AIMS TO EDUCATE AND EMPOWER YOUNG WOMEN IN UTAH

S

tephanie Nguyen Lake is determined to help build a world where girls of color feel safe and confident—first with an empowering photography project, then with a website that will provide education, self-care and safe spaces for Black girls and women.

“I’ve always had an artistic eye,” said Lake, who is Asian and African American. “That’s the best way to express myself.

I’ve always been very passionate about racial issues and have been involved in making sure that minorities have a voice.”

Lake served an 18-month mission for her church and returned home to Midvale on March 26. She self-quarantined for two weeks and then found a job working in a chiropractor’s office. Then George Floyd was killed, and Lake was bombarded with questions.

“People kept asking me questions about Black Lives Matter and wanted me to educate them,” Lake said. “I was already doing it, but it became crazier and bigger. People would ask me for my opinion. I felt weird about it, but I still replied. Then I was shut down. They would say I was wrong, I was crazy. I remember coming home one day feeling so overwhelmed.”

That’s when she decided to put together a photo shoot.

“That night I went to sleep and had a dream about what I needed to do,” Lake said. “I reached out to a photographer, Anapesi Brown, and all the black girls I know.”

“People would say I’m ‘pretty for a Black girl,’ ‘that I was cursed,’” Lake said.

“They asked if I could twerk.”

For the next series of photos, Lake joined her friends in posing with positive words, like leader, resilient, boundless, goodness and human.

“Words that actually represent us and show our worth,” Lake said. “It was emotional. A very heartfelt, amazing project. I was able to manage it and direct it and put into words my experience.”

The images were posted to social media and the response was swift and almost entirely positive.

“I’ve heard from people saying they feel loved and cared for,” she said. “They feel like everything has been captured in a picture.”

Lake is now working with Bri Ray, a musician from Orem who was part of the photo shoot, to build a website and eventually a nonprofit organization.

The website, www.projectblackgirl. com/, will launch in 2021. It will offer courses on how to care for Black skin and hair and also be a platform where girls of color can build a community and collaborate.

“It’s a small community here in Utah, and in the western states there are so few resources (for Black girls and women),” said Lake. “We want to be role models and help them know they’re not alone.”

The website will also be a resource for white families who adopt children of color.

“They’re taking on the culture as well,” said Lake, whose adopted mother is white.

“Even if (the parents) don’t see the culture, other people will. We want the parents to be educated on the culture, the hair, the skin and how to combat racism.”

Lake grew up in Utah and graduated from Hillcrest High School and Utah Valley University. She noticed that people liked her better with straight hair. When she decided to let her hair curl naturally, a young man asked her if it was fake.

“When we raise girls to hate themselves we have to ask what we are doing,” Lake said. “Do we teach them that beauty is fairness, blue eyes, straight hair?”

Lake also sees her younger sister facing hurtful comments from classmates.

“I hoped that things would get better, but it seems like things are getting worse,” Lake said. “This is a continuous cycle. We’re disrespected and downgraded. We’re told that we need to be strong, and that we’re too loud. But I’m sensitive. I’m passionate.” l

Uncertainty during COVID-19 faces Hillcrest unified sports return

ast winter, the state championship tournament was shut down before it could begin for unified athletes and their peers.

Gold medals were given to Hillcrest High’s unified team for the second straight year as they had won the most games that season, but their athletes were denied the chance to play soccer last spring.

That was the same for other unified soc-

cer teams across Utah, which had hoped for a season or unified athletes who wanted to compete in spring track as spring sports were canceled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, officials are still looking at the uncertainty facing unified sports return.

“Right now, we’re looking at how feasible it will be to return,” Utah High School Activities Association Assistant Director Jon Oglesby said. “There are still questions out there. Right now, it’s yet to be determined as we’re seeing how fall sports are doing. We haven’t broached that topic, but we will in the next few months.”

Oglesby said he is trying to be optimist, but he is also aware of what they will be facing with athletics and possible close contact.

Unified sports are an opportunity for students, who are typically in special education classes, to partner with high school peers who mentor them in the sport so they can be successful.

Hillcrest High unified coach Shannon Hurst said it would be difficult to see another season potentially be canceled.

“Unified programs are the one source for these athletes to compete and feel like they’re part of a team,” she said. “It’s their outlet and chance to have fun and make friends with those they may not normally have the chance to interact with because of classes being different in school.”

While about 20 schools support unified soccer and track through UHSAA, unified basketball is part of Special Olympics program.

Courtnie Worthen, Unified Champion Schools for Special Olympics manager, said they plan to survey teachers and stakeholders about holding unified basketball or perhaps, introducing a fitness challenge that they can do with partners at their individual schools to reduce possible spreading of COVID-19.

“We will look at doing basketball or doing that in place of it, or possibly in addition to it,” she said. “We’re not sure what it will look like or what to expect.”

They also will consult with health officials about holding the season as well as schools about providing transportation for the teams. Worthen said that they will be follow-

ing all COVID-19 safety guidelines.

This past year, 22 high school and posthigh school teams (with players up to age 22) competed in basketball before the season was canceled five days before the state tournament.

Typically, the teams comprise 12 to 14 athletes and partners.

“Usually, there are more athletes than partners,” Worthen said about the non-sanctioned UHSAA sport.

Hurst said that at Hillcrest, typically the same athletes who play basketball also play unified soccer, which in the past have been split into two teams.

In 2018, Hillcrest players were selected to represent Team Utah, which not only played soccer in the Special Olympics USA Games, but captured the gold medal.

“Hillcrest is very organized, and typically holds structured practices like any other high school practice. They do well in basketball and in soccer,” Worthen said.

Oglesby also gives the Huskies kudos.

“Hillcrest has done a tremendous job celebrating unified sports,” he said. l

late February when former four-year head coach Natalie Moss stepped down to spend time with family. The team had a few open gym practices in late February and early March before the “soft closure” of schools in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Guymon grew up in St. George and played volleyball and basketball for Pine View High as well as for Southern Utah Volleyball Academy. Her senior year, she was named a Utah All-Star and member of her regional team. She played for Utah State University Eastern and received all-region honors her sophomore year before turning to coaching.

As a coach, she guided Mountain West, Mountain Peak and Great Salt Lake clubs as well as Logan and Ridgeline high schools and was in the midst of holding tryouts at Glendale Middle School when Gov. Gary Herbert ordered school buildings to be closed.

With the new sports facility, Guymon said there are plans to have the JV and freshman teams both play home games on Tuesdays or Thursday at 3:30 p.m., the sophomore team at 4:45 p.m. and varsity at 6 p.m.

Before tryouts, Guymon held a skills camp July 8-9 for potential players, including incoming ninth-graders.

“This will give everybody a chance to

develop and play. It’s important for freshmen, sophomores and JV players to have these solid skills and improve so they will be able to play at the varsity level,” she said.

But Guymon just isn’t looking at skills with her team.

“Volleyball has one of the highest GPAs at the school. It’s extremely important that the student-athletes are diligent with their grades. I’ll regularly check in with any girls who are struggling, but already I’m impressed with them academically,” she said.

While she is aware that the team graduated six seniors last year, she said she hasn’t looked up much of last year’s team that went 9-8 in overall play before losing the first round of the state playoffs to Murray High.

“It’s nice not having a predisposition for tryouts or open gyms, but to look at the team with fresh eyes,” she said. “Volleyball is the best sport and is the ultimate team sport. Everyone has to be on the same page to have a team.”

She said that building relationships is important to the team, so in addition to team dinners, she hopes that they will be able to spend time together to build a sense of community both on and off the court.

“Volleyball is so much fun,” she said.

“I’m excited to bring that to the team.” l

nce again, the Midvale Boys & Girls Club is full of smiling faces.

“The kids are so excited to be here and so engaged in everything we’re doing,” said Presley Austin, area director of the Midvale Club.

“I know they’re safe and they’re happy and they’re getting the homework help they need.”

On March 11, the building closed in order to slow the spread of COVID-19 and the kids weren’t allowed back until July 1.

“It definitely was a struggle when they were out of school and home those four months,” said Austin. “What we saw was kids struggling with grades in online school. Younger kids struggled to turn things in or even get online. For teens, it was a struggle for them to even go to online school.”

During that time, Club staff worked from home but jumped in to help where they could.

“We started tutoring through Zoom and mentoring teens virtually,” Austin said. “We wanted to help them get back on track for the end of the school year.”

Austin reports that around 40 juniors and 20 teens were consistently joining the virtual programming that took place three times a week. Staff gave virtual cooking lessons, led virtual exercise classes and performed virtual science experiments.

At first, staff prerecorded videos and uploaded them to Facebook. “But we realized our kids aren’t on Facebook,” Austin said. “So then we focused on virtual live programming. Once we started doing that, more kids were participating. We were calling everyone down our list, inviting them to join the Zooms.”

The Club also ran a food pantry out of the building twice a week through the end of June.

Pulp Lifestyle Kitchen, a local eatery, donated prepackaged meals with chicken, rice and veggies for families to drive by and pick up.

During the school year, kids are fed dinner at the club, with the option of taking home meal boxes and backpacks full of food for the weekend.

Still, everyone was excited when the Club could resume regular programming.

“One thing parents told us was that kids started getting depressed from being home all the time,” Austin said. “They had nothing to

do. They were gaining weight and being unhealthy. Our kids just needed the physical activity.”

During the months the Club was closed, the staff had time to prepare and plan for when they were able to come back. In particular, they brainstormed different activities where the kids can have fun while social distancing.

Activities included weekly hikes for the teens and outdoor project like making tie-dye T-shirts. The juniors played with hula hoops, made bird feeders and learned how sound travels through cups and string. The summer program operated for six weeks, much shorter than usual. Then the building was closed for a week for deep cleaning.

Staff had multiple training sessions on how to get back to the school year safely.

Schools started Aug. 24. Within a few weeks, the younger age group was at capacity and a few spots remained open for teens.

“During the summer, numbers were low, so we were a little worried going into the school year,” Austin said. “Parents saw how we were structured before and didn’t feel safe bringing their kids. But we changed our entire structure to keep the kids safe. We keep the ratios low and keep the kids in one classroom, not rotating and being exposed to different people.”

Masks are required for everyone in the building at all times, and surfaces are regularly cleaned and sanitized.

Have any positives come from the pandemic? “For me, it was seeing how the staff worked together as a team and committed to helping our kids and families no matter what was needed,” Austin said. “Everyone wanted to be a part of handing out meals and doing virtual programming. It amazed me how the staff was willing to do anything to support the families and help out.”

Volunteers are not currently allowed in the building, but donations of food, cash or school supplies are always appreciated.

“It’s been a struggle, but I feel like we’ve done really well,” Austin said. “We haven’t had anyone test positive and we’ve been able to keep a really safe, clean environment for the kids.” l

Could drop in state sales tax affect The Road Home shelter in Midvale?

idvale has been home to a family homeless shelter, The Road Home, for many years. The city funds some of the shelter’s needs, and the state collects sales tax from other cities that do not have shelters and gives those funds to the cities that do. Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake and Midvale are some that do have shelters.

Midvale Mayor Robert Hale reported in a city council meeting in August that, “[The state has] reduced our funds, everybody’s funds, for the homeless work that we do. The year we just finished we had $1.38 million and we expended 100% of that.”

Midvale City Manager Kane Loader explained that the potential cut is a prediction, not a guarantee.

“A lot of it depends on sales tax and how the economy goes. A portion of it comes from cities from all across the state. They contribute a portion of their sales tax,” Loader said.

When Gov. Gary Herbert issued the stay at home order in March, Midvale City predicted that residents purchasing habits would change and sales tax income would drop.

“We were projecting along with the state and the rest of the cities 8-10% decrease in sales tax. Our numbers came in pretty close, just a little bit under. [And] that’s what we’ve heard from other cities,” Loader said.

If sales tax remains at pre-pandemic levels, Midvale should receive the regular funding. If funds do in fact decrease, what happens then?

“If the levels come down to what the mayor was talking about we’re going to have to go back to the state and say, ‘You’ve got to help us,’ or we’re going to have to cut services. We feel like we...do a pretty good job with dealing with homeless problems in the city but if you take away [services or] officers we’re no longer going to be able to do that,” Loader said.

“Along with our lobbyists, South Salt Lake, Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County [are] exploring what is causing the funding to drop.”

History of Midvale’s homeless shelter

In the late 1990s, there was a ware-

house in the city that was not being used. The homeless shelter in Salt Lake City needed an overflow for men. Individuals experiencing homelessness were bused to Midvale only at night and only during the coldest months of the year.

Midvale welcomed the part-time homeless shelter, covering the winter months. After several years, sheltering for families was needed and the homeless shelter in SLC purchased the warehouse in Midvale and built a new shelter, intending to operate it 24/7, 365 days a year.

At the time, the property was not zoned for that type of full-time use, and Midvale declined the proposal to open the new shelter full time. The new facility was built but remained open only part time.

The shelter leaders then went to the state government to force Midvale to accept fulltime use.

“They went to the legislature right after they got the building done and basically legislated the facility to be open year round.

They squashed Midvale’s zoning ordinance and planning authority,” Loader said.

Midvale’s police force was asked to respond to many additional calls when the shelter was active.

“During those months it was open, we responded to a lot of homeless situations,” Loader said.

The shelter provides necessary services, but its operation still requires funding. Midvale needed extra funding to keep up with the demand.

“During those months it was open we responded to a lot of homeless situations. The city went back to the legislature and said, ‘if you’re going to do this you’ve got to help us,’” Loader said.

The city receives about $1.3 million from the collection of sales tax from most cities in the state, and an additional $200,000 from a state grant.

The Road Home in Midvale operates continually as a family center. Details of future funding will be reported when available. l

Hillcrest theatre will look different during pandemic, in its last year on 58-year-old stage

W

hile many high school theater departments went on hiatus during the soft closure of schools in the spring, Hillcrest High theatre students continued to perform.

As live performances of William Shakespeare’s “Richard II” were canceled just days before students were to take the stage, students worked with Salt Lake-based Panscape Pictures this summer to film and edit their performance to bring it to season ticket holders and audiences online. In addition, there is a special podcast that will prepare patrons for “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” which is this season’s musical. Traditionally held in the fall, Hillcrest theatre director Josh Long moved it to late February to adjust and better adhere with the COVID-19 health guidelines.

“We’re planning things as if extracurricular activities will still happen all year and hope our students will have those opportunities,” Long said. “Our kids are happy to be back.”

Although, for Hillcrest theatre, it will look different.

For starters, many patrons have season tickets, which won’t be available this year.

“We don’t want to go through a refund process if we need to cancel the shows,” Long explained.

Audiences usually fill the auditorium night after night for Hillcrest productions.

Currently, Canyons School District guidelines only allow it to be at 25% capacity, or about 400 patrons per night, with only households sitting together.

Students will rehearse in masks, even during dancing, until the final dress rehearsal and performance, Long said. Students also

will undergo symptom checks.

Instead of performing “Hunchback” this fall, the season will open with a yet-to-be named play, with a cast of about 10 students.

Performances will be in mid-November and tickets will only be available online.

“We want to keep down the chance of someone getting COVID-19,” Long said. “If guidelines change or if someone is needed to be quarantined, we can livestream it or record it and look at other options. Everything this year will look smaller from less auditioning and having smaller rehearsals to more patrons staying home.”

“Hunchback” will be cast in late October or November and will be worked on during classes, without afterschool rehearsals. Long plans to double cast the show or have understudies to prepare in case people get sick or need to be isolated.

The final show will be “Follies,” presented by Hillcrest’s productions company during the third week of May. “It’s about a Broadway theatre being torn down and it’s fitting as it’s the last show that will be held in our auditorium before it’s torn down,” Long said.

new school on the same campus. The new auditorium will be on the south end of the school.

Also, this year, the opportunity to travel is limited for many Utah high schools, so the 44th annual high school Shakespeare Festival will be virtual. Hillcrest plans to enter a video of a scene from “King Lear” as well as several individual events. Winners will be announced in early October.

Last year, Hillcrest took first place in their ensemble scene, first and second places in duo/trio scenes, first in tech Olympics, first in tech portfolio, first in lighting, first in props, first in sound, second in costumes, and second in overall sweepstakes. In addition, four students received scholarships.

The theatre students hope to take part in region and state competitions next spring.

Last year, they took first in their one-act play, “Violence & Son” before individual events were canceled because of the pandemic. The state competition also was canceled.

Local school districts to provide free breakfast, lunch this fall

he American Academy of Innovation charter school in South Jordan is joining local school districts in providing free breakfast and lunch to all enrolled students, thanks to a temporary meal waiver granted by the USDA. The USDA free meal waiver will continue to the end of December 2020 or until all funds are gone, whichever comes first. There’s no need to apply for the benefit; all students are automatically eligible. However, with most locations, children must be present to receive meals, so check with your individual school.

The new breakfast program at AAI will be offered before the bell and lunch will be served as scheduled during the school day.

Students enrolled in AAI’s online and independent study learning programs may pick up meals at the front office at designated times.

“At AAI, we strive to offer fresh housemade meals to our students,” food service director and chef David Kimball said. “We are grateful to do what we can to ease the financial burden for all of our families, particularly any who are facing difficult times.”

At nearby Jordan School District, officials are encouraging parents to continue applying for free and reduced meal eligibility so that they won’t experience a lapse in benefits because of the potential expiration of this waiver.

All Jordan District schools will serve free meals for face-to-face students in the school

cafeteria. Online and at-home learners may pick up meals at specific times and locations designated by each school.

In addition, free curbside lunch and breakfast for the next morning will be available for all children 18 years old and under at Elk Ridge Middle, Joel P. Jensen Middle and South Hills Middle. Meal service at these three locations will be from 10 to 11 a.m. weekdays.

At Canyons School District, Nutrition Services Director Sebasthian Varas said this was welcome news for their communities.

“We have families who may not qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, but have been financially hurt by the pandemic,” he said.

“This will hopefully bring them some peace of mind and take at least one worry off their shoulders.”

Four schools—Butler Middle, Draper Park Middle, Jordan High and Midvale Middle—will make grab-and-go sack lunches and breakfasts available to remote learners and non-Canyons students. Parents or guardians may pick up these meals without having their children present, however, students are encouraged to preorder if they are enrolled online or at-home. Members of the community, who do not have students enrolled at those schools, do not need to preorder.

“There will be some challenges to navigate, but it’s such good news for our students and families,” Adams said.

Because of staffing limitations and safety measures at all schools, meals will be available only to students (both in-person and distance-learners) who are enrolled in Granite schools. Distance-learners need to arrange meal pick-up times with their individual schools.

Murray School District students, both in-person and online learners, as well as children under the age of 18, can get their free weekday meals at their local schools or at these local apartment complexes: Hunter Woods, 11-11:20 a.m.; Frontgate bus stop, 11:30-11:50 a.m., and Fireclay, noon to 12:20 p.m.

Volunteer help still welcome, but looks different in schools during pandemic

oothills Elementary Principal Cherie Wilson says in a typical year, parents, grandparents, retired teachers and volunteers give students about 200 hours of their time monthly.

This fall, however, volunteerism is looking different during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We welcome our parents, but we’re following the state guidelines to reduce congestion, so our volunteers can come in for a limited basis and with a clear purpose,” she said. “We welcome our volunteers as they are vital; they are valued and important.”

That means, Wilson said, that all volunteers need to coordinate with the school for times to come in and are helping in the classroom when the aides aren’t there. No students or volunteers are allowed in the hallway and they will be working with students on an individual or small group basis on math or literacy skills instead of helping with classroom parties.

Volunteers may work from their homes on preparations for parties, cut out items for bulletin boards or game pieces for centers, but those will be disinfected and isolated for a time before being used, Wilson said.

Volunteers aren’t needed for field trips and assemblies as they are canceled at least through 2020, she added.

“Our parents are finding new ways to help. We had some moms help the first day outside with the traffic flow, making sure our 850 in-person learners were socially distanced and the cars moved along,” she said. “We’ve had one parent come in the first week, but most are waiting. Our PTA, which usually is in the building, are preparing items at home and are in contact over Zoom.”

At another Jordan School District elementary, Jordan Ridge, Principal Melissa Beck said that her parents are finding other ways to volunteer.

“It’s forcing us to be creative as we have to limit our volunteers,” Beck said. “We held our back-to-school night over Zoom and our parents love it and want to keep it that way. We’ve added more classroom technicians to support teachers with small groups and individuals with legislative funding, but we’re still having parent volunteers cut laminated materials and are finding ways to put together class parties while at home. Creativity drives progress and innovation comes out of that progress.”

In Jordan District, 6,000 to 7,000 people are fingerprinted and have been background-check approved as volunteers so once the guidelines are eased, there may be more help welcomed in schools, said district spokeswoman Sandy Riesgraf.

Murray PTA Region 19 Director and Hillcrest Junior High PTA president Jeannette Bowen said that usually PTA members are busy now with activities, but this year, many events, such as fun runs and carnivals are postponed, following the guidelines with COVID-19. Instead, membership drives and sanitization donation drives are being held virtually.

“We’re working closely with the principals to see what is needed,” she said. “If PTAs meet in person, our volunteers are temperature checked and sign in, to minimize the number of people in the schools for the students’ safety.

Most PTAs are meeting virtually and are focusing on creative ways to show teacher and staff appreciation right out of the gate. We want to stand behind them and show our appreciation.”

Bowen said that many volunteers are checking with teachers to support them from home, however they can, but keeping in mind

that the safety of the district’s 6,300 school children is the No. 1 priority.

“We want to help lighten the load of teachers and staff and we hope they know we are ready and willing when they need us,” she said, adding that volunteers provided 22,000 hours of help last year.

Canyons District Public Engagement Coordinator Susan Edwards said that nearly 12,000 volunteers helped in Canyons schools last year, providing 93,564 hours of assistance.

“In a normal year, the largest volunteer events are usually field days, field trips, and class parties, however, last year, the largest number of individual volunteer hours were given in assisting students with reading, math and projects,” she said. “Our PTA volunteer leadership gave hundreds of hours to helping their schools and bring the spirit and fun into each school.”

However, this year, Canyons, like other districts, has limited the number of volunteers entering the school buildings.

“We felt like it was important to not add additional non-essential adults to the building until routines were solidly in place and we see how the first couple of weeks go. Then, we will add back in integral volunteers. This will look different school by school. Some schools have volunteers as reading or math aides, some are helping with preparing materials for classroom use, some assist with lunch and, of course, every school has PTA leadership that help with many programs in the school, including Red Ribbon Week, teacher appreciation, Reflections national art program and more,” Edwards said.

Before those programs are in place, she said that Canyons Region 17 PTA will be assessing their meeting situations and will be doing so online if social distance guidelines cannot be met and/or if the members of each group choose.

“Ultimately, the principals in consultation with their School Community Councils, PTA and staff decide what this will look like in their school. If they have a need that volunteers can help with then they will reach out to their parents and community members who have registered to volunteer at their school,” she said. “As schools find needs that volunteers can help with, each registered volunteer will first do a health check at the front office which will include temperature check and health questions. After which, as usual, they will sign into the volunteer kiosk to assure they are a cleared volunteer.”

In Granite School District, volunteering this fall will require more restrictions with respect to how they interact with one another, there still are needs for help in the schools, said spokesman Ben Horsley.

He suggests that those wanting to volunteer should contact the school to see what needs they have and how to register to help.

“Some schools have more needs than others,” he said. “We love our volunteers and still need them more than ever.” l

New Earth Club gains popularity at Hillcrest High before first meeting

where they may team up with Latinos in Action to eat salsa and dance the salsa and they’re looking into a squash and pumpkin painting party. The club may also hold an Earth Day assembly and invite a guest speaker.

“We want to hold community events and raise awareness,” Rian said.

Michael said that there may be a charge involved in some activities, which then will be donated to an environmental cause decided on by the Earth Club.

“We’re the next generation and we want to make sure that we are environmentally aware and will sustain the planet as long as possible,” he said. “Students want to do service and they’re wanting to help the world anyway we can.”

Sofia said that Earth Club will give more students leadership opportunities about the environment they care about and it could potentially spark an interest and gear them toward studying more about the environment or a career in the field.

“We want students to be more concerned about the environment, become more involved if it’s in the garden or participating in our activities, and become motivated to help and provide service, whether it’s for clean air or coral life preservation,” she said. l

Even more complicated is that some members are studying online while others are physically at the school so meeting in person may have to wait until COVID-19 pandemic guidelines change.

However, more and more students—near 60—have heard about the club and already are telling the founders— sophomores Michael Chen, Sofia Moeinvaziri, and Rian and Andrew Liew—they want to be a part of the environment-focused group.

“We want to reduce food waste and give back to the environment,” Sofia said. “We’ll be extending our efforts to provide environment

Andrew, who with his brother, Rian, helped with the share table in middle school, said that he would like to see a reduction in food waste, especially after reading several articles about the topic.

“We were going to do a waste audit this past spring, but that wasn’t possible when the pandemic closed the school,” he said. “We need to think about activism and making the world more sustainable. Through gardening and compositing, we can make a difference.”

The club plans to harvest the items in the school garden this year and share them with faculty and staff this fall.

“We want to thank them for working during this difficult time of COVID,” Michael said, adding that in the future, they’d like to look into sharing with others in need the fresh fruit and vegetables grown at the school.

Rian is excited about providing service related to the environment, whether it’s a cleanup project in a park or planting of trees and flowers.

“We can make a positive change, an impact to the environment,” he said. “Any change we can do will make it better.”

Michael said that the initial reason for creating the club was to create a composting program for the high school and have the club run it. But then, they started talking and realized they could incorporate more into the club, such as overseeing the school’s garden, which has vegetable plants in the courtyard.

Michael and Sofia and another friend, Lisa Hishijima, teamed up at Midvale Middle School to create a share table where students could share food items instead of throwing them away. This was after they counted more than 4,300 items thrown away during 10 school days, Sofia said.

“There were lots of packages of raisins and oranges students didn’t eat. We were able to set up a way to share the food, so it wasn’t wasted. It’s not the effective way, so that’s why we started looking at other ways here,” she said.

Their share table was still in effect a year after they left the school—until soft closure shut down all schools last spring. However, Michael said that they felt that composting would be a better way at the high school.

“We could compost food waste in the cafeteria and other areas, even branches and leaves,” he said, adding that the students were working with Canyons School District officials to obtain permission to create a composting program. “We’re finding a solution to a prob-

If you decide to brave the elements and venture out in the winter weather, be sure to plan a route ahead of time. This is especially important if you plan on driving a car in wintry conditions because traffic moves very slowly. Having the right route can really make things a lot quicker, with less stress. Be sure to give yourself some extra time to find the best route, whether you are walking or in a car.

Another great tip is to wear either shoes or boots that will provide good traction in the snow and ice. If you’re not wearing the right shoes the chances of a slip and fall are much increased, sometimes leading to serious injury.

October is the time of year to get flu shots. Since they are widely available, I recommend every resident consider receiving this vaccination in order to eliminate one of the cyclical health concerns we have in the winter.

Late Mayor JoAnn Seghini receives posthumous award: Brent and Jennie Taylor Service Award At the Utah League of Cities and Towns virtual annual conference on September 25, the late Mayor JoAnn Seghini was honored posthumously with the 2nd Annual “Brent and Jennie Taylor Service Award” for her decades of community service. Jennie Taylor presented the award in honor of her late husband, Major Brent Taylor. Mayor Robert Hale accepted the award in person and gave a brief acceptance speech on her behalf.

Major Brent Taylor was on his second term as the mayor of North Ogden when he took an unprecedented year of absence to serve his fourth deployment in Afghanistan. In November of 2018, Major Taylor was killed in an insider attack in Kabul. This made him the first sitting U.S. politician to be killed in action since the Civil War. To Mayor Taylor, God, family and country were everything and had become his mantra that steered his life. The ULCT created the Brent and Jennie Taylor Service award to honor elected officials in Utah municipal government who go beyond their duties as they serve their communities.

“Mayor Seghini loved and cared for the residents of her city and they always came first,” said City Manager Kane Loader. Mayor Seghini would have been honored to receive this very special award.

Member says decisions, concerns weigh heavily on Board of Education

community—not only the physical health, but how it has impacted the economy and poverty rates, and how it has led to parent stress and possible increased domestic violence, marital and abuse issues.

Wrigley also said that with the soft closure of schools, decisions were made that children, “basically took them out of a normal life and put them in cocoons,” to ensure their physical health, but now they are learning the impacts of their social-emotional

health as they are trying to determine the best balance going forward.

“As a board member it’s really difficult to weigh all this,” he said about finding that balance. “Yes, the physical health, the well-being of the child is important, but holistically looking at that is really difficult. We try to keep the kid safe, but at the same time we give them a life as a child.”

It’s not just how to socially distance students in narrow hallways or listen to how they didn’t have a prom or traditional graduation, it’s how to proceed with education during COVID-19 that has been one of the more difficult conversations and discussions Wrigley has during his 10-year tenure on the Board.

“Our kids’ safety and our kids’ education is not political as far as I’m concerned and the Board is too. It’s not a political issue.

We have to do what’s right. If I don’t educate a kid and get him the basics in reading and writing by third grade, it will affect his entire life. If we’ve got kids that socially don’t relate to people, they may drop out of school.

Kids are losing years of education. It affects their whole future. It doesn’t just affect now, but their entire life if they drop out of school.

It’s more than COVID right now, it’s all the ramifications that come with the COVID close down that this school district is trying to deal with,” he said, adding that not all students have equality when it comes to parent support in their homes even though the district did distribute hundreds of Chromebooks to students who needed access online.

His time hasn’t just been spent in meetings that have lasted well into the night.

Researching news articles and educational blogs, listening to COVID-19 experts from the government, health department and medical fields, and doing lots of reading in professional journals, Wrigley said the Board has spent hours of research “trying to follow the science” as well as listening to students, parents, teachers and other concerned parties.

Wrigley said some days, he has received 200 emails and tries to respond when they are addressed to him individually.

“The teachers, the parents who have been the most concerned, I usually give them a call. I want to hear what they’re saying. I want to hear what their concerns are. We read the emails that come in,” he said. “The emotional part of it is you feel what the person is feeling. It’s taxing; it’s emotionally taxing. I never thought as a board member I’d have to do something this serious.”

Wrigley said the bottom line comes to: “It’s difficult to say other than your gut feeling and trying to do the best you can. This is probably the biggest pivot that education has ever done. It’s forcing us to a paradigm shift as we rethink education, how can you educate in a COVID world. I think we’re learning a lot from it as we move forward and it’s

changing education as its foundation. Look at what Canyons School District has done as far as choice, we’ve got multiple choices and multiple different things that I think after we get done with COVID…you’ll see education a little bit different.”

While differing opinions may tear people apart, he quickly says the Board has bonded during these times.

“We have had several difficult discussions, boundary issues and several difficult decisions the last several years; I think our Board over the last several years has really come together,” Wrigley said. “The Board itself has risen to this crisis. There is no answer to this. A lot of times with boundaries, parents may not agree with us, but typically there is a right answer when you take all the facts in, but with this we go right one day, and the health department changes it and we got to go left, then we find something else and we go right again. This one, we have to use our gut, listen to the science, all the professionals in the district, in the health department, in the governor’s office and so many people who are talking right now and take all that in.”

He gives credit to Canyons’ faculty and administrative and support staff who have spent hours putting together a plan on providing education to students on top of their usual summer tasks.

“They’re putting together a COVID plan, which we’re probably on version 10 of…and everybody is saying, we want you to put together a plan in four months and it’s got to be perfect,” Wrigley said.

During the spring, the Board not only addressed COVID-19 related issues, they also spent 50 to 60 hours interviewing for a new superintendent as Jim Briscoe announced his retirement in January. Another 20 hours were put in for the final interviews, many were held over Zoom, before the new superintendent, Rick Robins, was announced in late April.

“To go through all this and hire a new superintendent at the same time quadrupled work, but the passing of the baton between our two superintendents was so smooth, we moved forward during a time, we could have been bloated,” Wrigley said, adding that when he originally decided he wanted to become a board member, he estimated it would be five to 10 hours per week, but realizes “even now, as a board member, you’re on 24/7.”

While Wrigley greatly misses the interaction with people and being in schools and attending school functions, he knows the serious decisions the Board is making during his third term.

“We’re dealing with kids’ lives, their grandkids’ lives, we’re affecting the future,” Wrigley said. “It weighs heavily on me, as we look at our decisions and how it will impact generations.” l

CottonCrest mountain bike team members increase, competes in first races during pandemic

n the world of mountain biking, Utah offers some of the best rides in the country.

That’s according to coach Tony Stowe, who is coaching CottonCrest, a composite of athletes from Cottonwood High, Hillcrest High and AMES. “It’s amazing, the best in the country,” he said. “We have arid desert and deep forest. Utahns are outdoorsy so this is a sport that parents can share with their kids. It’s the coolest thing ever.”

While mountain biking is not a Utah High School Activities Association-sanctioned sport, the league is nine years old and Utah has seen a 300% growth, registering 4,900 athletes to become the largest in the nation, Stowe said. There are 130 teams across the state.

Stowe got his first mountain bike at age 13 and was influenced in the sport from an uncle.

“Mountain biking has a cool community that has a positive influence with kids. It’s a healthy sport and a way for families to recreate since it’s very accessible here,” he said.

“Parents wish they had this in high school.

It’s very different than traditional sports, and it’s a very supportive community.”

Stowe became involved with CottonCrest five years ago when his then Hillcrest son, Kaden, joined the team, coached then

“Hillcrest only had three athletes then,”

he said. “Now, we have 31, with 40% of the team being girls.”

Stowe’s daughter, Kenna, now is riding on the team and he transitioned from being supportive parent to coach.

“I’d really like to see our girls become 50% of the team. I’ve seen what it has done for my daughter from being timid to gaining courage, learning responsibility and having a competitive edge,” Stowe said.

The team also includes an AMES boy, who is amongst the fastest on the team, and five Cottonwood High cyclists, including one of the fastest JV A girls in the region. Each school has a student captain and experienced riders help teach new riders how to prepare for race day.

As the team was gearing up for its first race Aug. 29 at Powder Mountain, Stowe said the preseason training was a bit different than in years past in response to COVID-19 with safety precautions including symptom checks, temperature checks, face coverings, sanitization and more.

“Typically, we’ll start up in April and go right through October, but not this year. We waited until June for our official practices and jumped in with three times per week,” he said, saying they follow UHSAA with their practice schedule.

The team’s summer workouts included skills, drills and endurance rides, such as a two-hour 2,400-foot vertical ride that would amount to 16 miles for some of the

team’s fastest riders or 8 miles for others.

This helped to prepare riders for the 5.5- to 21-mile race, depending on their race level, Stowe said.

“With our races, typically there can be 1,000 to 1,200 athletes and thousands of spectators, but now it will be very different at the venue. We may just be able to arrive to warm up, check the bike, race and leave 15 to 20 minutes after the race,” he said. “Our girls are very supportive of each other, cheering each other on and wanting everyone to have a good race. Our boys are competitive, wanting to beat each other.”

At Powder Mountain, Anna Hinks finished eighth, Sophia Arlen finished 27th, and Skye Robinson finished 63rd in the beginner girls category. In freshmen races, Camden Lampshire finished 30th for the boys B and Clara Stephens finished 40th for the girls ahead of teammate Sabrina Miner. In JV boys A, Connor McMillan placed 12th, Matt Hinks finished 17th, and Logan Messenger snagged 21st place. Rachel Arlen took 29th in the girls JV A race. In JV boys B, Justice Robinson took sixth, Logan Rolfson was 22nd and Zack Augade placed 31st. In girls JV B, Hiley Campbell was 16th , Josie Paul placed 24th and Emily Villanueva finished 53rd. In the JV C race, Elliot Meyer was third, Braxton Little finished sixth, Porter Bach was 12th, Kolby Butler was 27th, Sam Fisher grabbed 30th and Parker Mealey finished the ride in 37th place.

The team also raced Sept. 12 in Price, taking sixth place overall in division 2, which is the smaller team division.

Individually, beginner girls Anna Hinks finished 22nd, Sophia Arlen, 43rd and Skye Robinson, 60th. Freshman boys B had a

19th-place showing from Jacob Arens and 37th from Camden Lampshire. Freshman girls were led by Keian Flake, who finished 27th, two places later was Clara Stephens and Sabrina Miner was 46th. Generosity and kindness thrive during tough times

mall glimmers of kindness illuminate dark times.

Around the United States, zoos offer free viewing from their animal cams, celebrities read children’s stories for a cause, and children’s book authors offer drawing lessons for house-bound families.

Closer to home, generosity gets personal.

With locations in Sugar House, South Jordan and Taylorsville, Schmidt’s Pastry Cottage began offering free loaves of bread after Gov. Gary Herbert quarantined the state. Since then they have baked and donated 90,000 loaves.

Owner Steve Borg said, “It’s been a lot of work but it’s opened up our hearts. We’ve had a lot of generous people volunteer, donate here and there. We have a flour company donate some flour and so it keeps going.”

All school districts and charters in Utah have been given permission by the USDA Family and Nutrition Service to waive lunch fees for all students, whether they qualify for reduced or free lunch normally.

“This is welcome news for the communities we serve,” Canyons School District’s Nutrition Services Director Sebasthian Varas said. “We have families who may not qualify for free or reduced-price lunch but have been financially hurt by the pandemic. This will hopefully bring them some peace of mind and take at least one worry off their shoulders.”

A West Jordan employee donated $15,000 from his own salary back into the city budget to support other employees who have offered exceptional service during the pandemic.

“I feel strongly that we need to make sure we are telling our employees thank you for these kinds of actions and reinforcing their kindness and extra efforts. To that end, I asked the Mayor to transfer $15,000 to the employee recognition line

item [in the 2020-2021 city budget],” said Korban Lee, West Jordan chief administrative officer (CAO).

Such examples of kindness included a West Jordan police officer who organized and purchased a small birthday celebration with his own money for a young girl involved in a recent crime.

“After a recent horrific tragedy...the mother mentioned in passing that a 7-year-old in the family was having a birthday in a couple of days. Our patrol officer quietly took note. This officer teamed up with one of our support staff and a detective to organize a surprise birthday party (from 6 feet away) for the little girl. They delivered gifts, pizza and a visit from a K9 officer with no fanfare and without telling the Chief or their supervisor,” Lee said.

Hispanic Star is a branch of the organization We Are All Human that seeks to support all Hispanics across the country.

Edgar Carreon, Utah hub leader for Hispanic Star, described the organization’s efforts.

“The purpose of the Hispanic Star is to create a platform that highlights and share stories of contributions Hispanics make to society. It is also a platform for Hispanics of all backgrounds to come together to bring about positive acts of kindness in our community,” Carreon said.

After receiving almost 200,000 personal care items (soaps, hair products, feminine hygiene products, laundry detergent) Hispanic Star sent out a call to anyone in the area who needed basic supplies. They organized five locations in the Salt Lake valley to distribute 2,000 kits during the summer.

Telemundo, Univision and radio stations broadcasted the events, inviting anyone who had been adversely impacted by the pandemic to come get kits full of necessities. All the sup-

Not long after the death of George Floyd and the surge of protests calling for defunding of police departments, the Midvale precinct of Unified Police received fortification rather than opposition. Boxes of doughnuts, stacks of cookies and bouquets of flowers arrived at their office.

Precinct Chief Randy Thomas said, “We’ve never had so many doughnuts delivered in my entire life. I can’t eat another doughnut.” l

Extra care given to student-music program during pandemic

That’s how the Utah High School Activities Association’s music educator of the year Amber Tuckness describes her flexibility in teaching Cottonwood High students while following the safe approach to vocal and instrumental playing during COVID-19 research provided by Colorado State and University of Colorado.

“Right now, we’re using paper masks, cutting a hole in the pleats for mouthpieces until the ones we ordered arrive,” she said.

“We also have given our saxophonists, clarinetists and trumpet players school-colored bandannas to cover the bells of their instruments. We’re not legally bound to do any of this, but if we don’t, it’s just risky.”

The instrumentalists’ fabric masks, which appear like a bird’s beak, have a flap over the mouthpiece to reduce the amount of condensation that comes out, Tuckness said.

Flutists will wear a flute plastic guard, similar to plastic shields, that will encompass the head joint of the instrument.

The specialized masks cost about $10 apiece while the flute guards are $14.

into fitted bell covers at $7 to $17 apiece or they may purchase fabric for volunteers to sew students’ covers. They also are looking into how to cover the holes in instruments and may get puppy pads, which can be cut in smaller pieces for the spit valves of brass instruments.

Decisions are being made about choir masks, which are duck-bill shaped to allow singers more space, and cost $20-30 each, or perhaps, fabric may be purchased to sew for students to use as masks. Another option may be clear masks so mouths would be visible, said choir director Cecil Sullivan.

“They say droplets are the biggest thing (that help spread the virus) and we’re reducing those droplets hugely,” he said.

These are some of the purchases that may be purchased with $1,000 from Granite School District earmarked for high schools’ performing arts programs, which, at Cottonwood High, includes about 50 band members, 70 string players and 120 singers.

In addition, atomizer spray disinfectant is used in their classrooms and additional air is being circulated. Between classes, chairs and stands are sanitized. Students enter in one door and exit from another, have their temperatures taken before they start class and are physically distanced, such as large choirs are spread out 10 to 13 feet in the auditorium and only a limited number of students may participate in the orchestra pit during the school musical this November.

when we are back in class,” Sullivan said.

While the choir’s annual participation in the 700-singer Veterans’ Day and All-State Choir programs were canceled, the music directors don’t want students to miss out on traditional activities.

Tuckness is making arrangements for pep band to return to a couple football games this fall. They also are planning on their traditional Halloween concert since the school has the largest auditorium in the area with about 3,000 seats. Although the patrons can only fill 25% of the auditorium’s seating, there still will be about 750 seats available.

“We want our kids to be excited about being back and playing, but we want to be safe so we don’t go back online,” Tuckness said.

That is the approach many districts are taking. At Jordan School District, Fine Arts Consultant Norm Emerson said that students will use Merv 13, a commercial, industrial and medical grade fabric against airborne particles down to 0.3 microns, to make band players’ masks. They also have bell covers to contain droplets of moisture. For flutists, they plan to use flute socks, which fit over the end of the instrument. Brass players will use kitty litter to clean the spit out of their instruments.

“Our teachers are innovative and creative,” he said. “We never gave it a second thought about not having music this fall.

We’ve approached this with a great attitude, feeling confident that it will work, and our students will be safe.”

That includes Jordan District’s marching bands, which played Sept. 12 with a friends and family show. They then have four performances in the area before state Oct. 30-31.

“Marching band is outside, socially distanced, but all our groups are playing spaced apart. Our choirs are socially distanced at 12feet apart, wearing normal masks,” he said, adding that many groups are either in the auditorium or outside on the track and football bleachers.

Currently, Jordan District concerts will be virtual as will those for Canyons School District’s vocal and instrumental programs

as Canyons directors say 25% of their auditorium seating is too limited, said Canyons School District Arts Coordinator Sharee Jorgensen.

Canyons, which has two marching bands at Alta High and first-year Brighton High, both plan to play in local competitions and at state, she said, however, music tours for Canyons as for other districts are unlikely as travel is limited or put on hold until after the pandemic.

Canyons band players, too, will wear the specialized masks or flute guards, have bell covers and puppy pads once the orders arrive for middle school and high school programs.

High school vocalists will have the special singers’ masks, while middle school students as well as orchestra players, from elementary through high school, will continue to wear the same masks they wear to school.

Additionally, Jorgensen said that mouthpieces for instruments were purchased so students no longer share mouthpieces on rental instruments. Orchestras’ string bases, which often are shared amongst students, will be cleaned between students’ use. The cleaning of masks and use of stands—whether cleaned between students or students providing their own—will be determined by each school director.

“We’re going the extra mile for the students and all of this is extra work for every teacher, but it’s important that we are still able to make music, to do what we love,” Jorgensen said. “Our teachers, like our students, are dedicated to their craft and passion. Mentally and physically, it gives us a recharge and the arts is a social and emotional outlet for us in many ways.”

Through these times, Jorgensen said that many of the performing arts associations collaborated in determining safe practices and are continuing to do so as the school year began.

“We’re in it together to keep kids learning, keep them safe and keep them in the arts,” Jorgensen said. l

Virtual ribbon-cutting opens new Midvalley Elementary, families drive by to wave to teachers

t was like no other ribbon-cutting.

Sure, there were speeches and a ribbon, which was snipped to symbolize the opening of Midvalley Elementary School, but there were no crowds flocking to tour the new school building or reminisce about the former school that served students for 63 years.

Instead, school families drove past the school, shouting to teachers dotting the sidewalk, who waved signs, and through face coverings, told students how much they have missed them. As the families drove by, the office staff gave them bricks from the former

school building that now is demolished.

It was a way to hold the festivities during the social distancing guidelines of COVID-19.

The ribbon-cutting, which included a virtual tour of the building, was seen livestreamed and posted online so it has the potential to reach hundreds of community members.

Second-grade teacher Lisa Kinghorn, who has taught for more than 20 years at Midvalley, was at the ribbon-cutting.

“I’m glad so many people came to be part of the parade back at school,” she said between waving to students. “I’m glad we’re

able to welcome them back.”

Next to her was Katie Robertson, who has taught 18 years at the school.

“I’ve missed the kids a lot,” she said.

Teachers already had been setting up their classrooms, preparing for the start of the school year, which was postponed one week until Aug. 24.

“The school is beautiful,” Kinghorn said.

“It has wide halls, big classrooms—it has pretty good everything.”

Robertson appreciates the new school as well.

“There are big windows, so we have lots of light and everybody has a good view. There are more bathrooms, a beautiful staircase and a big open foyer. The gym is awesome, the library is wonderful, there’s lots of workrooms that are great, and we have drinking fountains in classrooms. Our new staff is great and we’re looking forward to teaching the kids,” she said.

Midvalley is the first elementary school to be rebuilt from a $283-million bond approved by voters in November 2017. Around the southeast part of the Salt Lake Valley, additions and updates were added to Corner Canyon High and are in process at Alta High,

and rebuilds are underway at Hillcrest and Brighton high schools.

Midvalley sits on the former school’s grassy field and will open with approximately 435 students, but with 85,000 square feet, it could house 800 students as more growth in enrollment is expected from the west side of the city. The elementary school is the first to have a counseling center in the Canyons School District, which may be beneficial as children continue to face the uncertainty of COVID-19.

“It is so valuable to have a counseling center,” Kinghorn said. “We will really benefit from this new school.”

NJRA Architects designed the building with input from teachers, students and the community and held a preliminary preview of the school. Crews with Bud Mahas Construction will complete their work of the two-story school that includes a safety vestibule entrance in addition to clear view of entrances and exits and a perimeter road to allow emergency responders access to the building.

The former school, which housed a civil defense shelter, was torn down in June to make room for a playground and new parking lot. l

Want to keep Utah’s museums open? Visit or donate

A

ccording to a July survey by the American Alliance of Museums, some 16% of museums across the United States are in danger of closing their doors due to the financial strain of the pandemic. Even those that aren’t in immediate danger of closing are still under immense financial pressure. Utah’s museums are, sadly, no exception. The Hogle Zoo, the Living Planet Aquarium, the Tracy Aviary, Utah’s numerous dinosaur museums—all of them are under a lot of strain, and if they’re to stay open, need the public’s support.

While most museums do have endowments and financial reserves to fall back on, they’re not big enough to keep them going for very long, and closures earlier in the year have already eaten up almost all of that cushion.

Funding is particularly important, and tight, in facilities with live animals. Places like the Natural History Museum of Utah have the option of closing up completely for a while: the dinosaur bones won’t get any deader if no employees come in for weeks at a time. But zoos don’t have that option. The animals need to be fed and cared for whether visitors are coming in or not, and that makes funding disappear even faster.

The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, the Tracy Aviary, and the Hogle Zoo all closed for around 50 days from mid-March to midMay—the high season for most zoos—and all three are still reeling from the impact.

“The Hogle Zoo has taken a major hit, there’s no doubt. We were closed for 50 days during a time of year that is critical to the financial health of the zoo. Spring is when we fill our coffers to help keep us afloat during the fall and winter when attendance declines,” said Erica Hansen, the Hogle Zoo’s public relations manager.

A lot more was lost than just ticket revenue. Spring is also a key time for many zoos’ fundraising events, most of which had to be canceled or moved online.

“We had to cancel our conservation fundraising garden party, and our education fundraiser, which raises money for camp scholarships and free nature programs,” said Patricia Dark, the Tracy Aviary’s marketing director.

“Additionally, we had dozens of weddings booked that had to be canceled. All in all we lost about $500,000.”

Keeping zoos open is important, and not just because they’re fun to visit. Zoos are crucial for wildlife conservation, both locally and abroad, and they sponsor a lot of habitat protection and breeding programs for endangered animals. The Living Planet Aquarium farms coral and uses it to bolster struggling and dying coral reefs, which are vital to marine life.

The Tracy Aviary hosts and breeds several species that are extinct in the wild, such as the Guam kingfisher. Zoos are the only chance we have at introducing such species back into their native ecosystems.

“We engage over 100 community science

volunteers each year in local and state-wide projects that help conserve birds and their habitats. Our work helps many species—from rosy-finches, owls, and hummingbirds in Utah to macaws, pelicans, and plovers in Central America,” said Dark.

To keep doing the important work, zoos need every bit of money they can get, according to Loveland Living Planet Aquarium CEO Brent Andersen. “It costs over $2 million a year just to care for all of the animals—that includes food, veterinary care, staffing, habitat maintenance, etc. The closure happening right before spring break, our busiest two months of the year, has had a tremendous negative impact on funding,” Andersen said. “The reopening has relieved some of that pressure,” but not all of it.

To make things even harder, all three zoos are currently operating at limited capacity—in the aquarium’s case, this is by design, as they have been forced to limit ticket sales in order to enforce social distancing requirements in their mostly-indoor buildings.

“We’ve created a timed ticketing system.

This online reservation system allows guests to reserve a specific day and time for their visit. This system ensures that there is always enough room for guests to make physical distancing possible,” Andersen said. It’s a system that helps keep everyone safe, but it also means they’re seeing 40% less attendance than they have in prior years, which makes things hard. “Fewer guests means less revenue, while the cost of caring for the animals and running the facility remains.”

At the mostly outdoor Hogle Zoo and Tracy Aviary, tickets are being sold as normal, but visitors still seem to be hesitant to return in

the numbers they used to. According to Dark, the Tracy Aviary is only seeing 40% of its usual amount of visitors. The story at the Hogle Zoo is similar, even though staff are doing everything they can to make sure that visiting the zoo is as safe as possible.

“We were among the first three zoos in the country to reopen and our team worked tirelessly to make that happen,” Hansen said of Hogle Zoo. “We have hours for high-risk and elderly on Monday mornings, 8 to 10 a.m. Masks are required indoors and strongly encouraged outside, we have numerous hand sanitizer stations throughout zoo grounds, distance markers and lots of reminders for guests to take caution.

We’ve had a few vocal parties on the great mask debate of 2020, but otherwise, most guests seem to be enjoying their time and are happy to have a safe place to stretch their legs.”

With this decrease in visitor revenue, there’s a fair amount of worry as to what will happen should a winter resurgence of the virus trigger a second wave of closures.

Will the museums be able to survive it?

“Boy, we sure hope so,” Hansen said.

“That could be tough for us, and we’re currently counting on revenue and attendance during our popular BooLights and ZooLights events to help us out.” At BooLights and ZooLights, which occur around Halloween and Christmas respectively, the Hogle Zoo grounds are bedecked in hundreds of colorful holiday-themed lights. Both events are good family fun, and have been well attended in the past. Unfortunately, they also take place in fall and winter, which is when epidemiologists say a resurgence of the virus is likely.

Government aid is also a possibility. “Depending on the length of any closure, we would be seeking federal and local funding like those that were allocated through Congress in April,” Andersen said of the aquarium. This would also be an option for Utah’s other zoos.

Representatives from all the state’s museums and zoos said the public can help them to stay open. People can make a difference, through visiting them and simply donating.

“We need visitors now more than ever. Or we at least need your support. There are many ways to donate,” Hansen said.

Many museums, including the Hogle Zoo, are currently holding silent auctions, with prize packages donated by community businesses. Buying annual memberships to your favorite museums functions as a donation as well as a pass to visit them often. And, of course, there’s always the tried-and-true simple cash donation, which can be made through most any museum’s main website.

Donations really do make a difference for museums. It sure made a difference for the Natural History Museum of Utah, whose curators were, earlier this summer, worried whether it could survive the year.

But after their Fund the Future drive in June yielded nearly triple their original goal, their future is secured. With the public’s help, that same security can be given to other favorite museums. l

ne summer tradition is taking the family to a car show. This year the car show came to families.

Dozens of local car enthusiasts drove their vehicles through Midvale and Cottonwood Heights on Aug. 22. The Cottonwood Heights Police Department, Unified Police Department Midvale Precinct and the Unified Fire Authority all provided support while Unity Car Show Productions organized the cars.

The cars began rolling at Butler Middle School in Cottonwood Heights and wound their way west, ending near Topgolf, 920 Jordan River Blvd. in Midvale. Spectators positioned themselves safely away from other groups along the route.

The show included vintage cars, hot rods and a number of unique vehicles. l

More trails are coming to Salt Lake County

This year as the leaves changed I was reminded again how lucky we are to live in Utah where we get to experience four seasons in all their glory. Recently I had an opportunity to visit a beautiful area of our County--Butterfield Canyon--for a #BiketheButter Mountain Bike Rally.

With a gentle nudge from our mountain biking friends, we have an opportunity to take some of our Salt Lake County open space and make it more accessible. We have the chance to build a multiuse trail system in the southwest corner of the Salt Lake Valley and tie together Butterfield, Yellow Fork, and Rose Canyons. This exciting opportunity has been made possible with a partnership between Salt Lake County, the Bureau of Land Management, Rio Tinto, private property owners, and some dedicated

and passionate residents.

These residents have taken their passion for mountain biking and pulled the community together to raise money and speed up the timeline for a desired trail system.

This group recently raised $200,000 as a donation to begin this trail planning process.

Mountain biking is one of the fastest growing high school sports in Utah and the west side of the valley has over a thousand students participating. Developing this trail system makes these recreational opportunities available right in their backyard and will expand participation and access. The proposed trail system will link over 70 miles of trail and will provide recreational opportunities for hikers and equestrians, in addition to mountain bikers.

It will be another jewel in the open space crown of Salt Lake County.

Every few years Salt Lake County conducts a countywide needs assessment and the results from both the 2012 and 2017 surveys told us that the number one priority of residents was open space and trails. This year especially, as we all found ourselves spending a little more time closer to home we also saw a marked increase in people using our parks and trails.

We are so grateful for the foresight of visionary leaders who have been setting this

land aside, maintaining it, and making sure that everyone in the county has access.

Having a robust trail system throughout the Salt Lake Valley benefits everyone.

More open space will expand access and raise the quality of life for all of us. I am grateful for the passionate residents and thoughtful leaders who are willing to look forward not just for the next five years but for the next 50 years.

Ordinary pumpkins become extraordinary in the hands of ‘The Carving Chizel’

rowing up in Spanish Fork, Aaron Reimschiissel always celebrated Halloween with his family in a big way. His mother’s birthday happened to be on Oct. 31 and she celebrated every year with a special party. By carving jack-o’-lanterns for her annual celebrations, Reimschiissel discovered his special talent for transforming ordinary pumpkins into works of art.

This year, Reimschiissel plans to create his unique pumpkin carvings at Halloween events around the state including the Utah Water Conservancy Pumpkin Walk and the Pumpkin Walk in Daybreak. Last year, he carved pumpkins at Pumpkin Nights in Salt Lake City. He specializes in carving very large pumpkins that often can weigh several hundred pounds. These pumpkins have extremely thick and hard rinds which allow for sculpting depth and texture. He has carved everything from faces to monsters and animals to elaborate castles out of pumpkins.

“I try to do something a little bit different each time,” explained Reimschiissel, who uses the name “The Carving Chizel” professionally. He never knows what the pumpkin will look like in advance. “Within just a couple of minutes I have to decide what to make. I have to look at the shape and see what fits into it. That’s the biggest challenge. A face can fit any type of shape. You have to adjust with the pumpkin,” he said.

Murray spook alley carries on in nightmarish times

I

t might seem like there are enough anxiety-inducing things in the world lately, so a frightening Halloween venue might be the last thing people want. Yet owners of Murray’s Dead City Haunted House (5425 S. Vine Street) think now is a perfect time for patrons to get a supernatural scare.

“Entertainment via escapism is always needed in the darkest of times.

We can’t expect everyone to feel comfortable participating this year. We can, however, do everything possible to guarantee safety procedures are in place for those who do,” a Dead City spokes-monster (wishing to stay in character) said.

“This industry has its fans and artists that desperately need a distraction; we understand the responsibility not to disappoint, having invested in all the necessary resources to keep everyone happy and healthy.”

Dead City Haunted House is one of Utah’s newest indoor haunted attractions, now in its third season. They are featuring over 50 rooms of fear, with three all-new areas for 2020. Owner Tim Riggs has a history with the local spook alley industry, dating back to the Utah Fun Dome Haunted House, Rocky Point, and more.

With the COVID pandemic, attraction organizers have had to address customer safety by adding additional precautions and mothballing certain

practices.

“We can only do this together, so face masks are mandatory—to keep the screams safe. The show has been completely overhauled this year while maintaining as many scare spots as possible.

Hands-on options have been suspended, while all actors are kept at socially distanced positions inside the show,” the Dead City spokes-monster said. “Surfaces are cleaned regularly, several UV air filtration systems have been installed above the show to run constantly, and nightly fog sanitizes surfaces from entry to exit. All mazes and claustrophobic tunnels have been removed to maintain group distancing and avoid touching. Online ticket purchases are encouraged at a discounted rate.”

All staff and cast members have temperatures checked before being allowed backstage. Employees communicate and operate through personal mobile devices, and all backstage meetings are kept outside whenever possible. Cast members apply their own makeup, with very few needing it due to the heavy use of masks this season. Bridges have been built above the tighter areas to give actors the ability to operate some new surprises from a safe distance.

As part of keeping staff and patrons apart, Dead City will employ puppets or animatronic monsters to provide the screams.

“You will all have to come see if you can tell who (or what) is real or not inside the show and what they (or it) might do.

Very cutting edge to our knowledge, just one of the many custom creations by our engineering owner that helps make Dead City Haunted House unique to Utah,” the spokes-monster said.

Halloween isn’t Dead City’s only exclusive holiday; they have adapted their attraction to multiple holidays this past year. They hosted a “Krampus Night” in December, based on the central European tradition of a half-goat, half-demon that visits naughty children on Christmas, a complete opposite of Santa Claus. The Krampus event allows Dead City to give the Christmas season a monstrous makeover with a visit by Krampus and his minions. Dead City also hosts “Love Bites,” a vampire-themed Valentine’s Day experience that they hope to do again this coming year.

Krampus Night caught national recognition, and Dead City was recognized

by HAuNTcon and Haunted Attraction Network as “2020 Haunters to Watch.”

The award stated, “Dead City Haunted House impressed us with their video creation, narrative tie into their overall theme, social media contest, and overall use of a limited budget.”

Dead City is open 7:30 p.m. every day in October (except Sundays) and a few weekends in November. l

That pumpkin was featured in a local newspaper article and he was asked to carve pumpkins at another Halloween party. It was there that he met members of the Utah Giant Pumpkin Growers Association. He has been carving for them ever since.

Reimschiissel credits his mom, who enjoys crafting and drawing caricatures, with encouraging his interest in art. He has studied drawing as well as sculpture. Reimschiissel continues to study form and shape to build his repertoire of pumpkin designs.

“Right now I’m learning about skeletons,” he said. “I just bought one to learn more anatomy. I have a lot of ideas in my head!”

Reimschiissel’s wife, Chelsea, had never seen 3D pumpkin carvings before she saw his work. “It’s so cool how creative he can get,” she said. “He never goes in with a plan. Most of the time he just wings it which is amazing to me.

He gets asked all the time how he plans [his designs] but most of the time he just shows up and carves.”

The spontaneous nature of Reimschiissel’s art and the fact that he is often carving in front of an audience is the most challenging aspect. “When people are watching there’s a level of thinking ‘you have to make it look good!”” he said.

He recalled a particularly difficult carving project in which he sculpted a winged devil out of a pumpkin and ended up inserting a separate piece of rind to make the head.

Reimschiissel’s two young daughters, Kaiyah and Kinlee, are his biggest fans. Kaiyah, who is 9 years old, is showing an interest in carving pumpkins as well. “They have so much pride in their dad’s pumpkins. The best thing is bringing them to events. They get so excited and will just stand there forever watching him. They like to tell people that’s their dad,” Chelsea said.

“It’s fun to see the kids’ reactions,” said Reimschiissel, describing the aspect he likes best about carving in front of an audience. In 2019, he carved a “punk beast” pumpkin at Thanksgiving Point. The Utah Giant Pumpkin Growers Association later took that pumpkin and displayed it in front of Primary Children’s Hospital. Being able to share his work with the hospitalized children was one of the highlights of his carving career.

He is looking forward to the upcoming Halloween season and carving more unique pumpkin creations. Halloween film haunts in our backyard

By Katy Whittingham | k.whittingham@mycityjournals.com tah, and Salt Lake City in particular, has seen a growth in film productions in recent years, and television series and films that fall in the horror genre are no exception.

According to a report that came out late last year by the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) which includes the Utah Film Commission, film production dollars spent in Utah more than doubled between 2015 and 2019 to about $87 million. The state film commission attributes the growth to a variety of scenery, economic incentives, and available talent. In a press release from this September available on the film commission’s website, it was announced that the GOED board has approved “five new productions for state film incentives, generating an estimated economic impact of $6.5 million and creating over 185 local jobs.”

Utah horror film enthusiasts will find no shortage of locations to visit this Halloween season. A recent production that was filmed around Salt Lake City and has a story set in the state is the critically acclaimed 2018 horror tragedy film, “Hereditary,” starring Gabriel Byrne and Toni Collette and written and directed by Ari Aster. The story follows a family in turmoil as they are haunted by a menacing presence following the death of a secretive maternal grandmother. School scenes were shot at West High School in the Salt Lake City School District and at Utah State Fair Park. The exteriors of the family’s house and tree house were shot in Summit County, and perhaps the most picturesque and hauntingly beautiful scenes at the cemetery were filmed at Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy.

“Hereditary” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2018 and was a critical and commercial success grossing over $80 million.

Two of the films in the legendary “Halloween” horror franchise were also filmed in Utah, primarily around Salt Lake City and Midvale: “Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers” released in 1988 and “Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers” released the following year. Although receiving negative reviews from critics, much like the other films in the franchise, they have maintained a strong cult following. More than 40 years after the first film’s release, you will still find Michael Myers masks, costumes, and decorations in Halloween stores like Spirit Halloween.

Although principal photography for “Halloween 4” was completed in California, filmmakers moved production to Salt Lake City in the spring of 1988 because of rising costs and had to import fall leaves and other fall scenery to make it look like October.

comatose state and escapes transport to a sanitarium in a plight to kill his only living relative, his niece, Jamie Lloyd, daughter of Laurie Strode, a prominent character in the first two and later films in the franchise. The McGillis School in Salt Lake City stands in for Jamie’s school, and her home with her foster family is located in the lower Avenues and was actually up for sale in late 2019. Much of the outside shots and roads for the town of Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy served as the location for cemetery scenes in the 2018 horror film, “HerediHaddonfield, Illinois, where the story is set, is tary.” (Katy Whittingham/City Journals) Midvale on 1-15.

A popular soda and shake shop in the ’40s and ’50s, Vincent Drug has served as a filming location for many other film and television shows of the ’80s and ’90s, including Stephen King’s 1994 horror miniseries, • Swing Sets “The Stand.”

In some confusion, and more crew members mistook actual prisoners’ belongings as props and moved them between cells not realizing the mistake until after the first day of shooting.

Other upcoming horror films that were or are currently being filmed in Utah include the werewolf, horror-comedy, “The Wolf of Snow Hollow,” set for limited release in theaters on Oct. 9, and the feature, “Deadstream,” written and directed by local filmmakers, Vanessa and Joseph Winter, and described as a “love letter to ’80’s horror cinema.” It’s expected to be released in January 2021.

Ghosting ghosts

Decorations remind us of the existence of ghosts, vampires, goblins, werewolves, and other non-human creatures. We may even become a bit more startled by that unexplained noise in the middle of the night. We might wonder if others from beyond share our space.

There are many stories, myths, and folklores concerning ghosts throughout historical contexts. The common foundational plot for all these tales is a spirit has moved on from its original form and is now somewhere between our world and the afterlife. Some lore focuses on the ghosts of animals and objects, but let’s focus on the human ghosts for now.

Ghosts may be noticed through electromagnetic interference, a drop in temperature, items moving seemingly on their own, unrecognizable whispers or other audio abnormalities, and/or environmental features like fire, water, electricity, and wind behaving rather strangely.

“Ghost Adventures,” a 19-season television show, sends out a crew to investigate hauntings.

The crew members commonly have a variety of tools to help them locate ghosts through the avenues mentioned above. They even created their own device called the Extra Investigator Box which detects magnetic, infrared, and other physical events.

If you’re not a star on this Travel Channel show, there are a few household devices that can help detect a ghost. Thermometers, infrared cameras, and motion detectors can be used to detect temperature changes and minimal motion changes. A tape recorder can be used to convert communication outside of our perceptual field into sensations humans can understand.

Ghosts are often believed to be attached to a place, item or person. There are varying stories about why and or how ghosts stick around, but regardless, they often do. Some cultures around the world welcome these ghosts, as they are believed to be visiting family members or other loved ones.

In America, we often do not welcome ghosts and try to rid them from our spaces. If you do suspect a ghost to be in your space and wish to remove them, perhaps helping it to move on,

what can you do? There are a few different recommendations from varying sources for getting rid of a ghost. Before I dive into a few, let me provide a word of caution. When dealing with the supernatural, always do your research, be respectful and cautious, and stay aware.

If you’re convinced a ghost is in your space, you might figure out why it’s there in the first place. Some believe a ghost can become attached to an item, location, or person, continually haunting them. Another belief is that a ghost has unfinished business. If possible, determine why a ghost is still lingering and then the more effective course of action would be to help the ghost resolve their business.

However, if it’s impossible to figure out why a ghost is hanging around, there are some possible actions. A popular television series worldwide with 15 seasons in just as many years, “Supernatural,” shows audiences how “hunters” track monstrous creatures and rids them from this earthly plane. “Supernatural” shows perpetuate the idea that ghosts can be temporary eliminated with salt and iron. It is commonly believed that supernatural beings are aversive to salt. If known, hunters will try to salt or burn the bones or item the ghost is attached to.

In addition, ghost-repelling spells are used in “Supernatural” when other avenues of riding a ghost fail to work, along with holy water. A common lore throughout contexts is that ghosts cannot enter or be on holy ground.

Suggestions from entertainment and television should be taken with a grain of salt though (no pun intended). Outside of entertainment, momentary interaction may be recommended.

If you suspect a ghost is frequently hanging around, it may not be malicious. In which case, it is possible to speak directly to them. When talking to a ghost, experts believe it is important to set boundaries, be assertive, respectfully ask them to stop bothering you and confidently let them know that they are not welcome in the space. After interacting, do not do it again.

If a ghost still lingers, it may be best to seek out professional help for a ritual or ceremony. Or, alternatively, remove yourself from the space by moving out.

It’s been a decade since COVID-19 reached our shores, ushering in 45 years of hand sanitizer, remote learning and face mask protesters sporting apostrophe-addled signs like “Your an idiot” and “Parent’s against masks”.

But now it’s October. Halloween is at risk.

S*** just got real.

Nothing could be scarier than 2020, with its earthquakes and hurricane-force winds and rising COVID infection rates and elections, but Halloween isn’t just about fear. Halloween is the one day a year conservative moms can buy push-up bras and dress like lusty dog catchers, guilt free. It’s the day Snickers for breakfast and Reese’s for lunch are appropriate meals. It’s the day politically-inappropriate celebrities get tagged on social media.

But COVID changed everything. Los Angeles prohibited trick-or-treating along with haunted house venues, Halloween carnivals and other spooky activities. After a swift and furious backlash from parents who need to give their kids ONE thing to look forward to this year, the city backed down and “recommended” common sense. Like that’s a thing.

Even then, it’s gonna take a lot to scare our children anymore in 2020. They spent months locked in the house, learning fractions online and wearing face masks to the grocery store. Their stress levels are sky-high and adrenal fatigue has caused weepy breakdowns and heartbreaking acceptance.

On the bright side, COVID-19 ushered in a whole new series of costumes for the holiday, including coronavirus outfits, teachers in hazmat suits and the very funny Elsa in a plastic bubble.

I think I’ll dress up as a mail-in ballot since that seems to be the most terrifying thing in the country today. (Sidenote: Vote on Nov. 3. Vote by mail, vote in person, drop your vote off in a ballot box. I don’t

care how you vote. Crawl through a lake of spiders, a graveyard of zombies - just vote!)

The CDC issued COVID-19 risk categories, pertaining to Halloween activities. The lowest risk is a virtual festival where celebrations are held on Zoom because we just can’t get enough of Zoom, can we? (Sidenote: Has anyone investigated the connection between the coronavirus and Zoom?

Hmm??)

Moderate risk includes small gatherings where individuals stay apart from each other and wear those Halloween masks from the ‘70s because there is no way germs (or breath) will get through that thick plastic.

Higher risk activities will be your social distanced haunted houses where vampires and witches stand six feet away and snarl the horrible things they’d do if they could just get a little closer. That horrifying thing breathing down your back is the lo-

Posing the highest risk are large, in-person, nomask gatherings made popular in places like Utah and Washington Counties. (Sidenote: Idiots.)

People have tried to ruin Halloween for centuries. The latest attempt was the introduction of Trunk-or-Treat, which should be banned in all 50 states for its mediocre contribution to the holiday, so I don’t think COVID will stop Halloween enthusiasts. Some people find Halloween offensive, with its glittery bats and baby werewolves. But everything is offensive this year. If something didn’t offend someone in 2020, did it really happen?

I guess we’ll see if people party safely this Halloween when COVID results start rolling in two weeks later. I’ll stand outside your hospital room with signs like, “I wish youd listened” and “Your an imbecile”.l
