W

ith another championship, the Olympus boys basketball team has earned its place as one of the top programs in the state over the past decade.

On March 5, the Titans claimed their third state championship in the past seven years. This time around, Olympus rallied to defeat upstart Woods Cross 40-31 to claim the crown in a low-scoring contest.

The Titans found themselves in unfamiliar territory early on.

Down 21-16 at halftime, the Titans were not accustomed to being in a close game, especially behind. After all, Olympus entered the game with a 25-1 record (12-0 in Region 6) and had outscored its foes by more than 25 points per game. But head coach Matt Barnes and his players weren’t panicking.

“We trusted ourselves; we had confidence in ourselves,” Barnes said. “[Woods Cross] slowed it down and spread the floor. It was a battle and a war.”

In the third quarter, Olympus scored the first four points to narrow the gap to 21-20. But then Woods Cross scored six points in a row to go back up by seven. From there, it was all Olympus and its tough defense.

The Titans outscored Woods Cross 13-4 in the fourth quarter.

“We did a tremendous job closing the third quarter and got the lead in the fourth,” Barnes said. “It’s fun to win it at the end and celebrate.”

Holladay magician reunites with teacher who inspired him long ago

M

ost people have a story about how the March 2020 lockdown affected them. Paul Draper of Holladay, an alumnus of Holladay schools, was in Disneyland performing as a magician.

“The Disney people came to me and said, ‘We’re going to close down, so you need to head out.’ I said, ‘Ok, I’ll just come back tomorrow and get my things.’ They said, ‘No, take your things now—we’re not sure when we’ll reopen,’” Draper said.

The park stayed closed for 412 days, the longest closure in its history.

Disney had thousands of people in their hotels with nothing to do. So they called Draper and asked him to do a show at the locked front gates. “That day the magic was outside of the park,” Draper said.

Draper loved magic from the time he was 7 years old.

He remembers seeing a live magic show for the first time at the 49th Street Galleria.

“I think almost every magician on earth becomes a magician when they’re in second grade. I started talking about magic to my teacher, Lorene Billings. She was so supportive,” Draper said.

Billings, who taught at Holladay Elementary School, which is now the Holladay City Hall, encouraged Draper.

“She said, ‘If you like doing magic tricks, why don’t you do a show for the class?’” Draper recalled.

That was the beginning of 10 years of magic shows in Mrs. Billings’s class. Every year she’d invite him back to her class to perform, and every year he’d get better. His final show was in 1997 when he graduated from Olympus High.

Draper’s ambitions were to be a theater performer or professor. “I have a degree in musical theater. But eventually I started doing magic shows full time and teaching social science classes as an adjunct professor,” Draper said.

He’s worked in Anaheim, Las Vegas and appeared on numerous television spots. He’s a member of an elite magicians’ club in London.

Draper kept his close ties to Holladay. “I performed for the opening of the Holladay Library and the new theater building at Olympus High. Life came full circle—I learned magic from books in the Holladay Library!”

on over 600 free shows for Title I schools, homeless shelters and children’s hospitals,” Draper said.

Draper has overcome the skepticism of an online magic show by using “1950’s television technology.”

“I use one [camera] shot, it never cuts away and nothing ever leaves the screen. It feels very much like everyone has a front row seat,” Draper said.

Draper’s shows are family friendly, entertaining and educational. His website www.PaulDraper.com lists his impressive resume.

Draper performed for the Holladay City Arts Council on Jan. 21. About 180 people attended virtually. At the end of the show, he asked for questions or comments. One person wanted to add her thoughts.

“I commented about how much he had improved since second grade!” said Lorene Billings. The former teacher heard about the show through Draper’s email list and watched her former student perform.

Draper loved that Billings had watched the show, and explained to everyone what their connection was.

“I had a little moment with her and told everyone what an inspiration she was to me. She was the one person in the world who said, ‘Yes, magic is OK,’” Draper said.

“We’ve talked a few times over the years. It’s a wonderful friendship, and he’s always so congenial and nice. He’s always willing to give and share. My students loved that he would come back and do the show every year—they would just eat it up,” Billings said.

Billings remembers Draper as a bright student. “If he had an interest, he stayed with it. He was focused. And he made the kids so happy—he made us all happy. I feel delighted that I’m in touch with him and could watch the show,” Billings said.

Billings’s opinion of Draper has only grown since second grade. “I’m just amazed by the whole thing,” Billings said. “He was a wonderful person then and now. He was a wonderful student, and it’s just terrific to see one of your students accomplish what he has accomplished.” l

Three Holladay schools team up to keep fine arts program running

or 20 years, Holladay mom Jennifer Julian has been passionate about helping students learn about artists. After two years of pandemic setbacks and budget constraints, Julian is desperate to get funding so Spring Lane, Oakwood and Woodstock elementary schools can keep the Meet the Masters art program running.

“This is the only fine arts program elementary students get. It’s a nationally-recognized curriculum that’s been around since 1985. We’ve been relying on parent volunteers to come in and teach as the artist, but we need to hire someone,” Julian said.

The program starts with an assembly, then students have classes and six projects focused on history, technique and wellknown artists and works.

“We show them several pieces. We cover materials, whether that’s quilting, paint or oils. We talk about how they used light and shadow,” Julian said.

Spring Lane’s parent volunteers have been great, but like most parents they are stretched thin.

“We have to train them on the curriculum, and almost every year there is turnover, or some classes just get missed. The kids deserve to have a dedicated art teacher, but that costs money,” Julian said.

Julian speaks from experience. Her five children range in age from 20 down to eight years old. Her older children have gone through the program; the youngest one is learning it at home with Julian.

“I was never great at the art projects, but I feel that Meet the Masters gave me knowledge that served me well later in life,” said Julian’s daughter Nikelle Julian, who is currently a student at BYU. “In both history and humanities classes there will be times when we are talking about these art masters, and I already have background knowledge about these figures because of the program I had in elementary school,” Nikelle said.

Julian’s daughter Brynnly is a student at Cottonwood High. She didn’t realize what a great education she was getting in elementary school until she took high school art classes.

“I learned so much about famous artists and their methods in elementary school. There were great art projects and I really got into them as a beginning artist.

Now in my art classes in high school, I see that Meet the Masters gave me a fantastic start,” Brynnly said.

Julian is researching several avenues to secure funding. She’s teamed up with parents at Oakwood and Woodstock elementary schools in the hopes that they can get a grant and hire a teacher who will travel among the three schools.

of paying for this. Some parents fundraise or pay for the teacher. I’ve also met with Sheryl Gillian and Paul Fotheringham at Holladay City to see if the arts council can help,” Julian said.

Constraints put on schools by the pandemic also shone a light on the needs of the Meet the Masters program.

“During strict Covid precautions, we couldn’t have any parent volunteers in schools. We had to get creative, and only the PTA president could go in the classrooms. We found out the kids really loved the program. They missed it and needed it,” Julian said.

Julian thinks there is a misconception about how much money is in Holladay schools to pay for programs like Meet the Masters.

“The three schools we’re bringing together for this fundraiser each have a unique student body. They don’t just serve their neighborhood.

“Woodstock has a Gifted and Talented program. Oakwood has a strong parent volunteer foundation. We at Spring Lane have the Chinese Dual Immersion program.

Families are coming into our schools from all over the valley,” Julian said.

The result is a mixed school population.

“I know parents at our school who work two or three jobs, and they’re stretched thin. We have a lot of parents who are involved and very committed to their kids’ education. We also have a lot of students who are underserved. They all deserve this program,” Julian said.

The funds they’re looking for won’t cover art supplies or preparation time.

That will be covered by donations and volunteers.

“The only thing the teacher will do is make a schedule and make sure they go to all the classes and teach the curriculum,” Julian said.

Julian is committed to making sure those classes happen for every student.

“I’m not the biggest artist, but I’m a believer in this program. I will fight to the end to see that this program stays alive,” Julian said. “It’s the only fine arts program these kids get, and they love it.” l

“We showed poise, composure and toughness,” Barnes said. “It’s a credit to the boys.”

Barnes also said that the state tournament offers some unique challenges that the players don’t face during the regular season.

“At state, the players know it’s one and

done, do or die,” he said. “But we have the same mentality at state as we did all season.

We continue to do what we’ve been doing.”

Olympus defeated Salem Hills 63-45 in the quarterfinals on Feb. 28 and routed Bonneville 60-43 in the semifinals on March 2. During the region portion of the season, Olympus routinely won by 30 or 40 points.

“There was a lot of pressure; the target on our back was big,” Barnes said. “We took every game in stride. We were never too high or too low; we just kept moving

forward.”

The last time Olympus won the state title was in 2017–18 when the team went a perfect 27-0. Those Titans won the championship game by 27 points and only had two games in which it won by fewer than 10 points. Olympus also won the state championship in 2015–16, which was its first ever.

Barnes compared this latest Titans squad to the undefeated team four years ago.

“Every team has its own identity,” he said. “Both teams had good confidence.

Both had similar margins of victory in its games. It’s all about the culture we have and how we do things.”

Some challenges await the Titans next season. Olympus loses some senior leaders but does return a pair of talented sophomores in DowDell and Jordan Barnes.

Coach Barnes also noted that the JV team only lost one game. Some of those players will be key members of the varsity squad in 2022–23. l

olladay grew almost 21% between 2010 and 2020 according to census numbers.

That census every 10 years, and resulting population change, forces all levels of government to reassess its boundary lines. For Holladay, it means realigning its districts so each district has a similar population size rather than geographic.

Holladay is separated into five districts, represented by a single councilmember that makes up the five-person Holladay City Council (the mayor is voted at-large by the entire city).

In May the council will vote to approve one of two proposed maps. The primary difference between the two comes down to two areas.

First, the southwest portion of District 2 (between Highland Drive and Holladay Boulevard) will move into District 1, the central portion of the city. One option has everything west and south of Holladay Boulevard, while the other cuts west at Lincoln Lane to Highland Drive.

Second, in the middle of the city one area (north of Cottonwood Creek and west of Cottonwood Lane) will either stay where it is or move into District 1.

Both options have everything south of Valley View and Branch, west of I-215, east of Wander Lane and north of Casto Lane moving

into District 5.

The 2020 census saw District 1 with the lowest population at 6,068 and District 2 with the highest at 7,141 and a 15% increase from 2010. That’s why, in order to bring the population sizes closer in line with one another, District 2 will cede population to District 1.

The council’s preference is to go with option 5a that sees a portion of District 5 move into District 1 and District 2 cedes the area south of Lincoln Lane into District 1.

The change still keeps District 1, represented by Councilman Ty Brewer, as the smallest.

“By the time we take the 2030 census, Ty (District 1) will grow by another 3-4,000 residents with Holladay Hills,” Mayor Rob Dahle said. “So I think that’s the best option.”

The changes also accomplish city staff’s goals in keeping districts to within 4% of each other and maintaining clean lines. The proposed change in the middle of the city would cede area from District 5, represented by Councilman Dan Gibbons, into District 1, creating a new boundary along Cottonwood Creek.

“That really cleans up a puzzling boundary we have,” Gibbons said during the March council meeting commending the change. l

Class size is limited to 12 preschoolers, who must be potty-trained and three, four and five years old. About 25 high school students, who have taken Child Development and Early Childhood Education classes, work with the young students with preschool aide Earlene Rex. Monthly tuition for Kolt Kids Preschool is $120 for four mornings per week. The preschool year is typically October through April. Once they arrive, the preschoolers will hang up their coats and bags and wash hands.

A high school student also will ask a question to every preschooler that will be included in the lessons of the day.

“The question will reinforce whatever we’re talking about and gives us a counting aspect,” Rex said. “So yesterday, we asked, ‘Have you ever seen a giraffe?’ for the letter G. Then we count how many have and decide if it’s larger or smaller than those who haven’t.”

Herbon said that the class “is constantly doing math.”

“Math is so critical in child development,” she said.

“They have to understand the concept of counting, which is bigger or more and which is smaller or less. They are learning patterns, which is a very basic skill in kindergarten. We are constantly doing a lot, like maybe 15 math standards, that follow the preschool state curriculum.”

cally include art, science or sensory, literacy and math. There also is music and movement intermixed into the preschoolers’ days.

During their morning circle time on a brightly colored rug, a preschooler may see the day of the month, for example the third, and learn about the number three. Then the preschooler can spin a wheel to see if the class will jump or stomp their feet three times. They also will look at the weather and say and practice writing the letter of the day.

The day will follow a theme, perhaps a nursery rhyme or a letter. Recently, the preschoolers learned all about the letter F and reached into a “mystery box” to pull out items that started with the letter, such as felt, a flower, a plastic fire engine and a flag, said junior Myalisa Romero.

When they learned about the letter G, they also learned goat starts with the letter and had a visit from a real goat and learned about feeding and taking care of it.

A story and an art project usually accompany the lesson.

Students also explore science, from examining how magnets work while reinforcing the letter M to studying the letter V while learning how a papier-mâché volcano erupts with vinegar and baking soda.

“I love how creative they are and how their perspectives are,” Torres said.

Senior Rebecca Walker loves thinking outside the box when teaching the preschoolers.

“I love working with the kids and learning new ways to teach them,” she said. “We work with each one of the preschool students to learn skills as they all learn differently.”

Each day, preschool students have a healthy snack and play on the playground in the courtyard with high school students. Back inside the preschool, there are several stations for the preschoolers, such as an imagination station or one filled with blocks and manipulatives. There are trucks, puz-

zles, books, sticker letters and other learning materials.

“There’s always somebody there to play with them and they clean up as we sing the clean-up song,” Rex said. “At the end of the day, high school students sanitize everything.”

Holidays, birthdays and a few other days bring fun opportunities to the preschoolers. For their birthdays, preschoolers wear a birthday crown and choose a book to keep.

A special day may include the chance to listen to Cottonwood High music students introduce their instruments and listen to them play or attend part of the high school musical.

For holidays, such as Halloween, the preschoolers who are dressed up in their costumes may trick-or-treat through the school’s offices and then try a witch’s brew. They also may drive golf tees into a pumpkin. For St. Patrick’s Day, preschoolers can bring a leprechaun trap to share with the class, but while they’re out of the room, the leprechauns leave footprints and create havoc in the preschool right down to turning the water green in a child-size toilet.

Typically, during the school year, guest speakers such as a firefighter or crossing guard or other community helpers share with students the importance of their jobs.

Parents are welcome to observe the lessons through one-way mirrors. Rex also takes photos and videos to share with parents and a preschool yearbook is given to students.

At the end of the year, high school students plan a preschool graduation ceremony where the youngsters wear their own cardboard mortarboards.

Herbon said high school students are learning many skills in addition to curriculum.

“These kids have learned some incredible positive guidance techniques and they can use them in any situation. They can redirect kids if their having a hard time or to correct behavior and just use a lot of positivity and praise,” she said.

Arianna Mevs conjures creativity and teaches her students to do the same

ew artists embrace the dual nature of themselves like Arianna Mevs, the Holladay Artist of the Month. Trained first in ballet, Mevs transitioned and welcomed the more free-flowing and expressive aspects of modern dance. Today, she teaches her students the discipline and joy of both.

Born in Holladay, Mevs and her family later moved to Utah County where she trained in classical ballet at Jacqueline’s School of Ballet and Wasatch Ballet. She became adept at her craft and later received a scholarship to Brigham Young University—Idaho. There, she performed principal roles and became a member of the university’s traveling tour team, Dance Alliance.

Holladay, however, beckoned a return. “As a child, I remember telling my mother when we moved to Utah County, ‘Mom, I’m going to miss my trees!’” After attending college, Mevs and her husband moved to Holladay. “In fact, we moved back into the same townhome that my parents were in when they were first married,” Mevs said.

She began teaching dance in a col-

league’s basement, and her career grew from there. In 2015, she opened The Dance Box where she teaches children. Her Summer Fairy Camp for ages 2-6 has become popular.

“We do magical things like the fairies come and then leave us a scavenger hunt, and we have an extensive collection of fairy houses,” Mevs said. “Throughout the flower beds, we’ll put the fairy houses there so that students can go and see the fairies have visited them.”

Mevs believes strongly in children’s ability to co-create. “We pull up a pinecone out of the (scavenger) basket and talk about, ‘This pinecone is sharp,’ and we relate that to movement. ‘How can we create a shape with our body that’s sharp?’”

Mevs’ enthusiasm is apparent. “Even the youngest child has some pretty profound ways that they can contribute,” she said. “I love to provide them the opportunity to engage in the creative process with me rather than coming prepared with exact choreography or steps that I want them to do or having them mimic me perfectly.”

Mevs believes she benefited im-

mensely both from ballet and creative dance, and she tries to offer her students the benefits of both disciplines. In ballet, Mevs believes she learned both grace and strength. “It gave me the opportunity to always have goals in mind, to really have a sense of betterment,” she said.

Creative dance, however, brought out something new in her spirit. It was more of a grounding, internal kind of discipline,” she said. “Modern (dance) gave me the opportunity to really breathe into who I was and what I had to say.”

Mevs practices other forms of expression including photography and formerly writing and copy editing. “I have those tools, and I know how to connect my body and my spirit through the arts,” she said.

The good news for residents is that Mevs and her husband are planning on staying in Holladay. “I think every day that I drive through town to go teach our community’s children, I truly feel the blessing of that and the responsibility of that,” she said.

ting quietly and correctly on their pockets and say, ‘Thank you for sitting’ or ‘Thank you for quietly listening,’” she said. “Other kids pick up on that and learn from one another.”

High school students are translating what they’ve learned from interacting with preschoolers to their own peers, such as having more patience, figuring out different approaches to conflicts, working as a team on projects and being positive role models.

They also learned how to problem-solve as in the case when one preschooler didn’t come with a costume, the high school students quickly created one that brought a smile to the little student’s face.

Junior Gabby Stephens said she’d use some of the teaching skills she has learned at home.

“I’m learning how to be a better sister and how to be a better parent for the future and how to use positive reinforcement,” she said.

Sophomore Janel Amaya said she has learned to be more patient, which helps with anxiety.

“I’m talking to them and seeing how they do stuff—and it’s just so calming,” Amaya said.

Some high school students have plans to become teachers so they enroll for multiple years. Sophomore Aisha Sylvester hopes to return as a senior when her niece and nephew may enroll in Kolt Kids so she can return to be their teacher.

For Rex, being a teacher is not a job, but a passion.

“I love seeing them grow and develop—both the preschool students and the high school students,” she said. l

Ranked Choice Voting in retrospect and the future of voting in Utah

wenty-three Utah cities participated in Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) for the first time in the November 2021 election. RCV is a pilot project approved by the state legislature from a bill sponsored by Representative Jeff Stenquist (R-Draper). The bill stated it was up to each city council, not the mayor, whether or not their city would participate.

Prior to the election, both the city recorder and county clerk’s office made efforts to educate voters about RCV and each ballot came with a letter from the county clerk’s office introducing RCV. Following the election, Draper City conducted a survey to gauge residents’ responses to RCV with 791 people responding. The majority (67.9%) of respondents said they were expecting the new system while 32.1% said it came as a surprise.

Statistics from the survey: 33.4% were very satisfied with RCV (30.2% were very unsatisfied) 50.7% felt the instructions on the ballot were very clear (9.5% felt they were very unclear) 46.4% said the RCV process was very easy (9.6% found it difficult) 63.2% were confident they completed their ballot correctly (8.5% were not at all confident) “At this time, the city council has not made a decision about using RCV again. The next election is in November 2023, so we expect it will not be addressed until early 2023,” said Draper City’s Communications Director Linda Peterson, following the survey.

Meanwhile, a panel discussed the future of voting in Utah at a February forum at the University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics. Panelists included Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen, Weber County Clerk Ricky Hatch, Ammon Gruwell from Utah Approves, and Stan Lockhart, a proponent of RCV and former chairman of the Utah Republican Party.

“There is no perfect method of elections. The (current/ traditional) system of plurality voting is fraught with challenges,” Lockhart said.

According to Lockhart, plurality voting causes people to either be really happy or really unhappy because their choice for office either wins or loses. He said that there are “games played” with plurality voting, including splitting the vote (such as when an Independent, Libertarian or Green Party member joins a race) and that strategic voting is necessary.

Lockhart feels RCV promotes more voter satisfaction (a voter’s first choice may not win, but their second choice might) and encourages civility in campaigning (if a candidate is not a voter’s first choice, that candidate hopes to be their second or third choice). Lockhart cited New York City as having used RCV for their last mayoral election, resulting in a win for Eric Adams.

Gruwell indicated the nation’s current system has low voter satisfaction and that all voting methods perform identically when there are only two candidates. His nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, Utah Approves ( www.utahapproves.org ) advocates for approval voting.

“Approval voting…results in a big improvement in outcomes in crowded races. Voters simply get to vote for more than one and the candidate with the most votes wins.

It’s an election based on highest favorability rating…there is no ranking or elimination of candidates like with RCV,” Gruwell said. The system has been used throughout Europe, in Papal Conclaves, and in U.S. cities including Far-

go, North Dakota and St. Louis, Missouri.

“All 29 county clerks in Utah have come out in support of approval voting…not only due to the simplicity and cost-effective nature…but also because it has an audit trail they are comfortable with,” the Utah Approves website states.

According to Gruwell, the level of ballot spoilage with approval voting is low (compared to moderate for RCV) and approval voting requires moderate voter education (the traditional system requires low-level voter education and RCV requires more).

Hatch and Swensen, two of four county clerks in Utah who administered RCV for the first-time last November, shared their thoughts.

“Voter confidence across the country is low, but we do it well in Utah,” Hatch said. He cited an MIT study that found voter confidence has a 20% swing based on if the voter’s candidate won or lost. As an election administrator, Hatch said his priorities are threefold; following the law, accuracy in tabulating results, and removing voting barriers including complexity. He’s not convinced about RCV and questions if now is the right time to make changes. “It’s great in concept, but let’s take a holistic approach,” he said.

Swensen said, “It was challenging for us to administer RCV, from creating the ballot to the instructions.” She later said, “It took our staff two weeks to format the 79 different ballot faces or styles for all the municipalities. The various ballot styles had to be designed to apply to voters depending on where within the county they resided so they could vote on candidates that pertained to their voting precinct. We found examples of ballot instructions from other jurisdictions that conducted RCV elections. We took the best examples of those…It was a very complex process to position the RCV contests and the standard voting contests on the ballots so they would not be confusing to voters.”

Swensen said approval voting wouldn’t take as much space on a ballot as RCV. She has concerns that RCV ballots could be multiple pages, resulting in higher costs to print and mail, and more chance for potential spoilage, such

as if a voter failed to return all pages of the ballot for tabulation. She estimated one extra page on a ballot could cost $200,000.

Swensen said she wished the county had more time to prepare for the first RCV and she had a realization after it was conducted. “We definitely undercharged the municipalities,” she said. “The estimate for conducting an RCV election should have been at least double what we cited… partly because of the complexity of the ballot formatting…

There were also a lot of ambiguities in the RCV statute which required a lot of administrative time and legal consultation.”

Lockhart commended the county clerks for successfully administering the first large-scale RCV elections. “Until you use alternative methods of voting you’re skeptical,” he said.

The RCV pilot project is good until Jan. 1, 2026. A RCV “clean up” bill, sponsored by Rep. Doug Welton (R-Payson), was in house committee waiting to be heard at press time. l

Ukraine rally gives residents real-time opportunities to send aid

Representatives from the Utah Ukrainian Association handed out blue and yellow ribbons with which to decorate homes as a show of support to the Ukrainian people. Residents had the opportunity to learn about and sign a petition seeking permission for Ukranians to join their families stateside.

“We are very grateful to the IRC for all they are doing,” said Catherine Stokes, a volunteer with the UUA who is helping with the upcoming UUA Hope and Healing Day for Ukrainians living in Utah.

A retired schoolteacher lives a quiet life in Texas, and is set in her ways. A smooth-talking handyman passes through town, intent on renovating her house, and perhaps... her life.

n Saturday, March 26, the cities of Holladay and Millcreek, in partnership with the International Rescue Committee, hosted a community rally to support civilians in war-torn Ukraine.

With the familiar, folksy sounds of local band Winterwood emanating from the gazebo in Holladay City Park, surrounded by yellow and blue flags rustling in the breeze, local residents joined the mayors of Holladay and Millcreek as well as representatives from several nonprofit organizations, learning about ways to send aid to Ukraine.

The International Rescue Committee, Utah Ukrainian Association and Balance Insider were on hand to answer questions about donations and how aid is getting to Ukraine and the surrounding countries who are supporting civilians fleeing conflict.

Local residents were able to make donations and meet members of the organizations, many of whom had first-hand stories about families struggling to survive.

Holladay Mayor Rob Dahle and Millcreek Mayor Jeff Silvestrini circulated, speaking to residents about ongoing efforts to help in Ukraine and what can be done from their own cities. “It’s crushing to me we are having this conflict in 2022, '' Silvestrini said. “We aren’t going to lose focus on this.”

Katy Brooksby, from Holladay, was moved by the joint-city effort to aid Ukraine, saying “it’s overwhelming that we can participate, it’s so touching.” Brooksby was moved to tears hearing stories from Ukraine emigrants, and was grateful to have the opportunity to make a donation that goes directly to support Ukraine.

“You can do things that matter,” said Dahle, hoping that residents will feel relief when they learn about the different organizations and ways to support the people of Ukraine. “There is a tremendous amount of aid needed,” he said, adding that the power of community coming together will make a difference.

The two cities partnered with the International Rescue Committee, a nonprofit that focuses on helping people affected by humanitarian crises. IRC was accepting donations that will go directly to efforts to aid civilians in Ukraine with food, medical care and emergency support.

The IRC is currently working in Poland aiding displaced Ukrainian families.

Galyna Flohr, from Mykolaiv, Ukraine, moved to Sandy twelve years ago. She is raising money for Balance Insider, a group that delivers free groceries to families and the elderly who don’t have access to food in Kiev, Ukraine.

“Right now, it is most important that everybody talk about Ukraine,” said Flohr.

Her father is in Ukraine, and it is difficult for Flohr, speaking to him only sporadically,

Defending region champion Titans looking for repeat on baseball field

A

fter a successful regular season in 2021, things didn’t end the way the Olympus baseball team wanted. A bid at redemption is underway.

The Titans won Region 6 last season with a 13-1 record, one game ahead of perennial state power Cottonwood. Olympus went an impressive 25-4 overall; however, the Titans were eliminated before the final rounds in the double-elimination Class 5A state tournament.

Repeating as Region 6 champs won’t likely be easy this time around.

Region 6 has some skilled competition this season. Plus, the Titans have a target on their backs, having gone nearly perfect in league play last season. Head coach Cortland Felts has plenty of talent on his squad, including returning pitchers Ashton Johnson (a senior) and Jacob Faust (a junior). Senior catcher Corbin Sanchez and senior centerfielder Mic Paul will also be key players for the Titans.

Fellow seniors JD Olson, Sam Creer, Jackson Park and Matthew Thomas will have bigger roles on this year’s squad.

The Titans already dropped a pair of games in the early going. The team started off 3-2, with both losses coming by two runs. One of those was a 3-1 setback at Dixie on March 19. The other loss was a high-scoring 9-7 defeat at the hands of Clearfield on March 18. In

that game, Johnson had four RBI in a losing cause, with Sanchez contributed a triple and two RBI. The Titans also had a close win over Farmington (7-6 on March 18), but there were a pair of blowout victories as well.

Olympus opened the year with a 10-0 shutout win over Cyprus on March 14. Sanchez had an RBI and a triple, while Paul added a double and an RBI. Johnson had two RBI as the Titans racked up nine hits. The defense was strong in the season-opening win. With Johnson leading the way on the mound, Olympus gave up just a single hit.

On March 19, in a tournament in St. George, Olympus routed Juan Diego 15-1.

The team amassed 11 hits and scored eight runs alone in the third inning. The game only went five innings before the Titans had done enough damage to earn the win. Olson was the winning pitcher and gave up just one hit.

Faust was an offensive star, accumulating two triples, a double and three RBI. Sanchez had a double and four RBI. Jackson Godfrey also had a triple and two RBI. Olympus should get stiff competition in region play from Skyline and Murray. The Titans will play each region opponent three times, beginning with a series against Brighton March 29 where Olympus opened with a

10-0 victory. The final league contest will be May 12 at home in the final of three games against rival Skyline.

A Little Trash Talk

By Dan Gibbons, District 5 As a small boy, the highlight of my week was waiting for the big garbage truck to pick up the trash on our street every Tuesday morning, and I remember thinking, “That’s what I want to do when I grow up!” Fast forward several decades, and my wish has partially come true! I represent Holladay on the board of the Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling District, where I’m the vice chairman this year. The District is a non-profit government agency, operated by elected representatives from Holladay and eleven other municipalities or townships in Salt Lake County.

You’ve seen the different colored cans and containers that the District provides—black, blue, green, gray, white (and in the future, possibly purple). Let me describe each can and the program they represent, and share several ways the District can serve the needs of Holladay residents: 1. The Black Can and the Blue Can: Basic service from the district includes both a black and blue can. The black garbage cans are for ordinary waste, while the blue recycling cans should only be used for recyclable waste, including clean paper and cardboard.

Please do not put plastic bags or any food items in the blue cans, as that contaminates the recyclable material. Holladay residents can help keep fees low by recycling as much as possible. Over 60 percent of the materials at the landfill can be recycled. Fees for basic recycling are $17 per month or $204 per year, billed monthly.

2. The Green Can: The District operates a curbside green waste collection program each year. Each Holladay residence has the opportunity to obtain a green waste can. Green waste collection operates as a subscription program with collections provided weekly between mid-March and mid-December. There is a onetime startup fee of $60, and thereafter a $126 per year charge.

Once the green waste is collected from your home, it is shredded, screened, and recycled as compost.

3. The Gray Can: The District offers two forms of glass recycling— curbside collection (in a smaller gray can) and drop-off collection.

A one-time $45 startup fee applies to curbside glass collection, and thereafter a $24 quarterly fee.

4. The Purple Can (possibly in the future): This month the District is using grant money to conduct a pilot program for the collection of food waste in selected areas of Salt Lake County. The waste will be recycled for processing in an anerobic digestor that produces bio-gas for power and bio-fertilizer. If the pilot is successful, you may see a purple can coming to a Holladay street near you.

5. The Big White Containers: Due to COVID and continued staffing issues at the District, the board has decided to continue a hybrid seasonal container reservation program in 2022, as we offered in 2021. Residents will have the opportunity to reserve a container on a first come-first service basis to be delivered to their home.

The University of Utah Health Salt Lake City Marathon is April 23, 2022! It will feature a full marathon, half marathon, 5K, 10K run, 26-mile bike tour, 10K in-line skate, and a 1K kids’ marathon.

The race will come through the City of Holladay starting at 3900 S. and 2300 E. The route will follow 2300 E. southbound to 4600 S. then back northbound on Holladay Blvd to 4500 S. and then west through Highland Drive. At all major intersections there will be an “Intersection Traffic Officer” to facilitate cross-traffic flow whenever there are breaks in runners and safe to do so. The runners should be through Holladay by about 11:30 am.

Warm weather is quickly approaching, as are gatherings with people and pets at parks, homes, and other locations. Salt Lake County Animal Services has some suggestions on How to Greet a Dog safely, whether it’s a dog you’re familiar with or one you’re meeting for the first time. Help your dog from being put in an uncomfortable situation with strangers, or even friends and family.

When you’re approaching a dog that you would like to pet but don’t know: Step 1: Make sure the dog has a leash, a collar, and an owner. If it doesn’t, call Animal Control.

Step 2: Look at the dog’s body language. Look to see if it is a happy/relaxed dog. There are many online resources that demonstrate dog body language.

Step 3: Ask permission from the Owner: “May I please pet your dog?” It is okay if the owner says “no!”

Step 4: If you have permission, do a quick body language check again.

Common mistakes: • Putting your hand up to a dog’s nose. Dog’s do not need to smell your hand.

• Leaning over the dog or put your face into the dog’s face Step 5: Angle body slightly away from dog.

Step 6: Keep hands to yourself until the dog approaches you, seeking out interaction.

Step 7: Pet the dog calmly and quietly, avoiding sensitive areas.

Step 8: Remain standing if it is a large or medium sized dog. If it is a small dog, you can crouch down, making sure you are still not leaning over the dog.

City Council Re-Districting Every 10 years, the Decennial US Census takes place – an effort to count every resident in the United States. Since the 2010 count, a lot has changed in Holladay. While the population of the City has grown by 21% in the last ten years, most of that growth is the result of the 2014 annexation of the Olympus Hills neighborhood, an area roughly defined from 3900 South to 4500 South and 2700 East to I-215. Based on that annexation coupled with demographic changes and some redevelopment, Holladay is now home to 31,965 residents.

Most of that growth occurred in Districts One and Four.

After each U.S. Census, state governments, municipalities, and other public entities are required by law to adjust the district boundaries for their elected offices to ensure that each district has roughly the same amount of people in it.

State law requires that the City Council adopt new district boundaries within six months after the legislature completes its redistricting process.

Highland Dr Study The City of Holladay initiated a corridor study on Highland Drive between Arbor Lane and Van Winkle Expressway in 2021 to plan for improvements to be made in the next 10-20 years. After considering conceptual engineering data, future traffic numbers and public feedback, the Holladay City Council decided to move forward with Alternative 1: Complete Street (see graphic below article for details).

This alternative was selected after conducting preliminary traffic modeling to better understand how vehicles would flow through the Highland Drive corridor in the study area with a Complete Street design.

The traffic modeling was based on existing traffic data from the regional model, supplemented with current traffic counts (conducted by video and by hand) and model-projected traffic volume assumptions 30 years into the future. The travel demand model indicates a 10% increase in traffic on Highland Drive by the year 2050. The study team increased that volume assumption to 25% in order to capture any future unknowns that may increase trips on the corridor. Even with this 25% increase, the road would still operate at an acceptable level of service, with only a few seconds of added delay at intersections, scoring a better grade than many urbanized roads in Salt Lake County.

The traffic model did indicate that the Complete Street Alternative would likely increase delay at some intersections by several seconds. However, the majority of intersections would maintain the same level of delay with the new design as they currently do now.

The City Council reviewed the traffic model results and determined that the benefits of creating a safe, walkable, bikeable and landscaped corridor outweighed the tradeoff of adding some delay at a few intersections.

Students create four-hour masterpieces at Art Olympics

ranite School District’s annual Art Olympics was March 16 at Olympus High. Students from eight GSD high schools had four hours to create a work of art.

Winners were awarded by category at the end of the evening.

“It’s like a track meet for art—these are marathon skills. I think they learn persistence,” said Taylorsville art teacher Nicole Lavely. She and fellow Taylorsville art teacher Kelly Mouton were there to cheer on 11 students competing from their school.

“Each school has a certain number of kids we can invite to participate. They choose what they want to make and practice ahead of time. They bring all the supplies they’ll need. The kids surprise themselves at what they can create,” Lavely said.

Students sat at tables in Olympus’ commons area, grouped by the type of art they had chosen to create: sculpture, drawing or painting. Junior Diana Vo of Taylorsville worked on her drawing at the Concept Art table.

“I came up with this idea around Valentine’s Day,” she said of her work in progress, the animated face of a young woman, with swirling pink and purple curls. The colors were warm and inviting, but the subject had tears in her eyes.

“It’s about the chaotic feeling around love. There’s the excitement of falling in love, those are the colors. There are the bubbles. But the bubbles burst—you can get

your heart broken,” Vo said.

Teacher Trevor Wright of Cyprus High brought 11 students to compete. “Just being in a room with other artists and seeing them create helps these students. There’s a lot of creative energy here. If you are here, you are the best from your school,” Wright said.

Wright said the event is a confidence builder. “Being able to make something in four hours? That’s hard.”

In addition to the work they created, all students could bring three to five pieces to display in a small gallery set up by the hosting school.

Olympus student Liam Kimball set up his work just outside the commons area—a side-by-side panel of spray-painted skulls on a black background. “The skulls are mirror images of each other, but one is green and one is red. It’s my take on good and evil,” Kimball said.

Kimball’s work was freehand, including some intricate silver latticework up on the skulls. Near the bottom, he chose to let the paint run down from the teeth he outlined in black spray paint.

The event was run by GSD’s Noemi Hernández-Balcázar, a multi-awardwinning leader in the education arts community.

Hernández-Balcázar is the district’s arts coordinator. She also set up a table with supplies for students to make art for children in Ukraine.

the evening. Each high school was recognized at least once with a win. But Lavely and the other teachers insist that this night isn’t about the awards.

“I talk to students years later and they say this was their favorite event. It ignites

a fire in them. Artists are funny—we feel like we should be creative by ourselves. But when we get in a group, there is an energy that happens,” Lavely said. “The students surprise themselves.” l

Olympus Aquatics feeds success of local high schools

A

fter Olympus and Skyline took first and second respectively in the 5A UHSAA state championships, it’s apparent that both programs are aided by the success of Olympus Aquatics. It is a feeder program that prepares swimmers to excel not only in high school, but USA swimming competitions and possibly more.

“I’ve been coaching at Olympus since 2013,” Olympus coach Tom Thorum said. “I’ve also coached the Olympus Aquatics program since 2013. I got my degree in architecture. My dad was a coach at East High. He was a really good coach.”

While Skyline and Olympus have a longstanding rivalry in all athletic competitions, Thorum doesn’t let that distract from his main goal.

“I just look at the group of kids that we have each year and try to serve everyone the best I can,” Thorum said. “I don’t get caught up too much in the rivalry.”

While this isn’t the first time that the Titans have tasted success in the state championships, it was still a memorable year in many aspects.

“One thing that really stands out is the Olympus girls were the underdogs going into it,” Thorum said. “The Skyline girls beat us at region and the dual meet. Our girls ended up winning all the relays which was quite a feat.

That’s something I’ll always remember. Our boys swam an All-Classification record in every relay. We had several All-Americans. Evan (VanBrocklin) broke the freestyle record that was set 20 years ago.”

Skyline and Olympus have both built longstanding reputations as elite programs. There are many reasons that the Granite School District has so many successful swimmers.

“The Granite School District is one of the few districts that builds swimming pools in their high schools,” Thorum said. “Our feeder program, Olympus Aquatics, has been producing a lot of talented kids in the last five to six years. They ultimately swim for Skyline or Olympus. This sport comes down to technical skill. Kids with good technique have good results. That’s why I think the schools are doing well right now.”

Just reading about the success of these teams doesn’t do them justice. Watching them in the pool is a whole other story.

“If you have some time to kill, it’s worth watching the 5A livestream and video of the last relay,” Thorum said.

“If I sit here, I feel like I’m boasting to tell you how great this class was. This is one of the most dominant men’s teams in Utah high school history. The kids deserve the recognition. Drop in on other swim events and see it. All is made possible by the Granite School District and UHSAA. They have made sure that these events happen every year especially during COVID. Our kids still achieved unparalleled success during this time.”

Olympus High School set an unprecedented amount of state records. Evan VanBrocklin set three individual records (200 yard individual medley, 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly). His 50 yard freestyle time of 20.53 seconds is a state record among all classifications. His 45.13 second time in the 100 yard freestyle last season is also a state record among all classifications.

VanBrocklin also was a member of two relay teams that set state records among all classifications (200 yard freestyle relay, 400 yard freestyle relay). He finished as the swimmer of the year in 5A. He will be swimming at

the University of Utah in college. There will be plenty of talent that Olympus will need to replace next year as many of their top swimmers are graduating. Jack Saber, Alexander Turney, Bridger Sink and Ethan Astle are just a few of the many key contributors on the team this year.

Lukas Keele was one of the key contributors on the Skyline boys team. He and teammate Nikolas Skamnes finished in the top 10 rankings in the 200 individual medley for 5A. Jade Garstang of Skyline was the female swimmer of the year in 5A. Deni Cullom is the first-year head coach for Skyline Eagles. Finishing as the runner-ups in both the boys and girls 5A championships shouldn’t be taken lightly. They will be contenders for years to come.

According to a press release from Skyline High School, “Deni was the 2010 Open Water National Champion and a three-time 18 & Under Open Water National Champion. He earned a Bronze Medal at Lac San Jean Open Water World Cup and was on the USA National Team 2008-10. He also holds multiple local pool and open water records.”

Cullom worked as an assistant swim coach at Mission Viejo Nadadores in Southern California. Most recently, he was an assistant coach at Olympus High School and an age group coach at Olympus Aquatics coaching all ages from 7-18 years old. He developed season, weekly, and daily plans and supervised USA Swimming coaches, recreational coaches and all 14 and under age groups within the team.”

The Olympus girls team defeated Skyline by a final score of 287 to 218. While it was closer in the girls swimming championships, the Olympus boys team doubled the score of every team not named Skyline. The Titans defeated the Eagles by a final score of 427.5 to 301. The next closest school was Brighton with 180 points.

Since swimming is a year-round sport, there are several more events going on that require more persistence from the athletes even after the high school season is done.

“The Olympus Aquatics team had a state championship the following weekend,” Thorum said. “There are schools all over the valley that have kids who swim for our team. At the USA Swimming championship, kids got to swim on the same team. We made one big super team.

They take a few weeks off between seasons, but they swim year round. Next, they are going to Texas for the sectionals meet.” l

100-year plan envisions greenway networks throughout valley

tand in an empty parking lot in Murray, just west of 900 East and north of Van Winkle Expressway. What sounds can you hear? Like many places in the valley, there’s the sound of cars roaring past and the persistent beeping of construction vehicles. But at this particular spot, you can also hear the waters of Big Cottonwood Creek rushing past.

Perhaps one day you’ll also be able to hear children playing, native birds chirping and shouts of laughter as kayakers glide past.

This dream comes from the Seven Greenways Vision Plan, a community-supported, long-range plan that reimagines the seven creeks that flow from the Wasatch Mountains to the Jordan River and eventually to the Great Salt Lake.

Once upon a time, the seven creeks meandered and occasionally flooded their banks, enriching the surrounding soil. The waterways formed corridors for plants and wildlife through the dry valley.

Then the first white settlers arrived and immediately begin diverting the water into canals to water crops. Over the next 175 years, the valley became more and more urbanized. The streams are now mostly straightened, stripped of vegetation, lined with concrete or completely buried underground.

The Seven Canyons Trust hopes to reverse this damage—one foot at a time—by working with public and private landowners to develop greenways.

A greenway is a linear corridor that includes a waterway and adjacent land. Greenways can improve non-motorized transportation, generate economic activity, reduce impacts of flooding, improve water quality

and provide habitat for wildlife.

Greenways can also be created when water is “daylighted,” meaning underground pipes are removed. This process helps purify the water, improves conditions for fish and birds, and lets people see the water that sustains life in the valley.

Hundred-year plan In 2019, Seven Canyons Trust set out to create a 100-year greenways vision for the Salt Lake Valley. They partnered with Salt Lake County, the Wasatch Front Regional Council, Design Workshop, an urban design firm, and representatives from the eight stream-side municipalities.

“We asked those cities to provide a letter of support and financially support the plan,” said Brian Tonetti, executive director of the Trust. “That was really exciting to us, having each of the cities buying into this plan.”

“The project started with taking general plans—many city’s plans mentioned creeks—and basically compiling all that into a countywide vision,” Tonetti said. “A lot of the groundwork was laid out by the cities.”

The resulting Existing Conditions Report is rich with data that supports the creation of greenways. The information is examined through five lenses: water, nature, community, recreation and urban areas.

The next step was to learn what the public thinks. Rather than postponing the community engagement phase in 2020, the Trust pivoted.

“The pandemic itself made us realize that we do need spaces and we need spaces close to home,” Tonetti said. “It also made engagement very hard.”

through the Trust’s website and during 15 pop-up workshops that took place in outdoor, public spaces. University students also conducted surveys to capture opinions of people less likely to have internet access.

The Seven Greenways Vision Plan describes the 20 highest-ranking opportunity areas and provides tools to implement them, including design concepts, policies and management best practices.

The 20 opportunity areas and how they rank Four creeks (City, Red Butte, Emigration and Parleys) flow through Utah’s capi-

tal city. Of the nearly 36 miles of water, just over 14 are currently buried. The nine highest ranking areas are in Salt Lake City, with daylighting City Creek along North Temple and the Fulsom Corridor at the top.

Sugar House Daylighting Parleys Creek in this dense neighborhood wouldn’t be easy. But efforts are already underway to “culturally daylight” the waterway through signage and art (No. 7).

tonwood Creek flow through this city. Nearly a mile of the water is buried. The only suburban project to make it into the top 10 ideas is a plan to develop a trail connecting the neighborhoods along Mill Creek near Scott Avenue Park (No. 10).

Murray Both Big Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood Creeks flow through Murray. Of the seven total miles of waterway, less than half a mile is buried.

A trail from State Street to the Jordan River Trail along Big Cottonwood Creek would give more people access to nature in the heart of Murray (No. 18).

The underutilized parking lot south of Ivy Place Shopping Village could be transformed into green space, restoring habitat and creating a floodplain as well as constructing a seasonal boat ramp (No. 17).

Cottonwood Heights Cottonwood Heights has stretches of both Big and Little Cottonwood Creeks within its boundaries. Of the 6.1 total miles, 0.2 are buried.

One opportunity area proposes a trail connection from Wasatch Boulevard to Crestwood Park along Little Cottonwood Creek (No. 19). This project also crosses into Sandy.

Holladay Holladay is home to four miles of Big Cottonwood Creek. Just 1/10th of a mile is buried.

One potential project proposes a trail from Holladay Hills to Creekside Park (No. 16). The project would improve pedestrian access, restore the habitat and create opportunities for fishing.

South Salt Lake Less than half a mile of the more than 3 miles of Mill Creek flowing through South Salt Lake is buried. But much of the open water is channelized through a straightened, concrete canal. An exception to this is Fitts Park and the Mill Creek Trail, which connects the park to the Jordan River Trail.

While the park is a great amenity, Seven Canyons Trust believes it can be improved by restoring habitats and enhancing recreation along the creek (No. 12).

The greenways plan also proposes day-

lighting Mill Creek near 3300 South and 700 East during the redevelopment of the nearby shopping center (No. 11), restoring habitat along Mill Creek from 200 East to 200 West (No. 13), and restoring wetlands where Mill Creek flows into the Jordan River to improve water quality (No. 15).

Looking further ahead, a 100-year vision proposes a pedestrian crossing over I-15 to improve recreational access for surrounding communities (No. 14).

Sandy Just under 2 miles of Little Cottonwood Creek flows through Sandy.

Midvale Midvale’s boundaries contain 0.3 miles of Little Cottonwood Creek. This small stretch flows above ground at the eastern edge of the Shops at Fort Union.

One idea envisions daylighting Little Cottonwood Creek between Fort Union in Midvale and Wheeler Farm in Murray (No. 20). This would require a trail over I-215, with the goal to improve water quality and connect the two communities.

What happens next?

Though the community visioning phase is over, individuals can still review and comment on the planning document, which can be found at sevengreenwaysvisionplan.org.

For Tonetti, the work is just beginning.

Next, he’ll begin meeting with planners and officials from each of the municipalities to discuss next steps toward implementation.

“The cities will let us know which areas really resonate with them and what they’re really excited about,” Tonetti said.

One way to imagine how the opportunity areas could look is to visit the Three Creeks Confluence Park near 1300 South and 900 West in Salt Lake City. Completed in 2020, the Trusts’s first project daylighted 200 feet of waterway where Red Butte, Emigration and Parleys Creeks meet the Jordan River.

“All of the opportunity areas are relatively low-hanging fruit, as long as we have the support for them,” Tonetti said. “There will be tons of opportunities to get engaged, so be on the lookout and be in touch with elected officials about your support.” l

Olympus boys soccer kicks off region play, looking to contend again

T

he last two seasons have not gone as planned for the Olympus boys soccer team. But hopes are high this year.

Last season, the Titans tied for fifth in Region 6 with a 7-7 record. The Titans were 7-9 overall and lost in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament. The year before, Olympus’ (and everyone else’s) season was cut considerably short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Titans are looking to return to their form from three years ago.

In 2018-19, Olympus went 8-1-1 in Region 6, taking first place. At press time, the Titans were 15-3-2 overall and lost in the 5A state title game. This season, Olympus has started off with a 3-2 overall mark and 1-1 in league play. The Titans are accustomed to playing in close games, as four of their first five games were decided by a single goal. The only game that had a wider score differential was March 22 when Olympus lost to Murray 3-1 at home.

So far, balanced scoring has been one of the team’s strengths. Through March 23, six players had scored goals, with five

players registering assists. Max Foulger was leading the way with two goals. Both of his goals came March 18 when the Titans defeated Park City 2-1. Clayton Numbers paces the team with a pair of assists, with one coming in the win over Park City.

Olympus posted one shutout in its first five games. That came March 15 when it defeated Wasatch 1-0.

Olympus has a senior-laden team with plenty of experience. Nine seniors dot the roster, with eight juniors joining them.

The Titans face each Region 6 opponent twice, ending with a May 10 home game with East. Every team will qualify for the postseason, with higher-seeded teams playing home games until the semifinals. l

Supporting Small Businesses is Good for the Economy

I

recently visited Weller Book Works in Salt Lake City.

The 93-year-old independent bookstore is among the treasured small businesses in Utah that give our neighborhoods their distinctive flavor and create a feeling of community.

Small businesses like Weller Book Works not only have an important place in our hearts, but they also play a vital role in our economy. In Utah, 99% of companies are considered small businesses and they employ 45% of state’s workforce.

Nationally, small businesses have accounted for two-thirds of net new job creation since 2000, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. They also keep money close to home. If you spend $100 at a local small business, roughly $67 stays in your community.

Small businesses have been a key driver of Utah’s economic rebound from the pandemic, though they still face enormous challenges. With inflation now at a 40-year high, one in four small business owners report that inflation is their biggest concern, according

to the March NFIB Small Business Optimism Index. Much of this inflation is caused by struggles in the supply chain, and 92% of small businesses say they have been impacted by supply chain disruptions. Small businesses also continue to grapple with labor shortages.

Almost half of business owners could not fill job openings, the NFIB survey found.

Given these pressures, it’s not surprising that 63% of Utahns have an unfavorable outlook on business conditions nationally over the next 12 months, as measured by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute’s Utah Consumer Sentiment Survey. The survey found less pessimism toward business conditions in the Beehive State, where only 36% of Utahns have an unfavorable outlook.

There may be some relief ahead for small businesses. The Federal Reserve is taking aggressive action to control price increases. The Fed hiked the key short-term interest by a quarter point in March, marking its first rate increase in more than three years. Up to six additional rate hikes are expected this year, which could cause interest rates to increase by as much as two percent. Their hope is to deflate some of the bubbles that have formed because the overheating economy.

Another positive sign for small businesses is Utah’s strong job market. All of Utah’s

10 major private-sector industry groups posted year-over-year job gains, according to Utah’s Department of Workforce Services.

Utah’s annual total employment has increased by 4.2 %, adding 66,000 jobs over the past year.

However, the Russian war with Ukraine is adding more uncertainty to the economy, just as it is turning the corner on the COVID pandemic. The war has pushed already high oil prices to new multi-year highs. The war is also disrupting the supply of wheat, which

will pressure food prices, and nickel, which is an essential ingredient in stainless steel and a component in lithium-iron batteries. This will add yet another element of uncertainty to the small business recovery.

In the meantime, the best way to help ensure the survival of our favorite neighborhood small businesses is to support them as much as possible.

Female golfers will mix business and fun at the Copper Rock Championships in April

F

ormer Utah Senator Pat Jones understands not all business discussions happen in the office. Often, valuable deals are made on a golf course. When she realized many women aren’t usually involved in golf tournaments, she understood how often they are left out of important business decisions.

As the CEO of the Women’s Leadership Insititute, Jones organized a women’s golf clinic and tournament where they could build relationships, learn the basics of game and golf etiquette, participate in a scramble, and put themselves in a better position for inclusion.

“What I’ve learned, and I knew it intuitively, is that golf is the language of business,” Jones said. “That’s just how business has worked for so many years. It’s important for women to learn a sport that can help further their careers.”

The program was so successful that the WLI entered into an exclusive three-year charity partnership with the LPGA Epson Tour at the Copper Rock Golf Course near Hurricane, Utah.

The event is a week-long immersion for female leaders in Utah with the opportunity to play with top golfers and network with other professionals.

This year’s Copper Rock Championship event will run from April 18-23 and feature 220 pro female golfers. Last year’s event was a success, although Jones admitted she was a little intimidated playing with pro golfers. She even took a few lessons.

“I felt I had to play in the Pro-Am,” she said. “Since I was encouraging women, I felt I had to walk the talk. I can’t wait to go again this year. The pro golfers were so generous with their time and advice.”

The event starts on Monday, with the WLI Pro-Am, fol-

lowed by a Meet the Pros Night on Tuesday. Wednesday is the ElevateHER Challenge Luncheon with keynote speaker Sharlene Wells Hawkes. The luncheon will be a time to recognize companies that have accepted the ElevateHER Challenge.

Thursday through Saturday is the Copper Rock Championships where the women can cheer on their Pro-Am teammates as they vie for the title.

“ElevateHER is a corporate challenge with six actions companies can take based on best practices that will elevate women in business,” Jones said.

The program’s goal is to increase the number of women in leadership positions and the retention rate of female workers.

Companies are asked to increase the number of women who serve on community and corporate boards, establish a women’s leadership development program, close wage gaps, and encourage women to run for public office.

WLI started in 2015 to elevate female leaders in Utah.

With the WLI Career Development Series, companies can sponsor female leaders, investing in their future.

“It’s been hugely popular,” Jones said. “Companies who have accepted the challenge can send female leaders, mid to senior level. When women go back and teach their teams, it helps them be seen as the leader they are. It’s really magical.”

WLI also offers a Political Development Series that coaches women who want to run for office. The program started seven years ago and more than 300 women have completed the course. Several women currently serving as mayors in Utah went through the program.

Holladay Lions adaptive swim program gives people with disabilities chance to succeed

hays Jensen is kind of a big deal. As a competitive swimmer, he raced with the Hartvigsen School swim team at the Special Olympics, winning gold and silver medals.

The 28-year-old trains with the adaptive swim club at Holladay Lions Recreation Center, a program his aunt Nikol Jensen said changed his life.

“The whole adaptive program has been a godsend to our family,” Jensen said. “Finding any adaptive program for people over 21 is practically impossible.”

The adaptive swim club, run through Salt Lake County, is for swimmers with disabilities, ages 15 and up. The Holladay Lions program is one of the only places offering swim team experiences for older people with disabilities.

Rebecca Morley, the adaptive aquatic manager at Holladay Lions, said the swim club is a chance for swimmers with physical, visual, developmental or intellectual disabilities to find a tribe and engage in something they enjoy. The monthly swim meets provides a structure where participants can be successful.

“The program is designed for swimmers who are more competitive and enjoy competing at our meets. They’re really good swimmers,” Morley said. “They’re fabulous.

They’re so much fun. I’m passionate about teaching [swimming] skills to a population that doesn’t always get that. Salt Lake County is passionate about that, too.”

The adaptive swim program at Holladay Lions also includes swimming lessons for children ages 3-18, inclusion lessons where children with disabilities can be with their siblings or friends, and the Otters Swim Club for children and teens. Costs for lessons are as low as $10 for a four-week session.

“We try to keep costs as minimal as possible because we understand that cost can be a barrier to participating,” Morley said.

“This is an opportunity to participate with their peers, sometimes it’s their siblings and sometimes it’s kids from school. We provide additional training and information to the instructor.”

Learning life-saving water skills is valuable. Morley said it’s a main focus of the program. She wants students to feel safe in the water and know what to do in case of an emergency. Swimming lessons gives kids these skills along with the bonus of having a fun time.

When Chays came to live with Jensen five years ago, she struggled to find programs her nephew could join. Chays has taken swimming lessons since he was 2 so the

Taken to the cleaners

A

ppliances are like Christmas lights.

When one goes out, they all go out.

We’ve spent the last couple of years replacing appliances, and not easy things like toasters or the electric carving knife. We’re talking a dishwasher, a dryer, a refrigerator, and now our washing machine.

I hated to tell my husband the bad news, not because of the expense but because I had to brace myself for the laundry puns. He has loads of them. But I threw in the towel and waited for his list to unfold.

“Well, sheet,” he started. “I spilled laundry soap and now my hands are Tide. I’d better come clean ‘cause I’m in a lot of hot water. I’m all washed up. Oh, the irony!”

Once that was done, I had to decide the best way to clean our clothes until the new washer was delivered. Options were 1) go to a laundromat, 2) drive to Utah Lake where I could wash my clothes against a rock until developers make Utah Fantasy Island, or 3) say, “Alexa, do the laundry.”

The laundromat won. It’s been years since I’ve visited a laundromat. I bought a chai tea latte to sip, packed a book to read whilst waiting for clothes to dry, and a notebook to write pithy thoughts.

My first impression of the laundromat was the warmth from the dryers and the smell of fabric softener was so cozy. This will be joyous, I thought. Maybe I’ve found

my new community. Things went downhill quickly.

While inserting 19 quarters (!!) into the machine, I shoved clothes into the washer and noticed my tea had spilled all over the laundry basket. I grabbed my tea, closed the washer door, and sliced my finger open, leaving bloody fingerprints on the handle.

Trying not to think about what types of bacteria live on the handle of a laundromat washing machine, I considered leaving the blood there so the next person would wonder if a serial killer had washed his T-shirts. But I used a damp, tea-soaked towel to wipe it up and looked for a place to sit.

Making my way to a row of stiff, plastic chairs, I sat down to enjoy the lukewarm remains of my tea. I opened my book and looked around the room where people sat staring at cell phones. No one made eye contact.

I leaned toward the young man next to me. “Do you come here often?” I whispered, like a crazy lady. It sounded like a bad pickup line at a laundry-themed bar. He shifted his body away from me and continued Tik Toking. My finger dripped blood on the floor.
