CANYON RIM CARES EVENT BRINGS MILLCREEK LOCALS TOGETHER FOR A DAY OF SERVICE

or the past five years, residents of Millcreek have participated in the annual Canyon Rim Cares event. The philanthropic event, founded by Nate Gabby, is an opportunity for residents to give back to their community through multiple service projects.

“This is fifth consecutive year we’ve held the Canyon Rim Cares Day of Service” said Gibby. “The purpose is to provide Millcreek residents an opportunity to come together to do something salient to improve our community.”

Although the day is geared toward Millcreek locals, each year volunteers from across the valley participate. What transpires is an opportunity for residents to give back to the community in a targeted and tangible way.

From 9 a.m. to noon on July 16, volunteers of all ages enjoyed a complimentary breakfast and had an opportunity to interact with the organizations and sign up for service projects. Despite the heat, volunteers remained in high spirits as the day of service kicked off.

After the morning’s events concluded, volunteers proceeded to group off, and travel to their next destinations where they would begin work on their chosen service project.

This year, Canyon Rim Cares featured several philanthropic groups and organizations, ranging from a Ukrainian street market to a center that helps children cope with loss and grief.

“We’ve helped many different charities and raised more than $100,000 over the years. This year, we aided six important causes, including helping one of our elementary schools build an outdoor classroom and providing a Ukrainian market to help Ukrainian refugees,” Gibby noted.

City council to rezone Howick Street lot for affordable housing project

A

mid growing complaints from Salt Lake area residents about surging rent prices, Millcreek’s city council passed an ordinance in late June to rezone a vacant lot at 4101 S. Howick Street, clearing the path for affordable housing units to be built. The area had previously been designated for industrial and manufacturing uses and will now be zoned to accommodate mixed- use development of rental units.

The demand for affordable housing options in Millcreek as well as the greater Salt Lake region is especially pressing for low-to-moderate income residents. A 2018 housing study highlighted Millcreek’s need to create more diverse, affordable housing for Utah individuals and families at different stages of life.

The study noted that “approximately 45% of households in Millcreek have incomes of 80% area median income (AMI) or lower. Overall, there is a deficiency of 429 affordable Millcreek residences....Due to the population growth projected for Millcreek, it is anticipated that there will be a large demand for additional residences that are affordable to very low, low, and moderate-income households.”

Millcreek in particular has been slow to adapt to population booms and affordable housing challenges. The city was one of a handful of neighborhoods in the Greater Salt Lake region that had built zero new apartment units between 2000 and 2018, with the most new apartments built in Murray and Sandy.

The proposed project on South Howick Street will accommodate 150 housing units with between one and four bedrooms to be occupied by members of the same household. The housing project, which will be known as “the Howick,” aims to serve moderate-low-income residents with incomes of

up to 60% of the AMI. According to another 2019 analysis of the Salt Lake rental market published by the University of Utah’s Policy Institute, rent prices in Millcreek have increased 82% between 2000 and 2018, with the average rent in 2000 being $664 and the average rent 18 years later being $1,209. Even more alarming than this study’s figures is the data from the four years since the analysis was conducted. According to Rentcafe.com, the average rent price in Millcreek as of July 2022 is $1,670. If calculated using the same metrics as the University of Utah’s analysis, this figure would mark a 38% increase in rent for Millcreek tenants just in the last

four years.

During a city council meeting about the rezoning permit, a resident asked what the rent prices would be for these rentals.

Architect and planner Alisha Hammett responded that “the high end of the range will be $1,100 to $1,700 for a four bedroom unit, based on household income.” Hammett works for Shopworks Architecture, a Denver-based architecture firm partnering with the Community Development Corporation of Utah to build the housing units.

The Community Development Corporation of Utah is a nonprofit based in Salt Lake City with a focus on housing stability. The nonprofit “builds new single- and

Shopworks’ proposal for the South Howick Street lot highlighted the connectedness of the area, noting its one-fourth mile distance to a TRAX station and one-half mile distance to the nearest bus stop. The zoning and conditional use permits will be submitted to the Utah Housing Corporation in October 2022 as a part of an application to receive Low-Income Housing Tax Credits. Upon allocation of these credits, architects will return to the city council with a site plan for their approval. l

City’s emergency operations plan outlines environmental hazards exacerbated by climate change

illcreek’s emergency manager Andrew Clark presented council members with a revised Emergency Operations Plan at the June 27 meeting of the Millcreek City Council. Council members voted unanimously to adopt the new Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), which outlines disaster policies and procedures for the city of Millcreek. The aim of the EOP, according to Clark, is to “provide guidelines for planning, coordinating, and managing the overall response and recovery of Millcreek before, during and after major disasters or emergency events.”

The plan recognizes Millcreek’s potential to be impacted by a variety of hazards, including natural, technological or manmade ones which may lead to an emergency. The EOP outlines emergency response policies, makes operational assumptions about response, and assesses the risk of different potential threats to the area.

The threats assessed by the EOP are divided into three categories and are scored for both their probability of occurrence and the severity of their impact. These scores are then multiplied to identify the most severe and probable threats to the community. The top five public safety threats named in the EOP are earthquakes, severe winter weather, severe weather, pandemic and wildfires.

All of the potential threats are outlined in the third part of the EOP called the hazard annexes. The earthquake annex specifically explains how Salt Lake County’s proximity to the Wasatch Fault makes it susceptible to earthquakes of magnitudes up to 7.5. Utah experiences hundreds of small earthquakes every year, but only six of those on average have a magnitude greater than 3.0. Moderate earthquakes, such as those between 5.5 and 6.5 on the Richter scale, occur about every 10 years with large earthquakes (magnitude 6.5-7.5) occurring every 50 years. However, climate scientists have identified the correlation between rising global temperatures and increased seismic activity, meaning there may be more frequent and severe earthquakes for Utah residents in the future.

Many Utahns will remember as recently as March 2020 when the state suffered an earthquake with a 5.7 magnitude, its strongest experienced since 1992.

The updated EOP designates several communities at the western boundary of the Wasatch Front as a wildland urban interface (WUI), where “wildfires…have the potential to spread to the surrounding neighborhood, especially during the dry season.” Millcreek in particular is considered part of a WUI and is an area of concern for wildfires due to its proximity to conservation land. The plan recognizes that there are currently limited water resources to fight wildfires with

and that “climate change will likely increase the potentiality of a serious conflagration in Millcreek.”

Notably absent from the plan’s hazard annex is any mention of air quality. The American Lung Association’s 2022 State of the Air report ranked Salt Lake City’s ozone as the 10th-most polluted of all U.S. cities.

Poor air quality can contribute to several adverse health outcomes for people who reside in polluted areas. Among these are asthma, lung cancer, heart attack, stroke, metabolic disorders and premature death.

While pollution may not appear to be as pressing an emergency as earthquakes or wildfires, the ever-shrinking Great Salt Lake threatens the already-poor air quality of the region and presents a danger to public health and safety if water levels continue to decline.

The sediment in the lake bed contains dangerous levels of arsenic, a highly toxic element that is being exposed by the reduction in water levels. Once exposed, these particles are swept up by the wind and become airborne, threatening the health of 80% of Utah’s residents who live along the Wasatch Front.

Lawmakers and environmentalists have begun exploring several solutions to help offset shrinking water levels in the Great Salt Lake. Ideas range from increasing per-gallon water prices (so that consumption decreases and more water reaches the lake) to a pipeline that diverts water from the Pacific

Ocean. Regardless of which remedy prevails, solutions to the problem will be slow to come to fruition and costly for the state to execute. Further, like other environmental hazards, the Great Salt Lake’s declining levels will also be exacerbated by climate change.

Millcreek residents who are concerned about toxic pollution can take action by decreasing their personal water consumption, avoiding outdoor exercise when air quality is poor, and contacting their government officials about making air quality a legislative priority. l

Local artist Durga Ekambaram explores different mediums in Millcreek Library exhibit

D

urga Ekambaram started her artistic pursuits at a young age, guided by her mother, an artist in India. “I love to express my ethnicity and culture through art,” she said. Ekambaram left her job as a software engineer in 2015 and has been a full-time artist in Utah since then, with works on display in Daybreak, South Jordan City Hall, the Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum, as well as being commissioned for outdoor mural projects throughout Salt Lake County.

Her most recent display at the Millcreek Library explores her passion for mixed mediums and different techniques. l

“Splurge,” acrylic. In this technique, acrylic paint, glue and water is mixed together and poured on canvas to get desired patterns. “The outcome of the painting always has an element of surprise which always excites me,” says the artist Durga Ekambaram.

“Shore Temple,” coffee. This painting is done using coffee powder and water, mixed according to desired consistencies. The shore temple is located in southern India in a place called Mahabalipuram on the shore of Bay of Bengal. This temple was built in 700 A.D. and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The shore temple is one of the oldest structural stone temples of south India.

“Blue Coral Snake,” egg shells. The medium of this painting is acrylic and eggshells. The process involves pressing clean dry eggshells on a canvas surface smeared with glue. Once the eggshells dry, it is then painted on using acrylic colors.

“Intricacy,” quilling. Quilling is the process in which thin sheets of paper are rolled on a needle and then pressed to form desired shapes and patterns. Artist Durga Ekambaram learned this technique from her mother, an artist in India.

“Self-portrait,” watercolor. The theme of this watercolor resonates with Durga Ekambaram’s journey as an artist and is in a way a self-portrait.

“I feel the messy paint palette always allows the artist to create a soulful art piece,” she said.

“The Secret Garden,” clay. “I love to work with clay, be it adding texture to my paintings or creating sculptures,” said artist Durga Ekambaram.

“Plein Air,” acrylic. A plein air painting refers to any artwork done in the outdoors, inspired by the environment in which the artist works. Durga Ekambaram painted this artwork at the Sandy Amphitheater last year in a span of three hours.

“Srirangam Temple,” watercolor. This temple is the biggest temple tower in the Asian subcontinent.

“Mysore Palace,” pencil. “I have always enjoyed sketching and painting Indian temples. This palace is located in the city of Mysore, known as the City of Palaces. The domes in the palace are built in the Indo-Saracenic style. This is a blend of Indian and Gothic styles. The palace is entirely lit during the Dasara festival each year. The beautiful architecture of this palace draws more than six million visitors each year,” said Durga Ekambaram.

“Mysore Palace,” acrylic. “As an artist, I have always tried to reinvent myself. I started practicing a unique technique in painting known as upside down painting. In this process I paint an entire artwork in reverse. Once I complete the painting, I turn the canvas to see the art. This is a very intriguing process for me and I enjoy the challenges it offers,” said Durga Ekambaram.

“Royal Indian Elephant,” gold foil. Tanjore painting is a classic south Indian style painting done on a wooden panel. A Tanjore painting was generally made on a canvas pasted over a plank of wood Arabic gum. The canvas was then evenly coated with a paste of French chalk or powdered limestone and a binding medium and dried. A paste, made of limestone powder and a binding medium called makku, was used for creating the Gesso work.

Gold leaves and gems of varied hues were inlaid in selected areas like pillars, arches, thrones, dresses, etc. Finally, colors were applied on the sketch.

n today’s world, access to high-speed internet is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Unfortunately, many Utah families can’t afford to pay for internet access without cutting back on other essentials.

The Affordable Connectivity Program, created as part of a bipartisan infrastructure law, helps millions of American families reduce internet service costs. As the only internet provider in Utah participating in ACP, Comcast has increased its efforts to bring awareness to the program while helping families receive $30 each month toward connectivity costs.

“It's never been more important to make sure that every Utahn has access to in-home broadband,” said Bill Crim, CEO of United Way of Salt Lake. “We are grateful for Comcast's contribution to closing the digital divide and will continue to work with Comcast and our other partners to remove barriers and address the needs of those without access in every zip code in our community.”

To access the savings, people can sign up for Internet Essentials Plus, a service that is free after the ACP Benefit, at local Xfinity stores. Internet Essentials Plus includes 100 Mbps speed, a cable modem, access to WiFi hotspots and unlimited data for $29.95 per month.

Any Xfinity customer across all Comcast markets who qualifies for ACP can apply their $30 credit toward their monthly internet bill.

As an added bonus, Internet Essentials customers can get one Xfinity Mobile Unlimited line with 5G for $24.95 a month plus tax when they

qualify for ACP. In addition, through its Project UP program, Comcast commits $1B to advance digital equity and build a future of unlimited possibilities.

“Our state is making great strides toward digital equity, thanks to engaged community members and dedicated partners like Comcast,” said Liz Gabbitas, digital access and education program manager with the Utah State Library Division. “These collaborations are how we'll get every Utahn connected.”

ACP is available for homes with an income of less than twice the federal poverty level, $55,000 a year for a family of four or $27,000 a year for an individual. Also, those who receive SNAP/EBT, Medicaid, or free and reduced-price school lunch would also qualify.

ACP is a game-changer that makes highspeed internet available to families across the state. United Way of Salt Lake operates a 2-1-1 help center in Utah, where 6% of calls are related to bill payment assistance. The center will refer inbound callers to Internet Essentials and ACP when calls refer to internet bills.

“Working toward all Utahns having access to high-speed, in-home broadband is the right thing to do,” said Deneiva Knight, Comcast external affairs director. “We're proud to support the Affordable Connectivity Program, which provides people with the digital resources needed to actively participate in today's society.”l

Also involved in this year’s event was Peace House.

“Peace House provides support services, safe housing, and prevention education to victims of domestic violence. Canyon Rim Cares will help Peace House client by providing household kits that will help them resettle in a new living situation,” said a media release provided by Canyon Rim Cares.

Volunteers could also work with The Sharing Place. The Sharing Place tasks itself with the unique mission of helping children who need support after dealing with a death in the family. For this years’ service project, volunteers could opt to deep clean The Sharing Place.

Millcreek Elementary Outdoor Classroom was present.

Forty percent of Millcreek Elementary students come from low-income families. Canyon Rim Cares volunteers helped build and install garden boxes and other parts of an outdoor classroom for the school.

Finally, participants could either choose from Art Access or 72-hour kits. Art Access allows individuals with mental and physical disabilities the opportunity to receive training from professional artists. Due to the pandemic, Art Access has had to suspend usual operations. At this year’s event, they sold pieces by local artists to supplement lost income. As per the 72-hour kits, volunteers were able to create their own kits for themselves and/or provide donations for locals in need.

Canyon Rim Cares has found success with this event citing as many as 500 participants at past events. It was a simple premise that prompted founder Gibby to pioneer its creation. “Actually, five or six years ago, I had a couple of neighbors that both serendipitously told me they felt excluded in the neighborhood activities for one reason or another,” Gibby said.

“We thought, you know what, we’re going to go out

and find something that can help break down walls, build connections. So, we thought let’s do a day of service where everyone can come out and do something for their community,” Gibby said.

Gibby remains hopeful and inspired by the community and their continued enthusiasm to give back. “It truly is the miracle of Millcreek that residents, businesses and causes can come together on a single day and make such a huge difference.”

Beyond the byline: East Coast equestrian transplant is award-winning writer for Millcreek Journal

Editor’s note: this series highlights the writers behind the stories found here every month. riter Deb Hafner has a serious demeanor but a friendly manner. A transplant from the East Coast, she has embraced her life in Utah and her love of writing. She also brought her equestrian skills with her.

Born in New Jersey, and raised in Newton, Connecticut and Fairfax County, Virginia, Hafner received a bachelor’s degree in English Literature as well as a teaching degree. The call of the Big Apple lured her where she primarily did marketing work for law firms.

As a resident of Manhattan from 1999-2006, she was present for the attack on the World Trade Center. “My husband (then boyfriend) was on his way to work, and he saw the planes fly overhead,” Hafner said. “He called me and said, ‘We're under attack,’ and then he proceeded to run uptown. I worked in Midtown.”

At the time, Hafner lived on the Upper West Side. “I started running to work. I don't know why I didn't just stay home,” she said. “I think I was thinking I was going to meet my husband in town somewhere as he was running up.”

“The second plane hit when I was on my way to work. The building started falling and that was crazy, and the smoke came all the way up Fifth Avenue.”

Despite the trauma of the experience, Hafner remained in Manhattan a few more years. In addition to her work at law firms, she also taught horseback riding lessons in Central Park. English riding is her specialty.

Hafner and her husband moved to Utah in 2013. Soon thereafter, she began her acquisition of horses and rides on a regular basis.

Despite a busy life with two sons and equestrian interests, Hafner finds time to write for the Millcreek Journal.

“I like the breadth of stories that are found in Millcreek,” she said. Hafner recently took 2nd place for environmental writing in the Utah Society of Professional Journalists contest for her story, “Good news for Mill Creek six months after concrete spill.” This was for Division B – or smaller newspapers in the state.

As a writer, she sometimes feels inspired. “Sometimes, it's just coming through me like magic,” she said. “And

other times, I'm just sitting there staring at my computer for an hour and moving paragraphs around, and getting sidetracked, and making kids food, and then going back to it.”

On a sadder note, Hafner’s son, Colton, was diagnosed with deadly brain cancer not long after she and her husband arrived in Utah. “I learned so much about pediatric cancer,” she said.

“I do a lot of research in my spare time keeping up with cures and clinical trials and the stages of clinical trials because when he (Colton) was going through cancer, I joined this group of parents who also had children with medulloblastoma. And everybody shared ideas and knowledge, and I think it saved his life because of the information I was getting from that.”

Though Colton is currently doing well, Hafner is still driven to do research and is convinced that some of the knowledge gleaned from other parents of children with cancer helped to save her son’s hearing during treatment.

In addition to her love of family, writing, cancer research and English riding, Hafner loves animals. Not only does she have three horses, but she also has two Australian shepherds, a cat, and a rabbit in her front foyer. And these were the animals that were visible in a single visit. There may be more.

If Hafner’s multi-faceted life continues to migrate to her writing, Millcreek can expect many more multi-faceted stories to come in the Millcreek Journal.

Defending champs take the field again with plenty of returners

By Travis Barton The Skyline girls soccer team returns to the field this August having won two of the last three 5A state titles (rival Olympus won the other). The team returns several contributors from last year’s undefeated squad in Annie Boyden, Jenna Nichols, Abbie Leonard and Lily Hall. The Eagles will open their season on Aug. 2 at home to Ridgeline.

Bracing for impact: How roller derby builds confidence and community

I

t might look like an aggressive collision, with no rhyme or reason, but Oo Barracuda, Ginny Wheelsley and Sacajawheela know exactly what they’re doing.

Roller derby might be the most misunderstood sport in the country. It’s part football, part marathon and part wrestling match, but beneath all the noise and excitement is a game with intense strategy and athleticism—and cool derby names.

By day, Jess Hill works at Primary Children’s Hospital, but at night, she rules the derby track as Sacajawheela (Wheela for short).

Hill and her daughter have played since 2013 when they fell in love with the derby community.

As a nurse, Hill deals with trauma-level incidents on a regular basis. The mental and emotional release of roller derby has had a big impact on her life.

“Sometimes it’s all I can do to get myself to practice but then I feel so much better, not just physically but mentally. It kind of clears my space and gets that stress and

energy out.”

Hill coached the junior league and watched youth learning valuable skills, and not just about derby.

“We have a lot of juniors coming in with self-esteem issues and getting bullied,” she said. “There are a lot of kids struggling with school. I have seen kids come out of their shells and do a complete 180 with confidence and having something to be proud of by joining roller derby and having that community.”

Amy Royer (aka Ginny Wheelsley) took up the sport nine years ago, after her first child was born. She was looking for a way to get out of the house and find a fun way to be active.

“Now it’s my social outlet, it’s my physical outlet and it’s like anxiety therapy,” she said. “It really has been an incredible outlet in my life.”

An inclusive sport that welcomes all genders and identities, there are teams for women, men, LGBTQ, coed and juniors. With

It’s not the aggressive, competitive game portrayed in movies, but make no mistake, players take the sport seriously.

“People think, myself included, that all these women are going to be tough, mean and competitive and take out their anger on everything, but it’s not like that at all,” Royer said. “I’m not going to lie.

There are some injuries. We’re not going to make you do anything you’re uncomfortable with, but accidents do happen.”

Since COVID, derby numbers have dropped but Hill hopes to get more people involved in the sport.

She said it’s not just about skating, although skating has a physical benefit, but it’s about feeling like you belong in a community that cares about each person.

has to be tough and aggressive to succeed at the sport, but Hill said that’s not true. One of her best friends was very timid but Hill said she now conducts a lot of the league training sessions. For more information about joining a derby league, visit SaltLakeRollerDerby. org

“It’s not just a bunch of chaos out on the track. It might look like it, but there’s a lot of coaching and training that goes into it,” Hill said. “You get knocked down but you get back up again. You leave it out on the track and reset. There are just so many things that cross over to actual life skills.”l

Granite Education Foundation operates food pantries to combat summer hunger

ood insecurity is often cited as an invisible problem. It effects children everywhere, and yet, it’s not always evident that a child is at risk of missing a meal. During the school year, children who might not have access to food otherwise, rely on school for nourishment. The summer months, which should bring joy and freedom to children, suddenly become stressful and scary.

“Nothing is scarier than food insecurity,” The Granite Education Foundation said via their Facebook page. “Granite will operate three Community Food Pantries throughout the summer months.”

The foundation is one of many organizations trying to help combat summer hunger.

Summer, with its scorching temperatures and long days, already make it difficult for students to stay fed, let alone hydrated.

Summer food pantries are a necessity during a season that often gets overlooked.

Here in Utah, the summer months are when donations are at their lowest. In fact, major providers like the Utah Food Bank rely on the giving season, winter, to make up for these sizeable gaps.

While the food bank is a great resource for those seeking food, its location isn’t always ideal for those who may not have the money to spend on excess transit, especially

during the current inflation crisis with high gasoline prices. “It falls back on the community, and we want to do our part to make sure we can take care of those in direct need. If you, or someone you know, needs assistance during the summer, [they can visit our website for more information on locations and times],” the foundation stated on Facebook.

According to the foundation, over 54% of students in Granite District are at an economic disadvantage. Moreover, major fallout from the pandemic and inflation have pushed more families into the brink of poverty than in years prior. Not only does the foundation help with providing food, but they also offer students backpacks, shoes, and other essential items to help students succeed in school.

“As a school and as a district, we have such an amazing opportunity to create an environment where students feel loved, safe, and taken care of. It really does begin with helping meet those basic needs,” writes a social worker in the District.

Other organizations are running food pantries this year too. K2 the Church and the Southeast Christian Church also run a monthly pantry. However, many of these pantries conclude at the end of July, leaving August a vulnerable time.

gainst all odds, Sparta United Soccer Club won the Far West Regionals and earned a spot in the national competition in Florida. On the boys side, clubs from Utah don’t advance to nationals as often. In the last 20 years, only a few have done so.

That is due in part to a rising star from Canyon Rim, a community within Millcreek City. His name is Alex Horton. He started playing in club teams when he was 6 and it became a natural fit.

“Before joining this team, I was on another team that wasn’t on my level of play,” Horton said. “I left that club looking for more.

I knew a few people on this team so I gave it a shot. They gave me the opportunity to play with their best team when I was 11. I took it and have played with them ever since.”

Sparta United is based in Sandy. It is run under the U.S Soccer Federation. They run everything from competitive youth soccer to the team that represents the U.S in the World Cup. The best teams in each state then qualify for the tournament within a certain region.

Utah is in the Far West Region. It comprises 11 states from Hawaii and Alaska all the way to Colorado.

This team was good enough to be a top team in Utah and played in the Far West Region tournament last month in Idaho. All states from that region have a team play in that big tournament. Sparta United won that.

On the way to winning Far West Regionals, Sparta United beat powerhouse teams from higher-population areas including Arizona, Washington, Oregon, and Northern California. They go to the national championships to play the teams from the other regions to be the national champion.

Sparta United is made up of elite-level youth soccer players from across the Wasatch Front. Horton is the only player who lives in the Millcreek area. Utah is a lower population state so it is hard to beat teams from Nevada, California, Washington and Oregon.

Utah has higher participation for girls soccer so they win their region more regularly. For boys it is more rare. Only a handful of boys teams from Utah have ever won their region and qualified for nationals.

Sparta United is a U16 boys team. Some of the players also compete in high school, but the focus is mainly on club soccer. That’s the pathway to collegiate and professional opportunities. Most players on the team have aspirations to compete on those levels.

Horton is already being recruited by several universities and professional clubs. Half of these players on this team played for RSL academy, including Horton, but for various reasons it didn’t work out for them there.

Those Major League Soccer club academies don’t participate with U.S. Soccer, but the level of play is high. Horton is doing the

equivalent of what AAU is for basketball. He just celebrated his 16th birthday. Nationals is held this year in Orlando at the ESPN Sports Complex.

There are at least 300 universities sending coaches which provides opportunities for players to be scouted. As a star player for the team, Horton has made an effort to find professional players that inspire him. While some kids point to the obvious Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi as their favorite players, Horton is a student of the game that recognizes players that the average soccer observer doesn’t know about.

“I like Robert Lewandowski,” Horton said. “He dominates and is a goal scorer which is inspiring for me. He has a good work ethic. I’ve been dreaming of becoming a pro like him.”

Lewandowski is a Polish player who is a striker for La Liga club Barcelona. While he hasn’t yet traveled overseas to play in Europe yet, Horton has traveled extensively to compete at the highest level for his age in the sport he loves.

“I travel for camps and have played in stadiums in Colorado or as far as North Carolina,” Horton said. “I played against RSL Academy in Monarchs Stadium and that was cool.”

Soccer isn’t an easy sport, but Horton realized from a young age that he had a passion for it.

Horton said. “I started by just kicking a ball.

I played rec soccer and progressed to where I am now. My dad also grew up playing soccer so it runs in the family.”

While they faced long odds, Sparta United overcame those odds which was due in large part to their teamwork.

“I think a big reason for our successful play was our attitude,” Horton said. “It was tough in some games, but we talked and encouraged each other and kept everything positive. We were motivated to play a certain way and got the job done. Success is based on our attitude when we come to the games.

We need to be uplifting to each other to do well.”

Aside from his success at an already young age, Horton also hopes that the next generation of players after him will find success.

“If I had to give advice to a little kid, I’d say work to work at your best rate,” Horton said. “There will be days where you want to give up, but don’t give up. You need to keep fighting for what you want until you get it.

Don’t give up. Fight for what you love and want.”

Despite the ups and downs, Horton is proud that his team has gotten this far.

“I’m super proud of my teammates,” Horton said. “Despite winning regionals, nothing is over yet. We still got nationals to play for. I can’t wait to see what we have to offer in Orlando.” l

early one million miles away from Earth, the James Webb Space Telescope is gazing into space with the intensity of a teenager watching TikTok. The most powerful observatory ever launched (Hubble orbits a measly 340 miles away from Earth), the JWST navigated to its location and deployed its mirrors, telescopes, solar panels and antennas, unfolding like a Transformer in the middle of space.

NASA (Nerding About Space Again) was unsurprisingly geeked about the first images from the JWST and organized a live event to reveal the pictures to the world. I’m an astronomy fangirl, so it made my nerdy

heart happy to see the images unveiled on July 12 during the NASA production.

I couldn’t help but appreciate that Hollywood hadn’t produced the reveal show. It would have been completely different, with movie stars turning it into a literal song-anddance. It would have included a Gorgeous Galaxy red carpet event before the Beautiful People, dressed in sequins and velvet, highlighted the space pictures “right after these messages.”

Instead of talking to actual astrophysicists, the Beautiful People would have interviewed actors like Matthew McConaughey and Tom Hanks, asking them what it was

like portraying an astronaut in the movies.

There would have been glitzy graphics, a soundtrack by Lizzo and brief glimpses of the space images before the cameras returned to the Beautiful People so they could talk about how much they liked planets.

Thankfully, NASA did the whole program themselves. It was like someone handed the high school astronomy club an iPhone and told them to prepare a science project about the Webb telescope. They didn’t use professional spokespeople. They weren’t dressed in formal wear. It was just astrophysicists literally (yes, literally) bouncing with excitement as the world saw the photos for the first time.

There was even a technical glitch when NASA tried to connect to scientists in Canada but couldn’t get through. NASA can relay images from billions of light years away, but can’t connect with colleagues in Montreal.

and black holes and cosmic cliffs and binary stars, which I don’t think are legal in Utah.

It showed a universe teeming with galaxies never seen before. At least not by people on Earth.

The telescope can see through space dust, asteroid rubble and alien trash to get the clearest pictures ever created. Scientists once thought there was only one galaxy in the universe, but one JWST image showed thousands of galaxies in a teensy bit of sky.

Hopefully, this will prove to politicians that the world does not revolve around them.

Webb’s mission is to search for light from the first stars and galaxies that formed the universe after the Big Bang, unless you don’t believe in the Big Bang. In that case, you can sit next to those who think the moon landing was fake, the earth is flat, evolution is a fraud, the Mars mission is bogus, the moon is an alien spacecraft, that it’s NASA’s job to create space hoaxes and we’ve never crossed the Van Allen Belt.

But if you’re a star-nerd, like me, watching something so vast is mind-boggling.

We’re a tiny, blue marble floating through the enormity of space, doing our best not to fall into a black hole or get vaporized by a meteor.

So many evolutionary steps had to happen for us to even be here. What a rare gift.
