MURRAYITE BOB DUNN LAUDED WITH GOVERNOR’S AWARD

O

n a local scale, it might be similar to winning the NBA’s Coach of the Year for service.

Bob Dunn recently received the Governor’s Career Humanitarian Leadership Award. He was feted in November at the annual Utah Philanthropy Day, hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the Utah Nonprofits Association, and UServeUtah.

Utah Philanthropy Day has recognized Utahns every year since 1999, including Jon Huntsman and Spencer Eccles. The Governor’s Career Humanitarian Leadership Award recognizes leaders who inspire others to get involved for the betterment of their community and have had a career of 30 years or more.

Dunn recently retired as executive director of the Murray Boys & Girls Club after 39 years with the organization.

Additionally, Dunn served on the TOSH Community Advisory Committee, Utah State Boys & Girls Club Alliance, Utah Council for Citizens Diplomacy Volunteer of the Year Award, Murray City Disability Advisory Board, Murray Rotary Club, Midvale City Neighborhood Action Coalition, and the Kids Eat Board.

A statement in the Utah Philanthropy Day program noted, “As a respected expert on youth programs, Bob lives and breathes positive youth development into everything he does.

Murray suffragettes helped women earn the right to vote

T

his year marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing women’s right to vote in elections. The right to vote, or suffrage, was strongly supported in Murray decades before the amendment passed, and Murray was home to very active suffragettes.

Women’s suffrage was proposed in Utah as early as the 1860s. Many Eastern newspapers, including The New York Times, suggested that women voters would deal a blow to polygamy and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1870, the Deseret News reported that Ladies Mass Meetings were taking place in numerous communities in Utah Territory to support suffrage, including Murray, then known as South Cottonwood. The Utah Territorial Legislature granted women the right, and Seraph Young was the first American woman to vote under equal suffrage laws that same year.

Latter-day Saint women embraced voting rights, and the idea that voting rights would spell doom for polygamy and the church died. After 17 years, Congress passed the Edmunds-Tucker Act, which not only outlawed polygamy, making it a federal crime, but also repealed women’s suffrage.

Leading the charge against the repeal of women’s suffrage was Murray-born Emily Sophia Tanner Richards, whose family established the Tanner homestead on the eastern side of the South Cottonwood settlement (near present Woodstock Elementary).

Richards moved to Washington, D.C., with her husband, Franklin, who was lobbying for Utah’s statehood. Emily, who was no less passionate about her cause, joined suffrage leader Emmeline Wells in meeting with President Grover Cleveland to reduce anti-Mormon sentiment.

ny, Anna Howard Shaw, and Carrie Chapman Catt, and she was invited to create the Utah chapter of the National Women’s Suffrage Association. Richards’s eloquence earned her invitations to speak on behalf of the national organization at the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition and the World’s Congress of Representative Women in 1893.

As Utah inched closer to statehood, one question was whether to once again grant women the right to vote or risk denial of statehood by Congress and the president. In 1895, the Salt Lake Tribune reported that in Murray, a routine irrigation board meeting turned into a suffrage meeting when an unnamed woman interrupted the meeting and called for a resolution to support women’s voting rights. The 300 to 400 people present were reported to have unanimously endorsed the measure.

Also, the Tribune reported that the South Cottonwood LDS Ward interrupted its services to discuss the matter: “…the ‘unanimous’ women suffrage meeting referred to… yesterday, was the regular Sunday meeting held in the South Cottonwood Ward House on Sunday. And after a labored argument by Bishop Rawlins, exhorting the Saints to stand firm for woman suffrage in the Constitution, a ‘show of hands’ was called for in favor. Of course, a large number of hands went up, but the vote was not nearly unanimous, nor was a negative show called for.”

Murray’s support for women’s suffrage was noted to the Constitutional Committee and was included in the proposed statehood constitution. Utah was granted statehood in 1896, with women’s voting rights included.

women and stayed at Richards’s home. Of the event, Richards said, “Women have a chance in the Utah Constitution to show their capacity for government and help mold the institutions of society. The work is but begun; the cause is in its merest infancy. That which remains to be done opens up before us in an almost endless vista. In a faraway promised land, we behold a perfected state wherein the heart and hand and intelligence of women contribute their full share.”

Richards would continue to advocate for national suffrage, being called to speak in places as far away as Toronto and Berlin and would celebrate the ratification of the 19th Amendment in August of 1920. She would go on to form the Utah League of Women Voters as well as vote in all the nine elections, until her death in 1929. l

Continued from front page Dunn said, “I look at the people I have known—I have people (at the Boys & Girls Club) who have adopted poor kids who did not have a home; that took in a girl that was abused by her father and adopted her; that saw kids who were hungry and needed food over the weekend and started an organization; that went through some personal challenges and stayed strong and continued to support us; people that have had unimaginable lives, that have grown and made something of themselves.”

Before receiving the award, presented in the Salt Palace’s grand ballroom, a short movie featuring highlights of Bob’s 40 years of work at the Boys & Girls Clubs was shown. Those who had worked closely with him over the years got to express their admiration and love for him and for all the children’s lives he touched and positively influenced.

Dunn has been part of the Boys & Girls Club since he was hired on in 1978, at the age of 24, after attending the University of Utah. The starting budget for the program was a meager $19,000. In the beginning, the Boys & Girls Club’s activities were held in a small building. Dunn said they hosted 100+ kids daily.

Under his leadership, the Murray Club grew to Boys & Girls Clubs of South Valley and later merged with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake in 2015 to expand services to eight locations and more than 7,500 kids

annually in three counties.

Though retired, Dunn continues to serve as a Special Projects Consultant for the Boys & Girls Clubs and works with its executive leadership team and board of directors, supporting donor and public relations on behalf of the kids in Salt Lake, Tooele, and Carbon counties.

Last year, with support from the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation, the 40-year-old Boys & Girls Club building was renovated and rechristened the Miller Family Club. An anonymous donor contributed to creating a gaming room named the Dunn Fun Zone, after the former director.

In their award presentation, Utah Philanthropy Day noted, “Dunn has a never-ending passion for the thousands of Boys & Girls Club members and staff he has mentored during his 40 years in youth services.

Throughout these years, Bob has helped shape many educational and prevention programs that have directly improved the lives of Utah’s youth. Today, many credit the Club, and Bob personally, for literally saving their lives.” l

You were just in a car acident, now what?

Unless you’re one of the few anomalies in the world, we’ve all been in an accident. We’ve experienced that sickening feeling when your car makes unwanted contact with another vehicle.

We’re frustrated and disheartened.

While we may want to crawl into a hole, we can’t. There are things to do and we’ve given you 10 to be aware of (in no particular order).

1.Have an emergency kit in your car.

While this step comes before the accident occurs, it’s essential to be prepared.

Whatever you kit entails, make sure it has a first-aid kit, flashlight, reflective triangles and a small (and simple) camera in case there’s been damage to your phone. We’re typically frustrated or frazzled after an accident and not inclined to rational thinking. Being prepared limits the possibility of forgetfulness.

2.Take a deep breath. Accidents are traumatic experiences. Taking a breath will shift focus from what just happened to what needs to be done next.

3.Get a status check on everyone in the car. Check with each passenger to see if they are OK. Have someone call

911 immediately if someone is injured or unresponsive.

4.Move to a safe location. Most insurance companies recommend relocating the vehicle to the sidewalk or shoulder of the road as soon as possible after the accident. If the damage to the car is minor, this should be relatively easy. But if there are major injuries or questions about the safety of the car, leave it where it is, even if its blocking traffic.

5.Increase your visibility. Turn on your hazard lights and set out your attention items from the emergency kit—flares, orange cones, reflective triangles, etc.

One accident should not lead to another. Take precaution to ensure other drivers on the road remain safe.

6.Stay calm. It is very easy to lose your temper in this situation, it’s human nature. Keeping your cool will keep the situation from getting worse. If it wasn’t your fault, it’s easy to want to let your emotions loose on the other driver. This will cloud your judgment and may lead to something that does not help the situation. You still need to exchange information. l

For Murray teenager, service is in the bag

ids at Murray’s Miller Family Boys & Girls Club are involved in a myriad of great activities, everything from arts and crafts to study skills to making great friendships.

Carissa Vera, 16, took her membership in the club to a whole new level by organizing a project to provide over 600 meals to the homeless over the Christmas holidays.

Vera first came to the Miller Family Boys & Girls Club when she was in seventh grade.

Her mom decided that she needed a place to go after school that was safe, fun, and inviting. She has embraced the club ideals and now serves as president of its leadership group, Keystone.

“This year, our group has raised over a thousand dollars for our club, been able to serve others for a total of more than 200 service hours, and have even held a community-wide anti-bully rally,” Vera said. “I have also been honored with the title of The Miller Family Boys & Girls Club’s 2020 Youth of the Year.”

The Murray High student remains as committed to school as to the club. She is part of Murray District’s Dual Immersion Program and is the sophomore class vice president. Her involvement in these positions has exposed her to witnessing other people in need.

“One experience that really stood out to me occurred December of 2018. Some other youth at the Boys & Girls Club, as well as myself, were able to make 10 loaves worth of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for some homeless folk at the Family Road Home shelter in Midvale,” Vera said. “It was crazy to me that the only thing that those people needed

around the holidays was some food to eat. The following winter, I wanted to do more than make 10 loaves worth of sandwiches; I wanted to feed hundreds of people. So, I set a goal to give 300 homeless people a meal and a Christmas card. I didn’t know how I was going to do it, but it was going to get done.”

After talking it over with Teen Director at the Miller Family Club, Jillian Orr, they made a list of all the supplies they would need.

Vera then reached out to businesses and contacted Edwin Matamoros, a manager at Jordan Landing’s Nike Outlet. He quickly emailed back and said that the company would love to donate supplies as well as send a few of their employees to help make it happen. She codenamed the operation “The Paper Bag Project.”

According to Vera, “The project went better than planned. We had 50 volunteers show up on the day of our project and had an additional 30 people create some of the Christmas cards in advance. Over the course of two hours, we were able to make over 600 paper bag lunches (double the amount that we initially planned for) and an additional 150 sandwiches.

“Then, it was time to hit the streets. Four Boys & Girls Clubs… came together to pass out these paper bag lunches downtown. We passed out 100 bags to different individuals before donating the rest to Midvale’s family homeless shelter/Road Home.”

Vera already has been awarded a scholarship from the Boys & Girls Club. She remains passionate about service, and later this year, she will be doing a cultural exchange with kids from Mali, Africa. She also hopes to make the

Paper Bag Project an annual event and apply what she has learned from it.

“After the project, I felt better than I ever had. It was so humbling to see the relief and

joy that came from what we would deem as a basic lunch. We fed over 600 people that day.

t the Jan. 7 Oath of Office ceremony, Murray City Council welcomed two new members who also represent many new firsts for Murray. The 2019 election brought in a wave of elected women throughout Utah, which seismically shifted the gender balance of not only Murray but Bountiful, South Salt Lake, Millcreek, and Sandy city councils.

“People move to Murray for our exceptional services, and they stay in Murray because of our exceptional community,” newly elected City Councilor Kat Martinez said after she took the oath of office. “A hundred years ago, women earned the right to vote across the United States, and now for the first time, I am so honored to be part of Murray’s first female majority on the city council.”

Martinez, a mother of three young children, will retain her position as a trainer for the State of Utah Health Department. She has given up her seat on the boards of Murray City Arts Advisory Board and the Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault. Martinez will be in the minority of the council of holding a full-time job, as Dale Cox, Diane Turner, and Brett Hales are all retirees.

The first Latino member of the city council, Rosalba Dominguez, said in her inaugural remarks, “I have always said that my parents and family were some of the first brown people in the state of Utah. In the ’80s, everyone knew everyone in the Mexican community; it was that small.” Local Latin-American folk guitarist Anastasio Castillo performed a musical number in Spanish during the oath of office ceremonies.

No less significant was the re-election of Brett Hales to the council for a third term.

Hales becomes the longest-serving member of the council but is one of the longest-serving officials in the state who has multiple sclerosis (MS). Hales has made headlines for his support of medicinal marijuana and has openly discussed how the use of that drug has helped him control the effects of the neuromuscular disease.

“My wife, Cindy, is amazing. We have been married 37 years,” Hales said after he took his oath. “I was diagnosed with MS in 2005 and spent some time in a wheelchair and on a feeding tube. We didn’t know if this was even possible, and Cindy said that we can do this, and she was my legs for a lot of a part of it. She ran all of the flyers… I want to show my appreciation to Cindy because she has been by my side the entire time, and I am so grateful to her.”

Hales conducted the city council meeting later that same evening. Knowing that there were new city council members, Hales took the opportunity during the meeting to explain in more detail the topics on the city council agenda. While the meeting ran longer than the typical city council meeting, Hales allowed city administrators to clarify in-depth items such as zoning designations.

As is customary with the start of a new calendar year, the council voted on leadership assignments, with Dale Cox being voted as council chair and Dominguez as vice-chair.

Diane Turner was elected as budget chair with Martinez as vice-chair.

The council also voted and unanimously approved the mayor’s appointments to boards of interlocal entities. Appointed to represent Murray, were Mayor Blair Camp to Central Valley Water Reclamation Facility, Utah Telecommunication Open Infrastructure Agency, and Jordan River Commission; Murray Power Director Blaine Haacke to the Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems and Intermountain Power Agency Board; Finance Director Brenda Moore to the Utah Infrastructure Board; Chief Administrative Officer Doug Hill to Metro Fire Agency Board; City Recorder Jennifer Kennedy to the Community Action Board; Development Services Manager Jim McNulty to NeighborWorks Salt Lake Board, and City Councilor Diane Turner to the Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District Board. l

Return of the fish

he fish has returned, at least a homage to it. Long time Murrayites will recall the iconic fish sign, if not the odor, of Nelson & Sons Silver Cup Fish Feed on 4800 South.

The fish food store took over the historic

grain elevator building that was originally Bennion’s Flour & Feed Mill. The fish food sign stood vigil in Murray for decades until the company moved. The mill was later destroyed by fire.

McMillan name intertwined with education, lends itself to Murray school

n Granite School District, there are 15 elementary and three junior high schools named after notable men — and soon, it will have an elementary named after Olene Walker, Utah’s first and only female governor.

However, other districts have shied away from naming schools after people, instead naming them about features in the area such as Jordan School District’s Golden Fields Elementary and Mountain Creek Middle in South Jordan.

Murray School District has McMillan Elementary, which was built in 1954 as Hillcrest Elementary and then changed its name in 1960 when district administrators wanted to name the secondary school Hillcrest.

“Nobody quite knows what the reason was to name the school McMillan,” said Mitch McMillan, who has worked as a custodian for 19 years at the school named after his family. “Everyone has an idea, but I haven’t seen the reason written anywhere.”

Some say the school was named McMillan since it sits on the land at 5770 South where Mitch McMillan’s great-great-grandpa Michael McMillan, Sr. and wife, Mary Brown McMillan, joined Michael Sr.’s brothers, William and Neil, who came two years earlier, to farm.

Michael and Mary McMillan immigrated from Scotland to the United States during a nine-week voyage in 1863. They took a train from New York to St. Joseph, Missouri and then a boat to Omaha, before coming across the prairies in an oxen wagon train to Murray, then called South Cottonwood, according to a report written by Mitch’s cousin, Lavar C. McMillan, who served as mayor of Murray from 1986 to 1990 and received Murray High’s outstanding alumni award in 1996.

The three brothers and their families lived on the farm, which in the 1870s was commonly known as McMillan Lane, that prospered for 90 years, depending on the water from Little Cottonwood Creek, according to Michael Sr.’s son, Verl, who shared the story with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers on Oct. 13, 1966.

At first, Michael Sr. and Mary lived with William in a two-room adobe home until they could build a dugout in a creek bank.

Later, they built a one-room adobe home and years later, added a second room, where they lived for 11 years before building a two-story home, according to “The History of Murray City, Utah.”

Eventually, the farmland was sold parcel by parcel, with the last remaining 15 acres of farmland owned by descendent Newel McMillan. There, an 18-classroom school with a multi-purpose room, kitchen and library was built, according to the “Centennial History of the Murray School District.”

“The school sits on cement pillars since the north end of it slants. I’m able to walk under it standing up. Maybe it saved money not to take out the hill with the construction,” Mitch McMillan said. “Whether it was eminent domain (the right of a government to seize private property for public use, with payment of compensation) or the farm was lost to growth in the area, it depends who you talk to.”

From that point, education and service has intertwined with the McMillan family.

According to family history, written by the sons of Michael “Elmo,” Michael Sr.’s son’s “early life was spent on the farm and from the time he was big enough, he led the horse so they could put the hay by a derrick in the barn. They raised sugar beets, potatoes, hay to feed the animals in the winter.”

Mitch McMillan said his grandfather, Michael Elmo, taught English, German and math at the high school in 1917.

“In 1918, he asked to be released from his contact for the war and served in the Air Force. He came back in 1919 and continued to be an educator for 43 years,” he said.

Elmo McMillan was the principal of Liberty Elementary from 1923-27, and at the now defunct Arlington School, 1927-59, before opening Longview Elementary in 1960.

That has other people wondering if the school name is a nod to him. Others say it’s for Michael McMillan, Jr., who served as the first school board president from 1906-08.

While McMillan Elementary has served thousands of students, Mitch McMillan said that his direct family line hasn’t attended the school nor been principal at the school.

“My dad didn’t go there, I went to Viewmont, my kids went to Longview,” he said.

“It didn’t occur to me to even go here.”

Through the years, McMillan has celebrated changes, with additions of the library and media center and two classrooms and a storage room. It celebrated its 60th birthday six years ago.

“I don’t think anyone will ever know why it’s really named McMillan, but since my great-, great-uncles moved here, our family has grown up and has gotten their education here and has worked and served Murray,” Mitch McMillan said, adding that there isn’t a line in the selling contract that says a McMillan is given priority to work at the school. “It’s an honor to carry on the family name and work here.” l

urray City Council will consider funding requests for the upcoming budget year, with some of the most significant capital requests being to fully fund the Murray Theater renovation and the replacement of Murray Park’s pavilions. The age of some park pavilions is over 50 years old, and their dilapidated condition prompted the city to tear them down last fall.

According to Finance and Administration Director Brenda Moore, “During the budget process for FY2020, the Parks and Recreation Department requested $3 million to remodel the Murray Theater. At the end of the budget process, $1 million was approved and is currently being spent to get the project started. Efforts are underway to secure donations for the project, and the county has awarded $3.5 million toward the renovation in response to our Tourism, Recreation, Culture & Convention (TRCC) fund application.”

The Murray Journal reported in May 2018 that plans had been drawn up for renovating the 82-year-old theater. The city purchased the theater in 2015 after Salt Lake County decided to construct its mid-valley performing arts theater in Taylorsville rather than Murray’s proposed location at 4800 South and State Street. The city hopes to begin construction this year.

All five of Murray Park’s pavilions have been demolished. The city has already approved for the Murray City Parks and Recreation Department to proceed and receive bids on the project. Reconstruction of the pavilions is expected to begin in spring, except for the pavilion next to the Parks Department office building. That pavilion requires utility reconfiguration and possible expansion to include a playground and restroom.

“The Parks and Recreation Department also requested $1 million to replace three of the pavilions in Murray Park. Upon learning of the poor condition of the pavilions, the city council increased the budget to $2 million so that all five pavilions could be replaced,”

Moore said.

Far and away, the largest budget item is salaries, including those of elected officials.

Murray City Councilors receive an annual salary of $15,947, for a total budget of five city councilors at $77,485. Mayor Blair Camp’s salary is $118,518, plus an additional salary of $17,826.

“The mayor is a full-time employee and is eligible to participate in the URS retirement plan and the city’s health insurance,” Moore said. “Mayor Camp is a retired fire chief, and Murray City is not allowed to make retirement contributions for him. His salary has been adjusted by $17,826, which would normally have been paid into the retirement system.”

The city councilors are also eligible for health insurance and a retirement plan. Both mayor and city council receive cost-of-living adjustments; last budget year, it was a 2.7% increase, which all employees received for fiscal year 2020. Elected officials also receive stipends in addition to their salary. Each city councilor and the mayor receive a $780 cell phone allowance, or $65 per month.

Each city councilor also receives a stipend of $4,200 that is known as a “Council Allowance.” Last fiscal year, the city council approved a 40% increase to their allowance, per month per council member. The allowance has no specified restrictions on its use.

The mayor receives a specific stipend for a car allowance of $4,200, or $350 per month. The stipend is not part of the mayor’s $5,000 “travel and learning” budget, which includes travel for the mayor and his three staff members. The city council has a “travel and learning budget” of $33,000, or $6,600 per member.

Students learn curiosity, problem-solving keys to engineering careers

orner Canyon senior Jenna Mills spent the better part of a day listening to engineers, asking them questions, seeking information to better understand career paths ahead of her.

“This is really cool,” she said. “I want to solve problems that help people, and that’s why I’m learning what these people are doing.”

At the engineering career day, which attracted 444 high school students across the Salt Lake and Tooele valleys, scientists from Reaveley Engineers to WesTech Engineering to CCI Mechanical to Stryker to Ivanti to Rocky Mountain Power, shared with students about what they do, why they do it and requirements needed for their careers as well as answered participants’ questions.

In one rotation, Mills had attended Wadsworth Construction where she learned about bridge infrastructure, even learning about the underwater construction of a nearby Snake River bridge. In another, she was learning about Stadler Rail, which constructs both electric and diesel trains in Europe as well as in the states.

According to Stadler Vehicle Engineer Amber Lyerly, the company could be expanding from 300 employees to 1,000 employees – from production to engineers – in the next five to 10 years.

“We have a pathway from high school which will help you get a degree and get hands-on experience,” Lyerly told students.

“Basically, engineering jobs are similar. We learn how things work, we engineer or design more, we fix things. One of the most rewarding things for me is to see a project through from start to finish and see it working.”

Mills doesn’t have her mind set on transportation engineering, but rather environmental as she would like to help with water filtration for agriculture in third world countries.

“It’s the same concept: identify the problem, come up with possible methods or designs to find a solution that helps people,” she said.

In another session, Ottobock’s Emilie Simpson demonstrated prosthetics made with a 3D printer.

“I graduated in mechanical engineering and have had the passion to learn how things work,” she said. “It’s pretty cool and exciting. I like to help people, but I like to be in the background. It’s rewarding knowing we’re on the edge of the future of medical devices.”

Olympus High sophomore Wyatt Comer sat in on their talk as one of his sessions.

“I came to look at careers and get information to learn about my options,” he said.

“It’s been kind of cool to learn how they make the prosthetics and how engineering is incorporated into so many parts of our lives.”

That was the goal of the day, said Canyons School District Career and Technical Education Coordinator Patti Larkin.

“We want them to learn about these people’s paths, so our students can see what is needed, so they have the opportunity to start sooner, gain an internship, have a job shadow, explore their options as they learn the different types of engineering,” she said.

In the sessions, speakers shared how engineers have developed and changed everyday living.

At Hunt Electric, Engineering Division Manager Darrin Sanders told students how architectural plans that used to be drawn by hand, now are created as a 3D model and “everything is built from that model.”

Austin Loveless, of Boeing, discussed with students why aluminum has been replaced with carbon-fiber composites for their fleet, as it has “almost infinite fatigue life,” less weight, less carbon in the air and larger windows. He said it was through engineering that the composite was made and determined to be best.

VPI Technology’s Gary Olsen said that in their work, there are numerous engineers — research and development, electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, software, application, test, quality control, and others.

For example, he said engineers are needed each step of the way to design a cell phone from designing its look and shape so it’s easy to hold to ensuring dust stays out or how to access batteries. They also make sure it’s functionable and test it to see if it consistently performs.

“Math, especially calculus, our engineers use on a daily basis, but they also use their curiosity,” he said. “You can start learning now. Pop the hood and learn how the car works. If you start now to learn how things around you work, then you’re understanding the culture of engineering.” l

Mayor’s Message DARE: An Investment in the Future As Mayor, one of the enjoyable duties I get to perform is attending and speaking at the DARE graduations in our elementary schools. DARE stands for “Drug Abuse Resistance Education” and includes a 10-week program taught to all fifth-grade students in Murray each year by the Murray Police Department. I am always impressed by the bond that the students build with Officer Rebecka Cox, our current DARE program manager, during the short time that she spends with them. During the past year Officer Cox taught 25 classes in nine schools, reaching 560 students. Each of these students wrote an essay at the end of the course explaining what they learned and what impressed them about the course. Selected essays are read at the DARE graduation programs by the students.

The DARE curriculum is much more than drug abuse resistance training. In addition to drug, alcohol, and tobacco education, Officer Cox instructs the students regarding self-awareness and management, responsible decision making, relationship and communication skills, as well as handling responsibilities and challenges. These lessons offer a variety of interactive, role playing and cooperative learning activities which are designed to encourage students to solve problems of major importance in their lives.

In November 2017, the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis released a 125-page report containing recommendations to combat the addiction crisis in America. The report states in part that “substance abuse prevention is a process which requires a shift in behavior, culture, and community norms…When evidence-based programs are selected for specific populations and implemented with fidelity, they can be effective… School programs implementing environmental approaches targeting children focus on build-

As a proud supporter of DARE, I believe that this curriculum is one that meets the objectives of the President’s Commission in battling the epidemic. While there have been critics over the years that have made the argument that the success of DARE is not measurable, I believe that any and all efforts that we can make in educating children can be nothing but positive. I like to tell the students at the DARE graduation that we are counting on them to make good decisions, as they are the future leaders of our communities. I consider DARE to be an investment in the future.

I appreciate the school administrators and teachers in the Murray and Granite School Districts for allowing us the time in their busy school schedules to present DARE. I believe they also recognize the value of this program. I also want to give a “shout-out” to Miss Murray (currently Sarah Nelson) for attending and speaking at the graduations as her schedule allows. The students are always mesmerized by her, and she delivers an important message to the students as well.

At the conclusion of each graduation, I have the honor of administering the “DARE Oath” to the students to “make it official.” Each student raises their right arm to the square and promises to live by the principles they learned. After each graduation program as I watch the students swarm to Officer Cox to thank her, some with a big hug and even some tears, I can’t help but wonder what the long term impact will be from the work that has gone into the program. If we provided some tools to help make a positive change in the lives of even a few of our students, wasn’t it worth it? I think so.

Message from the Council As a seasoned Murray City Council Member, I am enthusiastic about the year ahead and a rather significant change in the look of the Murray City Council. With the election of two new female council members, a quorum of women has been established. Bringing diverse experiences, skills, capabilities and perspectives to Murray City – we are well positioned to commence the decade ahead.

Let me not diminish those who have served and moved on to other challenges. Dave Nicponski with eight years and Jim Brass with sixteen years of service have been effective representatives for the people of our community and have helped to move our city forward in so many areas.

And, reelected for a third term, Brett Hales, continues his service for District 5 and brings much experience and expertise to the council, along with Dale Cox, in his first term, with extensive knowledge in governmental issues.

You may have noticed a surge in women who were successful at the municipal ballot box this season. We are beginning to see greater numbers of women meet the challenges and obligations of work, family and community service to become political candidates and leaders. Enduring the rigors of a political campaign are difficult, but we have observed proven success with Kat Martinez and Rosalba Dominguez joining the ranks in Murray City. These are qualified, engaged and eager representatives, devoted to the community in which they reside and raise their families.

At the state level, however, women account for just 24% of the Utah State Legislature and are far outnumbered by men at 76%; yet the state population reports 49.8% of Utah’s 2.7 million

people are female. Would government function better if it better reflected the people it represents?

If you are one of those women who has considered running for office, it might be helpful to consult the book written by Kate Black and June Diane Raphael, “Represent: The Woman’s Guide to Running for Office and Changing the World”. This book offers a Diane Turner 21-point checklist covering topics from District 4 fundraising to managing family life. It also helps to have supportive spouses or partners, friends to motivate you, great advisors and allies you can trust.

Murray City residents have always been forward thinkers and I am pleased to see that they have recognized the value qualified women bring to public service.

This promises to be an exciting year as we move forward together as a city council to set policy, make laws and responsibly budget the finances of our city. We pledge to provide Murray residents and businesses the community services, utilities, public safety, great parks and recreational activities they deserve to strategically move forward into the 2020’s and create an environmentally responsible community where children are proud to return to raise their families.

The Murray Police Department held their annual banquet in January to celebrate and honor their officers and staff. Chief Craig Burnett and Command Staff gave many awards to officers throughout the evening for excellence in skills and knowledge, going the extra mile in their duties, and for their unwavering support and protection of the Murray City community.

Chief Burnett awarded two medals this year. The Medal of Distinction is presented for performing an act of courage of saving or protecting human life.

This medal was awarded to Officer T. Wendel for his heroic actions and lifesaving efforts during an incident where a young child had fallen into the swift creek waters at Murray Park. Officer Wendel responded to the call and ultimately saved the child’s life.

The Chief’s Star is awarded for exceptional performance of duty, or for an accomplishment of highly credible and/ or unusual law enforcement action. This award was presented to Officer B. Ririe for his 18 plus years of mentoring and instructing our community’s young prospective hunters through teaching a bi-annual Hunter’s Education class. Officer Ririe has put many hours of dedication and experience into making sure our youth are trained and prepared to be a safe hunter and how to safely use firearms.

The Officer of the Year award was awarded to Officer T. Wendel and the Employee (Civilian) of the Year was awarded to Terry Hoffmann. Both individuals were given these awards based on being selected by their peers.

It was a wonderful event enjoyed by all, and a great opportunity for Chief Burnett to honor our fantastic Murray City Police Department officers and staff.

Neecholl and her husband, Rich, moved to Murray three years ago and instantly fell in love with the community. She spent her early childhood growing up in Utah and exploring all the great canyons and state parks our wonderful state offers. Neecholl’s love of nature led her to photography. She wanted to capture the beautiful sunsets, landscapes, and majestic trees and take them home to enjoy all year round.

Au pairs come from abroad to work and serve the community

ids First joins Kids Eat and Kids Read in the galaxy of Murray-born charities named Kid. Reba Davies, a child care consultant and Murray resident, has created a distinctive charity that provides grants to organizations that help children within the United States.

Uniquely, Kids First also provides opportunities for au pairs (live-in child care providers) to go out into the community and perform acts of service. Davies works for Cultural Care Au Pair, an organization that helps au pairs from around the world connect with families that need child care services.

They also assist potential au pairs through the process of obtaining visas, travel insurance and transportation.

“My role is to find and help families host au pairs and also support the au pairs while they are here in Utah. It is an amazing cultural exchange program that helps make the world smaller through understanding and sharing,” Davies said. “While this is my job to help and support the au pairs and their host families, my company also has a charitable side, Cultural Care Kids First Foundation.

I was selected as a member of our Mentor Council for Kids First to help educate my community and colleagues about this organization and also promote it through fundraising, partnerships and more.”

All funds raised by Kids First are matched by Cultural Care Au Pair, which allows everyone to help children, no mat-

ter how much they give. They fundraise to support projects and partners all around the globe; they provide grants to U.S. organizations to help children locally and then collaborate with local organizations to help children.

According to Davies, “Here in Utah, my au pairs and I put together craft kits for The Road Home Family Shelter. The children then used these kits during winter break last year to have something to do while out of school. While we also collected warm winter clothing for the children, our mission is to provide items above the necessities, to help promote education, culture and recreation for children.”

In December, the Kids First au pairs helped Davis County charitable groups with a “Community Christmas” by wrapping boxes for donations. Then the au pairs set up Christmas trees to promote contributions.

“Last January, I had the opportunity to visit a home for children in state custody near Cabo San Lucas. Casa Hogar is a temporary (hopefully) home for children removed from their parents, but who cannot be adopted (there is no foster system there),” Davies said. “These children are given meals and the basics, but while there, I noticed their small computer lab had many monitors, keyboards, and mice, but only a few actual computers.

When I asked about it, they said that the computers had broken or just no longer worked and they could not afford to replace them.

My husband and I are now working to raise the money to build small computers for them.

My husband will build the computers, and then we will send them to the support organization to deliver. I am hoping to raise funds to send at least five of these, but would love to send the 10 they need.”

Kids First hopes to make connections in Murray and the surrounding areas to let groups know about the grants that can be used for recreation, education or cultural projects. “While I work to find organizations that could use these grants or volunteer hours from myself and my au pairs, I don’t have a

huge reach, and I hope to expand it,” Davies said.

Cultural Care Au Pair is a company whose foundation helps fund Kids First grants to provide childcare and cultural exchange program for international au pairs.

The au pair lives with the family while providing up to 45 hours of childcare each week, while the organization helps them obtain their visa, provides travel and medical insurance, and secures their transportation. More information regarding Kids First can be found at rdavies.aupairnews.com. l

‘Roboblasters’ kicks off high school robotics season

AMES (Academy for Math, Engineering and Science based out of Cottonwood High School) recently hosted 22 robots in a friendly preseason game of “roboblasters,” which was designed around improving skills for the 13 participating schools’ robotic students, said AMES coach Sara Whitbeck-Zacharias. Hillcrest High coach Clief Castleton said he appreciated the opportunity for his students: “Nothing is on the line; it’s just for fun. We use it as a practice, a positive opportunity to help our team and other Utah teams get better.” At the challenge, Cottonwood High won, with Jordan High coming in second and AMES, third. plan portion, Judge Memorial won, with AMES, Hillcrest, West High and Cottonwood placing second to fifth, respectively. The AMES challenge is the 5th annual December competition preparing students for the FIRST robotics challenge. Viewmont students code, get sense of altered reality with Utah STEM in Motion visit

I

n a Viewmont Elementary fourth-grade classroom, two boys were working together, taking strips of colored plastic and placing them in an order on their desks.

To a passerby, it may look like nonsense, but the plastic strips were hands-on coding blocks, a simple introduction to coding.

“I can put these in a certain order, and I learn how to code, and I can make him do things,” Andrew Noel said about his classmate, Tucker Warner.

Tucker said it was all in fun as he took his turn learning to command Andrew to do the same.

The class was divided into small teams where they were introduced to the language, such as flow charts and algorithms, as well as the steps of coding as part of the Utah STEM Action Center in Motion outreach program that travels throughout the state to teach students at more than 70 schools annually.

“These kids are going to need to know coding when they’re older,” STEM Action Center in Motion Program Coordinator Molly Bock said. “There will be more jobs, jobs we don’t even know what will exist, that will need coding. There are a lot of opportunities in Utah for coding. This is just a fun way to get kids excited to code as they learn how to have each other do silly things or jumping jacks and push-ups, they’re still learning the basics.”

Fourth-grade teacher Kristen Snow appreciated the engaging teaching for her students.

“It’s way cool to have the opportunity to do this,” she said. “It’s a different way of learning; it’s hands on. A lot of kids may not be familiar with programs that are available, but this may give them something extra, something that may pique their interest in STEM learning.”

That was the goal of parent Teresa Koontz when she contacted the STEM Action Center to bring fun, hands-on activities to engross students in learning.

“I started coordinating our school science fair three years ago and each year, I try to add something new,” she said. “I thought this would be a good kick-off to get kids engaged

and they can learn about STEM careers.”

The school science and engineering fair, which was held Jan. 14-15, has grown from 20 projects two years ago to more than 100 last year.

Koontz picked a couple topics from the dozen offered to be introduced to students, with the help of Colleen Fisher, STEM in Motion program manager.

Fisher said the goal was to connect with students, bringing enthusiasm and awareness to the STEM field and careers, which supports the governor’s initiative for a STEM-competitive workforce.

“We want to spark an interest in STEM and introduce them to careers they may not have known about, from robotics and engineering to an ophthalmologist, nursing or EMT,” she said. “When we introduce these in elementary school, it’s more likely that it will

spark an interest and they’ll pursue careers in the STEM field, where we have a shortage in the work force.”

Before Fisher introduced “Our Senses and the Brain” to sixth-grade students, she wanted to introduce STEM careers to students.

“When you ask students what they’d like to do for a future career, many of them say professional sports of some sort,” Fisher said.

“But I want them to realize with sports as well as most any career, they’ll be using STEM.” Sure enough, the first professions students told her were Major League Baseball and National Football League players. Students identified the need to know math to figure out stats and scores into those careers. Other careers included those in the medical field, acting, research and counseling, all which Fisher explained there were relationships with the brain.

There were activities for students to learn about the brain and senses such as wearing reverse goggles while trying to draw a flower and trying altered reality goggles when they played catch with a classmate.

Sixth-grader Grace Taeoalii said she thought catching a beanbag with the goggles wouldn’t be much different.

“I thought it would be easier, but everything shifted,” she said.

The same thing happened to her classmate Alex Beckstead.

“I thought I could do it, but everything wasn’t where I thought it would be,” he said.

Macy Spjute said once she missed catching, even picking it up wasn’t as easy as normal.

“It fell on the ground and it was hard to find because it wasn’t right where I thought it was,” she said.

Her classmate, Kaitlyn Stout, realized the fun activity also taught them something more than just altered reality.

“We needed to work together, to help each other to be able to do it,” she said.

Their teacher, Lindsey Armstrong, appreciated the activities.

“It opens their eyes to different way of learning as they think about other senses through engaging activities and taking problem-solving to a new level,” she said. “I love any time students can become excited and engaged in the classroom like this.” l

t Viewmont Elementary in Murray, fourth-grader Addy Boyer and her class took hands-on coding blocks and arranged them in a way to command their peers to speak or do something.

It was a simple introduction to coding, but one that got the message across to these 9- and 10-year-olds.

“Coding is fun because we can make others do interesting things, like push-ups and sit-ups, clapping hands and giving highfives,” Addy said. “And if I don’t do it right, I can look at it again, then try again to create things. It’s fun.”

Her classmate, Bailey Terry agrees.

“Learning how to code is another way to communicate,” she said. “I code a little at home to wish someone happy birthday and can write for them to smoosh cake in their face or I could write a message to my mom that I’m sorry for whatever made her mad and say, ‘If you forgive me, I will do chores and say I’m sorry’ or something like that.”

While these girls had the chance to practice their coding skills in December, Gov. Gary Herbert recognized that same month that not every school in Utah has the same opportunities to have computer science education.

Thus, he included $10.2 million in his budget — yet to be approved by the Utah Legislature — to boost computer science public education statewide, which coincides with the Utah State Board of Education recently approving new computer science standards for sixth through 12th grades and upgrading guidelines for kindergartners through fifth grade.

The goal is to bring students up to date on coding changes of the 21st century and reach every student with computer science education by 2022, said Herbert, who declared it Computer Science Education Week.

Educators applaud new guidelines, funds expected for more computer science education in schools

“Computer sciences is problem-solving and analysis and that applies to every part of education and life,” he said. “In the 21st century, about everything we do will center around technology. We will need to know how and why things work, be able to use data and use information. We need computer science at every school in the state.”

At Bella Vista Elementary in Cottonwood Heights, STEM instructor Honor Steele introduces computer science and coding to about 275 students through hands-on activities.

Students learn how to be empowered learners, digital citizens, discover online resources, use Google Earth, create using film skills, learn engineering skills with FIRST Lego robotics and use coding, Spheros and Hour of Code for computational thinking.

“We end the year with a month dedicated to coding; kids ask and look forward to it,” Steele said. “It’s more than just games; it’s an introduction to get them to problem-solving. They learn the essentials of how coding works. We want every kid to have these opportunities. Some kids will love it, take off and have it be something they will pursue — and while not every student will latch on and run with it, they have gained a greater understanding of where we are with current technology. We’re sowing the seeds in elementary school that needs to be carried on.”

At nearby Ridgecrest Elementary, teacher Linda Leavitt agrees, encouraging students to use Chromebooks for several assignments.

“I try to incorporate technology as much as I can – in math assignments, writing and research,” she said. “I make it more real life and when there’s free time, students are using Chromebooks for learning games in math and reading or practicing their typing.”

“When it comes down to it, it’s critical thinking skills and the tools we use every day are coding. I fully recognize as a fifth-grade teacher that these students will have to be able to think for themselves, problem-solve and understand how things work. So, when you look at it, if we had to choose between cursive or coding, coding has way more applications and usage.”

Leavitt also supports further computer science education, supporting coding electives, as a way to develop students’ understanding.

“Coding is in our phones, our cars, locks on our doors. Next year, our new science curriculum will include more engineering and technology. We need to stay up with technology,” she said.

At Park Lane Elementary in Sandy, a parent asked for more student coding opportunities, thus leading to the introduction in late January of Coding Kids afterschool program.

Technology teacher Mercedes Roberts said that through coding, students will develop the ability to problem-solve in their lives and in jobs, and also give them other skill sets, such as teamwork and creativity.

“I hope they learn coding is fun and not just for nerds,” she said. “It’s important that they’re learning now how to work with others, how teamwork can contribute to ideas and how to express themselves creatively.”

Principal Justin Jeffery said coding also plays into Canyons’ mantra of being college and career ready.

“Coding is our future; many jobs will require these skills and schools need to respond and offer more computer science opportunities,” Jeffery said. “Introducing them now may spark someone’s passion.” l

Lady Utes play up importance of exercise, inclusion

Woodstock Elementary recently hosted the University of Utah Lady Utes basketball team as they teamed up with the grade school students for the Playworks structured recess program, “Real Players Don’t Bully.” Ute freshman and former Corner Canyon basketball standout Kemery Martin was shooting hoops with students.

“The program is a cool way for kids to build team culture and it’s good to have games that encourage everyone to get involved,” Martin said. Her teammate, point guard Kiana Moore, was twirling rope for the elementary students. “It’s fun, playing together, hanging out, supporting inclusion, sharing positive vibes and being involved in the community,” she said. “Bullying is not OK; it’s not acceptable. We don’t just play basketball, but we support education and want everyone to be a player on whatever team, sport, or outside playing.” Other

State Board backs need for recess for elementary school students

B

ack in the day, grade school students would race outside, eager to climb the monkey bars or capture the flag. Others played hopscotch, four-square or kickball.

It was a time when students could play, chat with their friends and have a sense of freedom from fractions or spelling tests. It was always a clear answer as many students’ favorite subject.

Somewhere along the way, it changed for some students. Now, at most Utah schools, recess is considered a privilege that is granted when their schoolwork is done and when they behave.

According to a 2017-2018 Get Healthy Utah school recess report, while 95% of 356 Utah elementary and charter schools (out of 610 in the state) responded that they hold recess, more than 64% said that recess is withheld for discipline and/or remediation.

When broken down further, 72% of Title I schools withheld recess for those reasons compared to 58% of non-Title I schools.

“The findings of the study prompted us to contact the Utah State Board of Education about providing recess guidelines to help provide schools with best practices and make sure that all students in Utah have access to recess,” said Sarah Hodges, Get Healthy Utah executive director.

Hodges teamed up with others, including Canyons School District’s health/PE/ Playworks specialist Allie Teller, to ensure recess be structured to be a positive, safe, inclusive time where students can learn social and leadership skills.

In January, the State Board of Education adopted those guidelines for best practices, including endorsing that recess shouldn’t be taken away as a punishment or used as a remediation time.

While the guidelines are not mandatory, they are an opportunity for schools to determine how best to use recess at their schools, Teller said.

In the group’s presentation, Teller said that research shows students perform better when they have regular breaks that include exercise. She also said it not only helps with development of physical fitness, but also with social and emotional behaviors.

“When students have a break, their academics improve,” Teller said. “They’re able to concentrate better after getting their wiggles out and be able to be on-task in the classroom. Having that brain break is really important.”

In Canyons School District, schools use Playworks, a structured recess program that helps kids stay active and build social and emotional life skills through playing. By training older elementary students to lead games for all grade levels, students are empowered as peer leaders to increase partic-

ipation and decrease problems on the playground.

Teller also holds monthly training for recess aides and physical education specialists so they can learn how to best support students.

“We use recess as an intentional time.

Students have learned skills in PE (physical education) and are practicing them at recess.

Through playing games, they all have learned rules, and now, they are able to work together as a team, communicate, practice their conflict-resolution skills and problem-solving.

These are skills that will support them their whole lives,” Teller said.

At East Midvale Elementary, Principal Matt Nelson agrees with the importance of recess.

“Recess is important; there is all kinds of scientific proof that exercise helps the body and brain balance,” he said. “Playworks at our school has been a great program for students to learn and play together, to be mentors and contribute to safe and fun recesses.

When students have recess, they are able to reset, come back from running around, take a deep breath and refocus.”

Teller said that Canyons District has introduced alternatives to withholding recess time for remediation and social behavior as well as introducing indoor active recesses when inclement weather doesn’t allow outdoor play.

“Our main message is that we want to make recess a positive, safe, happy, healthy inclusive time for every single student,” she said.. l

MHS wrestling team – and a former team member now competing around the world – are each starting 2020 strong

L

ife as Murray High School’s head wrestling coach was a bit easier for Theros Johnson last winter, when he enjoyed the luxury of following and guiding his team – and his wrestling daughter, Elleni – simultaneously. Not yet actually attending MHS, Elleni competed on her dad’s team as a Hillcrest Junior High ninth grader.

At the time, Theros assumed that was simply his first of four seasons Elleni would be with his Spartan group.

Then – in a nutshell – she went out and got “too good.”

As the only girl on that 2018-19 Spartan team, Elleni was not a particular star, competing almost exclusively against boys. But as she began to enter more and more girl-only wrestling tournaments, the then 14 year old developed into a bona fide standout.

Within a few months, Elleni received an athletic and scholastic opportunity she and her parents could not pass up, due to her growing wrestling prowess. And along the way, coach/dad had to adjust to the reality that he would only have Elleni on his Spartan team for that single season. Then she moved 2,075 miles to the east.

So, this is actually two almost completely unrelated stories wrapped into one: a look at this year’s all-male Murray High School wrestling team, along with an update on the “one who got away,” to a prestigious private school in Pennsylvania, with a world-class, all-female wrestling team.

2019-20 MHS Wrestling

The Spartan wrestling team showed steady improvement over each of Johnson’s first three seasons at the helm. But he’s the first to admit, that trend is being tested in this fourth season as the MHS head coach.

“We did very well to start the region 6 (class 5A) dual meet schedule, beating East, Hillcrest, Skyline and Olympus before the

holiday break,” Johnson said. “But we have also had a few key injuries – and we lost some good seniors off last year’s team. So, improving on what they accomplished will be a challenge. We are improving; but we are young this year.”

Foremost on the injury list is one of the Spartans’ three team captains, senior Tyler Sparks. Persistent pain in his shoulders and arms led doctors to discover bulging discs in his neck. At last report, Sparks was doing physical therapy to try to return to the lineup.

In his first season as head coach, no Murray wrestlers placed in the class 5A state tournament. The following year they had one, and last year, two. But Johnson admits, continuing that steady progression up to three state placers this month would require a Herculean effort.

Undoubtedly the team’s best shot at a state placer this year comes with another of the team captains, junior Conway Christensen. He placed third in state last year as a sophomore, and is Murray’s only returning state placer. He’s competing in the same weight class, 138 lbs., for the second straight year.

“I had a 42-6 record last season and am 24-2 (as of press deadline) this year,” Christensen said. “I would really like to wrestle in college next year. I have received two letters from the Stanford wrestling program, along with a couple from Oregon schools. I am trying to finish the season as strong as I can, for my team and for next year.”

Johnson said other MHS wrestlers who could make some noise at the state finals (Feb. 12 and 13 at Utah Valley University) include his third team captain, senior Adam Stringham at 138 lbs. and 113 lb. sophomore Ethan Lund.

“I have a good group of kids this season,” Johnson added. “With more experience,

Entering 2020, Mount Vernon boys basketball enjoyed top 1A record in the state, 9-1

A

young, but much more experienced, Mount Vernon Academy boys basketball team raced out to one of the school’s best season starts ever. With just one senior on its 14-player roster, the Patriots won nine of their first 10 games, before their holiday break.

The Utah high school boys basketball rating percentage index (RPI) also took notice, ranking the tiny private school in Murray third in the state – at the class 1A level – behind only Valley (Orderville) and Wendover high schools. Each of those teams had two losses at the time; but based on their strength of schedule they were rated ahead of the 9-1 Patriots.

Moreover, those RPI ratings now mean everything – and are much more important than region records and standings – when it comes to seeding teams into the state tournament.

Unfortunately, the Patriots saw their win streak snapped, and their RPI take a hit, in their first game of the new decade. Hosting region 22 rival Tabiona, Mount Vernon fell to the defending state champion Tigers, 4641. A split of their next two games had the Patriots with a 10-3 record – and a No. 7 RPI ranking – at press deadline.

Achebo. Joining them in the starting lineup, freshman forward Jaxon Guidash just barely began attending the private school last fall.

With that stellar 10-3 record, the Patriots had nearly doubled last season’s win total, with several games remaining on their schedule.

“We finished 6-13 last season, and missed qualifying for the state tournament for the fourth or fifth year in a row,” Lambson added. “We finished fifth in region 22 and only the top four went to state. I like the new RPI ranking formula, where every team goes to the playoffs. It’s a good experience for kids in small schools like ours.”

Lambson said his team’s primary goals this year are to finish with a winning record and to host a playoff game.

“I feel pretty great that we started the season 9-1,” said starting point guard Martinez. “We had a difficult time winning last year. But we are much more experienced this season and we have had no severe injuries.

It’s going well.”

Orlando is a three-sport athlete who plays football at Brighton High School in the fall, along with basketball and track for Mount Vernon. Last year he was a two-way starter on the gridiron for the Bengals, playing wide receiver and cornerback.

“There’s a school in Florida looking at me for a possible basketball scholarship,” he added. “I want to be a physical therapist one day, and they have a pretty decent program for that. I would rather go to college out of state than to stay here in Utah, just for a new experience.”

A year ago, Martinez had one of the highest per game averages for steals of any Utah high school basketball player, across all of the classifications. Again this season, he said he is averaging eight to nine steals per game.

While Martinez was born and raised here in Utah, another of Lambson’s threesport athletes moved some 7,500 miles from Nigeria to attend the private Murray school.

Sophomore starting center Ketu Achebo lives in Magna and plays football for nearby Cyprus High School. Mount Vernon does not field a football team, allowing Martinez and Achebo to play the sport for two different Salt Lake Valley schools.

A few years ago, Achebo’s older brother Sommy Achebo also attended Mount Vernon and played his high school football for Granger. He was good enough for the Lancers to earn an athletic scholarship to attend Southern Utah University, where he continues to study and play.

Like teammate Martinez, Achebo’s spring sport is track and field.

The Achebo brothers chose to make the long move from Nigeria to Utah, while their three siblings did not.

“I saw (moving here) as an opportunity that I should not let go to waste,” Ketu said.

“I feel it is a way to help my family back home, because it relieves my mom’s stress.

She does not have to worry about me.”

Like Lambson, Ketu believes his individual play – and that of the entire team – has improved this season.

“I feel like this year I am doing better,” he added. “I have scored more points; but I need to work more on my rebounding. That’s what I am concentrating on now.”

It’s been 17 years since Mount Vernon won the Class 1A boys basketball state title.

No one is predicting this year’s squad will match that 2003 performance. But Lambson and his 14 team members are confident they can make a little more noise in the post season than they have for the past several years. l

ottonwood High scored 13 points in one game — in a loss to West High. Those were the only points the 0-10 Colts earned on the football field all season. After losing every varsity, JV and freshman football game this season, Cottonwood High elected not to play in the first round state playoffs.

Administrators also began talks in November to seek playing independently — a move that was granted almost immediately Jan. 15 by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA).

“It isn’t about the cost of the program,” Principal Terri Roylance said. “It’s a safety factor for us. We’ve had as few as 30 athletes on the field, playing both sides of the ball, many of them after playing freshman and JV games, then they go up against 90 players on the opposing team. We knew we needed to step back, build our numbers and play teams closer to our size.”

She said that this past fall, a freshman, who played JV and varsity all season, watched his sister play volleyball, with ice wrapped around his knee.

“There’s no way he could give 100% week after week, but without numbers, he felt he couldn’t take a week off,” Roylance said, adding that there hasn’t been enough players to support all three school teams for the past three seasons.

Roylance said that numbers have dwindled for Cottonwood as participation in the football feeder league has diminished. The school’s changing population also contributes to the change as it pulls students from

several communities, including a large number of refugees, so participation may be limited as students need to ride busses back to their homes, where many take care of younger siblings. Many students also have afterschool jobs to contribute financially to their families, she said.

Since 2015, the team has only won a total of four games. Just seasons earlier, in 2010 and 2011, they were ranked in the top 10 in the state and in 2008, Cottonwood was having the lopsided wins over their opponents as they played in the state finals.

This coming season, there will be no chance to even compete for a state championship. However, Cottonwood administrators say they will re-evaluate playing UHSAA in the fall 2021 after next season.

Roylance added the decision was made to seek independence after talking to the school community council, football coach and department. Since being granted independence, she has “not heard one negative complaint from parents.”

Cottonwood wasn’t the only school that was granted independence. Timpanogos and Payson high schools also will not be playing UHSAA ball and Judge Memorial Catholic High School also sought independence earlier. All of those teams are in Cottonwood’s upcoming season schedule.

“We are putting aside funding for transportation, but it’s important that we do this so we can rebuild our program, with emphasis on safety, enthusiasm and having fun competing,” Roylance said. l

Nation takes notice: Utah girls football show their skills at NFL’s Pro Bowl

he nation’s first all-girls football league is in its sixth year here in Utah and the National Football League has not only taken notice, but they invited an all-star contingent to their Pro Bowl, Sunday, Jan. 26 in Orlando, Florida. The Utah Girls Tackle Football League (UGTFL) took 22 players and six coaches to showcase the state’s talent and trailblazing efforts in an 11 vs. 11 scrimmage during halftime of the NFL’s own allstar matchup.

“It was so amazing!” said Mountain Ridge High junior Sam Gordon, who made a name for herself eight years ago as a viral sensation for her little league football highlights. “Getting to go out in front of the crowd and prove girls can play football was an awesome experience. The crowd was super into it and this is a day I’ll never forget.”

Early on in the second half of the Pro Bowl, NBC’s sports broadcasters Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland commented about the girls halftime scrimmage, particularly noting the “execution on offense and tackling on defense,” saying that it “was a treat to watch.”

Bingham High’s Ambrea Kunkel, who plays right tackle and defensive end, said she had a mixture of nerves and excitement at the opportunity. “I still can’t believe that I got to play at the Pro Bowl. I didn’t realize how

The opportunity came up in mid-January when the NFL called Sam’s father, Brent Gordon, co-founder of the UGTFL in 2014 along with Crystal Sacco. So, Brent, UGTFL president Shawn Goetz and coach Jason Dixon hurriedly selected 22 players from 17 high schools to represent the league and the state. “We were looking for fantastic players who have demonstrated commitment to the league as it was our opportunity to show the world some of our best,” Brent said. “On every single team, any girl from our league can explain what playing football means to them and they express themselves in such a compelling way that they are really our best ambassadors.”

Also on the 22-member all-star team that competed at the Pro Bowl were AAI’s Grace Lamoreaux, Bingham’s Syd Sessions, Copper Hills’ McKell Collotzi, Corner Canyon’s Rylee Taylor, Herriman’s Ellie Bisquera, Hunter’s Anapesi Tofavaha, Jordan’s Kammi Bilanzich, Juan Diego’s Jonna Tucker, Lone Peak’s Aysha Burke, Mountain View’s Cassidy Lindberg, Mountain Ridge’s Kloe Garcia, Murray’s Olivia Green and Naliyah Rueckert, Pleasant Grove’s Erica Afualo, Riverton’s Ella Morgan and Megan Perri, Summit Academy’s Lauren Dixon, West Jordan’s Laura Goetz and Westlake’s Hope Brennan and Tila Malungahu.

In its first year, the UGTFL had 50 fifthand sixth-grade players sign up and the program has continually risen in interest and

players with 460 girls competing last season in grades four through 12.

“We’re trying really hard to expand opportunities for girls and pushing to allow girls to play traditional sports,” Brent said. He has filed a lawsuit against the Utah High School Activities Association to require Utah high schools to offer girls-only football teams.

“These girls are good and the response to our league has been fantastic with a complete upward trajectory.”

Sam Gordon, recipient of the NFL’s inaugural Game Changer award who also appeared in a 2019 Super Bowl commercial, said she is grateful to the NFL for their support of girls football. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve been able to look back and see the greater effect that this has had and it’s incredible that the NFL uses their giant platform to be so supportive of us,” she said.

Kunkel said she has been taught so many life skills through playing football, including teamwork and dedication. “It’s important for us to show that girls can play football and we appreciate those that support our desire to play,” she said.

Registration is open for the volunteer-run Utah Girls Tackle Football League, for those in grades four through 12, which will begin with practices in March. Teams are formed based largely on location in Salt Lake and Utah counties and will play six Saturday games before two weeks of playoffs are held. A flag football division for grades first through eighth will also be available.

ow student science projects apply to real life will highlight the seventh annual Utah STEM and Charter School Expo on Feb. 29. The event is free and held at the Mountain America Center, formerly known as South Towne Expo. Activities run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Students from Utah middle schools, high schools, and colleges/universities will be participating in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects at the event.

“We ask the students how their project can be used in the real world to benefit society,” Kerrie Upenieks, Beehive Science & Technology Academy STEM coordinator/department chair, said. “Besides their project, students need to have a YouTube channel and post it on their website.”

Beehive Science & Technology Academy is a charter school and serves students in grades sixth through 12th. They have expanded in 2020 to include kindergarten through grade five.

Utah students can apply to have an exhibit at the expo by emailing principal@beehiveacademy.org. Beehive Principal Hanifi Oguz said last year’s event included displays from approximately 350 students from 20 Utah schools. Oguz estimated 4,500 people attended last year’s expo.

“The expo provides a venue for students from across the state to showcase their STEM projects,” Upenieks said. “It allows companies and institutions with the opportunity to show how STEM is used to improve our communities.”

Students also learn public speaking skills when they explain the science behind their projects to expo participants. They learn to engage their friends and teach them about science. The goal of the expo is to connect schools to the community, students to profes-

sionals, generate interest, and excitement for STEM programs in general, Upenieks said.

During the expo, people can take part in hands-on experiments. There will be LEGO robotics, presentations, science shows, science trivia, and chances to win donated prizes. Demonstrations include a fire tornado demonstration, a robotics competition and a demonstration on static electricity among others.

More girls have become involved with the STEM program in recent years, according to Upenieks. Some of their seventh-grade girls went to the national Broadcom MASTERS competition, where only the top 30 students in the seventh and eighth grades in America compete. Their school also had 11th-grade girls attend the International Science and Engineering Fair, where ninth to 12th graders from around the world compete.

Valentine’s Day: The Day of the Dead

If you aren’t feeling it, the barrage of commercials will make sure you don’t forget it. I say extra lift, because if you’re lucky enough to have a sweetheart, we should strive to lift them every day, but no sweetheart minds a little extra chocolate sauce on their ice cream once in a while.

It’s not uncommon to hear naysayers find reasons to put down this national day of love, it’s too commercial, too lonely, too fussy, too childish.

To be honest, having suffered the loss of my husband I was inclined to agree.

There’s so much pressure put on us to celebrate Valentine’s Day with roses and a partner by our bedside it can make the rest of us feel… well… a little pathetic.

I’m here to tell you to lighten up on yourself. It’s time to stop thinking there is something wrong with being single on Valentine’s Day! Who cares!

Instead of focusing on the fact that you aren’t in a relationship this February, focus on loving yourself by giving love to those around you instead. Here are 3 ideas to get you out of the love day funk.

1 - Give love to friends and family. It could be as simple as sending out a card or two to your closest friends or someone you know that is in a similar situation, to going all out and inviting people over for a dinner party and movie night.

2 – Give love to a stranger. This could be as simple as making a monetary donation to a charity, organize a collection of needed items for shelter or go great guns and spend a day volunteering. Do this in honor of your loved one if you’re missing one.

3 – Give love to an animal. Keep it simple and spoil your pet. Take your dog to his favorite dog park or spend an afternoon reading snuggled up with your cat. Maybe make a donation to a foundation that provides therapy animals for people, like Utah Pet Partners or run a food drive for the Humane Society.

Just like Mother’s and Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day is a day meant to spend appreciating someone. It’s a day intended to lift someone special.

Scent of Mystery I blame Love’s Baby Soft for destroying my archeological career. Up until I started spritzing the perfume popular with the seventh-grade girls in my class, I’d never given any thought to how I smelled. My mom was lucky to get me to shower, yet, here I was, dousing myself in baby powder-scented toilet water.

The perfume’s slogan should have been a warning, “Because innocence is sexier than you think.”

Seriously? Who came up with that?

Hustler magazine?

My mom saw the signs and tried desperately to distract me. Basketball practice.

Dance lessons. Piano lessons. But it was too late. I’d discovered this scent could lure 12-year-old boys to my locker better than a steak sandwich (which I also tried).

But this wasn’t me! I didn’t care about boys! I had planned a life of adventure!

In first grade, I decided to become an author. I read “The Little Princess” until I absorbed the ability to write through osmosis.

I spent the day in my room, penning stories and jotting down poems then submitted my siblings to “a reading” where I’d share my work and they’d complain to mom.

Becoming Nancy Drew was my second-grade goal. I was ready to uncover ridiculous clues to break up the den of bank robbers living somewhere in Murray, Utah.

As a third-grader, I checked out library books so I could learn hieroglyphics. When the call came to go dig up tombs in Egypt, I’d be ready. I would trek near the pyramids,

wearing khakis and a cute pith helmet, encountering mummies and warding off ancient curses.

Fourth and fifth grade were spent honing my dance skills. Ballet, tap, jazz, hokey-pokey – I did it all. I’d practice every day, secure in the knowledge I’d perform on Broadway.

Or at least the Murray Theater.

In sixth grade, I discovered Paul Zindel’s “The Pigman” and my desire to write returned full-force. It was decided. In the future, I would be a writing, dancing, detective archeologist who spent equal time on the stage and the Amazon rainforest.

But seventh grade! Boys! Gah!!

Suddenly, I wanted to smell good. I became obsessed with every pimple, every pore and studied the beautiful girls who made glamour seem effortless.

I read teen magazines. I learned I needed glossy lips and thick eyelashes to attract the opposite sex. (I tried to no avail to create the perfect cat’s eye, which turned out fine because I’m not a cat.) I had bangs so high and hairspray stiff, they were a danger to low-flying birds.

I fell in love with Shaun Cassidy, which was crazy because, as a writer, how could I marry someone who sang “Da Doo Ron Ron”? Those aren’t even words!

I earned money for Levi’s 501 button-fly jeans and Converse shoes. I bought Great Lash mascara, with its pink-and-green packaging - and Love’s Baby Soft.

Sure enough, the glossy, smelly trap I’d set began attracting boys who were just

as confused as I was. Just last summer we played baseball in the street and now we circled each other like strangers, unsure of what the hell was going on. Hormones raged.

Thanks to the distraction of the opposite sex, I never deciphered hieroglyphics. I never performed under the bright lights of a New York stage. I was never asked to solve the Mystery of the Secret Bracelet.

I blame Love’s Baby Soft. If it hadn’t been for that innocent aroma, I’d be a world-renowned expert on ancient Babylonia, accepting Tony awards for my depiction of Eliza Doolittle.

MURRAYITE BOB DUNN LAUDED WITH GOVERNOR’S AWARD

n a local scale, it might be similar to winning the NBA’s Coach of the Year for service.

Bob Dunn recently received the Governor’s Career Humanitarian Leadership Award. He was feted in November at the annual Utah Philanthropy Day, hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the Utah Nonprofits Association, and UServeUtah.

Utah Philanthropy Day has recognized Utahns every year since 1999, including Jon Huntsman and Spencer Eccles. The Governor’s Career Humanitarian Leadership Award recognizes leaders who inspire others to get involved for the betterment of their community and have had a career of 30 years or more.

Dunn recently retired as executive director of the Murray Boys & Girls Club after 39 years with the organization.

Additionally, Dunn served on the TOSH Community Advisory Committee, Utah State Boys & Girls Club Alliance, Utah Council for Citizens Diplomacy Volunteer of the Year Award, Murray City Disability Advisory Board, Murray Rotary Club, Midvale City Neighborhood Action Coalition, and the Kids Eat Board.

A statement in the Utah Philanthropy Day program noted, “As a respected expert on youth programs, Bob lives and breathes positive youth development into everything he does.
