A

t the Sept. 26 Millcreek City Council meeting, councilmembers voted unanimously to amend the town’s moderate income housing plan. This motion included adding several new amendments to the city’s existing Moderate Income Housing (MIH) plan, which is tailored toward residents who earn less than 80% of the area median income.

During the last legislative session, the Utah State Legislature passed a bill requiring cities to select a minimum of four strategies to expand access to moderate income housing. As an enforcement mechanism to ensure towns do this, the state “has indicated that state funding for various things such as the TIF, the transportation and improvement fund, will be tied to the progress cities make on affordable housing,” Mayor Jeff Silvestrini said. Accordingly, the more MIH strategies a town implements, the more priority that municipality will get for state funding. Conversely, if a town fails to adopt enough MIH strategies, they will not get priority funding and may not receive any at all.

Flooding and a fire plague Skyline High at the start of the academic year

A

fter months of record-breaking heat and drought warnings, the prospect of a heavy September rainfall should have served as a moment of relief for Millcreek residents. Unfortunately, for Skyline High School, the rainstorm proved catastrophic when multiple classrooms and hallways were impacted by flooding. The source of the leak? The school’s roof. Which according to school officials has long needed repairs.

Ben Horsley, a spokesman for Granite School District, said the flooding affected a handful of classrooms, including hallways, that ultimately prompted an early release for students.

On the afternoon of Sept. 14, Granite School District took to its numerous social media pages to alert students and families to the ongoing flooding issue that had turned serious, prompting the early release of students.

“Due to intense rainfall, we had to release several of our classrooms around 2 p.m. today to ensure student safety as it relates to what has become a regular occurrence with our leaking and aging roof,” the alert made by Skyline’s principal Mitch Nerdin read. He also took to social media to update students and families as the situation unfolded into the afternoon and evening.

“We have also had some flooding in our auditorium area which has caused play practice and an additional activity to be canceled for the day. Crews are already working to resolve both of these issues.

All other activities and extracurriculars can proceed as scheduled. We regret any inconvenience and anticipate these issues will be resolved in time for the start of school tomorrow.”

for quick repair initiatives, footage, and pictures uploaded to social media showed the severity of the flooding. Perhaps the most harrowing images came from the auditorium, where a cascading waterfall ran from stage to floor.

Fortunately, there were no injuries to report, and for the most part, school and extracurriculars were hardly impacted.

Following the early release of students on Sept. 14, repair crews descended on Skyline to halt the hemorrhaging water and enact emergency repairs.

Skyline was originally built in 1962, although in May of 2019, Granite School District announced a site layout for a complete school rebuild. The district said the site would break ground in November 2019, aiming to be fully functional and ready to house students by the end of December 2025. Due to the unforeseen challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, there will likely be further delays, and even without these delays, 2025 is still a handful of years away. Fortunately, major builds are consistently underway, with the revealing of the new gymnasium and pool occurring on Sept. 20.

Despite the new build’s progression, cracks in the current school’s infrastructure are hard to ignore. In fact, not even two weeks post flooding, a fire reportedly broke out in Skyline’s gymnasium. At the time of release, officials had yet to make a ruling on the cause of the fire. Fortunately, it was quickly contained, and no injuries were reported.

A Unified Fire Authority spokesperson stated, “We arrived at the building and found smoke inside of the gym. Some flames had already made it outside of the building. We were able to quickly diffuse the situation.” The crew estimated the fire

was sparked right around 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 22.

Both these incidents will require some significant repair investments due to damage. The fires were extinguished before any injuries could occur but there was damage due to the burning of tar and insulation.

In spite of setbacks Skyline unveils new pool and gymnasium facilities

kyline High School was finally able to provide students, families, alumni and faculty with some good news following a month of hardships. The school, which is currently undergoing a complete rebuild, has officially completed several of its new facilities. The unveiling of these new amenities is two years in the making, as the rebuild officially broke ground in November 2019.

The Skyline community unveiled the newly rebuilt gymnasium and pool on Sept. 20.

So far, the new build boasts an entire athletic facility featuring a main gymnasium, pool and practice field space. While the rebuild will extend well into the next four years, students will now be able to take advantage of the new athletic facilities.

The celebration provided a much-needed distraction, following several weeks of challenges. On Sept. 14, flooding wreaked havoc on Skyline flooding the auditorium, hallways and multiple classrooms. The damages were quickly attended to, and no injuries were reported. Unfortunately, a mere two days after the school unveiled these new facilities, the old gymnasium erupted into flames.

A Unified Fire Authority representative explained, “We dispatched to the school at 10:30 p.m. (on Sept. 20). The flames had engulfed the insides and were starting to form outside. We quickly extinguished the fire but there were some lasting effects due to the burning of tar and insulation.”

At the time of publication, the fire department has yet to discover the cause of the fire, however, an investigation is still ongoing.

Structurally, there have been lots of challenges with the current Skyline High School building which was originally erected in 1962. Following the flooding, principal Mitch Nerdin emphasized the need for a new building. “The flood is indicative of an ongoing issue, and what has become a regular occurrence with our leaking and aging roof,” he explained in a statement made to students, faculty and alumni via social media.

Despite Nerdin’s acknowledgment of Skyline’s ailing infrastructure, the plans for a new school have been on the books for several years.

“The Skyline rebuild was made possible by the 2017 voter-approved Granite Bond, which put in motion a major strategic plan to rebuild, renovate and revitalize aging schools in Granite School District,” Ben Horsley, the chief of staff of Granite School District, said.

Skyline is just one of many schools in the district that are currently undergoing major renovations and rebuilds. The process, which is being largely documented online, shows major progression for schools districtwide, many of which, have received little to no major renovations since their initial

builds.

Originally when plans for the Skyline rebuild were unveiled, the timeline in place had completion marked for December 2025.

However, the completion date has since been postponed as the rebuild broke ground in November 2019 just months before the Covid-19 pandemic would sweep the nation and cause delays.

As of now, the stadium, east site, baseball fields, and brand new athletics building are fully functional. In the next coming years, a central site, a west site, an academics building, a performing arts building, and several other sports facilities will be unveiled. However, contrary to the December 2025 end date, the complete rebuild is set to be fully actualized following the unveiling of the last portion, the central site, in December 2026.

To celebrate the opening of the new gym and pool, the school held a ribbon-cutting event facilitated by student leaders.

Present were the school’s band, cheerleaders, student-athletes, and faculty to rein in a new era of athletics. Following the ribbon cutting, members of the community including the media were welcome to tour the facilities and participate in all the events including the evening’s Lady Eagle varsity volleyball game.

While the festivities certainly helped to build morale, it wasn’t without criticisms or concerns from parents, families, and students who question why the athletic facilities

were given priority over academic housing.

Especially when those in the administration, like Nerdin, have attested to the ongoing challenges faced when a structure becomes outdated. Many concerned parents pointed out on social media that the school still has years to go before its construction will be complete, and that’s hoping there aren’t any

other delays.

As for now, the plans for rebuilding Skyline will go on in their pre-determined order, with a reminder from the district that “the safety of our students is always our top priority” and that progress is being made every day. l

Steering committee helps to guide the look of Millcreek by reviewing, updating codes

illcreek has contracted with the firm Logan Simpson to assist with the overhauling of building codes for the city. Logan Simpson is a firm that works in many areas which include community planning and landscape architecture. Joe Moss, planner at Logan Simpson, put together the steering committee and stated that, “The steering committee is an important component of the code process. We use it as a sounding board for what the larger community would like to see.”

The steering committee is made up of residents, stakeholders, local developers, members of the community councils, representatives from the planning commission and a team of Logan Simpson associates. “The broad mix is intended to make sure the new code is improved for all users, making a code that is easier to both administer and use,” Moss said.

Not all members of the steering committee are well versed in the zoning and subdivision codes, but they all have different levels of interest in the community.

Millcreek was incorporated in 2016.

by Millcreek were from Salt Lake County.

Many of these codes need modernizing to help Millcreek reach the goals of the general plan adopted in 2019. The project was named, The Millcreek Together Code Update.

Most of Millcreek is built out so new development is primarily infill development.

These projects will require more ingenuity than traditional sites. Many community members identified the need for additional flexibility in the code in order to best fulfill the new city’s vision.

Moss stated that by bringing “questions and decisions before the committee throughout the process” this gives the group an op-

portunity to be “ambassadors of the project for the rest of the community.”

John M. Janson of Planning Solutions and a consultant on this project said, “The guidance from a diverse group of interested citizens, developers and elected and appointed officials is important to this process. The intent is to update some very old ordinances that we inherited from the county. If you have not updated your ordinances after going through a general plan process, then nothing really changes.”

The project is taking several steps in this process which includes listening to the community and understanding what the people feel works and is not working with the current code. One goal is to make the code user friendly and to write it in a language that is easily defined. Suggestions are taken into consideration for the new code that reflects Millcreek’s future vision.

Interviews with Millcreek residents were held and a consistent theme that was important to many was health and the environment. Protecting wildlife habitats, developing walking trails to reduce car dependency and creating more open green space for recreation were common themes.

Access to community amenities and well-planned and aesthetically pleasing gathering places were also reoccurring themes.

This past July, the steering committee toured 16 sites in Millcreek that included mixed-use buildings, attached single-family residences, multifamily units, commercial spaces and the new Millcreek Common. This three-hour tour was used to evaluate and understand code concerns for existing structures that were built in recent years and recently approved projects under construction.

vided helpful feedback.

Questions and concerns were raised by the steering committee members that were present. Some comments heard on the tour were: “These apartments look like storage units” and “These townhouse units need a better storm runoff retention ditch” and even a few “What were they thinking” questions in regard to underground parking for residents.

There were many approving comments on newly constructed multifamily units that had larger windows, decks, well-developed green space and had parking areas that made sense.

The second part of the process is to review the existing code and look for inconsistencies, make sure they are state law compliant, look for areas of improvement, and to identify how future goals fit into the current

code.

Along with the steering committee, public outreach methods have included social media, newsletters, interviews with stakeholders, online questionnaires and a website.

“We currently have a survey up on the project website and will continue to reach out to the public at each step of the drafting and adoption process,” Moss said. Finally a draft will be reviewed by the steering committee, planning committee, city council and the public. The final ordinances and adoption of the codes are projected to be completed by the summer of 2023. l

city was already doing enough for affordable housing.

The next three strategies proposed and adopted by the council are eliminating parking requirements in areas where residents may have restricted access to cars, developing a Station Area Plan, and incentivizing MIH in new housing developments by using zoning ordinances. The strategy related to parking requirements is geared toward areas near major transportation hubs or senior living facilities where residents may rely on transit methods other than cars. The Station Area Plan refers to areas within one halfmile of public transit stations. The Millcreek Community Council also opposed rezoning to incentivize MIH in new developments,

again citing Millcreek’s previous efforts to zone for affordable housing.

The final strategies before the council are working with a partner to apply for funding or tax incentives to promote the construction of MIH, reducing or eliminating fees associated with the construction of MIH, and amending land use regulations to allow for affordable housing near commercial corridors of Millcreek. Both the Mt. Olympus Community Council and East Millcreek Community Council expressed misgivings about waiving development fees for MIH. They feared that waiving or reducing such fees could hurt the tax base and create perverse incentives for developers. The council assured residents that these strate-

gies were designed to make developments more affordable, not make developers richer.

After agreeing on slight changes to the language of some strategies to allow for more flexibility, each councilmember voted to adopt the amendments to the Moderate Income Housing plan. The plan outlines fiveyear goals for the city’s promotion of affordable housing, with annual reports that track progress on implementation and goals. Silvestrini noted the importance of affordable housing now that Utah is the fastest growing state in the country, and said that “Millcreek is a leader in affordable housing,” and would remain as such. l

without being responsible for meeting a specific target or timeline.

The first three of the proposed strategies include rezoning for densities that allow for MIH, encouraging the building of and reducing regulations for row houses and cottage homes, and rezoning for MIH in commercial and mixed-use areas. The second strategy was amended from language that focused on Accessory Dwelling Units after hearing feedback from the Mt. Olympus Community Council and the Planning Commission that expressed concerns about ADUs. The Millcreek Community Council opposed the first two strategies as members felt that the

Millcreek matches grant for solar panels on city hall

t the Oct. 10 Millcreek City Council meeting, councilmembers voted to accept funding from Rocky Mountain Power that requires a 22.7% match from the city’s general fund. The funding comes from Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program, which partners with residents, businesses and municipalities “to support renewable energy and environmental stewardship in their communities and throughout the West,” according to the program website.

The agreement will function essentially as a grant to provide solar panels for the roof of the new Millcreek City Hall upon its construction. The Blue Sky grant is for $465,000 and requires a 22.7% match amounting to about $105,000 from the city of Millcreek.

Mayor Jeff Silvestrini described the grant as “a really convenient way to be environmentally sustainable” and reduce electricity costs at the new city hall.

Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky Program began in 2000 and allows customers to select the amount of renewable energy they want to support by paying extra on their monthly bill. These monthly contributions start at $1.95 and go toward the purchase of renewable energy credits or funding for community based renewable energy projects. The Blue Sky Program has over

135,000 participants across three states, including 50,000 participants in Utah.

The grant and subsequent match will be “a vehicle by which we put solar panels on city hall at basically…23% of the cost,” Silvestrini explained, resulting in significant savings for the taxpayer. Councilman Thom DeSirant asked the mayor if this grant would cover the cost of a battery to store power, as well. The mayor confirmed that it did, and that the battery will store any power generated by the panels in excess of the city’s needs.

The acceptance of this funding is the latest in a series of efforts by the Millcreek City Council to make the new city hall building environmentally conscious, including installing electric vehicle charging stations and supporting a sustainable design for the building. l

Skyline High still winners in unified soccer

W

hile Skyline High may not have won the state unified soccer title, they are still winners in the sport.

After playing in a regional tournament, the team competed in the state playoffs Sept.

30 alongside more than 30 high school unified soccer teams in the area. The team fell short of qualifying to play in the state championship game.

Unified soccer, a program of Special Olympics Utah in partnership with the Utah High School Activities Association, allows student-athletes with and without disabilities to play on the same team.

While the teams are coed and play competitively five versus five on a smaller sized soccer field, the focus is on development of skills, friendship, understanding and sportsmanship as often players on either team will cheer for one another.

Other area high school teams that competed in the soccer championships or playoffs include Alta, Brighton, Jordan, Hillcrest, Hunter, Murray and Riverton. l

Olympus Titans win state championship for girls tennis

lympus continued their dominance at the state level by winning the 5A UHSAA Girls State Championship at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City Oct. 1. While they didn’t win at every spot, the depth of their team across singles and doubles is what really led to a team victory.

“Sophie Dowdell didn’t like doubles at first because it wasn’t comfortable for her,” Olympus girls tennis coach Katie Zimmerman said. “Morgan Longson, Mimi Hoggan and Alexandra Rawlings gave us momentum in doubles and beating Woods Cross in those events knocked them out and helped us gain more points.”

Woods Cross had a couple of girls finish first in the top two singles positions. However, what counts in the team championship is the combined results of the top three singles spots as well as the two doubles teams.

“We have eight superstars and other teams have only one or two stars,” Zimmerman said.

“That’s what got us the win. We had all five positions make it to the semifinals and four made it to the finals. It was really fun that it was a full team win.”

While she didn’t take home the gold, Elisabeth Carter gained some critical points for the Titans by advancing to the championship round for the second singles position after

coming off an injury after her sophomore season last year.

“I think I did good,” Carter said. “Going into the state tournament, I was seeded No. 2 for my draw. In the first match against Lehi, I won most of the points. Against Springville in the second round, I won 6-0 and 6-1.”

Carter then entered a challenging semifinal match and learned some lessons in the process.

“The semifinal was a bit harder,” Carter said. “I played the girl seeded just below me.

She beat one teammate around my level before. I was thinking about that and went in a little more nervous. She was planning at an insane level. I won the first set 7-5. It was a hard setting to play in because so many people were watching. In the second set, I lost 3-6. In the third set, I was stressed because so many people were watching. People in my club were cheering for the other girl as well as coaches and parents. I went down 1-5, but came back and won the third set 7-5. I was being more aggressive trying to take the ball right off the bounce. I showed that I could come back after however much I was down. It was a three-hour 40-minute match. I lost in the finals to the No. 1 seed.”

Playing tennis at the level that Carter does requires practicing five to six days per week.

Some don’t even go to school full time at those spots because they are trying to make it on a college team.

“I really want to play in college,” Carter said. “After my year off due to injury, I’ve been trying to get my UTR rating up. I’ve loved tennis ever since I was young. It’s an outlet for me. Some people don’t like the sports they are pushed in. After school that’s really all I like to do. I like to progress and get better. It helps me a lot as a person with the mental aspect of tennis. It helps me work towards those goals I’ve had for a while.”

All of the varsity talent will be returning next year for Olympus. It has been quite the process for coach Zimmerman to become the leader of a championship program.

“I had an older daughter on the team,” Zimmerman said. “She was on the varsity team. I was an assistant coach for a few years and helped because they needed a new coach.

This is my second year as head coach. I have a daughter on a team now who is on junior varsity. Only seven people play varsity. I just want to be with her. I love tennis and started as an adult. I play in an adult league now.”

Even though it is the offseason, that doesn’t mean that tennis activities will cease for the Olympus Titans.

“We will do some fun stuff on the side,” Zimmerman said. “My daughter goes four times a week on her own. Our elite players will work with private coaches. We will focus on more team building. Doubles is where we will focus. We always struggle the most to fill those Continued on page 19

Salt Lake County Mayor and Council pass resolution opposing the gondola

A

fter the Utah Department of Transportation identified Gondola Alternative B as the best option to improve transportation in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson and the county council passed a joint resolution asking UDOT to remove the gondola from consideration.

The resolution suggested that UDOT adopt the Common-Sense Solutions Approach, stating it would be more fiscally responsible and help protect and preserve the canyon.

“Instead of constructing 23 skyscraper-sized gondola towers that will devastate the majestic views of the canyon, UDOT should pursue common-sense solutions that invest in more practical, adaptable, and less invasive transportation strategies,” Wilson said. “These solutions on their own have the potential to solve the traffic problem without destroying our canyon. This common-sense approach will demonstrate that the costly and unsightly gondola is not right for our canyons.”

Common-sense solutions include creating a toll for the canyon, providing electric buses with mobility hubs, adopting parking management strategies that would include parking reservations and a smartphone app, and adding incentives for carpooling and rideshare programs.

Environmental organizations and many city leaders in the county have come forward to oppose construction of the gondola, which has a $550-million price tag, just for initial construction costs. Concerns were raised that the gondola only stops at two private ski resorts, only removes about 30% of canyon traffic and involves constructing nearly two dozen gondola towers up Little Cottonwood Canyon, plus a

base-camp location at the mouth of the canyon.

“We are moving into a difficult time in our economy,” said Salt Lake County Council Chair Laurie Stringham. “As UDOT looks at building a gondola in Little Cottonwood Canyon, I would urge the State of Utah to look at all facets of this issue: water protection, fire safety, two ways in and out of the canyon in case of fire or avalanche, and other options available that solve more than just a narrow scope. It is easy for an entity with a narrow scope to come to a conclusion, but as public officials, we have a range of problems to solve and we need to look at solutions that solve those problems, not just a narrow scope.”

UDOT’s decision comes after a four-year Environmental Impact Study that started in the spring of 2018. The intent was to create transportation solutions to improve mobility and safety for visitors to Little Cottonwood Canyon and along Wasatch Boulevard. “Taxpayers shouldn’t foot the bill for a permanent and risky project like this, especially when we could invest in common-sense solutions like electric buses that can also be used to benefit transportation issues across Salt Lake Valley,” said Salt Lake County Council Member Jim Bradley.

After heated public comment and a debate between council members, the resolution narrowly passed with a 5-4 vote. Council members Dave Alvord, Aimee Winder Newton, Steve Debry and Dea Theodore voted against the resolution.

Managing Grief in the Holidays

By William G. Hoy Holidays in grief can be particularly challenging with familiar and sentimental sights, sounds, and smells reminding us our loved one is not here. Because this period of the year is built around relationships, a death in the family can make these weeks very difficult. But rather than attempt to just “grope our way” through these special days, there are ways to grow personally through the holidays as grief becomes transformative for us.

Saying goodbye to a loved one is anything but easy, especially if well-meaning friends and family members expect you to just “get on with your life.” Allow time and space for grieving and crying this holiday season. Keeping a journal can provide a vital opportunity for reflection during the holidays. These weeks will not be the same as before because of the “empty chair” at the table so the pain is inevitable.

A list of favorite holiday activities might be quite lengthy but make that list anyway. The list might include many holiday traditions such when the house is decorated, when and where worship takes place, and in whose home the family meals are shared. Though it is impossible to do everything “just like when Mom was here,” you can evaluate what you do for the holidays and determine, with your family’s help, which of those traditions you want to preserve.

In evaluating holiday traditions, consider creating something new. Lighting a special candle, purchasing a unique holiday decoration, providing gifts to a needy family, or hosting an international student can become meaningful holiday traditions.

Well-meaning friends or family may want you to attend parties and gatherings, hoping to “cheer you up” but take control of your schedule and do only as much celebrating as you feel ready to do. Choosing which events to participate in acknowledges that grief is a tiring experience. Even under the best of circumstances, holidays can be taxing so attempting to attend every event, party, or celebration may bring about total exhaustion. Instead, say “no” to some well-intentioned invitations.

Simply remind friends, “My energy level hasn’t returned to where it was before he died; thank you for understanding my need to decline.”

Pay close attention to physical well-being, too. Adequate rest, good nutrition, and moderate exercise is essential for the grief process. Lean meats with fresh fruits and vegetables are better choices than sugar- and fat-laden treats. If your health care provider approves, a brisk walk or other moderate exercise can help you feel better physically and emotionally. And eating a healthy diet coupled with moderate exercise is a remedy for insomnia for many mourners.

Be sure to consider the spiritual aspects of life, too. Because holidays have spiritual roots make sure to include time for worship and reflection during this period.

Volunteering to help others or making a memorial contribution is a meaningful way to put feet to faith during the holiday season.

While it is inevitable to face pain at the holidays, following these suggestions can help bereaved individuals and families find transformative growth during this special season of the year.

Wasatch Wanderers rescues abandoned exotic pets, ducks and geese

W

hen people think of animal rescue, they usually think about the thousands of abandoned dogs or cats waiting to be placed in forever homes. But Wasatch Wanderers rescue a different type of animal.

Although Adison Smith and co-founder Kade Tyler have been rescuing animals for more than 10 years, it wasn’t until last September that they created the nonprofit Wasatch Wanderers to help domestic waterfowl, farm animals and exotic pets.

“I’ve always been very passionate about helping animals because they don’t have a voice for themselves,” Smith said. “We just recognized there was a big need for farm and exotic animal rescue.”

Last fall, Smith was contacted by Weber State University to rescue more than 60 ducks and geese stranded on the school’s campus.

Water for the animals was drying up and the waterfowl were being attacked by dogs.

Geese had been at WSU for several years, but as the birds reproduced, and as people dropped off their pet geese and ducks on campus, the number of birds had increased, creating a problem at the school.

“For years, these geese had been seen as the Weber State unintentional mascot. They’d put the geese on shirts and hats and COVID masks,” Smith said. “I organized a rescue team and found homes for the geese.”

That’s when she decided to create Wasatch Wanderers, and during the last year, the organization has rescued more than 500 domestic waterfowl.

Smith said people don’t realize pet ducks and geese have been genetically altered with wings too small for their bodies. They get too fat to fly to safety. Because they can’t sustain flight, they don’t migrate and get stuck in ponds when the water freezes.

“They rely on humans to keep them alive. You’ll see a lot of dead waterfowl because they can't leave and they’ve become an easy target for predators,” Smith said. “People just don’t know they can’t fly or forage on their own.”

The goal of Wasatch Wanderers is to remove domestic waterfowls from places that aren’t safe and put them in forever homes.

But it’s not just geese and ducks rescued by the group, they also take in pigs, chickens, cows, hamsters, turtles and fish.

Smith is often contacted by shelters across the state who have a rooster, pig or duck that’s going to be euthanized. She takes those animals and gives them to one of the 50 foster homes willing to take in farm animals.

They recently saved a pig from a shelter near Vernal and rescued an additional four pigs from California. Wasatch Wanderers paid for a volunteer to transport the pigs to a foster home and got the animals medical care, including one pig that had eight babies after it was rescued.

It can get overwhelming when so many animals need a home. There are currently 85 roosters in the group’s care, more than 150 waterfowl, lots of guinea pigs and hamsters, and they’ve stopped accepting rabbits because they can’t afford the medical care for all the rabbits they receive.

Wasatch Wanderers also rescues abandoned turtles and goldfish. In the last year, the group has saved nearly 70 turtles that have been abandoned in waterways. Smith said people don’t know that goldfish and turtles are an invasive species and damaging to wildlife.

“These are living beings and they have needs and if you can’t meet those, don’t buy them,” Smith said. “Not only is it harmful and cruel to that animal to do that, it’s also illegal. It’s actually a crime in the state of Utah to abandon any domestic animal, even something as small as a goldfish.”

Currently, the organization is 100% foster-based, but Smith and Tyler hope to purchase property to create an animal sanctuary when land becomes more affordable. All the money for medical care, food and transportation comes out-of-pocket or through donations.

“There is a resource available to pet owners who are in over their head. Don’t abandon, reach out to a rescue,” Smith said.

“The biggest change we want to make is educating the public and preventing the problem at the source. Prevent those impulsive buys because that’s what so many do when they abandon their animal. Make more responsible decisions. That’s what adults are supposed to do.”l

Spring Lane and Twin Peaks school closures seem inevitable after district meetings

ranite District held community meetings Sept. 28 and 29. They discussed population studies in Holladay that point toward boundary changes and school closures. Elementary schools in Holladay all seem to fall short of optimal enrollment numbers.

“The ideal numbers when we’re looking at an elementary school are 550 students enrolled and three teachers per grade, that’s kind of the sweet spot,” said Granite spokesperson Ben Horsley in his introduction.

Horsley moderated the discussions along with Steve Hogan, director of planning and boundaries. Community members were invited to share concerns ahead of time on GSD’s website. They were also given time at the microphone to ask questions and participate in the public forum.

Horsley said the Population Analysis Committee has studied this area for a long time. “The PAC is made of 16-18 people who help analyze boundaries on an annual basis throughout a school calendar year.

These are our findings from the Van Winkle/700 East Corridor Study,” Horsley said.

The meetings had big turnouts and emotions ran high. Horsley and Hogan presented a slideshow to explain the data and

the options. But all three scenarios pointed to the same thing: close three elementary schools, two of which will be Spring Lane and Twin Peaks.

The third possible school closure options were Penn, Lincoln or Millcreek.

“We’ve studied enrollment numbers, students attending the school from out of boundaries, from outside the district, and for special programs like Dual Language Immersion,” Horsley said.

The PAC’s findings will be presented with a recommendation to the Board of Education, who will then vote on what to do.

Both meetings ran over two hours and were attended by community members, parents, teachers, administrators, students and lawmakers.

Rep. Carol Spackman Moss (House District 37) was in the audience and commented on how good it was to see so much community engagement. Spackman Moss taught at Olympus High for most of her career before running for office. Her daughter teaches at Skyline High.

“My reason for running for the legislature was for education. I care a lot about these issues,” she said. She questioned whether closures would lead to more students choosing charter schools.

Other people were concerned that the closures were short-sighted—the numbers reflect current demographics, but not future ones. There were questions about what happens if a school is needed in the future for a growing population, but had been closed.

Horsley and Hogan acknowledged several times throughout the meetings that they didn’t have a crystal ball. Horsley addressed the district’s desire to hold onto their properties, even if they aren’t in current use.

“I was on the board when we made the decision 14 years ago to sell off the Granite High School property. Looking back, I regret that decision. There’s an ebb and flow to these spaces and with a little patience we might have found something to do with it that worked for the community.

“We got $11 million for that property, but it’s worth far more now. And considering our annual operating budget and that a new elementary school is $35 million, that sale was just a drop in the bucket. We got a one-time boost, but now that property is

The feeling of community, the building itself that holds memories, and the traditions of a school would all be broken up by a closure.

Being too far to walk to school was also a concern. “Transportation has been part of the PAC discussion. Getting a bus route, setting up courtesy stops, and establishing safe walking routes have all been part of the conversation,” Hogan said.

April Flores, a parent and PTA member at Millcreek Elementary, was at both meetings. She introduced herself and read a prepared statement.

“I do not appreciate how often I hear Millcreek and closure in the same sentence over and over again,” Flores said.

Flores went on to praise Millcreek’s culture, diversity and new administrator Amber Clayton.

The schools are up for closure because the PAC’s findings show numbers are unevenly distributed at the schools. There are 3,300 elementary school students and nine schools within the boundaries they studied.

The average is 366 students per school, which falls nearly 200 students short of the district’s “sweet spot” of 550.

Closing three schools means that 3,300 students are distributed among six schools, which is an average of 550 per school.

Community members expressed over and over again they felt numbers were taking precedence over intangible experiences in these decisions. Hogan and Horsley said they were there to listen to these thoughts and experiences.

or too small. We want a minimum of three teachers per grade level. This is where we see the best educational outcomes,” Hogan said.

Of the schools discussed, Granite presented their enrollment as of May 2022 in their “Three options with busing summary:” Woodstock, 475; Oakwood, 350; Spring Lane, 280; Twin Peaks, 225; Moss, 475; Millcreek, 340; Lincoln, 400; Walker, 420; Wilson, 300; and Penn, 550.

Though all the options point to inevitable closures, parent Bella Johnson argued that people are overlooking the strengths of a small school.

“There is something to be said about the camaraderie and community in a small school that you can’t touch in big schools.

I would venture to say it’s hard to bond and hard to create that community network,” Johnson said.

Johnson also addressed the issue of socioeconomic differences between schools. She said as a person of color, she has noticed people have a different attitude toward a school that is seen as older, poorer or more ethnically diverse.

“Everyone wants to send their kids to the ‘nicer schools,’” Johnson said, hinting that what people really meant were the whiter schools.

“How do these numbers address these attitudes?” Johnson asked. “If these schools close will our diverse kids feel less like a part of the community?” l

The Maze Runner series novelist discusses newest book at local bookshop

est-selling author James Dashner made a visit to King’s English Bookshop in Salt Lake City for a discussion and signing of his new book—a sequel to the Maze Runner series that garnered massive success—"The Maze Cutter.”

For the many fans of his young adult novels, the evening of Oct. 4 was a spectacular event as fans lined up for a chance to get to see their favorite author in person, even getting an opportunity to talk to Dashner, ask him questions that ranged from “Did you always know you were going to be a writer?” to “How did you come up with the idea for the trilogy?”

Dashner, who said that the 1954 novel “Lord of the Flies” and the television show “Lost” were both huge inspirations in his own writing, answered every question.

“It’s been a life changer for me; it’s been such a big part of my life,” Dashner said, showing appreciation for the fans and the triumphant results of the award-winning series.

“I really thought I was done with the Maze Runner world, but my editor and I were having lunch and he said, ‘One more Maze Runner book. How about it?’”

News of an addition to the Maze Runner series excited his fans, such as David Burks, a young, aspiring film director who sat front row at the discussion before waiting

to get his copy of “The Maze Cutter” signed.

“I started reading all of his books since the movie came out,” said Burks. “I like the aspect of the characters. If you don’t have one character, then it kind of falls apart.”

After the discussion and answering questions from his fans, Dashner signed his books, took pictures with fans and offered writing advice.

“Writing can be a very long and arduous, even lonely, journey. Just keep writing.

I wrote ‘The Maze Runner’ in a fairly quick amount of time—about three months—but then spent years rewriting, redrafting, editing, making sure the story was as good as it could be only for it to go through rejection after rejection until finally someone wanted to publish it,” Dashner said. “Just keep writing.”

Burks stood in line with his book, already a few pages in, waiting his turn to meet Dashner. He said the trilogy has been a source of inspiration to him as he works in the film industry.

“I expected him to be a bit more strict, but he’s a very nice guy. He’s very humble,” said Burks after meeting his favorite novelist. “The stories have paved a new path for people. The friendships in the books kind of stick to you.” l

While women’s tennis is popular on a worldwide level with the rise of players like the Williams sisters, it is difficult for it to match the notoriety of basketball and football that sell

“Our high school administration tries to get the word out when we are playing,” Zimmerman said. “Sometimes I would pay for people to get in. Many people don’t understand the sport. I’m not sure if that will ever change. People just don’t know how to come to an event and know when they are allowed to cheer for it. It is not the most crowd-friendly sport. More people are turning to tennis. Even if some players don’t play varsity, they can still play tennis forever. I started a tennis academy that has 50 additional girls. They have a different coach. They play different developmental teams. Our total group is 70 strong. We have a team atmosphere.” l

Utah Jazz and Instructure accepting nominations for top educators

ominations are now open for the Utah Jazz Most Valuable Educators, presented by Instructure, the Utah-based creator of the Canvas Learning Management System. The public is invited to nominate local teachers who make an impact at their school, in their community, and who inspire students.

The appreciation program will honor 14 educators throughout the 2022-23 Jazz regular season with the first recipient announced on Friday, Nov. 18 at Vivint Arena (301 S. Temple) during the Jazz home game against the Phoenix Suns.

“The outpouring of nominations last season only reinforced the importance of this program and the community’s desire to publicly thank and recognize our educators,” said Jim Olson, Utah Jazz president.

Each winning educator will receive a $1,000 classroom grant (courtesy of Instructure), a surprise classroom visit or assembly, a personalized Jazz jersey and free tickets to a Jazz game where they will be guests of Instructure.

Angel’s Hands offers financial help for children with rare diseases

hen Mark Kristensen’s son Matt was 4 years old, he was diagnosed with mucopolysaccharidosis, a rare genetic disease. They were told he would probably not make it to his 12th birthday.

Not only did Matt celebrate his 12th birthday, but he lived another four years before he passed away in 2002. His life inspired the creation of the Angel’s Hands Foundation, an organization that is now his legacy.

“It started with 10 families that had a child with MPS in Utah,” Kristensen said. “Our mission has evolved over the years to improve the quality of life for individuals with rare or undiagnosed medical conditions.”

Because they understand the financial implications of having a child with a rare disease, Kristensen and his wife Roxann started Angel’s Hands to help families pay for things insurance wouldn’t cover like therapy equipment, specialty strollers and bikes, travel expenses for medical purposes and deductibles or coinsurance payments.

“Utah’s medical community is fabulous but when you’re working with these rare diseases you might have to travel to Boston or Dallas and no insurance will pay for the travel and lodging and meals when you do that,” Kristensen said. “Anything that could improve the quality of life for families, we’ll consider assisting with.”

Kristensen said Matt influenced many people throughout his short life. He was the unofficial No. 1 fan/mascot for the Utah Grizzlies ice hockey team and dyed his hair green during the team’s season. He also ran the smoke machine with the Grizzlies’ mascot, Grizzbee.

Matt wanted Kristensen to read him every Grizzlies article in the newspaper so he could talk about the team’s season at the games.

In the 20 years since Matt’s death, Angel’s Hands has helped hundreds of families. Kristensen considers it a paying forward for the wonderful people who helped his son.

“He was so social that people didn’t know what his cognitive limitations were,” Kristensen said. “He was loved by everybody and had a charisma that not every kid has, but a lot of special needs kids do. I call it the ‘It Factor’ where people just want to know them and befriend them. He was one of those.”

The organization founded for their son has allowed the Kristensens to offer assistance to other families like theirs. Angel’s Hands will help pay for home or van modifications, track systems that allow parents to move older children around the house, therapy hot tubs and specialty camps.

“Let us pay for the things we can pay for and you take your money and enhance the quality of your life by taking a family vacation,” he said. “Back when we were dealing with my son, we would spend that money on medical bills instead of taking a vacation. There are families that won’t ask for help because pride is a powerful thing.”

Angel’s Hands receives a lot of community support. Friends and families have organized motorcycle rides, hockey and golf tournaments, and car shows to help raise money and the Friend Raiser Gala on Nov. 13 at the Viridian Event Center (8030 S. 1830 West) in West Jordan brings in lots of financial resources.

Barking up the wrong tree

M

y dog Jedi started barking at cars. All the time. I don’t know why but my best guess is she a) hates cars, b) loves cars, c) wants to scare cars or d) she needs a ride to Petsmart to pick up some jerky treats and tennis balls.

I stop her from dragging us both into traffic by creating a distraction, usually with yummy treats. I tell her to look at me, hoping to snag her attention away from the tempting Hondas and Toyotas with their tantalizing and rumbly engines.

Sometimes she continues flinging herself toward cars but once she realizes a treat is coming, in the form of mozzarella or pepperoni, she usually stops barking and waits to be rewarded. Not really rocket surgery, but it works.

Someone suggested Jedi’s barking could be a reaction to stress which is probably true because we’re all as stressed as a Yellowstone bison being approached by human-shaped idiots.

Jedi also feels the urge to run outside at 3 a.m. to bark at neighbor dogs, tree shadows and (probably) aliens. Her woofing seems to be important. It’s like breaking news in the canine world.

I can’t yell at her to be quiet because then we’d both be barking at three in the morning. Plus, she’d translate my yapping as, “You are doing such a good job at howling, Jedi. Please, continue louder. Some neighbors might still be asleep.”

Once the noise levels drop, I check social media where barking has been elevated to an Olympic sport. Viral TikToks catch people in the act of snarling at each other. Twitter feeds show a slow regression back to our caveman roots where everyone spoke in grunts and howls.

that baloney. Restaurant guests bark at the waitstaff, which usually ends with a footprint on your waffle. Y’all bark so much, I think some of you might have rabies.

Dogs bark because they’re excited, hungry, bored, scared, tired, playful and frustrated. The trick is to distract them and teach them a different way to communicate. Humans also need a different way to communicate, because barking isn’t working.

It doesn’t matter if you’re barking in fear or anger or fatigue, your message gets lost in the noise. Every time. Have you ever screamed at someone and thought, “Boy, I really think I got my point across. I feel so heard”? Yeah, me neither.

On the opposite end of the rainbow, my daughter had a teacher who only spoke in a whisper. The kids had to be quiet to hear what she was saying. It was kind of creepy talking to her because she’d forget she was talking to an adult and keep whispering.

Maybe there’s a happy medium between barking and mumbling. I know, let’s call it “civil discourse” where our conversations actually promote understanding and connection. Revolutionary!

Instead of talking to prove your point, can you kindly explain why you hate avocados, without melting into a puddle of sweat? Can you avoid the gnashing and spittle that comes with barking and just talk like a human being?

It might take practice but maybe if we calm down, our families will settle, our communities will rebuild and our civil discourse will improve.
