ighteen months is a long time to stay in character.

Midvale Main Street Theatre was six days away from staging the Stephen Sondheim musical comedy “Company” when they temporarily shut down in March 2020. Like most theatre companies in the valley, they hoped they’d be back up and running in a few weeks.

“It was very weird. It felt very uncertain,” said Cameron Garner, the lead actor in “Company.” “For a few weeks we kept that tension going, hoping people would be kind enough to wear masks and have it be over.”

For Tammy Ross, who owns and operates MMST, keeping the actors safe was her biggest priority. The weeks of being closed turned into months, then a year.

“We—meaning me, my students, professional (actors)— realized we’ve got to focus on other things and when we come back to it we’ll have to reinvest,” Garner said.

Ross and her daughter, Cassidy Ross, spent much of 2020 cleaning and updating the theatre. It was their first chance to complete improvement projects after years of back-to-back performances.

“We added a new concessions counter, upgraded air purification systems, added touchless faucets and paper towels and updated the green rooms,” Tammy Ross said. “Just trying to improve things as much as we can in this little old building with no money coming in. We sanded and repainted doors and trim, cleaned out costumes, touched up the art and painted the stalls.”

Students get a look into manufacturing principles, careers at Rock West Composites

W

hat may look like a single layer of fabric may actually be several layers of alternating carbon fiber coated with resin to create a stable, yet pliable composite that is being used in manufacturing for tubing as well as many customized projects.

That may have been what approximately 25 students from high schools in Canyons School District learned as it toured Rock West Composites in West Jordan on National Manufacturing Day. “They manufacture components made of carbon fiber, which is lighter than aluminum and stronger than steel,” said Christy Bond, Jordan High work-based learning coordinator who escorted the group that toured the facility.

“They walked us through the cutting process, the molding process, and showed us the raw materials. Students got hands on to see what carbon fiber is like before the resin is added and then after the resin is added, how it becomes pliable and can turn into something super sturdy.”

Bond said students also learned about thermal stressing where the material runs through “minus 30 to 280 degrees back and forth to stabilize that material, which they sometimes use for calibration of devices.”

While the students learned the company does a lot of stock tubing, they also saw some of the customized items they made.

“One of the cool things they make is a lightweight, portable X-ray machine, that…is able to use on football fields as well as Third World countries. Another cool thing they showed us was called the HANS (head and neck support) device; it’s a head and neck restraint device that’s used in Speedway racing,” Bond said, adding that they also discussed composite being used to manufacture bicycles, drones and other aerospace applications. “One of the kids thought that was really cool that you could use it to create pieces for auto design.”

Students also had the chance to ask what other uses the company manufactures for (materials that are used in marine, energy and scientific purposes amongst others), about their careers as well as how they can prepare for the field.

“The thing they said they like to emphasize is employability skills: how you have to be a hard worker, a good person and willing to learn,” she said, adding that

they trained people on-site. “They rotate people through the manufacturing, the purchasing, the office work so that they get a feel for the company.”

While most of Jordan High’s students are taking the manufacturing principles course in the medical innovations pathway, the tour was open to any student who was interested in manufacturing.

“All the manufacturing principles can be applied into when they eventually make their own medical devices” in the second term of the medical innovations pathway, she said.

The year-long medical innovations pathway, which is housed at Jordan High, is open to any junior or senior.

In the one-credit pathway, students who are interested in engineering or biomanufacturing learn the manufacturing process, learn the history of the industry, product development, operational structures and optimization,

cost and quality control. The second semester includes a course in biomanufacturing to explore the medical device industry, U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s regulations as they apply to the medical device industry, and careers in the field.

Students also have the opportunity to have job shadows and internships in biomanufacturing companies.

Then, students are guaranteed an interview and if selected to work at the company, they are eligible for tuition assistance for ongoing training, Bond said.

At the successful completion of the program, students receive an industry certificate and are hosted at the state Capitol building by the governor or governor’s representative for an award ceremony. Since the medical innovations pathway began six years ago, about 90 students have completed the program. l

Canyons District honors those who provide excellence, commitment, leadership

A

lta View Principal Scott Jameson called volunteer Dr. Allyn Kau, asking her to come to his office to talk rather than over the phone.

Immediately, the mother wondered if something happened with her children, but she knew that they weren’t ones who get in trouble.

Kau had volunteered at the school for five years and even had substituted so she couldn’t imagine why he needed to talk to her in-person. Nevertheless, she emailed him back and went into his office the next day.

“He told me that he just got a notice from the (Canyons) Board (of Education) that I was chosen as the volunteer of the year,” she remembered. “I didn’t even know I was nominated.”

Kau recently was honored as the Canyons School District’s 2021 Volunteer of Year Apex Award-winner. She was honored for her excellence, commitment and leadership along with other Apex recipients, including teacher of the year Traci Raymond, who recently retired from Alta High; school administrator of the year Tom Sherwood of Brighton High; district administrator of the year Steve Dimond; student support services professional of the year Amy Boettger; education support professionals of the year Rick Hoggard, Lorraine Miles and Jeff Wren; elected official of the year Rep. Andrew Stoddard; community partner of the year Scheels; and legacy award-winners former Canyons administrators Kathryn McCarrie and Karen Sterling.

“Dr. Kau has been our PTA treasurer for several years; she’s been a substitute teacher whenever we’ve needed one. She’s here for career day, for our fun run, for every event.

She’s been a driving force for our equity discussion for all kids; she has a Ph.D. and instead of working full time, she’s here volunteering,” Jameson said. “She’s been the individual who developed our summer reading program two years ago that is a collaborative effort between teachers and the Salt Lake County Library. If I ever need something, she’s immediately here, offering help.

Dr. Kau is the heart of our school.”

Kau deflects Jameson’s praise.

“He’s always thanking people and doesn’t take the credit he deserves; everyone here is helping and deserves this recognition,” she said. “What I do is for all of them—the SCC (school community council), PTA, parents, teachers. I’m just shocked I’m being recognized when all I’m doing is trying to help everyone, many who are overwhelmed while working hard through the pandemic.”

The reading program Kau developed stemmed from helping a former third-grade student with math.

“The student couldn’t read the problem, but once it was read to the student, he could

Reading affects all subjects and most schools only have reading K-3 interventionists. I knew I needed to find a way to help him otherwise he’d always struggle, and I also knew if there was one student struggling, there likely were more,” she said.

With teachers already consumed by their workload, Kau took it upon herself to start outlining ideas. She attended a PTA conference where the Utah State Board of Education presented research about DYAD reading, which she was able to bring into her program outline. She also found out information from United Way and the Promise Partnership Third-Grade Elementary Reading Network. She also reached out to the Salt Lake County Library System.

At the same time, Jameson had heard from a number of teachers about the need for a strong summer reading program after attending a training. He put Kau together with those teachers to see how her program could support their needs. Then, Kau coordinated with the Alta View librarian to see about opening the school library during the summer and gained the support of the PTA. “I know education has helped me and given me my life. If I can help these students and give them the confidence to succeed in the classroom, they can gain confidence and have what I have,” said Kau, who has her Ph.D. in physical therapy and who credits her mother for teaching her and her seven siblings how to read and supporting her education while growing up. “Everyone was willing to help and asked how they could support us.”

While Kau continues to work one weekend per month, she knows volunteering can make a difference in people’s lives.

“We all have different experiences, all the people we meet. By volunteering, it can help combat all the challenges we may be facing, the inequities there are, to give the best possible academic learning possible to everyone,” she said, adding that it was her mother who told her to be known around Alta View as Dr. Kau, so it will motivate students to inspire to achieve similar career goals.

The reading program, also known as Roadrunners Read, completed its second summer in 2021 (after one year off during the COVID-19 summer of 2020). It has a partnership with a Salt Lake County librarian who presents a storytime around a theme and brings a literacy project for students to be engaged in come to the school library, which is open during the summer for students to check out books, sometimes two levels higher than grade level. DYAD reading is modeled to families and teachers contribute and are supportive of the reading program, she said.

“Mr. Jameson is willing to offer a way to help students by opening the school in the summer and the librarian welcomes students to the school library, teachers are supporting it, and we have support from the community; it’s all been huge to helping these students.

It benefits the whole school; it benefits the neighborhood,” Kau said. “My name is on the award, and Mr. Jameson took the time

to do something kind even though he knows that I’m uncomfortable being in the limelight. It’s really an Alta View award. I’ve just crossed paths to help. To me, it has just been so inspiring to see how many people are wanting to help.”l

Hillcrest High graduates recognized for making difference in others’ lives

H

illcrest High School 1994 graduate Stan Clawson was seen about everywhere during his high school days—on stage in school plays and musicals, drawing cartoons for the school newspaper and producing short films for the school television program. He also was the student body president.

However, after high school, Clawson was paralyzed in a rock-climbing accident and that set his passion for promoting disability awareness and inclusion through film. He helped form a small video production company and directed and edited the film, “Continue” for the Paralyzed Veterans of America, which is now incorporated into hospital rehab programs throughout the United States.

He also served during the 2002 Winter Olympics and Paralympics as a disability support specialist and later, a public relations position with the National Ability Center.

“Stan was a mover and shaker early on and now he has amazing experiences in movie-making and as an advocate,” Hillcrest High Alumni Association President Craig Conder said. “I was really impressed when meeting him and his attitude to help out where he can.”

Jake Colvin, Hillcrest class of 2003, was the Distinguished Young Alumni Award recipient.

Colvin grew up in Sandy and attended Hillcrest where he was involved in choir, acting and the sciences, and developed a strong passion for helping people of diverse cultures.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in European studies with an emphasis in international man-

agement and a minor in chemistry, setting the stage for his innovative career.

While at Oregon State University’s pharmacy school, he created healthcare solutions and new potential treatments through early drug development. He also performed cancer research at Brigham Young University, where he also was a 2012 Crocker Innovation Fellow.

It was during that time, he cofounded the

company, Owlet Baby Care, as a way to serve and solve real-world problems. The owlet is designed for infants born with congenital heart defects or other life-threatening illnesses; it is clothing with wearable technology to alert parents if a serious situation arises. Owlets have been provided to low- and middle-income families around the world.

Now, he is aiming to help others in the world by providing low-cost technology to empower frontline and rural health workers with diagnostic tools where currently, none are available.

“Jake’s owlet is really cool,” Conder said.

“Through his efforts with that and providing diagnostic equipment into the Third World countries, he’s making our world a better place.”

Conder said both award recipients were nominated based on their work in the community and impact they’ve made on others.

Each year, Hillcrest’s alumni association accepts nominations for the awards and a committee reviews them. The nominations are considered for five years, Conder said.

This was the third annual distinguished alumni awards ceremony.

In August 2020, MMST hoped to stage a virtual version of “Disenchanted!” They assembled most of the original cast that had performed with the theatre before, but the technical challenges of singing over Zoom were too difficult to overcome and the project was postponed.

Virtual cabarets in July and December 2020 were more successful, with individual artists streaming their performances one at a time.

In May, MMST tried another virtual performance of “Disenchanted! The Stay at Home Version.” This time they built a set in the theatre and brought the actors in one by one to record their parts.

“It was way more work than just putting on a show,” Cassidy Ross said. “It was hard for us as cast members because there were dances and we had to make sure we were all doing it at the same time. And it’s like I had to sing everyone else’s part in my head and just be an alto in the background for the entire song.”

“Disenchanted” was available to stream during one weekend in May for $10.

“It was so hard. It was fun, but hard,” Tammy Ross agreed. “It’s a project I never want to take on again, but it was a learning experience. The actors were so hungry for something to do. They got to perform somehow, even if not together.”

“I appreciate that Midvale took their cues from Broadway,” Garner said. “Midvale was willing to take our safety more seriously than our hopes and dreams.”

MMST had been closer to staging “Company” when COVID-19 hit, but another musical, “Next to Normal,” had also been cast in 2020 and seemed like a better fit for the reopening in June. The rock musical from 2008 explores the effect of mental illness on a typical suburban family.

“I feel like ‘Next to Normal’ is the poster child for 2020,” Tammy Ross said. “It had a smaller cast and no dancing, just blocking and singing. It was an easier thing for us to come back with while trying to navigate what was going to happen. We were pleasantly surprised at the number of patrons that came back for ‘Next to Normal.’ We had probably 85%-plus of seats sold every night.”

In July, the children’s program returned with “101 Dalmatians Kids.”

Cassidy Ross runs the youth and teen programs at MMST. She knew the young actors were eager to get back on stage, but their health and safety was her first priority.

“We have three cancer survivors in our youth program,” Cassidy Ross said. “This is a very big deal, very compromised immune systems. I’ve tried to keep them as safe as I can.”

MMST partners with Millie’s Princess Foundation to give young cancer survivors a chance to perform. The nonprofit is based in Sandy and gives financial and other support Action! to families of children fighting cancer.

Not a single member of the large cast tested positive for COVID-19 during rehearsals or performances of “101 Dalmatians.”

The theatre was not so lucky in August when they staged the teen show.

“We had planned the closing weekend of ‘Descendants’ to be the weekend before school started, but then school started two weeks earlier this year,” Cassidy Ross said.

“We opened the week school started, and that’s why we had COVID outbreaks.”

The theatre implemented temperature checks and required masks and negative COVID-19 tests during rehearsals, even though most cast members had been vaccinated. Then an actor tested positive on opening day.

The rest of the cast tested negative, so MMST scheduled a make-up performance and re-sanitized the theatre. The rest of the first weekend of performances went well, but the next weekend two other cast members tested positive. Then Cassidy Ross herself became sick from the virus.

“I didn’t think to wear a mask by myself backstage while I was cleaning things out,” Cassidy Ross said. “It knocked me out. My doctor said it could have been really bad if I hadn’t been vaccinated.”

The show must go on

The theatre had to postpone the final six, sold-out performances of “Descendants the Musical.”

“Some people were extremely understanding. Some were not,” Tammy Ross said.

“Then we had ‘Company’ right on the heels of that.”

The set for “Descendants” was hidden at the back of the stage, to be used again in January.

Then in October, “Company” was finally performed, 18 months after being fully rehearsed and ready to go.

“Midvale was very helpful, when we did come back and confirm the new performance dates,” Garner said. “They said we would do the music from the beginning and start over with the choreography. We started over as if we had never done it before.”

Garner is the theatre teacher at Taylorsville High School. Starring in “Company” was his first time acting with MMST, but several of his students have been involved in the youth program.

“Part of the interpretation to the show

that we brought was how isolation affected those relationships, and how social media affected them,” Garner said. “Not a complete reinvention of the story, but we added those touches.”

Garner turned down other opportunities to stay involved with the production.

“I knew playing Bobby was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Garner said. “Theatre is one of the best ways to learn about another perspective, to learn about somebody who’s different than you. There’s so much great theatre out there that enlightens, not just entertains.”

All the world’s a stage

Tammy Ross and her husband, Steven, bought the theatre at 771 S. Main St. in 2008.

Owning the building has been a significant factor in being able to keep MMST open.

“Part of why we bought this building was because this street is so unique and has so much potential,” Tammy Ross said. “I’m excited for some of the plans the RDA has to improve exteriors of buildings and the walkability of the street.”

Tammy Ross volunteered to serve as chair of the newly-formed Main Street Business Alliance in August and advocated shutting down the street occasionally to hold festivals. She feels encouraged by the attendance at recent celebrations for Halloween and Christmas and is hopeful that new restaurants will bring more foot traffic past the theatre.

“It’s very nice to see people coming back and realizing that there is still a group of patrons out there that are wanting to come see live theatre,” Tammy Ross said. “I think people have missed it, or maybe didn’t appreciated it as much and now they do.”

MMST’s next musical production, “First Date,” will run from Feb. 10-27. Tickets can be purchased online at www.midvaletheatre. com. “We stayed closed maybe a little longer than we absolutely had to,” Tammy Ross said.

“But for safety’s sake I just felt like it was the right decision to make. And we’re not out of the woods with this craziness yet. We hope to be back running full steam…eventually.” l

Hillcrest High: 50 years strong with Title IX

Title IX, the landmark gender equity law that passed 50 years ago this June as part of the Education Amendments of 1972, gave females opportunity for equal education: to finish high school, to be awarded scholarships, to study at college, to enter careers beyond those of a secretary, nurse and teacher. It banned discrimination for federally funded programs.

What is commonly regarded with Title IX, is sports, yet nowhere in the 37-word Code of Federal Regulations does it mention athletics: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”

The National Federation of State High School Association reported in 2019, girls’ high school athletic participation reached an all-time high with 3.43 million opportunities for girls to compete. According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, one in every five girls in the U.S. played sports in 2016; before Title IX passed, it was one in 27.

Girls, unlike their grandmothers, who often were limited to drill, volleyball and basketball if they even had those opportunities, are now participating in everything from mountain biking to wrestling, the latter which completed its first season last year under Utah High School Activities Association.

Kathy Howa, who was a four-sport athlete at Hillcrest High in 1976-78, said the impact Title IX had on her was great.

“It was an experience that I was privileged to have,” she said. “I wouldn’t be who I am today without school and having had the opportunity to play sports.”

Hillcrest High’s athletic program for girls was somewhat in place when Title IX passed, but not as it is today with more than a dozen club and sanctioned sports.

When the school opened in 1962, girls joined the Marchioness or “perfect marcher.”

The team of 50 girls, advised by Dorothy Schmidt, were considered a pep club that “not only promoted school spirit, but established enthusiasm, respect and admiration for our new school,” according to Hillcrest’s yearbook. It wasn’t until the mid-1970s where they transitioned to more of a drill team.

In traditional sports, the school’s first female coach was appointed in 1973.

Jane Miner, who was her early 20s and straight out of student teaching at Hillcrest, was hired to teach English. Three days later, she was called to Principal DelMar Schick’s office.

“He said, ‘We’re starting a girls’ athletic program and you’re in charge. I want it to be the best one in the state,’” she recalled. “That was just after Title IX had passed and the high school activities association had decided

to start endorsing girls’ sports; up until then, it was illegal for girls to compete in sports in high schools.”

Before the passage of Title IX, Hillcrest’s program was like her experience as a high school student in Springville.

“We had a physical education teacher who said we don’t care what the law is, we’re going to have a team, so we played basketball, tennis and volleyball against some of the other schools,” said the 5-foot-3-inch former athlete. “The physical education teachers would set it up and coach, but we had to transport ourselves; we had to buy our own uniforms.”

The style of basketball, for example, started with six on six (three on offense and three on defense) and players couldn’t cross half court and they could only dribble three times “because we were thought to be so frail,” she mocked.

Eventually, rules changed to two defenders, two on offense and two rovers who could dribble and cross the center line.

When UHSAA sanctioned girls’ basketball in 1975-76 it was five-on-five and Miner had a learning curve ahead of her.

“Here I am, in charge of this athletic program and I did not have any coaching experience, nor had I been allowed to learn how to be a coach. So, most of what I learned about coaching, I learned from the boys’ coaches.

I would pick their brains and I would do my own research,” she said. “I’m a competitive person and I thought if I’m going to do this, we’re gonna win it.”

And Hillcrest did. In the early years following Title IX, the Huskies won state titles: in 1973 and 1975 in volleyball; in 1974 and 1975 in track and field; in 1976 in basketball; and several region softball titles (softball wasn’t yet sanctioned by the UHSAA).

“We were the team to beat for two or three or four years,” said Vicky Lundgren Dexter, who was a multi-sport athlete in 1974-76. “Back in those days, you could play volleyball and basketball and run track.”

Her teammate, Kaya Burns Le Prey played four sports. Le Prey, who was the point guard, was known for stealing the basketball and she remembered the women’s size ball hadn’t come into play yet.

“It wasn’t easy, because we were girls, to win the state championship,” Le Prey said.

“You still have to win games; you still have to practice; and you still have to work hard.”

Those championships were followed by Hillcrest’s three state titles in gymnastics in the 1980s and the drill team’s seven state titles between 1999 through 2016.

However, early on, even with winning, Miner recalled there was not much reported in the news.

“Nobody paid any attention to the girls; the papers, they never covered any of that.

They didn’t think it was important,” she said.

“We did something that nobody else had done, and nobody can take that away. We were the first state champions in volleyball, basketball and track and field and no one can ever match that.”

Those championships came even as

girls’ sports weren’t treated equally.

They played in the “girls’” or auxiliary gym instead of the “boys’” or main gym.

They didn’t have team locker rooms.

“There was no consideration—girls in the boys’ gym? Oh no, that ‘ain’t gonna happen.’ There was no reason for it,” Miner said.

“We had to use the ‘girls’’ gym so I had to set up all the chairs, I had to clean the floor, the whole nine yards.”

That continued into second coach Jeanie Crickmore Wilson’s era, but in her last two years of coaching, the team was offered to play in the main gym.

“I told them at that point, ‘No, I don’t want to play in the main gym.’ You don’t have a home court advantage if you don’t play in the gym you’re practicing. If we had been able to practice in that gym, it would have been a different story,” she said.

Hillcrest’s principal at the time was DelMar Schick and he wanted to win.

“DelMar Schick was supportive, but it wasn’t necessarily that he loved girls’ sports, it’s just that he was really competitive. He thought if I’m going to do this, we’re going to beat everybody at it,” Miner said.

Transportation was provided, but their uniform choices were few. They first played in polyester top “starchies” which they joked could stand up on their own, then in the “pickle” or “watermelon” shorts sporting wide stripes of different colors of green. They played several different sports in the same uniform unlike the boys.

“We didn’t have as much funding as

boys, but we did have funding. I never had to do a fundraiser for uniforms or buses or anything,” said Barbara Nielsen Barnett, who played three sports in the 1970s.

The path to gaining equality in sports wasn’t easy, Miner recalled.

“I remember one day, DelMar Schick and I, we were talking about Title IX budgets. I was trying to get more money for the girls, and he said to me, ‘You know, if we have to give the same amount of money to the girls that we give to the boys, there will be no sports.’ He got really scared when it came to giving more money to the girls. In his mind, it meant we have to take it away from the boys,” she said. “It was a lot of work and a lot of time, and you got a lot of push back from everything.”

Miner coached all the girls in traditional sports at the time except for gymnastics and swimming.

“I had no assistant coaches until the last year I was there. So, as they added sports, I had to coach all of them. Most of the time, I was coaching three sports at a time. I would have one team in the gym, I might have the tennis team out on the courts, and the softball team out on the field, all at the same time.

I would rotate between all of them. I would be there until 7 o’clock at night. I was exhausted; I was coaching all these sports and I didn’t get paid for it. I was just doing it because I wanted these girls to have these opportunities that I never had,” she said, adding after teaching and coaching five years, she left Hillcrest to coach at Weber State University, and was later issued a check for $500 for coaching those years.

When Wilson was coaching, she remembered driving in the fact that girls’ athletics was here to stay by playing a prank on the principal.

“Marie Green (assistant coach) was hilarious; she got one of her friends from Brigham City to come down and pretend she was a Title IX activist with a briefcase, glasses and got in his office. (She talked about) girls not playing in the main gym, not having locker rooms and gave him a bunch of crap all day long. She scared the pants off him. At the end of the day, we went in and just started laughing and gave him a huge sucker,” Wilson said.

However, it provided her a platform to get everything she wanted.

“That’s all I cared about. I swear DelMar Schick would have built me a new gym if I asked. We had so many things that other schools didn’t have because of him,” Wilson said.

As a player, Howa realized girls sports were still evolving.

“When I was in high school, it wasn’t equal obviously. We didn’t get to play (for a state title) in every sport,” Howa said and added she played softball one year and won region, but state wasn’t offered. “Softball was discontinued after my sophomore year; we didn’t even get to play it my junior and senior year. I don’t know why, but it was dev-

astating, we loved it.”

While some sports took longer to get established, Barnett believes it was because “it was a brand new thing: funding was always an issue, setting up scheduling, getting buildings, we just had to deal with the boys and now they had to get the girls in and get places.”

Miner said, “A lot of it was these definitions of what girls and women could do and what they should do, and softball was not a sport that they thought girls and women should be involved in. As I look back on it, it really was kind of dumb all the things they were stuck on and what they believed, and we were stuck with what they told us we could do. I fought it as much as I could, but I’m only one person.”

Even while coaching, Miner said she was reminded “you had to be a lady.”

That was the societal norm when these student-athletes were growing up as they didn’t have many female athletic role models or were unaware of them because of the lack of media coverage.

Dexter remembered her sports role models were UCLA coach John Wooden and Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo.

“Title IX was a big deal. Back then, it was right at our time. It was the start of college teams and the start of both women’s push in sports,” Dexter said, adding she was offered a scholarship at College of Eastern Utah, but turned it down and went to play for Brigham Young University.

Wilson said the movement gained momentum when Billie Jean King made headlines beating Bobby Riggs in the Battle of the Sexes, and Wilson even got her autograph.

Miner said even now more improvement is needed.

“I look at girls’ sports today in the high school, and this is 50 years since Title IX, and they’re still not receiving the same opportunities as boys in coaching, in facilities and resources,” she said. “They’ve gotten much, much better, but it hasn’t been easy, and they’ve had to fight for everything because no matter what happens if push comes to shove, let’s say there’s a scheduling conflict of the use of the gym, the boys will always win.”

However Howa said it’s important to remember the early pioneers in women’s sports helped make a difference with Title IX. “Women before me were fighting hard to make that happen for me and I was watching.

It was coming out of the Billie Jean King-era starting with Title IX, and then the women of Utah, who…played a part in this Title IX. Those women paved the way for me to be able to play,” she said. “When you look at it from where it went from Bobby Socks (recreational league) to playing in high school and then getting a scholarship and getting to play in college, I’m grateful. The women before me, they didn’t get that chance. I got that chance. I watched it evolve and it was a privilege.” l

The Midvale City Planning Commission is made up of five members and two alternates. Planning Commissioners are appointed for four-year terms by the mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. The Commission is in a manner to provide a balanced geographic, professional, neighborhood, and community interest representation of the community.

Members are required to reside within Midvale City limits.

What does the Planning Commission do?

The Planning Commission is responsible for making recommendations to the City Council on the City’s General Plan (a document to guide growth, development and redevelopment throughout the City), Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances (rules for development, redevelopment

Fans rush the court in overtime thriller for Huskies first hardwood win

ith less than three seconds in regulation, 6-foot-5-inch junior Micah Madry rebounded and put the ball in the hoop to send the Hillcrest High versus Herriman High game into overtime.

“He made a huge shot,” head coach Brandon Sluga said. “I don’t know if I drew anything up very well, but I wanted Micah, his big strong body, close to the hoop, and that worked out OK where the ball bounced, and he tipped it in just as the buzzer was sounding. That was a huge shot and gave us that chance we needed to get to overtime.”

After the shot went in, the homestand fans and his teammate’s roars echoed off the new arena, but Sluga remembered, “My thought was we’re going to win the game. I didn’t have any doubt we were going to go and finish the game off. And that’s what I just told them. Those are the kind of games that you just come back, and you find a way to win.”

Husky fans stormed the court after Hillcrest won its first game of the season in overtime, 63-60.

“That’s what I would like for every experience to be like in our gym. Something that our captain (senior shooting guard) Porter Nielson talked about at the (winter sports

pep rally) was that we wanted the basketball experience for the whole school to be exciting, something that they want to be a part of and that it’s fun. I think that’s exactly what happened. It was an exciting time and that’s what high school basketball should be like.

Regardless of whether we win or lose, I hope we play with that fervor and the kids can feel it and want to come back for more,” Sluga said.

Coming off that first game, Sluga was complimentary about passes made from junior point guard Maddux Albers to free throws made at the end of the game by Albers, Madry and senior point guard Solomon Sebresos.

“We shot 78% from the foul line. The first half we were getting to the line, but we weren’t shooting at that clip. We just told them you’re going to make those in the second half. You’ve been practicing, you’ve been shooting well in practice, so just compose yourself and go knock the foul shots down for your team and they did a heck of a job of that,” he said. “I think something that surprised maybe some of the boys on the team or surprised people in the stands was Solomon Barrows’s play. He had more steals than he did points. He’s just all over the floor,

and he’s the kind of kid that glues your team together. He doesn’t really care how much he scores, although he can score, and he will do anything you ask him to. At one point, he was guarding a 6-foot-5-inch kid and the kid was trying to post him up, and got him one time, but that’s all. He’s a small kid, but he has a big heart and toughness, and he makes up for his size with how hard he plays.”

After the game, Sluga said, “We compliment them, we praise them for what they did, we reinforce we got to do this again throughout the season. Then, we critique and teach and reteach and figure out what we got to get better at from watching the film or from our evaluation as a coaching staff.”

Hillcrest, who graduated three starters and six seniors, begins region play in January facing mostly new teams this year in 5A region 7, where Sluga said it’s “a region where anybody could win on any night.” He sees Payson and Cottonwood having an edge up on the other teams, but Stansbury “returns players from a good team last year,” already “Cedar Valley upset Timpview, Uintah is always tough, and Tooele is one of the toughest places to play.”

“We’re going to have to beat people with quickness in some games. I think that’s a big deal for us. I think if we’re shorter and not

quicker, then the thing we’re going to rely on the most is just trying to play five on five, not one on one, and that’s where we’re trying to teach our kids how to play team basketball,” he said.

Affirming his belief in team basketball, Sluga, a former walk-on for the University of Utah under Rick Majerus, brought in his college teammate Andre Miller in June, who played in the NBA for 17 years, to talk to the team.

Players appreciated hearing stories about the great players, Sluga said, but Miller shared “regardless of the great players or great coaches they have had, our favorite coach, the coach that taught us the most was our college coach. A lot of the guys that are on my coaching staff, and those guys that played in the NBA were kind of cut from the same cloth. He told them ‘trust your coaches, they know what they’re talking about, they care about you, listen to them, they’ve got a lot to offer.’”

Along with Sluga, returning coaches are his assistant, Jeff Myaer, a former Phillies minor-league pitcher “who has been successful in every sport he’s coached” from AAU basketball to state titles at Judge Memorial High in basketball and baseball; and Caleb Davis, “my right-hand man for X’s and O’s and providing statistics.”

New to the coaching team are all former Utes: Andy Tanner, Richard Chaney and Jay Watkins.

“They’ve played professionally and that goes a long way to being a good coach. They can come in and teach me things and I have no problem learning from my staff. That’s an asset,” Sluga said.

The Huskies had 80 students try out for the team, which Sluga said, “I think that’s great that kids want to play. It tells me there’s a little buzz in the school that boys’ basketball is exciting and you’re going to enjoy your experience there if you go play.”

He was especially happy with how many younger kids came to try out.

“We were able to pick some kids that we didn’t really know much about and they’re doing a good job for our younger levels,” he said, adding that the Bantam league in middle school has three teams playing per grade at the fifth- through eighth-grade levels. “We want to keep kids playing and give them an opportunity to grow and get better.”

After the team was announced, Sluga brought in another Ute teammate, Michael Doleac, who won a NBA title while on the Miami Heat.

“Michael talked about building a culture and how important it was to us at Utah, but also to the guys here on our staff, that the culture we’re trying to build it’s about basketball, but it goes beyond that,” Sluga said.

“The caring that we have for each other and the relationships we build, those are things that you’re going to take with you as you move forward in life.” l

Hillcrest girls’ basketball coach resigns after season’s first win

A

bsent at the 58-54 victory at Kearns High School was Hillcrest High girls’ basketball coach Matteo Dal Monte.

The Huskies, which on Dec. 7 was coached to their first win of the season by assistant coach Anthony Alford, learned at practice the next day that Dal Monte resigned for personal reasons.

“He’s a good, calm, collected, solid coach,” Principal Greg Leavitt said about Dal Monte.

Freshman/sophomore coach Alyssa Nielsen, who knows the players and the program, has been appointed interim head coach. A search for a new head coach will follow this year’s season, Leavitt said.

In a letter to parents, Nielsen outlined her playing career as a three-sport high school athlete in Duchesne, Utah, followed by playing both basketball and softball at Colorado Northwestern Community College in Craig. She joined the Hillcrest basketball staff last year.

“As I am stepping into this new role, I have high hopes for these girls and what they

can accomplish,” she wrote. “I am dedicated to making this season the very best I can for every girl involved.”

Dal Monte joined the basketball staff as an assistant coach in 2018. After his initial season, he became the freshman/sophomore team coach. Last year, he was named head coach.

Last year, the team lost in the first-round of state playoffs to Bountiful High.

In a letter to the Hillcrest community, Dal Monte, who also missed coaching a game against Box Elder High this season, said that with his other positions at the school, he felt the “girls deserve a head coach who can be fully present and ready to handle the rigors of a high school season, and Coach Alyssa is prepared and equipped to take over as the interim head coach to finish out the season.”

Dal Monte also wrote he appreciated the support of the program from parents and the community for “being the best fans for our student-athletes.”

The Huskies will begin its region play Jan. 5 at Stansbury High. l

Find joy in winter by embracing outdoor activities

I

n just a few weeks, Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog in Gobbler’s Knob, Pennsylvania, will emerge to predict when winter will end. For many people who hate the cold days, grey skies, and treacherous icy roads, they hope Phil does not see his shadow and predicts an early spring.

When Herriman residents were polled about how they feel about winter, 25% replied that they absolutely hate winter and are already counting down the days until spring.

The cold and darkness are some of the factors why winter months trigger the onset of seasonal affective disorder or SAD, a type of depression that is related to a change in seasons.

Herriman’s Celeste Barrow Bruening said, “About mid-October I start to notice a drastic change in my attitude and outlook on life. I get an overwhelming feeling of dread just thinking about the cold. I hate everything about it. Not necessarily the snow, just the cold. The short dark days are a struggle and the grey, cloudy atmosphere is depressing.”

According to Mental Health America, Bruening is not alone as SAD affects over 10 million Americans a year. If you experience symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, please consult a mental health provider.

With the milder Utah winters in recent years, even winter haters admit that the snow is necessary for summer water levels. Herriman’s Katie Jo Stratton said, “I don’t love the snow like I did when I skied. But I want it to snow like it did in the ‘90s so we can have all the water we need in the lakes to play!”

By Karmel Harper | k.harper@mycityjournals.com Although most Utahns recognize snow is necessary for our desert state, the darkness, the cold, and the dangerous driving conditions incite a teeth-chattering, snow-shoveling, white-knuckle-driving tolerance of the season.

However, many Utahns absolutely love winter and all of the beauty and outdoor recreation it brings. The Brown family from South Jordan look forward to winter every year as they are avid skiers. Amanda Brown even works at Park City Mountain Resort every season for the sole purpose of providing ski lessons for her four children who range in age from six to 12. Brown said, “Winter can be long and dreary if you allow it to be. We wanted to instill a love of the season in our children at an early age by enrolling them in ski lessons since they were very young. Now we look forward to it every year as we can get outside as a family and enjoy something active together.”

Kaysville’s Margot Marrs Pauni said, “I absolutely hated winter and counted the days until it was over, and then I learned to ski. It made a huge difference in my attitude and mental well-being. Now I look forward to winter.” Pauni has been skiing for over 3 years.

If gliding downhill at 20+ mph while dodging other people and trees is not your thing, there are a multitude of other winter activities to try to experience Utah’s famous “Greatest Snow on Earth.”. Exploring our spectacular mountains is extremely popular during the spring, summer and fall, but winter hiking is in a class of its own. A trail that you have hiked many times during other

seasons will look completely different when it is covered with snow and provides a new experience. Creeks will have frozen sections with icicles adorning rocky edges. Waterfalls will be partially or completely frozen, giving you a breathtaking and magical view. Trails such as Ogden’s Waterfall Canyon and Layton’s Adam’s Canyon offer awesome winter adventures with picture perfect vistas that Jack Frost will be proud of.

Herriman’s Rachel Dekker Moody said, “There is something magical about going for a ‘snow globe’ run early in the morning and hearing the crunch of snow under your feet and knowing you are the first footprints out for the day!”

Though cycling is typically a warm weather sport, winter riding has become popular since fat bikes emerged on the market. While standard mountain bikes have tire widths anywhere between 1.6” and 2.6”, a fat bike’s tires are 3.7” to 5”, allowing the rider to cruise through on snow-packed trails with greater traction and better handling.

Sledding or inner tubing is another popular winter activity, and you don’t even have to go up into the mountains to enjoy it. Even a local park or neighborhood with a good slope can serve as a decent sledding hill. Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City and Eaglewood Golf Course in North Salt Lake have awesome hills that are free to sled and tube on. Or visit a designated sledding park such as Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in

Midway or Woodward in Park City.

Avid fishermen don’t need to pack up their poles for the season as ice fishing is popular in Utah. Frozen lakes such as Strawberry Reservoir and even local ponds such as Farmington Pond and Bountiful Pond attract anglers of all ages once the ice is thick enough. The website Best Fishing in America said, “The season typically starts in mid to late December in Utah, depending on the weather. There are years when the hard water doesn’t set in until mid-January, while other years, it can happen in late November.

A good rule of thumb is that 4 inches is thick enough for an average person, 5-6 inches is suitable for a snowmobile or 4-wheeler, and 8-12 inches will support a truck.”

Ice anglers use an ice auger with a 6-8” bit to drill a hole in the ice large enough to pull caught fish through. In addition to the appropriate fishing equipment, other gear such as ice tents and tent heaters can be used for additional warmth and comfort. The Watkins family from Davis County look forward to ice fishing every winter. Kaysville’s Shaylee Watkins said, “I love ice fishing because it’s fun to sit and snack out in a heated tent on the ice and get nice and comfy and kick your boots off.” North Salt Lake’s Challis Watkins said, “Ice fishing is like fishing but way better.”

It is important to be prepared before venturing outside during the winter months.

Tolerating the cold is much easier with proper clothing and gear. Dressing in layers is a good practice because you will warm up as your activity level increases and you will be much more comfortable removing or adding

layers as needed.

REI’s website suggests three basic layers: “1) Base layer (underwear layer): wicks sweat off your skin, 2) Middle layer (insulating layer): retains body heat to protect you from the cold, and 3) Outer layer (shell layer): shields you from wind and rain. Even if you don’t wear all three layers at the outset, it’s a good idea to take all layers on every outing. You can peel off layers if things heat up, but you can’t put on layers that you didn’t bring along.”

Other important gear includes warm head and ear coverings such as beanies and ear muffs, scarves, and waterproof gloves.

Proper shoes such as waterproof boots that provide warmth and traction are a necessity.

For additional traction, particularly on steep icy terrain, use crampons or microspikes, a mechanism that typically consists of spikes and chains that fit over your shoes and can be easily slipped off and on the trails as needed.

Driving during the winter is a big reason why many people hate the season so pre-

paring your vehicle for the cooler months is important. Tips for winterizing your vehicle include testing your battery and tire pressure as battery power and tire pressure drop when the air temperature drops, changing to winter tires, checking wiper blades and replacing if needed, and always keeping at least a half tank of gas. Tips for winter driving include driving slower, increasing your following distance, and accelerating and decelerating slowly. But if it is snowing heavily, the best practice is to stay home if you can and avoid unnecessary risks.

Someone once said, “If you choose not to find joy in snow, you will have less joy in your life but the same amount of snow.”

With proper gear, clothing, and other preparations to keep you warm along with an adventurous spirit to try something new, perhaps the multitude of winter activities Utah offers can coax your inner Elsa out as you declare, “The cold never bothered me anyway.” l

Home Makeover: COVID edition

One morning I woke up and I’d had enough. The pandemic had forced us to look at our walls and carpet 24/7 and every day the chips in the paint got bigger and the stains on the carpet got wider. Was that blood or pudding? I couldn’t tell anymore.

It was time to take action.

My husband tends to overthink in a death-spiral sort of way, so our conversation went from “What kind of paint/flooring should we get?” to “What if we spend two weeks with our dog in a tent in a blizzard?” I let him ruminate for a while before moving to the next phase.

We talked about painting the rooms ourselves and laughed hysterically for a couple of hours. We are not the DIY kind of people.

We once assembled a bookshelf together so I knew we needed to hire a professional; either a professional painter or a professional divorce attorney.

We reached out to our friend, Rick Hepner, who was delighted to paint our home, plus he got to enjoy our 4-year-old granddaughter following him around asking him what he was doing, why he was doing it, how long he’d be doing it and if he wanted to play Barbies.

While preparing the walls, Rick discovered ecosystems behind our furniture where sentient beings lived in and breathed only dust.

He waded through chest-deep dust like we were living in the Oklahoma Dust Bowl era, or

Once the dust was hauled away and the walls were beautifully painted, we turned our attention to the floors. Our carpet crossed the prairie in the back of a handcart, survived nuclear testing in Southern Utah and was definitely sprouting tentacles. Time to toss it before it murdered us in our sleep.

Then came the discussion of wood versus carpet. My husband is old school and likes soft carpeting, probably so he doesn’t break a hip if he falls. I like the clean line of wood. We compromised with me getting wood flooring in my office, and carpet everywhere else; except the bathroom. We’re not animals.

When it came time to move furniture out of the house, I threw things away willy-nilly.

I took bags of clothes and shoes and children to Goodwill. My husband followed behind me, taking things out of donation bags and hiding them. He has sentimental attachments to items like water bottles and lanyards and the blouse I wore when we saw the Blue Man Group in 2008.

Finally, the walls were painted, flooring was complete, furniture was moved back and everything was right with the world. But our dog was hyperventilating.

Before renovation (BR), she’d nap under the guest bed, which is now in another home.

She wandered the halls, forlorn and lost, carrying her bone from room to room, trying to navigate her apocalyptic new world.

Not only that, but the wood floor distressed her and she refused to walk on it. She slept on the couch until midnight. Then I heard her toenails clicking as she walked across the floor and threw herself onto her bed, sighing loudly, so we’d know she’d been inconvenienced.

But walls get scratched and carpet gets stained because life is a messy, dirty, grimy experiment where sometimes you don’t know if the stain on the carpet is blood or pudding, and your dog needs therapy, and your husband unpacks the donation bags.
