A Christmas Message from First Presbyterian Church

Christmas Message— St. Paul’s Catholic Church Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today I would like to write to you all about the gift. Not just any gift.

This is the greatest gift that mankind has ever known. This gift was destined to be the rise and downfall of many. This gift was destined to be our one and only hope for salvation.

This gift was born to be the perfect sacrifice that would be pleasing to the Father for the forgiveness of our sins. This gift knew before he was even born that the salvation of mankind depended on his accomplishing this awesome task. In our secular world of today it almost seems like a distant lost story. In today's world we seek to shelter everyone from the truth and instead make a man dressed in red and white with a long beard the focus of Christmas. Well, my brothers and sisters in Christ, the one and only reason for the celebration of Christmas is the gift. When we do an act of kindness in this world. When we love our fellow man or woman.

When we give our lives to a greater good. We are following not only the teachings but the actions of this incredible gift. For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son. My Prayer for each of you this Christmas is to show kindness, love your fellow man, and give your lives to the greater good. We never know when we will be called home to stand before our Savior. His gift to us I pray will be the center of each and everyone of our Christmases. Life is too short. Let us put aside all hatred for whatever reason, let us put aside any prejudice that we may have, let us put aside any thoughts of arrogance, pride, and jealousy. Christ our Savior has come into the world. Let us rejoice and be glad!

The events that are given us in the Bible tell of shepherds keeping watch over their flocks at night, when an Angel comes to them to tell them about a savior that was born in Bethlehem and where they could find Him. The Christmas season is truly a wonderful time of the year.

All of us have memories of celebrating Christmas when we were young.

I have always been intrigued by the innocence of toddlers and young children when it comes to Christmas. It is my observation that most young children are drawn to figurines of the nativity sets, especially the figurine of the

By Marlys Evans When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the world was not the way God had intended it. Into this moral and spiritual darkness Jesus came, bringing life and light to all (John 1:4). Even though the world didn’t recognize Him, “to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

Reverend Martin Niemoller, a German pastor, spent nearly eight month in Nazi concentration camps because he openly opposed Hitler.

On Christmas Eve 1944, Niemoller spoke these words of hope to his fellow prisoners in Dachau: “My dear friends, on this Christmas, let us seek, in the Babe of Bethlehem, the One who came to us in order to bear with us everything that weighs heavily upon us; God himself has built a bridge from himself to us! A dawn from on high has visited us!”

At Christmas we embrace the food news that God, in Christ, has bridged the gap between us. He invades out prison of darkness with His light and lifts the load of sorrow, guilt, or loneliness that weighs us down. The prophet Isaiah prophetically said, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of darkness a light has dawned” (Isaiah 9:2). This light that Isaiah spoke of was not for a few people, but for all. “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son” (John 3:16).

was the most important person this world will know, He was and is the savior, Redeemer, Atonement for our sins, the Lamb of God! The Bible tells us there is no other name given under heaven by which we can be saved! There is no other way to get to the Father but by Jesus. There is no other road we can take but Jesus Christ because He is the Way the Life the Truth and the only way. He is the light of the world and in John 1:5 The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

The Angel told the shepherds where the child could be found, so they went to see for themselves and told everyone they meet about what they had seen.

The world did not believe as a lot of people don't but it was clear that this person was God in the flesh. In John 1:1 the bible tells us In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:2 tells us The same was in the beginning with God. And in John 1:14 it tells us And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us,( and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and Truth.

We are going to celebrate the birth off the most important person we can know Yet the world still wants to stop the light. We have ideas that are not God’s will, but we hold them close and believe them, but they are not Truth but real good lies. God went to the trouble to send a Redeemer to die for our sins but we think that He is not enough that we in ourselves have the power to get to God some other way! We think that we can be good enough when we can’t, and that is truth.

The world rejected Jesus Christ and anyone who followed Him. We live in a time where most people do not see the future that is coming, but the Bible tells us not to be taken as thief in the night.

Most people don't see the patterns the Bible tells us about and probably don't want to see. The spirit of the Antichrist is alive and working in our world.

The birth life death and resurrection of Jesus tells us He will come back and deal with the fallen world a sinful world! In Revelation 3:20 tells us Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him and he with me. The truth that is Jesus is that He requires a personal relationship with His believers. Jesus offers us a relationship we have to let Him in. I hope that you will seek out Jesus and hear His voice and invite Him in. I hope you let the light of the world in to your darkness.

Santa makes early rounds

‘Tis the season for Santa to visit all the good boys and girls. He will know who’s been naughty or nice.

One such Santa, Bill Vanderwood and Mrs. Claus, Jill Vanderwood from Malad Idaho are making their rounds in Salt Lake County this Christmas.

Bill has represented Santa Claus for around 25 years. His wife has been accompanying him for about 10 years.

This year they have attended many community events, including a charity event for Utah Foster Care which was held at the Larry Miller Megaplex Theatre complex in Sandy, Utah.

During the event, the couple took pictures with the staff and volunteers

from Utah Foster Care, and children who came to the event with their families. There was a special request for the Santa couple to pose with local celebrities, Gail Miller and Governor Spenser Cox’s wife, Abby Cox. Gail Miller is the former owner, and remains a share holder of the Utah Jazz, owner of multiple car dealerships along with the many Larry Miller Megaplex Theatres around the State of Utah.

When Santa Bill asked Gail what she wanted for Christmas, she replied, “I have everything I’ve ever needed, and everything I could have possibly dreamed of.”

“Christ child”. Many have observed the “Christ child” being removed and being carried around or the pieces of the nativity arranged differently. When asked why the figurines have been rearranged the child suggests they wanted to put Him in the middle so everyone can see the Christ child.

Little children can teach us much regarding Christmas.

Years ago as Krishele and I were having a family home evening we ask our young daughter what song she wanted to sing. She said “The little Lord Jesus”. Both Krishele and I were not aware of such a song by this title. It wasn’t until later that evening that we realized she wanted to sing “Away in a Manger”. She seemed to understand the true focus of Christmas—the little Lord Jesus.

On that first Christmas night… As Mary and Joseph came to Bethlehem they found no room in the inn for Mary to bring forth her firstborn son. Everywhere around them was full and no one seemed willing to help them They didn’t try to make room. Do we turn Him away because we have no room in our lives. Do we make room in our lives for the Savior? What can we do as families and individuals to make room for Jesus?

Shepherds left their flocks by night and came with haste to seek the Christ Child. The shepherds came seeking the Good Shepherd. Our lives are filled with many good things that keep us busy; keep us from seeking the Good Shepherd. What can we leave behind to seek this Jesus. We have responsibilities and duties, but what can we do to simplify our life and to seek this Jesus?

He will meet us where we are. Come unto Jesus. COUNTY COMMISSION MEETING | 12/11

The Board of County Commissioners met for their regularly scheduled December meeting on Monday, December 11.

Christmas Greeting

Shelly Williams spoke to the commissioners on behalf of the Idaho Enterprise. The county was asked to approve an expenditure for the annual Christmas greeting in the newspaper.

The commission approved the amount of $550 for the Christmas Greeting.

This will run in the Christmas edition.

129,000 truck route application

Todd Hubbard, District 5 engineer for ITD and Molly Beseris spoke to the commission about truck route permitting for 129,000 pounds to the Hess Pumice mines. Hubbard explained that, separately, the states were allowed to put together a freight plan, which provides opportunities for funding. The freight plan is administered through the ITD. There are a certain number of miles which can be designated as freight routes under the plan. A freight advisory committee is responsible for designing the freight plan. The county would then be able to apply for funds through the designation. Across the state, there are multiple levels of weight limits.

The increased weight actually creates less weight per axle than some lower weight limits. Chairman Lewis asked about the timeframe for grants.

Beseris explained that the first phase would be a freight plan evaluation.

Funds would allow for studies to determine viability of the route. Should the county apply for the freight route status, an evaluation should be completed by spring. Dianna Dredge and Lisa Baker of the Road and Bridge department, as well as the commissioners, asked a number of questions about the process moving forward.

The freight route and 129,000 pound limit are separate, so that one could be approved without the other. Dredge expressed a belief that there were no reasons not to pursue either of the programs.

The commission made a motion to pursue the engineering grant through LHTAC for a 26 mile route from Daniels road to Wright’s Creek road.

Commissioner Eliason asked about the road from Holbrook to Malad.

Hubbard stated that ITD was aware of the needs, and in the process of planning repair on the road.

Part-time salaries

Sheriff Arne Jones spoke to the commissioners about increasing the pay for part time deputies and dispatchers. Jones explained that the department required part time employees in order to keep the office staffed. He stated that using part-time and reserve employees would save the county around $30,000 a year, because it does not require full-time employees to fill in at overtime rates.

Chairman Lewis stressed that the department could not go over its allotted budget for part time shifts. Jones stated that the department would not need another increase until 2025. Jones believes that the comp time in the department would be reduced as a result of more part-time hours. Currently $17/hr non-certified, $18/hr certified for deputy rates. The rates will increase dispatch to $17.50/hr and part time deputies to $20/hr. A motion to increase the rates passed.

School Resource Officer

Doug Williams spoke to the commissioners about the need for a law enforcement officer at the schools.

As a result of being short-staffed, there are no available officers to cover the schools as a resource officer.

A grant has been designed to cover shifts at the school for the remainder of the school year. Jenny Hawkes will be the primary officer present in the schools. Vic Pearson pointed out that employees would be accruing time/ PTO/etc within the sheriff’s office, rather than the School District, which might be an issue. The similarities to the arrangement with the sheriff’s office and the boat check station were discussed. Wages paid for school officers by the School District were discussed. The hourly rate would need to cover time and a half costs, as the C Y

employees would often be working over the allotted 40 hours. The hours would be voluntary and separate from the scheduling needs of the sheriff’s office. The commissioners wanted to verify that the $40/hr rate for the officer through the grant would cover all of the county’s obligation for funding the position. Vic Pearson advised that the sheriff’s office needs to consult with the Labor Department to determine exactly what the parameters of the arrangement should be. Chairman Lewis stated that he felt a resource officer was certainly a necessary, but that the situation needed to be clarified first in terms of payroll issues.

Vic Pearson and Lon Colton agreed to speak with the necessary entities before the next meeting to move forward.

Ameriben agreement

The county’s membership agreement with Ameriben was discussed.

Ameriben currently provides a number of services to the county. The Northwest Data Exchange is a digital service where salary information is kept for the sake of comparisons.

Many cities and counties subscribe to the service to provide data for salary setting. Ameriben helps with data collection from the county and uploading to the exchange, as well as running custom reports for the county.

Ameriben also provides Human Resources services to the county. The company supplies hotlines for employees and employers to mitigate risk and provide resources for workplace expectations and issues.

Ameriben also provides feedback and analysis of the level chart for county employees. The commissioners mentioned the importance of the resources provided through Ameriben.

Some further questions about the Step and Grade system were raised.

The Levels were arrived out through Ameriben’s survey of the county’s employees, though some issues have been raised since related to the fact that many employees fill roles within their departments that include a number of job descriptions, rather than a single one.

The commissioners suggested that they would like to maintain the hotline, as well as have several positions re-evaluated on the step and grade chart. The potential to subscribe to the Northwest Data Exchange every other year, rather than every year, was raised.

The commission approved a decision to renew the Northwest Data Exchange and a half year of select membership for a total of $4500 from the contingency fund. The six months would allow for the next contract to line up with the fiscal year.

Senior Citizen Center funding; Dave Colton

Dave Colton spoke to the commissioners about funding for the Senior Citizens center. Colton is requesting funding to help with 350 meals in house per month and over 200 meals delivered. The state has restored some of the funding which was eliminated in 2023. Many of the grants that support the senior center are restricted for use on facilities. Colton advised that the senior center had funds to make it through 2024. Expenses have increased every year, due to increases in food costs and demand. Due to state requirements for what is served, the menu has a floor cost that is unavoidable. The commissioners approved a one time expense of $5,000 to supplement and support the food program at the senior center.

The commissioners approved a motion to cancel the solid waste fee for St John Irrigation Company under the current bill for $427.

Fact and Findings and conclusion of law from Nielsen hearing

The commission discussed the facts and findings from the public hearing over a proposed rezone request submitted by Allen Nielsen. The commission felt that it needed more time to evaluate the final document before they approved it.

Quit claim deed

Lisa Baker spoke to the commission about a quit claim deed with Hess Pumice and Hess Lumber. Hess Pumice donated property to the county, which it is shifting to Hess Lumber.

The land in question is on the borders of current county roads, which will clear the boundary lines between the entities clear. The deeds are necessary for the county to change anything in its system related to the property.

A motion to accept a quit claim deed, giving land to JRD Properties, LLC was approved. A second motion to accept a quit claim deed providing a clean description of the remaining property to the county. The second motion was also approved.

Purchase of excavator

Dianna Dredge spoke about the purchase of an excavator. Dredge stated that the backhoe currently being used for cleaning out culverts is less efficient than an excavator.

Several models, ranging from $54K to $89K were located, which Dredge explained was available in capital funds. According to Dredge, the design and capability of the excavator will be much better suited to the projects the backhoe is currently being used for. Dredge felt that the purchase was a high priority for the department.

She explained that she would like to keep looking at potential vehicles, but that the expense would probably be close to the $90K range. The commission approved using the capital funds for the excavator, once a suitable one is located.

Extension Office budget

Kelly Sorensen spoke to the commission about the budget for the Extension Office. Last year, the extension office was allowed to overspend its demonstration budget in anticipation of funds it would receive later from other counties that shared the cost for multi-agency events, or sponsors. Those reimbursements cannot be put back into the budget. A budget line item for those sorts of cost outlays will be created for next year, however in the meantime the office requested the ability to overspend from its account, recognizing that the funds will be or have been replenished by reimbursement from outside the county. A motion to allow the Extension Office to exceed the travel budget with future reimbursement was passed. A separate motion to al-

low a similar situation to occur with the supply budget was also approved.

SHSP funds for generator

Emergency Preparedness Director Dan Williams reported on the progress of SHSP funds directed toward an emergency generator for the Event Center and radios for the sheriff’s department. A required EHP (Environmental and Historical Preservation) study is underway to determine any environmental issues in the process.

Failure to complete the study, or install the generator in time will void the grant. The generator will need to be installed by April. The generator will be funded out of SHSP funds from several years, the oldest of which need to be spent within that time frame. Availability of some brands within the window available is questionable.

Disaster Preparedness grant

Williams also discussed a grant for disaster mitigation related to replacing culverts. Williams submitted a notice of intent to submit for the grant. He submitted an amount of $300,000 to replace five culverts. The county’s contribution would be 25%, though some in-kind equipment or labor exchanges could be used to reduce the total. The grant would need to be written by January 15.

Beer licenses

Beer licenses for Family Dollar, Garren and Kathleen Atkinson, Thomas Market, CJs, Hotel Malad, Maverik, Dude Ranch, American Legion 65, KC Oil, Chat n Chew, Top Stop, and KJs were approved by the commission.

ESRI Renewal

The GIS program that is used for digital mapping required a renewal.

The yearly cost is $2090. Within the next few years, the program versions will be upgraded, requiring upgrades to the computers used. A motion to sign the renewal agreement was approved.

County vehicle

Kathleen Atkinson discussed the county’s Ford Escape, which has been valued at $13,000 as a trade. Atkinson and the commissioners discussed the best value for the vehicle, which could also be used at another department within the county. Chairman Lewis felt that purchasing a new vehicle and providing the Escape to the Extension Office would be a good idea. A motion to purchase an Edge comparable to the county’s other travel vehicle was made. The Escape will be used for shorter travel engagements in order to preserve its lifetime as long as possible. A second Edge was located from Caribou Ford for $42,700.

A motion to make that purchase from one-time expense was approved.

Caterpillar

Documents approving the lease for a Caterpillar motor grader were signed for $46,242.29 per lease payment.

Lloyd Briggs—dumpster at Crowthers

Lloyd Briggs and Austin Tubbs spoke to the commission representing St John Irrigation Company. The company received a tax bill notice for a dumpster that was placed at the reservoir that they did not place. It was suggested that IDAWY should be responsible for the decision about locating/billing the dumpster. Jason Lower of IDAWY suggested that they could try assessing the need for the dumpster. St John expressed the feeling that the dumpster was not being used by them. IDAWY agreed to remove the dumpster and post signs

Carols by Twilight Experience the magic of the holiday season with traditional Welsh carols sung by twilight. There’s nothing quite as enchanting as the harmonious voices filling the crisp winter air with melodious tunes. The people of Wales are great lovers of music with carol singing becoming an indispensable part of the celebrations.

People sing a lot of Christmas songs with the playing of harp as people sing around homes, Christmas trees and churches. It is during the dawn that the carolers do their rounds after which they wake the family members from sleep and ask them for refreshments.

Calennig Celebration Trick or Treat Welsh Style - This is a Welsh New Year's Day Tradition which began as a Roman custom of giving olive branches on New Year as a symbol of peace and later started to be represented as a symbol of good luck. Calenigg is an apple with three legs or twigs to which you stick almonds with a small spray of evergreen on the top. The Calenigg is handed over to the children who take it to the neighborhood by singing carol songs. They receive pennies or candies in exchange for the luck which the Calenigg bring.

Christmas toffee or Noson Gyflaith (Toffee Evening) was a traditional part of Christmas and New Year festivities in some areas of north Wales during the late 19th century. Families would invite friends to their homes for supper followed by games, mak-

ing toffee (or taffy), and storytelling.

Mari Lwyd Tradition This is one that might seem a little strange if you’re not from Wales. The Mari Lwyd is a figure made from a horse’s skull, which is decorated and paraded through the town as part of a fun and festive challenge between the MariLwyd and the townspeople. One person from the villages is chosen as the Mari Lwyd which is a pre-Christian tradition which is still carried out in Wales. He travels all through Wales wearing white clothes with a skull of horse. It’s a tradition that goes back hundreds of years, and it’s a unique part of Welsh culture that we are excited to share with you.

Wassailing Wassailing is a very ancient custom that is done on New Year’s Eve and Twelfth Night, but some rich people drank Wassail on all the 12 days of Christmas. The word ‘wassail’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon phrase ‘waes hael’. Which means ‘good health’.

Originally, the wassail drink was made of mulled ale, curdled cream, roasted apples, eggs, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and sugar. There are two distinct variations of wassailing. One involves groups of merrymakers going from one house to another, wassail bowl in hand, singing traditional songs and generally spreading fun and good wishes. The other form of wassailing is generally practiced in the countryside, particularly in fruit growing regions, where the trees are blessed.

Robert “Bob” Charles Colton Sept. 13, 1937 - December 18, 2023

Bob was reunited with his family in heaven on December 18, 2023.

Born Sept 13, 1937 to Roscoe and Ethel Colton in Malad Idaho. Bob was a spunky boy and loved getting into adventures with his brothers and friends. Bob met the love of his life Barbara while stationed in Washington state with the Navy. They married April 27, 1957. Together they had many adventures, the greatest was having their daughter Robin. They enjoyed many camping trips with friends, family, and classmates. Bob was known for his humor, his love of guns and the outdoors.

Bob loved the gospel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a wealth of knowledge and strong testimony of his Savior. Bob was blessed with 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his loving wife Barbara, daughter Robin (Chuck), granddaughter Tiffany, grandson CJ (Mandy), granddaughter Samantha, 4 great-grandchildren Kolten, Joanie, Charlie, and Roscoe. Foster

The Malad Community Chorus performed its Christmas concert over the weekend.

Community Chorus sings in the season

For 49 years, the Malad Valley Community Chorus has ushered in the Christmas season with a concert of holiday music. This year’s “Born to Bring Us Joy” concert on Sunday, December 17, 2023, featured the 30 members of the Community Chorus under the direction of Ralph Bennett with Helen Ward as the accompanist.

This year Mr. Bennett selected four new songs and then went back over 10 years for songs that combined familiar carols with lesser known songs. The Community Chorus sang “Welcome! Welcome! ‘Tis the Season” to begin the concert, followed by five songs celebrating the birth of Christ.

The women of the Chorus sang a Spanish-inspired number, “Shepherds’ Lullaby” that emphasized “Silent Night.” Not to be outdone, the men of the Chorus were featured in “Christ Child, Christ Child.”

(Don) Castleton, the Community Chorus sang the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s “Messiah.” Everyone who has ever sung this inspiring number with the Chorus was invited to join the Chorus for this number.

Seven audience members joined the Chorus to sing after Mr. Bennett explained a little of the back story of Handel’s most famous oratorio.

Mark Jones, President of the Community Chorus, presented gift certificates to Ralph Bennett and Helen Ward to thank them for their hard work in preparing the Chorus for the Christmas concert. Mr. Bennett also thanked Maggie Lund, who had practiced with the Chorus to prepare for the concert but then had to turn the accompaniment duties over to Helen Ward when Maggie’s baby came earlier than expected.

The concert continued with four additional songs that were reminiscent of that first Christmas. The concert ended with its traditional “Christmas Love,” the song that has concluded the Community Chorus Christmas Concert for almost 50 years.

Drive-In to close for season on December 30 2023 is quickly coming to an end and as usual the Drive In will be closing for the season. Prior to me purchasing the Drive In 2022, this was a time of the year that I dreaded. To be honest I always assumed this closure was due to Connie and Lynn vacationing. Which may have caused me some short term resentment. Once I purchased the businesses one of my first declarations was that it would stay open year round.

I was naive to the situation. The annual closure has nothing to do with vacations rather it has everything to do with sales. As the temperatures drop in the late fall so does our customer count and by the time December hits the sales no longer cover the wages and food cost, and the carhop tips certainly don't account for the ice on the ground.

So this year our plan is to close on December 30 and reopen when the weather permits just like has been done for nearly the last 70 years.

It has been a pleasure to run the Drive In again this year, I think it has been a great year. Lynn and Connie, Mariah and Holden, made the running of the Drive In look so easy.

It has been everything but for me. I have had some great help with it so far Sherrie Wise, Christina Briggs, and Hannah Dawn were instrumental in getting us through the first two seasons.

We have an excellent group of employees who have worked with us over the last few years. I am very thankful for them. Connie and Lynn keep an eye on us to and help out, which does not go unnoticed. Thank you.

2022 was very tricky for the Drive In and most restaurants and grocery stores. Food prices were changing rapidly and for the most part just increasing. This year 2023, we saw some normalization of the markets.

Beef prices are still high, which is good for the Ranchers of our area and not so good for those of us trying to sell or eat burgers.

Come visit before we close for the season and don't forget we have new gift cards that make excellent Christmas presents.

Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas to Jared Crowther, a Malad Original!

At the heart of every quintessential small town are a sort of people that look beyond themselves to give back to their community. They are the people that step up to serve on the city councils and school boards.

They are the people that volunteer on the local fire department and run with the small town ambulance. They help with the PTO and youth rec leagues.

Their business continuously donate and support various programs, fundraisers, and families or individuals in need. These people choose to do more than simple work for a paycheck and go home at the end of the day, but instead say, “How can I help?”

These sort of folks are the ones that turn an ordinary little town into something a little more extraordinary.

Malad and its surrounding communities are full of good people that lend a helping hand or offer their services in a moment's notice. The list of generous supporters of the small community is lengthy, serving as a base for every good thing that happens around the valley, including the humble Jared Crowther.

While it may appear that Jared lives an easy, comfortable life as Hess Lumber’s current owner, the reality is that Jared has hardly had a day in his life that he hasn’t put in long hours working, selflessly serving to help someone else in need.

As a very young boy, Jared was forced to work to add whatever meager income he could to help his family. Jared’s father passed away when he was only three years old, leaving his family in truly humbling conditions. Never looking on the downside, Lila Crowther chose to teach her family to have a little faith and get to work. Following his mother’s example, young Jared began sweeping floors and the like at Crowther’s Mill at just five years old.

It may have been simple work he was asked to perform, but it was still a dangerous workplace for such a little boy. While working at the mill, Jared suffered a broken leg. The injury was serious enough that Jared required a lengthy hospital stay, lying in bed with his leg in traction for weeks. But as soon as he could, Jared was back on two feet and back to work.

His family laughs as they say, “There were no child labor laws back then,” but that might have been a blessing in disguise since Jared’s mother and his siblings depended on him to bring home whatever he could. As he grew older, Jared worked at Rex Evan’s grocery store stocking shelves. He got teased some for spending his after school hours working instead of playing on the local sports teams but that sort of recreation was a luxury he and his family couldn’t afford.

There was one small luxury he did allow himself, that of taking the long way home after work so that he could drive passed the home of one Ronda Hess. Ronda recalls, “My dad said, ‘That boy would save a lot of gas if he would just drive straight home.’”

What began as just a passing drive and a wave eventually turned into a first date in the fall of 1973, which ultimately led to their marriage shortly after returning from his mission in 1979.

At the time of their marriage, Jared was working at what was Thiokol.

After just a few short weeks, Ronda’s father offered Jared a position working at the lumber store, telling him that if he came and learned the ropes, he could maybe take over one day.

Jared jumped at the opportunity and quickly fell in love with his work.

To some, working at the lumber store might have been something he did out of obligation but when it came down to it, it was because “he loved the

work and loved helping people,” as his family would say. Ronda shared, “He would have a way to see a more efficient way at doing things and would change things for the better.”

Despite not having any college experience or business degree, his keen mind and awareness led him to be a natural businessman. Over the years he helped develop a hardware store that would meet the needs for customers, businesses and operations for miles around, as well as support the community in a way they could never repay. Of course, the path to get there was nothing but challenging, demanding sacrifices of both Jared and his family.

Recognizing that there would be opportunities to expand, Jared put everything he had back into the business. To help make ends meet, he would build pallets in his own driveway and spent time working as a windshield repairman. In order to better help his customers, Jared studied and learned everything he could about construction, plumbing, and so much more. His children recall falling asleep at the lumber store on the late nights that he would stay to catch up on orders or paperwork. For over 40 years he has made weekly trips to Salt Lake, traveling to suppliers and vendors to pick up whatever it is his customers need, so that they don’t have to wait or have any added fees for UPS delivery.

This sort of work ethic and sacrifice might seem over the top, but that just

is who Jared is- a man fiercely loyal to his customers and more concerned with helping someone else than he is about his own needs. Having his own list to do each day, he could have easily hidden away in his office to get his tasks done, but instead he takes time to work through the challenges his customers have, often designing out plans himself.

Son Doug Crowther shared, “He has built hundreds of homes from behind his desk. He teaches people what they need to know and helps them feel confident so that they can do the job. People might think he does it so they will buy supplies at his store, but the truth is he would do it all for them if they never bought a thing. He just wants other people to succeed.”

All the while he built up the family business, supported his customers with impeccable service, and raised his family, he also worked to serve his community. Over the decades, Jared has volunteered countless hours as he served on the City Council, Chamber of Commerce and his many church callings. But through it all, he had one focus- loyally serving others.

From the outside, it could be easy to assume that Jared and his family live well with such a successful business. But those that know him best know that while his business may be successful, his true joy comes from serving others, not the dollars made at the end of the day.

In January 2024, Hess Lumber will celebrate its 89th year of business serving Malad. Jared, notably, has been along for the ride and steering the company for more than half of those years. While he has never been one to stand in the limelight, that sort of work and dedication deserves celebrating, not only for himself or for his business, but for the community as well. And what better time than Jared’s own birthday, December 25.

Three cheers to the man that has selflessly given to and tirelessly served a community, simply so that he can look them in the face and know he gave them his best. Thank you and Happy Birthday, Jared Crowther!

Festival of Trees returns to Event Center

The Festival of Trees returned to the Event Center for the second year in a row, raising funds for the local schools and giving merchants and visitors alike another option for Christmas gifts.

Trees, wreaths, and centerpieces were sponsored by a number of local individuals and organizations for silent auction. International Cultural Exchange Services, Mandi Hess, Julie Colten, Nell J Redfield Memorial Hospital, Wood Flowers by Stephanie Jones, Charlene Chambries, Kirk Smith, Northern Title Company, Edith’s Collective, Mark John Farms, and others all donated items for auction.

Mandi Hess, who organized the festival this year, explains, “The Festival of Trees is a fun event to raise funds for our community. The last two years we have designated the raised funds to our schools’ music departments. Last year we donated to the Middle/High school, and this year we will be sharing the funds with the Elementary.

We love being able to provide an event that allows local and non local small business owners to get their name out there. By being able to promote their business through the goods they sell and connecting with people.

As the Malad Area Chamber of Commerce continues with the Festival of the Trees starting in 2024 we are looking forward for other organizations and businesses to help out in our local community.

This year’s Dragonette Christmas Show was a chance for dancers young and old to show off their skills to a packed gym, full of parents, fellow students, and the public. The Dragonettes were joined by MHS Cheer and Studio A Dance for a program featuring a range of dance styles, and ending with a candy toss.

Lines were long for the program, which brought a full crowd into the MHS gym for a fun and athletic night of performances.

The program began with the MHS Dragonettes performing “Get Big,” a hip-hop number.

Robert Wayne Hess

November 5, 1928 - December 17, 2023 Robert Wayne Hess passed away on December 17, 2023, at the age of 95. He went peacefully in his home with his daughter by his side. Robert was born on November 5, 1928, to Floyd Robert Hess and Nellie Isadore Thomas Hess in Colfax, Washington.

Robert served in the US Army as a medic in the Panama Canal. He also served on many boards in the community through the years. Bob was a hard worker and worked on the family farm as a youngster. He later purchased and farmed the A-Heart Ranch.

Dad was a bachelor until 39 years old, when he found the love of his life, Lois Gambles Kent, and they were married on February 16, 1967.

Lois had 5 children from her first husband who had passed.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Lois, and son Dee Kent, His parents, and sisters Martisha ‘SIS' Hess and Kay Dennis. He is survived by brothers Sherman (Janice) Hess

- LaPine Oregon, and Dan (Carrie) Hess - Malad, His daughters Amy Nell (Mark) Thomas - Malad, Molly Sue (Tony) Whitman - North Platte, Nebraska, Cindy Kent (Jim) Gleason - American Fork, UT, Kena Kent (Terry) Mair - Midway, UT, His sons Kelly (Connie) Kent - Lehi, Utah, and Kurtis (Misty) Kent - Salem, OR. Bob had 26 grandchildren and 69 great-grandchildren, with another one on the way.

Per Dad's letter to the family, He states, “No public viewing or funeral services." In the spring we will have a celebration of life.

Lady Dragons continue to dominate In their first week of district games, the Lady Dragons left no one questioning who dominated the court each night. Extending their winning streak to 10-0, the Lady Dragons took down conference opponents from Aberdeen and West Side, beating both teams by a healthy margin. Nearing the halfway mark of their season, Malad is determined to only improve their game as they go from one game to the next.

First hosting the Aberdeen Tigers in Malad on Wednesday, December 13, the Lady Dragons immediately jumped to an early lead in their first conference game of the season. At the end of the first quarter, Malad found themselves up 22-0 due to their tough defense and fast paced offense.

Aberdeen attempted to slow down Malad’s game, but the Lady Dragon’s only used their play as an opportunity to focus their game on solid execution.

The Tigers were unable to shut down senior forward Hallie Horsley who “outscored the opposing team by herself with a near double-double of 18 points and nine rebounds,” as reported by the Idaho State Journal.

Brynlee Jones added another 13 points in the game, hitting 5 for 8 of her field goal attempts and going 100% from the free throw line. To add to their offense, Malad had a season high of 16 assists, led by Oaklie Hebdon with 7. The Lady Dragons tallied up 45 rebounds as a team, more than dou-

The Last Dragon varsity came out in Christmas sweaters for their last home game before the Christmas break as they went up against the Aberdeen Tigers, winning the game 64-17.

On the defensive end, the Lady Dragons had 9 steals and 7 blocks. Extending their lead throughout the game, the Lady Dragons end the game up, 64-17.

Friday, December 15, the Malad girl’s basketball team traveled to district rivals, West Side where they not only swept the night, but each team ran

up a considerable lead to run the clock in the 4th quarter of each game.

The varsity team had found a unique challenge in the Pirate’s line as they went up against 6’6” forward Holly Kropf. Kropf had a simple plan for the game, post up big under the basket in hopes that her teammates could lob the ball up to her for an easy lay-in.

To counter West Side’s plan, the Lady Dragons played a tough defense on the guards to deny entry into the post. If ever the ball managed to make it into Kropf’s hands, the Malad posts and

weak side wings played big, hands off, straight up defense to put the pressure on the shot. Working together, the Lady Dragons held Kropf to only 6 points.

To open the game, Malad set up in their full court press that led to a series of steal and quick shots. The team posted an impressive 16 steals over the night, with 3 each from Horsley, Haycock and Kiley Miller. Hebdon led the team on offense, putting up 17 of the team's 52 points.

Haycock came in from the weak side to grab 9 rebounds to lead the Lady Dragons with Nelson, Horsley, Jones, Hebdon and Scarlett Hawkes each adding 4.

After their first week of conference games, Head Coach Trevor Jones shared, “Every game is important to us.

There is always something we can learn from and improve on. We are very proud of how hard our girls worked this week as they went up against teams that play at a different pace of basketball. With two more wins behind us we are focusing on what’s next- Ririe and North Fremont. We have beat both of these teams at home but we know we have to push hard to win on their court.”

The Lady Dragons will play back to back games on the road, first going up against the Ririe Bulldogs on Wednesday, December 20 and then the North Fremont Huskies the following night.

Busy season for MHS Wrestling It was another big week for the Malad Dragon wrestling team, representing the Malad High School on their mats with a week of both dual and tournament matches. The Dragons continued to have success in front of their hometown fans as they held their annual Cal Willie Dual Night as well as their annual MHS Dragon Wrestling Tournament.

The wrestlers began their matches on Tuesday, December 12 as they hosted teams from Oakley, Raft River and Valley. After a hardfought night, the Dragons came out on top, winning all three duals to put their season dual record at 16-0.

Tuesday’s duals were more than an ordinary night of wrestling for the MHS wrestlers as they honored a member of the Dragon wrestling family that passed away far too soon. Cal Willie, son of Tom and Amber Willie and older brother to wrestlers Jack and Sam Willie, loved being a Dragon wrestler and exemplified what it meant to have Dragon pride.

After graduating from Malad in 2016, Cal served a full time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he had the unique opportunity to help coach wrestling. Each day he helped young athletes put their best efforts on the mat, teaching them they were worth the hard work and sacrifices they were making, a lesson he learned well as a youth in Malad.

The MHS team began the night suiting up in their memorial uniforms, a singlet with a heart and initials CW on the leg, as well as reading Matt Wray’s original poem titled “A Real Cowboy.”

The Dragons also honored the memory of Cal by doing service projects as a team throughout the community during the week. The Lady Dragon wrestlers spent time with the residents of the long

term care facility reading and playing games while the Dragon wrestlers spent an evening after practice deep cleaning and removing snow at the Oneida Crisis Center. The team shared, “Cal was a great example of giving back and we want to honor that memory as a team.”

Over the weekend, the Dragons hosted their annual two day tournament inviting teams from Idaho and Utah. Dominating on their home mats, the MHS wrestlers won the 1st place trophy as a team from the efforts of 5 champions and 20 total medalists. The top four team scores of the tournament were: Malad 231.5, West Side 157, North Fremont 147 and Preston 130.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Coach Morrison shared, “Our wrestlers are looking really good. Our JV wrestlers competed in the varsity tournament against varsity teams and all did really well. They are learning and getting better each week. Our varsity team has some great wrestlers and leaders who are helping push our team to the next level.”

The individual medalists include in 1st place 113lbs Jace Potter, 126lbs Sam Willie, 138lbs Drake Morrison, 145lbs Oakley Maddox, 170lbs Hunter

Wray, and 195lbs Blaiz Wright.

In second place was 98lbs Jack Willie, 170lbs Trevor Allen, 195lbs Mason Brees, and 220lbs Caleb Mathews.

The 3rd place medalists were 113lbs Porter Mills, 120lbs Kimball Carter, 132lbs Alex Marshall, 145lbs Roper Higley, and 152lbs Gabe Hooste.

4th place medalists included 106lbs Ayden Potter, 120lbs Parker Price, 126lbs Jaxsen Purdum, 132lbs Zane Komrofske, and 182lbs Lex Driskel.

freshman Drake Morrison was voted as the Tournament Outstanding Wrestler.

Morrison shared, “The whole team is doing really well and it is great we can work together and push each other to be better. I’m grateful for the team and coaches and think we will do great things as a team this season.”

Dragons split games on the road The Malad Dragon varsity basketball team split their games this last week as they hit the road to play non conference opponents American Falls and North Gem. The two teams gave the Dragons a variety of different opportunities on the court, testing them in aspects of the game and giving them other moments that they truly excelled.

The American Falls Beavers hosted the Dragons on Tuesday, December 12 for their evening matchup.

ing a move to basket for the lay-in, time and time again. On the outside, the guards did well to hit the open shots but also penetrate and drive the defense to create other offensive opportunities.

The Dragons settled into a strong defense, protecting the hoop as the Beavers continued to attack.

Malad’s defense kept them in the game until the final quarter when American Falls took advantage of some defensive mistakes to pull ahead and seal the win, 37-45.

Coach Kade Price commented on the weekend, saying, ““The girls did awesome! We are so proud of them as coaches. They've come a long way from the first of the year. We are excited to see where it goes from here. Great job ladies!”

It was good to get a W at North Gem on Thursday. We had five players score in double figures and that was exciting.

The Dragons will have two games at home before the Holiday break, hosting the Ririe Bulldogs on Tuesday, December 19 and then the Firth Cougars on Wednesday. Having played both of those teams, they have been able to better study and prepare for their games and feel confident going into the week’s play.
