MILLCREEK REMEMBERS POLICE DOGS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY

F

or years dogs have been referred to as man’s best friend, but according to Deputy Chief Chad Reyes, the relationship between a police service dog and their handler is even stronger than that.

“Even though I loved all the (pet) dogs I’ve had before, there’s really no words to describe the bond with your service dog. It’s almost like you become symbiotic beings, it’s like they’re an extension of your own self,” Reyes told the Millcreek Journal.

Before working as the deputy chief in Herriman City, Reyes worked as a K9 handler for Salt Lake City Unified Police Department. During this he was the handler for K9 Officer Dingo, who was killed in the line of duty in 2017 in Millcreek.

The Festival of Trees this year had a special tree decorated to honor Dingo and Aldo, another K9 Officer, killed on duty in 2016.

Each year the Primary Children’s Hospital hosts the Festival of Trees where beautifully decorated Christmas trees are auctioned to raise money for the hospital. Senator Jani Iwamoto donated the tree that honored Dingo and Aldo. There have been trees to honor fallen officers in the past years, but this is the first in honor of K9 officers.

Iwamoto became involved in honoring these two police dogs because both their deaths took place in Millcreek.

“Because they happened in my district, I saw how they were treated just like a (human) officer and that really moved me,” Iwamoto said. “It took me on this journey of learning more and more about the K9 police officers.”

id you know the Salt Lake Valley is close to the Caribbean? The Caribbean of the Rockies, that is. Bear Lake, located along the Utah/Idaho border, has earned that nickname for the water’s unique turquoise color. The color comes from how the human eye perceives the refraction from limestone deposits that are suspended in the lake.

Bear Lake, and the surrounding landscape, is a scenic year-round vacation destination. With over 109 square miles of the lake to explore, not to mention the surrounding scenery, people come from all over the

world to experience the Bear Lake Valley.

When the lake is frozen over and there’s snow on the ground, the Bear Lake area becomes a winter wonderland. Visitors can experience this wonderland while riding a snowmobile across the 350 miles of trails or exploring the area on snowshoes.

Alternatively, the Beaver Mountain Ski Resort, located 10 miles west of Garden City (one of the cities located on the west side of lake), is a popular destination for skiers and snowboarders. During the winter months, there’s frequently fresh powder for downhill and cross-country skiers. Not a skier? There are tubing and sledding options too.

The Bear Lake Valley is a renowned fishing destination throughout the year. Fishermen (and women) are sure to have some excellent catches, whether from drilling a hole in the ice or wading through running water. Catches measuring as big as 30 pounds are not unheard of from Bear Lake.

Out of 13 species of fish, four can only be found in the Bear Lake Valley: the Bonneville cisco, Bonneville whitefish, Bear Lake whitefish, and the Bear Lake sculpin. In addition, the Bonneville cutthroat trout, Utah

sucker, redside shiner, speckled dace, and Utah chub are specific to Utah waters.

Wildlife throughout the Valley contains just as much variety as the fish species. When exploring the Valley, visitors might catch a glimpse of a moose, elk, mule deer, muskrat, otter, coyote, cougar, wolf, weasel, fox or wild turkey.

Don’t worry birdwatchers, wild turkeys aren’t the only wings. Thousands of birds pass through the 18,000 acres of marshland and grassland each year. When searching for birds, it’s best to visit the Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge on the north side of the lake. Through binocular scopes, visitors might see some white pelicans, white-faced ibises, herons, egrets, grebes, tundra swans, osprey, burrowing owls, long-billed curlews, peregrine falcons and black throated gray warblers.

As the lake begins to thaw, and the weather warms, the Bear Lake Valley erupts with life and color. In addition to the arrival of new mammals and birds, there’s plenty of vegetation blooming including: grasses and forbs, perennial grasses, perennial forbs and trees.

During summer, Bear Lake offers landlocked residents a place to experience the beach. Of course, there’s always sunbathing and swimming, but visitors may also enjoy boating, watersports, horseback riding, biking and hiking.

In addition to beach activities, visitors might want to explore the Bear Lake Valley through the ATV, four-wheeler, and dirt bike trails. Visitors are welcome to bring their own equipment or rent for the numerous shops surrounding the lake.

Throughout the year, camping is a given throughout the Bear Lake Valley. There are over 500 campground sites with differentiating levels of camping experience. For the true nomads, there are areas for staking tents.

For those road trippers, there are RV hookups. And for those who can’t get away from indoor plumbing, there are glamping areas available.

No matter the season, there’s always something to do, in the Bear Lake Valley.

Do spiritual experiences show up on an MRI scan?

Dr. Jeff Anderson discusses the human brain

D

r. Jeff Anderson is usually the most soft-spoken person in the room, and it can be easy to assume that he doesn’t like you. However, he can’t simply turn off who he is, a keen observer of data. As a neuroscientist, he is interested both in human behavior and the biology of the brain. Observation, in the end, may prove to be more interesting to him than interaction with others.

Some interaction was needed, however, for Anderson to meet his wife, Keri, whom he met in college. “Keri was the most ravishing student in abstract algebra,” Anderson said, almost smiling. They have been married for 26 years and have four children. Anderson grew up in Holladay and now lives in Millcreek.

He earned both an M.D. and Ph.D. in neurobiology from Northwestern University.

He is now an assistant professor of radiology at the University of Utah. It was his B.S. and master’s degrees in mathematics that led him to want to study neurobiology.

“I was interested in solving challenging problems,” Anderson said. The brain “is the high country. It’s where you go to find really interesting, challenging problems . . . my goal is always to use rigorous tools to understand the brain and its architecture, how it is wired together and how it works. I love abstract mathematics and ideas. The brain was the frontier.”

Of all the studies in which Anderson was involved, “The Religious Brain Project” received the most attention in popular culture.

“It was discussed on ‘Good Morning America’ with Miley Cyrus. It was a headline for ‘The Onion,’” Anderson said. It appeared in news outlets all over the world.

of Latter-day Saints because they were individuals who had similar religious training and were young and healthy. “They are able to do the one thing that you need for imaging the brain, which is to say, ‘I’m feeling something spiritual right now.’ And that’s exactly what we were looking for,” Anderson said.

All participants were devout practitioners of their religion.

“We managed this study on a shoestring budget,” he said.

Their findings were stark. “We were amazed by what we saw. First of all, we found that they were able to feel the spirit in a laboratory setting. Inside the scanner, it can be loud, but it’s also a private place, and we found that people had reported experiences that were similar to an intense worship service. Almost everyone came out of the MRI scanner in tears,” he said.

Anderson believes neuroscientists have much to offer regarding existential questions of human existence.

Anderson and his colleagues asked the subjects to engage in prayer or scripture study. They also provided religious stimuli within the scanner. “So, a lot of the heavy lifting was already done by the LDS Church,” he said.

called the nucleus accumbens, which is the pleasure or reward center of the brain.”

The nucleus accumbens is also very active when an individual takes cocaine or methamphetamines. Additionally, the nucleus accumbens is active when parental bonding takes place or when listening to music.

“There’s just one course circuit that is associated and very much engaged during religious practice.”

Anderson has also done extensive research in multiple sclerosis. “What we find in multiple sclerosis is that the areas that work together are not as precisely synchronized in timing. So, because the signals take longer to reach the endpoint, the brain, which relies on this very precise timing, isn’t able to systematically work together as a network in the same way.”

Scientists understand multiple sclerosis rather well because it is so visually obvious in MRI scans. “Multiple sclerosis is much more approachable than diseases like bipolar disease or schizophrenia,” Anderson said.

“If we have 30 people with depression and 30 people without depression, we can see statistical differences,” he said. However, when scientists attempt to find out if an individual patient has bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, “We have nothing to offer,” Anderson said.

There is overlap in the brain between different syndromes including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD and ADHD. “Often, it’s much more challenging than people realize to put a label on somebody that you see in your office, because those labels don’t often really translate well onto the messy, complex symptoms that people have,” he said.

About 10 years ago, the director of the National Institute of Mental Health, Dr. Tom Insel, proposed that what was needed in mental health was to eliminate symptomatic classifications of mental health disorders. Instead, these classifications should be replaced by a brain-based disorder, wherein the disorder could actually be seen in an MRI, EEG or some other concrete measurement of brain

disorders.

“And so, the thought was if we could find a brain diagnosis, we’re more likely to actually be able to help people and find some kind of consistent result for medication that is useful. We have been incredibly unsuccessful over the last 10 years. We’ve tried billions of dollars of research that’s been invested in finding biomarkers . . . and after all of that effort, we still have zero to offer in terms of imaging diagnoses of mental health disorders,” Anderson said.

However, there is hope. “I think we’ll get there, but the tools we have aren’t good enough. We have not yet been able to achieve that dream of brain-based diagnosis. We’re on our way,” he said.

With the obesity epidemic in the United States, neuroscientists are also attempting to seek answers as to why we overeat. “The hypothalamus is really important,” Anderson said. “It’s deep inside (the brain) and has to do with a lot of regulation of appetites and desires. We know where in the brain a lot of that takes place, but how to modulate it can be really challenging. It’s a hard place to study in the brain.”

Anderson has spent most of his career studying autism. “And what I’ve found is that there are reproducible differences.” People with autism are very good at local processing of information, such as visual discrimination tasks. “But when it comes to integrating information from different parts of the brain together, say you want to create some kind of an idea that involves stored memories, those kinds of tasks are very difficult for people with autism, and some of the tasks like that are social tasks.”

Most of us don’t realize how complex it is to navigate a social environment. “You have to know what the rules are. You have to be observant to changes in the environment, to subtle cues and integration.” Complex motor behaviors are also difficult for those with autism.

speed and intervals at which the brain “fires,” is also a large factor in autism.

Anderson and his colleagues did a study that was a stepping stone into looking at the brain and autism. The study showed how it was “lateralized,” meaning how the left side of the brain and the right side of the brain behave. “The study said that we don’t really see any hemispheric dominance, meaning that we don’t see some people having a left dominant brain or right.”

However, people still tend to believe that we are either “left-brained” or “rightbrained,” and it simply isn’t true.

Anderson believes neuroscientists have much to offer regarding existential questions of human existence.

“What is our identity? What is the soul?

What is the nature and the purpose of our brains? And the answers are stark, clear and uncontroversial among scientists . . . there are deeply disturbing findings that are at odds with what many people believe. Yet for some reason, neuroscientists have been hesitant to

speak out in public policy and issues that relate to information that we have.”

Like the renowned bioethicist, Sherwin B. Nuland, who wrote “How We Die — Reflections on Life’s Final Chapter,” Anderson believes physicians and scientists must speak out.

“And so other people tend to speak out on our behalf, like with most politicians or popular psychologists — people who haven’t studied the brain, and I think that’s unfortunate. I think that there is a generation of neuroscientists that have been sequestered talking to themselves and not to the larger society, and that’s changing. And that’s going to dramatically influence how people see themselves over the next decades to come because neuroscience has a lot to say and a lot of it is not welcome. And a lot of it is very disturbing, and a lot of it’s frightening, and a lot of it is exhilarating.”

“Neuroscience has to weigh in on the human condition, and the purpose of life and the nature of our souls,” Anderson said. l

One year in review of Unified Police Department Millcreek’s Precinct

T

he Millcreek police precinct has slowly started to grow, but most of the time these officers are only noted in news stories, crime, or perhaps you noticed their flashing blue and red lights in your rear-view mirror.

The City Journals looked over the past year to give some insight into the Unified Police Department’s Millcreek Precinct and the officers behind the wheel of those new Ford Expeditions, F-150s, Tauruses and Camrys throughout 2019. There have been many instances of Millcreek officers going above and beyond in serving the community and making the town a little safer and more secure with each watch.

While the City Journals participated in Tactical Medical Care, many officers described getting ready to start a shift by stopping being “you” and becoming “officer you” as they strap on gear like a ballistic vest, gun and police uniform. They kiss their kids and spouses goodbye and start their shifts focusing on any new issues, like any be-on-thelookout (BOLO) alerts that have popped up since their last shift.

They check their patrol car, gear and all materials needed for the day. They radio the local dispatch that they are”10-8,” in service and active on duty. They pull the first vehicle over for the day and cautiously head over to make contact. A handful of officers agreed the first one of the day is usually difficult.

The subconscious thought that this will be their last traffic stop ever is not an irrational fear. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, “More law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in the United States in 2018 than in 2017, reversing a one-year decline.”

They may next be called into a serious head-on collision crash where they witness sights and smells that can last a lifetime. After providing medical care until an ambulance and EMTs arrive, they are told one of the pas-

sengers was mortally wounded. In some cases they are required to notify the next of kin.

They deal with enormous amounts of tedious paper work. They next move on to a stolen car, perhaps a robbery, then a domestic violence disturbance.

Detective Jared Nichols explained the recent monthly crime totals. He said 2,912 calls made for service resulted in 1,170 cases.

“They were about the same as August. There were 41 cases of assault, 15 burglaries, 75 family offenses, 1 kidnapping, 121 cases of larceny, 5 robberies, 6 sexual offense cases,” Nichols said. That is quite a large number of criminal issues the department addresses every single month as they work hard to bring those numbers down.

The Millcreek Police Department employs one chief, one lieutenant, and eight sergeants who are in charge of supervising law enforcement operations in Millcreek City.

The precinct currently has 25 patrol officers, three full-time traffic officers, seven street crime detectives and four community crime suppression units. Thirteen detectives, two community-oriented policing detectives, four school resource officers, a full-time victim advocate and one secretary work the Millcreek jurisdiction.

Millcreek also has one unit specifically set up to address domestic violence. They provide services to victims of the crimes before, during and after the event. There are four members in the Millcreek Precinct domestic violence unit, two detectives, a victim advocate and a detective sergeant who supervises the unit as a whole.

Detective Steve Rawson started with the U of U Police November 2007. Rawson worked five years in patrol and three years in investigations. He was on the behavioral intervention team and was trained on forensic interview techniques. Rawson came to Unified Police in November 2015. He worked

Kearns and Magna for 18 months before being assigned to special operations, canyon patrol and rescue division. After another 18 months of serving in special ops, he transferred to Millcreek’s street crimes unit where he has served as the domestic violence detective.

Detective Brittni Willie has been with the UPD for three years. She began as a dispatcher, then transferred to patrol in June 2017 working in Taylorsville. While there, she was trained to handle domestic violence cases. She moved from patrol to investigations a few months ago and has been actively working on all types of domestic violence criminal cases.

Tessa Kohl is the victim advocate assigned to Millcreek City. Kohl has advocated for victims for nearly two decades. Her experience includes working with victims of all types of violent crimes. Kohl’s role involves giving victims a safe foundation to be heard and validated using the criminal justice system. For those experiencing domestic violence issues, she is available at the Millcreek Precinct by phone at (385) 468-9627.

Sergeant Michael Mays has served as a police officer with the UPD for over 16 years.

During his career he has served in patrol and investigations. He currently serves as the Millcreek Precinct investigations sergeant.

The patrol operations unit works on solving crimes, traffic investigations, traffic problems, speeding, drugs/alcohol related activity and crime reduction as the priority of the community. Preventing traffic accidents and congestion, while aggressively enforcing speed compliance, was a successful task throughout the year. It was accomplished by a traffic enforcement team and the placement of “speed limit trailers” that show your current speed near trouble zones. They worked as an excellent speed-reducing tool.

Throughout the year officers made nu-

merous arrests of suspects involved in continuous criminal activities. In one example, they developed crime patterns coordinating with other detectives about vehicle and residential burglaries, which led them to solve more crimes and put suspects in jail. Numerous drug investigations have resulted in arrests, assisting in removing illegal drugs from Millcreek streets, which are investigated by the investigations division and the community crime suppression unit.

Two UPD officers have taken to social media to let the community get to know them a little better through the “I’m a Police Officer” page.

Officer Michael Erickson is a motors officer with UPD, married to a UPD officer (Kaley Erickson) and has five kids.

“I didn’t grow up thinking I would be a police officer although helping people seemed to be something I was drawn to,” Erickson writes in his post.

Erickson has been a police officer for eight years, first working with Granite School District before joining UPD. “I’ve stood by caskets guarding the body of those who have passed; witnessed moms, dads, wives, and siblings say their last goodbyes,” he wrote. “I’ve escorted the Vice President of the United States, ridden in countless parades, volunteered for charity rides, and all I can think is, I really do have the best job in the world.”

“Something struck me when I saw that trooper on the side of the road,” Mallory wrote. “That was the moment when all the memories of my childhood years surfaced, and I made the decision to be a police officer. I knew being a police officer was what I always wanted to be, and now it was time to do it.”

Once per month throughout the year, a Millcreek officer is selected as Officer of the Month for a variety of actions, behaviors and decisions. In January 2019, Police Chief Steve DeBry awarded Officer Andrew Jensen Officer of the Month. Jensen conducted proactive policing that led to a traffic stop where he identified a passenger with felony arrest warrants. He seized narcotics while creating rapport with the suspect. In doing so, he was able to get the suspect to provide information on other cases. The Citizens Advisory Board for UPD also presented Jensen with a gift.

In February 2019, DeBry informed the City Council and others about the mental health unit and the great work they do. He introduced Sergeant Jody Sampson to the council. Sampson said, “The mental health unit was started 18 months ago following the model of the Los Angeles Police Department.

We work as a secondary unit and have had 800 outreaches since November 2017, and 3,540 mental health related calls, and that doesn’t even include the welfare checks or domestic calls.” The unit does in-depth follow-ups. The unit has one full-time detective, eight secondary officers and one licensed clinical social worker (LCSW).

Councilmember Bev Uipi asked how one social worker can handle all of those calls. Sampson said she prioritizes calls and does research on cases she sends the LCSW. The LCSW is employed by the U of U and works with Unified Police on a memorandum of understanding (MOU), which will end

The Citizens Advisory Board gave Werner an award. Sgt. Mike Mays was also presented with the Veteran of Foreign Wars National Law Enforcement Award.

In July 2019, DeBry presented Officer Tiffany Parker as Officer of the Month for June 2019. Parker solved three burglary cases and arrested two suspects. The Citizens Advisory Board presented Parker with a gift.

In August 2019, Mays announced Officer Victor Shaw as Officer of the Month for July 2019. Shaw successfully completed a detailed investigation of an assault which resulted in charges filed. The Citizens Advisory Board gave Shaw a gift.

In September 2019, Brandy Farms with the Citizens Advisory Board recognized Detective Gary Evans for his work. She read a statement from the CAB and offered Evans a gift. Evans followed up on a stolen vehicle case where the stolen car contained Native American artifacts that were irreplaceable.

The suspect was arrested, and Evans questioned the suspect about the property in the car. After serving a warrant he was able to locate the items at a storage unit. He recovered nearly all of the stolen property.

In October 2019, DeBry announced Jensen as Officer of the Month for September 2019, making this his second award this year.

Jensen responded to a robbery at Iceberg Drive Inn and apprehended two suspects and recovered stolen goods and other paraphernalia. The Citizens Advisory Board presented Jensen with a gift. Silvestrini thanked Jensen for his service to Millcreek. DeBry said he received a positive memo from the Metro Gang Unit regarding the Millcreek street crimes unit for their attention to detail and thoroughness in investigations. He then presented Nichols with a five-year achievement

with Unified Police Department.

In November 2019, Debry announced Detective Robert Walter as Officer of the Month for October 2019. Walters responded to the scene of a shooting and displayed excellent police work and professionalism.

Police officers are high to a high standard of law. They work to keep communities safe and educated, and train too. We know from the many news stories that officers put their lives on the line, but some don’t know what goes on in their day-to-day police duties. While every position varies, some officers will sit on the side of a street discouraging speeding drivers or just to bring peace of mind to the communities. Police provide a presence in neighborhoods with crime to help people feel safe.

On August 5, 2012, a white supremacist entered the gurdwara — or Sikh temple — in the heart of the Oak Creek, Wisconsin. He shot 10 innocent people before a police bullet took him down. Lieutenant Brian Murphy arrived on the scene first and immediately engaged the gunman. He was shot 15 times.

Out of the 15 shots, three hit Murphy’s bullet-proof vest. Twelve entered his body. Two bullets are still inside him to this day. A year later, Murphy was approached by a survivor who was inside the temple during the shooting.

“She said, ‘How many times were you hit?’ Murphy said, ‘15.’ She said, ‘Yes, don’t you get it? One bullet for every one of us who was hiding inside.’”

It turned out there were exactly 15 people hiding in the pantry of the temple when Murphy had caught the shooter’s eye.

Many officers are approachable, friendly and passionate about their job. The next time you see one of your local officers, say hello and get to know them. You never know when they might be the one who makes a difference in your life. l

this summer. Mayor Jeff Silvestrini said as a member of the Unified Police Department Board, he will support refunding the MOU. In March 2019, DeBry presented Detective Doug Lambert the award for Officer of the Month for February. Lambert worked on and cleared multilevel and multistate fraud cases. Silvestrini praised his work saying, “Detective Lambert has worked tirelessly on identity theft crimes and was proactive in assisting getting legislation on identify theft passed in the State Legislature in 2018.” Silvestrini thanked Lambert and said he was a credit to the profession and the Millcreek Precinct.

In April 2019, DeBry introduced Detective Jordan Schmidt as Officer of the Month for March. Schmidt conducted a successful drug trafficking investigation. The dealer was selling over a pound of methamphetamine every week in the Salt Lake County area. Schmidt also was detailed on the series “Behind the Badge” by ABC News.

In May 2019, there was a special awards presentation. The first was Officer Justin Zabriskie, who helped deliver a baby without complications. Silvestrini said, “He exemplified values of the UPD.” Silvestrini also commended Officer Jeff Nelson and said, “He was awarded a Sheriff’s Star because he and two others played a crucial role in stopping an armed burglary.” Nelson was deployed by then in Afghanistan for military service and unable to attend the meeting.

Officer Easton Story was the Officer of the Month for April. Mitchell read a letter to the council from a grateful citizen who appreciated the wellness check Story conducted. Silvestrini said the citation written by a resident is what Millcreek wants to see. The Citizens Advisory Board also presented Story with a gift.

ne of Santa’s workshops, located in Millcreek City, has moved into full operation. Santa allowed the media a peek on Dec. 3.

The operation, sponsored by the Granite Education Foundation, is called the Santa Sack program. The program was started in 2009 when a group of women saw how many children didn’t get gifts for the holidays and decided to do something about it. In its first year, they helped 200 students. Now in the ninth year, they expect to help over 4,000 students.

“The holiday season is very overwhelming for the lowest income families in our district struggling week to week just to meet their family’s basic needs,” said Brent Severe, CEO of Granite Education Foundation.

“Their children are writing lists to Santa and listening to their friends talk at school about all the gifts under their tree, but often there’s no room in the meager family budget to meet the basic needs let alone the funds to buy presents.”

According to the foundation’s press release, “In a district where 65% of the 64,000 students live at or below the poverty line, gifts for the holidays just aren’t an option.”

It is a yearlong effort as “elves” (volunteers and others) buy toys, school supplies, outerwear, hygiene items, socks and books.

They buy the items when they are on sale.

“We make every dollar count,” Severe said.

They also have a long list of donors, including Discover and the University Federal Credit Union, who are major sponsors.

Sacks are created for preschool through 12th grade, which makes this effort unique.

“We have so many homeless high school students in the Granite District. In their sacks, we include a sleeping bag, a blanket and

something fun like ear buds,” Severe said.

The process

Social workers in schools identify students in need and submit their names. Granite Education Foundation volunteers sort the requests into age-appropriate groups.

Starting in early November until school holiday break, volunteers from youth groups, businesses and the community at large come to the distribution center. They grab a box and a tag. The tag is either green for boys or red for girls and is marked by grade.

First comes socks and a stocking cap with gloves. Hygiene supplies are added to the box. The elves take a turn to grab a blanket. They progress to the proper room for school supplies and a book. They return to the big area for an age-appropriate toy and a stuffed animal toy. The items are ready to be sacked.

“We have found that while teenage boys are good at picking, they aren’t so good at sacking. We need to do it,” a long-time grandma elf explained.

The items are sacked and a ribbon tied around the top. The sacks are stacked for the social worker.

The social worker picks up the sacks and distributes them to parents. Severe explained that often the parents will break up the sack.

The toy will be from Santa while the other items will be wrapped for Christmas Day. This allows children to experience the thrill of ripping off wrapping paper.

“Every child deserves a toy. Often children in lower-income families already have a stigma attached to them. By providing Santa Sacks to them, they are now equal with their peers, and they can say that Santa did visit them,” Severe said.

During her time working on the bill, she got to know Reyes and Aldo’s handler, Luis Lovato. She also learned about the many accomplishments of these two K9 officers and educated herself on the rigorous training and impressive work all police dogs do.

According to Reyes, training starts when a dog is very young or green, about two to two and a half years old. It’s a rigorous training process between three to six months of 40 hours a week before they’re certified. All of their training is spent with their handler, so they bond during that time. Even after they are operating as a police dog they continue learning and training a minimum of eight to 10 hours a week.

And, as Iwamoto learned, once they are trained they perform a variety of highly valuable jobs. These include finding criminals, locating missing persons, and finding drugs and explosives. More recently dogs have been trained to sniff out memory devices to aid in child pornography cases.

After becoming so attached to the issue, Iwamoto wanted another way to honor these fallen heroes. Since she’s also on the board for the Children’s Hospital, the Festival of Trees was the perfect fit.

“I’ve gone to the Festival of Trees, but never to opening night. I really didn’t know what it entailed to do a tree. It’s more involved than I thought, but it’s been a really neat experience,” Iwamoto said. “As a board member, I’m getting to see it firsthand every step of the way.”

Iwamoto explained that just decorating the tree was much more labor-intensive than she realized. Because the trees are auctioned, they are transported after the festival to whoever bought them. This means the tree and all its ornaments have to be sturdy enough to survive the trip. In the end, it took a combined effort from Iwamoto, her friends, and members of the Salt Lake City UPD to donate ornaments and decorate the tree. It was important to all of them the tree paid tribute to the lives of Dingo and Aldo.

Along with that, the UPD donated a tree skirt and a day with a K9 officer to be auctioned along with the tree.

Iwamoto also reached out to Lovato and Reyes, who helped decorate the tree.

“Of course I agreed and appreciate her idea to memorialize two dogs, that saved my life, in that way,” Reyes said.

The tree was meant to pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of service dogs.

For Reyes, this is even more personal because of his time and connection with Dingo.

“I’ve been a dog owner for my whole life. My dad actually raised Labradors and trained them for field trials and sporting purposes. So, I got into dogs at a young

age, and I’ve owned many of them over my life,” Reyes said. “Once I was in K9 and partnered up with Dingo, I can say without any doubt or hesitation that the bond that develops between a police service dog and their handler is like no other bond or experience I’ve had.”

Reyes believes this is due in part to the sheer amount of time spent together.

Police dogs are not just with their handlers for the 40-hours-plus workweek; they also live together. Dingo went on family vacations with Reyes and was considered a part of the family. As Reyes said, he spent more time with Dingo than his wife or kids. The two of them were hardly ever separate.

On top of that, the bond is strengthened further by the amount of trust that has to exist between dog and officer. When they are at work they are in dangerous situations. Reyes said Dingo saved his life on more than one occasion, and Reyes did the same for him. Reyes compared the experience of going into battle together.

It’s understandable why Iwamoto felt these dogs deserved some further recognition given the risk they took every day.

“Police dogs have been around for nearly 200 years. Senior-laden Skyline off to hot start in preseason

S

kyline’s girls basketball program is known for its winning culture.

Since 2006, the Eagles have been in five state championships, winning three of them (most recently in 2017) with head coaches Deb Bennett and Lynette Schroeder, respectively. After a below par year by the program’s lofty standards due to some key injuries, head coach Sam White and his eight seniors are ready to get back to winning ways.

And White believes that’s more than possible with the personnel they have.

“We were super junior heavy last year,

now all seniors this year,” he said. “A lot of them played varsity last year and got that experience. It’s really helped them turn the corner — we have some amazing leaders on the team. The skill level is unreal, and they’ve been putting in the work.”

It saw the team jump to a fast start, opening the season with a four-game winning streak before falling on the road to 6A power Herriman.

Each of those early wins were by double digits, made possible by the balance in the team, White said.

“We’re so talented in so many positions

that it doesn’t need to be one player,” he said.

In a 76-59 victory over Spanish Fork, five different Eagles hit double digits.

With two six-footers on the inside with Senior Bella Roden and Freshman Tina Njike and “three of the fastest guards around (Seniors Kate Vorwaller, Amit Lustgarten and Clair Whisenant),” White feels they have the quality to win different ways whether that’s in the post, outside shooting or in transition.

White also preaches ball movement in his offense. “If these guys will just pass the ball, keep moving it and running for their teammates, every time down we could have a different person score,” he said, adding it makes the team more successful and enjoyable to watch.

“Night to night you never know who’s going to rise from the shadows and it’s fun to see,” White said.

One example is the Taylorsville game where Skyline downed the Warriors at home 54-43. Vorwaller was everywhere taking the initiative, finishing the game with 11 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals to lead the Eagles.

But it’s not just Vorwaller, White emphasized. “I could name the whole group.”

White is also running practices a little differently this year. Taking a page from football, he serves as the offensive coordinator

and his assistant coach Justin Hadlock acts as the defensive coordinator.

“It’s great we can focus on our specific thing, makes practices run a little smoother, they get to hear a different voice throughout practice, not just me. He gets to focus on defense and he’s done a masterful job so far,” White said.

As for the season’s expectations, White said they’re taking it one game at a time.

They want a top five seed in the RPI rankings and to make a splash in region.

“The girls from top to bottom are phenomenal and working hard,” he said. l

Local runner turns childhood illness into fitness motivation

By Jess Nielsen Beach | j.beach@mycityjournals.com You see them every time you drive down the street: runners, of all shapes and sizes, pounding the pavement in snow or shine. For Jill Wilkins, a West Valley resident, you’re more likely to see her at a more elevated level.

Wilkins, 39, grew to love trail running after a prolonged childhood illness.

“I was really sick my whole life,” Wilkins said. “I missed four years of school. I had to have daily nutritional IVs and I was very unhealthy. I was always ‘the sick one.’”

Rather than let her illness defeat her, she used it as a way to better herself.

“I always loved the strength of runners. You’ll be driving and see people running in bad weather and think, ‘wow, good for you!’ I wanted to be the strong one, because I’ve always been the sick one.”

Although the fitness guru now has years of training under her belt, it didn’t come easy. Her first 5K was with her uncle, who was nearing his fifties. Her only goal was to not let him beat her—which he did, sooner than she expected.

“We started running and an eighth of a mile in, not even a half mile, my uncle takes off,” Wilkins said. “There’s nothing more humbling than seeing your older uncle take off and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

determined to get better. She began to train and love the workout, and she wasn’t about to pay for a sitter.

“It’s so simplistic.” Wilkins said, explaining her routine as a mom who loves to run. “You don’t need a babysitter for the gym, you’re not stuck in a room with sweaty, smelly people not knowing what to do and being intimidated. You just put one foot in front of the other.”

Once her love of exercise was cemented, Wilkins began to explore the nearby mountains.

“I’ve always loved hiking and running, and then I found trail running, which just combines it all.”

In addition to the scenic views and fresh air, Wilkins is grateful for the easier toll trail running takes. Rather than the flat, monotonous pavement on roads and sidewalks, the dirt and snow serve as a cushion to not wear down as much.

“I like the mountain running because it’s very hard to do, but it’s much easier on your body. It’s less impact. There’s also trail variances, there’s rocks, roots, ups, downs; you’re using all the parts of your legs and all different tendons.”

If you’re looking to start trail running, or running in general, don’t be scared. According to Wilkins, there is one important factor if you decide to embrace the great outdoors, even in the snow.

“Running is not for everybody, but hiking is for almost everybody. You can get enjoyment out of it and you don’t have to do hard hikes. It’s putting one foot in front of the other. If you have to take a breather, do it. Get yourself out and enjoy the mountains. We are so lucky. There are so many people who pay to travel here and experience our trails, and they’re right here.”

As for fellow moms with young children, she adds, “Most people think it’s complicated to get kids out, but it’s really not. It’s no different than going sledding or seeing the lights at Temple Square. Warm clothes, snacks if they’re hungry, and hand warmers.”

If you’re ready to get out there, Wilkins recommends checking online for avalanche dangers as well as consulting the app, All Trails.

“All Trails will filter hikes, show the distance, elevation gain, etc. That way you can see oh, this will be an easy trail verses something more challenging.” Wilkins said.

“If you have a pair of hiking boots, you’re fine. Just pick a trail that doesn’t have a lot of steepness. I like trekking poles, they’re great for balance. In the snow, you might be a little off, so pull out your poles and get going.”

Winter sports for the non-skier: Wasatch Front offers plenty of alternatives for outdoor fun

The ski season got off to a solid start in Utah with a late November storm piling over 3 feet at many resorts as they opened. That should come as great news for skiers, but what about Utah’s non-skiers? Do they wait until spring and summer for warm weather outdoor activities?

from $13 to around $25 per day. Many of the shops that sell and rent ski gear also rent snowshoes. From REI or your local ski shop, it is relatively easy to get a pair of snowshoes and poles and try it out.

“Snowshoes are good,” said Alan Greenberg at Cottonwood Cyclery in Cottonwood Heights. “They’re low cost, it’s fun, it’s something to do outside. You don’t have to wait in line, the trails are free.”

While the number of snowshoe rentals is fairly low from his experience, Dailey said he rents snowshoes to couples looking for something different to do on a date, or to older customers seeking low-impact snow sports. “It still gets you in the mountains, you still get to see cool stuff, and you’re not fighting the crowds,” Dailey said. “In the summer, you have all those hiking trails available. In the winter there are way less crowds.”

While that certainly is an option, there are a lot of other things Utah’s outdoors offer. From hitting the trails on snowshoes or darting downhill on a sled at the neighborhood park, getting outside this winter is easy thanks to the Wasatch Front’s accessible outdoor wonders.

Getting outdoors on a (snow)shoestring budget

Snowshoeing presents a low impact and relatively low-cost alternative to skiing. People can enjoy the crisp, clean air of the mountains at a fraction of the cost of skiing. Snowshoes help people access nearby trails without the same crowds they might encounter during summer. It is increasing in popularity, too. According to statistics, 3.7 million people snowshoed in the United States in 2017, up from 2.4 million in 2007.

“It’s a great alternative,” said Mike Dailey at the Wasatch Powder House in Holladay. “I’ll send people to Millcreek Canyon because you don’t have all the ski traffic.

There are a lot of trails up there. You can also go to the quarry in Little Cottonwood.”

goes to Hillcrest. If there’s an outdoor rink, he would skate there. He might meet some Brighton kids. Something like that brings a community together. That’s important.”

With sparks flying as he sharpened a customer’s skate in his shop, Greenberg talked about his vision for an outdoor ice skating rink as the centerpiece of a winter haven in Cottonwood Heights. Put it near a sledding hill, add food trucks and outdoor concerts, and the whole community could take part in winter sports right in town.

“Any ice sport is a hidden sport,” Greenberg said. “It’s tucked away in a rink.

Fat bike enthusiasts find uses for them year round. “Some people are all about the fat biking,” Ricketts said. “They can definitely be a year-round bike. The traction, and the tires since they are so big, you can run them at a lower PSI. Since they’re so high volume they can act like suspension, if you will.”

In the summer, fat bikes are popular for bikepacking, which is essentially backpacking by bike. The fat tires are great for rough trails and work as well in desert sand as on the winter snow. Fat biking also offers a winter alternative to skiing when the snow might not be so great.

One limitation of winter fat biking is finding suitable trails. “Trails need to be maintained,” Greenberg said. “You can’t just fat bike on loose snow.”

Classic winter activities never go out of style. Go to a park like Mountview Park in Cottonwood Heights or Aspen Meadows Park in Sandy after a snowstorm, and you will find plenty of people sledding the steepest hills. Sledding is a low-cost activity that families can enjoy close to home.

“We’re here just to have fun with the family,” Monica Smith said as she watched her kids race down the hill at Aspen Meadows Park. “We’ll try to ski half a dozen times this year, but we probably sled more.”

People of all ages dart down snowy hills each winter, but sledding definitely seems to be about kids. It is a way for families to make the most of newly fallen snow and get outside during the winter months.

“I don’t ski; this is it,” said Levi Ortega.

“It’s all about my kids. There’s no skiing or snowboarding for me. We just sled.”

Inexpensive sleds of various designs, from plastic or foam to inflatable tubes,

are widely available in stores. More elaborate sleds are also an option. “A wooden toboggan? I can get them,” Greenberg of Cottonwood Cyclery said. “Think what a killer Christmas gift that would be. It would be really cool to have.”

A fun icebreaker

Another traditional summer activity that can be enjoyed in winter is fishing.

“Rockport (State Park) is a great place,” said Karson Ranck of Fish Tech in Holladay. “It has some nice perch and rainbow trout. And it’s just 30 minutes away. There’s Jordanelle (State Park), and Strawberry (Reservoir) is really popular.”

The main obstacle to ice fishing, aside from getting over the idea of sitting in the cold for hours waiting for a bite, is getting through the ice. To do the job, people can opt for an old-fashioned manual auger or a powered one to drill a hole for their lines.

Manual augers run around $70 at Fish Tech, while powered augers can cost $600.

Ice fishing is another way to enjoy recreation areas without the crowds. There are multiple online resources to check on temperatures and ice conditions before venturing out. Making sure the ice is suitably thick for fishing is, of course, a key safety measure.

It is also a good idea to research specific locations on the lake before drilling holes. Since finding a place to fish takes a lot more work when you have to auger a hole, it helps to make a plan of action ahead of time.

Do you have what it takes to be a professional hockey ref?

By Shaun Delliskave | s.delliskave@mycityjournals.com Did you hear about the professional hockey game where not one fight broke out? If you did, please let Jim McKenna know, because he probably would have loved to referee that game.

Hockey, after all, is the only sport with a penalty box (a temporary detention cell) and requires its referees to match the toughness of its competitors.

McKenna, while dodging hockey pucks and punches during the night, works during the day in the information technology world as an I.T. solution manager for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a profession he has had for the last 20 years. On top of all of that, he serves in the bishopric of his Murray congregation.

“I started officiating when I was 24.

I was married and going to school and needed a way to make some extra money,” McKenna said. “I was always hard on the refs when I played, always thought they did a poor job. One of them told me to give it a try if I thought I could do better.”

The Skyline High graduate grew up playing hockey; he started at age 6. When the ice rink was not available, he and his brothers played street hockey. After graduating from the University of Utah, he continued playing hockey in recreation leagues and decided he could, indeed, do a better

job than other referees could.

“I learned very quickly; it is a lot harder than it looks. But, I loved being involved, and it was a great way to make extra money. Later on, I kept doing it because I loved working in high-level games. I have also come to meet and get to know a lot of great people,” McKenna said.

To be a professional hockey referee, you go through a process similar to the players. First, you are selected to work in developmental leagues and junior leagues, such as the USHL or NAHL. Referees are then hired to work minor professional hockey, such as the East Coast Hockey League and American Hockey League; then the National Hockey League hires the top refs of those leagues. McKenna officiates many of the Utah Grizzlies games and minor league teams in Idaho.

According to McKenna, “I was older when I started working, and so I never had the desire to move my wife to the Midwest or back East to work hockey games. Most of the refs spend several years traveling around working games to get a shot at the pro level. I was happy and lucky enough to get to work here in Utah.”

McKenna typically draws the linesman assignment, meaning his primary responsibility is watching for violations involving the

center line and the blue line, and infractions including icing and offsides, after which the linesman conduct face-offs. McKenna is also expected to break up scuffles, fistfights and other altercations that occur during the game.

His day job of working with computers and, if you will, his weekend job (working as a leader in his LDS ward) are, without question, vastly different.

“Dealing with players, no matter what the level of play—college, pro, or youth— you always have to be the adult and be in control, you can’t let your emotions get to you. I have found my faith and perspective helps me do that.

“Yes, hockey is probably one of the most colorful sports, language-wise. I have found that the older I get, the less I care about what I am being called or what the fans, coaches or players yell. I have found if I can find the humor in all the craziness, it helps.”

McKenna calls working the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympics Games the highlight of his career. He called many pre-Olympic matches and assisted the international referees with all the games.

“I worked as a linesman during the 2002 Paralympic Games. I lined the bronze medal game between Sweden and Cana-

da. That was a blast. I got to know a number of officials from other countries, and we had a great time during that week,” McKenna said. “I also got to watch every Olympic game, including the gold medal game between the USA and Canada, which was probably the best sports experience I have had.”

atching his sons’ lacrosse games and his daughter’s volleyball games, Deseret News writer Jody Genessy says he’s watching his favorite sporting events, a far cry from when he was a self-described “fanatic” Utah Jazz fan who painted his face before going to the NBA games with his dad or spending nine years as a beat writer covering his favorite basketball team.

Even after calling it quits, like many greats before him — Jazz point guard John Stockton, power forward Karl Malone, and one of the all-time winning most coaches Jerry Sloan — Genessy occasionally has returned to the arena, filling in on the beat, knowing the workload ahead of him.

“I loved covering the Jazz,” he said. “As a kid, I tried to spin the ball like Adrian Dantley, and I grew up watching the Jazz. Covering the Jazz, I was there first hand to see them, but it was also madness. It was a crazy travel schedule. I saw a lot of airports, car rentals, hotels and arenas, but never the touristy sites.”

Genessy said his routine would include covering morning shoot-arounds to get quotes then return to the arena at 5 p.m. to interview coaches, transcribe notes, look at stats before covering the game. He was on the road 90 days per year.

“I tried to show readers what it was like behind the scenes,” he said. “I had access to the guys in the locker room and I wanted to give Jazz fans a flavor, a feel of what it was like. By the end, I was mentally exhausted, it was a grind, and I knew it was time I needed to change my beat.”

Just after he let go of covering the Jazz in 2017, he was

approached about writing the book “100 Things Jazz Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die.” It has been a steady seller on Amazon and will have a second printing.

After thinking about writing the book for a week and being encouraged by everyone, especially his wife, he agreed. One week later he had an outline of the book’s 100 chapters.

“As I sat down and typed up a list, Pete Maravich, the Jazz name, the team moving to Salt Lake City, Adrian Dantley, Stockton’s short shorts, ‘City of Utah,’ I became excited about the book,” he said.

Carving out time from his family, full-time job and working as a health coach, Genessy spent the next five months, “writing it a little bit everywhere” in the break room at the Deseret News, at his home office, even at McDonald’s in his hometown of Herriman where he had free Wi-Fi and drink refills.

He spent hours “strolling through memory lane” watching Jazz highlights from Pete Maravich (“I would have loved to see him play”) to Michael Jordan pushing off Bryon Russell in the NBA finals, and rereading his nine years of stories, including covering the Hall of Fame inductions.

He read other accounts of the team, interviewed current and former players and coaches. Genessy even put out a poll on Twitter, which Mehmet Okur humorously responded, so it was included in “100 Things” book.

“I did get some fresh interviews, but I also used a lot of research,” he said. “If there was a good quote or information

from a game at the time, it was truer than recalling it three decades later, so I gave credit.

It’s been neat, emotional, reliving memories and comebacks. I had forgotten or didn’t known some of the pranks I wrote about, like Adrian Dantley being fined 30 pieces of silver. It’s a funny story.”

The book tells stories of “the shot,” which Stockton relived 20 years later (but “he only got off his tippy toes” this time around) to point guard Mo Williams posting on social media about Big Al Jefferson’s 10-foot-by12-foot bed, which “nobody wanted to move so it sold with the house” when Jefferson left.

Other stories and chapters got cut, Genessy said as he wrote 110,000 words when the book editor requested only 60,000 to 70,000. Fortunately, his favorite chapter, “Stockton’s shorts,” remained.

“I love how that was laid out in the book,” he said. “I wrote ‘In honor of John Stockton’s trunks, the chapter will be short.

The end.’ And it ended the page. I also loved writing about the ‘City of Utah’; it cracked me up to relive it. I think the ‘Villains’ chapter was fun to write and entertaining to read.”

Genessy said covering the Jazz, he had to “be fair, not a fan,” writing about “good performances and when they struggle.” He also had to learn to read the players and coaches.

At one point in the book, he wrote he received a stern response by Sloan when he questioned Carlos Boozer’s struggling game.

“Sloan defends his players, and if outsiders question and give too much grief, they can feel his reproach,” Genessy said. “One time I talked to him and asked, ‘Have you considered toying with the lineup?’ He said, ‘I don’t toy with anything.’ It was a poor choice of my words, and I got a stern look from Jerry. You don’t want to be on the end of it.”

Genessy wrote about the Jazz at times he wasn’t on the beat, interviewing others to gain perspective. One such occasion was to address the 1992 playoffs that got delayed against the Los Angeles Clippers after the Rodney King trial verdict was announced and the team found itself escorted to practice facilities for their safety.

Genessy also missed covering the Jazz during Frank Layden’s reign, but he asked him to write the forward to his book.

“It was an honor to interview Frank Layden,” Genessy said. “He was the bridge from the early days until now. He’s the ambassador for the Jazz, being the funny guy and able to put everything into perspective.

He’s still very much admired.”

On the beat, he said he had to adjust to the players as he interviewed them.

“Deron Williams always wore his emotions on his sleeve, so if he had a bad day, he didn’t want to talk,” he said. “Alec Burks always gave short answers. He didn’t want to be interviewed, so the interview would be done in one minute. Mehmet Okur always

gave four responses (because of the Turkish to English language barrier), but over the years, his English got better.”

On the upside, Genessy said many players were great to interview, and Earl Watson was especially fun and gregarious. Every interview he had with current coach Quin Snyder, Genessy felt he “got smarter about basketball. He is a good teacher, brilliant.”

Genessy also appreciated Gordon Hayward’s dad driving him around Indianapolis one day, giving him insight about his son, which was revealed in the book addressing their “van talk.”

“I could see how he tried to help and their relationship — the love and support of each other,” he said. “He opened the door into their lives and gave light to the up and coming player. It made a great story.”

Genessy tried to put the chapters in priority order and consulted others before naming his first chapter, “Stockton to Malone.”

“I talked to (Deseret News columnist) Lee Benson who said Larry H. Miller would be his No. 1 chapter,” he said about one of the sports writers he admires along with Deseret News writers Brad Rock and Doug Robinson. “Without Larry Miller, there probably would be no Utah Jazz. But for 20 years, the Jazz were ‘Stockton to Malone,’ and in a lot people’s minds, they still are. They’re the foundation; they have the statues, the streets on the map.”

teammates Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, which he nicknamed the Stifle Tower, as what may become “the next generation of ‘Stockton to Malone.’”

While writing the book may be Genessy’s “final chapter” in writing about the Jazz, it isn’t of his support for the team. Now Genessy, who has more flexibility in his current Deseret News assignment, may be watching the season on the sidelines with his four children.

“We invest our heart and soul in teams; we want the championship,” he said. “We follow the sport, fall in love with the people, fantasize our role on the team, yell, be supportive, wear the gear.” l

5 New Year’s Habits You Should Keep

t’s the new year, a time where many people promise themselves, this year they will turn over a new leaf and bust their bad habits for good. For those that have accomplished this mission, good for you. For me, however a new year’s resolution is more of a holiday tradition of making, and then breaking, an already empty promise to myself.

I have found that if I really want to change a behavior, I need to turn the old habit into a new one. I try to make my new habits fun, challenge myself, compete with someone else and reward myself at the end.

In truth, I have most success doing this when it isn’t New Year’s. But, in keeping with the holiday and my mission to inspire others to save money here are five habits we penny pinchers use on a daily basis to keep a few more dollars in our pocket.

1. We prepare food from scratch. Preparing meals ahead, freezing extras and avoiding eating out will really stack up to extra savings. Not to mention the added health benefit. If you find you are eating out too often or most of your meals are prepackaged, just making this one change can add up to big bucks.

2. We shop second hand first. We make it a habit to check thrift stores, Restore and consignment stores before buying new. If we don’t find what we’re looking for we often choose to wait plus,

3. We fix it before we replace them. When something breaks, we don’t throw it away immediately. We assess and research whether the item can be repaired to extend its lifespan. We are also inclined to do it ourselves as opposed to hiring things out.

4. We give our kids less stuff. Frugal kids don’t have a lot of toys. We as parents expect our kids to learn to be creative with less. We pass on buying the trendy clothing for our kids and teach them at an early age to earn, manage and respect their own money.

5. We take advantage of community events. Utah has an amazing amount of

nless you’ve been living in the Gobi Desert, hiding from the toxic political atmosphere, you’re well aware that Bravo will air the “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” in 2020. As if 2020 wasn’t going to be terrible enough.

If you’re not familiar with the intellectual and thought-provoking series, executive producer Andy Cohen flies to town in his invisible helicopter, rounds up glamourous white women, tells them to act like idiots, then throws a diamond necklace into a swimming pool to watch them jump in wearing slinky evening gowns.

It started in 2006 with “The Real Housewives of Orange County” and then spread like the plague through New York, Atlanta, Beverly Hills and other unsuspecting cities. In any given episode, you can expect nanny drama, coiffed eyebrows, white woman problems, plastic surgery cleavage, mean gossip, pouty lips, cats, jewelry for cats, catty behavior and lots of big hair.

Buy why Utah? Well, the series tends to be overwhelmingly white, so I guess Utah makes sense. And I’ve heard that some women in Utah live glamourous lives in upper-class communities. That rules me out. My glamourous life consists of digging through laundry for a pair of matching socks.

What I want to see is “The REAL Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.”
