FLOURISH BAKERY MOVES TO MIDVALE AFTER LONG SEARCH FOR NEW HOME

A

unique nonprofit that helps individuals recover from addiction or incarceration has finally found a home.

Flourish Bakery, a social enterprise of Flourish Ventures, had operated out of Salt Lake Community College for two years. In October 2019, SLCC determined that they needed the space for other programs and Flourish suddenly needed to find a new kitchen.

The organization spent 10 months looking for a new location, touring multiple buildings throughout the valley. They found the perfect space at 752 W. Center Street in Midvale. The commercial kitchen, formerly occupied by JK’s Indulgence Catering, has plenty of space, countertops, a walk-in refrigerator and commercial mixers.

“This location couldn’t be better,” said Rev. Aimee Altizer, executive director of Flourish Bakery and Flourish Ventures. “If I dared to dream and have everything we needed in one perfect location, that would be this location. We’re discovering Midvale. The old Main Street has beautiful bones, so much history.

To be part of the revitalization is very exciting to us.”

Flourish itself is all about revitalizing lives.

“The interns learn culinary and also life skills,” Altizer said. “They learn their personality types and learning styles.

There’s empowerment in that process. People that get in trouble in school have different learning styles. They need hands-on experience or to be shown how to physically do things. You often find those individuals in culinary settings and addiction.

“Aimee recognized that recovery was a revolving door, if they were lucky,” said Rev. Sandra Jones, chair of Flourish’s board of directors. “What seemed to be missing was this bridge, this community of people also in recovery taking this journey. The opportunity to learn a skill that’s needed while earning money, being supported and also held accountable.”

Interns get help creating bank accounts and improving credit scores through a partnership with Fair Credit, another nonprofit organization. Interns are paid $12 an hour for 32 to 40 hours per week, which enables them to pay for their living expenses and manage their own lives.

Flourish also hopes to become a part of Midvale’s community.

“One of the concepts we talked about (while forming the nonprofit) was community,” Jones said. “Not just Flourish, but also the greater community. Have the community meet the interns and dispel myths about people in recovery.”

Interns come from a variety of backgrounds.

“One of the first graduates was in construction,” Jones said. “It was winter, and she didn’t want to be in the cold. She got very good at decorating cakes.”

Completing an internship at Flourish requires a full year of staying sober while working in the bakery, then completing a threemonth externship. So far, two interns have completed the entire program and two are working toward completion.

Dennis Sisneros has been with Flourish for 14 months due to the interruptions of the COVID-19 outbreak and losing access to a kitchen. He was excited to start working at the new Midvale location, once one change had been made: uncovering a large window that had been blocked off.

“I wanted the light,” Sisneros said.

“There are very few windows in prison.”

Sisneros grew up in West Valley and began using drugs at age 13. He sold drugs for more than a decade and spent six years in prison.

“I had nothing to fall back on,” Sisneros said. “All I had was using and selling drugs.

I was living the criminal lifestyle my whole life. Today, I’m learning a new trade and being 100% accountable for my actions.”

Sisneros has had a lot of firsts since starting at Flourish—his first apartment, first time opening a bank account, first time voting and paying taxes.

“I asked (Aimee) why did you start this?”

Sisneros said. “It was simple for her to answer.

‘I’m sick of seeing people die.’ And that’s where I was headed, if I didn’t change my life. A life of institutions or death. I got sick of prison this last time, said I’d do anything to change.”

Sisneros says that he was sober in prison because he had to be. Now he is emotionally sober as well as physically sober because he learned to deal with his demons.

“I will be the third graduate from Flourish,” he said. “I say that with such conviction because I’m in a good place in my head.”

Flourish provides something that Sisneros never had before: stability.

“Here you always have someone in your corner,” Sisneros said. “Aimee is a minister so we have God in our lives. We say a prayer when done with reflection session. How many of you have a minister that sees you every day of your life?”

When he’s done with his externship, Sisneros wants to return to Flourish as a baker.

“Don’t you want to be an instructor?” wondered Sean Oviatt, an intern who has been with Flourish for two months.

Oviatt took a different path to Flourish.

He was a college-educated business owner when he saw his life go downhill quickly after becoming addicted to meth.

“I lost my family. I lost friends,” Oviatt said. “I only spent 13 days in jail. I’m grateful for the legal system, never thought I’d say that.

If not for getting caught and the judge saying I needed substance abuse help, I wouldn’t be here.”

Oviatt heard about Flourish from the employment counselor at his halfway house.

At 52, he struggled to find employment and jumped at the opportunity to join a program where he wouldn’t be starting over at the bottom.

“I had 10 years of food experience, though they didn’t ask about that,” Oviatt said.

“The application asks for three important life events and what I learned from them. That’s the whole application. That lets you know what this is about. (Flourish) takes the disenfranchised, the hopeless. Gives them an opening of light. This is not a job. This is a program to reenter life.”

interns and instructors. In addition to catering and food truck sales, the bakery opened a storefront adjacent to the kitchen in November.

“Interns learn a full spectrum of pastry and culinary skills and the items in the store will match their training module,” Altizer said.

“Custards, pies, fruit tarts, cookies, bread, and new things we have yet to create. People can make purchases and meet the team.”

It may have taken nearly a year for Flourish to find its new location, but everyone agrees it was worth the wait.

“One of the great things about Flourish, whenever we hit a roadblock, we would just keep going,” Jones said. “Whenever we hit a wall, a door would appear. Even if not the right door, it gave us hope to keep going.” l

The state of Midvale’s snow plows this winter

T

he first snow is on its way. What will happen on Midvale streets this year?

Complaints with Midvale City snow removal are common. When City Journals asked a Facebook group called “Midvale Residents” for experiences, 11 residents voiced dissatisfaction, none came forward with a positive opinion.

Hollie Nichol-Valenzuela said, “When driving on Ft. Union Blvd. in Midvale [I’m] sliding all over the road because of the poor snow removal. As soon as you cross the intersection at 1300 East where it becomes Cottonwood Heights, the roads are clear and not icy or slippery whatsoever.”

Another concern for residents is when cars are parked on the side of the road, even though the City asks residents to keep roads clear during the winter months.

Amanda June Gundersen said, “The only complaint I have is they say ‘no parking on the road between these months so the plows can be more effective.’ But, nobody enforces it in my neighborhood so when they plow it can't be done very well. The plows are trying to get around all the cars.”

Some residents say they have to make a call to the City for their street to be cleared at all. Amanda Lynn Kavanagh said, “I have lived in a cul-de-sac in Midvale since 2011.

I had to call every [time it] snowed for the plow to come clear…It was frustrating.”

Some roads in Midvale are the responsibility of UDOT such as State Street and

7200 South, west of State Street. The rest of the city sidewalks and roads are cared for

by Midvale City. Does the City have what it takes to keep up with snow demands?

Public Works has two 10-wheeler plows with salters, four small plows with smaller salters, and four trucks that move snow but have no salters.

Midvale City has a goal to plow all streets within a day, but excess snow and improperly parked cars are a problem for the plow truck drivers, too.

“Six inches or more is considered not normal for our area. We try to get the city done in 24-hours but under those conditions it doesn’t usually happen. Some of the other limitations include abandoned or improperly parked vehicles, traffic congestion, garbage cans, etc.,” said Al Hoyne, Public Works operations superintendent.

Keeping ice off roads takes salt, which the City used more of last winter than in previous years. On average, they used 150 to 200 tons of salt in a 12-hour period. Salt costs $23 a ton, which means one storm can cost $3,450 to $4,600 just for salt. Will the City have enough funds to provide salt through the winter? Last year, Public Works needed to rely on some extra funding from the operations budget, but they won’t be able to do that this year.

“Our salt budget as it stands currently is $19,000. However...we will be requesting an additional $8,000 in an upcoming budget

amendment with Council,” Public Works Director Glen Kennedy said.

Pre-COVID, Public Works asked for $2,000 more than they are now.

Councilmember Dustin Gettel asked if anything else would be different because of the pandemic.

“Is our snow plan going to be impacted in any way?” Gettel asked.

“Our resources are spread thin. If we

have equipment breakdown or anybody is out sick, or if we have a mass COVID quarantine, this will affect our operations this winter. It gets tricky to predict when you need to send someone home to get some sleep,” Kennedy said.

“There will be pros and cons. There will be less traffic but more cars on the roads because people are home,” Kennedy said. l

After solid start, Hillcrest runners race to unexpected finish

I

n what Hillcrest coach Scott Stucki describes as “interesting,” many of his cross country runners opted to self-quarantine to ensure they would be able to run in the final races of the season.

While having solid performances, especially from his seniors through most of the season, Stucki was pleased with the girls team third place at region, led by freshman Anna Ames’ 12th place finish, and the boys fourth place, led by senior Anthony Davies, who won the race.

Then, overall, the girls had their only “disappointing” race of the season finishing 12th at the new divisional race, which left them out of state meet for the first time in seven years. Senior Megan Liddiard qualified individually, and raced to place 105th at the meet, which was moved to Soldier Hollow to help with social distancing.

“When I look back at the season, I can put the disappointment about not qualifying for state in perspective and can see how much we improved from last year; we just had one bad race and it was at the worst possible time,” he said. “Even the boys are running

faster than before.”

The boys team finished fourth at region, ninth at divisionals before they had their state race which Stucki described overall as a team as, “we didn’t finish where we could have, but we finished where we should have” in 18th place.

Davies individually finished second at

divisionals and third at state, the highest finish for a Husky since 2009, which also was a third-place finish.

Stucki was particularly pleased with sophomore Sam Timmerman’s state run, described as “a really great race” where he finished third for the team on the hard, hilly course.

“We are losing our biggest group of seniors on the girls team we’ve had in a long time. Next year, our girls team only has a couple returning varsity runners, but we’ll have runners we can move up,” Stucki said.

“The boys lost a big talented group last year.

Next year, we’ll have a strong team, with five of our top nine runners coming back.” l

Midvale homeless sheltering for the winter

arly November, Midvale City received news they may be host to a new temporary winter homeless shelter. The state’s organization Shelter the Homeless and the Salt Lake Valley Coalition to End Homelessness have looked for temporary winter sheltering for the past several months. There are no concrete plans to house more homeless in Midvale. The coalition is currently considering other possible locations.

Mayor Robert Hale was apprehensive.

“With so much territory in the Salt Lake Valley, why would we have two really close here when no other city has two except Salt Lake and those are widely separated. I expressed my concerns.”

FUNDING Hale was concerned that the city may not receive enough funding to offset potential additional costs this winter shelter may bring.

“We were underfunded $958,000 in 2019 and $328,000 in 2020,” Hale said.

Midvale City Manager Kane Loader said that supplemental funding for homeless sheltering will continue.

“The county and state are providing some of the funding for winter overflow,” Hill said.

he highlight for the Hillcrest High girls’ varsity soccer team clearly came 12 games into their season on Sept. 17 when they faced Cottonwood High on the Colts home turf—and on their senior night.

“They had a lot at stake,” Hillcrest coach Eldon Brough said. “We had come off four hard games, but had a good week of practice.

The girls were positive and played their heart out. Not a lot of teams would do that with so many losses.”

The Huskies, with two goals from junior Grace Pruden, shut out the Colts in Hillcrest’s only win and two of the seven scores in their 17-game season.

“My kids shot their best and had a lot of improvement,” he said. “They’re getting better all the time.”

Richardson is celebrating the players’ improvements as the team plays against tough schools, including state champions Skyline High, and placed last in region and didn’t win a single tournament. Other region schools Olympus and Brighton also placed in the top eight at state.

“We got some points, but we didn’t win a dual,” he said. “Golf, like tennis, is a country club sport and we’re in a region with other schools above our socio-economic level, so we’re considered the poor westside school. In our old region, we could compete and were considered the eastside school.”

He applauded this season’s consistent play from junior Braden Rosenhan, sophomore Jeb Thomas and freshman Matthew Miller, and hopes that they will lead the team next fall to more success.

Under new head coach, Melissa Guymon, Hillcrest volleyball beat Highland in region play, ending up 1-13 and finishing 3-24 overall. Through the season, the players focused on improving their serving and passing.

“Our last home game versus East, our senior night, we ended up losing in five (matches), but our serving was phenomenal, tougher, more precise, and our passing overall was 1.9, which was great for us,” she said, adding that passing is evaluated on a zero to three scale, with three as the best pass possible.

Although they won an earlier game against Highland High, where Guymon said the team’s overall offense was better, the East High game showed their progress with serves and passes.

Hillcrest’s other wins were against Cyprus and Ben Lomond high schools. The Huskies were eliminated in the first round of state playoffs by Timpview High, which went on to win the state title.

I know it is foolish to wish one’s life away, but isn’t that exactly what we have all come to desire: The unfolding of a brighter, less foreboding future, full of enjoyment with family, friends, fellow students, neighbors, work associates, fellow church-members, and, to be frank, perfect strangers.

Have you taken a moment to ask yourself just exactly how you plan to live and act during a future that is not overshadowed by this COVID-19 virus? I have. I think it will compare to my experiences when I first entered a foreign country. (In my seven decades I have entered Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Japan, England, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and France.) If you have also entered a foreign country, you will remember how closely you hung to the known, rather than tackling the unknown right away. That is how my mind imagines it will be after we know this pandemic is behind the vast majority of us. In other words, over this nine-month period, we have developed habits (since habits only take three weeks to form) that we will at first be shy to set aside. As we review the consequences of our actions – or lack of consequences – we will adjust to a new normal again.

This is the point upon which I want to concentrate this article: How will you and I then treat ourselves, our minds and bodies, our family, our neighbors, our work associates, our fellow

church-members, and yes, perfect strangers? All these relationships have been put to the test! Which ones are the most valued?

Which ones deserve strengthening? Which ones can be set aside because they caused us injury, whether mentally, physically or spiritually? Are we going to just jump backwards to where we were in early 2020?

I believe each of us will come to the realization that we must not jump backwards, but must jump forwards into a new chapter in our lives that is more fulfilling, more service oriented, more neighborly, more full of desire for a healthy self and meaningful family relationships.

Now my fellow residents of Midvale, soon you and I will have an opportunity to visit our doctor’s office, a clinic, or a pharmacy in order to receive an inoculation, a shot, a vaccination, however it will be described, that will have the full blessings of the medical sciences to protect us from, or relieve us from the symptoms of this pandemic virus. Take advantage of this time to choose to become a part of the long-awaited solution against or protection from the COVID-19 virus. This will be a decision when we can assure our family, neighbors, and the perfect stranger, that we were willing to take the brief pain for the greater good of the society we live in. Let’s be wise!

In The Middle of Everything WINTER ON-STREET PARKING If there are cars parked on the streets, plows can’t fully clear the roads and run the risk of hitting parked vehicles.

Residents are not permitted to park any vehicle on city streets where one inch of snow has accumulated. The parking prohibition shall remain in effect for 24 hours after snow has ceased to fall, or until such time as the snow has been removed from the street. (Midvale Municipal Code Section 10.16.120).

Residents should be mindful of the weather and make arrangements to park off the streets when snow is forecasted.

Utility Billing FAQ’s – Water Meter Reading Utility Billing receives many questions each month. Here are answers to a few of the most frequently asked questions about how meters are read and billed: HOW IS MY METER READ? Most water meters are read electronically. City staff drive down a street at very low speeds (usually 15 miles per hour or less). Through radio frequency, the read is transmitted to a data collector. Once collected, the reads are transferred to the Utility Billing software, which then bills the accounts, along with other services (such as garbage, sewer, storm drain, and street light fees).

City staff can also collect a “manual” read from your water meter. This is done by opening the lid on the water meter barrel, opening the lid on the water meter, shining a light on the solar panel, and noting the read.

WHAT IF THE CITY CAN’T COLLECT A READ? If, for some reason, the City is not able to collect a read for a meter, a usage estimate will be used. The estimate is normally the consumption for the same period in the prior year. For example, if an estimate is needed in September 2020, September 2019’s actual consumption would be used. Utility Billing reviews every estimate for reasonableness.

WHY COULDN’T THE CITY COLLECT A READ? There are several reasons why the City can’t collect an actual read. Some of these reasons include: 1) There is an object blocking the meter (such as a vehicle parked over the meter).

2) The City cannot access the meter (such as an HOA changing a private gate code).

3) There are hazards preventing the City from collecting a read (such as construction).

4) The meter has failed.

As with many things, water meters can slow down or fail over time. When a meter completely fails, water is still flowing through the meter, but the meter does not register the usage. This necessitates using an estimated read until the meter can be replaced. The City has invested over $500,000 in a three-year program to replace 3,268 meters (this is over 45 percent of the City’s meters).

HOW CAN I TELL IF MY WATER CONSUMPTION HAS BEEN ESTIMATED? Beginning with your November bill, the verbiage “estimated read” will be next to billed consumption on the bill:

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY METER READING IS ACCURATE? All meters are calibrated and tested at the meter factory before being shipped. The American Water Works Association requires accuracy limits between 98.5% and 101.5%. Much like other mechanical devices, meters slow down with age and can eventually stop registering completely but cannot arbitrarily run faster than they were designed to run. The mechanical parts are not capable of “speeding up” or registering a significantly higher reading than actual.

Although it is very uncommon, it is possible City staff reads the meter incorrectly (if a manual read is recorded) or the meter is set up incorrectly in the utility billing software.

Because of this, Utility Billing reviews suspected high or low reads before billings are sent out. This review may involve sending City staff out to collect a manual read.

Virtual Book Buddies

At Salt Lake County Animal Services, we have relaunched and expanded our Book Buddies program virtually! This is the perfect volunteer opportunity for children and a way to sooth a shelter pet.

Children sign up to read to a shelter pet from their home. The program helps them improve their reading skills while helping shelter animals with socialization. Dogs and cats find the rhythmic sounds of a voice very soothing.

This is for beginning level readers and up.

Book Buddies has been a volunteer program for children at Salt Lake County Animal Services since 2016. Due to Covid-19, we have adjusted the program because we want children to have an opportunity to interact with pets at the shelter.

HOW BOOK BUDDIES WORKS: Parents sign their child up for a 10-minute reading session at bit.ly/slco_bookbuddies Upon registration, the participant will receive an email with a Zoom link for the upcoming session.

They work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, nonstop during a storm or ice event to ensure the safety of the traveling public, to provide access to businesses so that commerce is as uninterrupted as possible, to open emergency routes to hospitals, fire stations, to help school buses arrive on time and safely, for trash collection services to be continued, and to allow all of us the freedom to accomplish many other daily activities.

Each winter storm is slightly different and requires different approaches as it relates to snow and ice management. Midvale City’s Public Works has a Snow Plan which can be modified before and during the storm. Basic policies are set forth with approval from staff and council. The snow and ice management process is dependent on the type of precipitation; depth of snow, sleet or ice; temperature of air and pavement; and timing of winter weather events.

Snow and ice control operations are expensive and involve the use of limited personnel and equipment. During a snow event, snow removal becomes a 24/7 operation until all priority streets, collectors, and arterials are cleared. Personnel are divided into crews working alternating 12-hour schedules depending on the shift that they are assigned.

PRIORITIES The Public Works snow crews plow top priority and highvolume roadways first, followed by collector streets and residential through streets. Once conditions have been stabilized on first- and second-priority routes, crews will begin to clear City owned parking areas, cul-de-sacs and dead-end roads (there are currently 125 cul-de-sacs/dead-ends in Midvale City). Midvale police chief speaks on traumatic crimes, officers mental health

ithin three months, one group of officers responded to three calls, one of which ended with a violent death and traumatized children. The following presentation was made by Midvale Unified Police Chief Randy Thomas in a Midvale City Council meeting in November.

“The graveyard crew in the last 90 days has come across three very significant and traumatic incidents: Two homicides as well as a young man who hung himself.

“These things tend to build up and we have to look out for [the officers] mental welfare and health, so Lieutenant Malone and I are looking into that. You can give them a commendation for their good deeds, their great public safety and service but we want to look out for their mental health,” Thomas said.

The two homicide stories were covered by daily news sources, but there is more to those stories.

Each of these incidents occurred within one week of each other, Friday to Friday.

“We had a domestic violence call that resulted in a tragic death. It was extremely unfortunate that two children had to witness that event. Our officers on scene tended to those children who had fled the residence to the safety of a neighbor’s house. In a quick debrief from the children, it was determined that

they had to take immediate action and enter the house where the event occurred. The officers made a quick and hasty entry and found one deceased and one in critical condition.

“As I arrived on scene, I saw Carmen Contreras, our victim advocate, with the kids taking them out of the ambulance. One of the children suffered some fairly good cuts to the hand and had to be taken to the hospital,” Thomas explained.

“The little girl that had a cut hand was actually wearing her Halloween outfit. She was supposed to go to a Halloween party that night and she was really excited about that. We had to take that from her and bag that for evidence.

“Our investigative unit, out of their own pockets, bought about $400 worth of clothing for those kids so they could attend those events,” he said.

“Carmen worked for two days straight

with the families on both sides getting legal assistance, [and] arranging for cleanup....She went out at the end of the week with the Gail Miller grant and purchased the funeral clothing for the children. The families have been very grateful. Carmen went to the services. It was a really good healing process for the family.”

A week after the homicide, the same officers were on shift and responded to a shooting.

“One of the involved that was shot ran into the WinCo seeking help. Once again, [the officers] attended to the victim and ended up putting a tourniquet on the gentleman because he was bleeding quite heavily and probably saved his life.” l

Sink or swim? Hillcrest swimmers hope season remains afloat this year

I

n early November, Hillcrest High junior Zoe Welch was quarantined when her mother contracted COVID-19. The swim captain was missing the water and had already missed the first meet of the season.

“I love the water,” she said. “I focus on my technique and that has really helped me improve. Swimming makes me more energetic and happier.”

What she—and many didn’t know—was that she wouldn’t be the only one restricted to dry land. A Nov. 8 COVID-19 health mandate from Gov. Gary Herbert stated no extracurricular high school activities for two weeks, which included every high school sport that wasn’t in a championship run. It was ordered through Nov. 23.

Hillcrest head coach Ryan Thierbach wasn’t sure about the outlook of the season.

“I hope that it does not have a huge impact on our season, but honestly I am afraid that it might,” he said. “By putting the swim season on hold for two weeks, that is two weeks that the majority of my swimmers are out of the water. They will have lost most of what they have gained in the preseason. This is at least two meets that all of the athletes are going to be out. It could be three. I sent out an email to all of my athletes about swim meets and all practices being canceled for the next two weeks. I pleaded with my athletes to follow the governor’s mandates and to do everything in their power to get us back in the water as quickly as possible. ” Thierbach, who brought back former head coach Tom Huddlestone to help with the season, said he hopes to reschedule those meets (versus Jordan, versus Mountain Ridge and possible, versus Highland) in December.

However, swim meets, too, have been tricky as Salt Lake County is only allowing 50 people total in the pool area, Thierbach said.

Between officials—starter and timers—coaches, and swimmers for just two teams, that number exceeds the maximum number. So, 11 of the 13 Hillcrest meets were scheduled at non-county facilities.

“We looked at swimming boys or girls or varsity and JV separately, but that gets to be kind of a nightmare. They all swim together, so what happens with those other kids and how many days are they unable to practice if we do it that way,” he said.

Like other sports, Hillcrest swimmers undergo temperature and health symptom checks as well as wear masks on the bus to and from meets and practice at Gene Fullmer Recreation Center and on deck. They’re socially distanced whenever they aren’t in the water and assigned seats on the bus.

“It’s a very important aspect, the social part with team dinners and banquet, but we’re a close knit bunch and we’re trying to be able

to swim,” he said. “Swimming actually is one of the safest sports since chlorine kills COVID, but we do have some parents who are fearful about their kids getting it.”

Even in the water, they’ve divided the team with boys in three lanes and girls, under new coach Ari Tavo, in the other three lanes, which does help with contract tracing, he said.

Workouts also have been changed by reducing time between sets on the wall, meaning, less chance swimmers are near each other without masks on the wall.

After graduating quite a few swimmers last year, and knowing some swimmers are sitting out because of the pandemic, Thierbach was pleased with the Nov. 5 meet against Hunter High.

“Our first meet went well with some good swims put in,” he said. “On the boys’ side junior Jack Nielson had some outstanding swims with best times in his two individual events and best times in his two relay events. Another junior, Joshua Arevalo, also put in some good swims winning the 200-yard IM (individual medley, consisting of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle) and the 100-yard breaststroke and had a solid breaststroke leg on the winning 200 medley relay. On the girls’ side, Jenna Riddle had an impressive 50-yard freestyle.”

He also noted both newcomers freshman Wallace McCarthy and junior Ananya Iyengar had some impressive swims.

Thierbach expects Arevalo to place in the top eight in state in the 100 breaststroke, hoping he breaks 1:00, and senior Ian Pfeil, in his second season, should be able to swim 50 free around 23 seconds.

Junior Lucus Bolster should be another state qualifier, after just missing state last year in 100 fly. State is scheduled for Feb. 19-20, with region on Feb. 5.

“He’s decent in all strokes, but we’ll likely have him swim 100 fly, 50 free and 200 IM,” he said.

Bolster and Arevalo were part of the school record team last year in the 200 medley, along with Carter Neerings and Kyle Snowder, who both graduated after having successful senior years with school records and at the state meet.

Last year, the boys finished ninth at state, but now the team only consists of 12 members.

The girls also competed at state, but they didn’t place in the top 10.

“The girls team is bigger this year, but they are very young, raw,” he said, noting that that 16-member team also graduated some seniors and will have holes to fill.

In addition to Riddle, who is “swimming great, and should do well as she keeps up with her dedication,” he expects junior Emma West, who “has a lot of potential,” to help Welch,

“an extremely hard worker,” lead the team.

Iyengar, freshman Oakley Young and senior Anna Day are expected to bring strong swims to the team.

Welch’s stroke is fly.

“I love butterfly; it’s a challenging stroke, and I like to challenge myself,” said the 100-flyer, who hopes her 200 medley relay will

qualify for state.

Understanding the pandemic, she’s OK if spectators aren’t allowed to watch poolside as long as the swim season continues this year.

“I’m huge fan of live feed,” she said.

“My family members at home or far away can watch me swim and we can always go back and learn from it to improve.” l

Like Mariah Carey, Christmas seems to bring out the best and the worst in people. You have some folks gathering presents, food, and cash for those down on their luck, and then you have people on video surveillance stuffing jars of sweet pickles down their pants at the grocery store.

Christmas is descending like a firebomb on families this year who have been sick, laid off or evicted. Rubbing Mediterranean Sea salt flakes into that wound, Hallmark Christmas movies are back.

Hallmark Christmas movies should come with an eye-roll rating. Two eye-rolls means a small-town doctor falls in love with a handsome (yet grumpy) big-city lawyer. Three eyerolls means a sick puppy was healed through a Christmas miracle involving an enchanted snow globe, a Nebraska blizzard and Angela Lansbury.

Give me “A Christmas Carol” any day.

With his black-and-white characters and punch-you-in-the-face symbolism, fans of Charles Dickens know his stories are never subtle. But you have to love a Christmas story that starts, “Marley was dead, to begin with.”

The story is about Ebenezer Scrooge and the Christmas Eve where he’s visited by spirits all night. (If I’m going to be visited by three Christmas spirits, they’d better be white wine, tequila, and Champagne. Not egg nog.

chat. Marley is awesome. I mean, who doesn’t want to be followed around by a dead business partner who’s wrapped in the ghostly chains of his unkind existence?

Scrooge “Bah humbugs” his way through that discussion before he jumps into his distinctly creepy four-poster bed.

Soon, the Ghost of Christmas Past floats into the room, with its face shining like LED headlights. It shows the Christmas memories that shaped Scrooge through joy and heartbreak, until his soul bent like a candy cane, starting his transition to the irritable Scrooge he is now. Ebenezer is all, “Cool, cool. Can I go back to bed now?”

Then the Ghost of Christmas Present shows up (looking a lot like Jeff Bridges in “The Big Lebowski”) and shows Scrooge what his acquaintances think of him. Sort of like a Victorian version of Twitter.

Scrooge sees the people who think he’s a greedy, grumpy old man (everyone) and although Mr. Christmas Present Ghost is a jolly guy, he opens his robe to show Scrooge two emaciated children, representing Ignorance and Want. (Trump tried to deport them last Christmas.)

Scrooge is apprehensive as he waits for the final spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Future. This is my favorite part of the story. The somber, black specter appears to Scrooge and makes the hair on my knuckles stand up. I love how the spirit only communicates through pointing, like a passive-aggressive teenager.

Scrooge sees his dead body, his headstone, and the callous lack of sympathy from those around him. He wakes up a new man,

changed into the world’s happiest old geezer, and buys a big turkey that some poor woman must prepare for dinner.

“A Christmas Carol” is a story of transformation that reminds us we’re all here to help each other. With the difficulties we’ve had this year, including Hallmark Christmas movies and Mariah Carey, it’s a good message to remember.

FLOURISH BAKERY MOVES TO MIDVALE AFTER LONG SEARCH FOR NEW HOME

A

unique nonprofit that helps individuals recover from addiction or incarceration has finally found a home.

Flourish Bakery, a social enterprise of Flourish Ventures, had operated out of Salt Lake Community College for two years. In October 2019, SLCC determined that they needed the space for other programs and Flourish suddenly needed to find a new kitchen.

The organization spent 10 months looking for a new location, touring multiple buildings throughout the valley. They found the perfect space at 752 W. Center Street in Midvale. The commercial kitchen, formerly occupied by JK’s Indulgence Catering, has plenty of space, countertops, a walk-in refrigerator and commercial mixers.

“The interns learn culinary and also life skills,” Altizer said. “They learn their personality types and learning styles.

There’s empowerment in that process. People that get in trouble in school have different learning styles. They need hands-on experience or to be shown how to physically do things. You often find those individuals in culinary settings and addiction.
