MUNDI PROJECT PROVIDING PIANO ACCESS TO UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES

T

he Mundi Project was founded in 2006 by Hana Janatova to enrich the lives of those in the community by providing access to pianos. The mission of The Mundi Project is to actively break down socioeconomic and generational barriers by providing quality music experiences for all.

Dr. Ruby Chou, the executive director of The Mundi Project, was excited to talk about the local organization as it celebrates it’s 15th anniversary this year.

“The Mundi Project operates three main music programs for underserved communities of Utah— Harmony Hub, Mundi Live, and Piano Bank,” Chou explained. “As Mundi Project grows, we envision using musical learning as a conduit to create meaningful societal change. Our desire is to increase access to classes, performances, and instruments across the socioeconomic and generational spectrums.”

Chou joined The Mundi Project three years ago and has had numerous events and experiences with the organization since joining the team. Her favorite memory was launching their intergenerational program, she said.

“I completed research studies and a dissertation on intergenerational learning in the music classroom and I wanted to bring this type of learning to the community that I grew up in,” she said. “I decided to accept the executive director position in 2018 because of this very reason. In 2019, we launched our first intergenerational program at Neighborhood House where we brought “kidfriends” and “grandfriends” together to learn and explore music. Skyline Eagles soaring high after another dominating year of golf

N

early a year ago, the men’s golf team at Skyline High School made a statement by winning a national team championship.

One boys state title and girls region title later, the program still looks like the team to beat in 5A. Coach Kenneth James was pleased overall with the performance of his teams this year at the state tournament in Rose Park in Salt Lake City. While there is always room for improvement, he felt they made good strides this year.

“The boys did well,” Coach James said.

“The girls did well too. I would like to have performed better at state but they played well.”

The girls placed fourth overall at state this spring after winning a region title. James could be seen rocking Skyline colors in his Loudmouth John Daly outfit. The lucky clothes seemed to pay off for his team.

James and the sport of golf have a long history.

“When I was a freshman in college, I took a golf course,” James said. “I then took an intermediate course and then an advanced one. It’s been non-stop ever since.”

This love for the game led James to eventually coach golf for both the girls team and eventually boys. He started coaching the girls team about 14 years ago when the sport was first introduced to the UHSAA. It’s played in the spring so he was able to coach girls golf as well as football in the fall. Eventually, James was offered a job to coach boys golf but turned it down at first since the football team was doing well. About a year and a half later, James realized he was getting a little burned out with football and went all in on coaching golf.

That decision has certainly paid off. The girls tied for fourth at state and are steadily improving. Skyline freshman Ashley Lam took third at state so she won first-team all-state honors. Gwen Poelman placed in the top 20 so she will likely take home an honorable mention when the awards are handed out. Other top performers on the girls team include Avery Kraatz and Tegan Halloran. Claire Keller and Laurel Iorg rounded out the varsity team.

“The strength of the girls golf team is the youth.” James said. “We had six freshman girls earn a varsity letter. Only one of the girls who graduated was on varsity. We hope to be good enough to give Timpview a challenge in the future.”

The Thunderbirds are the undisputed champions of 5A girls golf. They won the team state championship and nobody else was close. Three of their top golfers finished in the top four. It won’t be easy, but the future looks promising for the Lady Eagles golfers.

Coaching the girls golf and boys golf each present different challenges. Throughout his tenure, James has learned to coach

each group more effectively.

“The girls like to get their reps in,” James said. “The boys like to make everything a competition. We have chipping and putting competitions since that is what keeps them motivated.”

It is also important to build team chemistry. James admitted that the girls do better at that since they are more talkative on the course. The boys don’t talk as much out there. They are a little more stoic and not as chatty.

“The varsity golfers on the boys team are better golfers than I am,” James said.

“With the boys I focus on helping them avoid mental mistakes. With the girls I focus more on strategy.”

The boys are mad when they shoot over par. That makes it even more imperative for James to follow up and ask where they are falling short if they don’t meet this challenging benchmark.

“It’s hard to be perfect,” James said.

“The boys push each other and try to stay loose. This hopefully helps them handle pressure. The girls are also involved in so many things. They have hard classes along with jobs or internships. This makes it tricky in the spring with tests at the end of the year. The parental and community sport is important” While the Skyline golf program has plenty to be proud about to date, they aren’t satisfied. They are still looking to accomplish their team and individual goals. They always want to win region and state so they set benchmarks to get there.

“We try to do drills that simulate pressure,” James said. “Golf is all about pressure.

They have to hit people watching, and make the four to six foot putts when it matters.”

Skyline also focuses a great amount on chipping. The main goal for them is to chip onto the green so they don’t waste too many strokes on that. Whether it’s a short or midrange shot, it’s important to be able to master this.

“The boys go out and play all the time,” James said. “Getting girls to play more golf is the most important thing. In the offseason it’s important to get them to play on a regular basis.”

The golfers at Skyline are encouraged to get a card that allows them to play at just about any course in the state for just five dollars if they walk. This is also a great way to get some exercise.

The boys golf team traveled to Pinehurst last summer. Coaches were not allowed to attend, due to pandemic restrictions. Parents of these players accompanied them. Instead of focusing on individual success, their focus as a team is what helped them win the championship.

is BYU commit Tyson Shelley. He set the all-time state record for the lowest score after two days. He also helped the team set a record for best combined score of -35. The other Division I commit is Simon Kwon. He has decided to continue his education and golf career at the University of California, Berkeley.

Some other golfers are good enough to play at the next level, but have decided to focus on the academic aspect of college. A great example of that is Joseph Kim. He is one of the more talented golfers on the team.

However, he has an academic scholarship to Cal Poly he will focus on instead. Peter Kim,

Joseph’s brother, is also a talented player for the Skyline team.

Shawn Lam is another talented varsity player who earned second team all-state honors. He finished with a -1 on the meet which was good enough to be tied for 10th on the day. He was among the top 15 best golfers in 5A. It was a great year for both programs in the middle of the pandemic. As restrictions start to lift, the Eagles will hope to continue lifting their game. James has helped build a program with not only region aspirations, but state and possibly national aspirations as well. l

Granite District encourages public comment at board meetings with prior sign up

T

he proceedings of a May 4 Granite School District Board of Education meeting made local headlines when a group of attendees wanted to talk about the mask mandate. Board meetings are open to the public; the board asks that people who want to contribute sign up ahead of time.

The district’s website states: “[We] hold public meetings once or twice monthly to…conduct business. Citizens are welcome to speak in a Board of Education meeting by contacting the communications office at 385-646-4529 to register for a comment time.”

Ben Horsley, communications director for GSD, was at the meeting. He said tensions in the meeting escalated when people who hadn’t signed up wanted to speak.

Video footage of the meeting shows interruptions, shouting and a declaration that the elected board was dismissed and new board members were being appointed on the spot.

“When it became clear that the board was not going to be able to conduct its business, the meeting was adjourned.

[Thirty to 40 anti-mask] protesters remained…for a short time,” Horsley wrote in a social media post.

Horsley said the procedures in place for board meetings allow GSD to conduct necessary business while also hearing from members of the public. Adjourning meant the board did not get to discuss everything on the agenda.

“The board allows the first three patrons to sign up for non-agenda items at each general board meeting (monthly).

People can visit our website and fill out some contact information by noon the day of the meeting,” Horsley said.

GSD’s website, www.graniteschools.org/board, has information on current board members, agendas, yearly meeting schedules, how to sign up to comment and the minutes of previous meetings.

“Those who wish to sign up for a specific agenda item can sign up to speak to those items as well. The same process applies,” Horsley said.

Horsley said even during the tightest days of pandemic restrictions, the board wanted to include the public. The June 16, 2020 meeting was streamed live and a sign up for residents was offered. The minutes for that meeting state “Citizen Participation: None,” meaning no one signed up to comment.

This year, the Jan. 5 and March 2 meetings also had no citizen participation. The bulk of April meetings were devoted to new staffing appointments. The Feb. 2 meeting had one participant from Taylorsville High—a student named Caitlin Bone.

Bone followed the meeting protocols for non-agenda comments. She introduced ideas for how students could safely participate in school dances. Her comments were covered by several local news sources, and many schools have safely held proms and other activities this spring.

Horsley said the three slots for the May 4 meeting were full and “masks were not on the agenda. The three individuals who [commented on other non-agenda items] had signed up in advance of the meeting.”

Members of the public who participate in meetings can expect to be heard, but some things are out of the board’s jurisdiction. Horsley said the mask mandate was a statewide health order and not something the district had the authority to repeal.

As it turned out, those frustrated by the mask mandate needed only wait a few days. On May 13, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox issued a statement repealing the mandate for the last week of school.

“While masks are still recommended and individuals may still choose to wear a mask, they will not be required for the last week of the school year (starting June 1),” Horsley said.

All testing protocols for GSD also end on that date.

Masks will not be required for summer programs or the new school year in the fall, “unless a new statewide order is initiated.”

Board meetings continue over the summer and are scheduled for June 15, July 6 and Aug. 3. Agendas are available on the website. Anyone wishing to address the board for agenda or non-agenda items should register 24 hours in advance by calling 385-646-4529, or completing the “Comment Sign-up Form” on the website. l

GSD teachers awarded big check bonuses

tarting on April 22 at Olene Walker Elementary School and going to three other locations the following days, selected teachers were awarded a $5,000 bonus. The bonuses were possible because of passing HB 212 in the 2016 Legislative session.

The bill made available special $5,000 bonuses for teachers with high median growth percentiles (MGP) who teach in schools with high student poverty levels. These teachers are in the top 5% of Utah.

“The goal of the legislation is to reduce teacher turnover at high poverty schools and attract and retain teachers whose classroom instruction has proven to be effective in helping students grow academically,” according to a Granite School District (GSD) press release.

Granite District gets new superintendent

n April 26, Karyn Winder, president of the Granite Board of Education, introduced Richard Nye as the new Granite School District (GSD) Superintendent.

Martin Bates, who served as superintendent for more than a decade, announced his retirement in January. Nye will assume his new role on July 1.

“Upon the announcement of Dr. Martin Bates’ retirement, we as the Board of Education asked our students, staff and parents what leadership qualities they would like to see in the incoming superintendent,” Winder said. “Dr. Nye embodies those qualities, and we look forward to welcoming him to Granite School District.”

Currently, Nye is the Ogden School District Superintendent. He has served in that position since 2017.

Background

Nye started his educator career as a science teacher at Rocky Mountain Junior High in the Weber School District in 2001.

He moved into administration in 2001 in the Peoria Unified School District in Arizona. Nye returned to Utah in 2005, working at the Utah State University and the Utah State Board of Education. He joined the Ogden School District Executive Team in 2012.

Nye graduated with a bachelor’s in history with a minor in zoology from Weber State University in 2000. He earned two master’s in education from Arizona State University in education administration and supervision and at Weber State University in curriculum and instruction. Nye worked on both master’s during the same time from 2001 to 2005. He earned a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from Utah State University in 2011. He continued his education with a fellowship from The Board Academy and a Certificate in Education Finance from Georgetown University in 2020.

Nye addressed the following issues:

GSD geographical diversity, racial diversity and economic diversity

“Personalized education opportunities are not a one size fits all endeavor,” Nye said. “As we think of the different school and the communities they reside in, we ask are they tailored to the specific and unique opportunities of that area and address those specific needs of the area, and then education becomes a fixture in the community and provides pathways for the students to be successful regardless of where they might live.”

Fundamental education changes because of COVID-19

“Going back to the concept of personalized learning allowing students and their families to customize what that educational experience is even more. For some students, a classroom setting works best. For

others, a different model. What COVID has done for education has provided schools and school systems with an opportunity to think about how they personalized education for the students and their families.”

He also said, “It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. I would say COVID has made necessity the mother of acceleration as education moves more into the digital age.”

Educational philosophy

“I know that all children can succeed.

There is not a child anywhere that doesn’t have the ability with the right support within a system that meets their needs who can’t achieve at high levels.”

He continued, “When I think of educational philosophy, I think of three parts.

First, academically. What does the child need to learn, and what opportunities are available for them to personalize their experience? Secondly is social and emotional learning. As we think about what does it mean for a child to be emotionally self-regulated and (have) self-efficacy. To be able to thrive on a social-emotional level. The third is talent development of teachers and staff, meaning we cannot meet the needs of students without giving the resources and support to those who have stewardship of meeting the needs of students.”

Message to teachers and staff

“I am so grateful for who they are and how they bring their best self to work every day. They do it because they love children.

My message to educators is one of appreciation, knowing what it means to show up in the classroom and build relationships with students and colleagues. As far as our educators go, the teachers are the heart and soul of education. For the staff, we have supported them in that role and very much in the part of educators who are part of a much larger system that we all move in the same direction creating the conditions for students to succeed. Appreciation and hope as we move together, they will be successful in their space. And be able to accomplish the purposes of why they went into education.”

“Granite has been a leader in the state in many different areas,” Nye said. “The commitment to students is evident. It’s always impressed me that the deep-down, fundamental commitment is to improve the conditions for students. As we consider what the future looks like in Granite—it’s positive. There are opportunities that exist to improve or refine current practices and to build on successes. The prospect is exciting to me.”

n April 26, Gov. Spencer Cox gathered with lawmakers, students, and representatives from Western Governor’s Union to sign HB 328, a bill from the most recent legislative session aimed to help adult learners finish their degrees.

HB 328, or the Adult Learners Grant Program, offers financial aid to eligible students over 26 seeking to finish a degree or certificate online. Currently, there are more than 370,000 Utahns with some Postsecondary education credits but no degree or certificate. This bill focuses on removing financial barriers to allow such students to finish their program and enter the workforce.

Since this demographic makes up most of WGU’s students, it’s only fitting the institution wholeheartedly supported the bill. WGU pledged $1 million in scholarships to support the grant program and hosted an online panel discussing the new legislation before the ceremonial signing.

During the panel, WGU student Israel Sanchez spoke about his experience as an older student returning to school to complete his degree.

Sanchez has been chipping away at his bachelor’s for years. Speaking to the panel of lawmakers and educators, he said he’d taken

classes in everything from “Real estate classes to psychology classes to culinary arts, and I feel like I have a doctorate in randomness I’ve been working at this so long.”

But, those credits hadn’t yet amounted to a bachelor’s. After taking a break for some time, Sanchez decided he wanted to go back and finish his degree. By that point, his life was too busy to attend school in the typical sense.

At 33, he had a family to think about and a full-time job. Driving to campus and sitting through lectures wasn’t an option.

Instead, he signed up for WGU’s online program. Thanks to the program’s flexibility, he’ll be graduating in a year with his degree in healthcare administration. And, he told the panel that because he was able to keep his fulltime employment, he and his wife have paid off their student loans, and he’s looking forward to being debt-free upon graduation.

Sponsor of HB 328, Representative Lowry Snow (R-St. George), explained that this is precisely why the bill specifically targeted online learning. Because a majority of these adult students have full-time jobs, family, and other commitments, it’s difficult for them to work with a typical campus schedule. On top of that, many of them live in rural areas where the commute to campus alone would be a huge

time commitment.

By making online programs more affordable, they hope to provide better access for these students. Through more flexible programs, anyone who can get online can finish their program according to their own schedule.

“They can work on their degree after

the children have gone to bed, or during the weekends, or any of their off time,” Snow said.

“This is just the beginning. When we see the outcome that is going to be generated from Israel and others like him, I think it’s going to catch on.” l

f you needed another sign that things were returning to normal, here’s a good one: the Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation outdoor pools opened Memorial Day weekend! The pools are scattered throughout the county and will stay open through the summer.

The county advises patrons to check their website at www. slco.org for updates on COVID restrictions including mask requirements. In general, those who are fully vaccinated do not need to wear masks.

Most of the pools have fun features like lap lanes, leisure areas, zero-depth entry, ADA accessibility, kids play areas, diving boards, sunbathing areas or slides.

All have lifeguards on duty during operating hours.

Opening hours, times and prices differ slightly for each location, so it’s wise to call ahead.

And for an extra fun and exclusive event, many of the pools are available after hours to rent for private parties.

School counselors encourage 1, 2, 4, or more years of college

I

n recent years, fewer high school graduates have attended college, but high school counselors say there are still great opportunities outside of a four-year institution.

Recent numbers published by Education Week found a 6.8 percent drop in Fall 2020 college enrollments from the previous years. This significant jump is most likely a result of the pandemic. Many high school students have found it hard to keep up with coursework with online learning and other changes to their education.

Family job losses and financial struggles have put additional roadblocks between students and college.

However, the decline in college enrollments is not a new trend. According to the National Student Clearinghouse, the rate of students enrolling in college has been slowly declining over the last decade.

There are several reasons students may be opting out of attending a traditional four-year institute. Many can’t afford it and are discouraged by the prospect of student loan debt. Others don’t see formal schooling as a good fit. High school counselors are well aware of these challenges and hope to help students find a suitable path.

“Not everyone is cut out for the traditional four-year college experience, and there is no need for them to pursue that. There are plenty of great jobs available for students in skilled labor, IT, composites, etc. The rise of college tuition is getting out of hand, and students and parents see this,” Na-

than Brannon, a counselor at Olympus High School, told the City Journals.

With that in mind, Brannon and other counselors throughout the Granite School District have been working to implement individualized career plans for each student. While many students may not be interested in a traditional college, that doesn’t mean the counselors can’t help them find a program that will suit their strengths and goals.

Brian Barnum, a counselor at Kearns High, explained why there’s been a state initiative to view any post-secondary education as an equally viable option, whether it’s a one, two, or fouryear program.

there has really been a huge push for students to see college as one, two, four, or more. With that, as counselors, we have had a bigger push for students to get any post-secondary education that may benefit their future career goals rather than continuously pushing all students to go to a four-year school,” Barnum said. “A four-year school is not suited for everyone and for many students is not the best path to get students where they want to go.”

While a four-year degree is often seen as the most traditional route after high school, the counselors agreed that wasn’t the right choice for many students. That’s especially true when there are so many different trades and careers available.

“There are just so many options nowadays for students. We have students that will go to traditional college, we have internships, we have apprenticeships, we have students that want to go right into a career, and all of those are great,” said Sara Po’uha, counseling department chair at Taylorsville High School.

According to Po’uha, that’s why it’s so essential for them to meet with each student individually. That way, they can understand what’s important to them and cater their post-high school planning to the student. Whether students want to get a certificate, do an apprenticeship program, go straight into a trade, or get a degree, the school counselors work to get them all the resources and information to make their goals a reality. l

Salt Lake County marks 75 years of Parks and Recreation with tree planting

eighbors, elected officials, and community members joined together on a sunny day to kickoff a summer-long celebration at Evergreen Park May 14. Mayor of Salt Lake County, Jenny Wilson recognized Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation’s 75th birthday. Evergreen Park was chosen because it was the first in what is now over 100 park spaces across the valley managed

by Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation. The acquisition of Evergreen Park 75 years ago on May 11, 1946 launched what has now grown into one of the largest parks, trails, recreation, and open space management organizations in the region. Evergreen Park, located at 2230 E. 3425 South, is a beloved jewel of the community that had many members in attendance reminiscing about their childhoods.

Wilson had fond memories of playing at Evergreen Park. She said, “I think the 75-year history of Parks and Recreation is to be noted. I have a particular love of this park because I remembered it from my childhood. I mentioned the pumpkin Cinderella-esque playground round item, and I remember when we came in here to update the park with the building of the community rec center, there was a lot of love for this park but also for that sculpture.”

Jeff Silvestrini, mayor of Millcreek, said, “The pumpkin is really beautiful, and it has a lot of memories for people that grew up in this park like Mayor Wilson, and for our kids who still play on it.”

the collaboration between Ivory Homes, Tree Utah, Salt Lake County Park and Recreation, and the county started in fall 2020 after a major windstorm. May said, “Ivory homes, to help the community address the loss of numerous trees, the replanting efforts began. We also actually planted a bunch of trees with the Jordan River Commission in Millcreek on the Jordan River this spring with students from major high schools as well.”

Silvestrini added, “I just think that this is a terrific public-private partnership that we have great private sponsors with Ivory and others and Tree Utah and the county. It’s really nice to see us working together on something that’s worthwhile that not only beautifies this park and replaces some of the trees that were taken by the…storm, but it helps with air quality, it helps with keeping our environment cooler, it helps with climate, it’s really important work.”

May said, “I was doing a walk-thru last week and noticed there wasn’t a single evergreen in Evergreen Park, and I wanted to make sure we planted evergreens.” Silvestrini added, “It’s Evergreen Avenue, that’s where it got its name from.” Wilson said, “This is a great small park, and one of the jewels in the county park system. It’s just great to be here on the 75th anniversary in a great community, in a park that’s quite loved.”

ne year after the economic recession caused by the coronavirus pandemic began, Utah’s economy has emerged as one of the strongest in the nation. Utah’s unemployment rate in April was 2.8%, down from 2.9% in March and nearly as low as it was before the pandemic.

Utah also has the second-highest job growth in the nation, ticking up 2.5% in the last 24 months. This is just behind Idaho’s job growth of 3.9% in the same time period. In fact, Utah and Idaho are the only two states that have added jobs in the last two years. Utah added 35,600 jobs over the past two years, with professional and business services (+15,700) leading the growth. Other sectors that saw notable gains were construction (+11,900); trade, transportation and utilities (+9,800); financial activities (+8,800); and manufacturing (+6,900).

However, the government (-10,500); leisure and hospitality (-7,600); and natural resources (-1,400) sectors have all lost jobs in the past 24 months.

While the strong job market and low unemployment are very positive for Utah, our state is once again struggling with a labor shortage. Simply put, there are not enough people in the Utah labor force to meet demand for workers. If this continues for too long, it could constrain potential economic growth, especially for smaller companies that must compete with larger employers for these workers.

Skyline boys volleyball best in state

T

hree years ago, the Skyline High boys volleyball squad lost a heartbreaking three-set match in the state championship.

This year, the Eagles were back again playing a three-setter and this time the title was theirs, winning 23-25, 25-20, 15-9 over Springville May 15 at Wasatch High School.

“It was so awesome to see the amount of time and effort the team put in and to watch it pay off for the guys,” said head coach Josh Henderson, who is in his seventh year at Skyline. “This year’s team is the most complete team I’ve coached at Skyline. Every position was strong on both offense and defense.”

Senior captain Quade Sorenson has had his sights set on a state title since he joined the Eagles program six years ago. “It was the most amazing feeling to finally win state,” he said. “In our final game, everything just clicked. Every single player on our team had a very key role. We played as a team, and even after dropping our first set, we came back to win it all.”

Fellow senior captain Jackson Price called the win “bittersweet.” “It was sweet to see all of our hard work come together and perform, but also bitter to think it’s the last time we’ll play together,” he said.

The Eagles defeated Spanish Fork,

Bingham and Olympus to reach the championship match.

“During our run to the championship we really relied on the serve, receive and hitting abilities of our outside hitters Price Filo and Jr Seiuli,” Henderson said. “However, it didn’t matter who was set, every one of our players was a threat and could put the ball away. As good as our hitting was, our blocks were just as imposing.”

Sorenson also noted the energy the team had throughout the tournament which made Skyline “unstoppable” while Price felt the team was able to be successful by “playing simple and smart.”

Also on the 13-1 Eagles squad were senior outside hitter Kadius Fuimaono, senior libero Steven Vaenuku, senior middle blocker/opposite Robert Bryson, junior middle blocker Nick Allen, junior libero Kolton Rudd, freshman setter Kai Sorenson and freshman middle blocker Aidan Reyes. l

our state, Governor Spencer Cox recently discontinued Utah’s participation in those earlier mentioned federal unemployment subsidies. This was done, in part, to combat what are called “perverse incentives,” meaning incentives that attempt to solve a problem but actually prolong or worsen the problems they are meant to solve. In this case, federal unemployment subsidies were intended to help those who could not find employment, but by continuing these benefits in good economic times, we would be disincentivizing those who are unemployed from finding gainful employment in a strong job market. We want government to avoid perverse incentives, and instead encourage people to find a long-term path to success.

There are certainly extenuating circumstances that make it difficult for people to work, but for those who can work, please know that there are plenty of people hiring and you are most certainly wanted! There is great satisfaction in successfully providing for oneself and one’s family, but when someone falls upon hard times, shortterm government assistance can be helpful to get residents back on their feet. Before COVID, when the hubbie and I used to travel, I’d book us in places that provided breakfast, because I love me a good breakfast buffet.

At one hotel, the breakfast bar offered freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and I couldn’t resist. I don’t usually drink fruit juice because it has so much sugar, which is hilarious because I have no problem downing an entire box of Milk Duds.

Anyway. I poured myself a cup of beautiful, pink grapefruit juice and was walking back to our table when a herd of unruly children came dashing around the corner and crashed into me, spilling grapefruit juice all over my shirt and the floor.

I stood there dripping and waiting for an apology that never came. The monsters ran past me to fill their plates with bacon. I eyed them scornfully, poured more juice and put on my Hat of Judgement.

What kind of mother lets her kids douse perfect strangers with grapefruit juice? What heathen had failed to teach these kids manners?

I got back to my table and told my husband to move so I could take his seat because he had a better view of the dining room. I needed to see the parents of these miscreants and judge them accordingly.

doesn’t like to cause trouble. “Perhaps you’re being a bit harsh.”

“Shut up, brain. I’m busy.”

Instead of shutting up, my brain brought up a memory of my daughters. We were at an all-you-can-eat-buffet and the girls were not sitting like civilized humans. They were fighting, dropping food all over the floor, running back for seconds and thirds, and taking every single brownie from the dessert bar.

They were animals. And I just sat there, so happy for the break from making dinner.

I’d been that mom I was judging. My daughters had often run amok. If I’d had a cell phone when my kids were little, I would have been on that phone all the damn time. I slowly removed my Hat of Judgement and reevaluated the current situation.

I turned to my husband and said, “It’s just juice. They’re just kids. She’s just a mom.”

He didn’t know what I was talking about, but he chewed his bacon, nodded, and said, “That’s good.”

Suddenly, I was teary-eyed and felt a camaraderie with this mother. She was in the trenches, doing her very best. Aren’t we all?

The more I practice dropping judgement, the easier my life is. It’s exhausting calling out everyone’s behavior. There are better ways to spend my time, like drinking fresh grapefruit juice and remembering when my kids were wild animals.

he Mundi Project was founded in 2006 by Hana Janatova to enrich the lives of those in the community by providing access to pianos. The mission of The Mundi Project is to actively break down socioeconomic and generational barriers by providing quality music experiences for all.

Dr. Ruby Chou, the executive director of The Mundi Project, was excited to talk about the local organization as it celebrates it’s 15th anniversary this year.

“The Mundi Project operates three main music programs for underserved communities of Utah— Harmony Hub, Mundi Live, and Piano Bank,” Chou explained. “As Mundi Project grows, we envision using musical learning as a conduit to create meaningful societal change. Our desire is to increase access to classes, performances, and instruments across the socioeconomic and generational spectrums.”

Chou joined The Mundi Project three years ago and has had numerous events and experiences with the organization since joining the team. Her favorite memory was launching their intergenerational program, she said.

“I completed research studies and a dissertation on intergenerational learning in the music classroom and I wanted to bring this type of learning to the community that I grew up in,” she said. “I decided to accept the executive director position in 2018 because of this very reason. In 2019, we launched our first intergenerational program at Neighborhood House where we brought “kidfriends” and “grandfriends” together to learn and explore music.
