Meet the City Journals Team

T

he team at City Journals is excited to keep residents in Salt Lake County informed about the great things that are happening in local communities with each of our 12 publications. Our hyperlocal focus is designed to highlight news, city government, education, sports and businesses where it matters most – close to home. We encourage residents to reach out to us and let us know the great things they see happening in their neighborhoods. At the start of this new year, we extend our greetings and well-wishes to all of our readers.

Bryan Scott is the creative director of the City Journals. He is the decision maker that oversees all departments, including editorial, design, distribution, operations and sales. Bryan has made Salt Lake City home for the last two years.

Rachel Hall joined the team in 2015 as the assistant editor. She has experience as an ESL teacher, GED instructor and librarian, as well as a local news reporter in Houston.

She is a native Texan, but has enjoyed her time in Utah since relocating here in 2014.

Brad Casper is the director of operations who also oversees distribution of all of the Journals. He was born and raised in Utah and graduated from BYU-I with a degree in business management and finance. He is married to Lauren and together they have

Ryan Casper is the director of advertising. He has a sales and marketing background. He enjoys networking and building strong business partnerships. He is a diehard BYU fan and avid golfer. He graduated from BYU-I with a degree in communications. Ryan is a family man, married eight

years to his wife, Rebecca, and together they have three sons.

Melissa Worthen is an account executive and also directs community outreach.

She is actively involved in her community, and enjoys supporting non-profit organizations and fundraises to benefit others.

Her focus with marketing and advertising

is making connections with companies for long term growth that benefits local business and community. People are her primary focus. She is married with two children, two dogs and a rabbit.

Elissa Wall is an account executive who joined the sales team in 2015. She actively participates in community outreach programs throughout the state. She is eager to help her Journals’ customers find the right fit for advertising that will help their companies grow.

Steve Hession is an account executive who has worked for the Journals since 2009.

He has many years in advertising sales and sales management Steve and his wife Julie live in Sugar House.

Stacy Nielsen is the advertising coordinator. She has a background in sales and management and is a writer. Utah has been her home for seven years.

Melody Bunker is a designer at the City Journals. She is originally from the Philippines, where she spent 13 years designing newspapers. She currently attends classes at ITT and is married to her husband Jordan.

Trevor Roosa is a designer for the Journals. He attends The Art Institute of Salt Lake City and is studying graphic design.

EDUCATION Educators Honored By Murray Arts Advisory Board A Page 4 | January 2016

t the Murray Annual Art Awards, Murray Arts Advisory Board and Murray City Cultural Arts recently honored five Murray School District educators.

Former Superintendent Richard Tranter and Hillcrest performing arts teachers Krystin Elder, Sam Jewkes, Samijo Kioulious-Meiers and Jewell Loveless were recognized for their contribution to the arts in the community at the opening concert for Murray’s community winter season featuring the Murray Symphony on Oct. 24.

The awards presented were focused on the school and community partnerships related to Hillcrest Junior High’s new stage, affectionately nicknamed by the arts community as the “Theater at 53rd,” Murray City cultural arts director Mary Ann Kirk said.

“As part of National Arts and Humanities Month each year, the Murray Arts Advisory Board and Murray City Cultural Arts present community art awards to individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the arts in our community,” she said. “The Murray Arts Advisory Board brainstorms names of individuals each year for these awards. Sometimes it is one person, sometimes more. This year was very unusual because of the number, but we wanted to acknowledge all the players who made this happen.”

Each teacher received $100, while Tranter received flowers and an original ceramic vase handmade by Murray High teacher Ryan Moffet.

arts council for contributions to the arts,” Tranter said. “I worked closely with them as we incorporated the city and Murray School District with the recent building of Hillcrest Junior High’s stage and storage area that will be used for Murray City, Murray Symphony and our students.”

This collaboration was designed to enhance the school experience while providing space for community art organizations.

While Tranter denies having any experience in the arts, he said he is devoted to having them be available for the students and for the community.

“While I was a principal, I appreciated the

arts and recognized the value of how it helps children in so many ways. These teachers at Hillcrest contribute to young people with the arts and deserve to be recognized,” he said.

Kirk said Hillcrest teachers are “dedicated teachers providing instruction in vocal and instrumental music, theater, and dance which requires a great deal of time outside of the regular school day.”

Sam Jewkes teaches beginning band, concert band, orchestra, guitar and jazz ensemble.

He has often helped coordinate the summer music band program for elementary students.

Jewkes has taught for seven years, six of those in the Murray School District.

Jewell Loveless is the seventh-grade English honors and theater teacher. She also is the producer of the yearly musical and trains the tech crew. She has taught for eight years, all in the Murray School District.

Samijo Kioulious-Meiers teaches dance classes and seventh-grade health. She has taught two years in the Murray School District and has been instrumental in building the dance program at Hillcrest Junior High School.

In addition to these awards, Murray School District was thanked as a critical partner that provides access to substantial facilities at a reduced cost throughout the year for weekly rehearsals and performing seasons.

“Without this partnership, the community arts could not function,” Kirk said.

Also recognized with the educators was the Sorenson Foundation, which gave $125,000 to assist in the additional costs for building enhancements at Hillcrest Junior High. These included an expanded stage, Little Theater with dressing rooms, music rooms that can handle large orchestra rehearsals and a dance room. l

Roylance Takes Helm of Cottonwood High

ormer Churchill Junior High Principal Terri Roylance hadn’t planned on being principal at Cottonwood High. Former Cottonwood High Principal Alan R. Parrish hadn’t planned on leaving, but when Granite School District’s senior high school accountability

services director Mark Manning passed away early in the school year, it created a domino effect that put Parrish in Manning’s position, and Roylance found herself as the new high school principal.

“Mark Manning was just in that position one year after leaving Olympus High, and he was so respected and loved that it was hard for anyone to step in to take his place,” Roylance said. “Alan (Parrish) hadn’t planned to leave Cottonwood, but I’m so thankful I’m here and so excited to be part of this wonderful school.”

Roylance and Parrish began their new positions on Nov. 2.

By the third day, Roylance already had been initiated in Colt territory.

“On Monday we had Colt Night, where we show eighth and ninth graders all the wonderful things this high school offers, from music and dance to academics and clubs, sports and extra-curricular activities. I met a lot of students, parents and the PTSA (Parent-Teacher-Student Association) that night. On Tuesday, we held Academy of Finance Night for 500 or more of our students and Granite Technical Institute. I’ve also met with the School Community Council, so I’m already off and running,” she said on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

While Roylance admits she has a huge learning curve as she enters the high school already underway this school year, it hadn’t daunted her.

“I’m just so excited. I have a wonderful of-

fice staff who comes in and says, ‘Let me show you how we do this,’ and, ‘How can we support you?’ I have teachers who introduce themselves and tell me about their classes, students who are fabulous and courteous. There’s a lot to learn, but I am looking forward to it,” she said.

She’s even looking forward to next fall when about 500 ninth graders will enter high school, making Cottonwood a four-year high school.

These kids are experiencing the real life with lots of native speakers of several countries. I’d like to acknowledge those, post a map in the hall to recognize and celebrate our diversity,” she said.

To prepare for the new freshman class, which will increase the school enrollment of 1,243 students toward 1,800, Roylance will oversee some renovations and remodeling of the 1970 building, many of which were planned by Parrish. The projects will begin in April.

“I’ve walked through the building twice with Alan (Parrish) and have seen the plans for remodeling. We plan to take out the free-standing lockers and move the trophy cases by the entrance to the swimming pool area so we can make a more welcoming and signature foyer

and entrance. We want to offer soft seating that has connectivity for students for lunchtime, as well as before and after school. We plan to modernize classrooms that are under-utilized, like the drafting room, and convert that into four classrooms. We want to take out desktop computers and replace them with Chromebooks or laptops to update our technology,” she said.

Roylance, who loves gardening, hiking and driving her Volvo she named Kristen, earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Utah State University. She has her master’s in administrative leadership from Brigham Young University. In addition to serving at Churchill, she has been principal at Arcadia Elementary and assistant principal at Taylorsville High.

“It’s a lot to take on, but I’m so excited.

My favorite thing about high school is graduation. I’m the first in my family to graduate from college, and all six of my kids have graduated.

I realized I had opportunities for me when I graduated, where the door wasn’t open for my sisters and brother. I only have one niece out of 10 nieces and nephews, and the others have limited opportunities compared to my children and the one niece who graduated college.

I want to give that message to these students so when they realize, ‘I really graduated’ that they will have a direction to move on, whether its college, technical school or some additional training, and they will be excited and ready,” she said. l

Murray City Council - Year End 2015

f the many duties charged to the city council, budgeting and planning for the financial future of the city are of utmost importance.

Council members are always cognizant that funding decisions mean they are spending residents’ money and choices must be made responsibly, based on vital needs of the citizens and businesses, as well as those that increase your enjoyment of life.

When the council adopted the 2015-2016 Fiscal Year Budgets for Murray City and the Library Fund, two new firefighters/paramedics, two new police officers and a streets employee were funded and have been hired. Public safety in Murray City is a priority to the council, and we believe these new positions will ensure continued protection for residents.

A major segment of the budget is money allocated for capital projects. The Capital Improvement Project (CIP) is a five-year look into the future for long term planning and prioritization of city assets, including land, facilities, streets, utility systems, technology, equipment and vehicles. Capital projects funded during the last budget cycle that will be enjoyed by all city residents include park pavilion and restroom improvements, playground equipment replacement, animal shelter enhancements, pickle ball courts and road maintenance. Other major capital projects approved include citywide phone system replacement, fire engine purchase, 10 police patrol vehicles with equipment, and various other city vehicles that meet replacement guidelines for mileage and age.

Also approved were the cemetery irrigation system replacement, Murray Park armory concept plan, replacement of lighting in the amphitheater parking lot, replacement of picnic tables and the vita course equipment, and Murray Park roads and pathways. Approved for replacement was the ozone system in the Park Center pool and the purchase of new fitness equipment to replace some that is 10 years old.

Budgeted in the previous fiscal year, the city is in the process of implementing a complete new software program that will transform all document systems within the city.

Road projects approved include use of various techniques from pothole repair, slurry seal and overlays to complete rebuilds. Of the approximately 350 total lane miles in the city, this budget year 34 lane miles have been funded for maintenance. This amounts to nearly 10

percent of our roads. There is always sidewalk and ADA maintenance money allocated, along with radar speed signs to be erected, and the Jordan Parkway Trail resurfacing that was completed last summer.

The council adopted an Intent Document to explain council intent and general policy direction underlying the adoption of the budget.

Included in this document is an environmental component to promote, encourage and model conservation and eco-friendly practices in our city. The council supports implementation of an education process to provide residents with information relating to improving air quality; water and power conservation; reuse, recycling, waste reduction; and responsible disposal of hazardous materials.

In providing transparency for the business of the city, the council has funded and begun video streaming of council meetings. You can watch live or tune in afterward by going to the Murray City website at www.murray.utah.gov and clicking on the link on the front page of the website.

With this feature, we hope that residents will be encouraged to keep up with city government and get involved in ventures of interest.

To accommodate our growing bicycle community, bicycle lanes have been completed on Vine Street from the 5300 South Trax Station to 900 East, on 5900 South and on Winchester west of State Street. You will see shared lanes (bicycles and vehicles) in some areas, and a separate bicycle lane in other locations. Some travel lanes have been eliminated, however, turn lanes have been retained at intersections and on-street parking is allowed in front of residential areas. This is a great benefit to the Murray community for commuting or pleasure. We now boast a total of 10 miles of bicycle lanes in the city.

Downtown development is a priority for the council and administration. The council has approved, along with the Redevelopment Agency (RDA), an exclusive development agreement to pursue development of the Murray City Center District. This area is expected to have some of the following components: a new city hall, art center, parks and open space, trails and connectivity, commercial and residential projects, and one or more parking structures.

The goals for this area are to be pedestrian friendly and encourage use of transit options, to have a venue for dining, art and entertainment, attractive space for office and business uses, and to provide high quality urban living units to attract medical professionals, young professionals and empty nesters. Additionally, we hope to host community events and celebrations in open space areas. Our historic significance is an asset we will strive to include in development projects. This project is an exciting venture for our city; the transformation, development and construction will begin and continue through 2016 and 2017.

The General Plan is a guide document ultimately adopted by the city council to help decision makers evaluate growth and development proposals and implement desired future development for the community. The General Plan has an expected life of up to 10 years.

We are 10 months into the 18-month process, and currently components of the plan are being drafted. The plan development included public input at an open house in the fall of 2015.

The council approved elements of a scientific survey of residents to assist in the General Plan project. By late spring or early summer of 2016, the General Plan will come back to the city council for input and final adoption.

sponsibility charged to the city council. Numerous decisions were made to rezone specific properties in accordance with the current general plan. Amendments have been made relating to the Fireclay Transportation Master Plan, the Transit Oriented Development District Code, live/work units and landscape and façade improvements. Ordinances were enacted governing adequate public utilities for sub-divisions and developments, and relating to condominiums. Dental Labs were approved in the Residential Neighborhood Business District and string instrument manufacturing in the Murray City Center District.

The council has approved several resolutions to participate with surrounding cities, the county and the state to take advantage of mutual resources. We approved the Public Works Emergency Management Alliance; assistance to the State of Utah to fight wildland fires; Salt Lake County prisoner transport; Multi- Jurisdictional Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan; Salt Lake Area Gang Project; Salt Lake County Officer Involved Critical Incident Task Force; and an agreement between UPD and the city for major traffic collision investigation.

The city council approved an ordinance establishing citywide vote-by-mail elections.

Our turnout exceeded 41 percent, almost twice that of four years prior. Districts 1, 3, and 5 all re-elected their council members to serve for an additional four-year term. That speaks well for the satisfaction of residents with their governing body.

Keeping Murray City as the premier Utah community is important to city leaders and the city council, as your legislative body, works in unity to strengthen our growing city and yet preserve the small town atmosphere that residents love. l

Murray City Fire Department Revives Dog with CPR

T

wo dogs are safe at home with their loved ones, thanks to the quick thinking and response by Murray City Fire Department to a house fire on East Greenfield Ave. on Nov. 21, 2015.

“On our arrival, the owner occupants stated that their two dogs were still inside the house,” Joe Beard, Murray City Fire Department captain, said.

The first engine company engaged the fire that was located in the living room and quickly extinguished the fire. Two other crews were assigned to search the house for the dogs and any other possible occupants. Within a few minutes, both dogs were located and brought

out of the residence.

“Both dogs had been breathing the toxic smoke and were having difficulty breathing. At one point, one of the dogs stopped breathing and lost her heartbeat,” Beard said. “CPR was performed and was successful in resuscitating the dog.”

Both dogs were monitored and given oxygen until it was apparent they were recovering well. The residents of the home sincerely thanked the fire department for their service in helping to save their beloved pets.

“We were thanked repeatedly for our care and concern,” Beard said. l

he family workshop wrapped up with Murray School District elementary students singing Steve James’ songs, with the songwriter and his wife, Lisa, reminding students and their families of the evening’s underlying theme found in the anti-violence song, “I’ll Be Nice”: “I’ll be nice, I’ll be kind, Treat others right, Made up my mind.”

Sponsored by eight different organizations, presenters from Utah NetSmartz and Parents Empowers, as well as Murray High, took the Murray High School stage Oct. 22 to enlighten students and parents about how to keep students safe on the internet and prevent them from using drugs and alcohol.

“We have a positive approach with digital citizenship, and teach older students how to stay away from risks and what to do if they are approached by online predators,” said Brittani Johnson D’Ewart, northern region director for Utah NetSmartz. “We teach them how to see if they are predators, such as trying to flatter them, care about them, take their side on issues only to pull them away from friends and family.”

D’Ewart said that predators do this by invading students’ privacy through sexting and cyberbullying, often asking for an embarrassing photo to blackmail them with later.

“Keep your personal information private.

Even if your profile is private, they can copy and paste it to another site. Students think SnapChat isn’t permanent, but someone can take a screen shot and it’s there forever,” she said.

Murray District safe schools coordinator Deb Ashton said that according to a recent Utah Sharp survey, substance abuse begins in elementary and builds in junior and senior high school.

Ashton said there is misconception with the introduction of e-cigarettes.

“Many people see e–cigarettes and they don’t really understand them. They see hundreds of different flavors like vanilla cupcake, and adults and kids try them and just don’t realize they are a harmful choice. They feel like it’s a smart way to smoke since they are more sophisticated looking, but they can be very addicting since they contain nicotine,” she said.

The rage with e-cigarettes begins a little with sixth graders, but increases through eighth, 10th and 12th grades, both in Utah and nationally, Ashton said.

According to the student responses on the same state survey, the rate of alcohol use follows that same pattern, Parents Empowered chairman Doug Murakami said.

“Alcohol is the No. 1 substance abuse with youth, and if parents are involved in their kids’ lives, the use drops in half between sixth and 12th grades,” he said. “We realize as kids mature, they want their independence, and that is natural, but stay involved. Know their friends. If your kids’ friends are using alcohol, your child is in a greater risk.”

While Murakami said that parents can become complacent with alcohol use, he cautions them not to be since teen brains are still developing and the use of alcohol can impact that.

“We ask parents to bond and communicate with their children, to set boundaries and mentor them. Often when we ask juveniles who have been incarcerated because of abuse, they say they’re missing parent structure and knowing they have someone who loves and cares about them,” he said. “The bottom line — of all our talks — is to be involved in your child’s life, set rules and expectations and l communicate with them.”

his year, Salt Lake County government led the way on economic growth and jobs, low taxes, public safety and responsiveness to residents. As Utah continues to rebound from the Great Recession, we have an opportunity to take charge of our future and work together to show how we can make a bright future.

We’ve launched the Global Cities Initiative, which helps business and civic leaders in the metro region grow their business through exports and international connections. Evidence shows that it was the metro areas who led this country out of the recession and that when businesses receive support in learning how reaching new customers and global markets, their employees benefit, earning 17 percent more in salaries.

We opened new treatment options for individuals who end up in jail due to crimes related to mental illness or substance abuse.

With funding help from the Utah legislature, we opened a new community facility for adult women leaving incarceration. The 16-bed residential home allows these women to transition away from jail, get treatment, reunite with children and families and start establishing a more stable and productive path for their lives.

Salt Lake County brought more than 31

homeless service providers together around an exciting plan to minimize homelessness. For the first time, everyone is on the same page about we want to accomplish, beginning with recognizing and meeting the distinct needs of at-risk and homeless populations. As a coalition, we’re asking the Utah legislature to support our plan by providing money to build several new, smaller shelters that serve the needs of families with children, homeless individuals who are working and other specific groups.

A one-size-fits-all approach to this problem hasn’t worked in the past and we need to channel all the care, compassion, effort and money in a new direction.

With a sizeable grant from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, we’ve launched a community partnership in Kearns to improve child well-being throughout the township. Our framework—Evidence2Success—was developed by the foundation to collect data on the needs and the strengths of local youth. Granite School District will receive additional support to boost their educational programs and it will all be guided by the parents and community leaders who know their schools and neighborhoods best.

serve the entire community, through programs such as Meals on Wheels for senior citizens in need, education for coaches and parents on how to recognize and prevent head injuries, expanding senior centers, such as the one in Midvale, to support healthy lifestyles for “baby-boomers” and building three new regional parks, so that every family has a place to get outdoors and enjoy recreational activities together.

In 2016, we’ll rededicate our efforts to reform the criminal justice system and by achieving that, improve public safety. My 2016 budget, adopted by a bipartisan County Council vote, provides funding to meet the immediate needs of the Sheriff, the jail, the District Attorney and the Behavioral Health Division in the short term, as well as money for innovative projects to prevent crime in the long term.

win Peaks’ third annual culture night is more than tasting samples of international cuisine; it’s a chance to link the school, said Paige Janzen, who as the former Parent-Teacher Association president, began the tradition she now coordinates.

“We have an international population and it’s a chance for our students to get to know all cultures who live and go to school here,” Janzen said. “It’s a chance to unify all populations in our school.”

Janzen said that the PTA invites students and parents to share their cultures at the night. Students listened to guitar music and tried their hand at a game using Chinese chopsticks. Most countries this year featured traditional food for students to sample.

Parent Zarella Diaz brought her Peruvian dishes of chicken with chili peppers, purple corn and pudding.

“I’m proud of my roots,” said the mother of a second grader and fourth grader. “I’m happy to share my culture with the kids, bring my country here, so they can learn a part of Peru.”

tin dessert, Costa Rican rice and Norwegian cheese and crackers were some of the international foods students sampled.

“The food tastes good,” sixth grader Kaleb Wilcox said. “I liked the German sausage and learned in Mexico, they make Jell-O with milk.”

Kaleb, who was there with his mother, Yanett, displayed a table from Ecuador, her family’s heritage.

“I was asked at parent-teacher conferences to share about our culture,” Wilcox said. “Three years ago, we visited Ecuador and showed my daughter and son their traditions and how kids are raised there. Kids here attend school. They play video games here, but not there. They are selling candy and working to help support parents. My kids learned they have more opportunities here.”

Yanett, who also has taught her children about traditions from her homeland, wants them to appreciate other countries.

“This night is a good idea. It gives my son a chance to learn about others,” she said.

Janzen said that was the idea behind the culture night.

“It gives everyone an appreciation

and understanding of other cultures. In the past we’ve learned dances, made leis, sang songs, played games, learned art and have had fun in some interactive experience learning about a country,” she said.

Some students presented countries they reported on for class projects or have appreciated after learning about their culture and traditions. That is the case for fifth grader Isabel Easterbrook who shared a display of Israel.

Isabel’s understanding of the country began two years ago when she began attending the Jewish Community Center as an after-school and summer day care program.

“They are very accepting of everyone, and she has made so many good friends and learned so much about others there,” her mother, Rebecca, said.

Isabel appreciates the country’s traditions and celebrations, including the weekly practice of Shabbat, a festive day when Jews have a day of rest to contemplate the spiritual aspects of life and to spend time with family. She has learned about Hanukkah — playing of the dreidel, or spinning top; the Menorah, a nine-branched candelabrum lit each night of the holiday; and making latkes or potato pancakes, which she’d like to make with her own family.

“Being there has made me want to learn more about their culture,” Isabel said.

In addition to learning about cultures, Janzen said it also is about building community within the school.

Residencies are scheduled January through February in multiple locations. Most schools will also host in school residencies for one grade level. Murray School District, Friends for Sight Provide Free Eyeglasses for Students

ometimes things appear a little clearer with a little help.

That’s just what Murray School District administrators wanted — to help school children be able to see better. So they teamed up with Friends for Sight, which provided free glasses to economically disadvantaged students in elementary schools and junior highs.

“If we’re able to find a way to reach out to identify these students in need of glasses who aren’t able to find ways to obtain them, then we’ll do it,” Murray School District director of student services Darren Dean said. “It’s huge that we can help so many be fitted for glasses so they can improve in school and life in general.”

As part of Sightfest, 54 students from Murray School District, as well as 36 from Esperanza School, received full eye exams from six optometrists who donated their services.

They were able to test students with the use of mobile vision equipment provided through a partnership with Essilor Vision Foundation, the leading manufacturer of optical lenses in the United States, that also provided free lab work, frames and lenses.

The collaboration extended beyond Friends for Sight, which has helped more than 1.2 million people since 1955, and Essilor Vision Foundation to include CharityVision, a non-profit organization that supports local physicians to create sustainable solutions to blindness worldwide, and Utah Optometric

Association, which assures the delivery of quality vision care to Utah patients.

Of those students examined, 85 students were expected to receive free glasses in December, and seven percent will receive free follow-up care for Amblyopia, a preventable form of blindness, said Kate Edwards, Friends for Sight executive director.

Edwards said that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that vision disorders are the most prevalent handicapping childhood disorder in the United States.

“Children need to be able to see well to read, learn and develop social skills effectively,” she said.

She said if they are unable to see, children with uncorrected vision are more likely to drop out of school and may go on to face lifelong struggles with literacy, low self-esteem and unemployment.

Dean said the purpose of this partnership is to get corrective glasses for children by eliminating obstacles, such as financial burden, parents’ work schedules, time commitments and transportation issues.

Initially, eye-screening exams were given at the school by the district nursing staff and volunteers. Then, with the help of counselors and nurses, letters and calls were made to parents about the free eyeglass opportunity.

“We wanted them to know that we partnered with Friends for Sight and they could assist them without any additional stress or strains on their schedules and finances. When we can help these students be able to see better, it’s just fantastic,” he said.

Edwards credits the district with reaching out.

“They realized the importance of this opportunity, and the nurses and staff took the time to reach the parents and make sure consent forms were turned back in so they could get the help they need,” she said.

She also said that with the Nov. 20 Sightfest, about 115 volunteers turned out, including some from the Murray Chamber, SelectHealth and Intermountain Healthcare, and former mayor Dan Snarr.

“It was a great collaboration to help children of low income, and the volunteers helped make it possible,” Edwards said, who added that they plan to hold a second Sightfest Jan. 20 to benefit Granite School District students.

Dean said that it was the first time the groups had collaborated, and he would like to continue it next year.

“I’d like to reach out to more students, especially those in junior high, and make sure they’re getting their eyes tested. Hopefully, we’ll be able to help more students through volunteers and through the support of Friends for Sight. We want all our students to have a chance to be successful,” he said. l

ore than a decade ago, Perry Hall and a few cycling buddies had a vision: they imagined a cycling team where all members worked towards a common goal - a team built on the foundation of camaraderie and passion for the sport.

“Before the team, we felt like there was no common goals in racing. We would go to a race and think, ‘Who are we really working for?’

And that’s how we kind of got our start,” Hall said. “As we’ve grown, the team has become a very tight-knit group of people.”

Slowly this founding group of five riders began raising money and seeking out other riders who were interested in riding for the greater good of the team.

“You could do a lot of training and never be The Chosen One, so to speak,” Hall said.

“Some people are OK with that, others are not.

With us, though, it’s all about what your ability is and how those abilities align with team goals. So, it’s really a lot about giving and not much taking.”

This central theme caught the attention of Intermountain’s TOSH - The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital. In 2012 TOSH signed on as the official sponsor of the team, deeming the group Team TOSH, and has since provided the team with equipment, racing kits and much more.

“The TOSH brand has really helped to increase awareness about our team and has certainly allowed us to expand more,” Hall said.

“TOSH has specifically helped us expand our women’s team, which has been a really, really fun thing to add because the women are just as competitive and good as we are.”

Since opening the team up to women nearly three years ago, Team TOSH has undergone a monumental change in dynamics by including several female riders on the roster.

Mary Emerson, one of six female riders on the team, just finished her first season riding with TOSH. Though Emerson began cycling in 2010, it wasn’t until two years ago that she found her passion for racing.

“After I won my first race, I was hooked,” Emerson said. “But this was my first year racing with TOSH and I really, really enjoyed racing with the team. We have an incredibly diverse team of women in terms of age, interests and jobs, which makes it really fun.”

Emerson, like several other members on Team TOSH, is a medical professional working as a pediatric physical therapist for Primary Children’s Hospital. As an Intermountain employee for more than18 years, Emerson is honored to be a part of the TOSH-sponsored group.

“Riding for a team that is part of my company has been really rewarding,” Emerson said. “The Intermountain mission for living a healthy lifestyle in both your personal and professional life has been so true to what my personal beliefs have been like all my life, and this makes riding for the organization even better.”

Becoming a member of Team TOSH is much different than one may assume. There are no tryouts, membership isn’t based on race results, and riders aren’t accepted just because

they have talent. On Team TOSH, prospective members are required to ride with the team for an entire year before becoming a sponsored rider.

“It’s somewhat of a vetting-type process,” Hall said. “We don’t ever really take anyone on, or give them the full ride-along during their first year of riding with us, regardless of what their talents are, because they need to fit into the team.”

Though this unique group-decision process causes the team to grow slower, Hall believes it’s a leading reason why the group has such great chemistry, camaraderie and support for one another.

“Creating the women’s team was probably the fastest we’ve ever added people, but we knew them and had ridden with them before,” Hall said. “In reality though, we probably only grow by one or two riders a year.”

The team of 22 riders is small in numbers compared to other amateur cycling teams in Utah. That’s not to say, however, that the team lacks talent. Team TOSH operates similarly to that of a family unit, with each rider playing a key role in the success and overall well-being of the team.

“Everyone has their own personality,” Heidi Nielson, the team’s captain and social media manager, said. “Like when we’re all together I tend to have more of a ‘mom’ personality, you know, I make sure everyone is happy and well taken care of and has a good race things like that. And then Mary [Emerson] is like our phenomenal strength rider and is really aggressive. Then we have Ellie Hirshberg who is the toughest mental rider I’ve ever met.

We have another girl who just puts her head down and grinds and all you want to do is get

behind her.”

Together, these personalities combine to create a solid fellowship rich with vigor and enthusiasm for cycling. Whether Team TOSH is practicing tirelessly during training trips in St. George or heading up Millcreek Canyon for an impromptu group ride, the riders’ support for one other is unrivaled.

“I’ve ridden with mostly men for more than 25 years,” Megan Lowe, a member of the women’s team for two years, said. “And men on this team are outstanding. But what I’ve been most impressed with on Team TOSH is the atmosphere and camaraderie of the group.

Each member goes out of their way to help you develop as a rider and as a racer. Everyone is willing to teach and lead, and that’s not always the case with cycling teams.”

The sportsmanship embodied by Team TOSH has not only helped the team grow in popularity, but it’s also garnered the attention and support of other businesses around the Salt Lake City area. Hyperthreads, an up-andcoming custom clothing manufacturer based in Ogden, approached Team TOSH in 2014 and offered to sponsor the group by providing clothing and kits for their elite racing team.

“Our ownership and most of our employees are all racers and riders,” Spenser Storey, Hyperthread’s general manager, said. “Team TOSH is a well-known team and the all of the members are very reputable - they’re doctors, nurses and other professional people, and this is something that we really wanted to align ourselves with.”

Today, the group is officially named Team TOSH Cycling Powered by Hyperthreads.

riders have landed at the top of many race podiums over the past two years.

Lowe, for example, placed first in both the Porcupine Hill Climb and High Uintahs Road Race, and men’s rider Kent Carlson placed first in his category at the LoToJa Classic in 2014.

In September 2015, the women’s team found great success at the LoToJa Classic after three Team TOSH riders clenched podium positions.

Despite the cold winter months, members of Team TOSH continue to work and improve as riders. While some riders train indoors by rowing, spinning and weight lifting, other members race year round in road bike, mountain bike and cyclocross races.

“There are mountain bike and road races almost every weekend from April through September,” Hall said. “Cyclocross races start in the fall and continue throughout the winter until the road season starts ramping up. So some of these guys on the team do road, and then right into cross, and from cross they go right back into road again.”

Though Team TOSH is an elite, hardworking team of exceptionally talented riders, they never lose sight of core values: be supportive of one another, work for the common good of the team and enjoy the sport of cycling.

“We’re not a pro-team - we’re just cyclists out having fun, but work well together and keep the team’s best interest at heart,” Nielson said. l

ith the beginning of a new year, many take stock of their lives and make resolutions for change. After looking online at the top resolutions people make, most of us desire the same things in life. I like reflecting on resolutions and l look forward to making efforts for change and growth.

In city government, a new year can also bring change. Some governments run on calendar years and their new budgets start on January 1. You may have heard that Salt Lake County just passed their budget for 2016. Murray City’s budget runs on a fiscal year and our current budget started July 1 and will run until June 30, 2016.

Some of the contracts for city services start or renew the first part of the year. Our garbage services is one that just expired and the new 5-year contract started on January 1.

However, with the new contract, there will be some changes to our fees and services.

Recycling will now be collected on a weekly basis. If you are like me, my recycling bin fills up in one week and then I put my recycling items in my regular waste bin

for the next week. We hope this change will be of help with your efforts to recycle. The day of the week your container is collected will not change, it will just be on a weekly basis and you won’t have to check to see if your neighbor has placed his recycling bin out in order to remember which week it will be picked up.

wo years ago, Murray didn’t have a high school cycling league. That all changed, however, when the executive director of the Utah High School Cycling League, Lori Harward, made a phone call to Murray resident Shane Everston.

“She reached out to me and asked if I wanted to coach,” Everston said, “but at the

time I was super busy, and I told her I just couldn’t do it.”

Harward was persistent, though, and didn’t take no for an answer. Everson finally agreed to add coaching a mountain biking team into his busy schedule.

could probably put those two together.’”

What attracted Everston to the idea of coaching a mountain biking team was the timelessness of the sport: the fact that kids can grow a passion for a sport that will last them a lifetime.

“You know, instead of playing soccer and getting hurt, or playing soccer and graduating high school and never playing soccer again,

there’s just no venue for those kinds of sports after you’re done with school,” Everston said.

“I like healthy lifestyles and I love to mountain bike, and I was excited to help kids get a passion for it.”

After spreading the word of a mountain biking team coming to Murray High School, just four kids signed up for the league. This year, that number has tripled and 12 students, ten boys and two girls, comprise the Murray team.

The surge of students joining the Murray team is a minor reflection of the influx of kids getting involved in the league across the state.

In 2014 the league grew by 67 percent, making Utah home to largest league in the National Interscholastic Cycling Association.

With nearly 1,400 students joining the league in 2015, Everston has high hopes for the future of Murray mountain biking. He’s expecting the team will double in size over the next two years.

“We can accommodate any kid that wants to ride,” said Everston. “The lack of equipment or a bike will never be a reason a kid can’t ride.

This is a very inclusive organization.”

Thanks to incredible support from Murray City, the Murray Recreation Center and financial sponsor, Recovery Way, the Murray mountain biking team is able to practice and train in the best way possible.

The 12 riders prepare for competition with daily balance drills, running drills and sports clinics that help them improve their all-around athleticism. However, because Murray’s location doesn’t provide immediate access to mountain trails, the team is looking for other places to ride besides the street.

“We’re working right now with Murray City to create a pump track at Germania Park,” Everston said. “This track will really encourage kids to ride and help them be able to ride without having their parents take them up to the mountains.” l

Jenkins-Soffe

P

ersonal family tragedy played a major role in the events leading to the creation of what is today Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary.

George A. Jenkins, a Midvale barber, and his wife, Annetta Pearl Williams, had lost five children, thus becoming familiar to Bank’s Mortuary in Midvale. As a result of their frequent--albeit unhappy--relationship, the mortician asked George to assist him with funeral services. Over a period of time, this led to the suggestion that the two become partners in the mortuary. On the eve of signing the necessary papers to make the partnership a reality, Mr. Banks passed away and the agreement never took place.

In anticipation of the partnership, George sold his barbershop. Determined that he would become a funeral director, George and Annetta Jenkins decided to open their own mortuary in Murray. His first call was on Dec. 15, 1915.

Twenty years later, in February of 1935, the Jenkins and Soffe families became one.

George and Annetta’s daughter, Mary B. Jenkins, and Vaughn C. Soffe of South Jordan, met at Utah State University. Vaughn and Mary married and were blessed with three children:

Carol Ann, Jaren and Gregg. Vaughn joined his father-in-law in 1938: thus, the blended name of Jenkins-Soffe.

It’s now 2015, the 100th anniversary for Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Homes & Cremation Center, the oldest business in Murray. As a way to celebrate, Jenkins-Soffe is giving back to the community. They coordinated construction of a new garden area at the Boys & Girls Club in Murray, which was dedicated on Sept.

1, 2015 to memorialize Micah Hansen, a very special 11-year-old boy who died in a tragic drowning on April 17, 2014.

Micah was playing in the pool with his cousins while on vacation in Southern California, when the game they were playing went tragically wrong. “They were holding their breath under water to see who could hold it the longest, when his two cousins noticed that he was holding his breath way too long to be believed,” said Terry Hansen, Micah’s grandmother. After struggling for a few days in the hospital, he passed away. “He could make friends with everybody and was so accepting of everyone he met. He could make

friends with strangers within minutes,” his grandmother said. “We are so touched that Jenkins-Soffe and the Boys & Girls Club have done this for Micah and our family.”

Kurt L. Soffe, owner of Jenkins-Soffe, said, “As a young boy the Murray Boys & Girls Club gave me and my friends a positive environment to grow and learn. As our Jenkins-Soffe family celebrates 100 years in Murray, we pay tribute to the positive values offered by the Murray Boys & Girls Club. Micah Hansen was part of that family and we honor his memory for the influence he made in his friends and in the lives he touched.”

ne in five Utah children are not sure where their next meal is coming from and one in seven Utahns are at risk of missing a meal each day, according to the Utah Food Bank.

Two Murray schools decided to hold food drives this holiday season to help, by donating canned goods for Utahns in need.

Woodstock Elementary held its third annual “Cans for Cocoa” each Friday during December to help fill the pantry stored at Granger High School that serves families in need in the area.

When any student brought in cans of food, the Parent-Teacher Association would give all the students at the school hot cocoa with all the trimmings, Principal Yvonne Pearson said.

About 1,800 cans were donated, Parent-Teacher Association President Natalie Wonnacott said.

The week before Thanksgiving, Liberty Elementary Student Council held a food drive to benefit the Utah Food Bank.

The students came up with a fun daily competition between the classes to reach the

school’s goal of collecting 500 pounds of food and a minimum of $50 in cash donations, said Cyndi Boulden, Liberty Elementary Student Council coordinator.

However, Liberty exceeded its goal with 896 pounds of food that the Utah Food Bank estimated will provide 2,756 meals for Utah families, Boulden said. They also raised $514 in cash donations.

“There was an amazing amount of energy and excitement amongst the students, teachers and families,” Boulden said. “By the end of the week our school had overflowed the five bins plus a couple boxes. I am so proud of Liberty’s families, staff and students for working together to provide support for Utah families.” l

sports Maxs Tupai Named Semifinalist for Butkus Award

n Nov. 2, the Butkus Foundation announced the 16 semifinalists still in the running for football’s infamous Butkus Award. Maxs Tupai of Murray High School is one of the remaining nominees. Established in 1985, this award honors the elite athleticism and community service of the nation’s best high school, collegiate and professional linebackers.

Dick Butkus played nine seasons with the Chicago Bears from 1965 through 1973 and was deemed “The Most Feared Man In Football” by Sports Illustrated. Those who watched Butkus play were enamored with his focus on the game and his consistently hard tackles on the field – many of which are still considered some of the NFL’s Greatest Hits.

Though Butkus played with unrivaled ferocity, intensity and aggressiveness, he maintained a passion for philanthropy and fair play. In 1985 an organization in Orlando, Florida approached Butkus about inaugurating an annual Butkus Award to honor the nation’s top collegiate linebacker.

In 2008, the Orlando organization returned stewardship of the award to the Butkus family where, together with his family, Mr. Butkus established The Butkus Foundation.

Almost immediately, the Foundation sought to expand the award’s honor beyond the strict ranks of college football by including both high school and professional linebackers.

The Foundation also used the expansion of the award as an awareness generator for a program called I Play Clean, a campaign that encourages players to avoid performance-enhancing drugs.

out with a Watch List of 51 high school linebackers and 51 collegiate linebackers,” said Ron Arp, president of The Butkus Foundation. “The reason we chose the number 51 is because that is the professional jersey of Mr. Butkus that has since been retired for the Chicago Bears.”

Tupai, a senior at Murray High School, landed on the 2015 Butkus Award Watch List in mid-July and has remained a contender after the foundation selected just 16 semifinalists in early November.

“Maxs is known at Murray High as an outstanding student and a fantastic athlete,” said Mike Richmond, head coach of the Murray Spartans. “He is one of the nicest kids I’ve ever met. I even had a teacher tell me about a time when Maxs and a few other players helped her change a flat tire in the school

parking lot.”

Richmond, who’s been coaching Tupai since he was eight years old, isn’t surprised at the linebacker’s nomination for the Butkus Award.

“Maxs performs at an extremely high level,” Richmond said. “He plays linebacker on defense and stays on the field to play running back on offense. He hardly ever gets a rest.

Most linebackers get to take a break while offense runs the field, but not Maxs. And that makes this honor even more special.”

Like Butkus, Tupai encourages his teammates to be the best they can be, both on and off the field. Whether he’s inspiring fellow players to get involved during service projects or pumping his team up before a game, the energy and confidence Tupai exudes reverberates throughout the entire team.

“When Maxs is playing his best, he brings out the best in the team,” Richmond said. “And that alone is unique.”

The Butkus Award list of five finalists was released Nov. 23 (after press deadline), with winners being chosen on or before Dec. 8. Never in Utah history has a college or high school linebacker been named the Butkus l Award Winner.

Cottonwood High School Boy’s Basketball Team Shoots for Successful Season

hough the 2015-2016 Cottonwood High School boy’s basketball team faces their fair share of challenges this season, head coach Bernie Graziano, who coached his first season with the Colts last year, is confident that the group’s skill level and hard work will result in success.

“I really believe in our kids this year,” Graziano said. “We’ve got great guard play and some stand out leaders on the team.”

With just five returning seniors on the 15-member varsity team, the group is largely comprised of juniors and only two sophomores. Many of these players, however, have already exemplified dedication, strong work ethic and an eagerness to succeed.

“Jaron Anderson and Noah Montano and Malik Johnson have a lot of experience,” Graziano said when discussing the dynamics of the team and the group’s overall leadership.

Along with showing captaincy on the court, these three players also lead the team in both talent and skill. Standing at 6’5 Anderson is the Colt’s tallest player and led the team in scoring last year. Johnson, a junior point guard, started playing for Cottonwood last year as a

sophomore.

“Malik has a heart as big as a gym,” Graziano said. “He plays so hard, he’s a very selfless player and he works so hard to get his teammates the basketball.”

Montano, a 6’2 senior, started on varsity last year as a shooting guard and, along with Anderson, is expected to be one of the team’s elite scorers again this season.

Though the Colts have exceptional leadership and a balanced team dynamic, Graziano is concerned about the challenges the group will face as they compete against other 5A teams like rival high school Taylorsville.

“We are basically a team of guards. We literally do not have any size,” Graziano said.

“How we defend at the post will be our biggest challenge just because we’re so small you know. We’re playing against schools with Division 1 players and other teams that are just bigger than us.”

I am Grateful for the Poor Man’s Casserole

I

t slapped me in the face, like an old Three Stooges movie. Last month my husband came home from work holding a large envelope. Handing it over, he simply stated, “Read this.” My heart sank. You see, every year in December, his company does their annual, “Merry Christmas layoff,” and I was certain it was his turn. I began to hyperventilate, sweat trickled down my forehead as my trembling hands opened the letter. How could they, after 26 years of company loyalty? They can’t! We are only four years from retirement! As I read and re-read the words on the letter, my mind began to compute: not a layoff letter, but a retirement letter. In two weeks, TWO weeks, my husband would be retired! Could we do it a full four years before we had planned? Yikes!

Now, I have a confession to make. We have not always enjoyed a frugal lifestyle; in fact, in the early years of our marriage it was quite the opposite. We lived to the point of an extravagance that almost sent us bust.

We lived right at the edge of our means, throwing caution to the wind, buying now

and vowing to save later. Then it happened, our turning point: my husband lost his job. It was the 80s. Remember those days? With 14 percent home interest rates, no jobs and two kids, we quickly discovered our skinny bank account and high debt had put us at the brink of disaster.

What could we do? We had officially hit what we call our “Poor Man’s Casserole” days.

One only needs to Google “Getting out of debt” to find a plethora of advice from financial savvy experts: refinance the house, make budgeting lists and spreadsheets to track payoffs, start by paying off the highest interest loan rate, etc. All good practices, but what if you don’t qualify for said refinance, or your budget doesn’t cover your bills, let alone allow you to make extra payments? How will making a list help when what you really need is money today?

The fact is, finding immediate money in a set budget takes sacrifice, creativity, work and commitment. Here are some practical tips for increasing your finances that I’ve learned and used along the way.

#1 – Ditch the luxuries. Cutting cable TV, gym memberships, and eating out top my list of quick ways to save some serious cash.

Brown bag it for lunch, discover Hulu for TV entertainment and take a walk instead of utilizing an expensive gym treadmill. #2 – Sell your stuff. Cleaning out the clutter not only can bring in some extra cash, but it clears the mind of clutter and helps you get organized. Utilize your local consignment store (check Yelp.com for a list of several), make use of online classifieds or give Ebay a try. #3 – Find alternative ways to travel. If you have two cars, sell one. Try taking TRAX or carpooling to work. #4 – Cut your grocery costs. Groceries can be a huge part of the family expenses. Instead of planning your shopping for the meals you want, plan your meals to what’s on sale. Clip or print coupons. You can check Coupons4Utah. com’s “grocery” section for a list of resources.

Cut your meat portions in half. For years our mainstays were casseroles and Mexican and Italian dishes like lasagna and pizza. It’s easy to decrease the meat in those kinds of dishes.

One of our favorites was called Poor Man’s Casserole, a mixture of ground beef, green beans and mashed potatoes. #5 – Find contentment with what you have. This was a turning point for me, and one of the best pieces of financial advice I have. In my own personal experience, it took me years to feel contentment with what I have. Once I did, I found that the longing for things grew smaller, and I was able to learn to experience what life had to give. I am grateful for the Poor Man’s Casserole days and the contentment it brought me.

Poor Man’s Casserole: Brown 2/3 lb. of ground beef or turkey with ½ an onion. Salt and pepper to taste and place in the bottom of a three qt. round casserole dish. Drain two cans of green beans and layer on top of the beef. Layer one can cream of mushroom soup on top of beans and top with about three cups of smashed potatoes (about five potatoes boiled in salty water and smashed with a little milk and butter). Microwave on high until hot (about 10 to 15 minutes). Enjoy. l

Making a Clean Sweep

A

s long as everything stays the same, I’m super cool with change. So when January rolls around with all its high-pressure resolutions and soul-destroying goals, I choose to decline. After years of making unobtainable promises, I know I won’t learn a new language, acquire the ability to run marathons or stop eating candy by the pound.

But this year I decided it was time to get rid of the clutter that had infiltrated my home when I wasn’t looking. On January 1, my house seemed as organized as the shelves at Dollar Tree the day after Christmas, so I thought maybe it was time to clean things up.

(FYI: Because Americans have so much junk, there’s a store that sells only containers to store our stuff. There are even boxes to store our boxes. Crazy, I know.)

I’ve heard when you’re organized, you can be lazy. That was incentive enough to get

started. Once my mess was stashed away in designer bins, I’d have more time for napping, Pinteresting or sitting on the porch with a cold drink. (Well, not in January, but at some point this year.)

My kitchen was the first place I tackled.

I thought it would go quickly until I started throwing out cans of soup that had expired in 2009, quinoa I bought during my whole-grain phase and bags of organic kelp that were never opened. That’s when I realized this project could take longer than I anticipated.

The freezer was next. I tossed out Ziplocs filled with frozen flesh from indeterminate sources (could be salmon, could be sausage) and Fudgsicles coated with ice crystals.

Healthy Habit Tofu Extravaganza meals I couldn’t choke down were sent to the trash bin.

After taking a breather to eat a bag of Almond Roca (Christmas clearance!), I headed

to the bedroom to sort through my clothes.

Cleaning the closet is difficult, because I’m pretty sure I wear all my clothes every day.

But I found the dress I wore to my mom’s second wedding, ballet shoes from dance class 35 years ago, the sequined skirt I swore I’d wear once I lost 25 pounds and a ketchup-stained T-shirt from my first major league ballgame.

Gone.

Then I attacked the bathroom. I thought it might be easier to throw a grenade into the bathtub, shut the door and walk away action-hero style, in slow motion.

I’m truly not a hoarder. I just figure at some point I will use the dozens of hotel shampoos and travel-sized body washes I’ve saved for emergencies.

I dug into my drawers (so to speak) and purged almost-empty hair spray bottles, driedup face masks, greasy lotions and anti-aging

creams that did not work. I tossed cold tablets from the 1980s, stretched-out hair elastics and a tube of ... something unidentifiable.

Then I turned to my desk where office products go to die. I found a roll of two-cent stamps, dried up pens that were too far from the garbage can to throw out, tons of cable connectors (although I’m not sure what they connect), enough Post-it notes to write a novel and several used gift cards with a total balance of $1.57.

I finally collapsed on the couch, reveling in the afterglow of a job well done. My house felt lighter, like it had gone on a green juice cleanse, and I was pleased with my Zen-like non-attachment to material possessions.

That’s when I realized I had room for new stuff! And there were New Year’s sales! Maybe next year I’ll add, “Don’t buy more junk” to l my list of soul-crushing resolutions.
