Hello, readers, It’s a new year in Ogden, a time to look back on this past year and take it all in. As a community, we have accomplished so much this year, from making national news as one of the best places to live and work, to the many great fundraisers and community projects that have happened. It is a great time to live in Ogden, where the possibilities are endless.

This year I hope you all make an effort to get out and explore this town, see with new eyes and join in local events and projects. Take a walk in your neighborhood and discover a new shop. Say hello to your neighbors and local business owners. Go to an event and meet new people. Make this year the year that you fall in love with Ogden.

As always, I hope you enjoy this issue of The Ogden Source; we certainly enjoyed putting it together for you.

A Day in the Life of an Employee of Pepsi-Cola Company

any Ogdenites were captivated and curious about the “Crash Party” Pepsi planned a couple of years ago to give thanks to many locals, including Karen Waters, the owner of Karen’s Café. From this moment forward, Pepsi would become a mainstay in local events and a community partner for many local organizations. What motivates a company to throw a party that guarantees no profit? What drives these employees to be so involved with local events?

In the 1920s Pepsi was a franchised business, and families, or individuals could buy into Pepsi. In 1924, a Utah family, the Larsons, bought a franchise. By the 1970s several familyowned franchises came together to form a co-op called Admiral Beverage. Pepsi has had a presence in Ogden since the 1920s, and the company still considers itself a local business. Pepsi offers jobs to local residents and, with good reason, the company brags that it has had zero layoffs since the mid-40s. If the company downsizes, it finds work for the employees affected.

Rick Danger, franchise general manager for Pepsi-Cola, has a team of devoted employees who continually look for ways to bring about community cohesion through supporting local community events and programs.

Danger is a humble man who insisted that this article focuses on other employees because they are the “creative team of folks who make all the magic happen. What we do/have done really comes from them and the collaboration we have. We have the most amazing people here; I’m only a small part of them.”

Many Ogden residents are aware of Pepsi’s presence in Ogden. However, many of us don’t really have the opportunity to understand the work that is being done behind the warehouse doors. Many local residents remember Pepsi being on the corner of 17th and Washington Blvd., a building that has since been torn down. The current location in Pleasant View employs about 300 people, and production of Pepsi products is a nonstop operation. It also boasts a large warehouse, where pallet upon pallet of products reaches at least 30 feet above the ground.

The warehouse is massive, making it impossible to guess the number of bottles it currently holds. On a tour through the warehouse, Danger informed us that all the products we see in the warehouse will be distributed within 10 days. It is impossible to comprehend the work that must go into a turnover rate of 10 days, with so much product towering above.

Warehouse workers move around like bees in a hive, working with precision, and their actions appear flawless. Angialique Allen, officer manager for Pepsi-Cola Company, points out an area of the warehouse that holds damaged product. The damaged product can be something as simple as rippled or dented cans, or a few ruptured cans inside a 12-pack. She explains that

employees will clean up the cans that have not been damaged, and more often than not the company will donate these cans to homeless shelters or non-profit organizations. Once again, Pepsi is providing their products to the community without the guarantee of profit.

Talking with the employees provides an opportunity to understand the company’s commitment to the community, as well as the culture and methods the company holds dear.

Clint Heaps, human resource manager for Pepsi-Cola Company, spends his days talking with employees at the several plants throughout the state. He enjoys learning the culture of each city, allowing for there to be diverse opinions and methods of operation for Admiral Beverage. For Heaps, the love and passion for the job come from meeting and talking with employees, but mostly he enjoys how the “corporation cares about employees personally and professionally. Each [working] area of Pepsi has its own community; however, they are all close to one another.” He said that if anyone is interested in working for Pepsi-Cola Company they “have gotta love people!”

Darrin Clarke, special events manager, has worked at Pepsi-Cola Company for a total of five years. He is tasked with coordinating special events throughout Ogden and surrounding areas. When asked what he loves most about his job, without hesitation, he said, “My connections with the community and my fellow co-workers.” He explained that working for Pepsi is like being a part of a large family, with each employee being recognized for their talents and hard work.

Clarke was chosen as special events manager two and half years ago, when Danger spotted him in the warehouse singing and dancing. “Rick recognized my potential. My strengths were applied and recognized.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen Darrin unhappy,” Danger said. Clarke’s happiness and love of people are not just words.

The Pepsi-Cola Company has partnered with many local organizations, including Nurture the Creative Mind, GOAL Foundation, Ogden Marathon, Ogden Women’s Chamber, Farmer’s Market and suicide prevention programs.

Clarke’s main goal is to “build authentic connections and help people out.” Summer months are especially busy for the employees of Pepsi, with Clarke averaging 70-80 hour work weeks. “It can be exhausting work, but it’s the good exhausted.

I’m emotionally exhausted in the best way possible,” Clarke said, adding that the long hours help build “more meaningful partnerships.”

Company for one and a half years as officer manager. She left a corporate job in the insurance industry to take her current position at Pepsi. She initially lived in Tooele and was making the long commute to Ogden, but the long drives were becoming burdensome, so she bought a condo in Ogden. The weekend she needed to move was the very weekend of the Pepsi surprise party. Allen explains that she “had only worked for Pepsi for a couple of months when I needed to move and I knew I had to be at the surprise party, as every employee was involved in the crash party. Rick called me in the middle of the week and said, ‘Be ready by 9 a.m., I found a way to help get you moved.’ I wasn’t sure what was going to happen, but I was ready.” At 9 a.m. a large 7-Up semi showed up to Allen’s house with a few employees and they moved all of her belongings to her new home. When she arrived at the new house, “there were employees, I didn’t even know putting things away. They had moved all the heavy furniture upstairs. Someone had put our beds together and put sheets on them. A woman I didn’t even know was cleaning my dishes and putting them away.” Her house was put together in about 45 minutes with all the help the employees had given her. She admits that the generosity made her cry.

Allen explained that “this company is not seeking recognition. Pepsi is family owned and local, and that is why they are so invested in supporting local programs and businesses.

They know what it is like to be a small business trying to make it. Local is huge [for Pepsi.] Though Admiral Beverage is a large corporation, they have somehow maintained their connection with employees. The owner asks about our personal lives and he hasn’t lost his connection with employees.” When Allen started working at Pepsi, she was a single mom, and she explained that many employees would help with picking up her kids from school, “without even having to ask.” Pepsi takes these same principles and applies them to local business partners, and “building community is primary, and profit is secondary” for Pepsi-Cola Company. According to Allen, Pepsi-Cola sees each customer as valued, no matter the size of the account. She said, “there is no more important customer”; rather each client is unique and special to the company. Much like the employees.

Pepsi-Cola Company truly has a passion for the Ogden community, and they show this by investing in “the local,” valuing their employees and genuinely caring about local businesses and non-profits. Of course, no company can be perfect, but after spending the day with the employees of PepsiCola Company, Admiral Beverage is as near a perfect local partner as any community could ask for. l

Habitat for Humanity Homes Need Helping Hand

eber State University is announcing their scheduled events for the 2016 Weber Reads Shakespeare series. The lecture series and accompanying film series are part of a large WSU commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. Future events will be announced at a later date for the continuing commemoration for fall semester 2016. Events are free and open to the public. Lectures are scheduled in Special Collections, Stewart Library (upstairs, south side of the building) except for Feb. 23, which was undetermined at publishing deadline. All movies will be in the Wildcat Theater and will begin at 6:30 p.m., with an introduction of the film at the beginning and a discussion of the film afterwards.

abitat for Humanity International is a non-profit housing builder founded in 1976. Since that time Habitat for Humanity has spread around the globe, with central offices on five continents, and has built over 800,000 homes housing more than four million people, making it the largest not-for-profit builder in the world.

In addition to the central offices, community level offices work in collaboration with the larger organization to identify and serve local families. The local community office serves residents of Weber and Davis counties and builds one home per year on average, though their latest project has hit some speed bumps with funding.

Habitat provides low-cost homes for families in need and relies entirely on the generous donations of individuals and organizations in the community. As a result, the timeline of getting houses finished and available for selected families is dependent on both monetary donations and volunteer time.

Mauricio and Mayra Ceja and their three children were chosen as the family that would benefit from this current Habitat project locally. Candidate families are required to apply for the program and must meet low-income qualifications, as well as take home ownership classes and put in a minimum of 500 hours of “sweat equity” doing community service and helping to construct the home themselves. The Cejas are currently living in a 1960s model trailer designed for one or two people.

This home will not only give them some much-needed space, but will also provide a safe yard for the children to play in.

The local Habitat for Humanity office will sell the home to the Ceja’s at a no-profit price with zero interest. This allows the money invested to be put back into the program to help other families and is standard practice for Habitat for Humanity International, which believes in giving in-need families a handup, not a handout. The home was dedicated on Dec. 22, 2015, just in time for the holidays.

While construction is completed and the home dedicated, bills for construction are still coming in, and the local affiliate office is in need of help from the community to cover those costs. Also, the work of an organization like this is never done, and the search for another piece of property and another family has already begun. There are plenty ways you can help without having to open your wallet.

While Habitat for Humanity greatly appreciates anyone willing to donate their time or money in any capacity, some aspects of the organization and process are severely underserved and contribute heavily to slowing down the process.

“We tend to have a great turnout for people willing to come out and help swing a hammer, but we tend to have a tougher time getting volunteers willing to work behind the scenes by serving on our committees, board of directors, or volunteering to help organize a special event or fundraiser. Most people aren’t really aware of everything it takes to get these homes built,” said Lynn Kelley, who runs the Weber/Davis affiliate office.

In addition to donations of money and manual labor, Habitat for Humanity depends on local specialists and suppliers to donate their skills and materials. If you know how to install a toilet or work electrical, or even if you have access to discounted materials, Habitat for Humanity would love to hear from you.

If you’re interested in getting involved with Habitat for Humanity’s next project, it’s recommended you join one of their public meetings being held at local libraries in January.

“Meetings are held in the library; we hold them both in Ogden and Layton so that we can serve Weber and Davis County. The date hasn’t been established yet or the time, but we hold them during the day and in the evening so if people work they can make one or the other,” said Dixie Story, office manager for the Weber/Davis office.

In addition to homebuilding, Habitat for Humanity Weber/ Davis runs another program, called A Brush with Kindness, that offers free or low-cost services to those in need to help with home improvements, from cleaning up a yard or garage to repainting a house or putting up a fence. Labor is always free and individuals are offered the same zero profit, no interest financing to repay costs on any materials. Habitat’s programs not only give a helping hand to families in need, but also contribute to rebuilding our communities, making them a better place to live for everyone.

Hikers Show Up for Waterfall Canyon

T

he Western Weber Planning Commission meeting on Dec. 8 had a full house of citizens concerned about Waterfall Canyon. Waterfall Canyon is one of the most popular trails in the Ogden area, attracting visitors from Ogden City, Weber County and beyond. Between Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day, parked vehicles can overflow from the 29th St. Trailhead parking area for a block or two to the north and west. The issue is, the canyon is the private property of Chris Peterson. This is contrasted with the traditional recreational use of the area for many, many generations, since the beginning of the City of Ogden and before.

The agenda for the commission meeting was to consider a conditional use permit for the continued development of a private park in the 1440 acres of mountainside owned by Peterson.

Local trail users were already concerned since signs appeared last April informing hikers they needed ID and wristbands to proceed along the trails. Even though that sign was removed almost immediately, it once again alerted trail users to a perceived threat of access to their beloved canyon. As a public relations effort, the signs aggravated the tension between a private property owner and the public.

That tension was evident as the audience gathered for the meeting. Additional chairs were added to the back of the hall to accommodate the expected crowd, and that expected crowd showed up. The agenda item was labeled: Consideration and action for a conditional use permit request for a private and recreation grounds to be located on parcel #14-109-0002, 05-0010001, and 05-001-0003 in the Waterfall Canyon Area (Sherpa Logistics, LLC dba Utah Adventure Center, Applicant; Chris Peter, Agent) Immediately at the start of the meeting, the moderator and commission chair, Janet Borklund, explained that the meeting was NOT a place to discuss the issue of public access. It was explained that those issues would need to be addressed outside

the commission. The purpose of the meeting was only to determine if the proposal met the zoning use guideline already determined. Then, a KUED film about the Via Ferrata, a climbing route already built by landowner Chris Peterson, was shown.

The agenda packet for the meeting, available online prior to the meeting, noted that the staff reviewing the proposal had already recommended that the conditional use permit be approved, as it meets all the pre-determine guidelines, noting that it did not affect use by the general public. The staff noted that there was no request to build any structures; public parking was already available; adequate restrooms were already in existence; the fire district had firefighting and search and rescue access to the canyon via already established roads; and they noted that there was no existing standard for them to judge the Via Ferrata, a climbing route already built by Peterson in the area. They also noted that when parking, drinking and waste water become an issue, they are obligated to revisit the permit to ensure compliance.

Once public comments were permitted, it became apparent that the right of public access, predating private use, would be protected in the wording of the permit. The permit would only cover the commercial aspects of the private park in providing tour guides and education about the park offerings. The private park will still have the ability to restrict public access under certain circumstances, especially during sniper training sessions. Training sessions have already been held in the area, to the consternation of many people.

The CEO of the Front Climbing Gym, Shad Burnham, did ask questions that couldn’t be answered by the commission. As a professional guide in Alaska and the Western United States, he pointed out that there are standards to be met by professional guides. He asked what guarantees were made that the tour guides in Peterson’s plans would meet these guidelines. He also noted that there ARE standards for

installing climbing rungs like those already installed in the Via Ferrata. Those standards include stainless steel rungs to avoid corrosion damaging the rocks where they are installed. The rungs in the Via Ferrata are made of standard rebar, which will corrode and weaken over time. He said that these did not meet acceptable standards for rock protection.

The commission appeared to have learned this for the first time and did not have a response.

Jay Hudson, one of the original builders of the Ogden Trail system, now part of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, said that in 1982 there was a landmark agreement with Weber County, Ogden City, and the Malan family, then owners of the area now in question, for the Forest Service to build an access road to the canyon with the agreement to keep the canyon open to the public.

Chris Peterson spoke next, emphasizing his patriotic participation in the sniper training program. Sessions have included national and local SWAT teams. He also said that he was managing guided tours in national forests, state parks and national parks in Utah. He was applying for the conditional permit use because he had been notified earlier this year that he needed to do so. Acquiring the permit was the only thing that was different from the way he had been managing his property.

In discussing paying guests of the private park, he said that they would be signing a waiver for injuries suffered while participating in his commercial venture. He also said that in Utah, you cannot sue a landowner if injured on private property.

When the commission voted, they noted again that the meeting was not the forum for discussing a public trail on private property: “Access is not the domain of this forum.” Since Peterson’s plan was intended to increase tourist use, while at the same time allowing public access, the permit application fit the vision of the general zoning plan and was approved, subject to all agency requirements in the future. l

Every family is different and every family is looking for something different to meet their needs,” said Fred Donaldson, assistant director of DaVinci Academy, a charter school for the sciences and arts. Family oriented education is the basis for the programs offered at DaVinci, which is located right in the heart of downtown Ogden–in the old cannery building on 20th and Grant. DaVinci opened its doors in 2004, starting as a high school. Later, the school expanded to include Little DaVinci, an elementary school, and last year added a K-6 distance program (the first of its kind in the state) which was created to be a bridge between the public and homeschool communities.

In addition to a focus on the arts and sciences, DaVinci is in the process of incorporating a technology component to better help their students meet market demands. Donaldson explains that students are given as much exposure to the careers they are interested in as possible. In addition to traditional on-site learning, students are also engaged in hands-on experiences.

For example, those interested in the arts have opportunities to complete internships at places like Capitol Theater and Weber State. Recently, a group of students took a trip to Salt Lake to audition for a production called “Rock of Ages,” and many were given recording contracts to participate. Students are mentored by individuals in the industries they are interested in, and much of this is done during school time as part of their education to prepare them for these careers.

The distance program, lead by Kim Goats, is an entirely different educational experience. “It began to fill a need,” explained Kim. “There was a need in the homeschool

community and there was a need in the charter community, and we just married those needs together.” The results are amazing! Children in the distance program come twice a week for electives and secondary subjects like history and science, and parents teach at home the other days of the week. Parents have educational counselors who collaborate with families in purchasing curriculum that fits the needs and interests of the child. The program is perfect for families who may be homeschool-minded but would like the emotional, physical and financial support of a public school. Kim, a homeschool mom herself, started this program from scratch with no idea how it would turn out. Now, she is receiving phone calls from people all over the country wanting to know more about this new model for connecting homeschool with public school. In only its second year, the distance program has branches in Ogden, Logan, Farmington and West Jordan.

“The distance program allows parents to have more collaboration and daily involvement,” explained Donaldson.

“Onsite is more traditional. Both appeal to families looking for a school with a safe atmosphere and a culture free from bullying and external pressures, where their kids are free to thrive. The difference is the way you feel in the school. When a kid comes here, they want to be here.”

Undercover Super Woman!

o you ever wonder how things get started?

You generally find that there was one person with a passion who set the ball rolling. Successful and vibrant programs abound at Weber State University, as well as collaborative projects with WSU and surrounding communities.

A closer look at many of these programs lead directly back to Dr. Kathryn MacKay, from the WSU department of history. She has a knack for beginning authentic ways to participate as a citizen in our community.

Dr. MacKay arrived at WSU in 1988, just after participating as a graduate student in the formation of the women’s studies program at the University of Utah. She immediately got to work with Dr. Hancy Haanstad (political science) and Dr. Barbara West (English) to develop a Women Studies program at WSU, instituted in 1991, with MacKay as the first coordinator. She was followed by Dr. Gloria Wurst (zoology) and a long line of disguised scholars since then.

By the end of her three-year term as women’s studies coordinator, she, and a colleague, created the Teaching and Learning Forum and served as its director until 1999.

The TLF provides faculty development opportunities and inclusion in the national conversation about education.

Next up, she joined Utah Campus Compact, a statewide coalition of colleges and

universities dedicated to engaging students in their communities. From 2000-2007, she and other faculty created the Office of Academic Service Learning. The first office was nothing more than a broom closet with a desk, with begged, borrowed and stolen equipment. Today, the Center for Community Engaged Learning, formerly the Community Involvement Center established in June 2007, is MacKay’s legacy.

The center provides students with opportunities to put their academic learning into practice by creating connections to give and grow through practical experiences, and to build a community that thrives.

Her next project with Town and Gown (University + Communities) was the Weber Reads project, created in 2007-2008. Joining in partnership with Weber State University, Weber Public Libraries, and Weber County Commissioners, the entire local community has been joining together to read and talk about the same book. Since 2007, participants have read Beowulf, Frankenstein, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, Frederick Douglas & Harriet Jacobs, The Founding Fathers and Their Documents, Emily Dickinson, Homer’s Odyssey, E.B. White & Charlotte’s Web, and in 2015-16, Shakespeare.

Getting restless for a new project, she created Arts in the Parks in 2010, gathering faculty members and students from the

performing and visual arts to present a weeklong summer program presented at four-five public parks in Ogden. Several years later, Science in the Parks joined in the project. Many of these parks serve inner-city neighborhoods.

This outreach program brings unique arts and science experiences to children, as well as a free lunch.

The same year, 2010, she coordinated the new public history minor at WSU, and also initiated The American Democracy Project.

The American Democracy Project is focused on higher education’s role in preparing the next generation of informed and engaged citizens.

2010 was a busy year. She also initiated the formation of the Weber Arts Council.

Elected president of the Folklore Society of Utah in 2014, she added one more responsibility to her full load of teaching history, developing new classes and programs, mentoring students, public speaking and community involvement.

She is also a long-standing member of the Ogden City Landmarks Commission and the Brigham City Museum Board.

But, she isn’t finished yet! She is currently working to develop a state park internship for WSU Social Science and Natural Sciences students to provide research and development for Utah State Parks. She is working closely with Utah State Parks, Stewardship of Public

inter blues getting you down? Wanting to get outside but discouraged by the cold and snow and ice? Looking for a winter adventure but don’t have the gear or the expertise? Luckily you live in Ogden, UT and have access to Weber State’s Outdoor Program. This university-run program is unique in that students at Weber State take courses and are trained to be the guides for the general public.

Since 2008, Weber State’s Outdoor Program has secured a Guide and Outfitter Permit. While students are putting their classroom learning to use with hands-on experience, the general public can take advantage of guided outdoor adventures at a much lower price compared to similar commercial adventures throughout the state.

Weber State’s Outdoor Program offers two types of outdoor adventure experiences. For individuals who are a little bit more independent and who don’t require as much custom attention, the Adventure Program may suit your needs. A calendar found on the Weber State Outdoor website is filled with a variety of adventures that you can pick and choose from depending on your availability and interests.

For those with more specific needs and goals, or planning an excursion for a group of people, the Custom Guided adventures are meant for you. Whether you have an idea of what you want to accomplish with your group, or if you just want to get out into nature, the Weber State student guides can help you create the perfect outing for your group. From December through March the guided tours include cross-country skiing, backcountry skiing and snowshoeing. Descriptions and pricing are found on the website. However, the tours can be very customizable, and the cost can vary depending on your specific needs and wants. For example, if you provide your own transportation for your group and/or your own food, the cost per person will go down. Equipment is always provided, as well as a guide for every six participants. As a rule, the more technical the adventure, the more expensive the outing will be.

One of the more popular cross country skiing adventures involves spending several days in the Bloomington Canyon Yurt. This yurt is located in Bear Lake, ID and is a resource available to the Weber State Outdoor program for these types of guided tour adventures. It is also available for anyone to reserve on their own. However, it fills up extremely quickly when reservations open in early November.

Families with children of all ages are welcome on these adventures. The guides will tailor your excursion to your group. Bring along flavored syrups and make snow cones in the backcountry.

Or just let your children experience the beauty and quiet of nature in the wintertime. Get outdoors this season. Turn off the screens. Set the toys aside and take advantage of knowledgeable and well-trained outdoor enthusiasts with the Weber State Outdoor Program.

O-Town’s greatest basketball may be the Beehive state’s greatest.

ho is the greatest basketball player from the state of Utah? This is a question many sports fans in the Beehive state have debated for years, with names like Danny Vranes, Fred Roberts and Byron Scott always being amongst the top names mentioned. But the best player is likely an Ogden native son who is the only Naismith Hall-of-Fame eligible player with over 20,000 points not to be in the hall: Tom Chambers.

Chambers was born in Ogden in 1959 and resided in O-Town for much of his youth, though he and his family ended up moving to Colorado before his first year of high school. In high school, Chambers became one of the greatest high school players in Colorado history. He was a highly recruited player going into college, and decided to return to the Beehive state and enrolled at the University of Utah.

While at Utah, Chambers was paired with center Danny Vranes, and the pair made one of the most dynamic big men duos in college basketball. In his senior season, Chambers was named all-Western Athletic Conference first team and would end up getting drafted eighth overall in the 1981 NBA draft by the San Diego Clippers.

The Clippers in the early 1980s, like throughout most of their franchise’s history, were an injured mess. The team constantly had players out with injuries, or it was making bad trades by sending talented players off for future assets that never panned out. This allowed for the young Chambers to develop more quickly than most would have thought, and he ended up leading the team in scoring as a rookie. Chambers would come in third in rookie of the year voting behind New Jersey’s Buck Williams and Detroit’s Isaiah Thomas.

Despite Chambers’ solid play, the Clippers had another dismal season and won only 17 games and ended up drafting Terry Cummings with the second overall pick. Cummings played the same position as Chambers, but the Clippers paired them together. Chambers’ numbers slightly improved from the season before, but it was clear that this was going to be Cummings’ team. So the Clippers did what they have historically always done, and made a bad trade. They traded Chambers to the Seattle Supersonics for a package that really did not make the team better.

Chambers would struggle a bit his first few years in Seattle as he rotated between being a starter and a sixth man, but by the 1985 season, he found his groove again and averaged over 20 points a game for the first time in his career. In 1987, he would make the all-star game for the first time and would have one of the most memorable games in NBA all-star history. Chambers would fill in as a starter for the injured Ralph Sampson and lead a team consisting of the likes of Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwon and James Worthy to victory over the East squad. Chambers would lead all scorers with 34 points, which at the time was the fifth most

points scored in an all-star game; Chambers would be named MVP of the game.

Following the 1988 season, Chambers found himself as a free agent and ended up embroiling himself in a bit of a controversy. On the first day of free agency, Chambers was one of the most sought-after stars in the NBA. Besides the Sonics the leading candidates to land Chambers were the Phoenix Suns and the Utah Jazz. The Jazz started negotiations as soon as they could and thought they had a deal worked out, only to learn from ESPN the next morning that Chambers had decided to sign with Phoenix.

Chambers’ best seasons came as a member of the Phoenix Suns.

He became the team’s best player and was teamed with guards Kevin Johnson, Dan Majerle and Jeff Hornacek. The Suns saw a lot of regular seasons success but often struggled in the playoffs. In 1990, the Suns did make the Western conference finals but lost to Portland. The following season, with a lot of hype and enthusiasm, the team won 55 games only to lose in the first round to Utah.

It was the ups and downs like this that caused the Suns’ management to decide ultimately to make some much-needed roster moves. In the Summer of 1992, the Suns sent Hornacek and two other players off to the Philadelphia 76ers for Charles Barkley. Barkley played the same position as Chambers and was in his prime, while Chambers was starting to decline. This moved Chambers to the bench, where he took up a sixth man role.

Following the conclusion of the 1993 season, Chambers signed a two-year deal with the Utah Jazz to back up Karl Malone.

His first year with the Jazz was highly successful as the team made the Western finals, and Chambers was seen as a key cog in the team. The second year Chambers began to struggle with age and injuries, and for the first time in his career, he did not average double digits in scoring.

Utah declined to offer the aging Chambers a contract following the 1995 season, which forced Chambers to play in Israel for one season.

Chambers returned to the NBA briefly in 1997, playing 12 games for the Charlotte Hornets. His last year in the NBA would be a one-game stint with the Sixers in 1998.

Following his NBA career, Chambers returned to the Ogden area. He currently runs a ranch in North Ogden called Shooting Star Ranch. He does not believe he will ever be elected into the basketball hall-of-fame, saying that many players of his era did what he did, and he did nothing special. With that said, the numbers do speak for themselves. Chambers scored 20,797 points in the NBA and was a four-time NBA all-star. One day, despite his pessimistic thinking, Chambers will be voted into the Basketball Hall-of-Fame once and for all. l

The Historic 25th Street Association

n the heart of Ogden lies the historic district with a colorful past and rich history. Long gone are the railroad traveling crowds and gangsters. No longer will you find shady business dealings and questionable citizens. This area has evolved over the years into an amazing hub full of art galleries, fine dining, local shops and a taste of Ogden’s diverse culture.

The Historic 25th Association was formed to further the expansion and protect the direction this beloved area will take as it evolves throughout the years. The Association is divided into two entities: The Historic 25th Street Association, and The Historic 25th Street Foundation.

The Historic 25th Street Association is a 501c6 , or a business league. It is made up of paying members who come together for

business strengthening opportunities such as co-op marketing, place and destination branding and those who preserve and further promote the street.

The second entity, The Historic 25th Street Foundation, is a 501c3. This entity is largely in charge of organizing and putting on events such as the Harvest Moon Festival, Witchstock, etc. This entity’s priority is giving back to the community, providing opportunities for engagement and increasing community vibrancy, while at the same time preserving and protecting the historic nature of the street.

Both organizations are completely volunteer based, with the exception of a part-time director and a paid marketing consultant. Both of these associations are making changes for the future

and transitioning a lot of the organizations ‘structure to better suit the street and community alike.

In a future issue of The Ogden Source, we will look into these changes and what it means to our city, how it will affect the current state of commerce and how it will alter the interaction between business owners and patrons who visit this district, as well as explore the history and past of the association. l

Strengthening Families through Successful Employment

ingle parents, including thousands of Utah women, are frequently considered among the “working poor.” People Helping People, a local non-profit program with an office here in Ogden and headquartered in Salt Lake City, coaches moms to become self-sufficient. “It’s a handup, not a handout,” quoted a program participant.

Judy Kasten Bell, program manager, whose career of working with nonprofits benefitting women and children works with LeAnn Dickerson, program coordinator conducting workshops, interviewing potential clients and mentors, and running the local office. After the success of the program of over 22 years in Salt Lake City, Kayleen Simmons, founder and director said, “Ogden was the next logical place to help. With startup grant funding, it is possible with the cooperation of other nonprofits, including YCC and Cottages of Hope.”

Representatives from Kroger and Hill AFB are companies who recently presented job opportunities to the PHP groups. Bell statesd that, “The mission of People Helping People is to reduce the number of children living in poverty by teaching low-income women, primarily single mothers, how to earn an adequate income through stable employment that pays a living wage.” Unemployment is low in Utah, which creates challenges. “Our program teaches clients how to create a path to adequate income, eliminating the need for public assistance.”

People Helping People is the only agency providing long-term employment training and one-on-one mentoring and coaching to teach critical life and employment skills that allow women to help themselves.

The focus is on education and learning. Clients are mentored throughout the process, even after landing a job. “Getting a job is great, but keeping it and navigating the workforce for some can be even more challenging.

The goal is getting the right job with the right employer with benefits, training and opportunity for advancement, which is a more careerdriven goal.” According to Bell, “People looking for information about their program have typically taken a job just for the sake of getting a job.

Our coaches can freely share their knowledge and experience dealing with real workplace issues and illustrate solutions derived from their own successful, stable work histories.”

“Our clients get the help they need to build important skills, and their children can then see their parent modeling actions needed for successful employment, and that helps everyone. Many of our mentors are successful, retired executives who want to give back. So if there are any out there who would like to share in their success, we could use them!”

Every client is expected to participate in the coaching and mentoring part of the program. Requirements include: having a GED or high school diploma, the ability to read, write and speak English, the legal right to work in the USA, and complete their workbook homework. Two large job fairs are held in Salt Lake City.

In Weber County, meetings are held Wednesday mornings at the YCC and evenings at Cottages of Hope. Incentives for attendees emphasize that “showing up is half the battle of success.” Expungement is a barrier that can be overcome. “We have partners who work with clients on getting certain charges expunged,” says Bell. Through the partnership with Cottages of Hope and other groups, action plans and progress reports encourage clients.

People Helping People is currently seeking clients and mentors, and their biggest need is cash. Many clients have food stamps, but many don’t realize that shampoo, hygiene and non-food items do not qualify for that assistance. With your help, each single mother transitioning from welfare to self-sufficiency saves our community up to $20,000 annually.

Talisman Brewing Co.

I

n 1954, Becker’s Brewing Co. shut its doors after large macrobreweries entered Ogden and forced the close of the long-standing local business. That was 61 years ago, and no microbrewery has existed in the city since. With Talisman Brewing Co., Dusty and Joann Williams have changed that.

Before starting the company, Dusty had an enduring passion for home brewing. He was able to commit himself fully to his craft after retiring from the Air Force. Joann shares her husband’s enthusiasm for unique, quality beers, and has an extensive background in marketing and HR management, which she now uses to benefit their endeavor.

Together they make a powerful duo, and are excited to share their fullflavored craft beers with the community.

Their beers range from 4.0% - 10% alcohol by volume, and they offer a variety of styles, which they brew using quality ingredients and traditional techniques. The current offerings have a running Celtic theme, creative names, and impressive designs, which Joann tells me

were inspired by Dusty’s Celtic roots.

After securing a location in the fall of 2014, Dusty and Joann have worked to expand their company to provide their services to the public.

Residents can look forward to purchasing their product on-site and at local restaurants by February, and they have plans to expand further and open a small restaurant that would serve as a tasting room. They will also be giving tours that will highlight their methods and provide tastings: an intriguing draw, which no other brewery offers at this time.

Their endeavor and classification as a packaging industry is unique from other Ogden breweries in a number of ways, and comes with benefits. One of many perks is that, when the restaurant side opens, they’ll be able to serve high point beer direct from their facility, even on Sunday.

Weber State Grad Helps Homeless Moms Turn Excess Produce Into Unique and Delicious Jams

I O-Town Kitchen started this year after founder Isaac Farley said he felt led to devote his life to the Ogden community. The nonprofit turns food pantry donations into their popular jam, and into jobs for homeless moms.

saac Farley worked in a church soup kitchen and noticed the same faces in line week after week. He felt called to do more. “O-Town was my idea, and this whole thing started when I became an Evangelical Christian and God called me to devote my life to community work in Ogden City,” he said. His studies at Weber State and a summer program gave him what he needed to start O-Town Kitchen, a nonprofit that employs homeless moms who make and sell delicious jam made with excess produce.

First he saw how much food was wasted.

“Annually we waste 161.6 BILLION dollars worth of edible food. That is enough money to pay rent for 18 million homeless people for one year, or to pay tuition for 37,000 bachelor’s degrees.” He thought, “if we could get the value of food that is being thrown away into the pockets of people in emergency situations, then we could make a huge impact.”

The then Weber State student studied social design at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City last summer in a residency program called Impact: Design for Social Change. “The goal of the program is to give people working creative fields the tools to attack social problems using their unique

creative approach to problem solving,” he said.

While researching for his class, he uncovered some unsettling trends. The last three Utah Comprehensive Reports on Homelessness showed that families are the biggest growing part of the homeless population in Utah. Families make up about 45 percent of Utah’s total homeless and 77 percent of those homeless families are women with children. The O-Town Kitchen addresses these issues with donated food that would be thrown away.

The O-town Kitchen opened on May 28, 2015 and now employs two homeless parents.

Besides the employees, Farley works on O-Town full time. His business partner Nestor Robles and friend Raymond Espino help out too.

“We are funded through sales; the sales we make pays for supplies and pays the folks we work with. Local food pantries give produce that is left over after their weekly food giveaways. We turn that produce into jams, jellies and marmalades with out-of-thisworld flavors, like our famous tomatillo and lime jam.” Anyone who wants to support the organization can order jam online or at local businesses. l

The Ogden Source is starting the year off right with a multi-talented artist who calls Ogden his home. Chris Kiernan’s artistic focus has not settled on one style of media. He flows and expands to meet his evolving areas of inspiration. Sitting down and getting to know him has revealed some art we have all seen in our travels in Ogden.

OS: Are you a native to Ogden?

CK: I am. I grew up in So. Ogden but now own a home north of 12th Street.

OS: What was your first memory of creating art in your life?

CK: I had an opportunity to attend a summer art program at Weber High School the summer after sixth grade.

OS: What areas or mediums of art do you gravitate toward and/or participate in?

CK: Photography and filming. Graffiti art, hand-painted pinstriping, graphic design work for MOR skateboards and stencil art for O-Town Grip. But really, art influences all these areas for me.

OS: You have had a busy year, but what are some more recent projects you have been a part of and some things people may have seen and not realized are not yours?

CK: June of this year was a big month for me personally as I started MOR skateboards and O-Town Grip. MOR released three skateboard graphics and ten grip designs. I have had photos published in both Slug magazine and Arkade Snowboard Magazine. I participated in all four rounds of the Ogden52 project. You can currently see some street art work at Lucky Slice, Moore’s Barber Shop and Pizza Runner on Harrison BLVD. (The skater and the “O-Town” lettering are mine. The beautiful woman is the work of Rich Ramos.)

OS: Where else can people find you and your work? And what does the future hold?

CK: On social media I can be found @_chriskiernan_ and the skate brands @morskateboards and @otowngrip. MOR skateboards is a large focus right now with some new and collaborative designs set to be released the end of January. I am always watching for ways to creating new opportunities in the local skate community. Later this year, there are some possibilities to participate in some new mural work in Ogden City, although this project is still in the planning phases. I will always be creating something. I am lucky to live in a city that encourages and accepts the diverse community of artists.

New World Distillery Brings Classic Spirits to the Ogden Valley

ew World Distillery is an Eden-based craft distillery founded by Christopher and Ashley Cross, two long-time Utah residents with a passion for agave spirits and gin. In early 2016 they will open their doors with a line of super-premium agave spirits, gin and vodka.

One of the things that is immediately apparent about NWD is their incredible focus on doing things the right way. The NWD team has spent years traveling to various countries to study at different distilling schools, sourcing materials as locally as possible, joining various projects and groups to both learn and spread awareness of sustainable agriculture, purchasing a fully recirculating cooling system, and aggressively supporting local causes.

Chris stated, “We prioritize our local community, both as citizens and as a business.” When asked why the local focus was important and how it set New World apart from other distilleries, Chris broke down three separate areas of focus that are part of the company ethos.

SUSTAINABILITY: Since NWD primary product lines use agave as the raw ingredient, they have become active in researching and supporting efforts to move agave sustainability forward. They have joined the Tequila Interchange Project, studied with Dr. Ivan Saldaña Oyarzábal, a well-regarded expert in the industry who holds a doctorate in the agave, and will be providing on-site tours in which customers will be educated on “unique strains on the plant’s longevity and the importance of supporting sustainable agriculture.”

LOCAL: As agave is local to New World, and more specifically, mostly in the Jalisco region, NWD has partnered with a local supplier who has part ownership of a production plant there. Further, their Reposado and Anejo spirits are going to be aged in bourbon barrels provided by Kirby, WY company Wyoming Whiskey, another craft distiller. Barrel

aging has a significant effect on the finished flavor, so this was not a decision to be made lightly. NWD has also arranged to have vodka and gin grains mashed by a local brewery, with gin botanicals and juniper berries sourced locally as well. They believe this will add art and quality to what is described as a “renaissance” for gin by Chris. Art for NWD bottles and gear has also been sourced from local artists.

For being a new company with product still at the pre-release stage, NWD has an extensive and very impressive roster of local groups they are involved with including, but not limited to, Ogden Valley Business Association, Board of Directors, Visit Ogden/Visit Ogden Valley, Nurture the Creative Mind, Women’s Retreat House and The Lantern House/St. Anne’s. They are also sponsors of the Ogden Nature Center, Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of N. Utah and the OVBA Fundraising Golf Tournament.

GREEN: NWD are very proud to be responsible stewards of natural resources. Chris states that they “are adopting green processes and presenting them with 100% transparency to the public. Because it’s the right thing to do, first of all, and secondly, it is especially important to the sensitive nature of natural resources in the Ogden Valley.”

Most distilleries run their waste water down the drain for many hours a day. NWD will re-use every drop of cooling water with a 100% recirculating system that is neither cheap, nor quick, but rather the best option for the environment. They have also addressed manufacturing zoning challenges by incorporating a custom wastewater evaporator into their process, the result being no process water added to the septic systems and only a small amount of solid organic waste. Chris mentioned that they were also researching solar power as a future option. l

Jan. 7, 2016: Multicultural Youth Conference 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of Weber State University’s Multicultural Youth Conference. With a theme of “You Have A Dream”, students from ninth grade to 12th will be offered the opportunity to listen to speakers and participate in workshops on gender and ethnic identity. A keynote speaker and multicultural student and community performances will also be available, along with diversity and leadership workshops. Information about how WSU can help students meet their goals will be available. The event is to be held in the Shepherd Union Building from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

January 18, 2016: Martin Luther King Freedom Breakfast and March Observances of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day are common throughout the country, and Ogden is no exception. Starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, Ogdenites can participate in a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy.

The day begins with breakfast at the Marshall White Center (222 28th St.), followed by a reenactment of the March on Washington, a program to honor the holiday and opportunities for community service. All events are free and open to the public.

he 16th Annual WSU Gospel Music Festival will take place on Friday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts Austad Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.

The theme this year is “Make a Joyful Noise! Food for the Soul.” Those attending are asked to bring a non-perishable food item with them to donate to the Weber Cares Food Pantry (Weber State University Food Pantry).

This theme was chosen to shine a positive light for the WSU and surrounding communities as we continue to face adversity. Music brings about a sense of unity through its universal language. This family-friendly event provides an opportunity for everyone to come together in a positive way and celebrate this festive occasion.

Performances will include the WSU Concert Choir, WSU ROTC Choir, Kids Are Music, Genesis Group LDS Gospel Choir and others. The goal of the festival is to unite and educate people through inspiring gospel music - music rooted in the spiritual messages and oral histories shared during the time of slavery.

The first WSU Gospel Music Festival was presented in 2000, as part of community participation in “Wade in the Water: African-American Sacred Music Traditions,” a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institute at Ogden’s Union Station. The exhibit examined how the musical legacy of slavery and the worship practices of Black churches contributed to African American heritage and became a worldwide cultural force.

Ogden’s Mrs. Betty Stewart Moore was charged with organizing a local “Gospel Music Extravaganza,” which she coordinated with the Weber State University Department of Performing Arts. Mrs. Moore, now deceased, was honored at the 2013 Festival for her vision of recreating the grand musical extravaganzas she had experienced throughout her life.

The first concert was so popular with the local audience that it became an annual tradition every year since, excluding the 2002 Winter Olympics. WSU Performing Arts was the presenter for several years before it was shared and finally turned over to the WSU Diversity Center, and then directed by Keith Wilder.

Over the years, churches from Ogden to Salt Lake City have fielded choirs in the festival. In addition, individual soloists and ensembles have brought their talents to the stage.

Often, a liturgical dance ensemble has been included, showing one more way gospel music can be celebrated. Kids Are Music have always been a popular group, as well as the WSU Concert Choir, and they are both included in this year’s production.

Throughout the evening, the audience will be invited to participate in some of the numbers, either in a call-and-respond format, joining in on the chorus, clapping hands in rhythm, or

in other ways that the director or lead singer will describe. Few people can resist the impulse to join in, and sometimes it is hard to stay seated. Whether this is a family tradition or a first time experience, most do not remain unenthused.

Teresa Martinez, Diversity & Inclusive Programs coordinator, is the current producer of the festival, in the tradition of Keith Wilder and the following Diversity Center director, Adrienne Andrews. She said, “The festival is dedicated to all those who perform, to all those who play, to all those with a song in their soul or the hope to capture one. Anything is possible when we come together!”

Lighthouse Lounge Gets Lyrical with Poet Flow

he Lighthouse Lounge on Historic 25th Street has long been a landmark in this fair city. Lately however, Tuesday nights have taken a turn for the lyrical with Tuesday Night Poet Flow.

Created by cousins Janica and Kase Johnstun, Poet Flow is a two hour weekly open mic event giving local writers a space to experiment and share their work. The room started to fill up about 10 minutes before seven, and by the time the first reader hit the stage there was a sizeable crowd of about twenty people filing in, some of whom were there to read, while others had simply come in to drink and socialize but found a place in the audience.

Having the event in a bar makes it unique from most other spaces where writers can share their work; the audience is comprised of exclusively adults, making participants feel free to share thoughts and speak on topics they might not at a coffee shop or library. It also means you can get a little bit of creative lubricant to squash the stage fright and lends itself to an organic social gathering afterward, where people discuss their thoughts and impressions without judgement. In all, it makes for the perfect place for amateur writers to practice their craft.

Robert Frost said, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” There was plenty of emotion to go around on Tuesday night and an equal amount of support. Each presentation was met with applause and pats on the back and drinks were bought and shared along with personal musings.

Despite the diverse crowd, many of whom weren’t there for the event, not a negative

word was heard, unless it was on the stage and directed at a social plight or personal struggle, never at an individual. Contrary to the name of the event, some people read their own work, others read their favorite poets, while some read short stories or non-fiction.

“This isn’t limited to poetry; people can read whatever they want,” said Janica Johnstun.

“I rarely read poetry, it’s usually micro-fiction or non-fiction,” Kase Johnstun added.

Kase and Janica Johnstun began Poet Flow the first Tuesday in September after having met for the first time in adulthood and finding a mutual love of poetry and a need for this kind of space in Ogden.

“Ogden needs this. I think Ogden has this grit of a city that produces art. Some people go read at the university, but you may have to be invited or find that environment intimidating.

That doesn’t happen here,” said Kase Johnstun.

The weekly event has no agenda other than to be a safe space for writers. The creators as well as participants remarked on how much they’ve enjoyed having the space and their intent to keep it going as long as possible.

“We just want people to know that we’ll be here every week and that we’d love to have them,” said Janica Johnstun.

Stephen King has said that you should first write with the door closed and rewrite with the door open. Poet Flow provides the perfect open door space to get feedback or just share your work. If this sounds like something you’ve been looking for, bring your work or just your ears and a good attitude and you’ll be welcome. Tuesday Night Poet Flow happens every week starting at 7:00 p.m. l

Jonali Sorensn’s acoustic guitar and vocals mix with Fish’s trombone and beatboxing to form a captivating sound, which has been described as “eclectic, transcendental, unique, futuristic, progressive, powerful, passionate and insightful.” It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what style they are, and Jonali rightfully hesitates to give it any one label, but the music could possibly be described as a bit of shoegaze, a bit of hip-hop, with an experimental alternative/indie vibe.

Brought together by a mutual lifelong love of music, they’ve been playing together for six years and are well-acquainted with the Ogden music scene. The band says that during their time here, they’ve enjoyed watching the community grow and thrive, and have noticed a transformation. Their debut album, Giant, was released in July, and in the song ‘Psychonauts,’ Jonali writes about “how it feels to grow up [in Utah], outside of the Mormon Church.” A few other topics tackled in the insightful compilation, which was produced by Chris Aguilar and tracked at Studio 14 by Rich Bischoff, include society and culture, love, rejection. “The normal stuff,’ said Jonali.

Their reach extends beyond Ogden, and both artists are versatile, with Fish performing in another Ogden-based band, Shaky Trade, as well as Salt Lake band, Wasatch. For their next project, they’ll be doing some shake-ups on the instruments and releasing a hip-hop EP, which can be expected out sometime this winter.

Although their live shows consist of Fish using a looping machine and dubbing his beatboxing, the band never sounds completely electronic, and they describe their music as “organic.” Currently, they’re preparing to embark on a tour of the Western states in March, but if you’d like to check them out in the home state, they’ll be playing a show at Apres Ski in Park City on Jan. 16.
