Skyline unified soccer teams place in top four at state, develop lifelong friendships

I

t was pouring rain during most of the state qualifying games on Oct. 8, and again at the state consolation finals and finals at Rio Tinto stadium Oct. 9, yet Skyline High’s unified soccer teams had smiles on their faces.

“It’s been fun,” said junior Gabe Silva who is a student-athlete on the team.

“I talked my best friend into playing with me.”

His best friend is senior Aubree Mackay, who he met this year. She is a peer tutor for his PE class.

“I said, ‘you play unified soccer, that’s so cool,’” she said. “Then he asked me to join, so I joined for him. I get to see Gabe, hang out and support unified sports to make our school community more inclusive.”

Unified soccer is a UHSAA-sanctioned sport supported by Special Olympics Utah that joins high school-age students with and without intellectual disabilities playing side-by-side on the same sports teams. In soccer, five players take to a smaller-sized field; this year, high school teams from across the state played in either competitive or player development divisions.

Through playing unified sports, students build friendships and inclusiveness as well as to improve sports skills, said Unified Champion Schools manager Courtnie Worthen, who hopes all students are supported in their community to succeed and belong.

“We hope this helps to create lasting friendships,” she said. “When you’re approximate to someone who’s different than you, you learn that they are people too.

You learn why they are different, and you can appreciate their differences and you can understand your similarities.”

This year’s state tournament consolation finals and finals in each of the four divisions were held at Rio Tinto for the first time, promoted by Utah First Lady Abby Cox’s statewide “Show Up” initiative.

After a player and coach oath, an athlete, accompanied by her highway patrolman father and Gov. Spencer Cox, lit the torch. The First Lady and other community leaders had previously announced the desire to introduce the unified sports program to more schools—from 40 across the state to 100 by the 2022-23 school year—and expand it from soccer, basketball and track to more sports. Jordan Education Foundation, Salt Lake Bees, South Jordan and Mountain View Village (Riverton) Chick-fil-A franchises and the Joe and Renae Ingles family were the first to pledge their support.

Worthen said the program isn’t just for high schools, some which also have unified sports PE classes. There also is a young athletes’ program in elementary schools and unified programs also are being introduced at the college level.

Unified Champion School’s college-growth coordinator Boston Iacobazzi, who was a partner athlete for his high school and then continued to be instrumental in beginning and playing for the RSL unified program, now is reaching out to higher education institutions to support the program.

“When partners and others get to know the athletes and become more involved in accepting them at their lunch tables and proms, it changes the climate and culture,” he said. “I gained friendships and never had so much fun on any sports team or as SBO (student body) president than I did with unified sports. It is so much fun, so high energy and we just cheer, sing and dance and want everyone to succeed. Having the tournament at Rio Tinto gives these teams the same opportunities as the boys and girls high school soccer teams being hosted there.”

the player development divisions.

They also participated in a regional competition where “our team had a blast,” said Jeff Fons, who coached the team alongside special education teacher Kelsee Kellogg.

Kellogg said that they had so many come out to participate, including two Olympus High students who volunteered to help, that “we split them up in two teams,” she said. “I love sports and have always wanted to be a coach. The kids were really stoked about getting to play unified soccer and create lasting friendships with their partners.”

Fons said that they celebrate passes,

shots on goals and great plays.

“They’re cheering and celebrating each other like it’s the Olympics or they’ve cured cancer,” he said, adding that they danced right on the field at the regional tournament when they announced their names and school. “It was pure joy to see them having so much fun.”

Kellogg has those friendships on the field translate to the halls of the school.

“They give each other high-5s on campus and know they’re on the same team whether they’re playing or just at school,” she said. “It’s been great. My students see them as their new best friends; they instantly are friends for life.” l

Venture Out! brings Halloween fun to Millcreek

M

illcreek City, organized by Venture Out!, has finished its 10th annual Millfreaks event. Groups were able to sign up for $25 per car for the fun-filled night.

Each group was in and out of their car as they traveled to various venues in Millcreek to enjoy great shows, photo opportunities and entertainment. Each tour lasted approximately two and a half hours.

The city’s new event director, Aimee McConkie, said it was a group of Canyon Rim residents who initially organized the annual event before being run by Venture Out!. In 2020 the event was recreated as an entertainment scavenger hunt due to Covid.

“People had such a good time with the event that the format was replicated in 2021,” McConkie said. “The new format lets people explore new parks and areas of Millcreek. It is challenging setting up and programing four different venues, but participants love the excitement and variety of the new Millfreaks.”

Oct. 16 was the 10th year of Millfreaks, a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt. Villains were lurking around at Millcreek’s four stops called realms. Families joined for an entertainment hunt that winded through Millcreek’s familiar, wild, and often unknown spaces to disrupt the villains’ objectives. It was the ultimate trick or treat experience.

Some activities for the event encouraged decorating cars and dressing up and contests for each. Brandi Henderson and her children, Rylee, Oakley and Bentley all came dressed for the night in scary costumes and their car had orange lights on top and a lit-up inflatable ghost out the sunroof. When asked what they looked forward to the most, Henderson said, “We’re excited for the scavenger hunt, of course.”

The first location or realm was the track field at Skyline High School. The goal of this location was to get excited and get moving. Groups were able to watch the Marcus & Guy’s comedic video to introduce the game. The idea of this was mostly for adults to be witty and clever, but with silly people to keep children interested as well. Groups were also able to run through a bounce house and obstacle course, run on the witches’ treadmill, throw darts at the ghosts, walk the plank, and finally end with the ZOINK candy shoot.

Duy Beck, a Millcreek resident and active professional stunt man said, “The first stop was really the most fun of them all. It was aimed for children, but when you just let go and have fun with friends, there was a lot of activities to do. And getting candy at the end of all the fun activities was a nice treat.” Beck also showed a young ninja how to do a back flip at the top of the inflatable bounce house onto

the slide and told him to keep up with his parkour.

The second stop (realm) was at the Olympus Hills Shopping Center. Groups

were able to watch Marcus & Guy’s second comical-quest video. At different times throughout the event, there were performances by Thompson Lane of Mon-

ster Mash and Paul Brewer the Magician Extraordinaire. This realm had a monster photo booth as well as a game called The Witch Pitch.

By this time in the event, it was off to Canyon Rim Park for new activities and food for realm three. At different times throughout the event, there were performance from a contortionist, Aly the Owl, as well as live comedy and music from Marcus & Guy. This stop was a chance to relax, rest, and grab some food from either Strippin Dippin Chicken or Umani Pizza.

The final realm was a celebration at Big Cottonwood Regional Park, where groups were encouraged to honk their horns, yell, and scream that the villains are gone. Realm four was a party with music, lights, bubbles and dancers. The event concluded with Time Warp Grand Finale Shows at designated times throughout the night.

At every turn of this event, there were smiling faces and laughter. Shari Humphrey, her daughters, Tara and Cami, and

her mother, Jan Asey, were dressed to win and were attending the event for the second year. The Humphrey’s have loved all the events from Venture Out! and try to take advantage of as many as possible, especially during this COVID time. Humphrey said, “I absolutely hope they continue to do this event. Even with the pandemic stuff and being away from each other, this event helped us to feel like we could be together without being together.”

Millcreek incorporated as a city in December 2016 and will be celebrating its fifth anniversary in February with several celebratory events. “These will be held at the new Millcreek Common Rink that is opening in January or February,” McConkie said. “The rink is outdoors and will offer ice skating and roller-skating. Then, Venture Out! Festivals will begin in June.”

Students take care of business at DeafTown USA

hey say Rome wasn’t built in a day.

DeafTown USA, on the other hand, was built in just one Friday morning. On Oct. 15, 55 students from Utah and Idaho entered the Discovery Gateway Junior Achievement Center to set up a thriving city complete with a mayor, citizens and over 20 local businesses.

As the students operated DeafTown USA, they learned about financial literacy, business operations and independent living. All communication was done through American Sign Language, the native language for the students in attendance.

The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind collaborated with Junior Achievement of Utah to bring DeafTown USA to life. Junior Achievement City has locations all over the country where students experience being a part of a community and participate in a simulated local economy. Utah’s Junior Achievement City is located at the Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum in downtown Salt Lake City. The 10,000-square-foot space teaches students about the collaboration, critical thinking and creativity it takes to be a part of a strong community.

Throughout the day at DeafTown USA, each student took on a different role as a citizen in the community. The students operate banks, manage budgets and vote for a mayor. At the end of the day, the elected mayor announced the citizens of the day, handed out other awards and invited various community members to the stage to address the audience.

Jackson Fowler played the role of Rocky Mountain Power CEO. He explained the business initiatives he worked on with his company at DeafTown USA.

He led his company in encouraging other businesses in the town to achieve energy efficiency and improve their environmental sustainability.

He said, “We’re trying to go green, so we want our businesses to be 100% green.

We weren’t able to fully meet those standards, but all of the citizens worked really hard in helping our environment. I’m happy about reaching 47.2% efficiency.”

Later, Braden, the CEO of DeafTown USA’s United Way, also addressed the audience. He led his company in raising money to help the community. He described the success they had in his address. He said, “We want to be part of the change in this community. We want to work together and come up with new ideas. I’m happy to report that together we raised $25.50 for United Way. We also had many citizens stop by and volunteer their time.”

The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) leads the nation for high school completion for deaf students. The school prides itself on its personalized approach to education. The school focuses on teaching students about self-advocacy through innovative methods. Utah is also the only state where graduation rates for deaf and hard of hearing students are higher than for hearing students.

The education deaf students receive in Utah may be the reason for the major success the students had in running DeafTown USA. Students successfully led businesses like RC Willey, Maverick, Zions Bank and Larry H. Miller in the simulated economy experience. These students showed their ability to problem solve and expertly manage real-life situations. l

Skyline football begins renaissance with new stadium

T

he Rock remains one of the premiere traveling trophies among high school football rivals in Utah. Both Olympus and Skyline teams have gone back and forth, but the Olympus Titans kept the rock on their side with a 27-7 victory at the newly completed Roger Dupaix Field Oct. 15 at Skyline.

“I think it’s a neat experience for kids to compete against their neighbors,” Skyline head football coach John Rowbotham said. “The kids from both schools are friends because the borders are separated by streets in some areas. It’s nice to compete for this item that means so much for tradition for high school football.”

While the competition on the field is fierce, there is no love lost between these teams. Outside of one night a year, there are plenty of positive things to say about each other.

“I like that our rival is a really good school,” Rowbotham said. “They are an extremely talented team. We have to play up to their ability. They are really good because it’s balanced. We try to get better each year. The only negative is we put too much pressure on the fact that it’s a rivalry game. You still need to play football just like every other game.”

It has been a successful season for Skyline as they finished in a three-way tie for second place in Region 6. Brighton ran away with the title while Skyline, Olympus and Park City were right behind.

“It’s been a great season in the sense that our coaches have done a great job preparing kids and put time and effort into preparation,” Rowbotham said. “Like any team, you lose some and win some. Our coaches handle losing very well. They help kids understand what we need to do to be successful.”

While it was a disappointing ending for the Class of 2022 on Senior Night, there is no time to hang their heads with the state playoffs right around the corner.

“We have a great group of seniors,” senior leader James Kerr said. “We have a positive team culture. That’s tough with a first year head coach. They’ve done an amazing job at mentoring the younger kids.

The younger kids have stepped up and played amazing football.”

This hasn’t always been the easiest season as the Eagles had some losses out of the gate. They had to band together to get on the winning track.

“Over the course of this season, we have faced adversity in every game we’ve played in,” Kerr said. “There have been games where the special teams wins, the defense comes up clutch or the offense bails us out.”

pus, the Eagles still had a great season in their new stadium.

Skyline is in the middle of a phased rebuild which started in 2020 and is scheduled to last through 2026. When the football season ended last November, work started immediately on the stadium. It was done in time for the field to be used this fall.

“On Aug. 19 we celebrated the com-

The field was named after retired Skyline head coach Roger Dupaix. Dupaix coached at Skyline from 1986-2011, and is recognized as one of the “winningest”

coaches in Utah high school history.

The fan support at Skyline has been an important factor this season. They have enjoyed a true home field advantage with fans back in their stadium and opposing ones as well.

“When we are home, we have great fans in The Nest (name for the fans cheering on the Eagles),” Kerr said. “I can’t speak

enough about our culture. Our student involvement and backing from the school is great. We have hundreds of fans at every game.

They follow us wherever we go. It doesn’t matter when or where we play. Regardless of the score, the fans and parents show up. It’s unlike anywhere else. Being at home is something I love since I’m playing in front of our fans.”

Now, the goals turn toward the postseason as the Eagles are getting ready to face the Park City team they faced just a couple weeks ago. The Miners had a bye last week, so the close loss to Skyline is still the freshest game in their minds.

“We just have to take it one day at a time and we will see,” Rowbotham said. “I think our coaching staff and players and community are excited. Lady Eagles focus on one point at a time

T

he Skyline High Lady Eagles were able to extend their record to 23-2 and have clinched the outright region title in volleyball. Their only losses throughout the season were to Copper Hills and Sky View (Idaho).

The Eagles won their senior night game on Oct. 14. That win over Park City was a memorable one for the girls who have dedicated much time to the sport.

They will conclude their regular season against Murray and then get ready for the state tournament, which will take place in

a couple weeks.

“We have a setter named Mia Liddiard who is headed to the University of Northern Colorado,” coach Mondo Begay said.

“Olivia Gloeckner is also going to Idaho University in Moscow. Bree Schriever is our outside hitter who is getting offers.”

“Our biggest obstacle is figuring out who gets to play,” Begay said. “We are competing every day in the gym because we are deep. We are finding out who’s going to compete. Depth is our biggest obstacle. They all want to play but they have to

compete to earn it. There may be hurt feelings cause people want to play. They know they have to come to practice and work. It’s an obstacle but a blessing. We have 14 girls that can be on the court at any time. Our roster has 10 seniors, four juniors, three sophomores and one freshman.”

Despite the competitive nature of the team, they remain close knit in their goal to win a state title, an honor that they have come close to in the past.

“Our girls are good friends but have to compete against each other,” Begay said.

“There are no hard feelings. I tell them to get in and work and the best kids will play.

I’m in my fifth year and we are trying to establish a culture. We only practice twice a week and then play two matches. We tell them to work on the fifth day on their own.”

What does the team do on Fridays with no practice? How has this unique approached helped the team be so successful?

“We tell them to go be kids,” Begay said. “We want them to enjoy their high school years because they go fast. They get Friday off to be kids and go to the football game. This is so rewarding for them and me.”

There is still work involved, and the coaching staff works as a cohesive unit to prepare to put out a great product on match day.

“There is a lot of planning that goes into it,” Begay said. “Our assistant coach Chris is a stat man. It’s awesome to have a coach that can show that numbers run and not emotion. We play a numbers game. It’s amazing to have a great assistant coach.

Krista is our ‘mom coach’ who works with

girls and is their calming factor. We have a good coaches culture and it is just good.

Culture is huge.”

This new philosophy that highlights more rest has helped the girls actually enjoy practice.

“Sometimes we forget as coaches that kids like to be with their friends,” Begay said. “Let’s work together. Kids love to come to the gym and they love practice now. When I was in high school we used to hate practice.”

While practice makes perfect, some rest time has helped the Eagles be as close to perfect as possible. While it may seem contrary to popular belief, this coaching staff has proved doubters wrong as they approach the state meet.

“It will be exciting to find out who we will match up with at state,” Begay said.

“We go one point at a time. We already won the region title. We can’t look past any team. We can’t look at all 25 points.

We just focus on one point at a time. That’s easier to process. Just win the next point.

So what if we lose one point? Focus on one point. This ball that’s coming to them right now is what they need to focus on.”

In addition to the coaches and parents, others have done their part to make this a successful experience for the team.

“It’s nice to have an administration that is really supportive of girls’ sports,’’ Begay said. “I’ve been here for five years and this administration has been amazing.

I’m really appreciative of the principal and athletic director and everyone in their support of our team.” l

Students bring energy to ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ at Olympus High

here was humor, horror and high emotion as the students of Olympus High brought their A-game to “Little Shop of Horrors” on opening night. This musical about an evil plant’s plot to take over the world, starting with one small florist shop, was led by student director Lizzie Brooks, a junior at Olympus High.

“Little Shop of Horrors” has been described as a sci-fi comedy rock musical. The story has something for everyone with its high-energy musical numbers, lovable characters and a quirky, villainous plant. It was the perfect show for the Halloween season, and it showcased the range and skill of Olympus High students.

On opening night, senior Hanna Nilson shone in the leading role of Audrey, with Taylor Roberts playing opposite her in the lead role of Seymour, the botanist. Being an acting veteran, Hanna looked entirely at home on the stage as Audrey. Little Shop of Horrors was Hanna’s fifth show at Olympus High, but her 10th show overall.

Hanna’s performance brought the role of Audrey to life, making the character feel sincere, emotional and complex. Together, Taylor and Hanna brought an endearing and genuine quality to Audrey and Seymour’s connection.

Zach Tragakis played Mr. Mushnik, the grumpy owner of the floral shop that quickly transforms into a “little shop of horrors” as their dangerous new plant grows larger...and hungrier for human blood.

Zach discussed playing the role of Mushnik. He said, “It was really fun to really get into the character and just experience that new perspective. And it was really fun to

get eaten by the plant. It was a really great role.”

A performance like “Little Shop of Horrors” can only come together when supported by a solid crew.

Olympus High’s technical team and stage crew did not disappoint. The set design and lighting contributed to the fun energy and eeriness of the story.

One of the most memorable parts of the musical was Luke Allen’s delightfully chilling performance as Orin the evil, motorcycle-riding dentist. With his frequent cackling and high-energy physical acting, Luke sent shivers down the audience’s spines and showed his skill in bringing a villain to life.

Other standout performances included senior, Beyonca Davis’ role as the leading Ronette. Her vocal performance wowed the audience and brought a fantastic energy to the show. Each of the Ronette’s delighted the audience with their singing, dancing and humor.

Gwen Anderson and Kai Kupukaa similarly added to the high-quality nature of the show as they teamed up to bring the evil plant to life, Gwen as puppeteer and Kai as the voice of the plant. After Kai’s impressive voice acting, the plant’s cries of “feed me” won’t be soon forgotten. Gwen’s puppeteering skills made the plant’s movements, especially as it grew larger and larger, feel increasingly lifelike and ominous.

Each member of the cast brought such energy to their singing, dancing, and acting. The talent at Olympus High is admirable, and the community has much to look forward to from future performances. l

Comcast makes a $1 billion commitment to digital equity

C

omcast Corporation, the global media and technology company, connects people to moments that matter. In fact, over the last 10 years, Comcast has connected more than 160,000 people in Utah to low-cost, high-speed, in-home internet services.

Now, the company is doubling-down on its commitment to help low-income families in the state gain access to the internet.

“Utah is one of the most collaborative states we work with across the country when it comes to helping its citizens gain digital equity,” said J.D. Keller, senior vice president, Comcast Mountain West Region. “Leaders from the state, county and city are working together as we open more free WiFi Lift Zones, connect more families to the Internet at home, and increase speeds for businesses and families across the state.”

Comcast has pledged $1 billion to establish WiFi-connected safe spaces, or Lift Zones, in 35 community centers in Utah, and more than 1,000 zones across the country. These centers help students participate in online learning and will connect more than 8 million low-income people to the internet.

The COVID-19 crisis put low-income students at risk and Comcast’s Internet Essential Partnership Program is focused on creating digital equity, allowing students to continue their schooling, even when they can’t attend class. Just this year, Comcast estimates students across America will complete more than 25 million hours of remote learning lessons at the hundreds of Lift Zone locations that have already opened.

“We are delighted to work with such outstanding corporate partners, such as Comcast, as we connect more Utahns to the Internet,” said Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox. “Utah is regularly lauded for its innovative vision in numerous categories, and increasing our digital access helps everyone, including families, students and businesses.”

The Comcast investment includes laptop and computer donations, more than $100,000 in digital equity grants for local Utah nonprofit community organizations, and continued investment in the company’s landmark Internet Essentials program.

Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said Comcast is advancing the county’s effort in supporting economic prosperity throughout the Salt Lake Valley. The county is responsible for launching unique digital equity initiatives to connect its community.

“We have one of the most forward-thinking counties in the country and having such a robust partnership with leaders in government and community organizations means we can connect the pivot points quicker and more securely for all involved,” Wilson said. “We’re committed to digital equity. Our Salt Lake County libraries have more than 300 hotspots and 150 Chromebooks in circulation to assist residents with digital needs in their homes.”

As Salt Lake County collaborates with Comcast, the country’s largest internet provider, programs in the area will benefit from the partnership.

Comcast recently gifted Neighborhood House with 300 computers and laptops to help clients in its programs, and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Salt Lake was awarded a financial grant to support its mission to empower youth and guide them toward success.

“We are very grateful for this timely grant from Comcast,” said Amanda Ree Hughes, president and CEO of Boys and Girls Club of Greater Salt Lake. “Comcast is a 360-partner because they give more than just dollars for computers and programs. Their employees bring skills, experience and knowledge to create a whole solution in providing access and technology to help our kids succeed.”

Wasatch Jr. High student volunteers to improve local playground

any schools in Utah have large painted maps of the U.S. or Utah’s counties on their playgrounds. This past summer, Daniella Salguero was playing basketball with her dad at Mill Creek Elementary when she noticed that the maps there were looking worn and faded. Daniella, a sixth grader at Wasatch Jr. High, volunteered to repaint them.

“Daniella has asthma so during the pandemic she’s been learning from home.

Every day when her dad gets home, they get outside and go play basketball or something else at Mill Creek Elementary, which is close to where we live.

“After going there almost every day, she said the maps looked ‘sad,’ and heard the principal wanted to repaint them,” said Daniella’s mother Diana Salguero.

Daniella volunteered to take on the project. She enlisted the help of her family, including her mom, dad Erwin Salguero, and older sister and recent Olympus graduate Lucia Rodriguez. The project took three days, and the family worked through the summer heat and a rainstorm to get it done.

Having volunteers to repaint the maps was great news for Mill Creek principal Amber Clayton.

out to me and asked if their family could tackle the project together as a ‘welcome back’ gift for the Mill Creek students.

“If you’ve seen the before and after pictures, you know they did a great job. I have been so impressed by Daniella and her family,” Clayton said.

Daniella’s dad works in the painting industry and has connections with Sherwin-Williams. When he mentioned to an industry representative what his family was doing, they offered to donate paint for the project.

They started on a Friday morning and worked from nearly sun up until sun down all weekend long. They needed to prep the surface by power washing it to remove all the dirt and old paint flecks. Then, of course, it rained.

“We got soaked, but we had so much fun,” Diana said.

Next they worked on the borders and filled in the states.

The next thing they knew it was Saturday at 9 p.m., but they still weren’t done.

“It was a lot of work. We came back on Sunday because we wanted to get the whole thing done that weekend,” Diana said.

They chose bright, eye-catching colors, and at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday it was finished: two vibrant, large maps. Clayton loves the improvements to the playground.

“I’m so impressed by Daniella. It feels symbolic that her act of service was repainting a map of Utah and a map of the United States. I think we would all agree that we need more people who see a problem and then choose to act to make things better,” Clayton said.

Daniella’s principal John Anderson at Wasatch Jr. High said that her service is a great example to other students.

“It’s awesome to see a junior high-aged student step outside of themselves and serve and help others. Daniella Salguero is a great student and asset to Wasatch Jr. High. We’re so happy to have her as a part of our school,” Anderson said. l

Twelve area high school students named National Merit Scholar Semifinalists

welve Holladay area high school students have been named National Merit Scholar Semifinalists. The students, who attend Olympus, Skyline and Cottonwood High, made the list based on their high PSAT/ NMSQT test scores.

“It’s really an honor. Out of the 1.5 million students who were in the competition, only 16,000 are chosen to be semifinalists.

That’s less than 1%. So to have multiple students at one school who achieve that, it’s really incredible,” said Olympus parent Angela Doyle.

Doyle’s daughter Isabella Doyle is one of the finalists along with four other students from Olympus: Andrew Bennett, Abigail Linscott, Miles Fawson and Vinamra Tyagi.

Five students at Skyline are semifinalists: Andrew Blodgett, Christina Dong, Mingling Huang, Louis McCracken and Anna-

belle Soelberg.

Cottonwood has two semifinalists: Logan Luker and Alex Kellgreen.

Principals at the three schools are impressed—but not surprised—that their students achieved this honor.

“We are so proud of our two National Merit Scholar Semifinalists. Both Alex Kellgreen and Logan Luker have not only excelled in academics, but they have excelled in the performing arts. They are both madrigals. Logan has also participated in jazz band, symphonic band, concert choir and theater,” said Cottonwood principal Terri Roylance.

“Additionally, Alex and Logan have taken the math/physics block classes. This is a rare combination in high school due to the rigor required for this class, which is taught every day.

“We’ve got incredible students that have worked so hard to accomplish so many things while they’ve been in high school. We couldn’t be more impressed by these students, and can’t wait to see what they accomplish in the future. It just blows me away to see what these kids are able to do,” Christensen said.

Skyline’s semifinalists are also a remarkable group. Principal Mitch Nerdin said all the semifinalists, like so many students at the school, follow the RISE initiative. RISE is an acronym and mantra for the school and stands for Resilience, Integrity, Support and Excellence.

“Skyline students are amazing. These particular students, our five semifinalists, know how to ‘RISE.’ It is so wonderful to see them excel and showcase their efforts and skills,” Nerdin said. l

Olympus principal Jen Christensen is also impressed by the semifinalists from her school.

“All five of them are doing amazing things. Isabella Doyle takes classes at the University of Utah, and has excelled in robotics and other programs. Vin Tyagi is very involved with DECA and is a student ambassador at the Granite Technical Institute.

“Three of our five semifinalists are also Olympus Sterling Scholars. Andrew Bennett is the Sterling Scholar for science, Abigail Linscott is the mathematics Sterling Scholar and Miles Fawson is the instrumental music Sterling Scholar,” Christensen said.

Fawson, who is training to be a concert pianist, has played twice at Carnegie Hall.

Riders of all abilities race in high school cycling league

E

levate is the program in the Utah High School Cycling League for special needs students. In its eight years of existence, they have helped several student athletes participate just like every other rider in the program.

“We wanted to bring more inclusivity into this league,” league director Dallen Atack said. “We wanted to make it available to special needs athletes.”

This season the league has had about a dozen special needs student athletes participate. They are each members of individual teams across the state. They include riders that are legally blind, deaf, autistic or missing limbs.

These riders participate just like the rest of the members of the team. In some cases, they may race a small loop near the start finish line, but other kids race a normal lap, and spectators would never know the difference.

“It is based on the capacity of the team.

If they have the ability to work with these kids we can get them to practice and the races,” Atack said.

Each participant can be individually supervised as needed.

“We had an athlete that was deaf and rode a little slower so we had a parent ride behind her so that the oncoming racers knew to steer around her,” Atack said. “Another was

legally blind. A coach rode in front of him to keep him safe. He could not see in front of him very well, but he was fast and usually had a small tumble during a race, but we made sure he stayed safe.”

The league provided training for its coaches with the National Ability Center in Park City. The NAC draws from decades of experience working with people of all abilities, using special equipment as necessary and techniques and teaching methods within its 1,900 volunteers.

“They helped us learn to work with the athletes and taught coaches skills for each individual athlete,” Atack said. “They have also helped acquire bikes with special equipment as needed.”

The league has 6,300 participants this season. They raced in four regions across the state and are scheduled to hold the state finals Oct. 28-29 in St. George.

“Our league grew more than we expected this season. In some of our race venues we are bursting at the seams. We also had a tough weather year with several lightning delays and rain. We will be headed to St. George for the finals with approximately 2,100 riders who have qualified,” Atack said.

The league culture is different than most people have experienced.

“Mountain bike culture is different than a lot of the other sporting cultures. Everyone helps each other. They are racing for a team, but also for themselves. The only way to get better is for you to get better. Everyone races, no one rides the bench,” Atack said.

The riders race in divisions of skill and

must pass levels of ability to advance.

“These Elevate riders are part of the team. It is a really neat program. We have had lots of fun with it,” Atack said.

The league begins its season in July. Its teams practice two or three times a week and welcome riders of all abilities.l

Local runner explores city street by street

ryant Heath has worked hard to find new motivation during the past year and a half of Covid-19 isolation. He has created a following on Instagram by sharing his adventure of running all the city streets of Salt Lake cities.

Heath got the idea to start running all the streets from looking at Google Maps one night and noticing how little of Salt Lake City he had actually been to.

“Yes, I’ve driven most of the major roads—but all the side and residential streets were left mostly unexplored by me.

Although I’ve lived in Salt Lake City for about a decade, I had only been to about 25% of the city which sounded crazy. So, I started estimating how many miles it would take to run all the streets and figured it would be about 100 miles a month or 25 miles a week, which is about the same number of miles I was averaging at the time. So, I made it my New Year’s resolution to try to do it all in the 2020 calendar year. My first run was on Jan. 2 around Sugar House Park and, despite all the curveballs last year threw, I still managed to finish on Dec. 13 on a route over by the Salt Lake airport,” he said.

Heath didn’t start running until he was 18 and he started college in 2003. He wasn’t athletic growing up and noticed that during his freshman year he was becoming sedentary. He wanted to change from a couch potato to a more active person. He started to go for runs as a starting point, but ended up liking running so much, that he never bothered to try out any other sport.

Heath has been able to stick with running over the years but has changed what the goals are for his running. When he first started running, he was more concerned with his times, getting enough miles in, and building up to run races going from running 5k races to ultramarathons. As he has gotten older and recently had two young children, Heath is taking a more relaxed approach by going for a run anytime he has free time and runs at whatever pace feels comfortable.

When asked what was the longest run he’s ever done, Heath said, “I did the Antelope Island 50-mile race a few years ago where you, basically, run all the trails on the island. It was a fun experience as I had not really explored Antelope Island much before then. The race had it all: great views of the mountains, enjoyable terrain, and a few buffalo sightings along the way.”

Heath has found joy in road and trail running. “I go back and forth on all the time.

Trail running is nice as it doesn’t take much effort to reach spots where there are few people around and it’s just you out there enjoying nature. With road running, it is a little more active as you are constantly on watch for vehicles and your own safety; however, you get to see a variety of interesting aspects that can only be found in the city.”

With 2020’s goal of running all the cities of Salt Lake City, what does that look like, how many miles has he run and what is the plan to continue? “I’ve ran the neighboring suburbs of Millcreek and South Salt Lake and am currently finishing up Holladay at the moment. I’ve been having such a fun time exploring different areas with all my running that I decided to kickstart a similar project a few months ago where I am running the entirety of a town in each of Utah’s 29 counties.

So, I’ve ran cities such as Fairview (Sanpete County), Wallsburg (Wasatch County), Goshen (Utah County), and Snowville (Box Elder County) as well. And with every run I always find something interesting and unique,” he said.

Heath’s biggest accomplishment was finishing out the 1,000 miles of Salt Lake streets late last year. “My last run was a few days after a snowstorm and I was running some streets by the Salt Lake City Airport, alongside the Airport Trail. When I finished up, I had my family, some friends and, much to my surprise, a film crew from a local news station capturing it all. It felt good finishing but it felt even better having people I care about there to see it,” he said.

Heath plans to continue exploring more places on foot. “If anything, this project has taught me it’s that there are amazing things in every neighborhood,” he said.

For those feeling inspired to start running, Heath has some advice: “Running is a great activity to show the power of incremental progress. Nobody just wakes up on day one and casually runs a marathon or, in my case, runs all the streets in the city. It’s something that you build up day by day and mile by mile. So early on, take it slow and don’t run too much and gradually build yourself up. When you are starting out, the most important part is not necessarily how fast or how far you go but how consistently you stick to running. Like anything in life, if you have the dedication and put in the effort you will eventually be able to accomplish amazing things.”

ne cool November morning, mom twisted my blonde hair into two braids and painted my face with orange and blue stripes.

I put on a fringed vest made from a paper grocery bag (decorated with stick figures and animals), donned my construction paper headband with its fake feathers and walked uphill (both ways) in the snow to school.

Along the way, I met up with friends dressed as Indians or outfitted in Pilgrim attire, with black, buckled hats or kitchen aprons. We were heading to our second-grade class party, unaware we were perpetuating a myth handed down for generations regarding the First Thanksgiving.

We’d been taught the feast was a celebration of friendship, that the Indians didn’t want their BFFs to starve during the winter.

We didn’t know Pilgrims were the guests that never leave, who end up stealing your bath towels and giving you smallpox.

We also didn’t know ancestors of the Wampanoag Nation hadn’t been invited to the feast, but responded when they heard Pilgrims firing guns, and thought the settlers were under attack. But the Pilgrims were just shooting their rifles into the air, celebrating a successful harvest, like ya do. Have Americans always been gun lunatics?

forms of sugar, because that was one of the main food groups in the ’70s. Our meal was nothing like the first Thanksgiving where lobster or eel was probably the main course, not turkey. I don’t know how they stuffed an eel, but I’m sure it wasn’t pretty.

The teacher told us to write down things we were grateful for. My list included my family, Nancy Drew mysteries and apple pie.

We also brought offerings for a food drive where some lucky family in the neighborhood received 25 cans of cranberry sauce, four boxes of Stove Top stuffing and a case of olives.

Maybe the Pilgrims also made gratitude lists, including finding a land so completely devoid of other humans that they could take whatever they wanted and build a country.

Did they think the people native to this continent were just visiting? Lost?

ed in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln was so tired of the Civil War, he just wanted a piece of pumpkin pie. Since then, in typical American style, the holiday evolved into a food orgy, consisting of overcooked turkey, mountains of mashed potatoes and nine different Jell-O salads. My food tracking app usually starts to smoke during dessert.

Although it’s true Pilgrims celebrated days of thanksgiving, those observations usually involved fasting and prayer, not gluttony.

These “thanksgivings” often occurred after a massacre of Native people. For instance, in 1637, Massachusetts Colony Governor John Winthrop called for a day of thanksgiving after hundreds of the Pequot tribe were massacred.

Not really something you celebrate with grandma’s homemade rolls and jam.

Along with your holiday celebration, maybe you can learn about the challenges still faced by Native Americans including poverty, domestic violence, healthcare and the continuation of harmful stereotypes.

As a 7-year-old, I didn’t know cultural prejudice or appropriation was a thing. I didn’t realize the Disneyfied version of the first Thanksgiving wasn’t accurate, with its cartoonish Pilgrims, smiling Natives and bouncy soundtrack. But now I do. When you gain wisdom, you get to make better choices.
