FREE SKYLINE, OLYMPUS TEACHERS AMONG DISTRICT AWARD WINNERS

ranite Education Foundation surprised nine educators and one administrator with Excel Awards on St. Patrick’s Day. Three of the winners were teachers from Skyline, Olympus and Driggs Elementary. And luck had nothing to do with it—the awards were well-deserved based on the teachers’ hard work and dedication.

“I’m a former student from Skyline, and I credit this community with the success I’ve had since I graduated. It is a great honor to give back to the community that gave me so much,” said Skyline social studies teacher and Excel winner Tayler Khater.

Khater’s students include this year’s social science Sterling Scholar winner, Aarushi Verma. Verma took AP European history from Khater her junior year.

“Not only is [Mr. Khater] a phenomenal teacher, but he’s incredibly understanding. It was a tough year for me in terms of my school class load, and he was flexible with due dates and extensions,” Verma said.

That characteristic stuck with me because I think it’s rare to find teachers who can be completely supportive and flexible with workloads,” Verma said.

Khater decided to be a teacher because he was inspired by his own Skyline AP European history teacher, Dierdri Farr. “She was an educator who went above and beyond in caring about me as a student,” Khater said.

he second-annual Elizabeth DeLong School of the Deaf’s Art Night was held March 12 and featured artists from the Deaf, Blind, and Deaf-Blind community and students from Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind’s new Springville campus.

Deanna Glasser, the director of Educational Programs at the Elizabeth DeLong School,

said, “EDS Art Night was a family affair. Most of the school’s families came.” Glasser said that work was displayed from local Deaf artists that included their staff members and some graduates from the USDB’s Millcreek campus. “One of the boats was also brought from the Salt Lake City campus to add the Springville students’ handprints to.”

Over 100 people came through the event in slots of 10 or less because of Covid precautions. Educators at the school, Cathleen Marti-

nez and Katrina Robinson, organized the event, and staff spent hours the night before setting up.

The Springville campus is named after prominent Deaf Utahn, Elizabeth DeLong, and opened Jan. 6, 2020.

Elizabeth “Libbie” DeLong was the first Deaf student from Utah to enter Gallaudet College in 1897 and the first Deaf female from Utah to graduate college with a bachelor’s degree in 1902. She went on to become the first Deaf teacher with a degree

to teach at the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind and eventually the first Deaf woman to become association president of the National Association of the Deaf state chapter in the entire nation among many other accomplishments.

“Mike is thoughtful, organized, and the epitome of a team player. He is the type of teacher that not only helps and offers suggestions, but who also truly listens, and tries to implement new resources into his own practice,” Dingley said.

Kraniski said he was honored by the recognition, and loved that his family was in on the surprise.

“I just lost it with joy and unbelief as I hugged my wife Jami, daughters Madison and Ashlynn and son Gabe. I do not have adequate words to express how special the whole experience was for me,” Kraniski said.

Kraniski said his love of teaching began when he taught some English classes in Italy. “Building those relationships and seeing [the students] progress was a pure joy that I wanted to continue.”

He believes that learning languages also teaches awareness and diversity of other cultures, which in turn breaks down barriers.

Driggs Elementary’s winner Carolyn Pearson has taught nearly every grade and is loved by students and parents. Stephanie Gloeckner’s daughter was in Pearson’s class in first grade, and Gloeckner has been a fan of hers ever since.

“She is an amazing teacher!” Gloeckner said. “Every year my daughter asked if she

could just take Mrs. Pearson with her to the next grade level.” “[Pearson] is a true educator, always looking for ways to inspire, motivate and encourage her students to learn. We are so lucky to have her as part of the Driggs community,” Gloeckner said.

Parent Liz Shellum serves on the PTA board with Pearson. “She has 35-plus years of teaching experience. She’s seen it all and knows exactly how to handle any situation.

She is always smiling—even under her mask. Children in her class know that she loves them,” Shellum said.

Pearson’s class was in on the secret because principal Ben Peters told them the day before and had them write Pearson notes.

“My family kept the secret and my students kept the secret. When everyone came into my room to surprise me it was so exciting,” Pearson said.

Pearson has several teaching endorsements. She has wanted to be a teacher since she was in second grade, where she shared a love of reading and writing with her inspiring teacher Beverly Lloyd. “She challenged me to excel and was my inspiration to become a teacher,” Pearson said.

The Excel Awards are sponsored by the Granite Education Foundation. “Winners each receive $1,000 and additional prizes honoring the difficult and vital work they do,” the Foundation stated. l

Stream Daylighting brings waterways above ground for all to enjoy

even Canyons Trust says that “it starts with water.” They are a nonprofit (sevencanyonstrust.org) working to uncover and restore the buried and impaired creeks in the Salt Lake Valley. Many creeks and waterways in the valley are hidden, channeled and piped underneath the urban environment and can’t be seen, heard or enjoyed. That’s where Stream Daylighting comes in.

“Stream Daylighting is the process of exposing buried water systems,” Brian

Tonetti, executive director of Seven Canyons Trust, said.

For centuries, the seven creeks in the valley—City Creek, Red Butte Creek, Emigration Creek, Parleys Creek, Mill Creek, Big Cottonwood Creek, and Little Cottonwood Creek—that flow out of the seven Wasatch Mountain canyons were used to provide clean water. Development occurred around the creeks, but also seasonal flooding happened. In the early 1900s, Salt Lake Val-

ley creeks were buried or rechanneled into straight paths with steep cement sides to prevent flooding.

“We made the water go where we wanted it to go,” Tonetti said. “The result is out of sight, out of mind.”

100 Years of Daylighting

In 2014, students from the University of Utah working with Professor Stephen Goldsmith developed a 100 Years of Daylighting plan. The 100-year plan is to uncover and restore the buried and impaired creeks that flow from the Wasatch to the Jordan River. The plan calls for 21 miles of open waterways and 87 miles of unimpaired creeks.

“Waterways need to be viewed as an amenity,” Tonetti said.

The plan isn’t suggesting turning back the clock but instead creates ways to bring out the benefits of open waterways.

Tonetti explained that open waterways improve water and air quality, provide recreational opportunities and provide potential development.

do so.

Many people find the sound of moving water relaxing, and it improves mental health.

Mill Creek

Mill Creek, which travels through the cities of Millcreek and South Salt Lake, is principally above ground. It is one of the healthiest and most popular creeks in the valley. Most of its underground diversions are done to allows roads to pass over the water.

Much of Mill Creek’s path is through private property and neighborhoods, often residents building fences and walls separating themselves from the creek. However, one place residents of SSL can enjoy Mill Creek is at Fitts Park.

The creek runs along the south side of the park. Ducks travel in the meandering water. The new bridge connecting the new part of Fitts Park with the older part is above where the northern tributary rejoins Mill Creek.

The Seven Canyons Trust created a mobile app of Mill Creek (Millcreek.MyJordanRiver.org). It allows users to discover exciting stops along the path from the mouth of Millcreek Canyon to the Mill Creek confluence. It even shows the Millcreek trail being developed in SSL. Currently, the trail starts

at the Millcreek TRAX station and runs west along 3300 South to the Jordan River.

The creek was restored with natural banks. This provides a more natural look and feel. It is also a safety design.

Safety design

Open water and children are not always a safe combination. It isn’t unreasonable to think that opening waterways increase the danger.

“While there is an inherent danger, it is important to use safe design,” Tonetti said.

He cited the example of a steep cement bank, which makes it exceedingly difficult to climb out of the water, as an unsafe design.

The alternative is natural sloping banks that are easier to climb should someone fall in.

Mill Creek confluence

The Mill Creek confluence is where the creek joins the Jordan River. Over the last couple of years, the Seven Canyon Trust has designated these eight acres as an opportunity area. The property is owned by Salt Lake County and is in an industrial area.

Volunteers have removed noxious weeds and planted 2,000-3,000 desirable plants.

The hope is to increase areas for wildlife like the family of red foxes seen last year. Tracy Aviary is tracking breeding birds at the site.

One of the unique parts of the confluence is that the north bank is considered a floods control levee area and is highly man-

aged. The south bank is open for recreational development such as trails. However, now weeds and garbage abound.

Another unique part is that Central Valley Water Reclamation Facility treats and discharges 50 to 60 million gallons of treated wastewater daily into Mill Creek. Because this water is treated, it has a high phosphorus count, which helps creates algae blooms in the Jordan River. Seven Canyon Trust believes using wetlands before entering the Jordan River will naturally clean the water.

Seven greenways

A new initiative of Seven Canyon Trust is to develop greenway corridors along the seven creeks. A greenway corridor is a linear area along the creek used for recreational activities like walking, running and cycling.

The regional vision is to have the greenways connected, allowing people, cyclists and wildlife to move around the Salt Lake Valley. All appropriate municipalities have voiced support for the project.

The Seven Canyon Trust just completed its public survey. They collected 1,000 responses. The next step is to hold a vision workshop where the public can provide comments on the plan. Doctors share their experience of vaccinating Utahns against Covid-19

I

n a March 18 press conference, Gov. Spencer Cox announced that all Utahns 16 years or older of age would be eligible for receiving a Covid-19 vaccination on March 24.

During the last several months, medical personnel and local residents have volunteered their personal time to ensure that anyone falling within these age groups can get vaccinated. This community effort has led to the full vaccination of 450,128 people living in The Beehive State at the time of this writing.

“The Governor made a call for volunteers, and you can sign up with Utah Responds to be a volunteer,” Dr. Sarah Woolsey, the division director for the Division of Family Health and Preparedness with the Utah Department of Health, said. “Utah Responds is a website, so you put in all your credentials and then you’re sent to volunteer opportunities with the counties.”

Woolsey, who has volunteered with the Medical Reserve Corps since April 2020, is passionate about the opportunities available to volunteer and help end Covid-19. She recommends that those who wants to help work with the Corps use the tools found on the Utah Responds website to start volunteering.

On a typical day Woolsey sets up her table with the proper equipment and gives vaccines nonstop during the entire time that she is there. Last weekend, Woolsey gave 56

vaccines over the course of four hours.

“Although you have to have a medical credential to administer a vaccination, anyone can help. We help schedule appointments for people, we help organize the crowds, we help move supplies around,” Woolsey explained, giving an example of how lay volunteers can help the older population with iPad technology.

“I call this the happiest place on Earth because everybody is happy to be there, because they’re thrilled to be in a place where they’re going to get that protection from Covid-19,” she said.

Dr. Michael Rubin, an infectious diseases doctor that works with the VA, and the husband of Woolsey, feels that the highlight of his volunteer experience has been hearing the stories that people tell about what they will do once vaccinated.

“When people show up, I like asking if they’re excited, because everyone has some story to tell about what they’re hoping to do when they’re immune,” he said.

“It’s a large operation with a lot of volunteers, and the organization is really sharp and very smooth, so that people are able to be guided through the entire process from when they walk through the door to when they walk out,” Rubin said.

“There are volunteers there to greet them, and to check them in, and get them

the information they need, and to guide them through to where the vaccines are and then once the vaccine is delivered, they’re guided to where the observation area is,” Rubin said.

“The mood of the whole situation is one of hope and excitement,” he said. “You can just tell that people are really happy to be there.”

As long as the current trajectory continues Woolsey feels that the number of fully vaccinated people will soon be much higher.

“Utah’s doing a good job administering all of the vaccines we’re given, which makes us eligible to continue to get those supplies.

It’s the volunteers, it’s the people willing to get the vaccines, it’s the medical community and the public health community that are making this happen,” Woolsey said.

“We are seeing the declines in cases and deaths,” she said, “so we’re seeing evidence that this is working.”

Skyline opens new field with win

T

he Skyline baseball team christened its new field with an impressive 3-1 win over Syracuse capping a great opening day. Skyline coach Eric Morgan was overwhelmed with the new field and support of the Skyline community following the game.

“We’re fortunate to have such a beautiful field,” Morgan said. “The field itself, the press box, dugouts, all of it. It’s really great.”

Members of the Skyline booster club, administrators national guard, cheerleaders

and student body were all there supporting the Eagles.

The opening day win is just one of the 5-0 start for Skyline.

At Viewmont, Sam Evans and Luke Taylor both went two-for-four while Aidan Boice and Vincent Rupp handcuffed the Viking bats in a thrilling 4-3 comeback win.

“Andy and Vincent had some clutch pitching for us,” Morgan said. “We got down early, but the guys did a great job of coming

back.”

Boice and the Eagles proved too much for Granger in the Eagles next game, a 5-1 win. In just six innings, Boice dominated the Lancers with 10 strikeouts.

Boice’s rampage from the mound continued in Skyline’s following game as he made quick use of Mountain View batters with 15 strikeouts in six innings. Skyline dominated the Bears in 7-0 victory.

While the first four victories came with

shut down pitching performances, Skyline’s 18-14 win against Northridge proved the Eagles bats could do the job just as well.

Sophomore AJ Jones led the hit parade for the Eagles with a grand slam and Kyler Jorgenson’s pitching led the attack.

“AJ’s grand slam was big for us,” Morgan said.

“Kyler was tough. He went out there and had a hurt calf. He gutted it out and pitched through a lot of pain. He was real tough.” l

Teaching yoga at Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center means I need to stay certified in CPR and first aid. After completing my recent CPR class, the only thing I know for sure is, “Hi, I’m Peri Kinder and I’m certified in CPR” is not the same as “Hi, I’m Peri Kinder and I can save your life.”

My previous medical training was years of watching M*A*S*H episodes, specifically the one where Father Mulcahy performs a tracheotomy on a wounded soldier by slicing open the man’s throat and sticking a pen down his windpipe. We didn’t learn how to do that.

Theoretically, we learned how to identify serious injuries, how to administer aid and how to use an AED (not to be confused with an IED or an IUD).

We were taught the signs of shock, which include being irritable and restless, and I realized I’ve been in shock for a half-century. If someone is in shock, you should cover them with a blanket. I do that after work. I wrap up in a blanket and tell my family, “Stay away. I’m in shock.”

Another technique we covered was how to make small talk with people who are injured. We’re supposed to put them at ease until emergency personnel show up. But I’m terrible at small talk. Someone could have a bone sticking out of their thigh and I’d say, “So, do you like to eat

food? Have you always had legs?” Then I’d throw up. And pass out.

Concussions are all the rage, so we studied how to recognize signs of a brain injury. (After banging my head against the wall for the last year, I’m permanently concussed.) The concussion lecture reminded me of a time when I was 12 and running with a friend. I jogged backwards so I could talk to her, then turned and ran smack into a telephone pole. I saw stars and birds circling my head, just like in the cartoons. My friend didn’t warn me I was

going to hit the pole. She wasn’t a particularly good friend.

Anyway.

We learned about the signs of a stroke.

The instructor said if you think someone is having a stroke, ask them to smile. But here’s the rub--you should never ask a woman to smile, even if it could save her life. Because if she isn’t having a stroke, she’ll murder you.

Did you know a wound from nuclear radiation is considered a critical burn?

Here’s my idea of a critical burn: “Your hair is so ratty it squeaks when you walk.”

Anaphylaxis (a.k.a. severe allergic reaction) is pretty nasty, too. If you have an epi-pen, I hope you’re conscious enough to use it because needles make me faint.

And don’t you think anaphylaxis sounds like the name of a Jane Austen character?

“Anna Phalaxis was prone to consumption and frailty.”

During the class, I expressed concern that I wouldn’t be able to remember all this info if there was an actual emergency, but the instructors were truly kind. They said, “Don’t overthink it. Let your training kick in.”

So, if you’re in my yoga class and have a medical emergency, I’m trained to get someone else to help. You can thank me later.

FREE SKYLINE, OLYMPUS TEACHERS AMONG DISTRICT AWARD WINNERS

ranite Education Foundation surprised nine educators and one administrator with Excel Awards on St. Patrick’s Day. Three of the winners were teachers from Skyline, Olympus and Driggs Elementary. And luck had nothing to do with it—the awards were well-deserved based on the teachers’ hard work and dedication.

“I’m a former student from Skyline, and I credit this community with the success I’ve had since I graduated. It is a great honor to give back to the community that gave me so much,” said Skyline social studies teacher and Excel winner Tayler Khater.

Khater’s students include this year’s social science Sterling Scholar winner, Aarushi Verma. Verma took AP European history from Khater her junior year.

“Not only is [Mr. Khater] a phenomenal teacher, but he’s incredibly understanding. It was a tough year for me in terms of my school class load, and he was flexible with due dates and extensions,” Verma said.

That characteristic stuck with me because I think it’s rare to find teachers who can be completely supportive and flexible with workloads,” Verma said.

Khater decided to be a teacher because he was inspired by his own Skyline AP European history teacher, Dierdri Farr. “She was an educator who went above and beyond in caring about me as a student,” Khater said.
