P

laying college football was always a goal Ryan Miller had for his son Justin Miller, but how much he played was cause for debate.

Early on, Ryan saw his son as someone who could maybe just make a collegiate team. As time wore on, Ryan’s perception changed to Justin not just making a team but making an impact.

Those dreams became reality this past spring when Justin, a Summit Academy graduate, led Southern Utah University as the Thunderbirds’ starting quarterback.

This accomplishment was the culmination of a journey that began long before Justin attended Summit Academy and included his father, Ryan, Summit Academy head coach, through much of it.

“It’s just a really, really cool experience when the things he worked for and wanted, in spite of the difficult and roundabout way that he got there, it’s really cool to watch it at least start to happen,” Ryan said.

Road to SUU Justin grew up in Irvine, California, where he played football until his sophomore season. The Millers then moved to Highland where Justin played a season at Lone Peak High School.

Justin then transferred to Summit Academy for his senior season in 2015, amassing 3,359 passing yards, 36 touchdowns and four interceptions. While there, Ryan was defensive coordinator.

The biggest takeaway, however, for Justin was learning leadership. He also had the opportunity to change plays at the line of scrimmage because the school’s offensive coordinator trusted his judgment.

“One of the biggest parts of that was I had to understand our offense and defenses even more so I could get us in the right positions,” Justin said. “So my time at Summit was great. I made a lot of good friends and learned a lot about football in general.”

After graduating, Justin attended Snow College for a season, leading the Badgers to a 7-3 record in 2016 while accumulating 2,124 passing yards with 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Justin competed for the starting role at Snow, learning a new pro-style offense in the process that had him under center a lot.

Rather than opting for another year at Snow, Justin served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Romania. While his mind was Continued page 5

South Valley Chamber wants COVID business recovery to be more inclusive

T

he South Valley Chamber and United Way of Salt Lake held a roundtable meeting March 26. The focus was recovering and rebuilding business in Salt Lake County in a deliberately inclusive way.

“We all know that 2020 was a rough year. But in the circles that I operate in, I know that 2020 wasn’t the start of some of our biggest challenges as far as equitable opportunities. United Way has focused for a long time on community problems, and these problems were magnified in 2020,” said Bill Crim, CEO of United Way of Salt Lake.

The South Valley Chamber supports business growth in Sandy, Draper and Riverton. They came together with United Way and Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson for the presentation “Opportunity for All: Building Equitable Communities.”

“We know that things like income, education and health coverage vary widely among different groups in society. It’s the happenstance of where we’re born and the parents we’re born to that determines our access,” Crim said.

try, where minorities are at a disadvantage.

“But there is good news about living in Utah. Utah is the No. 1 state in the country for volunteering and charitable giving. We’re a compassionate group of humans,” Crim said.

Crim turned the time over to Wilson, who said she feels like the pandemic response is giving the community a generational opportunity. “It’s such a transformative time,” Wilson said.

Wilson described her CODA team: the Council on Diversity Affairs. After the initial emergency pandemic response in Salt Lake in spring 2020, the CODA team was consulted to ensure the response had a connection to the community.

“There was so much going on. I felt vulnerable during the dark, early days when COVID started. I’d walk into our emergency command center where we always had CNN on, and I’d see the red bubbles of ‘infection’ spreading on the map,” Wilson said.

As Wilson looks to the future, CODA’s broad approach will make sure that diverse needs are considered in initiatives ranging

from aging services to infrastructure. “And everything we’ve done has been through partnerships with groups like United Way of Salt Lake,” Wilson said.

Wilson also recognized the mistake of not getting someone “at the table” sooner to consider how COVID might discriminate. “[No one was] looking at how people of color were not being tested at the same rate, or how they were impacted or dying at a higher rate. As a mayor I was trying to take a stand against discrimination, but I didn’t think to get someone there at the beginning.

I got someone there early [to look at those issues] once I realized,” Wilson said.

Wilson tried to create partnerships between her office and businesses and schools.

“We utilized low-cost loans for businesses. We’re seeing how we can help women-owned businesses. We pulled in students who weren’t able to travel for internships and gave them internships here.

“We also figured out that kids have been left behind and haven’t had access to technology or their teachers. The schools are overwhelmed. So we’re using our partner-

Notable attendees of the meeting included former Rep. Rebecca Chavez-Houck; Laura Stireman of Workers’ Compensation Fund; Sarah Wright, executive director of Utah Clean Energy; Rep. Jefferson Burton, Army Major General, retired; Olivia Scott of United Way; Scott Sperry, COO of O.C. Tanner Company; former Rep. Eric Hutchings; and Deputy Mayor of Salt Lake County Kerri Nakamura.

Rep. Burton brought together the pieces of finance and social inclusion when he asked how our local governments will utilize government stimulus money to improve infrastructure in neighborhoods that have been historically left behind.

“Our amount for Salt Lake County is $200 million. We’re waiting for clarification from the federal government on how the money can be spent. Digital access is something they approved, so that will be a priority,” Wilson said.

Wilson said that there was a multimillion-dollar budget loss last year and a hiring freeze, so that’s part of their consideration for the funds. But there isn’t as much of a rush on how to use the funds.

“The last stimulus fund (in 2020) we had to use within a year. We’re not as rushed with this stimulus because we have until 2024. So we’re looking long-term and short-term,” Wilson said.

Now that the dialogue is open among all the different groups in Salt Lake County, Crim hopes there will be action.

“Meetings are a path to action. If you want to fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,” Crim said. “It’s unknown what the effects of the pandemic crisis will be on youth, education, equity and helping refugees. But working with Salt Lake County on this has been inspiring.” l

From walkon to starter While not being a native Utahn, Ryan said he had never heard of SUU, a Division I FCS program, but visited the campus with Justin for a junior day. Ryan said they both fell in love with the school, but it didn’t show much interest following that visit.

While Justin was on his mission, Ryan started reaching out to myriad schools to help Justin find a landing spot. He started to get some interest but nothing solid.

Justin then returned to Snow and started playing spring football with the Badgers, but Ryan continued marketing his son to interested programs.

One day, Ryan said he was talking to a junior college coach friend from Arizona, who suggested SUU. Ryan expressed his love for SUU but said there wasn’t much of an interest from the school.

Ryan said his friend then reached out to SUU and reported back the coaches were willing to give Justin an opportunity to showcase his talents.

Justin said he knew he would have to prove himself to earn a spot but he still liked SUU. “It was just the right timing,” Justin said.

“Really, one of the only schools, I felt, believed in me and was going to give me a real opportunity to play, so I was really excited to make that decision.”

Another important aspect for Justin was he

wanted to go somewhere he could improve the program rather than be plugged in to a successful program.

SUU head coach Demario Warren said he always thought Justin had potential, but he wanted to see him develop before offering him a scholarship. Warren said he was impressed with how well Justin learned the concepts and applied them on the field, eventually leading to a scholarship in 2019.

“We hired a new [offensive coordinator], and he just took it to a whole other level,” Warren said. “I think this offense really fits what he does best, which is being a cerebral player that is able to dissect exactly what we’re trying to look at and what we’re trying to find and get the ball to the place that we want to at the right time.”

Before Justin had a chance to prove himself, COVID-19 started tightening its grip on the world, eventually leading to abbreviated 2020 spring practices and a postponed fall season.

During that time, Justin said he continued to train with fellow players, ensuring he would be ready when games resumed.

When the T-Birds returned, Justin became the starting quarterback. SUU finished the spring season with a 1-5 season, but four of those losses were by three or fewer points.

Justin finished with 1,713 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions, but for him, the biggest takeaways were the relationships he built.

“I really enjoyed the team atmosphere this year,” he said. “I think we’re a lot stronger, and we’re a lot closer knit. We’re really tight as a group, and so I think that has definitely changed

from the past seasons.”

Lessons learned While Justin’s journey has helped him realize some football goals, that’s not what stands out to him the most.

“I mean, I love football, and I love everything about it,” he said. “But I think one of the most prized things I’ve come away with is the friendships and new relationships with teammates and with coaches that will last longer than the game will.”

As for his abilities, Justin said playing at this level is much faster than he’s experienced.

The adjustment was easier because he played at Snow College after high school.

As for how he works with the rest of the team, Warren said Justin excels in leading. He’s noticed Justin give speeches to help motivate his teammates and they respond well.

“Guys just respect him because they know it’s not coming from a person that’s not going to ask for something he’s not willing to do,” Warren said. “Again, he leads by example, but he can also step up and say the uncomfortable things that really galvanize his teammates, and I’m really excited about him being our leader and our captain.”

Ryan described his son as level-headed and not much of a rah-rah personality. Still, when visiting him during a practice, Ryan remembers many teammates treating Justin as a respected leader, though he was a redshirt sophomore.

“I think that’s really what Justin’s all about,” he said. “The combination of level-headed and people respect him for what he’s all about, how he plays, how he works, the

whole nine yards.”

To the future Whenever Justin had a game at SUU this spring, Ryan would find himself awake early in the morning. These early risings came because of nervousness and excitement for his son.

Throughout Justin’s life, Ryan was there to help him prepare the game or to offer coaching advice. Now, Justin is in a new place in his career, a place that took him on many twists and turns.

But that journey doesn’t only benefit Justin, it brings benefits to Summit Academy. Justin serves as an inspiration to those who may be considering playing after high school.

Ryan said it provides his players a blueprint to find success on their collegiate aspirations.

“Just because we’re a [3A] school doesn’t mean that you’re limited,” Ryan said. “You can achieve the goals you have set for yourself even though you’re not coming from a Riverton or a Herriman or one of the big 6A programs in the area.”

As for Justin, the T-Birds will return to action this fall for what he hopes will be a regular season that features improvements for his team.

Along for the ride will be Justin’s father, who’s seen it all happen alongside his son.

“The end of this story might suck, and he could be hurt, he could be benched, a lot of other things could happen,” he said. “But it’s at least cool to see it come together for a short spring season, as a parent, as a coach, in all those ways.”

Genius Hour unlocks the magic of learning

T

o learn more about engineering, five eighth grade boys designed a couch, fitted with frame anchors, wheels and undercarriage LED lights that could be pulled behind a four-wheeler.

“I learned designing is hard!” eighth grader Dallin McCay said about the project. The boys worked through problems with wheel durability and portable charger compatibility for the lights before they had a finished product and a successful ride. They even had to apply their knowledge of angles to get the couch through the classroom door when they presented their project to their teacher and classmates at North Star Academy’s Genius Hour Showcase.

For 10 weeks, students at NSA, a K–9 charter school, worked during the weekly Genius Hour to develop an idea into a real-world product or service project.

Some students worked on individual projects to learn more about origami, yetis, magnets, circuits, wilderness survival or the history of music. Others worked in groups, making and selling bracelets to earn money for a children’s cancer charity or tying blankets for the animal shelter.

Some projects were developed to solve a problem. Seventh graders Bryson Froebe and Brayden Smith were tired of tripping over books on the classroom floor, so they engineered and built a desk organizer. Macy Smith and Emery Briggs started a recycling club

to clean up trash around the school. A group of middle schoolers made stress balls to give to stressed-out younger students.

NSA teacher Michelle Stewart was impressed with what her fifth graders accomplished.

“I had three kids build and program a drone, and I had two kids make a gaming website,” she said.

She said Genius Hour gives students time to explore topics they enjoy so they are excited to learn.

“Their excitement has just been through the roof with this,” she said.

“They are just passionate about it because they’re doing what they want to do; they have a complete buy-in.”

Students worked through six steps to develop their ideas: brainstorm, make a plan, research, create/test/improve, share and reflect.

“They have this big idea of what they want to do, and it really broke down the process of how to figure out what they needed to do,” Stewart said.

The independent project taught students critical thinking skills, goal setting, collaboration and creative problem-solving.

“They came to realizations more on their own without me having to guide them,” Stewart said. “I just felt like they really learned a lot this way.”

NSA Enrichment Specialist Jamie VanLeuven said Genius Hour projects are above and beyond what teachers normally ask of students in class. She

was impressed when a fifth grader taught himself a programming language so he could code a video game for his project.

“For a fifth grader to take that initiative and figure it out, and learn the programming tutorials on his own, that’s not something a normal curriculum would include,” VanLeuven said.

She said students with behavioral challenges, learning challenges or special needs thrive with the Genius Hour program. She has seen dramatic behavior changes in these students as they are allowed to work at their own pace on a topic they chose.

“To see those kids thrive in the general ed classroom, just really excites me,” VanLeuven said.

Genius Hour is part of the schoolwide enrichment model that is the basis of NSA’s charter. It is inspired by Joseph Renzulli, who said, “Where interest and ability intersect, magic happens.”

In previous years, the Genius Hour was called Clusters and students joined a mixed grade class, based on their interests, to work as a group on a product or service project. This year, students had to remain in their own classrooms to work on individual and smaller group projects to follow COVID-19 safety guidelines that put limits on inter-class interactions. Stewart said she was reluctant about the change but found most students did better with this year’s program setup. l

How will it work?

Every week, individuals can visit rivertonutah.gov/local to fill out a simple form, attach a picture of a receipt from any Riverton business and be entered to win. Ten random winners will be announced each week and awarded a $100 gift card.

You may enter once per week, however, at the end of each sevenday period the slate will be wiped clean and you must submit a new receipt for each subsequent week.

There is no limit on how many times you can win over the course of the four-month period. Be sure to visit our website for additional details and rules.

Exactly one year ago, in partnership with dozens of local businesses and community partners, Riverton City held the Riverton Business Blitz.

With the effects of COVID-19 challenging the economic viability of our business community, we all pulled together to create a successful event to jumpstart our local economic recovery.

The Business Blitz was paired with four other initiatives that kicked off efforts to help our business community stay afloat during the pandemic. While we were focused on holding steady, we are now turning our attention towards rebuilding. In March 2021, we announced our newest marketing and public education campaign called “Local First.”

This campaign is geared towards helping our business community by emphasizing the benefits of shopping local and encouraging residents to frequent Riverton businesses.

By Councilmember Tawnee McCay Have you ever wanted to list your second-choice candidate, felt like your vote didn’t count, or wished an election was less contentious? I know I have.

Riverton City is taking part in an innovative pilot project called Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) this year for our city elections. RCV is an electoral system that allows you to vote for multiple candidates in order of preference instead of choosing just one.

When you receive your ballot, you can list your first, second, third choice (or more) for each position.

With RCV, if there are five candidates in the race, you can rank them 1-5, you can rank your top three choices or you can vote for only one, if you would like.

If one candidate wins the majority (more than 50%) of the first-choice votes, that individual wins. But if for example, your first-choice candidate got the least votes, they would be eliminated, but your vote would still count, it would move to your second-choice candidate. This continues until a candidate has the majority of votes.

Ranked Choice Voting is an electoral system that allows you to vote for multiple candidates in order of preference instead of choosing just one.

I like RCV for several reasons. By ranking the candidates, we are able to get more information from the voters giving you a stronger voice.

It can also save the city significant time and money (around $20,000) by eliminating the need for a primary election so only a general election is needed. It also leads to more civil elections because even if a candidate finds they are not the voter’s first choice, they want to be their second, leading to less negative campaigning.

Payson and Vineyard cities used RCV in their last municipal election and an exit survey found 82.5% of the voters liked RCV and wanted to

use it again. An increasing number of groups are using RCV including the Utah Republican Party, New York City, Maine and countries including Australia and New Zealand.

Riverton’s general election for at-large Mayor and City Council members from District 3 and 4 will be on Tuesday, November 2, 2021.

The city will be sending a video and other content about RCV as the election nears. If you have changes to your voter registration or need to update your address, go to vote. utah.gov. Feel free to reach out to your council member with any questions or suggestions for our city.

UFA Spotlight: Captain Brian Beck

By Chief Wade Watkins Captain Brian Beck has recently been assigned to serve Riverton City as the heavy rescue captain at Riverton’s Fire Station 121. He has replaced Captain Charles Dejournett who retired this past December after an incredible career.

Captain Beck is known for his kindness and well-natured approach to serving the community and his fellow firefighters. His strong leadership and desire to look out for his crew members make him a standout. He has served as a firefighter, paramedic, captain and now heavy rescue captain.

His new assignment will come with long training days and more

responsibility since Heavy Rescue 121 responds on low and high angle rope rescue, trench rescue, vehicle extrication and confined space rescue incidents, with the additional responsibility of responding as the rapid intervention team for firefighter rescue incidents.

Additionally, he serves as a flight paramedic for Life Flight. He has been a flight paramedic for the past eight years and truly enjoys responding across the west to perform emergency treatment and transport.

Captain Beck is a dedicated father and enjoys traveling with his son Boston and fiancé Katie. As UFA’s Riverton liaison I absolutely enjoy working with Captain Beck. He’s fun to be around, and truth be known, really fun to tease. Please say hello to Captain Beck when you see him in the community.

Riverton baseball traverses season with three seniors

Intermountain Riverton Hospital Earns Level IV Trauma Center Designation T

Riverton Hospital has received a Level IV trauma center designation from the Utah Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.

Earning a Level IV trauma center designation certifies Riverton hospital can provide advanced trauma life support to evaluate and stabilize patients before transferring them to a higher-level trauma center, if needed. Level IV trauma centers must also meet strict criteria and be equipped to provide advanced trauma life support at all times.

The Level IV designation was awarded after an extensive review and survey by the bureau. Surveyors praised the hospital for good leadership, excellent relationships with emergency medical services first responders and other community partners, as well as well-designed mass transfusion protocols.

The designation assures that the best resources are at the bedside of the patients and helps many Riverton Hospital patients to receive trauma care closer to home.

“This is excellent recognition of the care our team provides to all patients and the processes we’ve developed to continually improve care,” says Todd Neubert, RN, Riverton Hospital administrator. “Thanks to our Riverton Hospital team for ensuring our hospital is known for quality, safety, and overall excellence.”

For patients needing specialized advanced care, Riverton Hospital will rapidly assess and stabilize patients and function as the entry point to Intermountain’s system of integrated specialty care.

“The entire Riverton team has worked diligently to meet all the state requirements,” says Spencer Proctor, MD, trauma medical director at Riverton Hospital. “Our whole community will benefit from this designation.”

Five trauma level designations are recognized. Higher-level facilities, I and II and III, treat more complex patients.

here’s a unique dynamic on the Riverton High School baseball team’s roster this season.

Of the 32 players on the roster, three of them are seniors. That means while the majority of those playing for the Silverwolves are underclassmen with little to no varsity experience, especially since there was an abbreviated season last year.

This has put all players in unique roles with their own set of challenges, but Riverton baseball coach Jay Applegate said his team has shown a lot of character through it all.

“It’s tough when you’re not on the field, but so far, everybody’s accepted their role and tried to be prepared that when their number is called to go out on the field, they’re ready to go,” he said. “As a coaching staff, that’s something that you really appreciate.”

Team statistics show the majority of the underclassmen getting experience are juniors, but there are some sophomores and freshmen in the mix. The team’s three seniors—Tryston Musgrove, Weston Curtis and Mark Henderson—all take on leadership roles.

Both Musgrove and Curtis are captains who have significant playing time, while Henderson makes his appearances mostly as a pitcher. Applegate said all three have added a lot to his team both on and off the field.

“They know their roles, and they understand what they need to do,” he said. “So far, they have done a great job leading the team.”

Musgrove and Curtis have multiple opportunities to show their leadership as captains. During an April 9 game against Lone Peak High School, freshman pitcher Zach Edwards found himself in a hole.

In the top of the second inning, Riverton was in the midst of giving up what would eventually be six runs. Edwards was on the mound and helped the Silverwolves get out of the inning.

The dugout shouted its support throughout the inning, and there were visits to the mound to help Edwards get through the inning. The seniors have found themselves helping the younger players in similar circumstances throughout the season.

“A lot of it is encouraging them, because a lot of time, especially in baseball, things don’t go your way,” Curtis said. “[We’re] just helping them realize nobody’s perfect in this game and helping them know that whatever happens, happens; you keep your head up and keep working hard.”

Applegate said many of the juniors, who he knew had varsity talent, were “thrown into the deep end” in terms of experience. Getting them varsity experience has been the main goal for the Riverton coaching staff.

“I can tell you where we’re at right now versus the start of the season, we’ve taken some giant steps,” he said. “We’re definitely

not where we want to be, but I think that’s just a process. It’s a journey, not a race.”

Obtaining that experience has come in many ways. Musgrove said there have been times when he and Curtis have had to come out to allow for an underclassmen to gain experience.

“We don’t care if they take our positions,” he said. “We have each other’s backs when they do.”

This type of mentality is possible because of the brotherhood that exists among the student-athletes. Musgrove said that fraternity comes from spending time together away from baseball and working together in it.

Curtis said because there are few seniors, they spend a lot of time with the underclassmen “probably more than typical seniors would.”

The bond isn’t only strong between the underclassmen. Curtis said he feels a close relationship with his fellow seniors because they work together instead of competing against each other.

While Riverton has seen both successes and shortcomings on the field, Applegate said he is happy with the progress because of how they’ve learned to make sacrifices for each other.

“That’s one thing we’ve really enjoyed,” he said. “Their chemistry, their brotherhood has been really tight so far.” l

Mountain Ridge softball aiming for school’s first region championship

W

ith a 10-0 start to the season (5-0 in region), the Mountain Ridge softball team has high hopes for its first full season, including a goal to capture the school’s first region championship for a team sport.

“One thing I’m really excited for is that we have a chance to be the first team here at Mountain Ridge to win a region title,” said head coach Andre Ashton, who previously coached baseball at West Jordan High and boys basketball at Herriman High. “None of our other sports have been able to do that yet.”

While individual athletes such as swimmers and wrestlers have won region and state championships for the second -ear school, no team has yet won a trophy for the Sentinels.

Even last year, in the school’s inaugural year, Ashton expected his team to do well.

“With our whole new school, there was a theme of us getting beat up on,” he said.” But softball-wise, we had a lot of girls come over from Riverton and Herriman.”

Taegan Smith, a junior shortstop and a team captain, said she was intrigued by the prospect of helping to build a new program from scratch.

a legacy and make a name for Mountain Ridge,” she said.

Of course, that legacy-building had to be put off for a year.

“We were going to have a good year,” Ashton said. “We started off 2-1. All our other sports were super young and inexperienced. But we were expecting to have a really good season last year, but obviously that got cut short.”

If there were any Region 7 coaches who underestimated the brand new school last year, they’ve certainly been made aware by now. In five region games so far, the team has outscored its opponents 82-18. In all competition, it holds a 158-24 scoring advantage.

The Sentinels have 10 players with a batting average of .400 or better (minimum of 20 at-bats). Junior Tessa Hokanson leads the team in runs and hits with 24 apiece and has a .667 batting average. Smith leads the team in home runs (seven) and RBI (29). The other team captain, senior outfielder Kiley Avery, is batting .636 and has 21 hits and has scored 20 runs.

“The strength of our team is definitely our hitting,” Smith said. “We’re also gelling really well and all getting along as a team.”

Ashton agreed that hitting is the team’s strength but added that they still need to work on its defense if it wants to achieve its goals.

“Our defense is coming along,” he said.

“We’ve had a couple errors in the first few games. We’re always going to hit, and then if our defense and pitching come along on the backside, I think we’re going to be pretty hard to beat.”

The Sentinels will have a chance to prove themselves at the state softball tournament, which begins May 14. l

Cultural education key to connection

T

he key to preventing hate crimes against Asian people, such as other communities have experienced recently, may be as simple as cultural education.

Hsiu-Ying Yang, a Chinese dual-language immersion teacher at Oquirrh Hills Middle School, believes students benefit from language immersion and world language programs which expose them to different cultures.

“I told my students, you don’t need to like them, but you need to understand different people coming from different cultures; they have different perspectives on life, they have different customs and celebrations,” Yang said. “If we have mutual understanding, that will help this society become a more united one.”

Yang said when there is no understanding of the cultural norms of Asian people, there is hatred and contention, as seen in some cities where Asian people have been harassed for wearing masks by those who don’t understand their cultural differences: when Asian people have a cold or the flu, they wear a mask; when Americans have a cold or the flu, they stay home from work and school.

Yang believes the sentiment of Nelson ManAt Oquirrh Hills Middle School, it’s not just the Chinese DLI students, whose curriculum includes cultural education, who participate in cultural activities, crafts, celebrations and international pen pal exchanges.

“If a student can learn the language, if they like the language, they like the culture, it brings connection—the heart is for connection,” Yang said. “So we try to open another world for our students to explore. And I always tell my students, use your heart first, because your heart is more powerful than your mind.”

At Oquirrh Hills Middle School, it’s not just the Chinese DLI students, whose curriculum includes cultural education, who participate in cultural activities, crafts, celebrations and international pen pal exchanges. All students were invited to write letters to students at a sister school in Xing Xiang, China, a relationship Principal Donna Hunter arranged while on a tour there two years ago.

When she met with the principal there, she found they shared the same goal: to prepare their kids to make a difference in the world. To do that, Hunter said her students need a wide range of experiences.

“These kids have got to know that there is a big world out there,” she said. “The more exposure they have to positive, good things that are out in the world, the better prepared they will be to get out of here and make a difference in the world.”

The two schools exchanged letters and videos last year. School librarian Paula Butterfield spearheaded a project to collect 200 letters, which were mailed in October.

Seventh grader Gracie Nielsen, a DLI student, felt confident enough in her language skills to write her letter in Chinese.

“I wrote down what I like to do, what my favorite sport is, and my favorite foods,” she said. She also asked what they would do if they came to America and told them what she would do if she could go to China.

There has been no response from the Chinese school, and Butterfield said, at this point,

she doesn’t expect to hear back from them at all.

Yang suspects the letters got held up by the Chinese government so she arranged for a pen pal exchange with GueiRen Junior High in Taiwan for her eighth and ninth grade DLI students this semester. It’s an opportunity for them to practice their language skills and learn how to format a Chinese letter. But writing the letters is also just a meaningful real life experience that’s not just about the grade, Yang said.

“We decided we need to make more international friends, so our students can have an authentic experience by connecting with another community in a native language speaking country,” Yang said. “It’s a real-life experience, it’s why you learn the language, because you can broaden your world by getting to know friends and their culture.”

The two schools have exchanged individual letters and video messages and have sent each other videos of after school activities and cultural celebrations.

During Chinese New Year, OHMS hosted a celebration with activities and crafts for the whole student body.

Chinese culture is also highlighted, along with French and Spanish cultures, during World Language Week, held each year in February at OHMS. Students learn dances and sample food from the different countries and participate in activities—breaking a pinata, watching a movie in French, and making Chinese origami.

Yang, who is from Taiwan, moved to the U.S. 10 years ago to teach in Utah’s DLI program. She loves that her students are curious and excited to explore. She tries to balance the language lessons with creative, hands-on cultural activities.

“We need to balance, because the linguistics is something working on the mind, but the projects, the culture, is something from their heart,” Yang said. “I want them to connect with their heart.”

She gives students a choice in how to learn or demonstrate proficiency in a skill.

“You need to give them the things they want to do, and they will connect to their heart and the heart is more powerful than their mind, that’s my belief,” she said.

The after-school activities OHMS provides are taught by Amanda Conklin, known as Su Ma Ma, who is from Taiwan. Conklin started as a mother volunteering to read Chinese stories in her daughter’s class to support the DLI program.

She now runs a nonprofit business, providing cultural enrichment activities for teachers and students in Chinese language programs in several states. She also hosts international cultural exchange tours and summer camps for students.

Mountain Ridge lacrosse building more than winning program

hen it comes to coaching lacrosse, Mountain Ridge High School’s Trent Bangert has more concerns than just on-field play.

In fact, when he took the head coaching job at Mountain Ridge, Bangert said he liked the prospect of building a culture from the ground up at a school that opened in 2019.

This was appealing because he sees himself as a culture coach.

“Winning games is great, but I want to send these players off with life lessons and try to create leaders in every one of these young men,” he said.

Bangert is using four pillars in crafting that culture: teamwork, keeping things simple, prioritizing and executing, and distributed leadership.

While the culture is important, Bangert said the young men on his team mesh well with the culture.

“I’ve got a really good group of boys, and I’ve coached these boys for a few years at other programs, and they are really a brotherhood,” he said. “They respect the game, and they respect everything. We try to build trust amongst the teammates, the players, the coaches and try to make it more a family.”

That family environment fosters a lot.

Senior Dallin Tanner said since everyone treats each other with respect, it makes the players want to pay it forward.

“We don’t want to have that reputation as a sports program to be the jerky team,” he said. “We just want to build up the school more than tear it down.”

Mountain Ridge recently traveled to Alta High School for what would turn out to be a highly competitive match. In an email relaying the story, MRHS assistant softball coach Callie Fielding, who attended, said the match was physical and the referees were letting a lot go.

At one point, Alta junior Ian Bushell injured his knee and tried to hobble off the field while the game was still in motion. Mountain Ridge junior Colby Roberts noticed Bushell’s struggle and immediately went to help.

In Fielding’s recount, she said it seemed Bushell fell into Roberts’s arms and looked “so thankful someone came to help him.”

The efforts don’t stop there. Bangert recalled a time when a recent snowstorm hit the area earlier this school year and his players were helping push cars out that were stuck.

With culture being so important to Bangert, seeing actions like these make him proud of his players.

“I’ve coached some teams and you do have the players that don’t buy in,” he said.

“You can’t get everyone bought in. This team, out of all the teams I’ve coached, everybody’s on board.”

the team so receptive, offensive coordinator Taylor Brundage said, is the team is full of go-getters.

“We’re not really singling out anybody as a main leader,” he said. “They all take care of their stuff, and they motivate everyone else.”

As for why these student-athletes thrive and embrace what the coaching staff is trying to implement, Bangert said he’s still stumped.

He said he knows they’ve been together for a long time and have a lot of trust in each other. He hopes he’s had an impact on them to help them buy in, but all he knows for sure is it appears easy for them.

“Anything you ask for, they do,” Bangert said. “If they do make a mistake here or there, it’s corrected, they apologize, they hold each other accountable. It’s just a great environment right now.”

That environment has not only spawned a group of kids willing to serve at a moment’s notice but that is having success on the field.

The Sentinels started the season off with a 7-1 overall record.

Tanner credits a lot of the early success to that brotherhood and culture the coaches helped establish. He also said there is a lot of trust among the players, which makes it easier to play in sync.

“It’s a team sport for a reason, right?” he said. “You need every position, and I think everyone is comfortable with each other in those positions, and everyone is comfortable with each other as a player.”

But Tanner said the credit doesn’t only sit with the players. He pointed to the coaching staff for helping foster such a good environment that allows this team to flourish.

Bangert isn’t only focused on this season. He’s got an eye for the future, recognizing this team has laid a foundation for where this young school goes in terms of culture and philosophy.

So far, Bangert says he likes the trajectory.

“With this team and how they’re completely bought in and the season we’re having and are going to continue to have, I think, is going to make the buy-in that much easier for the younger kids when they’re coming up,” he said. l

Better than perfect Moms are good for all kinds of things; homemade cookies, clean underwear, and guilt, just to name a few. Although each mom is different, we often feel we’re doing everything wrong when it comes to raising children. Do we back off, step in, offer advice, stay silent, help them succeed, let them fail?

We’re never sure and we’re usually winging it, just doing the best we can.

It reminds me of when my brother knocked the wind out of himself by being stupid. Mom thought he was choking and performed the Heimlich. He couldn’t breathe for two hours. She did the best she could with the information she had.

I love mom but she wasn’t perfect.

Thank heavens.

She cheated at Skip-Bo, had no patience with stupidity, and hated animals with a passion. When she got remarried and moved to a ranch in North Carolina, we found it a unique and hilarious karma. Her emails to me often started with, “Well, I kicked the rooster again today.”

Mom might have loathed poultry, but when the wind snapped her beautiful globe willow tree in half, she mourned it like a family member. Every spring, mom’s garden would bloom with color. She loved ladybugs and butterflies. She’d also hand my daughters a saltshaker and tell them to feed the snails.

She taught my girls that flipping off another driver was perfectly acceptable – even necessary. Convinced that video games would usher in the apocalypse, mom refused to buy an Atari system, but she sewed puppets to teach us stories from classic literature like Hamlet and Beowulf. (I threw the Ophelia hand puppet into the river, watching her skirts float up around her as she sank to her death.

My childhood was a bit melodramatic.)

Mom could be stubborn to the point of madness, but she was also whip smart and ready to jump into a theological debate at the drop of a Bible.

She’d experienced a lot of loss and trauma in her life and wasn’t a mom who showered us with hugs and kisses, but we never

doubted she loved us. She wasn’t just a mama bear; she was a mama velociraptor when it came to defending her kids.

Mom once told me her children were her inspiration. An inspiration to move across the country.

As a final joke, mom requested each of her children to speak at her funeral. I considered digging up the Beowulf puppets and delivering her eulogy via Grendel, the monstrous creature doomed to wander the earth.

She would have loved it.

Mom worked as a teacher’s aide at an elementary school before she died. (I don’t think the two are connected, but it was an elementary school.) At the funeral, her coworkers told me what a great woman she was. I already knew that.

We often put the dead on a pedestal (which is dangerous because they can roll off and fall on people). But mom wouldn’t want to be remembered as being a perfect person who never messed up, got angry, felt alone, burned dinner, swore, failed, tried again, and again, and again.

If you’re a mom on Mother’s Day this year, that’s the message for you. You were never meant to get everything right. You don’t need to achieve perfection. It isn’t even possible. Just embrace your wonderful messiness.

My mom was better than perfect. She was human.

laying college football was always a goal Ryan Miller had for his son Justin Miller, but how much he played was cause for debate.

Early on, Ryan saw his son as someone who could maybe just make a collegiate team. As time wore on, Ryan’s perception changed to Justin not just making a team but making an impact.

Those dreams became reality this past spring when Justin, a Summit Academy graduate, led Southern Utah University as the Thunderbirds’ starting quarterback.

This accomplishment was the culmination of a journey that began long before Justin attended Summit Academy and included his father, Ryan, Summit Academy head coach, through much of it.

“It’s just a really, really cool experience when the things he worked for and wanted, in spite of the difficult and roundabout way that he got there, it’s really cool to watch it at least start to happen,” Ryan said.

Road to SUU Justin grew up in Irvine, California, where he played football until his sophomore season. The Millers then moved to Highland where Justin played a season at Lone Peak High School.

Justin then transferred to Summit Academy for his senior season in 2015, amassing 3,359 passing yards, 36 touchdowns and four interceptions. While there, Ryan was defensive coordinator.

The biggest takeaway, however, for Justin was learning leadership. He also had the opportunity to change plays at the line of scrimmage because the school’s offensive coordinator trusted his judgment.

“One of the biggest parts of that was I had to understand our offense and defenses even more so I could get us in the right positions,” Justin said. “So my time at Summit was great. I made a lot of good friends and learned a lot about football in general.”

After graduating, Justin attended Snow College for a season, leading the Badgers to a 7-3 record in 2016 while accumulating 2,124 passing yards with 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Justin competed for the starting role at Snow, learning a new pro-style offense in the process that had him under center a lot.

Rather than opting for another year at Snow, Justin served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Romania. While his mind was Continued page 5
