O

n March 17, Millcreek Mayor Jeff Silvestrini, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson, and Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera united at the new Millcreek City Hall to break ground, a traditional ceremony to signal the first day of construction.

The new city hall will be located at 1330 E. Chambers Ave. (3205 South) near the Millcreek common skate loop. The groundbreaking showed designs included renderings of the public market cafe, lobby interior, and a view of the expected outdoors skate loop located on the ground floor. The center of the commons will also have places for local restaurants and rotating vendors from farmer’s markets.

The new city hall is intended to be an inviting place for people to spend time together.

The top floor will have a community room capable of hosting 180 patrons for a sit down banquet and more patrons in the event of a conference. The same space will be available for rent for private events.

On the third floor of the new city hall will be the United Police Department Precinct of Millcreek. The present precinct is located at 3900 South.

The designs feature open spaces build with light wood and spots of greenery incorporated for an outdoors effect. The windows are made large for views outdoors and for the benefit of natural light.

The former thrift store space leased as the current city hall has been in service since 2016; however, the contract is set to finish in June 2023, and Millcreek has become a large city in need of its own official city hall since six years ago.

Highland High School celebrates longtime teacher

N

early 70 years ago, high school educator Dean Collett walked into Highland High School and never looked back.

Collett, who has been affectionately dubbed “Mr. Highland” has taught thousands of students over his nearly seven decade run as a teacher. Incidentally, Collett’s first day at Highland just so happened to also be the school’s opening day. In short, Highland High School has never known a time when Collett was not present.

Prior to his impressive career at Highland, Collett explored a few different pathways. From serving a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint’s mission in Sweden to gaining acceptance into the College of Physicians and Surgeons in San Francisco, Collett was initially torn in multiple directions unsure of what to do next. Following a short bid in the United States Army, Collett eventually settled on the University of Utah’s College of Education. After graduating in the summer of 1956, Collett jumped right into work at Highland High School.

“I started at Highland High School the day it opened. After a few years, we had our first graduating class in 1959. The rest is history. I have been here ever since and have had the pleasure of watching each subsequent class, generation after generation, graduate.”

Collett first began his career as a mathematics teacher. Following his stint in mathematics, Collett also taught both German and Russian language. Even Collett admits it’s hard to imagine a time when Russian was actually a language option at Highland High School, let alone any school, anywhere.

“Our principal at the time was a man named Dr. W. Fred Arbergast, who was a

very innovative individual. I moved from teaching both mathematics and German to exclusively Russian. Teaching Russian was an opportunity to do something that had never been done before, and frankly, there was a lot of interest about that part of the world at the time.”

In the decades that followed, Collett would witness thousands of students graduate. He quickly became a highly respected and well-loved teacher, as well as a touchstone of Highland High School culture. Understandably so, as there has not been a time where Highland was open that Collett was not present.

Collett has witnessed everything from teacher’s strikes to the coming and going of several district superintendents. While Collett has seen many positive changes occur during his time at Highland, he maintains that he was realistic about what teaching would mean in a monetary sense.

Even today, conversations are still being had about the role of teachers and their need for a livable salary. The same issue has consistently popped up over the duration of his career. Yet as far as Collett was concerned, he never walked into teaching expecting much in terms of money and benefits, realizing quickly that it would be his passion and desire that would largely fuel his decades-long career.

“I knew what I was getting into when I got into teaching. I knew there was not a lot of money to be had. But that was OK for me, because [making money] has never been a huge factor in my life. I’ve been lucky to learn to live on whatever I’ve had.

It’s something I’ve learned to do from the beginning. Granted, I’ve been fortunate not to have a lot of the familial expenses that others do. But perhaps that’s what made me a good teacher, my ability to give

that extra level of attention to students,” he said.

Given his lifelong contribution to the school, Highland wanted to honor Collett’s extraordinary loyalty and unmatched dedication. As of 2022, the commons room at Highland will feature Collett’s name in its official title. This well-deserved honor comes as no surprise to the faculty, students, and community who have adored Collett for decades.

Looking back at his career, Collett remains adamant that he wouldn’t have

changed his path in the slightest.

“This is where I belong,” Collett said.

“If I had it all to do over again, I would jump right back into it as far and as hard as I did. It has been the most rewarding thing in my life. There is nothing more gratifying than having a student whom you’ve taught 30 years ago, not only remember you, but remember something that you had shown them or told them. That has been one of my life’s greatest satisfactions.” l

Then and now: From one doctor to 1,000, nostalgic St. Mark’s celebrates 150 years

or the past few years, as the Covid-19 pandemic affected medical staff and hospitals across the nation, St. Mark’s Hospital has been no exception.

“We felt the full force of Covid-19 in our halls, no doubt,” said CEO Jeremy Bradshaw, “but this year we are celebrating the St. Mark’s legacy of 150 years in Utah.”

St. Mark’s has been around not only for the most recent global pandemic, but also for a typhoid epidemic, the polio outbreak in the 1950s, the Great Depression and two world wars.

“We’ve seen it all, and we are still here for our community, committed to providing the best healthcare in Utah,” Bradshaw said.

Hospital staff are taking the time to reflect on St. Mark’s long presence in Utah, juxtaposing its many historical contributions with its modern achievements, and giving back to the community with events, donations and volunteerism.

St. Mark’s was the first hospital in Utah, opening its doors April 30, 1872. The small hospital building on 500 East 400 South was secured by Episcopal Rev. Daniel S. Tuttle to fill the health care void in the blossoming Salt Lake valley. It had six beds, one physician (Dr. John F. Hamilton), all male nurses and its patients were primarily miners with lead poisoning and industrial injuries.

Today’s St. Mark’s, now owned by MountainStar Healthcare, part of the Mountain Division of HCA Healthcare, is in the middle of a $140 million renovation and new construction project, which includes building a modern patient tower planned to open in 2023. It serves 80,000-plus outpatients, 15,000-plus inpatients and delivers over 3,500 babies per year. St. Mark’s employs over 2,000 doctors, staff, and volunteers and is part of a national and international network of nearly 300 hospitals.

In 1893, and a couple of growth-related moves later, the hospital was located at 803 North 200 West, adjacent to the fabled Warm Springs, where patients could enjoy plunges into the alleged healing water.

During this time the hospital began gathering items for a time capsule that was placed as a cornerstone in one of the original buildings. When the hospital moved to its current campus at 1200 E. 3900 South, the time capsule was moved to the main lobby. In April, the hospital plans to open the time capsule in a public ceremony.

“Thanks to the incredible preservation efforts by St. Mark’s Hospital colleagues who have come and gone in the century-plus before us, it is our understanding that the time capsule will include historical items dating as far back as the late 1800s—in the years immediately after the hospital was founded in 1872,” Sean Patterson, COO at St. Mark’s Hospital said. “We

also have reason to believe that the time capsule holds several items from the 1970s when St. Mark’s Hospital moved into our current building and location. These items are expected to not only help tell the story of St. Mark’s over time—from medical professionals to standard practices in healthcare—but also, to paint a picture of the world at the time.”

St. Mark’s continued its trajectory as a transformative, forward-thinking institution in 1894, when the St. Mark's Hospital School of Nursing was formed. As the first training school for nurses in the Intermountain West, it had dormitories and an accredited program. The school exists today as the St. Mark’s-Westminster College School of Nursing.

In 1895, St. Mark's started the first ambulance service in Utah with its acquisition of a horse-drawn wagon. The hospital superintendent at the time, D. Douglas Wallace, declared, "Our ambulance, which is the only one in the city, has been invaluable and a great boon to those unfortunate enough to meet with accidents.” One hundred and fifty years later, St. Mark’s has two Airbus AS350 B3e model high-altitude performing helicopters, the same model as the first aircraft to make a successful landing on Mount Everest.

As an institution of historical firsts with a storied history in Utah, St. Mark’s was also first to offer medical insurance; purchase an X-ray machine; create a charity association to aid with funding; and launch one of the earliest children’s wards.

Fast forward 150 years, and St. Mark’s continues this paragon, pioneering notable firsts in surgical robotics, women’s health and community-targeted online courses.

St. Mark’s has planned activities to engage patients, employees and the Utah community in its sesquicentennial celebration. In addition to the festivities surrounding the opening of the time capsule, St. Mark’s will be hosting an ongoing food drive, free medical educational seminars, partnerships with local businesses, fundraisers for K-12 classrooms, and volunteer opportunities to benefit the surrounding community.

Millcreek locals summit Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro

“W

e saw thousands of zebras, water buffalo, wildebeests; animals as far as the eye could see – to the horizon.”

And to think, that spectacular view is not even the one Millcreek residents Karyn and Brian Kerdolff recently travelled nearly 10,000 miles to see in Tanzania. At least it wasn’t their “top priority” view.

First and foremost, the Taylorsville City Global Information Systems Planner and her husband spent 38 hours in transit – flying up and over the North Pole – to take in the view atop Africa’s highest point (19,341 feet) – Mount Kilimanjaro.

While you and I were stocking up on Super Bowl party snacks – the day before the big game, Feb. 12 – Karyn and Brian were boarding a plane bound for San Francisco. From there they flew up over the pole, to Doha, Qatar… laid over for eight hours… and then flew to Kilimanjaro Airport, about 65 miles from the peak.

“We’re both age 31, have no children yet and figured this was the kind of dream vacation we ought to take while we can,” Karyn explained. “We are more long-distance backpackers than mountain climbers. But climbing Mount Kilimanjaro does not require any technical gear. So, we were confident we could do it.”

The Kerdolffs moved to Utah from Cincinnati, Ohio just four years ago. Karyn says one of the biggest reasons they moved west was to be closer to adventurous outdoor recreational opportunities.

“We’ve hiked to the top of Kings Peak (Utah’s highest summit, at 13,528 feet),” she added. “We’ve also hiked the Washington State peninsula and the Teton Crest Trail (about 40 miles).”

to summit Kilimanjaro.

“We hiked 35 miles in seven days, Feb. 15 to 21, led by guides and, honestly, going slower than we would have on our own,” Karyn explained. “The guides slow the pace because you are spending that time acclimating to the altitude. They had oxygen available. But you don’t need it, if you acclimate to the thin air properly.”

All that walking was done by natural light – from dawn to well before dusk – until “summit day.”

secamp at about midnight, all wearing headlamps (for the first time on the journey),” Kerdolff said. “We were nearly to the summit as the sun came up. It was so cold. I was wearing all the layering I had – and wishing I’d brought my snow pants also.”

But in the next breath Karyn adds, the view was worth the discomfort.

“The air is thin and you are exhausted, but then you get to look down into the center of the (Mt. Kilimanjaro dormant volcano) crater,” she said. “You can also see permanent glaciers.

And, off in the distance, Mount Meru.”

Mt. Meru is another dormant volcano – the fifth-highest peak in Africa – about 45 miles west of Kilimanjaro.

Even before the Kerdolff's Feb. 27 return to Utah, Karyn’s “boss” – Taylorsville Mayor Kristie Overson – and her co-workers got to see the climb had been a success.

“As her Taylorsville family, we were so excited to see Karyn’s picture before she returned,” Overson said. “I’m not sure whether she emailed it to someone – or posted it somewhere online – but it was fun to see. I know she was planning the trip for a long time, and did a

lot of walking to train for it. We were happy for her and her husband.”

Once the mountain climb was behind them, Karyn and Brian turned their attention to lions, wildebeests, zebras, water buffaloes, giraffes, and the like.

“We were above the timberline for most of our Mt. Kilimanjaro hike, so about the only animals we saw were during the first few days: blue monkeys (named for the bluish tint of their face) and (black and white) colobus monkeys – oh, and ravens,” Karyn added. “But we knew we would see plenty of animals during our 4-day safari after the hike – and we did.”

The Kerdolffs got to rest their legs as they visited Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park.

“We were around a lot of big animals and you never saw anyone outside their vehicle,

‘fun’ than the other – but finishing the climb was definitely more personally satisfying.”

After hiring on with Taylorsville City in August 2019, Karyn is now back at her planning department desk – undoubtedly with a few of the African adventure pictures somewhere in sight. She and husband Brian say it will be a while before their next world travelling adventure. But they’re already pondering it.

“I think next on our list are the Dolomite Mountains in Italy or the Patagonia region at the southern tip of South America (shared by Argentina and Chile),” she said. “But I would also definitely return to Tanzania. The people were so friendly and personable – very kind to us.” l

“We stopped to eat lunch in our vehicle one day, and had huge elephants just 15 feet away.

We also saw lions, baboons, antelope, mongooses and off in the distance, a single rhino.”

The Kerdolffs also witnessed something even their guide described as rare to see.

“As we were leaving Serengeti National Park, we stopped to watch a cheetah stalking and hunting an antelope,” Karyn said. “The cheetah didn’t get the antelope that time. But we saw it running at full speed.”

Kerdolff also added, their time spent on safari was anything but “roughing it.” In fact, she invoked the hybrid word for “glamorous camping.”

“We slept in tents most of the nights – but they were equipped with running water and showers,” she said. “This was real glamping – particularly compared to the way we normally

backpack and camp. We also had guides walk us back to our tents each night. They weren’t so worried about big animals like lions attacking. They were watching out more for hyenas, who like to take off with your boots or other things.”

Karyn says she and Brian never would have spent the time and money to go to Tanzania just for the safari portion of their trip. But, she considered it a great way to end their time on the African continent.

“The (Mt. Kilimanjaro) hike was definitely the main thing – the biggest part of our trip – and it was such a relief once we finished that,” she concluded. “We knew we had accomplished what we set out to do. But the safari was such a fun, contrasting activity. It was a lot of sitting and riding. But seeing the wildlife was incredible. They were just two totally different things. I can’t really say one was more

Salty Peaks helps support ‘appreciative’ snowboarding community

W

ith the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in the rearview mirror, it’s important to look at the future of winter sports in the state of Utah. Salty Peaks is a local store that’s helping with that.

“Salty Peaks is a skate and snowboard specialty shop that caters to passionate individuals and beginners alike,” said store founder Dennis Nazari. “There is not much we can’t do. We can fix just about anything from broken BOA boot laces and dials, replace missing binding parts, fill avalanche airbags, and do repairs on snowboards that other shops just cringe at.”

The store was founded by Nazari and several other dedicated snowboarders and skateboarders. While Utah does boast the “Greatest Snow on Earth,” boards of all seasons require repairs to keep their riders cruising on whatever terrain they choose.

Salt Lake City is making a push to host the Winter Olympics again in 2030 or 2034.

It wasn’t long ago that they hosted the 2002 Games. ​​“In the short term the Olympics itself while in Salt Lake City seemed to be good for those renting out their home or selling event tickets or souvenirs, it hurt many local businesses,” Nazari said. “A lot of riders left town during the melee of Olympic se-

curity and travel restrictions. Whether they realized it or not, they avoided the area due to the rising rates for lift tickets, food and lodging.”

While there were some pros and cons to the Winter Olympics back in 2002, it was an overall positive branding opportunity for winter sports in Utah.

“On the flip side, it has been awesome for the long-term exposure to the greatest snow on earth (Utah) and snowboarding,” Nazari said. “It has led to a continued growth in snowboard participation and retention rates and fueled the population growth we have seen in the state over the last 20 years.”

While it has been two decades since the Winter Olympics came to Salt Lake City, it hasn’t been high on the radar for some in the snowboarding community.

“I haven't really kept up on all the Olympic happenings unless it had something to do with the US Snowboard Team athletes,” Nazari said. “In the snowboard community, the Olympics can be just as divisive as politics and mask mandates. Some high profile pro snowboarders have boycotted the Olympics or come out publicly over the years against the IOC or FISC with claims of skier control of snowboard events

or outright corruption.”

While some snowboarding companies sponsor top riders, Salty Peaks has taken a different approach.

“Salty Peaks pioneered the concept of shop teams in the beginning that helped up and coming riders get connected with local reps and manufacturers to use the shop as a stepping stone to greater things,” Nazari said. “While there were many success stories over the years, the concept of a shop team has diminished in recent years and like so many other shops and brands that have quit doing pro-model boards. They are realizing it does not increase sales and quite often can turn into an over-bloated drama filled and expensive headache. A small percentage of riders have an entitlement complex which is ruining it for others. So while we still support riders today, we are not looking for the quote on quote ‘top pro riders.’ We tend to support those who are approachable, personable, have a great attitude, and most importantly are appreciative of the support.”

Salty Peaks is also not shy about offering advice to beginning or aspiring riders.

“They should explain how a snowboard functions on snow before you ever touch the snow and can show you the best way to catch an edge and get thrown violently to the ground so you know what not to do.”

There are different types of perks that resorts will offer to new riders as well.

“Most resorts have awesome instructors that have been instructing for years,” Nazari said. “Most resorts have specific beginner hills with low priced lift tickets in a secluded part of the hill with a mellow

pitch where traffic is light. You are there with others that are learning as well which helps take the fear and intimidation away from learning.”

“Brighton has one of the best places called the Explorer Lift,” Nazari said.

Community gardens receive a makeover worth $3,000

nder the financial matters discussed at the March 14 Millcreek City Council meeting, was an appropriation for up to $3,000 to the International Rescue Committee. Following the public hearing was the approval of the government grant to improve community gardens which serve primarily refugee communities.

“Community gardens are something that Millcreek residents have expressed interest in and this is certainly a worthy cause to pay our refugee community,” said Mayor Jeff Silvestrini.

The International Rescue Committee is an organization which assists refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture, and other immigrants from around the world.

The IRC sent a request to Promise Utah to improve the community gardens at Canyon Rim Park and Sunnyvale Park, both in Millcreek. The request is to set up a gardening shed where there is none right now. For the garden in the Canyon Rim neighborhood, $1,000 will help improve garden beds. With the change made, the garden will become more productive and in less disarray.

The money for Canyon Rim is split with $2,000 coming from community service projects on the Promise budget, and $1,000 from prior fund designation.

Already, this grant is affordable for the city budget.

neville Research produced a report Feb. 24, that concludes the grant is worthy of endeavor.

One concern expressed was the safety of investments made to the gardens. In particular, would the sheds get broken into? The actual problem was the inventory of supplies because gardening instruments were often left outside and then lost. The shed would help to organize said supplies and provide security to those investments.

“They anticipate a lot less loss of supplies which has been more of a problem than theft…by actually having a shed that will lock…and help with that,” said another council meeting attendee.

Sunnyvale Park has an established past of growing and selling organic produce making “great use” of their resources according to Silvestrini. The garden is well tended for its benefit to residents and is done so without waste. l

Public input sought for new district boundaries in Millcreek

M

illcreek is growing.

Population growth since 2010 has increased by 2% to a total of 63,380 residents which is the reason why redistricting is necessary as dictated by law to equalize the number of people in each district.

The Utah Legislature recently approved new congressional districts following which the Millcreek City Council will adapt to the change within six months.

Gov. Spencer Cox signed the new state legislation Nov. 16, 2021.

Proposed changes are open to public review and further modifications to equalize populations, address logistics, and keep current council members representing the residents who chose them. The proposed maps have been prepared by city staff based on the guidance of the Utah Independent Redistricting Commission.

Districts 1 and 2 will be downsizing in geographical terms because they have the most demonstrated population growth.

Millcreek student wins Gallaudet University’s National Literacy Contest

arah Gubler, an 11th-grade student at the Jean Massieu School of the Deaf in Salt Lake City recently won first place in Gallaudet University’s National Literacy Competition. Gubler, who competed against other middle and high school-aged students, actually ranked in two different categories—American Sign Language (ASL) Poetry and ASL Handshapes.

Gubler walked away with $200 and wellearned acclaim for her poetry contribution.

Gallaudet University, the institution that hosts the competition, is a private federally chartered university in Washington, D.C., that provides higher education tailored specifically for those who are deaf and/or hard of hearing. Their National Literacy Competition is an annual writing event that is open to all deaf and/or hard of hearing students grades two through 12 nationwide.

According to the parameters of the competition “to participate, students must create original written or [American Sign Language] submissions in accordance with the year’s theme. The purpose of the competition is to give deaf and hard of hearing students the opportunity to showcase their abilities, as well as instill pride and ownership in their work.”

Gubler placed first in the Deaf Plus ASL Poetry Division with a poem of hers that was performed using American Sign Language. The poem follows the story of a fire-breathing dragon as it destroys a village, dives for fish, and finally returns to its lair for the night.

When asked about her inspiration and creative process regarding the poem and its origins, Sarah, who communicates using American Sign Language, said, “Yeah, I just created the poem myself. I made up this story. I wrote a story about a dragon from a long time ago, so I took on the role of the dragon in my poetry and came up with the vocab myself and signed the story.”

Sarah also credits a teacher of hers, Yvonne Montalette, for helping her develop the foundation of her poem. “I first got the idea [of the dragon] from my teacher.

She helped me come up with the poetry and she supported me through that. Then [we started adding details] and I signed the poetry myself. It took a lot of practice to remember everything and sign everything correctly,” she said.

Gubler was excited when she found out she had won the contest. However, she thoroughly enjoyed the entire process from brainstorming to bringing her work to life.

“It was so fun for me to, you know, create this poem. And to try something new. And to win first place. It was all so just exciting

Gubler, who is both deaf and blind, has a condition called coloboma of the retina. Essentially, her vision is compromised by a series of large blind spots. While this diagnosis might be a roadblock to some, Gubler has found ways to use it to her advantage. Her channeling of emotions and dialogue through American Sign Language is an art in itself, and something she excels at. Incidentally, Gubler has won the National Literacy Competition before, taking home first place honors in eighth, ninth, 10th and now 11th grade.

Many of Gubler’s peers and educators expressed congratulations with Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind Superintendent Joel Coleman saying, “We are very proud of Sarah Gubler. She is a great example of a student who is able to learn and thrive with personalized, student-centered education. We coach our students to always remember if they can’t see, hear, or both, there is still so much they can do to become capable adults who can contribute to society.” l

Ukraine rally gives residents real-time opportunities to send aid

n Saturday, March 26, the cities of Holladay and Millcreek, in partnership with the International Rescue Committee, hosted a community rally to support civilians in war-torn Ukraine.

With the familiar, folksy sounds of local band Winterwood emanating from the gazebo in Holladay City Park, surrounded by yellow and blue flags rustling in the breeze, local residents joined the mayors of Holladay and Millcreek as well as representatives from several nonprofit organizations, learning about ways to send aid to Ukraine.

The International Rescue Committee, Utah Ukrainian Association and Balance Insider were on hand to answer questions about donations and how aid is getting to Ukraine and the surrounding countries who are supporting civilians fleeing conflict.

Local residents were able to make donations and meet members of the organizations, many of whom had first-hand stories about families struggling to survive.

Holladay Mayor Rob Dahle and Millcreek Mayor Jeff Silvestrini circulated, speaking to residents about ongoing efforts to help in Ukraine and what can be done from their own cities. “It’s crushing to me we are having this conflict in 2022, '' Silvestrini said. “We aren’t going to lose focus on this.”

Katy Brooksby, from Holladay, was moved by the joint-city effort to aid Ukraine, saying “it’s overwhelming that we can participate, it’s so touching.” Brooksby was moved to tears hearing stories from Ukraine emigrants, and was grateful to have the opportunity to make a donation that goes directly to support Ukraine.

“You can do things that matter,” said Dahle, hoping that residents will feel relief when they learn about the different organizations and ways to support the people of Ukraine. “There is a tremendous amount of aid needed,” he said, adding that the power of community coming together will make a difference.

The two cities partnered with the International Rescue Committee, a nonprofit that focuses on helping people affected by humanitarian crises. IRC was accepting donations that will go directly to efforts to aid civilians in Ukraine with food, medical care and emergency support.

The IRC is currently working in Poland aiding displaced Ukrainian families.

Galyna Flohr, from Mykolaiv, Ukraine, moved to Sandy 12 years ago. She is raising money for Balance Insider, a group that delivers free groceries to families and the elderly who don’t have access to food in Kiev, Ukraine.

“Right now, it is most important that everybody talk about Ukraine,” said Flohr. Her father is in Ukraine, and it is difficult for Flohr, speaking to him only sporadically, not knowing if the phone connection will be working or his home destroyed.

Representatives from the Utah Ukrainian Association handed out blue and yellow ribbons with which to decorate homes as a show of support to the Ukrainian people. Residents had the opportunity to learn about and sign a petition seeking permission for Ukranians to join their families stateside.

“We are very grateful to the IRC for all they are doing,” said Catherine Stokes, a volunteer with the UUA who is helping with the upcoming UUA Hope and Healing Day for Ukrainians living in Utah.

Comcast invests in Tech-Moms, a program that encourages women to move into tech

omcast Corporation is investing in women. The global media and technology company is the Title Sponsor for the Tech-Moms technical training program where Comcast will provide $42,000 in cash and support in 2022, in addition to providing $15,000 in support last year.

Tech-Moms is a nonprofit organization that helps women move into, or return to, technology careers. Students in the program are given opportunities to build skills and knowledge to transition to a profitable tech position.

“I just started my second week of training with a tech company in Springville, [Utah],” said Tech-Moms graduate, Janice Knudsen. “It pays more and has benefits that my old job did not. There are many opportunities for advancement since this company hires first from within.”

More than 200 women have gone through the TechMom program, which partners with five higher-ed institutions, and 80 women are currently participating in the program. Additionally, 300+ applications are waiting for a spot to open.

Students are introduced to a variety of technical careers and given a strong support network as they move forward. As the women transition into the tech industry, they discover hidden abilities that help them build confidence in this ever-growing field.

“After graduating from Tech-Moms, I have had the confidence to apply for new jobs,” said Rosa Griffin.

“Next week, I am going back to college, and I applied for a new job that I dared to apply for, even when I didn’t

meet the college requirement. Two days later they offered me the job. The only condition was that I would go back to school and start working towards my degree. My salary has had a great increase too! I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to be part of Tech-Moms.”

Female golfers will mix business and fun at the Copper Rock Championships in April

F

ormer Utah Senator Pat Jones understands not all business discussions happen in the office. Often, valuable deals are made on a golf course. When she realized many women aren’t usually involved in golf tournaments, she understood how often they are left out of important business decisions.

As the CEO of the Women’s Leadership Insititute, Jones organized a women’s golf clinic and tournament where they could build relationships, learn the basics of game and golf etiquette, participate in a scramble, and put themselves in a better position for inclusion.

“What I’ve learned, and I knew it intuitively, is that golf is the language of business,” Jones said. “That’s just how business has worked for so many years. It’s important for women to learn a sport that can help further their careers.”

The program was so successful that the WLI entered into an exclusive three-year charity partnership with the LPGA Epson Tour at the Copper Rock Golf Course near Hurricane, Utah.

The event is a week-long immersion for female leaders in Utah with the opportunity to play with top golfers and network with other professionals.

This year’s Copper Rock Championship event will run from April 18-23 and feature 220 pro female golfers. Last year’s event was a success, although Jones admitted she was a little intimidated playing with pro golfers. She even took a few lessons.

“I felt I had to play in the Pro-Am,” she said. “Since I was encouraging women, I felt I had to walk the talk. I can’t wait to go again this year. The pro golfers were so generous with their time and advice.”

The event starts on Monday, with the WLI Pro-Am, fol-

lowed by a Meet the Pros Night on Tuesday. Wednesday is the ElevateHER Challenge Luncheon with keynote speaker Sharlene Wells Hawkes. The luncheon will be a time to recognize companies that have accepted the ElevateHER Challenge.

Thursday through Saturday is the Copper Rock Championships where the women can cheer on their Pro-Am teammates as they vie for the title.

“ElevateHER is a corporate challenge with six actions companies can take based on best practices that will elevate women in business,” Jones said.

The program’s goal is to increase the number of women in leadership positions and the retention rate of female workers.

Companies are asked to increase the number of women who serve on community and corporate boards, establish a women’s leadership development program, close wage gaps, and encourage women to run for public office.

WLI started in 2015 to elevate female leaders in Utah.

With the WLI Career Development Series, companies can sponsor female leaders, investing in their future.

“It’s been hugely popular,” Jones said. “Companies who have accepted the challenge can send female leaders, mid to senior level. When women go back and teach their teams, it helps them be seen as the leader they are. It’s really magical.”

WLI also offers a Political Development Series that coaches women who want to run for office. The program started seven years ago and more than 300 women have completed the course. Several women currently serving as mayors in Utah went through the program.

Olympus Aquatics feeds success of local high schools

A

fter Olympus and Skyline took first and second respectively in the 5A UHSAA state championships, it’s apparent that both programs are aided by the success of Olympus Aquatics. It is a feeder program that prepares swimmers to excel not only in high school, but USA swimming competitions and possibly more.

“I’ve been coaching at Olympus since 2013,” Olympus coach Tom Thorum said. “I’ve also coached the Olympus Aquatics program since 2013. I got my degree in architecture. My dad was a coach at East High. He was a really good coach.”

While Skyline and Olympus have a longstanding rivalry in all athletic competitions, Thorum doesn’t let that distract from his main goal.

“I just look at the group of kids that we have each year and try to serve everyone the best I can,” Thorum said. “I don’t get caught up too much in the rivalry.”

While this isn’t the first time that the Titans have tasted success in the state championships, it was still a memorable year in many aspects.

“One thing that really stands out is the Olympus girls were the underdogs going into it,” Thorum said. “The Skyline girls beat us at region and the dual meet. Our girls ended up winning all the relays which was quite a feat.

That’s something I’ll always remember. Our boys swam an All-Classification record in every relay. We had several All-Americans. Evan (VanBrocklin) broke the freestyle record that was set 20 years ago.”

Skyline and Olympus have both built longstanding reputations as elite programs. There are many reasons that the Granite School District has so many successful swimmers.

“The Granite School District is one of the few districts that builds swimming pools in their high schools,” Thorum said. “Our feeder program, Olympus Aquatics, has been producing a lot of talented kids in the last five to six years. They ultimately swim for Skyline or Olympus. This sport comes down to technical skill. Kids with good technique have good results. That’s why I think the schools are doing well right now.”

Just reading about the success of these teams doesn’t do them justice. Watching them in the pool is a whole other story.

“If you have some time to kill, it’s worth watching the 5A livestream and video of the last relay,” Thorum said.

“If I sit here, I feel like I’m boasting to tell you how great this class was. This is one of the most dominant men’s teams in Utah high school history. The kids deserve the recognition. Drop in on other swim events and see it. All is made possible by the Granite School District and UHSAA. They have made sure that these events happen every year especially during COVID. Our kids still achieved unparalleled success during this time.”

Olympus High School set an unprecedented amount of state records. Evan VanBrocklin set three individual records (200 yard individual medley, 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly). His 50 yard freestyle time of 20.53 seconds is a state record among all classifications. His 45.13 second time in the 100 yard freestyle last season is also a state record among all classifications.

VanBrocklin also was a member of two relay teams that set state records among all classifications (200 yard freestyle relay, 400 yard freestyle relay). He finished as the swimmer of the year in 5A. He will be swimming at the University of Utah in college. There will be plenty of talent that Olympus will need to replace next year as

many of their top swimmers are graduating. Jack Saber, Alexander Turney, Bridger Sink and Ethan Astle are just a few of the many key contributors on the team this year.

Lukas Keele was one of the key contributors on the Skyline boys team. He and teammate Nikolas Skamnes finished in the top 10 rankings in the 200 individual medley for 5A. Jade Garstang of Skyline was the female swimmer of the year in 5A. Deni Cullom is the first-year head coach for Skyline Eagles. Finishing as the runner-ups in both the boys and girls 5A championships shouldn’t be taken lightly. They will be contenders for years to come.

According to a press release from Skyline High School, “Deni was the 2010 Open Water National Champion and a three-time 18 & Under Open Water National Champion. He earned a Bronze Medal at Lac San Jean Open Water World Cup and was on the USA National Team 2008-10. He also holds multiple local pool and open water records.”

Cullom worked as an assistant swim coach at Mission Viejo Nadadores in Southern California. Most recently, he was an assistant coach at Olympus High School and an age group coach at Olympus Aquatics coaching all ages from 7-18 years old. He developed season, weekly, and daily plans and supervised USA Swimming coaches, recreational coaches and all 14 and under age groups within the team.”

The Olympus girls team defeated Skyline by a final score of 287 to 218. While it was closer in the girls swimming championships, the Olympus boys team doubled the score of every team not named Skyline. The Titans defeated the Eagles by a final score of 427.5 to 301. The next closest school was Brighton with 180 points.

Since swimming is a year-round sport, there are several more events going on that require more persistence from the athletes even after the high school season is done.

“The Olympus Aquatics team had a state championship the following weekend,” Thorum said. “There are schools all over the valley that have kids who swim for our team. At the USA Swimming championship, kids got to swim on the same team. We made one big super team.

They take a few weeks off between seasons, but they swim year round. Next, they are going to Texas for the sectionals meet.” l

Student group pushes for carbon-free energy use in Granite School District

group of current and former students in the Granite School District is on a mission to get the district to reduce its carbon footprint by using entirely clean energy by 2040.

The Granite Clean Energy Team is gathering signatures on a petition to urge the Granite School Board to adopt a resolution committing the district to using 100% clean electricity in its more than 80 schools across central Salt Lake County by 2030. It would also call for an end to using fossil fuels for school buses and other district vehicles, heating and cooling systems, and cooking by 2040.

“It includes incremental goals to build on the district’s ongoing efforts to reduce energy consumption,” said team leader Ava Curtis, a senior at Taylorsville High School.

She said the student-led initiative is similar to one in the Salt Lake City School District in 2020 that resulted in its board passing a resolution to move to clean power and weaning itself off fuels over that same 2030-40 schedule.

Curtis and her cohorts have met with Granite board members several times over the last couple of years to get them to approve the resolution. “We’re just hoping we can gather some public support so they

(board members) can see this is really something they should be prioritizing.”

The petition had over 1,000 signatures as of mid-March from “students, parents, teachers and community members,” according to Curtis. “We’re also asking the community to call the Granite School Board and voice their support for clean energy.”

The Utah chapter of the Sierra Club is providing some logistical, messaging, and financial assistance to the Clean Energy Team.

Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley said while the Clean Energy Team’s drive to put the district on a zero emissions and conservation path is laudable, it likely won’t happen as envisioned by the group and its supporters.

“Our board doesn’t engage in the resolutions business,” Horsley said. “The goals outlined in the resolution are not attainable,” he added, referring to the 2030 timeline.

“We’ve been very honest with them about some of the things that are a little more feasible and some that are not.”

Energy-saving equipment has been installed at some schools, Horsley said, citing solar panels at newer facilities like South Kearns and Olene Walker elementary schools.

The cost of doing the same at older schools usually doesn’t make financial sense. “We want to do what’s right by our taxpayers and be fiscally prudent while pursuing any and all energy-efficiency opportunities to the highest degree possible,” Horsley said, noting that the budget can cover only so many things while the district carries out its core mission of educating students.

Neil Armstrong Academy is a STEM-focused elementary school in West Valley City. It opened in 2013 and its construction was able to include a geothermal heating and cooling system. It pulls heat from 200 to 300 feet below underground through a system of pipes to warm a building. “Even on the coldest winter day, the earth is going to have a substantially higher temperature than the air,” said Granite Assistant Superintendent of Support Services Don Adams.

The geothermal system can also send warm air on hot days back to the ground to help cool the building. Electric pumps circulate the air. Several other district schools use such energy where the geology allows.

That is one example of how the district is trying to reduce its environmental impact and cut energy costs. “The easiest way to not pollute, to use energy wisely, is to conserve,” Adams said. Motion and daylight sensors on lights, good insulation, and energy-efficient windows are also part of the mix.

Taken to the cleaners

A

ppliances are like Christmas lights.

When one goes out, they all go out.

We’ve spent the last couple of years replacing appliances, and not easy things like toasters or the electric carving knife. We’re talking a dishwasher, a dryer, a refrigerator, and now our washing machine.

I hated to tell my husband the bad news, not because of the expense but because I had to brace myself for the laundry puns. He has loads of them. But I threw in the towel and waited for his list to unfold.

“Well, sheet,” he started. “I spilled laundry soap and now my hands are Tide. I’d better come clean ‘cause I’m in a lot of hot water. I’m all washed up. Oh, the irony!”

Once that was done, I had to decide the best way to clean our clothes until the new washer was delivered. Options were 1) go to a laundromat, 2) drive to Utah Lake where I could wash my clothes against a rock until developers make Utah Fantasy Island, or 3) say, “Alexa, do the laundry.”

The laundromat won. It’s been years since I’ve visited a laundromat. I bought a chai tea latte to sip, packed a book to read whilst waiting for clothes to dry, and a notebook to write pithy thoughts.

My first impression of the laundromat was the warmth from the dryers and the smell of fabric softener was so cozy. This will be joyous, I thought. Maybe I’ve found MILLCREEK

my new community. Things went downhill quickly.

While inserting 19 quarters (!!) into the machine, I shoved clothes into the washer and noticed my tea had spilled all over the laundry basket. I grabbed my tea, closed the washer door, and sliced my finger open, leaving bloody fingerprints on the handle.

Trying not to think about what types of bacteria live on the handle of a laundromat washing machine, I considered leaving the blood there so the next person would wonder if a serial killer had washed his T-shirts. But I used a damp, tea-soaked towel to wipe it up and looked for a place to sit.

Making my way to a row of stiff, plastic chairs, I sat down to enjoy the lukewarm remains of my tea. I opened my book and looked around the room where people sat staring at cell phones. No one made eye contact.

Now that our new washer is connected, we’re as happy as two peas in a Tide pod. I’ll let myself out.
