INDIVIDUALS WITH DOWN SYNDROME HAVE THE CHANCE TO SHINE AT GIGI’S PLAYHOUSE

G

igi’s Playhouse has a mission: to change the way the world views Down syndrome and to create an environment of acceptance and inclusion for individuals with Down syndrome, of all ages.

While there are 55 locations of Gigi’s Playhouse around the country, the Layton location (1916 N. 700 West) is the only one in Utah. Angela Horn just started as the site’s manager and is excited to bring free educational and developmental programs to people with Down syndrome and their families.

“I think a misconception is that everyone who has Down syndrome is alike,” Horn said.

“We know that’s not true. Everyone is different.

Everyone has their own personality and their own abilities. We like to celebrate all of their abilities and all of their accomplishments as they go along.”

Programs at Gigi’s Playhouse include the popular Language Music N' Our Peeps class, recommended for children up to 3 or 4 years old.

LMNOP teaches communication through music, fun activities and basic sign language.

Gigi’s Kitchen is a program where teens and adults learn how to prepare nutritious meals. The class reviews a recipe, prepares it and shares the meal together. Participants set measurable goals and work on those a little bit each day, with everyone celebrating accomplishments.

Women who discover they’re expecting a child with Down syndrome often reach out to the center for guidance. With programs for expectant moms, all the way through end-of-life, Gigi’s Playhouse is a safe community. In 1980 the average life expectancy of a person with Down syndrome was 26 years old, now it’s more than 60.

The center shut down during COVID but has seen a resurgence over the last few months.

“This is one thing that they get to do and everyone looks forward to coming out,” Horn said.

Five flowers that will last through drought and for years to come

A

s annual flowers begin to wilt in the unseasonably hot weather and water restrictions make it difficult to keep these diva flowers happy, gardeners are turning to hardier, drought resistant flowers that bloom for shorter periods through the spring and summer, but come back year after year. Flowers that bloom for multiple years in their season are called perennials. Because perennials establish a deeper root system, these types of flowers tolerate droughts better than annual flowers which just last for a few months.

While there are literally hundreds of perennials that grow in Wood Cross and North Salt Lake, local Landscaper, Melanie Brooks, has chosen her top five favorite perennials to nurture during the ongoing drought.

• Ornamental Grass. Though the flower of perennial grasses may not be the showiest, their overall spiky look adds excellent structure to flower beds. Indian Rice Grass, for example, is native to Utah and provides food for birds and small mammals. Little bluestem is another Utah native grass with a desirable, soft-blue hue.

• Cat Mint. Cat’s Meow catmint becomes a showy hump of cobalt-blue, spire flowers. Besides giving the local cats a pleasurable high, quickly spreading catmint comes in leaves ranging from silver to green and flowers in all shades of purple. As it gets large, catmint can be divided to share with friends or start in a new part of the yard. If you shear spent flowers, it will bloom for many months.

• Sundancer Daisy. Cheerful, yellow daisies on an evergreen, grass-like mound. Evergreen because the base stays green all winter. This native, perennial blooms in the spring and if deadheaded (spent flowers trimmed) reblooms when rain falls in the summer. As tall as it is wide, the size of a cat, each bright flower is unique.

• Blanket Flower. This amazing flower is intense red with blazing yellow tips. Striking hot colors characterize all varieties. New plants are easy to grow from the seeds. Since Blanket Flower may only last a few years, you may want to let some go to seed to keep this showy flower in your beds.

• Day Lilies. Available in a variety of designer colors, varieties of day lilies bloom throughout spring and summer.

Plant a spring, early-summer and mid-summer variety for extended blooming time. Since these perennials have a bulb for storing water, they are drought tolerant and are easy to divide and share with your gardening friends.

Melanie, owner of Fruitful Design landscaping company, suggests going to conservation garden park down in West Jordan to see these and other perennials suitable for Utah. She also suggests visiting the website localscapes to help you reimagine your yard. Classes are offered at this website that will help homeowners reduce their water usage by about a third, while increasing beauty and balance in the yard. “Grass against a building serves no purpose,” Melanie said, so she recommends designating a grass play space away from structures, as well as other useful spaces like outdoor seating or a fire pit. After these spaces are planned and connected with paths, the remainder becomes garden. A garden filled with interesting, drought resistant plants like flowering perennials.l

Fighting cancer one party at a time

W

hen Kaysville native Rebekah Bernier was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, she decided to throw herself a big party on her next birthday. A few years later, her sister, Kathryn Irvine, was diagnosed with breast cancer, her brother developed non-Hodgkins lymphoma and another sister, Karen Lee, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and passed away in 2017.

In all, five of the nine siblings have been diagnosed with different types of cancer.

Looking for a way to celebrate life, to remember the life of her sister and to help people dealing with cancer, Bernier morphed her annual birthday party into the SparkLee Sisters Charity Ball. The gala is a chance for the community to come together for a good cause.

“Once you get out of high school you don’t really have that chance to get all dressed up,” Bernier said. “Most women, I have found, love these types of events.

We’re just creating a space to go have fun, to party, all while raising money for two amazing nonprofits.”

The SparkLee Sisters Charity Ball will be held Thursday, Sept. 8, from 6-9 p.m. at Davis High School (325 South Main St.).

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer SLC

and Needs Beyond Medicine.

This adults-only event will feature a live DJ, dancing, a silent auction and raffle prizes. A local photographer has donated her time to capture the event and a professional dancer will give a brief ballroom dancing lesson.

“It’s so fun,” Bernier said. “It’s just us doing this. We’re not some big company. We grew up in Kaysville and we try to keep [the event] in Kaysville,” she said. “It’s getting a little bigger every year, which is exciting.”

Both Bernier and Irvine worked as representatives for a jewelry company. By combining their maiden name, Lee, with the sparkle of jewelry, SparkLee was born. They have since made their brother an honorary member of the SparkLee Sisters.

To ensure the majority of proceeds go to the two nonprofits, the sisters pay for the event out of their own pockets. They hope a corporate sponsor would be willing to cover the venue, food or other costs so more money can go to people diagnosed with cancer and struggling with financial worries.

Because the programs at Gigi’s Playhouse are free, the locations are 99% volunteer run. The center usually offers more classes but a lack of volunteers makes it difficult.

“We have over 20 signature programs but are only offering four because we need volunteers,” Horn said. “We really would love to have volunteers so we can build our programs back up. It’s my goal to continue adding new programs throughout the year and to offer more for our families. I’d love to be able to get our programming numbers back to where they were before COVID.” Volunteers are needed to run programs, greet families, find funding and donations, clean the facility and provide marketing.

Richard Hatch takes a close-up of his life

R

ichard Hatch has not taken the conventional path. As a young boy with a father in the U.S. Air Force, he lived overseas in places like England and Turkey before his family settled in Bountiful, a city built by his pioneer ancestors.

At Bountiful High School, where he served as student body president in 1970, Hatch studied Arabic for three years and learned to love performing in the school’s theater productions. After a two-year church mission in Lebanon, he enrolled in a new program at BYU for professional filmmakers, run by an Emmy Award-winning director from New York.

“Stage was my deal, but I made the transition from stage to filmmaking as a necessity to make a living,” Hatch said. “When I graduated, I had to go either the Hollywood route, which I tried, but I saw associates go off the deep end in Hollywood.”

Instead, Hatch got a job creating commercial films for companies in the new Silicon Valley. He found himself in the midst of the hightech industry, making films for Intel, IBM and Apple. Hatch stayed there for five years before becoming an independent producer in California, a job that allowed him the opportunity to work from home.

“I could raise my kids and have flexibil-

ity,” he said. “I loved working from home. As a result, I’ve become very close to my family and feel very successful with what they’ve become and what they’ve done with their lives, and my ability to be involved in their lives, and now my grandkids’.”

After 25 years, Hatch was offered a job with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, doing filmmaking projects all over the world. He moved his family back to Bountiful and spent 12 years creating documentaries, Bible story recreations and films about the history of the Saints.

Now Hatch makes films detailing the history of notable pioneers, like Robert Gardner, Jr., Perrigrine Sessions and Joseph Millet. He created several films for the Bountiful Museum and five films about the Bountiful Tabernacle.

But the project most dear to his heart is the documentary he made about Jester Hairston, an American composer and leading expert on Black spirituals and choral music.

“I met him at a concert where my wife was singing. I just needed to make a documentary of his life,” Hatch said. “He was 93.

He’d dedicated his life to teaching the art of the spiritual, the songs of the slaves, and spreading them worldwide.”

the film that would honor Hairston’s life and legacy but was unsuccessful. In addition to the documentary, he used Hairston’s journals to write an autobiography about the composer, and created a Broadway musical based on Hairston’s life.

“Jester Hairston’s documentary is my favorite and one that never got published,” Hatch said. “I think what I’m most proud of is my journey into the Black community, researching and studying the life of this African American composer. It took me to his home, to his community and to other friends and acquaintances of his, over a long period of time.

“It helped me understand the plight of that community and the history of Blacks in America that did not get taught to me growing up.

And, of course, going to school in Bountiful, we had no African Americans in our school. It gave me an understanding and tolerance and

empathy for a culture that was not in our back door.”

More than 150 videos, including the Hairston documentary, can be found on Hatch’s YouTube channel, RJHatchMedia.

Hatch loves finding the best way to tell a story, whether it’s through dramatization, narration or having the person share their own experiences. He said the trick is to find the thread that appeals to people and keep it intriguing.

As the world is saturated with media content, Hatch worries that what’s being done is rushed and mediocre.

“Today, a lot of kids learn as they go, and that’s one way to do it, but schooling sure gives you a chance to more methodically investigate the craft of it,” he said. “I’m a restless creative.

I’m dabbling in everything and having a great time.”l

Ron Randall is still pumped at 92

I

t doesn’t have digital gas pumps with TV screens and the office is filled with photos of bygone days, but Ron’s Service Station on 278 N. Main Street in Centerville has something no other business can provide. It has Ron Randall.

Even at 92, Randall goes to work every day as a constant stream of visitors comes to the station. Some want their car’s emissions checked, some want pictures in front of the classic building, some buy cans of soda, and some just want to sit and talk.

“I like to be here and meet people,” Randall said. “Every day someone comes in to chat. It’s been a good life. We haven’t made a lot of money but we’ve done all right.”

Randall’s service station has been a fixture on Main Street since he partnered with Phillips 66 to build a new structure on the site after a windstorm blew down the previous station in 1959.

It’s been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2017.

The station has seen better days. It sold gas for the last time in 1998. The office is full of old photo albums, trophies from his days as a chariot racer, pictures of horses and yellowed newspaper articles detailing awards won by Randall and his wife, who passed away in 2011.

Randall graduated from Davis High School in 1948, married his childhood sweetheart Darlene Noakes in 1949 and raised four children. He and his wife were active members of the Twin Stars horseback riding club and acclaimed ballroom dancers. Even after Darlene was moved to an assisted living facility in Bountiful, they continued to dance together twice a week. Randall and his wife were inducted into Centerville’s Hall of Fame in 2005.

“We did everything. Sold gas, fixed tires and made cars run,” Randall said. “I liked working on cars and I liked working with people. I was a little baffled to start with, but I’m not anymore.”

Many young men in the area had their first jobs at Ron’s Service Station which offered full-service that included pumping gas, cleaning windshields and checking oil levels.

“I hired a lot of teenage boys through the years,” he said.

“They had to learn to handle the money and wait on the public.

They had to work on cars and be reliable. Some of them were mechanically inclined. Others weren’t and they pumped gas or cleaned up.”

Now, his daughter, Jackie Hardy, helps him process payments and keeps him company during the day. As a little girl, she would come to the station when her mom had errands to run.

Hardy would play with the equipment and hide in the tires. She said her dad always had a strong work ethic. “I’d see him in the morning before he went to work and he got home late at night.”

Randall sometimes gets offers for the station, but he doesn’t want to sell. It’s the longest-running business in Centerville, operated by the oldest living native resident of the city. As he walks through the station, he reminisces about his father who was a milk hauler and how he’s the only remaining sibling out of seven brothers.

Up until three years ago, Randall rode his horse to work every day. There are metal rings on the walls inside the station where he’d tie his horses and shoe them during the winter. He spent 57 years building and racing chariots and created the Wasatch Slopes Chariot Racing Club.

Now, he said cars have computer systems, people are too busy to talk and there’s more traffic outside his station than ever before. Gas prices have gone from 31 cents per gallon in 1960 to more than $5 in 2022.

But Randall isn’t worried about change. He still owns two horses and enjoys his 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. As long as he’s able, he’ll come to work every morning, sit outside the station and visit with anyone who wants to talk.

“My thought is to live and let live,” he said. “I try to be a friend to everyone. I try to think positive.” l

Senior Lunch Bunch is more than a free meal

E

veryone is welcome at the Senior Lunch Bunch, a program in North Salt Lake and Woods Cross that not only offers a free meal but an opportunity to get to know others around town. Woods Cross holds its Lunch Bunch on the second Thursday of each month at the Woods Cross Public Works Building, 2287 S. 1200 W. and North Salt Lake has a similar offering the second Wednesday of each month at the North Salt Lake City Hall, 10 E. Center St. Anyone 55 and older can attend a Lunch Bunch event and they don’t have to be a resident. More than 80 people attended the Lunch Bunch in Woods Cross last month.

This free lunch is more than delicious food prepared by volunteers and sponsored by the city. The Woods Cross Lunch Bunch has a delightful hostess, Marilyn Lavender, who is a quick-witted octogenarian who tells jokes, interesting stories and has even written a poem or two to mark a special occasion.

She will introduce the “entertainment” for the month which usually lasts about 30 minutes after everyone has eaten. During July, for example, Jay Christensen played guitar for the group playing popular songs such as “The Star-Spangled Banner” and

having the whole group join in singing, “Edelweiss.” Another afternoon also featured Christensen who is an actor in many church films and brings clips or movies and speaks of his experience. At Christmas, they usually invite the Woods Cross High madrigals to come and perform. The hostess also honors birthdays and small gifts are given while the audience sings the traditional celebratory song.

Additionally, the Woods Cross lunch bunch has a harvest table where guests can bring extra produce from their garden to share with their neighbors. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peaches, and garlic are often available. Zucchini can be abundant and no one is required to take one home.

Finally, the group plays bingo. This is the highlight for many participants and becomes quite exciting. Participants are asked to bring a while elephant gift, and everyone goes home with at least one prize. Those who win more than one gift can share it with their neighbor. The committee that plans the lunch, headed by Vicki Hinckley, also prepares some bell ringer gifts for lucky bingo winners. These gifts may be a basket with supplies for a picnic, root beer floats, or s’mores.

set up the tables, while other’s stay after to help with the cleanup. To volunteer call Hinckley at 801-295-6388. It may be worth it to come at least once to the luncheon to get on the list of participants. During COVID, the committee sent gift certificates to Dairy Queen and Kneaders among other restaurants for their community isolated

by the pandemic. Once they provided sunshine packs with a variety of yellow treats to cheer up the group who couldn’t meet in person for a time.

Come feel the community as you enjoy a meal and entertainment at one of the lunch offerings in Woods Cross and North Salt Lake. Everyone is welcome. l

Woods Cross proposes property tax increase

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com WOODS CROSS—Taxes are painful – but necessary – to keep a city running efficiently. Woods Cross City has initiated the Truth in Taxation process for 2022 in order to collect an additional $650,000 to operate the General Fund budget. If approved, taxes on a $469,000 home would increase from $172.31 a year to $298.19, a difference of $125.88, roughly $10.49 per month.

“Inflation has hit us just like everyone else,” said councilmember Jessica Kelemen.

“It’s been a long time since we initiated this to keep up with inflation. It’s something the police and South Davis Metro are all facing. We need funding for public safety and maintaining streets. It’s all important and it all costs money.”

The city has only gone through Truth in Taxation three times in the past 26 years, said City Administrator Bryce Haderlie. “It was in 2010, 2011 and 2016. We benefited with COVID because government agencies received money and they also shoved a whole bunch to citizens who started spending that money.”

That brought in extra sales tax, he said.

“We won’t experience that this year. We don’t know how inflation will play out with no money coming in.”

The general fund is similar to a budget someone would create for their own family, said Haderlie. “You estimate a budget in your own home with expenditures and revenue. You have to balance that by either taking out money from savings or putting money into savings and try to balance that.”

The city's assessment to South Davis Metro Fire went up by $49,000, he said. “We pay them in addition to what we tax the citizens.”

Police wages have gone up 22 percent to compete with other agencies compared to 11 percent for other city wages, Haderlie said.

“It’s a competitive job market. We had a marketing company track wages in the region and make comparisons of other agencies. They say ‘here’s your range’ then we need to put them in that range depending on years of service, etc.”

Haderlie said their goal is to pay them right now so they don’t go down the street because they can make $3 more. “Police officers are hard to find.”

“For us wages are a big thing,” said Woods Cross Police Chief Chad Soffe. “This doesn’t put us above but more in the middle.

We’re not trying to make the most money but trying to get more so officers will want to stay here. We’re banking on them wanting to work in a small community. Animal control, dispatch, all the fees keep going up.”

“We look at the city like a business,” said Haderlie. “We have to provide services. A benefit to Woods Cross is our phenomenal sales taxes. People are buying right here in our community. These are not new services, they just keep operating as they have.”

bill the city only got $186, he said. “That’s not even 7 percent to Woods Cross. We’re losing ground each year through inflation.”

While commercial properties pay on 100 percent of the value, a primary residence pays on 55 percent of the value, he said.

The breakdown of what the city needs the $650,000 for is as follows: • $500,000 will go toward public safety cost increases • $150,000 will go toward an annual on a 10-year bond that is needed to fund a variety of road projects over the next three to four years.

“Nobody likes a tax increase, but they like the improvements,” said one resident.

“It adds up,” said another resident who has lived in Woods Cross since 1972. “Especially on a fixed income. The hard part is it’s not just the city. It’s everything we’re dealing with.”

A public hearing on the proposed tax increase will be held on Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 1555 S. 800 West. The City Council will hold a public meeting Aug. 16 to approve a resolution to adopt a property tax rate as proposed or lower.

“The council can decide to set it lower, they’re not bound by that rate,” said Haderlie.

“But if it is any lower they’ll have to make cuts in the budget too.”l

FARMINGTON—The west side of Farmington has seen substantial growth with Station Park and the housing surrounding it. A plan to develop the area north of that into a business park has been in the works for about two years.

Plans for the new Farmington Station are currently under review by the planning commission and city council.

“The city commissioned an updated market condition for the area,” said Farmington City Community and Economic Development Direct Brigham Mellor. “The developers might tell us to build it here but the study might show that it should be done there. It helps to have a more unbiased direction in the process.”

GSBS Architects is doing a financial plan and analysis, he said. “We hired them through the Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC).

We have a grant from them. They put in 25 percent and the city does 75 percent.”

The design implements transportation and highway changes coming in around the train station and multifamily housing, said Mellor.

“There’s federal government money and they dole that out and regional planning and the federal government helps with that planning effort.”

As part of the plan documents is criteria information for their design to follow, he said. “If they can follow the spirit of it they try to do that but if it doesn’t meet realities they do a plan that takes into account the market conditions of near and long term population growth.”

Mellor said they’re looking into a robotic parking solution. “There are some already in Salt Lake and Lehi. It costs less in the short term and it’s a good possibility.”

They don’t even have regular parking stalls, he said. “You pull up and it parks your car for you. It sounds like pie in the sky but it’s not far off. GSBS International doesn’t do structure

parking, it uses robotics. It’s how they design it so it’s not wasting space. It addresses the market demand and maximizes space now and into the future.”

How it works is a metal pallet runs through a series of conveyor belts that parks the car in a stall that is really tight, said Mellor. “It’s like in a warehouse where they pull an item and bring it down then wrap plastic around it. With robotic parking they’ve taken a page from mechanical distribution.”

The legislature passed HB462 that requires development around a UTA hub, he said. “It makes a case for UTA partnering with us on mass transit options like shuttles running up and down the roads. If they put a bus out there, there are going to be riders. If they allocate resources it could be deployed to meet the criteria of HB462.”

There’s not going to be a lot of retail in the business park but people who work there could get on the shuttle that takes them to Station Park, said Mellor.

A shuttle to the Legacy Events Center was not included in the analysis, he said. “But if it makes sense to go around the corner (with the Station Park shuttle) we’d absolutely do that.

We want to make sure that Clark Lane to the fairgrounds is safe for pedestrians. The shuttles could swing around and drop people off.”

The county offices have moved downtown so the shuttle would come out directly dropping employees off at the county building so that they don’t have to walk from the Lagoon stop, said Mellor.

The city council is excited, he said. “This was former Mayor Talbot’s vision. The past and present council sowed the field so it can grow and become all that it’s meant to be.” l

Legacy Events Center expansion in final design phase

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—The Legacy Events Center in Farmington has grown from a facility primarily used for horse races and equestrian events to hosting youth sports, trade shows, cheerleading, dance and dog shows. As the use has transitioned over the years, the County Commission has seen a need for more space.

The design of a 120,000 square foot building on the north end of the center is underway and expected to be finalized in 2022 with a ground breaking in spring 2023 and completion at the end of 2024.

“Method Studio Architect is doing the design,” said Community and Economic Development Director Kent Andersen. “We’ve brought in Layton Construction as CM/GC (Construction Manager/ General Contractor) during the design phase to help us better understand the actual cost, the timing and availability.”

The Legacy Events Center was established in 1990, he said. “It was supported by tourism tax dollars and designed for equestrian events. In 1998, the building opened and was built to host the 2002 Olympic Rodeo Cultural Event. Since 2002, the venue rarely held equestrian events that exceeded 5 percent of the seating capacity and struggled to compete in that shrinking market.”

The commission looked for other ways to help the project have greater impact to the community, recognizing that youth sports were a strategic way for the county to use the facility and could be hosted for years to come, said Andersen. “More often I get comments from residents saying they have been to the facility to attend a youth sporting event than any other event. With 35 percent of the county population under 19 – 122,000 kids – we used to raise

crops and now we raise kids.”

A youth sports tournament brings in visitors that impact tourism revenue, he said.

“They stay at our hotels, eat at our restaurants, etc. This new facility will allow for the opportunity to bring in basketball and volleyball. It will also be designed in a way to hold high school graduations. We’re excited to have those in Davis County instead of parents having to drive to Weber State.”

During the summer hotel occupancy is at 80 percent, said Andersen. “In the winter it is 60 percent. We want to drive more hotel stays during the winter period.”

Recognizing a small number of equestrian related activities, including 4-H programs, would be displaced, the commission committed $5 million to construct an equestrian venue at the USU Botanical Center in Kaysville, he said. “That is estimated to be complete in late spring 2023.”

The events center is unique, said Andersen. “It is centrally located along the Wasatch Front and the Western, U.S. There is easy access to I-15 and it’s only 15 minutes from the Salt Lake International Airport.”

What also sets it apart is the proximity to Station Park, he said. “When parents are here for an all day tournament they’re going to want to be entertained and fed. What better place for that than Station Park.”

The new facility is still in the design phase, he said. “We’re trying to stay within budget so it may mean some things are cut. We’re really excited. It will certainly have a big impact on businesses but also the community and youth sports. It also creates a location for equestrian events so we can preserve that heritage.”l

Bracing for impact: how roller derby builds confidence and community

I

t might look like an aggressive collision, with no rhyme or reason, but Oo Barracuda, Ginny Wheelsley and Sacajawheela know exactly what they’re doing.

Roller derby might be the most misunderstood sport in the country. It’s part football, part marathon and part wrestling match, but beneath all the noise and excitement is a game with intense strategy and athleticism – and cool derby names.

West Bountiful resident Amy Royer (aka Ginny Wheelsley) took up the sport nine years ago, after her first child was born. She was looking for a way to get out of the house and find a fun way to be active.

“Now it’s my social outlet, it’s my physical outlet and it’s like anxiety therapy,” she said. “It really has been an incredible outlet in my life.”

An inclusive sport that welcomes all genders and identities, there are teams for women, men, LGBTQ, co-ed and juniors. With The Derby Depot in Salt Lake (1415 S. 700 West #17), Utah boasts one of only six permanent roller derby tracks in the country.

Royer plays with Beehive Skate Revolution, the only recreational derby league in the state. It’s not the aggressive, competitive game portrayed in movies, but make no mistake, players take the sport seriously.

“People think, myself included, that all these women are going to be tough, mean and competitive and take out their anger on everything, but it’s not like that at all,” Royer said.

“I’m not going to lie. There are some injuries.

We’re not going to make you do anything you’re uncomfortable with, but accidents do happen.”

By day, Jess Hill works at Primary Children’s Hospital, but at night, she rules the derby track as Sacajawheela (Wheela for short).

Hill and her daughter have been playing since 2013 when they fell in love with the derby community.

As a nurse, Hill deals with trauma-level incidents on a regular basis. The mental and emotional release of roller derby has had a big impact on her life.

“Sometimes it’s all I can do to get myself to practice but then I feel so much better, not just physically but mentally. It kind of clears my space and gets that stress and energy out.”

Hill coached the junior league and watched youth learning valuable skills, and not just about derby.

“We have a lot of juniors coming in with self-esteem issues and getting bullied,” she said. “There are a lot of kids struggling with school. I have seen kids come out of their shell and do a complete 180 with confidence and

having something to be proud of by joining roller derby and having that community.”

Since COVID, derby numbers have dropped but Hill hopes to get more people involved in the sport. She said it’s not just about skating, although skating has a physical benefit, but it’s about feeling like you belong in a community that cares about each person.

People often assume a player has to be tough and aggressive to succeed at the sport, but Hill said that’s not true. One of her best

friends was very timid but Hill said she now conducts a lot of the league training sessions.

Utah Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission makes reports available to the public

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com CENTERVILLE—There are justice courts throughout the state that handle things such as traffic tickets, misdemeanors and other infractions including here in Davis County. Most of them have part-time judges who often oversee more than one court in different cities.

To make sure judges are being fair, treating those who come before them with respect and following the law, the Utah Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission (JPEC) has been set up to assess a judge’s performance and make that report available to voters so that they can make an informed decision whether to retain that judge at the end of their term. These evaluations have been going on in courts all over the state but not in smaller justice courts until now.

The commission has developed a video courtroom observation system that allows them to evaluate the judge without having to physically be there. It went live at the beginning of this month.

“We’ve been doing evaluations since 2012,” said Jessica Yim, Executive Director of JPEC. “For judges with a larger case load, we have access to their courtroom but some of the smallest in the state meet only one morning a week or one evening a month in rural areas. A lot of times the defendants don’t even show up. It’s not cost effective to send someone down there.”

In some places a judge doesn’t even have to be a lawyer, she said. “In Davis County they do but many are doing something else as their main profession and work very part time.

So you can imagine how different that is in a big courthouse.

Some of the smaller ones don't even have courtrooms.”

Doing it by video seems much more possible, said Yim.

“The video replicates in-person observation for full-time judges. We did a pilot to test this and it was successful.”

There are people who have never been evaluated, this will be the first time, she said. “Volunteers tune into these hearings as observers to watch the judges and make written reports for us. They go through a courtroom observation program to be trained.”

Now every judge in Utah can be evaluated, Yim said.

“It’s really exciting. They can be held accountable and improve their performance. Justice court is the face of the justice system. Until we get a traffic ticket we don’t often know much about the courts. Evaluations show how they’re doing their jobs.”

The commission looks at data for minimum performance standards to see if the judge meets those, she said.

“They are evaluated on their legal ability, administrative skills, integrity, how they treat people in court, if they’re procedurally fair and time standards that they don’t impose too much delay. We look across the board and hold everybody accountable.”

No one likes to be evaluated, she said. “I believe justice courts are supportive and those tiny court judges want that feedback. They don’t spend as much time honing their skills.

One hope is as we watch court we’ll develop ways to help give them the kind of training the judges need.”

“This is a step forward,” said Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross. “It makes sense. Last year, 95 percent of court hearings were conducted virtually. With the JPC program, observers can watch judges and take notes. The legislature decides whether to confirm or not confirm a judge’s

Most people don’t know what the JPC does, he said.

“They get it confused with the Judicial Conduct Commission (JCC). For example someone goes to trial and thinks the judge was bribed or had an affair with the other party so they go into court and file a complaint. If the JCC thinks it’s substantiated they will investigate and come out and reprimand people.”

The JPEC evaluates judges and makes that available to voters, he said. “Now with mail-in-voting, more and more people are going to the internet to do research on judicial candidates.”

Audit ensures election integrity

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—Although the primary election ended on June 28, the work is not over for those in the Davis County Clerk/Auditor office. A post-election audit was held last month to reassure voters that the process is secure and votes were accurately counted.

“We’re excited to wrap this up,” said Davis County Clerk/Auditor Chief Deputy Brian McKenzie. “This is the final step in the election process. The Lt. Governor’s office gives us a list of the ballots to be counted. Any one batch could contain ballots from across Davis County. The policy requires a minimum of 1% or 1,000 ballots whichever is less for the audit.”

Volunteers review the ballot images and compare them to the electronic tabulation, he said. “They also review the signature on the ballot envelope and the voter registration on it as well to make sure voters registered correctly, which is an additional level of the audit process.”

Commissioner Randy Elliott served as an independent auditor since he was not running in the election. “This is the first time they’ve had an elected official oversee the process.

It gives more accountability. They do a good job on the audit to make sure the signatures are correct and make a note that they’ve been approved.”

Elliott said he’s surprised at how many people don’t vote for all the candidates. “We need more education so people can find out about all the candidates.”

Ryan Cowley, Director of Elections in the Lt. Governor’s Office, was there to oversee the audit and provide the list of batches that needed to be checked. He emailed the list

at the beginning of the audit.

“Davis County is unique in that they don’t get the batches until today,” he said. “It’s just one more step Davis County has implemented of going above and beyond to find new ways to improve the process. It’s randomly selected so they don’t have the opportunity to do anything so they’re not picking the ballots.”

Residents Bruce and Betty Young came to check out how the system works. “I’m an auditor so I look at the data to prove or disprove the process,” said Bruce. “A lot of people are concerned about elections and they’re looking for validation. Auditors never trust anything until it can be verified.”

Bruce said he’s trying to be methodical. “It gives more election confidence. Not everyone will do it.”

“What brings me out is because I have 45 years in a mix of banking and defense,” said another resident. “Audits were non-stop. If you encountered a situation where people were resisting an audit it draws suspicion.”

If the voting system isn’t secure, every other issue doesn’t matter, he said. “I appreciate Brian doing this. It increases my trust in the operation. It’s a good step forward the fact he invited people in.”

“In all of my time we’ve only had one problem where the machine counted a vote it shouldn’t have,” said McKenzie. “There was a crease in the ballot to the right of the circle.

There was just enough of a shadow by the mark it looked like they hadn’t voted. We looked through every ballot and it was the only one reported. It didn’t impact the race or results. We learned from that and adjusted the ballot so that it’s not next

to the crease.”

“This has always been open to the public by the county to enhance the transparency of elections,” said Clerk/Auditor Curtis Koch. “Go to the source. If you’re concerned about the process this is where you should be.”

The Clerk/Auditor office is continuing to host election integrity meetings monthly for the public to ask questions and learn more about the process. l

Local treasure hunters find the $20,000 prize

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com KAYSVILLE—Finding buried treasure has been the stuff of legends, but for three Bountiful High grads it became a reality last month when they solved a puzzle that led them to the $20,000 pot.

For the last couple of years, real estate investors David Cline and John Maxim have posted a poem on social media with clues to lead treasure hunters to the booty and this year, Kaysville residents Ira Rice and Rachelle Rice and Rachelle’s brother Michael Rose were the lucky ones to find it.

“Last year Mike brought the treasure hunt up,” said Ira. “We tried it out and came close so this year we were determined to get it. Deep down we knew it was a long shot but it fueled the fire to go find it. We jumped right on it to follow the clues that would lead us to the treasure. You could make a number of the clues work so I was feeling a little bit discouraged.”

People were focusing on the latter part of the poem instead of the first part, he said. “We focused on the first part and it seemed like the clue ‘sending a warning’ was about movies. Mike is a huge Lord of the Rings fan and I Googled peaks and found out that Ben Lomond meant Beacon Hill. Mike put that together because Beacon Hill was where they communicated warnings from in Lord of the Rings.”

They scoped out the trail and got really excited, said Ira. “The night before we were all hyped up. We almost went out with headlamps to do a night hike. But instead we told Mike to be at our house at 5 a.m. That took a willingness to get out of bed and enjoy the outdoors.”

“We were meeting at 5 a.m. but I woke up at 4 a.m.,” said Mike. “I met Ira and Rachelle and we drove up to the trailhead. Little did we know there would be road closure signs to the trailhead. We wondered, ‘would they put a treasure on a road that is closed?’ We said ‘let’s try going around to the backside of the (Ogden) canyon.’ We confirmed the road had only recently been closed.”

The trio decided to walk to the trail.

“Ira was driving and I found a side trail we could take to that,” Mike said. “We felt really good about this trail. It was only an extra mile, not to the peak but where we thought it would be.”

They found a very small trail and started the hike from up there, said Ira. “From there we made it to the original trailhead and we were going through the poem as we were hiking. The clue said where two birds feed. There were switchbacks that looked like birds that could fit for going around or through where two birds feed.”

Google maps showed from the top looking down was a parking lot, Ira said.

steed like a car in the parking lot. We were getting pretty excited. We got to the next part and started heading west to turn from the sun. That fell into our poem.”

Things were lining up, he said. “So we thought, ‘so far, so good.’ The trail makes a heart shape but we weren’t too positive if how we were interpreting it was the way they interpreted it.”

The clue said to wave to the weather at the top of the peak, said Ira. “That’s another Lord of the Rings reference. We kept going and not too long after the fork came back together to a tree that was all alone where the poem said you’ll find the treasure under a stone.”

Rachelle got to the tree first and found one or two stones, he said. “They were not big and she turned them over but there was nothing there. We went up a little farther and it opened up into a big field with pretty greenery and tons of stones like the hills all singing from the Sound of Music,” another clue in the poem.

Ira said they all spread out and started looking under all of the stones they could.

“We were getting discouraged and thought we’d call it a day then I saw a little light that flickered off the ground. I caught something that was not natural. I went to look and it was a trail camera. I thought I should go where it is looking. I told Rachelle and Mike, ‘watch this’ and I ran to the rock. I knew there was a good chance we’d found the treasure. I thought, ‘It’s got to be under here.’”

They pulled up the rock and there it was. “We were anything but quiet,” said Ira. “We gave each other huge high fives.

We were like 5-year-olds in the backyard finding a treasure. It was so much fun carrying the box down. We were somehow lucky enough to stumble on this.”

“It wasn’t just luck,” said Rachelle.

“They’re both smart and methodical.”

They already have plans for the $20,000. “All the girls in the family got Tevas and we’re going to take a trip with the money,” said Ira. “Our oldest son has been battling cancer for nine months. We hope to use that money to take him on a trip. That’s the plan.”

“We just had our first baby,” said Mike. “We’ll pay some bills and go on a vacation we can do with a 5-month-old.”

“We’ll do it again next year,” said Ira. “Doing it together as a family through the highs and lows creates memories that will last a long time.”

“That’s the real treasure,” said Mike. l

Davis County has first West Nile case

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com KAYSVILLE—Every summer the West Nile virus seems to crop up somewhere in Utah and now it’s in Davis County. Last month, Davis Mosquito Abatement found the first positive case of West Nile in a pool of water in west Kaysville.

“We set traps at 30 locations a week,” said Davis Mosquito Abatement District Manager Gary Hatch. “We collect them and count and speciate them. We’ve tested 1,100 pools and last week we detected the first positive case.”

There are two types of mosquitoes that they look for, the Culex pipiens and Culex tarsalis, he said. “The Culex pipiens or house mosquito’s habitat is in small containers of water like kiddie pools, catch basins, curb and gutter, small ditches around the house and in smaller water bodies. They’re non aggressive biters. They don’t readily bite people, they typically bite birds but they come in at night and buzz around and are obnoxious but they will bite.”

The Culex tarsalis breed in permanent or semi permanent water sources, said Hatch.

“They’re all over the marshes and a flooded pasture. The Culex tarsalis is what we found in a pool in west Kaysville.”

Hatch said they set 12 traps seven days a week May through September. “We set an additional 24 traps one night a week throughout the county. We knock the mosquitos down, put them into tubes and test them in house.

We sort out into tubes those that are tested.”

Any cases of West Nile are reported to the Davis County Health Department. “We turn it over to them to let the public know,” said Hatch.

Mosquitos bite from dusk to dawn, when the sun goes down and when the sun comes up, he said. “If you’re going to be out, put on repellent and if you can, wear long pants and

To avoid mosquitos, empty any standing water around the house, said Hatch. “Bird baths should be changed every seven to 10 days. Put mosquito eating fish in ornamental ponds. Part of our service is to come out and do that for you just call us.”

Hatch also recommends making sure there are good screens on windows. “People like to sleep with the windows open but they’ll readily come in the house and bite you at night. Be careful with in and out traffic through the door at night too. They congregate around lights and can come inside so you want to minimize that.”

Although West Nile was found, not all species carry it, he said. “We tested 1,100 pools and this was the first case we detected.

About 20,000 mosquitoes have been tested so far. Just because you get bit doesn’t mean it Call carries it.”

West Nile causes flu-like symptoms, said or visit Hatch. “A severe headache, stiff neck, body aches. It’s hard to tell with COVID now but you don’t have a runny nose or cough like COVID.” It can be serious in seniors or the immunocompromised population, he said. “Children generally go through West Nile better than adults do.”

Hatch said they’re out doing extra spraying where the virus was detected. “We’re taking precautions to get as much spraying as we can. Jocelyn and Chris will rock the Kenley Amphitheater on Aug. 24

By Tom Haraldsen | tom.h@davisjournal.com LAYTON—The first time I saw Jocelyn and Chris Arndt perform was on a snowy January night in a small Park City Main Street venue several years ago at the Sundance Film Festival.

From the first notes of Jocelyn’s vocal “Straight Up,” the Paula Abdul standard, they blew me away. I’ve been a fan ever since.

Fast forward to 2022, and this sister-brother duo has captured the collective hearts of listeners nationwide, embarking on an ambitious 32-plus stop tour across the United States that is bringing their classic rock sound to the Kenley Amphitheater in Layton on Wednesday, Aug. 24 as part of the Davis Arts Council’s summer concert series.

Jocelyn, 27, and Chris, 26, were raised in Fort Plain, a small town in upstate New York.

Since the moment Jocelyn began piano lessons as a fourth grader and Chris guitar lessons in third grade, they’ve sung together and launched a steady trajectory into the world of rock music.

“We started performing together when we were in elementary school, and started writing songs together when we were in middle school,” Jocelyn said during an interview from their hotel room in the midst of their summer tour. “That’s when we really caught the bug and started playing our own originals.”

“I wanted to learn piano, but our parents didn’t want Jocelyn and I to have the same instruments because that could make us too competitive with each other,” Chris recalled. “So my dad literally just one day bought me a guitar and said, ‘Alright, we’re going to the guitar lesson place.’ And we did!”

By the time they were in high school, they met the management team that has been with them for over 10 years. Manager David Bourgeois, who also plays drums with their group, has worked with and guided them every step of the way. He’s been joined by seven-time Grammy winning producer Joel Moss. Success has been steady, with Jocelyn and Chris charting four consecutive singles in the Billboard AAA Top 40 charts, taken two records to #1 on the Relix Jambands Top 30 Album Chart, and made a national appearance on NBC’s Today Show.

Their latest single, “Run Away,” was the Billboard Most Added song in Triple A radio in the U.S. during its first week of release.

Sandwiched in between all their musical achievements was college. They both attended and earned degrees from Harvard University, Jocelyn’s in English and Chris’ in computer science.

“Kind of the ends of the spectrum,” Chris said with a laugh.

“It was very challenging, balancing four years of school with being gone literally every weekend,” Jocelyn said. “We got into a rhythm of, ‘Okay, class is Monday through Thursday, then hop on a bus or the T to go to the airport to fly to different venues. We’ll see everybody back on Monday.’”

The hard work has produced eight singles and five full length albums. Even the COVID pandemic, which delayed their nationwide tour plans for two years, didn’t completely throw their plans off track.

“We started getting a lot of regional bookings during the lockdown, and we had some amazing shows,” Jocelyn said. “Now we’re coming back to places we’ve been before, like Utah, as well as seeing new places. We’re anxious to perform in Layton and see many friends we’ve made in Utah during our previous visits.”

Chris said they’ve stayed focused in large part “because of our small town upbringing. Our parents have been super supportive and I think we’ve made them proud.”

“People ask us sometimes, ‘You both have degrees from Harvard. Why are you still doing music?’” Jocelyn said. “And the answer is because we love it. Our parents told us that if you really love something, try as hard as you can to work at it and enjoy it. That’s what we’ve done and what we’re going to keep doing as long as we can.”

Sex trafficking can happen anywhere – even in Utah

went to Bingham High and joined the marines after I graduated,” she said. “I had a head injury during basic training that caused a traumatic brain injury. It caused anger issues and emotional dysregulation.”

After leaving the military, Symons got into a relationship that she believed to be genuine. “I discovered he was still using and he became abusive,” she said. “I cared for him but he was lying. He introduced me to meth and two months in he pulled a gun and put it in my face. I was strong enough to walk away.”

Symons said she was trying to find someone who could tell her what to do because she was self medicating. “That’s when I met the person who trafficked me. Three weeks into the relationship I thought he loved me and he showed me affection. I felt supported and I thought he was helping me with my habit.”

Then he started leaving her places for hours at a time. “He brought me to a person’s place and the guy said ‘you know why you’re here? You're here for payment,’” Symons said. “I was a debt. I was non consequential, not valued as a human.”

Somebody overheard them talking about the drug debt, she said. “He ended up protecting me. He wouldn’t leave me alone.

I realized he loved me and the only thing that distanced me from the trafficker was when he went to jail.”

In 2016 Symons got clean and she has a job. “It takes self accountability and community and a willingness to show up for yourself,” she said. “I got brave enough to tell my story. If I only help one person it’s worth it.” l

SALT LAKE CITY—Most Utahns don’t think sex trafficking takes place here.

That’s something that happens in Mexico or other places not in Davis County – but it does.

Last October, a Bountiful man was arrested on multiple counts of human trafficking and 24 people were arrested in Utah in a sex trafficking ring in March. Last month, the Dean and Bonnie Stephens Memorial Fund gave a $100,000 grant to build Aspen Magdalene House, Utah’s first residential treatment program for sex trafficking survivors.

Jana Christiansen, daughter of Dean and Bonnie Stephens whose uncle is the late Jim Hansen, a Davis County resident, presented the check on her parents’ behalf to board members at a “Sex Trafficking – It Happens Here” luncheon in Salt Lake City.

“I became involved in 2018 with Thistle Farms run by the Episcopal church,” said Christiansen. “They give women who have been trafficked a home where they can live with their peers, receive addiction therapy, counseling, medical and dental services and employment. They’ve been around for 32 years and have had an 80 percent success rate.”

Christiansen said she was interested in their nonprofit. “I thought the foundation could help. I’m in long-term recovery myself. It was in step with what we do.”

Women who have been trafficked don’t always fit the stereotype, she said. “I knew of one woman in San Francisco who was not in poverty at all. Another had a degree in social work and had a wonderful family but became addicted. At first they don’t identify as being trafficked. They say my boyfriend asked me to expose myself to his friend and he’d take money or something similar.”

Working in the family center at the Road Home, Christiansen said she was prepared for the addiction piece but not the sexual abuse of children. “The children were being abused and the women were trafficked. They couldn’t find a job to make any difference. I knew I needed to be involved. I became passionate in 2018.”

There’s enough data that shows it happens here, she said. “We’re really lacking in-home services in the West. There are no long-term treatment programs. Victims are sent to domestic violence shelters. They go from trauma to trauma.”

They need a place to go and heal, said Christiansen. “Love is our business model.

We want this to be a nurturing sanctuary.”

Stacy Symons was a victim of trafficking but it took time for her to recognize it.

“They go through a grooming process to make you vulnerable to be trafficked,” she said. “I have a history of rape as a teen that colored my experience.”

Legislation introduced to study ways to save Great Salt Lake

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com (Editor’s Note—This is one of our continuing series of stories as part of our Davis Journal Water Watchers campaign) ANTELOPE ISLAND—As the Great Salt Lake continues to shrink, federal lawmakers are trying to find a way to save it.

Sen. Mitt Romney and Reps. Chris Stewart and Burgess Owens introduced the Great Salt Lake Recovery Act last month, legislation to study drought conditions and protect the health of the lake long-term.

“The Great Salt Lake is obviously in crisis,” said Stewart. “Half the time when I land in Salt Lake I can see the receding shores. When I look from my home at Antelope Island it’s not an island anymore.”

During the 2022 legislative session, lawmakers passed a bill that designated $40 million for the Great Salt Lake watershed enhancement program. This new legislation builds upon that.

“It will take a huge effort to heal the lake,” Stewart said. “It is going to take years. The state can’t do it by itself.”

“Utah’s iconic Great Salt Lake is currently at the lowest levels ever recorded – for the second time in less than a year,” said Romney. “It is incumbent on us to take action now which will preserve and protect this critical body of water for many generations to come. By authorizing a feasibility study on addressing the historic drought conditions of the Great Salt Lake this legislation complements and elevates the work already being done by the State

of Utah to develop a permanent solution to save our Great Salt Lake.”

“One of the studies would look at pulling water out of the Sea of Cortez and bringing it up to the Great Salt Lake,” said Stewart. “It will not be an easy project.

We’d use a small nuclear reactor to power the pumps. We could also drop water into California lakes. They’re running dry. By filling the lake we’ll have more water on the Wasatch Range and beyond.”

It’s an enormous project to build a pipeline, he said. “It will have to be a concerted effort to make it happen.”

Stewart said they’ve been working with the Utah legislative leadership.

“We’ve talked to the Speaker, Senate President and the Governor. The federal government wants to study this and find a solution. As we hone in on what to do, we’ll work more closely with the state leaders.”

They’re excited to have us involved, he said. “They know they can’t do it alone.”

The Recovery Act will have to go through committee first because it has to be funded, he said. “California has an interest so we hope and expect that some representatives and senators will give us bipartisan support. Not years from now but hopefully during the next funding bill.”

It’s a benefit to the entire West, said Stewart. “It’s a national treasure – not just for Utah.” l

She competed in some junior rodeos but it wasn’t until about two years ago that the 16-year-old West Bountiful girl found her passion in the sport of cowboy mounted shooting (CMS).

“My neighbor helped me get the basics down and then asked me to go to a couple of shoots,” she said. “I fell in love. I love horses and love guns so it was two of my favorite things together. There’s so much adrenaline.”

Cowboy mounted shooting is a timed event where riders must shoot 10 balloon targets without missing while navigating a patterned course using two single action long colt .45 pistols or one pistol/rifle or pistol/shotgun combination.

“We use black powder,” said Rick Johnson, who got involved with the sport four years ago. “No projectile comes out of the guns at all which makes it so the public can come out and watch.”

Johnson has been riding horses for more than 35 years and owns a 20,000 square foot indoor horse arena in Kaysville that he opened up as a practice facility.

“We’d been involved with the 4-H program in Davis County for years then my kids aged out,” he said. “We had this phenomenal facility that was not being used. I did some research and had a conversation with the president of the club and asked him to tell me about the sport.”

He said because of the winter and snow, the event came to a standstill until spring, said

Johnson. “I told him I would open the arena up to him and the club if he would teach me how to do it. Now we go year round in a heated indoor arena.”

Johnson’s son Tyler also competes but took a break from horses when he was younger. “Tyler had grown up with horses but in ninth grade he said ‘I’m done. This is your hobby not mine,’” said Johnson. “He got into high school football, motorcycles and rec sports programs.

Then when I found shooting four years ago I told him to come look at it. He said ‘I’m not a horse guy’ and had little interest.”

Then he got on a horse and tried the guns and he’s been riding ever since, said Johnson.

“He revamped his life into this. He’s probably ranked 15 to 20th in the nation. He’s done extremely well.”

The horses are absolute athletes too, he said. “The horse beneath you has to perform at a high level. Riders have to go down and back in eight to 20 seconds depending on the pattern. There are 70-80 patterns and the horse has to listen to you and move in that direction while you’re targeting balloons at the same time. The horses have to be trained so that the blast above their head doesn’t interfere with their momentum moving forward.”

The sport takes them all over the West to compete. “We’re loading the horse trailer and traveling a lot,” Johnson said. “We’ve gone as far as Oklahoma and next month we’ll be going to Las Vegas, Driggs, Idaho, Wyoming, Heber – it’s non stop. The drought has affected the cost too.

“With hay they’re not getting as many cuts so the price is high. Horse care is expensive no matter what.”

“The shooting community is amazing,” said Faythe Yarbrough, who has been in the sport for about three years. “I couldn’t leave once I started. It’s been a dream my whole life.”

It’s like a family, she said. “Everyone follows each other and they’re never catty or cutthroat. It’s always positive. Everyone’s rooting

for each other and they want you to succeed.”

Cowboy mounted shooting is one of the fastest growing equine sports in the country, said Johnson. “It’s very fun. We’re pushing it from a contestant based event to a spectator event. That’s where we’re headed in the future.”

There is some prize money, he said.

“That’s what we all chase. There are buckles, apparel and other products. Very few people can make money at it though. They do it for the love of the game.” l

Grit and determination helped Sarah Frei pull through after devastating car accident

By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com FARMINGTON—In the summer of 2020, Sarah Frei and her best friends were coming home through Logan Canyon after a fun day at Bear Lake when a drunk driver came around the bend at 70 mph and hit their car head on – changing their lives forever. Frei shared her story recently at a conference for teachers in the Davis School District.

“I was in the back passenger seat,” said Frei. “I was instantly paralyzed from the waist down. The windshield nearly touched my friends’ faces. We were trapped.”

Her friend who was driving broke his femur and her other friend had abdominal and back wounds but managed to get out of the car to see what she could do to help, Frei said. “There were amazing people around us, a former EMT, a CNA, someone from special forces and a pharmacist.

It took an hour for the ambulance to get to us then they took us to the hospital in Logan.”

Frei said she had 60 blood transfusions and was life-flighted to Salt Lake where both of her legs were amputated. “I spent five weeks in the ICU. My parents switched off every other day. They helped me the whole time.”

Before the accident, Frei was a cheerleader at Clearfield High and was also on the golf team. She loved swimming and tumbling and just being outside. “In the hospital I worked on getting stronger,” she said. “I couldn’t do my hair. I couldn’t sit up in bed, I couldn’t roll over. I had to learn almost everything. After my hospital stay I finally got to see my friends.”

A year later, Frei said her family planned a trip to Disney World. “It was the first time I’d flown on a plane since the accident. We went to the Magic Kingdom and the Epcot Center and I did all of the fun rides. I was able to ride everything I wanted to. It was an awesome experience.”

However, when they got to Universal Studios it was a completely different experience, she said. “I was super excited to ride the first ride. I got into the test seat and the worker said ‘your legs have to come right to the edge of the seat.’ I was kind of in shock. I got back into my chair to go to the next ride. My dad lifted me in and scooted me forward. Then they said ‘you have to have knees to ride this ride.’

I went to the next ride and they said ‘you have to have one real leg to ride the ride.’”

All the regulations were different, said Frei. “I was so discouraged that I

couldn’t ride the rides. I came home and I started thinking about what I could do. I wanted to do something crazy. I decided to try skydiving.”

It was totally fine to jump out of a plane, she said. “When I got there they strapped me to another diver. It was the funnest thing I’ve ever done. I could still feel that thrill in my life. It made me just as happy. Changes happen, they shouldn’t hold us back from doing the things we love. You can be happy if you stay determined, even if it’s a completely different way than you thought.”

Frei graduated from high school in 2021. “I wanted to go to college by myself and be independent,” she said. “I was worried, what if I fall out of my wheelchair and there’s no one to help me get back in?

So my dad helped me practice getting off the floor and into my chair. I could never get it. Most people were just amputees but not paralyzed. They hadn’t met my situation.”

Nothing seemed to be working for her to meet that goal before going to col-

lege. “I said to myself, ‘I’m getting from the floor to the chair tonight,’” said Frei.

“I did it. Now I can get into my chair by myself. It’s something no one else can do.

I was so happy and proud. Now I can go to college.”

Everyone has different gifts, she said.

“Sometimes things seem to work for others and not for you. We have to find what works for us. Use those gifts to your advantage. I made a list of things I wanted to be able to do when I left the hospital. It used to be easy and now it’s different. I’m happy with the things I can do. It’s those small goals that led me to where I am.”

Frei said people ask her how she can be so positive. “You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this and you will find strength.”

It’s all because of acceptance, she said. “You have to accept it and move on.

It was an unexpected change that I didn’t want and didn’t ask for. I’m able to do cheer, golf and swim because I have accepted it and moved on from those challenges.” l

early one million miles away from Earth, the James Webb Space Telescope is gazing into space with the intensity of a teenager watching TikTok. The most powerful observatory ever launched (Hubble orbits a measly 340 miles away from Earth), the JWST navigated to its location and deployed its mirrors, telescopes, solar panels and antennas, unfolding like a Transformer in the middle of space.

NASA (Nerding About Space Again) was unsurprisingly geeked about the first images from the JWST and organized a live event to reveal the pictures to the world. I’m an astronomy fangirl, so it made my nerdy

heart happy to see the images unveiled on July 12 during the NASA production.

I couldn’t help but appreciate that Hollywood hadn’t produced the reveal show. It would have been completely different, with movie stars turning it into a literal song-anddance. It would have included a Gorgeous Galaxy red carpet event before the Beautiful People, dressed in sequins and velvet, highlighted the space pictures “right after these messages.”

Instead of talking to actual astrophysicists, the Beautiful People would have interviewed actors like Matthew McConaughey and Tom Hanks, asking them what it was

There would have been glitzy graphics, a soundtrack by Lizzo and brief glimpses of the space images before the cameras returned to the Beautiful People so they could talk about how much they liked planets.

Thankfully, NASA did the whole program themselves. It was like someone handed the high school astronomy club an iPhone and told them to prepare a science project about the Webb telescope. They didn’t use professional spokespeople. They weren’t dressed in formal wear. It was just astrophysicists literally (yes, literally) bouncing with excitement as the world saw the photos for the first time.

There was even a technical glitch when NASA tried to connect to scientists in Canada but couldn’t get through. NASA can relay images from billions of light years away, but can’t connect with colleagues in Montreal.

and black holes and cosmic cliffs and binary stars, which I don’t think are legal in Utah.

It showed a universe teeming with galaxies never seen before. At least not by people on Earth.

The telescope can see through space dust, asteroid rubble and alien trash to get the clearest pictures ever created. Scientists once thought there was only one galaxy in the universe, but one JWST image showed thousands of galaxies in a teensy bit of sky.

Hopefully, this will prove to politicians that the world does not revolve around them.

Webb’s mission is to search for light from the first stars and galaxies that formed the universe after the Big Bang, unless you don’t believe in the Big Bang. In that case, you can sit next to those who think the moon landing was fake, the earth is flat, evolution is a fraud, the Mars mission is bogus, the moon is an alien spacecraft, that it’s NASA’s job to create space hoaxes and we’ve never crossed the Van Allen Belt.

But if you’re a star-nerd, like me, watching something so vast is mind-boggling.

We’re a tiny, blue marble floating through the enormity of space, doing our best not to fall into a black hole or get vaporized by a meteor.

So many evolutionary steps had to happen for us to even be here. What a rare gift.
