NEW MILLCREEK HISTORIC COMMISSION READY TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE

T

he Gardner residence in Millcreek is the oldest Utah home still standing in its original location.

It was restored to its original appearance by Robert Gardner Jr.’s great-great granddaughter and gained official historic designation when it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

The Gardner house, located at 1475 E. Murphys Lane, was built on the site of Salt Lake’s first saw mill in 1848. Robert Gardner’s descendants formed a foundation and boot-strapped the renovation for years on their own.

This is a task that Millcreek officials are hoping they can help with—giving an assist to residents and homeowners who want to identify, restore and preserve historic homes.

In May, which was coincidentally deemed Historic Preservation Month by the National Register of Historic Places, Millcreek launched its own Historic Preservation Commission, tasked with seeking out historically important homes and buildings in Millcreek, getting them listed on the National Register, and putting protections in place to ensure they are around for future generations to enjoy.

Additionally, the commission is tasked with ad-

vising the community on the protection of cultural resources, and working with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to preserve historic sites.

The creation of the commission was the first step for Millcreek to become a Certified Local Government (CLG). As a CLG, Millcreek will be able to apply for federal grants for historic preservation, and will be able to take advantage of other federal and state incentives and tax benefits to promote the preservation of historic buildings and sites.

The commission is made up of seven members, one from each city council district and three atlarge members. Many interested volunteers applied for the available seats when Mayor Jeff Silvestrini announced the city’s plans to form a preservation commission. The members of the new committee are Peter Brinton, Kaye Donahoe, Molly Enos, Tiffany Hunter Greene, Emily Johnson, Ryan Lufkin and Andrea Maxfield.

Lufkin is a direct descendant of John Scott, one of the first settlers to live in Millcreek. Lufkin says there is a “really rich history around Millcreek, being the summer getaway area for Salt Lake residents during the turn of the century.” He wants to help “protect the treasures that we know are out there so we don’t lose them.”

Donahoe lives in Old Farm, which was originally called Hill Farm in 1854. The grounds belonged to the Hogle family, who built a summer house there, and there are still a few buildings left. The original Hill Farm house was destroyed when 700 East was widened, and Donahoe, enthralled with the rich history of Old Farm, hopes to get protections in place for the remaining historic sites.

When Millcreek was incorporated as a city, it inherited Salt Lake County's Historic Preservation Ordinance. The ordinance fell short of the preservation efforts desired by Millcreek officials. At the time, only four structures were identified as historic, and there were no protections in place for those or future buildings.

The four homes in the original ordinance are the Gardner Residence and the Edward Pugh House (1299 E. 4500 South, designated in 1978). Next door to the Pugh house sits the Butler/Wallin House (1045 E. 4500 South, designated in 2005) and the Mill Creek Farmhouse (1106 E. 4500 South).

The Evergreen Avenue Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, but was not recognized in the inherited Salt Lake County ordinance, along with several other homes that are also on the National Register.

are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the new commission is tasked with identifying the myriad other buildings and places that can be registered.

The Susanna Bradford Mansion, also known as Oakwood, was the first electrically lighted home in the area. It is located at 2610 Evergreen Ave. and was designated in 1979.

The Nathaniel Baldwin Home, located at 2374 E. Evergreen Ave. in the Evergreen Avenue Historic District, was designated in 1985. Nathaniel Baldwin is credited with inventing headphones. The Evergreen Avenue Historic District is also home to the Baldwin Radio Factory, which manufactured Baldwin’s headphones and produced them for the war effort during World War I. The factory, which was built in the early 1900s, and was renovated and reused to house businesses, a process coined “adaptive reuse” by preservationists.

The Ernie and Irmgard Bourne House at 3460 E. Ranch View Drive was designated in 2016.

The Roberta Sugden House, designated in 2016, is located at 1810 E. Orchard Drive.

It is a glass house designed by John Sugden, one of Utah’s most influential modern architects, for his mother.

The Amanda Conk Best House, at 3622 S. 1100 East, was built in 1896 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. Also known as the Boyle House, the Beal House, and the Aoki House, it is a brick Queen Anne style house.

The Fish-Baughman House, designated in 2016, is a one-story, California ranchstyle house at 3436 E. Ranch View Drive built in 1955. A partly pre-fabricated structure, it was deemed significant because Cliff May, the architect famous for designing and marketing the infamous post-war “dream homes” designed it.

There are many other buildings and homes throughout Millcreek that are recognized by the State Office of Historic Preservation and Preservation Utah. They include the Libby Edwards School, the East Millcreek School, the Old Farm homestead, the Iceberg Drive In, Wasatch Lawn Entry, several post-modern homes and many older Victorian homes.

Free Comcast lift zones provide hotspot connections across the state

A

ccess to internet connection can mean the difference between staying ahead or falling behind. As the COVID-19 crisis demonstrated, families without access to the internet struggled to keep kids engaged with online school and remote work became a challenge.

To address digital equity, Comcast has equipped more than 30 locations across Utah with free Wi-Fi Lift Zones to get students and adults online.

“We are committed to digital inclusivity for all Utahns no matter where they live or their financial status,” said Deneiva Knight, external affairs director, Comcast Utah. “Offering free Wi-Fi Lift Zones with Comcast’s Internet Essentials program, which provides internet services to low-income customers, is a huge step toward connecting students and adults to online resources in safe, reliable locations.”

Working with a network of nonprofit, community, and city partners, Comcast added Lift Zones in its service areas including West Valley, Millcreek, Murray and Bountiful. Lift Zones will complement Comcast’s Internet Essential program, which has helped connect more than 160,000 low-income Utahns to the internet at home.

Since 2019, Comcast has worked with

Utah partners to install free internet services to sites, which provide low-income students with a space to participate in distance learning and complete homework. Adults are also using Lift Zones to work remotely, apply for jobs, and learn digital skills, all at no cost.

“Community partners and organizations that align with our promise to create a dynamic community are leveraging South Salt Lake’s three Lift Zones,” said Lucas Horns, a City of South Salt Lake employee. “It is enhancing resources around the city and promoting a sense of community at the same time. What’s more, Comcast’s Lift Zone has become a hub for small businesses and other organizations to use.”

kyline High School student Alan Z. H. Mo of Murray has been awarded the prestigious Presidential Scholar award. Each year, students throughout the nation are handpicked, first as candidates and then as recipients, by members of The Commission on Presidential Scholars. The commission is comprised of eminent private citizens appointed directly by the sitting president. The members have expertise in the fields of education, medicine, law, social services, business, and other professions. It is the responsibility of the committee to find students who demonstrate exceptional academic acumen in a specific field of study.

Alan received recognition as a Presidential Scholar in the Career and Technical Education discipline. After expressing his immense gratitude for the recognition, he said his goal is to pursue a career in computer science.

Throughout his high school career, Alan attended both Skyline High School and programs through Utah’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways. Utah high school-aged students who meet the criteria can choose from a variety of CTE programs that ultimately provide the student with college credit and/or certifications in high-demand technical careers and jobs. Per their statement, “CTE provides all students access to high-quality, rigorous career-focused programs that result in attainment of credentials with labor market value.”

“Alan is a student who not only excels in an individual context, but he continually inspires and helps those around him,” a representative of Utah CTE said. “He is extraordinarily bright, with a genuine passion for the work that he does. He is a true example of what it means to be a revered student.”

Alan is one of four Utah students to receive a 2022 Presidential Scholar Award, besting nearly 3,000 other candidates in the state alone. When compared to the 3.7 million students anticipated to graduate this year, it makes his selection as a scholar all the more impressive. The Presidential Scholar award was first introduced in 1958 and since then nearly 7,900 students have been recognized.

U.S Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, spoke highly of the 161 students honored this year.

“Our 2022 Presidential Scholars represent the best of America, and remind us that when empowered by education, there are no limits to what our young people can achieve.

I join President Biden [in celebrating] the class of scholars whose pursuit of knowledge, generosity of spirit, and exceptional talents bring our nation tremendous pride.”

of years, in particular, noting, “Throughout one of the most trying periods in our nation’s history and amid our recovery from the pandemic, our students have once again demonstrated their strength.”

Alan is one of the newer recipients to be recognized for his ability and accomplishment in the career and technical education field. In 2015, the commission decided to extend its scope by recognizing CTE students.

His recognition underlines the importance of CTE students in the state and the nation at large. Many of these programs offered by CTE are diverse ranging from agriculture and architecture to hospitality and public safety. Naturally, these pathways represent the backbone of the American workforce, marking their acknowledgment as all the more impactful.

Cardona concluded by saying, “Our students have once again demonstrated their strength and that they have so much to contribute to our country. Thanks to them, I know America's future is bright." l

Skyline student-teacher team selected for Silent Heroes program

tudents from Skyline High School qualified for the National History Day competition while competing in the Utah National History Day this spring.

The event was held at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City.

More than 3,000 Utah students, from fourth to 12th grades, participated in Utah National History Day learning activities in their schools or districts this school year.

The National History Day competition will take place virtually in June.

The Skyline students who qualified for the National History Day are Aiden de Boer, Charity Dummar, Eliza Hunter, John Paul Markosian, Gwen McConkie, Ashley Peterson, Yucheng Chen, Elle Dykstra, Jenna Tran, and Joyce Wang.

Topics for the projects are selected from local, national and world history by the students. They can choose to create an exhibit, a documentary film, a paper, a live performance, or a website to present their work. There is no cost for students to submit an entry.

Melinda Reay, Skyline social studies teacher and 2019 Utah History Teacher of the year, said, “We have been building our history program for the last couple of years. Especially since Skyline is known for our STEM.” Reay has also been selected with student Ayden Cline, to participate in the Sacrifice for Freedom: World War II in the Pacific Student & Teacher Institute, a student-teacher cooperative learning program. The program is coordinated through National History Day and will take place in Hawaii this summer.

Reay explained that she began encouraging students to participate in National History Day activities because she wanted to help them to avoid simply fulfilling a class requirement by just getting through the class. “I wanted to give them an opportunity to dive into a topic that they are interested in, to focus on the ability to write and create an argument, and to become well-rounded,” she said.

“History Day offers teachers a powerful way to interest today’s students in history and to develop a foundation for civic engagement,” said Wendy Rex-Atzet, Utah’s state coordinator. “Each student chooses what they want to research. In the process of discovering something new, students also gain concrete skills in research, writing, critical thinking, and creative presentation. The intellectual work involved builds college and career skills that will serve them for years to come.

“They are asking hard questions and learning answers, as well as learning how to analyze info, to research, to assess sources, and to learn about archives,” she said. “These are really terrific skills that

are built into this competition that they will take with them beyond what they are doing with this one project.”

In preparation for the Hawaii institute, Cline will develop a Silent Hero profile to be published online during the 2022-23 academic year at NHDSilentHeroes.org as part of the Sacrifice for Freedom program. Cline selected Ivan LeRoy Bills, a Riverton resident who died at sea at age 18 while serving in the Navy, for his project.

“I wanted to memorialize a service member who was missing in action or buried at sea in order to give the person the memorialization they deserve,” Cline said.

“He won several different medals, and some haven’t even been put on his grave site.”

Cline connected with Bills’ family and learned that Bills was awarded the Purple Heart and Navy Silver Star and that the family had never received those recognitions. Through Cline’s work, the awards were added to Bills’ gravesite and to his military commendations.

Cline explained that Bills was a gunner on a ship who died while defending it from enemy fire. “He was just a little bit older than me and to go into a war at the scale of what it was is very eye-opening,” Cline said. “It’s very eye-opening to learn about the Pacific theater and the sacrifices made there.”

Cline and Reay will tour Pearl Harbor as well as the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific Punchbowl as part of the weeklong Hawaii educational trip at the end of July.

in the Pacific during World War II,” Executive Director Cathy Gorn said. “Each year, when students read their eulogies for their Silent Heroes at military cemeteries in Hawaii, I can see the deep meaningful connections that transcend time and place.

The past becomes the present in that moment.”

Reay approached Cline about participating in the project as she saw his passion for history. “He is the first ever Utah

student in the 15-year history of the Silent Heroes program to be selected,” she said.

Only 15 of the 54 student-teacher teams that entered were selected.

“I’m really, really excited about this opportunity,” Cline said. He was in his fourth period physics class when Reay took him out of class to tell him he was selected. “It was an awesome feeling, and I felt like I could walk on water,” he said.

The program, coordinated through National History Day, is sponsored by the Pearl Harbor Historic Site Partners, including Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, Pacific Historic Parks, USS Missouri Memorial Association, and Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum at Pearl Harbor. The program began as an opportunity for student-teacher teams to study World War II in the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. l

Granite School District students are invited to participate in summer music camps

W

ith summer break rapidly approaching, students and their families are looking for ways to pass the time and beat the heat.

For those students who are interested in music programs, Granite School District has lined up a series of camps where students can learn or refine their skills during the summer months.

Matteo Krause is the music director at Evergreen Junior High School and a championing voice of music summer music programs.

Krause has taught all over the world including in the United States, Turkey, Brazil and China.

Throughout his studies and career, he has been exposed to the music of many cultures and its enriching impact on students’ lives.

“We have an awesome opportunity available for students this summer through the Granite Junior Youth Symphonies program.

Not only does this opportunity allow for students to come together and have fun, but the benefits of learning a musical instrument are widely cited and studied. Music helps build confidence as well as refine important skills that intersect with other pertinent facets of learning,” Krause said.

The Granite Junior Youth Symphony will take place from June 6 through July 1, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Cottonwood High School, 5715 S. 1300 East in Murray.

“The benefit of having the camp take place in the morning is it allows for students to participate on a daily basis. The camp is over and done by 9:30 in the morning. We purposefully work in that time slot so that students have the rest of the day to dedicate to other activities,” Krause said.

At the Granite Youth Symphony students have the opportunity to engage with other like-minded peers, learn a new instrument, or improve on an instrument they’re currently learning. The symphony is taught by qualified teachers and instructors who can allocate the proper time and attention to ensure the student walks away having met their intended goal.

“During these youth symphonies, students will be able to build on the strong foundation they gained already in band and orchestra and continue to advance even further. The Granite Youth Symphonies bring in students from all over our school district and will make for some great collaborations across school boundaries. Please consider having your student take part in this awesome opportunity,” Krause added.

Furthermore, there is a specific opportunity for next year’s incoming sixth-graders. The Granite School Introductory Band and Orchestra Camp will also take place June 6 through July 1. It will also be held at Cottonwood High

School. This particular camp is geared toward students who are looking to learn the basics of a specific instrument. Unlike the youth symphony, which focuses more on a group learning format, the introductory camp allows students to get one-on-one instruction regarding a specific instrument.

ested in joining band and orchestra during junior high, the Introductory Band and Orchestra Camp is a great opportunity,” Krause said.

Blessing of the Hands at St. Mark’s Hospital honors health care workers

he 21st Blessing of the Hands took place at St. Mark’s Hospital May 12 to honor health care workers with a spiritual respite.

Julie Hogue, a hospital administrator, said, “The annual Blessing of the Hands is important in order to honor all the work that has been going on, especially over the last two years. Healthcare workers are always concerned about other people,” she said, “and this is a good opportunity for them to take a moment to honor themselves.”

Many of the 1,800 doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers united in the outdoor courtyard plaza at St. Mark’s, where spiritual leaders gathered to offer the blessings. A St. Mark’s representative said the Blessing of the Hands ceremony offers a day of healing for our healers. During this event, St. Mark’s Hospital recognizes caregivers and hospital employees for all that they do to promote healing and provide comfort for patients throughout the year.

Spiritual leaders who officiated included representatives from Buddhism, Catholicism, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Islam, Judaism, Lutheranism, Protestant Christianity-Multicultural Baptist, and the Ute Episcopal congregation.

works here uses their hands, and after two hard years of work, I think we are craving blessings for our hands. It is important to pause for a blessing amidst the chaos of working in a hospital.”

The Rev. Jeff Allen, a deacon from St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, said his blessing “asks for God’s compassion, love and healing to spread through the hands.”

The Rev. Anna Weller-Zumwalt, a Soto Zen Buddhist priest, said that her blessing is based on the idea of being Zen, which is about calm attentiveness, so she invites the recipient to be open and mindful in how they are feeling.

Forest S. Cuch, the Ute Episcopal elder, blessed hands while burning sage and bestowing a traditional blessing.

Cormack-Hughes said over the years she has observed that people are drawn to other religions and will receive multiple blessings from the different religious representatives.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of when St. Mark's Hospital was founded by the Episcopal Church in Utah. In 1988, the Episcopal Diocese of Utah sold St. Mark's Hospital to HCA Healthcare. Part of the agreement gave the Diocese some oversight within the hospital, and the Episcopal Community Services (ECS) was created. The ECS is the only ACPE chaplain education program in Utah. Today, ECS is a partner of HCA in Utah, with the depth, capacity, and elasticity to meet hospital needs for professional chaplains.

The Blessing of the Hands ceremony is a celebration in recognition of National Hospital Week, organized by the diocese’s Spiritual Care Team. St. Mark’s Hospital acknowledges the importance of the role of spirituality in the healing process for patients and their family members. l

Skyline tennis ends successful spring season

or the Skyline boys tennis team coach, it’s been quite a year.

“I’ve been a tennis player for the majority of my life,” coach Lesa Coleman-Taggart said. “I played for Olympus and became certified in 2000. I’ve taught at most clubs in the Salt Lake Valley. I coached at Olympus but Skyline called because their coach had left. I’ve loved the sport my whole life.”

That love of the game has helped Taggart instruct and motivate her team and it shows.

Taggart said that several key contributors on the varsity team have helped the Eagles garner an impressive record.

“Ethan Green is our first singles player and is nationally ranked,” Taggart said.

“Our other key players on varsity are Dean Weaver, Tai Jansen, Gunnar Wooler, Michael Cherchio, Drew Wardrop, Sam Stuart and Kyle Rasmussen.”

Losing has been a rare occurrence for the Skyline Eagles this season.

“We lost one match to Brighton,” Taggart said. “They are the toughest rival on the men’s side. There are a couple talented guys on the Park City team, too. Ty Jensen is the only one that is new to our varsity.

be rebuilding a little bit. We have a young and upcoming group of freshmen who are really phenomenal.”

The competition in high school men’s tennis has increased exponentially over the years. Brighton also won the region championship, but the Skyline Eagles pipped them to the state title.

“We always hope that we pull off the win,” Taggart said prior to the state tournament. “Brighton is tough. The abilities of these young men are phenomenal. If I look back on my days of playing, they would be in the middle of collegiate play. The bar has been raised.”

Indeed it has. Not only has the bar been raised in Utah, but the 5A classification has the toughest competition as far as tennis is concerned.

“The UHSAA still has the RPI system,” Taggart said. “It rates each player individually and as doubles partners. The formula is a little strange because it brings in a certain amount of points for a loss.”

The first rounds took place May 1011 and concluded May 19-21. It is a little different from how it was seeded in the past. Usually just seven seeds have been drawn following the region championship, but this year it’s 32. The RPI system is all

walk away from high school with a college diploma. I’m preparing several freshmen for these classes. The majority of players have a GPA above a 3.5, but they are weighted to around 3.9 with those classes.

The academic standing including strength as a student athlete is amazing. It takes a lot of mental and physical strength. All of their tests are during most of these tournaments.” l

Honorees selected at the inaugural Comcast RISE Black Excellence Event

ardware Creative Collective and Comcast partnered to host the inaugural Comcast RISE Black Excellence Event in Salt Lake City on Apr. 20. The celebration honored Utah Black Creatives in a range of industries from the arts, business, education and film to mental health, armed forces, tech and venture capital.

Honorees were selected based on their ability to showcase their creativity through inspiration, intersection and innovation.

“It was truly amazing to see something that started as a vision and brainstorming with folks around a kitchen table turn into an extraordinary celebration of Utah’s Black creatives,” said Deneiva Knight, External Affairs Director, Comcast Mountain West Region. “For me, Hardware Collective is a platform for Black creatives to acknowledge and celebrate themselves and their peers versus waiting and hoping to receive accolades from outsiders. The love and appreciation in the room that night were unmatchable.”

D

uring the pandemic, a new surge of unrest arose in the name of anti-police brutality which prompted people to take another look at the services provided by their respective police departments. In the January issue of the City Journal of Millcreek government, the Unified Police Department Millcreek Precinct Report was analyzed and presented for the year. The services under the UPD were also shown along with alternatives to prevent unnecessary police involvement.

Being an officer of the UPD can be a position attached to a variety of responsibilities. The Millcreek UPD is a subject of focus in the April 25 work meeting as they start the Unified Police Department Funding Discussion. The council meeting on the 25th also announces an officer of the month of March.

The Millcreek United Police Department has been regularly honoring police on a monthly basis. At the city council meetings, the Unified Police Department Millcreek Precinct Officer of the Month is announced and given a reward.

Officer of the Month of February was Detective Danny Diehl who received the award for locating a key witness from video footage on an S-line platform by noting her hat. The witness gave information on suspects which led the detective to find and return the stolen bicycles to Hyland Cyclery and charge four suspects with numerous felonies.

Other Officer of the Month awards are January, Officer Preston Allred and March, Jacob Warner.

The recognition given to these officers is an honor to the work of the department. With the tentative 2022-23 Millcreek General Fund Revenue Budget in the process of revision to appropriately distribute $31,693,142,

the question is how much of the funds will be going toward the department.

“Based on further reflection…We can prepare this tentative budget with as small of a property tax increase… [of] just under 5% and pay for the remainder of the contract costs for Unified Police through a contribution from our general funds of 500,000 dollars. So we are splitting the difference,” said Mayor Jeff Silvestrini. The change and the revenues associated with the increased property tax can be seen on the table presented in UPD 03.

The mayor says many possibilities were discussed to pay for a substantial increase in the 12 months of UPD contract from a large property tax increase, a spread out cost paid for over a longer time span, augmenting it with other funds from the general funds, or implementing a new tax which most other cities in the region have initiated called the telecommunications and energy franchise tax.

“We are trying to soften the impact of this [new property tax] upon Millcreek residents that I know don’t want any tax increase but they also love their police services. That [the new property tax] is subject to the council changing it,” Silvestrini said.

The mayor mentioned the costs of future property taxes will have to rise to meet the cost of the UPD contract since the taxes issued for the upcoming fiscal year are as low as possible to help accommodate the negative impacts of the pandemic and increased cost of living over time.

2022-23 is promising a well-funded police department with every month bringing a new member to highlight. l

Local churches pair together to bring Granite School District families food and clothing

s school ends, students anxiously anticipate summer festivities such as travel, camp and a much-earned break from academics. For the majority of students, it’s a period of major excitement.

However, for a sizable minority of students and families, the end of the year brings familiar discomfort and worries regarding food security.

Local churches, K2 the Church and Southeast Christian Church, are well aware of this struggle, which is why they have partnered together to create a food and clothing pantry spanning the summer months.

“The pantry is available for anyone who might find themselves in need this summer, struggling to put food on the table or struggling to purchase appropriate clothing for the summer months,” said a representative from the Southeast Christian Church who wished to remain anonymous. “We understand that this drive is especially important for children because once school concludes, suddenly a lot of these students are unable to benefit from lunch programs that kept them fed during the school year.”

The K2 and Southeast Christian Church food and clothing pantry come at an ideal time, as food banks and pantries across the nation often cite the summer months as the most difficult for a multitude of reasons. First and foremost, students who are at-risk or underprivileged often rely on their school to provide breakfast and lunch. When school concludes for the summer, these children can no longer easily obtain two of their daily meals.

Erica Sisto, a long-term employee of the Utah Food Bank spoke candidly about summer hunger and how the season is actually routinely the food bank’s most difficult.

“We never want to discourage people from volunteering because we appreciate anyone who chooses to volunteer their time and resources,” Sisto said. “But, truthfully, well, summer is tough because the demand for food is higher than any other season, mainly because children lack access to school-sanctioned food programs.

Historically, we get the least volume of donations during the summer which is arguably when children need them the very most.”

Sisto further explained why the fall and winter months tend to be the food bank’s most lucrative seasons for donations and volunteer work. The “giving season” marks a time in people’s lives where they’re actively thinking about how they can help the less fortunate.

“It makes a lot of sense. People feel generous during Thanksgiving and Christmas, and they want to give back. So, during those months we get a huge influx of individuals and groups looking to volunteer or donate in bulk. So much so that we tend to rely on the donations we receive during those end of the year months to help sustain us throughout the rest of the year. We always appreciate the public’s contributions, but especially during the summer when we need them the most,” Sisto said.

In addition to the general trend of summer hunger, there are other reasons why food and clothing drives are particularly important at this point in time. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the summer of 2021 was one of the hottest on record. If last year’s trends are to continue, it is imperative that families have access to nutritious food, hydration and appropriate clothing. Moreover, the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has forced the hand of families who have never required such services previously. Even as families begin to recover from the shock of losing employment, many people are still living with the consequences of losing their jobs or significant portions of their income.

“We’ve seen it happen where families who need assistance will not participate in [food and clothing drives] because they feel embarrassed or unsure if their specific situation warrants help,” said the Southeast Christian Church representative and congregate.

Granite School District took to its social media pages to encourage students and families to utilize the food and clothing drive, stating, “We highly encourage Granite School District families to take advantage of the monthly food pantry hosted by [K2 the Church and the Southeast Christian Church] during these difficult summer months. Summer marks a challenging point in time where we do not have the same resources to provide food for our students, which is why we are continually grateful for community-led food drives and initiatives to help fill in those blanks.”

If you are interested in participating in the food pantry or clothing closet, you can do so on June 11 or July 9. On both days, the event will last from 9 to 11 a.m. For the convenience of volunteers and recipients, the food pantry is a drive-up event. All you need to do to participate is bring a car to the location of the food drive and pop your trunk. The groceries will be placed in your car. If you are interested in browsing the clothing closet, it will also be available during pantry hours. All are welcome to participate, no questions asked. City honors 50 students with Mayor’s Star of Excellence Award

A

t the May 9 Millcreek City Council meeting, 50 high school scholars were honored by Mayor Jeff Silvestrini and the council. The juniors awarded with the Mayor’s Star of Excellence Award attend either Skyline, Olympus, or Cottonwood high schools. Each of the students recognized at this first-ever event have a cumulative grade point average of 3.962 or higher.

“We are very proud of these high achievers,” Silvestrini said. “The entire community acknowledges their outstanding scholarship, and they all have very bright futures ahead.”

The mayor thanked the students for their hard work and model citizenship. Silvestrini highlighted the Millcreek Youth Council’s “Best of State” title award since a portion of the students were also members of the youth council. The youths on the council promote better communications with residents and serve the community.

“It is really motivating for young people

to know that they are being recognized for their hard work,” said award recipient Grey Jensen from Skyline High School. “This award will give students something to strive for.”

School administrators have expressed concerns with how to get students back in the spirit of schooling and perhaps, more recognition for student achievements may be an answer. The Mayor’s Star of Excellence Award is an example of how city leaders can become more involved in the promotion of student success.

“I’m so glad to be a part of a wonderful city that recognizes the youth in our city,” said Preston Labrum, an award winner from Olympus High.

“As a recipient of this award, it reinforces the hard work I have put into my studies and motivates me to continue to show dedication,” added Esther Wilson from Skyline.

Hillcrest students share messages about resilience through film

I

t was a chance for secondary school filmmakers to share their stories through original films in Salt Lake County Health Department’s fourth annual film festival—and Anna Liu of Skyline High School took advantage of it to win first place in the upper division category.

Liu was awarded $350 for her film, “My Resilience Kit.” She also won second place in audience choice.

The winners were announced April 28 during a virtual screening. More than 40 entries were submitted.

“That was the most we have ever had,” said Julia Glade, Salt Lake County health educator and healthy communities coordinator. “The public can go to the Salt Lake County Health Department YouTube channel and view them.”

The theme of resilience was new this year after previously focusing on the dangers of youth e-cigarette use. Glade said it came about from listening to the youth.

“We value the youth voice, especially when it comes to learning how public health topics have an impact on them and their community,” she said. “The film festival is a terrific opportunity to motivate teens to continue engaging in these important conversations about their physical, mental and social health, especially after the last two years they’ve endured during the pandemic.”

Other winners include second-place upper division, Rebecca Lontop, Taylorsville High School, “Off;” and third-place upper division, Jesus Solano Cano, Taylorsville High, “Amigo Feliz.” First place in the lower division was Angel Jimenez, Glendale Middle, for “Social Emotional Health Solutions.”

Starting on July 1, 2022, the new pastor at Christ United Methodist Church - SLC will be Rev. Lisa Petty. For five years, Rev. Lisa has been the pastor of Montrose United Methodist Church in Colorado. Prior to that, she served as pastor of Rifle United Methodist Presbyterian Church in Rifle, Colorado. Rev. Lisa graduated from Iliff School of Theology with a Master of Divinity, received her Local Pastor License in January 2012, was commissioned as a Provisional Elder in June 2012, and became an Ordained Elder in June 2014. Her history includes extensive experience in youth and young adult ministries dating back to 1998.

Q: Rev. Lisa, what was the life pathway that led you to become a Methodist minister?

A: I grew up in Southern California with a United Methodist Pastor for a father. I have one older sister, one younger sister, and a younger brother who is an ordained UMC pastor and serves the people of Colorado Springs at St Paul UMC. I am also a fourth-generation Methodist pastor as my grandmother was one of the first women ordained a deacon in the Methodist Episcopal Church. After 10 years of denying my call to the ministry, and finally going back to school to finish an undergraduate degree, I moved to Denver to do my Master of Divinity in two and one-half years.

Sustainability and style at Millcreek Mercantile

O

ne might keep walking by the unassuming facade of Millcreek Mercantile, a curated vintage decor and home essentials store in the heart of Millcreek, until they pass the window and glance inside.

Inside the shop, located at 881 E. 3900 South, many treasures await. There’s a secret attic to explore and tables adorned with colored glass jars, candelabras, copper utensils and patterned blue and white china to look over.

There’s also furniture, salvaged doors, repurposed farm equipment and a 3-foot-tall red antique metal drink cooler that still works.

With the sustainability trend on the rise during the pandemic, antique and vintage stores have seen an uptick in business. Upon entering the small, concrete masonry store, you can expect to meet Melanie Sleight, the proprietor, and her dog, Chloe, busily unpacking items and moving inventory to replace sold items.

Sleight has a degree in business/interior design, and fell in love with the vintage salvage business growing up on a farm in Layton where she learned from her father to “waste not want not,” and to appreciate the value of repurposing and using what was available.

After working for George’s Salvage in Salt Lake City for seven years, Sleight decided it was time to venture out on her own, and Millcreek Mercantile was launched. “I think home decor should be affordable for people,” Sleight said. “And I love when pieces are salvaged and put back into historical homes.”

Young people with ecoconscious values have become a prized new market for sellers of antiques and collectibles at estate sales, stores and online, according to a 2021 article in the LATimes.

“If there is a bathroom remodel underway, consider a vintage mirror instead of a big box storebought one,” Sleight said.

“I would steer people away from trends to the classic pieces that will last longer,” Sleight said.

“But they will also be unique. No one else will have these items in their homes, they are one of a kind.”

Collectors Fairs found that the carbon footprint of a modern chest of drawers is 16 times higher than that of its antique equivalent.

“When you have options people need to think about what is already made and available and plan for their space in order to offset their carbon footprint,” Sleight said.

As for what makes antiques work, Sleight says to think about the things you enjoyed as a child, and at some point in the future, a new generation is going to be excited about those items.

Sleight has been collecting antiques for over 20 years, many of which are for sale in her store.

“There are many cookie-cutter homes in Utah, and if you can find something unique, it will really set your home apart,” Sleight said.

Sleight also sells new items, such as baskets and throw blankets, that are locally sourced and sustainably made.

Vintage and antique items cost less, are better quality, are available immediately, will last longer and add uniqueness and style to a home, according to Sleight. And with sustainability rising to the top of the priority list for consumers of all ages, a stop at the secret attic that is Millcreek Mercantile is a must. l

Water polo’s popularity on the rise in local clubs

T

he Millcreek area has seen a rise in popularity in swimming with clubs like Olympus Aquatics. What many residents don’t realize is that the sleeping giant of water polo is hatching from these same clubs.

Olympus and Skyline headline as two of the best water polo clubs in the state. Olympus is led by boys coach Shawn Stringham and girls coach Alexis Courtney. Skyline is led by girls coach Allison Fernandez and boys coach Brett Luch.

Other powerhouse programs like Kearns, Park City and Murray will jockey for positioning in the state water polo championships this month.

“I founded the water polo club from Olympus Aquatics in 2013,” coach Stringham said. “I’m also the men’s head coach for the Olympus Water Polo program within Olympus Aquatics. I also work as the Water Polo Club director for the entire program.”

While wearing different hats within the organization has kept him busy, Stringham remains as determined as ever to grow water polo within the state of Utah.

“The growth of water polo is really exciting in Utah,” Stringham said. “It’s getting national attention. They see the growth that this sport is having here. We are working to make this a sport in the UHSAA. The powers of USA Water Polo are watching Utah as a model for water polo growth. Olympus provides opportunities not only for Olympus kids but others in Utah.”

“We have new water polo clinics almost every week throughout the summer,” Stringham said. “Athletes join in starting with the 11-12-year-old range. We teach Splash Ball which teaches them swim safety skills and gets them into our program. Last year, we introduced 100 kids to Splash Ball. We want to get them excited about a safe way to experience our programs. We do weekly Splash Ball sessions throughout the summer.”

The growth of water polo has increased exponentially in Utah on the women’s side too.

“We’ve had a lot of years of growth,” Courtney said.

“Water polo is competitive and physical. It’s important to communicate and play together as a team. We need to play offense on a player and then defense. We need to do well individually and also work together as a team. We used to be combined with Skyline but then the teams were split. Several of my juniors and seniors split. One junior just started playing this year and the other girls are sophomores.”

Several girls have taken coach Courtney’s message to heart and stood out as team leaders.

“It took everyone to accomplish our goal in the tournament,” Courtney said. “Bella Faraone is an excellent goalie.

Elle Graham is an excellent center defender. Ava Ransom is a great driver and plays center driver. Other key contributors for our team include Megan Stringham, Ainsley Marsh, Julia Ransom and Brianna Petty.”

Jaydon Courtney, coach Courtney’s son, is a freshman at Olympus and competes for the boys 16U and 18U teams.

“My mom has been the most helpful person for my mental state that there is,” he said. “She’s there to calm me down and tell me what I can do better. She’s been my rock and helped with problems I’ve had with keeping my head level.

She played collegiate water polo at Slippery Rock University.”

Despite the high expectations that come with being the

son of a former collegiate water polo player, Jaydon Courtney strives to keep a light attitude.

“My main goal for high school is to have the most fun I can,” he said. “We won 16U and will hopefully compete for an 18U championship.”

Fellow Olympus teammate and sophomore Nick Oman feels that he has a unique talent that helps him compete with older players at the 18U level.

“For me speed and stamina is my greatest strength,” Oman said. “I can keep going longer than a bunch of people.

It helps when I’m going against bigger people. I put myself in positions where they can’t manhandle me.”

On the Skyline side, both the boys and girls are also near the top of water polo competition at every age group. Fernandez, the Skyline girls water polo coach, is pleased with how her upstart group performed.

“The majority of our girls had never played the sport until a year and a half ago,” Fernandez said. “In a short amount of time, they just placed third in their first 16U competition. They have put in hard work in such little time. They improved from girls that didn’t know how to play to placing in state.”

One of those girls that has improved quite a bit is Aubrey Hall. She is a senior at Skyline High school and will be playing for the club team at the University of Utah next year. She also hopes to referee water polo games.

“Being a referee gives you a whole new viewpoint of the sport,” Hall said. “One of the greatest water polo players that I met said you can’t blame the entire game on the referees unless you did everything perfectly and still lost.”

Hall is one of the leaders of a young 18U team that will have to work their way up in the upcoming tournament. They had some close losses this year that affected their seeding. On the boys side, the Skyline 16U team won every game except the championship game to Olympus.

“In water polo there is a combination of swimming, wrestling and treading water,” Skyline boys coach Luch said.

“There is strategy involved in trying to get in between the defender and the goal. The sport is a combination of basketball, hockey and lacrosse.”

Skyline has several talented players on the boys roster that have made a difference in their performance against state competition.

“Our biggest name in 18U would probably be Tom Diaz,” Luch said. “He is one of the best players in the state and has collegiate potential.”

Other notable players mentioned by Luch include Theo Swapp, Richard Heckmann, Sam Brooks, Mikey Hackett, Dillon Shaw and Stephen Mecham.l

A one-horse race

W

hen I was in eighth grade, I was elected to the class senate. In ninth grade, I was elected as a cheerleader. Did I deserve these titles?

Probably not. But I’d bribed fellow students with copious amounts of candy because that’s the American way.

After a series of decidedly terrible life choices, my scholastic career drove off the rails and I never ran for election again. When I turned 18, I registered to vote and I’ve cast a vote in every election since. I also respond to Twitter polls, fill out Amazon reviews and take surveys at the bottom of yard-long Kohl’s receipts.

Now that I’m a semi-functioning adult, it’s up to me to choose the right people to lead us into the future. Since the future is nuclear bomb-shaped, we won’t need leaders much longer, but elections are important, at least until that mushroom cloud rises over the mountains.

Here’s why voting is funny. You’ll get a kick out of this. When I vote for new leadership or more progressive ideas, the person/issue I’m voting for rarely wins. Why? Because I live in conservative Utah.

After being mansplained to since birth, I understand my female brain can’t comprehend the problems involved with running the state. Like, how can our leaders make money if we don’t let them relocate a prison across the valley so they can develop prime property? How can the state generate revenue on alcohol without ridiculous licensing fees and policies? How can we possibly treat educators, minorities, or uteruses with respect, without creating laws to rein them in?

And then they have the gall to say, vote in the leaders you want. How? Tell me how and I’ll do it! Phew. I must be off my anti-hysterical meds.

If I learned anything from running for office in junior high, it’s that voters will follow the candy. But as a female voter in Utah, I’m tired of the sugary-sweet, syrupy condescension.
