A

Utah Department of Transportation project to build an overpass for Bangerter Highway over 12600 South has impacted many commuters in the southwest part of the valley.

But it has also had a substantial impact on businesses located near the project.

To accommodate the construction, it is no longer possible to cross Bangerter Highway going east–west. Those traveling north–south along Bangerter are also limited to exiting onto 12600 South in one direction. This has made it more inconvenient for people to access the many businesses in the area.

The City Journals asked Herriman residents in a Facebook poll if they had visited businesses in the area more or less since construction began. Out of 216 respondents, 81% said they have avoided the area more than usual, compared to 16% who said they haven’t changed how often they solicit businesses in the area.

An informal door-to-door survey of local businesses found that the impact has been unevenly distributed.

Restaurants with robust delivery options, like Tenney’s Pizza and Jimmy John’s, have fared a little better.

“It has gone down considerably the last few weeks, but honestly it hasn’t been as bad as I thought it would be,” said Jimmy John’s franchise owner Tristen Coates.

Alex Rees, a manager for Tenney’s Pizza, estimated that it has lost 10% to 15% its their business since construction started.

f nautical nonsense be something ya wish, come see the wacky, warm-hearted, underwater singing and dancing Utah premiere of “The SpongeBob Musical,” a comedy musical based on the animated television series “SpongeBob SquarePants.” The show, which features all the beloved characters from the cartoon and a message of the power of friendship, will be performed by students in Riverton High School’s music dance theater class under the direction of drama teacher Clin Eaton.

“If there was any version of ‘SpongeBob’ that you needed to see, it would be this musical,” choreographer Michael Milkanin said. “It is high-energy, it is camp, it is funny, it is quirky, it is cartoon and it is heartfelt. ‘SpongeBob’ has so much heart and drive. Everyone can find themselves in ‘SpongeBob,’ just trying to be their best self.”

The show’s music is as diverse as the creatures in the sea, swimming the gamut from Panic! at the Disco, David Bowie, Plain White T’s and Aerosmith to rapper T.I., Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper and John Legend.

Ethan Smith, who plays the lead role of SpongeBob, said each character has his or her own genre of music that emphasizes their personality.

“Plankton definitely represents a rapper, because he’s got this swagger evil plan,” he said. “And then SpongeBob and Squidward definitely represent classical musical theater; SpongeBob is more modern, and Squidward is more classical.

Sandy is country, and Patrick is totally the church gospel music.”

Senior Anson Bagley said the play is a great show for people who haven’t seen theater for a long time and who have had a hard year.

“Clin chose the most ridiculous, the goofiest, the funniest show that he possibly could have chosen,” Bagley said. “I think something that’s just so light-hearted and so goofy and so, so funny, is what people are going to need right now.”

Bagley plays Squidward the octopus and will be dealing with some extra legs, which should be entertaining during his tap-dancing number.

The choreographer responsible for that bit of creativity is RHS alumnus Michael Milkanin. Few will remember him as Sailor Tapper Number One in Riverton High School’s 2009 production of “Anything Goes”; more will remember him as Oaken in the Broadway traveling tour of “Frozen,” a role he played until the pandemic put the show on hold. While he anticipates going back on tour—hitting Salt Lake in November—in the meantime, he is choreographing the RHS show as a way of giving back to the program and to the teacher that got him started.

“This is my alma mater, so it’s not like I’m coming to a new place feeling like I’m a shining star,” he said. “I’m coming to my theater teacher, who taught me everything I know and was the only reason why I first took theater in the first place, so it just feels like coming home. This is a theater program that told me that I can do anything. And so I hope that I can allow people to believe that who you are is worthwhile. Whether or not this is your

Milkanin credits the encouragement from Eaton to pursue acting after high school instead of physical therapy. He studied in the musical theater program at BYU, which set him on the pathway to Broadway.

Bagley hopes to follow the same pathway—he was recently accepted to the same program. He also credits Eaton for exposing him to experiences working with professionals such as Milkanin and Broadway Hamilton star Thayne Jasperson.

“I just feel honored to work with such phenomenal choreographers,” Bagley said. “I have increased exponentially as a dancer in ways that I couldn’t have without them.” He said seeing success stories firsthand also gives him hope that he has a chance for success in theater and/or film.

“A lot of times you get discouraged because other people have been doing this so much longer and I think I’m never going to be able to compete,” he said. “What I love about theater is you bring your own individuality to it. And seeing all the professionals do that with all their work gives me a lot of hope for myself going into the future.”

Bagley also said it helps that Eaton has high expectations for his students.

“They’re not unfair expectations, and he always gives us the resources to achieve

them as long as students are willing to put in the focus and the effort,” Bagley said.

Milkanin has been impressed with the efforts of the 28 cast members of “SpongeBob.” “They have unflappable confidence and willingness to do anything I tell them,” he said. “If I said everyone’s going to do a backflip, they would all be like, ‘OK, I’ve never done it before, but I’ll try.’ They will put in the work, so I always feel like every time I come here, I don’t have to hold back.

I’m not dumbing anything down. If we’re telling the story of ‘SpongeBob,’ we’ll tell the story, and we will tell it how it should be because I know that they will rise to the occasion.” l

“We’ve had to adjust our staffing,” he said. “That’s been hard on all our baristas.”

Lyon also said that the impacts of the construction and road closure has been “much worse” than the impact of all the safety protocols imposed over the last year due to COVID-19. Many business owners said they felt out of the loop when it came to knowing when the road closure would be taking place.

“Several months ago, someone came in and said they were going to close the road but didn’t go into much detail,” said Chris Neel, a manager for Five Guys. “They didn’t know exactly when it was happening. Then someone came in the day before it closed to tell us it was happening.”

Alyssa Ward, owner of the Roxberry Smoothies location, said she received most of the information about the project’s progression from construction workers who came in for a smoothie.

While most business owners the City Journals talked to recalled a Riverton City employee communicating with them about the project, Riverton City Communications Director Casey Saxton said that UDOT would have been the party responsible for conveying information to local businesses.

“Because this is a UDOT project, they are responsible for communicating with all of the stakeholders in the area,” he said. “I be-

lieve they did make efforts to communicate with as many of the businesses as possible.”

Still, Riverton City officials have done what they could to help out the impacted businesses.

“We have encouraged people to support impacted businesses in several ways,” Saxton said. “We created a custom graphic showing where specific businesses are located and have posted that on social media, on our website and sent out the information in an email to our residents. It was also available via a link sent out to residents in a text message.

Herriman, Riverton communities come together to help the ‘Mountain View Man’

otorists who frequent 13400 South between the Herriman and Riverton border have likely noticed a man traveling up and down the road on his wheelchair.

He’ll often travel long distances, from his home on the west side of Mountain View Corridor to the Harmons at Mountain View Village or even all the way to the Walmart on the other side of Bangerter Highway. He’s often seen traveling even through adverse weather conditions, such as blizzards and rainstorms.

Concern for the man’s welfare prompted a group of Herriman and Riverton residents to get organized on social media to see if they could help.

“I had seen him on the street a couple of times,” said Traci Paoli, one of the admins of the Facebook group, Mountain View Man Fundraiser. “I saw posts on the Facebook groups asking about him, saying that they had offered him a ride but that he’d turned them down.”

The group was started in December 2020

“Anyone looking to help the man crossing mountain view and 134th in Riverton/Herriman border. I am trying to gather more information on how we can help him,” she wrote in the group’s first post.

group’s first leaders were able to do, Paoli decided to step in and take the lead.

“I noticed everyone commenting on this thing, and I said, ‘Let’s do something about this,’” she said.

The first step was setting up a donation account for people to contribute to. Instead of going with an online service like Go Fund Me, which collects fees, Paoli went to Cyprus Credit Union, which agreed to waive all taxes and fees for the account. Staff even sent an employee to the home of the “Mountain View Man,” Corey Coons, to set up the account.

Once the account was set up, Paoli began soliciting donations through the Facebook group and in other community groups such as Herriman Happenings and Riverton Happenings.

In a matter of weeks, the group raised about $4,500 to go toward a new wheelchair for Coons.

Ron Whiting, a Herriman resident who works in the mobility industry with a focus on outfitting patients with wheelchairs to meet their unique needs, volunteered to meet with Coons in his home and figure out how to best

use the money raised by the community. Given the rough terrain and poor weather he sometimes travels through, they decided to go with a lightweight frame wheelchair with special wheels designed for traveling through rain or snow. The wheelchair is now being built and will be delivered to Coons sometime in April.

Besides the main fundraiser for the wheelchair, the community also stepped up to help in other ways. Some residents donated new coats, gloves and shoes for Coons. And Harmons donated a gift basket of some of Coons’ favorite products.

Paoli has also been in touch with local and state agencies to see if it would be possible to implement safer conditions for Coons and other pedestrians attempting to cross Mountain View Corridor, such as fluorescent colored flags for people to hold as they cross the busy road.

Paoli said it was encouraging to see how quickly the community came together to help someone in need.

“It was really cool because we’re known for being kind in Utah,” she said.” I’ve always felt that way. You feel a sense of friendliness.”

The City Journals was unable to reach Coons, a naturally shy person, for comment.

But Paoli said that he and his family are “very grateful and very thankful.” l

Not Your Parent’s Art Show

he Old Dome Meeting Hall in Riverton hosted an open house on March 8 to kickstart the Not Your Parent’s Art Show exhibit.

The show, which will be open to the public until April 28, includes art submitted by kids and teens from all over the valley.

You will find a variety of art ranging from oil and acrylic paint, pen/ink and colored pencils to digital photography.

A few of the artists were present that night, available to share insights about their art to those interested to hear more.

“I’ve always loved art,” said Katy Hall, whose art was on display. “I just like to make art for gifts and to show people.”

Hall said she’s thankful for opportunities such as these that allow her to showcase her work.

“It’s amazing for other people than just my family and friends to see it so they can know how much I love it,” she said.

Kids and their parents walked around the second floor of the dome, where the art was displayed and detailed the different pieces at the event. A string of musicians took turns from the first floor, filling the air with familiar classical tunes—the perfect backdrop to the art-contemplating guests.

Each piece had an identifying label, giving the name, age, title and other additional information about the artist and its work. For

example, a few turtles with a colorful shell could be found in a piece appropriately titled “Rainbow Turtles.” Artist Tessa Jensen, age 9, then justified “I just like turtles and rainbows.”

Some famous characters appeared on canvas, such as Spider-Man, Iron Man and even Kermit the Frog. There was also some unique abstract art from a 7-month-old artist and even a piece made with markers on a T-shirt.

“You can be an artist at any age” says Vicky Wartman, Riverton City Arts administrator, who put this show together “Everyone has art inside of us. Feel good about yourself and express yourself through art!”

That’s what some inspired children decided to do, taking their talents to the creation station, crafting their own masterpiece. All are invited to come and participate. There are a few things you can expect if you decide to come.

You will get to play your own game of I spy. Do you think you can find all the animals and name them all? How about count all the superheroes, cats and dragons? The heels on a pair of shoes was particularly hard to find, but whoever does, has a shot of becoming the I spy champion. For extra credit, see if you can find the beautiful potato.

share your thoughts as you categorize your favorite pieces with the “tell us what you thought” worksheet and turn it in before you leave.

“I liked the macaw the best.” said Tyler Catron, who was visiting with his parents.

“I think they’re funny and just cool.” His younger sister, June, also said, “[My favorite part was] the art!”

Guests at the open house enjoyed a popcorn snack at the end of the show, so bring your own. Just make sure you do so afterwards as there is no food or drinks allowed on the second floor.

The exhibit will be open Monday through Wednesday, noon to 5 p.m., but you can also make an appointment. l

Ain’t no party like a Riverton High School party

A

fter more than a year with no school dances, Riverton High School students came together for junior prom with an enthusiastic turnout: more than 1,200 tickets were sold.

Junior class Vice President Dylan Elliott said it was unlike any school dance he’s been to.

“Pretty much everyone stayed till the very end of the dance, which is so rare,” he said. “Even after they turned the lights on to start cleaning up, people were still there, just because we were so excited, and it was such a fun experience.”

Junior class president Grayson Smith said it was a highlight of the night to have so many students enthusiastically participating in the RHS tradition of chanting, “Ain’t no party like a Riverton party!” after the last song of the night.

“We had this massive group, chanting this chant about our own school and the immense pride we have in the people there, and together we’re all saying it as one big voice echoing throughout the whole gym—it was really cool,” he said.

Grayson said there was also a lot of enthusiastic support when the prom royalty was announced.

“Everyone all applauded every time a name was said,” he said. “It’s been harder in years past to get that kind of excitement from the crowd, but everyone really enjoyed that.”

The dance created the feeling of unity that has been missing this school year, junior class Secretary Cayce Kirkham said.

“Dances bring a lot of unity,” Cayce said. “Just to be able to have activities where the whole school can participate together is just so huge, and that’s just something that we’ve really lacked this year.”

RHS Principal Carolyn Gough said school dances are a significant part of a rich high school experience.

“Dances are a chance to gather, to socialize with many peers all at the same time and to have a reason to dress up and do some fun activities together,” she said. She was

just as grateful as the students were when the local health department and school board finally found a way to hold the dance safely.

Students were required to wear masks and to show a negative COVID-19 test from the previous 48 hours to be admitted to the dance.

All Jordan District high schools were given permission to hold a prom. Most are scheduled for April, but RHS junior class officers scheduled theirs just weeks after approval was given.

“We just wanted to do it as soon as possible,” junior class Historian Tanner Morrison said of the early date of prom, which was the first school dance he’d ever been to.

The prom was the first school dance opportunity for many sophomores and juniors.

To make sure no one would be left out, the dance was not designated as a girl’s choice or guy’s choice so anyone who wanted to could get a date and go.

Prom was held in the school gymnasium, so the junior class officers focused their budget on decorations. A collection of gold stars on which students had written their names, a red carpet and a large balloon backdrop were popular spots for students to pose for pictures.

“A bunch of people were taking pictures,” Tanner said. “Even after the dance, there’s still people taking pictures, even while we were trying to take it down, there’s still people taking pictures. I think the decorations really brought the unity and success to the dance and made it more fun.”

Grayson said having a dance and an opportunity to make memories with friends has had a positive influence on the atmosphere at school.

Dylan said people see being allowed to hold prom as a sign that life is finally getting back to normal.

“There’s this joyous moment that we are near the end, we’re getting there and we’re able to have this high school dance,” he said.

The Jordan Board of Education also approved a senior dinner dance, to be held in May. l

ake care of yourself first is the lesson the staff at Kauri Sue Hamilton School has emphasized this year with the introduction of social groups, committees and programs that address their mental, social and physical health needs.

“We’ve got to be healthy because what we do is really hard,” said Teri Griffiths, assistant principal at Kauri Sue, a school for students with severe disabilities. “When you walk out of the doors here every day, you are mentally and physically exhausted. And so we just want to make sure that everybody’s in a good place.”

Staying connected

The school has 184 staff members and is unable to meet together as a faculty under COVID-19 safety precautions. When the pandemic began last spring, the administrative team realized they needed to find creative ways to make sure everyone was taken care of and so created an exercise group, a cooking group and a book club, which meet virtually and, when possible, in-person.

“We learn a lot about each other, and so that’s fun,” Griffiths said of her experience in book club. “We’re sharing with each other, and we’re taking on each other’s burdens.”

The exercise group meets for virtual fitness videos, water aerobics classes and walks around the school grounds. Christy Barkdull said, early on in the pandemic, the group activities motivated her to get up and moving every day and provided an opportunity to socialize.

“It was so nice to still be able to connect with people at work and talk with them, and it was fun to meet the new people that were hired and get to know them a little bit,” Barkdull said. “We just had fun.”

In the virtual cooking group, staff mem-

bers take turns sharing recipes and giving cooking demonstrations. Janette Barton, an educational support assistant, showed colleagues how to make potatoes and peach cobbler in a Dutch oven. She said getting together to talk about what they like to eat and like to cook—even if it was virtual—still felt like hanging out with friends.

“It gave me some normalcy,” she said.

“It was nice to connect with coworkers on a different level and learn about them and things in their lives.”

Principal Courtney Titus said early on in the pandemic, the activity groups helped people focus on something besides bad news and helped stave off boredom, depression and loneliness. As the pandemic wore on, the groups helped them stay connected, pushed them to try new things and provided a way to get to know each other better. She said the staff is still as tight-knit as ever; even though they don’t see each other at school, they still can’t meet in large staff meetings or overlap in classrooms due to COVID-19 precautions.

“We’re a big staff, so we’re just making sure that everybody is taken care of,” Titus said. “People just needed to be able to connect and in different ways, not always focusing on school-related things.”

Griffiths, who has worked at the school for four years, said the social groups have affected the school culture.

“I can see a big difference just in relationships within the building of those that participate in these types of activities,” she said. “People are talking to people that they wouldn’t have talked to before because they weren’t in their hallway. People stop and talk to people more than they used to. So, it’s growing relationships that weren’t there before.”

Wellness challenges

As the head of the new Wellness Committee, Cammie Larsen is responsible for keeping her colleagues focused on their mental and physical wellness this year.

“With everything going on in the world right now, mental health is so important,” Larsen said. “I feel blessed to work in a district where they are aware of this and have a plan in place. I feel grateful to work at a school that I feel already has such a positive feeling when you walk through the doors.”

Larsen has engaged the staff in fun activities that promote health and wellness.

Over Thanksgiving Break, they filled a relaxation bingo card with activities such as taking a nap, going for a walk, relaxing in a bubble bath and reading a book. During the month of February, they competed for prizes in a healthy eating challenge, earning points for daily step totals, drinking water, eating veggies and limiting sweets. Competitive staff members were vigilant with their healthy habits, but even those who only occasionally earned points still saw some healthy benefits, said Griffiths.

Spreading sunshine

Also new this year, the Sunshine Committee was created to care for the staff’s emotional health. One person from each hallway takes responsibility for being aware of the needs of their hallmates. They report to the committee when someone is having a hard

day and needs cheering up or is struggling with problems outside the classroom and needs help.

Committee members sometimes decorate someone’s classroom door or collect signatures for a card or contributions for a box of goodies to give their colleague as a pickme-up. They also take collections for baby-shower gifts or flowers for a death in the family. Small socials are held so hallmates can bond over nachos or hot cocoa.

“We’ve tried to do whatever we can do to just keep spirits up and to figure out who needs what and when and how we can help them,” Titus said. “We’ve just really tried to foster that because our job is hard enough as it is, and if we’re struggling, it’s hard to do it.

We need all hands on deck with the students that we provide services to, so we try to take care of our staff, too.”

Feeling appreciated

Ensuring everyone feels appreciated has been another priority to keep spirits up among staff this year. Titus told the school community council that the teachers couldn’t wait until the end of the year for Teacher Appreciation Week; they needed to feel supported all year long. Both the council and the administration regularly express appreciation to the teachers with treats, notes and food.

Legislative Session Sees Big Wins for Southwest Salt Lake County

By Mayor Trent Staggs For the last twenty years, Riverton and the southwest corner of Salt Lake County have accounted for approximately 70% of all the population growth in the county.

However, the infrastructure needed to keep up with this growth has not kept pace. In an effort to create a single, unified voice, I partnered with elected officials from the communities of Bluffdale, Copperton, Herriman, Riverton, South Jordan and West Jordan to create the Southwest Mayor’s Coalition. Over the last three years, we have worked tirelessly to lobby our state, local and community leaders to better recognize the extensive growth taking place in the southwest region and to push for the transportation and infrastructure funding that we desperately need.

These last three years of strategic collaboration have been successful as state and county leaders are beginning to take notice of our needs and are working to ensure funds are appropriated to help us manage our growth. This year we have seen freeway style interchanges being constructed at 12600 S, 10400 S and 6200 S and Bangerter. And over the past couple of years, Riverton has received millions of dollars in other state appropriations for key roadways in our city. This 2021 Utah Legislative Session saw even more significant investments to infrastructure, thanks in large part to our local legislators, Senator Dan McCay, Representative Candice Pierucci and Representative Mark Strong.

Riverton will now be the beneficiary of a $75 million project for the construction of a freeway style interchange at Bangerter Highway and 13400 S. In addition, with the passing of H.B. 244, Riverton will be receiving $700,000 every year for fifteen years for “...priority projects to mitigate congestion and improve transportation safety.”

The Southwest Visioning Study will provide data-driven solutions to effectively identify regional transportation needs in the southwest part of the valley.

I am also excited to announce that the Southwest Visioning Study was completed in March. This in-depth study will provide data-driven solutions to effectively identify regional transportation needs. With this critical information, we can more appropriately respond and plan for additional growth in our area.

By Councilman Troy McDougal Spring is a time of change and it has brought change to Riverton City this year.

This spring we had four wonderful employees make the decision to retire. Most of these employees have been long-time fixtures in our city and have been critical in helping us grow from a small agricultural community to the

vibrant city we are today. It is the hard work and sacrifice of city employees which make Riverton such a great place to live and yet they often go unnoticed.

Virginia Loader and Joy Johnson retired from our city recorder’s office.

They were the friendly faces and force behind elections, city meetings, legal transactions and a host of other areas. Duane Green retired from our water department, he was the guy making sure that when you turn on the tap, water comes out.

When a geyser erupted in your

neighborhood, he was on the scene working to make repairs. Marty Scheide retired from our parks department. The hours Riverton residents have spent on green fields, beautiful walks, and family activities have his mark on them.

Congratulations to each of them for their years of service. Thanks to all those who they left behind who continue to work so hard to build our community and make it a place where we can say, “We love where we live!”

By Chief Don Hutson As we emerge from the depths of the pandemic, we are all filled with anticipation and excitement as the weather warms and we can actually see hope on the horizon to resume many of the activities we have not been able to do during the last year. Flowers are blooming and the young, as well as the young at heart, are spending much more time outside enjoying the warmer weather and longer days.

Pedestrian traffic and bicycle riding increase dramatically for obvious reasons, and motorcycle riding is far more enjoyable and prevalent.

These changes in the traffic dynamic on our roadways make visibility more of a challenge and cause us concern as public safety officers. It is important for all of us to be aware of this changing traffic landscape and be more vigilant in identifying

potential hazards as we travel on our streets.

Additionally, some in our community, who are inclined to victimize others by stealing their property or burglarizing their homes, take advantage of the milder temperatures. For these reasons, it is a good time for all of us to assess the security of our property and be reminded of how to minimize risk. Mountain Ridge makes up for lost time after spring season cancellations

I

t’s not often an inaugural season rolls around, but when it does, it can be a special occasion.

Mountain Ridge High School, which opened in 2019, was on the verge of pulling off a successful inaugural sports season but the COVID-19 pandemic caused the cancellation of the school’s spring season.

One year later, the student-athletes and the community are ready for their first spring season, albeit in their second year of existence.

Athletic Director Sam Rogers said so far this spring season, he’s seen higher turnout, not only from Mountain Ridge students but also from the community, for sports that don’t usually draw big crowds.

“From a personal standpoint, it is incredible to have the spirit, the noise, just the overall feeling of having the students there brings to an athletic event,” Rogers said.

The return isn’t without it’s changes.

The pandemic continues, and while vaccines are in distribution, many of the student-athletes are still following protocols.

Those protocols, however, are not so much a burden but rather as a protection.

“At least for myself and the rest of the team, we’re really trying to do our best to have a season and not get anything cancelled,” Easton Brooks, a senior baseball

player, said. “We’re trying to follow COVID protocols as best we can. I know for most of our guys, we’re just hanging out and being around each other more off the field, so then we don’t increase the chance of [COVID-19] spreading.”

About a year ago, the realities of COVID-19 became more obvious and many started implementing safety measures. For the UHSAA, that meant suspending and ultimately cancelling the spring season.

This was tough for many of the spring student-athletes at Mountain Ridge, especially in the midst of its inaugural season.

Rogers said “shock and dismay” permeated throughout the spring programs. In particular, many of the coaches and administrators felt bad for last year’s seniors who didn’t get a senior season.

The baseball team was in St. George for a preseason tournament when it heard of the cancellation. Baseball coach Brock Whitney said his players took it hard.

“We prepared, and we played during the fall; we had open gym and practices during the winter; we got all excited and ready to go, and we didn’t go,” he said. “That was the hardest thing: being prepared and excited, and having it taken away.”

many realized this wouldn’t be like 2020.

Rogers said he’s noticed a lot of gratitude from the spring student-athletes because it looks to be minimal disruptions for the 2021 spring season. Furthermore, he said many are taking the COVID protocols seriously, and Mountain Ridge has recently seen minimal cases of COVID-19.

Drawing on his past experience as a coach, Rogers said he knows how high school athletes’ minds work, and he sees a higher work ethic coming out of Mountain Ridge student-athletes.

“You can see that these kids not only have talent but that talent is increasing because they are working so hard in order to ensure they actually get their season,” he said.

“They have a lot of pride in what they do, and that is also helping to improve their play each and every game.”

While there’s been a lot the Mountain Ridge community has missed out on because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Rogers said he’s seeing a high level of excitement for this spring season.

He said there were many community members excited to support the school, even if they didn’t have a kid attending. Rogers said that was the biggest letdown from the school missing2:38:03 its inaugural spring season.

As for the players, Brooks said there are high goals and a lot of excitement among him and his baseball teammates as they return to the diamond.

“We felt like we had something to prove, especially since last year we weren’t able to really show who we are and what we could really do,” he said. l

Riverton soccer seniors gain experience on fly after pandemic-cancelled season

T

here’s a lot the Riverton High School boys soccer team missed out on last year, but the biggest one was helping the team’s seniors get experience.

The last time this year’s seniors took the field for a full season, they were sophomores.

Riverton Head Coach Paul Moizer said he uses the junior season to get juniors into the rotation and give them varsity experience.

Without a junior season, many of the Riverton seniors are playing on the varsity team with minimal to no varsity experience.

“It’s kind of like we’re starting further behind than we usually do,” Moizer said.

That feeling, however, hasn’t stopped the Silverwolves from pushing forward.

Moizer said the the early part of the season has required patience and repetition to help his players adjust to their new roles.

While many of the student-athletes are new to the varsity level, Moizer said some do have some experience. He said a few were in the rotation as sophomores and others worked in the rotation during the few matches before last season’s cancellation.

Senior Weston Daw, a senior with past varsity experience, said he’s found himself helping other players with less experience get into the right mindset for varsity.

“We let them know that they’re good, to not worry about when they make mistakes,

just to keep working harder and fighting to get the ball back,” he said.

Another area Moizer is working with his team is helping them blend their playing styles and getting them all on the same page.

He’s also moving players around, trying to find the best rotation. One area that has seen the most change is goalkeeper.

Moizer said he had two senior goalkeepers graduate last year and another who decided not to return. This has forced him to bring in two field players to fill the role.

Senior Carver Bryan and sophomore Kyle Wood are both making the switch to goalkeeper. Moizer said he splits them in games, letting one play each half.

“They’re both really aggressive and great at coming out to the ball, but they’re still learning the angles and the shot-stopping,” he said. “It’s what you’d expect.

They’ll come out and take on a player no problem, but the command of the box and all that is what we’re really working on.”

It’s still early in the season, but Moizer said he believes his team is moving in the right direction and making improvements.

These improvements add to the areas the Silverwolves already thrive. For one, Moizer said his team is a fast one that has really good fundamentals.

chemistry, which helps the players in their goals for improvement.

Senior Dalton Churilla said some of his chemistry with other players comes from playing on the same club teams.

He said he’s played with five other seniors in club soccer, and there are basically two other teams most of his teammates play on during the high school offseason.

tainty and hardship, this year’s outlook looks much more clear. With that clearer horizon comes a bevy of goals, and Churilla is clear on where his team wants to be at the end of the year.

“Honestly, I want to take region,” he said. “I think we can if we can get all of our parts together and play our cards right and fight for it.” l

First-time head coach Dorton takes reins of Riverton girls lacrosse

“Lacrosse has been such a big part of my life, and I knew I’d eventually have to stop playing,” she said. “The only way I felt like I could still be involved in this sport is to coach.”

That passion for lacrosse and coaching wasn’t lost on the Riverton administration.

Athletic director Daniel Henderson said he thinks she is one who will help the program get going since its inaugural season saw cancellation because of COVID-19.

“We felt like she had that motivation, that desire to continue,” he said. “There’s good lacrosse in this area for boys and girls, some enthusiasm for it, and we felt like she was the right one to lead the way and get that moving in the right direction.”

Dorton got her start at Timpview High School in Provo before playing women’s lacrosse at the University of Utah. After about a year, she suffered a whiplash injury, forcing her to quit.

It was this incident that led her to start pursuing coaching. She and a friend began a club team in the Kaysville area in 2018. By the spring of 2019, she got a job coaching junior varsity at Skyline High School.

“A lot of teams can be cliquey,” she said.

“High school girls can just be mean sometimes, but they are just so inclusive and welcoming, and they are all just best friends with each other. So I think that’s my favorite part about Riverton, specifically the culture the girls have there.”

With this foundation, Dorton said there isn’t much she needs to add to the culture. Although she does want the players to be classy on the field and play clean.

Dorton’s early efforts in coaching weren’t lost on the players. Senior Megan Davenport said she has enjoyed her time so far with Dorton.

“She gets along super with the girls,” Davenport said. “She balances having fun and work.”

While the team hasn’t been much of a challenge, the adjustment to being a head has, at times. Dorton said she’s had to adjust to realizing matches mean more than they have in the past.

“Coming into that has been kind of a struggle because it never had this kind of pressure on me as a coach before,” she said.

“JV and club, it’s just a much different role.

That’s something I’m working on, but again, it’s still really early in the season, so I’m

Still, Dorton has her sights set on winning a state championship and thinks her team has what it takes to win one. That goal, however, isn’t the most important one to her for this season.

Dorton said she hopes she can help her players feel the satisfaction of giving it everything they had. She said this is important to her since many returning players missed out on an inaugural season last year because of COVID-19.

To help her players overcome the cancellation of last year, Dorton has returned to the fundamentals to help the student-athletes shake off the rust. Even amidst a fundamental-heavy approach, Dorton said she’s noticed a positive response from the team.

“For the most part, I think they want this more than anything just because they didn’t get this last year,” she said. “So they’re super motivated. That also means they are working hard to stay safe so they can continue their season.”

Davenport said that motivation has come from Dorton and her positive talk and encouragement “She told us earlier in the year, ‘You guys can be the state champions,’ and that means a lot from a coach that she has that much belief in us,” she said. “I really like how she really pushes us to do our best.” l

Celebrate National Walking Day with a stroll or hike

top talkin’ and start walkin’! Get up, get out and form an exercise plan because National Walking Day is April 7.

“Walking at a nice pace will give you all the exercise you need for your heart and lungs,” said Bill Caughey, personal trainer at Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness center.

Walking is a great way to improve or maintain your health. Just 30 minutes a day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat and boost muscle power and endurance.

Exercise does not need to be vigorous or done for long periods of time to improve your health. A 2007 study by betterhealth.com of inactive women, found that even low levels of exercise, 75 minutes a week, improved fitness levels immensely compared to a non-exercising group.

“Walking forces your heart and lungs to work. I prefer having my clients walk rather than run. The reason is running is high impact and will bother their hips, knees and ankles,” Caughey said.

Walking is low impact, requires minimal equipment and can be done at any time of the day.

“Young folks and older folks can do it. There is no down side. Start by going around your block once.

Listen to your body, if once around is good it is OK. The next day you might do a little more. In two or three weeks you could easily walk a mile,” Caughey said.

Walking is known as a weight bearing exercise.

Its benefits include: reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, improved management of conditions such as hy-

pertension, high cholesterol and diabetes and reduced body fat.

To get the health benefits, try to walk at least 30 minutes as briskly as you can each day. Brisk means you can still talk, but not sing. Moderate activities pose little health risk, but if you have a medical condition speak to your doctor before beginning any exercise program.

Some suggestions to build walking into your daily routine include taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking far away from the store entrance and walking to your shopping destination, if possible.

“At a certain point you will feel good, the endor-

phins are being released. A suggestion when you walk, expand your gate (lengthen your stride). It will stretch your hips and joints and the muscles around them,” Caughey said. “Sweating is not a function of how hard you have exercised.”

Walking is a low-cost exercise. Good shoes and loose fitting clothes are important.

“Shoes are important, watch them closely. If you use them regularly the soles will get crushed. That is natural. Be prepared to get new ones about every six months,” Caughey said.

Walking can be used along with resistance training to increase fitness levels. Caughey uses it for his personal training experience.

“I am a competitive powerlifter. After a strenuous workout I will walk around the block or on the treadmill. It will flush my body full of blood and carry nutrients all over. It feeds the parts of my body that need it.

Walking is also great after a crappy day at work. Come home and immediately go for a walk. It will settle your mind and allow your body to relax. Then go eat dinner and do your evening chores,” he said.

uring the month of April, National Canine Fitness Month focuses on keeping our loyal companions happy and healthy.

“Dogs definitely need a lot of exercise and activity,” said Cindy Christensen, an experienced dog trainer and owner of Let’s Train Your Dog. “Activity is where a dog gets its mental health. Any dog can become depressed and destructive, and I think it is one of the biggest things that dogs do not get enough exercise.”

Directing your dog through a timed obstacle course may not be the type of exercise your companion needs. The size and breed of the dog will dictate the type of training it needs.

“Walking your dog is a relatively new thing. In my day we opened the back door and let them run around. Working dogs like a German shepherd or labradoodle are high-energy breeds and they need a lot of exercise.

A Newfoundland is a giant dog but will sleep all day. The breed of the dog is a big factor,” Christensen said.

Active play is one way to incorporate more exercise for your dog. Throw a ball or stick in a safe environment or better yet run or jog alongside it. Others may use their own yoga routine, asking the dog to lay down when you’re in a cobra pose or sit when you’re in a downward-facing dog pose.

become a normal lifestyle for many canines and their humans. The opposite of a sedentary lifestyle is movement. Canine Fitness Month encourages dog owners to take a step toward a healthier lifestyle with their four-legged friends.

“Sometimes we wonder why dogs go crazy. I had a depressed pit bull in Magna that jumped through a plate glass window. It had so much energy and needed to expend that energy.

I really believe that people don’t exercise their dogs enough,” Christensen said.

The amount of exercise a dog needs should be a deciding factor in the type of dog you bring into your life and home.

“Do research before you pick a dog. Learn about the mom and dad of the puppies. Are they high energy or do they have other health issues? I believe many of the backyard breeders do not know what they are doing. Do your homework. Don’t pay a fortune for a dog that you don’t know much about,” Christensen said.

Obedience training can begin when a puppy reaches four weeks, but it is never too old to learn.

“I think anyone can teach sit, come, heal, stay. It takes more than that to help the dog become well behaved,” Christensen said.

Types of training methods vary. Christensen recommends teaching the dog respect, others use e-collars or treat recognition.

“A dog really needs a couple of hours a day. A dog needs activity and if you are not willing then you probably should not buy one,” Christensen said.

Open space and family activities contribute to county quality of life

The days are starting to get longer and warmer, and that means many county residents are looking for things to do outside this spring. We are lucky to live in the beautiful state of Utah, with countless scenic locations that draw locals and outsiders alike. But residents don’t have to go far to enjoy the bright sunny days and pleasant evenings outside.

Salt Lake County is home to over 70 parks throughout the valley, as well as 25 designated open space areas. From structured activities and events, to reservable outdoor amenities, to simple green space areas to get away from it all, there are plenty of options to enjoy the summer.

You might wonder why the county has such a plethora of outdoor spaces for its residents. The answer is simple: we are committed to creating an environment in which our residents can thrive. More than just an entity charged with providing basic governmental services, Salt Lake County is invested in the well-being of its residents. Healthy, wholesome activities that foster families and friendships is an important part of that success.

We want Salt Lake County to be a great place to live, work, raise a family, and recreate. Outdoor venues for a variety of activities contribute to good mental and physical health, and increase the sense of community

our residents feel. We work better together as friends, neighbors, and – yes, elected officials - when we have a strong emotional investment in our community. I firmly believe adequate open spaces contribute to this community approach.

Whenever I face a budgetary decision in my role as a member of the County Council, I

always ask myself some key questions. First, is this the proper role of government? In our zeal to solve problems and provide resources to our residents, it’s always helpful to constantly remind ourselves what the appropriate role of county government is. Second, is this an efficient and effective use of taxpayer dollars? We want to make sure any government funded program, facility, or resource is operating with sound principles. And third, is this in accordance with the wishes of the taxpayers? Our job is to represent the people and their priorities as public servants.

The county’s open space amenities meet all three of these questions with a resounding yes. Open spaces are by definition a public good, our Parks and Rec department is a great example of efficiency, and voters have shown again and again the value they place on parks and open space.

We can always improve in our administration and management of county resources, and we welcome public input to help us do that. But I for one am pleased to live in a county that values the benefits to health and community that our beautiful outdoor spaces provide.

So this spring gather up the kids or grab your friends and come visit one of our many parks or open spaces. I hope to see you out there!

Teaching yoga at Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center means I need to stay certified in CPR and first aid. After completing my recent CPR class, the only thing I know for sure is, “Hi, I’m Peri Kinder and I’m certified in CPR” is not the same as “Hi, I’m Peri Kinder and I can save your life.”

My previous medical training was years of watching M*A*S*H episodes, specifically the one where Father Mulcahy performs a tracheotomy on a wounded soldier by slicing open the man’s throat and sticking a pen down his windpipe. We didn’t learn how to do that.

Theoretically, we learned how to identify serious injuries, how to administer aid and how to use an AED (not to be confused with an IED or an IUD).

We were taught the signs of shock, which include being irritable and restless, and I realized I’ve been in shock for a half-century. If someone is in shock, you should cover them with a blanket. I do that after work. I wrap up in a blanket and tell my family, “Stay away. I’m in shock.”

Another technique we covered was how to make small talk with people who are injured. We’re supposed to put them at ease until emergency personnel show up. But I’m terrible at small talk. Someone could have a bone sticking out of their thigh and I’d say, “So, do you like to eat

We learned about the signs of a stroke.

The instructor said if you think someone is having a stroke, ask them to smile. But here’s the rub--you should never ask a woman to smile, even if it could save her life. Because if she isn’t having a stroke, she’ll murder you.

Did you know a wound from nuclear radiation is considered a critical burn?

Here’s my idea of a critical burn: “Your hair is so ratty it squeaks when you walk.”

Anaphylaxis (a.k.a. severe allergic reaction) is pretty nasty, too. If you have an epi-pen, I hope you’re conscious enough to use it because needles make me faint.

And don’t you think anaphylaxis sounds like the name of a Jane Austen character?

“Anna Phalaxis was prone to consumption and frailty.”

During the class, I expressed concern that I wouldn’t be able to remember all this info if there was an actual emergency, but the instructors were truly kind. They said, “Don’t overthink it. Let your training kick in.”

So, if you’re in my yoga class and have a medical emergency, I’m trained to get someone else to help. You can thank me later.

A

Utah Department of Transportation project to build an overpass for Bangerter Highway over 12600 South has impacted many commuters in the southwest part of the valley.

But it has also had a substantial impact on businesses located near the project.

To accommodate the construction, it is no longer possible to cross Bangerter Highway going east–west. Those traveling north–south along Bangerter are also limited to exiting onto 12600 South in one direction. This has made it more inconvenient for people to access the many businesses in the area.

The City Journals asked Herriman residents in a Facebook poll if they had visited businesses in the area more or less since construction began. Out of 216 respondents, 81% said they have avoided the area more than usual, compared to 16% who said they haven’t changed how often they solicit businesses in the area.

An informal door-to-door survey of local businesses found that the impact has been unevenly distributed.

Restaurants with robust delivery options, like Tenney’s Pizza and Jimmy John’s, have fared a little better.

“It has gone down considerably the last few weeks, but honestly it hasn’t been as bad as I thought it would be,” said Jimmy John’s franchise owner Tristen Coates.

Alex Rees, a manager for Tenney’s Pizza, estimated that it has lost 10% to 15% its their business since construction started.
