s a cheerleader at Riverton High School, senior Hailey Butterfield can relate to how Simone Biles was feeling at the Olympics this summer when her mental health affected her performance.

“If you can't take a tumbling pass correctly, it just messes with your head,” Butterfield said. “And if you don’t stick it right then you can hurt yourself, and that's kind of scary. So if you don't stick it a couple times in a row, the stress gets to you.”

Fortunately, Butterfield took a sports psychology class last year at RHS and learned relaxation techniques that help athletes before, during and after a performance as well as how to deal with fear, anxiety and stage fright.

A few weeks before the state cheerleading competition, Butterfield had learned about meditation and visualization in the class and was able to apply the strategies.

“I separated myself, and I did meditation,” she said. “I visualized us hitting our whole routine. And we did really good, so it definitely helped. I saw a difference between our region competition and our state competition.”

Continued from front page Her sports psychology teacher, Steve Galley, was a basketball coach for almost 25 years. Galley knows high school coaches can’t provide the mental health support that professionals have access to, so the sports psychology class, which RHS resumed teaching last year, is a great resource.

“I want to help all the other coaches, and their players and their performers to be able to deal better with some of this mental health stuff,” Galley said. “I try to give these kids some practical tools to help them to get an edge on performance and also to help them deal with some of these mental health issues that may be causing some obstacles for them or giving them some trouble.”

The sports psychology class isn't just for athletes-- musicians and actors have also benefited from the class’s relaxation and visualization exercises.

“A softball player may be doing visualization that deals with hitting, and you might have somebody that does drama who is visualizing the actual acting process,” Galley said.

“These are skills that crossover into just about any activity or profession or vocation. You can use visualization for anything--to help prepare for a difficult meeting, a talk in church or for a marriage proposal.”

Kwan Ki Au, who also teaches sessions of the class, said students learn important life skills such as confidence, staying calm so they can solve problems when they are faced with adversity, and being resilient instead of becoming overwhelmed.

In addition to mental strategies, students focus on practical applications of physical habits that affect performance, including sleep, nutrition and hydration.

“We really want them to experiment with and learn different techniques and things that they can try in their own sport or performance activity,” Galley said.

Students keep a sleep diary and track the effects of optimal hydration and then report on the effect these routines have on their performance. Galley said students are amazed by how much these often underestimated habits have an impact on their physical and mental performance, both inside and outside the classroom.

Au, a RHS football coach, said he noticed the four football players who took the sports psychology class last year had more buy-in to the team workouts. They had learned, through a class assignment testing various workouts, the reasons supporting them.

techniques that they do and so they've been a lot more focused in the workouts,” Au said. “Our guys have been able to gain confidence because they've understood how to prepare better.”

Au saw the same confidence in his students who were part of the RHS girls softball team that won the state championship this spring. They told Au that the relaxation and focus techniques they learned in his class helped them feel more calm while at bat and to recover mentally after a bad play.

“They were able to use some of those techniques to get resettled, recentered and refocused in their performance again and the results were they got to the state championship, despite some adversity,” Au said.

Hayden Walker took the class last year because he wanted to have a memorable senior year with the cross country team.

“I feel like any sport is a lot easier and you're able to more fully enjoy it and get the most out of it if you have a

good mentality,” he said. “I took the class as a way to get better and be able to perform to what I saw as my highest potential.”

During his sophomore and junior years, he was nervous and less confident and his race times were sporadic. In the sports psychology class, he learned the visualizing, breathing and relaxation techniques to help him feel mentally prepared for his meets. During his senior year, he was relaxed and able to enjoy his cross country meets.

“After taking the class, I would go into a race already having visualized me performing the way I wanted to,” Walker said. “And so my performance started going up a lot more because I wasn't only more confident, but because I had already done it and seen it in my mind.”

Walker’s times consistently improved and he qualified for state and then nationals at a higher seating than expected.

Inspired by the confidence and skills he gained in the class, he is currently training to complete an ironman challenge.l

Summit Academy says hola to new language immersion program

“Ultimately, it really does become a part of the fabric of the school, where you're involving everybody,” she said. “So, we're not just blessing the lives of half our students. That culture lives in, and is vibrant in, the whole school.”

All students and their families will be invited to activities throughout the year which highlight Latino culture, holidays and traditions.

“This is just the beginning of these pro-

grams, so I want everyone at school to be involved in the dual immersion program and part of it is just knowing a little bit about our culture and the traditions we have,” Giraldo said.

Giraldo said the administration and staff at Summit Academy has been amazingly supportive. Currently, she is the only DLI teacher.

A new teacher will be added each year as the program continues to grow—one grade at a time—through twelfth grade.

You sing songs, said Laura Giraldo, the teacher of the first students in Summit Academy’s Bluffdale campus’ new Spanish immersion program.

She will introduce the first graders, who have no experience with Spanish, to a new language by bridging their knowledge in English to Spanish through creative and engaging activities, including music.

“We're going to start with the first sounds, and with a lot of songs, and pictures everywhere--just trying to find a common ground, things that are easy for them to relate to,” Giraldo said.

Giraldo will teach songs in Spanish, most of which students already know in English.

“They can start creating these bridges in their brains because they already know this song, they just need to learn the new vocabulary,” Giraldo said.

Dual Language Immersion students will spend half the day immersed in the Spanish classroom and the other half in an English classroom. For the majority of the students, this immersion experience is their first exposure to Spanish. The first few weeks of class will focus on fun and phonics as students get familiar with the sounds of the new language.

More complex language skills, such as writing, will be added later, once they have some confidence in the language.

Giraldo is confident that students will pick up the new language quickly. Her own children were ages 6 and 2 when they moved to Utah from Venezuela. She saw how, after only a few months of being exposed to English all day at school, they became fluent in their new language. Giraldo has also taught in the DLI program at the secondary level.

“I know what kids are capable of doing when they are exposed to dual language,” she said. “It's amazing the things that they can accomplish. They just are more secure. Their brain works hard because they need to relate everything to their native language, but they can learn so fast. I'm totally sure that in a couple of months my students will be able to understand what I'm saying.”

Summit Academy Principal Diana Brantley is thrilled to host the program; she has seen the benefits for students who participate in the German dual immersion program which she helped establish at Summit Academy’s Independence campus. She saidit helps students academically to be more cognitively flexible and culturally, it expands their perspective.

“We need to be more culturally aware of other people and different ideas-- children who are raised with that tend to show more positive attitudes towards other cultures, as well as a deeper appreciation of their own,” she said.

“We owe it to them to help them understand that the world is diverse. And so being able to help them broaden that horizon when they're young, I think, is invaluable.”

Healing Field Flag Memorial marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11 attacks

O

n the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, Al Qaeda terrorists aboard three hijacked passenger planes carried out attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. A fourth plane crashed into a Pennsylvania field after crew and passengers attempted to take control of the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks that shocked the nation and became the deadliest foreign assault on U.S. soil.

The country crumbled for a bleak moment as friends, family and loved ones became engulfed with despair. Yet, just as quickly as those were lost, America unwaveringly transformed into the proud and strong “United We Stand.”

“Twenty years ago, on Sept. 11, 2001, three determined firemen managed to raise the American flag on a mangled flagpole amid the vast destruction at ground zero,” said Paul Swenson, president of the Colonial Flag Foundation Board of Trustees. “Within 24 hours, individuals across the country saw the first sign of hope rising from the ashes. From that powerful image of hope and strength, woven in the Stars and Stripes, came the inspiration for the first Healing Field display of flags.”

morial, organized by the non-profit Colonial Flag Foundation and Utah Healing Field Committee, will take place at the Sandy City Promenade, at 10000 Centennial Parkway, from Sept. 8-13. On Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 5:30 p.m., volunteers will post more than 3,300 flags in remembrance of the 2,977 victims of the terrorist attacks, our Utah fallen soldiers, and first responders who have died since 9/11.

On Sept.9, the field will officially open to the public. Visitors can read the personalized tags attached to the flags with each victim's name and a short bio. In addition, there will be a 14-poster exhibit from the 9/11 Memorial Museum titled “September 11th, 2001: The Day That Changed the World.”

“My hope is that each of us will slow down, walk through the flags alone or with our children and remember that day 20 years ago when we lost so many and stood together,” said Swenson.

On Sept.10, Rockin Hot Rod Productions hosts the “United We Stand” classic car show featuring local cars in the parking lot of the Aetna building at 10150 South Centennial Parkway, from 5-8 p.m..

The event will include awards, raffles, and food trucks. Following the car show will

be a “One Light, One Life” luminaria light display by Real Salt Lake. Volunteers are encouraged to arrive at 6 p.m. to help Real Salt Lake and mascot Leo the Lion place luminaries by each flag to light up the field. The tribute representslight through darkness, offering hope and healing to friends and families who lost loved ones that day.

On Sept. 11, the day’s events begin with a “Ride to Remember” motorcycle ride. Riders will meet at Barbary Coast Saloon (4242 South State Street), at 6 p.m., then proceed to Sandy City Hall with a police escort. At 7 p.m., Conner Gray Covington will conduct the Utah Symphony to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Covington states, “All of us at the Utah Symphony are honored to partner with Utah Healing Field to present a concert to commemorate the tragic events of that day.

We've chosen music that will provide a sense of comfort and healing to the audience but will also serve as a way to promote a feeling of optimism and unity moving forward.”“ The symphony will perform John Williams' “Hymn to the Fallen,” Elgar's “Nimrod” from “Enigma Variations,” Copland's “Lincoln Portrait” and Valerie Coleman's “Umoja: An Anthem for Unity.” Tickets for this performance are available at utah20th. eventbrite.com.

branch of the United States Military, including all fallen soldiers and first responders from the state of Utah. The patriotic observance includes the national anthem, a flyover by four F-35s performed by Hill Air Force Base, the presentation of the colors, a 21-gun salute, a bugle performance of “Taps,” and a performance by The Utah Pipe Band, all until 8:30 p.m.

Funds raised through donations and sales and the event will support ongoing charitable programs of the Colonial Flag Foundation. These programs include service dogs for veterans, child abuse prevention, food banks, homes for heros and homeless veterans assistance.

Two decades later, hundreds of organizations have hosted Colonial Flag Foundation programs, raising millions of dollars for local charities.

“The legacy of all these souls that were lost that day lives on through the millions of lives that are touched by those that walk among the flags and those that are assisted and uplifted through the thousands of benefiting charities,” Swenson said.

Parent volunteers are back at school

P

arent volunteers decorated the walks around Riverton Elementary with chalk art and encouraging messages to welcome students and teachers to the first day of school.

“We wanted to do something that would show our appreciation for our teachers and get our students excited about being back,” PTA President Katie Fuller said. Fuller said parents and former students helped with the PTA-sponsored activity.

Last year, COVID-19 safety precautions barred parents from coming into the school, and they could only send in supplies and support teachers from a distance. Parent volunteers are allowed back into the classrooms this year. They started helping out on the very first day of school, decorating the walks and also helping students find their new classrooms.

At nearly all schools in the district, teachers will once again have access to volunteers to help in their classrooms to work one-on-one with students with reading and math facts, prepare activity materials, chaperone field trips, and plan holiday parties.

“It will be great to get parents back into the buildings,” Midas Creek Principal Megan Cox said. “Teachers have a busy job and try their hardest to help all students make growth throughout the year. Parents are such a support in making this happen.”

With parent volunteers, and relaxed COVID-19 safety restrictions, schools will be able to resume family and community activities, as well.

One of the activities Cox is most excited to be able to hold at Midas Creek this year is the Fun Run fundraiser. It will be held Sept. 16, 5 p.m.-8 p.m.

“This brings all of the community together to eat, par-

ticipate in a color run, see teachers, and raise funds for our school,” Cox said. “Everyone loves this event and it's a great way to support the school.”

Riverton Elementary is also holding a Fun Run on Sept.

22.

Riverton Elementary’s PTA did not hold any fundraisers last year so Fuller is thrilled to be resuming them this year.

Funds raised will be used to increase the field trip budget and provide catered meals for teachers instead of providing potluck meals during parent teacher conferences.

When COVID-19 restrictions were loosened at the end of the school year last year, Riverton Elementary’s PTA was able to host a few community events and an abbreviated book fair, events that families had missed during the year. Fuller said parents appreciated being able to be involved at their child’s school again.

“I think it's really beneficial for parents to be involved in what's going on at the school,” Fuller said. “When they can come in and volunteer, they can see what's happening in the building.”

With help from parent volunteers, Riverton Elementary’s PTA will resume events such as Morning with Mom and Donuts with Dad, when parents are invited to spend the morning at the school with their kids.

“That's been a fun way to get parents involved and in the school,” Fuller said. “It's really great for everyone when parents are involved, and able to be part of the school team and to get to know the teachers and staff. It just builds a stronger community all around and having that stronger community helps our kids a ton.” l

From futbol to football: Mountain Ridge kicker makes impressive debut

W

ith just seconds remaining on the clock before the end of the first half during Mountain Ridge’s game against Olympus, Brody Laga was standing on the sideline. The team was facing a fourth down from the 31-yard line.

He assumed they would punt the ball away. After all, it would be a 48-yard field goal, a difficult distance for any kicker, let alone a kicker who had only joined the team five days earlier and kicked a football for the first time. But then he heard the coaches yell for the field goal team to take the field.

“I went out there and it was a pretty far field goal so I was like, ‘Oh! Alright! I’ve got this,’” Laga told the Herriman Journal.

So as time expired, Laga calmly kicked the 48-year field goal, which cleared the crossbar with a few feet to spare. The kick gave Mountain Ridge a 20-13 lead as they went into the locker room.

“Pretty clutch for a kicker that’s never kicked in a game before. It was very impressive,” Sentinels Head Coach Mike Meifu said after the game.

It should come as no surprise that Laga had the leg to make the kick. Last year, he played in 15 games for the school’s varsity soccer team as a freshman. He even scored three goals. This fall, he’s playing up an age division for his club team, Sparta. So what made the talented young soccer

player want to give football a try?

“You know, it’s just something to do. Make more opportunities,” he said.

That laid-back attitude towards taking up a new sport has helped Laga keep the pressure off - an important thing to do for a kicker. In fact, the only time he felt nervous at all was after he missed his first point-after attempt during warmups.

“But then I got on the field and thought, ‘What’s the worst that could happen?’ I just had to go in with a good mentality,” he said.

The approach paid off, as Laga connected on his first field goal of 25 yards. Then he added the 48-yarder and another 30-yarder in the second half. He was also 4-4 on PAT’s. Not bad for a sophomore with only five days of football experience in his entire life.

Laga said he’s been welcomed by all his new teammates, which began with them teaching him how to put on his pads. “It was great. All the guys were dressing me up like a Barbie,” he said with a laugh.

As for the brutality of the sport, Laga said he’s not worried about getting injured. On field goals he feels well-protected by his blockers.

And on kickoffs, he’s the one doing the hitting.

“My mom doesn’t want me to do any hitting, but I like the hitting,” he said. l

A

s Herriman BMX rider Darian Inglis turned the corner and headed for the finish line he pulled aggressively in front of the other riders to capture the win.

“I love this,” Inglis said. “I can be aggressive and still get done and be friends.”

The 18 year old makes Rad Canyon BMX track his home track. It has become a nationally renowned facility.

“I have been riding since I was 8 years old. I got started because my uncle rode in X Games and my dad helped me out,” Inglis said.

Family and building relationships is a reason many riders like to spend time at the track.

“I have met new people and had some good competition,” 13 year old Providence Hall Junior High student Ryleigh Herrera said. “I am currently ranked number two in the country as a 14 year old. I practice daily.

I love this track. We just got a new gate and it is super fast.”

The track hosted the annual Great Salt Lake Nationals July 30- Aug. 1. The event boasted 899 unique riders from six countries and 31 states. This was the 30th consecutive year of the event (it was cancelled last season because of the pandemic).

Saturday’s racing included 229 motos (races), an increase of more than 30 from two years ago. The national event has drawn professional riders from all over the world.

“The interest has grown,” USA BMX Director of Nationals Race Operations Chris Luna said. “We have seen an increase in numbers in the last few years."

USA BMX is the sanctioning body that oversees nearly 70,000 riders and 375 tracks across the country. They also oversee the National team.

BMX racing made its Olympic debut in the 2008 Beijing games. Connor Fields from Las Vegas is a member of the National team and competed in the Tokyo Olympics.

He was the defending gold medalist and suffered an injury in the semi-finals race.

Rad Canyon opened in 1996 when it moved from its former location in Murray.

The property is owned and operated by Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation. It has a large starting hill with an eight position starting gate. Its three paved turns lead to long straightaways with a table top, roller and rhythm section.

“I like this track,” 14 year old South Jordan racer Isaac Larson said. “I work around the track and have learned to have lots of fun.”

“This track is all volunteer,” Harmony Mitchell said as she worked the snack bar. “It has a lot of parental involvement. The kids can ride the track for free if they help out. We try to give them some benefits.”

The summer racing season goes from May to October and has racing one night a week with practice times available.

Its largest group of riders is the five and under age group.

“Anyone can show up and rent a bike if needed. We have all of the equipment. My husband races and now all of my kids do too.” Mitchell said. l

Improving Public Infrastructure

A top priority of Riverton City’s strategic plan is to “create a wellconnected community with properly maintained utilities and infrastructure.” This has proven challenging in the midst of such expansive growth; some of which is in our city, but much of it in our neighboring communities that still traffic our roadways.

The Bangerter interchange project is moving quickly, and this month east/west traffic along 12600 S will be restored.

Over approximately the last decade, Riverton City has invested around $40 million in various infrastructure projects between Bangerter Highway and Mountain View Corridor alone. Even with these investments, we have seen unprecedented levels of roadway congestion in recent years related to growth, and recently due to UDOT’s conversion of Bangerter Highway intersections into freeway style interchanges. However, I am excited to announce that the Bangerter interchange project is moving quickly, and this month east/west traffic along 12600 S will be restored. The entire project should be completed by end of year. The 13400 S and Bangerter interchange has been fully funded with HB433 this past session, with construction set to begin in 2023.

In addition, you may have noticed new traffic signals arrived in August at the intersection of 4050 W and 13400 S. This roadway, Old Liberty Way, will provide vital, additional connectivity between 12600 S and 13400 S. Lastly, construction of Majestic Rise Way (13200 S) from Mountain View Corridor to Old Liberty Way is also scheduled to be completed in the next few weeks.

Together, all three projects will play a significant role in alleviating congestion and cutting down travel time along our major travel corridors.

about. We have the 1300 W “S-Curve” roadway project nearing completion. The 1300 W sidewalk, curb and gutter project from 13100 S to 13200 S will also be finished to provide safer walking routes for students. We are also budgeting about $1 million per year toward the maintenance of existing roadways with overlay, crack and slurry seal projects, improving some 50 roads or more each year.

In addition to roadway projects, there are several trail improvements that have been budgeted and being actively worked on this year, to include the Rose Creek Trail and Midas Creek Trail. We are

also in early discussions to create improved pedestrian access across some of the major roadways and canals in our city.

As you can tell, there is a lot going on in our fast-growing city; nonetheless, there is always more work to be done. Fortunately, in passing of HB244, our local legislators have secured $700,000 every year for the next fifteen years for infrastructure projects in Riverton. With this money and other resources, we will continue to strategically prioritize and plan future infrastructure projects that will best support the needs of our current and future residents.

The Value of Operational Response Data

By Chief Wade Watkins Today’s firefighters are “all-hazards” responders, providing emergency medical response, fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, response to active shooter/hostile events, fire inspections, public education, investigation, community training and more. That “more” captures many of the things that are non-emergent in nature by definition. The firefighter community enjoys all aspects of the job.

However, when it comes to responding to the community’s emergency needs, firefighters are all business.

In public you may notice that most, if not all, carry a mobile radio. This radio is a key piece of equipment not only to support communication but to give them situational awareness. This situational awareness is gained through monitoring what is happening throughout the Salt Lake Valley and elsewhere. Multiple channels are scanned and monitored. This ensures ensure that if there is a developing incident, the firefighters can anticipate the need to respond as early as possible. The best way to capture this continual readiness from my perspective is describing it as “leaning forward.”

These habits support the other areas they try to control, which include quick zip boots, snapped shirts vs normal buttons, and every other efficiency they can come up with. If all the firefighters are not on the response unit, it can’t leave the station. So, you can imagine the social pressure there is to have a team approach to improving this time.

As the Riverton City liaison for Unified Fire Authority, I enjoy monitoring the response data to ensure that we’re responding to the community’s needs as effectively as possible. I am continually impressed with the firefighters with positive attitudes and desire to improve on each and every response who serve in Riverton City.

Lady Silverwolves begin season strong

hile school may not have been in session when the Riverton volleyball team opened the 2021 - 2022 season, neither that nor the heat could stop the student body from coming out in support of the varsity volleyball team. After a 10-13 record-including a 5-4 record in league play-last season, this squad started the school year off on a high note, with Riverton sweeping the season opener in three straight sets, 25-4, 25-6, and 25-8.

The Silverwolves started the game off on a hot streak, quickly going up 8-0 in the first set. And the action did not stop there, as Riverton also had a 14-point streak in the third set, en route to the win. The Silverwolves consistently kept the Pirates on their toes, with relentless offense by returning senior Natalie Hansen. In addition to the 11 kills that Hansen had during the series, she also ended up with 12 aces. Other standouts were Adeline Stauffer who had five kills on eight attempts, hitting .625%, and Aubree Littledike recording nine assists during the match. Hansen’s performance moved her into a first place tie with West Jordan’s Mua Letoi in kills for Region 3. She also has the most aces in Region 3 with 12 during the contest with Cyprus. Due to her outstanding play, she was awarded the MaxPreps player of the match.

This year’s varsity team has a lot of ex-

perience as head coach Megan Holt’s Silverwolves are bringing eight seniors back from last season, including Hansen, Littledike, and Stauffer. Other returning seniors are Natalie Averett, Hailey Young, Allison Thurgood, Makenna Brown, and Madilyn Greenwood.

Also returning are sophomore Tessa Hague and juniors Rhylee Tatton and Kaieva Johnson.

Wins in Region 3 will be extra crucial during the upcoming season, as West Jordan joined the already tough division this summer.

West Jordan's integration will provide four tough matchups with two strong teams, with the teams splitting two home games each.

Last year’s region champions, Copper Hills, finished undefeated 10-0 in region play, and 31-2 overall. Riverton dropped both matches last year to Copper Hills and is looking to avenge those losses. Newcomer West Jordan also went 10-0 while playing in region two, and 18-1 overall. Silverwolves fans are in for a treat, as both of those teams will make their way to play in front of the Riverton faithful.

The West Jordan Jaguars will be in town on Sept. 14, and the Copper Hills Grizzlies will play on Sept. 23. Rounding out the remaining teams from Region 3 are Bingham, Herriman, The Silverwolves warm up before their game against Cyprus. (Greg James/City Journals) and Mountain Ridge. l

Girls soccer SLCC and 6A high school preview

T

he soccer teams across the state have begun another season. The high school and college teams in the area want to celebrate their past success, but improve this season.

Soccer is the first official UHSAA sport to begin its season. Most local teams will have reconfigured regions and rosters.

Roy joins Region 2 and should have an impact right away. They defeated Kearns in the first round of last year's state playoffs 3-0 and will stand as immediate contenders for the region title. Kearns is the defending champion of the region and Hunter will need to retool to be competitive.

Cyprus, Granger, Taylorsville and West will battle for who is next among the region's competitors. Offensive production will be the key as the entire region proves its worth.

In Region 3 the top teams have become valley powerhouses. Riverton has looked formidable in its preseason matches, going undefeated and scoring 21 goals in five games. Bingham, Herriman and Mountain Ridge should also contend for the regional title.

West Jordan and Copper Hills have strong soccer tradition and will be teams to consider if one of the top teams falters.

Advancing past the second round of the state playoffs could be the mark of a good

season. Corner Canyon was the only 6A team in Salt Lake County able to accomplish that feat last season.

The UHSAA is scheduled to begin region competition the week of Aug. 17 (after press deadline.) They will use the ratings performance index again this season to set rankings for the state playoffs. Herriman was the county’s top rated 6A team last year at four.

The Salt Lake Community College is coming off its most successful season ever.

In an abbreviated and realigned season they advanced to the NJCAA women's soccer national championship match last spring. They lost to Tyler Community College (Texas) 2-0. This was Tyler's second consecutive championship.

Bruins head coach Mark Davis called it a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for his players.

The team had three players named to the all-tournament team: Carli Jager, Cassidy Adams and Hannah Lee. That ended a fabulous women’s season.

They had an outstanding 15-2-1 record and a Scenic West championship.

Davis stepped down as the team's head coach shortly after the season and they hired Cassie Ulrich. Davis will continue as the

s I was perusing through my social media channels this month, I noticed a few different posts and threads related to the bystander effect. Security camera footage of an ex-boyfriend attempting to kidnap a young woman in July was circulating. The video showed individuals watching but not acting in any way to stop the crime, sparking discussions of surprise and outrage. Many comments attributed this nonaction to the bystander effect.

The bystander effect is the theory people are less likely to offer help to a victim when others are present. It’s a social psychology theory with framework, research and scholarship dating back for decades. The most famous example of the bystander effect dates back to March 19, 1964. When Kitty Genovese returned to her apartment building after getting off of work one evening, she was stabbed 14 times. During the murder investigation, police were perplexed as to why no one had called about the crime. Interviews with 38 neighbors revealed they all had the same thought—surely someone had already called to report Genovese’s 30 minutes of pleas.

Through these famous and current examples, we can see how the bystander effect can be life-threatening and dangerous. Many workplaces have now implemented Bystander Intervention Trainings in response. These trainings are framed around realizing most of us have a certain propensity to be a bystander. Sometimes called upstander training, bystander trainings help individuals to “recognize potentially harmful or hurtful interactions and respond in way intended to positively influence the outcome.”

Trainings may focus on verbal and nonverbal techniques to de-escalate situations.

When I was learning about the bystander effect in my own psychology education, I remember one of my University of Utah professors providing the class with important suggestions. He told us if we ever find ourselves in an emergency situation where someone needs to be calling 911, solicit a specific individual explic-

itly. Look someone directly in the eye, point to them, and tell them “You call 911!” Any action helping to limit the diffusion of responsibility can negate the bystander effect.

I might shift my professor’s suggestions based on actionable behavior to a more cognitive one. Now that you’re aware of the bystander effect, make a conscious effort to not be a bystander. Take initiative in a situation where something needs to be said or done. I often take my own advice here. For example, I was recently driving on a Salt Lake City highway at night.

I had passed a handful of cars when I started to descend a hill. I noticed bright flames as soon as they came into view. I looked to my passenger and asked, “Do you think we need to call that in?” I caught myself in that moment, didn’t allow my passenger time to answer, and started calling. I could have easily thought to myself the few cars that had passed surely called it in.

Being aware of the bystander effect and implementing strategies to help counteract it can help in everyday situations as well. Have you ever had an instance in your workplace where a task didn’t get done because you thought your boss would handle it? And they thought you, or your coworker, were on it? Delegating personal responsibility can ensure all tasks are being completed. And it’s totally fine to do so together.

In a meeting, my team and I can delegate tasks needing to be accomplished that week by preference or schedule.

These types of strategies can be helpful in personal relationships and social interactions as well. One of the most useful strategies to negate the bystander effect is to use names. If everyone knows very clearly that Rai is calling your friend to see where they are and Tyler is grabbing drinks, there’s limited room for miscommunication or dropping the ball.

UWLP survey shows women in the workforce are struggling

I

f there’s one good thing about COVID-19, it might be that the pandemic illuminated the challenges that women face in the workforce, especially with childcare. As schools and daycare facilities closed at the beginning of the pandemic, women bore a disproportionate share of the burden as they tried to keep their heads above water by juggling job responsibilities, homeschooling kids and taking care of housework.

Salt Lake County resident Heather Stewart felt the struggle firsthand when her office shut down, schools closed and she was stuck trying to homeschool two elementary school-aged children while keeping up with her full-time job.

“It was hard to get done what I needed to for work and be present for my kids,” she said. “I felt stretched in every direction. My daughter got behind in math. I knew it was happening, I could see it happening but I didn’t have the energy to do anything about it. I was so burned out.”

Dr. Susan Madsen, Founding Director of the Utah Women & Leadership Project, said she thinks it’s time to start a conversation about supporting women in their roles as business leaders and mothers.

“Finally, the pandemic is opening the eyes of some legislators,” Madsen said. “Lt. Governor [Deidre] Henderson is on this and she knows we need to support our families.”

More than 3,500 women responded to a survey sent out by the UWLP, asking them to share challenges they’ve faced during the pandemic in regard to caregiving, career advancement, homeschool experiences and burnout.

The results showed 16% of women had some type of withdrawal from the workplace, whether it was a lay-off, the company closed, their hours were cut or they were furloughed. For another 12%, women saw their workload increase by moving from part-time to full-time or by taking on more responsibility.

“We had women who just couldn’t do it.

They couldn’t watch their toddler and teach their 3-year-old and manage their departments,” Madsen said. “Teachers really took the brunt. They weren’t being appreciated and put in so much more.”

Madsen shared an example of a teacher who was sick with COVID but was still teaching online. There was nobody to fill in for her and she couldn’t let her students down. Childcare workers

were also heavily impacted by COVID. The ones who responded to the survey expressed frustration at being disrespected and unseen. They don’t want to do it anymore.

“In every case, they felt they were trying to take care of essential workers’ kids while worrying about spreading the virus to other children who might take it home to a parent or grandparent,” Madsen said.

While national and global reports show the majority of workers were adversely affected by the pandemic, women seemed to be affected disproportionately. When Stewart was asked to participate at an in-person meeting for her job, all the men could be there, but she couldn’t attend without finding childcare.

“Why was I the only one who had to stay home with the kids?” she said. “It’s such an entrenched part of how our society operates. My workplace was actually great and very understanding. It’s just how things shake out. But it’s how things always shake out.”

The survey found similar results for women trying to balance working from home with teaching children. Mothers did the lion’s share of the work to keep everything together.

“It was really the moms that took a beating,” Madsen said. “Only 24% of respondents said they had a supportive spouse or partner. The hard thing about work is it’s societal. You have to change society. We've been socialized from the time we’re born to believe that men should be leaders.”

Madsen wants to start the discussion with legislators about improving the workplace for women by enhancing leave policies, creating flexible schedules and helping moms with childcare support. The UWLP will host a free, online fireside chat with Henderson on Friday, Oct. 1 at noon to tackle these topics. The event will be livestreamed to reach as many people as possible.

Madsen hopes men will also listen to the conversation.

Will Olympia become part of Herriman? An annexation update

I

n May, the Herriman Journal reported on a city council discussion on the possibility of annexing the Olympia project (formerly Olympia Hills) into the city. A lot has happened since then, so here’s an update.

Why annex?

Some Herriman residents might wonder why the city would extend its borders to include the controversial 900+ acre development. Simply put, Olympia is being built one way or another and Herriman will have to upgrade its own infrastructure no matter what. If the project happens within city borders, then the city can collect money through impact fees and building permits to pay for those infrastructure improvements.

Another benefit to annexation is that it allows the city to have more of a say in how the development progresses.

The city can negotiate with the developer in efforts to blend the project with neighboring developments in Herriman that already exist, as well as work towards appropriately addressing the impacts.

Annexation timeline There is a very specific process for annexation application and approval established in state law. Throughout the process there are multiple “off-ramps,” or opportunities for the city to back out of negotiations and deny the application.

On June 15, the developer filed a Petition for Annexation.

On July 14, the city council accepted the petition for further consideration. (Not a final approval.)

Following the city’s acceptance of the petition, there’s a review period to make sure the application follows state law.

The city is also required to make a public notice.

Given the current timeline, the city council may be able to vote for final approval (or denial) during its September meetings, according to Assistant City Manager Tami Moody.

If approved at that time, Olympia would officially become part of Herriman on Jan. 1, 2022.

Working groups As this timeline has progressed, the city has established multiple working groups to analyze the costs and benefits of annexing Olympia, as well as negotiate changes to the project with the developer. Those working groups have focused on four aspects of the development: planning, infrastructure, finance and the master development agreement. Each working group has included members of the city council, city staff members and representatives from the developer.

While these meetings haven’t been open to the public, the city has published summaries of what has been discussed in each group’s meetings.

Master development agreement Master development agreements are a tool sometimes used by land-use authorities to regulate the development of unique large-scale projects. They can specify everything from unit density to requirements for open space, building materials and parking, to financing mechanisms.

In a social media post, Councilman Jared Henderson said the MDA is “THE critical piece that gives us some say/ control vs letting it be in unincorporated SL County. Just having it in Herriman’s boundary does NOT give us control of anything!”

ty Council when they voted to approve the development’s rezone application last year. A key focus of the city’s working groups has been to update that MDA to reflect the city’s priorities.

During its Aug. 5 meeting, the Herriman City Planning Commission held a public hearing in which they forwarded the MDA to the city council with a list of recommended changes.

The city council is expected to deliberate the details of both the MDA and the annexation petition during their September meetings. l

Governor wants to incentivize lawn removal with a statewide buy back program

ov. Spencer J. Cox has a little bit of good news for Utahns.

“Every water district has reported significant water savings this year as compared to previous years,” Cox told an audience at Conservation Garden Park in West Jordan on July 29. In response to Utah officials’ repeated pleas to conserve water in a record drought year, Utahns have stepped up.

And thanks to Utahns’ compliance with fireworks bans, the state has also seen a significant reduction in wildfires, particularly in the weeks of July 4 and July 24. This is especially important in years like this one, when extra dry land increases the risk of fire and the state can’t afford to use precious water fighting flames. Still, Cox warned that we have “several months of dangerous wildfire season ahead of us,” and that people need to remain “vigilant.”

Though some of the worst outcomes have been (so far) averted this year, Utah needs to step up its long-term plans for water conservation. As one of the fastest growing states in the nation, the systems put in place now to decrease water use will have huge impacts as the population increases.

“Our administration is committed to advancing more aggressive water conservation measures,” Cox said.

The governor spoke of four distinct areas in which Utah needs to act in order to lay the foundation for a more waterwise future.

One of these areas involves individual home landscapes. Cox announced his intention to implement the Localscapes rewards and Flip Your Strip programs—initially developed in West Jordan and administered by Jordan Valley Water—across the whole state.

“Turf buyback” programs like Localscapes Rewards and Flip Your Strip incentivize homeowners to replace “thirsty grass” in their yards with more waterwise plants. Flip Your Strip involves paying homeowners to

replace grass in park strips, while Localscapes Rewards participants take a class about waterwise landscaping, then receive a cash incentive when they implement the landscape plans in their yards.

Jordan Valley Water began offering Flip Your Strip and Localscapes Rewards in 2017.

“With growing participation year over year and proven water savings, it became natural for other agencies to want to start offering similar programs,” said Megan Jenkins of Jordan Valley Water. “In fact, this was something Jordan Valley planned for.”

While developing its rebate website, utahwatersavers.com, Jordan Valley Water recognized they could expand the programs’ effectiveness by collaborating with other agencies across the state. “By allowing multiple agencies to offer conservation programs and rebates on the same website, many inefficiencies of past water conservation efforts could be eliminated,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins says the two programs have already seen great demand in West Jordan this year. So far in 2021, 659 households have applied for Flip Your Strip, with 392 coming from within Jordan Valley Water’s service area. This represents a significant increase from 2020, when a total of 177 Flip Your Strip applications were submitted.

This year, Cox announced his intention to make Utah the first state to offer a “statewide buyback program.”

Going forward, Utah needs to be a state where grass is planted only “in areas where it actively is used, rather than using it as a default groundcover.”

At the July 29 event, Rick Maloy of the Central Utah Water Conservancy District, announced that beginning Aug. 1, these turf buyback programs pioneered in West Jordan would be available to all counties within the district. The district includes much of Salt Lake, Utah, Juab, Uintah, Sanpete, Wasatch

“While the actual water savings will vary depending on the size of the park strip and the materials used, we estimate that an average 5,000-8,000 gallons of water will be saved each year for every park strip that is flipped,” Jenkins said. l

Back-to-School Shopping Costs More this Year

P

arents with school-aged children have probably noticed that backto-school shopping is costing more this year. Spending on school supplies is expected to hit an all-time high of $850 for the average family in 2021, according to the National Retail Federation.

That’s about $60 more than last year.

And families of college students are paying even more, with an average spend of $1,200, up $140 from last year.

Of course, inflation is affecting much more than just school supplies.

Over the past year, we’ve seen price growth across nearly all spending categories, with higher sticker prices everywhere from the grocery store to the gas pump. This is the result of pent-up demand as well as supply chain delays.

Fortunately, it looks like price gains may be moderating. In July, the Consumer Price Index had its smallest month-tomonth increase since February after reaching a 13-year high in June. Still, inflation is well above pre-pandemic levels, with consumer prices increasing 5.4% over the past year. When it comes to school expenses, your pocketbook may feel the sting in a few areas: • Clothing prices have jumped

4.2% over the past year, with girls’ apparel up 5% and boys’ apparel up 2.6%.

• Replacing outgrown kids’ shoes with new ones will cost 3.6% more than last year, while footwear overall is up 4.6%.

• Educational books and supplies have ticked up 2.6% since last year.

• Prices on personal computers, including tablets, desktop computers and laptops, are 3.7% higher than last year, due in part to a global chip shortage pushing up prices.

• Packing your child’s lunchbox is more expensive than last year, with food prices up 3.4%.

• The school carpool has gotten much more expensive, with gas prices jumping 41.8% year over year.

How long will price gains continue? That’s the big question economists are debating right now. Some are concerned that these inflationary increases could continue to build because of increased federal spending and low interest rates. Others say these price

increases are temporary and will slow down when the current supply chain disruptions start to recede. The surge in COVID cases tied to the delta variant could also slow price increases as consumers pull back on spending amid concerns about the virus, but no one wants that solution to inflationary pressures.

Regardless of whether price increases slow in the future, we won’t see immediate relief on family budgets this back-to-school season. However, Utahns can take heart in the latest jobs report that shows our economy remains among the best in the nation. Beehive State employment increased 4.2% from July 2019 to July 2021, compared to a 2.8% decline nationally, according to Utah’s Department of Workforce Services. Meanwhile, the state’s unemployment rate of 2.6% is near historic lows, compared to 5.4% unemployment nationally. Despite the challenges of the past year and a half, our state’s economy has shown itself to be resilient and continues to perform well.

Pickleball bringing businesses together

E

very other Wednesday, we meet on the pickleball court of battle. They come to the ​​Wardle Fields Regional Park from all over the South Valley. Perhaps, first to get out from in front of their computer screens.

Second, to feel the thrill of victory.

The Wednesday Pickleball tournament has become a must attend for a number of small businesses in the area. Initially, it started as the brainchild of Jared Olsen. He was working at Motivosity, an HR software solutions company in Lehi, when he came up with the idea. With the support of the team, Motivosity Pickleball Networking was born.

Carly McLennan has picked up the mantle since her first time at the event in the summer of 2020. She speaks for Motivosity when she says, “We love to do fun things”. Pickleball is certainly a fun thing.

It has grown in popularity since coming to Utah some years ago. There are now national, annual tournaments in Ogden and St. George. Some of the best ranked players in America live in Utah. If you follow the sport in Utah, you will definitely hear about Alli Phillips, an 18-year-old from North Logan that will have an interesting career in the sport.

Motivosity Pickleball Networking is

just one of many like it popping up. There is another similar event in the north of Salt Lake City but South of Ogden. Another in South Utah in St. George. Pickleball is on the rise. I first found it in Italy, where there are pickleball courts ‘everywhere’.

Seen the courts being played on in the East Coast. The spread has been due to the older generation. A smaller court than tennis and easy to learn.

There is a midweek party vibe when you show up. There is always a supplier for food and snacks. There are other SaaS, software as a service, companies that come to sponsor parts of the event for a chance to contribute and a shoutout on social media.

The event always has music playing. DJ Rob Ferre is the resident DJ for the Motivosity Pickleball Networking.

Carly McLennan, Marketing Manager and Volleyball Enthusiast, was good enough to speak to me and comment on the growth of the event in Bluffdale. Under the leadership of the CEO, Scott Johnson, the event has seen a number of small businesses and other CEOs attend the event. I have played alongside Scott Johnson and you can see that he enjoys the game. Carly told me, “It is really fun to make friends this way.” l

Mt. Ridge football begin promising season with a win over Olympus

M

ountain Ridge senior quarterback Ayden Helm remembers starting in the school’s very first game as a sophomore two years ago.

“I was not big. I was 135 pounds. If you have someone like that starting, who had never taken any varsity reps, you know you’re starting at rock bottom,” he recalled.

Rock bottom indeed. The Sentinels lost to Olympus High that game by a score of 56-0. In fact they lost every game that first year.

Now two years later, that first class of Mountain Ridge sophomores - who got more playing time than they might otherwise have had at Riverton or Herriman - are now the senior leaders, ready to capitalize on that extra game experience they have accumulated.

“There’s no replacing experience,” said Sentinels offensive coordinator Jack Pay. “It doesn’t matter how many reps you get in practice. We have guys with three years of varsity experience.”

Pay is using that wealth of experience to expand the team’s offense this season.

“The experience allows us to add more stuff to the offense. They understand the base offense so it allows us to go into new realms of personnel,” he said. “For the first time in our program history we’re going to use 2-back sets. We’re really trying to find ways to switch things up to get an advantage over the defense.”

"It felt great. It felt good to start the game off with a bang. It kind of set the tone for the whole game and gave us that momentum," Uluave told the Herriman Journal after the game.

“Cade’s a phenomenal kid. Everything you could want in a football player, Cade’s got it. He’ll take the brunt of the carries.

We want to look at doubling his carries this year,” Pay said.

Clearing the way for Uluave is an offensive line that returns three starters from last year, two of which have started since their sophomore year. The third, JR Sia, is a six-foot-six, 308-pound tackle who already has an offer to the University of Utah.

If there’s one position group that lacks experience, it’s the receivers. Three of the top four leaders in receptions on last year’s team graduated. Luckily for the Sentinels, the one player remaining was also the most prolific: Jordan Day. As a junior last season, he led the team with 37 catches for 616 yards and four touchdowns.

“He’s definitely my favorite weapon,” said Helm, who connected with Day on multiple passes during the team’s 37-19 victory over Olympus to open the season.

On the defensive side, the Sentinels are also loaded with senior talent. Four out of the five leading tacklers from last year’s

team return.

“I think we look really good this year.

We look confident, we look poised, we look fast and we look like a group who has overcome a lot and is ready to go,” said defensive coordinator Darius Matthews.

They certainly made their presence known in the season opener, as they forced and recovered fumbles on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter, the first being returned for a touchdown by Tommy Lewis.

One notable change for the Sentinels this year is that they’ve moved up to the 6A classification and joined Region 3, which includes fellow Jordan School District teams like Bingham, Riverton, Copper Hills, West Jordan and of course, Herriman.

The Sentinels and Mustangs close out the regular season against one another in a game that should mean a lot to both sides.

“We played little league with a lot of those kids growing up. It’s going to be a big game and there’s going to be some blood,” Helm said.

“It is a rivalry already, just from the split with some people going to Herriman and some people coming here. We see them as a rival,” echoed senior defensive back Zander Herrera. l

A bit of everything This column could be a bit divisive. I expect 48% of readers will send me envelopes of cash and loving social media messages. Another 48% will steal my birdbath and mail me dead raccoons. The remaining percentage are too busy stocking their underground bunkers to frivolously read newspapers.

Let’s start with COVID-19, shall we?

What a &$%@ nightmare. Cases and tempers continue to rise as we’re asked to wear masks and get vaccinated. It seems like a small price to pay if it ends a global pandemic that has killed more than four million people worldwide. Four million.

Instead, Utahns are shouting about “rights” and “freedoms” and shooting guns in the air and hugging flags and buying MyPillows and yelling at federal and local leaders like this is some type of sporting event, but instead of winners or losers, people die.

I hate wearing a mask, but I do it. I am terrified of shots, but I got the vaccine— twice. There are some things you just do because you love the people around you and want them to be happy and alive. I understand it isn’t possible to “reason” someone into “reason” but here we are.

s a cheerleader at Riverton High School, senior Hailey Butterfield can relate to how Simone Biles was feeling at the Olympics this summer when her mental health affected her performance.

“If you can't take a tumbling pass correctly, it just messes with your head,” Butterfield said. “And if you don’t stick it right then you can hurt yourself, and that's kind of scary. So if you don't stick it a couple times in a row, the stress gets to you.”

Fortunately, Butterfield took a sports psychology class last year at RHS and learned relaxation techniques that help athletes before, during and after a performance as well as how to deal with fear, anxiety and stage fright.

A few weeks before the state cheerleading competition, Butterfield had learned about meditation and visualization in the class and was able to apply the strategies.

“I separated myself, and I did meditation,” she said. “I visualized us hitting our whole routine. And we did really good, so it definitely helped. I saw a difference between our region competition and our state competition.”
