ith 2023 now in the history books, Murray City stands on the cusp of more transformative change, with multiple projects across different departments setting the stage for a modernized, revitalized urban landscape. The Murray Journal sat down with Murray City’s Chief Administrative Officer Doug Hill to get an in-depth look at the different initiatives unfolding within the city.

Former City Hall/Arlington Elementary Property Redevelopment Nears Fruition The long-anticipated redevelopment of Murray City's former city hall property has now entered its final stages of negotiation with developer Triumph Group, Hill said. "We're at the last minute of negotiations," he said, conveying a sense of urgency with some City councilmembers nearing the end of their terms.

Slated to break ground in late 2024, the mixed-use project will encompass medical facilities, restaurants and residential units.

"The initial phase would likely include a five-story medical tower accompanied by a parking structure," Hill said. Current ordinances restrict building heights, but Hill clarified that the proposed clock/ observation tower would exceed this due to permitted exceptions.

Sprawling over six acres, the development encompasses several city-owned properties, including the former Creekside Alternative School and former school district buildings. However, Hill noted that it excludes some privately-owned establishments like the Fiiz soda shop.

Murray Park Center responds to changing trends in youth sports

ovid-19’s impact has become a familiar refrain, yet its profound effects cannot be overstated. Just as virtual meetings have become a staple in the workplace, the pandemic has similarly reshaped how young people engage in sports. Post-2019, there's been a discernible shift in youth sports trends: the era of multisport participation is giving way to a preference for year-round specialization in one sport, accompanied by an increased interest in solitary pursuits such as gaming and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities.

In a recent interview, Soni Hirasuna, Murray City Recreation director, shed light on the changing landscape of youth participation. With an evident shift toward specialization in one sport and increased interest in individual activities like video games, the Murray Park Center has responded by expanding its offerings.

Trends in Youth Participation Hirasuna begins by outlining the specific changes observed: "More youth are now specializing in one sport in a competitive program year-round versus becoming a multisport athlete." This trend reflects a broader national movement toward specialization in sports. Alongside this, Hirasuna noted, "We have seen an increase in youth participating in individual programs such as video games, reading and STEM focused activities." In response, the center has diversified its offerings, adding classes in chess, science, karate, dance and art, catering to these evolving interests.

Community Impact and Long-Term Implications The downturn in participation has broader implications for the community. Hirasuna expresses concern, stating, "Community engagement and socialization is down among youth. Youth confidence appears a

little lower because through recreation programming friends are made, and confidence is improved as skills are developed and applauded." According to Hirasuna, this highlights the role of recreational programs in fostering social skills and self-esteem among young people.

The Covid-19 Effect When discussing the main reasons behind the drop, Hirasuna points to the Covid-19 pandemic. "Covid was the main factor of the decline in participation numbers," she said, explaining how the restrictions on the number of participants and the suspension of programs under Covid-19 pandemic. “Covid was the main factor of protocols severely impacted participation.

This contrasted starkly with the pre-COVID era, which saw no such limitations.

Learning from Other Communities Hirasuna acknowledges that this is not an isolated issue, observing similar trends in other communities. She suggests that there are lessons to be learned from these areas, noting, "Other communities are trying to re-engage their community by promotions and events to bring them out of their routine of staying home."

Strategies for Re-engagement To combat this decline, Murray City Recreation Center is implementing various strategies, including increased recreation options, year-round program options, increased marketing and affordable programming.

These initiatives aim to make recreational activities more accessible and appealing.

Engaging with Families and Youth Engaging directly with families and young people has been crucial in understanding their interests. "Asking our community has been the best way to receive feedback on interests," Hirasuna said. This approach has led to the introduction of new

family-oriented events like Jigsaw Puzzle Competitions, Family Soccer Golf and special Family Nights.

Vision for the Future Looking ahead, Hirasuna shared her vision: "Creating a chatter in the community that we run the best programs in the area."

This includes training volunteer coaches and continuing to hire knowledgeable staff. "Catering to the individual and making sure we offer something for everyone’s interests" is central to this vision.

programs and special events for our community," she said, emphasizing the belief that a variety of year-round programs will not only cater to participants' preferences but also foster community bonding.

While the challenges posed by the decline in youth participation are significant, the Murray Park Center, under Hirasuna's leadership, actively seeks solutions. By adapting to changing interests, engaging with the community, and innovating in program offerings, the center hopes to work toward rekindling youth engagement and restoring the vibrancy of community life in Murray City. l

Murray's shake-up: Voters boot appointees, elect Hock and Pickett in city council upheaval

I

n a significant shift in local politics, Murray City voters overturned the status quo by rejecting two city council appointees, David Rodgers and Garry Hrechkosy, in favor of elected representatives in the recent municipal elections. While Rosalba Dominguez successfully defended her seat during the Nov. 21 general election, the unseating of Rodgers and Hrechkosy signals a significant shift in the political landscape of Murray, as two newcomers, Gary Pickett and Adam Hock, will take their seats.

Equally significant was the amount spent on the races. Just in District 5’s (southeast Murray) race, the amount raised by both candidates hovers above $50,000.

No previous election for a city council race has racked up such a tab. With excessive amounts being raised and poured into campaigns, one question Murray's political observers raised was why so much money was being spent on a race that attracted 2,760 votes.

Hrechkosy was appointed to the Murray City Council in February 2022, filling a vacancy that arose when Brett Hales vacated his council seat to assume the Mayor's Office. The selection process involved two rounds of voting among the councilmembers. Initially, 12 candidates were considered for the position. As the selection process progressed, Hrechkosy emerged as one of the top three contenders, including Adam Hock, who would later run against Hrechkosy in the municipal elections and was ultimately chosen by the council for the appointment.

According to Hrechkosy, he is the Vice President of Accounting and Controller for MX Technologies. On the ballot, he chose to have his name listed as Garry “CPA” Hrechkosy. Financial disclosures made

by Hrechkosy indicated that he raised $27,305. Campaign contributors included State Sen. Kathleen Riebe, who was also running for Congress to fill Chris Stewarts' vacancy, former Salt County Mayor Ben McAdams and Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera.

Challenging Hrechkosy, Hock lists he is an educator at Murray High and Hillcrest Junior High. According to Hock, he has master’s degrees in religion and American history from Brigham Young University and the University of Utah.

Hock raised over $23,126 to compete for the seat. Donors were a bipartisan mix, including the Central Federation of Labor union and Equality Utah.

Clark Bullen, candidate for District 3, said, “I am amazed that over $50k was raised in District 5. I wonder how that compares to other council races in the

county. That is a surprising amount of interest and investment in a council race.”

While District 5 was a relatively civil affair, Hrechkosy’s campaign signs urged voters to “Re-elect” when he had actually been appointed to his office.

Voters chose Hock with 1,552 votes (56.23%) over Hrechkosy with 1,208 votes (43.77%). After his win, Hock posted on social media, “I also want to acknowledge my opponent, Garry Hrechkosy, for a hardfought campaign. I believe that our shared dedication to public services is a testament to the strength of our democratic process.”

Hrechkosy posted, “We came up short, but I can proudly say that we left it all on the field. The cards were stacked against us, but we persevered and kept on pushing. We knocked on over 4,000 doors, raised over $25k, and made hundreds of phone calls. I am so thankful to everyone who helped us and gave me encouragement. This is not the end. It is just time for a break to regroup and forge ahead. We are not sure what is next, but be sure Utah and the Hrechkosys will be out there again.”

In District 1's (northwest Murray) election, the scenario closely resembled that of District 5. Rodgers became a city councilmember through appointment following Phil Markham's departure in July to lead Murray's Community and Economic Development department. This vacancy originally opened when the elected councilor, Kat Martinez, moved in December 2022, leading to Markham's appointment.

Adding to the intrigue, Paul Pickett, Rodgers' electoral opponent, had been a finalist for the same seat that Rodgers eventually filled. The decision to appoint Rodgers was made in an unconventional manner; his name was selected from a hat due to the council's inability to reach a majority decision on a replacement candidate.

Rodgers, in his candidate profile, indicated that he recently graduated from college with a master’s in public administration and was working as a transportation planner for Salt Lake County. For the general election, Rodgers raised $3,960 for his campaign bid.

Contesting Rodgers, Pickett attended

the U.S. Air Force Academy and holds a master’s degree from Washington State University. According to Pickett, he has taught secondary school for 22 years.

Pickett was close to Rodgers with $3,950 in campaign contributions.

Pickett easily won his race with 696 votes (59.28%) to Rodgers with 478 votes (40.72%).

Dominguez's re-election presents an intriguing case. In the District 3 (northeast and central Murray) primary election, Dominguez faced four challengers. While she secured 41% of the vote in the primary election, the other challengers combined claimed 59% of the vote, indicating widespread dissonance among voters.

Emerging as Dominguez’s challenger was Clark Bullen, who collected 28% of primary voters, with many of the other primary candidates endorsing Bullen. District 3 contains downtown Murray, which has received much focus due to large-scale plans to reshape the area.

Dominguez's candidate profile identifies her as the Creative Director and owner of Table 22 and professional development coordinator at Utah Afterschool Network.

In her campaign for the general election, Dominguez amassed $7,977 in funds. Notably, her campaign finance report shows that she received over 90 contributions from anonymous donors. However, the majority of these were small donations, which, according to state law, are allowed to be filed without disclosing the donors' names, but the number of anonymous listings exceeded all candidates combined.

Bullen, who lists himself as Director of Implementation at CUI Benefits on his candidate profile, raised $2,447 for the campaign.

In Murray’s most tightly contested race, Dominguez’s 1,095 votes (52.69%) edged Bullen’s 983 votes (47.31%).

Bullen, after the end of the race, said, “I'm so grateful for my supporters who trust that I will fight for their vision of Murray.

I'll keep advocating for their voice from the outside and encourage more to join the conversation. I loved getting to know so many of our neighbors and look forward to meeting even more. When asked 'What next?' I say, I'm not going anywhere. You can't get rid of me that easily."

Continued from front page ray's heritage, Hill addressed rumors of reusing bricks from the original City Hall. "It's not a requirement from the city," he stated, indicating the decision ultimately lies with the developers.

Murray City and the developers have not firmed up anything about using the projects parking for Murray City events, such as Murray Theater performances.

Hill, backed by the Redevelopment Agency, projects that demolition and construction could commence around mid-2024.

This follows the developer's completion of due diligence over the coming months.

Downtown Area Plan to Shape Future of Pivotal Block One In contrast to the former City Hall site, the crucial Block One area (4800 South and State Street) currently has no concrete development plans. "There's been some ideas circulating about what to do with Block One, but nobody has taken that on yet," Hill said.

The historic Townsend home, initially considered for relocation, will remain in place due to the prohibitive costs of moving. "The plan, at least for now, is to leave the Townsend home where it is," Hill said.

The city is also awaiting the completion of a downtown area plan, led by a consultant with input from a citizen committee comprising property owners and other stakeholders. "The plan should be finished later this month," Hill noted, adding that the committee is working on final touches. This plan will guide future zoning and development decisions for Block One. One significant aspect under consideration is the height restriction. "Currently, the height is allowed up to 10 stories on that block, but there seems to be recommendations to lower that height," Hill said, indicating a potential shift in the development approach.

As for the immediate future of Block One, Hill said, "It's possible that the city could start marketing the plan later this year."

He cautioned, however, that actual decisions might not materialize until 2025, given the thorough process involved in reviewing and approving proposals.

The question of utilizing the space in the interim also arose. While various ideas have been suggested, including using it as a food truck court, Hill stated that "there are no plans for anything right now." The focus remains on a more permanent and strategic use of the space.

Murray Chapel Amidst Downtown Shuffle Currently, the Murray Chapel is not officially for sale, but the city council has passed a resolution indicating an intent to sell. "Before we put it up for sale, we have to still do the surveying of the property," Hill clarified, outlining the steps needed before any sale can proceed. There is also ongoing discussion about whether to sell the Chapel as one parcel or two, as the city owns additional property south of the Chapel.

One possible solution the city is negotiating is to see whether the Tea Rose Din-

er would be interested in purchasing it. The diner sits across the street from the Murray Chapel.

The idea of having a restaurant in the downtown area and keeping the Tea Rose Garden in Murray has been well-received.

"Most people like the idea of having a restaurant in the downtown area," Hill said.

Murray Mansion Museum Renovating Murray City’s historic Murray Mansion Museum into a showpiece for its heritage has proved challenging, beset by unexpected issues related to its age. “They keep uncovering more problems like electrical issues, HVAC issues, boiler issues, and structural problems as they get into the walls,” Hill said. While the contractor remains optimistic for May 2024 completion, others believe meeting this target could be ambitious if further setbacks emerge.

An essential aspect of the renovation is the addition to the north of the mansion, primarily to enhance accessibility. "It's more a lift than an elevator and provides restrooms for the museum," Hill said. This addition addresses the need for public and ADA-accessible restrooms, which the existing facilities lacked.

As for the museum's current functioning, Hill says it has been mostly mothballed during the renovation. "They've been slowly moving items over to the Murray Mansion over the last six months," he noted, indicating a gradual transition of the museum's artifacts to the new location.

Murray Theater Renovation Similar renovation troubles have slowed the revival of Murray Theater, considered the new jewel of the city’s cultural assets. "They keep finding problems, the latest one being a storm drain issue," Hill said. Attempts to address the eroded foundations stumbled upon an abandoned storm drain, necessitating re-engineering of the water flow.

Hill placed the revised reopening timeline between next May and October, contingent on resolving this latest complication without busting budgets that are nearing their limits. Regarding future programming, Hill mentioned that a consultant was hired to conduct a feasibility study to identify potential users of the theater. "I have not seen any reports on the recommendations, so I think it's still being studied," he said, indicating that the theater's future programming remains under consideration.

Acknowledging the venue's need for more parking, Hill highlighted efforts to negotiate agreements with nearby property owners. The city did purchase land behind the theater for contractor access and ADA parking requirements. However, fundraising has lagged hopes so far, despite some large donations. "It’s been a bit of a disappointment," Hill said.

Lastly, Hill discussed the theater's iconic marquee. The new marquee will be a recreation of the original design, as opposed to the modified version previously removed.

Historic Armory Reimagined as Creekside

Cottage Event Space Further breathing new life into Murray's landmarks is the renovation of the Armory Motor Pool building into the Creekside Cottage at Murray Park event venue, scheduled for completion around mid-2024. “There’s been talk of giving it a name other than the Armory, primarily because the name is somewhat misleading (It served as the National Guard’s motorpool shop)," Hill said, explaining the name change.

Currently under contract, renovations are actively underway with an expected completion date around July or August of this year.

The modifications aim to transform the former motor pool building of the Armory into a versatile, indoor pavilion-like space. "It could be used for anything from birthday parties to luncheons, to receptions," Hill said, highlighting the facility's adaptability.

The significant renovations include a new roof, windows replacing the garage door openings, and an interior designed for flexibility and functionality. The main hall, restrooms, a catering kitchen, storage, and a

smaller, separate room for varied uses are all part of the redesign. A pergola with a patio adjacent to the creek and a trail connecting to Murray Park enhance the outdoor appeal.

With a projected capacity of around 300 people when seated at tables, the Creekside Cottage is poised to become a new hub for community events and gatherings. "It's like an indoor pavilion that people can rent," Hill said, indicating the city's intention to make the space widely available for public use.

While the city will gain an indoor pavilion, it also will lose storage space. To compensate for the loss, the city plans to build a $2-million new industrial shop area by the Murray Parks and Recreation Administration offices.

Phased Plan to Rebuild Key Public Works Infrastructure Murray City's plan to develop a new Public Works building is gaining momentum following the approval of bonding for the project. Hill discussed the next steps for this significant infrastructure development in the city.

The first step in the process, as Hill outlined, is to sell the bonds to raise the necessary funds. "That'll be happening over the next couple of months," he said. Once the funds are secured, the city will embark on a phased approach to the project, led by Public Works Director Russ Kakala, with an allocated budget of about $20 million.

The initial phase will focus on constructing a new administration building. "That's probably the highest priority," Hill said. This development comes after the demolition of an existing smaller building, known as the break room building, which was carried out by the city's crews.

Employees of the Public Works department are currently housed in a two-story office building, which will also be demolished as part of the redevelopment. "They'll stay in there until the new administration building is taken down," Hill said. Following this, the city plans to start construction on vehicle storage space for shops, trucks, wastewater and stormwater vehicles.

Regarding detailed plans for the new

buildings, Hill clarified that while conceptual plans exist, more advanced architectural and construction drawings are yet to be developed. "They'll be going through that process here for the next few months to select an architect and a contractor," he said, indicating that the project is still in the early stages of design.

Power Grid Changes to Impact most Murray Power Customers Bringing Murray's infrastructure up to modern standards is also the motivation behind two major Murray Power initiatives. A vital substation sinking into an old landfill requires urgent rebuilding, possibly through relocation or stabilization. This substation is a main one for the city, making its stability and functionality critical.

On the cost front, the substation rebuilding project is budgeted for around $2 million, half of which includes a transformer. The city is currently in the planning and engineering phase for this project, with construction expected to start this year.

stalling new meters throughout the city. The current meters require physical proximity for reading and control. The new automated meters, set for installation next year, will allow remote reading and control from a central location. "Everything will be read at a central location, and we'll be able to control the meters, turn them on and off," Hill said. This technological upgrade will facilitate immediate usage readings, aiding in conservation efforts and providing real-time data to residents through an app.

The rollout of these new meters, however, faces challenges due to supply chain issues. "There's still a backlog on getting these meters ordered," Hill said, adding that the Power Department had to return an incorrect shipment. The implementation could take up to two years, with the city's own crews carry-

ing out the installation.

Library and Senior Center The city has decided against merging the Library and Senior Center. Although a study was commissioned to explore solutions for the challenges faced by both facilities, including a potential merger, Hill indicated that the costs associated with such a merger exceed the city's budget constraints.

At the end of 2024, Murray residents could expect to see a theater, reception hall and a museum in operation. Murray Power customers will also be able to monitor the power consumption habits closely. Likewise, Murray residents will see the Murray Chapel change ownership and say their final goodbyes to the former Arlington Elementary School. l

Beyond textbooks: How the maker movement is changing education, fostering creativity and accessibility

I

n Midvale, a sixth-grade girl curiously was examining the workings of Spheros, small, wheeled robots. In Murray, a junior high boy used wood, glue and string to craft a catapult.

In South Jordan, an elementary-aged girl was looking forward to creating a 3D butterfly using Tinkercad.

Makerspaces allow opportunities for hands-on making, creating, designing and innovating that bring individuals together in a variety of mediums, including robotics, textile crafts, woodcrafts and electronics. Commonly found at some libraries, museums, colleges and at the Utah STEM Action Center, the number of these spaces for open exploration have increased, especially in schools, which has given students equal access as well as gain skills in STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

“Makerspaces need to be available and accessible,” said teacher Beth McKinney, who helped open the makerspace in Murray’s Hillcrest Junior High in an existing classroom this fall. “It’s important for kids to have a place where they can explore their own interests, talents, curiosities and have that experience on their own with the freedom to do it in a safe, controlled setting. Many students might not have the tools, the confidence or the opportunity to do so, so it’s important we have a safe space where any student can create and many learn best by doing, with their own hands.”

Makerspaces are known as places where people, or “makers,” create, or “make,” projects using a variety of hands-on and digital tools.

The junior high’s makerspace offers art supplies, robotics, a LEGO wall, 3D printing, K’NEX, speed and logic puzzles and more.

Students opt to come to the space during an enrichment class period once per week as well as during the after-school program.

“It’s comfortable here; I’m free to make my own choices, but there’s help if I need it,” she said.

The concept of makerspace is not new, according to Utah STEM Action Center’s director Tamara Goetz.

“Makerspaces have been around a long time,” she said. “They were a place for people with common interests to tinker and build and that purpose still exists. What we’re seeing now is not a resuscitation of an old trend or fad of having a neighborhood tinkering spot in somebody’s garage. It’s become a way of learning and a way of thinking that is beginning to integrate how we teach kids and how we inspire kids. It’s the new way to do project-based learning; it’s maker learning, the idea of learning how to do a design process of iteration to create something to solve

a problem that is important to you.”

Goetz said there is an increased momentum around makerspaces.

“Our future as a global economic leader depends on students having the ability to be innovative with technology,” she said. “Maker learning helps to build 21st century skills and helps students not just consume technology but develop it.”

At Hawthorn Academy, a charter school in South Jordan, teacher Stephen Mesker said it’s those 21st century skills of identifying problems and finding solutions that is being taught in the school’s 3D Design Club, a precursor to what he hopes will evolve into a makerspace for its studentbody.

“We teach them the skills, but the hope is to get everybody involved in STEM and get them prepared for future jobs,” he said.

“Many manufacturing jobs now use 3D design and 3D printing and other makerspace skills that we need to provide that education and opportunity to our students.”

That is key Goetz said.

“Makerspaces are more than just a bunch of equipment with no real intent. What’s important, particularly in schools, is to address how can the makerspace aligns and integrates into the mission of the school, more than just a place to tinker,” she said. “It also needs to adapt with the growth of the school.”

Such was the case with the STEM Action Center, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. After moving out of an office downtown to its South Salt Lake location where space was provided as a solution to the many FIRST LEGO teams that needed a lo-

cation to practice and build, the staff realized its potential when “a couple little girls would come by and knock on the window and ask what we were doing. That led us to realize there was a much greater potential space in our community, so we established an open tinker time.”

They also adapted during Covid-19 pandemic. “Covid was the main factor of, to check out activity kits to teachers, which helped them reach many more kids, Goetz said. That led to creating Pop-Up Maker Faires, which are brought into schools to provide free, hands-on STEM activities that students can bring home. The Center also awards grants, which help establish programming, innovation and makerspaces in schools.

While Hawthorn, which purchased a dozen 3D printers from such a grant, began its club last year, others, like Channing Hall, a charter school in Draper, have been operating a makerspace for years and have incorporated lessons into the classroom. It was designated as a state platinum STEM school last spring.

Goetz said that not all school makerspaces are the same.

“Some schools have maker carts, some set up in a library; it can take on different formats and versions, depending upon what schools want. Some schools have a designated makerspace. What we’re seeing is the number of schools are trying to figure out what to do with the library (with the pivot to more online materials) and makerspace is coming into the conversation more and more

for those schools,” she said.

In Canyon School District, some schools, such as Midvalley Elementary and the recently rebuilt Union Middle, have designated rooms as makerspaces, while Midvale Middle’s library is used as a makerspace during lunchtimes, at a time when it’s accessible to all students.

“It started here because I like kids to be kids; I want them to know how to play with their hands, how to create and how to solve problems on their own,” teacher librarian/ media specialist Judy Rembacz said. “Makerspace teaches kids how to think. They are in the driving seat, being empowered and passionate about their own learning. They figure out how to create and if something goes wrong, how to make it work. They learn from failure and that’s a good thing. I also like how this connects them with their peers and with the school and that we’re giving this opportunity to all our students.”

That is what teacher Wendie Nielson, at Bella Vista Elementary in Cottonwood Heights, wants students to discover.

“They’re learning cooperation, collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving,” she said. “When something doesn’t work, they got to change their thought process to hopefully make it work the next time.”

Fifth-grader Anna Armstrong was learning about coding using an Intelino smart train.

“It’s going to help with my future; I’m seeing all the things I can do with coding,” she said. “I want to be an astronaut, so I’ll need to know a lot about computers and coding. In makerspace, there’s science and math and communication as we work on things together, but a lot of it is trying to figure it out on my own.”

Bella Vista’s first-year principal Angi Holden already has seen an increase of STEAM learning at her school.

“We offer STEAM enrichment with after-school programming, and we have our STEAM Fridays where students rotate every five weeks through lessons around engaging topics created by our teachers,” she said. “Our goal is to expand to become a STEM-designated school, so students are prepared for the workforce, beyond academics.”

Preparing all students in STEAM education is the goal behind the grants received

by Canyons School District’s Digital Teaching and Learning Specialist Chandra Martz, who was overseeing a family STEAM night at Midvale Elementary.

When Martz was in high school, she remembers being the only female in a STEM class of 25 students.

“It always bothered me, so I want to get more girls into STEM. Canyons’ goal is to get every student college and career ready, so we’re trying to do that through STEAM,”

she said. “I want as many kids as possible to be able to see STEAM in their future. I want girls to be able to see that they can be engineers. I want children of color to see that they can get a job in the field that pays well.

I feel a lot of people in some of our Canyons communities are working three jobs just to try to make ends meet. There are careers that their children can enter, and they can make $100,000 out of high school. I just want them to be able to see that this could be their future; this opportunity is for everyone.”

Martz, and others, are rolling out family STEAM nights in elementary schools, where they bring in kits of 12 activities with challenges that tie into curriculum standards.

“I love that they went through all the activities to align it in math and science standards,” Goetz said. “They have signs at each station so teachers know this challenge aligns to certain standards and they can take that back to the classroom to build off of it; and parents are given open-ended questions to ask to foster exploration with daily activities at home.”

Those kits, which were first originated

by Utah Valley University, then expanded on and provided by Utah STEM Action Center, are available statewide through its network that includes several state higher education institutions, independent makerspaces and the Utah State Library Division. Jordan School District already has STEM activity tubs available for check-out to schools and

Granite School District is creating its own set for more accessibility, Goetz said.

At the recent Midvalley Elementary family STEM night, parent Brady Smith brought his first-grade daughter, Amelia.

“I want her to stretch her mind in different ways in science and math and find the joy in learning and exploring through these cool activities,” he said. “I want her to have a mindset and a skill set that solves problems and thinks through things; I want her to be able to create and decipher.”

Another part of Canyons’ program is establishing makerspaces with supplies in every middle school. Five of the eight schools already are in the process or have implemented makerspaces. STEAM squads are being introduced to elementaries and coding clubs will extend to middle schools next year.

“The whole purpose of this grant is to give to students that may not have opportunity,” Martz said. “Some kids aren’t able to go to after-school programs, so we want to give opportunity.”

That opportunity is extending to teacher training as well as Canyons’ teachers becoming STEM-endorsed, she said.

In addition, the STEM Action Center offers workshops weekly for teacher professional development in technical expertise.

“Teachers walk out with lesson plans that have been facilitated in the workshops and can incorporate what they’ve learned into their classrooms,” Goetz said.

Canyons District Elementary STEM Specialist Cynthia Lloyd hopes that makes a difference.

“With these resources, we’re hoping teachers use them with their curriculum,” she said. “We are noticing that kids are needing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

It’s not just STEAM. It’s also sitting down and reading informational text. They’re not getting what they need out of it. One of the best ways to get kids to learn is through these STEAM activities because they’re highly engaging; we can teach those literacy skills along with these problem-solving and critical thinking skills.”

Goetz agrees.

“Makerspaces nurture curiosity,” she said. “It’s a place to create, a place to learn to invent and design, and a place to fail and repeat. We learn from failures. We learn to work as teams, alongside other fellow makers, because we’re trying to solve problems together. Communication and organization are a big deal as is resilience. These skills can be incorporated into academic learning. This aligns to the standards and it’s cross-disciplinary. Makerspaces are a welcoming place for everyone to create and solve what is important to them. It’s what’s called ‘a low floor and a high ceiling’ so it provides a huge potential for growth in learning.” l

Murray’s AuClaire off to impressive start in senior season

W

hen Mia AuClaire first stepped onto the court for the Murray High School girls basketball team, she was still in middle school.

Now, three years later, the senior is breaking records for the Spartans.

AuClaire, a 5-foot-8-inch guard is a fouryear starter for Murray, having held the position since her freshman year. AuClaire began this season as the leading returning scorer for Murray, having finished second on the team last with behind now-departed senior Iyana Beh. AuClaire has improved on last season’s 12.5-point average to pouring in 18.6 in her first eight games of this season. She had a season-high 29 points, including four three-pointers, against Farmington on Dec. 12. In the first eight games, she reached 20 points six times. In two of those games, she nailed five three-pointers (against Kearns and Provo in back-to-back contests Nov. 30 and Dec. 1). AuClaire is making nearly three shots from behind the threepoint line every game. She also 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists an outing.

“I’m working to improve my consistency, which has been going amazing so far this season,” she said.

Her play shouldn’t be surprising. She has been productive since her first year with Murray.

AuClaire paced Murray in scoring as

a freshman in 2020-21 with 13.4 points per game, a season in which she connected on 54 three-pointers. She also was the leading scorer as a freshman, a rare feat, by tallying 10.7 points a game. She also averaged 1.6 steals per game that season. As of our press time, AuClaire had scored nearly 1,000 points and made 151 three-pointers as a Spartan.

AuClaire developed a love for basketball at a young age and that joy has only increased.

“The first time I ever touched a basketball in third grade, I knew I had a passion for it, and I knew it would become such a huge impact in my life,” she said. “What got me interested was watching my dad teach my brother how to play, and from there, I took off.”

In her years of playing, she said she loves the teamwork aspect of the game most. She also loves the feeling of playing against other players and striving to do her best.

“I enjoy the competition and most of all, the family that is built,” she said.

Murray got off to a 4-4 start this season.

They will compete in Region 10 of Class 4A against some new foes, having previously been a member of Class 5A’s Region 6. Murray was 9-13 a year ago and 5-7 in Region 6, good enough for fifth place. During her sophomore year, the Spartans finished 6-16 overall. They were 13-10 in 2020-21.

Though the team has had some ups and downs, AuClaire has loved being a part of the Murray team. Her appreciation for the team goes beyond wins and losses.

“Murray is such an amazing program and has really let me showcase my talent, which I am so grateful for,” she said. “The people are so kind, and the coaching staff is one of a kind.”

As a player, AuClaire has been a prolific scorer. She is a tremendous shooter and also possesses excellent dribbling skills. Being able to handle the ball well has enabled her to maneuver past opponents and quickly advance the ball. She not only has the playing abilities a coach wants, but she has some critical intangibles too, such as being a leader and example.

“I feel like I play a big leadership role for my team,” she said. “I am always trying to be positive.”

There are still plenty of games left in the season for the Spartans to work toward posting a winning record for the first time in three years. Murray finished December with a road game at 5A opponent Woods Cross on Dec. 19 and an away contest with 6A foe Davis after Christmas on Dec. 28.

Once 2024 begins, the Spartans will start the Region 10 schedule, beginning with a clash with Cottonwood on the road Jan. 5. The Re-

gion 10 home opener is five days later against Stansbury.

AuClaire wants to have a good mindset every game and put forth everything she has.

She also wants to capture the region title, something Murray girls basketball hasn’t done since the 2008-09 season. In Murray’s way of winning a region championship are Cottonwood, Tooele, Jordan, Park City, Hillcrest and Stansbury. Only Park City was with Murray in Region 6 a year ago.

“The biggest goals I have for myself this season is to bring effort, energy and positivity every time I step on the court,” she said. “The biggest goal I have for my team is to win region, which I am feeling so good about.”

Achieving these aspirations won’t come without hard work. AuClaire’s success will depend on how well the girls work together and come together as a unit in practice and games.

“For us to be successful, we need to communicate more and push each other to our limits in the game and at practice. Working hard for each other will get us far.”

By the time AuClaire’s stint is over at Murray, she might end up being the leading scorer in Murray’s history. She has drawn interest from major colleges and will soon decide where she intends to continue the next stage of her career. She also has some career goals planned, and they will keep her close to athletics.

“I am planning on playing college ball after high school and will announce where after the season,” she said. “I want to major in sports psychology to help athletes overcome mental blocks.” l

Celebrating 100 years of Murray City Park

W

hen you turn 100, you had better throw a big party. Since its founding in 1924, Murray Park has been the setting for countless birthday parties, making it only fitting that it receives a spectacular birthday bash of its own.

Throughout 2024, Murray City plans to host a series of events and festivities, turning the entire year into a tribute to the park's century of community service and joy.

“We are preparing a publication for this celebration highlighting the first 100 years of the park. We are trying to gather stories and photos for this publication, and it will be printed

by June 15,” Murray City Cultural Arts Director Lori Edmunds said.

Nestled along the banks of Little Cottonwood Creek, Murray City Park has served as the hub of recreation and entertainment for Murray residents for a century. Besides hosting countless soccer and baseball games and swimming competitions, the park has a rich history featuring diverse events. These include rodeos and horse racing, and it even once housed the Murray Nine, a professional baseball team that clinched a league championship. Additionally, the park gained international recognition during the 2002 Olympics by hosting a preliminary soccer match between Germany and Kazakhstan at the County Ice Center.

Murray City Park has been a stage not just for sports but also for the arts. The park's Murray Amphitheater was where pop star David Archuleta first performed on stage, marking the beginning of his career. The park has also hosted legendary performers like Johnny Cash during the Salt Lake County Fair. Adding to its diverse history, two elephants named Bunny and Willy spent a summer grazing in the park.

The park's origins date back to 1918, when city leaders first discussed acquiring land for a public park. In 1924, during Mayor Isaac Lester's administration, the dream became a reality when the city purchased eight acres from local farmers Sherman Freeze, William Smith and Henry Thayne for just over $8,000.

Situated in a flood plain, Murray Park was once a popular swimming spot at a bend in Little Cottonwood Creek. One of the park's earliest photographs features American Hill, located south of the Murray Park Center. This area is historically notable for having four wooden houses, rumored to have been places of ill repute that catered to smelter workers employed across the street.

The park quickly became a popular gathering spot, with the first official event being Arbor Day tree planting in April 1924, attended by many locals. Throughout the late 1920s, amenities like drinking fountains, a flagpole, cobblestone walls, globed locust trees, and lawn sprinklers transformed the space into an attractive recreation destination.

One of the few reminders still in the park is a stone drinking fountain provided at the park’s dedication by the Murray City volunteer fire department.

In 1928-29, the city built Utah's first free public swimming pool, measuring 40 by 60 feet, in the park. The pool was so popular that a separate wading pool for children was added in 1930.

Utah Supreme Court Justice Richard Howe recalled that the pool was fed with water from the creek. “It was really cold most of the time,” said Howe.

The Great Depression did not halt improvements to Murray Park. In the 1930s, projects undertaken by federal work programs like the Civil Works Administration, Federal Emergency Relief Administration, and Works Progress Administration expanded park facilities substantially. Notable additions included a 1,500-seat stone stadium for softball, new tennis courts, bridges, roads and lighting allowing for nighttime activities.

Prior to the WPA cobblestone softball park, the creek carved a natural grandstand that served as Murray’s professional baseball team playing field. The team was going to host the Chicago White Sox in 1910, but spring flooding made the field unplayable, and the game was moved to Salt Lake City.

Starting in 1938, the park underwent the

first of several significant expansions when an additional 12 acres were purchased to accommodate the new county fairgrounds. The Salt Lake County Fair debuted there in September 1939, kicking off a more than 60-year tradition, with the fair calling Murray home until 1999.

Buildings like exhibit halls, stables and a racetrack transformed a large section of the park into a fairground.

For Aleen Hale Holt, Murray Park was a destination worth the effort. "Riding my bike up and down the hills to get to the park was quite the workout," she recalls. Summers were spent swimming, ice skating, tubing the river, and enjoying the County Fair. "Murray Park was the hub of my childhood and even my children's lives," she adds.

In the postwar period, as Murray's population boomed, permanent park staff were hired for the first time. Ballfields, playgrounds, and picnic spots saw heavy use by community groups and families. In 1950, the Murray Women's Club sponsored a War Memorial Peace Garden, one of the first of its kind. Beautification continued with the 1961 opening of the Murray City Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, spearheaded by resident Joan Hardle.

When a traveling carnival went out of business, the park inherited a Ferris wheel and rideable toy train that had been used for decades.

Paula Rasmussen recalls a distinctive feature of the park. "The big silver airplane was a highlight for many of us. It's a memory that brings back the joy of simpler times," she says.

During a unique period in its history, Murray City Park featured an unforgettable attraction: a real Air Force airplane repurposed as a playground slide. This aircraft, a T33 training version of the F80 Shooting Star, was donated to the city by the Air Force, thanks to the efforts of Park Commissioner L. Clark Cushing.

Transported from Hamilton Air Force Base in California to Hill Air Force Base, it was then disassembled and delivered to Murray on a Utah National Guard truck, with an escort provided by Murray police and the Utah Highway Patrol. This iconic plane, a childhood favorite for many, was later removed around 1990 and now resides at the Hill Air Force Museum.

Recreational facilities grew in the 1960s-70s as well, with updates to playground equipment, a new bathhouse, a heated swimming pool, and an outdoor skating rink installed in the old pool. Ballfields multiplied, notably the Murray City Baseball Field finished in 1960 after a volunteer-led fundraising campaign. The field was later renamed Ken Price Field to honor a key contributor. The field would host the Babe Ruth League World Series in 2009 and 2012.

In 1967, the city hired architect A.L. "Ab" Christensen to design a 17-acre eastward expansion of the park. His novel "earth sculptured" plan used landscaped mounds rather than fences to divide areas. Developed sections included soccer fields, picnic pavilions and playgrounds threaded through wooded sections preserved in their natural state.

Murray's famous sleigh riding hill was, in fact, not a natural feature of the park but the creation of numerous dump truck visits to the park. Janeene Brown Timothy reminisces about the thrilling sled rides down the big hill. "We used old wood sleds with runners, which were much faster and more exciting than what kids use today," she said.

The park's cultural offerings grew in the 1970s-80s. The amphitheater hosting ballet, theater and orchestra performances was constructed in 1983 on former farmland donated by the Sardella family.

Murray educator Kristin Loulias, who is a descendant of the Sardella family recalls the city taking part of her land through eminent domain. In 1990, her grandmother sold additional land to the city for the amphitheater.

Loulias also sheds light on lesser-known aspects of the park. "There used to be quicksand pools near the park offices," she reveals.

Additionally, she mentions the significance of three artesian wells near the park's offices, used historically for irrigation and home use.

Regarding the park, as it stands today, Loulias expresses mixed emotions. "While we would have loved to keep the farm, Murray Park has become a beautiful, integral part of Murray. Its immaculate maintenance makes it a safe and enjoyable place for everyone," she said.

Loulias hopes for more recognition of the land's history. "Parts of the old park have plaques about the families that lived and farmed here. I wish the same for our farm area," she said.

“In the late 70s and 80s, they had metal slides. It was like a spiral staircase leading up to the top. There was a little stream/creek that you could actually walk in and cool off. We had a lot of picnics there back in the day. The hills we would roll down and get so dizzy,” Brandy Linam Bowman said.

Playground equipment that seems implausible in this era of litigation was installed on the newly acquired portion of the park. West of the pavilion, a long slide took riders off one side of the pavilion hill, and a short, steep pipe slide sat on the other. To the east of the pavilion sat a brick igloo. The entrance would sometimes fill with water, leaving kids to enter from the dome on top. Parents would have to fish out small youngsters trapped in the igloo as they were not able to jump out.

Installations of public art went up as well, like the 48-foot-tall Chief Wasatch sculpture (part of the Trail of the Whispering Giants) erected at the east entrance in 1985. There was

also an eagle sculpture. Carved of cottonwood tree trunks, the city gave up on trying to preserve the eagle when it started to rot, but the city has invested significantly to preserve Chief Wasatch.

In the 1980s, the city installed two large water slides that attracted thousands of swimmers; the wait to ride the slides stretched longer than the slides themselves. The city would later install indoor slides for easier maintenance, but the base of the waterslide hill still sits south of the outdoor pool.

Though the county fair relocated in 1999, two major recreational facilities were developed on the former fairgrounds in its wake. Salt Lake County built an Olympic practice ice center in 1999, while Murray City added the Murray Park Center gym and pool complex in 2001.

Continuous renovations, from playground updates to parking lot expansions, aim to keep the park relevant for 21st-century users while preserving its historic character.

Murray City’s culminating event will be on June 15, where there will be a whole-day birthday celebration. According to Edmunds, there will be history tours, plein air artists, music groups, and a car show.

“We will invite the attendees to go to the amphitheater for a free showing of ‘South Pacific’ (the first play performed in the amphitheater). Rounding out the event will be celebratory fireworks. We are also pursuing having the park listed on the National Register of Historic Places,” Edmunds said. l

A Bitter Pill

I

’m at the point where each doctor visit starts with “Well, at your age…”. I need to get my liver rotated, my heart valves oiled, my lung filters changed and I need a lot of bodywork done. Nips and tucks won’t do it, I need parts replaced and a complete undercarriage overhaul.

I’ve got 99 problems and the cost of health insurance counts for at least 90.

When I found myself without health insurance at the end of last year, I jumped on Healthcare.gov to explore my “affordable” options. The site states that four out of five people can find a plan for $10 or less a month, after tax subsidies.

What they don’t tell you is that the fifth person has to get a third job, sell organs on the black market or start printing money in the basement to afford a healthcare plan.

As I scrolled through my health insurance options, I got irrationally angry. Plans started at around $500 per month, with deductibles ranging from $7,500 to Lamborghini. Keep in mind, this was for one person, not an entire family with pets and farm animals.

Since I had to register by the middle of December, my email was flooded with reminders from the site. Have I registered?

Why not? Did I forget? Did I become independently wealthy? Did I decide to use the money for something fun instead?

No. On the day before the deadline, I put on my adulting hat and signed up for health insurance. I’m still irrationally angry.

I am seriously considering Alternate Healthcare Plan B, which is file for bankruptcy in the event of a major medical emergency.

Still haven’t ruled that option out.

I also have Healthcare Plan C: try not to get sick or need a blood transfusion or get concussed or go for an ambulance ride or break a bone. No emergency room visits.

Just good old-fashioned stubbornness and denial.

There are also herbal remedies and a variety of healing crystals that don’t actually solve my internal issues (there’s only so much power in a rose quartz) but it’s cheaper than an MRI. Or there’s always my mom’s answer to any illness when I was a kid: a spoonful of paregoric. The opium-based medicine made me feel very sleepy and hazy.

But, for now, I’ll end up paying at least
