CONCERTS ON THE COMMONS BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER

W

arm summer weather and live music are the perfect combination for an evening of fun in the community. The Holladay Arts Council and Holladay Bank & Trust present Concerts on the Commons, a free concert series that started in July and runs through the end of August.

The arts council partnered with Excellence in the Community to find local musicians and give them a chance to interact with residents.

“We started the free concert series a few years back as a way to bring our community together through the arts,” said Holladay Mayor Rob Dahle. “Our first concert drew 70 residents. The first two this year, averaged 700.

We act on the assumption that residents want to gather as a community. We believe the continuing growth and popularity of our concerts corroborate this assumption. The more opportunities we can create as local leaders to bring our citizens together in the ‘public square,’ the healthier our communities will be.”

All concerts begin at 8 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

The events are held at Holladay City Hall Park (4580 S. 2300 East), just west of Holladay City Hall. Guests can bring chairs, blankets, picnics and soft drinks to enjoy an evening of musical entertainment.

Home visitation program helps parents and families with young children

O

ne day in June, Lisia Satini was working with a young client. She asked the 3-year-old boy to name the plastic animals she held up, and was delighted when he named them all.

“This was a child who could not speak before. His verbal skills were like ‘uh, uh,’” Satini said. “Now he’s able to say ‘zebra!’”

Satini is the home visitation program supervisor for Children’s Service Society of Utah (CSS). The home visitation program offers parent education to families throughout pregnancy and until the child enters kindergarten.

Satini had originally been working with the child’s older sibling.

“The parent was able to pick up on the cues. She knew something was up,” Satini said. “We were able to detect at a young age that he was on the autism spectrum. So we screened him and saw a child development (specialist). We were able to consult with the parent about seeing a pediatrician and now we have him in an IEP (Individualized Education Program).”

Satini continued working with the family and recalls another recent visit with that child.

“He had the potty training seat on his head,” Satini said with a laugh. “You know, I’m sure it was clean, his mom was letting him. He’s working on potty training and this is how he’s connecting with it. He has the seat and he’s saying ‘circle’ because he loves shapes. I love it, going from where he was at couldn’t say words to now he knows shapes.

Just the way he was connecting through the screen was awesome.”

The home visitation program uses the Parents as Teachers curriculum, a method used throughout the United States and six other countries. Caregivers learn how to overcome challenges involved with parent-

ing to help children ages 0 to 5 reach their full potential. Certified parent educators like Satini are trained on how to apply scientific information on early brain development into specific, practical advice for parents. For example, parents learn how to find teachable moments in everyday life to help improve their child’s language, social, intellectual and language skills.

“This program, now that I know what it is, I recommend it to everyone,” Satini said.

“You’re able to learn about the family and how it functions. Whether you’re a single parent home, two parent home, just a parent.

It’s not easy. Children are not easy. We’re all still learning.”

The parent educators usually visit twice a month, or once a week in the case of single parent households.

“I didn’t know, besides just going to the doctor, that these are the milestones my children need to be at,” Satini said. “And knowing the statistics of what it does when you read to your child. It sets them up at an early age to be able to perform in the school system.”

Along with lessons and advice, the educators offer screenings to assess the child’s development as well as connections to other resources that are available.

“Right now we serve refugee families, Pacific Islanders, Spanish-speaking families, and also teen parents,” Satini said. “We have paraeducators trained to provide that culturally-sound connection where families can feel comfortable.”

Of course, challenges arose at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In our curriculum we strongly push parent engagement. We talk a lot about limiting screen time,” Satini said. “But with the pandemic we had to start offering virtual visits, so then of course we’re going back to

the screen. We went through a transition in the beginning with families not having the right technology. It was not easy doing visits through the phone.”

In 2020, CSS organized fundraising campaigns and provided Chromebooks for all of the families in the home visitation program. But even with the new technology there were hiccups.

“Visits are an hour long and we’d use most of that training them on how to get set up,” Satini said. “But now we have parents who have that skill. We can say that’s a plus.

We have kids interacting on the screen and attention spans are a little longer. These are the little milestones that make it worth it.”

Home visitation paraeducators are just beginning to make arrangements to visit families in person again, as long as everyone involved feels comfortable with meeting.

Virtual visits will continue to be an option.

Representatives from CSS are back to attending community events to let parents know about the home visitation program, and social media and word of mouth also drive participation. Interested parents can visit www.cssutah.org/services/home-visitation/ to fill out a referral form.

“When we visit with these families, we learn how their family functions,” Satini said. “If they need resources we’re able to help them tap into all of these connections, from mortgage relief, rent relief, to free lunches in the summers.”

Most families working with the home visitation program live in Salt Lake County,

but educators have begun working in Davis County as well.

“To me, home visitation is the true prevention program that exists in our community,” said Encarni Gallardo, the executive director of CSS. “The program puts educators and community health workers in their homes. They see where the struggles are, and offer the resources the families need.

It tailors support to the family to ensure the children are safe and receiving the support they need to be ready for school.”

“We always say CSS is the oldest child welfare agency in Utah,” Gallardo continued. “We’ve been around since 1884 and we’ve adapted services to meet the needs of the community as things change.”

Today, CCS offers several programs in addition to home visitation: adoption services, Grandfamilies Kinship Care, and Care about Childcare, which offers services to parents and providers.

The organization’s newest venture is the Building Blocks Childcare Center in Taylorsville, which offers free and reduced cost childcare and preschool to low-income families in partnership with the United Way of Salt Lake.

“I’ve worked with families of all kinds and all different incomes,” Gallardo said.

“Children have a universal language. All children want to succeed in life. To me what CSS does is put a voice to those children.

of our future. Let’s give them the opportunity they need to stay healthy and safe.”

Satini’s own children are nearly grown.

When they were young she was a stay-athome mom. She later worked in community health. In 2016, she joined CSS as a specialist for working with Pacific Islander fami-

lies.

“It’s the same work, except I’m now going into homes,” Satini said. “My baby is now 13, so I didn’t get to take advantage of it.

However, I do love this curriculum because I still apply a lot of things with my teenage kids. I believe connection never stops with your children.” l

Seek shelter from the heat at county-owned facilities

T

riple-digit temperatures and excessive heat warnings have become common during the summer in northern Utah. These conditions can be deadly to those without reliable access to air-conditioning.

Thanks to a partnership between Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services, Salt Lake County Library Services and Salt Lake County Parks & Recreation, anyone can seek shelter from the heat in one of 36 county-owned facilities. Adults age 60 and older can use an additional 18 senior center locations.

The Cool Zone locations are air conditioned and open to the public. Anyone can cool off, hydrate and learn about other resources and programs.

Loriann Warner, manager of the Midvale Senior Center, reports that older adults come to the center who either don’t have air conditioning in their home or the unit they do have is not working.

“If a senior is staying at home in a house with no ability to cool the space, temperatures escalate above 100 degrees and if the senior is not drinking enough water they can become dehydrated and ill,” Warner said. “Dehydration due to excess heat can negatively impact the health of a senior.”

Warner recommends coming to the cen-

ter for a class, staying for lunch, and following that with time to exercise to take advantage of the facility during the hottest hours of the day.

Most senior centers are open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. Libraries and recreation centers are open on weekends and have longer hours—as late as 9 p.m. at some libraries and 10 p.m. at some recreation centers.

Libraries are free and open to all. Recreation centers may require fees to participate in programs or activities, but anyone may sit in the lobby or entryway to cool off.

“Two weeks ago a homeless gentleman visited the River’s Bend Senior Center to escape the heat and rehydrate,” said Afton January, communications manager for Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services. “Staff showed him around the center because he is over 60 and eligible to visit and participate in the programs there. It also happened to be the date of the primary election, so he was able to register to vote for the first time.”

The Cool Zone program started in 2014 in response to concerns about older adults’ vulnerability to heat-related illness.

“Aging and Adult Services case managers and front-line staff recognized a need among our older population, namely that a lot of lower-income older adults don’t have air conditioning at home to help manage hot

summer temperatures,” January said. “Our teams mobilized and started two initiatives: one to distribute fans and portable AC units to our homebound clientele, and the cool zones, which are aimed at people who can leave home and are mobile enough to visit a senior center, library or county recreation center.”

Sean Bailey, communications and public relations manager for the county, was with the Department of Aging & Adult Services at that time. “At the inception, we realized that we needed to offer more locations as to not limit the program to people 60 years or older,” he said.

More condos, less office space: Canyon Centre development changes course

ight years after the first development plans for the Canyon Centre Development were approved by the Cottonwood Heights City Council, there is only one remaining phase of development to be completed. However, it may have to be altered based on the challenges of the current social climate.

On June 21, Managing Member of Canyon Centre Capital LLC Chris McCandless spoke with city councilmembers during a Community Development and Renewal Agency meeting about the challenges they have been facing and described a proposed solution.

“COVID has made a significant difference and it’s hurt,” McCandless said. “This is the longest we’ve taken to put together a project and complete it.”

The Canyon Centre development plans approved in 2014 included four levels of professional use office space. However, as working from home has become much more of a norm, office space is not the commodity it used to be. McCandless has run into difficulty finding buyers for office space.

“We had the building sold and under contract to a gentleman who couldn’t perform, and it took us about three years to get the property back from him,” McCandless said. “I don’t want to keep waiting for office space to work.”

Instead, there is much higher demand for housing. The Canyon Centre developers would like to amend the development plans to eliminate half of the office space and incorporate housing units instead.

“The proposal that is up is for modification to office building. If there is support for exploring this, there would be a process for a conditional use permit, public hearing at the Planning Commission, and, based on analysis, it would require renegotiation with all the taxing entities,” explained Community and Economic Development Director Mike Johnson.

“I don’t want to fight. I’d rather just figure out what’s going to work for everybody and do that,” McCandless said. “We think two levels of residential condominiums will probably work best.”

Instead of four levels of 100% professional use office space, the proposed amendment would allow for 55% professional use office space and 45% residential condominiums. The first two levels would be reserved for the previously approved office space, with the third and fourth levels incorporating condominiums.

The last level would be reserved for rooftop gardens.

“The Canyon Centre HOA sent an email to us and they are in full support of what is being proposed,” said Mayor Mike Weichers.

If the two levels were approved for condominiums, McCandless estimates space for at least 10 different units, with potential of up to 21 units. These would be one million dollar condos.

Facts about the Canyon Centre Development: It’s a $30-million structure with the cost spiking $3 million in the last six months.

Construction costs for one single parking stall are estimated at $37,000.

The apartment complex went up from 112 units to 140 units.

There will be a spa and cycling facilities.

A retail facility under the hotel will be leased by the owners of Root’d. They will have coffee and small food sources.

The Break, a sports bar and restaurant, will be next to Eight Settlers. They plan to open within the next four months. building height. Office space typically requires 15 feet for each floor of office space, while housing units require 12 feet per floor.

“It would be a shorter building,” McCandless said. “It could be the same height as the hotel.”

In addition, there would be less traffic.

McCandless and his team ran a traffic impact study to understand the potential implications of utilizing the space for mixed-use instead of sole office space. They found that there would be 2,000 less vehicles in the area per month with 101 fewer vehicle trips per day. More parking would be available for public use as well, as the condominiums would only require 50 parking stalls.

“To sum up: the positive aspects that have been identified are parking opportunities for adjacent residential areas, building height reductions, and less projected traffic,” said City Manager Tim Tingey.

However, there would be a detriment to the Tax Increment Area (TIA) financing for the project. In 2019, the Canyon Centre was estimated at $51 million.

“The implications of the tax revenue would be a little less,” McCandless said.

Today, projections for the Canyon Centre are closer to $58 million. If the remaining development remained professional use office space, the estimated worth would be $63.2 million.

“We’ll be losing $5 million in taxable value,” said Councilmember Shawn Newell.

Johnson clarified that the trigger date had already passed, and the city had already begun collecting revenue. “We are actively collect-

ing tax increment and the longer there’s not a building there, the less increment we collect.”

Councilmember Ellen Birrell voiced her concern over the potential of short-term rentals if owner-occupancy was not required for the condominiums.

“The zoning won’t allow for short-term rentals,” McCandless said. “But people are still going to do it.”

McCandless mentioned that the proposed amendment would be a harder route for them to pursue overall, but he believes a mixed-use office residential space to be a better solution for the community.

“There are definitely challenges regarding the process of going through the other entities involved with the TIA,” McCandless said.

He’ll have to amend the development plans with every single one of the entities involved and attend all the public hearings.

“No one wants to see it done more than I do,” McCandless stressed. “We never abandon our commitments to municipalities, we’ve never defaulted on a project and I don’t want to make this the first one.”

“I’m ready to say move forward with the proposed amendment,” concluded Weichers. l

Granite Education Foundation operates food pantries to combat summer hunger

F

ood insecurity is often cited as an invisible problem. It effects children everywhere, and yet, it’s not always evident that a child is at risk of missing a meal. During the school year, children who might not have access to food otherwise, rely on school for nourishment. The summer months, which should bring joy and freedom to children, suddenly become stressful and scary.

“Nothing is scarier than food insecurity,” The Granite Education Foundation said via their Facebook page. “Granite will operate three Community Food Pantries throughout the summer months.”

The foundation is one of many organizations trying to help combat summer hunger. Summer, with its scorching temperatures and long days, already make it difficult for students to stay fed, let alone hydrated.

Summer food pantries are a necessity during a season that often gets overlooked.

Here in Utah, the summer months are when donations are at their lowest. In fact, major providers like the Utah Food Bank rely on the giving season, winter, to make up for these sizeable gaps.

While the food bank is a great resource for those seeking food, its location isn’t always ideal for those who may not have the money to spend on excess transit, especially during the current inflation crisis with high

gasoline prices. “It falls back on the community, and we want to do our part to make sure we can take care of those in direct need. If you, or someone you know, needs assistance during the summer, [they can visit our website for more information on locations and times],” the foundation stated on Facebook.

According to the foundation, over 54% of students in Granite District are at an economic disadvantage. Moreover, major fallout from the pandemic and inflation have pushed more families into the brink of poverty than in years prior. Not only does the foundation help with providing food, but they also offer students backpacks, shoes, and other essential items to help students succeed in school.

“As a school and as a district, we have such an amazing opportunity to create an environment where students feel loved, safe, and taken care of. It really does begin with helping meet those basic needs,” writes a social worker in the District.

Other organizations are running food pantries this year too. K2 the Church and the Southeast Christian Church also run a monthly pantry. However, many of these pantries conclude at the end of July, leaving August a vulnerable time.

City officials looking for resident feedback

What’s your legacy?

I

n an effort to gather more feedback from city residents, city officials have identified two methods they intend to use to gauge public sentiment.

The city will send out a survey to residents likely in September with a report those results expected in December.

Likewise, Mayor Rob Dahle said they should begin doing town halls again. Whether with an individual councilmember and their given district or a combination of two councilmembers.

“I love to sit in on those and listen to what is going on in individual districts, what’s on their mind, what’s good or not good, things to be concerned about,” he said during the July city council meeting.

Dahle said the fall would be the ideal time to do them, though city staff suggested doing town halls after the survey report, which would push them to early 2023.

He said it’s a great way to “get feedback” and see “how people feel about the direction the city is going in and any common concerns among the residents we’re not aware of.” l

COUNCIL CORNER The Holladay Foundation: Such potential!

By Council Member Ty Brewer Having been raised in Holladay, one cultural element for which I’m especially grateful is the spirit of charity and goodwill that I’ve seen offered throughout my life by so many Holladay residents!

As a 10-year-old, I remember masses showing up to help sandbag neighbor’s lots when Big Cottonwood Creek burst its banks in the floods of ’83. I know of many elderly residents whose neighbors clear their driveways of snow or regularly share meals with them. Youth service projects are commonplace, such as painting the pergolas at City Hall or cladding stone to cement bridge barriers to give added character. A good neighbor coordinated families making over a thousand sandwiches weekly for about a year for a downtown shelter. When attending Olympus High’s awards ceremony in May, I was impressed to see over $80k in scholarships provided by local residents to OHS seniors. Are you familiar with Friend 2 Friend, a Holladay-based youth service club?

It’s amazing! Holladay is full of residents, many with considerable means, who recognize their stewardships, serve others, and create, lead and/or contribute to many wonderful charitable organizations.

Holladay residents love to serve and are incredibly generous with their time and money. What a beautiful thing!

Much of what differentiates government from charitable funding is the former being required of all and the latter, being voluntarily given.

While taxation has its proper place, consider the difference between givers and receivers! The exacting of taxes can create sentiments of resentment by those taxed and entitlement by those standing to benefit. Charity, on the other hand, generally humbles those who give and evokes great gratitude in those it benefits. It is through charity, I believe, that the truest sense of community is fostered.

Years ago, a group of good Holladay residents organized The Holladay Foundation, a 501(c)3, hoping it could serve as a vehicle through which generous residents could finance initiatives to benefit our community. It was through this foundation that funds were raised to supplement the development of the children’s playground at City Hall. The foundation also contributes to the Holladay concert series and has contributed to a Holladay Youth Council project. I’m so thankful for those who have contributed voluntarily and generously to these initiatives!

An ideal that would be wonderful to see exemplified in Holladay is for our municipal government to increasingly only fund truly essential municipal services while a thriving and vibrant Holladay Foundation finances community amenities and events and helps fill needs for Holladay’s underprivileged. Park City has a community foundation that states it has brought over $30M in total impact to Park City and Summit County since 2007. Imagine what we in Holladay might do!

The Holladay Foundation has tremendous potential but needs to be reinvigorated! We need people to come together to champion its cause.

Adopt a Catch Basin It’s a great day to check the stormwater catch basin grates on your street! If there are leaves or debris covering the catch basin grate, rake them up now. Don’t sweep or blow your leaves into gutters or canals. If you have a catch basin in your neighborhood, adopt it and keep it clear of leaves and debris. Could someone on your block use a hand with their leaves? Adopt their catch basin to help.

Speeding? Please Slow Down

By Chief Justin Hoyal, UPD Holladay Precinct Over the last several months we have continually heard stories in the media of people driving at extremely high rates of speed all across Utah. We have even heard the tragedies of people being killed due to excessive speed. Unfortunately, we have recently seen these kinds of excessive speeds here in Holladay. We have also had an increased number of complaints from our community about people speeding in their neighborhoods.

At the Unified Police Department’s Holladay Precinct, we have been actively working with the community to help address these concerns. Over the last several months we have been responding to each of the concerned neighborhoods and tried to influence motorists to slow down.

In addition, we have done several directed enforcement operations where we had officers focus specifically on streets that are seeing continued speeding problems and complaints.

As the school year starts once again, we want to ensure the safety of all our children as they go to and from school. We want to remind everyone that the speed limits in our neighborhoods are 25 MPH, unless otherwise posted. In addition, when the school zone lights are flashing, the speed is 20 MPH. As you travel through school zones, please watch for crossing guards. They do all they can to make sure that the children cross the street safely. Watch for their direction to stop. We have had many instances where motorists drive around the crossing guards while they are holding their stop signs. The crossing guards only stop traffic when kids are about to cross or are crossing the street. Driving around the crossing guard only puts the kids’ safety in jeopardy.

We do not want our children to have to worry about the way others are driving while going to and from school. As a father myself, I want nothing more than for our children to be able to go to school, get an education and feel safe. Please do your part to help ensure they get to school safely. Officers will be strictly enforcing the speed limits in our school zones to ensure our students arrive at school and focus on what they are there for, their education. Additionally, as we have been throughout the summer, we will continue to be present in our neighborhoods and around the city to enforce the posted speed limits.

In the end, our goal is to keep everyone safe. We do not want to have any preventable tragedies due to unsafe driving in our community. We want to work together to keep Holladay a great and safe community to live, work and recreate.

Slow the Flow to Save Water During Times of Dryness

By Samantha DeSeelhorst, Sustainability Analyst Summer 2022 has brought one of the worst droughts on record to Utah, with most of the state experiencing extreme drought, and some areas experiencing exceptional drought—a term which indicates the greatest intensity of drought as measured by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Whether used to support essential health and hygiene needs, or to enable beloved hobbies such as snow sports, rafting, and waterskiing, water is closely linked to our quality of life. As drought becomes more common in the Western United States, it’s critical to develop greater water resilience, in order to protect this invaluable resource.

What does it mean to be drought resilient? Central Utah Water Conservancy District explains, “drought-resilient individuals, households, and communities are better able to adjust to drought and unpredictable climate patterns… should less water be available during a given year, those that are drought-resilient will be better prepared.” Consider the following strategies in addressing drought resilience at home: 1. IRRIGATE LESS As drought conditions intensify, water providers may institute watering restrictions. Check with your water provider regularly for updates on their protocols. To determine which water provider serves your address, visit www.deq.utah.gov/drinking-water/water-systemsearch-form. When deciding where to cut back, prioritize watering trees first, followed by shrubs, perennials, annuals, and then grass. Following this order will help protect the plants which perform the most important ecosystem functions for your yard and the community.

For additional landscape water savings, consider a yard retrofit which incorporates drought-resistant plants. Waterwise species require less water to begin with, and can survive, and even thrive during extended periods of dryness. 2. IDENTIFY LEAKS Water waste isn’t always obvious. Leaky fixtures, appliances, and pipes can quietly waste gallons of water each day. An unexpected spike in your water bill could be the result of a hidden leak, so stay alert for water leaks by checking your water usage regularly.

Leaks can also be detected through changes in water pressure, identification of damp patches, and mildewy smells. When in doubt, get in touch with a plumber to discuss leak detection.

3. SWIM SMARTER One of the best places to spend a summer’s day can also be a culprit of water waste.

Keep backyard swimming pools covered when not in use to prevent unnecessary water loss through evaporation. Additionally, by keeping the water level 3-4 inches below the pool’s fill level, you’ll avoid overfilling, which lends way to water wasted through splashing.

Don’t just stop watering, and please don’t put down naught but rocks.

Keeping your soil healthy is of the utmost importance. If your soil is healthy, your plants will be healthy.

Healthy soil absorbs rainwater like a sponge, it sequesters carbon, and it provides a habitat for all kinds of beneficial microbes, fungi, and critters.

Unhealthy dry soil will repel water, and is essentially devoid of life, exacerbating drought conditions even more.

While working on keeping your soil healthy, remember that trees are your best friends for keeping your local environs cool and mild, your soil protected, and local wildlife happy. Ensure excellent tree health by watering your trees deeply, but not too frequently. Newly planted trees (within the last ~3 years) need to be watered more, typically 2-3 times a week, depending on species and soil conditions. Older, well-established trees would like a good, very thorough drink every 4-6 weeks.

Just make sure to keep your trees healthy by continuing to water them, as they will help save water in the rest of your landscape, while also cleaning our air, lowering your A/C bill, improving your mental and physical health, and building equity in your property. Trees and native plants have deep root systems to help hold water in the soil, and a nice thick layer of wood bark mulch will further help retain water, keep soil temperatures cooler, prevent soil erosion, and prevent weeds.

Low-cost dental clinic helps transform smiles for children and adults

I

n 2019, the Charitable Health Clinic operated by Midvale Community Building Community (CBC) was busy: an average of 200 medical or dental visits per month. A few months into the pandemic that number increased, and now the number of total visits has doubled.

“June (2021) is when we started getting absolutely slammed,” said Mauricio Agramont, the executive director of Midvale CBC. “People started being ready to go back to get medical and dental services. Everybody who had delayed treatment for so long, they all came. A lot of people lost their job or their insurance.”

A few months later, Dr. Priscila Bautista began volunteering.

Originally from Brazil, Bautista came to the United States with her husband and three children in 2016. Though she graduated from dental school more than 20 years ago, Bautista needed to complete a two-year residency and work 6,000 hours to be fully licensed to practice dentistry here.

“I’m an international dentist,” Bautista said. “I need to build up hours working as a dentist and the only way I can do this is as a volunteer. It’s amazing helping those people who need it. So I decided to stay here full time, every day, all day long. Some Saturdays, some nights.”

Soon after Bautista arrived, the clinic was also able to upgrade the dental equipment.

“We used to work with portable dental units,” Agramont said. “Now we have four full working chairs with a vacuum pump and compressor. We’ve improved our electronic medical records system and that has really changed the quality of the experience. Before, our capacity to serve wasn’t as great. We had to develop X-rays. Now we are digital. That is improving the experience of our volunteer dentists.”

The clinic offers all the services of a private clinic: fillings, root canals, extractions, implants, even cosmetic treatments like whitening and veneers all for less than half the price. Clients do not need to have insurance, but they do need to provide proof of income.

“Patients save 60% of the costs. The community said we don’t want free services, we want affordable services,” Agramont said. “They would live with an impacted tooth for a year. Deciding to start the dental clinic came from horror stories, people coming in with a broken tooth because they tried to extract it themselves. We serve working families who would delay care for themselves, but not for their children.”

One in five children in Utah have untreated dental decay and need immediate dental care, according to the Utah Department of Health.

With a $5,000 grant from the Rocky Mountain Power Foundation, the clinic has been able to expand low-cost preventative dental services to treat more low-income, uninsured Latino children in Salt Lake County.

“This is one of those key initiatives that we really want to support,” said Tiffany Erickson, the media relations manager at Rocky Mountain Power. “What we know is that when kids are hungry, they don’t go to school. When they have medical issues, they don’t go to school. We want to support organizations and initiatives that are helping lower those barriers and make sure that kids have opportunities just like anybody else.”

Often, families have some children who were born in the United States and others who weren’t. The younger siblings can qualify for the Children’s Health Insurance Program or Medicaid, while their older siblings don’t.

“We have families where one of the children qualifies, but others don’t because of where they were born,” Agramont said. “As a parent, they don’t want to favor one child.”

For more than a decade, the clinic has offered dental services mainly to adults. Now they have one pediatric dentist, Dr. David Stewart, but they need more.

The clinic relies on state funding, donations and volunteer providers.

“It doesn’t work if the right pieces don’t fall into place,” Agramont said. “You can have the funds, but not the dentists, or the dentists but not the funds. Like teeth in a smile: if one is missing, it’s not pretty. A local dentist who can donate a few hours a week or month will make a big difference. You can choose the schedule that works best for you.”

Bautista completed her required hours in July and began working at a private clinic in Murray. She has every intention to continue volunteering at Midvale CBC, but can no longer do it full time.

Word of mouth alone keeps the clinic busy. Patients have come from as far away as Tooele and Wendover.

Virtually all of the adults who seek care at the clinic are first-generation immigrants from Latin American countries who work full-time, yet are underinsured or have no insurance at all. They often put off dental treatment as long as possible to avoid missing work or facing costly bills.

Most employees at Midvale CBC are fluent in English and Spanish.

“When I say ‘buenos días’ instead of ‘good morning’ I can see their relief,” said Bautista, who’s native language is Portuguese. “I’m learning both English and Spanish, and the assistants and staff help.”

“All of the dentists make that effort to communicate,” Agramont said. “They learn that basic vocabulary and always have dental assistants that speak Spanish and can step

in. When the dentist makes that effort to communicate, that’s the spirt of this clinic.”

“You are here to help, but you can learn, too,” Bautista added. “It’s a learning environment because you can take your time. You can do a procedure that is a little bit more complicated, but you can have an hour, two hours per procedure. We can do really nice dentistry.”

Tiffany Velasco is the dental manager for the clinic. She has also completed the education necessary to become a dentist, but needs to obtain her license from the state.

“My goal is to do the same process as Dr. Bautista,” said Velasco, who is originally from Peru.

Velasco coordinates the volunteers, schedules patients, buys supplies, helps maintain dental records and steps in as an assistant when necessary.

The volunteer dentists are also supported by a team of volunteer dental hygiene students from Salt Lake Community College. Bautista has been the supervising dentist this past year, working at the clinic from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday.

“Most need a deep cleaning,” Velasco said. “But that’s so expensive. You have to pay out of pocket if you don’t have insurance. It feels great, but $400 is a tough sell for our community. Here you pay $17.”

“It’s a nice place to work,” Bautista said. “We are like a family here. The environment is special. For me it’s so nice, for the people that would never be able to afford a private practice, we change their smiles.” l

Holladay resident and journalist Jane Wynn Allen loves the creative process

J

ane Wynn Allen is not from these parts.

This much is clear. But she has managed to merge the sophistication of the East Coast, where she was raised, with the friendly, open nature of the West, a feat not easily accomplished.

Allen was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and raised in Cleveland, Boston, New York and Washington, D.C. Her father worked for the FBI, and her family moved for his work. Career and education were important in her household, and with her father’s encouragement, Allen attended the University of Montana where she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a minor in radio and television. The university was one of the highest rated colleges for journalism in the country.

Though high achieving, it’s family that matters most to Allen. “I keep immaculate track of my wonderful children and grandchildren,” she said. Allen has two children and 16 grandchildren.

Blending family and career was not always easy, but Allen managed to do so during her 38 years at KSL TV. It was there that she received three Emmys and 11 Telly Awards for her efforts. She received Emmys for a spot she did on the Olympics, a compilation of all her work titled, “An Old Bag of Tricks,” and numerous image spots for the on-air anchors and personalities.

However, accolades and awards are not her main objectives. “I love to write.

I love the creative process,” she said. “I always think that if everything were taken away from me, if I had a yellow legal pad, pen, and an idea, I would be happy.” In addition to her journalistic contributions, Allen enjoys writing poetry as well. An unusual characteristic she possesses is that she misses the on-air editing process when she was a journalist. For many writers, it can be quite painful.

During her career, Allen interviewed some big names including Telly Savalas who spent a Saturday at KSL cutting promos for the old TV series, “Kojak.”

“Raquel Welch gave an impromptu interview in the makeup room, and Bob Costas was very amiable and a perfectionist in delivery and accuracy.” Other interviews included some time with Larry King, Patricia Neal, Maya Angelou, Loretta Swit, David Hasselhoff and many more.

“One of the more enjoyable shoots was with Frank Layden when we did spots spoofing well-known movies, with Frank playing leading role,” Allen said. “It was for Multiple Sclerosis Dinner of Champi-

ons.” During that time, Allen was the MS State chair. “Frank and Barbara Layden were wonderful members of my Board.”

After her retirement in 2005, Allen has kept in touch with old journalistic friends from KSL including Edna Anderson-Taylor, Carole Mikita and Dick Nourse. Though life for her is quieter now, she enjoys her “little house in Holladay in the shadow of the beautiful mountains.”

She also enjoys visiting her brother on the East Coast and gardening.

With a career that spanned from 19672005 and continuing poetic efforts, Allen has truly given herself to the word. l

Local skaters hope the city will add lights soon to the popular skatepark.

Skaters implore council for lights at skate park

C

ouncil meetings can often see residents come voice concerns on any number of topics whether it’s speeding, noise or the future of a property that was once a mall.

Those residents are often adults.

But at the July Holladay City Council meeting, five young teenagers who skate regularly at the recently opened skate park next to city hall, came to request the council consider putting lights at the skatepark so it could stay open later.

The skaters come from Holladay, Millcreek and Cottonwood Heights and were accompanied by Jack Parker, who is part of a nonprofit called Utah Skatepark Advocacy Group which looks to support Utah communities in expanding access to quality and safe skateparks.

After the five teens requested the council approve putting lights at the park, Parker told the council that due to the “awesome growth” of the park, having lights would allow more people “a chance to skate.”

He added they would follow park hours or meet normal noise ordinance hours.

Parker also said they are prepared to get community support with skate shops and

other professionals to help raise funds to do so.

Mayor Rob Dahle explained it wouldn’t be a money discussion but a policy discussion. He made plans to meet with Parker and get the topic on the council agenda in the near future.

Parker said part of his organization’s responsibility is working with kids about how to clean and take care of the skate park. It helps “foster a better relationship between our community and those who helped pay for it,” he said.

Parker pointed out that he recently stepped back for six weeks and in the intervening time, the kids began cleaning the skate park and adjacent city park fields as well as confronting friends to not trash the park.

Bracing for impact: How roller derby builds confidence and community

I

t might look like an aggressive collision, with no rhyme or reason, but Oo Barracuda, Ginny Wheelsley and Sacajawheela know exactly what they’re doing.

Roller derby might be the most misunderstood sport in the country.

It’s part football, part marathon and part wrestling match, but beneath all the noise and excitement is a game with intense strategy and athleticism—and cool derby names.

By day, Jess Hill works at Primary Children’s Hospital, but at night, she rules the derby track as Sacajawheela (Wheela for short).

Hill and her daughter have played since 2013 when they fell in love with the derby community.

As a nurse, Hill deals with trauma-level incidents on a regular basis. The mental and emotional release of roller derby has had a big impact on her life.

“Sometimes it’s all I can do to get myself to practice but then I feel so much better, not just physically but mentally. It kind of clears my space and gets that stress and energy out.”

Hill coached the junior league and watched youth learning valuable skills, and not just about derby.

“We have a lot of juniors coming in with self-esteem issues and getting bullied,” she said. “There are a lot of kids struggling with school.

I have seen kids come out of their shells and do a complete 180 with confidence and having something to be proud of by joining roller derby and having that community.”

Amy Royer (aka Ginny Wheelsley) took up the sport nine years ago, after her first child was born. She was looking for a way to get out of the house and find a fun way to be active.

“Now it’s my social outlet, it’s my physical outlet and it’s like anxiety therapy,” she said. “It really has been an incredible outlet in my life.”

An inclusive sport that welcomes all genders and identities, there are teams for women, men, LGBTQ, coed and juniors. With The Derby Depot in Salt Lake (1415 S. 700 West #17), Utah boasts one of only six permanent roller derby

tracks in the country.

Royer plays with Beehive Skate Revolution, the only recreational derby league in the state.

It’s not the aggressive, competitive game portrayed in movies, but make no mistake, players take the sport seriously.

“People think, myself included, that all these women are going to be tough, mean and competitive and take out their anger on everything, but it’s not like that at all,” Royer said. “I’m not going to lie.

There are some injuries. We’re not going to make you do anything you’re uncomfortable with, but accidents do happen.”

Since COVID, derby numbers have dropped but Hill hopes to get more people involved in the sport.

She said it’s not just about skating, although skating has a physical benefit, but it’s about feeling like you belong in a community that cares about each person.

People often assume a player has to be tough and aggressive to succeed at the sport, but Hill said that’s not true. One of her best

early one million miles away from Earth, the James Webb Space Telescope is gazing into space with the intensity of a teenager watching TikTok. The most powerful observatory ever launched (Hubble orbits a measly 340 miles away from Earth), the JWST navigated to its location and deployed its mirrors, telescopes, solar panels and antennas, unfolding like a Transformer in the middle of space.

NASA (Nerding About Space Again) was unsurprisingly geeked about the first images from the JWST and organized a live event to reveal the pictures to the world. I’m an astronomy fangirl, so it made my nerdy

heart happy to see the images unveiled on July 12 during the NASA production.

I couldn’t help but appreciate that Hollywood hadn’t produced the reveal show. It would have been completely different, with movie stars turning it into a literal song-anddance. It would have included a Gorgeous Galaxy red carpet event before the Beautiful People, dressed in sequins and velvet, highlighted the space pictures “right after these messages.”

Instead of talking to actual astrophysicists, the Beautiful People would have interviewed actors like Matthew McConaughey and Tom Hanks, asking them what it was

like portraying an astronaut in the movies.

There would have been glitzy graphics, a soundtrack by Lizzo and brief glimpses of the space images before the cameras returned to the Beautiful People so they could talk about how much they liked planets.

Thankfully, NASA did the whole program themselves. It was like someone handed the high school astronomy club an iPhone and told them to prepare a science project about the Webb telescope. They didn’t use professional spokespeople. They weren’t dressed in formal wear. It was just astrophysicists literally (yes, literally) bouncing with excitement as the world saw the photos for the first time.

There was even a technical glitch when NASA tried to connect to scientists in Canada but couldn’t get through. NASA can relay images from billions of light years away, but can’t connect with colleagues in Montreal.

and black holes and cosmic cliffs and binary stars, which I don’t think are legal in Utah.

It showed a universe teeming with galaxies never seen before. At least not by people on Earth.

The telescope can see through space dust, asteroid rubble and alien trash to get the clearest pictures ever created. Scientists once thought there was only one galaxy in the universe, but one JWST image showed thousands of galaxies in a teensy bit of sky.

Hopefully, this will prove to politicians that the world does not revolve around them.

Webb’s mission is to search for light from the first stars and galaxies that formed the universe after the Big Bang, unless you don’t believe in the Big Bang. In that case, you can sit next to those who think the moon landing was fake, the earth is flat, evolution is a fraud, the Mars mission is bogus, the moon is an alien spacecraft, that it’s NASA’s job to create space hoaxes and we’ve never crossed the Van Allen Belt.

But if you’re a star-nerd, like me, watching something so vast is mind-boggling.

We’re a tiny, blue marble floating through the enormity of space, doing our best not to fall into a black hole or get vaporized by a meteor.

So many evolutionary steps had to happen for us to even be here. What a rare gift.
