CROSSING GUARD JUMPS INTO ACTION DURING GAS LEAK Byline

WOODS CROSS—The principal of Woods Cross Elementary and the crossing guard supervisor received accolades from the police department and city council for their quick response to a gas leak near the school last month.

“A contractor was installing a waterline for the city and hit a gas line at 1500 S. 675 West,” said Woods Cross Public Works Director Sam Christiansen. “They couldn’t easily fix it because it was an older section so it took two to three and a half hours to repair.”

The school crossing was closed to all traffic, he said. “The crossing guards working that area made sure the kids were safe. The principal went above and beyond. He got a bus and rode with the kids because most of the kids don’t use a bus.”

Stephanie (Olsen) is a crossing guard supervisor and an assistant in special education here, said Principal Buck Ekstrom. “When she heard the news she came in and said ‘hey there’s a gas leak, so I’m changing the crossing guards in that area.’”

There are a lot of students who walk on 1500 South and under the overpass to the Springwood Apartments, etc., he said. “We needed to find a way to get them home safely. They couldn’t go to 500 South so we called (district) transportation and told them we needed a bus. They said, ‘OK, we’ll send one over.’”

Baby chicks a favorite at Easter time

N

othing says the coming of spring like a clutch of fluff-ball chicks huddled together. So innocent and new that they can imprint on any gentle human who feeds, cuddles or dresses them up in cutup socks. Some traditionally put these harbingers of new life in an Easter basket, but the best choice is to get your chicks as early as possible in the spring so that they are laying eggs by late summer.

The Rockin E Country Store in Wood Cross has their sign up in front: Chicks are here! The chick season is in full swing and will continue until early May. Do you want the little red hen (Rhode Island Reds) or a black Heihei (meaning chicken in Maori)? You can choose the ever-reliable Barred Plymouth Rock that lays a whopping 280 eggs a year or go with the Easter Egger (Americauna) that may lay blue or green colored eggs. The variety available is incredible. Within four months of purchasing a peep of chicks, they will become a brood of hens laying typically three-five eggs per week. Unless you provide more light and heat inside the coop, the hens will usually take a break from laying in the low-light winter months. Hens lay eggs prolifically for a few years and then slow down or even stop in later years. Getting a few one spring and a few more a couple of years later will optimize egg laying. Eggs become larger as the hens mature – much larger than grocery store eggs. Chickens need other chickens, so buy at least three chicks to start. Both NSL and Woods Cross allow a small flock of hens with no rooster, and you may visit the city office for more information and to purchase a permit. Buying chicks at the Country Store comes with a guarantee that the chicks are female – much superior to hatching eggs in an incubator where roughly half of the chicks will grow up to be early-morning-crowing roosters with territorial-protective instincts which make them less-than-desirable pets. Sexing chicks is not an exact science, so it is possible to end up with a rooster from the store that you can return when you realize it looks and sounds different than the hens. To avoid this possibility, look for chicks that are huddled submissively together and avoid

the chick on its own patrolling the outskirts of the pen. To be absolutely sure your chick will grow into a hen, choose a sex-link breed where the color of the chick indicates sex. Be sure to come home with a bag of chick starter feed which is ideal for the rapidly growing needs of your flock.

All you need for the first several weeks of a chick’s life is a heat source (a desk lamp with a less-efficient lightbulb) and box filled with dirt, leaves, wood chips or paper. Garden dirt is preferred, because if occasionally moistened, the micro-organisms in the dirt process waste and keep the smell down. The chicks also love to scratch around in loose material to peck for their dinner. Chickens will eat almost anything, and it can be fun to provide a lettuce leaf, a piece of popcorn or another treat for your peep to enjoy. As your flock ages they prefer leftovers to their own feed: potato peels, jack-o-lanterns after Halloween, or those dishes that have just been in the fridge too long. Bushels of falls leaves placed in the run in the fall leads to layers of incredibly fertile soil in the spring.

After about six weeks, the chicks can begin to explore outside to harden them a bit. Shortly after this, a coop with a run will be required. A coop has a perch and a nesting box and ideally will be small enough to trap chicken heat as they roost at night and in the winter. The run is a larger outdoor area with a fence that protects the flock from predators and protects your yard from the flock. Chickens scratch, dig nests and eat bugs and plants which may not be appreciated, for example, in a newly planted bed of edible pansies. With a secure run and easy-to-clean coop, a flock of chicken have personality enough to entertain most any backyard enthusiast. With the rising cost of groceries, a pet that provides food should be considered. Home produced eggs have brighter colored yolks signifying 20 times more healthful omega 3s as well as other nutritional advantages over mass-produced eggs. Since chickens adore grass clipping, backyard eggs could possibly be considered grass fed. l

Small business owner shares treasures for all

“T

his has become way bigger than I ever dreamed it would be when I started this crazy venture 22 years ago,” Simple Treasures Boutique owner, Jennie Thacker, said of her business.

“I discovered over time that I had a talent for organizing and planning,” said Thacker. “In 2000, I volunteered to run Ogden city’s 4th of July Celebration, which included a boutique. I loved it and wanted more!”

That fall, her first boutique opened its doors in Ogden. “It was small, only about 1,000 square feet,” said Thacker. “This year, after 22 years of many ups and downs and thanks to our loyal and wonderful supporters we will open our doors to 40,000 square feet of locally handmade décor, gifts, yummy treats and more.”

Thacker’s college degree was in childhood education and family studies. “I never expected to go into business, but I grew into this and loved it,” she said. “As a little girl, I have many fond memories of attending boutiques with my mom. It was the best tradition! We would go and browse through all the booths and I remember being in awe of all the beautiful, handmade things. We always came home with chocolate and many years later, that hasn’t changed!”

Starting a business is not for the faint of heart, said Thacker. “During the early years, there were times that we were barely keeping our heads above water, and we were so lucky that our amazing vendors were patient with us when we had shows that just didn’t go well,” she said. “At the time, my children were very little and boutique weeks were hard on everyone. It was difficult to balance it all and we all made many sacrifices. But overall, I have loved running a small business. It has been so rewarding to be able to become a stay-athome mom. That was a huge goal for me.”

Thacker said about 90% of the vendors are women-run businesses (thanks to many supportive husbands) and about 90% of the customers are also women. “My favorite thing to see is how many fun girls’ trips happen here. They laugh, they cry and they shop till they drop! Shopping therapy is a real thing! I love to see the sparkle and excitement in the customers’ eyes as they enter.”

There are many loyal customers who haven’t missed a show in years, even traveling long distances to get to the boutique, she said. “We’ll often get five generations of women coming in together. I love that we have created a place where so many fond memories take place.”

A very unique thing about Simple Treasures is that it runs on a central checkout, said Thacker. “Our Point of Sale system was custom-made by our son TJ. It has

allowed us to handle long lines of customers with a short wait. Customers can shop through over 180 booths and pay for everything all together at the end. This means vendors can set up their boutiques and head out, if needed.”

Over the years they’ve amassed the best and brightest artists from all over the state and beyond, she said. “I love seeing our vendors go from a small business to bigger businesses and giving them a space to grow. They are so talented, hard-working, and supportive of each other. I am so blessed to work with so many great people.”

One of the biggest challenges to date was 2020. “Most boutiques were canceled due to the pandemic, but we are proud to say that we fought through all the red tape and hosted six events that year,” said Thacker.

“Many of our vendors count on these events to help support their families. We were so lucky to have customers who showed up in full support, despite COVID. I had many vendors, thanking me afterwards with tears in their eyes because they were able to make some much needed income. Many customers came up to thank me as well. It was healing, at the time, for all of us to get to do something normal during the start of such an abnormal time.”

“I think success is loving what you do and I have loved this experience from start to finish,” she said. “I even still get to shop with my mom sometimes. It’s so satisfying to have created a space where so many fun traditions and fond memories continue to be created. Here’s to another fun year of Simple Treasures and many more to come!”

A look back at Davis County’s railroad – The Bamberger

B

efore there was a FrontRunner, or a TRAX light rail system, or any other regular form of public transportation in Davis County, there was the Bamberger Railroad. In its heyday, it stretched from Salt Lake City to Ogden, connecting cities in Davis County, carrying passengers to and from Lagoon, and paving the way, figuratively at least, for many of the roads we use as drivers today.

According to the UtahRails.net website, the Bamberger Railroad got its start in 1891 as the Great Salt Lake & Hot Springs Railway, building northward from the west side of Salt Lake City, near the Union Pacific depot. The railroad was owned (mostly) by Simon Bamberger, using financial resources from his interests in coal and metal mines.

The company completed its line to Beck’s Hot Springs later in 1891, and continued on to Bountiful in less than a year.

Centerville was reached in 1894, and Farmington in 1895. About that time, Bamberger, who was vice president and co-owner of a resort called Lake Park on the shores of the Great Salt Lake that would close in 1895 due to the lake’s receding, bought most of the original resort buildings from the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and moved them three miles east to a swampy area in Farmington that he drained. There, he built the Lagoon Amusement Park to provide a destination for travelers on his railway.

Bamberger continued to expand his rails north, reaching Kaysville and Layton in 1906 and eventually Ogden in 1908. His steam locomotives were filled with passengers and freight, and larger cars were added.

He also explored the use of electric trains, eventually adding them to his company.

Though it was still the Salt Lake & Ogden Railway officially, it was locally called “the Bamberger,” and in August 1917, the name was officially changed. That was also the year Simon Bamberger was elected Utah’s governor as the Progressive Party candidate.

But over the next 10-15 years, things changed. Public roadways were expanding, allowing trucking companies the same access to businesses that Bamberger was serving for freight transportation. Bus companies were also using those roadways, siphoning off passengers from the railway. Bamberger died in October 1926 at the age of 81, but his company carried on, though with challenges.

By 1933, the “electric” part of Bamberger’s operation was declaring bankruptcy, and the business was reorganized in 1939. It owned 84 freight cars, four freight locomotives, 29 passenger cars, two express cars, a line work car and two buses. The company also purchased five high-speed streamlined cars that could travel up to 75 miles per hour.

match between need and ability. But things changed as the war ended. By the early 1950s, the company was struggling to make ends meet, even as it tried switching its passenger business from rail cars to buses. By mid 1952, with buses now traveling daily between Salt Lake City and Ogden, the company ended its passenger train operation. The last one traveled on Sept. 6, 1952.

History books show that Bamberger

Railroad continued as a freight-only company until all operations ceased on Dec. 31, 1958. The Salt Lake Tribune published on New Year’s Day 1959 said “the Bamberger Railroad operated its last freight train into Ogden, and returned to Salt Lake City later that night. One of the crew remarked, ‘All along the way from Salt Lake City to Ogden, almost at every stop, were one or two freight cars to pick up, giving us a string of 20 cars

by the time we pulled into Ogden.’ With the return to Salt Lake City on Wednesday night [Dec. 31, 1958] the line became the property of Union Pacific and Denver and Rio Grande Western companies.”

passed into history. Bamberger had operated its final trains between Salt Lake City and Ogden, with the last southbound train on Wednesday, Dec. 31 picking up empty coal cars at Smith Milling, and empty boxcars being picked up at Bountiful station which brought the last load of new automobiles to Bountiful.”

The railway’s “right of way” into Davis County began near Beck Street and ran north. Its North Salt Lake Shop Complex was located just west of where The Pointe at Northridge sits, and its North Salt Lake Depot was west of Highway 89 and south of Center St. It then went north and became parallel to Highway 89, eventually running west of that road, crossing over 500 West on the viaduct that’s still in use for cars. Its route became the path for 300 West and then 200 West as it traveled to 400 North in Bountiful. Bountiful Light and Power’s office on 200 West sits at the site where a warehouse once stood, with the train station in front of it. From there, it swung east through what is now part of Bountiful City Park, then Viewmont High School, and continued north through Centerville and Farmington between about 200 West and Main Street. For a few years, a street in Centerville had a painted “railroad track” to mark the route, though that’s no longer present.

runs from Davinci Lane (about 200 South 160 West) north to about Parrish Lane.

Memories remain, but not much else.

Though most of the route has now been developed, you can still see portions of the right of way in places, with the spur between Ogden and Hill Air Force Base, now owned by the Union Pacific Railroad, the only remaining part still used in regular rail operations.l The route of Bamberger Railroad ran through the heart of Davis County in its heyday. Sundance challenge seeks young filmmakers

he Sundance Institute is teaming up with Adobe to find the next group of Sundance Ignite x Adobe Fellows – emerging filmmakers ages 18 to 25. They are looking for those who want to take their careers to the next level.

Called the 2022 Sundance Ignite x Adobe Short Film Challenge, it runs through March 14. Filmmakers can submit their short films to be considered for a year-long fellowship there they’ll receive mentoring, unique resources and a chance to attend the 2023 Sundance Film Festival with the fellowship cohort.

“We’re holding a short film challenge, asking filmmakers to submit a one- to 15-minute short that shows us their artistic vision and unique voice,” said Sylvy Fernandez from the Sundance Institute.

She said submissions are not limited to any genre or topic. Applicants will include materials in support of a new project that

they intend to work on throughout the fellowship.

The fellowship begins with a weeklong digital lab orienting filmmakers to the fellowship and year ahead. strating the Red Cross’ commitment to train and empower future humanitarian leaders in our communities,” said Kristy Denlein, Regional Volunteer Services Officer. “We believe the students will find the camp a special place where they can be themselves, take safe risks, and be a part of something bigger than themselves.”

The overnight camp is for local students currently in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade or the home school equivalent. The cost of the non-profit camp is $250 and includes cabin lodging at Camp Pinecliff, meals, and materials. A reduced rate is available for those who qualify. The camp will have COVID-19 safety protocols in place.

Throughout the week, Red Cross youth volunteers and staff members will create sessions and activities that reinforce delegates’ individual and team leadership skills.

acing thoughts, indecisiveness, fear, and despair are common denominators of what went through parents’ students’ and school personnel’s minds on Dec.17, 2021. Another infamous TikTok school challenge was in the books. This time, the “National Shoot Up Your School Day” trend.

The night before, on Dec. 16, parents stormed into Facebook groups such as Kaysville Moms and Weber/Davis County Moms, to share their fears and decisions. Some moms were in favor of keeping kids at home “just in case.” “It is never worth the risk,” a mom commented. Another mother said that it broke her heart listening to her seventh grader “telling me he and his friends planned escape routes.”

The trend shared on TikTok consisted of encouraging students to bring weapons into the school and commit violence. Before that day, some schools sent emails notifying parents and caregivers about the TikTok challenge.

Principals assured them the threats were not to be found credible and were unsustained. However, some schools opted for canceling classes and starting the winter break a day earlier.

Also, schools allowed the parents to have the choice to keep their kids at home or send them to school. A large number of children and teens refused to go to school that day, fearing for their lives – those students who had no choice but to go due to parents having to work presented anxiety. Many were on the lookout for something out of the ordinary.

In some schools, especially those with many students and high schools, the atmosphere was heavy and uneasy.

Ashley Wright Kailipalauli said that her girls, aged 15 and 17, “had a lot of questions and also had a lot to say.” So she and her husband held a conversation to explain the situation. She added that “It was a great conversation to be had. Very scary times that need to be talked about!”

According to Education Week magazine, in 2021, there were a total of 34 school shootings, and 64 people were killed or injured. As a result of previous experiences, panic and consternation are valid feelings. But even if police found those threats to be improbable and unfounded, no parent wants or should receive the excruciating news that their child has been killed in school.

Some parents commented on social media that TikTok must be brought down. Others stated that social media platforms are not the problem; that it goes further and more profound than a social media app. If children are willing to terrorize their classmates and teachers to become popular in a social media app, then the problem is deep-rooted.

School leaders agree that parents must exercise an active role in their children’s lives. If therapy is considered, costs are a factor, as a therapy session goes from $130 up to $300 or

even more. The bitter reality is that even if parents are aware that their children have a mental illness and flirt with thoughts of hurting others, they cannot afford such extravagant prices. As a result, parents are not prepared to help their children. Furthermore, the community also plays a vital role in children’s and teenagers’ mental health. Perhaps more entertainment places must be created, such as parks with access to sports courts. Instead, community sports are raising their prices as well as state parks.

Parents must lock their guns and never allow children or teenagers to have access to them without their supervision. In the households of children struggling with suicidal ideation or thoughts of harming others, guns must be prohibited. Having a gun is a responsibility, not a game. Therefore, they must be handled with caution, and children and teens ought to be educated about their handling and the harm they can cause.

There are no easy answers to the questions on how to prevent school shootings. Nevertheless, until the community as a whole get together and work together to better children’s lives and demand the government for its acting role, nothing can in reality be achieved or improved. l

Woods Cross High takes Gold in Battle for Olympus

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com WOODS CROSS—It’s not just Olympians who took Gold in February. Woods Cross High School’s Academic Olympiad team took its place on the podium by taking first in the Battle for Olympus challenge at the Academic Olympiad event held at Utah State University last month.

“It was very exciting,” said Advisor Jaden Stewart. “It was the first year any of the kids participated in it because last year they didn’t hold it because of COVID.” The team is made up of nine students, she said. “There’s a mix of juniors and seniors. Usually we’ve had more seniors but this year it’s about half and half. If they do it as juniors they’ll usually do it as seniors as well.”

The Olympiad starts with a written test in the morning, said Stewart. “It covers history, English, social studies, math, etc. then Battle for Olympus which is a team trivia challenge.”

Students are invited to be on the team, she said. “ACT scores are one of the big factors we look at because the test is more difficult than the ACT. We also look at the classes they’ve taken, the level of math and AP classes, students we feel are really well prepared to do well on the test and trivia.”

ticipated in the event for the first time. “It was really nice to be recognized by USU,” he said. “There’s a lot of emphasis on sports so it was cool to get recognition in academia.”

Trivia was impossible to prepare for because the questions are random, Marx said. “Reading over what I’ve learned over the years was helpful. For the written test I studied like I did for the ACT because it’s structured like that. I’m kind of into math and science so I had prior knowledge.”

“We prepared Wednesday mornings during late start,” said junior Rex Green.

“We studied questions from past Olympiads, current events and went over the ACT. The test is a lot harder than the ACT or SAT.” It was very, very fun but stressful, he said. “You couldn’t rely on anyone else. It was cool to apply what I’ve learned from other classes and talk to people from other schools who have common interests.”

“I know some people were nervous,” said Marx. “I’m an extrovert by nature so I was pretty relaxed and not too nervous. Beloved Woods Cross buffalo getting a makeover

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com WOODS CROSS—There’s been something missing at Hogan Park – the buffalo. It was put in place as part of the 2002 Olympics but it’s become an icon in the community. It’s been so well loved that it’s gone out for repair.

“The buffalo’s horns broke off,” said Woods Cross Public Works Director Sam Christiansen. “It left sharp edges and we didn’t want anyone to get hurt.”

For years people have enjoyed looking at it and taking fun photos with it, he said. “They use it to climb on but it’s made out of fiberglass and it’s not meant to be used that way.”

The buffalo has been repaired one or two times before, Christiansen said. “Hopefully we can get it repaired again and get it back out there. We might try to swap it out with something that can withstand the use. Fiberglass can only be repaired so many times. It’s a fun little thing people have fond memories of.”

Another activity going on around City Hall is geocaching, he said. “Stuff is hidden and you have to go on a fun geocache treasure hunt. The adventure is trying to find it.”

There’s a little treasure box and people leave something in it, said Christiansen. “We see groups of people looking around the park – they just love it.”

Plans for Hogan Park itself are nearing the end of the design phase, he said. “The city purchased property by Mills Park to put in parking so we’re taking a step back on Hogan Park to make sure we can properly fund it.”l The buffalo in Hogan Park was put in place during the 2002 Olympics. Over the years it’s become a fan favorite for picture taking and climbing.

Add more fiber for a healthy diet

ational Nutrition Month invites us to tweak our diet to achieve greater health. Health advice is everywhere.

Eat keto to lose weight, nothing but protein and fat. Take this protein supplement to build muscles or have thick, beautiful hair. Don’t eat gluten because your gut may hate you. If you feel a little bit confused about what is healthy, you are not alone. Truthfully, most Americans have plenty of protein in their diet. In fact, increased intake of animal protein is one of the factors in our high rate of both heart disease and cancer.

You may remember the headlines of the huge study out of California that basically found that eating large amounts of meat and cheese raised disease risk as much as smoking cigarettes. Avoid the fads that suggest more protein and avoiding foods that humans have eaten for millennia and focus on what the average American diet is missing: fiber.

The good news is that eating fiber-rich foods not only improves your health, but offers many varied and delicious options. Fruits and vegetables in a rainbow of colors with changing selections as the seasons revolve can put variety and fun back into eating. Whole-grain food like toasty bread or oatmeal is also rich in fiber and can fuel a busy day. Eating fiber leads to a longer life because it lowers cholesterol, controls blood sugar, helps maintain a healthy weight, and keeps your waste system clipping along. Fiber works better than a probiotic supplement. Signs that you do not have enough fiber is feelings of bloating from a bogged down intestinal tract or tiredness as your blood sugar levels spike and deplete without the moderating effect of fiber. If you have recently been gaining weight or been diagnosed with diabetes or heart disease, it is a sign that your diet is deficient in fiber. As you

increase your fiber, do so slowly so that your gut bacteria adjusts to the change.

Eating less protein and more fiber will also be good for your financial health. You may have noticed the inflation in the grocery stores near you. Jake Wittwer, of Lee’s Market, has seen beef prices increase by about a third during the pandemic. He cites difficulties of maintaining consistent workforce in meat industries and trucker shortages in the rising prices. Lee’s Market encourages buying the fresh seasonal produce high in fiber by making it front and center as you walk in with the wider selection nearby. Lee’s Market wants to make shopping for your next healthy meal enjoyable and successful. Wittwer said that the quality of their fresh items is a top priority. Freshness in the bakery is found in madefrom-scratch artisan breads. They have freshly made high-fiber popcorn in a variety of flavors. Green-apple-caramel corn and a rainbow corn in time for St. Patrick’s day. He also recommends the homemade tortillas and cinnaburst bread.

A good tactic for shopping for meals lower in protein and higher in fiber is to choose the desired fruit or vegetable first before choosing any accompanying meat. Pick up a bunch of broccoli that may be on sale at a good price and then buy things to complete a meal highlighting that vegetable. Avocados and tomatoes looking good? Then pick up some items for a colorful plate of nachos. Forget about the crazy fads going around. Eat a variety of healthful foods, not allowing one type of nutrient to dominate. American’s consumption of fiber needs so much improvement, it would be most healthful to start a fiber fad. It may be one of the best choices you could make for your health. l

There’s about 15 to 20 kids. I explained there was a gas leak but there was no danger or fire.

Kids are resilient. They just rolled with it and said ‘OK.’” “My boss, Assistant Police Chief Adam Osoro called and told me there was a gas leak at the crossing on 1500 S. 675 West and it was closed down and unsafe for the kids to cross there,” said Olsen. “There’s a group of kids that live east of I-15, 1500 South is the only way for them to get home. I got the call about 2:30-2:45 p.m. and school gets out at 3:25. We were concerned that it might be too short of notice for parents to get there and pick their kids up so the bus would be best.”

Olsen has been a crossing guard for 28 years. “I live here and work at the school,” she said. “I know how crossing works and how the school works. I’m out there doing my job and making sure the kids get to school as safely as possible.” l

Happy trails to you, inversion!

ired of feeling confined to your home during the pandemic and frustrated with days of heavy inversion? You won’t need to look far to get out in nature and elevate beyond these winter blues!

Tucked away at the top of winding, neighborhood roads, Wild Rose Park and Trailhead offer locals a nature trail and park in their own backyard.

North Salt Lake boasts this beautiful slice of the Wasatch front, welcoming all nature lovers. Located at 650 Sky Crest Lane, you’ll find ample parking in the lot that opens to a well-kept picnic shelter and playground.

The trailhead is easy to find, just north of the parking lot. A visible sign is located at the entry point and the path is paved for the first tenth of a mile. The pavement transitions into a dirt path for the remainder of the trail. You’ll meander through low-lying trees that provide minimal shade.

In the winter the trail is partially covered in snow. If you’re not an avid hiker, no need to worry, as you are still able to navi-

gate the terrain with the gradual incline and areas of full sun.

With spring around the corner, this trail will certainly see an increase in traffic as the weather warms.

Wild Rose Trail is multi-use and open to all skill levels of hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers. Dogs are permitted on the trail, but they must be kept on a leash.

The trail is equipped with a bike aid station that offers various tools to use in servicing your bike.

Maintained by the City of North Salt Lake, the trail is a loop and is 1.7 miles in length. There is an official lookout point about halfway through the loop, but at any point of the hike if you turn around you will enjoy sweeping views of the Great Salt Lake

and Antelope Island.

Breaking the mold with indoor play

angaroo Zoo is more than just a place for kids to play, it’s a place for parents to unwind and families to have

Children of all ages come to this indoor park to release their energy on the animal-themed inflatables, slides, and arcade games. The park is also equipped with three themed birthday party rooms for event use.

Located on 395 North Redwood Road in North Salt Lake, the entertainment center is a viable option for fun without the higher ticket prices of an amusement park. As children bounce away, parents have the option of playing alongside them or relaxing using free Wi-Fi and massage chairs, while their kids are in sight.

Kangaroo Zoo has been in business for 13 years, recently purchased by Robby and Tamara Gold in January 2020.

“My husband worked for a big corporation for 19 years and wasn’t happy. I was a stay-at-home mom for 20 years,” Tamara said. The Golds were excited to embark in the new journey.

Like many businesses though, they were hit hard with the presence of COVID. Sadly, co-owner Tamara Gold lost her father to COVID in March 2020. “My dad was the first person in Utah with COVID to pass away,” she said. Following this loss, the families in attendance had to isolate and Tamara recalls the pain of not being able to open their new business to the public.

“The hardest part was knowing the kids were scared,” said Tamara referring to COVID closures among schools and playgrounds.

expressed gratitude for that time, “finally, these kids will have an outlet!”

“We know kids need a break. And moms need a break,” Tamara said describing the nature of their business. Parents are encouraged to use the benefits of re-entry on their daily admission to come back and forth to Kangaroo Zoo. “As a mom, I get it. If you need to bring your child in and then go home for a nap, you can,” Tamara said.

“We are really big on providing a fun, safe place,” Tamara said. The staff has several cleanliness measures in place to ensure the environment stays safe and germ free.

They use hospital-grade disinfectants daily on all equipment.

Supervising adults are free, where many organizations would charge an adult and allow the child in for free, Kangaroo Zoo flips the script on this.

Tamara is grateful to be in business and credits the customers that “put their faith in us.” “If you put out good you will get good back,” she said. “People are good and we’re so thankful for everyone’s support.”

Celebrate St. Paddy’s Day with shamrocks, leprechauns and the color orange

ocal Danielle Millar Stoddard's Irish mother celebrated St. Patrick's Day by wearing orange.

"My great grandfather was Protestant Irish and raised his children to wear orange on St. Patrick's Day. My grandmother would let my mom and her siblings wear green so they wouldn't get pinched at school, but if Grandpa was coming over, they had to change quickly to something orange; otherwise, Grandpa would get so mad. He was very stubborn and set in his ways!"

The green color rules on March 17, but not all people wear green. Some wear orange.

First celebrated in 1631, St. Patrick's Day is a Roman Catholic holiday that honors the patron saint of Ireland. The color green is the Irish Catholic tradition, but not all Irish citizens are Catholic. Some are Protestant. Protestants wear orange to honor William of Orange, the Protestant king who overthrew Roman Catholic King James II in the Glorious Revolution in 1688.

The Irish flag, with its vertical blocks of green, white, and orange, is representative of the blending of the cultures. The green represents the majority of Roman Catholics; the orange represents the minority Protestants; and the white in the center symbolizes purity and peace between the two sides.

According to the website Patriot Wood, "When Ireland's flag was created, white was chosen as the central color to represent a lasting truce and hope for peace between the two sides. It represents the ideal that every person has a part in Ireland, regardless of political stance, religion, or ethnicity."

Other Irish traditions on St. Patrick's Day include a meal of corned beef and cabbage, which, according to Delish.com, isn't actually the national dish of Ireland. It's typically only eaten in the U.S. around the holiday.

"During the time of the Irish immigration to the U.S., the first generation of Irish-Americans were in search of the comforting tastes of their homeland. On St. Paddy's Day, that meant boiled bacon. But the immigrants were too poor to afford the high price of pork and bacon products. Instead, they turned to the cheapest cut of meat available: beef brisket. The corned beef was paired with cabbage, as it was one of the cheapest vegetables available to the Irish immigrants," said the website.

While St. Patrick's Day is just another day to some people, to others, the celebrations go beyond wearing green to avoid getting pinched. Herriman’s Denise Wooten Christiansen said, "As a granddaughter of Irish immigrants, St. Patrick's Day is special to me and it's become special to my children. I decorate

our home, wear a special green chenille shamrock pin that my grandma made for every child and grandchild in our family every year, and eat corned beef and cabbage for dinner. It is a day to remember our Irish heritage and to carry on the multi-generational traditions of our family," Regardless of how you celebrate or not celebrate St. Paddy's Day, perhaps this famous Irish blessing that abounds this time of year resonates: "May the road rise to meet you,

May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. The rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand."

Or perhaps this Irish blessing that local resident Megan Sticht shared may be more appropriate to your mood: "May those who love us, love us. And those that don't love us may God turn their hearts. And if He doesn't turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles, that we may know them by their limping." l

It’s time to get moving

iving in North Salt Lake and Wood Cross has the advantage of an easy commute to many jobs in the Salt Lake City Valley or northward. In many neighborhoods, sidewalks and walking/biking trails are provided which also encourage residents to commute to activities closer to home or just to get out and move while enjoying the sun and outdoor views.

Many of the newer neighborhoods in Woods Cross have parks and sidewalks tucked around the homes, not even associated with streets. Odyssey Elementary, for example, has a sidewalk curving through a large grassy area behind some homes inviting children and their parents to walk to the school or to the playground nearby. Wood Cross is also home to Mountain View Park which boasts a covered gathering area, playgrounds and sidewalks ringing a grassy area. This park also connects residents to the ever-popular Legacy Park trail which extends over 35 miles bordering the Great Salt Lake in places. North Salt Lake offers Bountiful Boulevard where everyone and their dogs can get moving on a walk past a golf course and beautiful suburban neighborhoods. It’s also a great place for bikers. Legacy Tunnel Springs in North Salt Lake offers sidewalks connecting a soccer field and several small pavilions with grills for family fun.

After a long winter of sitting on the couch circulation slows, and muscles begin to atrophy. Moving gets circulation humming through the body that nourishes cells. Instead of weakening with inactivity, muscles are strengthened along with our bones. When we get moving early in the morning exposing ourselves to sunlight, our body clock takes note and will reward us with a better night’s sleep. The first part of your body to benefit from moving is your brain. The increased cir-

culation provides the glucose and oxygen your brain needs to work at peak capacity. We all try to eat and sleep well before a big test or mental challenge, but a good walk could be just as important. In fact, regular walking can improve memory and stave off symptoms of dementia. The hippocampus, a structure in the brain involved in memory, enlarges with regular movement sustained for a half hour a day. Other research suggests that keeping moving is the secret to slowing the aging process within cells leading to a longer life.

Moving is beneficial in staving off many of the major health problems today. Everyone knows walking can help you avoid a stroke or heart attack, but did you know it also helps reduce the risk of cancer, diabetes and even cataracts that can take your sight? In fact, moving benefits your immune system – boosting the number of fighting cells within the body.

Most importantly, moving can stave off mental illness.

Mental difficulties have skyrocketed during the quarantine in the past couple of years. Moving nurtures the brain where mental difficulties originate and encourages the release of feel-good neurotransmitters and endorphins. Try a meditative walk to ease stress. Walk in a relaxed manner paying attention to how your body feels as your feet hit the sidewalk, your breathing deepens and the air flows around your face. Allow your body and mind to pay attention to your senses: the feel of the sun, the sound of the birds or children playing in the distance, the smell of the wet grass, or the beauty of the mountains, trees, and flowers. Even if you’re not commuting to a daily job, remember to commute around your own neighborhood. l

Woods Cross High’s spring musical a big success

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com WOODS CROSS—Up beat music mixed with dancing had audiences tapping their toes and singing along as Woods Cross High School presented “Mamma Mia” earlier this month.

“You can’t beat Abba music, the energy, enthusiasm,” said Woods Cross High drama teacher Lindsay Boucher. “It’s a great story of relationships won.”

There were 30 cast members and 30 students who helped with the scenery, she said. “They built sets and got the props ready. It was a talented group.”

It’s a familiar film and definitely was a more family friendly version, said Boucher. “We wanted the community to come see the show and feel comfortable. We strive each year to make sure that happens. The students worked really hard. Davis Chamber of Commerce offers networking and collaboration for local businesses

ountiful, Centerville, Clearfield, Clinton, Farmington, Fruit Heights, Kaysville, Layton, North Salt Lake, South Weber, Sunset, Syracuse, West Bountiful, West Point, and Woods Cross – these are the 15 cities that comprise Davis County and are represented by the 15 spikes of the Davis Chamber of Commerce. The Davis Chamber of Commerce was formed in January 2001 when individual city and area chambers merged to form one entity.

By definition, a Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary partnership of businesses and professionals working together to build a healthy economy and improve the quality of life in a community. Chamber members can include the small hardware store on the corner, the mom-and-pop diner, the established bank downtown, franchise and major retailers, and the local baseball team. A chamber’s objectives are to help local businesses prosper and grow, increase job opportunities, encourage orderly expansion and development of all community segments, contribute to the overall economic stability of the community, and promote the nation’s private enterprise system of competitive marketing.

One way a Davis County business benefits from Davis Chamber membership is by participating in networking opportunities

through involvement in committees. The Lakesiders Committee is the official ambassador group of the Chamber and provides ribbon-cutting services and welcomes dignitaries and VIPs to Davis County. The Military Affairs Committee enhances business and military relationships through activities and events. It funds military programs and events throughout the year to give thanks to the nation’s military while offering education to the community about military affairs. The Chamber’s annual “Salute to Our Nation’s Defenders” picnic at Hill Air Force Base is attended by over 3,000 military and civilian personnel.

Getting into fitness with Mama T’s workout group

T

eresa DuPaix has always been into fitness. The Davis County resident grew up as a gymnast, and competed for 15 years. During DuPaix’s senior year in high school, she had back surgery to fix her severe case of scoliosis, and the surgery caused DuPaix to end her career as a gymnast.

“I was devastated,” she said. “I wanted to pursue gymnastics in college, that was my goal.”

Being the competitive person that she is, DuPaix set out to find another sport that allowed her to compete, despite her back issues. She started competing in jet skiing racing, and competed for two years. During DuPaix’s last year of racing, she won the women's all around course in Utah.

DuPaix retired from racing after the birth of her daughter, and took a pause on her fitness journey as she began working full time.

“I kind of lost who I was during that time,” she said. “I was so busy taking care of everybody else, I became depressed, and I really wasn’t happy with myself.”

In 2018, DuPaix’s passion and love for fitness was reignited.

“My doctor told me I had high blood pressure and other issues. I told my doctor I didn’t want to take medication, and she told me I needed to lose at least 40 pounds,” DuPaix said.

She followed through and lost 40 pounds that year. DuPaix then found herself with a burning desire to help others.

Toward the end of 2018, using a nickname her co-workers all called her, DuPaix formed Mama T’s workout group, and started doing early morning workouts in her driveway with a neighbor. She added a variety of classes to her driveway workouts like, pound fit, step classes, plyoyoga, core/cardio exercises and resistance bands exercises all of which DuPaix offered for free.

She supplied all of the workout equipment for the classes and recorded each workout, and uploaded it to her Facebook page.

“Doing workouts in the driveway was really peaceful,” DuPaix said. “We would watch the sun come up over the trees, and of course being in the driveway everyone could see us, so the classes started growing with more people wanting to join.”

As DuPaix’s fitness group grew she was often approached by folks in the community who wondered if she would teach certain classes.

“One of my neighbors had heard about me,” she said. “She asked if I would teach water aerobics to everyone, and offered up her pool for us to use. It really brought more of the community together.”

With teaching her driveway workouts

By Kierstynn King | The City Journals and water aerobics in the summer, and using her daughter’s performing arts theater in the winter months, DuPaix was constantly looking for ways to add new classes and experiences to her workout group.

“I’m a big believer in having fun, I think that’s important when you’re doing any type of fitness is to make sure it’s fun otherwise you aren’t going to want to do it,” she said. “On the other hand I love to do challenges. Starting in February I challenged everyone in the group to participate in the 25 pushups a day challenge to help support the American Cancer Society.”

In terms of classes, DuPaix was able to expand her classes by offering yoga classes and self defense classes.

A friend from her Martial Arts class reached out and asked if DuPaix would be willing to add a free self-defense class to Mama T’s workout group. The self defense classes are taught on and off throughout the year.

When it came to yoga, DuPaix found out one of her neighbors, Becky “Sunee” Neville, was a certified yoga instructor, and asked if she would be willing to teach yoga to her workout group.

“I was really impressed by Sunee,” she said. “She’s been teaching yoga for 12 years, she learned more about the workout group, and happily joined us. She was also willing to do it for free which I thought was just amazing.”

DuPaix credits her range of classes offered to people she sees and what they’re inspired by.

“I’m always talking to people, and looking to see how I can keep things interesting in the group,” she said. “One day I was in Liberty Park, and saw a lady from Taiwan doing traditional Chinese meditation practices in the park. I was really impressed, and asked her if she would come teach what she was doing for free in one of my driveway workouts. She wound up saying yes, and everyone loved the challenge and inspiration she gave us.”

When 2020 hit, DuPaix wound up losing her job due to COVID-19.

“When I found out I had lost my job, I was talking to my daughter and I said ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do,’” DuPaix said. “My daughter said ‘Well mom why don’t you do personal training, you’re already teaching classes.’”

She took her daughter’s advice and took a course at Salt Lake Community College to become a personal trainer.

DuPaix received her personal training certificate through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Since receiving her certificate, and getting into personal training, DuPaix has moved all her classes to BACKSTAGE PERFORMING ARTS, and has started

charging for her group classes.

“I charge $48 for a four month punch pass, which lets people come to any 16 classes they want, or if they want to just drop in, it’s $5. Whether it’s a group class or personal training I always offer a free class so people can see what we’re all about and give us a try,” DuPaix said. “I never imagined I’d be able to do all this.

Everyone has been so positive and cheered me on, it’s given me so much drive, and I feel so blessed.”

Pickleball – it’s a big ‘dill’

hortly after my family moved to Woods Cross in the summer of 2020, I walked over to Hogan Park, eager to get to know my community and what it had to offer. By my surprise, as I drew closer to the park, waves of laughter and music abundantly filled the air. Following this inviting pull, I excitedly approached the fence. My intrigue was met by smile after smile as each person happily scuffled on the court hitting paddle to ball back and forth over the net. “Come play!” they shouted.

If you have ever walked by or driven

by Hogan Park in Woods Cross (behind the Woods Cross City Hall) chances are you have also seen many of these same smiling faces enjoying themselves at the courts.

They may appear to be scooting around on tennis courts, but these are pickleball courts.

Pickleball has quickly become a growing sport that invites all skill levels and is inclusive for the entire family to play.

The sport combines elements of tennis, using a court separated by a net in between the two sides. Instead of using a tennis ball, you play with a Wiffle ball (holes throughout) and you swap out racquets for solid paddles. These paddles are like the equipment used in table tennis, just larger. The court has boundary lines drawn in the same setup as

tennis, and the size is smaller in scale. Don’t be fooled by the smaller courts, you will still gain one heck of a workout while playing.

Start-up costs are minimal and paddle sets can be found at any sporting goods store and online, beginning at $23. (Walmart carries a starter set for $22.98) Rules are posted at each entry gate into the courts for all Woods Cross pickleball players to follow. There are six courts to play on, but there are congested times of day (such as early morning when the weather is warm or late afternoon) that you might need to wait in rotation to play on a court.

Don’t fear getting to know pickleball if you haven’t played before, you will be scooped up by one of the smiling faces to join and have fun while learning, even if you show up empty-handed. l

Providing a safe space for teens through tabletop games

uring Christmas time in 2019, Kaysville resident Curtis Woodbury found himself reading an article that stated suicide was the leading cause of death for youth and teens in Utah.

“I just remember thinking how crazy it was,” Woodbury said. “I feel that suicide is something that can be prevented.”

Fueled by the article, Woodbury started thinking of ways he could help Utah’s youth.

He came up with an idea. Basing his idea off of his own experience he had as a teen, while playing tabletop games, Woodbury created Tabletop for Teens.

Tabletop for Teens is a free non-profit organization that provides kids with a safe space where they can confront difficult decisions in a game setting, feel less alone, make friends and have something to look forward to. After putting together a rough website design, Woodbury started reaching out to people, and got in touch with Kaysville’s former Mayor, Katie Witt. Witt then introduced Woodbury to Hannah Pendergast, who is a youth professional.

“I really fell in love with the mission of Tabletop for Teens, and knew I wanted to get more involved,” Pendergast said. “Curtis and I ended up being a really great match, he has all of the passion and knowledge of the game, and I know about youth development and mental health.”

Pendergast joined Tabletop for Teens, as director of operations.

Bringing in her knowledge of youth and mental health, Pendergast explains that Tabletop For Teens has helped create and provide additional protective factors for every kid that is a part of their organization.

According to youth.gov, as youth grow up they achieve mental and emotional milestones also known as developmental com-

petencies. As youth are reaching their developmental competencies, they encounter variables that either help or hinder their progress. These variables are known as risk factors, and protective factors. As a result, risk factors and protective factors can contribute to the mental health of youth.

“Tabletop games are really unique because they can provide multiple protective factors for suicide prevention,” Pendergast said. “We focus on four protective factors here at Tabletop for Teens. They are critical thinking, pro social behaviors, a sense of self and hopefulness.”

Both Woodbury and Pendergast make the safety of the kids that come to Tabletop for Teens their top priority. They provide parent waivers and pre and post surveys to ensure that they are spreading good and not harm.

Each volunteer that comes to Tabletop for Teens goes through a background check and are properly trained in how to handle difficult conversations, know the best practices for suicide prevention and make mental health a part of the discussion.

“For the introduction session, we give resources to everyone. We give them tools that they can use anonymously,” Pendergast said.

Due to COVID-19, Tabletop for Teens currently offers online gaming sessions. The group meets once a week after school, for two to three hours to play Dungeons and Dragons.

“Currently the online game play has been really positive. We aren’t limited geographically which is cool, we have participants that come play from all over,” Woodbury said.

“We have kids that’ll create art from what’s happened in the game, their characters and they can’t wait to play again.”

Utah woman’s non-profit connects brain injury survivors to resources

M

arch is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and the experiences of two local youth and their families bear witness to the challenge those who suffer injuries face daily.

Although Woods Cross’ Zach Riordan played football his entire life and suffered broken bones and sprained joints, Riordan said, “My concussion was my worst injury ever.” When Riordan played quarterback for Bountiful High football his junior year, an opposing lineman picked him up and spiked him to the ground. Riordan was out for six weeks with a concussion.

“Shortly after my concussion, I was forgetting simple things,” he said. “But the worst part was the emotional toll it took on me. I felt like my emotions were harder to control…higher and more ups and downs than usual. I lost 20 pounds due to eating and sleeping changes and I had a consistent migraine for about a month.”

Currently, Riordan, now 21, is not experiencing effects from his high school concussion four years ago, but his mother, Paula, said, “He has to be more careful moving forward. Other than that, only time will tell.”

TyAnne Crook’s life changed forever when her then 5-year-old son, Alex, fell from a department store escalator that was installed without the required safety features.

“I watched my little boy lying so still that he looked dead,” Crook said. “Sometimes his eyes would flutter open. Sometimes he would say something. Doctors and nurses said so many words that I knew the meaning of, but I couldn’t make sense of it.

All I knew was a strangulating fear. Even when he came home from the hospital, I slept next to his bed for weeks.”

Alex was diagnosed with a skull fracture, brain bleed, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Crook was given the usual cautions and things to watch out for, such as rest, avoiding screens, and alerting their doctor should anything change. Well, things certainly changed.

“Once the period of sleeping all the time wore off, he was always angry, which was weird because he was normally such a happy kid,” Crook said. “I figured his head still hurt where the fracture was, and it would go away. It didn’t. He hated all the foods he used to love. He was so anxious about everything. He started these weird behaviors like hoarding food and changing his clothes six or more times a day. Fairly quickly, he wasn’t just angry anymore; he became violent. Violent enough that everyone else in the house was afraid of him.”

She asked herself if a 5-year-old has the strength to throw a dining room chair?

He did.

“I went to the doctor and was brushed

off,” Crook said. “I went to the doctor again and again. Things were getting worse. He wasn’t sleeping anymore. He used to perform all the normal activities of daily living that were age-appropriate for a 5-year-old, and now he couldn’t. He couldn’t remember how to get dressed or tie his shoes. He couldn’t figure out brushing his teeth or even showering anymore.”

Doctors, friends, family, and neighbors told Crook, “He’s overcoming a traumatic experience…he’s just a brat…he’s lazy… you’re lazy…he needs discipline…maybe YOU need to see a counselor for your attention-seeking behavior.” Crook said, “And then one day we met a doctor that changed all that. Out of the many doctors we had seen, this was the first to understand the long-term consequences of brain injury. The doctors in the hospital were great at acute care. They put Humpty Dumpty back together again.”

Brain injury is more common than people think. Concussions, strokes, and aneurysms are brain injuries. Encephalitis, hydrocephalus, carbon monoxide poisoning, hypoxia, anoxia, brain tumors, and even birth injuries can result in brain injury.

“Approximately 60% of our prison inmates have a history of brain injury,” Crook said.

“This is due to poor impulse control and other typical symptoms post brain injury.

It’s estimated that more than half of the homeless population is brain-injured. Mental health problems are common in the brain injury community with 40% of survivors experiencing severe enough depression to require medical intervention.”

Crook’s journey with Alex inspired her to start the non-profit BrainStorm for Brain Injury (www.brainstormforbraininjury. com). This organization connects brain injury survivors to therapists, community resources, legal experts, and other survivors and their families.

“The advice we were given at the hospital was wrong,” she said. “If you’ve experienced any brain injury, see a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor who specializes in neurorehabilitation as soon as you can. Also, concussion protocols are worthless.” BrainStorm for Brain Injury provides resources to providers, experts, and advocates for TBI. “To all the caregivers out there, you are heroes,” Crook said. “To all the survivors out there, you can do this. To everyone else out there, remember that if you see someone who looks like everyone else, but they are easily distracted, maybe a little more impulsive, have a hard time getting started, unusually forgetful, have a hard time relating, is often overwhelmed, or doesn’t put together basic cause and effect, they might have a brain injury. They aren’t doing it on purpose. Brain injury is invisible.” l

The truth behind those Publishers Clearing House giveaways

L

ast month, a Kaysville resident was pleasantly surprised when Howie Guja handed her a check for $25,000. She never saw it coming, but she’d been hoping it would for more than 20 years.

That’s because Mrs. T. Bates was chosen as a winner in the Publishers Clearing House contest, something she said she’d entered many times before. It paid off when Guja, a member of the PCH Prize Patrol elite, flew into Salt Lake City the night before from New York City. He also presented a check for $10,000 to a Spanish Fork resident the same day.

For Guja, it’s another day in the office, or rather, on a plane. He, along with fellow PCH Elite Danielle Lam, delivers an average of one check a week to winners across the country. In fact, PCH has awarded nearly half a billion dollars in prizes since the company created sweepstakes after its founding in 1953.

There are always a lot of questions about the contest, whether it’s legit, how it differs from other copycat contests (many of which are frauds), and whether winners ever need to place orders to become eligible.

While he was in Utah for two check presents in February, Guja answered some frequently asked questions.

Does Publishers Clearing House really award all those prizes?

“Absolutely,” Guja said. “That’s guaranteed using three methods. First, PCH observes all regulations and registers and secures our giveaways wherever required.

Second, our sweepstakes are monitored by an outside accounting firm. Third, we have a law firm we employ that oversees the sweepstakes and winner selection process.”

Are those reactions of winners real or staged?

“They’re completely real. The winners you see being surprised by the Prize Patrol on our TV commercials are not actors but the actual winners at the moment we present their checks.”

COVID-19 has led to another crisis that financial institutions and retailers have had to contend with – a shortage of coins. Fewer cash transactions, more people ordering online and with charge cards, and our desire to remain germ-free with less handling of money in general has led to hoarding of coins by many. If you have a piggy bank or big glass jar sitting at home filled with spare change, you are hardly alone.

You might think with more stores and restaurants opening for business that the problem would have eased a bit since March of 2020, when this all started. It hasn’t.

“It’s still a problem,” said Nancy Pearce, manager of the Zions Bank branch in Bountiful. “COVID made things worse because most people don’t carry cash or coins around.

It seems like everyone has a little piggy bank for their vacation funds or holiday savings. I always encourage employees to cash in any spare change they have, because there is a real need for it.”

In 2020, the U.S. Mint increased its circulation of coins by producing 24 percent more than the year before. This is not a cheap proposition, and in fact it costs more to produce some coins than what they’re worth.

Example – it costs 1.76 cents to produce a penny and 7.42 cents to produce a nickel. Conversely, dimes cost 3.73 cents to produce, and the cost for making a quarter is 8.62 cents.

Health concerns also drove the shortage. During the early days of COVID-19, the Saudi Arabian Monetary Au-

thority quarantined coins and cash in sealed containers before finally returning them to circulation. This came after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated the odds of getting the virus from a contaminated surface are 1 in 10,000. Coins are not carriers of COVID-19.

“Lots of small businesses need coins,” Pearce said.

“We have them come in all the time to get coins. In the past, we’ve asked customers to bring in rolled coins, because we don’t have a coin counting machine here. Now, we just tell people to bring them in and we’ll roll them. We need to get these coins back in circulation.”

During 2020, some 7-Eleven stores offered people who traded in $5 worth of rolled coins a free slurpee. Other merchants have at times during the past two years made similar offers of coins for products.

If you are stashing coins, here are four reasons you should look through them: A 2005 Kansas state quarter read “In God We Rust.”

Find one of those, and it could be worth as much as $100.

The 2004 Wisconsin state quarter with an extra leaf – worth up to $1,500.

In 1955, the U.S. minted the so-called “double die” penny, where Lincoln looks the same but “1955” and “Liberty” appear to have shadows. Its value is up to $1,800.

What you really want to find is a 1943 copper penny.

That year, most of the pennies were made of zinc-coated steel, but if you find a copper one from that year – take a breath. One of the rarely-found pennies was auctioned off in 2010 for $1.7 million. Not a bad return on a one-cent investment.l

was eight when I ran away from home. It was the summer of ’76 and my mother did the unspeakable. She banned a book in our home.

In the stack of books I’d checked out at the library, there was a paperback copy of “Jaws” I instinctually hid from Mom because she could be irrational. The book cover, with its looming shark and nearly-nude swimmer, might make her think the novel wasn’t “proper” for an 8-year-old.

With a plateful of homemade oatmeal cookies, I sat on my bed engrossed in shark attacks. My bedroom door opened and Mom (without knocking!) entered my room to put clothes away. Her mouth dropped open when she saw what I was reading. She grabbed it out of my hands and banned the book from the house.

How dare she!

I fumed and realized there was only one answer to such blatant oppression. I got my red suitcase and packed a nightgown, a change of clothes, my toothbrush and a Nancy Drew book. I stomped down the stairs, ignoring Mom as she stood in the kitchen doorway with her arms crossed.

Before I walked out of the house forever, I told her I couldn’t live with her cruelty any longer. I walked two blocks to my Aunt Judy’s house and announced I was moving in because Mom was an unreasonable tyrant.

I stayed the night, knowing Mom must regret her terrible behavior. I figured by the next day, she would be frantic with worry.

Served her right. (I later learned she’d called my aunt to let her know I was heading her way.)

When I returned home, I asked her if I could read “Jaws.” She said no. You can bet your sweet bookends I found a copy of “Jaws” and secretly read it cover to cover.

My effort to read banned books didn’t stop there. As I got older, I tore through Judy Blume's books, inhaled the “Flowers in the Attic” series, and absorbed “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Twice. My cousin and I would sit on the bookstore floor, reading salacious parts of popular bodice-ripper novels written by the queen of romance, Kathleen Woodiwiss.

I make it a point to read banned books, buy banned books, promote banned books and encourage my daughters to do the same.

I figure if a book is so powerful it has to be banned or burned, that’s a book I need to read.

Anything that gets people’s knickers twisted and touches a literary nerve goes on my toread list.

Parents and lawmakers are increasingly trying to create laws that shelve books that don’t fit in with their (mostly conservative) ideals. When that happens, society loses. Didn’t you read the (ironically) banned “Fahrenheit 451?”

I agree that 8-year-olds don’t make the best choices, but if we control the curriculum, frame the narrative, and put a conservative slant on history, we’re not doing those 8-yearolds any favors.

In January, when a school board in Tennessee banned the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel, “Maus,” parents pushed back.

The Salt Lake County Library System has dozens of copies of the Holocaust story where the Jews are depicted as mice, Germans as cats, and Americans as dogs.

I was happy to see it has hundreds of hold requests.

Looks like I’m not the only one making sure I read things that make me uncomfortable.
