S

cience teacher Todd Monson, who has spent 30 years inspiring and molding students at Oquirrh Hills Middle School, is retiring.

“He is the kind of teacher that everybody wants in their building and the kind of teacher that people want their kids to have,” Principal Donna Hunter said. “He is energetic, cheerful, supportive, professional, and he loves the kids.”

Monson is the kind of teacher that spends the night on the roof of Peterson’s Fresh Market, every year, for 28 years, to draw attention to Oquirrhfest, OHMS’s annual fundraising drive.

Brandon Peterson, store manager at Peterson’s, is a former student of Monson’s. He said Monson is still the enthusiastic and positive teacher he remembers from his youth.

“It doesn’t matter how bad the weather is, his attitude is always super positive and he’s excited to do that and get the students excited and motivated about what they’re doing,” Peterson said. “He’s a great example of the best that the education system has in the way that he relates to students and is an example to students of doing hard things or doing things that might be seen as uncomfortable.”

Uncomfortable, like sleeping on a roof, braving cold, snow, wind, sleet, hail and tent damage to support his students.

Peterson said because Monson has taught three generations of students at one school and in one community, he’s been able to have an impact on the Riverton community.

Riverton softball rides strong bond to overwhelming success

I

t’s been quite the season for the Riverton High School softball team.

The Silverwolves finished the regular season 17-1 with a perfect record in Region 3 play and finished the regular season with a No. 1 ranking in 6A. Furthermore, Riverton has outscored opponents 229-30, averaging wins by about 12 runs, with 10 shutouts.

The last time Riverton was this good was in 2016 when the team won the state title with a 24-5 record, including the postseason.

Head coach Katelyn Elliott said the roster is solid from top to bottom with the underclassmen pushing the upperclassmen while still bonding. That bond, she said, has led to not just success but dominance.

“They have a mentality of there’s never enough runs and they’re going to attack every single pitch,” she said. “That’s something that we’ve talked about and they do a great job of that.”

The Silverwolves feature four seniors with a lot of players who are juniors on down making big impacts. This includes solid hitting and fielding with senior Chloe Borges and junior Kaysen Korth excelling in the pitching circle.

Borges said she couldn’t pinpoint one area she believes is Riverton’s biggest strength but a good relationship among teammates does help.

“We’ve got a really strong bond as the younger girls and the older girls connect re-

ally well,” she said. “That’s normally not a thing. We don’t argue, like at all. We definitely have fun and that’s a big part of it.”

Elliott is wrapping up her seventh season as Riverton head softball coach. She said she’s tried to craft a family atmosphere where players want to work hard together and look forward to being around each other.

That mindset has stuck this season for seniors Bella Peacock and Sheila Pardee.

Peacock said her favorite part of the season was meeting the freshmen and helping them integrate into the team.

Pardee said she’s felt a sisterhood with the team because she trusts her teammates in any respect. That trust has helped shape Pardee’s leadership.

“It’s just awesome to know that we’re leaving behind a legacy of really strong players and I just want to represent the program in a way that they’ll want to represent it in the same way coming into the next years,” Pardee said.

Senior Bailey Hansen had surgery five games into the season, forcing her to watch the rest of the year from the dugout. She said she’s impressed with the energy the team has each game.

As for how the chemistry and energy comes about, Hansen said it all appears natural since the incoming freshmen all click easily.

While Hansen hasn’t played much this season, she still said her favorite part was being around her teammates because of how much she connects to her teammates.

“You feel the energy,” she said. “When you’re not on the field, you feel the energy.”

While it’s been a great run for the student-athletes, Elliott has had fun coaching them. She said this is mainly because of how coachable they are and how fun it is to coach them.

Family ties: Davenport cousins leave mark on Riverton girls lacrosse

R

iverton High School lacrosse and the last name Davenport have recently become synonymous.

This season, the Riverton girls lacrosse team features three Davenports: Sarah and Megan, senior cousins, and Kaitlyn, the freshman younger sister of Megan. Both Sarah and Megan serve as the team’s captains.

Leading the team has gone well for Sarah and Megan. Riverton head coach Jocelyn Dorton said the two have a closeness that reaches the other players and boosts chemistry. Dorton also said she thinks they are stronger together in their leadership.

“They both complete the other half of a really successful leader,” she said. “So together they make really good captains. They get the team really hyped.”

Lacrosse runs deep in the Davenport family. Along with Megan and Kaitlyn, Ashley Woolley, the oldest sister, played for the Silverwolves until graduating in 2019. Furthermore, Megan’s father played lacrosse at BYU. Sarah said she’s played with multiple cousins while at Riverton and has enjoyed the experience.

“They all have different talents and they’re all good at separate things but they work so well together,” Sarah said. “It’s like a whole Davenport thing.”

Sarah and Megan attended school together since kindergarten but it wasn’t until seventh grade they began playing lacrosse together.

Megan started playing in fifth grade after her dad took her to a game and recommended she and her sisters try the sport. While initially hesitant, Megan started to play.

Megan’s father was coaching her lacrosse team when Sarah joined. Megan said she was excited to play with her cousin.

“I was comfortable with my dad but when Sarah came, I was like ‘oh, this is kind of cool,’ because we had family reunions and would see each other on the weekends and go to school but I had never been with her doing an extracurricular activity.”

While initially there was a discrepancy in the two’s playing abilities, Megan said Sarah caught on pretty quickly.

“It was cool to watch her growth because now, we’re neck and neck,” Megan said. “It was fun to grow up with her because we got to see each grow up while we were doing it.”

From Sarah’s perspective, maturing in lacrosse was much easier because she had someone she could relate to away from the field.

With both Sarah and Megan growing as lacrosse players and into captains, both said reaching this height has offered some great opportunities to reflect on the journey.

“It’s really rewarding because we’ve gone so long playing together that for both of us to work together to be captains and we have different strengths,” Sarah said. “It’s all gone so smoothly because of that, because of our separate strengths.”

while Sarah is an attacker.

Megan said there are numerous opportunities for the two to connect while on the field such as Megan forcing a turnover and passing the ball up to her cousin on her way to scoring.

In other instances, it can help feed into the friendly competition the two have between each other. Megan said practices can get intense when they go against each other with Dorton commenting on the higher friendly intensity between the two.

Megan recalled a time when there was a loose ball and both Davenports were racing for it. Megan said Sarah was trying to outrace her and got to the concrete first but ended up slipping and slightly hurting her a leg with previous injuries.

Despite that competitive drive between the cousins, Megan said those differences play to their favor, especially when it comes to leading.

“It’s good because we both take our different personalities and work together to create a super awesome team and environment,” Megan said. “It’s super fun because I get to see her be a leader and I’ve seen her be a leader in our family so it’s pretty cool.”

The future is still unclear for the two Davenports but both Sarah and Megan are considering attending Utah State University and playing for their club team alongside Woolley.

Though the future is uncertain, their past isn’t. Dorton said both young women have left a big impact on the team that will help the underclassmen as they continue to mature.

“They both are really classy players,” Dorton said. “They both have respect for other teams and other coaches and they don’t back talk.

“So I think as leaders, they’ve really done a good job at showing these younger girls what a successful lacrosse team is.” l

Continued from front page Monson has received several awards and recognitions for teaching, his support of STEM learning, and his community involvement.

At OHMS, Monson taught science in the ALPS gifted and talented program. He started the Science Olympiad program and the first—and only—middle school FIRST Tech Challenge robotics program in Jordan District.

“My goal has been to inspire students to develop an interest in science with enjoyable creative experiments and demonstrations that have been an opportunity for students to develop a common interest, curiosity, fascination and amazement in eighth grade science,” Monson said. “The students that have come through my classroom have inspired me to be a better teacher each year. The students are the people that I work for.”

This past year, Monson served as a mentor teacher, a role he’s had informally for 30 years. As Monson’s colleague of 11 years, Cindy Van Pelt has been inspired by how invested he is in his students and colleagues.

“Everyone in our faculty knows Todd is the heart of the culture that our colleagues are our family and will be there to support us and help us through whatever may come our way,” she said. “Todd Monson is irreplaceable and he will be sorely missed when he retires. It’s not possible to calculate or put into the words the difference he has made in the lives of his students, his colleagues, and the community he has served.”

Hunter said Monson is “the friendliest person in the world” who loves to talk with people and make connections wherever he goes. Monson loves to teach and said the key is that when you enjoy what you are teaching, your students will enjoy learning.

His curiosity and his passion for science and his interests—such as coin-collecting and metal-detecting—have provided enriching learning activities for his students. Even the COVID restrictions this school year didn’t disrupt his engaging style of instruction.

“I just wanted to go out with the same enthusiasm as I came in, and I feel like I am,” Monson said. “I still have the energy.

I still have the enthusiasm. I still love the kids. I still love the people I teach with. I’ll always have that passion and that support for the students and the staff-- that’s what I love to do-- and that’s going to be a hard thing to not be actively involved in that as much.”

His wife, Dawn, said her husband’s focus has always been his students.

“Just having that relationship with them and watching them grow and discover—that piece is going to be the hardest part for him to walk away from,” she said.

When he retires, Monson will focus on his other passions—his wife, his two sons and his 5 3/4 grandkids, being outdoors and fishing and camping, looking for treasures exposed by historic home renovations, and exploring ghost towns.

“My 30 years have been a thrill and a joy and it’s bittersweet to be leaving, but I know that I’m going out at the top of my game as opposed to the bottom of my game,” Monson said. “The 30 years have been filled with memories that will last the rest of my life. It has been an honor and privilege to teach science here at OHMS.” A retirement party will be held for Todd Monson at OHMS on May 20, 4-6 pm. l

A first-place finish on the girls’ side (with 199 points) and a second-place finish for the boys (155 points) powered Bingham High School to the overall region championship, with a total score of 354 points.

ne of Riverton High senior Abeiku Snow’s favorite things to do is to play soccer with his teammate Cooper Hodgson.

The two, who went through elementary and middle school together, put on the Silverwolves jerseys at the co-ed Salt Lake area regional tournament — the first time they have participated in unified sports.

“I was excited,” Snow said. “I want to help my team out. I’m happy when I’m running the field.”

The student-athlete who moved from Ghana 10 years ago, frequently played soccer at the orphanage before he moved to Utah.

“He plays a lot; there’s always a soccer game in our yard,” his mother, Aimee said.

Snow’s next favorite thing is to “cheer for other people. It’s the nice thing to do.”

Hodgson, who is a junior and was excited that he scored a goal early in the day, also played goalkeeper.

“It’s my first time playing soccer for the school,” he said. “It’s good. Every time I play, I look up and get excited to see my family here.”

Hodgson had 12 family members in the stands, who, along with many other Riverton families were there supporting their team.

The Riverton team was coached by Alexis Brown, who also was thrilled to see her team had the most fans at the tournament.

“We had parents on board, lots of grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings and everyone came out with signs and posters – it was so great,” she said.

Brown, who had a brother participate in unified sports and who herself became a partner when she was in high school, wanted to allow her athletes the chance to participate in the program.

“We haven’t had it in recent years, so this is the first opportunity these students are having to participate,” she said. “I want them to have this experience, to be a part of this pro-

gram and experience this part of high school.”

With nine student-athletes, and partners to help them on the field, she held three practices before the tournament. While some were familiar with the sport, Brown, who herself played competitively up until high school, had to teach the basics to others.

“We had some who tried to stop the ball with their hands and others who just kicked the ball hard, so we had to learn ‘no hands’ and how to dribble,” she said. “But the biggest goal I had was to let them have fun and to build a community. They worked together and built school spirit. They’re happy to be a Riverton Silverwolf. They cheered for each other – some of them were screaming for their teammates who I’ve never heard before. They’re definitely closer, talking more in the hallways and those at school who didn’t play are now wishing they did.”

That is something that Courtnie Worthen, Unified Champion Schools manager who oversees the unified sports program, appreciates.

“We hope this helps to create lasting friendships, where they see each other in the hallways and say hi, eat together at lunch and have fun,” she said. “This helps to build camaraderie. I’d love to host unified dances or see clubs that help build leadership with the students and their peers.”

While those on the field had to follow the safety and health precautions as other high school teams, the tournament was set up regionally to reduce travel and have less teams playing at a site to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19, Worthen said.

Before the end of the school year, the Silverwolves were to have another opportunity to shine at the unified track and field meet slated for mid-May. Next year, unified soccer in Utah will become a fall sport, allowing year-round unified sports, with basketball in the winter and track in the spring. l

Highlights & Insights: Mayor’s Proposed Budget

By Mayor Trent Staggs Despite considerable challenges and headwinds due to the global pandemic, unfunded state requirements for secondary water metering, and commissioned rate studies that recommended substantial rate increases for culinary and secondary water, I am happy to report that our community has demonstrated an incredible resiliency and your government leaders have found innovative ways to restructure the budget to continue to keep costs low for residents.

Here are a few highlights from my proposed budget: • Total budgeted expenditures are $51 million, compared to last year’s $59 million.

• I am proposing that all stormwater operational costs be rolled into the General Fund, lowering the stormwater fee for residents to about $1, and using the projected $5 per month savings to shore up our water and sanitation funds for years to come.

• Sales tax revenues have grown by 56% since 2016, approaching almost $9.2 million.

• Through reorganization efforts and planned retirements, the city’s full-time employee count has dropped to 160, saving about $1 million from last year, which is the lowest number of employees per thousand residents compared to any city in the region.

• Riverton City will receive approximately $5 million from the federal government’s America Rescue Plan. Given the legislation considers investments in water, sewer, and broadband infrastructure as allowable uses, I’ve proposed $1.2 million be used this year to secure a city owned fiber backbone infrastructure. This will save the city money, improve connectivity to city assets, and set up the possibility of providing an open access network to all residents and businesses that can improve costs and availability.

• Roadway infrastructure continues to be a top priority, with $900,000 budgeted for asphalt maintenance. In addition, Riverton City will receive $700,000 annually for 15 years for roadway improvements due to the passage of HB244.

• This budget includes almost $400,000 to improve existing playgrounds, parking lots, trails and our community center. In addition, increased developerpaid park impact fees will support the addition of four new pickleball courts and one tennis court at Riverton City Park,

as well as lighting and field improvements at the CR Hamilton Sports Complex.

• During the 2021 legislative session, legislators passed SB199 which requires that cities must meter all secondary water connections, and, by January 2022, “…establish a meter installation reserve for metering installation and replacement projects.”

I am proposing a $2.50 charge to each residential connection to help fulfill this unfunded mandate.

• I am proposing paying off approximately $4 million in water bonds and eliminating $12 million in future debt liability, using newly available resources potentially to pay for the balance of the secondary water meter project. Let’s not have Riverton residents carrying the entire burden of this state mandated project.

• Total monthly utility fees for culinary water, secondary water, sanitation and stormwater are $63 for the average household, which is still the lowest in the region, and less than what most pay for internet service!

• The move to our own police department and taxing district continues to show huge property tax savings, approaching $180 per year for the average homeowner.

Through smart planning efforts, our city has proven to weather the past year’s unforeseen challenges. We continue to deliver best-in-class services and keep fees low for our residents.

I am grateful for the dedicated work of our City Council. Their demonstrated vision and passion for the city has clearly made an impact. The significant contributions of our employees should also be recognized am grateful for their support and dedication in serving our great residents. I am also grateful for you, our residents, which continue to exemplify and set the standard of what it means to be part of a great community.

By Councilmember Tish Buroker When I was a young mother, one of our family’s cherished traditions was placing our chairs on the sidewalk along Redwood Road in anticipation of the annual Riverton Parade. This was in 1980 when the population of Riverton was 7,000 residents and Redwood Road was a twolane highway. Now it is 2021 and Redwood Road is a seven-lane highway, and there are over 44,000 residents in Riverton. Most of that growth has occurred on the west side of Riverton.

How do we maintain tradition and yet recognize and accommodate changes that occur due to growth and the needs and desires of our citizens? We must recognize, change and adapt. Two years ago, the Council made the decision that the long-standing tradition of the parade on Redwood Road would remain. Unfortunately, the new seven-lane highway was not very conducive to supporting Riverton’s tradition of candy throwing, and the parade route was confusing to residents and parade entries. In contrast, in 2018 the parade traveled down 2700 W and 13400 S due to

For these reasons, the parade’s new tradition will be similar. Please watch for the annual Riverton Town Days booklet in your mailbox as well as on social media for the exact parade route. In addition, traditional events such as the rodeo, the car show, flag raising, breakfast, children’s activities, fireworks and more will continue.

Do not forget about the free summer events: Friday Fun Nights will be every Friday from July 16 - August 27.

These include food trucks, a summer market and movie in the park.

And finally, my personal favorite, the Sunday Concert in the Park series on August 1,8,15 and 22 at 6 p.m. at Riverton City Park, a new tradition of three years.

I also encourage residents throughout the city to implement small neighborhood gatherings during the summer to allow neighbors to get to know each other and interact in an informal setting. This is one of the best ways to keep the Riverton small town feel that so many of us “old timers” enjoy and treasure.

By Chief Don Hutson There is a feeling of renewal and excitement as the weather warms and the pandemic loses its momentum, and we look forward to resuming more normal activities after limiting our interactions these past months. Unfortunately, there are many in our community who are having a tougher time “bouncing back.” Life seems to keep beating them up and making it difficult for them to reach their potential.

Depression, substance abuse, domestic conflict, and other relationship-destroying behaviors have become all too common. It seems the pandemic exacerbated these issues with some in our community.

Members of the Riverton Police Department are often exposed to our citizens at their most vulnerable times. We understand the importance of intervening to maintain public peace and protect everyone involved, including those who may be violating the law.

When we encounter citizens in crisis, we have an obligation to act

to resolve the situation.

That intervention can take many different forms and may include an arrest, diversion to a recognized program, or referral to one of our many partner entities that provide relevant services.

We work very hard to ensure our officers receive appropriate training and are equipped with the tools to handle a variety of situations. As part of this ongoing effort, we have provided all our officers with a hardship relief resources card to be distributed to those who may benefit from the information. The card is a small reference guide containing contact information for many of the organizations which can provide critical services to members of our community who are struggling. These organizations include Volunteers of America, YWCA/Family Justice Center, Valley Behavioral Health, and many more.

Mountain Ridge girls lacrosse finishes undefeated in region play

T

o say Mountain Ridge’s girls lacrosse team had a remarkable first season would be an understatement.

The Sentinels finished with a perfect 12-0 region record (15-1 overall), had eight out of 10 starters named first team All-Region and were ranked the second best overall team in the whole state.

Head coach Angie Maughan knew her team had that kind of potential, but she thought maybe it would take a year or two to come together.

“They are a very young, talented team,” she told the Herriman Journal following a 14-2 senior night victory over Timpanogos. “I expected us to be contenders in the future. But they blew me away from the very first game.”

The team started the season out with a bang, winning their first five games by a combined score of 94-10. The lone blemish on the season: a 15-13 loss to crosstown rival Herriman.

Two of the teams’ strengths are its relentlessness and teamwork.

“They come out with all their heart. They stay intense from start to finish,” Maughan said. “They don’t depend on just one player, they work together as a team both on attack, midfield and defense. They’re a unit.”

Their teamwork and willingness to share the ball around is evidenced by the fact that the Sentinels have 11 players with 10 or more goals this season.

While they don’t depend on just one player, they do have several standouts.

One of those is senior Kylie Mortenson, a team captain who Maugahn said has a talent for getting those around her to work harder.

Stats-wise, she leads the team in assists (29) and is second in goals (36). She also takes the team’s draws, which she wins at a high percentage (.659).

The only other senior on the team, Jo Miles, is the team’s goalie.

“Jo has worked her butt off this summer,” Maughan said. “The goalie she has become from last summer to now, is huge. She’s getting comfortable coming out of the goal, forcing turnovers and getting those ground balls.”

The Sentinels were ranked as the second best overall team in the state by the RPI system, earning them the No. 2 seed in the Division A bracket.

best teams are placed into a separate bracket.

So the girls Division A includes teams from smaller schools like Bear River (4A) and Waterford (2A). In fact, Mountain Ridge’s first game of the tournament pitted them against Ridgeline, a 4A school from Cache Valley, where the Sentinels trounced the Logan school 18-5.

Mountain Ridge boys lacrosse athletes earn all-region honors

A

ll-region teams are out and several Mountain Ridge High School boys lacrosse players made the cut, adding to an already solid 2021 campaign.

Mountain Ridge headlines the all-Region 7 team with senior Gage Gann earning Region 7 Most Valuable Player award while six sentinels earned first-team honors and four made second-team recognitions.

Mountain Ridge (15-2, 12-0 Region 7) competes in 5A’s Region 7, which includes Alta, Lehi, Mountain View, Orem, Timpanogos and Timpview high schools.

Mountain Ridge head coach Trent Bangert said he was proud of his players who made the cut of the all-region team because of their hard work and their character.

“All of these players, not only are they athletically gifted but they take up and take a leadership role,” he said. “All of them in their respective positions bring everybody around them and they make each other better.”

Gann led the Sentinels as captain and as the team’s goalkeeper. He allowed 98 goals while stopping 120 shots on goal of 218 attempts.

“He’s a true leader, a second-year cap-

tain,” Bangert said. “He definitely gets everybody involved. He controls the defense as well as on the field, he alone has kept us in games with his shot-blocking abilities.”

Gann said he was happy to earn the award and it felt nice earning recognition for his play.

“Playing goalie though, it’s all about my teammates being able to force shots that are easy to save,” he said.

Joining Gann on the all-region first team was junior attacker David Wright, senior attacker Liam Christensen, senior midfielder Jack Crawford, junior defender Jacob Walsh and senior long stick midfielder Dallin Tanner.

Wright led the team in goals (58) and assists (31) this regular season with Christensen following closely with 32 goals and 28 assists. Crawford was a key contributor with 42 goals and 15 assists.

Tanner helped Mountain Ridge maintain ball control with 62 ground balls.

Walsh was part of a defense that allowed a little more than six goals per game.

Second team included junior attacker Colby Roberts, sophomore midfielder Gavin Gann, senior defender Cameron Brundage and senior midfielder Dylan Ballard.

Gavin Gann added offensively with 26 goals this regular season while Roberts chipped in 21. Roberts was a big part of scoring, assisting on 25 goals while Gavin Gann had 18 assists.

While Ballard did contribute a bit offensively, he made his presence felt in faceoffs and ground balls. Ballard won 194 of 301 faceoffs while scooping up a teamhigh 126 ground balls. Brundage’s efforts were primarily defensive but he did collect 49 ground balls.

While Bangert said he is thrilled for

these players, he also sees the benefits of their success on future Mountain Ridge teams.

“As we move forward and build the program, the recognition that this team has received and is continuing to receive I think brings light into what we are building and the successes we’ve had that the younger generation coming up can recognize that Mountain Ridge is definitely a great lacrosse program to be a part of,” he said. l

Summit Academy High School outstanding graduate: It’s payback time

M

atthew Delis has spent his senior year at Summit Academy High School giving payback.

As a youth, Delis learned golfing skills that helped him, as team captain, lead the Summit Academy High School boy’s varsity golf team to the state championship this year.

To pay it back, he has been volunteering this year as a youth instructor in the very same golf program he participated in as a kid.

“I felt it was important to try to give something back to those people that had helped me so much throughout my childhood,” he said. “They really helped me develop my game and my mental approach to the sport that has bled into a lot of other aspects of my life.”

Delis also wanted to pay it back to Utah’s regional qualifying spelling bee program, sponsored by the City Journals, which supported him through five hard years of competition and paid for his trip to Washington D.C. when he qualified for the Scripps National Spelling Bee as an eighth grader.

“It had been my dream for the longest time and it was an amazing experience,” he said. “After my journey was over, I felt it was really important to give back to the community that had supported me so much through that entire journey. I wanted to help raise awareness for the importance of spelling and provide potential competitors with the same opportunities that I was able to receive.”

For the past four years, Delis has contacted local businesses for donations to support the spelling bee. City Journals Creative Director Bryan Scott said they’ve never had a past participant who has been such a support to the program.

“He’s a super great kid and he’s been just awesome for the spelling bee,” Scott said.

At SAHS, AP psychology teacher Marcus Dickson appreciates that Delis is a meticulous, respectful student.

“He’s one that goes really above and beyond the learning,” he said.

Delis has loved the tight knit community of students and teachers at SAHS. To give back to the school, Delis served as student body vice president and a member of National Honor Society.

When the pandemic sent students to learn from home last spring, Delis maintained his 4.0 GPA but also looked for ways to help others with his free time.

“Listening to the news every day and hearing all the bad things that were happening, I just felt it was important to try to do something while I was stuck at home,” he said. Delis contacted other NHS members and organized a toy drive for the Ronald McDonald House. Throughout the summer and the first half of the school year, they collect-

ed more than 300 toys.

“I hope it brought a sense of normalcy and a degree of happiness to those children,” he said. “It really just serves as additional motivation to help us keep providing better things for the world, so that we might leave it a little better than we found it.”

Delis works as a volunteer at the Loveland Aquarium and is passionate about the environment. He will be attending UCLA in the fall.

“I want to major in mechanical engineering and hopefully put an environmentally helpful spin on that so that I might be able to build something to help the world,” he said.

He already has a head start on helping the environment. Delis has excelled in school science fairs every year since grade school, advancing to place either first or second at the state fair every year. Most of his projects have been focused on environmental impacts, such as BPA in plastic water bottles and soil erosion in fragile ecosystems. l

Utah Employment Exceeds Pre-Pandemic Levels

ne year after the economic recession caused by the coronavirus pandemic began, Utah’s economy has emerged as one of the strongest in the nation. Utah’s unemployment rate in April was 2.8%, down from 2.9% in March and nearly as low as it was before the pandemic.

Utah is now tied with South Dakota and Nebraska for the lowest unemployment in the nation.

Utah also has the second-highest job growth in the nation, ticking up 2.5% in the last 24 months. This is just behind Idaho’s job growth of 3.9% in the same time period. In fact, Utah and Idaho are the only two states that have added jobs in the last two years. Utah added 35,600 jobs over the past two years, with professional and business services (+15,700) leading the growth. Other sectors that saw notable gains were construction (+11,900); trade, transportation and utilities (+9,800); financial activities (+8,800); and manufacturing (+6,900).

However, the government (-10,500); leisure and hospitality (-7,600); and natural resources (-1,400) sectors have all lost jobs in the past 24 months.

While the strong job market and low unemployment are very positive for Utah, our state is once again struggling with a labor shortage. Simply put, there are not enough people in the Utah labor force to meet demand for workers. If this continues for too long, it could constrain potential economic growth, especially for smaller companies that must compete with larger employers for these workers.

Mountain Ridge boys soccer leaves mark in first full season

I

t hasn’t taken long for Mountain Ridge High School to make its mark on the boys soccer scene.

The Sentinels finished their first full regular season with a 13-3 record, a 10-2 finish in 5A’s Region 7 and a first-place finish in the region. This all comes on the heels of a 1-2 start to the season.

Mountain Ridge opened for the 201920 school year but the COVID-19 pandemic shortened the boys soccer team’s inaugural season. That only delayed the Sentinels’ arrival, which head coach Eric Arthur said comes from a short amount of time for learning.

“After those first four games, our players, our guys are just really intelligent soccer players and they figured it out,” he said.

“They figured out how to work together, how to move together to find the space that each other are going to.

“They’ve always been a technically-gifted group. It just took a little bit for them to get in sync with their style and now that they have, they’re really a dangerous group of players.”

Mountain Ridge’s first four matches included three overtime contests, one of which included a shootout win over Alta after a scoreless draw. During the rest of the regular season, the Sentinels outscored their opponents 31-8 and found themselves in two overtime matches — a win and a loss — as well as five shutouts.

Arthur said those initial matches helped the Sentinels mature quickly and after having so many overtime matches, the team made a goal to stay out of that situation.

Senior Max Palmer said those four matches also helped the student-athletes learn a bit more about themselves.

“I feel like in the first four games, we were just trying to play an individual game and dribble a ton and just do it all ourselves and all be the star,” he said. “After those games, we really decided the best way to win was as a team.”

Fellow senior Tyler Moon said the original selfish mindset came from a lot of the players used to being the main guy on their club teams. The shift from selfish to selfless came after a realization.

“I think it was just realizing that every player has different strengths and if you can put them in those positions and maybe if they’re better at certain things, then you can give them those situations and they can take care of them for you,” he said.

One benefit Arthur said he sees with having a new school is younger players get a chance to shine.

During last year’s abbreviated season, there were five seniors. This year, there are four. In both seasons, sophomores and freshmen obtained a lot of experience and it’s helping this season.

While Moon was one of Mountain Ridge’s top performers this regular season, there were numerous sophomores who scored goals while sophomore Eli Welch led the team in regular season assists. Defensively, sophomore Ben Maw led the way as goalkeeper.

Arthur said while the learning curve of last season was good for the underclassmen, he’s seen a group of tight-knit players who have helped each other grow.

“They really enjoy playing together and it’s been fun and it’s been exciting as we look to the future, as well, knowing just how young we are,” he said.

Moon described the chemistry as a group of guys who have a lot of energy, have fun and have bonded together on and off the pitch. Palmer said that solid chemistry does manifest itself on the field.

“It gives us the ability to trust each other, definitely, and connect well on the field,” he said. “Like, we know where players want it and we’re able to deliver it. That helps us to finish [offensively] and in defensive organization.”

With the first full season of the Sentinels’ soccer journey in the rearview mirror, Arthur said he hopes this year will serve as a catalyst for years to come.

“We’ve set a bar really high,” he said.

“Because we’re so young and the group is so driven, I know that whatever we accomplish this year, they’re going to want more next year. No one’s going to look back on this year and say that was the best that they had to give.

“It’s awesome.” l

Outstanding Riverton High graduate: Choreographs her life to make a difference

ith a near-perfect grade point average (3.945) while taking 10 advanced placement classes (one of only three seniors to do so), Isabella DeJesus excels in leadership roles, is dedicated to helping others and is passionate about the art of dance. She was selected as Riverton High School’s Dance Sterling Scholar and represented Jordan District at the state level of the competition for outstanding high school seniors where she was named the state runner-up in her division.

“Bella exemplifies the moniker of sterling scholar by being incredibly well-rounded,” RHS sterling scholar adviser Adrian Ramjoue said. “Bella is not focused on being the best in one field, but becoming exemplary in many fields in order to achieve her goals.”

DeJesus has challenged herself academically to prepare to become a doctor.

“Her academic schedule is one of the most difficult I’ve ever seen and she devotes herself to making sure she is the best student possible,” RHS dance company director Brynn Perkins said. “She is resilient and faces challenges with a goal-oriented mindset.”

For the three years she has been in RHS’s Dance Company, DeJesus has exemplified a strong work ethic and a humility to learn from others, making her one of Per-

kins’ most well-rounded dancers.

DeJesus has taken leadership roles within Dance Company seriously. This year, as vice president, she organized wildly successful COVID-safe fundraising activities for Silver Rush, the school’s annual charity drive.

“In all of my years coaching, I have never seen a student take on this much responsibility and succeed,” Perkins said.

“She is the type of person that serves out of true love and charity and not because it looks good on a resume.”

DeJesus has been an active member of National Honor Society and a volunteer academic tutor. She arranged many service activities for Dance Company and coordinated schedules for dancers to teach regular dance therapy classes at Kauri Sue Hamilton School to students with special needs.

“What impresses me most about Bella is her ability to see beyond herself, circumstances and environment, a rare ability for many high schoolers,” Ramjoue said.

Instead of accepting a lavish party and gifts for her quinceanera, DeJesus collected $700 in gift cards from friends and family to benefit Women of the World, a nonprofit organization located in South Salt Lake, which helps forcibly displaced women become functioning and active members in

their communities.

Women of the World Founder and Executive Director Samira Harnish said the gift cards helped 28 women buy basic needs.

“I was very touched by Isabella and her thinking of helping displaced women from all over the world, here in Utah,” she said.

DeJesus regularly hosts drives to collect items, such as hygiene products, for the organization. She and Harnish both believe that serving locally can have a global impact.

“I think that’s my proudest accomplishment, being able to make a difference within my own community through serving those women,” DeJesus said. “Really, the most rewarding and fulfilling service that you ever have is within your own community.”

DeJesus discovered her love of dance just six years ago. It has become an outlet to help her through difficult times, such as

moving to a new state and the death of her beloved nana.

The piece she choreographed for her sterling scholar audition was inspired by her nana, a hardworking, single mother who valued education and who struggled with addiction later in life.

“I just remember wanting to be exactly like her and wanting to work just as hard as she worked,” DeJesus said. “I’ve been given opportunities to be in a little bit better position than she was, and so I just want to take that position of privilege that I’m in, and apply the same work ethic that she applied, and be able to make her proud, and be able to be successful in everything that I do.”

There is great satisfaction in successfully providing for oneself and one’s family, but when someone falls upon hard times, shortterm government assistance can be helpful to get residents back on their feet. We must recognize, however, that government assistance shouldn’t be relied upon forever, and that helping people find jobs and contribute to their community is vital for them and the rest of us. We need the expertise and skills that our Salt Lake County residents have to offer.

In the midst of the pandemic, when joblessness was on the rise, the federal government took measures to subsidize state unemployment payments across the nation. This was intended to keep jobless individuals and families afloat during a time of economic uncertainty. While some states are still struggling, Utah is performing exceptionally well.

Our unemployment rates are among the lowest in the nation, and we are one of two states that actually had a net gain in jobs in 2020.

In fact, many businesses are struggling to find employees to fill their open positions as they reopen and strive to return to pre-pandemic levels of business. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many “Help Wanted” signs and advertisements before.

our state, Governor Spencer Cox recently discontinued Utah’s participation in those earlier mentioned federal unemployment subsidies. This was done, in part, to combat what are called “perverse incentives,” meaning incentives that attempt to solve a problem but actually prolong or worsen the problems they are meant to solve. In this case, federal unemployment subsidies were intended to help those who could not find employment, but by continuing these benefits in good economic times, we would be disincentivizing those who are unemployed from finding gainful employment in a strong job market. We want government to avoid perverse incentives, and instead encourage people to find a long-term path to success.

There are certainly extenuating circumstances that make it difficult for people to work, but for those who can work, please know that there are plenty of people hiring and you are most certainly wanted! If you are looking for a job, I encourage you to check out any number of job posting websites. You can visit the state’s employment website at jobs.utah.gov and see if there’s a good fit for you. Our workforce is better with you in it.

Before COVID, when the hubbie and I used to travel, I’d book us in places that provided breakfast, because I love me a good breakfast buffet.

At one hotel, the breakfast bar offered freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and I couldn’t resist. I don’t usually drink fruit juice because it has so much sugar, which is hilarious because I have no problem downing an entire box of Milk Duds.

Anyway. I poured myself a cup of beautiful, pink grapefruit juice and was walking back to our table when a herd of unruly children came dashing around the corner and crashed into me, spilling grapefruit juice all over my shirt and the floor.

I stood there dripping and waiting for an apology that never came. The monsters ran past me to fill their plates with bacon. I eyed them scornfully, poured more juice and put on my Hat of Judgement.

What kind of mother lets her kids douse perfect strangers with grapefruit juice? What heathen had failed to teach these kids manners?

I got back to my table and told my husband to move so I could take his seat because he had a better view of the dining room. I needed to see the parents of these miscreants and judge them accordingly.

My judgement level increased. This neglectful mother didn’t realize her childish baboons were running amok; she had no idea they spilled juice all over me, and she was too involved in her social media and texting to be a good mother.

Verdict rendered. Guilty as charged.

Gavel pounded.

Oh, it felt good to be so superior.

But then my stupid brain stepped in.

doesn’t like to cause trouble. “Perhaps you’re being a bit harsh.”

“Shut up, brain. I’m busy.”

Instead of shutting up, my brain brought up a memory of my daughters. We were at an all-you-can-eat-buffet and the girls were not sitting like civilized humans. They were fighting, dropping food all over the floor, running back for seconds and thirds, and taking every single brownie from the dessert bar.

They were animals. And I just sat there, so happy for the break from making dinner.

I’d been that mom I was judging. My daughters had often run amok. If I’d had a cell phone when my kids were little, I would have been on that phone all the damn time. I slowly removed my Hat of Judgement and reevaluated the current situation.

I turned to my husband and said, “It’s just juice. They’re just kids. She’s just a mom.”

He didn’t know what I was talking about, but he chewed his bacon, nodded, and said, “That’s good.”

Suddenly, I was teary-eyed and felt a camaraderie with this mother. She was in the trenches, doing her very best. Aren’t we all?

The more I practice dropping judgement, the easier my life is. It’s exhausting calling out everyone’s behavior. There are better ways to spend my time, like drinking fresh grapefruit juice and remembering when my kids were wild animals.

S

cience teacher Todd Monson, who has spent 30 years inspiring and molding students at Oquirrh Hills Middle School, is retiring.

“He is the kind of teacher that everybody wants in their building and the kind of teacher that people want their kids to have,” Principal Donna Hunter said. “He is energetic, cheerful, supportive, professional, and he loves the kids.”

Monson is the kind of teacher that spends the night on the roof of Peterson’s Fresh Market, every year, for 28 years, to draw attention to Oquirrhfest, OHMS’s annual fundraising drive.

Brandon Peterson, store manager at Peterson’s, is a former student of Monson’s. He said Monson is still the enthusiastic and positive teacher he remembers from his youth.

“It doesn’t matter how bad the weather is, his attitude is always super positive and he’s excited to do that and get the students excited and motivated about what they’re doing,” Peterson said. “He’s a great example of the best that the education system has in the way that he relates to students and is an example to students of doing hard things or doing things that might be seen as uncomfortable.”

Uncomfortable, like sleeping on a roof, braving cold, snow, wind, sleet, hail and tent damage to support his students.

Peterson said because Monson has taught three generations of students at one school and in one community, he’s been able to have an impact on the Riverton community.
