ENGINEER RETURNS TO THANK ENGAGING CHURCHILL SCIENCE TEACHER

H

ave you ever thought about going back to thank a teacher? The one who inspired you or just made the subject fun? Sarah Mills Snell decided to do that after she graduated from BYU with a degree in mechanical engineering, and got a job working with crash test dummies at Autoliv in Ogden.

“Brian LeStarge was my eighth-grade science teacher at Churchill Jr. High. He was an engaging teacher and got excited about things. Everyone has one of those teachers, I think, whose love of the subject makes you love the subject,” Snell said.

Snell had originally thought about different career paths, but science wasn’t on her radar. “Mr. LeStarge taught us that if you can get through the paper stuff, the theory of how things work, then you can do the exciting things! You can do experiments and play with things and see how they work in real life,” Snell said.

So, she decided after nearly a decade to go back and tell LeStarge what an impact his teaching had had on her life. “I went back to his room one day after school was over. I said, ‘I want you to know that you were the spark of what I ended up doing in college and beyond.’”

Snell said being in the classroom again brought back memories—the setup was the same, and it still had that science lab smell.

“He was really surprised. I was just one student from 10 years ago. I think he was blown away that someone would want to come back and talk to him. 2020 Tree Giveaway was a success despite some trees not arriving from Oregon

O

n an early autumn day in September, volunteers loaded trees into Holladay residents’ cars in the 2020 Tree Giveaway.

It was the third year of the annual event.

Normally, it takes place during planting season in the spring. However, it was postponed due to the pandemic.

Still, world events affected the Tree Giveaway in September. One half of the trees scheduled to be given away were in Oregon, much of which was on fire. Though the Oregon trees did not make it to Holladay, residents were grateful for the prairifire crabapple and snow fountain cherry trees that made their way into their cars and onto their properties.

“Anything we can do to kind of revitalize and help continue that urban forest is ultimately the goal of the Tree Committee. It’s the volunteer organization trying to preserve our tree canopy in the City of Holladay,” Dennis Roach, chair of the Holladay City Tree Committee, said.

Concerns about Holladay’s tree canopy have been ongoing for the last several years, and about a year ago an ordinance was passed to address the situation. The ordinance oversees not only public property, but also private property.

Some tree removal was occurring because of what Roach called the building of “McMansions.”

“It’s just trying to make sure that there’s that accountability to developers that are going in and they’re clearcutting or they’re eliminating these big, old-growth trees for homes and then not putting anything back in its place that’s going to be significant or close to what was there before.

“Anytime anyone does major renovation, or anything that requires a permit, they have to have some kind of tree canopy preservation plan submitted as well,” Roach said.

As part of a conservancy plan, trees are given away yearly by the Tree Committee with additional help from volunteers.

Doing most of the heavy lifting was volunteer Detective Shane Laycock.

“We wanted to come out and show Holladay we’re more involved than just policing.

We support these types of events for the community,” Laycock said.

Others in the community helped as well.

Travis Jones said, “I’m a Holladay resident, and I love this community. Also, a tree

geek for 20-plus years. And I’m on the Tree Committee.”

Volunteer Kristen Elizabeth said, “Well, I do care about the air we breathe, and our property values, and so trees help with both of those.”

Cecilie Mattison, the newest member of the Tree Committee, noted that the trees given away are handpicked and the Committee makes choices with the nursery as to which trees will thrive in Holladay. “So, I think it should be a win-win for everybody,” she said

Continued from front page physics, said he’s always thinking of ways to make his class more engaging. “As a junior high teacher, I feel like my job is to ‘romance’ students into my discipline. I need to win them over to my subject by making it more interesting.”

After LeStarge taught some of his own kids, he found out that they would forget the specifics of what he’d taught them, but they would remember how they felt in class.

“How they felt about the class and my subject had staying power. So I’m always monitoring whether the kids are enjoying the class, and I try to teach with enthusiasm,” LeStarge said.

LeStarge continues to romance students with a reward system: learn the theory and do the book work, then every couple of weeks they get to ‘play’ with hands-on experiments.

“He had different projects that would help us experience scientific principles. We’d learn how to use the scientific method, or how to record test data in a fun way. I remember doing bottle rockets out on the field, or making wind-up cars.

“As a student, I was OK in science, but I didn’t like doing the math or learning the rules. He was good at teaching me that if you can get through the rules part, then you get to do the fun experiments. And it’s true—that’s what I do at my job. I get to design car air bags, and then I do impact testing with crash test dummies. It’s fun,” Snell said.

LeStarge said that Churchill has always been supportive of him and his methods. “It’s a great place to teach hands-on eighth-grade science. I would not wish to teach anywhere else. The classrooms are large and full of natural light, and they all have sinks and room for most labs. I even brought my own kids here even though we lived outside of the school boundary,” LeStarge said.

“The administration and staff have always been supportive over the 27 years that I’ve worked here. Olympus High kicks off school pantry with donation night Nov. 12

lympus High School is starting a school pantry this fall.

School pantries, which help students who are food insecure, are sponsored by the Granite Education Foundation, but their supplies and maintenance come from ongoing community donations.

“The Olympus community is amazing. This project is special because it will stay within Olympus High School and directly help students here who are food insecure,” said parent volunteer Jen Wunderli. Wunderli is a board member of Granite Education Foundation and has six kids who have graduated from Olympus.

“Our grand opening of the pantry is Nov. 12, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Olympus. We want to invite all the community to come and see what the need is and encourage them to donate. We’re always in need of shelf stable items, hygiene kits and monetary donations. We hope people will come that night and support our students with donations,” Wunderli said.

Wunderli started the charity Friend2Friend several years ago after serving in her kids’ schools and seeing the need that was there. In recent years, Friend2Friend teamed up with Olympus High to become an official school club.

“The kids at Olympus came up with the Fresh Food Five.

Every student who is able to can contribute $5 to the club’s Venmo account, @friend2friend. The money will be used to buy fresh food for the Olympus pantry,” Wunderli said.

The Friend2Friend charity and school club have done big projects in the past, like the Night of Service, which was attended by hundreds of people last December. Students and community members tied quilts, collected toy donations, made Santa Sacks and packed food supplies for food insecure families.

“We can’t do the Night of Service this year because of COVID, which is a real disappointment. So we’re hoping the

pantry project is something people will feel good about giving to,” Wunderli said.

Olympus senior Andrew Benson is co-president of Friend2Friend. “We want to raise awareness to sustain the food pantry this year and for years to come. Since the pandemic started, there has been a 300% increase in need in our district. We wanted to do something to combat that,” Benson said.

To promote the Fresh Food Five, Friend2Friend made and shared a video on social media to get the word out that if students at Olympus each gave $5, it would make a big difference.

“We thought this was a good time to start a food pantry at

Olympus and start the fresh food box. The biggest impact that being a part of this club has had on me is learning to recognize the needs in the community, and then come up with ways to act on them. And I’ve learned how to gather support from my peers so we can show out in force and satisfy those needs,” Benson said.

Like all students, Benson was home for a two-week dismissal in late September and early October when COVID case numbers climbed above 15 at Olympus. Benson learned to be flexible with everything from his learning to his involvement as the yearbook editor and member of the volleyball team. Flexibility for Friend2Friend means managing the large number of kids who participate.

“There are over 200 students at the school who are involved in Friend2Friend. Obviously, we can’t have events where that many people come. We created a SignUpGenius, and we’ve listed all our activities and how many people can sign up. The kids get a link and then reply if they’re interested,” Benson said.

Donations for the Olympus food pantry can be brought to the opening night on Nov. 12, or to the office at the school anytime for the rest of the school year. They are most in need of shelf stable items like peanut butter, tuna fish, mac and cheese, spaghetti, Hamburger Helper-type mixes, rice, beans, pasta sauce, boxes of cereal, oatmeal and packaged snacks.

The Venmo account for monetary donations is @friend2friend, and should be earmarked for Olympus food pantry.

“I’m really excited about the fresh food aspect of the pantry. These kids are craving fresh fruits and vegetables. We’re going to create meal packs with all the ingredients and the recipe so kids can just grab it and take it home for a family meal,” Wunderli said. l

Sales tax numbers show large, sustained COVID-19 boost for most cities

T

his June, the City Journals featured an article about how the first sales tax reports released by the state showed early signs that COVID-19 had actually boosted sales tax collection in the month of March, relative to the same month the previous year.

Readers responded with valid feedback, pointing out that sales tax numbers for March included all the panic-buying of food and toilet paper that was going on at the time. They theorized that sales tax numbers would go down in the following months as the bulk-buying relaxed and as the County’s order to not allow dine-in eating was put in place.

Others pointed out that an increase in sales tax from year to year should be expected, as populations grow and new businesses open. They suggested that the Journals compare 2020 sales tax numbers not just to 2019, but to previous years as well in order to provide more context to how COVID-19 is impacting our economy.

So with these two pieces of feedback, this reporter downloaded additional sales tax reports from the Utah Tax Commission for the months of March through June between the years of 2017 and 2020. What this reporter found is that COVID-19 has been a big boost for the coffers of most cities in the Salt Lake valley.

Twelve out of 15 cities collected more sales tax in the four-month period than in the same period any of the previous three years. The only cities that didn’t were Salt Lake City, Murray and Sandy. (Murray and Sandy trailed previous years’ numbers March-May, but rebounded in June to beat previous June numbers.)

Artist of the Month, Camille C. Wheatley is ‘drawn to the quiet, understated moments in our surroundings’

“M

y children aren’t afraid to tell me that my photographs are ‘boring,’” Camille Wheatley joked. “I am drawn to the quiet, understated moments in our surroundings. I give the seemingly boring a second chance, allowing viewers to take a second look at what is often misrepresented as dull.”

Holladay Artist of the Month Camille Wheatley is drawn to details. This, in part, is because she is a licensed architect. One of her favorite classes while obtaining her architecture degree was architectural photography, which led to a life as a photographer.

“My photographic passion lies in finding beauty in the banal, seeking majesty in the mundane and discovering the divine in the otherwise dull details of life,” she said.

As a mother of four, her photographs are taken with her iPhone because sometimes she has “the blink of an eye to snap a shot of an intriguing moment that captures my attention, before one (or more) of my children is pulling me away from said intriguing moment.”

Not only does she use an iPhone to take her photographs, she also does no editing whatsoever. “What you see is what you get in my moment of seeing something,” she said.

She has had a couple of works exhibited

at the Springville Museum of Art in the Annual Spiritual and Religious Art Show. One of these photographs included, “Light as Divided by Darkness.” The title is borrowed from the Book of Genesis 1:4 which states, “God divided the light from the darkness.”

“My photograph captures a moment depicting a mass of darkness dominating a lighter portion that is subdivided by dark gridlines. Part of the intrigue lies in trying to figure out what this unedited photograph is actually portraying. From what darkness and light did I extract this illustrative photograph?” she said.

Outside of the spiritual dimensions of her photographs, Wheatley believes that photography and architecture go “hand in hand.” “The same sensibilities that accompany good architecture are manifested in good photography: composition; spatial awareness; the presence of and utilization of light; careful attention to subject matter; lines; etc.”

Her carefully constructed photographs will be on display at Holladay City Hall in the main foyer throughout November at 4580 S. 2300 East.

Neff’s Canyon fire awakens residents to dangers of the wildland urban interface

T

he small but intractable Neff’s Canyon fire in the Mount Olympus Wilderness area burnt from September through October, torching over 60 acres and reminding residents of the inherent dangers of living near wildland urban interfaces.

“When you’re looking out your kitchen window at the ridge and you can see flames, it’s scary, especially when the neighborhood watched conifer trees exploding into flames one by one,” said John Noblock, a member of the Mount Olympus Community Council.

The timber and oak brush fire began approximately 1 mile up the Neff’s Canyon trail after a lightning strike created underground embers that kindled for days before spreading to other foliage, according to fire investigators. Over 150 firefighters contributed to fighting the Neff’s fire in the initial weeks, cutting vegetation lines and clearing debris. Leaders from the Forest Service, Unified Fire and the Department of Natural Resources lived-streamed presentations in September that encouraged Holladay and Millcreek residents to be prepared for potential fire encroachment.

“You can think of it as a three-phase approach: ‘Ready.

Set. Go,” said John Slatore, Unified Fire Authority incident commander. “The first phase is removing leaves, cleaning gutters and clearing patio furniture. The ‘Set” part is to prepare a 72-hour pack. And, if we reach the ‘Go’ phase, that means when it’s time to go, you go. Don’t wait; evacuate.”

Cove resident Kiara Benne said, “We hoped it wouldn’t get to evacuation, but for the first time I was forced into the feeling of fear about the risk [of wildfires]. After seeing what’s happened to people in California and Oregon, it makes us realize this is something we don’t have a whole lot

of control over.”

The fire’s containment remained low in the initial weeks in large part to the perilous canyon terrain, which posed challenges to fire managers who struggled to get equipment and personnel into the steep and rocky locations. “It’s tricky and dangerous for the pilots to be flying in those canyons to deliver water buckets and fire retardant,” said Slatore.

One firefighter was injured after being struck by a fallen tree on the steep mountainside. The firefighter has since recovered. The fire was snuffed out in October with the help of a rainstorm. The Neff’s fire is one of hundreds of conflagrations this year witnessed across the state during a fire season that was intensified by drought-like conditions.

“It’s been an unusually hot and dry year. We are currently in record-setting territory for vegetation dryness, which is a problem because that’s when you see extreme fire behavior,” said Nanette Hosenfeild, meteorologist with Great Basin Coordination Center, speaking to Holladay residents via Zoom.

The fire impacted the quality of community life beyond increased stress levels.

“It felt like you were stepping out into a campfire. The air quality was really bad,” Benne said.

Nonetheless, there is a sense that the fire may increase preparedness for future threats.

“I think we lucked out, because if we had a down canyon wind event it could have been catastrophic. That’s when it suddenly gets real for people,” said Noblock, a 22-year Cove resident and chemical engineer. “During the days all I heard was a chorus of chainsaws. People are starting to take

defensible space on their property seriously, clearing bushes and trees around their house.”

Benne, a mother of two, said, “We got prepared after the [March] earthquake; we put together little emergency packs.

On the golf course, the Titans had a strong showing at the 5A championships, held Oct. 5 and 6 at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway. Olympus shot 5 over par and earned a fourth-place showing, seven strokes in back of third-place Spanish Fork and 19 shots behind runner-up Park City. Skyline claimed the state title with an impressive -35 performance.

Luke Smith was the Titans’ top individual performer. The senior shot a 3 under par, totaling a 141 in the two-day tournament.

Lance Smith was 20th in the field with a 146 (2 under par) during the event. James Alder and Mitt Harris were each just a shot behind Smith, tying for 25th.

The Titans improved this season on last year’s eighth-place showing. Like last year, Olympus posted the second-best scoring among Region 6 teams at the state championship event. l

uring a two-day affair at Liberty Park, the Olympus girls tennis team battled against the some of the best high school players in the state. The Titans qualified three players for state—at second singles and a pair at first doubles—and finished in a tie for ninth place at the Class 5A state tournament, Oct. 1, 3.

It was an improvement over last season’s 13th-place finish. The Titans have been trying to work their way back to the top of Utah high school tennis after five straight season of state championships. Olympus won crowns in the 5A ranks in 2018 and 2017, and won 4A titles from 2014 to 2016.

At this year’s tournament, senior Ashlyn Jackson grabbed the third seed in second singles. She went 3-4 during the regular season. Jackson defeated her first-round opponent 6-1, 6-2 to move onto the second round.

There, she fell 6-1, 6-2 but earned her team a point in the final standings.

Olympus football’s Tommy Barrus receives national recognition

I

n a Friday night game versus Riverton, Olympus right guard Tommy Barrus made an outstanding block to clear the path for teammate Ryan Reynard’s 66-yard touchdown run. Although the Titans lost in a nail-biting finish, this play would result in much more than a Titan touchdown.

In 2018, the NFL announced the “Way to Play Award” following the success of its educational series of the same name. The goal of both the award and preceding series has been to create a new culture in football that emphasizes the safety of players. The League recognizes one high school player each week that exemplifies the goals of the initiative.

Barrus was announced as the Week 5 recipient of the award on Oct. 10, 2020 on “Good Morning Football.” Host Michael Robinson, a former Seattle Seahawk, was full of praise for Barrus’ form.

“I love how he leads with his hands and takes his helmet out of the play,” said Robinson. “This big guard just pancakes the linebacker. I love this, especially being a former fullback.”

The Way to Play initiative focuses on safety, specifically in tackling and blocking form. The campaign’s slogan, “Knees bent. Pads down. Head up and out,” describes the safest way players can approach a tackle or block.

This initiative comes in response to complaints regarding former professional football players suffering from degenerative brain diseases. One way to attack this issue head on is to do just the opposite—keep players heads out of the play. Leagues of all ages have been enforcing strict penalties on players that use the crown of their head in a tackle.

When Barrus entered the 2020 football season, he certainly was not expecting national recognition for a play made in a varsity game. After finishing up the lacrosse season, he shifted his focus to football. The first week of practice he realized he would be the Titan’s starting right guard.

Following a season as a member of the sophomore team, he found himself a sudden starter on this year’s Titan’s varsity roster. After looking up to last year’s Olympus High standouts Emerson Comlon and Lucas Spillett, he was now expected to fill that spot.

“It was definitely a shock to the team when Emerson left as a three-year starter. I had to step it up and fill some big shoes,” said Barrus.

Barrus knows that he would not have this national recognition without looking up to those two influential players.

Barrus was able to watch Comlon, one of the best guards in the state, to learn proper form.

Coming off a big announcement, Barrus is still focused on the games ahead. Challenges keep coming at schools this year.

The pandemic kept Granite educators in suspense about learning modalities until just days before the year began. A wind storm on Sept. 8 knocked out power in Holladay for several days and closed schools like Spring Lane Elementary. A police shooting near Howard Driggs Elementary on Sept. 17 put the school in a temporary shelter-inplace precaution.

And it’s only the end of first quarter.

Two elementary school principals say that keeping the focus on kids helps them face these challenges.

“There are a number of things we’re doing to let kids know we care. It’s hard because teachers are planners by nature, and there is so much this year that they just can’t plan for. It’s difficult and frustrating. But our staff is positive. They’re hard workers who care about their kids,” said Afton Lambson, principal of Spring Lane Elementary School.

Schools now comply with a higher standard of cleaning. “We have extensive cleaning on a daily basis. Our school is equipped with a hospital-grade filtration system which cleans the air two to three times per hour, 24/7,” Lambson said.

They also limit who can be in the building, even parents. “We don’t allow parents to walk their students back to their classrooms. That was tricky, especially the first day. But I’m grateful for a community that has students’ safety as a priority,” Lambson said.

There are no in-school volunteers, and the Halloween parade was canceled. Students are required to wear masks at all times except when eating.

Lambson feels like the precautions are paying off. “Our case counts have been extremely low. We’re trying to be transparent, so parents can make decisions based on good information,” Lambson said.

“Going into the second day without power, the building was getting colder. We started thinking about things like the fire protection system not working, so we canceled school that day. The next day was a distance learning day,” Lambson said.

Lambson praises the resilience he’s seen so far this year. “I want to say how proud I am of our students and parents, our teachers, school and custodial staff. They have shown flexibility and dedication during these unique challenges.”

Howard Driggs principal Benjamin Peters has similar feelings about his staff and students.

“The students are resilient to changes like wearing masks; the power of our children is really amazing. And the efforts our teachers are putting in—they are all working so hard right now,” Peters said.

“Huge kudos goes out to everyone. Our teachers are here early in the morning and stay late at night. Some are teaching in person, some online and some a hybrid. Our students are wearing their masks all day long, and their families are supporting us,” Peters said.

Like all Granite District students, Driggs families can choose which modality of learning best suits their needs each quarter. The deadline to change from online or in-person learning was Oct. 9, but numbers seem to be “stable.”

“Our [COVID] numbers are low. The reason the kids are following the precautions is because the teachers are teaching these new routines, and doing it in a loving and kind way. The students understand that it’s an expectation,” Peters said.

Routines like recess and lunchtime look different now. Recess is one grade level at a time, and teachers take extra recess duty to make sure kids get that break. Grades are assigned a specific play area.

Lunchtime is limited to one grade at a time, and kids have assigned seating. All students get free lunch through a government program, which will last until the funds run out.

Kids with special needs services are followed by the school’s resource teacher. “If they are doing distance learning, our resource teacher and a para reach out to the family to do Zoom meetings. Some families come in for services— it depends on what they have. It’s not easy, but we’re working hard to make it work,” Peters said.

In addition to pandemic precautions, Driggs tested another emergency service when a law enforcement incident and shooting occurred on Sept. 17 in the area of 4500 South and 2300 East.

Driggs is located a few blocks away at 4340 S. 2700 East.

“Unified Police and Granite Police Officers called us within 1 to 2 minutes of the incident. It was 3:17 p.m. and we went right into a shelter-inplace protocol. We sent out an email and text notification to parents at 3:23, and at 3:25 we were notified that students were safe to be released.

All students were released at 3:25, which is just 5 minutes later than our regular release time,” Peters said.

Peters noted that staff are well-versed on safety protocols, and practice procedures throughout the year. Still, an elementary school on lockdown can shake anyone’s nerves.

With all these challenges, Granite District’s Board saw fit to approve a one-time bonus payment to all their contract and hourly staff. The payment, $100 for hourly staff and 1% of salary for contra “We’re incredibly grateful that the board is recognizing that the unique circumstances this year are more than they planned on. It makes a big difference to know they care and we’re appreciated,” Lambson said.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE Greetings to all of my Holladay friends and neighbors! I’m penning this article a few days after Governor Herbert’s news conference outlining a new strategy to battle the recent spike in Covid-19 cases occurring across the State. I know we all hoped for better days, but alas, we must continue to face the reality we are living in. Elected officials I engage with concede a sense of “Covid fatigue” in their respective communities. I admit to battling it myself. The bottom line for me is this, we all must re-commit to following the basic guidelines; wear a mask, wash your hands, stay home if you are sick and avoid unnecessary assembly of groups larger than 10 if social distancing cannot be maintained. These simple sacrifices go a long way toward keeping the virus at bay. In Holladay we care about our neighbors. If for no other reason, make these small sacrifices so our kids

can stay in school, businesses can remain open and those most at risk remain safe and healthy. We can’t let our guard down now!

On a lighter note, we are proceeding with the Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. This year we will be live streaming the event from St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church. Our Keynote Speaker is Holladay’s own Mr. Doug Wright. The Interfaith Council has put together an impressive program. Though we can’t meet in person, let us share together the message of hope and gratitude, a message more important than ever this Holiday season. Please refer to the adjacent Interfaith Service ad for details. Help us spread the message with your family, friends and neighbors.

I have had a number of inquiries regarding the Holladay Hills Development. Site work that started last spring stalled to clarify issues the developer was having with critical utility connections. Those issues have

been largely resolved. They are hoping to re-start this portion of the project this month. With that said, the timeline has been delayed by both Covid and west coast fires. These events have more than doubled the price of lumber and pushed back leasing opportunities that are critical to the development. So, what once was full speed ahead has understandably been delayed a bit.

The project is moving forward, just not on the timeline anticipated prior to the Covid outbreak. We will continue passing along updates we receive from the developer.

IN MEMORIAM The City of Holladay lost two influential leaders this past month, Dr. Barry Topham and Dave Chisholm. I asked my former Council colleague, Lynn Pace, and close friend of Dave, Stan Schaar, to share a few words in memoriam.

E. Barry Topham Last month I was shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden death of Barry Topham. Barry and his wife Trish have lived in the area we now call Holladay most of their lives. They were the moving force behind the years-long struggle to incorporate the City of Holladay in 1999. I got to know Barry a few years later when we both served on the City Council. Barry was passionate about this community and he always spoke up in defense of the way Holladay always was, and how he hoped it would always be. He felt strongly, and was outspoken, about many important issues of the day, including the vision for the Holladay Village Center, the redevelopment of the old Cottonwood Mall, deer in the Cottonwood area, traffic on Highland Drive, increasing housing densities within the City, and a host of other issues. He was never afraid to speak his mind, even if he was alone in his views.

Much of what has been built in the Village Center, and is now being developed at the Cottonwood Mall property, are a product of what he fought to achieve. Barry was often cantankerous, but he was always sincere, and always bold in speaking for what he believed was best for Holladay. He was my colleague and my friend, and I will miss him. This community has lost a great advocate, and Holladay is a better place today because of Barry Topham.

David Chisholm I am deeply saddened at the passing of Dave Chisholm. We have spent a lot of time together learning how to serve our fellow associates and colleague’s in data processing at Questar and emergency preparedness for Holladay City. Dave has always been a skilled hard worker not only in his garden but spending countless volunteer hours implementing plans to help people prepare for a safe and effective response to a disaster. He was a resilience leader and a great peer for me to look up to. He is truly the kindest, most thoughtful, honest and knowledgeable person. I considered it an honor to have stayed up all night with him monitoring the Spencer’s retention pond on the Big Cottonwood Creek in case the spring runoff was more than the pond could hold back. Volunteers’ were on standby ready to sandbag the creek if the run off was more than the pond could hold. We used the Utah-Shake-Out to help us have a hands-on experience in practice for an emergency in Holladay. These are just a few examples of life-changing adventures we shared. It was great to attend training seminars and participate in workshop scenarios. He strived to have the skills and knowledge to guide and direct people to do the greatest good for the greatest number when the big one hits.

Ladder Safety

By Capt. Dan Brown, Unified Fire Authority As fall presses forward, many of us will use ladders to hang holiday decorations or clean leaffilled gutters. Here are some safety tips to keep you safe when using ladders: 1. Use a ladder that is suitable for the task and your weight.

2. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety warnings: right height for job, nonslip feet, no signs of warping, rust or corrosion, no missing parts, placed on level, firm footing, and securely locked and braced into place.

3. Make sure there are no power lines or exposed electrical wiring near the ladder. Never use ladders during storms, or in rainy or windy weather.

4. Lean the ladder against a wall at a ratio of 4:1 to stop it from falling over. For example, if the ladder is 12 feet tall, place the foot of the ladder 3 feet from the wall.

5. When climbing a ladder: always wear enclosed slip-resistant shoes or boots, have someone hold the ladder at the base, climb up the center of the ladder, holding it with both hands, maintain a minimum of three points of contact on the ladder, carry tools in a tool belt, and never stand on the tread immediately below the top cap as you may lose your balance.

6. When working on a ladder: always grip the ladder with one hand, work within arm’s reach of the ladder, if you can’t easily reach what you need to, climb down and safely reposition the ladder, and be careful when pulling items from shelves, gutters or roofs, as this may cause you to lose balance.

7. Be mindful of your own individual circumstances. Do not use a ladder if you are affected by medication or a health condition that may cause you to lose balance. Avoid using a ladder if you are alone or cannot get help in the case of an accident.

LEAF CLEAN-UP The September wind storm wreaked havoc on the trees in Holladay and the debris fallen into the canals made these facilities unusable for a time. Thank you to all who pitched in to help clear out the fallen debris. As leaves continue to fall during the autumn season, they need to be raked and properly disposed of. Raking and dumping leaves at the curb or into the canals and creeks result in additional maintenance for the City to remove them downstream. The clogged grate in the picture was recently taken in Holladay and shows how leaves can buildup and block waterways.

From more to less—amendment caps density in central neighborhood

I

n October, the Holladay City Council approved a unique redistricting amendment that precludes increased density in an 8.3-acre area in the heart of the city abutting the Holladay Village Zone. The Richards Amendment, as it’s known, called so for Holly and Clark Richards who spearheaded the effort, changes their neighborhood district from Medium-Density Residential Stable district (MDR-S) to a Low-Density Residential Stable district (LDR-S).

Before, the MDR-S allowed up to 16 units per acre. Now the LDR-S designation caps density at five units per acre.

The area consists of 23 parcels of mostly single-family homes in the vicinity of Kentucky Avenue and Clearview, between the So-Ho food truck area and the Holladay Village, an area that was designated as a low-density district prior to the city’s General Plan overhaul in 2016.

“This decision is pro neighborhoods. It serves what our neighborhood needs. This is about preservation and keeping ‘Holladay’ Holladay,” said Holly Richards, spokeswoman for the applicants. Richards is a longtime advocate for preservation in the city, beginning with her efforts to appeal conceptual site plans for initial Holladay Village designs. “In many places, our General Plan refers to the historic and unique nature of our community, but if we push too much development we’re not going to be unique,” Richards said.

Although, the planning department does not believe the Richards Amendment is in the best interest of the city, and says it unduly hampers the city’s ability to offer a “transitional option” for the areas surrounding the Holladay Village zone. City planners believe there needs to be a “buffer” area between high- and low-density areas, which would give future developments a transitional quality moving out from the Village, where density can reach 64 units an acre.

“Removing the flexibility of options pertaining to future development decision making or responding to growth pressure (if any), is not an envisioning plan” intended by the General Plan, according to the planning department’s staff report.

The staff indicate worry that the amendment precludes the city’s abil-

ity to be nimble in the face of future growth pressure, and that the neighborhood was designated an MDR-S district in 2016 as a “planning tool for anticipating inherent social changes that inevitably occurs over time.”

Staff argue MDR-S can accommodate pressures without jeopardizing the qualities that make the area unique and desirable.

The amendment petitioners see it differently.

“This neighborhood has been around long before the Village Center. It’s not like they were planning for a new city like Daybreak. I know the General Plan wants to allow options, but it also talks about respecting historic, established areas. It’s almost like they’re talking out both sides of their mouth. So, I’m glad they listened to us, but we know in this city you have to fight for [preservation], otherwise the developers will prevail,” Richards said.

During the October vote, the council expressed sympathy for the logic of both the applicants and the city staff, ultimately siding with the Richards while still expressing worry that the precedent it might set if low-density redistricting petitions started to trend, especially in areas abutting mixed-use zones.

“I don’t object to changing it from MDR-S, but I didn’t think going all the way back to LDR-S was appropriate because it didn’t allow a buffer. I’d be more supportive if the change were to MDR-T,” said councilmember Paul Fotheringham, suggesting a compromise zone somewhere between.

“I’m nervous about doing this in any other place, because we don’t have the land and we’ll have to expand [eventually],” said councilmember Drew Quinn, who nonetheless sided with the Richards’ neighborhood.

Councilmember Matt Durham seconded Quinn’s opinion. “In ways I think this change is a little premature, but I do understand the desires of the neighbors in that areas,” said councilmember Durham, who also voted in support.

The Richards Amendment passed by a 5 to 1 margin.

At the same council meeting, the city discussed other options for addressing housing pressures beyond

a simple decision between either Medium or Low density, including a newly proposed Residential Infill zone (RI) amendment that promotes single-family homes with less square footage than traditional Holladay bungalows.

One of the city’s biggest proponents of the RI are Ron and Melissa Hilton, who’ve sought multiple avenues for bringing smaller-sized home options to Holladay.

“I hope the RI gets passed because I think it’s a good solution for the city in general. It allows for reasonable growth in areas where there are few options for people that want to live in a great community but don’t want a McMansion,” Hilton said.

The RI allows for a higher density than traditional neighborhoods in the city but nonetheless retains the same single-family character.

However, the trade-off to increase the housing stock is a lower vertical profile but tighter horizontal quarters.

While some in the council disliked the zone’s allowance for higher levels of impervious surface, others agreed it could be viable in buffer areas segueing from denser mixed-use hubs, like the Holladay Village.

The council declined to institute the RI zone, but were not ready to dismiss the option entirely, so they tabled the topic with intentions to revisit it in 2021.

“There may be some appetite for it at some point in the future, because staff thinks it’s nice to have as many tools in the toolbox as we can,” Fotheringham said.

Even as people like the Hiltons and the Richards, both members of a “buffer” community, may see the issue of transition differently, they are uniform in their appreciation of Holladay.

“This area is a good place for this type of RI zone. And I know that a lot of other people want the same thing.

I still want a small home for myself, and I still want to stay in Holladay,” Ron Hilton said.

Holly Richards said, “I’m fond of this city. I love it. I don’t want to be anywhere else but where I am right now, so the preservation of that uniqueness is precious to me. And someone after me is probably going to appreciate the same feeling.” l

Olympus football finishes strong, gears up for another playoff run

By Josh McFadden | j.mcfadden@mycityjournals.com The Olympus football team came up just short of winning a third-straight region title, but the Titans have some momentum heading into the Class 5A state tournament.

Olympus finished the regular season with a 4-1 mark in Region 6 and 6-4 record overall. The Titans finished in the standings behind Brighton, which went 3-0, playing fewer games due to COVID-19-caused cancellations.

Brighton handed Olympus its only region loss, a 21-14 decision on Sept. 11.

The second-place finish in region play ended Olympus’ run atop the league. The Titans were undefeated region champions in 2019 and 2018—years when they also advanced in the state tournament. Olympus fell in the quarterfinals last year and in the semifinals two seasons ago.

Despite the disappointment of not winning region again, Olympus appears primed for more playoff success. The team rode a threegame winning streak into the tournament.

The Titans blew out Hillcrest 59-0 on Oct. 2, followed by a 30-7 triumph over Class 6A foe West Jordan on Oct. 9. Olympus concluded the regular season with a 28-21 victory over archrival Skyline on Oct. 16.

The win over Skyline was a thriller.

The two teams were tied at 21-21 when Olympus quarterback Tommy Hoggan plunged across the goal line with just 5 seconds to play.

It was part of a 14-point fourth quarter for the Titans. Hoggan also connected with Peyton Rice on a 4-yard touchdown earlier in the period to put Olympus up 21-14.

The Titans were 3-4 entering the final three-game stretch but hit their stride at the right time. The victories helped to propel the team to a No. 8 seed and a first-round bye in the tournament. Olympus will play ninth-seeded Timpview on Oct. 30 in the second round.

A balanced rushing attack was key in Olympus’ season. Three players had more than 240 yards on the ground, led by Johnny Frank’s 382. He also paced the Titans with seven touchdowns. Ryan Reynard added 328 yards rushing and did so on just 26 carries, a 12.6 yards-percarry average. Rice had 242 yards and four touchdowns and led the squad with 24 catches for 200 yards. Hoggan threw for just under 1,000 yards and had 11 touchdown passes during the regular season.

As it has been the past few season, the Olympus defense was strong once again this year. Josh VandenAkker put together some impressive stats with six sacks and more than 50 tackles. Erik Pederson and Matt Herron each added four sacks, while James Smith was the team leader with a pair of interceptions.

Olympus football’s Tommy Barrus receives national recognition

I

n a Friday night game versus Riverton, Olympus right guard Tommy Barrus made an outstanding block to clear the path for teammate Ryan Reynard’s 66-yard touchdown run.

Although the Titans lost in a nail-biting finish, this play would result in much more than a Titan touchdown.

In 2018, the NFL announced the “Way to Play Award” following the success of its educational series of the same name. The goal of both the award and preceding series has been to create a new culture in football that emphasizes the safety of players. The League recognizes one high school player each week that exemplifies the goals of the initiative.

Barrus was announced as the Week 5 recipient of the award on Oct. 10, 2020 on “Good Morning Football.” Host Michael Robinson, a former Seattle Seahawk, was full of praise for Barrus’ form.

“I love how he leads with his hands and takes his helmet out of the play,” said Robinson. “This big guard just pancakes the linebacker. I love this, especially being a former fullback.”

The Way to Play initiative focuses on safety, specifically in tackling and blocking form.

The campaign’s slogan, “Knees bent. Pads down. Head up and out,” describes the safest way players can approach a tackle or block.

This initiative comes in response to complaints regarding former professional football players suffering from degenerative brain diseases. One way to attack this issue head on is to do just the opposite—keep players heads out of the play. Leagues of all ages have been enforcing strict penalties on players that use the crown of their head in a tackle.

lineman. Using correct form is how he is able to compete against opponents that are 50-100 pounds heavier than him.

“I think that technique is more important for me than most of the other players on the field, just because I don’t have the size to make up for a lack of technique,” said Barrus.

When Barrus entered the 2020 football season, he certainly was not expecting national recognition for a play made in a varsity game.

After finishing up the lacrosse season, he shifted his focus to football. The first week of practice he realized he would be the Titan’s starting right guard.

Following a season as a member of the sophomore team, he found himself a sudden starter on this year’s Titan’s varsity roster. After looking up to last year’s Olympus High standouts Emerson Comlon and Lucas Spillett, he was now expected to fill that spot.

“It was definitely a shock to the team when Emerson left as a three-year starter. I had to step it up and fill some big shoes,” said Barrus.

Barrus knows that he would not have this national recognition without looking up to those two influential players. Barrus was able to watch Comlon, one of the best guards in the state, to learn proper form.

Coming off a big announcement, Barrus is still focused on the games ahead. As the Titans trained to take on Skyline, Barrus was centered on the game—preparing for what he knew would be a close match up. At the end of the day, Barrus was surprised and humbled to receive an award in a position that often gets overlooked.

“It’s pretty sweet, especially for the linemen,” he said. “It’s not often that we get recognized for something like this.” l

Sign stealing a sign of the times

By Zak Sonntag | z.sonntag@mycityjournals.com Tensions are ratcheting up across the country as the nation bears down on a pivotal presidential election, which has (little surprise) unearthed to polarized status of American public opinion. Most of the crossfire gets channeled through social media, in snarky Facebook posts and anonymous derogatory jabs in the comment section beneath YouTube videos. But the battle for ideological influence has moved beyond the exchange of words in the City of Holladay where the theft of political signs is disconcertingly commonplace.

“This is theft and destruction of private property. It’s an attempt to suppress speech and the vote. It’s confusing because that’s exactly what both parties say they want to protect,” said Paul Draper, third-generation Holladay resident who had his “Vote Democrat” sign run over by motor vehicles— twice—only to be later stolen. “I don’t think anyone of any party should condone theft of any kind.”

The problem has been building slowly since spring, when complaints about flag and sign stealing started to trickle through social media sites, including Next Door.

The phenomenon now appears commonplace, and it continues to provoke a gamut of emotions in residents who are left feeling

confused, scared, saddened and angry.

“It’s unbelievable what the political climate is like right now. My wife and I were mostly angry, because we’re big supporters of LGBTQ issues and our pride flag was stolen right off our house. They had to tear it down and they actually ripped down one of our wood panels in the process,” said Bill DeBirk, a commercial and residential inspector who has lived in Holladay for the past five years. “So we decided we needed to install a Ring security camera.”

Sign bandits have left no political-leaning untouched. Endorsements for both liberal and conservative issues have been tampered with or taken, and there is concern it may chill political speech as some residents have expressed on social media a new fearfulness of placing signs on their property.

The issue has also sparked distrust, “disgust” and accusations, with posts on Next Door inveighing against the “scummy” behavior and “cowards” perpetrating it.

Still, most victims of theft have not stood down and have even become emboldened.

daughters, and we wanted to show them that we don’t need to be scared, and if someone tries to intimidate us then we hit back with a positive message and a positive force.”

Draper, who studied political rhetoric, believes “they’re not getting what they want by stealing the signs.” Draper now works as an internationally recognized magician, so he’s never had difficultly making things reappear. “I put signs right back up. All this has made me do is spend more money on the Biden campaign to get more signs, so clearly they haven’t achieved what they want,” Draper said.

Anecdotal accounts suggest this year has seen a greater abundance of yard signs as political topics have become more mainstream in an age of technological connection. One of the most displayed signs this year has been “Black Lives Matter.”

Last June, following the upheaval over the death of George Floyd, an African American killed by police in Minneapolis, a Holladay resident named Alex Pedersen decided to print Black Lives Matter signs to distribute at cost.

“They were so popular I quickly ran out, and so I did an additional printing and those went fast too,” Pedersen told the Holladay Journal last June. “I think the signs were popular because this issue cuts across the political spectrum.”

Although, it didn’t unify the entire spectrum, as one man arrived to purchase a

sign and admitted, “This is going to piss my neighbor off really well.”

It appears that the man’s neighbor was not the only one to disapprove, because Pedersen has since received calls for sign replacements. Pedersen spoke with the Journal again in October.

“It’s an identity politics thing and it’s getting worse. I’m frustrated, but at the same time it’s understandable considering the political climate we live in,” said Pedersen, who first became involved with political issues in Utah County, where he started a chapter of Food Not Bombs, a volunteer movement that helps recover discarded food to be distributed to the hungry.

Despite how widespread the issue appears, the Holladay police have received only a “handful” of complaints.

“We just aren’t getting many reports on this. Maybe people think, ‘Oh, it’s just a yard sign.’ Maybe there’s more sentimental value than cost value so they decide not to report it. But if we don’t get the calls, how are we supposed to investigate it? And if it’s an ongoing issue we want to investigate it,” said Chief Justin Hoyal of the Holladay precinct.

Draper said, “I called the police, but I think it’s a cat-up-a-tree call. They did everything they were supposed to do. They listened to the full story. They took footage from my security camera. But in the end I CJ think it’ll be just another data point.” l

Keeping the brain happy

A

s more of us are working and learning from home, it’s important to keep in mind how our brains stay happy and efficient. Years of psychology research (traced back to the late 1700s) has shown us that our brains do well in states: the particular mode or condition that the brain is in at a specific time.

Whether we are learning or working from home, it’s important to keep the locations in which our brains are active separate from the spaces in which they aren’t.

State-dependent memory has been defined as the phenomenon in which the retrieval of a memory is most effective when an individual is in the same state of consciousness as when the memory was formed. Psychologists have determined that state-dependent learning can help or hinder our brains while learning new things, emphasizing where and how we learn new information is important. Further, recalling that information is easier if our brains are in the same location with similar stimuli.

A common recommended study habit related to state-dependent learning is to study in the same room where a test will occur (Godden, Baddeley, Goldstein, etc.).

One recommendation I commonly share to explain state-dependent learning concerns smell. I’m sure we have all been surprised by a memory experience related to that sense.

These experiences are commonly retold as: I smelled a food my family used to make when I was little and remembered a moment from my childhood. While we still aren’t completely sure why smell has such a strong relation to memory (Chen, Proust, Herz, etc.), we can utilize this knowledge for our own learning.

Do you remember scented pens (pens that exude different smells, commonly fruity, depending on the color of the ink)?

Before the current age of technology, students were recommended to use a different pen for each class, so the subject-specific smell would help the brain recall information specific to that class or subject and further help learning. (Sniffin’ Sticks research by Tekeli, Larsson, Rumeau, Liu, Besser, etc.)

Outside of learning, our brains typically like separations of states. As phones, and other screens, have become more and more prevalent, researchers (Hawse, Chang, Duffy, Aeshbach, etc.) discovered that the brain activity associated with being on a screen was not conducive for relaxation or sleep. Now, the National Sleep Foundation recommends putting screens away for at least an hour before going to bed.

The simple idea of separating brain states can be applied to broader areas of our lives. A common recommendation is to separate work and relaxation states. This means don’t work from your bed (Hammerness, Moore, Miller, etc.). If possible, separate your workspace from your sleep space, at the very least. If possible, I always recommend setting some sort of work or office space outside of the room that you sleep in.

Before the pandemic, as I was trying to incorporate this idea of brain states more into my life, I set a rule for myself that I would not work at home (unless absolutely necessary). A few weeks into it, I noticed that once I entered my designated workspace, my brain turned on and got focused faster and easier. I didn’t have to convince myself to get to work.

Now with the pandemic, embodying brain states has been more difficult. I spent some time a few months back setting up a workspace in my home. It’s as far away from my relaxation space as possible, and it’s near a window (natural light is also important for our brain and circadian rhythms).

State-dependent memory does not only apply to location and space, but to the state of the body and brain as well. States may include variables like being under an influence, (Hoine, Bremer, and Stern), intensity and type of mood or emotion (Reus, Post, and Weingartner), and pain (Pearce, Isherwood, Hrouda, and Radulovic, Jelena, Lee, Royce), among others.

Whether we are learning or working from home, state separation is important. In keeping our workspace strictly for work, and our relaxation space saved for relaxation, our brains become happier and healthier. l

Falling Apart

Well, 2020 finally broke me. I’m overwhelmed, worried about COVID, stressed about the election, climate change, immigration and poverty, and disillusioned to learn Ellen DeGeneres is an actress. It feels like someone shook Pandora’s Box 2.0 like a maraca, releasing sadness, greed and hubris.

I started this column dozens of times, but it feels like my funny is numb. I’d begin writing but devolve into an angry rant where I’m pounding the keyboard like a furious Elton John. I’ve gone feral.

During yoga, I asked my students for advice on how to find my funny. They suggested sharing recipes for Doomsday Survival beverages like Meltdown Mimosas and Disaster Daquiris. I’m afraid if I start researching drinks, I’d sober up around Groundhog Day. (If there is a Groundhog Day in 2021.)

I’m run through a gamut of feelings, enough emotions to create a second or third generation of Snow White’s Seven Dwarfs. I start each day with Hangry then work my way through Weepy, Lonely, Screamy, Worry, Panic and Gloomy. My husband never knows which Peri he’ll bump into when we pass in the hall. It makes everyday discussions a bit wobbly.

Hubbie: What sounds good for dinner?

Me: We’re on a spinning planet, slowly moving toward the sun where we’ll be consumed like a fly in a bug zapper.

Hubbie: So . . . enchiladas?

Americans are resilient, right? We’ve been through tough times, right?

We’ll come together and make the best decisions for our country . . . oh, who am I kidding?

I started screaming at the moon every night like some kind of demon weredog. I’m sure my neighbors are terrified. (Sidenote: I hope someone who’s been living in a bunker since Y2K finally emerged this year to see if it’s safe to come out. Joke’s on them.)

My meditation practice has become a slow descent into madness.

But then.

I zoom in close and watch my grandkids teach a disinterested dog to roll over. I see myriad kindnesses in my life like chocolate, warm blankets and Disaster Daquiris. I zoom out and witness this beautiful world with its billions of people just doing the best they can. Compassion is abundant.

I talk to the trees (literally). I smell pumpkin spice (everywhere). I hike through gorgeous canyons, watching leaves release their grip on branches and freefall to the ground. The stillness settles my thoughts.

I don’t know if you’ll read this before or after the election. I don’t know if we’re facing martial law, a presidential coup or (finally) an alien invasion.

But I know optimism feels better than despair.

We can continue to Catastrophe Scroll though vile social media posts, created by friendless trolls with no sense of humor and a serious case of ringworm, or we can turn off our phones and relearn what “community” means.

One day soon, we’ll have to acknowledge the friendships we’ve lost, the unnecessary arguments we waged and the times we refused to back down. It will be a political hangover of epic proportions, especially if you’ve been drinking Calamity Cosmopolitans.

Those who follow my social media platforms know where I stand politically, and it’s easy to look at the rage in the world and point fingers at The Other Side.

I can stop the blame game, but I won’t stop calling for equality, justice and inclusion in places it doesn’t exist. We must remember that Hope remained in Pandora’s Box. It’s our job to nurture it.

ENGINEER RETURNS TO THANK ENGAGING CHURCHILL SCIENCE TEACHER

H

ave you ever thought about going back to thank a teacher? The one who inspired you or just made the subject fun? Sarah Mills Snell decided to do that after she graduated from BYU with a degree in mechanical engineering, and got a job working with crash test dummies at Autoliv in Ogden.

“Brian LeStarge was my eighth-grade science teacher at Churchill Jr. High. He was an engaging teacher and got excited about things. Everyone has one of those teachers, I think, whose love of the subject makes you love the subject,” Snell said.

Snell had originally thought about different career paths, but science wasn’t on her radar. “Mr. LeStarge taught us that if you can get through the paper stuff, the theory of how things work, then you can do the exciting things! You can do experiments and play with things and see how they work in real life,” Snell said.

So, she decided after nearly a decade to go back and tell LeStarge what an impact his teaching had had on her life. “I went back to his room one day after school was over. I said, ‘I want you to know that you were the spark of what I ended up doing in college and beyond.’”

Snell said being in the classroom again brought back memories—the setup was the same, and it still had that science lab smell.

“He was really surprised. I was just one student from 10 years ago. I think he was blown away that someone would want to come back and talk to him.
