COLUMBINE SHOOTING SURVIVOR, CRAIG SCOTT, TELLS RIVERTON COMMUNITY AT EIGHTH ‘LIVE IN REAL LIFE’ PROGRAM

uest speaker Craig Scott addressed an auditorium filled with high school students and community members at Riverton High School on Jan. 31 as he reflected on the horrific day of the Columbine High School shooting nearly 23 years ago.

As part of Riverton City’s “Live in Real Life” program, which was launched to combat anxiety, depression and other mental, emotional, and physical health challenges among the teenage population, Scott accepted the invitation to speak on these pressing issues. He reiterated that although the shooting was tragic, he believes there were silver linings and positive messages that can be gleaned from his experience.

Most Americans remember the heartbreak that struck Littleton, Colorado on April 20, 1999. Two high school students rigged Columbine High School with pipe bombs and went on a shooting spree which left 15 individuals, one faculty member and 14 students dead, including both shooters who committed suicide. Among those killed was Scott’s sister, Rachel Joy. “What I have done over the past 22 years is to use my story to help build up and encourage people around us, help teens with their pain, and show that purpose can come from pain,” Scott said.

Scott was 16 years old at the time of the shooting. He recalled studying in the library when he heard popping sounds. Mistaking the noise for a prank, Continued page 5

Chinese immersion students get Olympic-sized lessons

T

o meet the first grade science standard to learn about the needs of living things, first-graders at Foothills Elementary learned about the panda, the mascot of this year’s Olympic Winter Games held in Beijing.

Students also analyzed and memorized a poem about a panda, in English and in Chinese, which met one of their reading standards.

Because the Games took place in China this year, there was a natural tie-in to lessons in students’ Chinese dual language immersion classes. Teachers used the Olympics to teach Chinese culture and language as well as satisfy academic requirements.

Drama specialist Jodi Howell coordinated Olympics-inspired lessons at each grade level to create an Olympics kick-off celebration, performed for parents and peers in early February, to share what they had learned and demonstrate their Chinese speaking skills.

Sixth grade students, acting as newscasters, introduced various aspects of the Winter Games in English and Chinese.

Fourth-graders introduced the Olympic events in Chinese and with silhouette scenes.

As part of studying Utah history, they had learned about the development of recreation, sports and tourism in Utah and the 2002 Winter Games held in Salt Lake City.

Second-graders participated in a torch relay, satisfying a standard of learning to work effectively independently and cooperatively.

Third-graders learned about the symbolism of the Olympic rings as they learned about the world’s continents in social studies.

The Olympics was used as a social studies topic for fifth-graders as they met the standard to “identify a current issue facing the world and propose a role the United States could play in being part of a solution.”

“We discussed the importance of the Olympics, and how it has historically been a way for countries to put aside their political

differences and compete in a peaceful spirit of sportsmanship,” Howell said.

Danny Jones said this lesson had an effect on his fifth grade son.

“It has really helped him understand how the countries unify in the Olympics and, yes, they're competing, but they're also supporting each other,” Jones said.

Sixth-graders also discussed the Olympics as a unifying world event. One of their social studies standards challenged them to “Identify individuals and groups making positive changes in the world today and support these choices with evidence.”

“We discussed athletes representing their countries through sport, and the example they set for people in their own country and around the world,” Howell said.

Sixth-graders also created the flags, traditional costumes and learned the greetings of various countries they’d studied to create a Parade of Nations for the program.

Jones said the program was impressive and got him excited to watch the Olympics. He said for the first time his kids were looking forward to it, too. His wife, Audrey Jones, said after seeing the DLI students perform in Chinese New Year programs for the past five years, it was nice to see something different this year.

“Incorporating the Olympics made it refreshing and new for us as parents,” she said.

Some teachers continued to use the Olympic theme to keep lessons fresh and fun as the Games continued through the month of February. Fourth grade teacher Amy Peterson used data from the daily medal count to create math word problems. For an opinion writing assignment, her students wrote about why they want to be an Olympic athlete and which Olympic sport they think is the most fun. l

Continued from front page students carried on until a teacher ran frantically into the library telling everyone to get under the tables.

“I got this feeling that it wasn’t a prank, it was serious,” Scott said. He hid under a table with Isaiah Shoels, one of the few African American students at Columbine, and Matthew Kechter, both of whom were killed by one of the shooters, sparing Scott.

“My ears were ringing so loud from the gunshots, I was feeling so much fear, I thought I was going to die. I felt like my heart was going to stop beating,” he said.

Despite the surreal and dangerous situation, Scott remained calm and offered a prayer for his fear to be taken away. “I felt God speak to me, tell me to get out of there. I heard a calm, peaceful voice say, ‘Be still,’” he recalled.

Once the coast was clear, Scott helped a student who sustained a gunshot wound out of the library to safety.

The library then became the backdrop of a shootout with police. After the perpetrators took their own lives and emergency personnel secured the scene, Scott felt something happened to his sister Rachel. “A friend tapped me on the shoulder and said a girl had been shot over there. I couldn’t tell [at the time but] I was looking at my sister,” Scott said. Word soon came from the police department that Rachel was among the casualties.

Having little time to process the event, Scott found himself bewildered but remembered how angry he felt. “I dealt with a lot of things, grief from losing my sister, my parents losing a daughter. But one of biggest emotions I felt afterward was anger,” Scott said.

He recalled how the media covered the shooting, portraying the shooters in a different light as two teenagers on the brink, suffering bullying and being outcast. However, Scott believed the shooters were focusing on negative thoughts which translated into hatred and eventually manifested into their carrying out the massacre.

The trauma weighed on the young Scott who experienced nightmares to sleepless nights for a year after the shooting. One night, while watching a violent movie with his younger brother, a scene triggered Scott.

“I told my brother to change the channel,” Scott said. “The movie got more violent, and I started to have more flashbacks.”

Scott remembered slamming his brother on the kitchen floor holding up a knife to his face and asked, “Do want to know what if feels like to almost lose your life?” Scott deeply regretted the encounter. “All of a sudden I realized what I was doing. I dropped the knife. I was becoming the very thing I hated.”

Sometime later, Scott went to South Africa on a humanitarian mission in Rachel’s stead. There he shared the story of a Zulu man who revealed his whole tribe was slaughtered by another tribe, 17 members of his family were killed by machete. Yet,

the Zulu man was still forgiving toward his family’s killers. "Then he told me something I never forgot. He said, 'Forgiveness is like setting a prisoner free and finding out that prisoner is you,'" Scott said.

That experience proved a turning point to escape from the depressing “black cloud” he was wrestling with for so long. From that point on, he decided to share his story, focusing on forgiveness, faith, healing, positivity and release.

Five messages he relayed to attendees were letting go of the past, what one’s attention is placed on is given power, take control of thoughts, look for the good by keeping perspective, and starting a positive chain reaction. The latter message was inspired by Rachel who inspired others to be kind through the life she led. On social media, people participate in Rachel’s Challenge by performing acts of compassion towards others.

According to the nonprofit website, Rachel’sChallenge.org, “[Rachel’s] family soon realized that [her] story could help transform the way we relate to each other, and how we feel about ourselves. It provides an antidote: a path to ending school violence, bullying, self-harm and suicide. How? By creating positive connections that improve self-worth and mental health.” The challenge has reached 29 million students and educators in schools across the country.

Scott relayed that despite Rachel’s short life, she left behind a legacy of positivity through journals she kept riddled with messages which serve as an inspiration for young people struggling with mental and emotional health. One of her writings reads, “Compassion is the greatest form of love humans have to offer. I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go.”

Connecting Rachel’s theory, Scott cited recent events, increased isolation during the pandemic, rise in gun violence, and increased school shootings which are weighing on the country. Cutting through the heavy recollection of the shooting, Scott encouraged audience members to reach out to those around them by giving high-fives and hugs. Even dancing to music allowed a much-needed moment of levity. He urged attendees to turn the emotions of anger, fear, sadness and nervousness to determination, courage, appreciation, and excitement.

Flanked by Riverton High School students, members of the HOPE Squad, and Riverton Madrigals, Sean’s Garage Band performed The Beatles song entitled, “I get by with a little help from my friends”.

Mayor Trent Staggs introduced Scott, explaining that the city of Riverton began investing in programs and events which would encourage the discussion of suicide prevention in schools. A roundtable of educators and community members was hosted in 2018.

"From that roundtable, we heard two things: They said, 'It really would be nice if we had more school resource officers,' and, 'Is there something the city can do to help us talk about the alarming trend in anxiety and depression and just other mental health challenges?'" Staggs said. Thus the “Live in Real Life” program was created.

Among the attendees of the event were three alumnae of Columbine High School.

Sarah Bush ’01, Laura Hall ’02, and Mandy Marquardson ’99 remember the day vividly.

Bush was Scott’s classmate; she admires his ability to covey his message from that day.

“It was really hard to watch the footage.

That part was really hard, but the message overall was amazing,” Bush said. Marquardson agrees. “He’s turned it into helping people in a positive light,” Marquardson said.

They said it took years to come to terms with the event. Although the event happened over two decades ago, coping with that day is still a struggle. Marquardson said she faced negativity from individuals when they found out she graduated from Columbine.

“It took me years to be able to say that I went to Columbine. It’s taken me years to come to grips with it,” she said.

Even replaying the footage was hard for Hall. “It’s been 22 years and I just had to leave the room,” Hall said. “I couldn’t do it. It’s different for everybody, but there is no timeline for healing.” Like Scott’s story, Bush and Hall, who are sisters, decided to share their experiences with anyone who would listen.

“Sarah and I started sharing our story in 2017 after the Parkland, Florida shooting,” Hall said.

“We’ve joined with other Columbine alumni in speaking where we could,” Bush added. “We found a lot of healing in it. It rips off the band-aid, but it’s also a double-edged sword: you get healing from it, but it’s rough

to face it. It’s not something we get over; we still have nightmares. It’s just something we have to live with.”

Bush and Hall have organized programs with various schools and law enforcement agencies in Utah. They said they experienced pushback from school administrators when they offered to speak about their experiences at Columbine because administrators were afraid such conversations would inspire individuals to carryout shootings. “[Our efforts have been in] trying to get people involved in reunification programs and promoting school safety. A lot of schools won’t let us come because they are afraid that by us sharing our experience, it might spark someone to be a copycat, which is really sad because it is a discussion meant to promote prevention,” Bush said. “It’s worth it to us to share our experience in the hope that it could prevent another Columbine.”

Marquardson added a support system is important for those who experienced similar tragic events. “I think it is also important for other people to know they have somebody else. I never knew anyone else who was in a school shooting, but there are people that others can reach out to and relate to,” Marquardson said.

All three agree there should be more discussions about preventing school shootings and enforcing stricter rules on who can get dangerous firearms. Scott’s story is an important part of that narrative. “He starts sharing his story, and that creates a personal connection to somebody who has experienced something similar, but we talk about the positive by leading a fulfilling life,” Hall said.

All three alumnae hope more schools in Utah will begin having discussions about these types of events. “Props to Riverton City for taking the initiative,” Hall said. “I just think that’s amazing.” l

The art of Chinese New Year

C

olorful dragons prowl the halls, red paper lanterns hang from the ceilings and chunlian couplets (Chinese poetry) hang on either side of the principal’s door. This is what celebrating Chinese New Year at Southland Elementary School, one of the Jordan District’s Chinese dual language immersion schools, looks like.

“To truly learn a language, learners need to understand the culture, traditions and food that influence that language,” DLI teacher Lay Kou said. “Chinese New Year is the most celebrated of all Chinese festivals, so it makes sense for students to learn about it.”

Kou and her colleagues incorporated traditional holiday activities, art projects and treats into their lessons for the 15 day holiday.

“I think it’s just so cool to learn about Chinese culture because there’s a lot of things you get to do and you have a lot of fun doing Chinese activities, learning about things other people do for fun,” a sixth-grader said.

Students learned dances and songs, and played chopstick games and Chinese yo-yo.

The sixth graders had a Chinese rap battle.

The majority of the holiday activities were based on arts and crafts. Students cut paper designs, created banners of poetry, painted pictures of flowers, and folded paper lanterns, puppets and origami to learn about the symbols of the holiday.

“Arts and crafts bring out the aesthetics in a culture,” Kou said. “They tell stories of a culture's past. They teach learners the values of that culture. In Chinese culture, art tells people what the Chinese believe, what values they treasure and practice.”

Students also learned the art of making dumplings. Some classes practiced the technique by wrapping chocolates. Others used Play-Doh. First grade teacher Li Xu helped

Numbers increasing—as well as overall quality—for girls wrestling program

E

leven girls form the Riverton girls wrestling team. All 11 went to state in February in what is the second year for girls wrestling as a sanctioned high school sport.

The growth from seven participants simply learning the basics of the sport in the program’s first year to its second year sending all 11 wrestlers to state (with nine of them finishing in the top six at divisionals) is pleasing to say the least for second-year head coach Becca Hamilton.

“Growth wise I see a lot more aggression, more passion in the girls this year than I did last year,” Hamilton said of the team’s improvement. “This year it’s been a total flipped switch.”

The first year of the program, Hamilton said, was about “getting the ball rolling.”

She understood there would be a learning curve “throwing girls into a new sport,” knowing they had to get their feet wet as beginners.

“You have to doggy paddle before you learn how to swim, and we definitely doggy paddled last year,” she said.

More of them, she said, “have graduated from the paddy cake to actually wrestling. It’s just that learning curve of getting mean.” Which was necessary, she added to prepare them for matches.

Junior Rachel Johnson, who took second in divisionals in the 190 weight class, was one of those girls who joined the sport last year. “It was so new, especially for all the girls. It was just different because not a lot of people knew how to do it, so you’re learning with everyone else.”

But this year, “we’ve gotten a lot better at technique,” she added.

In her first year, Johnson had 18 victories. As a sign of the team’s improvement, heading into state this year, she had 28.

Hamilton said Johnson started the year on the light end of the 245 class, but moved

down to the 190 class to be on the stronger end.

“She would get her butt whooped so she cut down (to 190) and then would slaughter the whole lineup,” Hamilton said.

Sophomore Bella Butterfield took first at divisionals in the 115 weight class. “She worked her butt off and the results showed,” Hamilton said.

Ashlea Larson might be the most seasoned on the team. The senior wrestled with the boys her first two years of high school before the sanctioning. Hamilton noted there are few opponents who can give her a match.

“Sometimes she’ll jump in with the guys to get harder practice,” Hamilton said.

As for the program’s future, Hamilton is positive. The team grew in its second year and she expects more growth as they transition to having a fourth period specific to girls wrestling. Right now they practice after school with the boys. Having the dedicated class time will make it “girls wrestling and not boys and girls wrestling,” she said.

Johnson also hopes more girls join the program, strengthening it, making it bigger.

“It’s so fun, it just helps you gain so much more confidence in wrestling and everything else in life,” Johnson said.

Hamilton hopes to one day have at least two girls in every weight class so they have equal weight partners. But perhaps more importantly for Hamilton, she just wants to see the love of the sport grow.

“Seeing the passion of the girls wrestling is one of my favorite things because I

enjoyed it so much, so just seeing it light a fire under them,” she said.

Hamilton is a trailblazer for Riverton girls wrestling. She wrestled with the boys team as a student from 2015-2018 when she graduated as only one of two girls on the team. She then took over as the program’s first-ever head coach when the sport was sanctioned.

She originally got into the sport for her younger brother.

“He didn’t have a partner so my mom threw me in there,” she said of her beginnings with the sport. “I was tired of being his dummy so I was like, ‘I want to wrestle.’”

Obviously she enjoys beating opponents on the mat, but it’s also the life skills about the sport that stands out to her.

“I really appreciate how much hard work it has taught me. In normal life, you have those flaky people and others who have grown with hard work,” she said. “(For me) it’s helped teach that hard work and accountability.”

“You get out what you put in,” she added.

But it’s learning what you’re physically and mentally capable of that might be what she values most.

“Just how hard you have to push your body,” she said. “That feeling that you can do anything that you really put your mind to.

“What you feel can be like the brink of death, but you can come back and do it again tomorrow. It’s kind of exciting.” l

Results of citizen survey shed new light on city’s future

“W

e had a phenomenal response rate…” Mayor Trent Staggs said in Riverton’s first city council meeting last month in response to the massive participation in the Riverton Citizen Survey that lasted only 10 days in mid-December.

With over 2,800 people, roughly 10% of the adult population of the city, answering the lengthy 31-question survey, the mayor along with the city council feel they will be more equipped to fulfill the project’s purpose to, “assist the city’s elected officials in strategic planning and budgeting efforts.”

The mayor continued, saying, “The amount of participation in this survey is unprecedented…and absolutely shows that our community is becoming more informed and engaged.”

The press release and presentation of the survey results highlighted many positive responses to questions regarding the public opinion of government action in Riverton. According to survey results, “93.05% of residents report[ed] being somewhat or very satisfied with quality of life in Riverton.” Furthermore, “85.42% of residents report[ed] being somewhat or very satisfied with the services provided by the Riverton City Government.”

Other questions were more divided in their responses, however. For example, Question 21 inquired about funding a community recreation center in Riverton. Results showed 1,071 people answering, ‘yes’ to a rec center and 1,032 people answering ‘no’. Another example is a question regarding the revitalization of Riverton’s historic downtown. The most popular response to said question was to "look for additional dining options," which was selected by 28.49% of participants. The next most popular answer was in favor of provid-

ing additional city park amenities which received 21.15% of the votes. In addition, 21.15% of participants do not believe that revitalizing the historic downtown area should be a city priority.

Councilman Sheldon Stewart, who does believe in revitalizing Riverton’s historic downtown, responded to these numbers by saying, “If we can attract tax dollars to our community, it’s going to benefit our community.” This survey will give members of the council more direction on budgeting for future decisions involving the downtown area. The vision for councilmembers like Stewart is to bring in small businesses that can generate what he calls “reoccurring revenue.” Commercial revenue is more beneficial than property tax revenue because of this reoccurring aspect. This can leave more space in a city budget to cut taxes for residents and contribute to the quality of life in Riverton. Stewart continued, “Having business here means that I can live here, I can work here and I can play here.”

The survey, spearheaded by the city’s Director of Communications Casey Saxton, was designed to remove as much bias as possible for an online survey. This was done by remaining neutral in the wording of each question. Saxton was also careful to avoid online responses by non-residents of Riverton by sending a postcard to each Riverton household.

According to the preface of the published results, “The survey is unweighted, meaning there have been no statistical or data adjustments to account for specific characteristics of the actual population (age, gender, location within the city, etc.).” l

Riverton’s Utah Artists Exhibition Open House spotlights four local artists

A

rtists Brian Baity, Anika Ferguson, Gunter Radinger, and David “Oz” Osterczy greeted guests at an open house for the Utah Artists Exhibition held at the Old Dome Meeting Hall in Riverton.

From still-nature macrophotography to delicately carved eggshells, Baity’s art spans several mediums. He learned art in high school but is otherwise self-taught. He refers to Utah dentist, Lou Jensen, as a mentor who also invented the paragraver which is an air-driven drill. Baity relies on the paragraver to transform an impressive array of ostrich, emu, rhea, goose, and chicken eggs into intricately lattice-designed pieces. Baity explains the emu eggs have three layers to their shell, each with their own unique color: black, gray and white. After experimenting, he discovered how to carve the eggshells revealing each layer in different colors with pronounced designed.

One such notable piece was a carved emu egg commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Hogle Zoo featuring a giraffe and zebra. In conjunction with the American Egg Board, Baity has also carved two chicken eggs for First Lady Michelle Obama and First Lady Melania Trump.

The former’s egg, which was presented in 2013, was inspired by Obama’s campaign, “Be Healthy! Be Active! Be You!” to encourage youth to lead healthier lives. The latter’s egg was inspired by Mrs. Trump’s “Be Better” anti-bullying campaign and was presented in 2020. Both pieces are on display at the White House.

Baity also has an assortment of carved gourds with unique inlays of precious stone and pieces of carved eggshell. After creating jewelry for a couple of years, Baity began inlaying turquoise stones into the gourd without cutting deeply into the gourd, which requires a meticulous attention to detail. The gourds he creates are Native American-inspired designs with subtle yellows, blues, reds and blacks. The rim of the gourd is lined with weaved pine needles to add an even earthier touch.

Upon completing high school, Baity joined the Air Force where he met a Dr. Martin whose mantra made quite an impact on the impressionable young artist: “It’s okay to break your crayons,” Baity recalled. “If you think about it, he just wanted me to be creative and think. It’s okay to break your crayons.”

Allowing room for error and the space to create enabled Baity to dabble in the many mediums he utilizes. Although Baity’s figurative crayons takes the form of hundreds of eggshells and gourds, his art is a testament to dedication and impressive attention to detail. plays her “Music and Movement” series which highlights the bond between music and art. Ferguson drew upon her love of music and art to create larger-than-life canvases featuring bold colors and figures playing various instruments that seem to move to the sound of its inspired genre of music.

“I’ve always been an artist,” Ferguson said. “I knew that’s what I was in kindergarten. It was just who I was. It was what I do.

That has never changed.”

While the seed for art was planted during her formative years, her skills took root while studying art at the University of Calgary’s Developmental Arts Program in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Following her formal art studies in Canada, Ferguson transferred to Utah where she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a focus on education.

“I wanted to try to share with the viewer a sound through colors, movement, and textures,” Ferguson said. “As this idea progressed, I found myself explaining my series to professors [and] I was taught about the neurological condition called synesthesia in which information meant to stimulate one of your senses stimulates several of your senses.”

She explains her art is a great example of synesthesia, or the ability to perceive sounds and colors together. One such example is her rocking piece, “The Drummer” recreates the energy one could feel exuded by a drummer banging away at his cymbals: strong, fast-paced, adrenaline-filled. Ferguson’s choice of colors and focus on the drummer’s face reflect those feelings, and if there is enough focus on the painting, one could even begin to hear an intense percussionist beat. She cites Mike Mangini, lead drummer for the progressive metal band, Dream Theater, as inspiration for this piece.

Paul Ferguson, Anika’s husband, is a musician who has been a model for a few of Anika’s paintings, said that his love for music and her affinity for art creates a great combination. “Obviously what brought us together was things we had in common: music, bands, art. She decided to be an artist and I decided to be a musician, and we kind of diverted, but through this series, we came back together again.”

Another eye-catching piece is “Cello Player” which features a young woman playing a cello, whose body seems to move along with her bow. Anika describes how even though the core of the cello is hollow, the music created from it also radiates from the heart of the cellist. This dissonance is demonstrated from each note of the cello which creates its own voice yet harmonizes together to create one perfect song. Similarly, the colors and shapes in the art itself

each have their own dimension, hue, and shape but they harmonize to create one representation of the cellist.

“I was happy to find that my series can bring something new to the viewer. I can share with [the viewer] an experience that I have regularly. It’s a lot of fun now to share my vision of certain sounds with others,” Anika said. Anika can be followed on Instagram @flowerstone_art and online at www. fineartamerica.com.

Gunter Radinger, a German-born artist, focuses his brush on the rustic and rural life of the American west.

“I am a totally self-taught artist,” Radinger said. “I have studied many types of art and have honed my skills through practice and observation of both other artists and many styles and subjects. I challenge myself to try new projects. My travels throughout my life have made it possible to see many venues, this has given me a decided international viewpoint.”

A handful of abstract pieces can be found in the mix of impressive acrylic-painted landscapes and pencil sketches of cowboys. One piece entitled “Bavarian Village” was based on a photo Radinger took of a city in Germany while stationed there 50 years ago. He stumbled upon the

photo while cleaning through his home. He figured the photo was lost but was pleasantly surprised to have found it and decided to paint the image.

Radinger became a U.S. citizen at the age of 19. Upon relocating to Utah, he graduated from the University of Utah with a master's degree in Spanish. Following a stint with the U.S. Military in the early 1970s, he began to pursue art full-time while managing a couple businesses with his wife, Carol. His art has been exhibited in many countries, namely the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, Argentina, Germany, France, and the United States.

David “Oz” Osterczy is a multi-award winning abstract visual artist. He attended the City University of New York-Herbert H. Lehman College. The New York native left the hustle and bustle of the Bronx, to find greater inspiration in the Wasatch mountains of Utah. While Osterczy’s artistic arsenal includes striking landscapes, his forte lies in creating abstract vortexes with intense psychedelic colors.

Displaying his art from New York to Los Angeles, Osterczy has brough joy and creativity to the masses for over a decade.

His unique visual interpretations of nature stand out and elicit questions and curiosity from patrons and clients. Osterczy’s credo is “I am of service to mankind, and I serve with my creations.” This credo is evidenced from his selfless desire to help others during natural disasters, like hurricanes, to more sinister disasters created by human trafficking.

Osterczy has won several awards for his service to mankind, which are not related to his art. He volunteered his weekends for 20 straight months to help rebuild hundreds of homes in the wake of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Five years later, Osterczy found himself in the middle of storm-torn Texas helping communities to rebuild after the destruction of Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

One of Osterczy’s most widely known artistic campaigns took on human trafficking. His “Vorrtex” series helped to raise thousands of dollars through non-fungible tokens or NFTs, donations made by various clients helped to support the cause. He took pieces from his “Implosion” series by superimposing a vortex in the middle of mountains. The vortex represented human traffickers for stealing the souls and lives of youth, and the mountains, echoing youthfulness, represented the victims of human trafficking.

In 2020, Osterczy said the COVID-19 pandemic “destroyed me.” He continued, “If I didn’t go online and learn how to sell online, I would be in a homeless shelter.”

He lost roughly $150,000 in unsold art because of closures to planned exhibitions that year.

“I had friends who when bankrupt, but I didn’t go that route. I had the wherewithal to have enough in the bank to survive almost an entire year of no income,” Osterczy said. After draining a significant amount of his savings, he had to survive by selling thousands of rocks and precious stones he found in southern Utah to make ends-meet.

“That’s part of the way I survived 2020,” he said. Despite the rough patch, Osterczy is optimistic things will start to smooth over.

Although the pandemic did place a prolonged pause on art exhibitions, Anika opened an art studio in April 2021. She felt it was the right move for community members, mostly school kids, to have a space where they could learn and appreciate art.

Anika would set up virtual art lessons and create take home art kits. Despite the daunting realities of COVID, paint brushes will still grace canvases and eggshells will continue to be carved, Baity, Ferguson, Ratinger, and Osterczy along with other artists are hopeful for a strong rebound to the art industry.

Chinese immersion program family comes together to celebrate holiday

risha Teeples, a senior at Herriman High School, has spent 11 years immersed in Chinese language and culture as a student in Jordan District’s Chinese dual language immersion program.

“Learning Chinese has actually been really fun with all the activities we get to do,” she said.

Learning Chinese painting and paper cutting, playing Chinese instruments and performing Chinese dances has always been a part of how students have celebrated Chinese New Year at DLI schools. Teeples said Chinese New Year is also about coming together with family. That is why the Jordan District family of Chinese DLI schools celebrated this year’s holiday with a combined event.

The Chinese DLI program is in its eleventh year, with 1,720 students in grades 1–12 enrolled in four elementary schools, four middle schools and four high schools in Jordan District.

A community Chinese New Year celebration was held at Herriman High School Feb. 2 to celebrate the success of and bring awareness to the program.

“We really want to celebrate their achievement and success and to showcase our students,” Jordan District Chinese DLI

coordinator Kimberly Chen-Pace said.

Elementary and high school DLI students performed for their parents and peers, with traditional dances and songs. Middle school students demonstrated what they have learned through class projects about Chinese instruments, opera, medicine and foods.

Mountain Creek Middle DLI teacher Michael Lu said it was a great opportunity for his students to share their knowledge with younger students and parents because it helped them realize how far they’ve come in their own learning.

“The DLI program is challenging,” he said. “But they progress each day and this is an opportunity for them to see the achievements they have made.”

Eastlake Elementary fifth grade DLI teacher Thomas Boulay said it helped younger students to see older students and get an idea of how much they will know in a few years. Parents also got the chance to see the potential for their children who are just starting out in the DLI program.

The celebration exposed Heidi Goodrich to some of what her son Braeden has been so excited to learn in his second grade DLI class at Eastlake Elementary, such as writing Chinese characters and creating Chinese crafts. Goodrich said exposing her son

to different cultures is one of the reasons she placed him in the DLI program.

Culture is an integral part of the DLI program.

“We expect students to learn language through learning culture,” state DLI specialist Chi Kao said.

Older students take Chinese history and modern Chinese culture classes, while younger students explore Chinese culture through arts, crafts and games.

With a degree in English as a Second Language and experience teaching English to Chinese children, Alexis Tanner understands the cognitive benefits for young children who learn a second language. That’s why she has enrolled her son in the Chinese DLI program at Foothills Elementary.

Teachers get a much needed wellness day

eachers were at a breaking point when the omicron surge hit in January.

“It's the accumulated stress of the last two years that has made things difficult for every employee,” Jordan School District Superintendent Anthony Godfrey said. “Plus, because we're understaffed and it's difficult finding substitutes, many times employees have to do not only their own work but the work of others. It's a big strain to have to continue to do that day in and day out.”

To give district employees a much needed break, the Flex Friday (online day) scheduled for Feb. 11 was adapted to a health and wellness day.

“It's just a chance for us to stop and focus on student, family and employee health and wellness as we gear up for the remainder of the year,” Godfrey said. “It's been a very difficult year, perhaps the most difficult, and so I think everyone benefits from taking time to take care of themselves and to refocus.”

Employees were invited to use the day to catch up on work (without having to fit in times to meet with students), to utilize mental health resources or to take a day off (without having to find a sub.) Unlike a professional development day, there were no required meetings or trainings.

Butterfield Canyon Elementary assistant principal Angie Hamilton was grateful.

“I thought that was really cool that they're recognizing and appreciating what teachers are going through,” she said. “Everybody is hanging on by a thread, so any recognition or time for themselves is so appreciated.”

The team of third grade teachers at Butterfield Canyon Elementary used the day to lesson-plan together. They were able

to enjoy time together, go out to lunch and just enjoy the day, Principal Michelle Peterson said.

After she checked in on her teachers, Peterson attended a wellness class, and then she went swimming, one of her favorite pastimes. As an educator for 30 years, she said it was the first time she’s seen a district provide this kind of resource for its employees.

Many local businesses also offered employees free access to gyms and fitness centers. Local Swig locations offered free drinks.

Jordan District offered employees and students access to 50 on-demand health and wellness classes through the Cook Center for Human Connection. Additionally, district employees taught classes, in-person and remotely, on yoga and personal and professional stress management.

A team of teachers from Kauri Sue Hamilton School attended “Finding Fulfillment in Life and Work” and came away with some tips to help themselves and their students. After the class, they ate their free lunch at the onsite food truck, and then headed back to the school to catch up on work.

“It definitely was great to just get work done that we need to because we never have the time— time that isn't unpaid—to finish stuff that we need to,” teacher Eden Withers said. “That helps your mental health because then you're not stressed about it.”

Godfrey hoped the day helped employees renew, recharge and refocus.

“I also hope that it's just the beginning of a continued focus on individual health and wellness going forward,” he said.

To further help their employees through this rough time, JSD implemented a substitute teacher incentive bonus, which

helped increase availability. When the shortages affected bus drivers, JSD’s director of transportation, administrative staff and mechanics took on bus routes to help drivers, who were covering multiple routes. Board of Education member Darrell Robinson pledged to take every Friday off of work to help with custodial duties at local schools.

“It's really impressive to me, but not surprising, how employees reach out to support each other, to chip in, to work to do whatever they can to support each other personally and professionally,” Godfrey said. l

From classroom to city council, Sheldon Stewart reflects on changes in Riverton’s government

did have to learn early on that no matter what decision I make, I’m going to offend somebody.”

Approaching his 11th year on the Riverton City Council, Councilman Sheldon Stewart is the most senior member on the council. Stewart is as native to Riverton as it gets. “My second-grade class was where we have our council meetings now.”

From growing up in Riverton and serving over a decade on the city council, Stewart has a unique perspective on city politics. He has witnessed firsthand the changes brought in with Trent Staggs being elected as mayor. Since the former city councilman was elected, Stewart has seen some changes that benefit the city in large ways. Stewart says, “We increased our level of communication, we were more open in the way that we communicated things, we built a mission and a vision…and we focused on [them].”

Staggs and Stewart were not always on the same page, however. “We had a lot of conflict…in the beginning.” Before serving as mayor, Staggs served on the city council along side Stewart

where there were often disagreements.

Eventually there came a point where Stewart said, “Let’s put things aside... and grab lunch.” In doing so, he says, “We figured out that we’re 95% together on most things.”

Since then, progress in Riverton City government has gone through the roof leading to new parks, public works projects and new infrastructure. A recent survey conducted by the Riverton City Communications Department showed that over 93% of residents participating in the survey report being satisfied with the quality of life in Riverton City.

It would appear there is a lot to learn for government leaders in Utah from what Stewart has learned working on the city council. When talking about overcoming differences he said, “It seems… that sometimes in government we don’t recognize the reason for that difference.”

The councilman doesn’t claim to always agree with his fellow councilmembers or the mayor. “We do have disagreements…but we know that we are doing the right thing for the community either way,” he said. Furthermore, he says

that it requires what he calls, “strategic alignment” to overcome differences for the betterment of the community.

Stewart has worked hard to cultivate at least three ways for his constituents to communicate their opinions on specific topics to give him better direction during council meetings.

2022 Riverton Hope Walk highlights suicide prevention

tudents, teachers and community members of Riverton High School participated in the Hope Walk on Saturday, Feb. 5, calling attention to the importance of suicide prevention, especially among youth.

The event was planned in part by the Hope Squad, a team of students and faculty who have been trained in recognizing signs of suicide in individuals and how to respond.

Natalie Bartholomew, the Hope Squad Adviser, says that the Hope Walk, which is part of Hope Week, was inspired after a cluster of suicides occurred a few years after Riverton was established in 1999.

“This is something that a lot of us have noticed that there is this alarming trend, an increase in anxiety and depression, just mental health generally. If you notice people are struggling, reach a hand out and let them tell you their story, then you’ve created a connection with that person,” Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs said.

According to Bartholomew, previous Riverton City Councilor Jerry Payne discussed various programs that could be implemented to emphasize suicide prevention.

The Hope4Utah program was integrated with the high school’s curriculum.

“We have a group of 50 kids who are trained on mental health topics and QPR which is question, persuade and refer which is a suicide prevention strategy in looking for warning signs and how to get those people

help,” Bartholomew said. “We train them, and we make students aware of who they can get help from and who they can talk to.”

According to Hope4Utah.com, suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth ages 10-19. About 4,600 teens are lost to suicide annually. “We see it a lot, as a counselor at the high school, mental health is the number one thing we see kids struggling with right now,” Bartholomew said.

“Hope Squads are the eyes and ears of your school. They are comprised of students who are trained to watch for at-risk students– provide friendship, identify warning signs, and seek help from adults. HOPE4UTAH works with school advisors to train students who have been identified by their classmates as trustworthy peers to serve as Hope Squad members. Through evidence-based training modules, Hope Squad members are empowered to seek help and save a life,” the website says. The training is done in tandem with parents so both teens and parents are aware of suicide warning signs.

The Hope Squad is a nonconfrontational means of having students who struggle with suicide ideation reach out to a peer rather than an adult with whom they might not feel comfortable discussing such topics. Dylan Elliott, a senior at Riverton High School, is the Hope Squad president. He was introduced to the Hope Squad in middle school, joined the team in high school and

has since been involved in planning events for the cause in the community.

“I feel like everyone has been affected or can relate someway to suicide prevention,” Elliott said. “So, I thought this program was so cool because it not only focuses on the deep stuff, but also the happy stuff, the idea of hope. And we want to give hope to my peers.” Last year’s Hope Walk was different because of COVID, but this year is “very empowering,” Elliott said.

Elliott shared that the Hope Squad’s QPR training helped him to recognize suicide warning signs in a friend. He called 911 to prevent the attempt.

“I was very grateful for the training I got from Hope Squad to be able to recognize the signs,” he said. “I think there is a level, while I’m participating in meetings and events, that this kind of training can really make a change.”

The United Health Foundation maintains suicide statistics on AmericasHealthRankings.org which lists Utah as the state with the fifth highest suicide rates.

According to their data, 21 people in every 100,000 have committed suicide in the last year. The highest demographic being Caucasian males aged 35-41.

Natalie Hall, the newly elected mayor

of Bluffdale, said that the Hope Walk was an impactful experience for her and her kids.

Even though the city lines are different, Hall says Bluffdale and Riverton are the same community.

“I think it’s really important for people to realize that our kids go to Riverton,” Hall said. “We really want to support Hope Week year-round. We want to make sure our students know they are loved and that they can share their stories. Mayor Staggs has been very gracious in including Bluffdale in events this week.”

Hall said these events will continue to play an important role in addressing the mental health needs of the community.

Hope Squad Public Relations representative Jacqueline Willard, a senior at Riverton High School, has been using social media to spread the word about Hope Squad and Hope Week. “I’ve been able to communicate with students and staff through multiple ways, in assemblies and in classes, by showing videos to talk about Hope Week and how we can help students,” she said. “It’s important for them to reach out to us and we can work with counselors [to address their needs],” Willard added. l

The Silverwolves tied for the region championship with Jordan as both teams posted a 12-3 region record, only losing the tiebreaker on head-to-head. This season will see Riverton face a slightly altered region with Jordan and West no longer a part of Region 3 and nearby Mountain Ridge and West Jordan replacing them.

Cooper Hansen was one of multiple underclassmen who contributed to Riverton’s 20-9 season a year ago, going 5-2 from the mound as a freshman. The Silverwolves bowed out in the quarterfinals in 2021. As the No. 5 seed, Riverton swept Taylorsville in the super regional before going 1-2 with a win over Layton before falling in two close games to eventual state champion American Fork (4-3) and Bingham (12-10).

High school students learn engineering offers variety, creativity, advancements

illcrest High junior Amber Parker wanted to get a glimpse into potential future careers in engineering, specifically aerospace engineering, so she was excited to attend high school engineering career day.

“I learned how engineers got into their positions and specifically what local companies are doing in the engineering field,” she said.

“It’s pretty interesting.”

Parker attended sessions presented by Boeing, VPI Engineering and the University of Utah. Other presenters came from Ottobock, Rocky Mountain Power, Horrocks Engineering, Hunt, Reaveley Engineering, Comfort Systems USA and Salt Lake Community College, which hosted the half-day conference for mostly high school juniors and seniors from the Salt Lake and Tooele valleys.

Canyons School District Career and Technical Education District Coordinator Patti Larkin said that the focus of the fair was to provide about 250 students with possible career opportunities within the engineering field.

“They’re getting to meet all different types of engineers, make those connections, and understand their specific pathways,” she said. “We hope students can see what is needed, so they have the opportunity to get an internship or a job shadow and set their path of study toward their career.”

Taylorsville sophomore Danna De Leon said she learned a range of engineering.

In Ottobock, she learned about the different prosthetics made with 3D printers ranging from snowboarders’ knees to swimmers’ ankles.

“They test different varieties, adding weights, forces or whatever is needed to make improvements,” she said. “In the Boeing session, I learned some of the ways they designed commercial airplanes.”

Granger High and Granite Technical Institute senior Hayden Young, who wants to become a biomedical engineer, also attended the Ottobock session.

“I’ve learned composites are a very big part of it,” he said. “With engineering, designs may start on paper then move to CAD (computer-aided drafting). Designs can be improved for better comfort, better manufacturing time, better about anything, to help solve or improve what is needed.”

Murray High Work-Based Learning Coordinator Brady Smith said the 15 students who came from his school appreciated being able to interact with industry professionals.

“Our goal is to connect the students we work with to the career paths they can continue down once their time is completed here at Murray High School and this is a great opportunity for that to happen,” he said, adding that some students appreciated learning about the Luke Skywalker Arm that is being worked on at the U of U to the engineering careers at Rocky Mountain Power.

that she appreciated the robotics session she attended.

“They could make it walk, dance, and do all sorts of cool things through coding,” she said.

She was with freshman Audrey Fleckenstein who said that through Reaveley Engineering, she learned how engineers perform a series of tests on structures.

“They were designing buildings and tested them and reviewed to ensure their designs would withstand earthquakes,” she said. “It isn’t just a one-time test, but over and over again.”

Brighton sophomore Stephanie Guzman De La Haz said she learned about heating and cooling and the laws of thermodynamics in the Comfort Systems session.

“I hadn’t heard of it before; it was actually really interesting,” she said.

Olympus senior Ben Walston said he’s considering a career in mechanical engineer and through the conference, he learned more about what was available through his sessions with VPI and Ottobock.

“It’s amazing and just fun to see how they can make something that is needed through their eyes and creativity,” he said.

was eight when I ran away from home. It was the summer of ’76 and my mother did the unspeakable. She banned a book in our home.

In the stack of books I’d checked out at the library, there was a paperback copy of “Jaws” I instinctually hid from Mom because she could be irrational. The book cover, with its looming shark and nearly-nude swimmer, might make her think the novel wasn’t “proper” for an 8-year-old.

With a plateful of homemade oatmeal cookies, I sat on my bed engrossed in shark attacks. My bedroom door opened and Mom (without knocking!) entered my room to put clothes away. Her mouth dropped open when she saw what I was reading. She grabbed it out of my hands and banned the book from the house.

How dare she!

I fumed and realized there was only one answer to such blatant oppression. I got my red suitcase and packed a nightgown, a change of clothes, my toothbrush and a Nancy Drew book. I stomped down the stairs, ignoring Mom as she stood in the kitchen doorway with her arms crossed.

Before I walked out of the house forever, I told her I couldn’t live with her cruelty any longer. I walked two blocks to my Aunt Judy’s house and announced I was moving in because Mom was an unreasonable tyrant.

I stayed the night, knowing Mom must regret her terrible behavior. I figured by the next day, she would be frantic with worry.

My effort to read banned books didn’t stop there. As I got older, I tore through Judy Blume's books, inhaled the “Flowers in the Attic” series, and absorbed “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Twice. My cousin and I would sit on the bookstore floor, reading salacious parts of popular bodice-ripper novels written by the queen of romance, Kathleen Woodiwiss.

I make it a point to read banned books, buy banned books, promote banned books and encourage my daughters to do the same.

I figure if a book is so powerful it has to be banned or burned, that’s a book I need to read.

Anything that gets people’s knickers twisted and touches a literary nerve goes on my toread list.

Parents and lawmakers are increasingly trying to create laws that shelve books that don’t fit in with their (mostly conservative) ideals. When that happens, society loses. Didn’t you read the (ironically) banned “Fahrenheit 451?”

I agree that 8-year-olds don’t make the best choices, but if we control the curriculum, frame the narrative, and put a conservative slant on history, we’re not doing those 8-yearolds any favors.

In January, when a school board in Tennessee banned the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel, “Maus,” parents pushed back.

The Salt Lake County Library System has dozens of copies of the Holocaust story where the Jews are depicted as mice, Germans as cats, and Americans as dogs.

I was happy to see it has hundreds of hold requests.
