iverton High School teacher Jay Hales was one of 25 teachers across the country who won $50,000 as part of the Harbor Freight Tools For Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence.

Hales has been teaching automotive service technology classes at Riverton High School since 1999. His $50,000 prize will be split into two checks - $15,000 for Hales himself, and $35,000 for the automotive service technology program at Riverton High School.

“I have encouraged and promoted the importance of being honest and putting forth your best work in all of my classes,” Hales said. “I hope by stressing these important attributes and trying to lead the students by example they will all work hard, learn from mistakes and be honest with their customers and employees.”

Hales is one of 25 to win this award and the program is receiving increasing amounts of applicants each year.

“This year there were more than 1,000 applications for the prize, a 31 percent increase from 2022,” stated the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools press release. “The application process included three rounds of judging, each by an independent panel of experts from education,

Mountain Ridge girls soccer wins Region 2 title; reaches state quarterfinals

I

n a hotly contested Region 2 race in girls soccer, the Mountain Ridge Sentinels came out on top.

Mountain Ridge didn’t cement the region championship until the final regular season game. By defeating Real Salt Lake Academy on Sept. 27, the Sentinels finished 10-2 in league play, a game ahead of Copper Hills and two games ahead of Corner Canyon. Mountain Ridge beat runner-up Copper Hills in both meetings—and both meetings were convincing three-goal victories. The Sentinels prevailed over the Grizzlies 3-0 on Aug. 29 at home and 4-1 on the road on Sept. 21.

For its efforts, Mountain Ridge earned

the fourth seed in the Class 6A state tournament. The Sentinels got a bye in the first round and then hosted 13th-seeded Pleasant Grove on Oct. 10. Thanks to strong goalkeeping from Elle Rafajko and solid defending from the backline, Mountain Ridge shut out Pleasant Grove 2-0. The Sentinels got a goal in each half, with Jocelyn Wright and Kya Newton finding the back of the net. Chesney Bitton had an assist in the key victory.

In the quarterfinals, with a bid to the semifinals on the line, Mountain Ridge drew fifth-seeded American Fork, which finished second in Region 3. The Sentinels started off well, leading 1-0 at halftime be-

potent in all of Class 6A. Both players had 15 goals on the year, with Newton also leading the team with 11 assists. Peytyn Bullard had three goals and four assists, while Kelsie Peterson had three goals and seven assists. Kaislee Johnson, Hadley Leonard, Jayla McFarland and Myka Peck each had two goals.

Mountain Ridge could be a team to watch in 2024. Wright will return for her senior season next year, and Newton is just a sophomore. Bullard, who plays midfielder and defense, is a junior too, as is Peterson. l

Tree lighting for the state’s tallest Christmas tree on Nov. 18

F

or the 12th consecutive year, the Outlets at Traverse Mountain will celebrate the holidays with the lighting of Utah’s tallest fresh-cut Christmas tree.

The public is invited to attend the illumination of the 70-foot-tall Christmas tree on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 5 p.m. at the Outlets at Traverse Mountain (3700 N. Cabelas Blvd.) in Lehi.

With more than 5,000 ornaments and 1.5 miles of LED lights with approximately 10,000 bulbs, the 20-foot-wide tree will be on display through the holiday season.

“It’s been important to our company and a long-standing tradition,” Teri Sunderland said, general manager at the Outlets at Traverse Mountain. “We’ve always enjoyed being a shopping center developer that presents tradition and nostalgia along with all of the great holiday festivities, and for us, that means presenting a beautiful, exceptional fresh cut, white fir tree and going to town with all the decorations.”

Although the tree lighting starts at 5 p.m., there are other family activities that start at 2 p.m. including the opening of the life-sized gingerbread-inspired village, featuring a 30-foot-tall gingerbread tower.

The event culminates with Santa Claus using his magic to light the Christmas tree,

followed by family entertainment.

“It is really exciting,” Sunderland said. “It’s the week preceding Thanksgiving and that’s when we deck the halls and everything lights up and it’s beautiful. AI can solve teachers’ No. 1 complaint

I is the solution to teachers’ number one problem, Jordan District Digital Teaching and Learning Administrator Jared Covili said.

“The number one complaint teachers have is they never have enough time,” Covili said. “And with AI, one of the benefits we see is that it provides teachers with additional time to work on what they need to do with students.”

Jordan District Digital Learning Specialist Kasey Chambers said the amount of time AI tools can save teachers depends on how much they are willing to use it.

“It's going to take a little bit of time to figure out where it fits into our workflow, but as teachers get more proficient and keep testing it out and keep being willing to delegate to AI, it's going to be a big part of saving time,” she said. “The minute-to-minute decision making of teachers is exponential, so anything we can do to lessen that and make their jobs easier is a win.”

Chambers highlighted time-saving AI tools at a professional development workshop held in September. She encouraged teachers, administrators and coaches to use AI tools to help customize material, generate lists, brainstorm ideas, improve lesson plans and to help write emails, newsletters, presentations and grants.

“It’s like a thought partner,” she told teachers. “This is going to work with your brain to generate what you would have made and make it in way less time.”

Jordan District provides teachers access to tools such as SchoolAI, which they piloted over the summer. The Digital Learning Department regularly features new tools and tips on their Instagram page, offers training workshops and shares tools and tips with the digital learning coach at every school in the district.

Dan Clark, the digital learning coach at West Jordan Middle School, said his goal is to provide his colleagues with tech tools that reduce their workload.

“We are introducing them to some of these things that lighten the load, because the load for teachers across the country is extremely large, but the load for teachers in Utah is even more so,” he said.

One time-consuming task Jordan District teachers have is transitioning their letter grading systems to standards-based grading. With six to eight units and assessments each quarter, that’s a lot of work for teachers, Clark said. He encourages his

oping new technology.

“Technology has always existed to increase our abilities to do other things,” Price said. “We don't go and plant each crop individually like they used to do back in the 1800s. We have machines that will allow us to do that, which then allows us to do other things.”

The “other things” teachers do with the time they save is spend more time interacting with students, Jordan Hills Elementary teacher Jill Firkins said. Before she began using AI tools, she used to spend hours searching through resources for lesson and activity ideas. Now, she uses AI-powered searches to find and customize materials for engaging lessons in a fraction of the time. The time she saves is spent directly teaching her students and providing them with more in-depth feedback.

“Whether it's before school or after school or helping students that are struggling with homework, I can give that planning time to them,” she said.

Chambers said while giving the extra time to students is good, teachers should also take some of that time back for themselves for the sake of their mental health wellness and work-life balance.

“Maybe I'm not working two to three hours a night grading because AI helps me get it done in 20 minutes and I can give that time back to my family, and that's okay, too,” she said. “Any benefit to a teacher making their job easier, making it more effective, is a benefit for students at the end of the day.” l

colleagues to use AI tools to help break down each unit of study into measurable proficiency skills. With a detailed prompt, an AI assistant can, in less than a minute, generate a basic outline of assessments based on teaching standards.

“Here's this tool that will do a lot of it for you and it makes something overwhelming seem very within reach,” Clark said. “It can shoot out something pretty good and then a teacher with a lot of experience can whittle that down to what they're expecting students to do.”

Clark said first year teachers, who face a greater than normal workload as they build lesson plans and assessments from scratch, can benefit greatly from AI tools.

“I think it takes five years of teaching before you feel like you're a good teacher, and that learning curve is bigger right now because we have a lot more teachers that are coming in on alternative routes to licensure,” Clark said. “I'm hoping that that learning curve can be a little shorter as I help teachers utilize some of these tools.”

Another time-intensive aspect of teaching is differentiation—adapting information to meet a range of abilities.

Chambers said it can be a lot of work when teachers have a lot of students who all need a slightly different approach to learning the lesson material.

“It’s so much work and sometimes I can’t do it,” she said. “But AI can help do that so easily. I can plan quality, research-based interventions using AI as a tool to be a thinking partner.”

Teachers can make lesson materials more accessible to all students by using AI to read the text aloud, adjust the reading level or to translate it into a student’s native language.

Fort Herriman Middle School teacher Kimberly Mendenhall has been surprised by how quickly AI tools generate content.

She and her colleagues used SchoolAI tools to remotely collaborate on a customized digital literacy lesson plan.

“It gave us a lesson plan, and then it was able to, with prompts, give us a worksheet that we could do, and then a ten-question quiz,” she said.

She said the process took just a minute.

Jordan District has been a leader in implementing AI tools, but other school districts and charter schools are finding ways to connect teachers with AI tools. At Providence Hall Middle, a charter school, history teacher Tanya Rauch said when she or her colleagues find a tool that will save them time, they share it with each other.

Rauch, who has a master's degree in technology, regularly uses ChatGPT and MagicSchoolAI to reduce her lesson planning time.

“One of the eighth-grade standards was to compare historians’ interpretations of colonization,” she said. “I don't have time to pull up ten historians—hey, Chat GPT!” West Jordan Middle School Principal Eric Price, a proponent of AI in education, said saving time is the purpose for devel-

Several area teams excel at state championship as Utah’s high school unified soccer program grows

ack-to-back champions.

In any sport, it’s a difficult accomplishment. In the growing sport of unified soccer, it’s remarkable. This year, 54 unified soccer teams competed, up from 30 last year.

Yet Murray High succeeded in that achievement to defend their state championship title.

Murray High junior Mia Cox scored a goal in that title game and was receiving congratulatory hugs and high-fives afterward from her teammates, friends and family, her principal and superintendent.

“It was exciting,” she said. “I like kicking the ball with my friends on the team because it’s fun.”

Unified soccer is a program of Special Olympics Utah in partnership with the Utah High School Activities Association, that joins high school-age students with and without intellectual disabilities playing side-by-side on the same team. Five coed players take to a smaller-sized field in 10-minute halves playing in competitive or player development divisions.

“We had teams from Richfield High School to up in Logan in eight divisions,” said Boston Iacobazzi, Unified Champion School’s college-growth coordinator. “Several schools had two teams and a couple had three.”

Teams first played in local tournaments before they competed in the regional round robin competitions until the top two finishers from each division were determined. The state championships in those divisions played Oct. 10 at the Real Salt Lake stadium.

“It was close competition for a lot of the teams at both the playoffs as well as at the championships. A lot of games went into overtime and ended in PKs, which was exciting,” he said.

At the local tournament in Midvale, Hillcrest High senior Haylee Wardle was all about winning.

“Let’s go!” she encouraged her teammates. “We want to get that gold.”

Wardle, her teammates and coach Rebecca Remy watched as Hillcrest freshman Johnny Bisby brought the torch into the school’s stadium. ASL club members signed the national anthem as well as the athlete’s oath.

“We have a lot of Husky pride and we want everyone to feel that at our school,” said Remy, who has been an assistant during her 20 years teaching, but stepped in as head coach this year. “I love seeing the students in other areas besides academics, witnessing their sportsmanship and inclusion and the unity with their peers, and using their skills on the field. It’s great our drill, band, cheer and a bunch of different clubs and teams are supporting all the unified teams competing.”

In front of hundreds of fans at the RSL stadium, Hunter High junior Whitney Rasmussen took the athlete’s oath and sang the national anthem before joining her team to take a silver medal in their game.

For many student-athletes, it’s an opportunity to not only compete, but also to develop their skills, meet people, see old friends and belong to a team.

“It gives them a place to belong and to represent their school, just like their peers,” Iacobozzi said.

Longtime friends Mia Jackman of Riverton High and Jaymi Bonner of Herriman High gave each other hugs when they saw each other at a tournament, which was supported by Jordan School District’s superintendent.

Mia’s dad, Jared, is thankful for unified sports.

“It gives them the chance to do things that they’re seeing typical kids do and a chance to interact with some of their peers,” he said. “It makes them feel part of the school.”

Jaymi’s mom, Jeana, likes unified sports “enriches everyone’s lives and gives us perspective. It’s about, teamwork and sportsmanship. It’s not only about winning and being the best. That’s a valuable lesson that our kids are teaching us.”

She was warming up at the RSL stadium before both Jordan teams would win their division championships.

“I always play no matter what if I win or not win. I really love playing for my school with my friends,” she said. “At school, we

eat lunch together and practiced our kicking and defense, and how to move left and right.

Then, we hang out.”

Her coach, Jenna Fox, said the school’s program has grown from five students to 22.

“The kids keep telling the incoming freshmen about it, so our numbers are getting bigger,” she said. “We have a developmental team and a more competitive one so we’re getting all abilities playing time and we’ve got some awesome peer tutors who are playing with them. What’s fun is the kids are all friends and they respect each other. So, we play together, we go to class together, we celebrate together.”

and administrators were watching the games along with Canyons School District’s superintendent and other district administrators and school board members.

“Jordan SBOs (student body officers) gave us a send-off. They lined up creating tunnels for us to go through and we got cheered and waved off for state. That was super special for our team,” Fox said. “Having the championships at RSL, it makes them feel like royalty.”

Riverton resident encourages fitness at every age

L

aRee Schuenman always considered herself to be physically fit. Active in high school and college, Schuenman easily practiced a healthy lifestyle. Then she got married, had children and got busy with the ups and downs of life. After many years, she began to experience bouts of anxiety and depression, and realized she’d fallen into a sedentary lifestyle.

Schuenman started a fitness journey, lost weight, gained strength and, eight years ago, turned her passion for wellness into a career.

“I started working for a gym that I loved, and I had a community that I loved and then I started getting more education and ended up getting my degree in exercise after my kids were in school full time,” she said. “Then I went back and finished my degree in exercise science.”

She began to see gaps in the fitness and nutrition industry that contributed to unhealthy practices and mindsets. By creating client-centered coaching and building a supportive community, Schuenman saw people reach their fitness goals easier and faster.

Based on her expertise and research, she created StayFITT to provide encouragement, training and a healthy environment for people to get fit. When COVID hit and gyms were closed throughout the state, Schuenman offered free online classes through Zoom to keep that

group exercise feeling for her clients.

She believes the pandemic shone a light on the necessity of staying active to help alleviate loneliness and disconnection.

“I feel like more people want to be active because they saw the barriers that happened during COVID, like the increase in anxiety and depression and the lack of human connection,” she said. “What I wanted to create [at StayFITT] was having that connection. A coach that actually knows you and it’s not just some YouTube video or random person.”

When she opened her StayFITT location in Riverton (1515 W. 12600 South, # 205), Schuenman realized her dream of owning a science-based training and nutrition center, dedicated to health and wellness for all her clients.

Schuenman is also dedicated to service and regularly participates with and supports several nonprofit organizations, including the Parent Project and the Mascot Miracles Foundation, as a way to give back to the community that has supported her through the years. She also sponsors local schools and created a program for senior citizens to keep them functional for life.

“A lot of these ladies come from physical therapists that have referred them here so they can stay strong and functional and independent for the rest of their life,” she said. “We’ve had

people from all ages and all walks of life…We do personal training and get them up into our group training, for affordability, or continue to do personal training.”

and bridging gaps in the community.

Bear-O Care provides support for adults with multiple disabilities

W

hen Michael Braga and his wife, Ruth, adopted Brandon (Bear) as a newborn, they knew he couldn’t see or hear, and they knew it would be a parenting challenge. What they didn’t know was that Brandon also had CHARGE syndrome, a condition that affects several organ functions, leaving him severely disabled.

As Brandon’s condition progressed, the Bragas knew they had to plan for longterm care for their son who needed to be fed through a tube, wore a diaper and couldn’t communicate effectively.

They had many wonderful caregivers for Brandon, including Trudi O’Brien who is one of a handful of nationally-credentialed interveners in Utah. As Brandon’s intervener, O’Brien worked one-on-one with him, learning how he communicated.

“It was my job to let the world know what he needed and what he wanted, and have the world be able to talk to him,” O’Brien said. “[I] figured out his communication style and built communication around that.”

Once Brandon aged out of the public school system at 22, the Bragas knew they weren’t the only family that faced the challenge of raising an adult with multiple disabilities. They decided to do something to help other families and created the nonprofit Bear-O Care.

To create the most effective program, Michael Braga went to graduate school for deaf/blind education and his wife changed her degree and earned a masters in nursing. They partnered with O’Brien to open Bear-O Care in Riverton (1864 W. 12600 South), serving individuals and families all over the Salt Lake Valley. The center is open Monday through Friday and offers a community approach to caring for disabled individuals while supporting families and caregivers.

The organization’s five paratransit buses pick up participants in the morning and take them to the center where they spend the day being watched over, educated and cared for.

“We’ll bring them in and do therapy and music therapy,” Braga said. “We take them out in the community and do anything they might find interesting, whether that be going to the park, going to a museum or the store, or even go to the bars; whatever a 20-something-year-old adult would enjoy doing.”

In May, Bear-O Care expanded to offer a residential home for men with disabilities who need intensive medical care. The residence in Bluffdale provides space for large gatherings of families and friends, and includes community outings and individual activities.

and caregivers who spend an inordinate amount of time caring for their loved ones.

“We’ve had some clients whose parents have graduated from school because they were able to come here or we have some clients whose parents were able to get back into the workforce who haven’t in years,” Braga said. “We see the rest of the family, the mom and dad and siblings, who are out doing things that they’re normally not able to do because of their severe disabilities. So it’s really nice for us to be able to give them those opportunities.”

“I think our oldest resident is 67 and you’ve got parents who’ve been caregivers from the time that they were born,” O’Brien said. “We’ve got a couple of families who are in their 70s and needed to find a place to put their child where they’re comfortable and safe and happy.

Now they’re able to actually retire which is not something that parents of multiple-disabled kids are able to do.”

Volunteers are always welcome at Bear-O Care, as are donations that help cover costs, including bus repair and replacement. Plus, the residential home is raising funds for an elevator and ramp to the front door. Donations can be made at BearOCare.org.

“We are able to tell parents ‘this is where your child is going to come live now, with people like themselves in a home just for them,’” Braga said. “It’s a big help to parents and families.” l

Animal Control and Code Enforcement By Chief Blair Barfuss In July, the police department integrated with animal services and code enforcement to streamline benefits for our residents. We are excited to have Oscar Juarez and Trish Watson as the newest members of our department.

Oscar Juarez Oscar has been with Riverton City for two years as Riverton’s only code enforcement officer. In recent months, Oscar has successfully helped three residents comply with health and safety codes educating with professional compassion.

Oscar has responded to over 200 calls for service; many of these calls remain open as residents take steps to comply.

Oscar Juarez serves as the Riverton City code enforcement officer and as back up to our animal control officer.

Our code enforcement is responsible for ensuring Riverton City regulations are followed by property and business owners. They inspect properties, respond to complaints, and enforce zoning codes, building standards, and other ordinances.

Their duties include issuing warnings, citations, and fines to ensure the community adheres to safety and aesthetic standards, helping maintain the quality of life in Riverton. Additionally, Oscar serves as back up to our animal control officer.

Trish Watson Since 2018, Trish has served as Riverton’s animal control officer.

She collaborates closely with Stone Ridge Veterinary Clinic to ensure safe return of lost pets and careful placement of found or injured animals. Since July, Trish has reunited 16 animals to their owners and seen six additional animals find new homes. This is quite an accomplish as our only animal control officer.

Animal control officers work to protect and improve the lives of animals and promote responsible pet care within Riverton. Their duties include responding to calls about stray, injured or neglected animals, as well as investigating cases of animal cruelty. They rescue and provide care for animals in distress, enforce animal control laws, and educate the public about responsible pet ownership.

Season ends for Riverton girls soccer with second-round playoff loss

I

n an up-and-down season, the Riverton girls soccer team got a tough draw for its first state playoff game.

The Silverwolves finished fourth in Region 2 with a 6-6 record and ended the regular season with an 8-8 record overall. By getting the 12th seed in the Class 6A state tournament, the Silverwolves got a firstround bye. But that pitted the team against a talented American Fork squad, the fifth seed that eventually would reach the state finals.

Riverton gave a good effort but couldn’t overcome the Cavemen in a 3-1 loss.

Emmalee Christensen had a second-half goal for Riverton, her 11th goal of the year. Unfortunately for Riverton, it couldn’t overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit.

The season ended, giving the team an 8-9 mark.

Riverton had plenty of highs and lows this season, including both winning and losing streaks.

One of the highlights of the season came in the Region 2 opener when Riverton defeated eventual league champion Mountain Ridge 2-1 on the road on Aug. 24.

Riverton also concluded the regular season with a 2-1 victory over Copper Hills. The win denied the Grizzlies a chance to share the region title and knocked them down to

second place in Region 2. Both Riverton goals in that contest came in the first half— one from Christensen (who also had an assist) and one from Marley Johnson.

While the offense didn’t rack up a lot of goals (23), the defense was solid in most outings. The Silverwolves surrendered 31 goals in 17 games and 20 in 12 region games. However, six of those came in one game when Riverton lost to Real Salt Lake Academy 6-3 in a high-scoring game on Aug. 29. Goalie Daisy Johnson had 1.5 shutouts, and Brie Sampson contributed half a shutout.

Christensen was far and away the leading scorer with her 11 goals. The senior ended her career with 22 total goals. Junior Marley Johnson was second on the team with four goals. Junior Ellie Anderson had three goals after scoring 15 a year ago. Another junior, Alli Sorenson, had two goals and two assists this season. Leah Cannon, Xoie Warner and Katie Cole had one goal each. Sophomore Ava Escobedo didn’t find the back of the net this season but had a team-high three assists.

Riverton could be a factor in the region race next season. The team returns the bulk of its key players. Only eight seniors made up the Silverwolves’ 42-player roster. l

The winners of the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools award teach skilled trades, including automotive repair, construction, advanced manufacturing and industrial technology. The program is designed to reward subjects taught in high schools that aren’t often recognized.

“The prize, now in its seventh year, was created to recognize excellent high school skilled trades teachers, a group of educators who are frequently overlooked and underappreciated,” stated the Harbor Freight press release. “Since 2017, the program has awarded more than $7 million to more than 130 teachers and their schools’ programs. The mission of Harbor Freight Tools for Schools® is to increase understanding, support and investment in skilled trades education in U.S. public high schools.”

The Harbor Freight Tools for Schools program was started in 2017 by the owner of Harbor Freight Tools, Eric Smidt.

“We are thrilled to announce our newest group of 25 prizewinning teachers,” Smidt said. “They’ll join the more than 100 teachers across America who are now part of a tight network of outstanding teachers who are working together to lift up excellent skilled trades education. We hope this recognition and support will serve as a catalyst for greater investment in this critical sector.”

The Harbor Freight Tools for Schools program aims to make a difference in trade education as the need rises for professionals in respective trade fields.

“There is a growing shortage of skilled trades professionals in the United States,” Danny Corwin said, executive director of Harbor Freight Tools for Schools. “These incredible teachers are educating the next generation of skilled tradespeople through inventive, handson programs. We are grateful for the work they do every day in classrooms across the country.”

Hales has always loved working with cars and worked at his hometown gas station growing up. This passion for automotive technology, combined with his desire to give back to society, has translated into a career in public education.

“Throughout his teaching career, Hales has kept his automotive and teaching skills current by working outside of school hours at local automotive businesses and teaching at local community colleges,” stated Hales’ Harbor Freight Tools for Schools biography. “He holds 11 Automotive Service Excellence certifications, has been named Adviser of the Year for SkillsUSA Utah, and previously won the Huntsman Award for Excellence in Teaching.”

Hales works hard to keep his class curriculum up to date with the latest technology and state education standards.

“His curriculum is aligned with Weber State University, giving students up to 12 transferable credit hours if they choose to pursue an automotive associate or bachelor’s degree.

Online training used in the program also offers up to 111 industry courses and certificates through Ford ACE, A/C Delco Trainings and SP2. Hales’s students showcase their skills at a variety of competitions as well, including the UVU Auto Expo, Weber State Automotive contests and SkillsUSA regional, state and national competitions.”

founded the "Seasons Chorale & Orchestra." For 17 years, this ensemble has captured hearts, becoming an integral part of the South Valley's holiday tradition.

Managing Grief in the Holidays

Funeral arrangements are a deeply personal choice. Preplanning provides you with the time needed to make practical, detailed decisions that reflect your standards, lifestyle, taste and budget. And we assure you and your family that the choices you make will be carried out as planned.

olidays in grief can be particularly challenging with familiar and sentimental sights, sounds, and smells reminding us our loved one is not here. Because this period of the year is built around relationships, a death in the family can make these weeks very difficult. But rather than attempt to just “grope our way” through these special days, there are ways to grow personally through the holidays as grief becomes transformative for us.

Saying goodbye to a loved one is anything but easy, especially if well-meaning friends and family members expect you to just “get on with your life.” Allow time and space for grieving and crying this holiday season. Keeping a journal can provide a vital opportunity for reflection during the holidays. These weeks will not be the same as before because of the “empty chair” at the table so the pain is inevitable.

A list of favorite holiday activities might be quite lengthy but make that list anyway.

The list might include many holiday traditions such when the house is decorated, when and where worship takes place, and in whose home the family meals are shared. Though it is impossible to do everything “just like when Mom was here,” you can evaluate what you do for the holidays and determine, with your family’s help, which of those traditions you want to preserve.

In evaluating holiday traditions, consider creating something new.

Lighting a special candle, purchasing a unique holiday decoration, providing gifts to a needy family, or hosting an international student can become meaningful holiday traditions.

Well-meaning friends or family may want you to attend parties and gatherings, hoping to “cheer you up” but take control of your schedule and do only as much celebrating as you feel ready to do. Choosing which events to participate in acknowledges that grief is a tiring experience. Even under the best of circumstances, holidays can be taxing so attempting to attend every event, party, or celebration may bring about total exhaustion. Instead, say “no” to some well-intentioned invitations.

Simply remind friends, “My energy level hasn’t returned to where it was before he died; thank you for understanding my need to decline.”

Pay close attention to physical well-being, too. Adequate rest, good nutrition, and moderate exercise is essential for the grief process. Lean meats with fresh fruits and vegetables are better choices than sugar- and fat-laden treats. If your health care provider approves, a brisk walk or other moderate exercise can help you feel better physically and emotionally. And eating a healthy diet coupled with moderate exercise is a remedy for insomnia for many mourners.

Be sure to consider the spiritual aspects of life, too. Because holidays have spiritual roots make sure to include time for worship and reflection during this period.

Volunteering to help others or making a memorial contribution is a meaningful way to put feet to faith during the holiday season.

While it is inevitable to face pain at the holidays, following these suggestions can help bereaved individuals and families find transformative growth during this special season of the year.

here are many ways to honor Utah’s military veterans this month, including volunteering at the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs or the Military and Family Support Center.

Additionally, cities, businesses and organizations in Salt Lake and Davis County will honor Utah’s vets for Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Here are some ways to show appreciation for the vets in the community.

Hark! the Herald Angels Scream

I

t was the Peri Kinder Cabbage Patch Kid Life and Laughter frenzy of '83 and parents had lost their dang minds. I was a young mother and didn’t think my 6-month-old daughter needed the trendy toy of the year, but watching crowds of people attack each other over a doll was inconceivable.

TV news showed Black Friday sales where hundreds of loving parents trampled their friends and neighbors to get one of the elusive Cabbage Patch dolls. I understand wanting to find the perfect present, but having mom arrested the day after Thanksgiving because she shot a store employee with a crossbow doesn’t exactly ring in the holidays.

Each year brought a new toy so necessary and valuable that people went shopping armed with baseball bats and pepper spray to ensure they got the Furby, Beanie Babies, Tickle Me Elmo or Teddy Ruxpin for their child who already had too many toys.

Shoppers expected riots, looting, broken bones and black eyes for every Black Friday sale. News reporters showed videos of chaos, pandemonium and anarchy. If you didn’t get a concussion while saving on bath towels, was it even Black Friday?

I didn’t often participate in Black Friday, although I once waited outside Toys R Us at 5 a.m., in freezing temperatures,

to save $50 on a Barbie Dreamhouse. My early-morning shopping adventures ended when a full-grown adult stole my 8-year-old daughter’s promotional football at Mervyn’s.

If I wanted to experience holiday anxiety, panic and frustration, I didn’t need to shop the Black Friday sales. I could feel all that stress in the comfort of my own home. But now, if there was a Black Friday sale on gas, gluten-free cake mixes or bags of dog food I’d definitely get up at 4 a.m.

Today, Black Friday just isn’t the same. Instead of waiting in line for hours while your toes freeze, people just turn on their phones and cybershop until their fingers bleed. There’s no frenzy, bedlam, fracas, turmoil or mayhem. Not even a hullabaloo. Just scrolling and clicking. Like every other day.

Americans are a wacky bunch. We spend Thanksgiving Day offering appreciation for our abundance and then eat until our livers explode. By midnight, gratitude is over and it’s time to spend until our credit cards warp. Within hours of Thanksgiving dinner, we’re in combat-mode, ready for holiday shopping.

It’s so on-brand for Americans.

Buddhists teach about a realm of hungry ghosts who have large stomachs but tiny mouths. They are tormented by unrelenting cravings that can never be satisfied. A student once asked Buddhist teacher and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh, “What is it like in the realm of hungry ghosts?” he answered, “America.”

Ouch. But accurate.

Because it’s not just Black Friday anymore. It’s Small Business Saturday, Shell Out Sunday, Cyber Monday, TakeAll-My-Money Tuesday and What-Did-I-Even-Buy Wednesday. Social media platforms taunt us with shiny items that

might ease the relentless craving for more. But only for a moment.

Back in 1983, I never imagined how the world would change in 40 years. I thought we’d go on beating each other up for toys until the end of time. I never dreamed we’d be buying holiday gifts online, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on our phones or hanging Christmas lights that could be controlled through an app.

I probably wondered if we’d ever learn that violence isn’t the best way to start the holiday season. Especially a holiday with the catchphrase, “Peace on Earth, goodwill toward men.”

Let’s face it, holiday shopping will always be a jungle.
