average, Eastern Europeans are much more community-oriented and significantly less individualistic.

“It takes a little more time to assimilate into American culture,” he said.

“In general, Eastern Europeans can be a little opinionated and lack a certain finesse in their responses. “You didn’t want to stick out too much in one way or another because the hammer was always raised,” Pavars said.

Though he is a realist, Pavars is also hopeful. He paraphrased Tolstoy’s “The Three Questions.”

retribution, “and the fact that hardly anyone but homeless people walk on the streets,” added Pavars. “It’s a very car-oriented culture in Salt Lake City.” People offered him a ride even if he had to only walk a block.

“When I first saw a cooked turkey, to me it was like you killed a pet and you’re cooking a dog. We don’t eat turkeys. It was the most horrific scene I ever saw. You kill a fighting bird which protects the flock,” he said. Corn was also shocking as it was food for pigs in Latvia. “But you have to take that first bite of pig food and turkey.”

Pavars said most Americans don’t know much about Latvia, not even where it is; however, he said people in Salt Lake tend to know more about the regions of the collapsed Soviet Union because of missionary work for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Pavars still “lives” in three countries: Russia, Latvia and America. “If I dream about my friends, it will be in Russian.” He dreams in Latvian if it is regarding friends with whom he participated in sports. If he dreams about current events and his life in the United States, he dreams in English.

His education did not transfer over easily, so he began a new career in the beauty industry because it afforded him a shorter education span and a profession that allowed him the flexibility of time, location and opportunities.

DURING FIREWORKS SEASON

ndependence Day is a day (and night) to celebrate the birth of our nation. There’s watching parades, enjoying backyard barbecues and, of course, igniting fireworks.

Fireworks. There’s lots of them here, especially with July 24, Pioneer Day, also being a holiday where fireworks play a major entertainment role. In makes for month full of blasts, bangs, whizzes, and sparkly colors lighting up the dark.

But the joys of fireworks come with risks. To avoid accidents (or even death), here’s a few tips to remember as you and neighbors prepare to celebrate your state and country.

• Recent legislation passed in Utah limits the days of the year allowed to light fireworks. Only light fireworks during those days in accordance with the newly passed law.

• Check with your city to determine what areas allow fireworks. Cities such as Sandy and Herriman have decreased the areas that permit fireworks.

• Know your fireworks. Read cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.

• Don’t get fancy. While it may be tempting to be creative and construct your own fireworks, the results may not be worth it.

• Responsible adults should not only be present, but should supervise closely.

Never give fireworks to small children.

• Alcohol and fireworks does not make a good cocktail. Save your alcohol for after the show.

• Light one firework at a time and don’t linger. Fireworks look just as pretty from 30 feet away as they do from five.

• This one may seem obvious, but fireworks should be shot outside, not inside.

• Dress appropriately. Loose clothing that can catch fire easily should be left in the drawer, while snugly fitted long sleeves and pants can protect from potential burns.

• Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.

• Never shoot fireworks into metal or glass containers. The ricochet hurts just as much.

• Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials.

• Don’t forget about your pets. Make sure they are securely indoors and have identification tags in case they do escape during a fireworks display. l

“We just celebrated the 30th anniversary of ‘Whose Line’ in the UK. We did a show at the Royal Albert Hall. It was strange to think that I was running around like a chicken and people had paid good money to see that,” Mochrie said.

Mochrie’s new show is a hybrid of improv and hypnosis. His costar Asad Mecci is a self-described master hypnotist who approached Mochrie’s manager a few years ago with the idea to mix hypnotism and improv.

“When my manager called me with the idea, it terrified me enough that I thought, ‘yeah, let’s do it.’ Until we do it, we don’t know what will happen. I asked Asad what might happen if I asked an audience participant a particular question. He’d say, I don’t know,” Mochrie said.

The two workshopped their idea at Second City and got a good response, so then they tried it at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and some shows in London.

“We ask for audience volunteers to come up and be hypnotized, and I am always shocked at how many people are willing to put themselves in our care. They rush the stage like we’re offering free drinks or something,” said Mochrie.

Mochrie said it’s also fun to combine the two acts because there are a lot of peo-

ple who don’t believe in hypnosis and a lot of people who don’t believe in improv. “I always like to talk to the people who participated afterwards and ask them if they remember. They say yes they did, ‘but when you said to do something it sounded like a good idea, so I did it,’” said Mochrie.

Mochrie is excited to return to the Sandy Amphitheatre.

“I remember the show in Sandy in 2017 and I’m looking forward our July show. It’s a nice challenge to do a show outdoors with hypnotized people. What could go wrong?

Well, come and see!” said Mochrie.

“There’s an age limit and to be hypnotized in our show you need to be 18 or older.

But it will be good for all ages. There’s no foul language, and I would say it’s at the very least PG,” Mochrie said.

Marsh said this will be a family-friendly night, but for the first time this summer they’ll also be selling beer at all Sandy Amphitheater shows, including this one. “We got requests for a long time and it was recently approved by the city council. So we have a special event license to sell beer, and we’ll have our grill going for food during the show.”

“It’s going to be a great night. You’re outdoors, it’s a great way to spend your summer evening and laugh yourself silly,” said Marsh. l

Draper Elementary Principal Christy Waddell and Sunrise Elementary Principal Margaret Swanicke recently were honored as both region 17 and the state PTA Administrators of the Year. Both administrators were nominated by their school PTA chapters. “The PTA award is the most meaningful as the parents are appreciating my efforts and I couldn’t do what I do without their support,” Waddell said, adding that she often is on the playground with students or supporting an after-school yoga session. Swanicke, who was surprised to win the award, said many of her comments also mentioned she was engaged with students. “It’s an honor and I appreciate our PTA,” she said. “Sunrise PTA is well run and offers the best programs for our students.” Both administrators received certificates, plaques and $100 gift cards. Utah kid with type 1 diabetes is American Ninja Warrior Jr. champion

I

t’s safe to say that Kai Beckstrand of Utah is a real ninja. He’s proved that in a few ways, and at just 12 years old. Regular followers of the City Journals may have read about his talents and exploits, when Kai moved on as a finalist in the American Ninja Warrior Jr. competition last year.

Those watching him compete on television saw Kai’s signature blonde mohawk — a punk style head that kept calm and cool.

His stellar focus was fixed strong under that straight-up hairdo. The competition aired on Universal Kids network television, and Kai dominated. He not only overcomes visible obstacles, but also the daily ninja challenges of type 1 diabetes.

To be selected for the competition, Kai explained, “I was chosen to be on the show by submitting a video and written application, and from there we went to LA. Once there, it was round robin style racing. It was head-to-head, winner faces loser, and then the two winners faced off to make it into the top 32 contestants in their age group. After that, it was single elimination. I ended up having seven races and won all of them” Kai said. He finished off with five of the seven fastest times in his age group.

News traveled fast from St. George to Salt Lake City when Kai had made it into the finals. His mother Holly Beckstrand grew up in Sandy and is an Alta High alumna. Kai’s parents now own and operate a training gym in southern Utah called the Grip Ninja, where their whole family trains, practices and has bonding time. Visiting their gym could be a fun destination place when headed for a St. George trip.

Lots of people watched and rooted for this amazing kid with spiked hair, who is also spiked with positive attitude. The type 1 diabetes community heartily cheered for Kai on social media. Being type 1 diabetic and a professional athlete requires vigilance to the extreme — more than an average ninja might bring to the course.

“Kai won $15,000 as the grand prize,” his mom said. “After the show we were able to upgrade the way he manages his diabetes by getting a CGM (continuous glucose monitor).” A CGM is a device a diabetic wears 24/7. A needle attached to a sensor punctures the skin and stays implanted for 10 days before it is replaced with a new one. It reads interstitial fluid to predict blood sugar changes, using Bluetooth to transmit those values to a smartwatch or smartphone. Parents can watch their child’s blood sugar using a follow app.

A CGM is life-saving technology, but can be difficult for diabetics and their families to afford. “We are still working on getting an insulin pump for him too,” Holly

said. “They are so expensive, but the CGM itself has been a game-changer for him with his athletics, and has given me some peace of mind. It’s a scary, scary thing,” she said. She can now see Kai’s blood sugar in real time, even while he’s training.

People with type 1 diabetes have rigorous medical challenges all day. It is a myth that exercise always makes diabetes easier.

Intense exertion can actually make blood sugar quickly rise or fall out of range. So someone with type 1 must work hard for health stability when pursuing athletic hobbies and careers. Kai is a great role model for any diabetic wondering if sports can still be done.

Kai is now patiently waiting to see if he’ll be selected to compete again in season two. If chosen, he will be in the next age group of competitors — ages 13-14. But he might have to up his sass game (like rolling his eyes more, stomping off and slamming doors) if he’s going to compete with real-life teenagers. Actually, according to his mom, he’s much more on the congenial and humorous side.

Abandoned rabbits, guinea pigs find a safe haven run by 14 year old

ucky the rabbit arrived at the MAR Animal Rescue fighting for her life. She had difficulty breathing and her infected eyes were sealed shut with yellow pus. Isabella Eskelson, the 14-year-old owner of the rescue, immediately put her extensive knowledge of small animal care into action.

“She was the severest out of all the rabbits,” referring to the 30-plus rabbits she rescued from a hoarding bust in Vernal. “She had a long-term respiratory infection, her fur was gone and her skin was scabbed from mite bites.” As she does with every animal who arrives at her no-kill rabbit and rodent rescue, Isabella uses all measures available to her to ensure Lucky has every chance to survive, thrive and find a permanent home.

The Sandy teenager, who will attend Corner Canyon High School as a freshman, does it all on her own — from the handling of daily care to vetting adoption applicants to fundraising.

Every day, she’s up at 7 a.m. to attend to her charges — currently 13 rabbits and three guinea pigs (including one who is pregnant) with feeding and administering medications.

After school, she dons gloves and a face mask (she is allergic to hay) to clean cages, apply fresh bedding and monitor the animals’ weight. Then, she gives them love and socialization time.

“A lot of them are special needs, so every 12 hours I administer their medicine.

Others, I have to make critical care for because they can’t eat properly,” she said.

She’s run MAR Animal Rescue since 2017, after finding neglected rabbits at a local petting zoo. But helping those in need started long before then. As a child, Isabella was influenced by her family’s focus on service to others, which has included gathering donations for Family Promise and donating Christmas trees to addiction recovery centers.

Even before her rabbit rescue at age 9, she assisted animals, notably bettas — colorful, ray-finned freshwater fish housed in plastic cups at the pet store. The manager gave her the ailing bettas for free and she nursed them back to health. All found forever homes thanks to Isabella’s knack for connecting fish lovers with fish on social media.

“We saved a lot of fish,” she said.

Rabbits have always fascinated Isabella, who did extensive research into their care before embarking on her endeavor.

“I feel for them,” she said. “They aren’t recognized a lot in rescue groups, especially in Utah, which is a farm state and people think they can just put them outside and they’ll be okay.” That’s incorrect, she said.

Domestic rabbits, like any indoor house pet, need love, attention and proper housing. As with cats, they can be litterbox trained.

“With love, care and effort, a rabbit will form a bond with you,” she said.

las arrive after someone finds them, usually abandoned, always neglected. Springtime brings an influx of rabbits, most of which are cast off after Easter. Isabella’s advice to anyone wanting a bunny for their child’s Easter gift: “Get a stuffed (toy) animal instead.”

Whatever money she gets from babysitting, birthdays or holidays goes toward the rescue.

Medical care takes up the majority of donated funds, as well as her time, which sometimes requires Isabella to check out of school for urgent vet visits. Wasatch Exotic Pet Care in Cottonwood Heights has been “very flexible,” she says, in providing care for her animals and offering reduced sterilization fees for the rabbits and their offspring involved in the hoarding bust.

“I feel that Isabella is doing an amazing job,” said Laurel Harris, doctor of veterinary medicine at Wasatch Exotic Pet Care. “She is mature beyond her years and her ambition and level of commitment to these animals are commendable. This is not just ‘playing with the bunnies’ to her. It is clear that she provides excellent care, which is a lot of work, every day. She’s a pretty amazing young woman with a bright future ahead of her.”

Luckily for Lucky, her eyes and skin have healed since coming into Isabella’s care a year ago, although she still suffers from respiratory difficulties. Nonetheless, Isabella is hopeful Lucky will find foster care and, later, a permanent home.

“We work hard to find rabbits a forever home, including for the special needs ones,” she said. “Some rabbits stay longer here, but it doesn’t matter how long they stay. They’ll have safe care with us.”

The facts on vaccine-preventable diseases in the Salt Lake Valley

s of June 6, the CDC reported there were 1,022 confirmed cases of measles in the U.S.. In 2016, there were only 86. This growing number puts the country at risk of losing its “eliminated” status for these infectious diseases. Salt Lake Valley experts weigh in on what this means and what we can do to prevent it.

“It’s painful to hear that statistic,” said Dr. T.W. Jones, a fellow in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Utah. “It’s frustrating because these diseases are preventable.”

“We’ve come so far in eliminating dangerous and deadly diseases. A physician’s passion is to see children grow up to be strong and healthy, and instead you see misinformation leading to a possible public health crisis,” said Jones.

In response to CDC reports, the Utah Department of Health released a statement on May 2 that they are worried about vaccine-preventable diseases in Utah.

Dr. Allyn Nakashima of the UDOH wrote, “Although we haven’t seen any measles cases in Utah this year, we are seeing a dramatic increase in cases of mumps, one of the diseases preventable with the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine.”

“These mumps cases are a warning that the introduction of measles in the state could result in a large outbreak if we are not vigi-

lant,” said Nakashima.

Dr. Tamara Sheffield, medical director of Community Health and Prevention for Intermountain Healthcare, added, “Measles is so contagious that if one person has it, 90 percent of the people who are not immune and are close to that person will also become infected.”

Sheffield said in an April 11 article in the Deseret News that while measles has yet to hit Utahns, “we’re only one airline flight within a case coming here.” According to CDC data, measles cases have been reported in every state that borders Utah except for Wyoming. She urged people to consider the social responsibility. “If we’re not getting vaccinated, we’re putting other people at risk,” she said.

Jones said this concept is called “herd immunity.” “If you get enough people vaccinated, even if there are a few people who can’t get vaccinated, there’s an overwhelming statistical power. It can’t create a chain of transmission,” said Jones.

Those who “can’t get vaccinated” are not otherwise healthy children whose parents choose not to vaccinate them; they are children who are allergic to the vaccine or already have compromised immune systems.

weakened immune systems. They can’t get immunized. Measles is one of the most infectious diseases in the world. Worse than small pox; worse than Ebola. If our community doesn’t band together to prevent a measles outbreak, it can be deadly for those individuals,” said Jones.

As of May 24, the CDC reported that there were 1,002 reported cases of mumps in 42 states, including Utah. “Mumps is associated with inflammation, including inflammation of the testicles and sterility in males. It can cause meningitis,” Jones said.

“Measles is dangerous. It causes tens of thousands of deaths worldwide every year.

People today may think that because the previous generation dealt with it as a childhood illness, it’s not a big deal. But it can and does cause death and disability through pneumonia, encephalitis, coma and brain death. We created a vaccine because it was dangerous,” Jones said.

Misty McKenna lives in the Midvale/ Sandy area and has three school-age children who attend Canyons District schools. “I feel like vaccinating my kids is imperative to their health and also to the health of our community. It makes me nervous for those kids who are too young or allergic and can’t be vaccinated,” McKenna said.

“It’s sad that due to misinformation, we have to deal with these things that were pretty much eradicated,” McKenna said, referring to fears that persist about vaccines being dangerous or causing autism.

“It’s been proven that the autism study was flawed and made to say what people wanted it to say. And now here we are dealing with people getting sick and dying,” McKenna said.

McKenna said she speaks from experience on studying the link between vaccines and autism because her son is on the autism

spectrum. “My child was born with autism; he didn’t get it from being vaccinated.”

“Concerns that vaccines cause autism dates back to the Wakefield study in the late 1990s,” said Jones. “His report, which was scientifically inaccurate, was limited to a handful of children and was financially fraudulent. He was stripped of his medical license, and there’s no scientific evidence to back up his claim.”

Jones said he understands the human need to blame something. “When a child has an illness or a serious disorder like autism, of course we want to look for a reason. We want to assign blame. Autism is really complex to define, but we’ve gotten better at screening for it, and that’s one of the reasons we’re seeing an increase in cases,” said Jones.

Jones said he’s not recommending his patients do anything that he wouldn’t do himself. “I have two young daughters, and they have been fully vaccinated since day one.

Every pediatrician I know would be willing to talk to parents who have concerns about vaccines,” Jones said.

“Social media is often an echo chamber; it’s easy to go online and get information you agree with. I sit down and have a conversation with parents to make sure that we’re sharing the most correct information. I make sure families know I would never endanger their children,” said Jones.

Schools are major players in the fight to prevent the spread of disease. Canyons School District spokesperson Kirsten Stewart said, “Utah law requires that children from kindergarten to the 12th grade provide proof of immunization in order to attend public school, charter schools and private and parochial schools,” Stewart said.

That doesn’t mean that all children at a school are immunized. “Per Utah law, parents can ask for exemptions for medical, religious or personal reasons. But in the event of an outbreak, we follow policies that may result in excluding unvaccinated children from school to prevent the spread of disease,” said Stewart.

Teachers and other school staff also need to be immunized or risk missing work days.

“In the event of a disease outbreak, schoolbased employees (in Canyons District) must produce proof of immunization, or risk being excluded from work,” said Stewart.

The district follows Utah Department of Health policy. An exposure of infectious diseases in a school has potential to cause harm to an entire community. “If you or your children aren’t vaccinated, it’s not a risk you’re taking just for yourself, it’s for everyone around you,” Jones said.

For Jones and those who care for the well-being of children in the Salt Lake Valley, it comes down to the health and safety of children. “As these diseases work their way back into our communities, it weakens us. Part of our success as a civil society is that our children have the freedom to grow up healthy.” l

Take a chance on Sandy Amphitheater’s August production of ‘Mamma Mia!’

f you’re looking for an easy, breezy summer show, check out the Sandy Amphitheater’s production of “Mamma Mia!” which runs August 2-10.

“It’s ABBA music. You’re outside, in the summer, as the sun sets. It doesn’t get much better than that!” said Julie Blatter, who plays Rosie in “Mamma Mia!” Like all jukebox musicals, “Mamma Mia!” capitalizes on the popularity of a particular entertainer’s music, in this case ABBA. The poppy foursome from Sweden made it big in the 1970s with hits like “Dancing Queen” and “Take a Chance on Me.” Director Nolan Mitchell said, “These shows can feel like a bunch of great music strung together by a shallow plot. But this one is fun, this one has heart.” Mitchell is a veteran actor and director in Salt Lake’s theater community.

“I always ask myself, ‘What story are we trying to tell?’ With ‘Mamma Mia!’ it’s the relationship between Donna and her daughter Sophie. She’s been a single mother and raised this daughter. And all along she’s pined for Sam,” said Mitchell.

“The other relationship at the heart of the story is Donna reconnecting with Sam, the love of her life,” said Mitchell. Mitchell has wanted to do “Mamma Mia!” since before the rights were available.

“Sandy productions have a good reputation. We get a great turnout for auditions because actors from around the valley know we set the bar high,” Mitchell said. Though the cast makes it look easy, these productions are a lot of work.

Sandy could experience ABBA overload. On June 29 Sandy Amphitheater is bringing back “Arrival: The Music of ABBA.” “‘Arrival’ packs the amphitheater.

It’s a great show, and it goes hand-in-glove with our show,” said Mitchell.

The story is set on a Greek island where Donna is helping her daughter Sophie prepare for her wedding. Guests include Donna’s best friends Tanya and Rosie, played by Corinne Adair and Blatter. Adair was in Sandy’s production of “Noises Off” earlier this year.

“My character is definitely a cougar.

She’s brash, loveable, doesn’t take anything seriously. I love all the music, but my favorite is ‘Take a Chance on Me.’ I don’t sing it during this show, so I get to just sit back and

watch,” Adair said.

Adair, who visited the ABBA museum on a recent trip to Stockholm, said people will come away from the show ABBA converts. “People are going to be pleasantly surprised by how polished our show is. And you can’t leave the show not in love with ABBA music,” Adair said.

Morgan Hekking of Sandy plays Sophie, who is engaged to Sky. “This is a show that gets people up on their feet. I love that they leave feeling uplifted,” Hekking said.

Hekking, who was in a Sandy production of “The Little Mermaid,” said Sandy shows are well organized. “We have rehearsal most nights, and the rehearsal schedule is color-coded and organized into nights of choreography or blocking,” Hekking said.

Sophie’s fiancée Sky is played by Patrick Hawkins. This is Hawkins’s first Sandy show.

“The best thing about my character is that I basically get to be a beach bum

on stage. I really like the song ‘Does Your Mother Know.’ Performing outside is going to be great. The sun will go down as the show plays out, and it really sets the mood,” Hawkins said.

Sam’s wingman is Pepper, played by Nate Leituala. “This is my second show with Sandy. I play the bartender on the island. He’s a fun character, light, comedic.

My favorite songs to sing are ‘Super Trooper’ for the harmony and ‘Does Your Mother Know,’” Leituala said.

Leituala loves the dancing and the costumes. “In my family, everyone plays sports.

But that’s not my thing. I’m always posting on social media, ‘Come see my show!’”

For those expecting flashy 70s costumes, costumer Chad McBride said, “You won’t be disappointed. Most of the show feels contemporary because it’s set in 1999.

But there’s a big number at the end, and that’s when we pull out the gold jumpsuits and the bellbottoms.”

Choreographer Jann Levitre created choreography that showcases the music and costumes. All the actors said they are excited to perform their favorite songs, especially in the amphitheater setting.

“My favorite song is ‘Chiquitita’ for the amazing harmonies. And ‘Take a Chance’ is fun. It’s for Bill. He needs to get out there and get some lovin’!” Blatter said.

But most of all, Blatter said she loved the theme of friendship in the show. “This is a story about true friendship, loyalty and love among women. Our show is organized and it’s high quality, but most of all it’s fun. We are going to rock that hill!” l

Headstone in Sandy cemetery honors African American pioneer buried in unmarked grave

much, and the fact that he didn’t have a headstone weighed on us,” said Orton.

Orton worked with Utah Headstone Design and found an African Adinkra symbol for the marker: the image of a morning star inside of a wheel.

“It’s called Sesa Wo Suban, and it’s a combination of two symbols. It means to change or transform your character. I felt like that was symbolic of the life that Hark led, but also the role he played in the community,” said Orton.

On Memorial Day, roughly 100 people gathered at the small pioneer cemetery to honor the life of Hark Lay Wales. Burch planned the program.

“I wanted the community to turn out and be a part of the celebration. Not the white community, not the black community, but the Utah community because the work Hark did impacted everyone who lives here,” said Burch.

The program included Rep. Sandra Hollins, who is the first African American female to serve in the Utah State House of Representatives; Pastor Marlin Lynch III of Kingdom Huddle in Salt Lake City; and other modern-day pioneers.

Music was performed by BYU students who are also active in the Genesis group — the group created by the Church in 1977 to support the black community.

“I turned to black college kids for the music. They included Andre Johnson, Nathaniel Bird, Byron Williams, Yahosh Bonner and James Sheppard. We ended the program singing ‘Amazing Grace,’ and then Pastor Lynch led us in prayer,” Burch said.

Media coverage of the event brought new visitors to the little cemetery. “We’ve driven by here a million times and always meant to stop. I heard the story about the gravestone and decided to stop tonight,” said Michelle Syslo, who visited the cemetery with her friend on June 6.

Syslo, a teacher at Butler Middle School, was interested in the history of the little cemetery and the new headstone. “I saw the pictures in the newspaper. It’s a beautiful way to honor that man’s legacy,” Syslo said.

We need the community to contact Utah AAHGS on Facebook and tell us their stories, tell us where there is a need,” said Burch said.

“Being a part of this was a beautiful experience. Knowing about Hark’s story is essential to the story of Utah’s pioneers. The fact is that black men were the backbone.

They were the grit. And their story has been completely left out,” Burch said.

Now that the stone is laid, another piece of Hark Lay Wales’s story is documented. “It makes me feel very happy. I personally feel very privileged to have been a part of it,” Burch said. l

ost Utahns know the story of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints who arrived in 1847 and settled the Salt Lake Valley. What may surprise people is that three pioneer families from the South brought enslaved people with them. What may surprise them even more is that the remains of one of these black Utah pioneers lay in an unmarked grave for 130 years.

“This is a part of the history that we’ve been trying to get out for a long time,” said Alice Burch of West Valley City. Burch is secretary of the Utah chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society.

The three enslaved men who came to Utah in 1847 with Brigham Young’s company were Green Flake, Hark Lay Wales and Oscar Crosby Smith.

Flake and Wales eventually settled in the Union area. “There was a small black community there. Both died there, and both were buried at the Union Pioneer Memorial Cemetery,” Burch said.

But while Flake had a marker in the little cemetery at 1533 East Creek Road, Wales, who died in 1887, did not.

were the family that brought Hark to Utah as an enslaved person. In doing some research, she discovered that Hark was buried in Union Cemetery, but that he was laid in an unmarked grave. She wanted to change that,” Burch said.

Orton reached out to Burch and historian Amy Tanner Thiriot to get a grave marker for Wales. They set a goal of setting the marker

by May 27, Memorial Day. They set up a GoFundMe campaign and got the word out that they wanted this to be a community event.

“The Union Cemetery is small and maintained by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP). It is not open to new burials, so we had to work with the DUP for a long time getting something that we could all agree on,” Orton said.

Orton felt strongly that the grave marker should look “of the period,” but also speak to Wales’s black ancestry and the important role he played in the settlement of Utah. “These were the people who went ahead and did the hard work,” said Orton.

“I did this from a family perspective.

I was motivated by the fact that Hark came into the valley and made things easier for my husband Steve’s ancestors. He sacrificed so

That message — to begin now to eat healthier and become more active — was the goal of Canyons School District’s Family Learning Centers’ eighth annual Sombrero Walk, which recently took about 30 participants on a round-trip stroll from Copperview Elementary to Copperview Recreation Center.

“We want our parents to be healthy and have good food sense,” Canyons School District Title I Specialist Sierra Segura said.

“We start with going for a walk to promote simple exercise, and then, we want them to learn more about foods. It doesn’t have to be difficult, just even switching from soda and cookies to water and granola bars can make a difference through the summer.”

Midvale Family Learning Center instructor Karen Rodriguez said that while many families will walk to school, it’s during the summer they could become more inactive.

“Kids go to school and when there isn’t school, then they don’t always get their exercise,” she said. “We want to have them continue to be active and healthy all summer.”

After the sombrero walk, participants learned about medical and dental options, recreation activities and local library offerings.

“For our school, reading slide is a reality so we encourage our students to read,” Landward said, adding that summer literacy kits with about four books, math and literacy ac-

tivities, and snacks will be given to students.

Midvale and East Midvale elementaries also planned to support students with reading and literacy activities as well.

However, Landward also said nutrition was something she hoped parents would embrace over the summer.

“We want parents to be wise at the grocery store and find a way to eat healthy on a budget, to remember their fruits and veg-

etables and that many processed foods add sugar,” she said.

While sipping a sample of licuado de plátano, Sombrero Walk parents also got a lesson from Utah State University’s Food $ense program — presented all in Spanish, which was translated into other languages for some parents.

“The main objective is how to teach families who may be struggling on a budget, how to eat healthy and to encourage physical activity,” said Paola Johnson, USU nutritional educational assistant. “We want to introduce healthy portions of a plate, planning for healthy meals, smart ways to go grocery shopping, give a sample of a healthy snack with basic ingredients, and learn about lean proteins, low fats and portions.”

Although the actual Create Better Health Curriculum course is eight weeks, Johnson gave them tips such as buy low-fat milk, yogurt and cheese or wash processed foods that are packed in salt, oil or syrup. She suggested eating tortillas as grains rather than bread or rice.

Participants also received a healthy recipe booklet in Spanish to try this summer.

“When we develop a healthy eating pattern, our body feels healthy,” Johnson said.

“When we add activity to our routine, we begin to lead healthy lifestyles.” l

Jim Peery takes pride in cleaning Sandy sidewalks—on his scooter

hances are, many motorists have probably seen the man in a green hat riding a red motorized scooter off of Highland on Newcastle. Several regularly wave to him.

Sandy resident Jim Peery rides along that area almost daily from spring to fall, not only out for fresh air, but to exercise and serve his community.

Put in reverse — beep, beep, beep — exercise? Yep, that’s right.

Equipped with tools he can use while on his scooter, Peery will rake and scoop up trash and debris along his journey, bagging it for Sandy City to pick up.

“When Sandy Pride day was coming last year, I realized they couldn’t paint that Redwood fence they had planned to with all the junk at the bottom of it,” he said. “They needed somebody to clean it out. Then, I said, I’m somebody. I can do it, and dug out junk, paper, Maple leaves, wrappers, and it started all right there.”

Since then, whenever Peery rides, his basket is filled with tools, including pinchers, to pick up trash to put in bags his wife buys.

After four hours of cleaning up the sidewalks almost every day, Peery leaves behind 10 to 15 bags of trash he collects, then he contacts Sandy City to send a crew over to pick them up.

“It’s really been a gratifying thing to do.

It’s something I can do by myself to make a difference. I’ve had so many people stop and say thank you. My idea is just to try to make it look nicer, a better experience, for those walking dogs, biking, running or using the sidewalk and grassy area as they go to Flat Iron Park or the LDS stake there,” he said.

This isn’t a job he wants to be paid for,

nor necessarily get attention.

“I just enjoy doing it. It’s a win-win. I feel better when I go outside and exercise, and as a result, it benefits our community and Sandy looks better without all the trash that collects along the fence line,” he said.

Twenty years ago, Peery began having problems walking. Neurologically, the

message to keep his balance while walking failed.

“It was sudden. I couldn’t get my legs and feet to work, to balance. They don’t know why, but they know I’ll always be this way. Whatever or why, I’m blessed that I’m stable and can ride the scooter so I can still get around,” he said.

With the change of movement, his position as a computer programmer with Williams ceased.

“I became a liability in a case of emergency. They would have had to get me out of the building fast and that would be hard to do in a wheelchair. Since 2005, I’ve done volunteer work,” he said.

In the winter, Peery switches to indoor volunteer work of scanning governmental records and helping his church with databases.

When the weather improves, it’s back to cleaning the city. He does it on his own, without the help of his wife, his four adult daughters or 13 grandchildren.

“It’s all my thing. I enjoy doing it. It takes a lot of time, but then, I have a lot of time. I’ve met so many interesting people and others wave and honk. They probably just think, there’s the man with the green hat and the red scooter back at it again,” Peery said. “I’m glad I can just do my part.” l

BRADBURN BRIEF Dear Sandy Resident, Did you know the area between 9000 South and 11400 South and I-15 and the TRAX line is called The Cairns District? The Cairns District includes Real Stadium, Hale Centre Theatre, Mountain America Expo Center, The Shops at South Town, and numerous corporate offices and residential complexes. SUMMER SAFETY FOR KIDS With summer vacation in full swing, many kids are out of school.

Parents should ensure their children remain safe while on summer vacation. Here are a few tips to follow: • If children are home alone and are allowed to answer the phone, they should never tell the caller that they are home alone.

• If someone knocks on the door, do not open the door but let the person know someone is inside the residence. Do not let them know the child is home alone.

• Assure that they know how to call 911 and when it is appropriate to do so. Also establish a schedule for the child to check in with mom or dad.

• Establish house rules for use of the computer, especially the internet. The computer can be a valuable learning tool, but is not a good babysitter. Make sure the child knows never to give out personal information on the computer.

• Your children need to wear a helmet while riding a bike, scooter, or roller skates, etc.

• Teach your children that it is best to be in a group of friends when going places.

Most people want information, and they want it now. Fortunately, we live in a time when instant information is possible. In addition to getting information, many are willing to provide information about themselves on social media channels, including photos and videos, but when it comes to emergency preparedness, they would rather do nothing, or opt-out of the emergency notification process, claiming a need for privacy.

There are many ways to receive notifications/warnings including: cell phones, landline phones, text messages, websites, social media, etc. But to be effective, people must opt-in to receive most messages. Sprucewood students raise more than $12k for PTA programs

More than 400 Sprucewood kindergarten through fifth-grade students recently laced up their shoes to complete the one-mile fun run fundraiser. This year’s course was new, weaving through the neighborhood, and included “a wicked hill in the middle,” said parent Lisa Hansen, who has chaired the fun run with Leslie Roberts the past three years. “(We) decided that a run through the neighborhood would not only give the kids a fun challenge, but also create a fantastic event that the entire community could take part in.” Several families, and even a four-legged family member, joined in the fun and neighbors cheered on the runners and other parents volunteered for the event. Students, who received donations, surpassed the goal of raising $10,000 and collected more than $12,500, which will be used to support PTA programs at Sprucewood, including Red Ribbon Week, Reflections, teacher appreciation, classroom grants and field trips. Mick Riley: Utah’s Mr. Golf

By Shaun Delliskave | s.delliskave@mycityjournals.com What is the only golf course in Utah named after an actual professional golfer? If you said Jeremy Ranch or Nibley Park, try again. That distinction belongs to Mick Riley Golf Course, named after the man known as the “Dean of Utah Golfers.”

While the Murray course is always busy, most people have forgotten or don’t even know about Riley. Also, contrary to many high school golf team rumors, Mr. Riley is not buried by the clubhouse (he is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, although he probably wouldn’t have complained had he been buried at a golf course).

Born in 1897 in Burke, Idaho, Joseph Michael (Mick) Riley found his way to Utah.

There weren’t many options for linksters when Riley was taking up the sport in the 1910s. At the time, Forest Dale had a hitching post for golfer’s horses.

Riley learned golf by caddying at the Salt Lake Country Club, being mentored by notable golfers such as George Von Elm, several years his junior. Von Elm, who grew up in Utah and California, and with Riley as his caddie, took on one of the preeminent golfers of the day, Bobby Jones (who would later found the Masters Golf Tournament). Von Elm became the first golfer from west of the Mississippi River to win a major tournament, and he not only instilled in Riley a passion for golf but exposed him to some of the best golf courses in America.

Like a duck to water, Riley’s experience, plus winning an occasional tournament, helped to secure his position as the first head professional at Nibley Park Golf Course. According to sportswriter Bill Johnston, there were only 122 active golfers in Salt Lake City at the time. For the uninitiated, a professional at a golf course is someone who makes their living from teaching the game, running golf clubs and classes, and dealing in golf equipment.

It was Riley’s job to develop interest and get the golfers out. He did.”

Not only did he get the golfers to come out, he developed a course championship, several tournaments, and high school matches. He developed greens and challenging hazards; he also developed aspiring golfers and advocated the sport to women. It was this latter undertaking that led Mick to meet his wife, Estella at one of his classes.

Utah’s most enthusiastic golf cheerleader would do anything to bring people to experience the game. Even winter was no match for Riley, who opened one of the first indoor golf ranges in downtown Salt Lake in 1930. The Telegram reported that by 1947, 80 percent of all Utah golfers were, at one time, a pupil of Riley’s.

His green design skills were in high demand, as he helped plan courses in Magna, Tooele, Richfield, Moab, Indian Springs, and American Falls, Idaho, as well as Salt Lake’s Bonneville Golf Course. He also revamped the Nibley Park and Forest Dale courses. However, his passion project was Meadowbrook on 3900 South, which he designed and managed until his death.

His progressive thinking led to the establishment of a day care center at Meadowbrook, so that young mothers could take up the game.

After forming the Utah Golf Association, Riley was elected as vice president of the National PGA and served for three years. He also served on several national PGA committees. He was president of the Rocky Mountain Section of the PGA and Golf Professional of the Year in 1955 for the Rocky Mountain Section.

During the 1960s, he was asked to design the Little Valley Golf Course off of Vine Street in Murray. However, his death in

1964 prevented him from ever teeing off at the course. That honor was given to Estella, his wife, and their children at the newly christened Mick Riley Golf Course in 1967.

Riley was also posthumously honored as a member of the Utah Golf Hall of Fame.

Perhaps the Salt Lake Telegram summed up Riley best, “The story of Mickey Riley is the story of golf in Utah, for without him many of the municipal courses that have made golf available to the ‘working man’ might not be.” l

alized that, to help make golf as American as apple pie, perhaps borrowing from Little Leagues’ playbook was a good strategy. Hence the birth of the PGA Junior League—a program that SoJo’s Glenmoor jumped on.

“Golf has the old-retired-guy-with-alot-of-money persona,” said Glenmoor golf pro Olsen. “All ages, all types, something for everyone and family-friendly” is how she described Glenmoor’s current suite of customers.

And that takes us to right now — high golf season, a late-starting, green-grass summer, on the heels of the wettest spring on record.

And just as spring signals rebirth and summer joy, Glenmoor is in its newfound salad days, with its junior golf program to thank.

Taking a page from Bubba Watson’s 2012 Masters’ clinch, Olsen tears up, telling the South Jordan Journal just how “awesome” the kids in her program are and how things at Glenmoor have “turned out better than I could have hoped.”

This is a woman who loves — no lives — golf, and apparently, has a community behind her that feels the same way.

As part of the Warren Report YouTube video, SoJo City Councilman Don Shelton recounts that his inviting SoJo Mayor Dawn Ramsey and his other colleagues to watch one of the junior league tournaments at Glenmoor influenced the Council’s decision to ultimately rezone the land to keep it from being developable.

“It was very impressive to them, to see all of the young people that were out on the golf course, hitting golf balls and recreating in the outdoors, instead of being inside, playing video games,” Shelton asserted on-air.

“Mayor Ramsey, thank you for saving our golf course,” young Warren tells Mayor Dawn Ramsey, who also appears in the video.

Utah golf families: ‘THEY’RE EVERYWHERE!

There are quite a few golf dads around.

And golf moms.

Devin estimates Utah has “about five to 10” prominent golf families.

Back in 1989, the “Los Angeles Times” ran a story with a San Diego dateline and a headline style vaguely reminiscent of prominence given to “WAR!” in newspaper headlines chronicling the outbreak of World War I. Only this time, the exclamation point was reverent appreciation for a prominent Utah golf family.

“THEY’RE EVERYWHERE!: Utah’s Summerhays Families Put 11 Golfers in Tournament,” the headline read. “They are the Summerhays entourage, 11 golfers from two related families plus a supporting cast of five,” writer Jim Lindgren gushed.

The Summerhays family, from the Farmington area, today continues to be prominent in golfing headlines with Preston Summerhays, Lynn Summerhays’s grandson, holding a Utah State Amateur title and being “one of the best juniors in the country.”

The Branca family is another storied Utah golf clan.

The Salt Lake Country Club provided a lasting monument to the late H.T. “Tee” Branca, naming a bridge patterned after Augusta National’s famous 12th hole after the late PGA golf pro. Branca lived until age 92, In 2015, when Ron Branca, Tee’s son, retired as head pro from the Salt Lake Country Club, Joe Watts of the Utah Golf Association (UGA) mourned “the end of the Branca era.” The father and son, combined, headed golf for the club more than 75 years. Ron Branca now works with

Glenmoor’s happily golf-obsessed Darci Olsen, who used to go by the name Darci Dehlin-Olsen, has now dropped the hyphenated part of her name, a loss of a powerful asset, according to brother Devin Dehlin.

Golf Etiquette Makes For Perfect Green Carpet for Anti-Bullying Fund-Raising Event at Stonebridge

While the PGA does not specifically call out “no bullying,” that concept is a given in the sportsmanlike-play of the 15th-century game still. Such sport made perfect sense as a fund raiser for an anti-bullying education group, “Stand for Kind,” to leverage the sport for one of its annual fundraising activities.

Making a positive difference in the persistent problem of bullying

Stand for Kind, founded by well-connected businessman and recreational golfer Stan Parrish, is a group of business, community and education leaders who have come together to make a positive difference in the persistent problem of bullying.

Instead of just preaching about the ills and dangers of bullying — what Parrish dubs “calling attention to it” — Stand for

Parrish said. “We reinforce positive behavior.”

Realizing that its initial name—“The Anti-Bullying Coalition” was having the unintentional effect of emphasizing the very concept of bullying, so in an anti-Voldemort-like move, the organization changed its name and its web URL to the new, empowering name which is also a directive for youth — “Stand for Kind.”

It’s a message that’s “much better to come, student to student, versus counselor to student,” Parrish said. “A student can see another student sitting by themselves, we encourage them to go sit with them, to let them know they are wanted.” With this as its model, the nonprofit instructs K-12 students — nearly 300,000 across the state — about how to combat bullying through kindness.

“This is just one event, but it’s a very good event,” he told the City Journals.

“People appreciate that and support it.”

Parrish is right. The 128 golfers comprising 32 foursomes raised $50,000 for Stand for Kind.

All who enjoyed what the Stand for Kind public relations team deemed “a sunny West Valley City morning” were winners in terms of a great day for golf. Individual winners were determined in categories including “longest drive,” “straightest drive,” “closest to the hole,” and the “hole-in-one” completion.

The Larry H. Miller Dealerships even put up a Toyota SUV to anyone landing a hole-in-one. Sadly, would-be SUV drivers will have to up their drives to land the ace.

There’s always next year, kind golfers.

More than 30,000 incidents and nearly 20,000 incidents of cyber-bullying are, slowly, but surely getting drowned out by what Stand for Kind reports as more than 900,000 identified, “random acts of kindness,” said Pam Hayes, director of the Stand for Kind organization.

Stand for Kind is having immediate, traceable impact. “We were able to prevent 55 suicides,” reported Hayes. Her message to those participating in the May 31 golf tournament, the second annual such event, is: “We will do even more.”

“A lot of people like to play golf and a lot of people like to do good and contribute… so why not combine the two?”

Parrish said.

Three Sandy City Council members to retire, with 54 years of combined experience

he Sandy City Council will have a very different look next year.

The council’s three longest-serving members, Chris McCandless, Linda Martinez-Saville and Steve Fairbanks, are all retiring and taking 54 combined years of experience with them.

“It is sad to think that I’m not going to be here,” said Martinez-Saville, who has been on the council for 24 years.

Besides the obvious reason to retire (spending more time with family, enjoying retirement, etc.), all three council members referred to increased incivility within the city government as a reason for their decision.

“Often the negative statements have been personal, rather than issue oriented, and in many cases, uninformed or categorically false,” McCandless said in announcing his retirement earlier this year. “Such negative statements become a small rock in the ‘backpack’ of every elected official that he or she gets to carry — 24/7.”

A written statement provided by Fairbanks to the Sandy Journal said, “Regrettably, we have started to see the rancor that maligns our national politics descend to the city level, wherein people find it necessary to pair disagreement with discourtesy.”

Martinez-Saville said she’s done her best to not get involved in inter-governmental drama but that she has been disappointed by what’s going on in the city.

However, McCandless said his primary goal in his last six months will be to ease the tensions that have existed between the council and administration.

The councilmembers said their impending retirement has not affected the way they handle business.

“Traditionally people that are signing out want to vote for tax increases and do things that aren’t necessarily popular,” said McCandless, who voted against such a tax increase.

Martinez-Saville did vote for a possible tax increase, but not because she’s retiring, she said.

“It’s about doing whatever is best for the people,” she said.

Of the four remaining members, all but one are in their first term. Maren Barker was elected in 2015, and faces re-election this year. Zach Robinson and Brooke Christensen were elected in 2017. The most experienced council membrer will be Kris Nicholl, who was elected in 2012.

tell whether the city suffers from the loss of so much institutional knowledge from the council at one time.

“I’ve been involved not only with this city council but multiple city and county councils in my career and there’s no question that the cities with younger, newer city councils suffer. There’s a learning curve. Everyone goes through it,” he said.

Fairbanks said he’s been impressed by the council’s youngest members, Robinson and Christensen. “They dove right in and started learning,” he said about their first two years.

With four council chairs up for grabs this election, and three of them without an incumbent, this November’s election has the potential to significantly alter the makeup of the council.

Waterford graduate launches Career Rocketto to answer questions about college, careers

T

his summer, as many high school graduates enroll in college courses, a few of them will have a better idea of which ones to take, thanks to recent Waterford School graduate William Cheng.

At the High School Utah Entrepreneur Challenge, sponsored by the University of Utah Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute and Zions Bank, Cheng’s idea of a Career Rocket blasted away from the others, giving him a second place finish and $5,000 to continue with his project — and those first four students who tested his concept are a step ahead of their peers.

Career Rocket is a counseling platform where students call and are connected with industry experts who mentor them about possible future careers and college courses needed. The cost is $10 for a 30-minute call.

“Teenagers don’t like to reach out to people, some don’t know how, most just want to avoid contact, so Career Rocket is the middle man, a way to simplify the process,” Cheng said.

Cheng said he got the idea about one year ago when he attended an entrepreneurship camp in San Francisco. His group brainstormed and realized many were disappointed in their high school counseling experience and had wanted to talk to professionals in the industry, but their counselors didn’t have

lenge student director Kearsa Hodgson was impressed with the finalists.

“The teams this year showed exemplary drive and passion throughout all their ideas,” she said. “They identified problems in the community around them and were proactive in developing innovative solutions. It is amazing to see what students can accomplish.”

Cheng was named one of the top 20 finalists, for which he received $100. At the spring showcase, he presented his idea in front of judges as well as to the public.

“It was good practice for me, as I want to own my own business, to pitch in front of nice, tough judges and market myself. I’ve debated for four years, but this is a different sort of animal. These judges are entrepreneurs and influential in the field,” he said. “I see this as a stepping stone for my own company, probably something in technology. I’m looking for the right opportunity and may not know it until it’s right in front of me.”

In the meantime, Cheng, who plans to study business at University of Pennsylvania this fall, will reinvest his winnings into Career Rocket and slowly unveil it across the country.

“In time, I’d like to offer free calls to some low-income students and build up both our contacts and our students,” he said. “It was my idea and I’ve spent a lot of time on it, so I’d like to keep it running and expand to help students make those contacts to help them in their careers.” l

Blessed Sacrament young archeologists make a lasting impact

T

his summer, about 25 Blessed Sacrament students will be getting fresh air and exercise for hours at a time, but not by riding their bicycles or shooting hoops. Rather these youngsters will be helping the Utah Rock Art Research Association locate and identify Native American artifacts.

Already this school year, the group has traveled to sites west of Utah Lake several times as well as in Fremont State Park and Nine Mile Canyon, preserving rock art.

“We’re working with the National Park Service, BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and URARA in an effort to get young people out to help preserve and conserve rock art as a pilot program with the URARA,” fifthgrade teacher John McHugh said. “The kids are doing real archeology work as entry-level archeologists.”

The association has a mission to study, research and preserve the value of rock art as well as understand and enjoy rock art sites.

McHugh said the pilot program was made possible with his archeology background and having connections with archeologists in the field. He began by introducing

an after-school club at his school to teach them about petroglyphs and pictographs.

“I thought I’d have six or seven kids join just to see rock art, but it springboarded and we have 25 kids who want to go in the field to sift artifacts. It’s definitely not a typical after-school club,” he said.

McHugh also said when the federal government cut back financial support for natural resources, archeologists welcomed the youth trained to help. They also have traveled with two state archeologists and have the equivalent of one semester of college knowledge, he said.

However, these fifththrough eighth-graders, nicknamed the Blessed Sacrament Shovel Bums, don’t just don reflective vests and walk out and take a shovel to the dirt, hoping to find pieces of Native American pottery of arrowheads.

“These students have learned to read topographical maps, accurately record their coordinates with GPS devices, take compass bearings, know how to properly fill out rock art forms, sketch and photograph the rock art images to scale, all before they shovel in the

Smith Archeological Conservancy, which is north of Saratoga Springs. They can identify the kinds of rock, how old the patina is, and everything needed to know about rock art panels. The site is amazing, with about 300 panels, some of the oldest in Utah,” McHugh said.

During the school year, from late August to November and again in the spring, the Blessed Sacrament Shovel Bums spent about four hours “standing in the exact footprints of Native Americans.”

“The kids love it and it has become special to them; it’s become a part of them,” he said. “Their young souls give new perspective, fresh eyes as they are immersed in it.

They know that an atlatl, for example, dates pre-100 AD and a bow and arrow will be after that. They can date arrowheads and know which culture used it as well as what animal they were hunting with it. These kids understand and respect sacred sites and now have a deep passion for Native American culture expressed in rock art,” he said.

Some pieces the students excavated, with permission last fall in Nine Mile Canyon, they cleaned and cataloged at Utah State University Eastern Prehistoric Museum in Price this spring, after consulting a Native American elder and BLM archeologist.

In the fall, two students, sixth-grader

Alison Green and seventh-grader Isabella Pickers, presented their group’s findings and appreciation of rock art at the URARA Symposium, which was held in Bluffdale.

“Their energy and passion were off the charts,” McHugh said.

This summer, in addition to continuing to record prehistoric rock art sites at the Smith Archaeological Conservancy for the State Historic Preservation Office, the Shovel Bums planned to visit an undocumented prehistoric summer solstice rock art site near Vernal with the BLM. The club also will receive the American Rock Art Research Association’s Education Award in Flagstaff in mid-June, which comes with a $500 check to support future research ventures.

McHugh has been teaching 27 years, but it wasn’t until recently he began at Blessed Sacrament.

“I’ve found private schools will welcome extra curriculum and I know from my background, Catholic schools enforce good behavior so the combination has allowed me to share my passion and knowledge, knowing the kids will be both helpful and respectful,” he said. “We begin with rock art etiquette, but they are the ones appreciating and preserving rock art for future generations.” l

Career day speakers tell Jordan High students to follow their passion

efore Jordan High senior Jeddy Bennett graduated as valedictorian of his class in June, he attended Jordan High’s Career Day. “It provides an opportunity for students to learn about fields they may be interested in pursuing and answers about what they do,” he said. “That firsthand overview of their job and learning from their experience may help us as we decide what careers we may want to do.”

That may prove invaluable, Canyons School District Superintendent Jim Briscoe said.

“This gives students a different type of education, a purpose, so they have a better sense of what they need to study and why,” he said. “This gives students a flavor of what they think they want to do. It helps them to connect to people in the field and learn from them. It could save them thousands of dollars and time if they discover now it’s not what they want to do rather then after a year of college or training.”

“I love the manufacturing side of business and when I had the opportunity to go into medical devices, I jumped because it is my passion,” he said. “Medical devices helped my grandmother and mom and I’m grateful.”

Chef Vaughn Hobbs also followed his passion.

“I get to get up every morning and get to do my hobby every day,” he told students.

“I get do what I love and get to be paid for it. There was a lot of learning, but I get paid well as an executive chef.”

Hobbs, who has been a television chef on channels 4 and 13, also has a YouTube following.

“It’s great to be proactive and promote yourself. Everyone needs to know how to market themselves,” he said.

He answered students’ questions from how he got started — first working at JC Penney’s café at age 14 before joining the ProStart chef program in high school — to why there are 100 pleats in a chef’s hat — dating back to the 16th century, he said the toque was folded to represent the number of ways a chef knows to cook eggs.

District Career Technical Education Coordinator Patti Larkin said many students learned about jobs on career day.

“It’s been eye-opening for many of our students to connect with jobs they were interested in or may not have known about,” she said. “The career fair also gave students a chance to get a summer job on the spot.” l

Love of art unifies Brookwood Elementary community

atercolors, play dough, storytelling, bread making, graffiti letters, pottery and more forms of art come together to create Brookwood Elementary’s eighth annual art-a-palooza.

“The students love art and they are so proud and excited to walk through the school’s gallery walk and try new forms of art tonight,” parent volunteer event organizer Abby Pohlman said. “This event is more a sense of community where we all come together to support the arts and our school.”

While much of art-a-palooza is a “finetuned machine,” as Pohlman said, this year, families did have a chance to try something new: put tickets in for a teacher experience raffle. These ranged from learning about Japan through origami and writing Japanese to attending a Junie B. Jones party to learning Mancala and participating in a tournament.

“We realized this would be a fun way for students to learn something new or get to know their teachers more,” she said.

The profits from ticket sales as well as about 100 items from the silent auction and from a bake sale all are earmarked to support Brookwood programs, such as debate, math Olympiad and others, Pohlman said.

About $11,000 was made at the event last year.

technology, engineering and math — supplies, science fair, spelling bee “and many events students love.”

“So much of what we do comes from funding from art-a-palooza; everyone responds to it so well,” Rich said. “And it’s a fun night, our biggest night of the year, with an incredible number of families turning out — and PTA does all of it. Our students showcase their work in the gallery walk and have a chance to be super creative in art stations tonight.”

Art-a-palooza began in 2011 by Channa Vyfvinkel after Canyons School District asked schools to focus on the arts during the

month of January. As the event continued, it was moved to later in the school year so outside art activities could be included.

“This event has grown every year and every teacher comes to help and we have amazing parents who offer their talents and time to introduce new projects to students,” Vyfinkel said in 2014.

For Chris Garff, who came with first-grader Isabel, it was remarkable.

“This is great; I’m impressed,” Garff said about the deep sea dive “glowing” experience. “My daughter made an amazing jellyfish.”

Professional storyteller Connie Crayk, who has told stories at the famed Timpanogos Storytelling Festival, taught students about folktales from Russia, Germany, England and other places.

“So much literature comes from folktales,” she said. “And every folktale has a good moral, one which we can learn from.”

Hailey Watanabe attended art-a-palooza for the third time.

“I like to come because there are so many things to look at and do,” she said, adding that second-grader Graeme Anderson already tried play dough and sword balloon flighting. “It’s a chance for everyone to come together and to support the school.”

Two years after retirement, Debbie Stoker still is going strong, supporting the school by teaching the popular bread-making session.

“I’ve learned how to bake 30 loaves in three hours, and people who come get into learning the art of bread making,” said the former fifth- and sixth-grade teacher. “My hobby has actually become beneficial.”

Meaning she has helped pay for cancer treatments for family members, baking and selling more than 1,300 loaves. Now, once again, she sold her loaves to benefit students at her former school. l

Disease. It is a hard thing to watch them suffer, so we decided that we wanted to raise money for Alzheimer’s research,” said Kathy Sorenson, Community Relations Director for the Salt Lake City and West Jordan Visiting Angels locations.

Sorenson and the rest of the staff organized a series of lip sync battles called Singing for a Cure. They held them at care centers around the valley where many of their clients live. “We help a lot of clients who are in their homes or choose to age in place. But many of them are also at assisted living centers. So we worked with their centers and got them to host the lip sync events,” said Sorenson.

Lip sync spots were open to anyone, and many of the Visiting Angels clients got involved in addition to the staff. “There was a sign-up fee for each team. Then we also had a drawing we sold tickets to. Businesses around the valley had donated gifts and services. People could buy a ticket, and then we drew winners during the lip sync shows. We raised a lot of money and it was a blast!” Sorenson said.

“One hundred percent of the money we raised went to fund research for things like

earlier detection. We see the hardships this disease presents for our clients, and we want to help,” said Sorenson.

Projects like Singing for a Cure are just one of the ways that Visiting Angels stands out from the crowd when it comes to senior care. “We can be available to provide one hour of care, or 24-hour care. We help with medication reminders, personal hygiene, showering, bathing, grocery shopping, meals and light housework – whatever is needed,” said Sorenson.

“So many people want to continue to live at home as they age, and with a little bit of help, they can,” said Sorenson.

The office located on 4095 S. Highland Dr. serves Salt Lake City and the surrounding communities, and has recently won three major awards. They were reviewed by a third-party reviewer called Home Care Pulse.

It included satisfaction ratings of clients and caregivers.

“We are proud to say we were awarded the ‘Best of Home Care: Leader in Excellence’ award for 2019. This is a difficult award to win as it requires us to have 12 months of high scores in 14 different catego-

ries,” said Sorenson.

“In addition, we were also awarded the ‘Provider of Choice’ and ‘Employer of Choice’ awards. There were only five awards given total for Utah, and we won three of those five,” said Sorenson.

Often, insurance doesn’t cover the cost of personal in home care, however, Visiting Angels does accept some forms of insurance.

“If the client is a veteran or the spouse of veteran, they can use the Aid in Attendance veterans benefit to pay for services. Veterans might not be aware of that benefit, but they have served their countries and they do have benefits,” Sorenson said.

Another option is long term care insurance. “For clients who have been able to plan ahead and have purchased long term care insurance, that can be used to cover the cost of our services,” Sorenson said.

SheTech encourages female students to enter STEM careers

ov. Gary Herbert recently addressed a ballroom full of teenage girls and wanted to make sure one thing was clear: their future is bright with STEM careers.

At the SheTech conference, more than 150 science, technology, engineering and mathematics companies and colleges shared hands-on activities from robotics to auto tech to 3D gaming to technology entrepreneurship opportunities with female high school students from every county in the state.

Herbert gave the keynote address.

“We are in the middle of a technology explosion in the state,” he said. “Utah is recognized as the most technologically advanced state in America today. Women in technology is the next explosion, which you’re a part of.”

Herbert shared with SheTech participants that women in technological roles are on the rise.

“We are moving in the right direction.

There are no limits, no ceiling; nothing but opportunities,” he said.

Spearheaded by Angela Trego with the support of Women Tech Council and Utah Valley University, SheTech is a chance for women to learn about opportunities in the field.

“Technology is driving Utah’s economy,” she said. “We can’t get enough people in Utah to fill Utah jobs. We need to get girls in the field to fill jobs. Women working in teams in the workforce in the field improves diversity, allows projects to be looked at in different ways, and bottom line, brings success. Gov. Herbert understands the issue and is being a leader in making a change in placing more women in these positions.”

When Trego was a student, she was the only female Ph.D. candidate in the mechanical engineering field and lacked a female mentor.

“I realized what could help is to have opportunities where girls can be inspired and understood by women role models in the field to show them, they aren’t the only ones. These women can have mentors and engage these students, showing them how they can be successful in their careers,” said Trego, who is president of Trego Engineering as well as vice president of Women Tech Council.

When SheTech began five years ago, Trego said she was “laughed at and told no girls would come.” That first year, 2014, 250 teens attended.

This year, 2,500 female high school students took part in Utah and SheTech conferences have sprung up in neighboring states of Idaho and Colorado. It also helped inspire STEMFest for elementary and junior high students.

Copper Hills physics teacher Marissa Beck knew about SheTech, but she wasn’t able to attend until this year.

“I’ve always wanted to know what it is all about and thought it was really import-

ant to know and talk to professionals in the fields,” she said. “There aren’t many women in the physical science field. This inspires students to realize they are smart enough to enter into a STEM career and shows them women are already successful in the science fields.”

Hillcrest High took a busload of 33 students, Work-Based Learning Facilitator Cher Burbank said.

“This is a good opportunity for them to be inspired about what they want to do, check it out and talk to other women in the field,” she said.

Hillcrest High senior Lillian Rose said she learned what was happening in the tech industry from robotics to medical education.

“It’s really cool to see what is happening right here in Utah,” she said.

Her classmate Julie Ashby learned how to build websites, which she said would be helpful for her future as she enters a field possibly in business and marketing.

Three home school teenagers, Makenna Eagle, Grace Parish and Elizabeth Oldham, were eager to explore SheTech.

“It’s hard to understand technology and how it all works, but I know it’s all going to be impactful in my future, so it’s a good introduction to what all is out there,” she said.

However, some exhibits introduced fun ways to learn about science. For example, West Hills ninth-graders Alisa Hernandez and Brayden Walter learned about the equations of equilibrium through stacking Pringle potato chips in a circular pattern.

Murray High sophomore Natalie Pehrson, who may explore an engineering degree, took workshops in 3D graffiti and virtual reality, but also learned about air cannons and logic puzzles.

Taylorsville senior Jasmin Romero learned about virtual reality and medical equipment, and was excited to see a Tesla.

Oakdale awarded digital safety grant from National PTA, Facebook

irst-grader Lewis Higginson came to Oakdale Elementary one spring night.

“I’m learning more about how to be safe on the internet,” he said, adding that he does homework games online.

Joining him was his fourth-grade brother, Miles, who likes to do coding and Scratch, and his mother, Natalie.

“I want to have to become more conscious and aware of digital responsibility,” she said. “It’s something we talk about often — weekly, daily — we can’t assume they know, but we have to give them the tools to help.”

The Higginson family was hoping to learn from Oakdale’s digital safety community event, which was funded by a $1,000 grant from the National PTA and Facebook. Oakdale was one of 200 school PTAs nationwide selected to receive the grant through the PTA Connected initiative.

The internet night not only brought families together, but also educational, governmental and community leaders.

U.S. Representative John Curtis pointed out that Oakdale lies in District 3, the youngest in the United States, with an average age of 26, and many are fluent in technology. He said it is important that youth learn how to be safe online.

State representative Steve Eliason encouraged parents to “hang out with your kid, ask your kid questions and learn what they’re experiencing as they work their screens.”

While many students use devices for homework, others may find it a way to communicate with grandparents across the country. He encouraged parents to learn what their children are doing as it may not be just playing games, he said.

“It’s about balance. Kids use phones, laptops, tablets a lot. It’s a way to communicate today, but it still means we need to keep our eyes open,” Eliason said.

He also encouraged families to download the SafeUT app, which provides real-time crisis intervention to youth through texting and a confidential tip program. He said it has proven to save lives as well as be used to report acts of kindness.

“We don’t always know the impact children have — both good and ill — as technology is developing as we’re learning. But we can teach our children how to behave online and use technology to protect our children,” Eliason

Board of Education Vice President Amber Shill supported the event.

“It needs to be a constant discussion for parents and kids to discuss internet safety,” she said, adding that her own family recently talked about internet safety and screen time at the dinner table. “The more information people know, the better.”

Principal Lori Jones said representatives from National PTA and Facebook offered to come lead a panel discussion before breakout sessions. The discussion brought up determining the proper amount of screen time, which could be done by a family media con-

tract.

Families also learned about a bullying prevention hub that could be a resource for those seeking support and help in issues related to bullying and other conflicts; a parent portal with tips and links to help learn about Facebook; a youth portal to guide students about Facebook privacy and safety information from peers their own age; safety on Facebook while connecting with friends and family; and a digital literacy library to help youth build skills needed to safely use digital technology.

Classmates hold art auction to help fellow Altara student recover from bike accident

A

ltara Elementary student Breck Anderson returned to attend the last two weeks of school part time with his classmates — thankfully.

“I don’t remember a thing, but I know I got a few scratches and am still trying to catch up from being gone from school,” he said.

But on March 17, 10-year-old Breck suffered more than a few scratches. After being hit by a pick-up truck while riding his bicycle near the school, there was a search for his identity since the youngster didn’t have his name with him.

After his principal, Nicole Svee Magann, identified him and contact was made with his family, Breck was treated at Primary Children’s Hospital for a fractured skull and was placed in a medically induced coma to reduce swelling on his brain. He also suffered a broken wrist and a punctured left lung.

Breck’s classmates, neighbors and community recently rallied behind him. Organized by second-grade teacher Heather Sullivan, a student art auction was held in late May, coinciding with the school’s new mascot reveal. The art auction’s proceeds were earmarked to help with Breck’s medical needs.

Debbie Godfrey, along with her brother and sister, came to support not only her sec-

ond-grade nieces, but to support Breck with purchasing about $250 worth of student artwork, including a piece which was given to Breck.

“I don’t know him, but with his accident and medical bills, he needs everyone’s help,” she said.

Sullivan said blank canvases were given to students in the school.

“This allowed all the kids a chance to be super creative, to celebrate the arts and to show their support for Breck,” she said.

Another message — to wear bicycle helmets — was shared. Breck’s helmet was purchased the day before his accident and the emergency room nurse credits it to saving his life, Svee Magann said.

Breck was excited to listen to the school’s orchestra perform, check out the art and make a purchase at the book fair, where profits were to be given to his family.

“I’ve had to be inside a lot with my condition of my brain, but I like graphic novels so I can read,” he said.

By the end of the evening, more than $1,000 was collected for Breck, with more contributions expected from food truck proceeds.

Students also got a chance to paint on 45 records and play games as well as get a chance to see the school’s new mascot.

Student paintings were made available by silent auction with proceeds earmarked to help Altara Elementary student Breck Anderson’s medical bills after he spent two months hospitalized after a bicycle-vehicle accident.

“It’s cool,” he said. “There’s a whole new look to the logo.”

However, student Braelyee Pierson wasn’t so sure about it.

“It’s more like we’re named after the place in North Carolina or like we’re flight attendants,” she said. “But this was a fun night with the orchestra concert, book fair and all the art.” l

Family Learning Center ceremony celebrates a different kind of graduate

J

adyra Lara moved from Honduras to Utah when she was 14, but she never learned to speak English — until this past year.

“I’ve gone to class every single day,” Lara said about attending Midvale Elementary’s Family Learning Center English instruction. “I speak so-so; the verbs are hard. I want to learn more English so I can help my children, help in their classes and be able to go shopping.”

Lara was one of about 75 students who were honored May 30 at the Family Learning Center Recognition Program.

The Family Learning Centers, which began in Canyons School District in 2011, are housed in the district’s four Title I elementary schools and provide educational classes and training as well as resources to parents to support learning in the home. Many parents who attend classes immigrated from Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Nepal, Guatemala, China, Ghana, Honduras and other countries.

Jose Borjon, consulate of Mexico in Salt Lake City, congratulated about 15 parents who received their Plazas Comunitarias with a diploma from the Mexican education system.

“This is very valuable for parents to be actively studying and engaged in learning,” he said. “It’s good you come to work, to prosper, to help your family grow and learn.”

Plazas Comunitarias serves as a transitional program for Hispanic-speaking adults to learn English and take adult basic education classes, establishing an academic foundation for them to finish their elementary and secondary education in Spanish.

Borjon also presented a check for $1,200 to Canyons School District to continue supporting the program.

Director of Student Advocacy and Access Karen Sterling said these parents who are learning English will have strengths to support their students in both their native language as well as in English.

English, and parents are needing to learn English to support their students,” Sterling said.

Sterling congratulated parents for demonstrating a great mindset in wanting to learn more and being role models as students for their children.

As a result of parents learning and becoming more active in their children’s school, students have better attendance, make greater progress learning English and reading, and score higher on standardized tests, she said.

Children of the graduates ran to hug their parents and stand by them as the auditorium erupted in applause. Even 2-year-old Airam Noemi Mendoza, dressed in a traditional costume, held signs congratulating her mother, Alejandra Mendoza, on her accomplishments.

The evening also included the Heart of Canyons Community Schools award presentation to Baraa Arkawazi.

Arkawazi, who is from Turkey, was asked by East Midvale administrators to help translate for a shy student who had just moved to Utah and was struggling to fit in.

Every day for five years, Arkawazi came to help that student and others while improving her English as well.

Arkawazi earned her GED and decided to work for Canyons School District. However, before she could begin, she had to take a test. It took nearly one year and 22 attempts to pass, but when she did, she was celebrated

by East Midvale Elementary students and became a school aide.

“We celebrate Baraa for her determination, perseverance and setting the pathway, an example, for our community,” said Shelley McCall, East Midvale community school facilitator.

Several parents are grateful for their Family Learning Center education.

“We all are able to connect to schools, to become familiar faces with teachers and become contributors to our school community,” Family Learning Center student Rosairo Figueroa said.

Board of education member Mont Millerberg appreciates the impact Family Learning Centers have on students and the community.

Sandy City rolls out glass recycling and electric vehicle charging stations

andy City is going green.

In the month of June, the city rolled out two new services available to Sandy residents who want to be a little more environmentally friendly: glass recycling bins and 45 new electric vehicle charging stations.

For the glass recycling, Sandy City is contracting with local company Momentum Recycling to give residents the option of adding a glass recycling bin for their home.

Picked up once a month, the service costs $8 per month and can be paid through residents’ regular city utility bill.

The service includes pickup reminders through call, email or text notifications so you don’t miss the one pick-up day each month.

Within the first few weeks of being available, Sandy Deputy Mayor Evelyn Everton said over 500 people signed up, a sign, she said, that this is a service that’s been in high demand among Sandy residents.

Those who are interested in enrolling in the service can sign up at utah.momentumrecycling.com/sandy/.

The city also opened 45 new electric vehicle charging stations throughout the city.

River Oaks Golf Course, the charging stations will make it a lot easier for drivers of electric vehicles to find a place to charge up.

Funding for the new charging stations comes entirely from outside the city. As soon as Mayor Kurt Bradburn took office, he made finding grants for these charging stations a

top priority, said Everton.

Rocky Mountain Power provided over $300,000 for the stations and $25,000 came from UCAIR, a statewide clean air partnership. $118,000 also came from a settlement with Volkswagen after the company was caught cheating emissions tests. (The set-

tlement “requires Volkswagen to invest $2 billion in zero emission vehicle charging infrastructure and in the promotion of ZEVs” throughout the country, according to the EPA.) “On behalf of Sandy City we really want to thank our partners,” said Bradburn during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the chargers at City Hall. “One of the things we harp on in our administration is one of the only ways we’re going to get things done is through public-private partnerships and bringing great ideas together from both the private sector and the government sector.”

The chargers were free to use through the month of June, after which they charge 20 cents per kilowatt hour for the normal chargers, and 25 cents per kilowatt hour for the fast chargers, which can fully charge an electric vehicle in one hour.

Everton said the city’s environmental efforts reflect one of Sandy residents’ top priorities.

“We’re all living in the Salt Lake Valley. We’re all aware of the air quality issues,” she said. “It’s a concern for all of us when we walk outside and we see the smog. It’s a deterrent for people and companies to move here. We all just need to do our part to contribute to cleaning up the air.” l

ummer’s a gardener’s dream. There’s tilling and weeding and snipping and getting your hands dirty in God’s green earth.

Here are things that give me hives: tilling, weeding, snipping, getting my hands dirty.

For someone who LOVES meditation, you’d think gardening would be a slam dunk, and every year I TRY REALLY HARD to fall in love with planting flowers and communing with the weeds growing in the driveway cracks. But I can’t do it.

My husband is enthralled with all things horticulturey. As soon as grass is visible under the melting snow, he’s counting the days until he can get out in the yard to shape the shrubbery and tame the flower beds. There were even tears in his eyes as he watched our little granddaughter blow dandelion seeds all over the backyard. He was so touched.

This man who’s so impatient he can’t drive to Harmons without yelling at a dozen drivers is suddenly in the flower bed, calmly pulling one small weed at a time. He spends HOURS grooming our gnarled landscaping.

Whereas, I, can sit in silence for a long time (just ask him), but yard work pisses me off.

I get agitated, short-tempered and grumpy each time he drags me outside to help.

He’ll make pleasant conversation while we’re weeding and it’s all I can do to not snip his pinky finger off with gardening shears.

Hubbie: It’s so wonderful to work outside.

Me: Nope.

Hubbie: Why are you so crabby?

Me: *sharpening my garden shovel* I’ll chip away for 30 minutes with my pick axe to plant a petunia, or use some C-4 to blast a spot for geraniums. I break three fingernails, bruise my knees, tangle my headphones in the barberry bush, make up new swear words and jump 27 times as earthworms wriggle out of the dirt, scaring the bejewels out of me.

There’re also spiders dropping down my shirt, ants crawling up my pants, bees buzzing around my eyeballs and millipedes tap dancing across the back of my hand. Good grief, Mother Nature, get a grip!

It wouldn’t be so bad if everything would just COOPERATE. If I could pull weeds once and be done, that would be great.

If every flower grew back every summer, I’d be so happy. Just, nature is so unreliable!

We have a tree that goes into shock each summer and sends shooters sprouting up all over the lawn. It’s so sneaky. How can you trust something that tries to clone itself every time you turn around? We contacted a tree therapist since our aspen obviously had some unaddressed PTSD. We were told to plant a friend for our tree. Now we have a freakedout tree and a BFF shrub who doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything.

He tracks the effectiveness/frequency of our sprinklers. He’s excited to buy fertilizer.

My idea of yard work is pulling my pants up to my armpits, sitting on the porch with a cold drink and a novel, and yelling at teenage hoodlums to get off my lawn.

I really do appreciate all his hard work.

I’m truly glad he finds gardening therapeutic.

I really hope he never expects me to prune the rose bush.
