he second phase of the popular commercial center Mountain View Village, located on the western borders of Riverton, is about to get underway.

Drivers going along 13400 south have likely noticed a large steel frame for a 4-story building erected earlier this year. Since then, progress slowed down for a bit (partly due to COVID-19) but the property developer, CenterCal Properties, is ready to get things rolling again. The company formally kicked off its second phase of construction with a press event on Aug. 20 in which they revealed new details about the future of Mountain View Village.

The second phase constitutes a more dynamic design than phase one, with multiple areas geared towards community gathering and activities, in addition to shopping.

First, the plans include a brand new Cinemark theater with 14 screens which will serve as an attraction for people from all over the south-west corner of the valley.

While people are waiting for their show time, they’ll be able to get a bite to eat from a selection of fast-casual restaurants that will occupy an area known as “The Pavillion.” They can eat their food inside or outside on the “Plaza” where they can take in an outdoor concert series or watch their kids have fun on a playground. There will also be a “state-of-the-art show fountain featuring dancing waters and colored lights choreographed to music.” And on the exterior of the nearby 4-story “Building M” will be a massive LED screen which will show videos to “entertain and energize the area.”

Wheelchair turns teacher into role model

R

avien Parsons, a special education teacher at Summit Academy Bluffdale Campus, unexpectedly became a role model for students when she became a disabled person herself. Last winter, Parsons developed Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare progressive disease. She left for Christmas Break on her own two feet and returned in January in a wheelchair.

As a special education teacher working with students with mild to moderate impairments, autism and learning disabilities, Parsons often asks teachers to make accommodations for students. She studied disability laws and rights while earning her master’s degree in teaching with a specialization in special education. She often works with parents to help break down the negative connotations often associated with asking for accommodations for their children. So, she did not have a problem asking for accommodations for herself.

The Summit Academy staff was accommodating to her new situation.

“She doesn’t have to try to explain why things are needed to me,” said Principal Diana Brantley, whose 27-year-old daughter also uses a power wheelchair. “I knew what she was going to need before she came to me.”

“My principal is amazing,” Parsons said. “When I showed up after the new year in a powerchair, she literally said ‘OK, let’s go to your classroom, and let’s see what we need to rearrange to make sure you can turn around. Let’s see what we need to do to make things work for you.’”

Parsons was sharing a classroom with other teachers and had limited space to maneuver her wheelchair. Brantley promptly provided a Chromebook device for every student in the school so she could clear out the computer lab to provide a larger classroom for Parsons. She installed an automatic closing door for the classroom and provided wheelchair-friendly furniture.

Further adaptations were required for this fall. Like many teachers, Parsons’ health puts her at high risk for COVID-19 compli-

cations. She will be working in her empty classroom as the virtual teacher for the special needs students who’ve opted for online learning this fall.

“I’ll be able to help other students, and my health won’t be severely affected, hopefully,” Parsons said.

Not everything has gone smoothly as Parsons has adapted to her new circumstances. She’s put a lot of dents in hallways while learning to maneuver her powerchair, and she has discovered that many stores and public places don’t have a lot of accommodations for wheelchair users.

After a particularly frustrating and embarrassing situation in which she got stuck in a hallway at a home improvement store, Parsons gained some empathy for her students who have dealt with these kinds of situations their whole lives.

“I can see where the frustration and some of the behaviors of my students may come from because they don’t know how to handle those emotions,” she said. “They haven’t been taught the skills or the coping mechanism to even recognize when they are feeling that way before it gets to that point.”

She hopes she will be able to help her students learn how to work through those frustrations. She also strives to be an example of advocating for herself and for others.

After her public meltdown, Parsons contacted the home improvement store—not to just complain but to offer possible solutions to the problem with their restroom.

Parsons hopes she can inspire students, especially those who feel limited by their disabilities.

“If they see me with a disability, but I’m still able to do things that they may or may not have thought were possible, then maybe that’ll give them hope and perseverance to try things that they wouldn’t have tried before,” she said.

“The children see her every day, and they have seen her face that storm,” she said.

“That’s how we teach children to face hard times; we model it. And that’s how we teach children to become comfortable with disabilities, people who might look different, or somehow be different—even racial differences. How we overcome that is by living and growing and having experiences that tell us differences are just a part of life. Just living with your differences and experiencing that in childhood—that’s how you end up with tolerant, loving, open-minded adults.”

This is Parsons’ second year teaching at Summit Academy.

“Out of all 10 years teaching, this has been the best environment, and I want to stay and be a part of that as long as I can,” she said.

As a newcomer to Utah (she moved here three years ago), she has been overwhelmed by the support of her new community. Families and staff at Summit Academy hosted two community yard sales this spring to raise money for her to be able to purchase a wheelchair-accessible van. Her hometown community in Louisiana held a cook-off event and collected donations for her as well. Together, the communities raised nearly $30,000.

“I have just been completely blown away by generosity and everything that we’ve gotten from both communities,” Parsons said.

She said the van has given her independence and improved her quality of life.

Stiff Person Syndrome is a progressive disease, but Parsons’ passion for teaching keeps her getting out of bed each day.

“Some days are good; some days are not so much,” she said. “It’s just one day at a time and trying to keep pushing myself, because I’m not going to give up. I still want to help kids, and I still want to be able to be productive.” l

Services abound for homeless, low-income students

he nearly 1,900 homeless students and 11,000 on the free or reduced school lunch program in Jordan School District are in good hands. The district is bursting with support resources including Principal’s Pantries, McKinney–Vento homeless liaisons and Title 1 programs, all with the goal to meet students’ physical needs so they can be successful in school.

“The whole purpose of it is, if they are hungry or cold, they don’t think about schoolwork, and it takes them off the path of graduation,” said Robyn Luke, homeless liaison at West Jordan High School. “I’m there to keep their physical needs met so they can stay focused on graduating.”

Homeless liaisons, part of the McKinney–Vento program serving students who are homeless or living in severe economic circumstances, are stationed at each high school in JSD and at middle and elementary schools as needed. They distribute food, clothing, coats, shoes and hygiene products for students in need. Students stop by the Principal’s Pantry for something to eat if they haven’t eaten breakfast or lunch. They can also take a bag of food home for the weekend. Luke said students often worry about standing out among their peers. They are relieved to be able to get some nice clothes and a warm coat from those donated to the Principal’s Store so they can blend in with their peers.

Hilda Lloyd, homeless liaison for all of Jordan District, said the McKinney–Vento program gives students options and opportunities to access education and to stay in school despite difficult living circumstances.

She identifies problems that keep students from coming to school and finds solutions to them. One student couldn’t afford to get to school; she provided them with a gas card.

One family had only one set of clean clothes so two boys were taking turns going to school and other students were sleeping in their cars with no access to clean clothing; Lloyd installed a washer and dryer for students at West Jordan and Copper Hills High Schools.

While distance learning this spring was a struggle for many students, it was a positive change for McKinney–Vento students, who often get distracted by worrying about how to overcome obstacles to get to school and to fit in while there, said Lloyd.

“I think the students had the opportunity to be online without having the stress about getting to school and getting homework done,” Hilda said. “It was a time for them to focus, and there were no other things that were holding them back.”

With the McKinney–Vento liaisons staying in contact with the 156 seniors in the program this spring, for the first time ever, 100% of the seniors in the program graduated.

“We just have amazing people who

make sure that these kids graduate and have the best opportunity to be successful after graduation,” Jordan Director of Communications Sandy Riesgraf said.

Superintendent Anthony Godfrey recently highlighted the work of liaisons on his Supercast. He called them “creative problem solvers,” “miracle workers” and “life-savers.” Luke also recently received the Outstanding Support Professional for 2020 award for her work expanding the Principal’s Store at WJHS. Title I schools also provide support resources for students in need. Evelyn Sadler is the parent family liaison for students of the seven Title 1 schools in Jordan District. She helps students and families access local resources and assistance programs. She helps families register for programs to help with heating bills or provides bus tokens for parents to get to a job interview. She coordinates with principals to schedule visions screenings and free eyeglasses, dental clinics, immunization clinics, visits from the Utah Food Bank and donations of shoes, coats and school supplies.

“We have programs to try and take away from any of the financial concerns that families might have about their kids succeeding in school,” said Heather Reich, a teacher at Majestic Elementary, a Title 1 school. “Our families, they might be struggling, but they do support their kids in school and they do

believe in education. It’s just helping them overcome some other things to break those barriers down.”

Families can also access family support services such as the Family Learning Centers located at Heartland and Majestic Elementary Schools.

“The Learning Center is super important because it draws the families in and gives them information in order to improve their lives, which ultimately is going to improve our kids’ lives and then, really, our community and our society,” said Reich.

On the front lines of caring for low-income students are caring and dedicated teachers like Reich and her co-teacher, Kyla Asmar. They teach sixth grade at Majestic Elementary, which has the highest proportion of low-income and homeless students in the district. The two teachers have received an Effective Teachers in High Poverty Schools Award for the past three years.

Reich said the secret to their success is caring about the kids and setting high expectations for them.

“I absolutely love my kids, and they know that I do, and I think that that’s important,” Reich said. “They know that I care about them, and so they want to do well.”

Majestic teachers and administrators, including the Principal of the Year Kathe Riding, work tirelessly to take care of needs that would distract students from learning and being successful in school.

“Almost everything is harder for them,” Reich said. “They’re not sure if their water is going to be on when they get home. That’s definitely something that I never worried about as an 11-year-old.”

The district programs are in place to serve students but can only help if the families are aware of them. Lloyd said many students are embarrassed to ask for help, are unaware they qualify, or are fearful of negative repercussions from sharing information about their circumstances.

“My biggest fear is not meeting a student’s needs that really needs them because they want to be silent about it,” Lloyd said.

Earning the trust of a student is the biggest challenge and the biggest joy of her job, said Luke. She was able to help a number of new families this spring when the pandemic exacerbated their situations, and they reached out for help.

“That’s one positive that came from the coronavirus,” Luke said. “They found out I was there and I could help. I really hope we can find more. I know they’re there; I’m sure there’s homeless kids there. But I have to develop the trust, and they need to get the word out.”

South Valley Chamber names new president and CEO

he new leader for the South Valley Chamber of Commerce will carry on the tradition of relationship building. Jay Francis will be president and CEO, replacing Greg Summerhays, who led the Chamber for four years. Francis will begin his new position in early September.

Exciting Development Continues on Riverton’s West Side By Mayor Trent Staggs Over the last ten years, Riverton City’s elected officials have made several strategic planning decisions with the intention of spurring economic growth in our great city. Over the last few years, we have now seen the materialization of those planning efforts with some incredible new development. This development not only allows all of us to frequent great retail, restaurant and entertainment options closer to home, but it also keeps more of our sales tax dollars in Riverton, improving our financial position and allowing taxes and fees to be kept low.

Just last month, we were able to announce that Costco Wholesale has officially submitted a formal commercial site plan application for a location at the northeast corner of 13200 S and Mountain View Corridor, just north of Mountain View Village. This project is situated on 19.19-acre property and will include a 160,000 square foot warehouse, Costco gas station and more than 800 parking stalls. No doubt this location will attract customers from all over the southwest valley including residents from Herriman, Bluffdale

and western South Jordan. The site plan has now been approved by the Planning Commission. Construction at the site will likely begin this fall. It is anticipated the store will open in summer of 2022.

The addition of such a wellestablished and successful business will have a tremendous influence on our economic viability and future growth of the western commercial district for years to come. It is important to understand that a project of this size will have a considerable impact on future sales tax revenue and our ability to keep property taxes and other fees low for residents. We currently utilize a 0% property tax rate and our average annual utility fees remain lower than fees issued by our neighboring cities. This means less burden on Riverton taxpayers and more money that can be spent on essential government functions.

With the inclusion of this newest project, our western commercial district will be anchored

by Costco, Harmons and the numerous other shopping and dining options located within Mountain View Village

There is also approximately 480 acres remaining within the western district that is owned and operated

by Suburban Land Reserve (SLR). Most of this land is designated as “mixed use” which means it

will include both commercial and residential housing developments.

Our expectation is that most of this project area south of 13400 will be residential, while north of 13400 will be largely built out with commercial and office uses.

As we move into the future, it is my intention to work alongside SLR to ensure this area reflects the desires of our residents and provides a safe and healthy mix of commercial and residential housing developments.

This continued proper planning will allow our city to provide the very best services and opportunities for residents. Our city is financially secure, economically diverse, and I look forward to all the additional growth that will take place in the coming future.

By Councilmember Claude Wells 2020 has been a very challenging year where we have learned a lot about ourselves, our families, our neighbors and our community.

We found out we didn’t have enough toilet paper (apparently) and that we didn’t know how important social distancing and personal protective equipment (PPE) would play in our lives.

We have had a lot of challenges thrown our way trying to navigate through COVID-19 and learn how to keep our families safe while trying to keep some normalcy. High school graduations changed but ended up being fun and memorable.

The way we shop, the way we work, and how we dine has changed.

And, of course the way we interact with each other. The hardest for some is how we celebrated our independence day summer celebra-

tions. We made it through. A lot has changed. We are getting through these difficult times. More difficult for some than others because of job loss. Some lost loved ones and were not able to celebrate their lives like they would have chosen.

We have had peaceful protests, riots, and unrest in our capital city.

We had residents calling for the defending of our police departments in different parts of our state.

Just like Salt Lake City is not New York City. Riverton City is not Salt Lake City.

Our residents have reached out to show their love, concern, and support for our Riverton City police department. We have a little slice of paradise out here in the South Valley. Our people have handled some of the disappointments, changes and their own sacrifices with dignity, and we have come out well compared to many cities.

We are a special city! We have resilient people. We will continue to get through our personal struggles and challenges together.

COVID-19 has taught us much about what we have, what we think we need and what’s truly important.

In our community we appreciate our police force, their sacrifices, their professionalism, and their commitment to our city. At the end of the day, we just want our officers to go home to their families safe. We will continue to support them, and budget as needed for their growth and needs to do their jobs. More now than ever we need to support our police department.

One thing for sure is we will never forget 2020 and take the little things for granted any longer.

Training and Preparation Key to Emergency Response

By Battalion Chief Wade Watkins On any given day within Riverton City, firefighters respond to the emergency needs of the community. This comes with the responsibility to perform under challenging conditions with no room for error. The sudden, intense energy demand of an emergency scene requires the fitness to perform methodically under stress while communicating effectively with a unified team.

Focusing on the safety of the community is what drives firefighters to stay physically and mentally fit for the challenge of the next emergency incident. Maintaining a strong aerobic capacity for the rigors of the everyday job is key, which can include running up stairs, climbing ladders and more. This is all while wearing up to 75 pounds of personal protective equipment (PPE), depending on the job.

That is exactly why the Unified Fire Authority embraces fitness and is continually looking for opportunities to improve the readiness of our firefighters. The importance of assessing our collective and individual capability is the key in targeting where

Adopt, Don’t Shop

W

e are experiencing a crisis in the United States - a crisis of companion animal overpopulation. The overpopulation crisis is leading to a staggering number of animal deaths in shelters. According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters in the United States each year. Of that 6.5 million, 1.5 million do not make it out alive.

That is roughly 23% or one-quarter of the animals. This means that for every four animals that enter a shelter, one is killed.

The reasons animals are killed in shelters varies, but the number one killer is a lack of space.

At the Humane Society of Utah, we work to reduce the number of animals entering shelters through low-cost spay and neuter services, veterinary medical help for those who can’t afford traditional veterinary care, and behavioral counseling.

Further, because we have excellent adoption rates at our shelter in Murray, Utah, we work to reduce shelter overpopulation by transferring in animals from high-kill shelters in Utah, as well as Texas, Arizona, and other states in our region. We work tirelessly to relieve the pressure at these shelters, but truth be told, the flow of animals never stops.

Companion animal overpopulation is one of the reasons why the Humane Society of Utah opposes companion animal breeding, but it is not the only reason.

Companion animal breeding is largely unregulated in the United States. As a result, companion animals are often overbred, inbred, and dangerously undersocialized.

An undersocialized puppy often grows up to become an unruly (and sometimes aggressive) adult dog. When a family can no longer handle the dog, he or she gets turned into a shelter. Once there, a shelter uses its meager resources to try to help the animal become adoptable. Sometimes, it is successful. Other times, the damage done is too great and a shelter is forced to euthanize the dog for safety reasons. The toll this takes on the individuals in the shelter is immeasurable. More importantly, the loss of life is unforgivable when it can easily be prevented by adopting instead of shopping.

A side note on breed preference: According to Best Friends Animal Society, it is estimated that between 25 and 30 percent of companion animals in shelters are purebred. This means it is incredibly likely that, with a little patience, an individual can find their preferred breed at a shelter or rescue.

Four students top technology awards in computing

our local high school girls recently were awarded regional winners of the National Center for Women & Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing.

Manya Nair, of Riverton High; Katelyn Swain, of JATC; Maya Heesch, of Providence Hall; and Sydney Leister, of Mountain Ridge High, were honored March 7 as they “significantly demonstrated interest and aptitude for computing.” They were four of the 16 regional winners and received an engraved crystal trophy for the high school as well as individual crystals, scholarship opportunities and technology prizes.

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors 9th- through 12th-grade students for their computing-related achieve-

ments and interests, and encourages them to pursue their passions. Award recipients are selected based on their aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing, as demonstrated by their computing experience, computing-related activities, leadership experience, tenacity in the face of barriers to access, and plans for post-secondary education.

Nair, who recently graduated from Riverton, was both her school’s DECA and FBLA presidents, a state champion and national top 5 percent in Skills USA entrepreneurship contestant, and served as a senior member of the Women Tech Council student board. She plans to double major in computer science with an emphasis on data science, and business.

Swain got involved in technology through

a Girls who Code camp and has been studying digital media and web design. She has run the websites of two schools in Jordan School District as well as a non-profit website. She planned to work this summer as a junior web developer and wants to pursue full stack web development and graphic design in college.

Heesch is vice president of her school robotics club and has a passion for editing videos. She wants to earn her bachelor’s degree in computer information systems and software engineering and pursue a career in cyber security and become a professional white hat hacker.

Leister is involved in SheTech as a student board representative, competed in website design event at the state FBLA conference, and has attended Utah State’s app camp and Brigham Young University’s cybersecurity camp. She recently graduated and wants to earn a degree in computer science so she can design software for Apple or Google.

Myers has adapted how she will work with small groups of students for speech therapy.

“I plan to provide each child with their own toys and manipulatives instead of sharing them as I have done before, so that they will more easily be able to keep their distance from each other while participating in the speech,” she said.

Teachers have developed creative ways to keep students’ individual supplies contained.

“I have purchased clear VHS cases that they will use to keep their supplies in,” said Amy Vadeboncoeur, kindergarten teacher at Midas Creek Elementary. “They even have a clear sleeve that I can slide their name tag right in.”

Shaylyn Hansen and AnneMarie Taggart, the second grade team at Mountain Point, found that plastic toothbrush holders were a great option to store a weeks’ worth of sharpened pencils for each student instead of using a community jar. Pencils will be resharpened each week and the case will be

Their students normally use a lot of tactile manipulatives for math and spelling practice. The plastic, foam and magnetic supplies and manipulatives have been replaced with paper versions and each student will have their own set.

The creative team has also come up with a system to keep their library books sanitary.

Once a student finishes reading a book, they will place it “in bed to rest.” No books can be taken out of this special basket because it would “interrupt the book’s sleep.” Once the book has “slept long enough”—a minimum of a 72-hour incubation period—it will be available to read again. l

Kathryn DeSantis tells about her practice: In the autumn of 2001, I opened my own Primary Care clinic in Holladay’s Professional Plaza on 2046 Murray Holladay Road, not knowing beforehand where that decision would eventually lead.

Needless to say, as a female, and also as a Family Nurse Practitioner, I have long held an interest in the causes and symptoms of PMS/PMDD and beyond, and wanted to know how to help my patients feel their best throughout the ever-changing stages of life. With the release in 2002 of the myth-shattering research results of the Women’s Health Initiative, I went on a medically-guided quest to unravel the mysteries and marvels of hormone balancing. he Mountain Ridge volleyball team started off its season with a dominant 3-0 victory over Stansbury High School. Head coach Bryan Nicholson said his team is grateful for every chance they have to get out on the court.

“It was good to play someone other than ourselves,” he said. “We’re really thankful for every match we get right now with the crazy COVID stuff. That’s our approach to the season is every practice and game is a gift.”

The Sentinels are coming off an inaugural 2019 campaign in which they went 12-19 overall and 3-9 in region play. That was good enough for a No. 14 seed based on RPI rankings, which allowed them to host a first-round matchup against Spanish Fork, which they won 3-1.

“Getting our first playoff win, being able to host a game and get to the UVU center was a big goal of ours,” said Nicholson. “This year [our goal] is getting deeper into the playoff, and we have the tools to do that. If we can stay healthy, we can continue to progress.”

One advantage for the Sentinels this season is that they return a lot of experience. As a first-year school last year, they had just two seniors and only five juniors. That allowed a lot of sophomores and freshmen to get valuable playing time, which could pay dividends this year.

In fact, one of the Sentinels’ best players last year, Ireland McNees, was a freshman.

She played in more sets than anyone else on the team and recorded the second-most kills on the team with 265.

She’ll be given even more responsibilities this year, as she’s moving to part-time setter as well, said Nicholson.

But the Sentinels’ biggest offensive weapon is senior outside hitter Sammy Perry, who last year led the team in kills with 307 and was an honorable mention for the 5A All-State team.

“She’s really improved a lot,” Nicholson said. “She gets us points when we’re not supposed to. She takes care of the ball. She’s basically our best offensive weapon right now.” l

Mountain Ridge starts season with first win in program history

hat a difference a year makes.

Last year, the Mountain Ridge football team opened up its inaugural season by losing to Olympus High, 56-0. This year?

The Sentinels got revenge, as they went up to the Titan’s home field and came away with a 27-17 victory, the first in program history.

Last year, the Sentinels struggled as many first-year schools do. A young team with many fewer upperclassmen than most teams, they lost every game and scored just

nine points through the first five games.

While it was a difficult season, head coach Mike Meifu said it made the team stronger.

“Last year was rough in every way,” he said. “It seemed like everything was against us. They buckled down; they handled adversity extremely well.”

The team started to put things together toward the end of last season, culminating in a season-high 21 points scored against Highland in the first round of the playoffs. That momentum, plus the advantage of returning almost all of last year’s starters, set the Sentinels up for a more hopeful second season.

Being a mom to kids with mental health challenges

“I want to die. I’m done.” Those were the words I heard from one of my children several years ago. It was late one evening, my husband was out of town, and when my son came to me for help, my brain was reeling… I didn’t know what to do.

I’m not alone when it comes to having children, a spouse, or other family members with mental health challenges.

As I’ve worked on these issues as a Salt Lake County Councilmember, and on the state’s mental health crisis response commission, I know we need to talk openly and break the stigma. I’m grateful to my family members who have given me permission to share some of our experiences…

A few of my kids have struggled with anxiety — it runs in my family. In fact, I can relate with how they feel because I, too, have battled it. After years of putting myself in high-anxiety situations, meeting with a helpful therapist, and learning my triggers (lack of sleep is the biggest one), I’ve been able to mostly overcome it. But my kids have had to learn in their own ways what their anxiety triggers are, and what they are willing to do to over-

come it. I’ve had some kids who gladly met with a therapist, and others who thought they “didn’t need that,” and later realized that therapy is immensely helpful.

I’ve had some of my kids who have tried medication and decided it didn’t help them much, and others who are grateful for modern medicinal miracles.

All have realized that solving mental health issues is more than taking a pill.

It’s work. Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health are intertwined.

I’ve experienced depression as both the patient and the spouse. After my second baby was born, I found myself dealing with post partum depression and it was awful. Feeling like you have nothing to look forward to, and even wondering if your presence on this earth is meaningful is not a pleasant experience, but I gained empathy for those who deal with it.

My husband went through a bout of depression a few years after we were married. I think that being the spouse of someone dealing with depression is far worse than actually being depressed myself. It was the most helpless feeling I

had ever felt. I wanted to fix things for him, make him all better, and watching him suffer was difficult to watch. We were lucky it was a short-term issue.

So back to the son at the beginning of this article… I took him to the hospital. And later found out that some hospitals are better for suicidality than others.

I learned how hard it is to be the parent of a loved one who was suicidal. Every day I would worry if he slept in too long, or if he didn’t come home on time. I had nightmares about finding him dead. It was such a scary time and I’m so grateful he got the help he needed and is doing so well now! My advice to all of you who are struggling or are watching a family member struggle… talk to someone. Don’t suffer in silence. This illness totally sucks for so many reasons. A Brave New World Not necessarily known for our patience, Americans are suffering from COVID fatigue. People can’t wait for things to return to a “new normal” like suddenly everything’s going to be ice cream sundaes and furry kittens. The way 2020 is going, the new normal will probably be kitten sundaes and furry ice cream.

Our world has changed, for better or worse, so now’s a good time to decide what we keep and what we toss. I’m all for tossing office jobs, dress pants and family reunions, while keeping pajamas-as-clothes, Uber Eats and virtual baby showers.

Let’s look at how the new normal is evolving, shall we?

Sports – Like a canary in a coal mine, team sports started up this summer with the hope of bringing entertainment to millions of sports-starved individuals, and millions of dollars to money-starved sports organizations.

as teams drop out once their players contract COVID. Who’d have thought activities that include spitting, shouting, sweating and grunting could easily spread viruses?

School – Or as I like to call it, the Catch-22 Education Plan.

Parents and teachers are negotiating this real-life version of Oregon Trail where one wrong move can end up with junior high students being eaten by cannibals in Donner Pass. (Not the worse thing.) Here’s an idea: make the best decision for your family without judging everyone else.

Parenting – Let’s just agree that “screen time” rules have been suspended indefinitely, and it’s just fine if your toddler wears the same outfit for three days. Let’s also agree chicken nuggets are healthy, YouTube personalities are annoying, and everyone gets a blue ribbon for doing the best they can.

Work – Every introvert’s birthday wish was granted when they were told to work from home.

Turns out, with these new-fangled computers, lots of stuff can be done at home. Who knew? Maybe companies don’t need 50,000 square feet of office and ping-pong space, or outdoor meditation biospheres.

Date night – You’ve spent an inordinate amount of time with your significant other. You’ve worked from home together, prepared 5,459 meals together, rearranged closets, sock drawers and bathroom cabinets. Maybe the new normal will be individuals spending date night alone, so they don’t drive to the grocery store one day and end up with a new life in Cheyenne.

Weddings – Can we please standardize virtual weddings? That is all.

Holidays – Even with social distancing guidelines, summer holidays stayed the same as everyone went to national parks, held BBQs and spent the day sitting at the community pool with hundreds of other people. These holidays were

always followed by a COVID spike. I’m sure the fall/winter holidays will be no different because people are crappy at following CDC advisories.

The 2020 Election – It’s been 28 years since the 2016 election and this year’s election has disaster written all over it. Literally. Will there be mail-in ballots?

Russian interference? A loser who refuses to leave the White House?

Civil war? The return of our alien overlords? All of the above? My best guess for election aftermath is equivalent to shaking a Magic 8 Ball, and then lighting it on fire.

Mindset – Some people say COVID will help the world achieve a higher level of consciousness where people are more compassionate, kind understanding and . . . hahahaha . . . never mind. I don’t think we’re there yet. Time to go make a kitten sundae. l
