I

n the musical “School of Rock,” Dewey Finn, a crazy, passionate, wannabe rock star, pretends to be a school teacher and organizes his students into a rock band. James Densley, who is playing the role of Dewey in Hale Centre Theatre’s production, is an actual school teacher—the band teacher at Mountain Ridge High School.

MRHS junior Greg Olsen said Densley is similar to the character Dewey, who is unfailingly passionate about music.

“He’s very energetic all the time,” Olsen said. “Densley is very passionate about music and his enthusiasm as a band director is contagious.”

Densley said the role does feel very familiar.

“Being a teacher in real life, specifically teaching band and music, I feel the same synergy and energy when I’m pretending to teach music to these kids on stage,” Densley said. “I try to be fun and really engaging and interactive with students in real life, just like I do on stage.”

Densley also has a special connection to the show.

At age 10, he auditioned to be one of the kids in the 2003 “School of Rock” movie, starring Jack Black. He got a callback but was not cast in the movie. However, the experience became a special memory for him and his mom.

A performer herself, Densley’s mom surrounded him with music, encouraged him to audition and to pursue his passion for music, always believing he would be famous someday.

Wrestling champion (and middle linebacker) thrives while living with autism

W

hen you see 16-year-old Charlise Matsuda, she may be sporting her Summit Academy team swag. Like most teenagers, she is busy balancing her studies and practicing her skills as an athlete. It is likely that you will see her on a grassy field practicing or in a gym training. What may not be so visible is that Charlise also lives with autism, as do her two older brothers Eli, 18, and Darius, 20. Yet despite this, there is more to Charlise, she is a daughter, a sister, a student, an athlete, a competitor, a champion and a coach.

Upon entering preschool, Charlise was considered deaf and mute, unable to speak the way her peers were. After being diagnosed with autism at age 3, Charlise has found her way into adolescence and into the world of football and wrestling. While both Charlise and her father, Jarom Matsuda, admitted that they don’t consider their family to be a “sports family,” she has nevertheless had some extraordinary experiences as an athlete. A middle linebacker for the Summit Academy boy’s football program, and a quarter back for the all-girls Utah tackle football team, the Bone Crushers, she is also a near 4.0 GPA student. All the while, living with autism.

“It’s not like I necessarily have a fear of saying I’m autistic,” Charlise said. “It’s not the first thing you need to know about me.”

When she’s not busy with football, Charlise’s time and attention is on wrestling.

In February, Charlise won first place in her weight class at the 3A state championships after only one year of competing in high school. What began as a hobby six years ago in Colorado, where the family lived prior to moving to Utah, quickly turned into a passion. Even though her parents had no experience with the sport, and even with all the

losses that came early on, she remained dedicated and followed the family rule of never quitting once you start.

“It was confusing at first, I lost every match and every tournament and it was frustrating for me,” Charlise said. “I had to keep going ‘cause I never quit, my parents taught me not to quit.”

Early on in the most recent wrestling season, Charlise lost four matches in a row by pin, meaning her opponent was able to put both of Charlise’s shoulders in contact with the mat for two seconds.

The losses were hard, but she used them as a motivator to learn and become better for the next match. Summit Academy wrestling coach Tyler Wagner had no idea about Charlise’s autism for at least a month into the training season. Wagner described the only girl on the boy’s wrestling team as tough and tenacious, never sitting out if things are hard and never complaining.

“It was cool to have her on our team,” Wagner said. “Failure does not seem to bother her, she is always battling though.”

Wagner said that the other teammates really supported and helped Charlise throughout the season and hopes other girls will see what Charlise has accomplished and want to follow suit.

Charlise has found a place within her school community to belong and sometimes that can be hard for those living with autism. It can also be hard for parents of autistic children to know how to fit in as well.

Matsuda said that having three children diagnosed with autism has better equipped his family to know how to understand others and how to help others succeed. Matsuda admitted that early on he did a lot of things wrong when it came to parenting children living with autism.

“We had to throw out the entire playbook and start from scratch,” Matsuda said.

“We realized that the things we did that we thought were good and right and good parenting were not what our kids needed.”

One of the things that Matsuda and his wife learned was that traditional public school was not the right fit for their kids. Although the family resides in South Jordan, the decision was made to enroll the kids in Summit Academy in Bluffdale for smaller class sizes. Charlise will graduate in 2024.

“In our family we have chosen to celebrate it rather than treat it as anything negative,” Matsuda said. “Everyone has chal-

“H

ave you seen this along the Jordan River? ¿Ha visto esto al lado del Río Jordan,” asks a chalk-drawn parody of a wanted poster, with arrows pointing to a whittled, carved-out tree trunk.

These wanted posters aren’t meant to apprehend a fugitive, and the suspect at large is not going to face criminal charges.

Instead, biologists with Tracy Aviary’s Birds and Beavers program are asking trail users along the Jordan River to help collect data that will be used to make connections between beaver activity and bird habitats.

If a trail user spots a nibbled, chewed, or chomped tree, known as beaver gnawing traces, they are asked to take a photo, note the location and text it to the aptly-named Beaver Hotline. Trail users can find examples of gnawing traces on the Birds and Beavers website, along with an interactive map pinpointing beaver activity.

Birds and Beavers is a bilingual community science project that launched in April 2021 and is headquartered at Tracy Aviary’s Jordan River Nature Center. “Some families who live close to or along the river speak Spanish, and we want to be an inclusive project that motivates residents to go outside and walk the trails and look for beaver activity,” says Frances Ngo, the lead conservation outreach biologist on the project.

Cities like West Valley City, with an approximate 38% Latino population, inhabit a large stretch along the Jordan River. According to experts, Latino communities in urban areas are often underserved when it comes to environmental education and outreach. Ngo hopes Birds and Beavers will encourage all residents to participate in outdoor activities and wildlife preservation.

The trail user photo project and resulting data is part of the three phases of the program that include identifying beaver activity, monitoring beaver activity, and educating the public and government agencies with the findings.

To date, trail users have submitted photos of beaver gnawing traces from as far south as Spanish Fork to just above West 2300 North Street in North Salt Lake City.

“We are primarily interested in how beaver activity interplays with bird habitat,” Ngo said. “Beavers are a native species prevalent along the Jordan River. They are known as ecosystem engineers because they can alter habitats by creating lush ponds, generating deadfall that attracts bugs, which in turn attracts birds, and facilitating the return of other species to an ecosystem.”

Over 200 species of birds, including migratory birds, call the Jordan River home.

Protecting trees or leaving fallen trees in certain areas is important for resident birds as they provide places to hunt and nest and insects to eat. Ngo and her colleagues are using the Beaver Hotline photos to assess

Beavers eat tree bark and the softer growing tissue under the bark, called cambium, and they prefer soft-wooded trees like native cottonwoods. A beaver can gnaw the entire circumference of a tree, called girdling, leaving an hour-glass shaped trunk with visible teeth marks.

Once a tree has been girdled, it is in danger of dying because it cannot get the nutrients it needs through its narrowed trunk.

Some larger cottonwoods need to be protected from too much beaver munching, so Ngo and her colleagues and volunteers have been wrapping endangered trees with chicken wire to encourage the beavers to feast on other species of trees, like the invasive Russian olive tree.

Ngo hopes to install motion-activated cameras in the future to continue monitoring beaver activity and to specifically see how long beavers dine at each tree before moving on to a new one. This data will inform city and county management efforts so they don’t remove dead trees and debris, called snags, too soon. “If we see perching, nesting or decomposers occupying areas, we don’t want to see the removal of snags,” Ngo said, adding, “Flickers, for example, create nests in dead trees, and if we remove those dead trees, we remove potential bird habitats.”

One sunny morning in early April, Ngo, with binoculars hanging around her neck, and Millcreek District 1 Councilmember Silvia Catten, set off from the General Holm parking onto the Jordan River Trail to look for new beaver activity.

Almost immediately, Ngo spotted a muskrat lounging on a log in the river. American coots, a duck-like bird that is not a duck, paddled down the river in pursuit of aquatic vegetation. “Did you hear that?” asked Ngo, excitedly. “That is an American kingfisher.”

In a few more steps, Catten spotted teardrop shapes hanging from branches high in a cottonwood tree. “Those are oriole nests,” informed Ngo, “they build new ones every year.” Excitedly, the pair continued south on the trail. “I bet most people don’t know about the myriad species of birds that live on or around the river, or that there is a population of beavers right through the middle of the valley,” said Catten.

Catten, who is also a vice chair on the Jordan River Commission, has taken an interest in the conservation and protection of the Jordan River “as a place for wildlife, open space, recreation and beauty in our urban landscape.” Millcreek, 16 other cities and two counties are members of the Jordan River Commission, which helps fund conservation, planning, education, and recreational efforts around and on the river. “Millcreek is planning to complete a trail—a loop—on the east side of the water that connects to the existing Jordan River Trail,” Catten said, adding that “while a lot of the work for Millcreek’s portion was completed last year, we are awaiting funding to finish the loop access to our portion. We’re hopeful it will be complete within the next few years.”

Ngo said that as part of the education phase of the program, they will offer guided and self-guided beaver tours and install interpretative signage along the trails.

Catten and Ngo headed south where the meandering trail led them to a small meadow, in the middle of which stood a large cottonwood tree with recent beaver chew marks. To the left was another dined-upon tree, and to the right an abandoned dinner spot. Across the river were more trees with beaver gnawing traces.

While Millcreek touches a small portion of the Jordan River, cities with larger portions of the river have led conservation efforts, and according to Catten, “When we became a city we wanted to follow suit and be good stewards, too. We have a relatively small portion of the river and we are so lucky to have bordering municipalities that

manage their portion of the river so well, like Murray. Our portion has benefited from that for sure. Our goal is to be a vested partner with the agencies, like the Jordan River Commission, who take prudent care to plan for the conservation of the river as a whole.

It’s our job to help as we can, even if it’s just for our tiny portion.”

As for the Birds and Beavers program, Catten believes “the knowledge gained from programs like this one does have a wider reach as I see it—the trees, plants, and weed management plans affect the wildlife, so as far as what might guide future plans for conservation, understanding the broader ecosystem is always helpful.”

Ngo and Catten took a photo of the beaver gnawing trace they discovered and sent it to the Beaver Hotline for Ngo to plot on the map.

Ball in: First state unified basketball tournament provides inclusion, belonging in high schools

I

n its first unified basketball season, Herriman High brought home ribbons from playing at the state tournament.

But it was more than that.

It was an opportunity for inclusion, partnership and belonging, said First Lady Abby Cox, who supports unified sports through her Show Up initiative.

“Every student has a chance to be included and every student gets the chance to compete,” she said at the opening ceremony of the state unified basketball tournament, where 32 teams played against each other — and sometimes, played together — for a chance to represent their team and school for a ribbon or medal.

“There was a moment in the state tournament where one of the players on the other team came over to our kid who made a basket and gave our player a big hug,” Herriman High coach Jill Ames said. “He was so happy for him and just wanted everyone to score. I’m competitive and I want to win, but to be a part of a basketball game where there’s really no one yelling at you, or at the refs or at each other, and everyone is there wanting to see each other succeed and do their best, that was just amazing.”

The tournament included co-ed athletes from 25 high schools running through a gauntlet of Utah Jazz and Weber State cheer squads and professional teams’ mascots, all there to support unified sports.

It is the first high school state tournament, said Unified Champion Schools manager Courtnie Worthen. During preCOVID-19 years, the tournament was held for community teams vying for the state title.

The 2020 tournament, which was planned to be a statewide event, was canceled because of the pandemic, and last year, regional competitions were held in place of a state tournament to reduce the numbers and possible spread of the virus.

Worthen said after the statewide soccer tournament last fall, which was held at Rio Tinto stadium and had the support of Real Salt Lake, interest in unified sports grew.

“A lot of it was thanks to the First Lady’s initiative, Show Up,” she said. “More schools started to see what unified sports could be and wanted to be a part of it, so we saw a lot of growth. This was an incredible event.”

That event included eight of the nine high schools in Davis School District competing, as well as the Jordan Education Foundation pledging to support 10 new teams, including Herriman High. Wasatch High’s team will even represent Utah at the national Special Olympics games.

Since Worthen began overseeing unified sports four years ago, the competition has doubled from 22 to 50 teams involved in

“A coach told me that this whole week they have seen inclusion, that their students have made friends with unified partners and even students who weren’t participating.

They talk to each other and the students on the unified team feel like they’re a part of the school for the first time,” she said.

It’s not just high schools. Worthen said that by the end of the school year, unified sports activities will have quadrupled in the past year, bringing participation up to 160 elementary and secondary schools. In May, unified golf will be introduced at the middle school level.

Unified sports also gained the community’s support.

The basketball tournament, which was supported by the Utah Jazz, had four sections: two developmental and two competitive divisions. The winners of each division were recognized at the Utah Jazz game April 6, where a highlight reel of the tournament was shown.

However, the focus at the tournament was on basketball. Special needs players, or athletes, are joined on the court by two peer students, or partners. The rest of the team regularly rotates in and cheers for both teams on the sidelines. Several schools had banners and families and friends cheering.

Ames, who has coached girls basketball at both Riverton and Herriman high schools, coached unified sports for the first time.

“This was a brand-new opportunity and I fell in love with it. They’re just amazing kids and their peer tutors are amazing as well. It was really fun,” she said.

Her team — five athletes, along with three peer tutors — went through skills training where they dribbled through cones and shot baskets from different spots, which identified their ability as a developmental team.

“So that first day, I got an understanding of where the students’ abilities were and then we could get to work on the basics, shooting, passing, dribbling. The partners were great to work with them and help them,” Ames said.

“It was really fun to see their improvement during the six or seven practices we had.”

That led them to the regional tournament held in February at Riverton High.

Thanks to junior Charles Wilcken promoting the event, Herriman High students filled a section of the bleachers and lead in the cheering. Several Jordan Board of Education members and administrators joined families supporting the teams.

“A lot of kids at school wished us good luck at the game and you could see the kids always smiling because they’re so excited,” Wilcken said. “Every time I got an opportunity for them to score, I’d pass the ball to

them and get them to where they knew they could shoot.”

A highlight for Wilcken was in the last minute of their final region game.

“We had a player, and he hadn’t scored in the first two games and we’re really trying to get him to score and there was like a minute left in the last game we had. He shot it like four times…and he finally made it. He was jumping up and down and then the whole student section was going crazy.

It made me really happy, and gave me the chills to see how excited he got over this bas-

ket,” he said.

Ames agreed: “To me that was phenomenal, to see our school unified and get behind us – that studentbody was cheering, just like any other basketball game, and treated those kids just the same. We’d hit a three and they all just went crazy. That was so fun to be a part of, to see them come out and support the team and rally around them.”

The team beat Riverton’s competitive and developmental teams and lost to Bingham High for a second-place finish.

Investments of $30 million-plus tackle affordable housing, jobs and water conservation

I

n a response to the state’s housing crisis, the Salt Lake County Council recently approved $20 million in funds to build and preserve nearly 1,200 affordable housing units. The housing will be near childcare resources and jobs, with access to broadband, transportation and schools.

“More affordable housing is desperately needed,” Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said. “There are way too many hard-working households that are left behind because of skyrocketing home prices, rising rents, and fewer options to choose from. Salt Lake County is listening to residents and responding with significant funding to build and preserve housing.”

Funding for the project comes from the American Rescue Plan Act with an additional $12.1 million earmarked for water conservation and workforce development.

With the steady increase of rental and home ownership costs, and stagnant wages, the council approved the ARPA funds in the form of grants to community housing organizations, nonprofit housing providers, municipalities, and private developers.

In 2021, rental costs increased by 12% and homeownership costs increased by 28% or more in the county.

In March 2022, the median price for a Salt Lake County single-family home sold for $580,000.

“Housing is one of the things that keep us up at night,” said Dina Blaes, director of Salt Lake County’s Office of Regional Development. “But, fortunately, the county has a lot of expertise in affordable housing. So, we’re going to leverage our expertise with this new funding to enable thousands of families to remain living and working in Salt Lake County.”

Workforce development will receive a $10 million boost for the new Workforce Inclusion and Successful Employment program. Through grants, WISE will help nearly 2,000 students complete trainings that lead to higher-paying jobs. Students will also be connected with childcare, mental health and mentorship services.

“I think this is an awesome opportunity for Salt Lake County residents who might be working two or three jobs.

School District Superintendent Anthony Godfrey, Herriman lost to Brighton High in the opening round, then went on to beat Jordan and Orem in the consolation rounds.

Their team captain would rebound it and just give it to our players and let them shoot,” Ames said. “It’s pure joy, just that excitement when those kids make a basket and then look into the stands, look at their parents, everyone is cheering. They are excited to be there; they want to win just as much as everybody else.

It’s just fun to see them be successful and get better.”

Wilcken said that he plans to join Herriman’s Make a Difference inclusion club.

Aside from competition, for them to just fit in and be able to do these things that allow them to feel successful is huge.”

But it was more than that.

“We have students that participate in our unified sports and say it was just so much fun. Once they do, they’re more likely to say hello to students in the hallways, go out of their way to make them feel they are a part of the school and that they have friends here and often get involved in our program so they can continue to support the peers,”

In fact, several sports teams, cheerleaders, drill team and dance company, along with Inclusion Cheer, came to support the teams at region. Riverton’s competitive team took first at region and its player development team took third. Both teams took seventh at state.

“The more we compete, the more unified partners we get involved and more people see what it is and realize a little bit more that my students can do this and they’re capable and just like everyone else,” Brown said. “ They have a few more difficulties, but they want the same things – to play on sports teams, to be included and participate on the same level. We’re not going to halfway play.

We’re out there playing full as a team; we’re doing our best, we’re having fun. Unified sports are creating positive experiences for everyone.” l

Dominic Burchett sworn in as Unified Fire Authority’s 14th fire chief

W

hen Dominic Burchett was sworn in as Unified Fire Authority’s 14th fire chief in the agency’s 100-year history, he took over the reins for Utah's largest fire agency, serving 15 communities from Emigration Canyon to Eagle Mountain.

His appointment follows the retirement of Dan Petersen, who served as fire chief since 2017, a man Burchett has worked with and respects.

“Chief Petersen taught me the value of collaboration,” Burchett said. “He helped me understand the value of working with partners and stakeholders, searching to find the best answers for the community.”

Burchett, a Utah native, has extensive fire experience that stems from more than 20 years serving Salt Lake County, most recently as assistant chief of support services.

He was responsible for the daily operations of fire prevention, IT, logistics, and special enforcement. He also led the seismic retrofitting of all UFA stations and helped with several station rebuilding projects.

His fire career began in 1997 when his brother, Matthew Burchett, took a seasonal wildland job with Salt Lake County.

“He came home dirty and stinky, and I was in,” Burchett said. “I was able to be outside and work with people I really respected.

I was with my brother and other people who were working hard. I followed wherever he would take me.”

When Matthew died in August 2018, working on a fire line of the Mendocino Complex Fire in California, Burchett lost his brother and best friend.

“We grew up incredibly close,” Burchett said. “The healing process for me was a lot of therapy and people helping me through it. I think because of him I was able to step outside my comfort zone. He’s there kind of guiding me down certain roads and I feel his presence in different situations.”

Over the years, Burchett has taken opportunities for growth that helped him step up the chain of leadership. He moved through the ranks as a firefighter, wildland specialist, paramedic, captain, and division chief.

As the new fire chief, Burchett has three main areas of focus; the health and well-being of fire personnel, understanding the communities served by UFA, and continuous improvement for himself and the agency.

He said, historically, fire departments have acted in a reactionary way to issues such as suicide, PTSD, and burnout, dealing with problems as they come up. He created a video that detailed his own struggles in the

“I want to look at these things more holistically and focus on prevention,” he said. “There’s a lot of responsibility on my shoulders and I want to do what’s best for my people. My focus is really providing the best service for the community and being the best fire chief.”

Over the last five years, Burchett said UFA has come a long way under the previous fire chief. Building on Petersen’s foundation, he doesn’t need to do a big overhaul of the department, just implement small changes to keep moving the organization forward.

Continued from front page Twenty years later, Densley finally made it into “School of Rock.” As he sang the lyrics of the opening song, “The dreams that I had since the day I turned 10 will be finally coming true,” he realized that his dream, which began with his first audition at age 10, had come true.

Densley’s mom passed away in 2020, and though she will not see him in the show, he said she has affected his experience in the show.

“The show has been surprisingly emotional and moving,” he said. “I’m playing this crazy wild man, making people laugh, but there’s just poignant moments in the story that are so touching and moving and meaningful to me.”

He said Dewey is an inspiring character.

“He loves rock and roll so much that he unintentionally makes bad choices, but also, very unintentionally, moves people,” he said. “He helps the kids when nobody listens to them.”

In his role as Dewey, Densley believes in his students.

In real life, Densley is a huge support to his students.

“He is a very fun teacher who really cares about his students,” said Olsen, a percussionist in the MRHS band.

“His classes are my favorite part of the day in school. He’s just a great person to be around and an excellent mentor.”

Densley has been a teacher for six years, the last three spent building a successful band program at Mountain Ridge High School. The marching band won the state championship last fall and was a finalist in the Bands of America Western States Regional Championship. The jazz and concert bands earned superior ratings at this year’s Festival. With Densley on drums, the band played in the pit orchestra for the school play in March. In April,

the indoor percussion band took second place at the state competition.

Densley is not the only real-life teacher on the stage for this production. Riverton High School’s drama teacher Clin Eaton is in the ensemble of this, his seventeenth HCT production, playing the role of a teacher and of a parent in the Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday cast. Eaton has 22 years of experience as a teacher in real life and is also a father.

While he plays a father who doesn’t understand his son’s passion for music, Eaton said he is the opposite kind of parent in real life.

“I forced my children to do music,” he said. “Both of my daughters started piano at age four, and they both do singing, dancing and acting. They don’t have a choice when their dad’s a high school drama teacher.”

Eaton is impressed with both Densley and Bryan Hague, who plays Dewey in the Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday cast, the guitarist in the Monday/Wednesday/Friday cast, and is the instrumental director for the show.

“They’re both really, really funny and they’re great with the kids,” Eaton said.

Additionally, Mountain Ridge High School’s choir teacher, Kelly DeHaan, is the Music Director for HCT’s “School of Rock,” which runs from April 4-May 28.

You can see Densley rocking as Dewey Finn Monday/Wednesday/Friday and as the drummer Tuesday/ Thursday/Saturday—that is, except for the final few days of the run. Densley is taking the MRHS bands on tour to Southern California at the end of May. l

RISE hype: Getting students excited for end-of-year testing

osmo and the BYU cheerleaders and dunk team visited local charter school Summit Academy Bluffdale to get elementary students excited about RISE testing.

The Readiness Improvement Success Empowerment assessment is a computer adaptive criterion referenced assessment system, required by federal law for students in grades three through eight. Testing measures students’ proficiency and growth in language arts, mathematics, science and writing.

“RISE is the high stakes test that everyone stresses over and worries about,” Principal Diana Brantley said. But at Summit Academy Bluffdale, they don’t stress about it, they celebrate it.

In addition to the kick-off assembly with Cosmo, students created a music video called “Rock This Test” to an energizing popular song “Light it Up” by Fallout Boy, to be played each day before testing.

Younger students hung posters in the hallways with encouraging messages of "You’ve got this!” and “We are proud of you!” for the older students who would be taking the test.

Brantley hopes that when it's their turn to take the RISE test, those younger students will remember the positive messages that they helped reinforce.

“We just try to get the whole school involved in being proud of the job well done and not worrying about the final outcome,” Brantley said. “We're going to care about learning all year long, and then we're going to take an opportunity to show what we know.”

‘Show what you know’ is the phrase the staff uses when talking about RISE testing. They encourage students to just do their best.

“That's our attitude that we take,” Brantley said. “Because we're trying to teach children, not stress them out.”

All the positive hype is to help students have a growth mindset and positive attitude about the test.

“A lot of it is the emotional support they need to take such a heavy test,” Brantley said. “It's more of a mental health focus, but I do believe it does actually help give a truer score.”

She said when a child approaches the test with a can-do attitude of doing their best and to show what they know, there’s no need for them to panic.

In the classrooms, teachers prepare their students mentally for the test.

“We do a lot of practice tests to show them that it is not as hard as they hype it up to be,” fourth-grade teacher Mariah Curtis said. “We also talk about test-taking strategies and how to calm themselves to prevent the anxiety.”

The RISE testing window is from March to May. Teachers at Summit Academy Bluffdale chose to break up the testing into 45-60 minutes chunks, spread out over five weeks, limiting disruption to lessons and preventing what Brantley calls “brain drain.”

COVID-19 has disrupted RISE testing statewide the past two years. Testing was canceled in 2020 when schools went virtual and participation was down in 2021. USBE Associate Superintendent of Public Instruction Darin Nielsen said that overall student performance on RISE testing was notably lower in 2021 compared to 2019.

Testing scores don’t affect students’ grades but schools receive a report card based on their students’ performance. These accountability ratings were not calculated for 2021 because of the missing 2020 data.

Kim Rathke, test administration and data coordinator for the Utah State Board of Education, said the results can be a tool for teachers to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses in their instruction and in their students’ proficiency so they can prepare to best meet the needs of their students the following school year.

RISE scores show a proficiency level score, on a scale of

1-4, which represents a student’s progress toward individual growth targets. It indicates their rate of growth within a three year timeframe and their progress toward achieving or maintaining grade level proficiency. Because of the missing data from 2020, student growth percentiles were not calculated for 2021 RISE scores.

RISE scores also show how a student performed compared to their peer group within the school, district and state. Lower participation rates from last year could affect this year’s student percentile rankings, with fewer peers to make comparisons with.

Schools look for growth in the percentage of students that perform at or above grade level on RISE testing as a measure of how well their students are learning. Summit Academy in Bluffdale saw an increase—11% in language arts and 14% in math—in the percentage of students at or above grade level proficiency between 2019 and 2021.

2021 is the year that they started their campaign to hype the kids up for the RISE testing.

“You could not say that the assembly pulled off that kind of growth,” Brantley admits. “But the assembly itself supports their enthusiasm and their confidence.”

She said the kick-off assembly and positive hype is just one piece that affects students’ readiness to perform well on the test.

“The right instruction, the right teachers, the right curriculum, that is a part of it, but none of that affects the state of mind that they take that test with,” she said. “Some of them are feeling stress over it and some of them are just completely unengaged.

And so getting them to engage in it, getting them to be excited about it, getting them to know that their best is phenomenal and that we're going to celebrate, that is a piece of it, too. And so the assembly takes care of that piece, and my brilliant teachers and their talented teaching take care of the other piece.” l

The Children’s Center of Utah recognizes Children’s Mental Health Awareness Month

ach year on May 7, Children's Mental Health Awareness Day brings recognition to the value of a child’s mental health.

But The Children's Center of Utah will highlight the importance of children’s mental health all month long.

“Our organization is inviting the whole community to become involved,” said Rebecca Dutson, The Children's Center of Utah president and CEO. “On our website, people can find a whole lot of ideas they can be engaged in or their business can be engaged with. The more we talk about it, the less there will be a stigma.”

The Center is asking businesses to give a portion of proceeds to The Children's Center of Utah during May and invites everyone to promote its mission on social media platforms.

Yard signs are available to put outside a home or business, promoting awareness for children’s mental health. Anyone interested can contact Joni Clark at jclark@tccutah.org to reserve a sign. Or visit childrenscenterutah.org/awareness for more ideas on how to become an ambassador for mental health and raise money for the cause.

“The best thing we can all do is start talking more openly about not just our own mental health but mental health in the family,” Dutson said. “There is so much support.

One of the promises we make to our community is that we do not turn anyone away for inability to pay.”

Supporters are also invited to attend The Children's Center of Utah’s SHINE Gala on Friday, June 3, at the Gallivan Center Plaza.

The gala will be in-person, the first time in two years, and there is lots of interest from long-term supporters.

The SHINE Gala, which started more than 20 years ago, features a social hour, silent and live auctions, entertainment and a buffet dinner. In the past, the event has raised more than $500,000 to help pay for children’s mental health services. Registration is available on The Children's Center of Utah website.

“We’re shining a light on the importance of early childhood mental health and comprehensive mental health care for children,” Dutson said. “Every child and every child’s needs are unique. We encourage families who have concerns about their child to reach out and start a conversation.”

COVID shone a light on mental health issues. Children were heavily impacted by their parents’ stress, the change of schedules and isolation from friends and family during the pandemic. “[The pandemic] allowed for more conversations about mental health. We just want to continue to build on that,” Dutson said.

“The relationships that children have with their caregivers and parents are so important. It’s usually those adults that realize there might be a concern. When we talk about mental health it can change the trajectory of a child’s life.”

The Children's Center of Utah works with children from infants through 6 years of age. Its mission is to bring a heightened awareness to the issue of children’s mental health. For more than 50 years, the organization has used evidence-based treatments, helping more than 1,800 children each year to increase resilience and develop healthy emotional well-being.l

Why Water Conservation Matters

By Mayor Trent Staggs Drought conditions in Utah continue.

As a result, snowpack for areas that feed Riverton City’s water systems is at 79% of normal. Utah Lake, the reservoir that holds the city’s secondary irrigation water, sits at 61.3% of capacity, compared to 78% last year. Together, these facts paint a somewhat bleak outlook for where we sit heading into the summer season.

Given this outlook, I recommend all Riverton residents start the summer season out with water conservation in mind and look for ways throughout this year to reduce water use. These may include: • Wait to start watering lawns until the soil needs it. This will allow more water to be retained in Utah Lake for use later in the season. An easy way to determine if soil is moist or needs water is to stick a screwdriver in the ground. If it goes in easy, the soil is moist and doesn’t need water. If it is difficult to insert, it’s likely the

grass needs water.

• Once temperatures warm and lawn watering becomes necessary, following the Weekly Lawn Watering Guide published by the Utah Division of Water Resources will ensue you are only using as much water as is necessary given outdoor temperatures.

• Adjust automatic sprinkler timers, especially in the spring and fall, to reduce the time they are on, as lawn needs much less water during those cooler months. Setting your clock at the beginning of the season and not adjusting • Consider installing a smart irrigation controller on your sprinkler system. Doing so may qualify you for a rebate.

• Consider removing the grass in your park strip and installing landscaping that uses less water and is easier to maintain. You may qualify for the Flip Your Strip rebate from the state if you do so.

The Utah State Legislature passed H.B. 242 this year which mandates that every secondary water meter connection in Utah be metered by 2030. As part of the bill, water suppliers that install meters in 2022 and 2023 are eligible to receive

state funding for 70% of the cost of the project. Riverton City plans to take advantage of this funding and will cover the remaining 30% by using funds provided to the city by the 2021 America Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Riverton City has already installed meters on over 1/3 of secondary water connections, essentially all connections west of the Utah Lake Distributing Canal. Anticipating state action on metering, Riverton City suspended the installation of meters at the end of 2020, saving the city $8 million in bond money we returned to the lender. As a result of H.B. 242, and funding from ARPA, Riverton City will be able to install meters on remaining connections at no cost to the taxpayer and without incurring any debt. Residents who do not yet have a meter can expect to have one installed in the next year or two.

The city does not intend to change our charging structure for use of secondary water after meters are installed, but we hope residents will become aware of how much water they are using. Data has shown when the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District installed meters, and showed users how much water they were using, water usage dropped by 20-30% over time.

By Councilmember Claude Wells Have you ever been to a Riverton City Council meeting? Chances are if you have, you likely only understand a little bit about the process of how the meeting is conducted. Riverton City operates using a “six-member council” form of government consisting of the Mayor as the chair and five council members for five distinct districts throughout our 12 square mile city boundary.

Our job is to be a good steward of the residents/taxpayer’s money used to keep our city running and maintain our city infrastructure in a safe manner. The City Council approves ordinances, reviews zoning change requests, reviews and set budgets that are fiscally responsible, adopts resolutions, establishes city fees, sets strategic priorities for each budget year and establishes long-range plans for city services, utilities, and set regulatory

standards for the provision of city services.

Each hearing, ordinance, budget item, and other important motions made by the City Council take a majority vote of the council to pass into law. The City Council has five votes.

A voting majority is three votes since the Mayor only votes to break a tie.

It is in the best interest of council members to establish productive relationships with city staff and other council members to get support on important city initiatives. No single council member can decide any one issue on their own.

It is important for cities to have engaged citizens in the important matters that shape our city’s goals.

On March 1, 2022, the City Council had two important issues to resolve in two different areas of our city. We had a full capacity council chamber present for both hearings. Having actively engaged citizens show up in full force made all the difference in the decisions made that night.

We were able to make decisions that required some concessions to be negotiated. Most of the citizens

Close Before You Doze

By Chief Wade Watkins Han Solo’s famous quote of “never tell me the odds” was epic in Star Wars. In real life, stacking the deck to improve those odds is key to protect our families and our community. Reducing and mitigating the risk and the impact of fires in our homes is the focus of this article.

Through prevention and early notification efforts we improve the odds.

Another important safety measure is to Close Before You Doze. Through comprehensive experiments performed by the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), we now understand that it is extremely important for the survivability of occupants to close the bedroom door.

• More survivable temperatures: temperatures typically will stay below 100 degrees Fahrenheit • Livable oxygen levels: oxygen levels read around 18%. (For comparison, regular room air is about 20% oxygen.)

• Less toxic carbon monoxide levels: close to 100 parts per million of carbon monoxide When a door remains open during a fire, a person in that room is exposed to: • Less survivable temperatures:

Using thermal imaging cameras, researchers found that closed-door rooms on both floors during the fire’s spread had average temperatures of less than 100 degrees Fahrenheit versus 1000+ degrees in the open-door rooms. “You could see a markable difference that a person could be alive in a room with a closed door much longer,” according to a FSRI researcher.

Saving lives starts with simple steps. Based on these findings, Close Before You Doze encourages those both trapped in a room during a fire, as well as those who can safely leave a home, to close as many doors as possible. These steps should only be performed if it can be done safely.

Mayor Staggs honored by U.S. Global Leadership Coalition

“U

nited States leadership in the world cannot be understated,” Mayor Trent Staggs said to open his acceptance speech last month.

Staggs was honored by the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition for his work to advocate for U.S. global leadership. So, what is the USGLC? What does the USGLC do? How does a local mayor work to advocate for U.S. global leadership?

According to Coby Jones from the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, the USGLC is a 501c3 comprised of an advocacy organization as well as a 501c4 education organization.

Jones continued, saying the USGLC “represents a broad-based influential network of 500 businesses and NGOs; national security and foreign policy experts; and business, faithbased, academic, military, and community leaders in all 50 states...”

The USGLC is a massive organization with a Utah advisory committee comprised of 97 members as well as two committee cochairs. Members are made up of state and local government officials, local business owners and attorneys. Some notable members include Attorney General Sean Reyes, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson and former Congressman Ben McAdams.

The USGLC is a nonpartisan organization

that focuses its advocacy efforts on “helping to build a bipartisan consensus in Congress…on why U.S. leadership in the world matters…”

Jones told the City Journals.

Staggs “demonstrated commitment that leading globally matters locally and championing global issues in order to bring prosperity to Riverton,” Jones said. More specifically, Jones sited Staggs’ mayoral declaration of Dec. 14, 2021 as Global Engagement Day. Furthermore, Jones stated Staggs’ priorities of “making Riverton a global hub for medicine and healthcare, finance and technology” also earned him the award.

“When there is instability in the world, like we are seeing with Russia’s war on Ukraine, we feel the impacts at the local level with rising gas prices, ongoing inflation and continued supply chain issues,” Staggs said at Riverton’s Old Dome Meeting Hall. He continued, saying “I encourage every local and state leader here today to consider what you can do in your own spheres of influence...”

With recent conflicts like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the global leadership lobbying campaign has skyrocketed in support. Awards like the one given to Staggs have become increasingly common. “USGLC has honored nearly 100 mayors across the United States for their leadership in addressing global issues that

are now kitchen table issues,” Jones said.

“I think some of it has to do with some of the positions I’ve taken in politics…but I’ve also worked with World Trade Center Utah and helped with one of [their] committees,” Staggs told the City Journals before stepping on stage to accept his award.

is not the only way Staggs has demonstrated global leadership. Staggs has also done international serving work as a member of the board of directors of Vivakor, a public clean tech remediation company that had its IPO mid-February.

Vivakor has worked on projects both locally and in the middle east. l

Councilmember Troy McDougal reflects on first two years in office

“I

’m just an old farm boy from West Jordan,” Councilmember Troy McDougal told the City Journals. From visiting his grandfather’s farm as a kid, McDougal was guided back to Riverton, wanting the same rural lifestyle he remembers from his childhood.

Before running for office, the councilmember worked as a real estate broker, investment broker, entrepreneur, coach and religious educator for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He even ran Chillz Frozen Yogurt, a local business in Riverton.

Now, McDougal holds a seat on the Riverton City Council. Representing District 2, McDougal’s first term on the council has not been a breeze.

McDougal’s journey began with a slim victory for the seat over Tracie Halvorsen by a margin of only 110 votes. Since his election in 2019, McDougal has served on a number of committees and advocated for a number of initiatives and issues.

As for priorities, McDougal has two main focus areas. “Number one, growth… number two, financial,” McDougal said, continuing, “My role is to represent the masses.”

Riverton has increased in population significantly in the past 10 years. With the Salt Lake Valley expanding year after year, River-

ton has been no stranger to outside influences and invading real estate differences. Rezone applications have become a common occurrence for the council. “Growth is happening all around us…” McDougal says.

Maintaining Riverton’s semi-rural feel has been a large priority for McDougal.

“We respect the existing zoning,” McDougal added. Understanding the importance of commercial businesses in Riverton’s fiscal well-being, he added, “Commercial in commercial areas, residential in residential areas.”

As for the councilman’s second priority, the city’s financial stability has been superior to that of neighboring cities throughout the pandemic. New infrastructure projects like introducing broadband internet into the city is a prime example, with much of the debt avoided through private investment and federal grants.

“If we can [eliminate] our debt while building our tax base, then we don’t get in a situation where we have to rely on raising taxes on people,” McDougal said. “By being frugal with what we spend, we don’t get into a situation where we’re increasing debt.”

During McDougal’s term, a great help has been the unity of the Riverton City Council. According to McDougal, the council shares a similar vision for the city. “We may

have some different ideas on how to bring that about…but all of us have been united in that vision.” Some differences have occurred on issues like zoning and timing for certain projects, but ultimately the council’s shared vision has kept them moving forward in working to provide the best service possible to Riverton residents.

As for the councilman’s future in politics, he says “I don’t have great political as-

pirations to go beyond.” McDougal added “I love where I live. My goal of serving was to preserve that,” which proves his belief in his motto “love where you live!”

Math games multiply math gains

P

ositive COVID-19 cases have had a negative effect on math skills. The online lessons of 2020 that prevented hands-on and interactive activities, and the frequent shut-downs and absences that interrupted lessons in 2021, were especially disruptive to the students trying to master basic math facts.

Typically, third graders memorize multiplication tables the last few months of the school year. A large portion of third graders in 2020 missed out on that skills practice.

“We're seeing the side effects of that this year, more than I've ever seen it,” said fifth grade math specialist Amy Barlow, whose students are still struggling with multiplication tables two years later.

Barlow teaches at charter school Summit Academy Bluffdale, where they provide daily math interventions. But SAB teachers believe students need math support at home, as well.

SAB Principal Diana Brantley said that while parents know the importance of reading to their children and encouraging their literacy skills development, many don’t know the importance of incorporating math learning into their children’s lives.

Melanie Otvos had a negative math experience as a child and struggled to help her kids with their math homework. When she began working as an intervention coach at SAB, she realized how important early exposure to math is for kids.

She began talking about math at home, especially with her preschooler. For example, she asked her how to evenly share six cookies among three people.

“The way that I'm parenting my 4-year-old is vastly different,” she said.

“I look for everyday opportunities where I can use math in what we're doing.”

To help parents support their children’s math skills development, SAB hosted a Math Night at the end of March.

Families learned to play 20 different math games provided by Mathnasium. All the games use simple materials—dice, post-it notes, candies, sticks, dominoes—and can be adjusted to any age or skill level.

“The families will take home all of the games and that will give them the opportunity to replicate that at home and do a little more playing around and having fun with math,” Brantley said.

Sarah Croff, a parent volunteer, helped teach families to play one of the games at Math Night. She said it was fun to see kids get excited about math.

“They find the fun in it and they often don’t realize they are doing math,” she said.

SAB fourth grade teacher Mariah Curtis encourages her students to involve their parents in their math homework by having them show their parents how they solved the problem.

She said the games provided at Math Night will also “invite the conversations that create learning.”

Math was the focus throughout the month of March at SAB. Third, fourth, fifth and sixth graders competed in a Math Bowl competition.

It was an opportunity for students to showcase their math skills. The competition was also a great motivator.

“For a lot of students, it gives them the drive they lack in day to day class,” Curtis said.

The sixth graders also celebrated Pi Day (3.14) on March 14.

“Math doesn't get a lot of positive publicity, so I have to use every chance I can get to show why math is great,” sixth grade teacher Jennifer Johnson said.

Although pi is actually a seventh grade standard, Johnson introduced it to her students to get them comfortable with seeing symbols and complex decimals.

Students watched an entertaining cartoon explaining how pi is calculated and then practiced using it in a fun activity. But the highlight of the lesson was when the students got to eat pie. Parents donated over 40 pies for the 53 sixth-graders and their teachers. l

ne in three women will experience domestic violence in the state of Utah.

Statistics also demonstrate that one in six women and one in 25 men experience rape or attempted rape, and one in three women will experience some form of sexual violence.

With such concerning numbers, Intermountain Healthcare is donating $540,000 and partnering with the nonprofit Utah Domestic Violence Coalition to assist Utahns who need help in recovering from the impacts of abuse.

“Access to resources is an essential part of the healing process,” said Mikelle Moore, senior vice president and chief community health officer at Intermountain. “The members of the UDVC work together to support domestic violence survivors in a way that makes access easier and the use of funds more efficient. Intermountain is proud to support their efforts ensuring services are available where and when survivors need it.”

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, sexual and domestic violence cases have risen 8.1% in Utah. The UDVC provides advocacy and education to member programs and community partners. Its membership includes nonprofit domestic violence shelters and sexual assault advocacy organizations.

Riverton boys soccer in close race for top spot in region

F

ollowing the Riverton girls soccer team’s impressive run to a state championship in the fall, the boys team is trying to make some noise as well in Region 3.

The Silverwolves have only one region loss this season (as of the Riverton Journal’s press deadline), a close 2-1 loss on the road against Bingham. Following the loss, however, the team showed great resilience in winning back-to-back games that went into

extra time. Against Herriman, the Silverwolves were able to score a clutch winning goal in extra time. Two days later against Mountain Ridge, they failed to get a winning goal during extra time, but gutted out a 5-4 win through penalty shootout.

Riverton will have a chance for revenge against Bingham when the Miners come to visit on May 4. l

Mountain Ridge soccer fighting to stay in Region 3 race

oming off the heels of a region championship in 2021, the Mountain Ridge boys soccer team is trying to keep pace with the other top Region 3 teams for another trophy.

The Sentinels defeated West Jordan, Herriman and Copper Hills in their first matchup, but fell twice to Riverton, the second loss coming in a shootout. Those two defeats placed Mountain Ridge two games behind first-place Bingham in the loss column. But with two of the Sentinels’ final three games of the season coming against Bingham, they’ll have a chance to make up some ground. Those matches are scheduled for May 2 (at home) and May 6 (at Bingham). l

Boys approved for sanctioning in 2023-24

epresentatives of the Utah Boys Volleyball Association had sat in meetings with the Utah High School Activities Association before—over the past four years in a formal fashion. So, when the UHSAA board again put the sanctioning of boys volleyball to a vote, the UBVA members braced themselves. They had been here before, and had walked out disappointed every time. Yet, on this day, March 24, 2022, it would finally be the outcome they had wanted when their organization was formed in 2015.

After decades of boys playing the sport in Utah, boys volleyball is official, and with a 10-4 vote, will now be a UHSAA-sanctioned sport beginning in the 2023-24 school year, joining the ranks with 25 other states nationwide.

“We had a lot more hope and momentum this time, but it was so surreal to sit there and hear it announced. We were just in shock,” said UBVA co-founder Jill Davis.

This latest attempt at sanctioning laid 10,000 signatures in front of the UHSAA board along with written support from local politicians, including Norm Thurston of the Utah House of Representatives, who was in attendance at the meeting, to BYU athletic director, Tom Holmoe, BYU men’s volleyball coach Shawn Olmstead and USA national men’s volleyball coach John Speraw.

UHSAA assistant director Jan Whittaker said, “The UHSAA is excited to be sanctioning boys’ volleyball for the 2023-24 schools year. This will allow many boys who have not been competing in a sport for their school the opportunity to be part of the high school sports experience.

They will be able to benefit from the positive impact that high school athletics has on students.”

Davis said, “It’s a wonderful sense of accomplishment and it was an honor to be in the seat. A lot of people told us it wouldn’t happen, but our grassroots efforts and the community support made this happen. This is a victory for everybody, especially the boys and their families.”

Davis has helped spearhead the UBVA’s effort the past few years to get the sport sanctioned. Her sons, Parker and Price, were part of a Bingham High boys volleyball program who three-peated in state titles from 2017 to 2019.

She, UBVA co-founder Warren Van Schalkwyk and Duke Mossman, who coaches at Wasatch High, formed a collaborative effort of continually gathering statistics and surveying coaches statewide to keep up with the growing interest and participation in the sport.

What they found was: • Boys volleyball is one of the fastest growing sport in high schools across the nation.

• Boys volleyball is one of the largest club sports in Utah. In 2015, the state had 24 club teams; last fall, that number was up to 56.

• In 2019, 81 high school teams represented 56 schools in Utah. This year, 122 high school teams are playing from 64 schools with more than 1,500 boys competing.

• More than half of those 64 high school teams had such a demand in numbers that coaches had to cut players at tryouts due to popularity of the sport and lack of facilities.

• Most of the 5A and 6A schools have full teams with the 3A and 4A classifications having a more mixed representation and the more rural schools in 1A and 2A coming in with the lowest participation rates.

• 53% of the boys volleyball programs pay for gym rentals from their schools in order to play and practice.

• 90% of participants statewide just play boys volleyball and are not multi-sport athletes.

Corner Canyon High boys volleyball director Dan Penrod said. “Over this long process, there have always been a few parents that wanted to get the sanctioning ball rolling, but when their boys were finished playing, the momentum died down. Jill staying on after her boys graduated was everything in making sure this happened.”

Whittaker noted how the Emerging Sports Program that the UHSAA formed three years ago played a key role in the sanctioning of boys volleyball. “That program was created to grow meaningful participation opportunities for student-athletes, particularly for female student-athletes, in sports and activities,” she said. “A sport can be considered for sanctioning after it meets a certain threshold of participating of our students in member schools. Boys participating in volleyball has steadily grown over the past few years.”

Whittaker said once boys volleyball had met initial criteria for sanctioning consideration the UHSAA Board of Trustees looked at several factors in the ultimate decision-making process including: • The impact on Title IX compliance • The percentage of member schools that facilitate interscholastic competition in the emerging sport • Participation in community-sponsored leagues for the sport • Whether other state high school athletic associations sponsor or sanction competition in the sport • University, college and junior college opportunities for participation after high school • Whether the sport is a lifetime sport or activity, easily accessed in later life, that contributes to public health or fitness • Whether the NFHS or other recognized governing body publishes rules for interscholastic competition in the sport • Assistance available for growing the sport from national governing bodies, in-state coaches association and/or in-state officials associations • Significant obstacles to growing the sport, such as lack of facilities, expensive equipment, risk of injury, lack of experienced coaches and officials • The opportunity for student-athletes to participate equally from all socio-economic backgrounds • Whether sanctioning the sport will divert participants from and weaken an existing sanctioned or emerging sport • Whether there is significant competition for student-athletes to participate in this sport outside of school • The length of time the sport has been an emerging sport • The burden on member schools, districts and on the UHSAA of sanctioning the emerging sport • Utah Division of Risk Management concerns and input “This is not a check off list, but are items that were discussed prior to making the decision to sanction boys volleyball,” Whittaker said, adding that each school and district will “make the determination whether they will sponsor a sport that UHSAA sanctions.”

Davis said that the sanctioning of boys volleyball is a “win-win.” “This legitimizes it for the boys and creates stability and consistency across the board under a fabulous umbrella. Scholarships are secondary,” she said. “Plus, county rec leagues can still function for those who were cut from their high school teams as well as those who just want to play.”

teams, has been gearing up to step away from UBVA since 2020 when her son graduated but “needed to stay in the game” to see the sanctioning process through. “Personally, to be able to serve these boys has been a thrill, and it’s an even bigger thrill to betting Utah on the map with boys volleyball,” she said. “I’ll forever be a part of the sport, but this ‘cherry on the top’ is so exciting for these kids and a great way to go out for me.”

“Jill is an absolute angel for doing all of that. She did an amazing job, and it means so much to the boys,” said Olympus High boys volleyball club director Brett Peterson.

Peterson, who has been directing the Olympus boys volleyball program for several years—with Ben Chamberlain coaching the varsity squad—said he’s thrilled to have the boys experience sanctioned volleyball. Peterson’s own experience was competing for two years in sanctioned play in California, and then helping build a club team at Olympus High, where he was a player/coach over his final two seasons, while his mom, Chris, ran the program.

The UBVA will continue to host the state boys volleyball tournament for the next two seasons as budgets, schedules and regional alignments are put in place for the 2024 spring season when UHSAA will take the reins.

X marks the spot

H

e might not have a parrot or an eye patch, but my dad has found more buried treasure than any pirate. Inside his mild-mannered dad costume lurks the heart of Captain Jack Sparrow, ready to tackle any adventure with dashing flair and comic grace.

On a blustery day in April, he took a pickaxe and hammer to help his great-grandkids find fossilized shells and pieces of quartz on the side of a mountain near his home in central Utah. He was excited about every discovery, and everywhere he looked, he saw treasure.

He pointed to the west and said, “That mountain is full of blue agate.” He pointed down and leaned in to whisper, “We’re standing on the biggest gold mine in the state.” He pointed east to where dinosaur bones hide in the hills and pointed south to Native American sites where he’s examined petroglyphs and rock paintings.

I’ve explored with Dad many times, usually only finding spiders, cacti and the occasional rattlesnake. He can stick his hand in a hole in a rock and pull out gemstones, old coins and a jackalope skull.

Dad’s always had a sense of adventure. If he could make a living exploring

ghost towns and spelunking in caves for lost treasure, à la Indiana Jones, he’d be the happiest man on earth.

With his keen, scientific mind, he built model airplanes and assembled rockets that exploded in midair, not always on purpose. He’d ignite a mini cannon on the Fourth of July that freaked out the neighbors, cracked a basement window and set off car alarms. We’d run inside and hide like the Feds were after us. They probably were.

For him, life has been one big treasure hunt. He often takes his metal detector to parks and always shows up when a road is being dug or a house demolished.

You never know what he’ll find; sometimes a rare penny, sometimes radioactive marbles.

He once discovered a class ring and

used his Hercule Poirot-level detective skills to return it to the family of the man who’d lost it decades earlier.

Even with his work, he stood on the leading edge of discovery. In the ’60s, he helped build the first communications system for Air Force One. Later, he created cameras that flew on the space shuttle, were installed in telescopes and helped aerial refueling tankers.

A camera he designed took the first pictures of the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean.

Never one to pass up a good conspiracy theory, Dad talks about his close encounters with UFOs, ghosts, the Illuminati and home teachers. He also plays the accordion, although how can you tell if someone does that well?

He’s a master woodworker, making toys, banjos, ukuleles and violins that he donates to teens. He cuts and polishes the stones he finds to make necklaces, and he’s been known to set a trap or two for Santa Claus. He’d frighten us with scary stories before bedtime, stories he insisted were true, which made it worse.

If Dad had the chance to take a rocketship to the moon, he’d already be packed. He’d love to fly in a fighter jet

or visit the space station. He’d gladly sail the Seven Seas under the Jolly Roger and swashbuckle through hidden caves looking for gold doubloons and diamonds the size of cantaloupes.

But through all of his adventures, misadventures, escapades, quests, deeds and feats of reckless abandon, Dad knows the biggest treasure is the one in his own backyard.
