orty people were honored at the Holladay City Council meeting on April 21. They all took part in investigating and bringing down a major burglary ring along the Wasatch Front.

Unified Police Officers and other support staff were honored with a Letter of Commendation and the Division Commander Ribbon.

"There was so much work that went into this," Justin Hoyal, the precinct chief of Unified Police Department, said. "Honestly, it paid off huge dividends because these individuals were plaguing not only Holladay but all across the Wasatch Front. We have cases from a guy in Utah County and another up in Davis County. These guys really were busy doing burglaries, and we're seeing the fruits of that pay off now."

County Sheriff Rosie Rivera, who is also Chief of the Unified Police Department, joined Hoyal in recognizing the individuals.

"I'm so proud of everybody, but they make me proud every single day," Rivera said. "I know that I said it multiple times because they constantly make us proud."

UPD Rivera explained an advantage of the UPD model, which is shared resources.

"One of the unique pieces of UPD is, as you can see, you have a Holladay chief and a pair of chiefs from Midvale and Kearns, who got together to allow folks to participate. That's the benefit. We get Continued page 10

Bonneville Jr. High Dance Society, its first at school in 10 years, to perform May 12

tudents at Bonneville Jr. High waited a long time for a dance team.

“The former dance teacher retired years ago, but was never replaced. Time went on, and then the pandemic happened, and we just didn’t have a team,” said Carrie Peterson, whose daughter Jessie is a seventh grader at Bonneville.

Peterson, who has a BFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah, was sad the students didn’t have that opportunity at school.

“All the other junior highs in the district dance. For those who can’t do private studio lessons, if they want to dance in high school, they are really behind their peers,” Peterson said.

Bonneville got a new administrator, Jen Johnson, for the 2021-22 school year. Peterson saw that as the perfect opportunity to go to bat for her daughter and ask again about a dance program.

“I wanted to have a dance team so much.

When my mom came back from meeting with Ms. Johnson, she said, ‘It looks like we’re going to do dance at Bonneville this year!’”

Jessie said.

Jessie’s friend Charlotte Smith said the two of them wrote letters asking for a dance team. “We also worked on choreographing our own dance—we just needed to do something!”

When Johnson gave a cautious yes (working around lingering Covid precautions) Jessie remembers being “so happy she could cry.” Charlotte’s mom Josette Smith and Peterson were hired as co-instructors, and the dance society started meeting on Friday afternoons.

The society is open to everyone and has 19 members. They work on understanding space, time and energy. They’ve learned to trust each other while they express themselves. For some, it was a natural fit. For oth-

ers it’s been a growing experience.

“Choreography is the best thing about dance. I’m a theatre kid, so this is just another way to express myself. I love being creative, making things up and following the energy of the music,” said CeCe Christy.

For Timmy Hsiao, dance started as a time-filler. “I was looking for something to do on Friday afternoons. I’m busy the other days of the week with sports. Someone said I should come do dance, even though I had never done it before. It’s been a lot of fun. I like the art of choreography and making things up.”

Peterson and the others love having Timmy in the group. He has a great attitude and is willing to try new things. He’s the only male student on the team, but they think he’ll lead the way for others to join.

“I’ve been so impressed with these kids.

They come ready to dance and ready to work.

They are learning new things, and being kind to each other as they express themselves,” Peterson said.

Peterson said this isn’t only a place for students who have danced their whole lives.

“One of the most important things was to get people here who haven’t taken dance before, and that’s about 85% of our group,” Peterson said.

The society found an ideal supporter in Johnson. “I worked at Taylorsville High and Kearns High before I came here, and I coached the drill team. I also studied with Ballet West,” Johnson said.

With the pandemic impacting students in so many ways, Johnson supports anything that gives her students a way to connect back with the school. The society is doing exactly that.

Members of the group said they’ve strengthened friendships and gotten outside of their comfort zones at Friday rehearsals.

“I like coming together as a group. I feel like we’re united when we’re dancing,” said student Lizette Blandon.

“Dancing is a big part of my life. When I’m in dance, I feel like I’m where I belong,” Mia Call said.

“This is a safe place, and it’s easy to make friends here. I’ve made new friends and become closer to the ones I already had,” said Jessie.

Some are rediscovering the fun they had dancing as small kids. “I took dance when I was three or four years old, but then stopped.

Since the dance society started at school, I’m dancing again. I get to show my emotions and have fun,” said team member Hasti Yazdani.

Olympus students learn work skills in internship program

W

hen Paul Arkilo’s family moved to Utah from Venezuela two years ago, the last thing he thought he’d been doing as a student at Olympus High is teaching his fellow students. But because of the internship program at Olympus, Arkilo was able to “try out” teaching as a career and see if it was a good fit for him.

“I had a hole in my class schedule and talked with my counselor to see if there was anything other than a traditional class I could do during that time,” Arkilo said.

His counselor asked about his interests and told him about the internship program.

“I’d wanted to teach, but I’d also been thinking about doing something in the field of nutrition,” Arkilo said.

It was fine that, like many students, Arkilo hadn’t decided what he wants to do for a career. The point of the internship is to try things out. If a student leaves a position realizing that they don’t want that career, that’s a win, too.

“Say a student takes hospitality classes at school and thinks they want to be in that industry. We could get them an internship somewhere like the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake.

“They would intern there for 40 hours.

At the end they might think, ‘Yes, that’s for me,’ or, ‘No, I didn’t like that.’ Either outcome is good because now they save time and money and sharpen their focus,” said Erin Gubler, Internship Development Specialist at Olympus.

In Arkilo’s case, his counselor considered his Spanish (his native language) and English skills. He became an intern at Olympus teaching AP Spanish with teacher Mike Kraniski.

“I really liked it. Mr. Kraniski and I talked about the lesson plans. We took turns teaching. It was strange to be in a position of authority with my peers, but I think they respected me because I knew the subject,” Arkilo said.

Arkilo enjoyed the energy in the classroom, and it helped him see education from the other side. Now it’s easier for him to approach his teachers if he has questions.

Kraniski loved the experience. “The internship program is truly incredible.

Paul, as I always say, is an inspiration and the best of the best as a person, future educator and student,” Kraniski said.

Gubler and Olympus counselor Susannah Wixom coordinate the internship program. Students must have taken a CTE content class and be a junior or senior.

Then they attend an orientation.

During the course, they are paired with a mentor at a business. They create a LinkedIn account and do 40 hours of onsite work. When it’s over, they give a pre-

sentation about their experience.

“If a student needs an internship in education like Paul [Arkilo], that’s easy.

We have students that have internships at Rosecrest Elementary and Driggs Elementary,” Gubler said.

“We’d really like to have a variety of businesses let our students do internships with them. We’ve had great experiences with local companies like the JSMB and Intermountain Healthcare’s TOSH room at Olympus,” Gubler said.

TOSH gave Hallee Chamberlain and Hallie Zimmerman physical and sports therapy internships. Chamberlain posted a picture of the two of them doing their jobs.

“This is the TOSH room at Olympus High school…where injuries are evaluated and treated. I love that I get to learn new things every day and intern in something I am very interested in doing as a career!”

Chamberlain wrote.

Kate Richards did an internship with second-grade teacher Jessica Gygi at Rosecrest Elementary.

“I have been helping the students with their class assignments and made connections with the kids. That has been my

favorite part. I loved every second of my internship,” Richards said.

Internship connections also benefit the school and can directly shape curriculum.

“One of our partners Jerry Glaser at Revo Technologies in Murray gave us amazing feedback about what was going on in the IT world. He told us what was most helpful for a student’s background.

Now our computer science class is a better fit to train students,” Wixom said.

“We love to have businesses partner with Olympus High, and we think it’s a benefit to the business, too. Students who intern make connections and are better prepared to enter the work force,” Wixom said.

Other businesses that worked with Olympus include Jiffy Lube, BMW repairs department and preschools.

“These are great students, and I know we have a great future coming up in them.

epresentatives of the Utah Boys Volleyball Association had sat in meetings with the Utah High School Activities Association before—over the past four years in a formal fashion. So, when the UHSAA board again put the sanctioning of boys volleyball to a vote, the UBVA members braced themselves. They had been here before, and had walked out disappointed every time. Yet, on this day, March 24, 2022, it would finally be the outcome they had wanted when their organization was formed in 2015.

After decades of boys playing the sport in Utah, boys volleyball is official, and with a 10-4 vote, will now be a UHSAA-sanctioned sport beginning in the 2023-24 school year, joining the ranks with 25 other states nationwide.

“We had a lot more hope and momentum this time, but it was so surreal to sit there and hear it announced. We were just in shock,” said UBVA co-founder Jill Davis.

This latest attempt at sanctioning laid 10,000 signatures in front of the UHSAA board along with written support from local politicians, including Norm Thurston of the Utah House of Representatives, who was in attendance at the meeting, to BYU athletic director, Tom Holmoe, BYU men’s volleyball coach Shawn Olmstead and USA national men’s volleyball coach John Speraw.

UHSAA assistant director Jan Whittaker said, “The UHSAA is excited to be sanctioning boys’ volleyball for the 2023-24 schools year.

This will allow many boys who have not been competing in a sport for their school the opportunity to be part of the high school sports experience. They will be able to benefit from the positive impact that high school athletics has on students.”

“This is really exciting and satisfying for the boys to have this opportunity,” said Skyline head coach Josh Henderson, who has been with the program for nine years, six as head varsity coach.

“I am really excited the boys will finally have a chance to truly represent their high school and will be able to play at the school, not only in front of family and friends but in front of a student section. Being able to practice at the high school gives the sport more legitimacy and makes it more appealing for boys to want to play. Sanctioning boys volleyball really is a great way to inform people that volleyball isn’t just a ‘girl sport,’ but that volleyball is for everyone.”

Olympus High boys volleyball club director Brett Peterson said, “I am extraordinarily excited for the boys. This sport is growing extraordinarily and we anxiously await the day when sanctioning begins. There is something special about playing in your high school, and these boys will not only no longer have to play

in junior high schools and other random places, but also don’t have to listen to friends say that it’s not a real sport because it’s not sanctioned.”

Davis said, “It’s a wonderful sense of accomplishment and it was an honor to be in the seat. A lot of people told us it wouldn’t happen, but our grassroots efforts and the community support made this happen. This is a victory for everybody, especially the boys and their families.”

Davis has helped spearhead the UBVA’s effort the past few years to get the sport sanctioned. Her sons, Parker and Price, were part of a Bingham High boys volleyball program who three-peated in state titles from 2017 to 2019.

She, UBVA co-founder Warren Van Schalkwyk and Duke Mossman, who coaches at Wasatch High, formed a collaborative effort of continually gathering statistics and surveying coaches statewide to keep up with the growing interest and participation in the sport.

What they found was: • Boys volleyball is one of the fastest growing sport in high schools across the nation.

• Boys volleyball is one of the largest club sports in Utah. In 2015, the state had 24 club teams; last fall, that number was up to 56.

• In 2019, 81 high school teams represented 56 schools in Utah. This year, 122 high school teams are playing from 64 schools with more than 1,500 boys competing.

• More than half of those 64 high school teams had such a demand in numbers that coaches had to cut players at tryouts due to popularity of the sport and lack of facilities.

• Most of the 5A and 6A schools have full teams with the 3A and 4A classifications having a more mixed representation and the more rural schools in 1A and 2A coming in with the lowest participation rates.

• 53% of the boys volleyball programs pay for gym rentals from their schools in order to play and practice.

• 90% of participants statewide just play boys volleyball and are not multi-sport athletes.

“The push that Jill stayed on to make was really key,” Corner Canyon High boys volleyball director Dan Penrod said. “Over this long process, there have always been a few parents that wanted to get the sanctioning ball rolling, but when their boys were finished playing, the momentum died down. Jill staying on after her boys graduated was everything in making sure this happened.”

Whittaker noted how the Emerging Sports Program that the UHSAA formed three years ago played a key role in the sanctioning of boys volleyball. “That program was created to grow meaningful participation opportunities for student-athletes, particularly for female student-athletes, in sports and activities,” she said.

“A sport can be considered for sanctioning after it meets a certain threshold of participating of our students in member schools. Boys participating in volleyball has steadily grown over the past few years.”

Whittaker said once boys volleyball had met initial criteria for sanctioning consideration the UHSAA Board of Trustees looked at several factors in the ultimate decision-making process including: • The impact on Title IX compliance • The percentage of member schools that facilitate interscholastic competition in the emerging sport • Participation in community-sponsored leagues for the sport • Whether other state high school athletic associations sponsor or sanction competition in the sport • University, college and junior college opportunities for participation after high school • Whether the sport is a lifetime sport or activity, easily accessed in later life, that contributes to public health or fitness • Whether the NFHS or other recognized governing body publishes rules for interscho-

Dominic Burchett sworn in as Unified Fire Authority’s 14th fire chief

hen Dominic Burchett was sworn in as Unified Fire Authority’s 14th fire chief in the agency’s 100-year history, he took over the reins for Utah's largest fire agency, serving 15 communities from Emigration Canyon to Eagle Mountain.

His appointment follows the retirement of Dan Petersen, who served as fire chief since 2017, a man Burchett has worked with and respects.

“Chief Petersen taught me the value of collaboration,” Burchett said. “He helped me understand the value of working with partners and stakeholders, searching to find the best answers for the community.”

Burchett, a Utah native, has extensive fire experience that stems from more than 20 years serving Salt Lake County, most recently as assistant chief of support services.

He was responsible for the daily operations of fire prevention, IT, logistics, and special enforcement. He also led the seismic retrofitting of all UFA stations and helped with several station rebuilding projects.

His fire career began in 1997 when his brother, Matthew Burchett, took a seasonal wildland job with Salt Lake County.

“He came home dirty and stinky, and I was in,” Burchett said. “I was able to be outside and work with people I really respected.

I was with my brother and other people who were working hard. I followed wherever he would take me.”

When Matthew died in August 2018, working on a fire line of the Mendocino Complex Fire in California, Burchett lost his brother and best friend.

“We grew up incredibly close,” Burchett said. “The healing process for me was a lot of therapy and people helping me through it. I think because of him I was able to step outside my comfort zone. He’s there kind of guiding me down certain roads and I feel his presence in different situations.”

Over the years, Burchett has taken opportunities for growth that helped him step up the chain of leadership. He moved through the ranks as a firefighter, wildland specialist, paramedic, captain, and division chief.

As the new fire chief, Burchett has three main areas of focus; the health and well-being of fire personnel, understanding the communities served by UFA, and continuous improvement for himself and the agency.

Davis said that the sanctioning of boys

volleyball is a “win-win.” “This legitimizes it for the boys and creates stability and consistency across the board under a fabulous umbrella.

Scholarships are secondary,” she said. “Plus, county rec leagues can still function for those who were cut from their high school teams as well as those who just want to play.”

Davis, the former director of Bingham boys volleyball teams, has been gearing up to step away from UBVA since 2020 when her son graduated but “needed to stay in the game” to see the sanctioning process through. “Personally, to be able to serve these boys has been a thrill, and it’s an even bigger thrill to betting Utah on the map with boys volleyball,” she said. “I’ll forever be a part of the sport, but this ‘cherry on the top’ is so exciting for these kids and a great way to go out for me.”

“Jill is an absolute angel for doing all of that. She did an amazing job, and it means so much to the boys,” Peterson said.

Peterson, who has been directing the Olympus boys volleyball program for several years—with Ben Chamberlain coaching the varsity squad—said that he’s thrilled to have the boys experience sanctioned volleyball.

Peterson’s own experience was competing for two years in sanctioned play in California, and then helping build a club team at Olympus High, where he was a player/coach over his final two seasons, while his mom, Chris, ran the program.

Despite being the defending state champions, the Skyline Eagles program has experienced somewhat of a down year in participation and numbers due to starting a few weeks late with unavailable gym space. But, Henderson said the news of the sanctioning has brought a lot of buzz and extra interest and excitement to be involved in the program next year.

Henderson said that being able to practice at the school will be a game changer for his boys.

The UBVA will continue to host the state

boys volleyball tournament for the next two seasons as budgets, schedules and regional alignments are put in place for the 2024 spring season when UHSAA will take the reins.

he Cottonwood Community Network is hosting a family night at Cottonwood High School, 5715 S. 1300 East on May 12. The event runs 5-7 p.m. and is free of charge.

“This event is for everyone in our community, which is made up of all elementary and junior high schools that feed into Cottonwood High. We’re excited about this fun night,” said Cottonwood principal Terri Roylance.

There’s a barbecue dinner planned for the first 500 families who get there. There will be a bounce house, giant slide, games, entertainment and information on resources and events in the area. Transportation is available; contact your school for details.

The purpose of the night is to build a sense of community. Administrators have spent months organizing and coordinating all the different schools and events.

“We hope this will become an annual tradition that fosters community,” said Jen Johnson, principal of Bonneville Jr. High.

Holladay Artists of the Month age creatively

olladay has 11 Artists of the Month. Yes, 11. All are women, and all are enrolled in a creative aging class.

The artists have expressed themselves in writing and are now moving into a visual art phase. Their creations will hang in the Holladay City Hall front foyer at the beginning of May. Meeting Monday and Wednesday, this dynamic group is taught by Nan Seymour and Kandace Steadman. Seymour taught the writing portion of the course and Steadman the visual. The writing portion provided a safe space for the artists to share personal details of their lives.

“We also spend time each session in a grounding meditation and end with a poem being read aloud,” Steadman said. “In addition to individual writing and collages, we are collaborating in a group writing and group collage, creating individual and collective work. It has become a bonding experience through these shared activities.”

Student/artist Susan Mumford was eager to participate in the course. “After two years of COVID, the idea of meeting in person with other artists and writers was compelling,” she said. “I have not been disappointed.”

One of the artists in the class, Mandana Ghaffarian, was at first hesitant to enroll in the course. “With that in mind, I thought I better face my fear of writing and making art,” she said. Ghaffarian appreciated Seymour’s simple sentences as prompts. “I was amazed of the writing that showed up on my paper.”

Student Cecilie Mattison said that the course “has exceeded my wildest expectations” and “taking baby steps immediately put everyone at ease.” She further stated, “It proves you can teach old dogs new tricks.”

During the writing portion of the course taught by Seymour, the group agreed to be non-judgmental, open to what others had to share, take responsibility for the success of the group, offer their truths and practice self-care. “I remember” and “Praise” were two of the writing prompts used during the course.

Seymour is a poet and author of the collection, “Prayers not Meant for Heaven.” Additionally, she is the founder of a community writing practice called “River Writing.”

“The practice of writing at a shared table in a supported way can help people free themselves from the tyrannies of perfectionism and isolation,” Seymour said. She believes that the “gloriously imperfect creative process” has allowed the students to learn in a “warmly connected way.”

The visual portion of the course taught by Steadman features a workshop in collage.

“It doesn't require a steep investment in art supplies and is less intimidating than other art media,” Steadman said.

She has featured her own collages in juried shows and had a solo exhibition.

With a background in art history, Steadman has worked in museums, as an adjunct professor at Westminster College and as a curator of exhibitions.

The course has proven rewarding and helpful to both students and instructors. “I am motivated again to tap into my inner writer and artist and have been struggling out of a non-productive slump through this experience,” Mumford said.

“It might be trite to say,” Steadman said, “but hearts and minds have been opened and expanded!”

Letter of Commendation The Letter of Commendation reads: "On January 29, 2022, several burglaries were reported at The Station condos in Holladay. The Unified Police Department (UPD) was called to investigate the cases. Detectives from the UPD's Holladay Precinct began sifting through the evidence that was left behind by the suspect(s), including reviewing hours of video surveillance. Detectives worked tirelessly for two weeks on the case. With the assistance of other units at the UPD to include Forensics, Property and Evidence, Mental Health Unit, Major Investigations Unit, Midvale Precinct, and the Kearns Precinct, they were able to identify a primary suspect in the case, including 10 others who are involved.

Detectives served a search warrant at the suspect's home in West Jordan. They also served a simultaneous search warrant at a storage unit owned by the same suspect in West Jordan. During those search warrants, detectives recovered hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen property. This property included bicycles, power tools, ski equipment, firearms, sports memorabilia, dental equipment, construction equipment, and dozens of other types of items.

Detectives have spent many hours going through all the evidence collected and believe it has come from burglaries not only at The Station but all across Salt Lake County and beyond. Detectives identified several individuals who were victims of burglary by this suspect. We have been able to return a lot of property to these victims, but there was a large portion still outstanding. A phone line was set for the public to call and see if we had their belongings. Hundreds of phone calls were received at the Holladay Precinct.

The investigation continued, and another storage unit was identified, and more stolen property was recovered. Ultimately, the primary suspects were located in a stolen truck that was also full of stolen property. They were booked into jail, and coordination with the District Attorney's Office has been ongoing.

The team effort by UPD Precincts, Divisions, Shared Services, and others across UPD made this case successful. The incredible work put into this case stopped a very large theft/burglary ring all across the Wasatch Front. All these members are to be commended for their countless hours, at all hours of the day and night, of dedicated service to the citizens of our great communities in this case."

Home Rental ABCs

By Drew Quinn, District 4 Got an empty basement that you’re thinking about renting? A little extra income would certainly come in handy. But before you start advertising, read on to find out what is and is not allowed in the City of Holladay.

The length of time you plan to rent is the key. Long-term rentals, those that last 30 days or more, can provide new housing units that strengthen and diversify our city. They are allowed in all residential areas. In contrast, rentals that are for less than 30 days and attract vacation renters and those visiting only temporarily are limited to certain locations and highly regulated because they disrupt established neighborhoods.

Long-term rentals must be rented for a minimum of 30 consecutive days, and the property owner must live onsite.

Holladay residents who rent long-term should register their home as an accessory dwelling unit, or “ADU.” The requirements are designed to ensure the physical safety of the homeowner as well as the renter and are not difficult to meet. ADUs can contribute to needed housing within Holladay, responding to changing family needs, shrinking households, and increasing housing costs.

ADUs are permitted in all single-family residential areas of the city. An ADU apartment that has been registered with the city assures a potential renter that their new home is in compliance with building codes.

A residence that is rented for less than 30 days is classified as a short-term rental, or “STR.” Holladay prohibits short-term rentals in most of the city, including in all single-family zoned residential areas. STRs proposed in allowable areas are reviewed and considered by the Planning Commission via a permitting and licensing process. This policy may seem harsh, but just speak to someone who lives close to a home being rented for a night or two at a time and you will understand why.

People who stay for a short time have no stake in the community, and some do not care how the surrounding neighborhood may be disrupted by their activities. Most of Holladay’s residential streets are narrow and extra cars parked on the street close to a single house can cause traffic and parking problems for those who live in the neighborhood and their guests. Loud noise emanating from an STR, especially late at night, is another problem Holladay residents have complained about. In general, short-term rentals upset the peaceful enjoyment of long-standing neighborhoods.

Property owners who illegally operate a short-term rental bring commercial activity into neighborhoods that were built for the use of families and can decrease property values. Violation of the city ordinance prohibiting STRs is a Class B Misdemeanor and carries fines as well as requiring repayment of any rental income received during all periods of violation.

Renting extra space in your home by creating an ADU can bring you extra money and strengthen your neighborhood when it’s done right. If you’ve got questions about this process, please call the Community & Economic Development Department at 801-527-3890.

Long-awaited neighborhood road repairs and other improvements coming to Holladay in 2022!

With the increased tax dollars the City of Holladay is receiving, 3 contractors have been hired to add new asphalt (mill and overlay) on several neighborhood roads throughout the community. By the end of this construction season, 15% of the City-owned neighborhood roads will be in great shape! This is a huge milestone that marks only the beginning of a strategic plan to address Holladay’s aging roads and other infrastructure. If your street isn’t on the list for this year, know that more road projects are coming in subsequent years. If there’s a crew working on your road, here’s what you can expect: • Continued regular services, such as postal deliveries, and garbage or recycling pickup.

• Periodic driveway access restrictions (contractors are required to give residents advance notice) • Daytime work activities (sunrise to sunset) • Temporary lane closures and width restrictions • Detours to other routes • Increased noise, dust and vibration • Street parking limitations • Maintained public transportation • Temporary sidewalk closures • Restricted bicycle and pedestrian access • Work activities that are weather-dependent and subject to change In addition to the neighborhood road work, Highland Drive will be micro-surfaced and receive permanent lane markings soon! Plus, a new footpath/ pedestrian connection will be added on the west side of Highland Drive between Lakewood Drive and Walker Lane – this work began and should take two weeks to complete. The 3900 South Improvement project is also wrapping up a few final remaining work items, mostly centered around the intersection of 2700 East at 3900 South. Lastly, crosswalks in the Village area are also slated for repair, with work beginning in early May and taking about 3 weeks to complete. All of these improvements will help provide a better quality of life for all of us in Holladay!

GLASS RECYCLE BIN FINDS NEW HOME Since the bin was removed from City Hall Tree Committee member Cecilie Mattison has been working on finding a new home for glass recycling in our city and enlisting help to get it done.

The landlord of the Holladay Shopping Center on 1941 E Murray Holladay Rd stepped up and with the help of Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling a great partnership was formed.

Heat-Related Illness — Know the Signs and What to Do

By Captain Daniel Brown, Unified Fire Authority With summer coming, it’s important to be aware of heat related illnesses to prevent tragedy. According to the CDC, about 658 people die due to heat every year in the United States. One of the most important things you can do is STAY HYDRATED. Before I became a firefighter, I served in the Marine Corps and did a tour in Iraq, witnessing many heat related injuries and illnesses. I learned of the importance of hydrating to prevent heat exhaustion and even worse, heat stroke.

This means drinking plenty of water BEFORE you get thirsty and start sweating. If you know you will be going on a hike, working outside, or have any activities outdoors, start hydrating the day before and continue to drink water the day of the planned activity. If it is hot outside, take breaks, rest and cool down. Become familiar with the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and know what to do to help those in need.

If you are uncomfortable assessing any heat-related illness, call 911. Be Safe, Holladay!

Temporary Playground Closure NEW SURFACE COMING SOON! The playground at Holladay City Park, 4580 S. 2300 E., will close temporarily for 4 weeks, so crews can install a new rubberized playground surface – no more wood chips! A ritual that dates back centuries, spring cleaning has long been observed as a part of many traditions throughout history, including those during Passover, Lent, and Persian New Year, to name a few. If amid a season of renewal, you find yourself inspired to rejuvenate your space, consider implementing a few sustainable practices.

1. DONATE EXCESS Rather than discarding excess housewares, clothing, and appliances in a landfill, donate them instead. Schedule a trip to your local thrift store, or for the ultimate convenience factor, list items on an online marketplace or donation forum instead.

New Chief People Officer at NetBase Quid says listening is key to job

H

olladay resident Zach Pino is very personable. It could be his unusual gold eyes (he swears they seem to change colors) or his empathetic approach. Either way, as the new Chief People Officer at NetBase Quid, that’s a good skill to have.

Recently named to the position by San Francisco-based NetBase Quid, an AI consumer and market intelligence company, Pino is facing the challenge of managing a nearly 100% remote workforce.

Human resource management is not new to Pino who was previously Chief People Officer at DigiCert, Senior VP of People and Places at Ancestry.com and a director at eBay. Facing the “total paradigm shift” of a remote workforce, he said, “The biggest challenge is how you kind of replicate the informal nature of the office because it takes a fairly formal gesture if you’re remote to interact with someone. You have to hit them with Zoom.”

One of the challenges is that many businesses invested in their space because they wanted it to be a natural extension of their culture. This concept has diminished in recent years.

“It’s a new type of intimacy,” said Pino, who calls Holladay home now going on 12 years. “You see their homes and their spaces. It's hard because some people love it. Some people hate it. Some people are self-conscious, and you have to kind of figure out the challenge.”

Pino noted that even before the pandemic, the business world was changing. “Notions of what it means to be productive and be working, office attendance versus not, has changed,” he said. “And people were naturally, before the

last couple of years I think, taking a lot more control of their lives.”

He believes there’s no turning back. “We're not trying to figure out when and how we're going to bring people back into the office or how quickly or how flexible we're going to be,” he said. “We know there is no return-to-work day.”

Pino attended the University of Utah “though it took me longer than I needed to get my degree,” he said with a laugh.

He later obtained a certificate from Cornell in Human Resources Management.

He attributes much of his success to people who helped him along the way, and he makes sure to let those people know of their tremendous influence on him.

Though Pino is pleased with the thriving business environment in Utah, he also believes that there is often an unconscious bias against certain individuals. “I am very serious about doing my part to be an advocate and an ally and support people through,” he said. “They don’t need a head start or an unfair advantage. I think they just need a level playing field.”

Pino helps achieve a level playing field by listening.

“Always understand where they're coming from and realize that you're making assumptions that very well could be wrong and take the time to kind of sit back and learn and listen, and understand before moving into problem-solving, unconscious judgment modes or trying to help,” he said.

Former NBA coach hosting camp

tah native Barry Hecker, who coached in the NBA for more than two decades, continues to teach the game of basketball to young players. At the beginning of summer, he will host a camp June 7-10 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Sandy (location still to be determined) for boys and girls in third through ninth grades.

“These camps are all about the basic fundamentals of basketball,” Hecker said.

“We focus on quality fundamental instruction, we work hard with a lot of discipline and structure and we have a lot of fun. When these kids walk out of there, they know they’ve been taught and improved.”

“I don’t care who I coach or when I coach,” Hecker, who has worked with current Jazz players Mike Conley and Rudy Gay, said. “I simply enjoy teaching the game. It’s great to see a smile on someone’s face as they experience success. If you help somebody, you’ll be somebody.”

Hecker has conducted clinics all over the world for more than 40 years, including many since his retirement from coaching in the NBA. He said he particularly enjoys working with the youth.

“If you teach skills, that leads to confidence and that confidence can allow anyone to do anything they want,” he said. “I have more fun with young kids than with the pros. In the NBA, you have guys who are making millions and they don’t listen. These kids are making nothing and they’ll listen to you.” l

Investments of $30 million-plus tackle affordable housing, jobs and water conservation

I

n a response to the state’s housing crisis, the Salt Lake County Council recently approved $20 million in funds to build and preserve nearly 1,200 affordable housing units. The housing will be near childcare resources and jobs, with access to broadband, transportation and schools.

“More affordable housing is desperately needed,” Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said. “There are way too many hard-working households that are left behind because of skyrocketing home prices, rising rents, and fewer options to choose from. Salt Lake County is listening to residents and responding with significant funding to build and preserve housing.”

Funding for the project comes from the American Rescue Plan Act with an additional $12.1 million earmarked for water conservation and workforce development.

With the steady increase of rental and home ownership costs, and stagnant wages, the council approved the ARPA funds in the form of grants to community housing organizations, nonprofit housing providers, municipalities, and private developers.

In 2021, rental costs increased by 12% and homeownership costs increased by

28% or more in the county. In March 2022, the median price for a Salt Lake County single-family home sold for $580,000.

“Housing is one of the things that keep us up at night,” said Dina Blaes, director of Salt Lake County’s Office of Regional Development. “But, fortunately, the county has a lot of expertise in affordable housing. So, we’re going to leverage our expertise with this new funding to enable thousands of families to remain living and working in Salt Lake County.”

Workforce development will receive a $10 million boost for the new Workforce Inclusion and Successful Employment program. Through grants, WISE will help nearly 2,000 students complete trainings that lead to higher-paying jobs. Students will also be connected with childcare, mental health and mentorship services.

“I think this is an awesome opportunity for Salt Lake County residents who might be working two or three jobs. We’re making it easier for them to succeed with career goals that really help themselves and their families,” said Jevon Gibb, Salt Lake County economic development director.

H

e might not have a parrot or an eye patch, but my dad has found more buried treasure than any pirate. Inside his mild-mannered dad costume lurks the heart of Captain Jack Sparrow, ready to tackle any adventure with dashing flair and comic grace.

On a blustery day in April, he took a pickaxe and hammer to help his great-grandkids find fossilized shells and pieces of quartz on the side of a mountain near his home in central Utah. He was excited about every discovery, and everywhere he looked, he saw treasure.

He pointed to the west and said, “That mountain is full of blue agate.” He pointed down and leaned in to whisper, “We’re standing on the biggest gold mine in the state.” He pointed east to where dinosaur bones hide in the hills and pointed south to Native American sites where he’s examined petroglyphs and rock paintings.

I’ve explored with Dad many times, usually only finding spiders, cacti and the occasional rattlesnake. He can stick his hand in a hole in a rock and pull out gemstones, old coins and a jackalope skull.

Dad’s always had a sense of adventure. If he could make a living exploring

ghost towns and spelunking in caves for lost treasure, à la Indiana Jones, he’d be the happiest man on earth.

With his keen, scientific mind, he built model airplanes and assembled rockets that exploded in midair, not always on purpose. He’d ignite a mini cannon on the Fourth of July that freaked out the neighbors, cracked a basement window and set off car alarms. We’d run inside and hide like the Feds were after us. They probably were.

For him, life has been one big treasure hunt. He often takes his metal detector to parks and always shows up when a road is being dug or a house demolished.

used his Hercule Poirot-level detective skills to return it to the family of the man who’d lost it decades earlier.

Even with his work, he stood on the leading edge of discovery. In the ’60s, he helped build the first communications system for Air Force One. Later, he created cameras that flew on the space shuttle, were installed in telescopes and helped aerial refueling tankers.

A camera he designed took the first pictures of the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean.

Never one to pass up a good conspiracy theory, Dad talks about his close encounters with UFOs, ghosts, the Illuminati and home teachers. He also plays the accordion, although how can you tell if someone does that well?

He’s a master woodworker, making toys, banjos, ukuleles and violins that he donates to teens. He cuts and polishes the stones he finds to make necklaces, and he’s been known to set a trap or two for Santa Claus. He’d frighten us with scary stories before bedtime, stories he insisted were true, which made it worse.
