Tea, coffee shops providing sense of community in Holladay

W

armth, conviviality and fun are alive and well on Holladay Boulevard. Auntie Rae’s or 3 Cups could provide a lively atmosphere, a tea or coffee, and a sense of belonging—even if you’re alone.

A sense of community and connection was one reason Raelynn Potts (Auntie Rae) opened her tea and sweets shop in 2015. “The tea and what you drink is less important than the fact that you come, you sit, you reconnect,” Potts said. “And it’s made to be slow and restorative.”

Potts’ tea parties have grown in popularity, and it provides her with great satisfaction. “I’ve had all kinds of stories about sweet memories,” she said.

“Sad, but sweet memories, where somebody said, ‘My mother brought us all here, and then a month later, she was diagnosed with cancer, and then we lost her.’”

Potts believes that the historic home in which Auntie Rae’s is located adds to the enjoyment of the tea party experience. “So, when you come in and have a tea party, you’ll have your own private room, and the house is small,” she said. “So, you’re only in common spaces for a short time before you get to your space.”

It’s not just the tea parties that are popular.

Potts’ desserts are only growing in popularity due in part to one of her bakers, Cathy Rogers.

“I’ve always been a home baker,” Rogers said.

“I get to be creative, and I have contact with people who come in,” she said of her position.

Cookie sundaes and fudge cake are among the favorites. “And then our pies are very popular,” Potts said. “We focus on fresh, individual portioning.” The shop has learned to keep triple berry and peach on hand along with “apple hand pie,” a version of an apple turnover.

Potts credits the success of Auntie Rae’s in part to the people of Holladay. “Holladay residents are very committed to small businesses—supporting them, engaging with them—making sure they’re doing well,” she said. “You can tell in their interactions with you.”

Proprietors Lisa Dickman and Derek Belnap feel the same way. Opened in 2014, 3 Cups coffee house has been a steady success. “I think we’ve been able to create a space in what is historically a pretty conservative area where people from all walks of life can feel at home or feel welcome,” Dickman said. “I think we’ve established ourselves as sort of a living room space for people here.”

This is apparent when walking into 3 Cups. Junior high school students and the laptop-working crowd sit side-by-side in an energetic atmosphere.

The shop was literally built upon the work of Dickman’s father. “This actual space was a business that my dad had when we were growing up,” she said. “And so, it kind of felt like it was meant to be a little when the opportunity came.” Dickman’s father’s shop was Video Vern’s.

Derek Belnap had been in the coffee business for over a decade, and opening a shop was something about which he had thought frequently. Belnap and Dickman were once married and continue to work as business partners.

Evenings, 3 Cups switches from its regular menu to a charcuterie menu, to “more of a wine and cheese type atmosphere,” Dickman said. If you come in on the weekend, there is often a brunchtype feel to the place.

Outside of espresso drinks, which are the bread and butter for 3 Cups, popular menu choices include the avocado toast and cinnamon rolls.

3 Cups also gives back to the community with Monday night workshops that can cover everything from wine and spirit classes to mental health topics.

Additionally, there is live music on Friday nights.

Whether it’s a tea party, a coffee-driven laptop session, or drinks with friends, Auntie Rae’s and 3 Cups are go-to Holladay destinations. l

District Crisis Team helps students deal with the unexpected

A

long-time elementary school teacher dies over a weekend.

A school shooting happens off-campus but during school time.

A fifth-grader is hit by a car on her way to school.

Events such as these trigger the Granite School District Crisis Team. Often when such events occur, the statement is made that “grief counselors will be available at the school.” The grief counselors are the District Crisis Team.

When a crisis occurs, Ben Horsley, chief of staff for the district, and school directors, who are district staff overseeing numerous schools, are notified. From there, the District Crisis Team is activated.

“I get notified, and I start a text chain,” Judy Petersen, director of college and career readiness, said. “We always communicate everything using our technology. So I’ve got my crisis group and my leadership group. And we get everybody in those groups together and communicating and make it happen.”

The team The District Crisis Team supports a school’s crisis team. Every school has a crisis team of the principal, vice-principals, counselors, social workers, the school psychologist, and others. They are the first to stand up.

In the case of a teacher’s death at Wright Elementary, only one member of the District Crisis Team was needed because the local crisis team had called upon neighboring schools. They had social workers from Lake Ridge Elementary, Orchard Elementary, Matheson Junior High and Cyprus High School.

Other times, like the recent Hunter High shooting, the entire five-person team is deployed. But, again, it depends on local resources and local needs.

The team has developed an easily accessible virtual folder available on all computers in the district.

“It’s our crisis folder,” Petersen said. “It has resources. It has the protocol for principals to follow, sample emails to parents to teachers, a sample script of what to say in your staff meeting, what to say in the classroom. So, we’ve gone over as much as we possibly can think of and put it in that file. And it’s dynamic.

We’re always adjusting it.”

The protocol The protocol is designed to flex depending on the situation.

For example, when the teacher died over the weekend there was time to prepare. Petersen explained the first step was a before-school meeting with administration, teachers and staff. Relevant details were shared, and a plan for the day was drawn up. The plan called for teachers to

deliver the news. However, a District Crisis Team member could support the teacher if a teacher didn’t feel capable.

“You want kids to know before they get their social media because news travels fast,” Petersen said.

“We have a little script we follow,” Petersen said. “The script says you probably have people in your family who have passed away.

You know of people who are sick, and you’re worried about them passing away. We talk about how that’s just part of life. It’s OK to feel sad. It’s OK to be scared. It’s OK not to know what to expect. Sometimes with the little kids we’ll use children’s books to help them understand grief.”

Teachers were also instructed to look for students who needed extra support.

Those students are provided an increased level of intervention.

“We just talk to the kids because there’s that empty desk in the room. And it takes some time to process all of it,” Petersen said.

Petersen mentioned that by lunchtime, most students are feeling OK. “In the afternoon, we flip it,” Petersen said. “After we’ve gone through our script, and we know that the kids are OK, then we turn it to a positive.”

The crisis team asks students to write cards for the family. The team models what to say.

“In this case, dear Mrs. So and So’s family. We’re so sorry about her passing.

And then we asked them to write something really positive that they remember about that person, and then have them sign their name,” Petersen said. “And boy, some of the cards that we get are just so touching.

We screen them because we don’t want anything inappropriate going to the deceased person’s home. But they’re just really, really good.”

In the case of an event like the Hunter shooting that happens suddenly, the District Crisis Team adapts the protocol because changes are happening so fast. For Hunter, there were two variables to control. First, the team could not enter until the school was safe, and secondly, a lot of planning and scheduling had to happen. For example, the information had to be sent to parents about the incident and the school’s response before being dismissed. Another planning issue was changing the bus schedule to allow a 1 p.m. dismissal. The crisis team also provided support to the Granite School District Police, who responded to the event.

Regardless of the size of the crisis, the District Crisis Team “Gathers the list of names of all of the students who their teachers and others identified to meet individually with a social worker. Because before we leave the school, we make sure that every

parent of every student that we’ve met with during the day gets a call.”

The final action is a debriefing meeting for all people involved. The district crisis team wants to identify steps that went well and document learning points for the next crisis.

The personal cost Members of the District Crisis Team have other responsibilities, but they drop their work at a moment’s notice.

“It takes a toll on us. It just zaps your energy,” Petersen said. “Before we leave the room or wherever we are debriefing, we articulate to each other what our plan is for self-care for when we get away from the situation. And that’s invaluable.”

SafeUT Petersen mentioned how helpful the SafeUT app is for students. According to their website, “The SafeUT app provides a way to connect to licensed counselors that are ready to listen to any sized crisis or concern. Help is immediate and confidential, and as easy as reaching for your phone and sending that first text.”

Originally, SafeUT was designed for students and educators. However, the initiative proved successful, that two more SafeUT apps were created. SafeUT Frontline is for frontline workers like law enforcement, fire/EMS, healthcare professionals and their families. SafeUT National Guard is for members and their families serving in the Utah National Guard.l

Olympus students’ art displayed at Springville Art Museum’s 50th annual all-state show

T

he Springville Museum of Art student show runs through March 25. Now in its 50th year, the All-State High School Art show received 1,063 entries this year. Of those, 335 were selected for exhibition.

Entries from seven Olympus High students were among those selected for the show.

“I assigned the AP art students to enter this show because it helps them build up their portfolios, which is how they get credit for the class. They hate it when I assign them to enter things, but then they’re really glad afterwards that they did it,” said Olympus’s AP art teacher Jeremy Petersen.

The selections included Janie Bonham, the art Sterling Scholar from Olympus. Bonham’s work is an oil on board called “Anticipation.” It received an Award of Merit.

“I was interested in the idea of time, and when I first started I was painting something that had to do with procrastination. The more I worked with it, the more I realized I wanted to change it and do something different. So I made her (the subject) looking forward to something instead of procrastinating,” Bonham said.

Most of the students whose entries were selected are in Petersen’s AP art class. Instead of a traditional AP test for credit, on test day the students upload their portfolio to be adjudicated. They also have several presentation nights in the spring.

Junior Sophie Santos was also given an Award of Merit. Her digital painting was selected for the traveling exhibition, and is called “Solution 5: Oyster Mushrooms to Combat Oxidized Oil Spill.”

Santos’s artist statement explains how her art expresses her hope for solutions to climate issues. “Mushrooms are an untapped resource when resolving the threats pollution poses to humanity’s current way of life. They can digest plastics and crude

Santos envisions oyster mushrooms as “futuristic machinery” to help the climate crisis. And yes, she has also thought of and

Her face is aglow with light. Carlston drew inspiration from a Native American myth that ravens brought light to the universe after stealing it.

Maddi Fairbanks is a senior whose work “Blue” was done in ballpoint pen.

“I just bought a pack of cheap pens from the dollar store.” Pens are much harder to draw with than pencils because you can’t erase mistakes, but Fairbanks said that was actually her intention.

“My drawing has a lot of scribbles, which might look like mistakes. But my piece represents finding beauty in imperfection.…[It’s] overwhelming up close.

From afar one can understand how flaws can work together to form something beautiful,” Fairbanks said.

Artist statements from three other students describe their works. Rebekah Latham is a junior who used papier-mâché to create an alebrije—a fantastical Mexican folk art sculpture. It’s called “Colors Through an Alebrije.”

“This project challenged me because this is my first time actually sculpting with papier-mâché. I thought it might be interesting to create this project using animals to represent earth, wind and water,” Latham wrote.

Senior Eliza Meier’s oil on board painting of a leopard is called “Curiosity,” and was selected for the traveling exhibition.

“I wanted to redefine the stereotype of a predatory animal by focusing on the leopard’s curiosity rather than the killer instincts. Repeating patterns in the background also emphasize its individualized pattern, which makes each one unique,” Meier said.

Several of the entries used images found online for models, but senior Avery English found inspiration much closer to home. Her pencil drawing is of her and her dog, Indi. The work is titled “Indi,” and it won the First Place Award, 3rd Congressional District.

English and Indi are depicted in a happy, cozy embrace. English writes simply, “I feel dogs are a reliable source of love.”

The students are quick to give mentoring credit to their teacher. “He is so good to work with. And he knows so much. Ask him anything about art history—he knows everything. He gives such good advice on our artwork, but on other things too,” Carlston said of Petersen.

Petersen and art teacher Michelle McCowan helped the students with the logistics and details of entering the Springville show and others throughout the year. Requirements for framing, drop-off, and other hard deadlines are easier when a teacher is there to guide the students.

Principal Jennifer Christensen is excited for the artists. “This is amazing! Our students are extremely talented. It is so much fun to see them achieve these wonderful accomplishments.”

Olympus lacrosse returns for second sanctioned season Photos by City Journals staff

he boys lacrosse team trounced rival Skyline 15-3 in 2021. The 2022 game is slated for May 11 at Skyline. Olympus began the first year of sanctioned high school lacrosse on a tear, going 15-2 with only three of their wins by five goals or less. Its two losses came at the hands of the two finalists, Park City and champions Corner Canyon who defeated Olympus in the semifinals. Only the Titans’ quarterfinal 13-11 victory over Green Canyon had any of their victories in doubt. Olympus opens the 2022 campaign March 11 at home versus Westlake.

Through a partnership between the school and the local business community, 20 students will gain real-world experience each week by meeting with about 40 business owners and representatives, tour local companies, and be paired with a business leader as a mentor to learn entrepreneurial skills.

“I’m super excited; during the first semester, they will do a class project, which teaches students how to start a business and most of the time it’s more event-based, where they will think about the details of the event and what does it take,” GTI’s CEO program facilitator Erin Paulsen said. “The second semester, they actually start their own businesses, and it results in actual products or services that they sell at a trade show event we’ll hold at the end of the year.”

Interested students in Granite and other Salt Lake County school districts are invited to apply by March 14 for the program that will pick them up from a Granite high school and meet from 7:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. three days per week. A panel will select students without knowledge of their names or schools, but solely on the applications that include students rating themselves, answers to questions and letters of recommendations including one from a school counselor that addresses standing in school, attendance and if they’re hard workers, she said.

“I’m expecting the kids in CEO to want to learn; they see a value in it and want to connect,” Paulsen said adding that students will be evaluated by their understanding and proficiency on projects in the program where they will receive Career and Technical Education credit. “One of those projects may be here is $5, turn it into $100 by next week.

They have to think outside the box and figure out, how can I make this money?”

During the first semester, students will focus on a business or likely, a one-time event, such as a trivia night, murder-mystery, bowling or drive-in night. It will be decided on by the class and money raised from that can be used as seed money for individual businesses second term.

Some of those businesses may help students pay for college either by continuing it or selling it.

“For a lot of kids, this is going to be their opportunity to have a business during college and then they’re done; maybe it’ll just be a learning experience and then they’ll be done. We could see a very successful company come out of this, especially since they’ll have connections,” she said referring to the partnerships with local business leaders. “The high school entrepreneurship

Community business leaders play an active role as guest speakers, mentors, investors or to give tours to students, said Centeva chief finance officer and chief operating officer Matt Thomas, who is the chairman of the nine-member CEO program board. He was one who reached out to business chief executive officers, CFOs and others to get involved.

“We targeted companies and industries that would give a good variety of experiences to the kids in the class; there were a lot of people who are willing to help out,” he said.

“Everybody sees the value in getting some of that real-world experience earlier with some structure from the community and making those connections at an early age. The students are expanding their perspective as to what’s possible. I wish that I would have had that perspective and experience as a 17-yearold instead of having to stumble into that perspective later in life.”

Thomas said that many business leaders want to develop relationships in the community and this program allows for potential for partnerships or future employees.

“People are interested in the perspective of people from a younger generation as consumers and leaders from the next generation, so it is a two-way street,” he said. “I

think that entrepreneurship as a discipline doesn’t get enough attention. People assume that those who have that in their blood will jump in and figure it out. I think more and more people would do it if they knew how and if they saw it as a viable option and if they had a better sense of what the rewards are. These people are willing to share their experiences.”

Paulsen said that local businesses invest in the program, paying for bus transportation so students can tour companies weekly.

Those businesses involved in the program range from software companies to carpet cleaners, from restaurants and entertainment industries to credit unions and insurance companies.

“There are all kinds of different industries so they can explore and get ideas of ‘how can I improve an existing product and make a company out of that’ or maybe there’s a need that is lacking that they know of. We want students to think entrepreneurially instead of just checking the boxes and taking the test,” Paulsen said. “We’re wanting them to explore in a way that makes them think: ‘I could do this. I could solve this program and start my own business.’ We’re going to do it experience-based and ask students questions that provoke them to think different ways and solve the problems themselves.”

While Paulsen can help put students in touch with companies and even GTI programs to “match them with people who know that skills and know what they need to do that step,” students also will rely upon mentors in the business world. Mentors will review students’ business plans, look at their weekly progress, read students’ journal entries about their experiences in the weekly tours and in meetings with business leaders, and follow up with students about what

they’re learning.

During the weekly tours of businesses, students will learn how they got started, what they do, what people they serve so “they can start to think about their target market and how to reach them and how they may get started,” Paulsen said, adding that with guest speakers, students will learn firsthand about their experiences.

The year-end trade show will feature professional booths featuring students’ businesses and services and will serve as a fundraiser for start-up funds for next year’s students in the program.

Granite School District, which partnered with Midland Institute of Entrepreneurship to offer the CEO program, has taken the past year to set up this program.

Midland provides not only the experience it has gained from years of offering the program, but also materials, training and the website template. The institute also will help with retention of the program.

Paulsen said the CEO program has been successful in the Midwest, but this is the first in Utah. She has firsthand knowledge of the program as many members of her extended family are involved in it as mentors and board members, and as students trying to sell their products in Illinois.

“I’m seeing it from all angles and have seen what a cool program it is. It’s a whole community initiative,” she said.

“I’m excited about having it here. I hope that in a few years, we can open a CEO program at each high school. If we’re able to do that, we can involve each and every community as part of it. This is the perfect marriage between business and education; it’s a great way to support these students.” l

Are electric buses a viable solution for Little Cottonwood traffic problems?

A

group of local elected officials, community activists and college students boarded a bus last month for a ride up Little Cottonwood Canyon. Their goal? To show that electric buses can be a viable solution for the canyon’s traffic problems.

The Utah Department of Transportation is currently in the middle of the process of narrowing down its list of proposals. From an original list of five possibilities, the department narrowed its consideration down to two: an enhanced bus system (along with widening the roads in the canyon) and the construction of a gondola.

Throughout its Environmental Impact Statement report, UDOT’s analysis of the enhanced bus system presupposes that those buses would run on diesel fuel. An assumption that Cottonwood Heights City councilwoman Ellen Birrell says is based on a myth that electric buses don’t have what it takes to make it up the steep slopes of the canyon.

“We’re going to urge UDOT to revisit their assessment,” Birrell told the City Journals.

The bus ride was organized by the University of Utah student group, Students for the Wasatch. They coordinated with Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall to use an electric bus that her office borrowed from California for a few days to demonstrate its versatility and viability to local legislators and elected officials.

So how did the bus fare with the challenge of climbing Little Cottonwood Canyon?

“We zipped up!” Birrell said. “And it was so quiet we could use our inside voices. It was delightful.”

“I would describe it as clean, fast, quiet and comfortable,” said Sandy Mayor Monica Zoltanski.

“I was skeptical, to tell you the truth, whether it could handle the climb up Little Cottonwood Canyon, but this bus had no problem.”

Not only was the bus able to keep up with other traffic as it made its way up the mountain, but it was able to recharge its battery on the way down through a process called regenerative braking. Because of this, the bus was able to make it up and down the canyon using only 3% of its battery.

Alta Mayor Roger Bourke, who hopped on board the bus for the final few minutes of the ride, was impressed with the experience and touted the vehicle’s benefits for the environment.

“We are faced with a worldwide catastrophe if we don’t get a handle on these greenhouse gasses,” he said.

“And this is the way to get a handle on it. This can be charged with renewable energy, which we’re getting more and more of. That’s the future.”

Birrell noted that the solution to traffic problems in the canyon doesn’t necessarily have to be contained to one big project that costs hundreds of million dollars, like the gondola or road expansion. Instead, she suggested that a better strategy would be to adopt multiple smaller changes. One change she said has already started working is the ski resort’s implementation of reserved parking spots.

gestion problem this ski season,” she said. “Some of the logical and practical solutions that many of us want to see phased in, that would be much less expensive than a gondola or lane expansion, are already reducing the traffic.”

A fleet of electric buses could also theoretically be purchased and deployed by next ski season, noted Students for the Wasatch member Claudia Wiese.

“It can be an immediate solution, as opposed to spending years on a project,” she said. l

With new funds available, Holladay likely moving forward on playground remodel

ith a majority of the council signaling its approval, residents can most likely expect a new rubberized surface for the Holladay City Park this summer.

There was hesitation among councilmembers in January to fund a project that replaces the wood chips in the playground with an accessible rubberized surface. It would also create a wheelchair accessible pathway from the parking lot to the field.

Originally the project was budgeted at $165,000 but due to rising costs in labor and materials—as well as an initially low estimate—the project rose to $285,000.

Several councilmembers balked at the large dollar amount, cautious to use such a large sum on a playground that originally cost about $375,000.

But with the discretion allowed to use ARPA funds (American Rescue Plan Act)— which directs millions of dollars from the federal government to its state and local counterparts—the city would have $3.6 million from which to pull the money to cover the total cost or the difference.

Councilman Paul Fotheringham was one official questionable on spending the money, but with the new funding mechanism, was in favor.

“I liked it better when we had a restricted number of buckets from which to spend that money, because then it made more sense,” he said during the Feb. 10 council meeting. “But I won’t penalize it because all of a sudden the restrictions are off.”

Councilman Dan Gibbons also had reservations, and preferred to delay the decision until later in the spring so they could “see the bigger financial picture with other projects.”

“At the end of the day I would probably vote for it,” Gibbons said, later adding, “we do have the money available. Without the ARPA funds, I’d probably be more vocally opposed to it.”

Councilman Ty Brewer still had questions though despite the newly available ARPA funds. He said several constituents told him they didn’t want this because of the substantial cost.

“What we spend here is money that couldn’t be spent elsewhere,” he said. “I don’t love it frankly for those reasons. We could get by with what we have is the hard part for me.”

Sheryl Gillian, executive director for the Holladay Arts Council, said accessibility is a priority to her. Partly because the pathway would allow older, more elderly to better reach the park for summer concerts noting “every year somebody falls” descending the hill by the restrooms.

And partly because of the message she feels it sends.

“If you do not have an accessible playground surface, what you’re saying is everybody can play on that playground except

people who use wheelchairs,” she told the council.

Councilmembers Drew Quinn and Matt Durham remained in favor.

“I just think it’s an opportunity that

benefits a segment of our community that we should be looking out for,” Durham said.

Quinn worried putting off the project would cost more money in the future.

“I think the time is now,” she said.

Officially the vote is expected to take place on March 3, but city staff needed an answer since the contractor is already in place and putting it off further could push the Mayplanned construction back. l

Holladay City not immune to staffing shortage

cross the country, industries of all kinds are facing a labor shortage. From truck drivers in Oregon to recruits for the army, and Holladay is no different.

The Holladay City Council unanimously approved a resolution in February that will allow city officials to offer various incentives to both current and potential employees.

City administration can now offer hiring and retention bonuses along with acting pay (where an employee is essentially paid for fulfilling another role beyond their normal job).

New employees will be offered $1,000 signing bonus with an additional $1,000 bonus at their one-year mark.

Current employees receive a $1,000 retention bonus and an additional bonus six months later if still employed. The same goes for part-time employees with an adjusted percentage.

Seasonal employees for the parks department will receive a $500 hiring bonus with an additional bonus if they complete the season.

“We’re just wanting to be very, very aggressive in addressing these issues we’re having in the market right now,” Mayor Rob Dahle said during the Feb. 10 council meeting. “It’s everywhere, not just the private sector, it’s the public sector.”

Nearby cities are also dealing with the issue, City Manager Gina Chamness told the council in January. In mid-February almost 300 municipality positions were listed on the Utah League of Cities and Towns website.

Vacant positions for Holladay can be found in the community and economic development department as well as maintenance positions. In January, Chamness told the council that they’d had a planner technician position posted for three months and hadn’t received any serious applications for the senior planner position. In February, multiple candidates had applied for the planner technician, but still “no luck with the senior planner position, we’re going to have to get creative,” Chamness told the council in the Feb. 10 council meeting.

The city uses a database to assess market conditions to ensure they are being competitive in what they offer.

It was also important, as Chamness noted in January, that the city keeps “the valuable staff we have.”

Dahle said this resolution hopefully sends a message to city employees.

“We should use every tool we have available to us to get and retain the people we have,” he said in January.

The city won’t have to pull money out of its regular budget for the bonuses either, the mayor said, since it’s already assigned to those positions.

“It’s just moving money from current wages into incentive programs,” he said.

In the city staff report, Chamness noted they set some parameters on the acting pay. That it is in “extraordinary circumstances, when 20% or more of staff positions are unfilled, the city manager is authorized to provide hiring and/or retention bonuses.”

The approved resolution is one piece in the city’s sixmonth budget process this year analyzing what Dahle described as his No. 1 priority: the staffing structure of the city, notably with the police department.

“This will help stabilize us where we are,” he said. “And allow us to look at a market review of our positions.” l

In fact, it has been designated by the Arbor Day Foundation as a “Tree City USA.” Holladay is blessed with an abundant and healthy canopy of mature trees that provide shade, character and beauty to our community. The City takes active steps to protect its trees and to encourage tree maintenance and replacement. Most city residents know that Holladay is a tree friendly place, but may not fully understand the specific provisions of the City’s Tree Preservation Ordinance (the “Ordinance”). Under the Ordinance, certain trees are protected and may only be removed after obtaining a permit.

These protected trees include: • Trees listed as Community Trees or Heritage Trees.

• Trees with a trunk over 2” in width [caliper] which are intended for removal as part of a contemplated construction project (including remodeling) on a property

• Trees on City property or in a public right-of-way, including o Trees in a city park o “Street Trees”, located adjacent public and private streets o Waterway Trees located within specified distances of streams, canals or ditches.

The Ordinance requires a permit for the removal of any protected tree, unless the tree is damaged, certifiably dead or dying, is essential in order to allow for property development, or presents a public safety risk.

To obtain a permit to remove a protected tree, a resident would submit an application and fee to the Holladay Community and Economic Development Department. The permit application requires a description of which trees the property owner intends to remove and certification of the reason for removal (i.e., the tree is dying or poses a safety hazard). The applications also requires submission of a “Tree Canopy Sustainability Plan.” This Plan calls for an inventory of the tree canopy in the proposed removal area, including photographs or other depictions of the tree canopy within the last year. It will also contain a list of replacement trees, with an estimate of canopy coverage at tree maturity. Finally, if applicable, the Plan should describe the anticipated earth disturbance around the proposed removal area and include notes about proposed permanent or temporary fencing, excavation, grading, or other construction activities. The Plan is designed to protect the existing tree canopy and replace canopy where removal is appropriate.

Under certain circumstances, replacement of protected trees can be done through replacement at another location or property or through other pre-approved mitigation efforts.

Early Winter Heat and Late Spring Frost

By Travis Jones, Holladay Tree Committee Chair It is becoming more common to leave the snow blower in the shed all winter and not have to scrape frost off the windshield every morning while the vehicle warms up. But what does this warmer winter temperature do to our trees?

Any significant change in temperature or weather can cause stress to trees.

When early spring temperatures warm up beyond normal, buds on trees begin to swell and new blooms or shoots arrive early. This new growth is exposed and can be easily damaged if temperatures quickly drop back down below freezing. After the damage occurs most trees will bounce back and resprout new leaf buds later in the season, but flowering and fruit trees are most vulnerable as they may not produce buds again until next year.

Frost damage will typically turn new growth brown a few days after the freeze.

This can lead to increased stress making a tree more susceptible to future infestations from insects, fungus, and other pests.

TIPS: 1. Select appropriate trees for our hardiness zone. Trees on the fringe of their temperature range are typically more susceptible to late frost. Always plant the right tree in the right place.

2. After the freeze risk is gone, ensure your trees are getting sufficient water and remember trees prefer infrequent deep soakings.

3. Mulch around your trees to store moisture, provide nutrients, and prevent damage.

4. Prune out any dead, diseased, or damaged branches in early spring to assist with new growth.

5. Consult with a local ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) certified arborist.

In Utah we can bank on some spring snow and a return of the cold just when we are finally ready to break out the flip flops and head to the desert. When spring temperatures suddenly become frigid again, many trees will experience frost damage.

Frost damage impacts all trees in some way, but fortunately most trees can fully recover with a little help from their friends.

By Chief Justin Hoyal, Unified Police Dept of Holladay On January 29, 2022, several burglaries were reported at The Station condos in Holladay. The Unified Police Department (UPD) was called to investigate the cases. Detectives from the UPD’s Holladay Precinct began sifting through the evidence that was left behind by the suspect(s), including reviewing hours of video surveillance. Detectives worked tirelessly for two weeks on the case. With the assistance of other units at the UPD to

include Forensics, Property & Evidence, Mental Health Unit, Major Investigations Unit, Midvale Precinct, and the Kearns Precinct they were able to identify a primary suspect in the case.

Detectives served a search warrant at the suspect’s home in West Jordan. They also served a simultaneous search warrant

During those search warrants detectives recovered hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen property. This property included bicycles, power tools, ski equipment, firearms, sports memorabilia, dental equipment, construction equipment and dozens of other types of items.

Detectives have spent many hours going through all the evidence collected and believe it has come from burglaries not only at The Station, but all across Salt Lake County. We have identified several individuals who were victims of burglary by this suspect. We have been able to return a lot of property to these victims. There is still a large amount of property we are trying to reunite with its rightful owner. We would encourage everyone in the community to take this opportunity to go through your homes and document make, model and serial numbers from your valuable items. By Capt. Dan Brown, Unified Fire Authority With the weather warming up, we will be spending more time outdoors enjoying it. One question I receive a lot is about fire pits. The fire code allows small recreational fires in Holladay. The fuel area cannot exceed 3 feet in diameter by 2 feet in height. Burning is limited to dry, clean, natural materials. That means no garbage, plastics, rubber, oils, or construction waste. Recreational fires not in an improved fire pit or portable outdoor fireplace such as a campfire must be 25 feet away from structures or combustible materials. If it is in an improved (not just a hole) fire pit, bbq, outdoor fireplace, that distance is reduced to 15 feet of clearance. Liquid propane or natural gas fire pits must have 10 feet of clearance. It is also required to have a fire attended and have a means of extinguishment readily available such as a garden hose or bucket of water. You must also verify that it is a green burn day. It seems like we are in a constant state of drought and by following these rules, you can greatly reduce the risk of accidental fire. Holladay resident illustrates a children’s book

I

f you had told Holladay resident Marisa Jenny that she’d one day collaborate on a children’s book with her sister-in-law, she wouldn’t have believed it. But the writing duo published “Summer at 4 Steps Way” last summer after teaming up virtually.

While Marisa lives in Utah, her sisterin-law Kristina Jenny lives in Ohio. Marisa’s expertise is in finance and math, and Jenny’s is nutrition. Neither woman has a background in creative writing or art. That didn’t stop Jenny from penning the book or Marisa from picking up her colored pencils to illustrate “Summer at 4 Steps Way” that tells the stories of friendship between a chipmunk, a squirrel and a mouse, and their adventures.

“We have a cabin in the north woods of Wisconsin,” Marisa said. “We would go up there and Kristina would tell her kids these stories. We started collaborating on illustrating and writing the stories and then we got published. Everything fell in line to create this book.”

The book consists of three stories meant to teach the values of sharing, kindness, community, giving and receiving. In one instance, chipmunk receives a raspberry on his front porch, but doesn’t know who left it.

ith a crown of blonde hair and brown eyes much wiser than his 16 years, Ezekiel (Zeke) Sokoloff softly and matter-of-factly answers questions about his remarkable life. He has been studying the violin since he was five years old.

Sokoloff has been studying at Utah’s Gifted Music School for six years and is home-schooled, which gives him more time to focus on his instrument. Currently, he is preparing for college auditions. “It’s so unpredictable, what happens,” he said. “It really surprises me. Sometimes the teacher you really want is just not at the audition. It’s a lot more subjective than you would think it would be.”

Honing his technique in part by playing Niccolo Paganini’s “Caprices” (difficult works written by Paganini for solo violin), Sokoloff is realistic about reaching emotional depths due to his young years. “It’s something I always work on every day,” he said.

“And once your technique is good, then it frees you up so much to be able to play.”

Sokoloff further stated, “I like listening to other players and put in as much as I can right now. And obviously, that (emotional depths) will evolve over time.”

Beethoven is one of his favorite composers, and a portrait of the musical maestro dominates Sokoloff’s bedroom. “His music is so dynamic and dramatic,” Sokoloff said.

“He has written pieces like your sonatas and his violin concertos.” Sokoloff favors Chopin as well.

In some ways, the COVID-19 pandemic has helped him focus more on his practicing, but he has not been able to perform live on a regular basis. “I think that I just try my best to connect with people through music as much as possible,” Sokoloff said.

Once he graduates college, he would like to start competing and performing internationally.

Life for Sokoloff is not all work and no play. He enjoys reading, playing videogames and basketball with friends.

He has given back to the community frequently by performing at live concerts.

was eight when I ran away from home. It was the summer of ’76 and my mother did the unspeakable. She banned a book in our home.

In the stack of books I’d checked out at the library, there was a paperback copy of “Jaws” I instinctually hid from Mom because she could be irrational. The book cover, with its looming shark and nearly-nude swimmer, might make her think the novel wasn’t “proper” for an 8-year-old.

With a plateful of homemade oatmeal cookies, I sat on my bed engrossed in shark attacks. My bedroom door opened and Mom (without knocking!) entered my room to put clothes away. Her mouth dropped open when she saw what I was reading. She grabbed it out of my hands and banned the book from the house.

How dare she!

I fumed and realized there was only one answer to such blatant oppression. I got my red suitcase and packed a nightgown, a change of clothes, my toothbrush and a Nancy Drew book. I stomped down the stairs, ignoring Mom as she stood in the kitchen doorway with her arms crossed.

Before I walked out of the house forever, I told her I couldn’t live with her cruelty any longer. I walked two blocks to my Aunt Judy’s house and announced I was moving in because Mom was an unreasonable tyrant.

I stayed the night, knowing Mom must regret her terrible behavior. I figured by the next day, she would be frantic with worry.

Served her right. (I later learned she’d called my aunt to let her know I was heading her way.)

When I returned home, I asked her if I could read “Jaws.” She said no. You can bet your sweet bookends I found a copy of “Jaws” and secretly read it cover to cover.

My effort to read banned books didn’t stop there. As I got older, I tore through Judy Blume's books, inhaled the “Flowers in the Attic” series, and absorbed “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Twice. My cousin and I would sit on the bookstore floor, reading salacious parts of popular bodice-ripper novels written by the queen of romance, Kathleen Woodiwiss.

I make it a point to read banned books, buy banned books, promote banned books and encourage my daughters to do the same.

I figure if a book is so powerful it has to be banned or burned, that’s a book I need to read.

Anything that gets people’s knickers twisted and touches a literary nerve goes on my toread list.

Parents and lawmakers are increasingly trying to create laws that shelve books that don’t fit in with their (mostly conservative) ideals. When that happens, society loses. Didn’t you read the (ironically) banned “Fahrenheit 451?”

I agree that 8-year-olds don’t make the best choices, but if we control the curriculum, frame the narrative, and put a conservative slant on history, we’re not doing those 8-yearolds any favors.

In January, when a school board in Tennessee banned the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel, “Maus,” parents pushed back.

The Salt Lake County Library System has dozens of copies of the Holocaust story where the Jews are depicted as mice, Germans as cats, and Americans as dogs.

I was happy to see it has hundreds of hold requests.

Looks like I’m not the only one making sure I read things that make me uncomfortable.
