MAYOR’S OFFICE
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
AFFORDABLE HOUSING: Facts and Figures The Utah State Legislature has made affordable housing the number one priority for the 2024 legislative session. Murray has been consistently proactive in planning for and providing affordable housing in Salt Lake County. Families with an income of 80% or less of Salt Lake County’s median income level can qualify for subsidized programs. Currently, the median annual income for a family of four in Salt Lake County is $106,000.00. To address the affordable housing shortage, the legislature has selected 26 areas from which cities can choose from to implement their plans. Murray City has selected the following five areas: 1. Investment in the rehabilitation of infrastructure to support moderate-income housing. 2. Reducing regulations for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). 3. Establishing higher density limits in areas near transit corridors. 4. Creating mortgage assistance programs. 5. Revise transit station area plans (Murray has 3 transit stations).

Future areas of focus could include: 1. Redevelopment of underperforming commercial property. 2. Code rewrites to incentivize “starter home” developments. 3. Reducing residential parking requirements. 4. Reducing minimum lot sizes in more zones (5000/4000 sqft). 5. Creative housing approaches (cottage style and townhome). We are pleased to report that presently, Murray City ranks 7th best in Salt Lake County for housing compliance. In fact, considering the size of Murray (12 square miles), we are ranked #1 in all of Salt Lake County. The Utah State Legislature will be in session from January 16 to March 1, 2024. I will be following the legislative updates throughout the session and encourage everyone to reach out to your state representatives whenever you have questions or feedback about policy that affects our city and state.
If the city fails to implement these options, we could lose the ability to apply for certain transportation funding. Murray City is committed to remain in compliance with state requirements avoiding any penalties.
