VICE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE QUESTION INSPIRED BY A BOOK

E

leven year old Victoria Peck had a question for the vice presidential candidates. She was one of four Utah students whose question was selected as an option for the moderator to ask during the vice presidential debate held in Salt Lake Oct 7.

Victoria’s question, which didn’t end up being used, was: What will you do to help these migrant workers that do so much for our country? I have a home that I love and have settled in. I want migrant worker children to have a home that they can settle in too. All children deserve to be safe and happy.

Victoria, a fifth grader at Midas Creek Elementary, has lived in the same house in Riverton her whole life and has never met a migrant worker. But she did read a book about it.

“In my class, I read a story about a migrant worker girl and it really just showed me that these people need help,” Victoria said.

Amelia’s Road by Linda Jacobs Altman was a language arts assignment. However Victoria’s teacher, Sherri Morrill, often selects literature that incorporates lessons on social studies, civics, or social and emotional learning.

“Reading stories from diverse backgrounds gives students insight and understanding into others’ life experiences,” Morrill said.

Victoria’s mother, Vanessa Peck, similarly encourages her daughter to read books from a variety of perspectives.

“She may never get to meet someone like Amelia, but we can meet them through stories,” Vanessa said. “I think that gives us so much more empathy and compassion for people that are different than us, and helps us with unity in our community.”

Peck was four years old when her parents immigrated to the U.S. from New Zealand for education opportunities. Her family received help from a welcoming and supportive community.

“They didn’t have to help us but they did,” Peck said. “I think there’s always been this feeling of being kind to others and giving them a chance, because we just don’t know where people are in their life.”

Being raised in that environment, Victoria has developed empathy for others.

“She’s very compassionate and she loves little children,” Peck said. “I think that’s why the story appealed to her so much; Because she saw a little child that was hurting, and that there are children

that don’t have a house all the time-they’re constantly moving, constantly at different schools. I think that really touched her heart.”

When Morrill assigned her students to enter the statewide essay contest of the Utah Debate Commission calling for a 300 word essay explaining what question they would ask the vice presidential candidates, Victoria considered asking a question about wildfires. But the situation of migrant workers in the story she’d read weeks earlier was still on her mind.

“I haven’t had many of those experiences, but sometimes we just need to look out for people who are maybe having a hard day,” Victoria said. “And I really like to help people and comfort people.”

One of Morrill’s goals as a teacher is to create educated and involved citizens.

“The debate contest aligned perfectly with this goal,” she said. “Students were each able to investigate topics of importance to them, and use their voice to ask a question.”

She was thrilled when Victoria’s

question was one of four finalists selected out of 700 entries.

“It gives all of us motivation to share our questions and thoughts and know that they can be heard,” she said.

Victoria’s involvement in the debate opened up family discussions about politicians, hard to solve problems and civil discourse.

“None of these questions that the children asked were easy questions to an-

swer,” Vanessa said. “I think it’s good to encourage discussion and to discuss politely.”

Only one of the final four essay winners--Brecklynn Brown, an eighth grader from Springville Junior High-- had their question used in the debate. She asked: How is your presidency going to unite and heal our country? l

Teachers share hobbies for fun learning at Oquirrh Hills Middle

T

eachers at Oquirrh Hills Middle are more than just experts in their subjects-- they are passionate about samurai warriors, conspiracy theories, origami, soccer, mythology, art, movies and Magic the Gathering.

“Our faculty has a wealth of life experience outside of the classroom they are willing to share; many have lived in different countries, some have unique hobbies or skills,” said Principal Donna Hunter.

OHMS teachers share their interests and skills with students through unique enrichment activities- not for a grade but just to connect with kids as human beings. During a daily 35 minute TA period, students have an opportunity to get caught up with their school work. Those without any make-up work to do can participate in fun activities.

“Our hope is that those activities will be so rewarding, that they will do everything they can to keep their grades up, so they don’t get pulled out of their TA for intervention,” Hunter said. “It’s a work in progress, but we just feel like it’s a step in the right direction to make school more kid friendly, so that kids get a chance to just learn for fun.”

PE teacher Andy Marsh said in past years, he’d have five to ten students pulled out of his TA period for interventions. This year’s activities have motivated students to do their work so that they can stay and play in his class.

“I think the most I’ve had pulled out so far has been three,” he said. Students in his TA class, held in the gym, get to play pickleball, flag football or workout on exercise equipment.

TA activities are sometimes related to a teacher’s subject but others are based on their interests in mythology, astronomy or movies.

“I imagined it to be just low key, but some of my teachers are just delighting me

with some of the preparation that they’re doing--just because they want the kids to love what they love,” Hunter said.

Jamie Buttars formed the Kindness Crew with her TA class. Her students decorate lockers for birthdays, write thank you notes and post positive messages around the school to encourage kindness.

“It’s an opportunity for a lot of them to do things they wouldn’t normally do on their own,” Buttars said.

OHMS teachers have expanded their enrichment activities to accommodate students who come on Fridays. This year, students only attend school on Fridays to work with teachers individually or in small groups.

However, those that ride the bus must remain for three hours.

“Those kids may be coming for intervention for one class, but they needed a place to be for the rest of the time they would be here,” Hunter said. “We felt we could capitalize on the enrichment idea by offering learning opportunities that were completely stress free: no cost, no grades or assignments, just fun learning in a variety of different subjects.”

Activities differ every week depending on what teachers want to do, Hunter said.

There have been lectures about samurai warriors, the JFK conspiracy, and remembering 9/11. There have been soccer tournaments

and games of frisbee golf, yoga, meditation, science experiments and a woodburning demonstration.

Marsh hosts a Gamers Guild in which students and teachers discover shared interests as they play board games, video games and card games together. He said the social interaction is important for teens, especially those who tend to play video games alone at home.

Sewing teacher Jamie Buttars opened her classroom one Friday to anyone who wanted to use her sewing machines and supplies. The Friday extension activities, she said, help students develop social skills as well as life skills.

“It gives them the opportunity to explore hobbies and activities they may not have been exposed to before, don’t have the resources for at home or just don’t know how to try,” Buttars said.

Hunter said the Friday activities serve the same purpose as field trips and vacations, providing experiences and vocabulary that expands students’ knowledge base. It also provides students with positive experiences at school and a feeling of connection. And because each activity is limited to 15 participants who follow strict cleaning and social distancing guidelines, it provides a supervised safe place for students to engage in something productive.

Each week, more and more students sign up to attend Friday extension activities.

“We started out with only about 50 kids showing up, the next week was over 100, the third week was over 200, so I think it is catching on,” Hunter said. “With everything kids have had to go through in the past year, from pandemics to earthquakes, I think they need to have some good memories of this year, too.” l

Riverton passes free speech ordinance

o better regulate possible protests or demonstrations, the Riverton City Council passed an ordinance amending the city’s code to peaceably assemble and exercise free speech.

The amendment adds a chapter to the existing code which is aimed to regulate the “time, place and manner” of free speech and peaceably assemble rights.

When presenting the ordinance to the council on Oct. 6, City Attorney Ryan Carter explained the courts have allowed governments “limited authority” over free speech activities.

“Governments legitimately have concerns about maintaining public safety and the ability for people to go about their business while free speech activities take place,” he told the council.

The ordinance, passed unanimously during the Oct. 16 council meeting, requires groups who wish to protest to fill out an application. Leafleting does not require registration.

Carter said city officials are not approving the group’s message or how it’s said, but if the activity will translate into “safety concern, property damage or interfering with the rights of others.”

With tensions high amid protests and incidents occurring this year in Salt Lake City and Cottonwood Heights, city officials said they wanted to facilitate the process whereby demonstrations can remain peaceful.

“We feel like there’s a prescient need for this,” Carter said. “The city’s growing up.

We’ve also had some actual demonstrations start to take place starting in other cities and ending in Riverton...we could be better prepared for them as they occur.”

quires applications be filed 15 days ahead of the planned demonstration. A potential issue considering the spontaneous nature of many protests to occur this year.

Councilwoman Tish Buroker felt that length of time was too long.

“Since the point is to encourage people to tell us, and to support them, I would encourage us to make the ordinance as friendly as possible,” she said.

But Carter said 15 days is the shortest amount of time allowed in the current version of the code.

“Fifteen days is the best I can come up with to strike a balance encouraging people without being too onerous to file an application but at the same time, give (Parks and Public Services Director Sheril) Garn and (Police Chief) Don (Hutson) time to plan,” he said.

The ordinance does allow “short-notice free speech activity” that arises out of events that can’t be reasonably foreseen. This would allow a demonstration provided it does not create a problem of public safety and is in a location not already scheduled for use.

Free speech activities, such as demonstrations, rallies, parades, marches or vigils in public spaces must be done during hours they are open to the public, according to the ordinance. It also states these activities are not allowed in roadways, parking lots, or in front of emergency entrances. Groups or individuals won’t be denied, it states, unless they violate laws, rules in the ordinance or the event conflicts with a scheduled city activity or an already planned free speech activity.

Several councilmembers expressed their approval of the ordinance especially noting it requires groups to clean up after themselves and no violent acts. l

City officials to discuss possibility of ranked choice voting for 2021 elections

new method of voting in elections could potentially come to Riverton for the city’s 2021 elections.

But a lot would need to happen before then.

The Riverton City Council and city officials discussed ranked choice voting at their Oct. 6 council meeting.

Ranked choice voting works like this: instead of choosing one candidate as is currently done, you would instead rank them in first place, second place, and so on. If no candidate reaches 51%, a clear majority, then the candidate with the least votes is eliminated.

Those who voted for the eliminated candidate would then see their votes assigned to their second choice. This continues until one has the majority.

Kory Holdaway, a former state representative who presented the concept to various Salt Lake County cities in 2018, presented it again to the council on Oct. 6. Holdaway now represents Utah Ranked Choice Voting, a nonprofit 501c3, that champions the electoral reform.

Holdaway identifies various benefits to the process.

One would be a more engaged resident, he said. Ranking candidates would require a more informed voter. Second, he suggested campaigns would be more civil. Candidates would want to appeal to as many voters as you can. “The focus would be more on issues than personalities,” he said.

Third, the city would need to run only one election, jettisoning the primary election – held in June – for the general election held in November.

Currently Salt Lake County has reportedly not shown much interest, but Utah County has with Vineyard and Payson both testing out the system for their elections last year.

Holdaway reported that 66% of residents polled found it very easy to use and another 20% found it somewhat easy to use.

Two primary proponents for the system were Councilwomen Tish Buroker and Tawnee McCay. Buroker noted the city’s most recent election had only 36% participation and felt it might be time to try it. McCay pointed to an election race back east that used ranked choice voting where the candidates recommended voting for a specific candidate if they didn’t vote for them.

“I appreciate the civility it can bring to campaigns,” McCay said.

While Councilmen Troy McDougal and Claude Wells asked different questions about the process, Councilman Sheldon Stewart was skeptical pointing out Holdaway is a lobbyist and used to represent a national organization called FairVote, who Stewart felt had a political agenda. Stewart was also concerned about voter fatigue with the process.

Holdaway felt that was a red herring.

“The benefits you see from it far outweigh some of the red herrings that are thrown up.”

McCay also noted that they could do this for the city’s elections in 2021, when her seat is up for reelection. “Try it out on mine,” she said.

Before it can even come to Riverton though, one of three things would need to happen. The county clerk’s office would need to implement it, the city would need to do their elections with Utah County, or contract with another entity.

Holdaway is encouraging cities to send a formal letter of interest to the county clerk’s office to hopefully soften her opposition.

But as of right now, city officials will gather more information on the process independently and bring it back to the council for more discussion at a future date. l

Mountain Ridge volleyball levels up in year two

T

he Mountain Ridge volleyball program has made quite a leap from year one to year two.

Last year, the Sentinels went 12-19 overall, with a 3-9 record in Region play.

This year, they’ve flipped things around, with a 19-7 overall record and a 7-3 region record (with two games left to play).

“We’re happy with where we started and where we’ve come to. We’ve made some good progress,” said assistant coach David Johnston.

Senior outside hitter Sammy Perry leads the team with 323 kills, which is about as much as the next three players combined. She also leads all 5A players in that category.

“Sammy Perry has been outstanding all year. She leads the state in kills. Done a really good job as a leader, as a silent assassin kind of person - who plays really well and keeps our team up,” said Johnston.

Four other seniors have been major contributors this season, including at the all-important positions of setter and libero.

“Brooklynn Fonua, our setter, has done

a really good job moving the ball around,” said Johnston. “Nikki Madden and Olivia Allen bring a lot of energy. And Janessa Olson is our libero, she does a great job, really sees the ball well and controls the back court for us.”

At press time, Mountain Ridge had two remaining games against Lehi (5-2) and Mountain View (4-2) before the start of playoffs.

As opposed to previous years in which the state volleyball playoffs were held at Utah Valley University, the first three rounds of matches will be hosted at the higher-seeded team’s home court. Then the final four will take place at Salt Lake Community College on Nov. 6 and 7. Johnston thinks the Sentinels can “make some noise” during the playoffs.

“I think just enjoying the journey and improving as we’ve gone along and getting ourselves an opportunity to win at the end is something we’re hoping for as we get into state,” said Jonston. l

Changes Coming to 12600 S and Bangerter Highway Intersection By Mayor Trent Staggs Utah was recently ranked as having the best economy in the nation by 24/7 Wall Street. Due to our strong economic state, exciting tourism opportunities and world class amenities, people from all over the world are choosing to relocate to our great state. While we welcome growth, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to proactively plan and provide resources to properly handle this additional growth.

Much of this growth has taken place here in the southwest portion of Salt Lake County. In fact, almost 70% of all the growth taking place in the county since 2000 has taken place in our southwest communities. It is safe to say in decades past that previous leaders did not recognize what growth would be like. This of course has led to inadequate infrastructure and roadways. With no true east/west connection from the west side of the valley to I-15, we often deal with congestion near Bangerter Highway and Mountain View Corridor on 13400 S and 12600 S. In an effort to mitigate some of this congestion, UDOT has listed the conversion of Bangerter Highway into a freeway as one of their top priorities. This includes funding for a much-needed interchange at the crossing of Bangerter Highway and 12600 S here in Riverton.

I am pleased that construction for this project has commenced and over the next few months we will see several significant changes being made.

way, there are a few key timelines that residents should be aware of. To complete the project by Fall 2021, there will be a full closure of 12600 S for east/west travel for six months beginning early next year.

This closure will indeed create a temporary increase in travel time and congestion for residents who use 12600 S as their east/west connection since they will need to find an alternative route of travel.

Riverton City is currently constructing Old Liberty Way at 4150 W and 4050 W to connect 12600 S and 13400 S near Bangerter. Once completed, we hope by June 2021, this road will help mitigate some of the congestion caused by the temporary closure of east/west travel at 12600 S and Bangerter.

It is my hope that during this time,

residents will remain patient and look forward to the benefits that will be delivered by the completion of both of these important projects.

Now, the freeway style interchange at 12600 S and Bangerter is not a fix all for our transportation struggles, but it will help traffic flow significantly. As a city, we will continue to identify roadways and other infrastructure projects that need to be funded to improve traffic flow in our community. By planning for our short-term and long-term futures we will be able provide the infrastructure needed to keep up with the growth we will continue to see for the coming decade.

‘The Point’ is prosperity say city officials

T

hey say it will be an economic boon for generations to come. That’s “The Point.”

“This 700-acres represents hope,” Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox told those gathered outside at a socially distanced, September press conference held where the state prison currently sits. “It’s a multi-generational opportunity we may never see again,” Cox said, adding that the chance to redevelop the state-owned land situated between mass transit and the tech corridor coincides well with the movement to “rethink corrections in this country.” A new prison will be built in the process at a location near the airport, one that was selected in 2015 when redevelopment plans began.

Draper Mayor Troy Walker called it “the win-win of our time.” Walker said the current prison is antiquated while the new prison will be cheaper to operate and safer for those who staff it. “Instead of being a prison, it will be a place of correction,” he said. Since the beginning of his involvement with planning for redevelopment of the site located in his city’s boundaries, Walker has envisioned a place you can get into and out of without owning a vehicle, thus helping with issues of air quality and traffic congestion, all while bringing economic prosperity to the area. “This is going to be awesome…world class,” he said.

The project has been named The Point.

Where currently the landscape is dominated by concrete and barbed wire, local leaders and politicians envision an “innova-

tion hub” with technological advancement, cutting-edge jobs and varied employment opportunities, mixed-use development including residences, shops and restaurants, parks and open space. In addition to the stateowned 700 acres where the prison currently sits, there are 20,000 undeveloped acres in the area that will also be developed as part of The Point.

The Point of the Mountain Development Commission projects that by 2050, benefits from the proper development of the area could result in 150,000 new high-paying jobs across the Wasatch Front, an average annual income increase of $10,000 to Wasatch Front households, and an increase of billions of dollars in state and municipal revenues.

Alan Matheson serves as Executive Director of The Point. Matheson called it one of the best development opportunities in the entire country. “Now we need the imagination and will equal to that opportunity,” Matheson said. To that end, he announced that The Point of the Mountain State Land Authority Board hired Steve Kellenberg, a nationally renowned expert on sustainable communities. Kellenberg has been tasked with creating a master plan for the site. His resume includes large-scale developments around the world including the Middle East, China, Singapore and South America. “We can create a model others can follow, with cutting edge, world-class jobs so our young people can

stay here, close to family,” Matheson said.

Following the hiring of Kellenberg, Matheson indicated the next step will be hiring a planning team from a worldwide search.

“We’ll select the top firm to start beginning in 2021,” he said. Implementation of that plan will happen in 2022 and beyond.

According to The Point’s officials, Utah has the youngest population in the country, making for a young and digitally competent workforce. They feel that workforce will thrive in the job markets of the future, and that The Point is the perfect location for a great deal of that growth because it is situated between Salt Lake and Utah counties, both projected to grow to a population of 1.5 million people each by 2060.

Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said she greatly values that she can get to Draper, Herriman, Magna and back to Salt Lake City easily, but she knows that’s not the case for many cities in the nation. “We need to move throughout our county. We can’t be socked in because that would be the failure of us all. Our land use is tied to our economic success,” Wilson said.

his year’s general election is on Nov. 3, with all mail-in ballots needing to be postmarked by Nov. 2. If you live in Salt Lake County, you have over 70 things to vote on. Needless to say, this is a big election year.

Covering all 70 ballot measures would take up this entire newspaper, so here are a few highlights.

Registered voters within Salt Lake County will be voting on: three Federal Representatives, Utah State Governor, Utah Attorney General, Utah State Auditor, Utah State Treasurer, six State Senators, 27 State Representatives, Salt Lake County Mayor, four County Councilmembers, County Assessor, County Recorder, Country Surveyor, and 22 school board positions. In addition, there are 18 District Judges to determine retention for and seven Constitutional Amendments.

Each of the seven constitutional amendments propose changes to the written Utah Constitution. Each of these ballot measures needs approval from more than half of Utah voters in order to be amended.

If passed, Constitutional Amendment A would change all gender-specific terms such as “men,” to gender neutral terms such a “persons” in the Utah Constitution.

If passed, Constitutional Amendment B will change the requirements for eligibility of serving as a senator or representative. In Utah, a person must be a citizen of the United States, 25 years old, and a qualified voter in their district. Currently, a person must meet these requirements by the time they are elected. With this revision, a person would not need to meet these requirements beforehand.

If Constitutional Amendment C is

passed, changes will be made to the state’s ban on slavery and involuntary servitude.

The only conditions in which this is currently acceptable is in punishment for a crime.

If passed, this condition will be removed so slavery and involuntary servitude are completely banned.

If passed, Constitutional Amendment D would allow local municipalities to define their own water service area boundaries and set their own terms of water service area.

This amendment also addresses a handful of various points related to water rights within local municipalities.

All four of these constitutional amendment measures were unanimously voted in favor of by every state senator and representative who were in attendance for the appropriate legislative vote. If passed by the public, all revisions will take effect on Jan. 1, 2021.

If passed, Constitutional Amendment E will preserve an individual’s right to hunt and fish. In addition, the related amendment will establish public hunting and fishing as the preferred way of managing and controlling wildlife. Twenty-one senators voted in favor of this amendment, with seven opposed. Fifty-nine representatives voted in favor of this amendment, with 11 opposed.

If passed, Constitutional Amendment F will allow the general session of the Utah Legislature to begin on a date set by the legislature, instead of the fourth Monday in January. It will also allow the legislature not to include state holidays that are not also federal holidays in their 45-day session.

If passed, Constitutional Amendment G will allow government funding accrued through income taxes or a tax on intangible

property to be spent on supporting children and supporting people with a disability.

Dependent on location, there are around 18 judges to vote on with this ballot. In Utah, the public votes for whether a judge may serve another term in office. This generally comes after three years of service. If retention is approved by voters, Supreme Court justices serve 10-year terms and all other judges serve 6-year terms.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Nov. 3. While some polling locations will be closed due to the global pandemic, every county will have at least one polling location.

Ghosting ghosts

A

s the Halloween season looms near, the fear of supernatural beings does too.

Decorations remind us of the existence of ghosts, vampires, goblins, werewolves, and other non-human creatures. We may even become a bit more startled by that unexplained noise in the middle of the night. We might wonder if others from beyond share our space.

There are many stories, myths, and folklores concerning ghosts throughout historical contexts. The common foundational plot for all these tales is a spirit has moved on from its original form and is now somewhere between our world and the afterlife. Some lore focuses on the ghosts of animals and objects, but let’s focus on the human ghosts for now.

Ghosts may be noticed through electromagnetic interference, a drop in temperature, items moving seemingly on their own, unrecognizable whispers or other audio abnormalities, and/or environmental features like fire, water, electricity, and wind behaving rather strangely.

“Ghost Adventures,” a 19-season television show, sends out a crew to investigate hauntings. The crew members commonly have a variety of tools to help them locate ghosts through the avenues mentioned above.

They even created their own device called the Extra Investigator Box which detects

magnetic, infrared, and other physical events.

If you’re not a star on this Travel Channel show, there are a few household devices that can help detect a ghost. Thermometers, infrared cameras, and motion detectors can be used to detect temperature changes and minimal motion changes. A tape recorder can be used to convert communication outside of our perceptual field into sensations humans can understand.

Ghosts are often believed to be attached to a place, item or person. There are varying stories about why and or how ghosts stick around, but regardless, they often do. Some cultures around the world welcome these ghosts, as they are believed to be visiting family members or other loved ones.

In America, we often do not welcome ghosts and try to rid them from our spaces.

If you do suspect a ghost to be in your space and wish to remove them, perhaps helping it to move on, what can you do? There are a few different recommendations from varying sources for getting rid of a ghost. Before I dive into a few, let me provide a word of

caution. When dealing with the supernatural, always do your research, be respectful and cautious, and stay aware.

If you’re convinced a ghost is in your space, you might figure out why it’s there in the first place. Some believe a ghost can become attached to an item, location, or person, continually haunting them. Another belief is that a ghost has unfinished business. If possible, determine why a ghost is still lingering and then the more effective course of action would be to help the ghost resolve their business.

However, if it’s impossible to figure out why a ghost is hanging around, there are some possible actions. A popular television series worldwide with 15 seasons in just as many years, “Supernatural,” shows audiences how “hunters” track monstrous creatures and rids them from this earthly plane. “Supernatural” shows perpetuate the idea that ghosts can be temporary eliminated with salt and iron. It is commonly believed that supernatural beings are aversive to salt. If known, hunters will try to salt or burn the bones or item the ghost is attached to.

In addition, ghost-repelling spells are used in “Supernatural” when other avenues of riding a ghost fail to work, along with holy water. A common lore throughout contexts is that ghosts cannot enter or be on holy ground.

Suggestions from entertainment and television should be taken with a grain of salt though (no pun intended). Outside of enter-

tainment, momentary interaction may be recommended.

If you suspect a ghost is frequently hanging around, it may not be malicious. In which case, it is possible to speak directly to them.

When talking to a ghost, experts believe it is important to set boundaries, be assertive, respectfully ask them to stop bothering you and confidently let them know that they are not welcome in the space. After interacting, do not do it again.

If a ghost still lingers, it may be best to seek out professional help for a ritual or ceremony. Or, alternatively, remove yourself from the space by moving out. l

Kids make history with COVID Memory Project

hat was daily life like for kids living through the last global pandemic? We don’t really know.

“There are very few written accounts of the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic; we have pictures, but very few accounts of how people handled their regular lives,” Copper Hills High history teacher Lorna Murray said. “We are not going to make that mistake again.

Personal accounts are essential for understanding not only the past, but also the present when the past gets repeated, such as this pandemic. Hopefully, a pandemic is a oncein-a-lifetime experience. We must leave a better record behind us than what we got in 1918.”

Murray assigned her history students last spring and again this fall to share their personal experiences of living through this COVID-19 pandemic with The Utah Division of State History. Historical Collections Curator Lisa Barr is heading up a collection of primary source accounts from K-12 students. Young people are invited to share their pandemic experience—how it has affected their school, family, extracurricular activities and lifestyle. Kids can answer a questionnaire or submit journal entries, artwork or photographs which will all become part of a permanent collection in the state archives.

“We have access and ability to collect this info in a way they couldn’t 100 years ago,” Barr said. “Technology has so much to do with the way we’re navigating the pandemic and kids are very savvy to that.”

tive of how the pandemic is affecting them differently. The mood of the entries has varied, from the shock of changes in spring to the “new normal” by autumn. Some express frustration, others optimism.

A 12 year old wrote:“We’ve had to wear masks now. And we have had a ton of deaths.

I didn’t leave my house to do anything except go on a walk or bike ride with my family. It was weird being home so much.”

A 14 year old wrote: “I have many negative impacts from the pandemic, but I think that the biggest impacts on me are isolation from friends and extended family members, as well as cancellation of sports, clubs, and school. I could go on and on but I think that it is safe to say that the pandemic is one of the worst and best things I have experienced.”

Common themes in submissions so far have been students missing teachers, friends and family and missing out on end-of-theyear school activities and family traditions.

One child shared: “Before the pandemic I would play baseball every Friday, Saturday or Sunday. And if I got lucky, all three days in a row...I still play baseball, but only with my parents. We go to empty parks and stay at least six feet away from people and it’s still fun...My family and I would go to a Dodgers game once a year, it’s kinda like a tradition but this will be the first year in a long time we won’t be able to go.”

A 12 year old wrote: “During quarantine my grandparents would do drive-by visits.

We also did some door drop-off surprises for my cousins. We did lots of Facetime and texting. Once we were free to get out of our houses, we did a lot of activities together. I

missed seeing my grandparents and cousins.”

Students have also shared how they’re discovering things about themselves they wouldn’t have known—like learning better online or strengthening family relationships.

“I have been learning how to cook more complex meals...and I’ve been getting more into art recently,” said one child.

A teenager wrote: “I have recently started learning how to play the ukulele again.

I have also learned some new tricks on the trampoline. I think that I have gotten better with house chores.”

Another wrote: “I’ve been a better person then I could’ve been. I’ve learned to get along with my little brothers. I’ve also had lots of time to spend with my big brother and we talked a lot. I enjoyed being with my family.”

Barr said this project gets kids excited about history.

“A lot of time, in order to get history to matter for people, you have to make it personal and so this is a great opportunity to do that,” Barr said.

Joy Anderson, who teaches U.S. history at Oquirrh Hills Middle School, agrees.

“It is always beneficial to have a perspective that students can truly relate to,” Anderson said. “If they see something from someone their own age, they always pay more attention to it than an adult’s perspective.”

Anderson, who also assigned her students to submit entries for the collection, said her students will someday be answering these questions for their children or grandchildren for their history class. She said it is almost impossible to find primary sources from a young person’s perspective for her class con-

tent so a collection of this kind will be helpful for future teachers.

So, in 100 years, students will be able to study this entry written by a 13 year old in the early months of the pandemic: “We have to be by each other all the time. My older sister and I try to hide in our rooms as much as we can. I also try to go outside and swing alone. I play a lot of video games or watch TV….People don’t visit each other anymore in my neighborhood. It has affected our state because we can’t go to school or church so a lot of people just stay home all day.”

Some entries provided advice to future generations facing a pandemic: “It changes your life. You realize all the blessings you have and are thankful for your health. I believe it’s a great thing that happened to slow us down in life.”

“I would want future generations to know that something like this truly changes your life! To experience something like this, well, it is really tough. It’s not easy. But, I do think maybe this will shape my future in a good way. So, never give up!”

“Sure we have to wear a mask but it does not mask who we are or how we act. Some people exaggerate corona just a little bit, just a little...If people like me look on the bright side and see things from a different point of view, we realize that we are ok. We still get to do fun things and we can still learn things like normal.”

Barr said they will collect submissions as long as the pandemic continues. The submissions will be digitized and stored as part of a special collections archive which will be available for public research or, possibly, a public special exhibit in the future. l

Thanksgiving culinary traditions and adaptions in 2020

raditions of Thanksgiving, in terms of celebrations and foods served, has usually varied across cultures and regions in the U.S., and includes modern twists and trends.

Utah is known for some unique holiday dishes that are both embraced as favorites and rejected by locals and newcomers alike with an either “love them or hate them” mentality.

Levi Meyers, originally from Salt Lake and now living in Kanab, said he remembers two staple dishes at the Thanksgiving table when he was growing up — funeral potatoes and cottage cheese Jell-O, but he has not elected to continue the tradition of serving or eating either as an adult. His partner, Christelle DelPrete, also of Kanab and originally from Rhode Island, said that they don’t “really celebrate Thanksgiving,” but if invited to a Thanksgiving meal she brings her own contribution. “As a vegan, I try to find a vegan pumpkin pie recipe online. Vegan crust is tough. I’ve yet to make one I’d recommend, but the filling is generally easy and tasty,” she said.

Funeral potatoes generally consist of grated potatoes, sour cream, cheddar cheese, butter, cream of chicken soup and frosted flakes. They are so much of a staple of culture here that according to a Thanksgiving Utah.com article some local restaurants have

adapted their own “foodie” versions. The name seems to derive from what one would expect, the dish being served at funerals and sent to grieving families, particularly within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints community. Cottage cheese Jell-O recipes vary, but most consist of lime Jell-O, cottage cheese, Miracle Whip, pineapple and pecans, while other fruits and nuts may be substituted or added. Starr Wahlen of Cottonwood Heights, originally from New York State, said she makes cottage cheese Jell-O “sometimes,” but prefers another local favorite, sweet potato and marshmallow casserole, “but without the marshmallows.”

Another local and distinctive Thanksgiving and winter holiday beverage is root beer and eggnog, which is somewhat comparable to a root beer float, but with a nutmeg flavor and overall spicier taste. Several recipes can be found online on sites like allrecipes.com with some replacing ginger beer or cola for the root beer.

Of course, Thanksgiving isn’t all about the food and drinks and is known for a time to gather together. Dixie-Jo Loveless of Eden said one tradition they have tried to uphold every year is “inviting those who have no one near.”

With social distancing, travel restric-

tions, and group gatherings limited in numbers, there certainly will be more Zoom and FaceTime Thanksgiving celebrations this year, but overall we all hopefully can find reasons to celebrate and be grateful. Wahlen

Utah National Guard takes to the skies to fight California wildfires

A

s unprecedented wildfires raged in California at the end of August, the Utah National Guard was ready to offer what assistance it could.

When guard members answered the call to assist in California, the National Guard’s 97th Aviation Troop Command, 2nd General

Support Aviation Battalion, 211th Aviation Regiment was acting on a request from California through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact. The EMAC is a mutual-aid agreement between states, coordinated through state emergency management agencies. The compact means that “any state can

request support from other states if they need it,” said Lt. Colonel Jeremy Tannahill, who led the Utah detachment supporting Californians in their fight against wildfires. “For instance, if Utah had an earthquake, and our forces couldn’t respond appropriately, forces from other states might be called in.”

The Utah detachment arrived in California with two UH-60L Black Hawk helicopters and nine soldiers. After departing Aug. 27 from the Army Aviation Support Facility in West Jordan, the soldiers participated in two days of training with an expert forest service firefighter in California. For the next week, they staged out of a helibase in Red Bluff, California (about 100 miles north of Sacramento). Each day, they flew the helicopters from a small reservoir, where they would fill up with 600 gallons of water, which they would transport to a designated location and dump it on the fire. They flew for 14 hours per day.

The object of the mission was not so much to eradicate the fire as it was to cool down the fire so that ground crews could fight it more effectively, said Tannahill. Their aim was to “buy time” for people on the ground.

Tannahill said they were able to save at least As of Sept. 14, California wildfires had burned an estimated 3.2 million acres, an area roughly the size of one cabin and one dozer driver.

dangerous, Tannahill said he and his crew never felt their lives were in imminent danger. “We’re very well trained,” he said. “We are risk-averse enough to not put ourselves in a situation when we’re in jeopardy. We are flying helicopters at the edge of their limits and at the edge of our limits as pilots. But we know what we’re doing. And command did a great job at getting us the resources we needed.”

Though the Utah detachment was initially booked for 14 days, Tannahill reported they “started to get a handle on the fires” after only eight days and were able to return home early. “I don’t know the overall strategy,” he said. His crew was playing a small part in a much larger plan.

What stands out in Tannahill’s mind, though, was not the drama or the danger of the mission, but the camaraderie and support of the crew he worked with. Some canceled family vacations when the call came in from California. One has missed the opportunity to spend the last four holidays with family for his training.

“It amazes me every time how willing and ready our National Guard soldiers are to stand up and serve,” he said. “I’ve been doing it for a lot of years, and it blows my mind every time.” l

Falling Apart

Well, 2020 finally broke me. I’m overwhelmed, worried about COVID, stressed about the election, climate change, immigration and poverty, and disillusioned to learn Ellen DeGeneres is an actress. It feels like someone shook Pandora’s Box 2.0 like a maraca, releasing sadness, greed and hubris.

I started this column dozens of times, but it feels like my funny is numb. I’d begin writing but devolve into an angry rant where I’m pounding the keyboard like a furious Elton John. I’ve gone feral.

During yoga, I asked my students for advice on how to find my funny. They suggested sharing recipes for Doomsday Survival beverages like Meltdown Mimosas and Disaster Daquiris. I’m afraid if I start researching drinks, I’d sober up around Groundhog Day. (If there is a Groundhog Day in 2021.)

I’m run through a gamut of feelings, enough emotions to create a second or third generation of Snow White’s Seven Dwarfs. I start each day with Hangry then work my way through Weepy, Lonely, Screamy, Worry, Panic and Gloomy. My husband never knows which Peri he’ll bump into when we pass in the hall. It makes everyday discussions a bit wobbly.

Hubbie: What sounds good for dinner?

Me: We’re on a spinning planet, slowly moving toward the sun where we’ll be consumed like a fly in a bug zapper.

Hubbie: So . . . enchiladas?

Americans are resilient, right? We’ve been through tough times, right?

We’ll come together and make the best decisions for our country . . . oh, who am I kidding?

I started screaming at the moon every night like some kind of demon weredog. I’m sure my neighbors are terrified. (Sidenote: I hope someone who’s been living in a bunker since Y2K finally emerged this year to see if it’s safe to come out. Joke’s on them.)

My meditation practice has become a slow descent into madness.

But then.

I zoom in close and watch my grandkids teach a disinterested dog to roll over. I see myriad kindnesses in my life like chocolate, warm blankets and Disaster Daquiris. I zoom out and witness this beautiful world with its billions of people just doing the best they can. Compassion is abundant.

I talk to the trees (literally). I smell pumpkin spice (everywhere). I hike through gorgeous canyons, watching leaves release their grip on branches and freefall to the ground. The stillness settles my thoughts.

I don’t know if you’ll read this before or after the election. I don’t know if we’re facing martial law, a presidential coup or (finally) an alien invasion.

But I know optimism feels better than despair.

We can continue to Catastrophe Scroll though vile social media posts, created by friendless trolls with no sense of humor and a serious case of ringworm, or we can turn off our phones and relearn what “community” means.

One day soon, we’ll have to acknowledge the friendships we’ve lost, the unnecessary arguments we waged and the times we refused to back down. It will be a political hangover of epic proportions, especially if you’ve been drinking Calamity Cosmopolitans.

Those who follow my social media platforms know where I stand politically, and it’s easy to look at the rage in the world and point fingers at The Other Side.

I can stop the blame game, but I won’t stop calling for equality, justice and inclusion in places it doesn’t exist. We must remember that Hope remained in Pandora’s Box. It’s our job to nurture it.

VICE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE QUESTION INSPIRED BY A BOOK

leven year old Victoria Peck had a question for the vice presidential candidates. She was one of four Utah students whose question was selected as an option for the moderator to ask during the vice presidential debate held in Salt Lake Oct 7.

Victoria’s question, which didn’t end up being used, was: What will you do to help these migrant workers that do so much for our country? I have a home that I love and have settled in. I want migrant worker children to have a home that they can settle in too. All children deserve to be safe and happy.

Victoria, a fifth grader at Midas Creek Elementary, has lived in the same house in Riverton her whole life and has never met a migrant worker. But she did read a book about it.

“In my class, I read a story about a migrant worker girl and it really just showed me that these people need help,” Victoria said.

Amelia’s Road by Linda Jacobs Altman was a language arts assignment. However Victoria’s teacher, Sherri Morrill, often selects literature that incorporates lessons on social studies, civics, or social and emotional learning.

“Reading stories from diverse backgrounds gives students insight and understanding into others’ life experiences,” Morrill said.

Victoria’s mother, Vanessa Peck, similarly encourages her daughter to read books from a variety of perspectives.
