EAGLES STILL CONTENDING WITH WHOLE NEW TEAM

E

ntering the season with zero returning starters and eight departed seniors, you could forgive the Skyline girls basketball team for needing time to gel. Throw in an offseason pandemic and an almost entirely new coaching staff and you might even start to lower expectations.

Not for this team.

With five new starters and only a few who played varsity last year, the Eagles went 5-1 in preseason before starting region 5-1 as well. At press deadline, they were 10-2, tied for first in region and No. 5 in the RPI. “I knew we had a talented team,” said head coach Sam White, now in his third year leading the program. “But I just figured with lack of practice and time to get to know each other…I didn’t know how we were going to mesh, but we came out really strong.”

The team’s offseason didn’t go as planned. Its banquet last year happened on a Monday in March, that Friday the schools shut down, eventually for the rest of the school year.

Its spring league was canceled. The summer camp at Dixie St., a time the girls rely on to build camaraderie, was also canceled. Open gyms in the summer were limited to primarily skill work. Besides White, the team also had a whole new coaching staff as well, one that includes hall of famer Natalie Williams.

The girls were able play in a fall league to give them a starting point, but then the opening of the season was delayed two weeks. For senior captains Grace Marsh and Maddie Bell, Sophomore Tina Njike is on a tear this season averaging a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds per game. Njike even had a four game stretch where she averaged 12 blocks per game and had three triple doubles this year that included blocks. Resorts enjoy strong business while water experts monitor worsening drought

elow normal snowpack totals this winter have contributed to worsening drought conditions and concern for water in an already parched state. So far this season, the effects of Utah’s drought conditions have been mixed. While water resource experts have raised red flags about the severity of the state’s drought conditions, ski resorts have reported a strong start to the season.

“As expected, demand has been high,” said Paul Marshall, director of communications with Ski Utah. “Visits are better than expected.”

Ski resorts throughout the state have reported strong seasons in terms of skier turnout, despite COVID-related safety measures.

Below-average snowfall has led to reduced snowpack totals and fewer snow days, but that has not had a significant impact on the ski industry early in the season.

The story is different for Utah’s water supply.

“Everything is sort of hurting right now, and we’re looking for some more snow kind of urgently at this point,” said Jordan Clayton, data collection officer with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), in a December presentation to the Board of Water Resources. “We’ve really received a dismal amount of precipitation over the last 12 months, and it’s getting frankly kind of frightening.”

Unless that pattern changes, well-below average snowpack will lead to reduced runoff, even drier soils, and lower reservoir levels.

“Reservoirs are suffering,” Clayton said.

The agency’s maps of Utah showed a red swath of drought covering most of the state.

Clayton stated that, while it is statistically possible that conditions could change and trend toward a normal snowpack for the year, Utah has a lot of ground to make up to rejuvenate its water stores. Persistent dry conditions have affected more than just the annual

snowpack and reservoir levels. The state’s soils are also parched.

“The fact that we have such extremely dry soils is going to affect the efficiency of our runoffs in the spring,” Clayton said in his presentation to the Board of Water Resources. “We’re going to lose a lot of that snowmelt runoff to our watershed before we can start filling our reservoirs. What that really

While low snowpack totals will likely have a significant impact on Utah’s water situation come spring and summer, skiers have made the most of the snow that has fallen.

“We definitely have had a demand for skiing,” said Andria Huskinson, communications manager for Alta Ski Area. “The skiing is still great out there. The snow quality is holding up.” Huskinson said that by mid-January, the resort area had received nearly 140 inches of snowfall.

Just down the canyon, skiing has held up at Snowbird as well. “With 138 inches of snowfall this season to date, accompanied by cold temperatures, we are thankful to have the entire mountain open at Snowbird right now,” said Sarah Sherman, communications manager at Snowbird. “That being said, everyone is eager to have more powder days, soon.”

Even in Southern Utah, where drought conditions have been even worse than along the Wasatch, skiing has been strong so far this season. “Business levels have been surprisingly good,” said Brian Head Public Relations Coordinator Mark Wilder. “Lack of snow hasn’t kept people from coming. We were more worried about the COVID situation than the snow situation.”

During the first few months of the season, concerns about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and necessary safety policies have concerned resorts more than snow levels. “Due to ongoing and effective efforts, mask compliance at Utah resorts has been very good,” said Ski Utah’s Marshall.

“Lower than average snowfall has hampered visitation, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Overall, resorts fared better than ex-

As in communities everywhere, skiers seem to have adjusted to COVID-related protocols, which has helped resorts to a strong start to the season. “Our guests have been very understanding about our community well-being standards, including wearing masks,” said Sarah Huey, communications manager at Solitude Mountain Resort.

Officials address residents’ questions regarding crime, training and ‘resign hopping’

illcreek held their city’s second Policing Town Hall virtually and it took place under the direction of a panel of members.

Millcreek residents raised many questions since the unrest that took place last summer after the death of George Floyd resulting in the formation of the panel that includes Millcreek Mayor Jeff Silvestrini and Millcreek City Councilmembers together with leadership from the Unified Police Department, including Sheriff Rosie Rivera, Chief of Police Jason Mazaran, Undersheriff Jake Peterson, Millcreek Precinct Chief Steve DeBry, and Millcreek Lieutenant Chris Petty-Brown.

Questions from residents covered topics ranging from what constitutes a crime, nonviolent crime importance, identifying resisting arrest and police brutality.

Some of the tougher questions raised by residents involved two issues: What are current hiring standards and plans in addressing problem officers before they can engage in what Silvestrini called “resign hopping.” The procedure involves an officer willingly making a transfer to another precinct in the hopes of avoiding disciplinary issues currently pending at their current department.

Continued from front page “This year was, ‘OK here’s tryouts, here’s practice, go!’” Marsh said.

She had to take “every second” she could to get to know her teammates. Typically in years past that meant going to see a movie or have dinner at someone’s house. So they had to find other ways, like sitting 6 feet apart at a park with their own dinners.

“Obviously we can do that under normal circumstances but his year everything’s just so different so we had to make the best of it,” Marsh said.

Marsh and Bell, the only two seniors on the roster, attributed the team’s early success to a trust in each other, knowing they have the talent, but it means nothing without the team.

“This is one of the least selfish teams I’ve ever played with,” Bell said. “That’s been great for us this season.”

And it’s a season based on a new cast of characters, with Bell, Marsh and sophomore Tina Njike as a few of the only returning contributors. Add in four new freshmen getting playing time and the roster has a different look. While they relied on speedy guards, three-point shooting and an inside presence a year ago, Bell said they have a different talent this year. The girls may employ the same style of play, but with a “really dominant post” player in Njike, Bell said they can adjust to incorporate her more.

White said he knew Marsh would be

ready, that Bell would step up, but Njike made “the biggest leap.”

“I don’t think anyone in the state has had the improvement she’s had,” he said. “She’s come back a different player, worked with a trainer and Natalie [Williams] and her club team. She’s just gone to another level, it’s been fun to see.”

That level means averaging a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds per game. She’s had three games with a triple-double that included blocks. She even had a four-game stretch where she averaged 12 blocks per game.

“She’s not only doing stuff on the offensive end, she’s making it hard for them on defense too,” White said.

Though White is aware teams will probably double and triple team her, doing so would come at the peril of open three-point shooters, who are starting to find their groove.

Two of those shooters are White’s senior captains. “[Marsh and Bell] have been phenomenal senior leaders, they’re great captains, they’ve gone above and beyond,” he said, noting their high grade point averages and the tone they set for the rest of the team.

Anyway you view this season though, comes through a COVID lens. The varsity team elected to do all distance learning to limit chances of quarantine. The team’s only had four or five positives, but those were during the summer and fall, according to

White. “Been lucky in that sense.”

“I’m just proud of the girls, they’ve been putting in the work and dealing with adversity and everything that comes along with this season,” he said.

Considering how much change the girls have dealt with, Marsh said she thinks they’ve adapted well. “With everything going on, it’s just been, ‘another change? OK let’s deal with it and make the best out of it.’”

As for the rest of the season, the seniors know they need to focus on the present and each game as it comes, but feel they’re in a good spot to capture that elusive region crown, one they’ve been so close to the last few years.

“Region is looking great, as long as we keep working hard in practice and as a team, we have a good shot this year,” Bell said.

Through the first round of region, the Eagles had beaten everyone in region except losing to defending region and state champ Highland (they were slated to play Olympus on Jan. 26, after press deadline).

Looking at the 5A landscape, White identified Lehi, Farmington, Springville and region rivals Highland and Olympus as contenders for the finals.

“We can fit in there, we’re in the mix and I think we can make a splash,” he said. “We definitely have a chance at a region championship and a chance in the playoffs. Students experience winter exhibit through touch, taste and smell

S

tudents from the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind, USDB, attended Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point in January and enjoyed a hands-on, sensory-filled tour through the exhibit.

Blind students were able to touch many of the items on display to get the full experience. As their teachers say, “The students don’t focus on what they can’t see, they focus on all they can do.” The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind’s motto is, “Our Vision has No Limits.”

In addition to touring through the exhibits, they had the opportunity to enjoy the smells and tastes of s’mores by assembling and eating the sweet treats. Blindness is a spectrum, and many children vary in degrees from complete blindness to differing degrees of limited vision. Some students with a vision loss, but not total blindness, could enjoy some of the bright lights of the exhibit as well.

USDB has worked hard to safely plan and execute activities, field trips, and events even

during the pandemic that all students can enjoy even from home.

There are three upcoming Academy programs being offered for the winter session starting Feb. 4, including a Short Term Cooking Academy for elementary age students. Utah students have priority selection with out of state students filling in remaining spots, and all programs are free for students with vision impairments.

The Short Term Cooking Academy is designed to teach cooking skills in a fun and engaging way through synchronous and asynchronous learning. Students must have access to a kitchen and a device. Olympus offers Olympus Only scholarships to seniors in March

They have many resources, and meet with students regularly beginning in ninth grade. On March 1, as a last minute help for seniors, they’ll take applications for more than 30 Olympus Only scholarships.

“This year has been frustrating because there are so many unknowns.

We have many resources, and we meet with every student every year. We want them to feel comfortable preparing to apply to college,” said counselor Lauren Bleggi.

Counselors are divided by last name, and Bleggi is assigned Han-Lo. Her load this year includes ninth graders who were just moved to the high school. She thinks it will help them understand that the process starts in ninth grade.

“This is the first year we have ninth graders physically in the school.

As a counselor I appreciate it—I think it’s a good move. I get students all the time who need to work on their GPA because they didn’t know that ninth grade ‘counted’,” Bleggi said.

The timeline of college applications doesn’t leave much wiggle room.

“Most applications, including scholarships, are due around Nov. 1 of your senior year. Everything you want to include like the ACT and any clubs or service needs to be done by then,” Bleggi said.

For the first time in decades, the class of 2021 was not required to report an ACT score on their applications because the pandemic shut down testing sites.

Senior Meg Soffe took the ACT early her junior year, so she does have a score. “I took it once just to see what it was like. Then, I wanted to improve my score, so I took a prep course and took it two more times. My score went up, so it was worth it,” Soffe said.

Soffe cheers and is on the dance company, and she hopes to continue dancing in college. Though she’s not sure about a major, she always wanted to go to college. She’s looking forward to meeting new people and learning more about herself.

“I don’t have a specific plan for my major, so I decided to stay in Utah where I could pay in-state tuition to get my generals done. I applied to three Utah colleges,” Soffe said.

Soffe was assigned to counselor Craig Sudbury. She said he was always able to answer her questions, and whenever the counselors gave a presentation, it was helpful.

website (a tab on the school’s website) has links to scholarships and what you’re eligible for. They also have all the things you need to plug in to applications, like the school’s address and size of graduating class. It’s very accessible,” Soffe said.

Accessibility was the plan. “We put everything on our website and also have an Instagram account students can follow at #Olycounselors. And we’re available to talk in person,” Bleggi said.

Applying can be stressful. Soffe noted the intense essay requirements for BYU as one of her stresses. Bleggi likes to remind students that if they don’t get into the school of their choice—or their parents’ choice—it isn’t the end of the world.

“Life is like a series of doors.

Students ask me, ‘What if I go to the wrong school or take the wrong class?’

I just tell them, ‘Then you’ve learned that it wasn’t for you. You opened a door. But don’t worry—there are a lot of other doors beyond that one.’

“I also tell them about transferring to another school. This is helpful if they weren’t serious about their grades in high school. After 30 credit hours at a college, you can apply to transfer and the new college doesn’t look at high school grades,” Bleggi said.

Some students’ dreams of excelling during their senior year and earning activity-based scholarships were a casualty of the COVID year.

“Sadly, I didn’t get to apply for track scholarships due to the pandemic and track being canceled. I applied to the University of Utah, which is a school I wanted to go to since I came to the United States in fifth grade,” said Olympus senior Nat Kidane.

Kidane utilized the counselors’ advice often. “[The application process] was very stressful because I had to do it all on my own. I didn’t know anything about the process, and my parents couldn’t really help because they never went to college.

“I had to learn and do the applications as I went. I made a couple mistakes and it was frustrating, but thanks to my counselor she made it a little bit easier. I went to see her twice a month or so. She looked over my U of U application and helped me with a FAFSA application,” Kidane said.

“The Olympus Only scholarships started about 25 years ago when people approached a counselor about donating to the school. We don’t open the applications link until March 1, and it only stays open for three weeks,” Bleggi said.

The Olympus Only scholarships are a bit of an enigma on purpose. “We don’t list how much they’re worth, just who they’re intended to help. That way, you apply to scholarships that really match up with your interests.

“They are merit-based, so they could be for sports, the arts, volunteering or in memory of someone. Some are designated by donors to be used for supplies like a computer,” Bleggi said.

Bleggi said this year they are especially in need of donors. “So many situations have changed in our students’ families. People have lost jobs, there are medical bills and students are helping support their families. We need help this year more than ever,” Bleggi said.

Both Soffe and Kidane will apply for the Olympus Only scholarships.

“They told us about them in September, and for sure I’m going to apply. I think it’s a really good incentive to continue to be good during third and fourth quarters,” Soffe said.

Kidane is looking for any scholarship he can find. “It’s stressful. I’m going to apply for as many of the Olympus Only scholarships as I can because I really need the help,” he said. l

Psych 101: What is gaslighting?

I

f you’ve tuned into the federal news at any point during the past four years, you’ve probably heard a phrase or two about President Donald Trump gaslighting America. Even though the term has been thrown about rather loosely at times, it seems to be becoming part of our common collective discourse. Personally, I wanted to make sure I really understood this term, and the research behind it, before evaluating the claims made about our current political climate. I’d like to take a moment to define and clarify gaslighting, discuss its prevalence, and illuminate potential harmful impacts.

The term “gaslighting” has been used to describe abuse involving emotional and intellectual manipulation, most often recognizable through mind-manipulation strategies. Gaslighting often leads to a person questioning their sanity, perceptions of reality, and/or memories.

Even though the term was recently popularized in politics, gaslighting has been well recognized within psychology research for decades. One of the first mentions of gaslighting was on June 21, 1969. Russell Barton and J.A. Whitehead published an article in “The Lancet” where they outlined two cases in which “there were definite plots to remove an unwanted and restricting relative by securing admissions to a mental hospital.”

They compared this to the storyline of a play titled “Gas Light” by Patrick Hamilton where a husband tries to get rid of his wife by driving her into a lunatic asylum. Dr. Paige Sweet attributes the common usage of the term to a story as well. In the 1944 film by George Cukor, “Gaslight,” a husband attempts to isolate his wife by making her believe she is insane.

“His eponymous tactic is to dim and brighten the gaslights and then insist she is imagining it.

(He) aims to undermine (her) sense of self and everyday life, to confuse and distort her reality such that she must accept his imposed reality in place of her own.”

The term appeared minimally throughout the 1970s and 1980s, but eventually it began to recur in research as the focus on interpersonal relationships intensified. In 2007, Dr. Robin Stern published “The Gaslight Effect” focusing on how to identify manipulation in relationships.

As might be apparent from the contextual history of the term, gaslighting is of importance in domestic violence research and intimate partner violence (IPV) literature. “Gaslighting is a conscious or unconscious form of psychological abuse that occurs when a perpetrator distorts information to confuse a victim, triggering the victim to doubt their memory and sanity,” defines Dr. Madeline Tormoen.

In the popular conversation, confusion, distortion and anxiety are all recognizable as consequences of gaslighting. However, the potential impacts of gaslighting can quickly become more harmful and severe. Those being gaslit may start to question their own perceptions and lose trust in their own experience of reality.

Tormoen described how gaslighting may often affect memory, contribute to emotional abuse and interpersonal abuse, lead to a victim undermining their sanity, and betrayal. “Gaslighting can also prevent domestic violence victims from accessing institutional resources that would help them escape the abuse. The very institutions set up to help victims can become part of the gaslighting process,” she described.

In addition, gaslighting may contribute to double-binding and depersonalization, resulting in losing a sense of self, multiple perceptions of reality, and varied internal versions of reality.

Gaslighting creates hostile social environments. Sweet and others have argued that gaslighting is not just a psychological tactic, but a sociological phenomenon as well. “When perpetrators mobilize gender-based stereotypes, structural inequalities, and institutional vulnerabilities against victims with whom they are in

an intimate relationship, gaslighting becomes not only effective, but devastating.”

New parking structure to help alleviate canyon traffic

ocal officials dedicated a new parking structure in Cottonwood Heights as part of the Canyon Centre mixed-use development. The structure was developed through a public/private partnership to help make area shops and Big Cottonwood Canyon more accessible. The parking garage provides up to 278 public parking stalls on weekends and holidays and 80 during weekday business hours.

“As the ‘City between the Canyons,’ we are constantly looking for ways to improve our recreational experience, and one challenge we face is congestion and limited parking for those who recreate in the Cottonwood Canyons,” said Cottonwood Heights Mayor Mike Peterson.

On Jan. 14, Cottonwood Heights and Salt Lake County officials along with members of the Central Wasatch Commission gathered via Zoom for a virtual dedication of the structure.

“This is what a public/private partnership looks like when you have a good outcome,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. “There are great restaurants and amenities for people to enjoy. I can’t wait to park and head up the canyon.”

Mayor Wilson thanked Chris McCandless for his leadership on the project, which McCandless said was a long time in the making. “I remember coming to this site as a teenager, and to see it revitalized is exciting,” McCandless said. “I’m thinking of the people on those great ski days who can come here and have covered parking.”

The new parking structure is located along the southwest corner of Wasatch Boulevard and 7000 South. The Canyon Centre is a mixed-use development consisting of restaurants, a hotel that is scheduled to open in early 2021, single family homes, a future apartment building, and a future office building.

Traffic and parking, particularly on busy ski days, remains a challenge for local officials as demand for access to local canyons has outstripped infrastructure. The new facility is intended to help with canyon traffic.

“One goal for this project was to help alleviate some of that pressure, and by providing the availability of up to 278 additional parking stalls on weekends, this structure will assist in decreasing canyon-related congestion,” Mayor Peterson said. “We encourage recreationalists to take advantage of these stalls and use mass transit to make their way up the canyons.”

The parking stalls are located on the lower level of the garage and accessed on the north end of the Canyon Centre project. According to city officials, the new stalls will increase the parking inventory at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon by nearly 300%.

“It helps solve issues we face in gaining access to these mountains by reducing congestion in Cottonwood Heights and going up and down the mountains,” said Ralph Becker, executive director of the Central Wasatch Commission. “While parking garages aren’t exciting, it’s a fine example of how people can come together to get things done.” l

Granite School District holds first vaccination session for teachers in January

ranite District held its first vaccination session for thousands of employees on Jan. 15. Events were held in three locations, and nearly 2,400 staff members were vaccinated. Per the health department’s recommendation, priority was based on age, with older employees receiving the vaccine first.

“We offered the vaccine to nearly 3,200 employees, which brought the age down to 48,” said GSD communications director Ben Horsley.

Three vaccination clinics were held simultaneously on Jan. 15 at Hunter Jr. High School, the Granite District Office and Churchill Jr. High.

Skyline High cheer teacher Joey Kennedy got her vaccine at Churchill. “I’ve been at Skyline for 26 years and I love it and love the kids. Cheer isn’t a class you can do online— it’s physical and in person. I feel fine about getting the vaccine—if they gave it to all the doctors first it must be OK,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy hopes vaccination efforts will help schools get back to a sense of normalcy. Students and staff who participate in extracurricular activities are tested every other week, and a highly-anticipated event can be shut down with little notice.

“They tell her to just keep calling and trying back,” Kennedy said.

Laura Schmidt, a librarian at Fox Hills Elementary in Taylorsville, got her vaccination at the Hunter Jr. High clinic.

“I’m excited about getting the vaccine.

It’s just one more precaution, one more way to protect ourselves and be able to keep schools open. The numbers at our school have been excellent— very low. The kids have done really well,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt was hoping the vaccines would come sooner based on all the talk about teachers and what a high priority they were.

“It’s not as fast as expected, so I’m a little disappointed about that. But here we are.

They’ve expedited it, and I’m appreciative of that,” Schmidt said.

Vaccinations were also offered to staff from AMES charter school. AMES is not part of GSD, but is housed within and works with Cottonwood High School.

Keith Homer of Midvale teaches Spanish and world languages at AMES. He came to the clinic and was worried when he saw the long line, but it moved along quickly.

“We just had our board meeting and things were a little tense. We’ve been online the whole year, and so we’ve avoided any shutdowns. I think Cottonwood has had two. But some people want to go back to full in-person school,” Homer said.

Homer shared his thoughts at the meeting and urged people to see things through.

Homer trusts the vaccine in part because he has friends who are researchers, medical professionals and public health officials. He knows they’re just people getting up every day trying to do their jobs.

“I have a lot of confidence and trust in the people I see working hard every day.

They’re not doing this to be a part of some evil conspiracy. They get up every morning and go to their jobs just like we do.

“Let’s all put our energy into making things the best they can be right now. That’s when we shine our most as people,” Homer said.

Granite’s vaccine rollout was administered by Community Nursing Services. “It will be provided on an ongoing basis until all Granite employees have had the opportunity to receive both doses,” Horsley said.

Fear sells, but why does the food industry use anxiety to sell products? I mean, if there’s one thing the seven billion people on this planet agree on, it’s that we need food. (And Baby Yoda is adorable.

That’s universally accepted.)

When COVID hit last spring, I heard we’d run out of beef by autumn. My husband lost his mind. Someone told me canned vegetables would be as valuable as gold, which is good because I’d rather wear a can of peas on a chain around my neck than have to eat them.

Experts tell us food is plentiful and cheaper than ever before. Just the food left over from Las Vegas buffets could feed several Third World countries for generations. They’d all develop diabetes and heart disease, but they’d have plenty of food.

And that’s the other fear; the idea that the food we eat, even broccoli and kale, has no nutritional value because the soil’s been depleted of nutrients and we’re consuming the dietary equivalent of Rice Krispies for each meal.

So, we hear companies proclaiming to have discovered new, perfect foods. Not just foods— Super Foods (with a heartbreaking origin story). They ask questions like, Do you poop every day at noon? Are you often irritable? Well, you’re eating the wrong food!

Companies tell us fans are “raving” about their green juice. False news. No one raves about green juice. The recipes have unknown ingredients like chlorella (a dried sea vegetable) and rhodiola, a cold-climate plant used by Vikings. Mmmmm. Yummy.

(Sidenote: Vikings are dead. Did rhodiola kill them?)

Mushrooms are the new meat. The reishi mushroom is called the Queen of the Mushrooms because…um…it has a crown? I guess psilocybin mushrooms would be King of the Mushrooms, or at least the laid-back, hippie brother-in-law of the mushrooms.

Pretend meat is also the new meat.

Impossible Meat might be better for the planet, but with its soy, wheat and vegetable ingredients shaped and colored to look like chicken nuggets, it’s definitely not health food.

And don’t think it’s safe to drink water. No, sir! You can’t drink tap water, bottled water, well water, river water, toilet water or any other water unless it’s gone through an expensive, artesian reverse osmosis process. I used to drink water out of the hose in my front yard. I’m sure I’ll die full of mercury, lead and chlorine.

Spinach and romaine lettuce routinely try to kill us, and don’t get me started on GMO conspiracy theories. I don’t have that kind of time. Are apples still good for us? Can we eat corn without worrying about growing a third arm? Does everything have to be organic, farm-fresh and certified because according to Facebook, we’re all doomed!

I know Americans don’t have the best diets but throw me a grass-fed bone. We’re assaulted on all sides and just trying not to dive headfirst into a bucket of chicken for a morning snack.

Let’s drop the fear, food industry, and go back to promoting wellness as we wait to hear if Baby Yoda will be on the next season of “The Mandalorian.” Some things are more important than organic bananas.

EAGLES STILL CONTENDING WITH WHOLE NEW TEAM

ntering the season with zero returning starters and eight departed seniors, you could forgive the Skyline girls basketball team for needing time to gel. Throw in an offseason pandemic and an almost entirely new coaching staff and you might even start to lower expectations.

Not for this team.

With five new starters and only a few who played varsity last year, the Eagles went 5-1 in preseason before starting region 5-1 as well. At press deadline, they were 10-2, tied for first in region and No. 5 in the RPI. “I knew we had a talented team,” said head coach Sam White, now in his third year leading the program. “But I just figured with lack of practice and time to get to know each other…I didn’t know how we were going to mesh, but we came out really strong.”

The team’s offseason didn’t go as planned. Its banquet last year happened on a Monday in March, that Friday the schools shut down, eventually for the rest of the school year.

Its spring league was canceled. The summer camp at Dixie St., a time the girls rely on to build camaraderie, was also canceled. Open gyms in the summer were limited to primarily skill work. Besides White, the team also had a whole new coaching staff as well, one that includes hall of famer Natalie Williams.

The girls were able play in a fall league to give them a starting point, but then the opening of the season was delayed two weeks. For senior captains Grace Marsh and Maddie Bell, Sophomore Tina Njike is on a tear this season averaging a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds per game. Njike even had a four game stretch where she averaged 12 blocks per game and had three triple doubles this year that included blocks.
