ark Miller Subaru is in the second semester of a volunteer project, tutoring third-grade math students at Mill Creek Elementary School. The first semester started with a partnership with the United Way, but this semester they have taken it on as their own with Marketing and Guest Relations Director Mike Aguilar leading the effort to help students reach grade level math competency. Aguilar said that the effort come from Mark Miller’s “commitment to making a difference in the lives of others” and desire to help struggling children in our community. “If there is one thing people should know about Mark Miller is that he has a huge heart,” Aguilar said. Mark Miller Subaru employees are using Zoom to help tutor several dozen students with the goal of getting them caught up and proficient in math for future success. The tutors start with a Kahoot quiz each day to engage the students and get their attention before breaking into “tutoring teams” using an iReady math tutoring program. Mill Creek Elementary, a Title I school, maintains a commitment as their mission states, “Every Student – Every Day – Every Opportunity,” to foster academic growth for each student. Tutoring through this kind of individualized and small group attention not only increases math comprehension and

learning strategies, but can boost students’ confidence and approach to getting help in the future. According to the Utah Education Network (UEN), Utah Grade 3 mathematics

focuses on four critical areas, “developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100, developing understanding of

fractions, especially unit fractions, developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area, and describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes.” As an added incentive for students to stay motivated and do well on their iReady lessons, Mark Miller Subaru gives them a “Suba Bleu Buck” for each lesson they pass to collect and redeem at their “stores” that are set up to have fun and educational games and prizes. They held a Christmas store, Valentine’s Day store, and will hold another store at the end of the semester. Bleu, the dog pictured on the “Suba Bleu Bucks,” is a mixed-breed dog adopted by Mark Miller Subaru and has the role of “Love Promise Ambassador” greeting customers and offering comfort and joy to all. Aguilar said he would not change the experience of working alongside Miller and other Subaru employees helping the students at Mill Creek Elementary for anything. “Watching these kids grasp a new concept in mathematics is something truly remarkable. Not just because they’ve learned something new, but because they are gaining confidence knowing that they can do anything if they put their mind to it including, but not limited to, a challenging math problem.” l

ighland Cove is a senior living community and has a local hero who has gone the extra mile during these difficult times. Alana Jones works for Highland Care Center, a skilled rehab facility. The two buildings share similar names but are different entities and have different purposes. Among the numerous senior living centers hit hard with COVID-19 outbreaks in 2020, Highland Cove in Millcreek happened to be just one of them. Brent Pitts has been the sales director for Highland Cove for the last three years and talked about the past year. “Yes, it’s true that our community was affected in the worst way in the beginning while the world was figuring out COVID, but since then, we have been COVID-free in our assisted living community and have worked very diligently to protect our residents and associates.” To help make sure that the residents and staff stay safe and health, Pitts said, “Over the last year we have had to become very creative in providing meaningful interaction for our residents. Social distancing, wearing of masks, limited visitations from family, has certainly taken its toll. But I am so proud of all of staff that have gone the extra mile to promote love and a sense of belonging for our Highland Cove family. We love them so much. I can’t think of a population more adversely affected by the COVID measures the country has had to take and they have just weathered the storm beautifully.” Pitts said they were one of the first communities to receive the vaccine, both for residents and employees and are having fun once again with happy hour, exercise classes, concerts, and, of course, bingo. Highland Cove recently praised Jones. Pitts said Jones was chosen as their community hero because of her “great attitude and her willingness to fill in for whatever role

was needed. Always willing to pick up an extra shift, put in long hours, hold a hand and slow down when needed, and to fill in the gap when she saw the need.” Besides Jones being highlighted as the community hero, she was awarded with a “Treat Yourself” basket filled with gifts. Michael Fender, executive director at Highland Care Center, said, “I am so proud of the culture we have fostered at Highland Care Center. None of us are perfect, but when we act together, we can be. Alana has reflected this so beautifully as she is always looking for additional ways to help, works long

hours, and does whatever it takes to make a difference in the lives of our residents and associates.” Gary Webster, executive director at Highland Cove Senior Living, said, “We are thrilled to recognize Alana Jones as a hero in the community, just one of many that work in healthcare on the frontlines of this pandemic. alentine’s Day, like most everything, was celebrated differently this year at local schools. Safety protocols for reducing the risk of COVID were in place for this year’s holiday. Ann Kane, the principal of Mill Creek Elementary, said that the “PTA provided each class at our school with a ‘Valentine Party in a Bag’ and teachers let parents know the specifics for the parties within their class.” Some schools like Edgemont Elementary in the Canyons School District allowed students to bring in valentines and individually wrapped store bought candy and other treats, but required that cards and treats be brought to school on Feb. 4, a full week ahead of their celebrations on Feb. 11 so they could quarantine. Quarantining cards is one of the mea-

sures the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommended to keep celebrations for the holiday safe. The guidelines include at least 72 hours of quarantine, the generally accepted amount of time the virus can live on a surface. On their website, the CDC also suggested that children wash their hands and wear masks while preparing their valentines for distribution. Some schools similar to the Mill Creek Elementary celebrations, like Bell View Elementary in Sandy, provided materials at school for making cards and asked students not to bring in any items from home. Their PTA provided treats for the celebrations and sponsored sending valentines to “adopted grandparents” at local nursing homes. Mary, a teacher from Sandy, said her second-grade class “brought in valentines

and individually wrapped treats a week ahead of time, and all valentines had to be distributed by teachers rather than students. All valentines were to remain untampered with until the child brought them home at the end of the school day.” Celebrations for virtual learners seemed to vary as well. Kam, a mother of a son in first- grade remote learning, said, “packets were provided by the school to pick up for a virtual celebration that included an art project and cookie decorating that they could all do together.” Jen, a mother of a virtual learner in the Salt Lake City School District, said that her “class did not celebrate the holiday, and I was a little bummed, but my daughter didn’t seem to mind, so it was OK. There’s always next year!” l

OVID has upended many aspects of people’s daily routines. Exercising at the local gym is one such routine that may have fallen off your todo list. However, some gyms in Millcreek are going above and beyond to make sure that if people want to exercise, they can do so with some peace of mind when it comes to sanitization and safety. Epic Fitness, 1227 E. 3300 South, has reconfigured their gym and services to make sure that the health and safety of its members are top priority. When COVID-19 impacted the state, Elena Rocco, manager of Awesomeness at Epic Fitness, stated, “We wanted to ensure that Epic Fitness was the safest place our members could train. We knew we wanted to limit our touch points and make it easy and convenient for our members to clean and sanitize all equipment used. We were also able to physically distance members by creating workout pods, where you have your own space and equipment. We know how important it is to continue to stay fit, strong and healthy during this time and we wanted to be able to provide that to all our members.” Epic Fitness member Fedora Grey joined at the beginning of December 2020. Grey stated, “I was looking for something smaller and more customized. I was a victim of those big barcode gyms and never saw any results.” When asked if COVID had anything to do with the decision in joining Epic Fitness over other gyms, Grey stated that she spent a lot of time talking to Ben (Fogel) the owner about the safety and cleanliness factors before choosing to join. Grey did go to the bigger gyms during COVID and saw no clean-

ing being done and did not see anyone wearing masks. She said that members at Epic take ownership of cleanliness and make sure to clean everything they have touched at the end of their session. “One of the things I love about Epic is that when I come in, I see men and women of all shapes and sizes, there is no judgment and everyone is welcome here; it’s just a great community to be a part of,” Grey said. Steven Joffee is another member of Epic Fitness. “I knew the training at Epic was targeted and I was very worried about COVID and being exposed to people so I didn’t want to go to a regular gym, and I knew Ben would run things right. It was a combination of knowing it would be a safe environment and then being somewhere where they would push me,” Joffee stated. Joffee added that Fogel’s focus is on safety and longevity, not packing people in. “I started going to a different gym before coming back to Epic and didn’t feel safe, no one wanted to wear masks, didn’t take cleaning measures. I went twice and stopped,” he said. Another Millcreek gym, SLC Strength & Conditioning, at 3232 S. Highland Dr., also took COVID-19 precautions seriously. Owner Steve Pizza and co-founder Kristy Pizza, stated, “Though this pandemic has presented us with enormous challenges, it has always been very important to us, as an employer and service, that our employees and customers are safe, happy, and getting value. When this pandemic came to light, acting quickly was necessary and we completely redesigned how our facility would function with full implementation of changes (made with involved guidance from the feder-

al, state, county and city public health guidelines) in less than a 24-hour time frame. “Those changes included the immediate implementation of mask mandates, spacing of workout stations to 12 feet, individual sanitization bottles and towel for each member, and a complete redesign of how we implement workouts to mitigate sharing of equipment throughout the workout. We also enforce a class cap and reservations ahead of time to ensure that all members were always more than 6-feet apart when in our facility. Additionally, we had upgraded our air ventilation system in August of 2019 and immediately installed anti-viral filters to ensure adequate and safe airflow within the facility when the pandemic hit.” Steven Joffee, another member of Epic Fitness in is a return member. Take care of your mental and social health during COVID

The other day I was talking with my husband and we were both commenting on how we’ve felt a bit of depression set in from this long COVID year. We all need human interaction to thrive, and with health challenges, financial pressures, political unrest, and so much uncertainty, it’s no wonder that many of us feel a little down. I wanted to share some tips from Salt Lake County’s Health Department on how to improve or maintain your mental and social health as we head into the final stretch. Take breaks from the news and social media - It is important to stay informed, but constantly hearing about the pandemic or politics is exhausting and upsetting. Limit your news and social media intake to once a day or every other day. Practice Mindfulness – Set aside time every day (even for five minutes) to be in the present moment. You can do this by meditating, journaling, or focusing on your breathing. Go outside for 30 minutes every day– Bundle up and get outside. Being outdoors is a natural antidepressant as sunshine naturally increases serotonin and endorphins that boost energy and reduce pain. Get enough sleep – Stick to a regular sleep schedule and give yourself extra wind-down time each night before bed to read, stretch, and/or meditate to ensure quality sleep. Stay in touch – Be intentional with your connections by scheduling regular video chats, phone calls, or text messages with loved ones. Try online exercise classes – Salt Lake County Parks and Rec are hosting online exercise classes for all activity levels. Check out the schedules at slco.org/parks-recreation. Take Virtual Tours with loved ones – The Utah Hogle Zoo, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, The Leonardo, and the Tracy Aviary all offer virtual experiences to enjoy with family and friends. Write letters – Create handwritten letters with your household for a senior citizen fighting loneliness. blood pressure, and provide mental stimulation. After reviewing this list, I have to admit that I need to do better on my sleep habits. And keeping my cell phone next to my bed is probably not helpful. One thing we did this past summer is welcomed our first pet (fish excluded) into our family. Ripley, our mini goldendoodle puppy, has forced us out for walks every day, and she’s kept life interesting during the pandemic. Some of my favorite memories have been Zoom calls with the entire Winder or Newton extended family so we could catch up and hear how everyone was doing. This pandemic will only break down our mental health and friendships if we let it, so take active steps to stay engaged, integrate healthy behaviors, and connect with our loved ones. The earlier we start saving, the longer the savings have to add up,” Ramjoue said. Josie’s entry is titled “Explore New Worlds.” It juxtaposed the seemingly “quiet” activity of reading with what readers might be experiencing in their minds as they discover new ideas, people and stories. “Josie’s design was praised by judge David Damschen, Utah State Treasurer, for its ‘sense of security, happiness, comfort and fascination’ contrasted with the ‘dazzling scene of endless possibilities for discovery and adventure,’” Ramjoue wrote. Josie said that was right on with what she was trying to express. “I find that a lot of people talk about books as if they’re reading and going to a different world. There’s the theme of taking your mind to a different place. I thought, ‘Why not do that?’ So I did some basic sketches, and after a while I landed on one I liked and stuck with it,” Josie said. Josie’s skills have been improved with art classes at school and some summer classes at the Art Institute in Salt Lake. Those classes taught her techniques for hand drawing, lines and color. But she’s a self-taught digital artist, which is the medium she used to produce her entry. “I created my artwork with the program Procreate on my iPad, and used my Apple pencil to draw. It’s a really good drawing program. I haven’t taken any digital art classes—just what I’ve learned using the program and on the internet,” Josie said. Josie’s talents go beyond visual arts. She also plays the violin and entered an original composition in a past Reflections contest. But drawing is her main interest. These days her style is influenced by the graphic novels and comic books she reads. “She’s always loved drawing—it’s her hobby. She’s got an Instagram account and has some amazing work posted there,” said her mom Julie Callahan. Josie insists her mom has to love her work because…well, she’s her mom. But as one of only two winners in the seventh- and eighth-grade age group, it’s obvious that her mom isn’t her only fan. “When we got the phone call that I had won, my mom had just picked me up from school. We were pretty excited. For winning I got a box of some fun little knick-knacks, the $1,000 my529 scholarship and a lot of my bookmarks. “I gave the bookmarks out to my friends at school and to the librarian. I see kids use them sometimes. It’s pretty cool to see my art professionally printed,” Josie said. l

Like a mother in a Disney movie, my cell phone died inexplicably. Well, not inexplicably. I dropped it in the toilet. I was wearing jeans for the first time in seven months and had the phone in my back pocket when it promptly fell into the commode. My phone, not my back pocket. There’s a universal response when you drop your phone in liquid; you reach in and grab the damn thing. It could be submerged in molten lava or boiling oil; you will instinctively reach for the phone at the expense of ever using your hand again. Snatching it up, I screamed several unprintable words and resorted to 15 minutes of “No, no, no, no, no!” I shook my phone, blew in it, prayed over it and dashed home to dump it in a bowl of rice. (A robot on Mars can send information to NASA but I have to submerge my phone in rice because it got wet.) I thought, this would make a great Instagram post and frantically looked for my phone so I could take a picture of my phone sitting in a bowl of rice. But I was phoneless. I reached for my phone nonstop. I absently grabbed the TV remote, trying to scroll through Tik Tok. I picked up my computer mouse to check the time. I kept patting my leggings where my cell phone used to be, frisking myself like some weird felon.

I realized I’m obsessed with how many steps I walk. I’m preoccupied with social media. I’m dependent on my phone to give me instant info. If I wanted to order from Amazon, I had to go into ANOTHER ROOM and use my computer. After 24 hours, I turned on my phone. Nothing. Minutes later, I was kicking in the door at my cell phone company, begging them to fix my phone. They know me well because, having been bitten by a radioactive clutz, I break my phone often. But this time, they just shook their head and called the time of death. Then someone suggested I contact

Simple Fix in West Jordan, saying they work miracles. Miracles sounded pretty good, but they couldn’t look at my phone for several days. Several days without a phone? Impossible! What would I listen to while walking my dog? Who was Scam Likely going to call? What if Samantha Bee texts me about a job? How would I waste hours of my time doing something unnecessary? The typical cell phone weighs four or five ounces but after a day without my phone, I felt weightless. After two days I could talk to my husband without furtive glances at my phone. After three days, I didn’t miss playing Words with Friends. Is this what life is supposed to feel like? I swore when I got my phone back, it wouldn’t control me anymore. Then I got my phone back. I listened to all the podcasts, played all the games, bought everything on Amazon and beat my family at Words with Friends. I ignored my husband, tuned out the world in general and scrolled endlessly through social media platforms. The lesson here should be turn off your phone and interact with the real world. But what I learned was I need to buy cargo pants with dozens of secure pockets so my phone will never fall into the toilet again.
