FIND UTAH TAX HELP AT MIDVALE CITY HALL

I

f you don’t think you need to file a tax return because you don’t make enough, you could be missing out on tax credits that give you a refund, and yes, even if you didn’t have the government withhold anything from your paycheck.

Greg McDonald is the state director for Utah Tax Help.

He organizes volunteer-run sites where anyone can come to get their taxes filed for free. Some other tax programs will advertise free services, but often will charge once it comes to state filing.

Utah Tax Help runs the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. On average, they complete 28,000 returns every year.

McDonald wants to double that number.

“Forever, Utah has been at 75% participation. Last year, we were at 171,000 people, which means there’s 57,000 that didn’t get it,” McDonald said.

Why are there so many missing out on tax returns?

“The IRS tells us we don’t have to. ‘Isn’t that great?

My life is full of stress about money, I don’t have to wait in line to pay somebody to do my taxes,’” McDonald said.

The IRS filing threshold for a single earner is $12,200.

If you are single and head of household the threshold is $18,350. If you’re married filing joint, it’s $24,400. Likely, the households with these numbers are going to miss out on a tax return because the IRS doesn’t require them to file.

Utah Tax Help is open to anyone who earns less than $56,000. This includes retired individuals that are taking Continued page 12

Sound The Alarm What many people may or may not know of the more than 62,000 disasters the Red Cross reponds to every year over 90% are home fires. That is about 1 every 8 minutes. According to local Red Cross spokesperson Rich Woodruff, “Every day home fires are responsible for as many as seven deaths and 36 injuries in this country.

We want that number reduced and so far our Home Fire Campaign is doing just that. We are asking the public to join us to Sound the Alarm here in Utah and help save lives.”

Sound the Alarm is part of the ongoing Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, in which Red Cross volunteers and partners canvass highrisk neighborhoods to install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms and help families create escape plans. This work is made possible thanks to the generosity of donors and power of volunteers. The American Red Cross is calling for volunteers to Sound the Alarm this spring with several events right here in Utah to install hundreds of free smoke alarms while teaching home fire safety.

Since 2014, Red Cross volunteers and members partner organizations have installed over 2 million smoke alarms across American resulting in nearly 700 lives saved. Here is how the public can help.

Local volunteer group has a global impact

uzanne Walker never gave much thought to having her period. That is, until she and her friend Jennifer Woods met the founder of an organization called Days for Girls.

“We learned that many girls are banished to small huts during their cycle or are kept in their rooms sitting on cardboard, old newspaper, leaves, whatever they can find,” said Walker in a Facebook post. “They are not allowed to go to school. Many girls have ‘access’ to products, but only after they give sexual favors to the men controlling the pads.

Our hearts were broken to hear the stories of so many girls and women who die, are injured, or abused because of the practice of being isolated during their cycles.”

Days for Girls provides sanitary hygiene kits to girls in need. The kits are small, portable, and can be used for 3 to 5 years. The bright colors camouflage staining and the absorbent liners resemble washcloths, allowing women to wash and dry them outside without embarrassment. Most importantly, the kits allow women and girls to participate in daily life throughout the month.

“We heard the presentation and Suzanne turned to me and said, ‘Jen, we need to do this,’” Woods said.

Walker began devoting her spare time to creating a Midvale Chapter of Days for Girls.

In just three years, the group has distributed more than 1,000 kits.

“That’s not something I could have done by myself,” Walker said.

Volunteers are essential for each step of the process. From cutting and dying the donated fabric to sewing reusable shields to packing the kit. Each kit takes three to four hours to make, using materials worth around $10. Once the kits are assembled, young adults from a Utah-based organization called Youthlinc distribute them to women and girls around the world. So far, the Midvale Chap-

ter has sent kits to Nepal, Peru, Thailand, Fiji, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Cambodia and Haiti.

But while the impact is felt all around the world, most of the work is done here in Midvale.

On a Saturday morning in February dozens of volunteers were gathered at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel. A display at the front of the room shows new volunteers how the kits are made. Jars full of leaves, corn husks and cotton stuffing represented what girls and women would use if not for the kits. Men and women of all ages were ironing fabric or sewing on machines. One family that frequently volunteers took over an entire table to fold washcloths.

“This is a slow day,” Woods said.

“We’ve had times when every table in the church is being used and we’ve had to overflow into other rooms.”

Local chapters get guidance and some funding from Days for Girls USA. The nonprofit is based in Mount Vernon, Washington and has more than 50,000 volunteers around the world and distribution centers in Ghana, Uganda, Guatemala and Nepal. There are volunteer chapters in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

“Suzanne coordinates everything and did hours of training for the group to become a chapter,” Woods said.

“If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it. That’s Suzanne,” said Carrie Wagner, a volunteer. “She’s a drama mama, she watches other people’s kids, she makes blankets, she’s involved with the Midvale Arts Council.”

That Saturday morning, a volunteer found sequins in a sewing machine that Walker had brought.

“I wasn’t a sewer until I got involved in theater,” Walker said. She recently spent weeks making costumes for her son’s theatre production at Hillcrest High School. Walker organized fewer Days for Girls work days than usual in 2019 due to family obligations, but 2020 is off to a good start.

Upcoming work days will take place Saturday, April 11 and Saturday, June 6 from 9 a.m. to noon at 7825 S. Olympus St. in Midvale. Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome. The group also accepts donations of items including fabric, washcloths and small bars of soap. “It’s all about keeping girls in school, because otherwise they miss so much,” Woods said. “We’re trying to reach every girl.” l

‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ comes to life at the Midvale Performing Arts Center

rittany Hubble and her brother, Trevor Bird, recently found some free time during the evening and were looking for something fun to do. So they tried out for the Midvale Arts Council’s production of “Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

“I acted in high school, then took a 13-year hiatus,” Hubble said. “I was not expecting to be cast.”

Not only was Hubble cast, she landed one of the leads. Hubble plays Hermia, a defiant young woman. Her brother plays Puck, the jester to the King of Fairies.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will run March 6, 7, 9, 12, 13 and 14 at the Midvale Performing Arts Center located at 695 W. Center St. in Midvale. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. with 2:00 p.m. matinees on Saturdays. Tickets are $10 for general admission (Midvale residents receive $1 off) and $8 for seniors and children.

Hubble saw the Midvale Arts Council’s production of “Pirates of Penzance” last summer and admits she didn’t have high expectations. “To be honest, I thought, ‘oh, it’s community theater, so it’s probably not going to be that good,’” Hubble said. “But it was hilarious!”

Ryan Golding plays Demetrius, who is the man Hermia’s father wants her to marry.

“You’ve got this girl who’s in love with a guy and given a chance between marrying another man, or death,” said Candice Jorgensen, the play’s director.

That might not sound like a comedy, but the story has a happy ending. There are also

fairies and a humorous play within a play. But the heart and soul of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is the friendship between Hermia and Helena, played by Anna Roelofs. Helena is madly in love with Demetrius, who is in love with Hermia. After just a few weeks of rehearsals, the two women had cultivated a fun onstage chemistry.

“She’s a role I’ve wanted to play for a while,” Roelofs said. “It’s a dream role for Shakespeare. It’s something I can relate to, a good comedic role.”

At 18 years old, Roelofs is the youngest member of the cast. The first project in her high school drama class was to research “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and perform scenes from it. She also played Queen Isabel in a fulllength production of “Henry V” and Lady Macbeth in a scene from “Macbeth.” Roelofs is now a theatre major at the University of Utah.

“It takes some practice to learn Shakespearean language and digest it,” Roelofs said.

Jorgensen is also no stranger to Shakespeare. Her older sister first introduced her to the iconic playwright as a kid. Jorgensen directed “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)” for the Midvale Arts Council in 2017.

“I grew up in Midvale, and I always come back,” said Jorgensen, who now lives in Millcreek. “My parents live down the street, so I can

leave my kids (ages 3 and 9) with them during rehearsals.”

Shakespeare’s plays can be long. “The original script is three and a half to four hours long,” Jorgensen said. “We’ve cut it to help those unfamiliar with Shakespeare understand it. So people aren’t lost in those colorful sentences.” The production will be around two hours total, with a 10-minute intermission.

Another way Jorgensen has made the play more modern is to have actors style their own costumes with no specific time period in mind.

“It’s another way to make it our own and help people follow the story,” Jorgensen said.

Roelofs will wear a magenta prom dress, while Hubble’s costume for the first scenes is a red power dress.

“At the beginning (Hermia) will be wearing a more stuffy, over-the-top dress that her father would think is appropriate,” Hubble said.

“Once we get into the woods she’ll wear more casual outdoorsy clothes.”

This will actually be Hubble’s third time acting in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” She played Helena in junior high and Hermia in high school. Over the years, one line of Hermia’s has stayed with her: “I am not yet so low but that my nails can reach unto thine eyes.”

“I quote it to my brothers, all taller than me, when they get out of line,” Hubble said. “I love how fierce it is. There’s a lot of spunk. l

You were just in a car accident, now what?

1. Have an emergency kit in your car.

While this step comes before the accident occurs, it’s essential to be prepared. Whatever you kit entails, make sure it has a first-aid kit, flashlight, reflective triangles and a small (and simple) camera in case there’s been damage to your phone. We’re typically frustrated or frazzled after an accident and not inclined to rational thinking. Being prepared limits the possibility of forgetfulness.

2. Take a deep breath. Accidents are traumatic experiences. Taking a breath will shift focus from what just happened to what needs to be done next.

3. Get a status check on everyone in the car. Check with each passenger to see if they are OK. Have someone call 911 immediately if someone is injured or unresponsive.

4. Move to a safe location. Most insurance companies recommend relocating the vehicle to the sidewalk or shoulder of the road as soon as possible after the accident. If the damage to the car is minor, this should be relatively easy. But if there are major injuries or questions about the safety of the car, leave it where it is, even if its blocking traffic.

5. Increase your visibility. Turn on your hazard lights and set out your attention items from the emergency kit—flares, orange cones, reflective triangles, etc. One accident should not lead to another.

6. Stay calm. It is very easy to lose your temper in this situation, it’s human nature. Keeping your cool will keep the situation

While we may want to crawl into a hole, we can’t. There are things to do and we’ve given you 10 to be aware of.

from getting worse. If it wasn’t your fault, it’s easy to want to let your emotions loose on the other driver. This will cloud your judgment and may lead to something that does not help the situation.

You still need to exchange information.

7. Exchange insurance information. This is imperative. If you are to file a claim on your car, you will need the other driver’s information. Most likely, after an accident you are feeling jumpy or stressed. It means when you try to write down their information your handwriting will look like ancient hieroglyphics and, unless you are a cryptographer, will be unable to read it later. We live in the 21st century, take a photo of their information and take photos of the damage done to both cars.

8. Don’t admit guilt. Every insurance company will tell you to do this. Even if you are at fault and it was you to blame.

This could drive your premium up or even lead to you being sued.

Let the police and insurance companies determine this.

9. Call the police. While some minor accidents don’t require a report to be filed, it’s up to the discretion of the drivers in the accident to call the police. Law enforcement can take statements, get information on injuries and property damage. Be sure to ask for a copy of the accident report. If there is a dispute, the officer will be an important testimony.

10. See a doctor. Depending on the injuries suffered or not, it is easy to skip this. A large financial situation has just happened with the car accident, you don’t want another one by seeing the doctor and jacking up your health costs. It’s important to consider it, or possibly speak with one. Adrenaline can be pumping after the accident and one might not notice the amount of whiplash to your neck. Symptoms can take 24 hours to appear. The warning signs include neck pain, stiffness, loss of motion in the neck, headaches, fatigue, dizziness and pain in the shoulders or upper back. It can be better to be safe than sorry.

Where is medical cannabis allowed in Midvale?

I

n November 2018, Utah voters approved the production of medical cannabis in the state. Though every city is required to allow medical cannabis growth and sale, each city is able to put conditions on exactly where this happens in their city.

Alex Murphy, city planner for Midvale, presented the guidelines to the Midvale City Council in February this year.

“Growth and production is allowed in just one zone, the clean industrial zone,” Murphy said.

Production facility requirements in state code, which Midvale City mimics, reads that production is “[n]ot permitted within 1,000 feet of a public or private school, a licensed child-care facility or preschool, a church, a public library, a public playground, or a public park.”

It is also “[n]ot permitted within 600 feet of an area zoned primarily for residential use.”

When a growing or selling company approaches the city, they “... must provide a description of the physical characteristics of the proposed facility, including a site plan, floor plan, architectural elevations, and a security plan.”

A cannabis pharmacy is allowed in several zones, which includes along State Street,

in Bingham Junction and Jordan Bluffs, historic commercial, and mass transit areas as well as a few others.

The distance restrictions are “a little different than the production standards, they are a little smaller,” Murphy said.

Selling is allowed no closer than 200 feet to the same establishments as growing standards.

Difference between medical cannabis and CBD products Jeff Dunn, licensed pharmacist with Farmer & Chemist, a CBD (cannabidiol) pharmacy in Midvale, explained that the general population does not understand the difference between medical cannabis and CBD products.

“There are marijuana plants and there are hemp plants. The main difference is the amount of THC in the plant. CBD comes from the hemp plant (the same plant as the commercially available and edible hemp seeds), it doesn’t have THC in it. Marijuana has THC in it.” “[The state] just awarded pharmacy licenses in December. There’s going to be 14 pharmacies that are going to open up this year specific to medical cannabis, which is very different than CBD,” Dunn said.

“CBD can be nearly as medically effective as cannabis. Eighty to 90% of the medical efficacy of cannabis you can get with

CBD. CBD is without THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive component of medical cannabis,” Dunn said. Without THC, CBD can be nearly as effective without the high of cannabis. l

Tips to help children learn second language skills

idgecrest Elementary parent Andrea Knight knows some basics in Mandarin, but she isn’t fluent, and wants to support her third-grade daughter, Maeli, who is in the school’s dual immersion program.

“I want to learn more how to help her,” Knight said at Canyons School District’s recent dual immersion program parent night.

to the rules, conversation, culture,” she said, adding that most movies watched at home can change the track to the target language.

• Play an online game or listen to the radio or audio book. If an audio book isn’t available, contact a nearby college or university and ask to have a contact of an international student and pay that student to record the book.

“In one community, the dual immersion parents created a summer book reading club so their students could listen to the books, then speak in the targeted language to each other about them,” she said.

• Encourage other dual immersion children to get together for a play date, whether it’s to create crafts related to the language’s culture or holiday, or to converse with each other.

Wade also said often an international college student would welcome being immersed into local culture and may be willing to take part in an activity or having conversations with the children on a regular basis. She also suggested to talk to native-speaking teachers who have their children here and invite their children to take part alongside those who are learning the language.

• Go to local restaurants and stores and have the children interact with servers or grocery store clerks. “I’ve taken my grandchildren who are learning French and will have them order in the language,” Wade said, adding

that she will slip the server the order in English just to assure it’s accurate. “It’s very powerful for the children to be able to communicate and have that opportunity.” She said if parents make it a habit to go to a market weekly and have students ask for regular items the family may buy, such as milk, it will tremendously support the child’s ability in the target language.

• Arrange to have the child exchange emails, telephone calls, FaceTime or other ways to communicate on a weekly basis with those who are fluent in the language. “This will especially be helpful for middle school and high school students as the AP (Advanced Placement) test they take in ninth or 10th grades will have a similar section, so this is a perfect way to support their learning,” Wade said.

Wade also said that when parents set time for the child to practice, reinforce that practice (similar to attending a recital for piano or a game for a sport) and acknowledge their successes, they will be supportive to students learning their target languages.

“Parents are capable of supporting their children learning the language even if they don’t speak it,” she said. “By doing this, it will empower children to feel like they can do more and be successful.” l

Middle school students like the challenge in math program

hile many people may just shake their heads to find what value of x yields a minimum value of the sum (x-20) + (x-21) + (x-22) + (x-23) + (x-210), 83 Canyons School District middle school students tackled that problem at the Jan. 28 District’s annual MATHCOUNTS competition.

Since 1985, local middle school students have participated in the MATHCOUNTS program to promote middle school mathematics. The program is offered in every U.S. state and territory.

At the district competition, students had

four rounds: a 30-question sprint round, a target round with four sets of two problems; a team competition where students work together on 10 questions and an oral countdown round.

The top 14 students, plus their teams, competed on Feb. 8 at the chapter level, which included Jordan School District. Canyons District students regularly advance to state and even, nationals.

While the math enrichment program is optional, District instructional specialist Rachel Marshall encourages participation in

MATHCOUNTS. “A lot of students want extra challenging math,” she said. “It’s problem-solving. It’s not everyday math they do at school.”

Most of the students learn how to identify and solve problems and understand concepts with their peers either before or after school. They prepare for the MATHCOUNTS competitions by studying previous years’ exams.

“We were teaching sixth-graders Pythagorean Theory for fun. We review what they learned and for some, learning new material,” Draper Park Coach Patricia Stirling said, citing work in probability, simplifying radicals, solving equations by substitution series and quadratic formula.

Draper Park parent Jody Rowser supports her sixth-grade daughter, Mary, and her teammates.

“They’re learning something new and they’re having fun. It sounds like an oxymoron that they’re having fun while doing math, but they’re joking, drinking pop and getting to know other people with similar interests,” Rowser said.

At Butler Middle, coach Amy Giles brought 14 students, the most in recent years.

“We invited our honors students, but we also announced if you enjoy math, please come to MATHCOUNTS,” she said. “These are kids who enjoy a higher level of math. My favorite part is when they go head to head to solve problems. Some have the answers before many have even read and processed it.”

While MATHCOUNTS practices may be limited to the school year, Giles said that some of her students participate in summer math camps. However, all her students benefit from mini-tutorials as they write and solve equations from story problems and learn different strategies to solve problems and take tests.

“These students have a knack for math and are here just to learn more,” she said.

“This will prepare them for skills they will need in high school, but right now, they’re just having fun competing as a team.” . l

The ‘Messiah’ returns to Midvale

n Sunday, March 29, Midvale will once again ring with the sounds of Hallelujah.

The Midvale Utah Community Messiah will continue its tradition of performing George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah.”

“The performance will be an hour and a half, and focus on the Easter message,” said Jan Litster, one of this year’s conductors. Litster has been involved with the “Messiah” performance since it began in 1984. The performance originally took place in December, but has been moved to the springtime in recent years. “It gives us a chance to focus on a different repertoire,” Litster said.

The performance has evolved in other ways, starting with an organ accompaniment, then a string quartet. This year’s performance will feature a full orchestra.

“We do more recruiting outside Midvale for the members of the orchestra,” said Sean Raleigh, who is sharing conducting duties with Litster. Musicians audition for the orchestra, but anyone is welcome to sing in the

choir.

Raleigh lives on the border of Midvale and Sandy and is a professor of mathematics at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. He used to play the French horn in the “Messiah” orchestra before being recruited to conduct.

At 10 years old, Lexi Holt is the youngest member of the choir. Her mom, Ashley Holt first sang the “Messiah” as a young adult and has come back, 16 years later.

“People who conducted back then are still singing,” Holt said. “I think that’s pretty cool.”

The oratorio has a long history in Utah as well. “The ‘Messiah’ was performed in Salt Lake City in 1875,” Litster said. “It was the first time it was performed west of the Mississippi River, even before San Francisco.”

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 29 at the Union Middle School auditorium (615 E. 8000 South). Admission is free. l

Draper Park honor students donate books to replace Union’s fire-damaged collection

raper Park eighth-grader Erin Rosemary Akins picked out about 30 books off her own bookshelf as well as at a store to bring in for her National Junior Honor Society’s book drive for Union Middle School.

On Oct. 24, 2019, a fire engulfed several classrooms at Union Middle School. For months, crews worked to clean the smoke and soot damage, however, more than five months later, teachers are still trying to recover items lost in the fire.

Canyons School District Business Manager and Chief Financial Officer Leon Wilcox said insurance would cover many items, but Draper Park Middle School students knew they could help as well.

“As soon as I learned that their classroom library sets had been damaged, I knew I wanted to help,” said Erin Rosemary, who is the student NJHS officer overseeing the new and gently-used book drive to benefit Union Middle School. “I really like reading so it’s important to have access to good books. I like service, giving back to the community.

It makes me feel good about giving back.”

Erin Rosemary brought in favorites such as “Hunger Games,” “Divergent” and “Chronicles of Narnia.” Together, with other NJHS, they packed those in along with other books ranging from “Michael Vey” and

“Fablehaven” to “Sarah, Plain and Tall” and “Johnny Tremain.” There also were donations of dictionaries and thesauruses.

The book drive was held in mid-February and NJHS students counted the books as they packaged them. As of press deadline, the Draper students had already gathered more than 1,200 books for their 1,000-book goal.

The books were expected to be delivered to Union Middle by late February.

“Every year, our NJHS students come up with and select projects they want to do,” said Kylie Arbon, who is the teacher/librarian overseeing the students’ book drive. “The kids are really into this. They’re checking in and wanting to help.”

Sixth-grade Union English language arts teacher Melony Hurlburt is grateful.

“I have about 50 to 60% of what I had before the fire,” she said. “Whatever books they donate to replace our classroom library sets is greatly appreciated.”

The books will first go to replace the damaged classroom sets as the students indicated. After that, Hurlburt said additional books will be shared with other teachers in the school. Once the books are put in the classrooms, she plans on having her Union students write a thank you to their peers at Draper Park Middle.

Hurlburt said it’s important that the sixth-grade team of English/language arts teachers have these sets available for checkout.

“When kids are finished with their assignments, they can just grab a book to read,” she said. “Anytime you can put a book in a kid’s hand is important. We always want to have books available.”. l

If you already file electronically, you are likely getting the tax credit. But if you file by paper and aren’t aware of the Earned Income Tax Credit or child credits, you may be missing out.

“Our clients average $21K in income.

The sweet spot for getting a tax credit is $10-$20K. We’ve seen refunds of $10K because of the earned income tax credit,” McDonald said. However, most of the refunds are in the $2,000 to $3,000 range.

Utah Tax Help can also go back and file or refile up to three years’ worth of refunds.

“A couple came in, stay-at-home mom who became a cafeteria worker. Her husband was a janitor. Low-income family. I said here’s your refund, I look over and the mom is crying. I said we can go back and get you three more years,” McDonald said.

Carlos Higueros has been coming to tax assistance sites since he was 18 and a student at Weber State University.

“The first time I filed taxes, it seemed like something I didn’t want to do,” Higueros said. “I saw a poster about a place you could file taxes for free.”

Higueros went on to graduate with a

degree in health promotion and now works for SelectHealth. He made an appointment at the Midvale City Hall site in February and had his taxes filed within 20 minutes.

Higueros lives in Taylorsville, and Midvale is an easy location for him to stop by after work. He appreciates the convenience and also the peace of mind.

“Honestly, it’s nice to be able to ask questions,” Higueros said. “I’ve filed taxes online before and… That’s my biggest concern, hitting submit and getting an IRS notice in return.”

For Utah residents who do receive a letter from the IRS, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance also takes appointments during a summer tax help session.

“If you get a letter from the IRS, bring it in,” McDonald said.

“I recommend this to a lot of people I know,” Higueros said. “It’s a nice service that’s available to the public.”

Utah Tax Help is available by appointment or walk-in (first come, first served basis) at Midvale City Hall, 7505 Holden Street. The hours are 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays from now until tax day, April 15. The dates are as follows: March 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25, 30; April 1, 6, 8, 13.

Your mail is going to receive multiple postcards this month, beginning right away. The US Census 2020 has up to five mail notifications coming to you. The first two are to be postcards which will provide information so you and all in your household can complete the 2020 Census online.

Remember, the Census counts every individual that lived in your home, apartment or mobile/manufactured home as of April 1st.

Your first online entry will be the unique 10-digit Census ID that appears on the postcard. The identification numbers belong to your address, not the occupants. (If you are unable to locate the identification number, go ahead and complete the census – the Census Bureau will assign the ID number to your data later.)

By accurately completing the questionnaire as soon as possible, it will increase the reliability of the data. If there is no response from an address by the end of April, the Census Bureau will begin preparing to visit each non-response address to perform a face-toface enumeration. All data will be completed by the last week of July 2020 so it can be submitted to and compiled by the Census Bureau before the end of December 2020.

A big “THANK YOU” to all of you for your assistance in completing the 2020 US Census! We will start to see the results in the year 2021. That will be a big year for adjusting election districts.

Free Tax Return Assistance at Midvale City Hall

Families (with children) making less than $54,000 per year Every year, 1 in 4 eligible Utahns fails to claim the earned income tax. The earned income tax credit is a tax benefit for working people with low to moderate incomes that reduces the amount of taxes owed and may provide tax refunds for some qualifying tax filers, Last year, the average credit for a Utah tax filer with children was $2,130. Even if you don’t make enough to have to file a federal tax return, you may still qualify for the earned income tax if you have a qualifying child.

Utah Tax Help offers free tax help to families (with children) who generally make $54,000 or less per year. Certified volunteers are available at Midvale City Hall on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. now through April 15. Sharing relevant information is the cornerstone of improving government transparency and gaining community participation in the decision-making process. Nate Rockwood – New Community Development Director On January 7, 2020, Nate Rockwood was appointed

by Mayor Hale, with the consent of the City Council, to the position of Community Development Director.

Nate attained a graduate degree in public administration from Brigham Young University with a double emphasis in local government management and financial & management analysis. He has eleven years of development and management experience, most recently serving as the Director of Redevelopment and Capital Management for Park City. While at Park City, Nate oversaw a $450 million five-year capital budget, as well as leading the city’s redevelopment agency. Nate also has experience with strategic planning, project implementation, and other key services provided by the Community Development Department.

Midvale City’s New Emergency Planner Julie Harvey Julie is employed by the Unified Fire Authority (UFA) and serves as a shared, municipal contract employee. In her role with Midvale City, Julie will coordinate emergency planning and serve as a liaison to the community.

Julie spent 29 years in the Air Force and Air National Guard. She started in Emergency Management at the State of Alaska in the planning section. She then moved to the Municipality of Anchorage Office of Emergency Management where she was the program manager for outreach and education. In the short time she’s been in the Salt Lake valley she has fallen in love with the beautiful views and the people.

On March 4 at 7:00 p.m., Julie will attend the Midvale Community Council meeting at the Unified Police Department Midvale Precinct (7912 S Main Street) to discuss her role with the City as well as Disaster Preparedness Month and Citizen Emergency Response Teams. The public is invited to attend.

Youth tackle football season is just around the corner! REGISTRATION NOW The Hillcrest District is one of 37 districts in the Ute Youth Football Conference and the Ute Conference is one of the largest youth football conferences in the nation. The Hillcrest District includes all of Midvale City and a portion of Sandy City. Boys and girls ages 7 through 14 (8th grade) are invited to play this amazing team sport!

Registration for the 2020 season is underway! Between now and April 30 you can register your player for $250!! That’s a $50 early registration discount! The regular registration fee is $300. Online registration is encouraged and can be made through the Ute Conference website: www.uteconferencefootball.org. In-person registration dates will be announced for June and July.

Midvale City is very supportive of youth football and provides partial scholarships for those with a financial need. If you’re a Midvale resident and can show proof of financial need, please go to Midvale City Hall and complete the required paperwork to obtain a scholarship voucher. Vouchers are provided on a first-come-first-serve basis. You must register with the Hillcrest Ute Conference immediately to qualify for the partial scholarship.

Uncle Bob’s Butter Country pancake syrups

Saturday pancake breakfasts have been a staple in the Smith household for decades. But the crowning glory has always been dad Bob’s homemade buttermilk syrup.

“One day we were out of buttermilk, but we had an old container of Log Cabin (syrup),” Bob recalled. When the pancakes were served without dad’s buttermilk syrup, his children boycotted the pancakes.

His oldest son asked incredulously, “Do you really expect us to eat this syrup?”

“Right then, I knew the buttermilk syrup was something special,” Bob recalled.

Special might be right.

There have been few innovations in pancake syrups. “It’s been basically maple forever, some artificial syrups and low sugar ones, which nobody likes, and some fruit syrups,” Bob said. So buttermilk syrup — a favorite of home cooks — was ready to sweeten up the market. The Smith family dove in.

After obtaining a cottage food certificate (an approval by the State), things started slowly. In their Cottonwood Heights’ kitchen, the eight Smith children plus parents made 250 bottles of syrup.

It was a tricky business managing three gallon-sized pots, temperamental frothing syrup, and bottling. They sold the final product, Uncle Bob’s Butter Country syrup, at local farmers markets.

It wasn’t until a few years later when Bob’s son Jared returned from his church mission and began attending BYU that things got going. “I knew that if we didn’t make and market this, someone else would,” Jared said, adding that once people taste buttermilk syrup, there’s no going back to artificial maple syrup.

Jared set about experimenting, making hundreds of bottles, and consulting

food scientists, including his brother-inlaw, Cameron Smith, a recent food science graduate at the time.

It took about 18 months to verify that Uncle Bob’s syrup was shelf-stable, because it is made with real buttermilk and cream. Getting the product to market proved to be another challenge. Eventually Harmons took them on and later, Associated Foods. Butter Country is now in 170 stores.

Jared described the syrups as on par with premium maple syrup, but with new flavors, a creamy texture, and no artificial additives. For traditionalists, they have a butter-infused maple flavor. The original buttermilk flavor makes a good base for fruit toppings. New flavors include harvest spice and coconut cream.

Bob said he hopes these syrups bring people back to the simple delights of a pancake breakfast.

“It’s about making memories,” he said.

One autumn day, Rick Black was pureeing his varieties of homegrown chili peppers to freeze, when he had a fiery vision.

“I wondered what the essence of the chilis would be like in a good quality hot fudge,” he recalled. “That is, literally, how the idea came.”

With his favorite Dutch processed cocoa, he experimented extensively until he invented a chili-infused hot fudge sauce that, he said, “amazed” people, including his brother in Texas, who became his first

Black’s goal was to make a premium product with a unique twist. He sought sensations that brought the palate to life — a smoothness and sweetness from chocolate combined with the “essence” of chilis to bring out notes of heat and flavor.

Black, a scientist by profession, got seven tasting groups together in his Sandy neighborhood. He’d test different types of chocolate, cocoas and combinations of chili varieties, then asked participants to fill out questionnaires.

“Even if people didn’t like spicy foods, they all said it’s the best hot fudge they’d ever had,” he said.

After perfecting his “proprietary blend” of seven varieties of chili peppers and finding the best cocoa, he leased a commercial kitchen, and with a humorous poke at our label-conscious culture, named his spicy creation Free Range Fudge.

Popular flavors include original, extra spicy, milk chocolate and peppermint fudge, which Black’s daughters say is “like a warm, spicy, ooey-gooey Junior Mint.”

New flavors for holiday offerings are in the test kitchen now.

Donning chili-patterned pants and wearing an aspirator and goggles while pureeing the chilis, Black makes his fudge in small batches, selling them through his website, www.blackmarkettradingcompany.com and at local stores. His family, including wife Jill, help cook and bottle the fudge. They work quickly, the beneficial result of Black’s production-efficiency studies. Daughter Marli does the photography, while daughter Kalen manages social media.

Soon, he hopes to have his own commercial kitchen in order to work on transitioning from small-batch to large-batch production for distribution to grocery stores.

“This is a passion,” Black said, and one that’s challenging to do while working full-time. But he’s having fun zooming around town in his Honda hybrid with a bold graphic of the Free Range Fudge mascot — a cartoonish chili pepper wearing a cowboy hat. On the rear window is written his favorite quote, “We don’t pen up our peppers.”

“Happy peppers make happy fudge,” he quipped.

Time restraints have honed her designs (think “simply elegant” or “colorfully fun”) and baking work. “Baking has created a whole new sleep schedule for me,” she said. With a 2-year-old, a part-time job, and a small farm she runs with her husband, she works late most nights. “It’s been a learning process of what I can handle and what I can take on,” she said. “I do things in stages.”

She’s hoping to add more classes, including online classes for her out-of-state fan base. One day, she wants to operate SweetAffs full time. Until then, she’ll work late into the night baking and decorating the dozens of cookies and several cakes she makes each week.

“I am grateful that I am in a place to make this a reality,” she said. “I try to be grateful for it and for everything I have.”

Food competitions take the cake

By Jet Burnham | j.burnham@mycityjournals.com Eight teams of students and teachers emerged from the dust of flour and sugar with creations such as panda-faced red velvet cupcakes and apple cinnamon cupcakes with apple cider buttercream and a last-minute caramel drizzle. The latter was named winner of Fort Herriman Middle School’s second annual Cupcake Wars held Jan. 22.

A passion for cooking, the thrill of competition and bragging rights, motivates many teens to enter cooking competitions.

“It lets them be creative in a way that school doesn’t always let kids be creative,” said Madison Heist, teacher and judge at FHMS. All seventh graders learn basic cooking skills. Older students take Foods and Nutrition classes as electives. The most serious high school students take two years of ProStart classes to prepare for food service industry jobs. But—it’s the contests that really take the cake.

Competitive cooking is a popular TV trend that has influenced many foods instructors to incorporate contests into their curriculum—who can create the best smoothie or ice cream sandwich? Others host afterschool competitions for any student who thinks they can craft the best pizza, burger or cupcake.

For more intense competition, the Family Career and Consumers Leaders of America (FCCLA) offers student competitions in Baking and Pastry and Culinary Arts events. ProStart hosts region, state and national competitions requiring teams to create and execute a three-course meal.

Young said competitions provide learning opportunities students can’t get in a classroom.

“In the classroom, they have a limited amount of time and oftentimes a limited amount of resources,” Young said. “Having students compete teaches them to try new things, expand their comfort zone, build confidence, and do hard things that they didn’t think they could do.”

JHS junior Jordan Castaneda likes that competitions allow him to be more creative. For the ProStart competition later this month, his team will make shrimp nigiri, stir fry chicken in a noodle nest, and layered mocha Chantilly cake. They will have just one hour and two gas burners to execute their menu and will be judged on taste, presentation, technique, time management, knife safety, sanitation, food cost, menu planning and business plan.

During competitions, students are expected to problem-solve on the fly. As a FCCLA event judge, Kristy Yeschick watches for how well students respond to problems under pressure.

“In the classroom they have that safety net,” she said. “If they mess up, it’s OK, they can do it again. Whereas in the competition, you’ve got to be at your top game.”

Copper Hills High School foods instructor Megan Maxfield said competitions teach teamwork, problem-solving, time management, and leadership skills.

garlic bread knots had errors, said senior Brooklyn Gutierrez. Measurements and cooking times had to be adjusted through trial and error during several practice runs.

At competition, the team had to adapt to even more complications: Their cookie dough got too cold, the kitchen equipment was unfamiliar, and humid weather affected their recipes.

FHMS teacher Kayla Martin, whose team has won cupcake wars both years, said skills gained through competitions benefit everyone, not just those interested in highly competitive culinary careers.

“Everybody works a fast food job at some point in their life,” she said. “So it’s good practice for working in a kitchen or a high stress job.”

Many students love the thrill of the stressful environment of competition.

“I like the pressure,” JHS senior Mia Conham said. “I think it’s fun and I get really competitive.”

JHS senior Holly Tang said when they are prepared, they can enjoy the competition.

“We always have a ton of fun,” she said. “We’re always laughing and joking with each other.”

Emma Powell, a competitor in FHMS’s Cupcake Wars, said it’s easy to forget about the pressure when doing something you enjoy.

“It has a competitive aspect to it but you also have fun in the moment,” she said. “Then you realize there’s 10 minutes left. There are people you have to beat. So you put more effort than you think you can put into it.”

It’s a life of learning for this wine educator

Not for vacation planning (she wishes), but rather to study Spain’s 17 autonomous wine regions and the dozens of unique appellations. There were thousands of wine facts to know, maps to memorize and soil conditions to understand. For 6 to 8 hours each day, Schowe sat at her desk studying for the Wine Scholar Guilds’ rigorous Spanish Wine Scholar certification program.

“It’s the hardest test I’ve ever taken, and I have a master’s degree,” joked the Sandy resident. But such diligent study is all in a day’s work for Schowe, the first female wine educator in the state who started Utah’s first official wine school, Wasatch Academy of Wine, decades ago.

Wine has always played a central role in Schowe’s life. She grew up near California’s wine country, where wine was appreciated and served with dinner and visits to wineries were regular events. So, when she moved to Utah in the ’70s, she said, “I anticipated a change in the wine culture.”

But, when she found herself at a Provo restaurant and the waiter poured her “wine,” which turned out to be a disguised bottle of Welch’s grape juice, she thought, “What kind of bizarre place am I in?”

Utah, she decided, was ripe for a proper wine school. But that would come a bit later.

Instead, Schowe, who had just received a master’s in education administration, found herself developing Utah’s first community education program serving children and adults with disabilities. Granite School District told her if it was going to succeed, she’d have to fundraise for the participants’ enrollment fees.

“I thought, ‘How incredible, I got a master’s degree just to do bake sales and car washes,’” she said. Then her thoughts turned from tedious cake baking to the joys of wine tasting.

She enlisted Utah chefs to donate food for a tax write-off and then gathered every oenophile (connoisseurs of wines) she knew to make a donation, bring a bottle, and learn about it.

“The [District] was impressed with my fundraising, but I never told them it started with wine,” she said. Enough money was raised to open several programs in the District that addressed the academic needs of adults with cerebral palsy, gave children access to wheelchair basketball, and created programs for developmentally disabled adults to learn independent living skills.

Several years later, in 1991, she started Wasatch Academy of Wine.

For Schowe, the appreciation and study of wine is a gateway to many stimulating experiences in life. Besides new tastes, aromas and textures, an education in wine opens up new worlds — the geology of a grape-growing region, its society, art, history and culinary expressions. “You can become intellectually and experientially connected to the world through wine,” she said.

While academic study is necessary, she values learning through experiences, especially through travel and meeting winemakers.

“Last year I was in Europe for two months. The purpose was to meet with winemakers, to walk through their vineyards, to watch them make wine, to visit cellars, to taste wine with their families and experience their food traditions,” she said.

“I bring those stories home and it greatly enhances the presentation in all my classes... it gives a deeper meaning.”

Meatless doesn’t mean tasteless

You might say meatless burgers are having a moment. Meat-free patties come in two basic categories: those designed to imitate meat and those that embrace their veggie essence. Of the meat imitators, the Impossible Burger (made largely of soy protein) and Beyond Burger (made of pea protein) reign supreme. They’re very similar to real meat in taste, texture and even macronutrient content. Veggie patties are usually made from a blend of vegetables, grains and seeds, and their macronutrient content reflects that. Overall — especially when prepared with all the fixin’s — meatless options aren’t necessarily healthier than their animal-based counterparts. But we’re just talking taste here.

If you venture downtown, plant-based eateries and meatless options are easier to find. But restaurants in the south Salt Lake Valley have some tempting offerings as well. Here’s a roundup of the best meatless burgers.

1. Ice Haüs’s Kein Fleisch Burger (Murray) Ice Haüs, a bar and restaurant, offers one of the more extensive vegan menus you’re likely to find at a place for omnivores.

Their Kein Fleisch (German for “no meat”) burger does not disappoint. Ice Haüs uses Beyond patties, but they certainly put their own spin on the burger, which is topped with vegan kielbasa and cheese, beer-caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, sauerkraut, and spicy mustard. It’s heavy, flavorful and satisfying. If you’re looking for a big, juicy meatless burger you probably won’t notice it’s meatless, this is the one to try.

2. Hires Veggie H (Midvale) Unlike many burger joints that source their meatless patties from outside companies, the patty at the center of Hires Veggie H is house-made. The patty is a blend of carrots, broccoli, onions, green peppers, celery, mushrooms, rice, wheat, rye, oats, barley, seeds and spices that tastes a lot better than it sounds. It’s also topped with a soft bun, cheese and fry sauce. It’s not meant to imitate meat—the veggie patty is its own thing—but it might be as close to the greasy deliciousness of a classic Hires Burger as you can get without involving a cow. Plus, almost any of the burgers on Hires’ menu can be made with a veggie patty instead of beef patty, so there are plenty of options for meat-free eaters.

3. Dog Haus’s Impossible Burger (Sandy) Dog Haus is known for their hot dogs and sausages, but they do have a fair selection of plant-based options. Their Impossible Burger isn’t large, but it does have everything Utahns love in a cheeseburger: pickles, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and fry sauce. The sweet King’s Hawaiian roll that serves a bun completes the sandwich. I dare you to tell the difference between this and a beef burger.

4. Crown Burger’s Garden Hamburger (Sandy) Crown Burger doesn’t make its meatless option easy to spot on a menu. But the Garden Hamburger is, in fact, vegetarian.

There’s not much to it except for a tasty bun, fry sauce, fresh toppings and a Gardenburger patty (made from mushrooms, oats, cheese and spices). And while it’s not meant to fool you into thinking it’s made of meat, it is a pretty delicious sandwich.

5. Fueled Kitchen’s Black Bean Veggie Burger (Draper) Fueled Kitchen offers one of the most popular meat alternatives: a black bean burger. Their black bean burger has a subtle spiciness, accentuated by the tomatillo spread that tops the patty. The whole wheat bun is soft and the sandwich feels substantial, but it lacks the greasiness many crave in a burger.

The Kein Fleisch burger at Ice Haüs is completely vegan, though you wouldn’t guess by the look (or taste) of it. Ice Haüs has an extensive vegan menu.

Roses passed out to Hillcrest students on Valentine’s Day

bout 1,800 students may have stepped into Valentine’s Day weekend with a spring in their step and a smile on their face, thanks to their peers at Hillcrest High School. That’s because the school’s National Honors Society chapter and International Baccalaureate leaders gave each student a rose at the end of the day.

“We wanted to make everybody feel special and loved,” said NHS chapter president and senior Jasmine Parent, who is seen here handing a rose to freshman Samantha Baldwin. IB officer and sophomore Urmika Nandwani said that this was a way to include everyone, which is one of the foundations of their club. IB diploma CAS (creativity activity service) coordinator and NHS adviser Su Veenstra said this was the first year Hillcrest students have given everyone a rose.

Midvale Elementary to celebrate literacy during March

You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.” — Theodor Seuss Geisel School children are familiar with the words of Dr. Seuss and his books may be some of many that are read during a month-long reading challenge at Midvale Elementary.

The challenge will track the number of minutes students in each class reads, Midvale School Community Facilitator Heidi Sanger said.

The school’s kick-off for the reading month will be Read Across America on March 2 when United Way volunteers plan to come to read books together with students and do projects related to the books.

Some of the books may explore a country and the project, craft or writing may tie into its culture, which also could be used for the school’s literacy night on March 31, Sanger said.

At the literacy night event, organizers plan to have display tables for each grade level where teachers can share information and tools on what students should be working on. For example, Sanger said that kindergarten teachers may share sight words that students are learning and can practice at home.

There also will be information about dyad, or pair, reading which allows the adult and child to sit side by side and read aloud together.

Midvale Elementary achievement coach Senja Merrill introduced the reading strategy at last year’s literacy night, saying it helps learn how to read more quickly.

“When you share the book, sitting side by side, track the words and read out loud together,” she said. “The adult reader’s voice may be a little faster and a litter louder than the student’s and may tend to lead the student in reading, but by using a finger to track the text and having eyes focused on the words, the student will join the adult in time and increase their reading pace.”

Another benefit of reading together, Merrill said, is that the adult and student can talk about the text and write down unfamiliar words to look up and learn. The method is proven to help with fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and accuracy, she said.

The school also plans to host a family dinner, feature art and drama displays and give a free book to every child.

“Highlighting the importance of reading and how to support students in learning to read and learning to love reading is really the basic idea behind family literacy night,” Sanger said. “When we share our love of reading with others, we hope to inspire them to love it as well.” l

Hillcrest High student honored at STEM Night with the Stars

H

illcrest High School junior Brooke Lance has something more to cheer about.

The junior, who is a member of her school cheer squad, recently was selected to receive the STEM Excellence Award Jan. 24 at the STEM Night with the Stars.

It was the first time Utah STEM Action Center had a dedicated STEM night with the Salt Lake Stars, the G-league affiliate basketball team for the Utah Jazz, to award students the honor at STEM Night with the Stars.

“It has been great having the Stars team up with Utah STEM Action Center over the past few years,” said Jonathan Rinehart, Salt Lake City Stars president. “Education is an important community outreach pillar of our organization, and STEM Night has allowed us to provide educational opportunities for local youth in the critical areas of science, technology, engineering and math.”

In addition to watching the Salt Lake Stars, Lance and other winners received a Utah Jazz T-shirt and an autographed Stars basketball in front of more than 7,000 fans.

“It was surreal,” Lance said. “I wasn’t expecting it.”

That’s because during her first year at Hillcrest, Lance thought she might check out robotics as she passed by the classroom.

“I walked in the door, but then, I walked right out. I was too scared. I was really shy as a freshman,” she said.

She got up her nerve last year as a sophomore and joined Hillcrest High’s FIRST tech challenge and robotics competition teams.

Hillcrest robotics coach Clief Castleton was glad she did.

“She is an outstanding leader and stepped up big time,” he said. “She is thoughtful, intelligent, creative and well balanced. She got the team to the next level.”

Castleton said that as the robotics’ team project manager coordinator, Lance has organized about 40 students, and has them communicate with one another while setting and achieving goals.

“She really has gone from a really shy student to a leader and oversees all thing mechanical—manufacturing, cutting, drilling, machining, putting it together. She has a positive influence not only to our team, but to others,” he said.

For example, last year in a competition, Lance helped another team put bumpers on their robot.

“She took it home, spent all night working on them. As a rookie in robotics, she embraced the ideals and exemplified it.

When I got an email to nominate a student in STEM, I thought this was a cool opportunity for Brooke as an outstanding leader on our team,” Castleton said.

It also has opened up a possible career option for Lance as she is looking into mechanical or aerospace engineering or psychology after she graduates next year.

Piquing students’ interest is what the Utah STEM Action Center hopes with a STEM Night with the Stars. On the concourse, Utah STEM Action Center’s Marketing and Communications Manager David Wicai said there were virtual reality devices, robotics, solar panel cars, 3-D printers and more for students and their families to explore.

“Our goal is to help students spark their curiosity and interest in STEM,” he said.

“Our nominations were open to honor students who are passionate about STEM, excelled in STEM, had goals and showed great growth in the past year. What we learned is that many use their passion to inspire others in the classroom.”

Hillcrest girls soccer players sign letters of intent

he atrium at Hillcrest High School was filled with onlookers, both family and friends, there to watch two student athletes sign letters of intent to play soccer at a higher level.

The guests of honor were Brooke Grammon and Morgan Miller, both seniors and captains of the Huskies girls soccer team. They’ve had some standout seasons.

Grammon signed her letter of intent with Western Wyoming Community College, while Miller signed with Occidental College in Los Angeles, California.

“I am excited for the warm weather, and I am excited to be going somewhere new. I think it will help me grow a lot more as a person,” Miller said. “I did an overnight with the team at Occidental, and I just fell in love with it.”

Grammon had her own reasons for why she chose to sign with Western Wyoming. “The main motivation for me to go to college is that I get to play soccer. I get to go into college with all these friends that I will get to know from being my teammates.

Plus, its only two and a half hours away from here, so it’s far away enough that I get my independence but close enough that I can still come home if I need to,” Grammon said.

Both athletes played for Hillcrest High School and a club team, 7 Elite Academy.

Both Miller and Grammon expressed hopes for becoming one of the starting 11 as freshmen but understand it will be a lot of hard work and dedication. l

To funeral or not to funeral. What I did when my husband asked me not to hold his funeral.

I’m about to pass a milestone, the second year of my husband’s passing.

We were married for 37 years, created a beautiful family and seemed to be living an enchanted life, being thankful for what we had and working hard to achieve our goals.

While our life together would seem nothing extraordinary to Hollywood, to us we had made magic. Our frugal lifestyle had allowed us to retire early in anticipation of travel, we created healthy and happy children, and had a good home. In spite of our challenges we had made it. Then we got the tragic news and a late cancer diagnosis left us stunned and floundering. Our own private Hollywood fairytale was over, my husband had precious few months left to live.

He would spend the next 2 months giving last pieces of advice to his children, catching up with long lost friends, visiting with family and friends, tinkering around the house taking care of little things that were lingering on his to do list and giving me a plethora of instructions. These included the little things, like who to take the car to when it needed fixing and remembering to leave a check under the mat for the lawn mowing man, to the much larger pieces of financial matters. His mind so

full of making sure I would be okay that these instructions would sometimes come in the middle of night and he’d wake me urgently to make sure I would remember that garbage day is on Thursday.

Then one morning he hit with a big one, he’d been thinking about his funeral service, or lack of, and announced to me that he did not want a memorial service, stating that they were a waste of money.

“Do not have a funeral for me, go traveling somewhere instead and tell our friends to get outside and make a good memory in my honor. Tell them, time is shorter than you think and don’t waste any more of it.”

When a loved one dies, we gather to celebrate their life. When we don’t do that it can leave us feeling empty and possibly a little guilty. If you opt to forgo the traditional funeral here are some things, I found helpful, to honor my husband.

1. Post a tribute on social media: Hit the photo albums and post a photo collage.

2. Have a gravesite friends and family reunion on their birthday or other special occasion. Set up chairs or have a picnic, laugh and share memories.

Carry a Tune About the time the peasants started to revolt, I was done with Cinderella. Yes, I was tired and grumpy (it was Tuesday after all) but the musical had gone on way too long and it just. needed. to. end.

I’ve read the book and watched the Disney cartoon a gajillion times – and I KNOW there are no rioting peasants in Cinderella.

But this musical not only had an uprising, it had a side story about the stepsisters and an idiot king being duped by his advisor. #FacePalm Turning fairy tales and Disney cartoons into live musical extravaganzas has become a thing; a thing that’s trying my (depleted) patience. Broadway writers take a perfectly-fine 90-minute animated movie and transform it into a two-hour (or more) event with NEW SONGS that no one cares about. The audience is just thinking, shouldn’t this be over?

I usually love musicals. I hum songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein productions, I adore Stephen Sondheim’s lyrical wordplay and Lin-Manuel Miranda redefined musical production.

But lately, I’ve found myself irritated with songs that seem unnecessary, boring or just meh. Do cast members have to break into song when someone goes to the barber, or the grocery store, or the high school library?

When a character walks out of the bathroom and violins soar as he sings about his love for toilet paper, I’m ready to throw my Jordan almonds to the floor and storm out of the theater.

Songs should never stop the action. The

lyrics should continue the story without torturing the audience with a nonsensical waste of time. If you can take a song out of a musical and it doesn’t affect the story, it isn’t necessary! In fact, I suggest limiting musicals to two or three really good tunes. You only remember a few songs, anyway.

Love songs are the worst.

We get it. The two main characters have a love/hate relationship. At this point in the musical, we love/hate them, too. I hear a piano chord and my shoulders tense, waiting to hear a song about how love is a disaster. (One hour later, they’ll sing a song about how love is glorious.)

There are big production numbers, infinite costume changes and (inevitably) someone jumps on the coffee table and tap dances while singing about the weather. If I jumped on my coffee table, it would explode into thousands of toothpicks.

There’s also a list of musicals that make you wonder if the idea didn’t come from a two-day drinking bender, followed by a concussion and a small bout of the flu.

Carrie should never have been a musical, in fact, let’s take all Stephen King novels off the list for future productions. King Kong on Broadway?? Where do songs fit into that disaster? And NO ONE has given me any good reason why Mamma Mia hasn’t been banned worldwide. Don’t get me started with Cats. Sports musicals are always iffy because who’s the audience? Sports fans?

Wife: But it’s a musical about the New York Yankees!

So what makes a good musical? Hamilton’s multicultural version of Founding Fathers’ history changed the game with its rap lyrics, imperfect hero and breeches. Wicked has a twisted backstory and amazing vocals.

I’m just sayin’, let’s not make musicals just because the movie/cartoon/book or Geico ad was super popular.

Otherwise, the peasants might revolt and storm out of the theater.
