PUBLIC SPACE: A SKATER’S PLAYGROUND OR A PEDESTRIAN HAZARD?

S

pring has sprung: cool rain, lush lawns, bright flowers, and, to the growing irritation of city leaders, a fresh crop of teenaged skaters, who whirl through the streets in search of features to grind, gap and drop.

On a breezy afternoon in April, Xander Velez, 15, a stalwart skater, ollies onto a circular bench in the Holladay Village plaza, attempting a crooked grind on its newly waxed edge. For a moment, it looks like he’s got the bench tamed, but he loses his balance and the board clatters onto the ground.

“This trick is tough, because you have to keep one truck in the air at an angle,” he said. Xander is one among many Holladay skaters eager to make short work of the city’s ledges, benches and curbs. But their growing presence is vexing city officials, who lament the skateboarders’ impact on infrastructure and safety—and the safety issues are not limited to the skaters themselves.

“I was out front of Roxberry (Juice Co.) and a skateboarder came off the steps and scared the you-know-what out of me. Just about crashed into me,” said Mayor Robert Dahle during a March city council meeting.

If you’ve seen them in action, you get the mayor’s point, because the action is ramping up.

As Xander plies his craft in the plaza, meanwhile, across the street 17-year-old Cameron plunges off the notorious Roxberry Juice Co. stair set, whose short sidewalk landing leaves little room for error as the No. 45 UTA bus barrels past.

focus in an intense way, which is part of what’s fun about skating,” Cameron said.

For street skaters, these are boon times.

As the COVID-19 crisis has temporarily shuttered storefronts across the city, the streetscapes have opened up to skaters in a big way. “It’s been a lot easier to skate since the coronavirus, because no one’s here, and nobody’s been harassing us,” Xander said.

If the COVID-19 clear out makes for good skating now, it’s unlikely to last. City officials have been debating how to regulate skateboarding in the Holladay Village Zone, which they argue has created pedestrian hazards and leads to the degradation of architectural features.

“These skateboarders are starting to take over the plaza. All the coating on the benches have been chipped away by skateboarders. Columns are busted from skateboards crashing into them,” said Councilwoman Sabrina Petersen during a March 31 council meeting.

The council summoned Police Chief Justin Hoyal to comment on plaza skateboarding at a Feb. 20 council meeting. Hoyal explained the plaza has some “No Skateboarding” signs, but they are not highly visible and are limited to the backside.

The lack of visibility creates conundrums for enforcement. “Last fall, some of our officers were over there and asked the [skateboarders] to leave, and they got mixed responses. Some kids said, ‘OK, no problem.’ And some of the other kids said, ‘Show me where it says we can’t skate. It doesn’t say we can’t,’” Hoyal said.

Dahle said, “I’d think if a police officer tells you not to do something, you’d listen to them.”

Hoyal shrugged, and said, “It’s a different age we live in.”

In the plaza, Xander pushed back his long curly hair and took a chug from a can of Red Bull. “We’re used to it. They don’t like having us around. Never have. I’m not trying to get put into the juvenile justice system, but where are we supposed to skate?” he asked.

Subculture Contrary to Hoyal’s estimation, there’s nothing new about the contentious relationship between city officials and skaters, who’ve clashed over the use of public space since the sport gained popularity back in the 1970s. By now, the image of a rebellious and defiant skater is something of a stereotype, and while it’s often inaccurate, the truth is that skate culture has a deep tradition of nonconformity, and as a result attracts talented youth looking for unconventional forms of expression.

The iconoclastic ethos breeds creativity. Skate culture is known to pioneer trends and stamp itself in the broader culture, from music and popular idiom to high fashion. One example is the clothing brand named Supreme. Founded on the aesthetics and sensibilities of skate culture, Supreme reached an elite audience and is now a staple of New York and Paris fashion weeks.

Yet, there’s an irony in skate culture becoming high culture, because skate culture has long been characterized by its indifference to mainstream validation. The

skater’s slovenly style is often read as a type of authenticity that emphasizes performance over appearance. One of the big appeals of the sport is its relatively low overhead—get yourself a board and the rest you get for free. But the existence of companies like Supreme suggest the sport is attracting new demographics.

“I know kids that will buy $60 T-shirts and go get them dirty skating. I think it’s kind of wack, personally. I just wear whatever,” said Xander, tugging at the hem of his loose-fit Dickies chinos.

For his part, Xander wears organically distressed, loose-fit clothing reminiscent of the 1990s. Xander’s shoes, albeit, are another story entirely, giving new meaning to the term distressed. The rubber sole has a nickel-sized hole worn through to the sock, and the leather upper sole is plastered in a DIY adhesive repair known as “shoe glue.”

“My family is not super well off, so I can’t get a new pair of shoes every month. I have to buy all my own gear, and now with this virus I have not been working as much, so I’m just getting by with what I’ve got,”

Safety The ethos of anti-conformism has some problematic components, too, especially as it relates to safety, about which many skaters are notoriously laissez-faire.

“If you really enjoy skating, you have to take that risk, and it wouldn’t be the same if there wasn’t any risk. I’ve been hurt before, but you get through it. It’s one thing if your skating a huge vert bowl, but when skating the street we get by,” Xander said.

Recent analysis from the National Safety Council (NSC) shows that emergency room hospitalizations for skateboarding related injuries throughout the U.S. have topped 100,000 each year since 2013, reaching a high in 2018 with over 124,000 hospitalizations. Skateboarding ranks 10th in hospitalization incidents among sports and recreation-related injuries, according to the NCS. Many of those injuries are related to ligaments and joints, with a substantial number related to traumatic brain injury.

ers defer to municipalities, who’ve started with basic regulations like no riding in the street and in some municipal areas skateboards are not allowed on the sidewalks in the central commercial districts.

Now, Holladay city is teeing up an ordinance to restrict skateboarding, too.

Skatepark to come to Holladay?

Despite the looming crackdown, the city does not intend to hound the skateboarder demographic into exile. To the contrary, city officials are laying the groundwork to bring a skatepark to Holladay.

“What we’ve learned from professionals is that if you don’t provide a space for [skateboarders], they will find their own,” said Holly Smith, assistant city manager leading the research phase of the city’s skatepark proposal. Smith consulted with Spohn Ranch, a leading skatepark engineer with experience building in 40 different states. “We’ve got options. The city doesn’t have to put in big concrete bowls. We can install pieces that fit into a garden setting with a pleasant aesthetic, including things like concrete ribbons,” Smith said.

Tentatively, the city envisions a new skatepark at the south end of the City Hall property abutting Burton Lumber.

“A skatepark will provide a benefit to teenage citizens, but it also helps us protect our other assets.

The thing that pushes my thinking on the skate park is that we don’t want kids skating on other areas, so it allows us to protect the plaza, or the Terrace, because that’s where they’ll gravitate toward if we don’t have an alternative,” said Councilman Paul Fotheringham.

“There is a range of options. Sample designs start at $65,000 and will go up to $500,000,” Smith told the council.

Certain variables will impact the scope and scale of the city’s investment, including surrounding properties, other infrastructure projects and, looming over it all, the budget uncertainties presented by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. One competing infrastructure project is known as the Terrace, a large, open space amphitheater intended for the southside of the City Hall building. Furthermore, some councilmembers question if the skatepark best represents community priorities.

Councilmember Dan Gibbons said, “Looking at the community priority survey, the idea of a skatepark was at the very bottom of the list, coming in at just 3% in terms of what’s most important [to Holladay residents] when they visit a park.”

Yet, other members pointed out that main constituency in question—the youth—are underrepresented on the survey.

“Also, it’s a different demographic now. Forty and 50-year-old’s will want to come with their kids and ride the skatepark,” Smith said.

But the biggest uncertainty is the anticipated loss of revenue resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, which gives the city reason to pump the brakes on big projects, the skatepark included.

“My feeling is that I’m not optimistic [about the skatepark] based on the city’s challenges financially right now,” Dahle said.

For skateboarders in Holladay, the park cannot come soon enough.

“All my homies have been hoping and asking for a skatepark,” Xander said. “Since we don’t have many places to go. Instead of staying here [in the plaza] and getting on everyone’s nerves we could get some food and take it to the new park.” l

Olympus Jr. High team wins $10,000 with their microplastics filter

A

team of seven students at Olympus Jr. High call themselves the Fanplastics, and they’ve learned to make plastic without petroleum. They’ve also created a water filter for harmful microplastics, and started a pledge to encourage their peers and neighbors to dispose of microplastics properly.

Their projects, supervised by science teacher JoAnne Brown, won $10,000 in the national Lexus Eco Challenge competition.

“The team addressed the issue of microplastics – tiny degraded strings/particles of plastic waste. Water contaminated with microplastics increases the probability of many diseases, including cancer,” Brown said.

The Fanplastics team is part of Brown’s advanced class, Genius Hour. “They do one extracurricular project each year. We’ve entered the Lexus Eco Challenge before and had success,” Brown said.

Brown’s son Nevyn Brown is on the team along with Grace Taylor, Eleanor Delaney, George Eagleston, Emily Berkson, Zack Allred and Julia Bennett.

The competition is a two-part challenge over the course of the school year. Teams that win the first part, which the Fanplastics did, advance to the second part.

“They were awarded $10,000. The students get $7,000 ($1,000 each), the school

gets $2,000 and $1,000 goes to our classroom,” Brown said.

“We wanted to work with renewable energy resources. We focused on plastic single-use water bottles. We wanted to somehow create renewable energy with it. We used them to make wind turbines,” Allred said.

“We partnered with Vivint Solar and stored the energy from the wind turbines.

We charged a phone with the power from it!”

Allred said.

Then the team took it a step further. “We made our own bioplastic. We used glycerin, cornstarch, water and vinegar. We put marigold seeds in it, and it started to break down after 24 hours. We had made a plastic that was biodegradable,” Brown said.

“This was our challenge to larger industries that if we can do this, they can do this,” Brown said. They got in touch with Nelson Labs in Taylorsville, and talked with them about what they’d accomplished.

“We proved it’s possible to make plastic with things that aren’t fossil fuels. Most plastics are made from petroleum, so they’re a fossil fuel, but they also don’t break down at all. The Clean Water Act passed in 2015 banned microplastics. They were supposed to be gone by 2017, but with a new administration, there’s no one enforcing it,” Brown said.

Eagleston said microplastics are especially harmful. “They’re so small that they go right through the filters in the water treatment plant, so they end up in the water supply,” Eagleston said.

“A ton of makeup products have [microbeads], when most of the time they’re not necessary. The organic products aren’t as harmful. But those little beads you see in

hand sanitizer, those dots inside, those are microbeads. They’re in toothpaste, ChapStick, exfoliants, sunscreen. The microbeads hold [the products] together,” Allred said.

The students tested several products to collect data on quantities. They found microplastics in tap water and bottled water, and often the bottled water had more.

worst. The plastic is so thin that it degrades very easily. If you leave a water bottle in the sun, don’t put it back in the fridge. You should throw it away because there’s plastic in that water,” Berkson said.

The Fanplastics team designed a filter that would get rid of microbeads in water.

After a lot of trial and error, they came up with a design of activated carbon, clean sand, aluminum mesh and coffee filters layered together in a polyvinyl chloride container and a recycled plastic water bottle.

Can’t do that at home? The team said it’s easy to make sure microplastics don’t end up in our water supply. “All you have to do is throw these away in a regular garbage bag, tie it up and it’s sealed off. It’s a closed

system in the landfill, and it won’t get out into the water,” Brown said.

To encourage their peers, the Fanplastics passed out flyers and were planning a collection drive at the school and local library for items that contain microplastics.

With the closure of schools, now they’re relying on a pledge people can take on their website to simply throw things away in a bag in the regular trash.

Homespun creativity thrives during the quarantine

he Stay Safe, Stay Home directive from Utah Gov. Gary Herbert is challenging to most people who like to be out and about.

However, there are some hidden benefits, one of which is the ability to stay home and engage in creative activities, a “creative quarantine” if you will.

Executive Director of the Holladay Arts Council Sheryl Gillilan has been busy since the Governor’s directive. “I’m working from home, but when I’m not doing that, I’ve turned into a face mask factory. I’ve got lots of great fabric because I’m a quilter, so I’ve been making masks for family and friends.

It meets my creative need and I feel like my skills are particularly useful right now to the community. I’m also planning to donate masks when I get through my current backlog of orders.”

Gillilan continues to quilt as well. “I’m using fabric I’ve had stashed away from two different trips to Amsterdam, and the rhythm of the sewing and visible progress is very soothing to me. I’m calling it the ‘Apocalypse Quilt’ (the ending of one thing and the beginning of another). There’s an old quilter’s saying, ‘When life hands you scraps, make a quilt!’”

Though always the creative type, she said that her creative energy is “definitely different these days.”

Gillilan is also relying on her creativity to ground her and provide comfort. “I turn on my music and let my brain process life while I’m humming along and sewing. It’s very Zen-like,” she said.

Sofia Glaittli, a student in the Multidisciplinary Design Program at the University of Utah, also continues to express herself.

“I’ve been making bread, jam, pasta, watermelon drinks, sourdough pancakes, dyeing Easter eggs with red cabbage, and (making) lots of other new yummy things that I never thought I had time for,” Glaittli said.

“I converted the downstairs kitchen/ movie area into a spare bedroom by refurbishing/painting the kitchen cabinets, moving all the random junk out and putting in all my furniture that used to be in my apartment,” she said.

She did all this to prepare for her cousin moving in.

Photography is also one of her pursuits.

In one of her images, she is taking a picture of her mother wearing a mask in the car. At the same time, there is a reflection of herself in the window taking a picture of her mother—a perfect image of all that physically divides us during this pandemic.

Glaittli is also picking up old creative pursuits. “I’ve been painting in watercolor again too, sculpting things in clay and taking care of my houseplants.”

Artist Logan Nelson and his family-based band, Silver Cup, rock the internet

t would be difficult to find anyone more enthusiastic than Logan Nelson.

Not only is he enthusiastic about his musical pursuits, he is enthusiastic about everything, even hard work.

Nelson was named the Holladay Artist of the Month for May. Nelson performed in the band Solarsuit while attending Olympus High School. Everyone in the band was from Holladay and they performed for seven years.

“We were talking to Atlantic Records,” Nelson said. The band eventually broke up, something which has been very difficult for Nelson.

If there was one good thing that came of it, it was that it spawned him to write, direct and score “Cipher,” a short film based on a young man’s mental health struggles. He named the production company that created “Cipher,” Villa Theatre Co. after the iconic theater on Highland Drive now an upscale rug shop. The persistent Nelson was able to raise $35,000 for the project.

He then started the band Silver Cup, consisting of his family members.

“I was always let down because my expectations were put so high,” he said.

“So why don’t I just call these people that I know and trust? So, I started the band Silver Cup. My little brother has played bass for over 10 years. My little sister has been singing her whole life.”

“And let’s just make something in my basement. No more big studios, no more paying thousands of dollars,” Nelson added.

His instincts proved to be right on with Silver Cup. The group performed a song he wrote about Holladay, “Sabbath,” which turned out to be a hit online.

Nelson said that “Sabbath” was a great way to introduce themselves and was also an homage to their roots.

“We didn’t expect it to be anything,” he said. “We are still navigating around 25% interaction with all of our fans. The average is 1.6% per page.”

“Most of our fans are not from Holladay,” he said. Sabbath has over 13,000 streams in Chicago.

The COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be an advantage to Silver Cup. “It’s been kind of fun to interact with fans. There are so many people on their phones right now. We have had a serious uptick in streams and also interactions,” Nelson said. “But it’s kind of sad because people are bored.

Nelson said it has been a mess for the music industry on the live performance side since most live concerts have been cancelled.

Technically trained in voice and guitar, Nelson has also taught himself about music from the internet.

“My whole life I have been a writer. I love writing music. I love diving in deep,” he said. “I started writing music at about 10 years old.” He wrote a song about frontiersman Jedediah Smith and received a lot of attention for that. He also wrote a song about Canada when he was a boy.

“I am a songwriter above all,” Nelson said.

Regarding his musical production talents, he said, “I like to capture soundscapes.”

Nelson bursts with optimism.

“Every piece, every song, every work that any artist has ever done—they’re on the verge to make something even better.”

However, he does not shy away from hard work. “Persistence is important.”

Hackers strike Holladay company

ybercriminals struck a Holladaybased medical data company and stole $259,000 that police say is unlikely to be recaptured, according to a Holladay precinct quarterly police report made public in February. The cybercriminals obtained the medical company’s bank routing information after hacking the server of a trusted vender, located in Scottsdale, Arizona, then posed as the vender to solicit the company’s account numbers. The company asked not to be identified.

Detectives with the Unified Police Department (UPD) conducted an “email header analysis” and traced the source of the criminal attack to the African country of Nigeria.

Because the origin of attack is outside United States jurisdiction, the losses are unlikely to be recouped, according to Holladay precinct Police Chief Justin Hoyal.

The attack comes as cybercrime is growing across the country, with experts estimating the costs to the public and private sectors has risen to over $400 billion a year.

The health care industry is disproportionately targeted, according to CSO Online. Most hacks fall under the category of “spear-phishing,” a tactic in which malware and ransomware viruses are embedded as

They’ve got the power! Wasatch Charter School goes solar

asatch Charter School in Holladay got to have one last celebration before the soft closure of schools in March.

They celebrated their switch to solar energy, made possible by a Blue Sky grant.

“Our school opened in 2016, and throughout the design process solar panels were built in; it was always part of the plan,” said Emily Merchant, the school’s executive director.

On March 11, the day after they’d switched to solar power, the school held an event for students. They were joined by representatives from Rocky Mountain Power, Blue Sky and Creative Energies – the company that installed the panels.

As a charter school, Wasatch has a unique curriculum that includes gardening, beekeeping and outdoor experiences. “The conversion to solar energy aligns well with the school’s curriculum and mission of environmental stewardship. It also facilitates opportunities for students to monitor solar energy production,” Merchant said.

Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program is funded by customer donations.

For $1.95 per 200 kWh block, customers donate with their monthly bill. Fifty percent of the donations go to wind energy projects and 50% go to solar energy. The grant covered most of the $204,000 cost of installing the 416 panels.

Rocky Mountain Power’s website reports that 131,812 of their customers participate in donating to the program, which has currently funded 148 projects.

“One of our board members, Kevin Emerson, was really involved. He helped spearhead the grant process to get us the funding. It’s not coming from a business entity; it’s coming from the people in the community. I think it’s a great thing,” Merchant said.

“This is a big deal. It helps cut utility costs so the school can redirect funds to educational priorities, while also shrinking the school’s carbon footprint. It provides a real-world opportunity for students to learn

about science, pollution and the solutions to environmental problems,” Emerson said. Emerson was a board member from 2015-2019 and has a son who attends the school.

At the event, students learned more about their new energy source. Company representatives handed out sunglasses and presented Merchant with a check. They also showed students photos of the school from above.

“This was an exciting project as it not only supports renewable energy development, but enhances the educational experience for Wasatch students. We are grateful to our Blue Sky customers for making renewable projects like these possible,” said Bill Comeau, Rocky Mountain Power vice president of customer experience and innovation.

Merchant said the panels will play a role in education. “We taught students how to read the tracker and use the online portal. It’s a fun interactive piece, especially for our older students, to be able to see our school’s power usage,” Merchant said.

Wasatch gets about 88% of their electric power from the panels. Days that have less or more sun can influence energy levels, but excess power goes back into the grid system and it averages out over time.

“We’re not always using the same amount or generating the same amount,” Merchant said.

The event on March 11 showed students an alternative energy resource in action. “Our students are interested in sustainable living and renewable energy sources. We’ve shown them we’re taking action where we can as a school,” Merchant said.

“Practicing what we preach is really the goal. We already have a robust recycling and composting program. The compost goes into our gardening program. The food from our gardens makes its way into our kitchens and our CSA program, which is available to families at our Fall Harvest farm stand,” Merchant said.

Wasatch’s science advisor and seventh-grade teacher Arthur Morris was excited that the school’s actions will contribute to the students’ well-being for many years to come.

“This is a valuable story to tell. We are serving the students in so many ways as a community of teachers, families and friends. It’s nice to know we are helping these children, and contributing to a brighter future by doing something good for air quality in the valley,” Morris said. l

MAYOR’S MESSAGE I hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy.

Please keep in mind that I am writing this article on April 20th. The environment we are operating in is dynamic; it literally changes day-byday. Though I’m sure most of the content will remain relevant, I’ll leave it to you to make that determination.

On April 17th, Governor Herbert and Salt Lake County Mayor Wilson announced that a loosening of the stay at home directive was on the horizon. It corroborated the good news that the Stay Safe, Stay Home and social distancing initiatives were indeed “flattening the curve” of the Covid-19 infection. The projected 8-12 week duration of the urgent phase of the Governor’s Utah Leads Together Plan for health and economic recovery was trending toward a bestcase scenario (8 weeks, beginning March 16th). This was good news for all of us chomping at the bit to begin a recovery effort.

This announcement would potentially move us in to the stabilization phase of the plan in early May, which is projected to last 10-14 weeks. In this phase the goal is to ensure no backtracking on critical progress made during the urgent phase, provide promising medical treatments, and continuing to lay the groundwork for a complete economic recovery. You can expect this transition to be a gradual opening of appropriate segments of the economy, with restrictions, while mass gatherings continue to be delayed until

we reach the recovery phase of the plan, or possibly later. It’s important that we all remain informed. City, County, State and Federal agencies update web sites and various social media platforms daily. These tools enable us to act in a way that keeps us healthy during the recovery phase. This is a community wide effort; we all need to continue pulling in the same direction!

I encourage you to remain diligent and disciplined. I understand there is building pressure to move more rapidly. I can assure you, none of us want to continue with restrictions a minute longer than is absolutely necessary, but the recovery has to balance the serious health risks of moving too fast with the economic pain of a hobbled economy.

Our city will continue to follow the guidance of state and county leaders and the counsel they are receiving from the medical professionals, economists and business leaders charged with helping them navigate this unprecedented global pandemic.

What to Know About Adding Fowl to Your Yard

All homes in the County Animal Services’ jurisdiction need to pay an annual permit of $50 and have a coop inspection.

You can send back the completed application via email or mail and we will reach out to you to collect payment and schedule an inspection. *It is important to consider rooster allowances when choosing your chicks.

There are breeds of chickens that have different coloring for males and females, making it easy to ensure you are only getting hens.

What is Your Family’s Emergency Communication Plan?

Harvey, Municipal Emergency Management Planner Because of the March 18th earthquake, the ongoing aftershocks, and the conornoavirus, you may be more aware now than ever before that one can never tell what is going to happen next! Take the time now to develop a family communication plan so you will know how to get in touch with the ones you love and care for if an emergency or disaster happens. Plan, discuss, and practice what to do if something happens while you are at home together or if you are separated.

Your “at home plan” should contain two ways out of each room and a meeting place outside the house.

• Discuss and practice how you would leave the house if there is a fire or other reason to evacuate.

• Determine where you would meet after you get out of the house. Remember, you should be out of the way of any first responders who are arriving to assist.

• Practice leaving your home and meeting at your designated spot a few times a year.

Your “away from home plan” should contain phone numbers, meeting locations, and an out of town contact.

• Ensure important phone numbers are written down and accessible; we often don’t memorize phone numbers because they are on programmed on our cellphones. If an emergency or disaster happens and your cell phone is lost, having phone numbers written down and accessible will allow people to get in touch using another person’s phone.

• Determine places you would meet if an event happens and communications are disrupted.. It is best to discuss two or three alternate meeting locations and fully understand who is going where if an emergency happens and communications are cut off.

• Designate an out-of-town contact. Identify someone out of the area everyone in your family knows to call if there’s an emergency. Sometimes local coverage can be overwhelmed after an emergency but long distance calls still work. Having someone outside the local area that family members know to call and check in with can allow them be the conduit of information until local telecommunications service is restored. Make sure the outside-the-area person knows what you need them to do for you so they are prepared to write down information.

Take the time to create your plan and have your discussions today; you never know what tomorrow will bring.

CHANGES TO AREA CLEANUP

UFA UPDATE

Due to COVID-19 and staffing shortages, WFWRD has made changes to the area clean up. On a first-come, first-served basis, residents will be allowed to reserve one container during their scheduled time which is the 1st week of August, and the container will be placed in the resident’s driveway. There will be no additional fee for this service. Containers will not be placed in the street. Green waste will not be collected separately. DO NOT place any waste at curbside. **Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling does not have enough containers for every resident to have a container. Residents are encouraged to work together with neighbors and coordinate a mutual date to utilize the container**

How do I Schedule a Container?

Residents will receive a postcard in the mail, three to four weeks in advance of your scheduled area clean up time. Once those postcards are delivered, you can reserve a container for the date(s) available to you. You will need to complete a release of liability to reserve a container, which is on the webpage - wasatchfrontwaste. org/area-clean-up/ to schedule your reservation.

Containers will be dropped off sometime between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m (an estimated time of arrival cannot be provided). on the scheduled day. WFWRD staff will try to ensure that residents can have up to 24 hours for the container.

Driveways must be cleared, accessible, and have enough room (approximately 8’ x 12’) for the container to be placed so that it is off of the street and public sidewalk.

If the driveway is inaccessible, the container will not be delivered, and you will lose your opportunity for the container at your residence.

New Mobile App Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling District (WFWRD) has launched a free mobile app for its residents. It can be found by searching for “Wasatch Front Waste” on the Apple or Android app stores, and it is available in both English and Spanish.

The app includes a “Recycle Right” lookup tool to find out if a material can be reused, recycled, composted or landfilled. The app also provides a scheduling tool for residents to confirm their collection day, and it provides an option for customized reminders for their pick-up days.

As I write this, it is April 20th. I hope, by the time you all read this, that the worst has passed, and we are on our way back to normal. As firefighters, we still have been going to work, going on calls, and putting out fires. But, to be honest, it hasn’t been the same. We haven’t done any station tours, talks at schools, or showed off the fire engine to anyone for far too long and WE MISS IT! Former Utah First Lady’s books address internet safety at a time when more students are online

R

ight in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, former Utah First Lady Jackie Leavitt launched the sixth book in the Faux Paw series she has co-written — and said it’s a perfect time to do so.

“Children are at home as we practice social distancing to avoid the coronavirus, but they also are likely spending more time being connected on the internet through technology,” Leavitt said. “But we want the children to be safe online and understand the importance of guidelines while using the internet.”

Her series of adventures address internet safety with Faux Paw – a now 20-year-old orange polydactyl (six-toed) cat who used to reside in her husband’s office when Mike Leavitt was governor.

“Faux Paw was the perfect way to talk about internet safety with school children,” she said. “People would come to the office to see the cat even more than the governor. There was so much interest in the cat, that it just fit he would be the mascot or the star of the books.”

While the cat at one time had his own website, now the former First Lady said the books about Faux Paw the Techno Cat are available as a free online resource to parents on iKeepSafe.org under the family access tab. In addition, each elementary school throughout the state has two copies of each book in the series.

“In each of the books, Faux Paw the Techno Cat addresses different issues and gets curious and into trouble, but he has good friends who help him understand how to be a good digital citizen. In this last book, “Faux Paw and the Unfortunate Upload-Digital Ethics for Kids,” he posts pictures of the band without permission and learns how important it is to treat others well to have their respect,” she said.

The books begin with Faux Paw learning firsthand about privacy online.

In another book, he learns what to do if someone says something untrue with the help of former U.S. First Lady Laura Bush. The other books address balancing screen time as Faux Paw gets distracted playing online games, illegal downloading when he wants to get a new song, and making healthy media choices.

The series aren’t written on her own.

After consulting with two child psychologists, Leavitt said she “wrote the nuts and bolts” of the stories. She credits co-author Sally S. Linford for making the stories “more fun and clever” as well as illustrator Adrian Ropp, who “was able to take a

very difficult subject and add an element of fun and comfort to it.”

The books also come with internet resources, discussion questions and the newest, with catchy informative tunes to familiar melodies.

With precautions taken for COVID-19, this time with children at home can be a unique window that can be used for learning digital ethics and positive online skills, she said.

“We know that many of our youth will have more access and be online during this time and with parents trying to teach and work at home, this is a free way to communicate how to be a good citizen online,” Leavitt said.

Healthy living in a “connected world” does require these necessary skills and conversations, she said.

Seeing the need for those conversations in her own family inspired Leavitt to write about the issues surrounding being online. She also heard the need to address these concerns from other parents – including the last one from her daughter.

“In each of these books, there are different topics that can be looked at and talked with our children and youth and there are additional resources, such as ‘Be Internet Awesome,’ that can be accessed for free on the page,” Leavitt said. “It’s a

fun way to get kids interested in talking about being safe online. They know so many things, but as parents, we need to make sure our children and teens do it safely.” iKeepSafe originated in 2003 as an effort from the Leavitts, then grew as the First Spouses from other states joined.

While Leavitt has written other books ranging on experiences such as hosting the 2002 Winter Olympics and the tornado that uprooted 90 trees on the capitol lawn, she is dedicated to the cat who gives schoolchildren practical internet lessons.

“I enjoy writing,” said the former elementary school teacher. “It’s more compelling and necessary to write about online safety. It’s vital our parents and children know about it and are making healthy online choices.”

Once schools resume, Leavitt plans to read about Faux Paw’s latest adventure to school children and share with them internet safety rules she’ll pass out on bookmarks — and she may even be asked what is Faux Paw the Techno Cat’s next adventure.

“If there are new areas that we need to address, then I’ll write another,” Leavitt said. “There’s no set number, but we do the books as we need them to ensure the children’s, students’ safety online.” l

State and city emergency managers cite key lessons from March earthquake

T

he Great Utah Shakeout came a month early this year with the real deal. The 5.7 magnitude earthquake that shook the Salt Lake Valley on March 18, and the many aftershocks in the weeks that followed, made all those past community earthquake drills startlingly relevant. The good news was that the March 18 quake was not “the big one” that Utahns have been taught to expect. On the other hand, officials learned that many residents still needed a lot more practice in preparedness.

“It’s given us an opportunity to practice our emergency management process,” said Wade Mathews, Be Ready Utah manager with the Utah Division of Emergency Management.

“We were already active for COVID-19, and it’s given us an opportunity. People didn’t quite remember what to do. We want to emphasize the importance of stay where you are, stop, drop and hold on.”

Mathews cited the quake as a great learning opportunity for everyone. In the event of a much larger earthquake, the shaking would likely be too violent for people to run for cover. Even in large aftershocks, the best thing for people to do in the moment is to stay where they are, drop down, and hold on for cover. If an earthquake were to strike when people are in bed, for example, Mathews said the best thing for them to do is to stay in bed and put a pillow

over their heads for protective cover.

The March earthquake provided real experience for local emergency personnel to put all their drills into practice.

Cottonwood Heights canceled its annual Shakeout event due to social distancing measures for the COVID-19 pandemic, but officials tentatively plan to hold a drill this fall. Lessons learned from the recent earthquake will help inform their planning.

“The biggest thing that we’ve seen is that it has brought the realization that it could happen,” said Assistant Emergency Manager Julie Sutch of the Cottonwood Heights Police Department. “That’s probably the biggest takeaway. We’re seeing more people being geared toward preparedness.”

Preparedness is the primary concern for Mathews. From the state level to community organizations to each household, knowing what to do is the top priority. “We’re going to emphasize protective action more with our outreach,” Mathews said. “If we don’t know how to survive the disaster, the rest of our plans don’t matter. We want everyone to be able to survive.

That’s why we emphasize protective action so much.”

The lessons of the recent earthquake, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, have provided real reminders of the importance of emergency preparedness. “We want to create a culture of preparedness where we live,” Mathews said. “Knowing the risks of where we live helps us have emergency preparedness plans in place.” l

Online school administrator offers tips on virtual education

W

ith Utah classrooms set to be closed for the remainder of the academic year, teachers, parents and students continue to adjust.

Social distancing guidelines to slow the spread of COVID-19 have altered the daily lives of Utahns in everything from grocery shopping to working from home. As schools closed their doors in March, students found themselves thrust into learning remotely as teachers had to move lessons online in lieu of face-to-face instruction.

Erin Taylor, the principal of online school Utah Connections Academy and a school administrator of 15 years, said her advice to parents helping their children do school from home and teachers moving their lessons online is the same: keep things simple.

“What is most important? What’s the objective? Then work backward,” she said. “We don’t have to be bringing the new flashy things in. Hit the basics, do what’s right in front of you. Having that be your daily objective would make less stress.”

While communication is important, too much can be overwhelming.

“I think everyone’s being bombarded on both sides with ideas. The best advice I can give is to simplify things,” she said.

Scheduling your day with a basic outline

of tasks to do can be helpful for students doing their schoolwork virtually (and adults adjusting to working from home).

“It’s hard to put it away for an hour and come back to it,” Taylor said. “I think it’s best to schedule it in, then check the box that you’re done with the day.”

She also advises students to reach out to their teachers if they need help.

“We’re all learning as we go. Ask questions, and check in with your teacher rather than get frustrated,” she said. “On the other side is a person that wants to help.”

The current situation is here to stay a little while longer: Gov. Gary Herbert announced on April 14 that all public K-12 schools would continue to be closed through the rest of the 2019-2020 academic year.

But despite the challenges that come with any changes in one’s learning environment, there can be positive sides to remote learning as well, said Taylor.

“We see the advantage in that it allows people to focus on education and then be done with it for the day and move on to something else,” she said. “The flexibility is the best thing that virtual education brings.”

Taylor emphasized that with so much uncertainty, putting in your best efforts each day is all you can do.

“In this unprecedented time, we all need to cut ourselves a lot of slack,” she said. “If we’re doing the best we can, that’s good enough.”

She compares the current situation to

learning a foreign language: not something that can be completely mastered overnight.

“If we could just be conversational… We don’t need a mastery of the language,” she said. l

Eat well to perform well

hether doing squat jumps and mountain climbers in your basement or running (with social distancing in mind) at your local park, people are finding ways to train for their preferred sports. But one important aspect to remember is nutrition.

The topic of sports nutrition is likely to spark constant change and intriguing research for a competitive or recreational athlete.

“It can all depend on the type of activity you are doing as to what you should be eating,” Andrea Talbot, a registered dietitian nutritionist at the Bariatric Medicine Institute in Salt Lake City, said.

What is sports nutrition?

Nutrition is the foundation of athletic success. A well-designed nutrition plan allows active athletes to perform at their best.

The right type of food will supply energy, nutrients and fluids to keep the body hydrated and functioning at peak levels.

“Think about food as being fuel,” said personal trainer at Drive Personal Performance Center Kenyon James. “For a race car to perform at its best it needs clean fuel, the best it can get. If you go get unleaded fuel from the gas station before the race it will never go fast. The same is true for an athlete.

If they eat junk food the body will not work well.”

The energy our bodies need for the best body function comes from three main food groups.

Carbohydrates are either simple or complex. Simple carbs include sugars that occur naturally in foods such as fruits, vegetables and milk. Breads and potatoes are examples of complex carbs. The digestive system breaks down carbohydrates into glucose which feeds energy to the body’s cells.

Proteins are made up of amino acids. It plays an important role in muscle recovery and growth.

Fats provide energy to the body and protect our organs and cell membranes.

clude sufficient calories and healthy nutrients. Depending on the activity the athlete may adjust his intake for his or her needs.

“I used to eat like five to six thousand calories when I was riding my bike in training,” former competitive cyclist Kiley Cook said. “I eat a lot less now, but weigh about 15 pounds more. My dad bod is coming in nicely.”

Cook said his failure to adjust diet could be affecting the way his body digests the food he is eating.

Endurance event participants of one to two hours daily should eat three to five grams of carbs per pound of body weight to keep up with demand of energy on the body. A 200-pound man should eat approximately 600g of carbohydrates, but should use minimal amounts of fat and proteins the day of an event according to active.com.

If activities last more than one hour it is important to replenish the electrolytes and glucose, sports drinks and fluids are a good idea for endurance athletes.

Resistance training programs are designed to build strength. Protein intake is especially vital. According to werywellfit.com protein requirements can vary by body type and fitness level.

We all lose body water throughout the day. Athletes lose additional body water through sweat. Fluid replacement is an essential part of a nutrition plan to maintain the body’s optimum performance.

“If you feel thirsty you’re already becoming dehydrated,” Talbot said. “Drinking is a very personal thing during training. You do not necessarily need electrolytes replacement unless the activity takes more than 90 minutes.”

Whether exercising as a competitive athlete or for health improvement, sport nutrition should play an important role in your success. It can help enhance performance, improve recovery and make reaching goals possible. l

Like many others, being thrust into solitary confinement, left me with some spare time to spend on social media, and thanks to my friends I learned so much about how to handle this disaster. With the vast array of opinions, I found putting it all together difficult though, but I gave it shot anyway. It’s all as clear as mud now, here’s what I learned.

Working from Home: If you are able to work from home you are lucky, unless you are required to work from home, then it’s horrible and you wished you could go to work, because working from home is too much work.

Keeping a Healthy Diet: In effort not to get sick we should eat well, but we should not go out to get healthy fresh food when we run out and eat whatever pre-packaged food we have on hand instead. However, we should order out at our local restaurants to help keep them in business. Then it’s okay to go out to pick up the food. Your food might be prepared by someone sick that doesn’t know they are sick, but it’s okay if you pay by credit card and take the food out of the container. However, you should avoid going to the grocery store at all costs because you might get sick.

Getting Sick: Wearing a mask is not helpful, but if you get sick you should wear a mask. But, don’t go to the hospital if you’re sick, because you might get sick if you do.

Earthquakes: In the event of an earthquake get outside, but otherwise don’t go outside it’s not safe. Also, keep in mind that on the annual practice day called ShakeOut, there might really be an earthquake, then it’s no longer a practice day and you can go outside.

Politics: We are all be untied as American’s; we are proud, and this is the time we shine. But, if there’s a government action that we don’t approve of, then we are not united if we disagree with our friend. We might even be called names, because name calling on social media is okay. Huh???

Love: We love our partners so much we could not live without them, they are our everything, unless we have to live with them non-stop. Then we feel we’d rather live without them.

Home Schooling: Teachers are the saints and I can no longer remember why I even had kids.

Grandparents: You can’t see your grandkids, but if you’re a grandparent and work in a grocery store or pharmacy, then you can see someone else’s grandkids. You can avoid getting the virus and still see your grandkids virtually by using a computer program called Zoom but, watch out, your computer might get a virus instead.

Tomorrow is Another Day in Quarantine

As soon as COVID-19 hovered in the air we breathe, I went into full-on “Gone With the Wind” Scarlett O’Hara mode, ripping up bed sheets to make toilet paper and stockpiling moonshine for antiseptic. Of course, Scarlett was useless in an emergency. For the majority of the Civil War, she whined and married rich men.

I’m also pretty useless in emergencies.

When I knew the shelter-in-place edict was coming, I didn’t stockpile food, I scurried to the library to check out all the books.

After hoarding four months of library books, I told everyone in the house (my husband, my daughter and her two children, ages 3 and 8) to check their 72-hour kits.

They responded, “What 72-hour kits?”

Not a good start.

In the shed, I located an emergency essentials bag that looked like it had housed a family of weasels. Along with 10 years of dust, it contained an expired can of roasted almonds, a box of matches, a pair of underwear and a spatula.

We were doomed.

Tossing my hair like Scarlett, I tied on my shopping bonnet and sang out “fiddledee-dee” as I headed to the grocery store for provisions. By the time I got there, options were limited, unless I was keen on making a casserole with canned asparagus, creamed squid and buckwheat flour. I figured we’d just be creative with dinner. (Lesson learned: 3-year-old granddaughters don’t like creative dinners.)

This has been the worst staycation ever. I do not recommend.

Both my husband and I can work from home, so we take turns sharing the home office space. One person works in the office with a comfy chair every other day, while the other person sits on a workout ball at a TV table in the bedroom.

It’s . . . complicated. And we’re adjusting to each other’s work behaviors.

My puppy, Jedi, is over-the-moon excited to have me around, LITERALLY sitting on my feet all day. She got even clingier when the earthquake rattled our home (not funny Mother Nature) and she made me carry her 60-pound furry body from room-to-room for the next week.

As life was boiled down to its necessities, I realized how often (in the before-times) I would bored-shop, bored-Starbucks and bored-TV-binge. Since March, I’ve narrowed that list down to bored TV binging. (Between “Better Call Saul” and “Ozark” I definitely

As warmer weather approaches, I miss shopping for new spring clothes. Looking back on how Scarlett made dresses out of her velvet draperies, I tried channeling her creative spirit again. It was tough to made clothes out of our window coverings since we only have wooden blinds. But I did my best.

We’re still in lock-down mode. I replenish our milk and produce once a week. We walk the dog a dozen times a day. We work and eat and read and play games and get on each other’s nerves and fight and make up and write hopeful messages on the sidewalk in colorful chalk.

Like Scarlett, there are lots of things I’ll worry about tomorrow. But if we have books to read, food to eat and our family is safe, I’m very content in my little corner of the world.l
