PSYCHIC TRAVIS HILL SAYS FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE ASPECTS OF OCTOBER

T

he fright-filled holiday of Halloween is on its way, but for many the last seven months of 2020 have been scary enough. Psychic Travis Hill believes that people should focus on the positive aspects of October, particularly this year.

“My heart goes more toward the current circumstances at this time, especially with the pandemic,” he said.

According to Hill, this is a period of extremes. “The whole planet right now is actually going through a clearing process, or spirit calls it the ‘emotional purge.’”

He believes we have a bit of a journey ahead of us as we work toward a full recovery and adapt to shifts occurring on our planet. “On the positive side, we are seeing a lot of businesses, people, and organizations coming together more than ever to support humankind and positive outcomes. I believe that love, selflessness and compassion are just as visible right now as all the bad,” Hill said.

The best thing we can do is to let go of any negative emotion such as judgment or hate “to be able to properly release that because then we can actually be there more for people that need us,” he said.

Hill, who used to be a paranormal investigator, often did this during Halloween. No longer. He believes that it was sometimes a negative experience because the spirits he discovered were not always in a good place. He felt like he brought some of the negative energy home, so he ceased.

Hill says that he began to see spirits following a near-death experience when he was 9 years old. He fell out of a tree and hit his head on a rock. He then remembers floating above his body.

“I was seeing two lights in the sky. One was the sun. Opposite in the sky, I was seeing more of a white light. I wasn’t going inside of it. It was just something I observed,” he said.

This experience led Hill into becoming a psychic medium. He had an office and practiced in Holladay for six years. Since the pandemic, he now works from home and reports that business has been quite good.

Clients from Holladay tend to come to Hill for advice relating to their current circumstances and path in life. They also come to get in touch with loved ones who have departed. “There are typically wounds, guilt or regret associated with the departed loved one,” he said.

One of the most common questions Hill gets asked by his clients is, “How can I get in touch with my higher self?” He believes that the best way to do this is to sit down in mindful meditation because “we get to be really sitting with our emotions.”

Hill warns that people often think that their higher self is somehow a different being from themselves. This is not so, he says.

“And you will always know you are in connection with your higher self when there are those moments when there’s a huge amount of peace coming through or a major download of information or inspiration or motivation.” He also believes that you are living within your higher self when “you just get tears of gratitude.”

Rezone amendment seeks to return neighborhood to low-density designation

H

olladay City officials have considered innumerable rezone applications over the years, ranging from mid-sized developments, like the forthcoming Weyburn Retreat on Spring Lane, to small-parcel homeowners looking to add a single additional unit. In almost all cases applicants seek to increase housing, yet councilmembers approve such rezones sparingly, wary of drawing ire in a community with reverence for its rural history and where the word “density” can feel like an expletive.

Now the city finds itself weighing the merits of a unique “downzone” application that would preclude certain levels of density on an eight-acre area in the heart of Holladay.

“We are a stable neighborhood under threat of development. We do not want to change the character of our neighborhood.

The current district is contrary to the landuse ordinance to protect established neighborhoods,” said Holly Richards, a resident representing a group of 14 petition applicants at a public hearing in September. “Right now the door to potential higher density is open just a crack.”

The petitioners want to slam that door shut.

The city is calling it the “Richards amendment,” which aims to modify an 8.3acre area in the vicinity of Kentucky Avenue

and Clearview, between the So-Ho food truck area and the Holladay Village, by shrinking the boundaries of the Medium Density Residential Stable district (MDR-S) in which it’s currently located, and which allows up to 16 units per acre. The area consists of 23 parcels of mostly single-family homes, and if the application is approved, the lots will be redesignated a Low Density Residential-Stable (LDR-S), similar to the status it held prior the city’s revamped 2016 General Plan, placing the cap at five units per acre.

Petitioners argue that the MDR-S district does not make sense for the area because it contradicts existing land-use patterns and conflicts with the “stable neighborhoods” provision of the general plan. They also argue the area is ill-suited for higher density because it’s removed from major traffic arterials, one of the guiding conditions for multi-family development zoning.

City staff, albeit, do not view the rezone favorably. The city’s official staff report argues that the rezone will place undue limitations on its ability to offer a “transitional option” around the Holladay Village zone.

“Removing the flexibility of options pertaining to future development decision making or responding to growth pressure (if any), is not an envisioning plan” intended by the General Plan, the staff report said.

The staff believes that the MDR-S district abutting the Holladay Village accommodates potential future growth without jeopardizing the patterns that make the area unique and desirable.

They worry such moves may hamstring the city’s ability to meet the needs of SB 34, a state law that requires cities to expand their housing portfolios.

Holladay family says online learning was right choice for their children

A

s a former math teacher, parent Tammy Miller knows there’s no substitute for a classroom experience. And yet, when July rolled around and COVID numbers were still high, Miller and her husband didn’t feel comfortable sending their kids back to in-person school.

“My son is a seventh-grader at Churchill and my daughter is in fourth grade at Oakridge. My husband and I listened to the advice of health experts and watched everything that happened since March. We decided that we’d rather not be part of an experiment, so we kept our kids home,” Miller said.

Miller didn’t take the decision lightly, nor did she force it on her children. “As parents we were leaning that way, but we sat down as a family and talked about it. The kids felt good about it. They found out that a lot of their friends had also chosen online school, so they didn’t feel alone.”

Will kids learning from home lose out on essential socializing? “Yes, that’s a concern. And it’s different now. But this won’t be forever. Our kids’ teachers are really amazing. They are good at providing ways for our kids to be part of the class,” Miller said.

Miller’s education skills are a bonus that not every home has. “I am an educator. That’s who I am. So I can help my kids. But I’m try-

ing not to overstep that role. I’m here if they need help, but one reason I knew we could do this is that I knew my kids would get their work done,” Miller said.

Having the ability to choose between online and in-person learning is a luxury, and not one everyone can afford. Churchill principal Trent Hendricks reported that about 30% of his students are online.

“I’m not saying this is the choice everyone should or can make, but for our family it was right. And so far it’s going well. Maybe we’ll feel differently in a few more weeks.

But for now we feel that Churchill and Oakridge are doing an amazing job,” Miller said.

Miller gave rave reviews for all her kids’ teachers, and said they’re going the extra mile. She feels her kids are learning, completing work and getting involved in class.

“My son has the most interaction with his core subject teachers. His math and English teachers make a video every day. His English teacher involves him in discussions in a hybrid way. He has Zoom meetings with his band teacher—she does videos. Somehow she’s pulling it off.”

Carrie Wetzel is Miller’s daughter’s teacher at Oakridge, and Miller praised her as well. Wetzel is teaching a hybrid class, and

Miller said there are 14 kids in the classroom with her and 10 online. She says this arrangement helps her daughter, who is smart, but also quiet. “I think in a typical classroom she might not speak up, and who knows, with a mask on, it would have been easy for her to not say anything during an in-person class.”

In Wetzel’s class, Miller said she feels like her daughter is “in class” most of the time. “Her schedule is set up so she’s doing all the work and assignments and there are

quick responses to our questions. But I wonder how long the teachers can sustain this.”

Miller’s family chose online instruction to “err on the side of caution. It also helps decrease class size, which helps the kids and teachers who are there. I’m hoping it will be sooner rather than later that they can go back to school. But the unknown factor bothered me a lot—the anxiety of just making the choice was hard. So we made a plan. The less unknown, the better,” Miller said. l

MAYOR’S MESSAGE I switched on the TV to an ad intending to sully the record and reputation of Congressman Ben McAdams. A commercial soon followed running equally negative messaging directed at his opponent, Burgess Owens. I expect the negative tenor and frequency of political advertising to increase exponentially through November 3rd. It has caused a dramatic reduction in my TV consumption, an unintended benefit of this election. We all complain about these tactics, scratch our heads at the mudslinging, and yet it continues. In fact, each year the angry vitriol seems to ramp up. There can be but one answer; it must work! Appealing to our worst fears apparently persuades our vote more than a message of vision and hope- go figure!

I raise this issue from a place of frustration and confusion. It seems in complete contrast to what I witness out in the community each and every day. The most

recent example occurred at the citywide cleanup on Saturday, September 12th. Our staff quickly organized the event to assist with debris collection following the windstorm. Hundreds of loads were delivered. We had some wonderful conversations over the course of the day with our Holladay residents. What really stuck me is how many of these individuals were hauling debris for their neighbors. There were so many individuals voluntarily pitching in, taking time on a Saturday to help those most in need. One of my pine trees came down, blocking the road. Two neighbors showed up with chain saws and a few hours later the road was once again navigable. There are hundreds of stories just like this one, not just in Holladay, but all along the Wasatch Front. So, after COVID, an earthquake, civil unrest and a massive windstorm, neighbor voluntarily helping neighbor was once again the theme of the day.

I’m no psychologist, I do not understand how we can be so persuaded by hate and fear, yet act out of

As long as we continue to acknowledge, through our actions, the divine in each and every human being, we have reason to be hopeful.

During these difficult times, we should all take comfort knowing that Holladay has not waivered in this regard.

So, as the ads ramp up, if you can’t dodge the hefty portion of negative messaging coming your way, remember that it’s what we do that counts. Its how we continue to serve one another that reveals our true character, which establishes who we are as a community.

The goal of Fire Prevention Month is to raise fire safety awareness and help ensure your family has a plan ready.

The campaign for October is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.” This is very timely as many continue to avoid restaurants and cook more at home. Here are some facts and tips to keep safe during cooking.

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries.

Thanksgiving is the leading day for fires involving cooking equipment.

The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking.

Stay in the kitchen and check food regularly.

Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Leave the pan covered until it’s cool.

Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop.

Loose clothing can hang down onto stove burners and catch fire.

Wear short, close-fitting, or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking.

Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

Additionally, here are some interesting facts about fire safety: • 3 of every 5 home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no working smoke alarms • Less than 50% of homeowners have an escape plan • Carbon monoxide (CO) is the #1 cause of accidental death • 60% of consumers do not test their smoke and CO alarms monthly • Only 47% of people report having CO alarms in their home • Just 43% of homeowners have an escape plan • Thanks and stay safe, Holladay!

To maintain worker health and safety, during the continued COVID-19 pandemic, WFWRD will utilize additional equipment to assist with leaf bag disposal from residents. Loss of riparian plants degrades wildlife habitat and accelerates bank erosion when there are no longer plant roots helping to stabilize the banks.

Serious problems also arise when debris gets into the stream.

Grass clippings, tree branches, construction materials, etc. blocks culvert openings and gets hung up on bridges. This can cause flooding and property damage for you and/or your downstream neighbors. In addition, excess amounts of organic matter (grass, leaves, etc.) depletes dissolved oxygen in water because organic matter uses oxygen as it decomposes. This can have serious impacts on fish, insects and other aquatic life that need oxygen to survive.

Generosity and kindness thrive during tough times

mall glimmers of kindness illuminate dark times.

Around the United States, zoos offer free viewing from their animal cams, celebrities read children’s stories for a cause, and children’s book authors offer drawing lessons for house-bound families.

Closer to home, generosity gets personal.

With locations in Sugar House, South Jordan and Taylorsville, Schmidt’s Pastry Cottage began offering free loaves of bread after Gov. Gary Herbert quarantined the state. Since then they have baked and donated 90,000 loaves.

Owner Steve Borg said, “It’s been a lot of work but it’s opened up our hearts. We’ve had a lot of generous people volunteer, donate here and there. We have a flour company donate some flour and so it keeps going.”

All school districts and charters in Utah have been given permission by the USDA Family and Nutrition Service to waive lunch fees for all students, whether they qualify for reduced or free lunch normally.

“This is welcome news for the communities we serve,” Canyons School District’s Nutrition Services Director Sebasthian Varas said. “We have families who may not qualify for free or reduced-price lunch but have been financially hurt by the pandemic. This will hopefully bring them some peace of mind and take at least one worry off their shoulders.”

A West Jordan employee donated $15,000 from his own salary back into the city budget to support other employees who have offered exceptional service during the pandemic.

“I feel strongly that we need to make sure we are telling our employees thank you for these kinds of actions and reinforcing their kindness and extra efforts. To that end, I asked the Mayor to transfer $15,000 to the employee recognition line

item [in the 2020-2021 city budget],” said Korban Lee, West Jordan chief administrative officer (CAO).

Such examples of kindness included a West Jordan police officer who organized and purchased a small birthday celebration with his own money for a young girl involved in a recent crime.

“After a recent horrific tragedy...the mother mentioned in passing that a 7-year-old in the family was having a birthday in a couple of days. Our patrol officer quietly took note. This officer teamed up with one of our support staff and a detective to organize a surprise birthday party (from 6 feet away) for the little girl. They delivered gifts, pizza and a visit from a K9 officer with no fanfare and without telling the Chief or their supervisor,” Lee said.

Hispanic Star is a branch of the organization We Are All Human that seeks to support all Hispanics across the country.

Edgar Carreon, Utah hub leader for Hispanic Star, described the organization’s efforts.

“The purpose of the Hispanic Star is to create a platform that highlights and share stories of contributions Hispanics make to society. It is also a platform for Hispanics of all backgrounds to come together to bring about positive acts of kindness in our community,” Carreon said.

After receiving almost 200,000 personal care items (soaps, hair products, feminine hygiene products, laundry detergent) Hispanic Star sent out a call to anyone in the area who needed basic supplies. They organized five locations in the Salt Lake valley to distribute 2,000 kits during the summer.

Telemundo, Univision and radio stations broadcasted the events, inviting anyone who had been adversely impacted by the pandemic to come get kits full of necessities. All the sup-

plies were gone within an hour.

Not long after the death of George Floyd and the surge of protests calling for defunding of police departments, the Midvale precinct of Unified Police received fortification rather than opposition. Boxes of doughnuts, stacks of cookies and bouquets of flowers arrived at their office.

Precinct Chief Randy Thomas said, “We’ve never had so many doughnuts delivered in my entire life. I can’t eat another doughnut.” l

Culturally inclusive curriculum is a work in progress at Olympus High

Olympus’ curriculum is set by the Utah State Board of Education. Granite has a Curriculum and Instruction Department which approves textbooks. There is also Educational Equity staff. “I think we’re going to see those two departments working together more,” Perschon said.

“Right now, all my 10th-grade world civilizations teachers use the same book. But I think most of them use it as a jumping off point.

There are so many online resources—access to primary sources and documents. A lot of teachers bring those into instruction,” Perschon said.

History is an obvious example, but another subject open to diversity is English.

“There are no specific texts teachers have to teach. So to teach that process—because what you’re learning in English class is a process of how to think—there is freedom with the texts you choose,” Perschon said.

Perschon welcomes feedback on inclusivity (or lack thereof) by parents and students. He has a good working relationship with Wunderli, who is heavily involved at Olympus with the Friend 2 Friend charity and linked student organization.

lympus High principal Steve Perschon learned something interesting when he taught seventh- grade Utah History. “I could tell by the comments kids made how their parents talked about politics at home. Interpretation of history begins at home,” Perschon said.

In a Sept. 14 conversation, Perschon and Jen Wunderli, parent of six Olympus alumni, said both home and school curriculum play a role in learning. A curriculum that’s inclusive of many cultures is a work in progress.

“Olympus has one of the highest percentages of Caucasian students—84%. Then it’s 8% Latino/Hispanic, 3.5% Asian, 3% African American and 1% American Indian/ Alaska Native. Students from the Middle East are classified as Caucasian in our numbers. But the rest of Granite District is much more diverse,” Perschon said.

Wunderli’s daughter Kate graduated in 2020, and was one of a few Black students at Olympus. “I think she felt she got ‘framed’ for a lot of things because she’s Black,” Wunderli said.

Perschon monitors himself for “microaggressions.” “It’s a word we hear a lot lately.

There’s a lot of parental support for learning more. But our community is also somewhat sheltered—there is a lack of exposure to diverse cultures.

“This is an ongoing conversation. You can’t be inclusive if you don’t know what’s going on. It’s important for people to speak up and to listen when they do,” Wunderli said.

“Teaching starts young,” she said. “I don’t think little kids notice skin color, or if they do, they don’t make much of it. But I’ve been working with some junior high kids, and there is some friction there. It starts small: someone ‘won’t come to an event because so-and-so is going to be there.’ And they don’t say it has anything to do with skin color, but what they see is ‘difference,’ and they are afraid of it. We have to nip it in the bud when it starts.”

One thing Perschon wishes is that he could get teaching applicants from more diverse backgrounds.

“I’ve been here for seven years, and all my history teachers are phenomenal—it’s a strong group. But I wish we could get some teachers who match the district demographic.

To be honest, I’ve never had any apply. I’ve never had an interview with a Black applicant to teach history here,” Perschon said.

Perschon feels that the recent attention on Black Lives Matter changed things. “This

year’s movement is changing the culture.

And that’s usually easier for the younger generation. They’re fine with it.

“In older generations, you might learn about slavery and how bad it was, and you didn’t want to focus on the bad, so then you stopped talking about it. It seemed like ancient history. It depends on where you live, too.

American history is not taught the same way in the northeast of the U.S. as it is in the South.

“Now we’re talking about things like how this country was shaped and largely built by [enslaved people]. Structurally, the labor of [enslaved people] is a big part of American history. And I think people are ready to acknowledge and talk about that, especially the younger generation,” Perschon said.

Wunderli added that her family talks about why tragic news events bring out dramatic protests and riots. “We should be talking about it all the time in a civilized way. To have that ongoing dialogue is the only way to move forward. That way, we aren’t suddenly talking about inequality every time something terrible happens, and then we forget about it again until the next terrible thing,” Wunderli said. l

Dominant Lady Titans lead the charge in Region 6 girls soccer

irls soccer was one of the first high school sports to start playing after COVID-19 put an end to competition last spring. The Olympus Lady Titans have made the most of their return to the field.

Olympus kicked off its season Aug. 6 and proceeded to win nine of its first 11 games. In Region 6 competition, the Titans got off to an 8-1 start. As of Sept. 18, the team was in first place, two games ahead of Skyline, Murray and Brighton in what is a competitive region. Fellow league foe East is also no slouch.

Still, the Titans have had their way with just about everyone.

In its first 12 games, Olympus has outscored its opponents 51-9. The Titans outpaced region teams 46-8 through the first nine matchups. Those totals included a 10-goal outburst in a shutout over Hillcrest on Aug. 25, eight goals in a blanking of Highland on Sept. 15 and nine goals in a 9-1 thrashing of Highland in the teams’ first meeting on Aug. 18. As of Sept. 16, Olympus had posted four shutouts and had seven games of scoring at least three goals.

The Titans’ only losses up to this point came against Corner Canyon on Aug. 11 in a shootout and at Brighton in a 1-0 setback on Sept. 10. On Aug. 13, to open Region 6 play,

Olympus defeated the Bengals 4-3. Olympus scored two goals in each half of this home game, with Emma Neff scoring twice.

In a season where Olympus has been hot offensively, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see so many contributors. Eleven players scored during the first 11 outings, with Lily Webster pacing the Titans with 13 goals. Neff had chipped in 12, and Kelly Bullock and Sofia Ward had five apiece.

Goalkeeper Callie Droitsh has had 3.5 shutouts and even scored a goal when she got a chance to play on the field. Alyssa Blanck has had some time in the net as well and contributed 1.5 shutouts.

Olympus’ regular season went through September and concludes Oct. 1 at Murray, which the Titans defeated in a shootout at home on Sept. 3. At our press deadline, Olympus was sixth in Class 5A in the Ratings Percentage Index standings, just ahead of league mate Skyline. At this pace, the Titans could secure a first-round bye and should have a home game in its first postseason game. The 5A state tournament gets underway on Oct. 8.

Olympus appears to have a bright future.

Though the team will lose seniors Webster and Ward, Neff, Bullock, Droitsh and Blanck will be back next season along with other key contributors. l

Holladay Artist of the Month paints Utah landscapes with an impressionistic flair

H

olladay Artist of the Month Kate Johnson paints the Utah landscape with the blurred beauty of an impressionist. It appears natural for her to do so.

However, she stated, “I think that I spent many years doing graphic design, which is always sharp and clear and, well, graphic. Maybe I just am less interested in that now.”

Armed with a BFA from the University of Utah in graphic design and later an MFA with an emphasis in illustration and printmaking, Johnson spent years as an art director and designer, primarily in publishing.

“I will still feel my heart beat faster at the sight of a beautifully designed and illustrated book,” she said. “But now, I’ve left the very tight deadlines of publishing, and I paint.” She has studied with Bonnie Posselli for the past few years. Posselli is known in part for her idyllic, pastoral scenes.

Johnson has lived in Holladay for close to 35 years “in the same house on the same street.” Born in Salt Lake City, she left for seven years during “the middle of my wonder years” for Montana. She credits Montana for adding to her repertoire of beautiful land-

scapes, “a strong undercurrent in my life,” she said.

The Utah landscape continues to move her. “The colors of Utah are singular to this place, and they inspire me,” she said. Johnson is an enthusiastic member of the plein air community (people who paint outside). The community itself, which she describes as “lovely and generous,” also inspires her.

Her favorite medium is oils. “It’s a luxury experience,” she said.

In her painting, “Winter Light,” the branches of a tree are bathed in a soft but intense yellow, like a gentle flame—a

bearer of some kind of truth that needs more pondering.

In “Juniper Sketch,” the focus is on the roots and base of the tree. It somehow seems more powerful now given the recent windstorm that uprooted so many trees in the valley. There is a reaching quality to both the roots and the branches seemingly striving for both heaven and earth.

“Utah Desert Solitude,” which is currently available for purchase, provides several literal and figurative layers of interest. The sky plays a prominent role and place on the canvas. The foreground is golden but is broken up by a drop or ledge.

More trails are coming to Salt Lake County

This year as the leaves changed I was reminded again how lucky we are to live in Utah where we get to experience four seasons in all their glory. Recently I had an opportunity to visit a beautiful area of our County--Butterfield Canyon--for a #BiketheButter Mountain Bike Rally.

With a gentle nudge from our mountain biking friends, we have an opportunity to take some of our Salt Lake County open space and make it more accessible. We have the chance to build a multiuse trail system in the southwest corner of the Salt Lake Valley and tie together Butterfield, Yellow Fork, and Rose Canyons. This exciting opportunity has been made possible with a partnership between Salt Lake County, the Bureau of Land Management, Rio Tinto, private property owners, and some dedicated

and passionate residents.

These residents have taken their passion for mountain biking and pulled the community together to raise money and speed up the timeline for a desired trail system.

This group recently raised $200,000 as a donation to begin this trail planning process.

Mountain biking is one of the fastest growing high school sports in Utah and the west side of the valley has over a thousand students participating. Developing this trail system makes these recreational opportunities available right in their backyard and will expand participation and access. The proposed trail system will link over 70 miles of trail and will provide recreational opportunities for hikers and equestrians, in addition to mountain bikers.

It will be another jewel in the open space crown of Salt Lake County.

Ordinary pumpkins become extraordinary in the hands of ‘The Carving Chizel’

rowing up in Spanish Fork, Aaron Reimschiissel always celebrated Halloween with his family in a big way. His mother’s birthday happened to be on Oct. 31 and she celebrated every year with a special party. By carving jack-o’-lanterns for her annual celebrations, Reimschiissel discovered his special talent for transforming ordinary pumpkins into works of art.

This year, Reimschiissel plans to create his unique pumpkin carvings at Halloween events around the state including the Utah Water Conservancy Pumpkin Walk and the Pumpkin Walk in Daybreak. Last year, he carved pumpkins at Pumpkin Nights in Salt Lake City. He specializes in carving very large pumpkins that often can weigh several hundred pounds. These pumpkins have extremely thick and hard rinds which allow for sculpting depth and texture. He has carved everything from faces to monsters and animals to elaborate castles out of pumpkins.

“I try to do something a little bit different each time,” explained Reimschiissel, who uses the name “The Carving Chizel” professionally. He never knows what the pumpkin will look like in advance. “Within just a couple of minutes I have to decide what to make. I have to look at the shape and see what fits into it. That’s the biggest challenge. A face can fit any type of shape. You have to adjust with the pumpkin,” he said.

“Entertainment via escapism is always needed in the darkest of times.

We can’t expect everyone to feel comfortable participating this year. We can, however, do everything possible to guarantee safety procedures are in place for those who do,” a Dead City spokes-monster (wishing to stay in character) said.

“This industry has its fans and artists that desperately need a distraction; we understand the responsibility not to disappoint, having invested in all the necessary resources to keep everyone happy and healthy.”

Dead City Haunted House is one of Utah’s newest indoor haunted attractions, now in its third season. They are featuring over 50 rooms of fear, with three all-new areas for 2020. Owner Tim Riggs has a history with the local spook alley industry, dating back to the Utah Fun Dome Haunted House, Rocky Point, and more.

With the COVID pandemic, attraction organizers have had to address customer safety by adding additional precautions and mothballing certain

practices.

“We can only do this together, so face masks are mandatory—to keep the screams safe. The show has been completely overhauled this year while maintaining as many scare spots as possible.

Hands-on options have been suspended, while all actors are kept at socially distanced positions inside the show,” the Dead City spokes-monster said. “Surfaces are cleaned regularly, several UV air filtration systems have been installed above the show to run constantly, and nightly fog sanitizes surfaces from entry to exit. All mazes and claustrophobic tunnels have been removed to maintain group distancing and avoid touching. Online ticket purchases are encouraged at a discounted rate.”

All staff and cast members have temperatures checked before being allowed backstage. Employees communicate and operate through personal mobile devices, and all backstage meetings are kept outside whenever possible. Cast members apply their own makeup, with very few needing it due to the heavy use of masks this season. Bridges have been built above the tighter areas to give actors the ability to operate some new surprises from a safe distance.

As part of keeping staff and patrons apart, Dead City will employ puppets or animatronic monsters to provide the screams.

“You will all have to come see if you can tell who (or what) is real or not inside the show and what they (or it) might do.

Very cutting edge to our knowledge, just one of the many custom creations by our engineering owner that helps make Dead City Haunted House unique to Utah,” the spokes-monster said.

Halloween isn’t Dead City’s only exclusive holiday; they have adapted their attraction to multiple holidays this past year. They hosted a “Krampus Night” in December, based on the central European tradition of a half-goat, half-demon that visits naughty children on Christmas, a complete opposite of Santa Claus. The Krampus event allows Dead City to give the Christmas season a monstrous makeover with a visit by Krampus and his minions. Dead City also hosts “Love Bites,” a vampire-themed Valentine’s Day experience that they hope to do again this coming year.

Krampus Night caught national recognition, and Dead City was recognized

by HAuNTcon and Haunted Attraction Network as “2020 Haunters to Watch.”

The award stated, “Dead City Haunted House impressed us with their video creation, narrative tie into their overall theme, social media contest, and overall use of a limited budget.”

That pumpkin was featured in a local newspaper article and he was asked to carve pumpkins at another Halloween party. It was there that he met members of the Utah Giant Pumpkin Growers Association. He has been carving for them ever since.

Reimschiissel credits his mom, who enjoys crafting and drawing caricatures, with encouraging his interest in art. He has studied drawing as well as sculpture. Reimschiissel continues to study form and shape to build his repertoire of pumpkin designs.

“Right now I’m learning about skeletons,” he said. “I just bought one to learn more anatomy. I have a lot of ideas in my head!”

Reimschiissel’s wife, Chelsea, had never seen 3D pumpkin carvings before she saw his work. “It’s so cool how creative he can get,” she said. “He never goes in with a plan. Most of the time he just wings it which is amazing to me.

He gets asked all the time how he plans [his designs] but most of the time he just shows up and carves.”

The spontaneous nature of Reimschiissel’s art and the fact that he is often carving in front of an audience is the most challenging aspect. “When people are watching there’s a level of thinking ‘you have to make it look good!”” he said.

He recalled a particularly difficult carving project in which he sculpted a winged devil out of a pumpkin and ended up inserting a separate piece of rind to make the head.

Reimschiissel’s two young daughters, Kaiyah and Kinlee, are his biggest fans. Kaiyah, who is 9 years old, is showing an interest in carving pumpkins as well. “They have so much pride in their dad’s pumpkins. The best thing is bringing them to events. They get so excited and will just stand there forever watching him. They like to tell people that’s their dad,” Chelsea said.

“It’s fun to see the kids’ reactions,” said Reimschiissel, describing the aspect he likes best about carving in front of an audience. In 2019, he carved a “punk beast” pumpkin at Thanksgiving Point. The Utah Giant Pumpkin Growers Association later took that pumpkin and displayed it in front of Primary Children’s Hospital. Being able to share his work with the hospitalized children was one of the highlights of his carving career.

He is looking forward to the upcoming Halloween season and carving more unique pumpkin creations. Halloween film haunts in our backyard

According to a report that came out late last year by the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) which includes the Utah Film Commission, film production dollars spent in Utah more than doubled between 2015 and 2019 to about $87 million. The state film commission attributes the growth to a variety of scenery, economic incentives, and available talent. In a press release from this September available on the film commission’s website, it was announced that the GOED board has approved “five new productions for state film incentives, generating an estimated economic impact of $6.5 million and creating over 185 local jobs.”

Utah horror film enthusiasts will find no shortage of locations to visit this Halloween season. A recent production that was filmed around Salt Lake City and has a story set in the state is the critically acclaimed 2018 horror tragedy film, “Hereditary,” starring Gabriel Byrne and Toni Collette and written and directed by Ari Aster. The story follows a family in turmoil as they are haunted by a menacing presence following the death of a secretive maternal grandmother. School scenes were shot at West High School in the Salt Lake City School District and at Utah State Fair Park. The exteriors of the family’s house and tree house were shot in Summit County, and perhaps the most picturesque and hauntingly beautiful scenes at the cemetery were filmed at Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy.

“Hereditary” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2018 and was a critical and commercial success grossing over $80 million.

Two of the films in the legendary “Halloween” horror franchise were also filmed in Utah, primarily around Salt Lake City and Midvale: “Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers” released in 1988 and “Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers” released the following year. Although receiving negative reviews from critics, much like the other films in the franchise, they have maintained a strong cult following. More than 40 years after the first film’s release, you will still find Michael Myers masks, costumes, and decorations in Halloween stores like Spirit Halloween.

Although principal photography for “Halloween 4” was completed in California, filmmakers moved production to Salt Lake City in the spring of 1988 because of rising costs and had to import fall leaves and other fall scenery to make it look like October.

comatose state and escapes transport to a sanitarium in a plight to kill his only living relative, his niece, Jamie Lloyd, daughter of Laurie Strode, a prominent character in the first two and later films in the franchise. The McGillis School in Salt Lake City stands in for Jamie’s school, and her home with her foster family is located in the lower Avenues and was actually up for sale in late 2019. Decorations remind us of the existence of ghosts, vampires, goblins, werewolves, and other non-human creatures. We may even become a bit more startled by that unexplained noise in the middle of the night. We might wonder if others from beyond share our space.

There are many stories, myths, and folklores concerning ghosts throughout historical contexts. The common foundational plot for all these tales is a spirit has moved on from its original form and is now somewhere between our world and the afterlife. Some lore focuses on the ghosts of animals and objects, but let’s focus on the human ghosts for now.

Ghosts may be noticed through electromagnetic interference, a drop in temperature, items moving seemingly on their own, unrecognizable whispers or other audio abnormalities, and/or environmental features like fire, water, electricity, and wind behaving rather strangely.

“Ghost Adventures,” a 19-season television show, sends out a crew to investigate hauntings.

The crew members commonly have a variety of tools to help them locate ghosts through the avenues mentioned above. They even created their own device called the Extra Investigator Box which detects magnetic, infrared, and other physical events.

If you’re not a star on this Travel Channel show, there are a few household devices that can help detect a ghost. Thermometers, infrared cameras, and motion detectors can be used to detect temperature changes and minimal motion changes. A tape recorder can be used to convert communication outside of our perceptual field into sensations humans can understand.

Ghosts are often believed to be attached to a place, item or person. There are varying stories about why and or how ghosts stick around, but regardless, they often do. Some cultures around the world welcome these ghosts, as they are believed to be visiting family members or other loved ones.

In America, we often do not welcome ghosts and try to rid them from our spaces. If you do suspect a ghost to be in your space and wish to remove them, perhaps helping it to move on,

what can you do? There are a few different recommendations from varying sources for getting rid of a ghost. Before I dive into a few, let me provide a word of caution. When dealing with the supernatural, always do your research, be respectful and cautious, and stay aware.

If you’re convinced a ghost is in your space, you might figure out why it’s there in the first place. Some believe a ghost can become attached to an item, location, or person, continually haunting them. Another belief is that a ghost has unfinished business. If possible, determine why a ghost is still lingering and then the more effective course of action would be to help the ghost resolve their business.

However, if it’s impossible to figure out why a ghost is hanging around, there are some possible actions. A popular television series worldwide with 15 seasons in just as many years, “Supernatural,” shows audiences how “hunters” track monstrous creatures and rids them from this earthly plane. “Supernatural” shows perpetuate the idea that ghosts can be temporary eliminated with salt and iron. It is commonly believed that supernatural beings are aversive to salt. If known, hunters will try to salt or burn the bones or item the ghost is attached to.

In addition, ghost-repelling spells are used in “Supernatural” when other avenues of riding a ghost fail to work, along with holy water. A common lore throughout contexts is that ghosts cannot enter or be on holy ground.

Suggestions from entertainment and television should be taken with a grain of salt though (no pun intended). Outside of entertainment, momentary interaction may be recommended.

If you suspect a ghost is frequently hanging around, it may not be malicious. In which case, it is possible to speak directly to them. When talking to a ghost, experts believe it is important to set boundaries, be assertive, respectfully ask them to stop bothering you and confidently let them know that they are not welcome in the space. After interacting, do not do it again.

If a ghost still lingers, it may be best to seek out professional help for a ritual or ceremony. Or, alternatively, remove yourself from the space by moving out.

It’s been a decade since COVID-19 reached our shores, ushering in 45 years of hand sanitizer, remote learning and face mask protesters sporting apostrophe-addled signs like “Your an idiot” and “Parent’s against masks”.

But now it’s October. Halloween is at risk.

S*** just got real.

Nothing could be scarier than 2020, with its earthquakes and hurricane-force winds and rising COVID infection rates and elections, but Halloween isn’t just about fear. Halloween is the one day a year conservative moms can buy push-up bras and dress like lusty dog catchers, guilt free. It’s the day Snickers for breakfast and Reese’s for lunch are appropriate meals. It’s the day politically-inappropriate celebrities get tagged on social media.

But COVID changed everything. Los Angeles prohibited trick-or-treating along with haunted house venues, Halloween carnivals and other spooky activities. After a swift and furious backlash from parents who need to give their kids ONE thing to look forward to this year, the city backed down and “recommended” common sense. Like that’s a thing.

Even then, it’s gonna take a lot to scare our children anymore in 2020. They spent months locked in the house, learning fractions online and wearing face masks to the grocery store. Their stress levels are sky-high and adrenal fatigue has caused weepy breakdowns and heartbreaking acceptance.

On the bright side, COVID-19 ushered in a whole new series of costumes for the holiday, including coronavirus outfits, teachers in hazmat suits and the very funny Elsa in a plastic bubble.

I think I’ll dress up as a mail-in ballot since that seems to be the most terrifying thing in the country today. (Sidenote: Vote on Nov. 3. Vote by mail, vote in person, drop your vote off in a ballot box. I don’t

care how you vote. Crawl through a lake of spiders, a graveyard of zombies - just vote!)

The CDC issued COVID-19 risk categories, pertaining to Halloween activities. The lowest risk is a virtual festival where celebrations are held on Zoom because we just can’t get enough of Zoom, can we? (Sidenote: Has anyone investigated the connection between the coronavirus and Zoom?

Hmm??)

Moderate risk includes small gatherings where individuals stay apart from each other and wear those Halloween masks from the ‘70s because there is no way germs (or breath) will get through that thick plastic.

Higher risk activities will be your social distanced haunted houses where vampires and witches stand six feet away and snarl the horrible things they’d do if they could just get a little closer. That horrifying thing breathing down your back is the lo-

Posing the highest risk are large, in-person, nomask gatherings made popular in places like Utah and Washington Counties. (Sidenote: Idiots.)

People have tried to ruin Halloween for centuries. The latest attempt was the introduction of Trunk-or-Treat, which should be banned in all 50 states for its mediocre contribution to the holiday, so I don’t think COVID will stop Halloween enthusiasts. Some people find Halloween offensive, with its glittery bats and baby werewolves. But everything is offensive this year. If something didn’t offend someone in 2020, did it really happen?

I guess we’ll see if people party safely this Halloween when COVID results start rolling in two weeks later. I’ll stand outside your hospital room with signs like, “I wish youd listened” and “Your an imbecile”.l
